Reviews (page 5 of 16)
What an opening track: the eponymous track "Black Sabbath" on the album of the same name, sets the scene perfectly, created a new musical genre, and changed music forever. It's a shame I can only give this 5 stars.
The ultimate in a debut album. Gods of heavy metal.
Raw, rough & melodic rock. Great voice of Ozzy ... a masterpiece
A brilliant and beautiful album. The beginning of so much that I love and a true example of how Black Sabbath and other early pioneers of heavy music were very much making "real music" that matched what else was coming out at the time, both in quality of the musicianship and of the songwriting. While they would continue down a path to establish their style with bigger "hits," this album feels so real and raw, as it was just coming from a very honest place as they wore their inspirations on their sleeve but did it all in their own way.
9/10
Dark heavy metal/hard rock. Man there's so much to say about this album. Black Sabbath created one of the most influential albums of all time with their first album. The roots of doom metal can be traced to this very album. I've heard this many times before but the riffs never get old. The production is just perfect, not too clean and not too messy. Bits of weird psychedlic sprinkled in here and there. It's just an incredible album. Without a doubt, timeless classic. Not even a question, of course I'll keep revisiting.
It’s amazing what this album accomplishes in a little under forty minutes.
amazing how punchy & fresh this still feels despite hearing it & infinite clones over the years perfectly themed down to the album art. lyrics are over the top spooky, sick bluesy tone, the SHREDDING! love the song length/structure as well.
Outstanding!!! Groundbreaking!!
Quite simply one of the best albums ever made. End of.
Funky heavy riffs, no better opening song for feeling of dread and doom. Enjoyed it.
5 stars. Precursor of so many metal genres. It’s a staple of how to write great riffs and of how doom metal should be made.
Gema
Tony Iommi's guitar work on this album is incredible. I like how there is some blues fused with this birth of metal. Stellar album with nice arrangements.
An absolute classic, kind of hard to listen to as an entire album in the modern world. But I played this album to death as a teenager in the 80s
Didnt know this one. Its great
Amazing!
Awesome
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is better
Great concept album
The birth of Heavy Metal and their greatest recording
Loved!!!
This is my second Black Sabbath album to review, the first being Paranoid. I thought Paranoid was fantastic (I was familiar with a few songs going into it), so I had high hopes for this album too. Thankfully, my expectations were exceeded listening to this album. I can’t imagine what it must have been like to hear this for the first time when it came out. I’d wager a guess that Black Sabbath was the leading cause of shit-fits in 1970. The first track does a fantastic job of setting the tone for the rest of the album. The mood is dark, brooding, and Ozzy’s wails and pleas for help create a really unsettling sound. The guitar work on the opening track is fantastic too, and I loved how the slow and deep tone shifted to a faster pace towards the end of the song. That might be one of the best lead-off tracks of all time. “The Wizard” was fantastic too, and I loved how it showed the shared sound of blues and early hard rock. The harmonica playing really caught me off guard, but it never felt out of place. However, my favorite song on this album was “N.I.B.” I used to hear this song on the local hard rock station back in the early aughts (rest in peace, KLOL), and I loved it so much back then. I hadn’t thought about this song in almost two decades, so I was delighted when it came up on this album. I love Ozzy’s singing on this song, especially during the chorus. He's not a great vocalist, but man, his voice is perfect on “N.I.B.” The repeating guitar riff is my favorite part of the song though, and I love how it combines with the drum as the song build towards the chorus. The guitar solo(s?) is fantastic too. The rest of the album is fantastic too, especially the guitar playing, but I’ve run out of steam gushing about the opening track and “N.I.B.” to comment much further. Overall, this is a great album from start to finish. This album is dark and brooding, but also an absolute joy to listen to. Black Sabbath knocked it out of the park with this one.
Spooky, heavy, amazing. 5 stars
dobili me na prvoj, drzali me do kraja👀
brutalno mi je ovo bilo, uopce nisam ocekivao
dost dobro
Black Sabbath is FIRE-the dark Beatles-Ozzy has a great voice-crazy you can’t really understand him today 4/5
I do love me a bit of Sabbath. These Brummie lads done good. Just the album cover alone send me into raptures. Not their best but this is the begining, it's like honey to my ears- so good it's beyond hearing, a resonance that permeates my soul. From the very first track with bell and ominous portent guitars paving the way for Ozzy's voice........
Seminal and fantastic. the tuning on the guitar to make it work. the use of the tritones to create a sense of malice in the sound. the lyrics having a darker theme. all around fantastic work that changed the world
Soo much goodness!
12/10! Excellent!
Amazing album. I want more 10/10
WTF this is just a blatant rip-off of Tenacious D's sound. Pretty sick tbh.
I would love to time travel back to 1970 and be around for this album's release. Seeing the creepy LP cover on the shelves, putting this on your turntable and hearing the birth of heavy metal. The first track on this record must have blown many minds - it's just so dark and evil for its time. This record is immensely influencial, and timeless. The songwriting and performances are incredible across the whole album.
The birth of metal itself. And what a way to introduce itself. Great opening song, and it keeps the energy up the whole way. Fucking awesome record
Oh, to be a teenager in February 1970 experiencing 05:15 on the opening track for the first time! There are some remnants of the former 'Polka Tulk Blues Band' in here, which makes this album drag a bit, now and then, and it's a debut after all, like, they have not fully arrived at what they're really doing aka inventing here, but I was stingy with my stars yesterday, so today I'll be generous and not wait for 'Paranoid' to put a Black Sabbath album into my favourites, where it belongs.
Always happy to hear some black sabbath
No notes. Fucking magnificent
Nice album.
Classic
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath I was so happy to see this as my song for the day. I just got into Sabbath over the past year. Started to pick up the vinyl when I'd see it. But didn't know more than the hits and Ozzy. One thing I like about this challenge is that I take time to look up the album and to get a bit of context of what was going on during the recording. It's the digital version of sitting on your couch with the vinyl sleeve and reading the liner notes (god I wish artist would get back to doing that). With this album I learned that this album was played live, no overdubs. And they did it in 12 hours. That's just crazy. I also learned that Tommy Iommi had to Macgyver fingertips for a couple of fingers he lost in a sheet metal factory accident out of the plastic of a dish detergent bottle and had to tune the strings down to make it easier to bend the strings. And I got to listen to this amazing album! I sometimes think about what I've missed out on by not listening to things earlier in life, but I realize that I might not have been as open minded to different genres at that stage in my life. So I've been truly enjoying this experience. Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath is a 5/5 star album.
Another winner. Im sure they were a big influence on yesterday’s artist - Iron Maiden. Sabbath was a key player on in the first British heavy metal invasion. They are icons
From the opening of the first song, I lamented that the album (version that I found) was only 5 songs. But they made up for it by being long. I found this album incredibly enjoyable, although I didn't love the lead vocals. It felt cutting edge. What can I say?? It rocks!
Oho. Warning ab 6:40 min WIE GUET BITTE?! tingles my brain. De Ahfang vo N.I.B au suuuuper lääss! Macht eif spass zum lose. Finds funny hend sies am friitig em 13. veröffentlicht. Ich muss sege d düstere gitarreriffs allgemein im ganze album findi cool, chunnt au 50 jahr spöter iwiie guet ah (de fakt dass de typ 2 Fingerspitze ned gha hett? Insane) hey allgemein machts mega spass das album z lose
ja also was sölli sege
Easy 5. Birth of metal. Iommi is a riff master.
I fully intended to go into this review saying ‘I was intending to give it a four because it’s not quite as good as later albums.’ While I do think that it’s a valid criticism, it isn’t as good as Paranoid, it’s also a pointless comparison. So what if it isn’t as good as Paranoid, it is still a fantastic album full to the brim of riffs, twisted and knotty as the roots of ancient trees. It is a masterclass in guitar drums and bass, to the extent that I cannot decide who performs best. And this isn’t to downplay Ozzy’s contribution. I love Ozzy’s voice, but it’s not the most important thing he brought to the band. That was his fantastic harmonica playing of course. Oh, and the fact that he’s one of the most charismatic performers to have ever existed. Outside of the influence context, I think that this is just a damn good Hard Rock album, of the sort that Britain did so well in the 60’s and 70’s. And because of it’s influence in birthing a whole new genre of music, this album deserves all the praise it gets
In the late 90s I borrowed an all black, ominous looking CD from a friend who told me I had to hear this. The first song left me speechless and somewhere between scared and excited. That was my introduction to metal music, for better or worse, with Slipknot. I imagine that same feeling for the kids in 1970 who put this record on and heard something they hadn’t heard before, it was taboo and forbidden but oh so cool. Legends for a reason, still a solid album today. 5/5 devil horns.
The Wizard... more harmonica than I was expecting. Tremendous album! Listened twice! 5/5
this album is simply perfection
The opening track still got me shitting
Good
The album that influenced 50+ years of metal
They really came out of the chute firing
This is heavier than I realized. Like, the sound feels weighty, and everything contributes to that broader mood of despair. I like it, but damn, is it surprising. Honestly, I haven't heard of this album in full and it surprises me how cohesive but varied it is. Like, it's very blues and very rock and very jazzy and there's a synthesis to all of these discordant sounds that does actually show how rock music was going to evolve in the future. Also, everything is so distinctive, it's so weird how in sync the sound is while each of the instruments are so *distinct*. Terrific stuff.
Wow, I can't believe this came out in 1970. I wonder what it was like hearing it then. I'm definitely not a metal fan but I can appreciate this. I even kinda liked it.
Solid hits although the album wasn’t on Spotify in full. Mandatory vinyl to own.
yes
Cover to cover bangers NIB is a classic Black Sabbath is so heavy
The birth of heavy metal as we know it.
Interesting, can hear the blues influence
Cool
The World wasn’t prepared for this album, I can imagine parents in the 70s being scared of Black Sabbath because it was so different compared to other music genres as it was the first Heavy Metal Album. And That’s why I love it.
Masterpiece of an album. It’s dark. It’s rough. It’s sludgy. It’s suffocating. I feel like I’m trapped and cannot escape. The music equivalent of Saw 1. This album is glorious.
Stone cold classic and my first straight up 5 star.
5*
An interesting debut. A lot more indulgent but not in a bad way. 5 longer style tracks that cover adjectives like droney, doomy and jammy. It's weird to me as this feels like something they would've done after their bigger hits like paranoid, iron man, sweet leaf and the like. It feels like a better album experience to me for some reason than paranoid which was always my go to.
BADASS guitar & drums, some of the best heavy metal riffs of all time. Love the structure/format of combining multiple songs on tracks 3 & 5.
Monster album. One of my all-time favorites
5/5
More pentatonic riffs than you could shake a stick at
A few years ago this album got me into Heavy Metal and Black Sabbath. I love this album!
First time listening to Black Sabbath and loved it! Really enjoyed it and I can hear a number of newer bands that I like who were clearly influenced by their sound.
Come on its great
Pretty great album. A couple songs not on Spotify?
Big fan of this one. Very good album.
YEEAAHHHH, ESTO ES MÚSICA
It’s the invention of heavy metal. Forget anyone who tells you it’s just a hard blues record. When you take the cover, the lyrics, the title track and the wailing banshee that would never again be called John… you have the invention of heavy metal.
Never would’ve expected to like this, but this album is incredible.
Some strong Led Zeppelin vibes. Would come back to it and listen again. Was a pretty quick 40 minutes.
The basslines in this album are straight up addicting. Everything about this album is heavy, all the way through to the blues riffs to close the album. This album becomes even more special when you realize that the influences that came before it are...pretty much nothing at all. Favorite track: Bit of Finger/Sleeping Village/Warning
The first heavy metal album, and still the best.
Album 240 of 1001 Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath Rating : 5 / 5 (Rounded Up) Giving it an extra little nudge in the rating due to its historical significance in being known as the 1st heavy metal album. Never was my go to genre, but I can appreciate it the influence it had on others. Could have sworn I heard a little Led Zeppelin in there. Starts and finishes strong.
First album for me is this album. Yeay!
although this album is short, every song is so good. NIB is definitely my favorite on this album
Partly heard before Saved 4/5 Top track: N.I.B.
Crazy how the first metal album is also one of the best metal albums
89/100 Based on this scale: 1 star - 0 to 19 2 stars - 20 to 39 3 stars - 40 to 59 4 stars - 60 to 79 5 stars - 80 to 100 While the first band to have been described as heavy metal by a journalist and while their song "Communication Breakdown" is arguably the first heavy metal song, I think most people can agree that Black Sabbath's debut was the very first heavy metal ALBUM ever. While Led Zeppelin were largely a heavy blues band, Sabbath's influence is far more obvious in most of today's metal. What a beginning it was. Iommi's iconic riffs, Ward's frenzied fills, Butler's unmistakable bass lines, with the eerie voice of music's most recognizable vocalist sprinkled on top, to create a proto-doom-metal experience that was just too much for people to handle in 1970. Absolutely brilliant.
If only a word could describe this whole album it would be: Dark. Sinister, dismal, loud, heavy and fancifull are very accurate to this album too. This album is often (and they are right) consider the first ever Heavy metal album, i mean how could you disagree with that after listenign to it. The first song that gave the band its name is the best exemple of that, a sinister, dark and heavy song. The album is also in the same batch as Led Zep and Deep purlple with some (always very heavy) blues inspired song like the Wizzard and the covers warning and evil woman. I think by far the best song is The Wizzard, an harmonia based riff, with lyrics that were inspired by gendalf and represent the black magic aura around the band that would always follow them through out their carrer. The song are very long in the album nearly 40 minutes with only 7 songs is another classic of that time. Not the mention the scary album cover with the spetralesque woman in a picuresque but still very dark ambiance. Anyway this album was so heaed of its time, him with the follow up album Paranoid would establish Black Sabbath as one of the most influencial and important band of all times, would create a legend with Ozzy Ousbourne and a whole new music style: Heavy Metal
Classic. Invented a new genre, which they later perfected. The very definition of a five star record and something that everyone should hear before they die.
I really enjoyed it. The first track is one of the best openers ever. The album is varied and enjoyable
This is awesome!! I feel like my reviews are turning into confessions, but I have to admit that I’ve never listened to a Black Sabbath record and not even a single song by choice. I always though Ozzy was playing a character and that people who claimed to like Black Sabbath were just in it for the fuck you value of the stance, but the first song was enough to convince me I’m an idiot. The first time I listened to doom metal was after I read a Henry Rollins review of an Om show or record that he said was only for people who were willing to ride the big waves of sonic destruction. I was willing and am glad I did, and now even more glad to have listened to the guys who got those waves rolling in the first place.
IMHO one of the greatest albums of all time. 6/5
Oh yeah!
First impressions: I bet this blew people's minds when it first came out. Long, slow opening builds the tension with the insistent bassline under these lonely guitar notes and vocals. Oh snap, tempo change. I like how hard the kick drum and the distorted guitar come in. Yeah, okay, this is pretty cool. Next song comes in with a harmonica and that's just rad. These songs are starting to remind me a lot of Coheed&Cambria with the super dramatic musical storytelling. I asked P and he says probably. That Black Sabbath pretty much invented this kind of sound/style. Cool!
A definite masterpiece
Sweet
Hahaha great start! I love this album. Damnnn it's so good you know they recorded it in like 3 hours?
Monumental
Ozzy ozzy ozzy
One of the best albums.
This is a great debut album from Sabbath. I won't pretend to be an aficionado but I have always really liked Black Sabbath's early albums. This is such a strong start, it's funny to read the initial criticism of this album and find out that it was kind of panned. In retrospect it feels so new and unique but that's probably because it stood out and has lasted the test of time better than some of the other bands that it was being compared to. Standout Tracks: Black Sabbath, The Wizard, Wasp / Behind the Wall of Sleep / Bassically / N.I.B., Wicked World, A Bit of Finger / Sleeping Village / Warning
dude....no words...SABATH!!!!!
Von vorne bis hinten geil.
This is my first time listening to Black Sabbath and I was surprised that this is Ozzy Osbourne's band. I like the album, very on brand for 1970s music. The vocals and instrumentals are experimental, in a way that I know it's from the 70s. I actually thought that Black Sabbath was the screamo kind but I'm pleasantly surprised!
Such a iconic album from black Sabbath. So cool riffs
bro. come on. the OG. fucking love this album. one of the GREATEST of all fucking time. fuck you if you rate less than five actually fucking kill yourself you self absorbed fucking christian ass pussy ass little bitch mother FUCKER fucking DIE i mean KILL YOUR god fearing boot licking self. so good.
So heavy and bluesy and dark. Also so much space in the mix. I love Sabbath.
This is far from Sabbath's best work, but there's a lot to enjoy here. Track's like The Wizard and N.I.B. helped shape an entire landscape of new music for decades. If it's not obvious, I'm a big fan of heavier music and in particular Doom. This album was a blast to revisit. Since it's clear the folks that put together this list have a frustrating affinity for late 60's / early 70's noodling, this was such a breath of fresh air for music of that era. Favorite tracks: The Wizard, N.I.B., Warning
Not as polished as some releases that would follow but that only adds to the charm of the debut release. They hammered this out in studio playing live as a group in a 12 hour session and the energy on it is palpable. Though it’s seen as metals first release, there’s some bluesy undertones to it, The Wizard has some epic haunting harmonica on it, this track is the standout of the 5. Sabbath simply works so well together, there’s a looseness to their debut as they comfortably maneuver their way thru these lengthy songs. I fucking love this. 5 stars
Magnificent.
Errug vet, intro nummer en warning
Fantastiskt album.
Isäni on kuunnellut Black Sabbathia 70-luvulta lähtien, joten syntyessäni minulle ei annettu paljoa valinnan varaa. Ensimmäisen Ozzy-paitani muistaakseni sain jo kaksivuotiaana eli isäni vain kylmäverisesti päätti, että sinä kuuntelet Sabbathia. En edes uskalla ajatella mitä olisi käynyt, jos olisin murrosiässä alkanut glooryhuntata esimerkiksi Deep Purplea. Todellinen fanius alkoi minulla viisi kuusi vuotta sitten.
The OG metal album. Even the cover was way creepier than other stuff at the time; it just conveys some kind of menace to me. The title track just portrays fear so aggressively, almost. It seems almost like a larger-than life fear, like something horrible, scarier than you can imagine. The instrumental gives us only a taste of this. The other songs are good, too; ‘N.I.B’ sounds like something off the next album, Paranoid, without having the disadvantage of every song next to it being in the same key. (Why did they do that? We’ll get to that album when we get to it, I guess.) Anyway, uhhhhhhhh the end I guess (I just said I guess twice in quick succession).
Very Very good album Best drum tracks in classic rock.
The beginning of a whole genre in an album, an absolute banger! Although I own other Black Sabbath records, this one is definitely missing and going on the list.
10/10 Heavy Metal 101
A classic, kickstarting a whole genre/movement. 5 out of 5
Undisputed milestone
Something tells me these guys will be around a while...
Excellent first groundbreaking album. One of the best beginnings to an album I know. And Ossie’s voice is great for someone of such tender years.
Absolutely haunting. As the album progresses it gets more manic and crazed, and seems desperate for the listener to be uncomfortable, Ozzy's vocals with the riffs and drum kicks in the back culminate a start to a remarkable career, and a new type of Metal. 11/10
Awesome
Grote klasse
Amazing! Never listened before and was pleasantly surprised
A landmark album. I mean how many albums can be directly pointed to as the point of a major genre?
What a haunting, heavy, and masterful debut. I love this album so much and I don't think I'll ever tire of it even as I've heard so many various metal bands cover assorted songs from this album over the years. Something that gets lost at times for people when thinking about Sabbath is that they really respect the groove and do everything they can to make the groove stand out. "N.I.B." is such a hidden gem of a song- the bass intro is one of the best grooves ever in a metal song and the part where Ozzy sings "your love for me has got to be real" is immediately so beautiful as a counterpoint to the bass underneath it. "Evil Woman" again comes in with a wonderful groovin riff. It's not a huge song of theirs but it is another reminder that they don't ever have any weak songs. "Wicked World" might be my favorite on the album and one of my favorite Sabbath songs. (I love the cover of this song by a band called "Skinless". It's unrelenting and brutal and yet still funky and jazzy). 5/5.
I love Black Sabbath, it's rare that I listen to whole albums by them now, but this was excellent
"Pure scrumtrulessence."
Imagine being a 15 year old kid in 1970. You've just come back from the record shop with this dark, ominous looking record, and you have no idea what a Black Sabbath is. You get home, pop it on the player, make sure to plug in your headphones because if mom and dad catch you with this, you're going to catholic school, and hear the first track...but there's no music...just a soft thunderstorm and bells ringing. What could this be? What's happening? Then suddenly, the devil's tritone kicks in. Tony and co greet you with the DARKEST riff you've ever heard. Ozzy comes in whaling about meeting Satan in his dreams, pleading for help. FUCK MAN This was the very first album I ever fell in love with. As a church kid, this broke me. I was conflicted for loving it so much. I truly believed I bought a one-way ticket to hell just for being into this. Of course, 32 year old me laughs, and obviously there are thousands of more "evil" or "intense" albums out there. But the most intense band I was allowed to listen to then was Switchfoot...so it was real for me back then. But DOES this album hold up almost 20 years after I first fell in love with it? To be honest, yeah it really fucking does. It rips from start to finish. N.I.B. remains one of the greatest bass lines of all time. Ozzy's vocals are on point. Drums are wild yet tight. The jazz rhythms on Wicked World. Mmmmmm good. My name is Lucifer, please take my hand!
The sound of Black Sabbath opening Black Sabbath with the titular Black Sabbath is one of unholy creation—of a paradigm shifting as the flames of hell lick the anvil forging what we now hail as HEAVY METAL.
A remarkable record, their next is even better.
One of the most influential albums of all time for a reason. It’s kind of wild to hear a genre get created so abruptly. It would only take another 7 months for them to perfect the sound on Paranoid, but this album was the guidebook and it came out fully realized. The performances are amazing, the experimentation is exciting, and the wizard is an instant classic
Where it all started. Imperious album. Still vibrant. Love it
The immature absurdity of Ozzy's lyrics combines with bang-on arrangements and the faintest whiff of stoner rock. Rare to find such a perfectly formed debut album.
4/5
classic
If anything, the album deserves its praise for influencing every single metal band. The Self-Titled debut is an amazing showcase of skill and balance. Every track was on point, but songs like N.I.B and Evil Woman really show the skill level of the bassist Geezer Butler, while songs like the Title track and Warning are showcases of the guitarist Toni Iommi’s excellent riff-writing abilities. Ozzy is also on point on every track on the album. There isn’t a single point in the album where the pacing is disturbed, but songs like Behind the Wall of Sleep and evil woman are more on the upbeat side. This album truly showcases the skill of the godfathers of metal. Fav tracks: Title track, The Wizard, Behind the Wall of Sleep, N.I.B, Evil Woman, Warning, Wicked world Least fave: Sleeping village (still amazing) 5/5
El nacimiento de todo.
Can I give this more than five stars? Please? A piece that played a pivotal part in the development of Hard Rock/Metal as genres, and goes as hard today as it did 53 years ago. Essential listening.
Tense, dark and menacing, slow burning start with a powerful payoff. This is an amazing first album by Black Sabbath without a bad song to be found. This album probably launched a hundred bands, as well as a few concerned parents' groups. I remember Ozzy saying in an interview that they hated the hippies and they just wanted to scare everyone. I think the band accomplishes that on levels, not just from the occult stuff, but how terrifying and apocalyptic this must have sounded against the post-Woodstock rock music landscape in 1970. It really changed the way music sounded. Masters all of them, and none over the age of 22 - Scorching riffs from Tony Iommi... bass lines straight out hell from Geezer Butler... propulsive, nuanced drumming from Bill Ward. And then there's Ozzy, one of the most compelling/ unnerving front men to ever pick up a mike. The lyrics are sometimes surprisingly eloquent, other times straight up scary. Really splendid, all the way. A little more noodling than I typically like to hear, but this is still a solid 5. Fave Songs: The Wizard, N.I.B., Black Sabbath
Heavy man! Great album. And amazing for their 1st
'Black Sabbath' & 'The Wizard' are epic tracks, solid album
Yeahhh!!! A million out of ten! This album holds such a special place in my heart <3 Early Black Sabbath inventing a new genre just like that. Hearing "Black sabbath" (the song) for the first time changed me forever. Such a raw and authentic feeling of doom, dread, horror. And that witch!!! That's what I call an iconic cover!
suena que mete mieu
I was captivated by this album from the first minute. Completely sold. It is literally the birth of a genre, but that beginning… absolutely sounds timeless, and there is nothing like it! It still sounds so out there and not generic to me, one of a kind! I love this kind of stuff. It still sounds progressive, perhaps from another planet. The bluesy stuff toward the middle was also interesting to hear, how that develops out. It’s also so well-recorded for supposedly being a live album, essentially. 5/5 will absolutely get on vinyl.
Love this album
I think I like Paranoid better, but man, there's really nothing bad about this album. It's a heavy, groovy time from beginning to end.
really enjoyed this
DOOOOMMMM!!! What a dark, gritty, cataclysmic album. Every track make you want to grow your hair out, bang your head, and yell at the world. So much dark energy. Fantastic
It's a really great thing when the first album of a particular genre still sounds absolutely amazing over 50 years later. This album absolutely rocks, and it must have been mental to hear this way back in 1970. Favourite: The Wizard
Incredibly ahead of its time and groundbreaking for the metal genre. Never overstays its dark, dark welcome. The Black Sabbath legend begins.
Pretty awesome debut album and one that I could not imagine hearing in 1970 when there was the term heavy metal did not exist yet. The guitar on "Warning" is fantastic and the whole album sounds like Led Zeppelin's evil half-twin ("The Wizard" in particular). It’s bluesy, mighty, and powerful rock and roll. It also contains the rare instance of a song name also being the name of the album AND the band. Would do a 4.5 if possible.
Fucking epic. Of 190 albums presented to me from this list so far, Black Sabbath is the third best imo. The top two so far are Dylan's Blood on the Tracks and Sabbath's Paranoid. They had their shit figured out right out the gate, did not give a fuck, just did their thing. Brilliant... taking the Devil's blues to the next level.
INCREDIBLE
It's hard to argue for another album that served as the seed that heavy metal was born form. Sure some heavy stuff was release before this but nothing wrapped up quite like this. I've listen to the for over 40 years and it never get's old.
Not sure which I prefer between this and Paranoid, but this kicked off the heavy. For me a four, but extra point for changing the course of heavy rock.
I think the first 4 songs are pretty much perfect, they sound like what I think of when I think Heavy Metal. Depending on version (I listened to the Uk version with the 10 min cover of Warning) the second half I think shows some cracks in the “perfectness”. It gets a little too bluesy (and I like blues) but Sabbath isn’t the best at that sound. This is a 4.5 album but I’ll bump it to 5 because of the significance of the start of a sound.
Fantastic
This is so good? I can hear it today.
First Metal Album of all time. What I think doesn't matter. 5
I would give this 5 stars just for The Wizard.
Raw metal goodness. Every component sounds just like it should. Not too many notes, fantastic riffs, good little solos throughout, harmonica fits in nicely, Ozzy vocals are perfect.
Impressive considering it was a new sound then. All the songs slap big.
A classic important album, although you can argue that by todays stanards its more a heavy rock album than a metal or even doom metal album.
The album that started all… Eerie, sharp, and macabre. Do we need to add more?
Own on Vinyl
One of the most important rock albums ever made. Heavy, dark, nihilistic, irresistible.
Awesome! 'The Wizard' is my favourite track from the album. Also liked 'N.I.B.', 'Evil Woman' and 'Warning'. 5/5
Starting with the wonderfully creepy cover, then getting to the rain, thunder, and clanging chimes of doom, I was very excited about this one. Then you get to the scary guitar, looming bass, and ominous drums of a real nightmare band before growly Ozzy comes in with sinister lyrics about a figure in black. What a debut! This is quite perfect as an album with its structure of suites and consistent, perfect mood all the way through. Who knew I'd love early Black Sabbath so much?
This is good! I mean WAY good!! I guess I love young Black Sabbath
Elvis never meant shit to me.
Just over 20 albums in and this is easily the best one I've had so far. Incredible album top to bottom. Feel people dont realise how good a musician Ozzy was considering he might be more known for reality tv now. But hes excellent here. Ended up spending my entire day listening to Black Sabbaths entire discography and it was great
10. First heavy metal album opens with the first doom metal song. The Wizard feels like everything everyone who hated Bob Dylan for going electric was afraid of first of two multiparty tracks breezes by even if the second track that closes the record slightly drags in the middle movement.
"Paranoid" was the first album we got when we started this, and I gave it a 5. I see no reason to give this album a lesser score. Metal doesn't get much better than this.
Such a bad ass metal album. The arrangements & Ozzy's voice just make this a spectacular listen. Long live Sabbath!
I mean, it's Black Sabbath. Not much more to say. Masters of the genre.
Puro pinche Satan
Pretty amazing that I’ve never listened to this album before, and only heard one or two of its tracks. Almost country at one point (yes, I know I’m likely to get murdered in my sleep now). The drums. So simple. So clear. So nice. N.I.B. And Warning are such classic metal tracks 🤘
Really looking forward to this! On last.fm Sabbath are #609 in my all time artists but really should be higher Thoroughly enjoyed!
53 years later and this classic still holds up. Who would have imagined that one of the best things to happen to rock music, and created an entire genre, all came about because the Tony Iommi lost the tips of two of his fingers. He down-tuned to allow him to play the guitar. And the rest is history.
It's Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath. Possibly the greatest album opener of all time. Also has NIB. Also way more jazzy than you'd expect. Classic.
Classic
The birth of metal and an amazing album.
Wizard
Yeah this is a fucking banger. You try singlehandedly creating an entire genre of rock
Through cultural osmosis I had an opinion about Black Sabbath well before I heard a song from them, let alone a full album. I eventually got into Sabbath through Paranoid (a route I still recommend). I can't imagine the impact of Black Sabbath when it came out in 1970, but if I have my Led Zeppelin, Cream, and Coven dates correct, it feels both revolutionary and totally expected. So I try to set aside all the baggage and just listen. Opening with church bells and rain signals that things are supposed to be ominous. Black Sabbath and The Wizard are the standout tracks for me. They're the two I'd always put on a Sabbath mix. And let's not let it pass unremarked that Black Sabbath open Black Sabbath with Black Sabbath. There is a statement there. When things settle into mostly medium-paced rock with the occasional psychedelic blues-jam vibe — de rigueur for the day — the album no longer feels special as the debut of such an influential band. But there's enough heaviness that it isn't something you'd feel a need to renounce artistically either. All in all, it starts impressively strong — making a case that this is a band to pay attention to — and but settles into heavy jam-blandness at the end. Had it finished with a metal wallop as strong as it opened, this would be a full 5-star release. But surely each of these 4 stars is drawn upside down and in a circle with wax from the candles dripping on the wooden floor of some ritual listening room...okay I get it, this album haunts me some...let's say it's 4.5 rounding up to 5.
Ja echte klassieker, lekker hoor
What is this …. The Devil’s interval …
Hell yeah
Very strong debut from Black Sabbath - a fan
He didn’t accidentally chop his fingers off. Satan took them as payment. 1 soul plus 2 fingers equals iconic heavy metal success.
classic
Fantastic. Entry level Metal but so pivotal.
Black Sabbath!!!!!!!!
Any doubts?
Needless to say it’s a classic. Deservingly so. It’s been a long time since I listened to this start to finish. Forgot how strong it is all the way through. Lyrics are corny in places, but the album is outstanding in spite of that. Heavy. Amazing riffs. Still really bluesy. Geezer always has something cool going on with the bass. Need to put this in more often.
classic HARD rock
Going into this album I had some concerns as my idea of metal was very superficial. This was my first metal album and I was surprised by the depth metal and Black Sabbath had to offer. The intro "Black Sabbath" perfectly builds up momentum and continually adds unique sounds giving the song such replayability as I hear new parts of the instrumental every time. The next song "The Wizard" has some of the best riffs I have ever heard. Plus the addition of the harmonica gives the song another dimension, it's kinda bluesy. This song is a perfect example of how diverse/multifaceted metal can be. "N.I.B" is such a well rounded song and my favourite performance from Ozzy, also the RIFFS! Ozzy's unique delivery and vocal presence throughout the album is very captivating. "Evil Woman" showcases Ozzy's storytelling skills again showing the how the wrong the mainstream idea of metal is. The final song Wicked world also shows show the range of Ozzy as he delivery is rough yet almost has a smooth blues delivery at times. ALSO the RIFFS!! My main complaint is less about the album but the Spotify recored as it splits the audio to left and right. In some cases its seamless but in other cases it feels like one side of my headphones have stopped working. Best Songs: Black Sabbath, The Wizard, N.I.B, and Evil Woman, Wicked World Worst Songs: N/A 9/10 - Certified Classic
WHAT IS THIS THAT STANDS BEFORE ME
Fuck yeah. I've always loved this album, ever since I first heard The Wizard. I know it's not their most popular album or their most consistent, but damn, they never sounded as huge, nor did they ever swing as hard as they do here. Huge props to the rhythm section. Bill Ward is criminally underrated as a drummer, but this album succeeds largely because of him. He always keeps things interesting, somehow managing to morph jazz drumming into metal. You'd be hard-pressed to find another album that's more influential than this one. Hell, the title track alone invented an entire genre of music (and even the sub-genre of doom metal, if you care enough). How many songs invented a new genre? Plus, this album is just so much damned fun, even on side two where things get a lot less focused. Highlights: the bass on Behind the Wall of Sleep, the lone cowbell hit on The Wizard, Ozzy's singing throughout, but especially on that title track where he sounds like Satan himself, and Tony "I invented 12 legendary riffs before breakfast" Iomi's guitar playing on the title track and his Flamenco-inspired bit on side two. Oh, and that album cover is one of my all-time favorites. I also love how much the critics hated these guys. Fuck the critics. I encourage everyone to watch their live 1970 show in Paris. Amazing stuff. Such fantastic energy. The band at its peak, before the drugs and alcohol did their damage. 40 minutes of perfection.
Title says a lot. Imagine hearing this drop in 1970...shocking! Riffs galore. The world wasn't ready.
metal slay
Very nice album. Great atmosphere. black Sabbath and NIB alone 5 stars
Choons
Just as classic as a 1970 Chevelle
Metal baby!
🤘🤘🤘🤘
Brilliant
Great metal album
amazing album
Of course this album is immensely impressive - not only for being the prototype heavy metal album, but also for how developed the sound and style is. Tony Iommi's riffs are legendary - as on 'The Wizard' - and his unique way of playing definitely guided the band towards a heavier sound. 52 years later and 'Black Sabbath' x3 is still one of the best doom tracks ever written. Lastly, the production throughout this really is something else, with the vocal pan on 'Behind the Wall of Sleep' being a highlight. The whole process of recording the album in one session seems to have added a unique element to the atmosphere and overall feel.
Few albums actively defined a whole genre like Black Sabbath. But even fewer albums contain songs that lunged more than one genre almost a decade out into the future; as is the case with “Black Sabbath” and “N.I.B.”. It’s unbelievable that this was recorded in just half a day from just the band playing their live set. Jesus, what I wouldn’t give to have seen an early Sabbath-show. The whole band is as good as they ever were - which is almost surreal considering this is their debut. Especially Ozzy’s vocals are mixed to perfection. The panned production on “Behind the Wall of Sleep”? Holy shit. It’s hard to fathom that this record is actually more than half a century old.
I have listened to this album many times, I think it's my 5th favorite Black Sabbath album. I love all of these tracks, but my favorites are "The Wizard" and "Wicked World."
Kick ass album, never heard doom metal before but its fun and heavy. The riffs are killer and drums pound.
Great album
Super dark. Really liked. Going to dive into the liner notes and wikipedia. Felt like something my older brother would listen to while I was listening to Poison and Def Leopard.
One of the best albums ever
So it begins
Fucking amazing. Way ahead of their time.
Still sounds spooky today, and not in a campy way. This must have shat some pants 50 years ago. I love the majority of the album… except for “Warning”. Blues wankery is not what Iommi lost his fingertips for, but thankfully they’ll drop this right after. Still deserves an A
EPIC!!!ONE OF THE BEST DEBUT ALBUMS EVER!! PIONEERS!!CANT EVEN THINK HOW BLOW PEOPLE MIND IN 1970 WHEN THEY BOUGHT THE ALBUM AND PUT THE RECORD TO PLAY FOR FIRST TIME AND SELF TITTLE SONG STARTS TO PLAY..
It's tough trying to be objective when you've owned, and loved, an album for over twenty years. I gave Black Sabbath another spin and it took me back to my teens, and reminded me of the excitement of being young and discovering music for oneself. Couple that with the fact that, despite chat about Blue Cheer, Cream and Vanilla Fudge, that I firmly believe Sabbath invent metal on this album (and have made the case elsewhere online) and I know I won't be giving this less than five stars. Still, strip away all else, and any platter containing 'The Wizard', 'Black Sabbath' (the seed of doom metal) and 'NIB' (all-time great riff-a-thon) is gonna generate heat.
Guys, I just love all of it. I don't even care if my mind wanders briefly in the back half, because it sounds so fucking good. I'm not sure there's ever been a better guitar tone. It's so much closer to what it actually sounds like when anybody plugs an electric guitar into an amp and adds distortion, and yet it also sounds so much better than what anyone can do just by doing those things. That sound is clearly in Iommi's hands and fingers (even the one that got chopped off.) It's perfect. And Ozzy on N.I.B.? I mean, come on. Legendary.
Great album!
Fucking love this one
Listened to album, painted house black and bought very expensive Librams, then found out these guys were just a bunch of nerds who were talking about Lord of the Rings and HP Lovercraft ... whoops
very cool
Not sure how Ozzy became the most famous one from the band, but the guitar is killer on this.
Apparently this was the first metal album? So cool!
Fuck, and I can't stress this enough, YES.
Great first album
The only bad thing about this album is that I waited until my mid 20s to listen to it. This isn't music, this is a force of nature
The beginning of greatness from the Prince of Darkness. Who knew only a short time later he'd be biting the head off a bat in my home state? Absolute legend of ROCK!
It is everything, isn't it?
I always wonder in which moment an artist realizes that have created something great. In which moment did Ozzi and Tommy realize they created a new artistic movement within the rock? This album is the definion of something new. Sounds, rithms, ways of singing and playing guitar that we then listened in many other bands. This is truly an album that worth to listen. I liked it.
LP
This is one of my favorite albums since I understand my kind of music. Impossible to dislike it.
Genius.
I've never really listened to Black Sabbath before and this was a great introduction to the band. I just love that late 60s early 70s blues rock sound. The guitar tones just tickle me in the right way. Yeah it's a lot of extended solos and guitar noodling, but I enjoy it. Gonna be putting this into the rotation for sure.
What a terrific album. It's so important to metal as a genre and it's great to listen to. People like to rag on Ozzy for his voice but I think his voice has a lot of character. It's just a classic. Always will be.
It starts with the "diabolus in musica" tritone. It's the first heavy metal album. It's a sweeping roller coaster mixing blues-inspired evil riffs and haunted vocals. Toni Iommi makes the best of his guitar playing abilities, favoring evocative suspensions and sudden maniacal bursts. Ozzy Osbourne howls (unintentionally) funny lyrics once in a while, but most of the times what he howls about is on point to suggest the necessary ambiance. And this impulsive studio performance of all four members is the first of a handful that left their stamp on the history of rock. To put it in a nutshell, it's a stone-clod classic. Number of albums left to review or just listen to: more than 900, I've temporarily lost count here Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: approximately a half so far (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: a quarter Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): the last quarter
Not sure I quite got into this as much as the others but as a debut and what is claimed to be the first heavy metal album means I'll give it a bonus star. Fave: Black Sabbath
Definitely not as concise as their subsequent albums, but I love it anyway. Not a 5/5 compared to their own discography, but I say it's a 5/5 on this 1001 list Full of killer, catchy riffs
Místico, con buenos riffs y métricas. Buenas notas de blues y pentatonicas
I love evil music! I want to listen to music that would get me burned at the stake in the 15th century! The spooky Halloween atmosphere is awesome, too bad it's May right now. Full of bangers - the title track is a contender for best metal song of all time. "N.I.B." was sick, so was "The Wizard". I gotta say, thanks for using the harmonica in its intended form - a horror instrument. Take notes, Bob Dylan - I don't want to hear your screeching piece of rusty metal in an otherwise beautiful song. The harmonica is a demonic instrument that summons demons.
First time I've heard this album. Thought it was brilliant. Loved the sound. to think this was out at the end of the 60's
The very first heavy metal album - it's a legend!
✊🏻🎧
Classic. Amazing start to finish.
5/5. 2 legendary 😎🤘
I love Doom, and it is so vital in a Doom fan's knowledge base to have this album.
Didn't need to listen to this to give it 5. Did anyway. A fantastic record.
Paranoid will always be the best Sabbath album in my eyes. But Black Sabbath birthed a genre, and their music perfectly captures the atmosphere of Birmingham and their origins. 5/5.
The first four Sabbath records are flawless. The absolute origin of metal music, their self-titled debut is not only dark, thick, and heavy, but also very playful. So much modern metal forged in the wake of this album is performed by better musicians, but very few exhibit the creativity and willingness to experiment to the extent that Sabbath does here. It's over 50 years and this continues to inspire bands to grab a guitar and stare into the void.
Wonderfully heavy. Notes of electric gloom. An acceptance of death.
OMG, I am so excited! I question the must-hear nature of some album choices, but this is a dead set classic that kicked off a whole genre. Still with reminders that they were, at heart, a heavy blues band, they have descended down a path to a new place. I listen to contemporary stoner metal and doom, and I can hear the direct influence of this seminal work being played today.
Perfection.
O começo do esplendor do metal
5.5…. A classic among classics….16, grade 9, long hair ,army jacket, work boots…teenage angst….what’s not to love…absolutely cherished this album.
The wonderfully dumb alpha and omega.

Pure metal gold
Vibes
Holy shit, I forgot that this is one hell of an album
One of the most influential albums ever made. An explosive rhythm section, fuzzy guitar riffing and ozzys oddball vocal performance all made for something very distinct in the early 70s, but even thought it's been ripped off a million times and not novel sounding any more the strength of the songwriting still is better than most albums in its genre. The opener is the standout with it's tritone based riff and eerie atmosphere but the groove heavy blues rock of NIB also is incredible. Basically every riff is catchy.
The album that melted my mind as a child and set me on a path that 40 years later has not disappointed. One of the true GOATS.
Oh hells yes.
A true classic
5/5
easy 5
Insert Beavis and Butthead head banging here
Good album. Would rate it 8/10.
Classic down tempo metal!
Classique! J'adore et ça me rememore plein de souvenirs 5*
Pioneros del heavy-metal. Rock con mayúsculas. Inconfundible voz, acordes y estilo.
Legendary guitar riffs
This album has one of my favorite songs of all time.
Yes, \_ _/
Now here's one I've heard often enough to give it a straight 5 without re-listening, even though it's been quite a while that I last heard it. Of course, I still re-listened and it was a pleasure to do so. Not only was this the album that originated metal music as we know it today, but it has also stood the test of time really well and is still a great album when listened to today. Favorite tracks N.I.B. and Warning
Wow this fucking slapped hard. MASTAPIECE!
