Reviews (page 6 of 16)

One of the most important musical albums in people's history! The first "heavy metal" album at all! The sound of the album has got the roots in rock, hard rock, jazz, blues and psychedelia with adding of heavy distortion and creating completely a new genre. It was a starting point of separation heavy metal from "rock and roll" and also a prototype to a lot of future rock musical genres. This album was also credited as the first record in sludge / stoner rock and goth genres. Long guitar solos reminds of progressive metal sound. Also Kurt Cobain wanted Nevermind to sound more like Black Sabbath so this albums also has got an influence to alternative rock and grunge sounds. Completely must listen and must have in collection if you re a fan of hard rock / heavy metal / alternative music!

The origin of all things devil-horned \m/

#5 Black Sabbath was awesome!!! 1st 5 stars!! Music was the kind of stuff I love!!!

One of the classic great Metal albums, and I've heard it many times before. Though listening this time, several years after the first, I now see the blues influences better. The same kind of driving bass and simple melodies that would go on and become the basis for Funk and Disco. Neat stuff that.

Yes! This album starts so heavy with the devils chord and it commands your attention. This is a landmark hard rock album and a great one that still holds up. Favorite Tracks: "Black Sabbath" "The Wizard" "NIB"

It’s just so good. Not as many “hits” on their debut as say something like Paranoid but still an awesome Moody albums that blends blues rock and psychedelic into something dark, beautiful and new- Heavy Metal. An excellent debut that successfully established the feel of the band with catchy riffs, low growling guitars, and satanic lyricism. Yay!

Only thing to really say is, "Sabbath fucking rules." A record that, even over 50 years ago, everyone is trying to clone and improve upon. Delightfully occult, heavy, and just makes you want to headbang. Contains my favorite Sabbath song: "N.I.B.", once described as "the raucous defiling of Cream", a better description I cannot supply. Favorite tracks: "Black Sabbath", "Wasp/Behind the Wall of Sleep/Bassically/N.I.B."

The most influential album of all time. It's almost undeniable. Every single metal band can be tracked back to this singular album. The title track is a harrowing descent into occultism, The Wizard is an amazing piece, and the bass throughout the album is incredible. There will never be an album that will change the landscape of music like this one did ever again. Highlights: 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.

grande ozzy

The album that started heavy metal. Love the rain on the opening track, followed by the haunting riffs.

Metal del bueno. Aquí empezó el metal

The first albums of legendary bands tend to be either disappointing or incredible. Pleasantly surprised to Sabbath falls in the latter camp.

Yeah, ok Sabbath you can have loads of stars.

This is the Devil's music. Won't somebody please think of the children??????

How many times a band makes a debut like this?

Classic metal album, and my favorite from Sabbath

Incredibly enjoyable. Set me down a rabbit hole of listening to loads of their other albums having never listened to them before.

Still great. Spent all day listening to Sabbath after

Un disco bestial

my favorite songs were the wizard and NIB (but that one is like together with two other songs). i thought the guitar solos were super cool, the lyrics were wild, and i could really see how this changed the course of metal music.

Damn! Everyone kills it in this group. Ozzy is legendary obvi, guitar wails (and solos are much better than van halen imo), bass is dark and rich, and drums take it to the next level. Love NIB, love it all

Heavy metal.

muy muy muy verga

Love it from go to whoa. Bass & slapping drums that fit snuggly, guitar solos that added to the songs.

Classic for a reason. Timeless. Played it twice.

Take your 5 stars!

A classic.

Class 👌🏻

Very excited by the intro. Yeah, really liking this. I can hear how influenced Ty Segall is by Black Sabbath in these songs. Each of these songs are just instantly likable. I don't love the vocals but they aren't unbearable and there are so many redeeming qualities to the music. I was of course aware of Black Sabbath but had never listened to a whole album. I think I'm a new fan. Wow, Wicked World almost sounds like a jazz tune at times. Yeah this album kicks ass. Love the way the songs mesh together. Liked it even better on the second listen, and was better able to appreciate the expressiveness and vulnerability in Ozzy's vocal delivery.

It's the album that gave us heavy metal, what needs to be said? Thanks?

Fucking sick

What a classic!

SABBATH!

Love Black Sabbath. This is such a great album, and historically very significant as a genre originator. Factoring in historical significance, this is an easy 5 star. The musical talent in the band reinforces that as well. The drumming especially is awesome.

Gotta give full 5 star respect to the originators. Great musicians. Must have been wild to hear this the year it came out.

Surely and factually genre defining. I didn't think metal could hold so much blues influence, but damn they make it work. This album was probably one of my most worth listens and also one of the more intriguing ones. This album resembles the birth of metal and reading about that while blasting these tunes has surely opened the tab on a good and lasting memory

38min long of solid good

5 stars obviously c'mon

Ett mästerverk.

Is oval equivalent of hanging out. Lots of repetition and holding patterns. Develops significantly throughout it the album and gets really really good.

If you like thick fuzzed out guitar riffs this is the album for you! I felt like there wasn't quite as much variety as previous Sabbath albums on the generator but still a super fun listen.

Way proggier than I expected. This is not the radio hit that I associate with some of the later Sabbath work. I can definitely see how this inspired subsequent metal genres, as it sounds way ahead of its time.

06/22 Classic and legendary album!

i generally enjoyed

Kiiillaaah

Classic

I definitely liked the music and the heavy guitar sounds. I didn’t know this was the first real heavy metal album produced. I didn’t really dig the lyrics but the vibe was good.

My appreciation for this album (and Black Sabbath in general) is a 4 or a 5, but my actual anjoyment of this album was closer to a 3. I'm not a huge doom metal expert/historian or anything, but I do dabble a bit in that genre, and I like it a lot heavier and riff-ier than this. It is crazy to imagine what this must have sounded like back in 1970 though.

Great album! Love Black Sabbath. Not as strong as Paranoid though.

yes, the king ozzy, could never be less than a 4, epic songs

Its a good album

I’m not sure why I never got into Black Sabbath. I was huge into Zeppelin circa 1995, you would have thunk Sabbath would be a natural next step. Well it wasn’t. So here we are.

Amazing album, I’ll never get tired of it. Doesn’t quite reach the heights of paranoid

I loved this one. Ozzy shows a wide range of vocals on this album and for a first album. The musicianship is awesome

I find instrumental-heavy metal tracks to be very bland, so I really appreciate how toned down the instrumentals are in Black Sabbath's early albums. It makes the melodies sound so much more pleasant. And of course Ozzy has a unique voice that works so well with the riffs. 3.5 stars.

Sweetheart Of The Rodeo The Byrds The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway Genesis

Had never given them a try before; enjoyed something new. No real faves.

Unique

Ensimmäinen metallilevy. Vaikka tää ei mitään raskasta oo nykystandardeilla niin, Black Sabbath kappaleessa on jotain synkkää. Ja levyllä muutenkin hyvä fiilis. Paljon sellaisia tunnelmallisia hetkiä. Blues vaikutteet kuulee kanssa selkeästi. Jämäkkää kampetta. Parhaat: Black Sabbath, N.I.B, Warning,

I had never actually listened to this record before and I like it a lot. Amazing that it came out in 1970. The members of Black Sabbath grew up in post war Birmingham- a very industrial city. Tony Iommi lost the tips of two of his fingers in an industrial accident which affected his guitar playing sound. The music they made was dark, angry, and industrial sounding in a way that hadn’t been done before. The bass playing by Geezer Butler on the other hand sounds a lot like Jack Bruce in Cream. The back and forth between Iommi and Butler gives Sabbath a unique sound. Super important album even if a lot of what it inspired turned out to be shite. A lot of fun to listen to.

Solid rock album, the guitar solo at the end of wicked World was awesome

Strong 4

Damn it’s just so much better when you consider the context of 1970. Zeppelin was probably the heaviest at this point, and suddenly you have metal music about satan. It even holds up listening today, as someone who listens to a good deal of death metal I found it actually refreshing to have lyrics that aren’t over the top. Less is often more, and in this case everything is shadowy enough to have an even more haunting effect. Also in the decades where we’re so used to bands using lyrics that blatantly advocate for violence, I notice here that sometimes yes Ozzy is portraying Lucifer, but other times he is terrorized by Lucifer. As a Christian, I think the effect is much more substantial, Ozzy is speaking to the desire and charisma of evil, and it turns out that’s very, very terrifying. Shoutout NIB. Not five stars just because I’m not too impressed with Ward and Iommi here, I’ll probably be crucified for this… band is a bit sloppy at times, and it is cool and refreshing to my modern ears to hear a real live band playing, but it just feels like they haven’t yet really come into their own musically

The dawn of metal - dark, malevolent blues cranked up to 11. Just the beginning.

Great album. Much more melodic than anticipated, and while Ozzy's voice is often grating to me it didn't bother me here.

Really good, not my exact cup of tea tho

was very scared this was going to be boring dad rock but im shocked i fuck with it heavy. definitely keeps you attention the whole time and cohesive doesnt feel like its dragging ever damn!!!

Good stuff, and a pretty fun album. Favorite track on here was probably The Wizard. Black Sabbath doesn't always scratch the metal itch for me, but I also can always enjoy their albums.

I've heard about this album before, and I know a couple of songs. I can't say I'm into it, despite the fact that I like some of the black sabbath's sobgs

4. 1st side is a 10 out of 5 but the second side plods and meanders. Pivotal album for what it represented and spawned, for good and ill.

Very few albums make me want to travel back in time and hear it during the time it was released than this.

3-4 songs, I likey. Damn so this is the birth of the Metal genre, it is such a fairly tolerable kind of metal, not the death metal stuff which is generally associated with it Loved Black Sabbath Wizard A few jiska naam mujhe ydd ni

It is like most debut albums: scrappy, hungry, (over)ambitious... but there are no growing pains to speak of. The Sabbath you get here are in proper fighting form, harmonicas and all. Among the best A sides in all of metal. It took Metallica a few records to change (ruin?) metal music, but it only took Black Sabbath one to make it something worth carving into your notebook.

I suppose I should blow the dust off some D&D books, scrounge up a Ouija board, and start worshipping the devil. At least that's the way I was told I might react to listening to Black Sabbath or any other heavy metal. The only spell this cast on me was one to engage my ears. The tone is absolutely dark and raw, but it has a level of polish that screams of professionalism. Amazing to read that this was all recorded in a single 12 hour session. I bet the live shows were fantastic. Black Sabbath

It was a really good album. You can feel the roots being planted for some of their later hits.

literally grew up on black sabbath lol black sabbath - 5/5 the wizard - 5/5 behind the wall of sleep - 4/5 N.I.B - 4/5 evil woman, don't play games with me - 3/5 sleeping village - 3/5 warning - 5/5 (omg this one is so long) wicked world - 4/5 33/40 = 4/5

My rating 4.2 I think this is a great album. Quite the debut!

Maybe I was primed for it, but I swear I heard every metal technique of the future, at least in passing. The rest was all blues! The mix and production are dated but still pretty great too. Nice to still be able to hear bass.

It's really nice, when i listened to it first all songs sounds same.but then i started listening it multiple times ,these songs are crazy

A fantastic album with an incredibly eerie and unsettling atmosphere from beginning to end. The mood it creates is unlike anything else, and it is easy to see why it became so influential. The vocals are excellent throughout, the riffs are memorable and powerful, and every track contributes to the album’s dark identity. It is a truly unique record that absolutely deserves its place on the list.

I've never listened to really early Black Sabbath before, this is great. 4/5

Love love love. Riff after riff, great solos, great rhythmic devices, fun storytelling and good basslines too. I love how murky and eerie it is (that opening! so much atmospheric!), and the way they leave space/silence in the music. Would love to have been around when this first came out and seen the reaction/excitement. Will definitely be listening again.

I really liked this. Definitely a unique piece for its time. Lots more bass features than I remembered, but then I've never really given BS a chance. It's so nice to hear all of the influences that other artists I love have taken from them - I need to do a deeper dive on their Ozzy-fronted library.

"Mom, where did Black Sabbath come from?" Well, son... one day Daddy Blues met Mother Metal. One time they felt like they were made for one another. And when two musical genres really like one another enough they can make a beautiful album. They called it Black Sabbath. "But Mom, *why* did they think they were made for one another." Well, son, they did drugs. Lots and lots of drugs. "Wow, so we all should do lots of drugs" Now you are reading directly from the gospel. Osborn 3:33: Doeth all the drugs and don't let anyone stop you. "Is Ozzy a messenger angel from God?" Oh honey, he isn't from that direction.....

Infant metal. A wonderous, grand experiment that's darker, distorted, louder blues which is an oversimplification of what metal is. This isn't even Black Sabbath's final form but the blue prints for some wonderful new genre takes form. 4

I've never been a diehard Black Sabbath fan. I only know the hits. This album was a surprise, as it's pretty far from what comes to mind when I hear the band's name. It was kind of bluesy and led zeppelinish. Not my favourite stuff, but I can appreciate what's going on.

Baby metal.

I'm not much of a heavy metal person, so I've never really been into Black Sabbath much, but I definitely appreciate what the band and this album meant to the whole heavy metal genre. Outside of their more commercial hits that everyone knows, I haven't really listened to them and didn't know anything on this album. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. First, while it definitely had a lot of that "heavy metal" sound to it, the music also had a surprising amount of blues sound as well. Second, the guitar was just amazing. And third, the fact that this album was recorded in just one 12 hour live session makes it worthy of the list alone. I enjoyed listening to this one a lot more than I thought I would.

Solid, even though I'm not a big Ozzy guy. More bluesy than I expected, in addition to of course metal rocking classic rock.

Very solid, seminal metal album.

I had never heard any of these Black Sabbath songs previously. I believe I listened to the American version of the album. I was shocked by the harmonica on "The Wizard," in the best way. I could see myself listening to this again, in the background, or with more focus.

Very unexpected 4 star here. Good stuff.

needed to be listening to this at full volume with surround sound

Loving it, not listened to much Black Sabbath N.I.B straight onto liked songs playlist. Definitely one to listen to again and again.

birth of heavy metal!

Banger

fun album, very good musically and definitely good for the gym!! probably wont add any music to my playlist but now I can recognize their music!

This was a very pleasant surprise. I know thr hits but have never listened to them otherwise. It made me feel like I could actually be a fan of their stuff. Great guitar too.

Just top notch, and the autoplay changed albums and I didn't even notice at first. Top notch classic metal.

So freaking innovative.

A solid start to a successful career by the band. You can hear so many elements that made Black Sabbath and Ozzy a big star

The original metal merchants. Riffs that go on for days, vaguely satanic lyrics and the sound of impending doom. Interesting that it was panned by critics when it first came out, but now regarded as a classic. Black Sabbath, The Wizard and N.I.B. all great tracks

I love this band and songs. Reminds me of when my dad introduced me to rock and metal.

I cant believe I was missing out on this. I normally avoid this genre like the plague, but this was great. No ear piercing scream vocals, no overstimulating one note guitar, no shitty performative lyrics? What is happening? The only negative is that I don't love the idea of a fourteen minute song, (closing track no less) but it wasn't too bad. The vibes/aesthetic of this record are very cool. Opening with the thunder and keeping that somewhat sinister sound throughout the track list. Four stars. (Favorite track: Black Sabbath.)

Insanely good guitar playing. Never have been a huge fan of Ozzy’s voice. Guitar on NIB and bass on Evil Woman went super hard. Overall a pretty great album, last three songs had a hell of a run to finish the album. 4.5

Sabbath with Ozzy, dude! (a common refrain from my stoner, rocker friends in the early 80s) Among the first, if not the first, metal albums this was incredibly innovative. This album contains all of the signature sounds that would define early Sabbath, albeit somewhat less developed that the albums that followed. All the same, it is remarkable how well many of the tunes hold up today. Many of the songs are instantly recognizable by anyone who has not been living under a rock. This is iconic and highly influential music. I owned this album 40 years ago. It is telling that I enjoyed listening to it just as much today, despite ever evolving personal music tastes. RIP Ozzy.

Meget genredefinerende album.

Actually just listened to this. Not as good as Paranoid, but truly solid. 4 stars. Boolean rating: yes, for sure

Aber keine besonderen Highlights. Deshalb fehlt Stern Nr. 5.

I liked this. Proper grooves and excellent bass lines. But short of stand out bangers but very listenable

The Wizard

Classic- puts you in the right mood for listening right off the bat. For all of the satanic panic this may have kicked off, it was surprisingly tame.

🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑 OH NOOOOO, OH PLEASE GOD HELP ME!!!!! When I was an angsty thirteen year old and Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and Wolfmother were my lifeblood, I thought this album—even that first song—was just okay, a little slow for my liking. Why then, have I kept waking up with little licks of "N.I.B," "The Wizard," "Wicked World," and "Behind the Wall of Sleep" stuck in my head for nearly the next thirteen years of my life? A fantastic album, especially considering the historical context. My rating would be higher, but I had to hold myself back and admit this album does meander quite a bit, squiggling over into Iommi spaghetti or else devolving into sort of yawning, atmospheric sections without much resolution. For as strong of a debut as this is, they wouldn't be the Black Sabbath everyone pretends to know and love without Paranoid first. But still—incredible start. 1: Bad | 2: Okay, No Desire to Revisit | 3: Good, Conditionally (OR Inconsistent Mix of Qualities | 4: Great (OR Technically amazing but missing the sauce emotionally) | 5: Amazing

Almost a 5-star album just based on sheer influence, but not quite there for me as a whole in terms of personal enjoyment. However - the opener is just stunningly evocative and is pretty much ground zero for heavy metal. Nothing really sounded quite like what they conjured up here in 1970 with the doomy, occult atmosphere and the slow crushing riff. The rest of the album has its moments (NIB is my favorite of the later tracks) but is less overtly metal as we know it and more just hard blues, which is why I'm probably not 5 stars here, but hard to deny the importance of this album.

Good atiff

What else can be said. Overrated but influential

Only a 4 because I know Paranoid is on the list. But oof, what an angry sounding jazz quartet!

Oh yeah, know this one is great! Been getting more and more into Black Sabbath lately, and damn they were legends for a reason. This is an awesome album and basically started it all for metal, but their following albums were even better imo.

Such a cool debut album. Considering the time it came out, this was very different than anything else. It was darker than the psych stuff before that, definitely heavier than the popular stuff at the time (few bands withstanding) and really helped drive what became a "metal" sound. Those three tones at the beginning of Black Sabbath are something you can never really get out of your head. From there, its just you pulled into the mind of a madman.

This is from 1970 so I'm going to keep that in mind as I review the album. I love the aesthetics they've got going on, and over all the sound isn't bad. But it's just not as good as what came a couple of years after. It's hard to be both accurate and recognizing the influence of an album in a simple 5 star review. I kind of enjoyed the album, but I wouldn't say it's one of my favourites. 4/5 bumping up for 1970

I don't know why I've never actively sought out to listen to Black Sabbath records. It seems a pretty large misstep by me.

4.3 Estrellita a 1, 4 y 7

Toimiva ossi. Hyvääää settiä!!

A good record, I think sabbath were a bit primitive at this point, and it doesn't hold up as well as some of their later records, but it hit quite hard nonetheless.

Rip ozzy.

that's cool but not my taste

Not as good as their later work, but showing a lot of promise and quality regardless

Enjoyable

Glassikko.

No private session used for Spotify. I listened to this album several times, I like its. It's dark, dramatic and heavy.

In my opinion, this is a cool album, it has a slightly spooky feel, but in my opinion, the mysterious or horror feel can be improved. I only found that in Sleeping Village and Black Sabbath, although there are others, but those two are the most impressive. The instruments are clearly extraordinary and very cool but I think its like other heavy metal bands instrument in general. Favorite tracks: Wicked World and Evil Women Don't Play Your Games with Me

Oh, having just heard Paranoid I am excited! Yes, and after Jamiroquai a nice palate cleanser. Not as good as Paranoid. Still really good. 4 stars. Boolean rating: yes, I am glad I heard this before I died.

Enjoyed them, maybe like 4.5? Again, much more chill than I assumed they'd be

Black Sabbath - 4.5/5 The Wizard - 4/5 Behind the Wall of Sleep - 4/5 N.I.B. - 4.5/5 Evil Woman - 4/5 Sleeping Village - 4/5 Warning - 4/5 So that's what early heavy metal sounded like. It's a really good start for them and the genre, but I really feel they perfected their craft with their next album that somehow came out less than a year later. Overall: 4/5 Favorites; Black Sabbath, N.I.B.

Extra points for Cadence of Part Time Poets reference

This album has really been overshadowed by some of Sabbath's later work, most obviously the cultural touchstone that is Paranoid, and to a lesser extent some of Ozzy's solo releases, but if Paranoid ran the self-title did much better than merely walking. A lot of the metal staples this album would perform such a major role in bringing into being, but of course that's because everything has to start somewhere, and metal started here. Perhaps more of a historical curiosity than a truly conventional metal album, or even conventional Sabbath album ironically, this album is well worth the time if only to understand how we got to where we are, and does a lot more than just educate during that runtime. Perhaps not as loaded with hits as the albums that followed, the self-title still includes a healthy amount of super tracks. Shame in an album with not many tracks on it that two are covers, never my favourite, but you have to invent the wheel before you can do much with it, so this is more forgivable. Thanks for all your hard work, lads.

Good album, not my style

Considering this is the first metal album ever, it’s impressive just how developed this sound already is. This doesn’t sound like a newly emerging genre, which still retains certain qualities from more conventional music of the time. This sounds like a metal album. A really good one too. “The Wizard” rocks so hard, I love putting a harmonica in a metal song. Same with “N.I.B..” “Wicked World” is so good too. Why am I even listing songs? The whole album rocks like crazy! RIP Ozzy Osbourne.

Classic, definitely not nearly as consistently interesting as their next couple of albums but still undeniably important.

Surpreendentemente bom

Includes three of their best songs but the others aren’t at the same level. Master of Reality should be on the list as a better album but I suppose this is historically significant.

Warning is fantastisch

I'm pissed at Ice T, I had the Iceberg long before I heard this album so the intro is tainted. I first heard this several months ago on the recommendation of Mojo Reiser, really like the variety. I thought it would be pretty one note but there is a lot going on here. Pre-brain melt Ozzy is something else. 4.5

It's hard for me to rate this in a vacuum - their following albums are so much more up my alley. This shit definitely rocks, and is obviously a landmark album for heavy metal....just doesn't have the replay-ability for me. 4.5

This album was unreal... Wicked. The guitar was absolutely shredding, the vocals were crisp, and the drummer was very talented. I enjoyed this listen very much!

Day 238 Some of the best riffs in rock Highlights The Wizard NIB Evil Woman..

Wowowowowow

The late, great Prince of Darkness and the boys. Is this the first metal album? I always forget how bluesy it is but fuck me if it isn't spectacular.

Fire AF

8 very good long songs which I lik

Full of powerful guitar solos and I love it! It’s organic, and the drums are perfect. No over the top arrangements on this album. The main rule is: keep it simple, keep it organic and this will be a classic.

FAVS (top 3): black sabbath, behind the wall of sleep, sleeping village mençoes honrosas: N.I.B., wicked world gostosinho gente dahora de ouvar, nem parece q tem mais de 40 min de duraçao passou voandoooo eu amo! nota final: 4/5

RIP Ozzy

after sitting through innn-gadda-da-vida, this was a breath of fresh air.

an interesting listen

Great album by one of the best 70s bands.

Was expecting abrasive proto-metal but was surprised to hear more like classic rock tuned a little darker. Very good. Also, I’m a sucker for sick bass lines what can I say?

Thank God for this palette cleanser after Kid Rock. Black Sabbath goes so hard. This is sooo good and every member of this band is so talented. Black Sabbath has better albums for sure, but this is a great debut. Actual rating...4.5 Liked Songs: The whole album is great, but "Evil Woman" is probably my least favorite.

Behind the wall of sleep= gran riff y solo de guitarra, todo guitarra acá. Puntaje final= 8/10

DOOM METAL!

its so iconic that its hard to rate seriously

All hail the prince of darkness!!

First time listen Never heard their first album before somehow. While I think it's a good listen in its own right, I think the most interesting aspect is hearing the beginnings of their style and consequently one of the driving forces behind metal as a whole. You'll hear some shit that sounds 20 years ahead of its time in one second and then a blues rock lick will remind you this is somehow an album from the 70s. You can still hear those influences on later albums but the blues influence is especially prominent here. Really enjoyed it Favorite tracks: The Wizard, NIB Least favorite: Evil Woman 4/5

Love it! I've heard the wizard in isolation before, but it made it even better to hear it within the album. This is going to fast become a heavy rotation album for me. I'm pissed It wasn't before. I can only imagine how hard they'd have gone live back in the 70's. No notes.

great!!

I will give this a 4 and that is saying something as I am not a big heavy metal fan.

You wouldn't like me when I mekar cykel

genuinely so goated. i probably prefer paranoid but this is one hell of an album. NIB is probably my fave but i like wicked world and black sabbath alot too. also I love the album cover so much, its so strange and raw

very technically impressive

Listening to it now after decades of metal and all sorts of metal variation, its hard to put yourself into the shoes of a teenager in 1970s England hearing this for the first time. Does it still slap hard? Yes, the guitar riffs are crazy, breaks open the doors of metal, atonal in all the right ways, Ozzy is amazing vocally before it becomes a self parody. While it has been surpassed in dozens and dozens of ways over the last 50+ years, sometimes the original is still incredible and seeing the genesis of a genre is amazing.

Very good but you can definitely tell it their first album

I think they would go on to perfect this sound on their later albums, but I think this perfectly lays out the foundation for what metal music would become. Some absolutely fantastic tracks on here with the title track and N.I.B in particular still standing up there as two of the best songs in the entire genre. The other songs here are all varying degrees of good but there's nothing here that matches the heaviness of those two. This is far from my favourite album from these guys but this is still a super impressive debut that holds up against most of what modern metal has to offer. Fav Songs: N.I.B, Black Sabbath, Warning, Evil Woman Least Fav: Sleeping Village 8.8/10

First ever Black Sabbath album listen. I liked.

Wizard - what a track!

RIP Ozzy. He was truly one of the legends. This is my last Sabbath album and can honestly say I like them much more than I thought I did. And I realize during The Wizard that people will deal with things in music they like that they will not in music they hate. This is a song about a wizard. If this was a different band these lyrics would overshadow everything else. These guys hate politicians...that's a message I can get behind. This album is better than I anticipated as well.

It’s easy to underplay how sophisticated an album this is. Yes, there’s Ozzys banshee howl, and the riffs are endless. But there’s so much more that. Bill wards drums swing, far more jazz than metal and the bass brings a supple rhythm to everything.i

I liked this. Wasn't expecting to be into metal but hey

9/10 sólido, gratamente sorprendido de tanta base blues. Canción preferida: The wizard

Not as good as the previously-reviewed Paranoid, but still pretty damned good. Their self-titled song is the best thing on here, but overall the amazing trio of Iommi, Butler and Ward just no how to craft heavy rhythms and riffs infused with melody. It's funny that contemporary reviews criticized them for sounding too much like Cream, and I hear that a bit (the riff from "Sunshine Of Your Love" is lifted wholesale at one point), but regardless "Black Sabbath" and "The Wizard" are total Sabbath, and they only start sounding really conventional when we hit Side Two.

Very cool, first dip in for me and very much enjoyed it

*It's interesting how much heavy metal started out influence so much by blues rock. This would more likely be released by the Black Keys today as opposed to a metal band. *Overall fantastic groundbreaking album

Ive heard this album a few times, and every time I listen to it I’m amazed I don’t listen to more Sabbath.

Pretty a8

Way sicker than I thought it’d be (no offense Ozzy RIP)

A bunch of people being scared because of an album with a song on it about Gandalf is the funniest thing to me

This really feels like Tony Iommi’s band much more than Ozzy’s, given how many times it abandons typical rock song structure for riffs and guitar noodling. That’s a good thing when the riffs are interesting, which is often the case here, but it makes it a bit hard to recall the songs after a while. Good for a first album, but I think they could have tightened up and improved it by removing some of the less interesting noodle breaks.

Not as great as their follow-ups but whoa what an earth shaking debut.

fav songs the wizard n.i.b satan blues, 666, riff 70/100

I find the younger Ozzy voice so beautifully distracting that it's difficult to pay much attention to anything else that's going on around it. They have better albums than this, but this is still a joy to listen to. Seriously though, that voice, it's like a gift from the heavens.

Day 9 — Black Sabbath — Black Sabbath (1970) Listened: Mar 3, 2026 Genre: Proto-Metal / Doom Metal Vibe: Dark horror heavy metal Highlights: • The Wizard • Wasp / Behind the Wall of Sleep / Bassically / N.I.B. • A Bit of Finger / Sleeping Village / Warning Impression: Great from start to finish. Great riffs and dark lyrics create an epically haunting vibe that defined the genre. Rating: 3.5/5 Keep songs? Yes Revisit album? Yes

🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

Liked this a lot more than I thought I would. Can't imagine how mind blowing this must've been in 1970.

This album might not be as catchy and filled with hits as Paranoid but honestly that's ok, it's amazing in its own way. Initially I didn't like it as much because it's more of a slowburn, but once it hits it really hits. The crushing walls of guitar, the dark atmosphere and creepy vocal performances just create a world of its own. From the heavy guitar riff of the intro track to Ozzy's manic screaming the song feels like entering hell, and the rest of the album feels like that hell breaking down in front of you slowly. These guy must have been batshit insane to have released this in 1970, but hey at least we got a streak of classic albums out of their insanity.

Genre defining! Made by people who didn't quite know where their sound was or heading!

Spännande musik att lyssna på! NIB var najs

Epic. I like the guitars!!! OZZY OSBORNE IS A SICK NAME!!!! Great atmospheric music

The beginning sounds like what the news guy in Five Years was talking about but in a 70s rock way The Wizard was added to my Glam 'n' Rock playlist Behind The Wall Of Sleep makes me feel like I'm in tcoptp they studied guitar 6-7/10 Ig I'm bad at rating things lmao the good old times when a 8 song album went over 40 minutes

I enjoy some heavy metal, but I'm not a fan of the genre. Black Sabbath's sound has always struck me as very heavy classic rock, and I can definitely see how many regard their first album as the foundation of the heavy metal genre. I haven't explored their catalog that much, but I've listened to Paranoid, and, especially, Master of Reality, which I love, many times. I was glad to get the opportunity to give their self-titled debut a few spins to listen to it closely. True to its reputation, it's full of great riffs, dark themes, and, of course, Ozzy as he was still developing his considerable talent as a frontman. The album was certainly enjoyable, and it's clear why it has the reputation that it does. For my part, I experienced it as a very heavy psychedelic blues album. It was absolutely innovative and enjoyable, and, of course, "important" (TM), but not a masterpiece like Master of Reality. Four stars.

Very bluesy I like it alot. :3 8/10. I would rate it higher if it was longer

Not bad for classic rock. I’m not a fan of ozzy. But can see how this was a big deal

I’m now 4-for-4 with albums that would not have occurred to me to put on a 1001 must-listen list. They’ve all been good, just not what I’d consider representative of their respective bands. Unlike previous albums this is my first time hearing any of these tracks. If I were to listen to an instrumental version of this album, without Ozzy’s distinctive voice to guide me, I doubt I’d be able to guess it’s Sabbath. It’s probably just my ignorance and my relatively young ears, but it sounds more like something I’d expect to hear at Woodstock than a civic auditorium. Nevertheless you can certainly hear the beginnings of metal’s defining sound forming here. Interesting little time capsule.

8/10 great sound even tho its not exactly what i want from metal. you have to give it its props and all the songs are good.

Me sorprendió para bien, muy místico.

Pretty solid first album.

historically significant

this album was the creation of heavy metal. amazing riffs. bass and guitar are so good. (8/10)

I LOVE EVERYTHING W GOTH IN IT. also the guitar is cheff kiss in this album.

It is a great album, it is really cool to hear how you can still hear some stuff of theirs back in the entire metal genre. At the same time I always find it funny to hear how close this is to something like Led Zeppelin, but we always put one in rock and the other in metal. To make slightly blasphemous confession. I've never really listened to Black Sabbath even though I truly consider myself a metal head. But I think I'll use this album as a starting point to take a deep dive.

The only metal I ever adored

Absolutely fantastic. So close to a 5, the guitar work is phenomenal.

Having listened to "Paranoid" so many times, this debut feels like a dress rehearsal for that record. It's hard to hear it with fresh ears, but it completely holds up. The riffs are excellent, though I will say that by the time you get to the final track you feel like they're repeating themselves a bit. And as usual I find the guitar soloing in some sections to be a bit tedious. Even so, no one was making music like this in 1969/70- even their heavy metal predecessors like Zeppelin and Blue Cheer didn't sound anything like this. Excellent. FOUR STARS

There were heavy albums before this, but this is probably the first one that is recognizable as metal today. And it still holds up as one of the best metal albums despite all the innovation since. That's crazy - that's not true of early rock, hip hop, or electronic, to give some examples. The opener is a quantum leap in heaviness and atmosphere over anything else rock had done at that point. While proto-metal had often opted for fuzzed-out blues, the title track is crisp and clear, but slow and sinister. "N.I.B." is another highlight with its pounding riff; it genuinely sounds like it could have come out recently and has effectively dark lyrics. Some of this, like "Evil Woman," is just loud blues, but even those tracks are mostly great. Ozzy's vocals are excellent and Bill Ward is one of my favorite drummers. Few albums this innovative still sound so fresh 20, let alone 50, years later.

You know, I thought I would struggle through this album. But I really didnt, very much enjoyed the guitar work and the vocals from Ozzy! Very cool album overall, some great individual songs but also a v cohesive mix put together. Wow

It's been said a thousand times but the song Black Sabbath really did seem to capture the essence of the band and lay the blueprint of what was to come, although having said that, the rest of this album is generally a lot bluesier than that and than what I was expecting. The riffs are already there though backed by that swinging rhythm section that gives it a real deep groove and keeps it from becoming too stiff. They're both as essential as each other, yin and yang, perfect harmony. And the final key ingredient of Ozzy's vocals, which are unconventional and often erratic. He wasn't great technically but he has character and a knack for both knowing when to pick out a really interesting vocal melody as well as doubling down on the guitar riff to really hammer home the power of it.

very good album

Black Sabbath 3/5 The Wizard 4/5 Wasp/Behind the Wall of Sleep/Bassically/NIB 3/5 Wicked World 3/5 A Bit of Finger 3/5 Overall Album 3.6

Black Sabbath - 4/5 The Wizard - 4.5/5 Behind the Wall of Sleep - 4/5 N.I.B. - 4/5 Evil Woman - 4/5 Wicked World - 4/5

I liked this

Wow a second Black Sabbath album in three days. Is it really a random generator? That's actually a great choice for today. As I'm in a Sabbath faze right now . The first track is a massive one. It legitimately carries the name of the band. What a way to start a career. So dark, moody and majestic. The wizard is a great example for the blues influences of the band. Great drums. A very enjoyable song. 3 is another blues influenced track. Great vocals from Ozzy. N.i.b. is another killer track with awesome vocals and bassss. Amazing double guitar solo at the end. Geezer's bass on evil woman if what makes this track great instead of just good enough. Track 6 is a good different edition to the record, with the acoustic beginning. Great guitar work. Warning has a bluesy, almost jazzy feel to it. It's the longest track here and definitely takes you to a ride. It really demonstrates how good as a musicians and players the band is. A different thing than what you would expect from Sabbath, but very good. The closer continues with the same attitude. Interesting guitar sounds there. Sums a up a very impressive debut project. 4.3

Really really enjoyed!

8/10 So we have established that before the Ozzy Osbourne comic book character of the 90s, there was an awesome band. I love the riffs, and I love how this had a subtlety and nuance that got lost in much of the genre that Heavy Metal became. Wonderful

Title song and N.I.B are 10/10 tracks. First half of the album is outstanding, the B side just isn’t as solid though, with Evil Woman and Sleeping Village probably being a 1-2 of the weakest songs on the album. Still, can’t ignore the brilliant, ominous, deeply occult aura of this album. I’m sure parent groups must’ve hated this on release back in the 70s! Feels very ahead of its time. There’s a harmonica solo, THEN a bass solo. Incredible really. Favourite Song: N.I.B Worst Song: Evil Woman, Don’t Play Your Games With Me

SICK GUITAR!

rip ozzy

it was nice

Bluesy Zeppelin riffs with enough Satan to freak out the squares.

Legendary, but not so good for me

I was never a huge fan of Ozzy Osbourne's voice but it fits the atmosphere that this album is trying to get across. I enjoyed it. Not really any lows but it's also missing the highs that would make this a great album. Favorite Track: The Wizard I tend to give this a 3. But I factor in the impact that this album had when it was first released so I'm giving it a 4 - just barely.

muito diferente do que eu imaginava!

Kietai

3.5 agréablement surprise

Ahead of its time, simple texts and extensive guitar solos; Ozzy's recognisable vocal with a hint of sadness in his voice, as always :) Definitely an album worth to be on this list 🦇

A classic album that ushered metal as we know it. I didn't used to have much of a taste for the genre but in the last 5 years it grew on me with exposure. The genre pushing sounds of this album are still fun today and no one does dark better than the prince of darkness himself. RIP Ozzy

Didn’t really liked first few songs, but other seem better to me

Where metal began. I'll be honest, I was not much into metal, or Sabbath, growing up. I came to Ozzy late, when he had become a human cartoon character. Now that I'm older, and going back to hear where it all started, I finally get it.

Cool. Stand-outs - Behind the Wall of Sleep - N.I.B.

OK I fully get this The shredding is insane on this. Just the right level of boisterous without being too navel gazeY. Ozzy is brilliant and oozes cult leader. Also this album is funky as fuck, some killer baselines

Quite disturbing, but that's the whole point right ?

Solid original heavy rock

Enjoyable but metal isn't my favorite genre of music. The riffs are good and it's held up well over time. 8/10

i mean it’s good, but compared to ‘paranoid’ it’s much more…. shallow?

I’m not a huge Black Sabbath fan, but there’s no denying that this was groundbreaking stuff for its time. Although metal nowadays is so heavy that it completely eclipses the sound of this album, the songs here are still heavy at times, and they totally hold up as classic rock tunes. That makes this still a worthwhile listen, and a pretty enjoyable one at that.

Good but fees more standard rock then their other sounds

grand guitars very clear drums

This and Paranoid were on permanent rotation on my dads record player. I was shocked at how many songs I recognized or at least got a familiar melody out of. Its weird space alien rock, beginnings of heavy metal. Smoke up, turn on the black light and melt into the music.

Some classic heavy metal. Songs about Hell and wizards. Good stuff

Not quite as great as their albums, but still very good 4.5*

sick album 8/10

Pretty good ngl

> the Beatles

Black Sabbath rocks. The bass is surprisingly funky and really good on this record.

Great album

Great debut album. Can’t believe I have never listened to it before! Much more reminiscent of Cream than Led Zeppelin for me.

Way groovier than expected

Eher lower four stars, aber macht schon Spaß. Wie LED Zeppelin ohne Glam

8/10 Best songs: ??? Not the "heavy metal" I was expecting, but I am pleased with what I got. The music is far and away the strongest part of the album. The vocals aren't very good, and the lyrics are honestly really lame, but the musicality of the album (almost?) makes up for it. Interestingly, I've kind of had difficulty identifying a "best song" - not sure why. The songs are all pretty strong, none are offensive to the ear, so why can't I pick out one or two that stand out?

Idk where my notes go but u liked this album great for tripping or meditating

This sounds pretty tame by modern standards but it is clear how transformational it was. RIP Ozzy.

Not my favorite Sabbath album, that would probably be Master of Reality, but the debut is undeniably good. Ozzy's vocals and theatrics are so good on this.

pretty good

even this album released in 1970, the sound still feel modern and relevant in today's date. can't even imagine the people's reaction when this album first release to the world

Best Track - "The Wizard"

This album was my first excursion into heavy metal.

pretty good, i enjoyed it overall :)

Very good album

E assim nasceu o heavy metal 🖤

Not my thing, but it is enjoyable nonetheless

Solid I can see the relevancy into heavy metal development, and Wicked- Simran

When I saw this album was "5" songs and almost 40 minutes, I thought wtf. But 5 tracks is a misleading number as there are actually 10 songs. Going into this album, I was more familiar with Ozzy's solo work so I was expecting similar vocals and some hard hitting guitar riffs. Boy was I mistaken. His vocal performance was more subdued and he picked the moments where he would go for it and let his voice shine. There were also some surprises on this album sonically like the harmonica in one of the songs. But overall it is hard hitting guitar riffs, with some beautiful guitar and drum solos and there is a lot of space on this album for the instruments to really shine. There were several moments where there were no vocals and the focus is the instrumental. I thoroughly enjoyed this album.
