One of my favs

among gods greatest gifts

don't forget to listen to the b-sides

Hot damn mess is the best way. Obviously a 5 star album. Incendiary guitar and funky ass bass. Good shit.

Yeah, I know half the lyrics of this record. And they're not usually that profound - but the rotation it earns is heavy enough that I can't help it!

I hadn't listened to this album the whole way through in a while, but today it sounded so good, particularly compared to their last two albums since Frusciantes return. This album made those two albums sounds so much worse, in Cali you have a Frusciante who is close to the top of his game, whereas now, its just not the same. The first side of this album is ridiculous in terms of bangers. Get on Top is the only song on the first side that isn't of the level, but its still good. The opener is incredible, Parallel Universe is a great song with a bass/lead combo that sounds so different that the rest of the album, Scar Tissue is a classic, Otherside is a classic, Californation (although not as good as the other singles) is great, Easily is probably the best non single track. Then the second half is great, the songs aren't as famous, but there are still great songs on it. Velvet Glove is probably the highlight of the second half and Road Trippin is a beautiful ending. I've soured on the band generally, and this album is probably their 3rd best after By the Way and Blood Sugar, but it's a classic. I am going to have to say 5.

pause this si amazin wait this is one of the best albums i've ever listened to in my entire life oh my god

Yksi kaikkien aikojen eniten läpisoitettu levy meikäläisen historiassa. Ennen tätä levyä olin jo jotain bändistä kuullut, mutta Woodstock esiintyminen (varsinkin Right on Time) ja tämän levyn julkaisu avasi oman sydämen näille herroille. Ehkä tästäkin levystä olisi varaa heivata pari biisiä pois parantaakseen kokonaisuutta, mutta aito timantti myös näin.

Tätä on usein tykitetty. Yksi kovimmista RHCP-levyistä

Amazing album. Almost every song is great. 5

this album is full of nostalgia for me. porcelain is one of the most heartbreaking songs i've ever listened to.

Great stuff

Who doesn't love the stuff that was popular when they were in high school? RHCP are funky and the music sounds so nice. I knew this album coming in and I still really enjoy it, particularly Scar Tissue, I Like Dirt, and Savior. It's a boppin ride the whole way through, though the production value is actually not that great. Still loved it.

Sooo viele Erinnerungen

Classic

Great album with lots of amazing songs on it. Not quite as good as by the way or stadium arcadium but solid nonetheless

John Frusciante is good at guitar.

Deeaam.

Solid album!

Amazing 🤩

first time listening to this album in full, good vibes start to finish. get on top is a terrible song though

Amazing! They have such a unique sound, loved to listen to this album again after a long time. Favourite songs: - Otherside - Californication - Road trippin - Fat dance

This is the first Chili Peppers album I’ve listened to cover to cover, and I’ve gotta say I loved it. It’s great driving music but they’re all bangers too

The cynical view is that the Chilis said "Hey! We had a huge hit with Under the Bridge! Let's do more songs like that!" resulting in Scar Tissue, Otherside, Californication, Savior, Road Tripping, and The Velvet Glove (less so this last one). The less cynical view is that the Chilis were growing up with this album. Whichever view you take, these are all good songs, even if light on the funk that made the RHCP great. Plenty of great rockers on the album too: Around the World (great opening), Parallel Universe, Get on Top, Easily, Emit Remmus, Purple Stain (love the dirty bass line in this track, but the lyrics are a little ugh). Overall, it's a really good album and the lyrics are a lot more mature than their earlier albums (or at least more subtle?). The only "strike" against the album might be they've gotten too mellow, but even songs like Porcelain (as mellow as it gets) are good. It probably helps that I don't hate Anthony Kiedis's singing voice like many others. I'd call it a 4.5, but I'll round it up because there's really not a weak song on the album (maybe I Like Dirt is the closest to a pure throwaway, but it's not bad).

awesomeness. Scar tissue & around the world

A true masterpiece, no other words needed.

Short story: Dad nicknamed me Flea as a kid because I point blanked refused to wear a top in the house for ages.

Quite easy - cool album. Very nice -> 5 stars

I always live a song by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. This album is good to listen too!

Fantastic album! An all time great, 5 stars all day.

Great album, very nostalgic

Finally real music, just astounding stuff, this really does belong on a list of must listen music.

Scar tissue that I wish you saw Sarcastic mister know-it-all Close your eyes and I'll kiss you, 'cause With the birds I'll share With the birds I'll share this lonely viewin' Push me up against the wall Young Kentucky girl in a push-up bra Fallin' all over myself To lick your heart and taste your health 'cause With the birds I'll share this lonely viewin' Blood loss in a bathroom stall A southern girl with a scarlet drawl I wave goodbye to ma and pa 'Cause with the birds I'll share With the birds I'll share this lonely viewin' Fire. 5/5

Wow! Never listen to this and 25 years later it is fresh and fun! Great album!

I really tried to give this less than 5 stars but... I just enjoyed listening to this so much

Every track from the start until Californication is a banger single. Flea is a great bassist. End of the album is lack luster.

I've always been a fan of RHCP. They have funky music with whimsical lyrics. This album is very different than a lot of the rock music they put out but they are a band that really adapts to their era. They don't stay stagnant. This album is more musical, and has a long story to tell about California life, in general. Love Love Love. I don't mind being the oddball out, here.

More than a four but not a 5 . Rating up though

Can’t hear this without thinking of Out R Inn’s back patio.

This album is magnificent, granted my RHCP bias shines bright in favor of it. This album is melodically gorgeous, not a gimmick, and really well put together structurally. However, its compression and volume issue as a result of the "loudness war" of the late 90's has made this album sound beyond fucked up. Even beautiful tunes like Porcelain sounds like udder crap because of this.

Yeah! This is my jam. I wore this CD out in high school. I still consider it “new” RHCP, but that’s just showing my age. Not a bad song on this album and one I come back to time and time again.

My second favorite RHCP album.

one of my fave album!!!!

Me ha encantado

Awesome album!

Probably their best album

The songs on this album are big nostalgia from my teen years. I love it! That being said - it's been a while since I listened to the whole album all at once, and I didn't realize how... samey it sounds? Like it sounds like maybe two really long songs. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I actually am finding I wasn't necessarily blown away by the album as a whole. Still a great listen though, and it made me remember what it was like to be a kid and wish I was a hacker.

Great tunes from the Chil Pepps!

A lot of my favorite RHCP songs on this album. Not nearly as funky as ones before but extremely enjoyable rock nonetheless. Original as any of their albums. Great listen for me always.

All time intro riff to start this thang. Great basslines throughout. One of my favorite bands and oldest known albums so some decent bias here. There's a mix of really raw sound and polished sound in this album that I have never really paid attention to before this listen. I can understand why people don't like RHCP/Anthony Kiedis in particular, but I do. I like dirt.

Oh baby we have some heaters the past few days! Not gonna go too far in depth about this album cuz I’m sure we’ve all heard it tons of times. I know this album gets a lot of flack for its production but it doesn’t really bother me, because the worst song on this album (Porcelain) still sounds solid and is a good switch up from the loudness of the rest. I still like BSSM, BTW, and SA more than this but it's hard not to give it a 5 still. 4.5 and rounding up.

I haven't listened to this in such a long time but i forgot what i high point it was - a glorious return. I get the feeling it's a true "the best 15 of the 40 we demoed" which gives it strength that later (imo) bloated albums don't have.

lots of hits. pretty good album

This album is a masterpiece - maybe more than the hit-after-hit first half, I love the second part of the album that includes “Savior”, “Road Trippin” and “Porcelain.”

en verda discazo sisisi ase tikitiki tiki tiki tabe

My favourite Chilipeppers record, and to me the sound of the summer I was 17, which is the sound of going to the beach and on boat trips with good friends. One of the few records were every song could be a single( and many of them were!). Yes, the lyrics are more than a tad stupid, yes the production lacks depth, but this one gets an extra star based on pure nostalgia.

I'll admit it I love me some Chili's!! This was my favorite album until they released Stadium Arcadium, but only because SA was a double LP. Standout tracks are Scar Tissue, Otherside, Californication, Savior & Road tripping.

Aright!! Some RHCP! Omg this whole time I've been sayin "with the blood that's shed" on Scar Tissue, instead of "with the birds I'll share" Had the lyrics pulled up and noticed that. Lots of hits on this album. I hadn't ever heard the album all the way through I don't think. I really liked Porcelain. Road Trippin' caught my attention as well. Great album! 5 stars

Great album. Favs: 1.Porcelain 2.This velvet glove 3.Parallel Universe Mention: Otherside/ Around the world

Ding ding dong dong ding ding dong dong ding DING

I forgot how incredibly good this album was! Banger after banger

Poets they are not, but I love the RHCP!

Absolutely love this. Brings back a lot young child of memories. Deffo going to be listening to this again soon.

Dream Music in the 1999iger Jahren. The Song "Californication" was my favorite.

I listened to this album firstly at 5:45am It made no sense. Again at 1:27pm. Wasn’t feeling it. Started playing a power wash simulator at 4:57pm with this album on in high definition headphones? Finally made sense.

Love this Album. The first time I've listend to it was around 1999 and I loved it on the spot. Although then and now I prefer electronic music. However, great album!

They are awful people (beside my boy Dave Navarro- before this album) but I really love their music. 9/10

The biggest commercial success album for RHCP. Not my favorite but still amazing from the group, I prefer the weirder sounding stuff and this album was popular because they toned it down and were more rhythmic. Keides does some of his better work here and Frusciante, Chad, and Flea are top 10 in their respective instruments all time. Back half of the album as some okay songs but front half is amazing. 9/10

Anthony Keidis says words funny. Probably the most popular RHCP album with the most well known tracks. As a teen this was on HARD repeat, so I know every song on this album basically mispronounced word for mispronounced word. As an adult I kind of dropped off of RHCP and really don’t listen to them very much anymore. Nevertheless it’s impossible to deny the fantastic sound and flow of this album. 9/10

Can't say more than what other already have. It's a solid 4-5/5 in the first half slowly making its way lower and lower the longer you listen.

So many classic songs

Hell yeah

Top top top

I might not have been thrilled with the whole long Blood Sugar Sex Magik album, but this one thrilled me beginning to end. Red Hot indeed.

I do enjoy the funky rock sound of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I was concerned that I might be disappointed with another album, but I was not. I mean, this one grabbed me from the start and then kind of slowed down. But there was definitely enough there to keep me until the very end.

Funky and fun. Benefits from under exposure for me --- I've not listened to this one before so it feels "fresh" relative to Blood Sugar...

When I heard The Red Hot Chili Peppers hits off this album back when it was released they were ok but for some reason didn’t draw me in. Today I’m left scratching my head because this album is awesome! I loved the whole album and am now a belated RHCP fan!

Classic chili peps

GREATNESS

Really good - a few filler songs away from being a perfect album

MUCH better than I expected. Really enjoyed this one, maybe even more than BSSM

bangger

Hard to believe this album is almost 25 years old. I remember getting it as a birthday present when I was 8 and my parents immediately taking it away to hold onto until I was older.

Amazing Album. John Frusciante is crazy.

Fantastic album. Brings back great memories of college. I remember this being the RHCP renaissance from the early 90s and John Frusciante's return. A lot of classics on here. I did enjoy the Dave Navarro years, but John is CRUCIAL PIECE OF THE RHCP SOUND. No doubt about it.

So many songs I recognized, great :)

Already know this whole album and is in my top list 🤣🤣

Fun album, Pop Rave.

Love this .. great classic

Listened to this high while hiking in the mountain by my house it was so good and pretty topical and i actually loved it sm, didnt know how familiar i was with this band i knew ive heard them before but didnt know what songs they made specifically. Loooovedddd ittttt

This album to me is like the perfect symbolism of a road trip. There's no worries, you're just enjoying the ride, which I guess is why the last song is such a great closer to this album. Really great along with some new songs I never knew after giving this album a full listen through. However, I like dirt can stay in the dirt, its the only one that gave me a bad taste, but we'll call it a small road bump.

Jaunty

Epic. But I am biased due to nostalgia here. Favorite track: Emit Remmus

I loved this at the time, which may be clouding my judgement slightly! Some songs have aged poorly (or were never that good) but the opening salvo is up there with the very best. I love the Chilis, and this and the follow up (by the way) are are my favourites of their albums. It was always likely to get full marks, but listening again confirmed it for me.

Great album, long time favourite. Loved it Funky bass and soulful sounds.

Such a fantastic album. It has it's own not so great points, but even those parts of the album are still fun. It's crazy that I've never owned this album, yet I still knew every song on it.

Awesome album

Easily my favorite album to listen to growing up as a kid, I’ve spent hours listening to most of these songs. Not only one of my favorite albums covers but my favorite songs from the Red Hot Chili Peppers are on here. Looking back there are some songs on here I have to give another chance. Yes, some can get over played but you can’t hate on these amazing songs. The best are road trippin, otherside, and californication.

Scar tissue e porcelain 💚

californication is good, Easily and Get on Top, Parallel Universe , Road Trippin probably more good ones l

Amaxing

Another great album on my daily list. Picture an idyllic beach area with a skatepark at the side for afternoon skating, the beach for a relaxed and cool early evening late summer bbq next to beach bonfires, and then a funfair after that and finally cruising the highways and beach-sides in a very cool open topped car. This image perfectly describes the album. Wonderful.

Really thought this would be a five star, but the second half of the album really just drops off in quality. But the first half is sooooo good, so actually, my first thoughts were right.

AMAZING!

I like all songs, because I find passage of the song very clean and memorable. Finally, the album is very good

I gotta admit it, I dismissed this album as an unfairly popular one when it came out. I had loved *Blood Sugar Sex Magic* a few years before, but I had gone on to other genres in 1999. And what I heard from Red Hot Chili Peppers in that year didn't seem aimed at me anymore. Now, almost 24 years later, I know that it was me who had changed, not the band. And I know I was wrong to dismiss this LP. The first side is one of the most mind-blowing collection of hits that had ever graced a rock album. And the second side is not bad either. You can still hear songs from this album in many "rock revival" radio stations today. Once again, this could lead a listener to have a bad opinion of *Californication*. But the reviewers claiming that this LP didn't age well don't know anything about young folks in 2023. My 17-year old stepson doesn't buy *everything* from that rock revival thing (mostly aimed at the generation of his parents). But he bought this album. Like, he literally bought it. It was the first vinyl he ever paid money for, and the first one he owned--even before he had anything to play the record on. And he's gonna remember that for the rest of his days. Not so bad for a first buy, eh? Under that light how can I not give five stars to this record? Beyond my little personal anecdote, it seems obvious that if you select at least two RHCP albums in a list of essential albums, you need this one and *Blood Sugar Sex Magic*, enough said. Everything else that Anthony Kiedis, Flea and company released is probably less relevant than those two records--even though *One Hot Minute* has also grown on me a little with the years. But I guess that's a story for another day, kiddies. In the meantime... Number of albums left to review: 423 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 266 (including this one) Albums from the list might* include in mine later on: 141 Albums from the list I won't include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 175

"Around the World" kicks off the album hard. Great opener. I would love to see a remix/remaster of this album, because it's peak "loudness wars" - just very little dynamic range, even though there's opportunities for it in the songwriting. Just a killer album though, everyone on top of their game. Chad Smith can hold down a groove.

i thought it was quite good, not at all what i expected from RHCP

love the rock and party vibe sounds like something i would listen to anyways so i loved it

god damnit i like the chili peppers

Here is the thing about RHCP. We say there is many great bands or artists, that other, newer artists try to base their music on. But with RHCP, it's not the thing. They are incredibly hard to imitate in any way. They are pretty much the only big group playing funk rock in 21st century. Yeah, also the album is fine.

Great album

Californication- One of my favorite openings of an album with the distorted bass thing into that cool guitar line in the verse. I’ve listened to this album so much in middle school so it’s hard to listen objectively. Really nice to revist an old favorite. I feel like maybe 80 percent holds up pretty well and it’s the same 80 percent that I liked as a kid. Some of their best music and last good album. Kind of a new sound for RHCP with frusciantes return. He adds a lot melodically to the songwriting and I like his vocals. Velvet Glove was my favorite this time around. Flea and frusciante have a special thing together and I love chad smiths playing too. So many things I love about this album and also things I dislike. The title track is the worst. And I don’t really like Easily. Kinda conflicted feeling but I guess I have to give it a

Yeah, you know you'd like this full album.

I remember buying this on my way to work when it came out, full of hits. It was played a lot and still holds up, one of their best.

their best album fo sho

Nice summer vibes, it's great, but not more great than bssm

Fantastic Classic Jams!

A few fillers and repetitive songs, as is typical for RHCP imo, but overall just a great album

5 punkte

Any album with the Flea/Frusciante duo is an obvious 5/5. Would be 6/5 had Quixoticelixer been kept on

For the nostalgia (and the singles)

Classic

Because of when I was born, it has to be a five star review. A seminal album from my youth. Only skippable track was 'Porcelain' and it's actually beautiful when I listen 20+ years later.

One of my car CDs. Nothing beats shouting out the words as you're speeding down the motorway. Incredibly strong start, Around the World, Scar Tissue, Otherside, Californication, and Easily are fantastic, and I have great memories of listening to them when younger to bolster the car memories. Most recently, I'd just landed from Singapore via Helsinki, it was 10pm, I was sleep deprived and confused, and was frankly worried about driving the 1 hour 30 back to my home. Popped this on, and tore up the road. No crashes. If I'm being really critical, the second half of the album is a bit weak (I don't like Porcelain, I Like Dirt or Emit Remmus). There are passable songs on in between that depending on my mood I'll skip, but Road Trippin' is a great alternative way to end. I like the progression from proper funk (back with Blood Sugar Sex Magik) to the funk-inspired rock of this album.

I would've called RHCP my favourite band for quite a long time around when this was released. This album was my first exposure to them. I remember my parents having this album and finding it weird that it was popular amongst my friends too... I was a bit of a RHCP hipster and my favourite album flipped between blood sugar sex magik and one hot minute. I think both of them are better than this. This album is the point that they became a globally huge band, and imo, after this their music started going downhill by appealing to a wider audience. However, this album is still great, and having not heard it for years, was much better than I was expecting. You can still hear the funkiness of their original sound (flea is quality), but also the more poppy sounds creeping in. Have to give it a 5, even though they have better albums, too many good tracks not to. Highlights: Scar tissue Otherside Get on top Californication Right on time Road trippin

A classic.

I love this album front to back.

I forgot how good they are!! Wish they were on the radio more

This album... unreal! So good from start to finish.

I’m going to marry the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Always a good album

A straight banger. No song that is bad.

first vinyl I ever bought, after hotel california. I think I have a certain love for california and LA music. This album is just truly one of the greatest ever. lyrically especially the title track, but just overall a great album with deep meaning behind every line. makes me think about watching clueless and stuff. but never heard what they were singing in purple stain. not sure if I should be disgusted or kinda turned on?

Great album! Definitely a must-listen.

After Blood Sex Sugar Magic I wasn't expecting much, knew there would be some standout highlights, but they really impressed me. Much less of trying to force a rap career and elevated musicality. The whole album hit right.

Discazo

Absolutely love this album Amazing songwriting and creativity and skips in the entire album Rhcp have to be in my top 10 bands of all time And rhcp as a band are amazing

great comeback.

Classic/10

Just about flawless. One of the great records.

I can't decide what to do with this album. On one hand, some of the songs are honestly amazing, instant partystarters, great guitar solos by Frusciante, amazing bass lines and style by Flea, and sometimes good vocal by Kiedis (I'm not really a fan of his singing voice, but one have to say, he fits into this band perfectly). And just like that, some songs from this album are all time great, instantly recognised by everyone, for all the right reasons. And finally, on the other hand, the album was so successful, that those songs are incredibly overplayed literally everywhere, that when I listened to the album, I found myself slowly drifting away, paying no attention to it. And furthermore, side b of the album is, at best, average. There is not even a one song that caught my attention. I think my rating in this case should reflect both my first and last impression, although the first contact with Californication was so extraordinary, I would feel bad giving it anything else than 5 stars.

esse é top

Was fun listening to this after many years. Very front heavy with the singles, was fun to listen to the second half.

A phenomenal album, the best album the Chili Peppers crafted. Beautiful singing by Kiedis on Californication and Scar Tissue, a banging intro in Around the World. Funkiness personified on Purple Stain. And despite all of it, I still can’t stand Porcelain. But that’s how great the rest of the album is. That one song doesn’t break it’s magic

Great album from the peps, first one back with John F, first half legendary

One of RHCP's best albums with their best lineup. They got some songs like "Get on top" that are still old school funky Chili Peppers but most of them is their "new" style which I very much prefer. The only two problems I have with the album is that the first half is much better than the second and that the mixing could be better. Rick Rubin, the producer, have done a lot of great work but his part in the loudness war is not one of them. Nonetheless it's still a fantastic album.

I still remember the day this album came out.

I've listened to this album a million times and I still love it. That's a 5 star from me, Dog.

There is a bit of a dip in the 3rd quarter of the album, but the rest of it is so, so good. Awesome instrumentals, fun lyrics, great balance between the two. RHCP are usually let down by their non-singles on their albums, but most of them carry their weight here. My favorite RHCP track overall is Otherside, so the other favorite non-single on this album is Parallel Universe

Classic.

So many classic songs. This formula worked so well that they re-recorded this album several more times.

Talk about right on time. When the world needed Red Hot Chili Peppers the most, they came through with what was perhaps one of the more awe-inspiring comebacks in rock. Seemingly having drifted through the wayside after John Frusciante's first departure and the admirably bizarre One Hot Minute (with Dave Navarro in tow), Flea, Anthony Kiedis and Chad Smith knew that they needed to refresh and regroup and that they had to do it with Frusciante, who was coming off a hellacious heroin addiction and regained his passion for playing music. The result was this album. The Chilis occupy a strange place for me, being a gateway for whatever musical taste I had developed but being completely left behind as a result. With that being said, this album is fantastic. Sure, Kiedis may be grating at times in regards to his lyrical masterworks but, when he delves into mature introspection, he is lifted up to the same stratosphere that his band occupies and that alchemy is the reason why they are highly regarded together. Regardless of how one feels about them, when Californication grabs you, it just grabs you and startles with one headbangingly mellow surprise after another. It sure did with me. Quite possibly their finest hour.

Un super classique des red hot. 5

Dream of it

Once you realise that Scar Tissue is a perfect song then everything else falls into place. Frusciante's solo is one of the greatest by anyone. Ever. Get On Top is a classic Chili's breakdown that is sandwiched amongst famous, much more mellow, songs. That makes it even more fun while also setting the scene for the title track's anthemic grandeur. Right On Top is just insane then we go to the sweetness of Road Trippin'. Not many bands can get away with that but RHCP do it with ease.

That Bass + the different vibes are amazing (other side, scar tissue…)

Always having respected the Chili Peppers while never having been a fan in particular, this album was a real surprise. There is no bad song on here - not a single one. While the first three or four songs are outstanding (especially Parallel Universe) and the rest cant't quite live up to them, all of them are at least solid. Not once hat I the urge to fast forward to skip to the next track. The songs have quite a bit more melody than previous efforts of the band, Flea's bass sound is out of this world, and the songs are an intriguing mix of rock, funk and pop. Not iconic, but very close. 4.5/5

🔥🔥🔥

I challenge the 1001 Albums website to add a sixth star with this album. Californication was one of the defining albums to a 14 year old Curtis Tonks...and its legacy lives on. Even my kids know several songs from this one.

I've loved RHCP for a long time and this is one of my favourites. All around great album

Top 25 album of all time

I'm glad I granted this a second listen. At first, it sounded a bit too mainstream to me, but half-way in I started to get into it more. With the second listen, the great musicianship come through, especially the bass and drums (that snare...). I think I still prefer Blood Sugar Sex Magic, but this album turned out to be very, very good.

This album is so good It's just Red Hot Chilli Peppers, there's no genre in it, however the album is long and some songs are not that good

Nothing much to say.

This album could do without "Savior" and "Purple Stain", but they don't stop this from being a 5/5 album.

Not my favorite RHCP album (probably stadium Arcadium) but an easy 5. This contains banger after banger and honestly sounds like it could have come out any year between its release in 2000 and today. I just listened ti an interview with John Frusciante who said that on this album he tried to create more space in his guitar playing and you can hear that in the dominance of Flea’s bass throughout.

Probably the best RHCP album

Perfection

This is such an iconic album from the late 90s. I felt like it was everywhere for several years - but yet again, I don't think I ever sat down and actually listened to the whole record. It's good - real good. This is entering my normal rotation for sure.

Pretty amazing! Another album with songs I always liked but never was compelled to listen to the whole album. Very glad I did!

So many good songs on this album

Solid album, one of their best

Großartiges Album!

the quality was definitely there some parts were a bit cringey but I consistently enjoyed the grand majority of it 9/10

Nostalgia

Crystal clear 5/5, something a little less than the other album with 5 but some songs are too good

One of my first rock albums

Easy 5

This was an outstanding experience. This is exactly like I remember RHCP in my teenage years. Even though some songs could be better, the emotion here is responsible for my five-star rating.

10/03/2022 9am, currently listening. Read some of the reviews and didn’t realize how many people hate rhcp and Anthony kiedis 💀💀💀💀 it’s like…fru, flea, and chad are all goats and Anthony is just kinda bopping around… doesn’t know which way is up…. KDKDJD Love this album so much, reminds me so much of high school. Lots of happy memories associated with this album, so of course every song is a bop for me. People in the reviews seem to have a problem with Anthony's contributions the most, which makes me sad bc the time spent airing grievances about Anthony could instead be spent praising and celebrating all the musicians instead. I digress... -- 5pm, feeling the end of the day slumpies rn, but so far it has actually been a pretty good day! Two of my studio mates brought me cookies for my birthday, and tomorrow I am going to a cool art hangout that Kiyana invited me to. Hopefully it will be fun and a good way to spend my birthday. I miss Lukey a lot a lot, but knowing I get to see him again sometime soon makes me really happy. I never knew love could feel the way it does until I met him.

One of the best albums of the late 90’s.

Love this album

Amazing album. Flea really stood out to me in a way I had not fully appreciated before, that guy fucking shreds a base.

Otherside, scar tissue, californication...5!

Perfect album.

So good!

NO WAY I MISSED THIS LISTENING RN

Perfeição! Um dos melhores álbuns ever! Só música boa! Melhores músicas: Scar Tissue, Otherside, Californication, Porcelain, Around the World, This velvet glove e Road Trippin'.

Amazing album listened to many times

Classic RHCP

Fantastic album!

Classic Album, loved it since I was a kid. No more info needed.

Quite a dreamy album. Can definitely hear those 60s/70s California vibes coming through. Powered by those bass and drums, ties it all together.

So many great songs on this album. Parallel Universe is probably my favorite. I guess in a different world everybody sleeps on a really large bed (California King)?

Excelente,de los mejores discos que escuché.

A classic. Full of tunes that have stuck around for almost 20 years

Great tunes, such a classic album that you know every word to.

Great return to form with the pivotal return and influence of John Frusciante being no coincidence in making this their greatest album to date. Full of recognisable tracks that combine to make one of the greatest albums of all time in my opinion

This album sounds like my adolescence. Funny, because I think it marks the end of the bands adolescence.

What a wonderful album! Haven't heard RHCP in a while, so this was fun. Fave tracks are the title track, "Porcelain," "Scar Tissue," "Purple Stain," "Savior," and "Road Trippin'".

RHCP is an awesome band whose songs I listen to regularly. While sometimes their songs cover some heavy topics, I enjoy the easy to listen, chill sound that they have cultivated over the years. Reminds me of the good times of summer. Multiple huge hits on this album although towards the end I am less familiar with some of those songs, they were still great songs on their own.

amazing!

Obviously 5

Some absolutely brilliant songs on here.

RHCP’s 1999 mega-hit opens with proof of their growth and immediately shows why it was their biggest album. “Around the World” merges funk and spoken word with big choruses and back-up vocal harmonies. Then the Flea bassline drives “Parallel Universe” and melodic John Frusicante riffs reminiscent of “Under the Bridge” and “Breaking the Girl” carry “Scar Tissue” - it all begins to suggest a maturity you didn’t think the Chili Peppers were capable of. And again there on “Scar Tissue” (and others) with the back-up harmonies! I didn’t think this album would hold up as well as it does. I don’t know if Anthony Keidis ever really grew up, but only 8 years after “Blood Sugar Sex Magic,” it certainly sounded like he had. I explored the divergent paths of RHCP and Pearl Jam in my previous Peppers review, and it’s worth returning to here. Both bands were raw and unrestrained in their 1991 star-making offerings. By 1999 both were more mature and their music more refined and restrained. I love the way both of their sounds evolved. But while “Californication” and “Yield” both held plenty of commercial hit potential, it was no longer something that Pearl Jam pursued. Meanwhile, Keidis and RHCP reveled in it, and as a result have had longer lasting stardom and popularity (even if Pearl Jam has been more consistent in the past two decades).

This is probably my most played album of all time. My brother had got this CD in 1999 when Scar Tissue hit. This album had TV commercials that aired to hype its release. The next summer in 2000 we basically had this on repeat on our portable Panasonic CD player. I personally can’t rate this album lower than 5 stars. It has so many songs that I’ve heard thousands of times and I still put on playlists to this day. Otherside is among my favourite songs of all time. I knew in the 2000s this album lost it towards the end. Listening how this one way too long. They could have cut out most of the songs after Easily could have been cut out.

I still think of this as a 'new' RHCP album... but I now realise it is old, and a classic. Perhaps their best.

Dream of Californication, more like Viva Californication There's really not a lot to say here, this is RHCP - you know them, you heard them, they do one thing and you already have an opinion on it. Californication clocks at under an hour, and even then it starts to drag its feet, and you start to feel like you've been listening to the same song for too long. The thing is I really, really love that song. And credit wher it's due, there are songs like Get on Top to pick up the pace and Porcelain to slow it down, so the listening experience is actually decently varied, and coupled with how simply fun it is to drift away in the sound and listen to the distinct vocals, I really cannot find it in me to focus on the flaws. Otherside and Californication are absolute classics and the obvious standouts of the album.

Modern classic

AWESOME FODÃO LEGALZAÇO

A seminal album for the Chilis, marking a level of maturity to their sound. Flea's funky bass line decorate chugging rock riffs whilst Antony Kiedis' sometimes abstract lyrical stylings meander across the top. Top stuff.

-"Around The World" and "Parallel Universe" get kinda heavy at the end -"Purple Stain" is quite catchy, the stutter-style lyrics really grab your attention -"Right on Time" is a cool alternation of slow-style lyrics and blazing-fast lyrics. The bass is flying with a cool bassline through the whole thing. -"Get on Top," "Emit Remmus," "I Like Dirt," "Purple Stain" and "Right on Time" are all stand out songs -Great album, all the songs are interesting and most are very good. 5 stars!

Californiuh

RHCP is a polarizing band, they are all over the place and have a massive repertoire of singles that you'll hear on the radio. Haven't listened to this album through but it is absolutely stacked with hits, and they're all solid. The guitarist John Frusciante has a history in and out of the band, this is his first album back after a long hiatus, and this summer (2022) he's returning again to the band for a tour. I'm seeing them live for the first time so excited for that and this album helped me get in the mood. Kiedis is the weakest link, but also the band doesn't work without him. All of the pieces fit together well, and this particular lineup has a great synergy in their instrumentals. This album slaps, the b-sides are mostly good, not great. Porcelain is probably the lowest point in the album, it's kind of whiplash to go into something so slow after nonstop high-energy bangers, and then it's right back to it afterwards.

Noni! Jos kuulisin tän levyn tänään ekaa kertaa sais tää luultavasti arvosanaksi 4/5. Näin ei kuitenkaan ole. Tää on the one and only ensinmäinen levy josta mulla on tarkkoja muistoja ja joka starttas mun kohdalla bändien ja levyjen kuuntelemisen syrjäyttäen yksittäiset radio mafian hittipaskat. 5/5

This album makes me want to Californicate myself into oblivion as much now as it did back then.

Growing up I didn't really listen to RHCP. I liked a few of their singles but didn't branch out and instead dismissed them as that band that can't stop referencing California into their songs. After listening to Californication, I wish I could've looked through that silly assumption and enjoyed the music. This is really good shit. Aside from the California references in at least 3 of their songs, you have plenty of funky basslines and guitar riffs, some sombre acoustic melodies, and chill vibes. There is also no band songs, even the bonus tracks are good. Favourite songs were the title track, Road Trippin, Parallel Universe and Otherside.

Songs: Scar Tissue, Parallel Universe, Other Side, Around the World, Californication, Easily, Road Trippin'

RHCP. Vinilo.

Album espectacular

Probably have to give this 5 stars simply for nostalgia ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What a great band. This is not even their best album.

What can I say, the best grooves in the 90's/00s, the first album i bought when i was just 13yo.

Such a good album! I was getting a little bored towards the end but thats a personal issue and can't fault the album!

08/06/1999 Playful and rhythmic, this bass guitar heavy album feels like the backdrop for a summer day playing beach volleyball on the Pacific or a sweaty dance floor at a rock club. With some of the most catchy tunes every to hit the radio, the diversity of vocal tones and lyrical themes (of resistance and freedom) complete the prescription of joy and release that cause so many embrace the entire album.

Really good. Didn't realize I knew so many of these songs.

This was one in heavy rotation back in the day. The first half is much better, but there’s a lot of variety and energy throughout.

Very nice

This is RHCP at a perfect blend of funky-punky aggro, and softened alternative pop rock sound. It is tight, but still feels full. The only thing I might change is the song order, as many placements of songs in the overall album experience stick out to me.

I’d riot if canonical albums like this weren’t included. One of my favourites and a long-term resident in the tape deck of my Tarago when I was in high school. I can understand people not enjoying all their stuff, but there’s just something about the Peppers. Only downer- a bit too much rhymy stuff in Around the World.

Completely biased rating because FUCK YESSSSSS!! This is the sound of me discovering a musical preference of my own, the sound of being 12 in 1999 and figuring out who I want to be. It is an undeniably groovy and unique album that is a direct line to my younger self.

One of THE albums of the 90s, classic.

What can ye say. Seminal album

❤️but not By The Way

Me like

I liked it. I liked it. I liked it. I liked it.

Something something, California. Don't say I didn't warn ya. Ding-dang-dong-dang-dong California. Just a good examine of Chili Peppers.

I was pleasantly surprised with how much I still enjoyed this album. Loved it as a teen but when I revisited Blood Sugar by RHCP I found it to be a very tough listen. Californication keeps the lame rolling but they balance it out nicely, it’s not laid on thick. The first half of this album especially is pretty great, it could be nostalgia but I don’t know, I think this is still pretty great to return to every once in awhile. 4 stars

Belter of an album. Second half goes a little downhill but brought back up again by Road Trippin.

Difficult one to rate. Strong nostalgia factor, but if I'm being honest the sound is rather tired. Still, Californication is a banger

Probably their best album. Still just a four.

It's the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I've heard this album in my sleep.

I don’t know why I haven’t given RHCP’s a serious listen before. Maybe I’ve heard too many parodies of their sound. They really rock. The bass grooves especially stand out. The lyrics felt like they came from lived experiences of California living including the darker sides of crushed dreams.

more weird al music that isn't funny huh...

The album is ridiculously front loaded with the hits and catchy songs. The second half of the album (anything after “Porcelain”) drags a bit. “Road Trippin” is one of the singles, but it’s a saccharine sweet cringe fest. In fact, on the back nine, “This Velvet Glove” is all that’s worth listening to. Kiedis is a creepy man. He’s arrogant too. A true prima donna. Also, the idea that they associate themselves with California shows how fake the band is because precisely none of them were born there. It’s all so performative. Having said that, some of the better songs are pretty good. I’m feeling positive today, so let’s round that 3.5 up to a 4.

Good album, lead singer kinda stinks a little

Might be a 5 if I hadn’t heard the hits more time than my own voice. It’s also little long - but damn does Fleas bass flow.

Everyones heard this

Good music! I like them more than I realize.

This album is like having your parents buy you an apartment so you can leave home and chase your dreams, without being weighed down by the burden of responsibility. Your father is very wealthy, but as far as parenting goes, he is quite distant. Your mother loves you but sees you as immature. As an attempt to set you on the right path, they buy you a house in Los Angeles so you can grow into an adult and fulfil your life’s ambitions. The problem is you’re still an immature fool. Because all of your bills are covered, you just lounge around doing drugs and playing PlayStation all day. Your friends come around and subtly try to nudge you towards getting a job, but you suggest having a party instead. They want you to grow up, but at the same time your place is great for a house party.

The first half is great. John back with something to prove, Flea his usual self killing it on the bass. But what stands out os Chad's drumming. He really drives the band amd songs like californication would fall flat with anyone else drumming, but he has a way to pick it up. However, thw lyrics throughout are comically bad. This is the guy who wrote under the bridge, so you know he can do better. And the 2nd half was not as good. But when it was good, it was great.

Bellissimo

3.75 / 5

Fuck I wanted this to be a 5 for me. If the album cut off the 2nd half it probably would be. So many bangers to start and it just fell flat at the end. Flea's bass is magical, the singing is so iconic and the riffs are godly. Truly a 4.5 and not a 4 for me. Fave Song: Otherside

No private session used for Spotify. I was actually a resident of California when this album came out, well on the way of being Californiafied. I have this album and have heard it a lot and it's the last RHCP I got into, for reasons that I shouldn't go into for this review. I love this album, its got some great songs that would have to go into the soundtrack of my life, the California years. It's not a no skip album, though, there is some filler.

Amazing 🤩

Gute Abwechslung. Gleichzeitig sehr zugänglich. Liebs.

I too dream of californication

Look, I know. I *know*. I read *Scar Tissue* and I know what Anthony Kiedis admits to in there, and who he admits to it with. If you want to drag him from now until the end of time, go for it. More strictly musically, I know how substandard a lot of people find his voice to be or how quickly his lyrical stylings can wear out their welcome. But am I totally wrong for thinking that Kiedis might actually have something meaningful to say? For thinking that his trademark blend of rock, rap, funk, and whatever the hell else signifies his status as a voice of generations of kids raised by culture in the absence of their actual families - literally, in his case, as the child of a Rainbow Bar hanger-on who sold drugs to the Hollywood Vampires? For thinking that he does as good a job of anyone of communicating the way the admittedly fake hedonism of California, The Idea can function as a crutch for dealing with the very real void inside the self? Hell, part of me even wants to argue that a better class of human than him *couldn't* convey those ideas as effectively, as much as that thought makes me queasy (*see also, e.g.*, Lacey, Jesse). Like, I know it's no excuse but maybe you *have* to have been a desperate, addicted, jailbait-chasing shell of a man in order to write something as existentially raw as "Otherside"; "pour my life into a paper cup" wouldn't matter near as much coming from someone who's only ever seen the line out the door at the methadone clinic as a disinterested passerby. And whatever you think of Kiedis, you gotta admit the rest of this band can fucking *play*. John Frusciante remains able to funk and shred like nobody's business, but some of the more intriguing stuff he does here is more minimalistic, in line with his desperate, intimate 90s solo work - a nice touch that matches Keidis's attempts to go deeper emotionally. And Flea is Flea, one of the most famous bassists ever and deservedly so; the only reason he hasn't been even *more* influential is that his legacy is so intimidating. Ultimately, the biggest problems with this album are more prosaic: the second half isn't as good as the first half, and there's not quite enough sonic or thematic variation to justify including all of these tracks (although the Nineties Overlong Album Disease is a lot more manageable here than on *Blood Sugar*). Nevertheless, if you're listening to it rather than just hating the idea of it (and again, I totally understand why you might hate the idea of it) then you're going to find songs here that speak to you. There's a reason every green 1993 Ford Escort in America had a copy of this album in the center console at one point.

I cannot in good conscience give this a 5 after releasing an awful sounding album after writing some genuinely good songs (Keidis mostly excluded). Got on Top is a fine song but it genuinely sounds bad. I know nowadays the remnants of the loudness war are mostly gone but cmon now. (I started digging into this now again and there's maybe 5 versions out there of Around the World and they all vary quite a bit with seemingly no explanation. The consistency of music through releases always interests me because of the way we stream music now it can change not only between albums but between listens at the whims of whoever hosts it) Anyways, The whole instrumental section of the band are truly on top of their game here. Every time I listen to them I come away with another bassline that I end up playing over and over again in my head. Porcelain is very Smashing Pumpkins and I've never noticed that before. It does feel like a bit of a front loaded album but Road Trippin is a good closer. At the very least it's 4th place to me behind Stadium Arcadium, By The Way, and Blood Sugar (in whatever order). Highlight: Around the World (When Keidis gets rid of a all pretence of good lyrics), but actually the drums in Californication.

Erstes Album dass ich kenne

I slept through most of it honestly but I love other side and scar tissue.

Banger🔥

Every Red Hot Chili Peppers album has like 2-3 great songs and a bunch of filler. Rinse, wash and repeat.

Hard to believe this came out so long ago. I loved the earlier records with John Frusciante, and him coming back for this album felt to me like why it turned out so good. I still prefer Blood Sugar Sex Magik, but this one seemed to make more of splash culturally and the sound is really fantastic. They finish it off with first a VERY strident, high tempo song and then flip to a slower, soothing song. Love it!

so many hits

Fantastic album from the late 90's. This album exposed RHCP to a much broader audience. Ptichfork: 6.2 Rolling Stone: Top 500 Albums #286 Best Songs Around the World Scar Tissue Otherside Californication Porcelain

Unavoidably good, even if the second half lacks the immediacy of the famous singles which the first half throws at you without mercy.

Absolute classic. The first half of this record is fire. The second half drops of a little bit unfortunately. But still so crazy to remember how ridicuclous their band lineup is from an individual musician perspective.

Scar tissue and Otherside giving me such nostalgia cause I would almost hear this song on the radio all the time. I def like their sound and also vocals as well this album.

3.5 relatively good

An excellent classic rock album. This thing was ubiquitous and still slaps so much. Back half of it sort of lets it down, but still has such great heights. To quote Jacob wyzocki, how longs that hog.
