Reviews (page 6 of 15)
This album sounded great as a 19-year old, but with each passing year it seems to lose its shine. Love the bass slapping and funky sounds, but it just feels a bit boring. Scar tissue is still a beautiful song.
Ebin
This was so good but I think a lot of its power was front-loaded. It seemed to lose steam in the second act, which is too bad because it could’ve easily been cut down to a regular-length, 5-star LP. As it is, there’s still a lot of great tracks here.
This was a difficult one for me to listen to without bias. This album really defined my tween years and to this day anytime I think about dirt or doing something easily I hear Anthony Keidis singing from my subconscious. That being said, from the first track the album presents itself as some hardcore shit is about to break out at you. Then Keidis starts rapping. I know it's their schtick, but it takes away from the music for me. I love this album and always will. If it were presented more as an EP, perhaps just with the first 7 tracks, it would be an easy 5 stars. But it's not. I leave it with a 4.
Good album
bass on Get on Top is fire Holy shit Porcelain is such a vibe The Velvet Glove was goated Purple Stain lowk sounds like "my dick so long I'm so long" reel
Very cool but a few duds here and there
RHCP has a special place in my heart because a guy introduced them to me in high school and it was my first real introduction to “rock” which lead me on a decade’s journey catching up on this massive genre as a southern Black girl. 4/5
It helps if you have a good voice snd can sing in tune.
A really solid album full of great hooks and story telling
I understand the arguments about Kiedis’s lyrics, and I kind of agree. The band still works for me, because I can’t imagine what they would sound like with a different front man. The musicianship is unimpeachable. However, there’s a huge dropoff in quality after track 8, making the album almost twice as long as it needs to be. The score reflects that I am probably biased in favor of this album, since it was a big one for me in high school.
A few cracking tracks - Scar tissue, Californication, Road Trippin & Parallel Universe - and a lot of bang average/ poor fillers inbetween. I definitely lean towards the Frusciante influenced tracks rather than more traditional BSSM slap bass funky tracks... Scraps a 4 due to the strength of the above songs.
Their best album. Some great tunes on the album (Scar Tissue, Otherside, Californication) but some filler too, especially the ones sounding like a noisy Level 42.
excellent. love the punk roots.
Hmmm. I really enjoy listening to this album, have to be honest. They're just great musicians and that's on display here. I don't disagree with the criticisms of Keidis' vocals and lyrics. That's really nothing new, and is just part of their sound; the vapidity of it is wearing, though, and it is tedious to listen to a then-nearly 40 year old man continue to make sophomoric and questionable sexual innuendo. But there's a great range of music on this album, and I didn't find it bland nor did I find the non-hits to be filler. Great rock music all the way around. I'd probably give it a 3.5 if I could give half stars.
great
Californication is the when the Chili Peepers became a more sensible and "beatlesque" kind of band. I hear songs like Scar Tissue or parallel Universe and I'm instantly Transported back to that summer. Californiacation and By The Way( the follow up to Californiacation could have easily been a double album.
I thought to myself a few times listening to this album that I really dug the guitar sound. This is much more pop oriented. I thought Kedis' delivery was improved on this one as well. Even though a few of the songs do sound almost like a parody of what you think a RHCP song would sound like, I found myself enjoying this album very much.
This is a great album, lots of nostalgia and I refuse to let any one shame me!!
I had only heard the singles before this. But I found the other songs pretty enjoyable also.
I liked this album when it was first released. I like his voice.
Very much enjoyed this album! rock/funk fusion goodness.
so the Red Hot Chili Peppers are actually good…noted
Oh this is gonna be good (hopefully) Yeah it's really good, fav is quixoticelixer
Hyvä levyhän tää on pitkästä aikaa. 3,75/5.
I won't say it...I won't say Scar Tissue is a bad song...you can't make me. There was a time I was obsessed with this album. I ripped it onto a CD that I eventually wore out from playing in the car too much while delivering pizzas. These days I wouldn't call myself a RHCP fan, but Californication objectively their most cohesive and interesting album, and features each member at their creative peak.
Honestly the only thing that brings this down at times is the vocals, not to say that i dont like them cause i do.and god the lyrics,i like dirt i like dirt i like dirt 8.5
Anything to add? Simply brilliant!
Only a few song didn't hit the mark for me, but it's classic RHCP.
Yes.
what is this man even saying...thank god the music is good
omg i knew a lot of the songs! i remembered really liking them! they had fun music!
Some classics, some funky stuff that I can see why I haven't heard of. All RHCP goodness in the end
There are a couple of filler songs, but largely an excellent RHCP album. It’s got Around the World, Scar Tissue, Otherside, Road Tripping, and the title track (obv). I really love this band
No es su mejor, pero qué hombres
7.5/10 Yeah, the lyrics are cringe (esp if you know a bit more about Kiedis) and RHCP are way too overrated among a certain demographic, but there are just too many bangers on here. Very nice melodies. Highlights: Otherside Road Trippin Scar Tissue Californication Parallel Universe Right on Time
I love this album by RHCP. It's hard to get back into these RHCP-era albums, after knowing the lead singer always had a much younger girlfriend. Definitely one of their best albums. Up there with Blood Sugar Sex Magik
Ya lo he escuchado mas de una vez gracias a mi padre, lo he vuelto a escuchar y me ha encantado como siempre. 8,5/10
Not bad, good n funky. 4/5
Enjoyed this much more than I anticipated.
This is the best output by RHCP. The album came out around the time I was a young and impressionable teen and I connected with these tunes relatively well, given that I was much more into traditional country than the modern rock/pop music of the time. Californication, Scar Tissue and Otherside were all played to buggery on the radio but Road Trippin' was always my favourite.
A tough one to review. The bangers are great, musically there is a lot to love. But Kiedis singing is horrible in most songs. I feel generous today so it's a 4 lol
Good album, enjoyable listen. Probably won’t reach for it again
I think I got served two 5s in a row...dare we make it 3?
more melodic and mature than bssm, my favorite rhcp album. I’m a little peppered out though lol.
Favorites: Get On Top, Road Trippin
A solid rock album. I'm not a fan of all the songs, but it is a worthy listen and has some songs that push the boundaries of rock to the next stage. A little. 4/5
This album is sort of an interesting guilty pleasure for me, which isn't to say I think it's bad or anything, there's just a lot here that could annoy me, and some of it does, but I manage to enjoy this album nonetheless. Honestly, a lot of my complaints center on Anthony Kiedis, which is an extremely common opinion in music spaces. Although, I will say I can't imagine anyone else singing for The Peppers. I actually kind of like his singing, it's a touch melodramatic, but it *is* compelling, and I do like a lot of the melodies here. Although I do *not* love his kind of rap delivery that he gets into, it just sounds goofy as hell. Also, he has a lot of terrible lyrics across this album. There are a few good lines, but wow, when he gets it wrong, he gets it *wrong*. He has all sorts of goofy little -isms in his writing that bug me, but I think the worst example across this album is "Do you smell like a girl when you smile" off of Porcelain, which is otherwise such a tender, sweet song, and this just feels creepy, whether it was supposed to or not. It is also worth noting that even though I am sort of reluctantly willing to put up with Kiedis here, I still do think there's kind of a talent gap between him and the rest of the band. Chad Smith is an incredibly solid drummer here. Flea's slap-bass is iconic and super animated, he is a big reason this album is a space that makes sense for Kiedis, it just kind of works. And, last but not least, the guitarist here is John Frusciante, and I honestly think he's kind of the secret weapon here. He left The Chili Peppers after Blood Sugar Sex Magik, and became increasingly lost to a truly frightening heroin addiction. This was the first album he recorded after getting clean, and he basically had to teach himself how to play guitar again (Note: He also recorded a couple of fascinating solo albums before getting clean, they were lo-fi, intense, and *extremely* sad: I bring them up just because I happen to enjoy them for what they are and I feel that they are chronically overlooked, but explore at your own risk). The result is minimalistic, expressive, almost stylized, and often very sad-sounding playing. He is the sole counter balance to Kiedis' "Hip Bippity Bop California" flows and Flea's kinetic slapping. Without someone like him, I honestly think this would be like drinking a cup of simple syrup, but he adds so much emotional depth and complexity to the themes here through his playing that the album slots together *just right*. The songs here also just work, this was way more consistent than I remember. The first half is pretty much a laundry list of hits. Around The World, Parallel Universe, Scar Tissue, Otherside, and the mighty Californication kind of feel like they should sound overdone and cliched, but when I here these songs, I just like them. They're honestly sort of undeniable. Then the deep cuts in the second half bring everything together. The great songwriting and emotional range on songs like Easily, Porcelain, Emit Rennus, This Velvet Glove, Savior, and Road trippin' just work for me. Even if I'd like to think I'm too cool for The Chili Peppers, the fact of the matter is that this album just rocks. And while I have complaints, I *am* having a great time, so I won't complain.
Otherside is still great. Also like Purple Stain but I’m scared to say that.
Fun classic!
Classic 90's rock. Lots of the RHCP hits are on here, and there's a reason those songs have been played to hell and back. That having been said, they never quite were the top tier of music for me. And the album has quite a lot of filler, too. And I think they have better albums than Californication. Oh and I'm just realising the pun in the name may not be what I always thought it was. I always thought it was California and Vacation, but there's another word that fits with California that seems to fit better... Still, I have enjoyed them a lot over the years. Which means that here we have an album that is hard to rate. An album which I recognise is a good album, and that once I would have said I loved it. But in 2025 I have well and truly outgrown this album, too. But does that mean it's a good album that no longer fits me? Or does it just means it's mediocre? Either way this is probably the most polished album they've produced.
I have never given this album a proper listen as I went off RHCP before this one came out for multiple reasons and have had quite a negative view of them since, plus the obsession with a US state was boring to someone from another country. When I put aside my attitude, I do have to admit this is a good album, though.
Ai. 4/5
Great album, trash mixing, no dynamics tho; lost in the loudness war
Slick peppers with their hogs outin socks
Pretty good album. Production is a little jarring but the songs are there and that’s what’s important.
Banger, had heaps of hits
This is an album of my youth so I went into it already knowing every word. Not listened to it in years and forgot how much I loved it. The earlier stuff they did is a bit shouty and then they suddenly released an album full of that same energy but with cool songs with melodies. Felt like I wanted to give it 5 stars but held back as I think some of that is just nostalgia 😂
I liked this album - instantly recognisable as Red Hot Chilli Pepers, I could see the influences which would later inform the album By The Way, which is the album I’ve heard before from the band. I felt like the last few tracks weren’t quite as strong as the first three quarters of the album, but the first 8 tracks easily earn 4 stars.
One of the best rock albums I’ve ever heard Right on Time and Road Trippin’ were two of the defining tracks for me, with the former bringing a ton of energy and life to the album and the latter being a vulnerable closer that felt borderline cinematic Some of the songs started to blend together as I got deeper into the album, but didn’t really feel any of them were bad (except maybe I Like Dirt but I’ll give it a pass) Favorites: Scar Tissue, Get On Top, Road Trippin’ Honorable Mention: Right on Time
This album is a big step up from "Bloodsugarsexmagic" just based on songs like "Scar Tissue," "Otherside," the title track, and "Road Trippin." There are a few others that are really good too but it definitely falls off in the second half. Definitely a more mature, interesting album and the best overall album I've heard from them (including their more recent stuff).
Red Hot Chili Peppers is a band that, despite its popularity, is nothing really special nor amazing. This album is a good one, some tracks are really nice, but there is some filler there also. It would have benefited from being shorter... or more inspired at least. At least the last song ends the album in a great way.
I really like this for 15 minutes at a time, but listening to the whole album started to drag on and started to all sound the same. 8/10
This is one of those albums that makes me realize how old I am. This album and their later works were sensations during my childhood, and it came out in 1999. That's a long time ago. I was five! I would have guessed I was ten when this came out. It's not on this album but "Zephyr Song" is the first song I remember being aware of playing on the radio. It played constantly and I loved it. I can picture images of car-rides where the song was playing, and there are very few songs that have that effect on me. "Around the World" is a full showcase of the classic Chili Peppers sound. This song captures them almost entirely. "Scar Tissue", "Otherside", and "Californication" is such a crazy lineup of absolute bangers. These songs are all so instantly recognizable. A third of the songs on this record are played out because of the levels of popularity they reached. The back half of the album falls off a little bit and it gets a little single-tone. They could have ended the album at "Emit Remmus" and lost little I think. This album has vocals that are synonymous with California and the 90s/00s. The basslines and riffs are out of control and must have inspired countless people to pick up guitars. Unfortunately, I have to assess the album as a whole. The first half contains four or five of the 90s/00s most played songs, but the back half could be cut down by more half probably. In light of that, it's going to have to be less than it could have been. The album would be an easy nine if it was just the first half. 8/10
this velvet glove, parallel universe and californication are my favs just a cool sing along album
A few years ago this would be a 5 for me. The first half of the album is still great, but the second half is kind of a dud and a little too long.
Good album, often underrated.
top
Love these guys
I own this album & consider it one of the Peppers better ones (not that they have any bad ones). I would put this as probably my 4th favorite Peppers’ album. Great songs, love Frusciante’s guitar & his return.
Classic album, my favourite of theirs is Stadium Arcadium but so many amazing songs here too
Like the band, heard the album before, but their uptempo songs do sound like a parody of themselves...
Californication is great. Good songs buried in here and the sound that makes RHCP known. I’d put this at 8/10 because I like it but I can’t constantly listen to it for some reason. Small doses are better
Blessed the ears
Don't view this as a cringe album. It is southern california rock at some of its best. Yes some of the songs are extrememly overplayed and yes it might not be the most technical playing you've ever heard, but since when are those the markers of a good album? You are lying if you say that this album doesn't rock and if you can't see yourself riding a boat listening to these tunes on a lake somewhere in the United States, you have never done it before. 8/10
Maybe their best album, though these are their songs I’m most sick of. Road Trippin’ maybe isn’t the best song on it, but is such a solid closer that I think it left the strongest impression on me. I have to echo another review about subpar recording quality. I actually had to go in and make sure I didn’t have low quality streaming enabled (I didn’t). My opinions about this thing are all over the place, which fits the music - 9/10
Nice, it's been a while.
Loads of bangers, bit long
The first half of this album is a no-doubter 5 with great tunes in diverse tones, but the second half of this album was one 30-minute funk rock jam sesh with Anthony Kiesdis ad-libbing in the mic and I'd give it a 3 for musicianship. So, I guess that makes this a 4, though with the great songs that are on here, you could certainly make the argument that it's still a 5.
Good album with great highlights
I'm surprised it took several months before I got an RHCP album on this generator. Classic album, not my favorite from them, but it has some absolute bangers on it.
Best Song: Scar Tissue Bing ding dong and ringing a ling a dong, California. - RHCP lyrics. Anyway, this was basically a soundtrack to the first couple of years in the 2000s. A good album, it had a few songs that could have been cut and made it a banger.
Not a huge fan but the slap bass and stand out tracks makes it a good album.
Strong front half, bad back half
Just a great album. Remember it well from my youth
I can’t stand Frank Black.
I know cool girls like the red hot chili peppers ,but this is where I tearfully admit that I am not cool, and am beginning to think i may never be cool. I like this album and found moments to be striking and fun. I do wonder if some part of this is that the sound is so seminal that I am unable to pick out the fact that they originated it. I do appreciate that they recorded this whole album in one room in five days, which is punk rock in its own right. This is probably something that would benefit from my understanding what people say when they're singing
I know it's a meme to make fun of anyone who like the Peppers, but they really did kill this. It's unfortunate that I'm far too much of a New Englander to get any of the California Commentary
Great musically, Kiedis rapping can be annoying
Verrrrrry close to a 5-star album. The chili peppers, more mature, with John Frusciante back is magic.
Cool album. I liked pretty much the whole thing, but there were certain songs that didn’t do it for me.
This has to be one of the most front loaded albums ever. The first 6 tracks are had me going. Then it went downhill so fast I was like this went from 5 stars to 3. The closing track thankfully saved the day and while I can't give it 5 stars when I would never play side 2 of a record it is a solid album and I think it might be my favorite from the RHCP. I know there fans would probably find that blasphemous but thats like just your opinion man.
I've heard every song on this album a million times over and I still tap my foot and sing along. Exists in my head perfectly in between cringe and gold in a way I think I'll like forever
Good album but still only the 4th best RHCP album (imo SA, BTW, BSSM are better). Songs after californication are quite mid tbh (liked the last 4 on relisten though). Overall I still love it.
A slightly nostalgic bias in this rating, however still think it’s a solid album…
-Around the World is my favorite chili peppers song and is an absolute banger way to start the album - liked Emit Remmus stood out more than on previous listens.
Yellow Chilled Bell Peppers
Guilty pleasure album. I've loved it for ages
There was a time period where I listened to this album every day. Some great songs here.
Never a huge fan of this band. It all sounds like it came from the same formula.
Quelques bangers
Drowns out my manager’s voice really well
A surprising number of hits on this album, which holds up very well.
Solid album, just not quite as good as “Blood Sugar Sex Magik”
I really enjoyed revisiting pretty much all the way through. I will say that it is very front loaded, though I think the back half supports it really well, even if most of it are lesser versions of what was earlier in the album. "Savior" to me is a great late album track. Probably my favorite of the non hits on here. "Otherside" is still probably my favorite RHCP song. If there is one thing that I found frustrating is after "Savior" the sequencing just sucks. Though "Road Trippin" I think is a great song and a great way to end the album, and the other two songs aren't terrible, they just kind of feel like they were tacked in there without thought of flow or anything. Still overall a really good listen not quite 4½ stars to me but in the upper quarter of 4.
I think the first half of this album is really great, and I think it starts really strong with "Around the World", "Parallel Universe" and "Scar Tissue". Really, all the singles from this album are quite solid. The band sounds great and this is some of their most consistent songwriting. I think the second half falls apart a little, and overall, trimming this by about 15 minutes probably would've given us a 4.5-5 star album. As it stands now, I'm going 4 stars on it.
Way better than expected. I'm not a RHCP fan, uet this is probably the best collection of songs they have
Holds up mostly well
Nostalgic
An all timer personally, I know it's flawed in a lot of ways. Lyrically it's horrendous at times but for pure funk, grove and melody. I'm absolutely in. 4 stars all day.
Was actually better than I thought. I've always loved the peppers but had never really listened to them after One Hot Minute. This album has some really good jams on it!
So many hits off this album. I remember when this came out. I think it was the perfect thing for the time. It seemed fresh at the time, and still sounds relevant. I like this one because I feel like RHCP sort of reinvented themselves with this album. The things that came after this all sound like Californication to me.
Full of hits. Loved in then, still thinks it's great. Who can't love lyrics like "Ding, dang, dong, dong, deng, deng, dong, dong, ding, dang". 4/5
Ok
Probably 4.5 really
Half of this album didn’t age super well but there are some undeniable jams on it.
The truth with this album is that many of us from my generation (millenials) enjoyed it when it was released, and it was one of our entry point to louder/heavier music. The "white dude rapping" thing was also probably part of its success for us, as hip hop was big for people around me, and all this *gesture* including nu metal, with white people rapping and collaborations between rappers and metalheads was a gateway to a whole new universe. And I think that, for many of us moving to other, "more serious" stuff, it started to be frowned upon to like this as it is way too mainstream. Yes, this white dude rapping is cringe sometimes; yes, the lyrics are totally dumb (but hey, English is not my first language so I generally don't really care to be honest); yes, some songs are too cheasy, but fuck it, it still works. It's not perfect -- far from it -- but it is an efficient album, very mainstream, but with some good bits in it, skillful musicians, and it was a gateway album opening to new horizons for many of us. So fuck self-righteous gatekeepers, this is good. The first half of this record is solid (with peak dumb lyrics in the first song, they really know how to open an album), with a strong progression until Californication. The second half is a bit more chaotic and it might have been shorter but, once again, it's not perfect.
Classic
Excellent
I think I really like this record, but haven’t listened to it in a long time. Starts strong but really trails off at the end. Probably their best work overall.
real nice
Really liked this one, haven’t actually heard any of the songs from it before so not affected by hearing some of these over and over again, the guys vocals took like one song to get into but it was easy to adapt to. Favourites: scar tissue, get on top and the last song which was a nice change of pace from the rest of the album. The guitar was one of the highlights of the album but I think the chemistry of the entire band works really well aswell. Overall 8/10.
Mixed feelings about this one. The songs I enjoyed I really enjoyed but there were some I didn’t like very much - usually the ones with the strange rapping. I liked that there was some variation with some more intense songs and some slower songs. Fav song: Scar Tissue Least fav: Purple Stain
Another childhood classic! Not quite a 5, but a strong 4!
Even though some of the songs on this album have been played over and over and over on rock radio through the years (hell decades) this is the first time I've listened to the whole album. This is a great album!
Really great
I feel like this album had such a cultural impact for those exact reasons. It's an album that doesn't have to really have a deep meaning, and it's just about being catchy and a good listen. I can see why people would be tired of the Nirvana-esque music of the 90's - that sub-genre is just about being angry and loud. So when RHCP's came along, it must've been a sigh of relief and a extremely refreshing album. But it's not just the intention of the music, it's also the execution that makes this album great. Every song develops in a intriguing manner. Every song for me is catchy and full of great music.
4/5
The songs are ok but i dont really like the guitar tone in some
A bit long but doesn’t overstay it’s welcome. Great sound and I like Kiedis’ voice for the most part.
Ok, so these boys are coo-koo! When Anthony Kiedis said, "ding ding, dong dong, ding ding", I felt that! Nah, but it's not a great complete album, but it's a 4 because of the certified hits on this album -- Scar Tissue, Californication, and Otherside...Come on, man. Favorite Track: Scar Tissue
Important album of the new millennium 🌶️
3.5* rounding up. There's definitely some filler in here, but overall, it's an enjoyable listen. Couple bangers definitely don't allow me to round down.
Nostalgia: 4.5 Enjoying the music: 3, sometimes 3.5 If I could, I'd give this a 3.6.
come on reviewers loosen up
You cant find a better opening 4 songs on an album. Track 5 is an old school throwback sound and then the title track. Great album overall.
I like the first few tracks, but the ending gets a little tedious. Nevertheless, I really enjoy this album
Frustratingly uneven, but highlights are awesome
Broadly I think this is a really good album. There's a number of fair-to-middling tracks, but there's also plenty of really big songs on here that really hit. A lot of those ARE the singles, but still. I think the instrumentation is really good. I'm not sure I'd ever credited these guys with that before, but there's some great grooves in here, and other songs are really quite melodic. 3.5 rounded up.
Popular, easy listening doesn’t mean bad lol. In fact, this was a breath of fresh air compared to a lot of the shit on this list. The slower songs were kind of a drag, though. RHCP is at their best with the groovy, up-tempo songs.
I knew a few of the songs on here before, like a lot of others - "Scar Tissue", "Otherside", "Californication", and "Road Trippin'". The title song from this album reminds me of a nightmare I used to have after watching the song's promotional video for the first few times, so this left a bitter taste in my mouth. HOWEVER, "Otherside" is an absolute masterpiece, I cannot say this enough. I love everything about that song, the lyrics, the music, the surreal PV, what have you. So I think this song was especially standing out to me. Enough to make me want to give this album a solid 6 or 7 points. Many of the songs unfortunately are kind of short, and some sound like others, so that's why I wan to give it this rating. But since I am not a meanie, I will go with 7/10.
Love me sum divorced dad music.
This is actually a very strong record with a lot of hits by ver talented musicians. But the fact that they are all convicted abusers makes it harder to like it.
First time listening to RHCP and I am loving it
hell fuckin yeah i need a beer on a patio NOW damn that title track slaps frontloaded i dont think you understand i need that fucking beer on a patio or im gonna crash out
Masterpiece by the Peppers. Funky and melodic.
This will always be associated with the senior year road trip to CA when Matt pulled this brand new album out and put it in. Rock solid 4/5 for this one, a little 90's bloat but doesn't sound dated the way a lot of 90's stuff does
Some great tracks but too much filler on side B. Could've easily been 10 tracks instead of 15. Such was life for albums in the 90s.
4.5/5. Hell yeah.
Some great songs but the lows are pretty low. Overall good, with simple lyrics trying to generate a catchy song but it works most of the time
Oiva albumi, iso kasa hyviä ralleja, joita säestää muutamat epämielenkiintoiset kappaleet.
I've never been a massive RHCP fan. This album is solid, but I don't click with it.
Their early stuff is much better but this is still a fun listen.
This is probably one of the first CDs I ever bought, but I didn't remember much on it besides the singles. Those are still, overall, pretty great. The rest of the album I'm not sure has aged as well.
Probably my favorite RHCP album. First half is amazing, but loses steam halfway through. As always, if they had cut the runtime down by like 15-20 minutes it would’ve been a 5.
The first half of this album was stellar! 3.75
About 6 songs too long, but plenty of great songs.
A lot of great songs
big album
Funky timeless
This is really good, especially the first half is just hit after hit. The band is on great form, John Frusciante is such a great guitarist and everyone knows how awesome Flea is. The second half is not quite as strong so 4* seems fair
Scar tissue 10
it was fun this morning when it was 65 and sunny, very cool main character energy. but then driving home tonight felt like when a character in a movie is having a mental breakdown and the radio clicks on at the worst time to play anticlimactic music
Third enjoyed first off has some absolute classics second half a bit more relaxed and up my alley
Fun, funky hard rock. The hits on this album are fantastic. Classic songs. And there’s plenty more where they came from. This is one of those albums that delivers on the promise of the singles. I like that RHCP don’t take themselves too seriously either. But they’ve got serious musical chops! They’re loose and rowdy and cool as hell. This is a strong album all around with a great mix of moods. I like that sometimes the bass sounds like it gets a little ahead of the drums. It creates a fun, chaotic energy, like the whole band could break apart at any moment.
Sometimes this album sounds really good, and other times it’s an absolute disaster. I tend to like it more than I dislike it though. It’s a 3.5 but a really good 3.5
I expected side 1 to be the better side because it contains almost all of the hits from this record, but side 2 really surprised me as well with some funky tracks and great guitar work. This one was an enjoyable record throughout.
Fun listen, not too much to say about it - I wasn't paying too close attention.
Really great album. Definitely liked the first half much better than the second half though. I think for me, the bass parts and certain guitar and vocal parts carried a lot of the bad songs, although I didn't particularly think they were the greatest songs I was able to enjoy those specific parts.
I feel like I’ve finally gotten to listen to music again. Honestly, the garbage I’ve had to listen to lately took away from my enjoyment of this album. Wut the heck man. I feel like music is best listened to at one’s own leisure. Great album. But it felt like a chore to listen to it. I’ll have to circle back to it.
Väldigt funky ibland. Californication är en klassiker. Skulle inte lyssna själv, men uppskattar sundet!
This is a very good album. It has some killer hits and some fluff as well. Overall, it's a good listen. The Peppers are a very talented band with a funky groove. I do not like every song, but "Otherside" is probably my favorite RHCP song.
There's some really good melodic stuff on here, and then suddenly it gets whiplashed by Anthony thinking he is either a Bloodhound Gang-style comedic genius or the second coming of George Clinton. Realistically this is probably a 3.5, but I'm rounding generously because I *adore* the title track.
I must have listened to this all the way through before, but I don't remember most of it. Like it though.
What a tune the title track is, and there's some certified bangers on here as well. The rest is a little inconsistent, and while I love PHCP as a general rule I don't think this showcases their strongest stuff. Still great though!
Love the drums. A bit lengthy and some songs I couldn’t remember for the life of me after first listen
It's pretty good, I like rhcp is small bursts usually Will I listen to again: 75%
The first 6 songs on the album are a 5/5, unfortunately the middle to end (except road trippin) blend together and are just a bit too grating. 4/5
Damn the chilis love singing about California and Flea really knows how to make a funky bass line. I grew up listening to this album. Not sure if i like ‘Around the world’ much but my favs are still my favs: Scar tissue, Otherside, Californication
I have no idea what they're singing about, but I love listening to it. Great band. Great album.
Better than I remembered....
Classic
Liked most of it. Prefer the more poppy ones rather than the slap bass traditional RHCP sound. Scar Tissue in particular
Damn, the first half of this album is like a “best of” collection which delivers banging tune after banging tune. Energetic rock at its most digestible. It fades badly in the latter stages with only road trippin’ bringing up the rear and saving it from mediocrity. All the same, I’d always be happy to listen to this on a 20 minute car journey and forget the second half existed.
7/10 - Red Hot Chili Peppers kind of go hard. All of the hits are fantastic plus I liked Parallel Universe. I understand the rapping was not the best but the rest of the songs were fantastic.
Have always like RHCP was happy to see this pop up
If you paid any attention to music in 1999, you’ll remember this album was literally unavoidable. That said, I happen to like RHCP, although I’d never listened to this album in full. The singles are so good but I’d probably need a few more listens of the full thing to truly appreciate the other tracks.
Bangers n classicsssss
The bands best album. In my opinion, yeah. They have the perfect mixture of their own craziness while being dedicated to the craft in a way they had ignored on previous projects. They’ve grown just enough to expand and improve on their own sound while still staying true to themselves. The psychedelic guitar solo at the end of “Savior” is, in my opinion, the best example of this. Some songs don’t work. “Emit Remmus”, “I Like Dirt”, “Purple Stain” are all a little trite and taxing. You’ll notice that all of those songs are on side two and all the giant smash hits like, “Around the World”, “Scar Tissue”, “Otherside”, and “Californication” all take up side one. Horrible arrangement there. I also think that, although original and occasionally interesting, the decision to focus on a theme of trying to schedule the American dream in California is, ultimately, a very niche one. Other than that, these songs are laid back fun. Lyrics are occasionally inspired and insightful. Other times not so much. Instrumentation feels energetic or relaxed when it needs to be either. Fresh sound for them, but works well. 4/5
Heard it before. Dang dong dang dong dang dong ding deng 4/5
They're great but I was done by the end of it
Initial thoughts on this album is that it is right up my alley, its rock and has catchy tunes on it. Nice baselines, groovy drums. Music to my ears! (No pun intended). Definitely one to add to my playlist.
Smoother and softer than earlier RHCP albums, mostly to good effect. This is a weird album because I think they became kind of boring and milquetoast after it, but here, the synthesis between their early party-funk sound and their later adult-alternative sound works for me. Best song: Otherside
This was the Summer Playlist while sitting at the beach. A Classic!
A great album with great hits that takes me back to a simpler time. The hits are definite hits, but I was a little surprised that there wasn't much else that interesting on the album. Not like the non-hits are bad, but I don't think there are any hidden gems on this album which is a little disappointing. Overall really good and catchy, with a nice energy. Top tracks: Parallel Universe, Otherside, Californication
lots of hits on this one. Opening Track "Around the World" is one of my favorite RHCP songs. second part of the album just falls flat for me.
Love the Chili Peppers
Front loaded. Gets a little bit monotonous toward the end but it’s solid. The radio stations in LA definitely overplayed this but it’s LA, they pretty much have to.
I'm not sure if I can really pinpoint why I'm enjoying this album. At least not exactly. It's really good, each song is varied and stands out on its own, while still clearly being a part of the album/sound/style of RHCP. Actually, I think that's really most of it, but it's also just done at such an incredibly high level, musically. The back end of the album definitely isn't up to the same level of the first half, but the majority of the album is excellent. I ended up not loving the whole album as much as I thought, but the first 30-45 minutes of the album are worth listening to over again. Favorite Song(s): Parallel Universe, Otherside, Californication, Porcelain
Pretty good and pretty catchy all around Album
# Album Name: Californication # Artist: RHCP # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: This was rather a big album when it came out. The songs were everywhere. I've always been more drawn to the style of JF's soulful guitar tones than i have for flea's funky bass. The first half of this album is good. Tracks 1-7. Then the 2nd half drops off a cliff. Its a tale of two sides. The second half has not aged well. I'd give this a 3.5 if i could. So i will round up to a 4. Its done enough not to warrant a 3. # Top Tunes: Tracks 1-7 and road trippin. # Would I listen to it again? Yes
This album did not get off to a good start with the rapping. Thankfully there was not a lot of it on the rest. The highlight here is the rhythm section. Flea and Will Ferrel do a great job keeping it funky. Best track: Otherside
i actually was surprised at how much i lkked this, however. so. long. i don’t know why this felt so long but it was. and also i was like oh yay all the songs don’t sound the same and then i was on like song ten and i was like oh… anyway. i did genuinely like this a lot. low 4
Misterios.
Great album
Pretty cool but can sound a bit samey at times.
I really wanted to give this a five. I was willing to overlook Around the World, which is one of the stupidest songs I have ever heard. So many bangers. But probably 4 songs I would skip every time I listened to this album. Still, the hits are excellent.
muy bueno
I think it's inferior to BSSM in pretty much every way. I prefer the energy, the riffs, the bass, the guitar tone, etc. on their other album on here. The only thing the same is Anthony's voice, which has definitely grown on me more and more I listen to these guys That's not to say that Californication is bad by any means. It's still a great album. It has its songs, like This Velvet Globe and Emit Remmus, but the highs aren't as high and the lows are lower.
Not to be confused with the Red Hot Chilli Pipers. The Red Hot Chilli Peppers did a good job on this album. The singles are excellent, especially the title track. I remember the music video for the latter well. "I Like Dirt" is the worst of the album. 4 stars for "Californication".
Proper nostalgia trip, possibly the first album I bought myself - the first 7 songs (excepting Get on Top) are flawless. Second half is hit and miss. Road Trippin and Savior are great, Purple Stain is pretty hideous. Good times 4.25/5
Love this one a lot
4 out of 5. Lots of nostalgia with this album too but it does sound a little dated.
Oh, the nostalgia of being back in the glory days... Hadn't listened to this album through in full in decades, but it still brings the same funk. Definitely a good trip down memory lane and some solid iconic 90s rock tracks, but it will probably be quite some time before I listen to the full album again.
Some great hits
chilly
Childhood classic for me. Nostalgia is impossible for me to remove, but I still think they are good songs. Don't like the production though. So slammed in the loudness wars, its almost uncomfortable.
Scar Tissue and Californication are classics. The Velvet Glove is great too 4/5
I guess I like dirt.
One of my high school favorites
they told me they sounded like Californication but they never mentioned they sound like Parallel Universe i thought they were supposed to be uncool
Wasn't into the Peppers as much as I could have been since I grew up during this era, but always enjoyed their music, even when I was younger. This record has some fun grooves and rhythms throughout and keeps its appeal after all these years. This band certainly set themselves apart from what else was out in the scene and rose to prominence because of it. Really a great record - almost every song is a hit.
I already knew and liked 3 of the songs from this album (Scar Tissue, Otherside and Californication) but for some reason I did not think I was going to like the album as much overall, but I was pleasantly surprised. I liked the first half of the album better but I'd give it a 4.5/5 overall. Best Song: Californication Worst Song: Right on Time Underrated: This Velvet Glove
Let's be honest there are a lot of absolute duds on here. I think if they dropped the 5 tracks from the back half of this album and shaved 20 mins of the runtime it would have been much better. 4 stars seems a bit high and 3 stars seems a bit low.
Classic. We all herd it. Pretty good.
4.5 ! Loved this!!
The first album I've gotten in this project is an album I've listened to many times before, by a band that I was a rabid fan of for some time in my early teenage years. Needless to say, I have a strong nostalgic attachment to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I can remember buying this on CD along with Max Payne 2 on PS2 on a weekend morning in 8th grade and spending the day playing my new game and listening to this album, which I had heard most or all of already. The chemistry between Flea & John Frusciante really carries Californication - especially the title track but really just about every track. I really love the outro jams on Easily and Purple Stain. Chad's drumming on the latter track is some of his best. As usual, Anthony Kiedis' singing and lyrics are the albums weak point. If I didn't have such nostalgia for this group, I think this would end up as a 3 for me, but the strong musicianship on displaying combined with my deep seeded attachment to this group despite them not aging as well as other groups I listened to in my younger days (though certainly not aging the worst) makes this a 4.
3.8
Iconic alt rock. I feel a little weird enjoying it knowing how nasty Anthony Kiedis is
Good! But start is godawful "I'm Anthony Kiedis and I'm here to say, We fuck in California in a major way"
3.5 Stars, rounded up. California mentioned on tracks 1, 2, 6 and 9 Californian places mentioned on 13 (Hollywood) and 15 (Big Sur) Around the World: Really interesting guitar riff that sounds kinda off. Not sure Syncopation is the correct term. The lyrics are pretty eh. Parallel Universe: Decent. The heavier guitar is not like what we're used in a RHCP record. Good stuff. ♡ Scar Tissue: This one has this deep nostalgia to it. Almost like it's reminiscent of a sad time. Appropriately named song. A nice slow jam to balance things out. The solo is good. ♡ Otherside: The first Misheard song I head. It's really good. The intro is a classic Guitar Beginner Tune :tm:. When the rest of the instruments enter it get really full. Good Stuff! Get on Top feels like an LLM generating a RHCP song and forgetting to add the word California. ♡ Californication: I really like the way the lyrics flow on the title track. It's a really good song. Easily: I could probably play it with the lyrics of Parallel Universe and someone not paying 100% of attention would not realize. Porcelain: Pretty cool Bassline, it also sounds very different from everything else in the album. I kinda liked it. Emit Remmus: Some nice high pitched guitar + a bass riff holding the harmony. The guitar is almost a drone and it causes a funny feeling. ♡ I Like Dirt: Really funky guitar and a groovy bassline. The Repeated I like dirts in the chorus are really cool. Damn, I really like this song. This Velvet Glove: The lyrics are good, the song itself didn't hit it off for me. Savior: Whatever until the counterpoint enters. Then it got my attention, but still not enough to make me like it. Purple Stain: Start really funky, I like it. He does mention Hollywood, so technically a California mention? I decided not to count, though Right on Time: Starts at 100%, which is pretty funny, specially after the slow ending of the previous song. Flea is peak in this song. ♡ Road Trippin': This one is an absolute classic.
Ugh... College... Not sure I can be impartial about this one given my personal association, but I'll try... I guess, all-in-all, it's not a bad album... The singles are strong, even if they do bring me back to the dorms... The non-singles are also fairly decent, for the most part...
Not my favorite RHCP album, but still pretty good. Clean and polished. Some all time anthems for sure. And Flea as always is the highlight.
Yeah, its a great album, despite how much Kedis annoys me occasionally. I love Flea and John... Lots of songs remind me of my teenage years and having a good sing along. Good times
A major come back, reuniting with John Frusciante after the failed Dave Navarro experiment. This album picks up where Blood Sugar Sex Magik left off, and eclipsed One Hot Minute. Stand out tracks, which are now classic Chili Peppers …. Around The World, Scar Tissue, Californication. A 4 star album. 4/5
I'm not big into the 80s RCHP funk but this album is a core teenage memory. Tracks 1-7 (Easily at 7 is a banger) are on fire. I do think this is an album probably best enjoyed in a car, on a sunny day, listened LOUD. Yes...Anthony Kiedis drags the whole thing down but he also gives RCHP their flavor. For 90/00 rock instrumental section, I'd put Flea, Frusciante, and Chad Smith up with anyone. I also like when they let Frusciante have his George Harrison songwriting moments with "Road Trippin'"
Hard to deny the energy and uniqueness of this album. I’ve always kinda hated on RHCP because Keidis gives off date rapist energy and their California skater dude schtick is just not my thing. But now I think that might’ve just been snobbery on my part. Enjoyed this (particularly the first half) way more than I thought I would. Their sound and attitude doesn’t always appeal to me, (particularly the tuneless white boy rapping) but more often than not I was bobbing my head to this
Loved their early music, tuned out around here. Glad to revisit the record.
groovy
RHCP are at their best when sticking to their psychedelic rock style, and at their worst when venturing into funk, rap, or punk. But still, I can appreciate they tried to innovate, and when it hits, it hits. (Scar Tissue, Otherside, Porcelain, Savior, Road Trippin’)
Their biggest album and maybe strongest as a whole album? Strong first half, the singles, a bunch of songs that could have been singles. Second half falls off though not as strong. Could have been a 5/5 kept to like 35-40 minutes, instead it’s a 4/5.
it ight
➕otherside, porcelin ➖get on top, easily another mainstay in my life and memories. my mom and sister adore rhcp, and i know so many more songs from this album than i thought i did. its odd because i feel like i SHOULDNT like them, but i find myself singing along a lot. maybe its the nostalgia. the first half of the album is a LOT more memorable than the second though.
This was my first time listening to RHCP. Liked it a lot, but did seem to go a little overlong for my tastes. Standouts include all the singles.
shama lama ding deng dong
I did not expect Red Hot Chili Peppers to have another appearance on this album. But I guess I won’t necessarily complain. I’m not one of those people who really despises this band. The hate gets pretty real for some people, but not me. While Blood Sugar Sex Magik was ultimately the real commercial breakthrough for the band, Californication marked the true beginning of their placement as one of alternative rock’s biggest icons at the time. In the eight years between those two albums, only one other record was released. And this was likely because of John Frusciante’s exit from the band. This gap was briefly filled by Dave Navarro of Jane’s Addiction, but it’s clear John had made his mark. And once he made his return, the band would create their biggest success yet. This record alone contains three of their most popular songs ever. And it definitely abandons some of the goofy funk, almost heavy metal, rock they were working with previously. Not completely though. I actually really like Around the World as an opener, because it encapsulates the sound of the album pretty well. It has super funky and loud instrumental sections at the beginning, middle and end, but also contains more normal alternative rock bits in the verses and chorus. Everything I said about these four in my previous review is still true, maybe even more so. The musical charisma and partnership between Smith, Flea and Frusciante is next level, and the one thing consistently amazing in every song no matter what. And of course Kiedis continues to bring songs down more than elevate them with his unflattering voice and ridiculous sexually charged lyricism. Those nice singing bits on Under the Bridge that I mentioned before are more present here though, like on Porcelain and Road Trippin', and it’s where he shines the best. I do appreciate that this is where John’s backing vocals start to play a bigger role, because he genuinely has a more tolerable voice than the lead singer. I’m reminded of when I first heard Black Holes and Revelations by Muse. Because I found myself enjoying this so much more than I thought I would, or than I really should be. This is definitely a front-loaded record, with five of the first six songs all being singles. And after a certain point, some of the deeper cuts just don’t hit the same. But man, that first half is probably some of the best alternative funk rock you can get from the turn of the century. So kudos to RHCP for having another album I actually like. Rating: 8/10
Never quite did get into this band- not that I don't like a lot of their tracks across the years but I'd never sat down to listen to an album. Well it's a bit more laid back than I though. Quite mellow in fact. I think this will take a lot more listens.
87% Best: Around the World; Parallel Universe; Scar Tissue; Otherside; Californication; Emit Remmus; Purple Stain; Road Trippin' Must-Hear? Sure
I grew up singing the songs, really good. A long album though so not all are winners.
Another album that I'd heard all the hype about, but not got around to listening to. And in this case I've missed out. It is a very good album. From the well known tracks to the not well known ones it sits together very well. Certainly one I'll look out for when perusing cd's. A solid 4 for this.
Let’s get the BIG negative out of the way first. The lyrics. They are either complete nonsense and/or very slightly morally questionable. And song writing and story telling is a big part of what makes a great artist. Musically, I absolutely love the album. Flea’s bass just slaps throughout and has his distinctive funky energy turned right up. I’m a big fan of Chad Smith’s drumming. And the band are at their best when John Frusciante decides he wants to turn up for work. Thankfully the quality music is enough for me to see past the artist that is Anthony Keidis and appreciate the art. Would be a clear 5 stars if they outsourced the lyrical part of the songwriting.
Huch! 4x Iggy Pop.
I mean, yeah, Red Hot Chili Peppers, yeah, Flea, yeah, the bass. Who's even here for other stuffs. Album is average cool (however this might be my favorite RHC album, idk, I like it more than BSSM.) but as a bassist it's always a pleasure to listen and play their songs, so 4/5.
Classic late 90s
This record has really held up well over time. I enjoyed listening to it back in the day, and it's still a fun listen now. At this point in their career RHCP wasn't inventing anything new but they know how to make a good song.
Lots of songs you’ll know
8/10, not really my taste tbh but it has a few good songs and sounds great wowiwo
classic
-surprisingly I hadn’t actually listened to RHCP before, like not a single one. This album feels sort of long but is very consistent in quality imo! Flea’s guitar work is honestly phenomenal especially in Around the World -Favorites are Around The World, Otherside, and Californication
Love this album, but there are some tracks I like less. 4/5
Classic rock funk combination with so many hits on one record
Excellent album. I was familiar with the hits but was surprised by the quality of the lesser-known songs, particularly on the back half of the album. They really know how to make a catchy melody. Bass and singing stood out especially. Favorite Songs: Californication, Scar Tissue, Road Trippin' Least Favorites: Around the World, Get on Top
Maybe it’s only nostalgia, since this was one of the CDs that my sister played on repeat back when we were kids, but this is my favorite RHCP album.
I’m a fair weather RHCP fan. I like most of the hits, but I’m fine to leave the other stuff behind. This was a solid comeback album for them, though.
Road trippin is a vibeee
I really enjoyed this, but it got rather hit and miss at the end. Too many misses.
Don't think I had ever listened to the entire album before. Really good.
Great album! Loved the sound although it gets a little repetetive towards the end, but still great! 7.5/10 prob
While this is admittedly my favorite RHCP album, it definitely suffers from being very front-loaded with about 5 too many tracks. While I'm not as charmed by this band as I was in my teens, this album shows they have definite chops in the instrumental department and subject matter areas. This might have gotten into 5-star territory without some of the fluff tracks, but all in all, a very fun, nostalgic listen for me. Notable Tracks: - Around the World - terrific opener - Parallel Universe - Scar Tissue - Otherside - Californication - Road Trippin' 7/10
Jetzt schneiet da wider bangers nach bangers ine. Han viel viel Spass gha bi Californication, de Anthony Kiedis und sini gang het guet abglifferet, han viel neui Songs für mich gfunde woni nonie ghört han. Trotzdem chani ned me wie 4 Jalapeños geh, will bi mir bi so "classic rock" oder fast "soft rock" chli s chribble im Körper fehlt. Trotzdem e classic woni froh bin mal vo vorne bis hinde dureglost zha.
Ja! Isch scho na ahsträngend gsi. Wie erwarted californication (by the way min lieblingsvideclip aller ziite) und die andere bekannte, grossartig. So gnueg wortspiel.
One of my favorite Chili Peppers albums. I have fond memories of listening to this album on the way to work for weeks on end when it came out. The album is a bit front loaded which seems to be consistent with most other Chili Pepper albums. I would still put this in my top 3 Peppers albums though and I don’t think they have done anything nearly as good since. Most of the albums since this one seem to be trying to relive the spirit and energy of this album and Blood Sugar Sex Magik but they fail. Not everything on this album is great. Some of the later songs sound too much like other songs. Cutting out a few lesser numbers like Purple Stain, I Like Dirt and Right on Time would have resulted in a much tighter, better listening experience. Unfortunately it was the norm to cram too many tracks on CDs at this point. Now that vinyl is back in vogue, I hope that modern artists are curating their track lists a bit more and saving some of these lesser tunes for EPs or singles. Still a great release overall.
Better than i remember. Front loaded with his. That's a four.
Frusciante returns and we all win.
I've heard this album before, but I still like it :)
Great
The rhythm and vocals stand out above the rest. Lyrics can be a bit all over the place. Which isn’t a bad thing when the lyrics hit they hit.
