Nothing to add for this magic album. Love Frusciante&Flea mood

he leik dirt :) 5/5
Trust. I do not need to listen to this album to rate it. 10 Stars. Update. I listened to it. 20 stars.
Fucking strait gas
Nice
Альбом пересушивал очень много раз! Даже был он у меня на виниле!
I LOVE THIS ALBUM AND THE CHILI PEPPERS!!!!! looooved listening this was actually my first time ever listening to it straight through and so good omg !!!
The return of Frusciante after the "disaster" with Navarro. Really solid album with classic songs. Some nice messages from Kiedis, but most of all the eargasmic play of Frusciante, Smith & Flea. Even though I am a big fan of their sound before 1990, I think this is their best album made in their entire career.
This is peak Chilis. Mellow yet funky, outrageous bass from start to finish, some absolute bangers on here. It has a bit of filler which would take it down to a 4.5 but it's balanced out by just how good some of the other songs are.
TBH, I could put this whole album on and play it top to bottom on my drumset. It's a great vibe, I love Chad Smith's drumming style. This skews my love for the album, but it's definitely one of their better ones. I can understand why many can't get behind them, Kiedis' vocals are a "brand", but not a popular one. But for me, this one is solid.
There were a couple of songs that were just ok but overall a great RHCP album.
Awesome
08/09/2025 A comfortable and solid 5 stars. Although it does have me baffled how they actually have made it so big! Spotify listeners: 40.7 million
Based cuz I love this band, but I mostly just play their greatest hits, several which come from this album. Was fun hearing the tracks that completes the album. This is definitely the peak of their definitely them sound
Finally something from my genre! I had the album after this, By The Way, but this is also excellent. This has all of what I want: A melodic male voice, guitar solos and hard drums. Full marks, will go into regular rotation!
Hard to see this one with fresh eyes, because I’ve heard many of these songs hundreds of times, though I don’t think I’ve ever listened to the album as a whole. I’ve never loved the hard-funk side of the RHCP, but at the same time, the contrast with the other mode — the more melodic, dreamy mode — makes the transitions especially beautiful. Also I paid much more attention to the way the bass texture drives things, and really enjoyed that.
👴🏻❤️
The first half of this album is filled with catchy fun back to back singles. It kinda falls off in the second half, but rounding up. Tracks to Track: Otherside
Bunch of great songs, and the rest of the tracks are all decent. Probably nostalgia bumping this up some, but this was fun to hear again, it’s been a hot minute. 4.5/5
Pretty fire!
10 de 10
Many of the lyrics are gibberish, the album is too long by 20 minutes, and the second half is not as great as the first half. But this is still a fantastic album. 4/5 with side 1 being a 5/5.
I actually really like this album - it’s very obviously red hot chili pepper, it’s certainly the sound I recognize by them. I think there’s a good variety of types of songs. I didn’t expect porcelain - it very obviously has a serious subject matter and the music behind the lyrics reflects that, it still has the same hectic vibe as the rest of the album but it has more care. A lot of the songs seem to have the depressive undertones, the lyrics feel very real and raw and are relatable for me - whether they are relatable to the more mentally stable, I don’t know. But those feeling distant and disconnected can feel connected from this album.
I’m a RHCP fan, so I’m biased!
Favorite band of ALL TIME!!!!!!!!
Peak Peppers.
LOVED THIS ALBUM FOREVER BLISS BEAUTIFUL LOVELY 10/10
Tik pradėjau naudotis šia paslauga ir pirmas albumą kurį pasiūlė buvo red hotai. Jaunystėje šis albumas perklausytas dešimtis jei ne šimtus kartų. Tai sakyčiau gan neblogas.
This was very good. Not one song sounded the same as the previous one. I also loved all the lyrics, it sounded very thoughtful and well written.
Great album
I've been a fan of the Chili Peppers since the 80s with Mother's Milk came out, as I just loved Knock Me Down and their version of Higher Ground. And then they followed that up with the amazing Blood Sugar Sex Magik record, which just reaffirmed my love for this band. They had so many great songs in the 90s and beyond. I would encourage anyone to go find Go Robot and Dark Necessities off of The Getaway album, two great tunes. Back to this record, as this album was a punctuation mark on their domination of the 90s. When you listen to it, you understand why. Personally, my favorite tune on this record is Parallel Universe, a song that just drives throughout. A great, great tune. Really, though, all of the singles from this record are excellent, from Otherside to Scar Tissue to Around the World to the title track. These five are all part of the first six songs on this disc, which is an incredible start. Yes, the record wanes a bit from there, but it would be nearly impossible to match that amazing front half of the album. Even then, there’s still a ton of great music in that back half. These guys have a massive amount of great tunes, but this record is probably their best, most complete one. A five star effort.
Groovy. It executes a vibe so perfectly. Also was the first album I listened to when I first got to California, so it holds sentimental meaning to me. It FEELS like California if that makes sense. It's warm, layered, complicated, but fun, even with the issues that the songs try to bring forward. I like it a lot. 5 stars.
Awesome album. Total classic.
another album that i've listend to a milion times. so many great songs on it
Landmark album for the Peppers. Good listen all the way thru.
Fantastic album. One of my all time favorites
## In-Depth Review: Red Hot Chili Peppers' *Californication* ### **Context & Background** Released on June 8, 1999, *Californication* marked the return of guitarist **John Frusciante** after a six-year hiatus plagued by heroin addiction. His reunion with bassist Flea, vocalist Anthony Kiedis, and drummer Chad Smith revitalized the band, shifting their sound from funk-metal (*One Hot Minute*) toward melodic alt-rock with psychedelic and folk undertones . Produced by Rick Rubin, the album became RHCP’s best-selling studio release (15+ million copies worldwide), driven by hits like "Scar Tissue," "Otherside," and the title track . --- ### **Lyrics & Themes** **Maturity and Vulnerability**: - Kiedis moved beyond sexual innuendo to explore **addiction ("Scar Tissue," "Otherside")**, loss, and existential reflection. "Otherside" references former guitarist Hillel Slovak’s fatal overdose, while "Porcelain" depicts a heroin-addicted mother at a YMCA . - **California as Metaphor**: The title track critiques Hollywood’s artificiality ("Dream of Californication") and cultural homogenization, linking Kurt Cobain’s tragedy to fame’s pitfalls . - **Love and Melancholy**: "This Velvet Glove" and "Road Trippin'" showcase Kiedis’ poetic growth, balancing raw emotion with subtlety . **Criticisms**: - **Inconsistency**: Tracks like "I Like Dirt" and "Get on Top" revert to juvenile funk-raps ("Ding, dang, dong..."), undermining the album’s depth . --- ### **Musical Composition** **Strengths**: - **Frusciante’s Minimalist Genius**: His guitar work prioritizes melody over technicality. "Scar Tissue" features haunting slide solos; "Californication" uses sparse, oceanic chords; and "Otherside" blends arpeggios with a hypnotic bassline . - **Rhythm Section Mastery**: Flea’s bass on "Around the World" (complex slap patterns) and Chad Smith’s dynamic drums ("Parallel Universe") anchor the album’s funk-rock core . - **Genre Fluidity**: Psychedelic layers on "Savior," folk acoustics on "Road Trippin’," and U2-inspired ambience on "Porcelain" reveal expanded versatility . **Weaknesses**: - **Formulaic Funk**: "Purple Stain" and "Emit Remmus" rely on repetitive grooves, paling next to melodic standouts . --- ### **Production: Triumph and Tragedy** **The Loudness War Controversy**: - The original 1999 mix prioritized **volume over dynamics**, causing distortion ("clipping") on louder tracks ("Get on Top," "Around the World"). Compression flattened Flea’s bass textures and Frusciante’s solos, drawing criticism from audiophiles . - **Remasters**: 2012 (vinyl) and 2014 (streaming) versions improved clarity but retained traces of compression, leaving the album a cautionary tale in production ethics . **Studio Innovations**: - Recorded live on analog tape with minimal overdubs, using vintage microphones (Neumann U47s) and Neve consoles for warmth. The "dry, punchy" aesthetic suited ballads like "Porcelain" but clashed with high-energy tracks . --- ### **Influence & Legacy** - **Commercial Impact**: Six singles dominated alt-rock radio; "Scar Tissue" won a Grammy (2000). The album spent 80+ weeks on the Billboard 200 . - **Cultural Symbol**: Soundtracked California’s late-’90s identity—sun-soaked yet melancholic—influencing bands like **Arctic Monkeys** and **Tame Impala** . - **Band Resurrection**: Cemented RHCP as stadium-rock icons, paving the way for *By the Way* (2002) and *Stadium Arcadium* (2006) . --- ### **Pros vs. Cons** | **Pros** | **Cons** | |-------------------------------------------|-------------------------------------------| | Frusciante’s melodic guitar work | **Production flaws** (clipping, distortion) | | Kiedis’ lyrical depth on key tracks | **Weak second half** ("I Like Dirt," "Savior") | | Genre-blending experimentation | **Cringey lyrics** on funk-heavy songs | | Unified themes of redemption/California | Overlong (15 tracks; could trim to 10) | | Timeless singles ("Scar Tissue," "Otherside") | Navarro-era fans miss heavier funk | --- ### **Verdict** *Californication* remains RHCP’s **most impactful work**, balancing raw emotion with accessible rock. Its flaws (production, filler tracks) stem from era-specific pressures and artistic reinvention, yet Frusciante’s return birthed a songwriting alchemy that defined 2000s alt-rock. As one critic notes: "While previous albums were spirited, *Californication* dares to be spiritual" . **4.5/5** > ✋ **Fun Fact**: The "Californication" music video featured RHCP as PlayStation avatars—a nod to gaming’s rising cultural tide in 1999 .
Man, I really love the Chili Peppers, and this album was probably at the height of their music in my opinion. The B/S/S/M period had a little harder edge which I maybe preferred a little, but this album is also just really good with no skips. Five stars, easily.
I am extremely biased since I can still vividly picture my burned copy of this CD when I was in about 5th grade. It was one of the first albums I owned and I listened to it nonstop. I still love it and still listen to it very regularly. While this isn't my favorite album by them (By The Way), it still hits.
Bop after bop. Love the chilis - such infectious energy and grooves! Big fan
The first album in this project I already knew cold. The first five or six songs are etched indelably in my memory. We can tease the Red Hot Chili Peppers for every song being about California (and it does feel like every song on this album is about that), but my God, the good ones on this track are stellar. Even ones like "Around the World" and "Parallel Universe" that aren't as well known are stone-cold classics. Strange tone poems to the powerfully felt but poorly understood emotions.
best rhcp album
I love Red Hot and this is probably their best album
Me ha sorprendido 😯
Class
Honestly it slaps
Amazing album. Classic! 9/10
Know all da wordz
Eins der besten Alben, ever! Wo sogar das Schlagzeug mitsingt!
it got really fun and interesting in the last half, i really enjoyed listening to all the songs and i even added a couple to my playlists.
Perfect, perfect, perfect! Masterpiece!. I like it. Listening easily as if it is just single track. Complete harmony!
Another classic. Im not all that into the peps these days but how can you deny this shit? Side A might be one of the strongest half of a recors of all time. Every song is a smash hit platinum banger. Its crazy. Even the less know songs are great. Porcelain was a surprise hit with me. Flea is a great bass player obviously. The guitarist who's name I'll butcher, freciante, is a great player. And the drummer who I should know wraps it all up in a little bow. Then there is keadis. That guy's lyrics show that sound is more important than substance. In the first song the Bing bong shit is insane but it works. I couldnt see peps with anyone else even though I dont really care for his style. Its a classic, listen to it
The first half of the album is a no-doubt 5, but it kind of tapered off towards the end. I'm going to round up since I enjoyed the hits Scar Tissue and Californication so much, and the back half was still pretty good.
On track 1 he already ran out of words and reverted to ding ding aling dong as a verse lyric? A bit sketch there. But no matter, it's hard not to listen to this and want to be in the band, and if not in the band, at the show up front and in the mix. I knew the many hits from this but enjoyed some of the deep cuts even more. Porcelain was a nice interlude I'd not heard before.
This is the first Chili Peppers album I owned, and it's on my personal top 100 albums. Just fun as heck and filled with songs you've probably sung to on your hometown alt radio. Although I have a sweet spot for Stadium Arcadium, Californication is probably the quintessential Chili Peppers experience.
Already one of my favorite albums, may have listened to it 1001 times already.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
One of their greatest albums, no doubt. Fat and funky bass licks, superb funk rock guitar riffs, great vocals and drums you can vibe too. Some of their best hits. It's an all around winner.

So this is one of many bands I was "too cool" for in my high school years, preferring Bob Dylan, the Beatles and toher artists approved by my siblings (who actually also liked RHCP, but I didn't know that). Eventually, Alex had this record at home when we were roommates and I got very into it, so I finally came around to. This album rocks. Listening notes: -lol who are we kidding this will be a 5 star review. -An early version of this review had a long paragraph on the centrality of california in the American imagination and the way its failures (currently) and heyday (at the time of this album) are both deeply reflective of something about America. But I guess I didn't save it. Suffice to say, this album actually feels like it instinctively has something to say that gets at the contradictions self-evident in the Californian and American dream. I think the title track is much deeper than the radio rock it appears to be. -Love the genre variation of this. The funk/rock mix (with just a bit of the talk-singing in places) works really well here. -In keeping with the 80s rock tradition with which they are in conversation, RHCP are weirdly horny on several tracks, but unlike GNR or van Halen they keep it contained. -Something I generally think is a mark of a great album: the non-famous album tracks are also really good. Savior is a great song. overshadowed but imo inarguably better songs, but really solid. -I don't love Purple Stain. Musically solid but it's a weird treatment of the topic of menstruation, particularly as it only considers the male experience of it. I'm not sure I've listened to it well enough to give a thorough critique, but it definitely leaves an odd taste in my mouth. -A song as repetitive as right on time shouldn't go as hard as it does. But they did it. -Road Trippin' is so good. I am not sure what it's all about, but the ability to switch so neatly into a mellow song to finish such a high-octane album (not including Porcelain, which does little for me) is really impressive. 5 stars was known before I started, but I'm surprised to say this is rounding up rather than an unqualified 5 stars. The album loses substantial steam on the back half. The back half would still be a solid album but it doesn't live up to the standards it sets for itself on the front half.
Hodne staraproverena klasika
These guys are my age... so, i should like them right? when i first saw them, they were doing a song called "real men don't kill coyotes"... and the song was pure punk... the video wild as heck... and i thought they were a novelty act that would have one video and be gone... but, i was wrong... that song was so un-tuneful, that i figured that's what they were all about... as more of their songs were released, i started to hear a really tight, groovin' band... that were influenced a lot by funk... and R&B... the lead "singer" is basically a rapper... but he's a TRUE front man with attitude... and that goes a long way... the other three guys are top musicians... "Around the World" is a great opener... "Parallel Universe" really gives Flea, the bass player, a showcase... "Scar Tissue" is one of those songs that stays with you long after it is played... a radio HIT... "Otherside" is another killer song... "Get On Top" is like "Real Men Don't Kill Coyotes" in that it's punk but a lot more groovin'... a bad ass band... gettin' down... and the singer tells you he's the big bopper... lol... and get on top! lol... right on... the title track "Californication" is a mellow ear worm... a little acoustic guitar in there to give it that Cali vibe... "Porcelain" is a sweet ballad that breaks the record up nicely... "I Like Dirt" is a pure R&B funkified workout... "Purple Stain" prove what i said before... the front man is a rapper... like a hard rockin' Jamiroquai... "Road Trippin'" is the closer... let's go get lost... let's go get lost... what are those? strings??? lol... by the end of this record, you realize the singer is a pretty darn good lyricist... FIVE STARS... a star for every member of the band... and one for good luck...
So classic. Great bass riffs, fun lyrics, so catchy. A no skip album
RED AND HOT??? PEAK
Não me classificaria mesmo como fã ou até ouvinte de Red Hot Chilli Peppers, mas lembro dessas músicas tocando, estar de férias, e até ter tempo de realmente ouvir música.
Contender
i like dirt i like dirt i like dirt i like dirt
I listened to this again, even though I’ve heard it a million tines. I particularly like the album tracks. It’s odd to me that this is some people’s ´peak chilli peppers’ - as that will always be ‘Blood Sugar Sex Magic’ for me. I don’t know whether to give this a five because I’ve listened to it so much or a four because it’s not my favourite album of theirs. Oh well. Whatever.
A classic. Always a great listen
This album is fantastic from start to finish. Where I think it shines is it's breadth - it has something for everyone and every song is very unique. Like drums? Savior is a very drum first song. Like fast-paced almost rap-like lyrics? Right On Time is yours. The title song Californication is almost ballad-like. And then it ends with Road Trippin' - an acoustic gem. Lots of others blend some of these traits into one song. The versatility and range of this album is just top notch (and the band itself is incredible). Every song on the album being unique is something more artists should strive to do.
Californian vibes.
I would be hard pressed to rate this album any less than a 5 star. The musicianship is just phenomenal in this album, vocals are great (some of RHCP's best), and the songs are just so catchy and easy to vibe to. I could turn this album on whenever, in whatever setting with whatever mood I'm in, and I would rock out to every single track. I knew a few of the big hits going in (i.e Scar Tissue & Otherside), but it was really the songs I didn't know like Parallel Universes and This Velvet Glove that really made me fall in love with this album. Easy 5/5
Pues muy bueno obviamente, es cierto que tiene alguna parte de alguna cancion un poco extraña, pero es un discazo, además creo que nunca lo habia escuchado entero
Awesome album. Solid bops all the way through.
Perfection. Peak Chili Peppers
Excellent
"I'm forever near a stereo saying, what the f**k is this garbage? And the answer is always the Red Hot Chili Peppers." From Nick Cave, whose former band The Birthday Party is responsible for Junkyard. This on the other hand is a true out and out rock classic from the late 90s. A fantabulous comeback record after guitarist John Frusciante left and then rejoined the group. It’s fun, funky, rocky but not too cocky. A little older and a little wiser. Around The World, Otherside, Scar Tissue and the title track are all S tier songs for the decade and whilst the second half is not as strong there’s nothing here that falls below a 7 out of 10 and delicate tracks like Porcelain and Road Trippin’ show off the band’s incredible range with aplomb. Album score is 4.5 if I feel dutiful. Take a 5 because life is beautiful
Listened before?: Oh yes. Many, many times. I seem to be in a run of albums I listened to on repeat in the early 2000s.
First half, "Oops, all bangers". Second half is for sure less iconic, but it's interesting enough not to drag. My favorite RHCP album.
Still one of the best RHCP albums, classic all the way throught
Awesome songs + nostalgia = 5/5
Fuck the haters, this album rules
Nostalgic drive through the end of the 90s, not my favorite RHCP album but definitely one of the top classics.
Straight bangers and the musicianship and production is great
Ja takk. 8/10.
Instant 5 from me
Its a 5. No brainer
Brings me back to Pinkpop 2016
First listen to this, loved it!
Super Album mit genialen Songs. „Californication“, „Otherside” und vieles mehr. Sauberer Rock !
Porcelain...
Favourite songs: Scar tissue, Californication, otherside
nice album, i like it when i like most songs on an album and this one is delivering that
Great album with a place in my high school heart. Amazing intro song. Powerful gems like around the world and parallel universe. The songs all flow so beautifully one into the next. Porcelain is so slow for them and it's so perfect.
Definitive Chili Peppers album. 5/5. All the bonus tracks are fire too. They need to make an expanded edition already
Epic
I have been too harsh on RHCP for too long. This whole albums slaps
liked songs: first half of the album (through Easily), Road Trippin', Over Funk, The first 7 tracks of this album are perfect 5/5 bangers. As seems common for the band, the other half of the album isn't nearly as strong; the songs aren't bad, but they do not hold up to the high standard set by the earlier tracks. That said, this is probably the best Chili Peppers album. The highs are so high, and the lows really aren't that low. 4.5
Already favorite
This album holds a special place in my heart, because way back in the day when some friends and I got together to form a band in high school, the first song we played on stage was Californication. It was also the song that introduced me to RHCP, and this album, and started my love affair with them. So naturally, I love this album. 5/5
What an absolute banger of an album. Love this start to finish. Lots of variety and many iconic tracks.
No-one does funky, punky rock like the RHCP - I think they're amazing. Their songs have a great drive. Flea's basslines are the best - not overly complicated (mostly pentatonic) but so funky and effective. Chad is a fine drummer. Frusciante is a great guitarist - in fact he shines on Emit Remmus which is one of my favourite (but lesser known) songs on the album. Anthony Kiedis is... the singer. Few people would say he's a great singer but I like his timbre and if he keeps his pitch he's alright. I love this album because it still has the early RHCP funk-like energy but also has some softer, more melodic, more mature you could say, songs. A lot of stunners on this album and no bad ones. The only BUT is... the production. This Rick Rubin guy has a talent for completely messing up the sound (he did that with Metallica too). This is rock music - where is my kickdrum! Where are the dynamics! The whole thing is compressed to death and sounds as if it comes out of a transistor radio with Chad playing on a toy drum kit. Still 5* for me because music is much more important than sound quality, but with half decent mastering this could have been even more amazing.
Best song about fingering I've ever heard
Very very enjoyable!
Classic
An album I've probably listened to well over 100 times, and one which I credit with making me want to pick up the bass guitar (which eventually lead to playing guitar.) It was the first rock music I can recall where the bass guitar was just as prominent, if not more, than the guitar - really opening my eyes to how the bass guitar could elevate rock based music. I still remember getting this cd for christmas, probably around 2001/2002, and I'd guess it was one of the first 15-25 cds I ever owned. Still a great listen, but these days I might enjoy By the Way more. Back in the day Californication was easily my favorite RHCP record, and still probably ranks in my top 3.
I love RHCP and this album is a classic in my eyes. Nothing new but a great start to my Saturday with a cup of coffee and this in my ears.
One of my faves!
This is a great listen! I love the voice and lyrics. The bass is great and guitar js just cool. Would recommend.
Alternative rock. Chill and groovy. Love the bass.
Best RHCP albums. Some of the Greatest Hits!
I keep handing out 5s but these are all albums I already love
Great
A Must have
There's nothing I love more than to share anecdotes about times in my life where I was embarrassingly wrong about a band or song or album here in these reviews, so I'll share a short one here. Red Hot Chili Peppers have been kind of a meme band for me and my friend groups for most of my life. When I was younger and in a heavy metal band, we often played shows with another local band that sounded like RHCP... they were fun and poppy and funky and it was a nice blend for our concerts. I have no idea where the idea came from to have these two different kinds of bands be put together on the same bill but it was actually really great, and we did this for years. Unfortunately, from then on, RHCP's music started to sound kind of silly to me and my friend groups. Maybe it's because we heard that other bands songs too many times and essentially were hearing an amateurish take on RHCP's very defined sound, or maybe it's just because we saw that girls at our concerts were way more into music they could dance to and that had initiated some kind of subconscious resentment. From there and going into college after that I then had instantly met many "bro's" who loved RHCP. It became a caricature of a stereotype of someone that I would meet and then unfairly have expectations for. Almost like what you would call a "red flag" these days? But it wouldn't really be a red flag, it just be like "ah that guy is a bro. When it comes to music he loves RHCP (and a little bit of John Mayer and Jack Johnson but that's it), he watches "the Office", and only "the Office", he isn't really into sports or play videogames, he can't do any magic tricks and doesn't have any good jokes. Unfortunately RHCP became this canary in a coal mine for "you're about to meet a dude and have a pretty boring conversation". Not that that's the worst thing ever, but I'm just aware of it now I think? Regardless of all of that, this album rocks. The first 6 tracks are all fantastic modern classics (ugh this album is 26 years old, is that not "modern" anymore?), with everything that makes the band great- it's funky, poppy, catchy, heavy, cool, fun, and overall enjoyable. Even the two non-singles (maybe they were singles I'm not sure), "Parallel Universe" and "Get on Top" are both awesome songs in their own right. This album could be those 6 songs and it would be amazing. I want to take some points away for the rest of the album because nothing else really hits as hard as those first few songs, but it wouldn't be fair to those 6 because they are so good. Even now I'm listening to "Scar Tissue" after hearing it a million times in my life and I'm just absorbing all of this beautiful and sorrow-filled track. Great harmonies on this one too that I'm hearing now through my studio monitors that you don't often get to hear through crappy car speakers. Many of these songs have a timeless quality that I think is partly because of John Frusciante's guitar parts. I don't know how but he really churned out so many great guitar moments on this album. "Scar Tissue", "Otherside", and "Californication" all have clean guitar intros and each of these riffs is unique, memorable, and timeless. It's almost like he's teasing the listener and saying "these riffs are so good that I'll deliver them the same way to you each time. I don't need any fancy effects or pedals, just take the content for what it is". I find that so impressive. All of his guitar solos are so good here too, all very tasteful and never take on too much when it doesn't need it. I can't mention any RHCP release without mentioning Flea though too, who is always being a creative force and carving out a path through the rest of the band with his bass. I love that the album starts with a super gritty distorted bass part on "Around the World". Killer entrance for an album. It's a clear 5/5 for me. These tracks are so good and really ushered in the 2000's in a great way.
YES.
I lost my v-card to this album, no way it wouldn’t get a 5/5
Pure gold
Listned way back excellent
I won't be able to give this an unbiased review (not that I review in general) because it was so formative in my music taste despite not being a huge RHCP fan
Really liked this album. Some absolute bangers of songs on here. Gets a bit white boy rap at points but it doesn’t completely take away from it. Specific rating- 4.5 Fav song- Californication Least fav- I like dirt
❤️🔥
An easy 5
Turns out I really like red hot
Einfach gut!
Absolute belter.
Still a great album! I remember my brother buying this when it came out. Scar tissue was part of the soundtrack of my summer that year. Really fond memories
A really good album that I enjoyed all the way through nothing to complain about really.
It doesn't matter how old or new a song is.. something about Anthony Kiedis' voice is just so nostalgic
The first 12 songs and I'm thinking...This is like a best of album. Goes downhill a little for the last 3 songs but wow, what an album. Feels like I'm 16 again.
Classic
Classic. love it.
10/10. I fw this massively. Definitely being noted.
Great - very spicy
4.5/5
One of the best album in the world music history not only from RHCP. 10/5
great album. classic. cali rock
One of my favorite groups loved it
One of my favorite albums. I love each and every song. 1/2 of them are masterpieces. This album is the ultimate come back. John rejoined, brought magic and chemistry back. (and tears to my eyes, the story behind it is really heart melting) Album produced 5 huge hit singles. 1999 was the year of Californication. Asked my mom to buy the cassette. listened to the otherside on repeat. Later when I picked up the guitar I was blown away how simple but genius guitar parts were. The album cover is very beautiful. Will never understand folks saying they r 2 commercial even comparing them to generic rockers and making tasteless assumptions. In reality they r incredible musicians who speak in universal music language, battled toughest addictions, lost Hillel to it, almost lost John (had overdose - blood infection and lost all of his teeth), survived and made people fall in love with their music again (and inspired kids like me to pick up an instrument). Sad I didn’t get to see them in their prime. Still the energy is high with all the dancing, jumpin, jamin between song, never repeating solos and each member amazing performance. This makes rhcp one of the greatest live acts. Many bands today try to replace it by telling jokes, being friendly and cute (like it’s 3h standup) which people appreciate much more nowadays than the actual music.
Yes. 5/5. No comment really. Great album with huge impact.
An old fave
This is a tough one! This album turned up at a particularly complicated period in my life and as such it’s a soundtrack to some wild, amazing, awful, fun, depressing, lonely, crazy, sexy, isolated, hedonistic, excessive, destructive times! Listeniy to this album multiple times over the past 24 hours instantly transported me back so I don’t know wether to love or hate it!! I love every track on this album, especially the first side/half. I’m not a massive RHCP fan but there are a few albums in my collection. I also decided I didn’t like Anthony Kiedis after reading his memoir ‘Scar tissue’ an awful publication that highlighted what a selfish twat he is. A deplorable human being who thinks it’s cool to gloat about drug abuse and pedophillia. His awful behaviour continues today, as a 61 year old man, he is currently dating a 19 year old girl. Yuck. I had to get that off my chest because I’m giving this album 5 stars and wanted you to know that I’m. It doing it for him, but for the music of the band. He is an absolutely disgraceful cunt who should be in jail. Flea is awesome!
A blast from the past that I really enjoyed
HEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAOOOOOOHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
Really enjoyed it!
AHHHHHH
All time classic.
I feel like this is the official “breakthrough “ album by them. Being a lifelong Chili Peppers fan until this point, that’s what I feel. In my opinion, Blood Sugar is a far better album but we are here to talk about this one. This is good, as much as this music snob wants to bash it from start to finish, I can’t. I mean, come on, there’s 4 chart making songs here. Possibly #1’s but I’m not doing my research on that one. And when I thought maybe they got rid of the sound that they originally became known for, that white boy funk and soul, they return the album to their roots with “Get on Top” which I would assume is one of the least favorite song of the commercial Chili Pepper fan. I will also hand it to them, where I wasn’t going to give them another chance because again, I consider myself a music snob, these guys still touched on the sounds from their earlier albums. As noted in the later songs of this album. I’m pleasantly surprised. The Chili’s aren’t sell outs.
Great album - many happy memories invoked by their passion of spin classes in my younger years fancying the teacher who played this each class ;))
Have always loved this RHCP album. It’s also the album that made my classic rock loving husband become a RHCP fan.
Awesome album. I’ll be coming back for more
It's that unmistakable Chili Peppers sound. Some variation here and there but you instantly know it's them. 'Porcelain', 'Scar Tissue' and 'Road Trippin'' are all really lovely songs but in different ways, like different sides of the same coin. The first is slow and sad, the second is uplifting and the last one is very sombre. 'Get On Top' is probably a throwback to their earlier stuff and it works, it's funky as hell. 'Emit Remmus' is the heaviest track here and is also very good. Flea is a great bassist and I'm actively trying to pick him out to hear it. Frusciante is so good as well. The solos he does can be short, sweet and subtle like on the title track, but can also be soaring and distorted, and they both sound good. The drumming on 'Savior' is almost tribal. Anthony Kiedis shows off his vocal prowess here too. Speaking of Kiedis, he is somewhat of the weak point. I love his vocals, he's got a great singing voice that I really enjoy. The rapping is slightly hit and miss though. I feel like when it's on funkier tracks and it's very over the top like on 'Right On Time' it works and fits well. On more traditional rock tracks though like the opener 'Around The World' he holds back and I don't enjoy it half as much. Also what the fuck is the "ding ding dong dong" all about? I swear these guys just spout utter nonsense in their songs! That's the only negative I can find though. It's a cracking album. Every song has a little earworm. A catchy vocal line, a singalong chorus, a solid riff. 15 tracks, nearly an hour long and I wasn't bored for a single second.
A modern classic!
Amazing album. Bought back a lot of memories 5/5
1/24/25. One of my all-time favorite albums by my favorite band. I can play this at any time for any situation, never skipping a track. The mix of funk rock, melancholy, and well-crafted songs makes this a hit for me.
One of my favorite albums of all time. I listen to it all the time.
I'm a simple man. I see RHCP. I rate 5 stars.
I have heard this album 1000000 times
This is an all-timer. RHCP is one of the best American Rock bands of my generation. This album has so many great tunes.
Superb album!
One of the best albums of all time <3<3<3 My favourite tracks in order (all 5/5): - Otherside - Scar Tissue - Californication - Road Trippin’ - This Velvet Glove - Porcelain - Easily (I love this song because it could be on Stadium Arcadium and nobody would notice, I love that we could hear that sound 7 years earlier here)
beatiful combination of chill and drive sound. goat album
Californication might not be the band’s best album, but it’s packed with so many memorable songs that it’s impossible not to give it 5 stars. It perfectly balances their energy, introspection, and melody, making it an undeniable classic.
I've listened to the album before and will listen again in the future.
Excellent
Yeah!
Classic and exceptional album. Love it. So many bangers. What a mix of funk and rock and soul - never gets old.
I can see why this is the best selling RHCP album (although I did initially think Stadium Arcadium would be). This album is loaded with hits and has some deep cuts that are memorable too (Velvet Glove and Savior). Its too much a part of my childhood to not give 5 stars, but I can understand the hate against songs like I Like Dirt lol
I mostly joined this exercise to discover music I’d never heard before, but it’s also resurfaced music I love that I haven’t listened to in forever. This is one of those. This album came out when I was emerging from the cocoon of listening to whatever my parents listened to (mostly the Beatles) and figuring out what I liked. I love this album. Having trouble distinguishing between nostalgia and objective preference, but man this album takes me back. The music videos for Californication (video game) and Otherside (black and white art hellscape) are burned in my memory. God bless this exercise
I probably won’t be the only one to point out how eerie it is to randomly see this album art today of a California coastline pool on fire. I loved this album when it first came out, in like 5th grade, and while a lot of it probably went over my head at the time, Frusciante was one of the guitarists who made me want to start learning guitar. Listening to this again now, I see why his style appealed to me even at an early age, it’s impressive but so simple and melodic, so many of the most memorable guitar riffs and solos of the 90s/2000s are on this album. I eventually became less interested in pure alt rock, and got more into jamband, jazz, and indie rock, and honestly kind of wrote off the Chili Peppers as something I was no longer into. I still think some of their more recent stuff is probably not quite for me, but holy shit the first 8 or more tracks from this album are an absolute onslaught of great great songs. Otherside was and still is my favorite. Back half of this album is less etched in my memory, but enjoyed Porcelain and Savior. Will definitely be adding this back to the rotation, what a fun revisit.
this is one of the best albums ever
Jeg var usikker inden albummet startede. Frygten for at blive skuffet lige som tidligere. Men hér er albummet som var mit Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Jeg opdagede det først i 2004, men der var jeg også moden nok til at tage imod dem. Other Side, og Road Trippin gav kuldegysninger.
bangers across the board
People talk shit about RHCP and it'sa very uncool to like them, but this and One Hot Minute are amazing albums full of bangers.
Geweldig album met toch wel hun beste hits op. Ik ben vree aan het twijfelen tussen een 4 en een 5, maar vind ze toch wel een 5 sterren verdienen met den deze. Maar afgerond dan. 4.6
After a few years testing different styles and making their punk-funk fussion style, they finally hit the mother load. Although I prefer earlier albums personally because of their rawness and singularity, this album marks the balance between their fussion in a way that could be played in radios and commercialized. This is their best album as they explore deeper themes and they finally get to that boilling point of creativity. Their best album both commercially and as musicians. Frusciantis return was the final piece of the puzzle to launch them into legend status. Everything is great here, the B-side songs are very good as well. Easily is a great song that never got played. Probably top 10 album of the decade at hand.
Damn that’s a lot of bangers in one album.
I've listened to this from start to finish many times throughout my life, so giving it a 5 is easier for me now than it would have been the first time, given the sheer volume and variety of songs contained. I truly believe all the tracks hit, and range from fun and inconsequential to touching and poignant.
Nostalgically good
Good one
I had this CD and was a huge fan. Classic Chili Peppers sounds that mix energetic funk with sweet melodies.
One of the big ones. Wonderful album.
Melancholy vibe under the California sun
All them feels of Australia
So good. 5/5
A truly exceptional album. There is so much soul in these songs, and the first half is just amazing song after song. The back half isn’t as well known, but the song quality is still great. I would say this is probably my favorite Chili Peppers album, and the one most people should give a listen to in order to give the band a fair shake.
Yes I like it!
Californication has always been my favourite chill peppers album but it took just looking at the tracklist to see how much of it I love. The title track is my favourite but parallel universe and otherside are great too. Scar tissue I have fond memories of my mate playing it a ton. Then there’s emit Remmus and saviour where I just marvel at their absurdity. Easily is also one I just love. 5/5
A well put together ensemble of rockin' tunes. Slow, introspective songs are paced well between high tempo headbangers. The basslines of Flea are immaculate. There's no tracks whatsoever that were bad in my opinion.
Beautiful, smooth and harsh at the same time, funky, rocking and mellow. The instrumentals are brilliant, the vocals are a love it or hate it deal. I am awfully biased by nostalgia, sue me if you must.
bangers
Just a great record. I do enjoy these songs.
Red Hot chili peppers have one of the most unique sounds I have heard.
Top five favorite albums of all time. Hit me at just the right age. I remember listening to Around The World on repeat. I don’t even know how many times I’ve heard this. Probably more than any other album
Some of these base lines alone earn 5 stars.
I own this album for years and have heared it a thousand times - but not recently. So I was quite surprised that - within this project - what I thought is an instant ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ turned into a tricky desicion. But even though from nowadays perspective there are some weaker tracks on the B-side there are still enough bangers and is more than enough quality and energy (especially in the bass- and guitarplay) to rock every party! most favourite: "Otherside" 4,5
Such a summer vibe. I put my headphones and my bag and went to a little park by the museum. First time I heard the single Californication was in Italy, 12 years ago, at 7am on a sleepless night in Macerata
Amazing
holy fuck amazing album. nostalgia is a bitch. i love flea. 10/10
Album 560 of 1001 Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication (1999) Rating : 5 / 5 The first half is near perfect. The 2nd half doesn't live up to that but doesn't make it a dud. I like this a bit more each time I hear it. Wish I had caught on to it when it was originally released. I was about a decade late. "Ding, dang, dong, dong, deng, deng, dong, dong, ding, dang"
If you’re a punk band who has gotten every rich, you have two choices: write music about how hard you still are, or try something different. This is one of the most successful versions of the latter choice I’ve ever heard. On the nose, yes, but still deeply enjoyable, and heartfelt, and even uplifting.
Great album. Great band. Read Flea’s and Keidis’ bios. It’s surprising they lived long enough to get to the Chili Peppers. Their history together makes their music even more magical and full of love which shines through on Californiacation.
Masterpiece!!!
Ah, a second RHCP album. In my previous review, for 'Blood Sugar Sex Magik', I stated that you could make a case for that particular LP all the way up to 'By The Way' and argue that any of those five projects are the band's best work; and I still stand by that. It just so happens that for me I'm usually in the camp of either 'Californication' or 'By The Way', and my preference for either can change depending on whatever mood I'm in at the time. Turns out today I was actually in the mood for 'Californication'. 'Around The World' starts things out with its heavy intro, funk driven verses and melodic chorus; setting the tone for the album. 'Parallel Universe' continues with those bouncy guitar licks, and phenomenal guitar riffs tearing it up for the chorus. Then we're treated to a double offering of, arguably, RHCP's best songs: 'Scar Tissue' and 'Otherside' - mid tempo tracks with some of the most addictive melodies you will ever hear. It's an absolutely perfect way to start an album. We all know the title track 'Californication', with its haunting atmosphere and surprisingly strong lyrics (and let's not forget that amazing music video). Other highlights include: The heavy 'Emit Remmus', The sombre 'The Velvet Glove', the short and catchy 'Right On Time', and the amazing acoustic finisher 'Road Trippin''. In all honesty, my one and only criticism of 'Blood Sugar Sex Magik' was that it was too bloated and lacked enough ideas for its huge 17 song tracklist. While ‘Californication’ is no slouch at 15 tracks, I feel like the band really tightened things up because there isn’t a hint of steam running out by the time it’s all over. It is by bar their best work - both artistically and commercially. They had already broken through before this was released. But I feel 'Californication' really catapulted them into superstars, putting eyes and ears the world over on them for some time. It's a tight tracklist, filled from top to bottom with huge hits and its own solid selection of deep cuts. Overall, it is the absolute best representation of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Now, I can only hope that 'By The Way' is on this list, too. 5/5
Anything else than 5 stars would just be a disgrace
we're looking at a golden jewel when it comes to alternative rock, the often immature and smug, yet meaningful and creative red hot chili pepper's top albums is fun to listen to. catchy lyrics, infectious arrangements, sometimes you can't help but wondering how they cooked up some of this stuff in the studio. i think "california" is said at least 100 times in this album.
Love this album. Grew up on most of these songs and discovered a few new ones. The whole vibe of this album is just fun beach druggie vibes.
Solid album! Classic
I haven't listened to the album for a while. Good opportunity to change that today. I first became acquainted with the band through the track Scar Tissue. That was an eye-opener for me. I've since had the pleasure of seeing the Peppers live a few times. It's incredible how much energy they have. Californication is a great album. 5/5
Great album
RHCP. Vinilo.
A classic album that cross genre, something there for all listeners without a need to compromise. Hard rock, funk, classic rock, rap, and all the others. Play it loud or soft works in both modes.
When this came out, I disliked it, I felt like RHCP sold out and changed too much. It took me about 10 years to appreciate it, now it’s one of my favourite albums. I think it’s always been great and amazing they could re-invent their sound. For me it’s really the instrumentals that drive this one, I could care less what they’re singing about. Light 5
Great album
Maybe it's nostalgia. I don't know. I'll make it to the moon if I have to crawl. 5/5
YES!!!! Totally awesome album!!!
Long time since listening front to back, still really solid.
Questo disco mi è stato sparato addosso quando avevo 11 anni e mi ha sverginato.
This is absolute perfection!!! From start to finish The Chili Peppers deliver. Kiedis reinvents his style and cuts out most of the rap he did before. The lyrics are more melodical and have an outer world quality to them. As opposed to his previous style where he spoke about concrete things, like sex, woman and drugs. Now the style is about the universe, being mindful and California. Frusciante comes back with a new personality. A more peaceful guitarist. A technical ability unmatched, now backed with an idea of production and making the sound fuller. After a decade in the wilderness, a welcome return with a greater appeal. Flea! Oh my God, Flea! The gift that keeps on giving. He holds this together, gives it flavour. I can't fathom how he does it. A power that just flows through the music and simultaneously create a bridge between the big banging drums and the ethereal nature of the guitar. The bass creates so much in the music. Flea provides in a way that is unmatched in rock music. Chad Smith, what a rock star. He eats drums for breakfast! Without Chad this is really anything. He defines it. He gives the artists in the band the foundation of Rock. His style is so heavy but so technically adept. A true rock star guiding this band into genre. This album is a combine of love. The people making it do it out of love for the music. The Chili Peppers are reborn from here on out and the world was never the same again!!
Had more fun listening to the non-singles. The rest I’ve heard 1000 times and go hard
Such an amazing album
The Chili’s never fail to impress
Such a great album. They sound so good, the songs have range and variety from catchy and fun to slow and more melancholy, like "Porcelain". Then you have some real classics on there with "Around the World" (which is such a great way to kick off an album), "Otherside" (which was the first Chilis song that I can recall listening to and really liking), "Scar Tissue" (first Chilis song I learned on guitar), and "Californication" (which is one of their all time best songs). Top to bottom its just great music, everyone in the band is on point and it doesn't have any super weird, super sexual songs like "Sir Psycho Sexy" which kinda ruined Blood Sugar Sex Magik for me. Overall awesome album.
it's their best album. love the combo of John & Flea. more maturity in their music. does feel like album lags a bit toward middle, but still overall an excellent album
Day226 - not many bands get better after fifteen years together but to me this is better than blood sugar sex magik. this album kinda defined their sound since then
Great. Kind of missed this when it first came out.
This was the album that launched them into a stadium band. Had it tears ago and played it to the death, not listened for years but loved it. Showed how good they could be on their day.
Alles zit ontzettend sterk in elkaar.
Great overrated album
Classic
Favorite Track: Scar Tissue
Fantastic album. I know its singles were way overplayed but even the lesser played tracks were bangers.
Undisputed!
Simply phenomenal.
So. Many. Hits. More polished than their 90s work, this is RHCP at the peak of their powers. Listened to: at home. Favorite tracks: Scar Tissue, Otherside, Around the World
Best Song: Otherside
i luv the peppers but they do have better albums overall. i like the stuff before this album much more
Fantastic. Great vibe. Probably my favorite album from them
One of the best starts to an album. You know what you’re in for.
i mean its an incredible album. while it may not be my personal favorite album and i wish they would return to the in your face funk/punk. Still a top album from start to finish
Around the World this album could Easily Get On Top of many people’s lists. Even in a Parallel Universe or the Otherside it is considered to be awesome not only when Road Trippin’! Right on Time another 5/5 on the 1001 list.
Brilliant album
Watching the videoclip of Californication on DVD on a small tv with my friends in one of our childhood bedrooms is one of my most vivid memories of my youth. I love everything about this album and could listen to it literally any time. It gives me so much energy, all the musicians are so freaking good. Yes.
Very good
Catchy and full of hooks without it being power pop. Full of accents and creative flow
One of my top five albums of all time!! Love everything about it!!♡
Around the world my fave karaoke song 🙏
Thanks for including this album. It’s always been one of my favorites.
Fruktansvärt strak A-sida. Bra balans på den punk/funk de haft tidigare och den poppigare framtoning de kom att få i framtiden.
My favorite band, this isn't my favorite album by them but still top of the line for me. Frusicante is an absolute wizard, Flea is of course amazing, and I don't care what anyone says I love Kiedis' lyrics and voice. Such an awesome album
Another RHCP album and another 5 star rating.
Brilliant. Love the unique sound Red Hot Chili Peppers produce. The guitar, the bass and the vocals all come together perfectly. Fab ❤️
I feel nostalgic when I listen to this album. It's a classic Red Hot Chili Peppers album, with several songs that have been hits for years. I never tire of this music! 🎶🎵
Scar Tissue Otherside Californication Easily Road Trippin'
One of my favorite albums. Amazing bass lines. Also, a tornado almost hit my parking lot at work. Coincidence? Probably.
a classic <3
.....
You gotta listen to the deluxe edition with Quixoticelixer. Also bumped this one as a baby and thru my life, I think my dad had it on cassette or CD. Goated album.
Classic. Already loved this one. Have seen them in concert 3 times!
Brings me back to my youth, enjoyed this album a lot, they have a fun sound and could listen on repeat.
Stone cold classics all the way through
One of those albums that I immediately celebrated seeing show up on the randomizer. Red Hot Chili Peppers are S tier 90s rock. They revolutionized the genre and created a style that couldn't really be copied. My favorite aspect is their heavy use of funky base riffs. Californication is filled with so many classics that have stood the test of time. One could argue that there are a few too many filler tracks making this album lengthier than it needs to be. But honestly, I like the filler tracks too so I'm not even mad about it.
Classic album that is hard to rate lover than 5 stars, so impactful and just nostalgic in a right way
The sheer amount of well known songs off this album makes its place on the list undeniable. Less wild and crude than some of their earlier work, this is RHCP fully realizing their potential.
This album shouldn't be as good as it is. The production is garbage, but pretty much everything else about the album is superb. Monster classics around every corner, and strong deep cuts. John Fruciante's guitar work is also insane, Anthony Kedis also writes some of his best songs here, and Flea and Chad Smith do what they do best
One of the better RHCP albums.
rhcp goated
My favorite RHCP album, it hit at a crucial point in my life as a graduating high school senior. Love every song, especially road tripping.
Love this one.
Their best album by far. As soon as I saw the pick, I hit play on my phone, turned on the bluetooth speaker, and just basked in its greatness!
Absolute Bangers: Scar Tissue, Otherside, Californication Bangers: Around the World, Easily, Savior, Road Trippin’ Still Really Good: everything else Love RHCP. So many good guitar and bass riffs. Also love the singing style.
That’s how you freakin start an album! There’s nothing I love more than album that grabs you right away with an amazing guitar hook and just sets the tone for the rest of the album. We got this album on the perfect day of our road trip. We were off roading in gods country Utah which just adds to legend of how cool it was and will be an experience I’ll never forget. Especially with songs I Like Dirt and Road Trippin on here. Bless you flea, chad smith, and the other guys who I don’t know their names. Bless you.
Amazing. I was never into RHCP when I was younger and I’m not sure why. I think I was turned off by the lead singer’s voice for whatever reason. On my listen through of the album, I felt the complete opposite. The rapping and singing was excellent. The overall sound is really just it though. A lot of the albums on the list so far have had decent music, but they haven’t been infectious like this album. The sound is consistent and executed well throughout, like the Rage album. It feels like a whole album. Definitely frontloaded with hits, but as I was on the last couple of songs I was sad that it was ending. This is different than a lot of other albums on the list, where I’m kind of waiting for them to end.
What is there to say? This album is fantastic. It’s got some of RHCP’s most well-known songs and it’s something that you can either put on for background music or actively listen to and jam out. Everyone obviously loves the hits, but the B-Sides also have a lot to offer. It was a five before I re-listened to it, and it’ll stay a five. Also, it took about 100 albums, but we finally got an album from a band I’ve gotten to see live, so that was cool.
I didn't think I would enjoy it this much
This album rocks, loved it.
Might be the first album I ever bought. Second half isn't quite as strong but there are only maybe two tracks here I don't like that much. High 4.something.
Fantastic album
Everything fits together here, the musical style, the vocals that complement the songs very well, a strong voice that doesn't get lost. A varied album with inspiring pieces, a joy to listen to.
The backside of this album is lighter and not as good as the front half, but man, the first 8 songs are really great. I like that RHCP expanded their sound a bit on this album, including more harmony vocals and acoustic instrumentation. This album gets a rap for being too compressed, which is probably true, but after One Hot Minute this is a welcome comeback. It was the start of the more mature RHCP and it was lucrative, as well as really a good album. I didn't take to this album when it was released but time has shown me how good it is.
Bangers, nostalgie, très bon album intemporel pour moi. Californication, Scar Tissue, Otherside.
Classic album! One song better than another one Every time I listen to it it's like the first time. It makes me excited! .....it can't be less than 5/5
Goatd
Banger of an album
I forgot how great this record is.
I was surprised to learn that these guys hail from California. One of the first CDs that I ever owned. I blew this thing out in elementary school. Over and over and over again from start to finish. It shaped me in so many ways. I can understand the hate for these guys, but it has never swayed the esteem that I hold them in. Their music is magical. The first 6 songs are just a nonstop cataclysm of expression. Pure energy and musicianship. Then they fit fucking Otherside into it… one the breakdown hits at 3 minutes you get peak RHCP, a steamy baseline, a powerful drum, rapping lyrics, and just the most absolutely mesmerizing Frusciante experience with soaring guitars and angelic harmonization. It’s the pinnacle of rock in my opinion. This Velvet Glove might just be my favorite Chili pepper song of all time. The only gripe I have with this album is that it does not end on a banger, otherwise it still remains my favorite album of all time, by my favorite band of all time. This album is far from perfect, the mix alone leaves a lot to be desired. However, this music is intended not for critical listening, it is intended to accompany your drive, your party, your hangout. It catches your ear and it makes you groove, and when you finally dive into the complexity of the layering you are faced with a cosmos of creativity. The album is a delight from start to finish and has shaped my music tastes ever since I first dived in.
awesome album. 4.7/5
there's a reason why they have like 30 million listeners on spotify
Vintage RHCP, what's not to like?
Are Gibley, one of their best albums and deeply memorable for my Jenn
Modern classic 5 stars.
Just an awesome album, so many big hits on here. And they're accompanied by really good surrounding tracks as well to come up with a cohesive project. RHCP will never struggle to come up with hits, but it's the rest of the tracks that define whether or not an album is great or a Best Hits one. Favorite track: Otherside
One of my first ever albums so I didn't need to listen to know this would be a 5, but was glad for an excuse to re-listen!
So so so good
Goated album
Skulle gärna spola tillbaka tiden till 2009 och lyssna på hela albumet på CD
