Really good surprise with this album... Mix of genre and standing out of any other album listened.... Some hip-hop, jazz, electro things blending together and in a good shape in my opinion. Was good to hear. Not perfect ina ll aspect but glad I heard it. Decent 4/5

This album was a challenge to listen to. The only way I could keep somewhat focused is by putting it on in the background while I worked. The whole album is just slow electronica/trip hop, with random sampling thrown in, and subtle hints of reggae. It wasn't bad for what it was, but it certainly isn't some revolutionary album, in my mind at least. Also, 1hr and 15 minutes of this kind of music is way too long. One song faded into another with this album, making it hard to pick a favourite. The album, if listened to all at once, would easily lull you off to sleep. It may be enjoyable while baked, but sober, it is nothing but trance enducing elevator music. Favourite song: if forced to pick, Dreddoverboard. Pipes Honour wasn't bad as well. Least favourite songs: pretty much the rest of the album. There were a few good songs throughout, but everything blended so bad, I don't know which ones they were 2/5

Notes - trip hop instrumental beat tape from producer “nightmares on wax” - most of the tracks here are 4ish minute midtempo grooves with different samples and textures coming in and out - theyre all quite similar and blend together - the bass is nice and warm in all these tracks, sounds great on headphones - comparing to other albums i’ve gotten so far, not as moody or compelling as dj shadow, not as experimental or unique as talvin singh Fav - mission venice - this was the first one that felt like a change of pace Least Fav - Groove St - found the samples annoying 2/5

I’m not quite sure how this one passed me by: my era (mid 90s), links to Sheffield and Leeds, trip hop. Anyway, it’s really good, lots of genres and influences but sounds great in its own right. Hard to pick a best song as it’s a groove, man, but I’ll go for Nights Introlude.

This is just a perfect trip-hop album, I can't believe I had not heard it before. Loved every second of it.

I liked this, seems like a good album to have on for a summer bbq or long bike ride, great summer chill album. Went on a bit long. Made me think of Khruangbin at times. Will definitely give a listen to Carboot Soul as that release seems to be held in high standards as well.

It's nice background music for a triphop album, but really nothing more. It didn't annoy nor excite me in any way.

Don’t know how albums like these get considered on the top 1001 albums to listen to before you die, not much substance to them. Like chill beats but it’s nothing special or nothing I can’t find when I look for a “___ type beat” on YouTube

I usually like stuff from the Warp roster. I think some of the earlier releases from that label have aged gracefully (even if they *do* age). But not this, though. What seemed leftfield or edgy at the time, and supposedly recorded during late-hours, weed-fuelled creative sessions (see that cover) now just sounds like boring background lounge music. Trends catch up with you so quickly for electronic styles, don't they? But even with that in mind, there's here none ot that quirky spirit animating J Dilla or Flying Lotus a decade later (I hear Nightmares On Wax is sometimes compared to them). Heck, even ultra-minimalistic DJ Krush, who operated at the same time for Ninja Tunes in a very close genre, sounds quirkier than that. Besides, and as far as that dubious "trip hop" label is concerned, there's none of the multi-layered melodic fest of Massive Attack or DJ Shadow's early records here, and neither the noir or vintage charm of deeply atmospheric projects such as Portishead or Broadcast. It's a bit bland, really. And overlong. And repetitive just for the sake of it. With or without smoking dope to it. So if you want to trip out to repetitive stuff, dub reggae probably works better thanks to its echoey nature and sense of space and time (there's *more* than a bit of dub in the basslines here, to be fair, but it sounds misplaced, even neutered, in the middle of those other dated sounds...) To put it in a nutshell, this record is more like smokers' *waiting room* than smokers' delight to me. Next, please. First song is so persona

Ähnelt dem, was ich immer "Musik für Klamottenläden" (die mir meistens gefällt, auch wenn ich seltenst in Klamottenläden gehe) nenne, dafür aber ein klein wenig zu abgedreht. Mittlere drei Sterne.

The shorter songs were better, I thought. Most of the songs over 4 minutes felt like they were DEFINITELY over 4 minutes long. They went on and on, and you could feel that they could have ended at least a minute or two earlier. Again, the kind of music you listen to, and then pretty much forget afterward.

Some decent drum or bongo beats - including an African-style sound on Stars and Gambia via Vagator Beach. A couple other songs had some interesting musical blends that I think were synth but created a jangly guitar/piano feel (Pipes Honour), or a bass-heavy melody (Groove Street), or just something different (Mission Venice). So definitely some variety but I still felt uninspired.

I think this is the first album in the electronic genre apart from Kraftwerk that the list has generated so far that I actually liked. No surprise that it’s a Warp release. The tracks on this album sounded composed and organic which is rare for an album in this genre. I didn’t feel like the songwriter was just looping shit repeatedly and adjusting levels to create the track. Looking forward to checking out more of their / his stuff.

I was not a fan of track #2, but other than that, this is excellent background music for working (depending on how much focus is required) and just vibing online. I don't know what other moods this album would fit but I know I will be adding this to my library. :)

Such a chill album. Ben R introduced me to Nightmares on Wax and I've been a fan ever since. Elements of funk, world music, R&B, soul and more wrapped up in a smooth, electronic package. I did find that some of the songs and the album itself began to loose my attention given the length, but it's perfect background listening. Fav Tracks: Pipes Honor, Groove St.

This is a laid back, slow burn of an album. This is actually great for getting work done to.

So this is the type of music trip hop youtubers ripped their samples off, makes sense for them to steal the work of an already talented musician. It's really diverse, taking samples from funk, reggae, techno, latino, and jazz. I get a lot of nostalgic vibes. It's an inoffensive album, nothing stuck out as awful, but I can't say I enjoyed much of the album. It's a coherent record to relax or study to. Too long, and the songs are also too long, especially so reliant on repetition. Favorites: Night Interlude, Wait a Minute, Bless My Soul, Mission Venice

Best Trip-Hop album ever? Ok, I've only heard a few but this is tops for me. Absolutely loved the vibe and sounds of this album. This is why I love the 1001 albums list - because of gems like this that I would have never heard otherwise. The album cover really threw me off... So, I was pleasantly surprised it wasn't a cheesy Rap album. I don't think there are any songs that stand out as exceptional, the entire album seems like one seamless work of art best-enjoyed start to finish. 4/5

Erik Satie meets trip hop music. I missed this Leeds based producer who creates a mellow combination of mesmerizing bass and luminal keyboards. Not at all like pointless new age music, great mindscapes.

Well, Nightmares on Wax don't like to be tarred with the "trip hop" brush. And I agree with them. This is chilled instrumental hip hop, which is all well and good, but does tend a little towards wallpaper. I am also surprised that this is not nearly as crunchy and lofi as the leading luminaries of trip hop preferred in their sound design (qv. Massive Attach, Tricky, Portishead). I can also hear the seismic influences of DJ Shadow and especially J.Dilla on the world of instrumental hip hop. It's hard to believe that instrumental hip hop was ever this clean and almost to the grid. The whole sense of sound and timing has changed so much since the late 90s, that this sounds almost quaint. Influential in its time, but not really relevant anymore. It's just kind of easy listening jazz-lite with hip hop-ish beats. Cursed by its own ubiquity.

This is okay. 'In A Space Outta Sound' should be on this list instead.

On the plus side, Smokers Delight does have a nice chilled vibe that serves well as background music. But as an album to listen to attentively it is a bit boring and repetitive. Don't get me wrong, repetition can be used to good effect. Problem is there is no organic sounds; there is no real emotion. Like a lot of modern music it's loop based, sequenced, time stretched, processed etc (even the "solos"). There's no art to it - a computer could have been programmed to make it.

Man oh man what an album. This takes me right back. The pure laid back sounds and grooves. I've smoked a lot to this album over the years. But 20 years late and sober as a judge still sounds awesome. You do need the bass up mind.

"Nights Introlude", the first song on this album, is one of the greatest trip hop master pieces of all time. Overall, Nightmares on Wax's beats are very smooth, but not in a smooth jazz way, and more on the smoothness feel on the layers of his production. The early hip hop references are very well put in songs like "Dreddoverboard", just like the spy movie soundtrack vibes of "Mission Venice" are perfectly fit. "Stars", for instance, is almost a early chillwave track. It's a very creative album from start to finish.

I bet this album is incredible when you're high.

Did I get stuck in the dental office waiting room? Maybe the first three songs, and then it got slightly funkier. But not much. Nice music to snooze to. Again, why is this on the list?

The best song was Pipes Honour, because it was a good groove. But even than felt like background music that deserved to be sampled or built upon. The whole album feels like something you should take as a base and create on top of. A 1 star in my eyes not for being bad, but for not being what it could be.

Quite the song writer. I'm impressed. I really expected them to be a one hit wonder where everything else sucked. But these guys are good.

Not for me. Not a big fan of heavily sampled music, this lacks personality. A bit like listening to a soundtrack for a movie you don't know.

Carboot Soul was the first NoW album I listened to, so it will always hold a special place, but this one is fantastic top to bottom. I was so glad to be reminded of it and it fit perfectly with the heads down work I needed to do that day.

I can't believe that it's taken me 72 albums to have the thought, "Hmm, this album doesn't sound like I thought it would from the cover," and, duh, oh yeah, there's a saying about that. I guess this was the first time I misjudged, and so I figure, just maybe, since about 1955, you CAN usually judge an album by its cover. When I read that it was in a list of the top 50 trip-hop albums of all time, my thought was, "There's 49 more of these?" I think we've already gone through a bunch of that list. Not that I don't like it fine enough. It's not designed to be catchy or anything. Re-listening to snippets, I enjoy them more than the 6–7 minute song experience. The one time it really caught my attention on first listening was the phrasing of "and me... you... and me... you" which I thought was kind of cooly jarring.

I dig the mood that this album evokes, but it not likely to be one that I would pick out on the regular. It is good background music for work or a hip cocktail party (at least I imagine it might be, as I don’t frequent hip cocktail parties). I will add this to my library in the hopes that someday I am hip enough to cocktail to these beats.

Didn't have the luxury of a nice, long focused listen today but this provided a groovy ambience to my dinner-making. Nothing was particularly standing out until Bless My Soul and its delightful boings. I loved that track and the next, Cruise (Don't Stop), and Rise and its repRise. It's nice. I'll keep it.

This is really nice chill out or background music… something you would expect to hear in a trendy bar or hotel. Very nice to hang out with - I found it quite pleasant for background music while I worked. I can think of many occasions where this is the sort of music I would really want to play. This isn't the kind of album that will reach out and grab you, but instead the music sidles up and puts its arm around you. I didn't spend a lot of time distinguishing between the songs. Instead I just grooved along and let it flow around me. The album coheres very well while still having some clear individuality between the songs. The (Digital Deluxe) edition I listened to adds 4 extra tracks at the end. All four were worth hearing and didn’t detract from the flow of the original in any way I noticed. Good stuff!

It became too repetitive at times

the standout track for me was bless my soul - as for the rest of this album, i honestly found it pretty unremarkable. like, it ended and i didn't notice for maybe 4 tracks that we'd moved on to other artists. i also went back just now and re-listened to bless my soul, and feel like standout may be too strong a word. probably, i am not high enough to enjoy this properly. that said, if i were looking for an album to properly enjoy while thoroughly baked, i would have to get through a *lot* of others before i came to this one.

I like this album just fine as a background album, one I can put on while working, or reading. I don't quite understand why it's included in this list.

I got heavily into trip hop around the time this album came out. Problem is that I never heard this album until about a decade later so it is never going to be my go to of this genre. I do like the how its sounds are missing link between Acid Jazz and Trip Hop and beyond. This is a great album if nothing but for its legacy

I'd like to say that I enjoyed this because I was stoned... but sadly, I was not.

It is a long trek to the end, though the music is an interesting assembling of electronic, hip-hop and creating crafting. Nothing that left a permanent mark, but it was an enjoyable journey.

So glad this wasn't a reggae album as I expected. Perfect example of airport music.

Its perfectly fine to put this on in the background because of the decent grooves and an okay vibe, but it's a little too mellow and boring for me. 2/5.

The first song is great, jazzy, sophisticated sounding. Great first impression; expecting good things. Nest song a little funkier, more soulful...very nice. A couple more songs inn super smooth, organic...Trip Hop the way Trip Hop should be. Me likey. It does get a little long...a little samey for active listening , becomes more of a background listening experience but a really really good background listening experience. Put this on at a dinner party and I think you have the perfect backdrop. 4 stars

I worry I’ve lost my way since I last played it. After the joy of seeing this album again after so many years had subsided I immediately started wondering where there’s apostrophe missing in the album title.

Gotta love some trip-hop. The beats and sounds on this thing are hazy and wacky, lots of cool noises that sound kind of underwater and industrial. Really creative, really interesting and really catchy

Première très bonne surprise au lancement de cet album : il ne s'agit pas de musique reggae. On enchaîne les premières pistes avec enthousiasme, tout se passe à merveille, jusqu'au moment où l'on se rend compte environ une heure après avoir lancé l'écoute que la troisième piste vient à peine de commencer. Rapidement, on en a marre. On a envie que ça s'arrête. On tombe alors sur le morceau Cruise (Don't stop) qui nous explique au sein de ses parenthèses que l'on y est encore pour quelques heures. Le DJ responsable de cette mascarade est un certain Nightmares On Wax. Son style de musique chill-out aurait merité d'être appelé repetitive-out, ou même not-interesting-out, ou carrément tchoupits-out. On emmerde l'artiste ainsi que ses proches même s'ils n'ont rien demandé.

Am meisten wundert mich gerade, dass Smoker’s Delight auf Warp erschienen ist - könnte aber zum Teil erklären, warum es auf dieser Liste ist. Jedenfalls so ziemlich das Gegenteil von aufregender Musik; Tapetensound passend zum Tapetencover. Ganz nett arrangiert alles, wurde in den 90ern auch viel gekifft zu. Aber hat es was gebracht? Ich weiß ja nicht.

Smokers Delight is an inoffensive blend of reggae, hip hop, Latin, soul, and downtempo that glides through the neural pathways unimpeded by any novel or challenging sonic concepts. It's mellow restaurant or club music. That said, it's all very skillfully done. Every sample, the way it's mixed, the sequencing, etc, is all calculated to make you relax and just groove with the music in the background. I find it depressing though that this album is on the 1001 list. I have no reason to doubt that Smoker's Delight is influential...on other artists who make inconsequential aural wallpaper. It would seem more appropriate to review an album like this in an industry magazine, like Restaurants Today. How to rate? I'll give it three stars for the obvious skill with which was made, but to me this falls in the same basic category as nu-jazz. It's music for people who don't really like music, who just want something in the background while they study or vacuum or take a dump.

OK background music, but despite its length it fails to rise beyond that.

I find this album really enjoyable and relaxing all the way through. No bad songs. I give it a 4/5, though my parents loved this album when I was growing up so some of the good review may be nostalgia for me.

Loved this and rabbit hole stuff for other things like it.

I was very pleasantly surlrised by this album. Looking at the cover and the name I was absolutely expecting reggae which was not the case. Instead I got cool trip hop I could chill to.

What a generic heap of crap. Uninspired from start to finish, and so repetitive. Maybe I'm just hungry, but I did not enjoy this...
