Reviews (page 4 of 11)

Fun and creative. What’s not to like?

Fats was one of my father's absolute favorites so I've had a lifetime of exposure to his music. This is classic proto-rock 'n' roll. It's not just simple blues, it's become something more, and arguably this is where it all started.

i’m shocked at how much i liked this!! really fun in every song, just some classic rock and roll

I hear what they’re saying about how he influenced Elvis and The Beatles. It was ok. We’ll go 4/5 on deference.

Reminds me of my Dad and what he’d listen to when he was growing up

A 50’s Bop

first listen great stuff

Half the album is missing on spotify but I know most from band days.

Feel good rock n roll. Didn’t stop smiling from beginning to end. Will have to find it on vinyl and truly hear it the way it is meant to be listening to. It was very influential and you can see why.

A good album, I enjoyed the music style. I liked Blueberry Hill, Blue Monday and So Long the most.

frumrokk? helvíti gaman af þessu eins og nafnanum waller.

Had to create a playlist to recreate this album for Apple Music streaming. https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/this-is-fats-domino/pl.u-BqENS1jV119 . Excellent. Terrific music and probably the first ever rock and roll song ever written and recorded? Very cool.

Fun 4 stars

Some good solid oldies. I like the style.

Fun album.

Great voice, classic songs. A fun listen.

After a long day at work, I come home, I grab a beer, I walk into my little workshop where I repair guitars, and i put something like this on while i tinker away. I really enjoyed this. I swear I was born too late sometimes😆 Every song just feels like it is meant to be there and the album feels just the right length. None of the songs are overly catchy, but none seem boring or skippable. I just felt so.... relaxed.

good old classic

It took me awhile to figure out this album really isn't on Spotify and ended up cueing up each song individually. No matter, I love this time period, old time rock n roll and this album was no exception. I've been letting this genre play all day over last few days. Really wish I could go back and see some of these musicians in concert. This was a very good listen and enjoyed every song. Every time I hear Blueberry Hill, I think of Ritchie Cunningham from Happy Days. And if you know what I'm talking about, you're old like me. What did ever happen to his brother, Chuck? Just a very good listening experience. 4

Sounds good

This entire album was hard to find but I eventually did find the entire thing on YouTube. This belongs in the book and I had not heard any of these songs before but I still enjoyed it. For some reason I expected more background vocals on these songs. I do not know why I expected this. This is great old school not-rock and roll (Fats Domino did consider his music rock and roll) that influenced so many other artists.

Fats is fats baby

Blueberry Hill is such a great song. Let me tell you in 1950s euphemisms about how I drove out to Inspiration Point and got a handy from Barbara in the front seat.

While the white nationalist nostalgia for the 50's is mostly terrifying, Fats Domino still bangs.

Short and sweet.

Love Fats…couldn’t find this album on Tidal.

So. This is one of the best purely rock 'n' roll albums of the time that I've heard. Fats' voice is beautiful and the playing is soulful and tasteful. The only reason I gove it 4/5 is because this album, like many of contemporaries, can be a little bit repetitive. But all in all, a rock 'n' roll triumph

Interesting tape machine distorsion.

Beautiful and jazzy.

I am excited for this today! I’ve not listened a complete fats domino album before and I am in an oldies mood today. Having a real problem trying to listen to this. YouTube music doesn’t seem to have the album, but I followed the link above to the YouTube playlist and that is working but it pauses after each track. Really messing up the enjoyment. So many of these songs sound so similar it feels lazy but the songs are so pleasant it really doesn’t matter. Just feels like the same song over and over again and I really don’t care.

Couldn’t find the album but I listened to Fats Domino Swings instead & it did indeed swing.

I don't think I've spent much time listening to Fats on purpose, but I do know the classics. Is it a copout to use a compilation album as an example? I digress. He was one of the greats, and had such a good sound. I'm surprised they didn't choose a compilation with "Ain't That a Shame?" on it, though. I don't think this necessarily sticks with me as anything exciting but I'm not overly well versed on him. It was pretty good and some great rhythm and blues.

Really great , strong voice and piano. An influential musician and great music

Not my usual, but I enjoyed it.

I loved it. Surprisingly good recording of his outstanding voice.

Blueberry Hill and Honey Chile are great. Also enjoy Blue Monday and What's the Reason I'm not Pleasing You. Album is quite short but high quality. That said it does feel weird to include a compilation album. Why not include Fats Domino Swings instead? Would have made a lot more sense.

I know he’s one of the Godfathers of Rock n Roll, but I only really know Blueberry Hill by Fats Domino. It’s a great song and I can see why it endures but listening to this, I wonder why I’m not more familiar with the rest of his work. I know plenty of his songs but mainly as covered by others. I liked this. It felt good. I’ll dig deeper.

Off the cuff remark: just great. Joyous, in places, but love the somehow understated delivery in many songs Standout Track: Probably Blueberry Hill which is already very familiar to me. Revisit?: Yes.

Those big ass dominos

Besti Fats með hellað sound! Hugljúft og gott.

4.5/5. No full album on Spotify and songs were spread out over random compilations but it was worth it to stitch it all together. Fats is the coolest cat.

Enjoyed this. Sound like Elvis, lovely voice

Fats rounds off a good week! I enjoyed this quite a bit more than most 50s rock and roll, I think because of the NOLA Boogie-Woogie jazz influences this had

I love you 20-minute albums from the 1950s!

# Album Name: This is fats domino # Artist: Fats Domino # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: Great opener with blueberry hill. Outstanding track. Loved the vibe of this album. Fats is going for it. I enjoyed the rest of the album. Good listen but not great. # Top Tunes: Blueberry hill # Would I listen to it again? Yes

Blues rock. More blues. Little jazz. Loved it. Better than little Richard. Jazzy boogie woogie piano sax. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It’s pretty wild to consider this was the vanguard of popular rock and roll, considering that the Beatles, Stones and the rest of the British Invasion were less than a decade away and within two decades of its release, the genre had blossomed into a kaleidoscope of musical styles, subgenres and sounds. It’s proof that rock and roll had an incredibly fertile early growth spurt. Anyway, Fats Domino deserves a ton of respect as a trailblazer, both musically and culturally, for popularizing a new form of music in an era of suffocating conformity and racial segregation. Musically, this album feels a little like a tale of two sides, and most interesting to me are the more overtly blues-influenced numbers that dominate the second side, such as the instrumental “The Fat Man’s Hop,” which features a guitar solo, and the hard-driving “You Done Me Wrong,” where Fats opens up a bit more vocally. Also feel obligated to call out the lovely sax solo on “So Long.”

I didn't expect a rock record from the 50s to have a song that surprised me, but Honey Child with its AABCC rhyme structure did.

After two days of elvis costello this was a real breath of fresh air

Good ol’ timey rhythm and blues.

such an easy listen. runs down the ear canal like water... figuratively speaking... sorta...

Love me some Fats.

I loved it! It was hard to find a playlist with all of the songs, but I am a big fan!

Classic. And safe. There is no way to avoid swinging along with 'Blueberry Hill,' 'Blue Monday,' was a perfect pick-me-up for my Monday. This is my first review and a compilation album (I'm assuming of single-45s?) is a little tough to do. These are the fan favorites, the juke-box hits. I'd never hate on this, but this particular compilation probably unfairly makes Fats a little one-dimensional. Hmmm, I wonder if there was a box of expectations in our country at the time that he was expected to conform to?

Finally, something from the early times! Loved this one, saxy songs all over. Quick listen, makes me dance, and I'm no dancer.

Just excellent old songs here

Overall, this is a very fun album that just puts you in a good mood and makes you want to get up and dance. It’s simple, but simple isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Simple, but fun, and it left me wanting more. Fats is not only a New Orleans legend but a music legend in general and I was lucky to see him play a few times at Jazzfest as a kid even if I don’t really remember it.

i like it! i had been wanting to discover blues albums so this was very welcome.

oh hell yeah, this is just so damn fun. absolutely classic shit right here

Actually hard to find on streaming services, so I listened to 1959's Fats Domino Swings. Good stuff, I've heard most of these at one point or another. "Ain't That A Shame" is a standout. "My Blue Heaven" and "Blueberry Hill" and "Goin' Home" and "I'm Walkin'"are good. Longest track on the album is 2:46, gotta respect a tight pop song.

I'll admit, this album took me a bit to find. I had to check YouTube, and I also had to steer clear of the similarly named album This is Fats, which has a completely different track listing. With that out of the way, Fats Domino is someone I heard of before from one of his first hits, "Ain't That a Shame". While Fats considered himself an R&B musician, his contributions helped shape rock and roll music such that even Elvis Presley and the Beatles were influenced by him. As for his third album, This is Fats Domino! is a solid collection of old-school tunes carried by Fats' belting delivery and excellent piano playing. The rhythm section swung and swayed as needed, and the saxophone players added an extra layer of pizzazz. From the opening ballad rendition of Sammy Kaye's "Blueberry Hill" to the high-energy closer "Trust in Me" and hits like "Blue Monday" and "Poor, Poor Me", Fats and Dave Bartholomew wrote and compiled a good, jaunty variety of songs. Sure, this album may not be super exciting in the modern age with its simplistic song structures. But it made for an entertaining listen all the way through, and I'd say that's commendable for the legend that was Fats Domino.

Easy listening. Very easy to get into and just let it flow over you. Classic, innovative stuff

More of a collection of songs than a "properly" cohesive album, but that's just the era. The tunes are good though, some certified classics. I know I heard some of these listening to the oldies radio station growing up, but early rock and roll is a genre I haven't really explored so I'm glad this one came up.

All in 3/4! Very catchy. Influential music. Love his voice and personality.

i need to be in NOLA <3

Great R&B. Fats' baritone is pure sex over the top of a great band. The only criticism I have is that some of the tracks are a bit too 'trad'. That's more than made up for by rockers like Honey Chile. Tracks where he's banging the keys like La La are definitely the best. Its no surprise he caused riots when you hear the banjo on Trust in Me. The letdown is the recording quality which is what it is I suppose. Makes you wish you could have been there live. Highly recommend watching him play Blueberry Hill on the Ed Sullivan Show to get the charisma of the man.

Such a soothing voice, very casual “big band” music. It has soul and class all wrapped up in one. Great for background enjoyment, as well as critical listening.

First off, it is really hard to find this album. On Spotify half the songs weren't playable, and Apple music didn't have it all. I had to hunt down individual tracks, which took away the experience of listening to the album as a whole. Which is a shame, because this is good stuff. I would love to be in a small bar in New Orleans listening to him and drinking an old fashioned.

01) Blueberry Hill - 10,0 02) Honey Chile - 8,0 03) What's the Reason I'm Not Pleasing You - 7,5 04) Blue Monday - 8,5 05) So Long - 8,0 06) La La - 7,5 07) Troubles of My Own - 7,5 08) You Done Me Wrong - 7,5 09) Reeling and Rocking - 7,5 10) The Fat Man's Hop - 7,5 11) Poor Poor Me - 7,5 12) Trust In Me - 7,0 TOTAL: 7,83 (78/100) Current ranking: 196/519

Det här går liksom inte att tycka illa om.

Makes me feel happy. I'm staying in the bar/cafe where this is on

Absolute classic!

The horn arrangements are the things that impress me the most on this album. It was truly a golden age of horn sections. And how about those bongo solo breaks in "Don't You Hear Me Calling You"?

Good stuff Fats :) 4/5

Love this album the songs are short and sweet. Fats Domino has a lovely voice.

Swinging :)

type of music elvis probably stole. i don’t mind rock and roll this was solid, inoffensive and enjoyable.

A lot of classics, not a lot of recognition.

8 songs, 17 minutes? HELL YES!!! These songs are simple but so, so catchy and expertly crafted. Fats' performance is soulful and organic...it sounds like you are listening live to a guy playing music he enjoys...which you are, of course. Music like this is enjoyable, doesn't overstay its welcome, and has a lot of depth in addition to being historically significant.

great music, but it's just not something i'd listen to on my own. if i was in the middle of a family gathering or a louisiana festival then hell yeah turn on fats

Simply an enjoyable listen. Good stuff.

sad, spotify didn't have half the tracks. Still good times for the ones it did have

Short n sweet from Mr Large Domino

What a voice he has !!! Really chill and while listening to it made me want to dance and there were some really great sax parts. Good album in general that's for sure.

#awesome I liked the jazzy blues type feel and I recognized some songs in the mix

What a great bright, breezy and fun album. Pioneering stuff, Thanks Fats.

Pretty cool although it can be a little bit samey.

Record slaps today. I bet it had peoples heads spinning when it was released.

++*: Blue Monday ++: Blueberry Hill, What's The Reason I'm Not Pleasing You, La-La, You Done Me Wrong, Reeling and Rocking, The Fat Man's Hop +: Honey Chile, So Long, Troubles of My Own, Trust in Me +-: Poor Poor Me 8,8/10

Woulda been crazy to be a fat guy in the past. Your name Harold? But you’re fat? Nah, you’re not Harold you’re Tubby Rollins. Fats Domino and Fatty Arbuckle really cornered the fat guy market, gotta respect it. The album isn’t streaming so I made it out of a makeshift playlist of Domino singles, and that did the trick. These are some high-grade ‘50s tunes. I do love that he had this album in 1956 and then released an album called This Is Fats literally a year later. Guy’s an absolute legend and one of the main driving forces behind the music we have today - no Beatles or Elvis without Fats!

Easy listening. Wasn’t one of my favorites but definitely one I will revisit

Kind of fun. Not an all-the-time food, but a nice place to visit.

I liked this, especially the singles. Going into it I wanted to like it more than I actually do, but overall it’s probably the low end of 4 stars.

Couldnt find the album on tidal, but the album we listened to was a treat. Fun loving happy old time stuff

A fun album with great grooves. Great sax in The Reason I'm Not Pleasing You, great piano in So Long, whistling in Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Appreciated it, would listen again though it could be difficult to match to the appropriate mood/setting.

"classic" in the purest sense. That early rock and roll. A very good time. Listen if you want that vintage vibe.

I couldn't find the original album so I went with Fats Domino Swings. Which he did. The true father of rock and roll? Definitely more so than Elvis (duh) and more fun. 8/10 4 stars.

Un taulier. Ca balance, ça rigole, le rock'n'roll de la Nouvelle-Orléans dans son état le plus pur.

absolutely slaps. can’t be a 5 bc it’s greatest hits, but damn it were they great!!

The title makes it look like a compilation album, but it isn't, as Wikipedia tells me. It's Fats' third studio album. And I expected a decent, but sort of middle-of-the-road R&B/rockabilly sort of affair. It isn't. It's a great collection of tunes. It really is, and it's a delight to listen to.

Plain ol' Rock and Roll from one of its biggest names, nothing more, nothing less. Solid 4 Stars.

Hard to fully imagine the context for this album, but it was a lovely short change of pace for today, and the playing is so easy.

Great easy listening. Hits: Blueberry Hill

Fun piano driven rock-n-roll. Enjoyed listening to this.

Love it. Favourite track is Blueberry Hill 4/5

Really fun and jazzy!

Loved: BLUE MONDAY Liked: Blueberry Hill, La La Disliked: None so far

Assuming I listened to the right songs, this is a good record, pretty timeless for something almost 70 years old. It doesnt stand out as it maybe did at one point but I liked it. Especially the first half.

Bloody marvellous

Great sound, enjoyed it.

Really good if short

I adore the vibes of this. It's a joy to listen to, very easy-going and just fun! 4⭐️

Someone said in the reviews that this is a compilation album - I don’t think it is, but Wikipedia has a few more tracks than the Spotify link that I’m eager to hear. As a big fan of New Orleans jazz and early rock and roll, I enjoyed this a lot.

Short but sweet, I liked it! It was nice to listen to in the background, and you could definitely see how this became the progenitor of rock and roll.

He puts a nice spin on the arrangements to keep blues and r&b fresh. But despite that it will sound dated to modern ears. It also sent the spotify algo to a nice place after it was done. Enjoyed this one.

Aww, I wish they still played this on the radio. 4/5

Echt leuke muziek, ik werd er helemaal vrolijk van!

4 estrelas - Blueberry Hill é um clássico. FD merece um trono!

this is something my partner would really appreciate, great for studying and generally needing down time while not being over the top beats which most music tend to have now great at it's time and still has a place now

I rally enjoyed these jams. You know you can find a video of Vladimir Putin singing Blueberry Hill? Anyway, great cruising tunes. Love that I was able to discover this!

Couldn't find the album on my streaming app but fantastic artist. Classic sound.

We all get our thrills up on blueberry hill from time to time.

Really enjoyed this

Fino, više kao background, možda neka čagica uživo.

Really nice and with such a short length did not stay its welcome, but it is the same reason I took a star off as this is basically EP length. I know things have changed since those days but yeah!

Fats brings happy memories of working in Books @ 58 on Cotham Hill. Late one Thursday afternoon Ben Dark spun up Blueberry Hill on the Bose, and it opened a window into a world of early r&b, rock n roll and and swing. This continued in earnest when I met my now wife in 2016 and we swing danced our way to marriage a few years later. This album is full of amazing tracks. I love the earlier songs in this album (e.g. Honey Chile and What's the Reason...) and it's only some of the slower tracks towards the end (like the Fat Man's Hop) which drags this down a star.

Enjoy big band/swing stuff.

This was great! Loved it!

Rock ’n’ Roll, Blues, easy listening, great stuff!! Superb jam for the weekend. Will listen to it again and probably more of his stuff. At least one of the tracks will end up in a playlist at some point. Not really an album though, cheats.

I’m actually surprised by how bluesy Fats is rather than Little Richardy or Jerry Lee Lewisy. This is the classic simple lyrics mixed with quick straight to the point playing. The songs are over quickly and sometimes before you are ready. Please note, Spotify didn’t have this particular album so I chose to listen to the Complete Imperial Singles. I’d say it’s a fair trade off. This is happy bluesy music. Production wise I’m sure it was the best they had to offer. It’s just simple music as I had said. Nothing to blow you away but enough to keep you listening.

"Thrill Yeah!" Evidently, Thrill was the preferred euphemism for Fuck back in the day. Also, do you think he'd been flagged by censors if he'd sung about a 'cherry hill' the same way he sings about blueberry hill? Spotify wouldn't let me listen to the entire album, but what I heard, I thoroughly enjoyed.

I went into the 1001 experience thinking it would be a great way to see the evolution of different styles of music. Unfortunately, the randomization of the album generator makes it a little challenging to approach it from that perspective, and Fats Domino as our 982nd album is a good example of why. “This is Fats Domino” is one of the earliest albums in the book, and “Blueberry Hill” and the rest of Fats’ early catalog are so influential in the development of rock and roll. Don’t get me wrong - I’m glad we didn’t go through the list chronologically. I don’t think I would have survived the 80s.

Some good ol' stuff

Excellent early rock and roll from a real talent

Blues-rock/jazz piano ish(?) Short and sweet little album. Very enjoyable.

ta bueno pero muy corto

I would happily listen to this any day of the week. I'm not sure it works as an album and the boogie woogie all sounds the same after a bit, but it's great stuff.

Short album, even shorter with Spotify missing 6 songs off the album. What I heard, I really liked and could go for more of. 4.5/5

Classic stuff. I always enjoy hearing the old fat man

What a smooth voice. This music seems so simple now, it’s easy to forget that it was groundbreaking at the time. Elvis was a direct copy. Spotify recommended Fats Domino Swings (1959) based on this, and that one was more enjoyable to me, but this one is a good start.

A handful of classics within the American pyshe. Always a fun time revisited the full source.

Classic and fun. Sometimes simple stands the test of time.

Thought for me to get through a whole album of this. The musicality is amazing and clearly relevant for its time. Hard to take in big doses

Toe tappin beats Greatest hits album so hard to give proper review.

This particular album doesn't appear to be available on streaming services. Needless to say, Fats was a legend, one of the architects of rock n roll.

4.5 stars. So good. Standouts are bookends "Blueberry Hill" and "Trust in Me", "Honey Chile" also good. Only track I didn't care for was "You Done Me Wrong" but the rest is just really fun swingin' rock 'n roll.

Классический рок-н-ролл, но слушается очень легко. Лучшая песня: Blueberry Hill

Loved it Snappy and fun

Good jazz, shame it was so short on Spotify.

12/25/24. Merry Christmas to some classic blues!

Great set of tracks, all classics.

Good fun and zips along.

No one can deny Fats’ influence on the course of western pop music and the songs are really quite good. This definitely deserves a spot on this list, if nothing else for how influential he was on music. This is very short, sweet, and a nice change of pace from a lot of the rest of the list. Apropos of nothing, the version on Spotify is missing about 40% of the album, but luckily I found a playlist someone made with the correct tracks.

Who doesn't like blues and piano? Nobody, correct.

Fun album, with some classic Rhythm and Blues

Yeah I loved this one Made my drive to work a lot easier for sure You can just tell he has the music in him fr

Love it. The kind of music you have already heard but were not quite aware, you just like it and that's it!

You can’t not enjoy Fats Domino.

A bit more like it! This is why I’m here! Excellent hoppy jazzy funkiness!

So much fun! Liked Songs Added: Blueberry Hill

82% Best: Blueberry Hill; What's The Reason (I'm Not Pleasing You); Troubles Of My Own; The Fat Man ('s Hop); Trust In Me Must-Hear? Almost

Gotta love a bit of Fats Domino! The man just doing what he does best, fun, foot-tapping sing-along-able music that we'll deserves the acclaim

Fun fact I learned: Fats Domino was from New Orleans!

Everyone needs to play Blue Monday on their way to work.

Amazing.

This was very nice. I really liked most of the tracks. Very jazzy and fun to listen to.

its classic blues! its classic! its 4 am! i dont know how to go to sleep anymore!

Great stuff! Perfect background music to my reading session this evening.

I don't know if I listened to the right album, I couldn't find this one on spotify but I found a playlist with the correct name and year. Either way, very enjoyable listen. Classic artist that I couldn't tire of if I tried

two best songs are blueberry hill and mardi gras in new orleans, but i ended up enjoying the whole thing quite a lot.

Hyggelig! Jeg frygtede, at den ville være monoton, men det synes jeg ikke den var

This is really good old timey music. I enjoyed it.

Absolutely classic and easy to listen to. Might not be my go to sound for music but when the mood strikes this is great stuff. Very influential for what was to come. I was only super familiar with "Blueberry Hill" but found I enjoyed most songs on here. Strange the album is so hard to track down, I had to find a compilation playlist someone had made on Tidal.

Short and sweet. Solid.

Very much enjoyed!

Why couldn't music stay like this??

Short and sweet, ya pas à dire!

Sounds really good for how old it is, probably my favorite 50's record so far. Unfortunately a lot of songs still run together, but at least I had fun trying to imitate his voice

Great vibe and foundational for almost everything we listen to today - Elvis, Beatles and all of the artists they influenced. In that light, feels like a crime to not give this 5 stars, but don’t see this being in a regular rotation if I’m being totally honest - good dinner party album though. Favorite track was So Long.

Fun, it’s a genre I’ve never really heard before

Just a very satisfying album to listen to. Smooth tunes from start to finish. It seems odd to me that they named it "This Is Fats Domino" when it isn't a compilation album.

Really enjoyable blues

Blueberry Hill will always be a certified banger. This was a nice, short and sweet sample of Fats’ career.

“Rock ‘n’ roll was here a longtime before I came along . . . . Let’s face it. I can’t sing it like Fats Domino. I know that.” - Elvis Presley, 1957 Seeing the amount of people who do this challenge but get completely filtered by classic rock and roll and rhythm & blues makes me nothing short of depressed. The New Orleans style of R&B was an extremely formative style of music, without it we wouldn't have these modern mutations of rock, RnB, soul or even ska. Fats Domino was one of the most important artists to this scene of R&B, with his soulful bellow gliding over everything he touched. "Blueberry Hill" has stood the test of time as a rock & roll standard for a reason. This Fats record isn't without flaw, but it's at the very least pleasant. With that context combined with the sheer ripple effect this thing produced in the late 50s, I can't give this any lower than a 7. Highly enjoyable, would listen again. 8/10

A very enjoyable introduction to one of the founders of rock and roll.

Very short, but very enjoyable. I really liked the piano track, and Fats Domino has a beautiful voice. It made me want to dance!

Good ol'

Great album overall. I liked it a lot. Big 4

This was my first time hearing this record, and I really enjoyed it! Had to do some work to get my hands on it (scraping the tracks together from various Fats compilation albums was the only way I could get the whole album together in one place). It feels so nostalgic for a time 50 years or so before I was even born, makes me think of my grandparents in their youth. Still, today, nearly 70 years later, I thoroughly enjoyed the record and the great musicianship and the powerful, yet sorrowful voice of Fats belting out throughout the record. Love the backing band as well. My Top 3: 3. What's the Reason (I'm not Pleasing You) 2. So Long 1. Blueberry Hill

Classic rock and blues, exactly what you think of when you imagine the 50s. I had surprisingly never heard of Fats Domino, but he's obviously massively important and influential. I actually liked his sound a touch more than Little Richard. Blueberry Hill was my favorite, but the whole album was enjoyable, if a bit repetative.

I actually really enjoyed this. Like all the older albums this list throws out

This album is so fun. A jazzy early rock album with some timeless bangers, and the fat man has some really strong pipes that really make the album stand out to me. The Vibe: It's 1956 and you and your friends snuck out to go dancing, you go to the only place left open, the band is playing some Fats Domino, and you're about to make stories you'll be telling your grandkids about.

Classic. 4/5

Sometimes I have a hard time appreciating the oldies era, I understand why it's on the list due to historical significance but often I feel it's now been improved upon so much and I can't get into it. Absolutely not the case with Fats Domino, such great catchy piano, all the tunes are so energetic and it was a great fun listen. Definitely want to look up some more Fats after hearing this.

kende wel enkele nummers, maar nog nooit een album van Fats in zijn geheel gehoord... ik was verrast dat dit zo goed was... zeker als je het in zijn tijdsgeest bekijkt... solide plaatje!

Scat is always dope

With most albums from the ‘50s, I expect a couple standout tracks propped up by generic, forgettable songs that could’ve just as easily been recorded by anyone else. This is not the case here, I suspect because Domino wrote (or co-wrote) every track. Even the weaker songs are carried by the quality and uniqueness of Domino’s voice and beautiful, expressive, perfectly phrased work on the saxophone. Almost 70 years since its release, this album still shines, and serves as an excellent example of the way blues entered popular music and laid the foundation for rock n roll. Lastly, this album sounds so much like New Orleans, it made me very nostalgic. Fantastic overall. 8.5/10

Nice, classic, delightful. A short listen, but I was sad when it was over! I let Spotify keep playing Fats for a while after.

It's hard not to like Fats. His music was quintessential in the early days of rock 'n 'roll and the influential of his music was evident in some of the big names of rock that followed. With that being said, I've have only listened to the obvious hits and songs that he's famous for, so it's nice to hear other less-known album tracks on This Is Fat Domino, his third album. Not the most complete or his most essential tracks (buy a greatest hits album if that's the case), but a good representation of what 1956 can offer. I found my thrill...!

Ma che bello

lui fortissimo e album carinissimo, best combo :)

Fenomenale sto qua, penso lo swing/Rock & roll sia appena diventato uno dei miei generi preferiti

Per me è sì.

One of the all time greats

It made me wanna get up and dance. A bit samey but in a good way

8/10. Listened to Fats Domino Swings instead since I couldn't find this album online.

Timeless tracks. Disappointing that 6 out of 14 tracks aren't available on Spotify. Even with those tracks this is a very short album compared to modern ones.

I always appreciate the versatility of jazz. Can listen to it over dinner, while working on a puzzle, or just hanging out. I was surprised by how short this album was, but it’d be a great addition to any jazz playlist

Some old school cool. Short and sweet. This style of music is never going to get me to fall in love, but it is quite enjoyable a bit at a time.

Probably my favorite name in music. The music itself isn’t bad either! On Spotify this was only 17 minutes so hard to complain. Good sound.

Very hard not to like this. So many really good songs from the early era of rock music.

Fats Domino is incredibly important to the history of rock and roll. Having said that, this might be the first "early rocker" whose album does not get a 5 from me. It's more transitional than the music of Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis or Elvis and is thus not nearly as exciting to listen to in 2024. I'm glad this was on the list though.

I enjoyed this. Nice classic blues/rock. Not all of it was streaming, though. I would have liked to hear more.

Delightful. Felt historically relevant and important. Jazz. Blues. Rocknroll. Everyone pulled from this!

Super chill oude muziek

Pretty solid but only half the album on the Spotify. Other songs are out there though from different compilations

Actually so much better than I expected. There are so many blues albums out there and I thought there was no way this would be any different, and while it does hit the same beats, it is still wonderful. It’s boppy and energizing and oh my god!!! I do prefer my albums to have a little more depth, however, and you don’t often get that from an album like this. Anyways, it’s still really good so 4/5.

Charming, energetic and full of soul. One of the many godfathers of rock n roll music Fats Domino really shines here. Super easy to listen to with very simple melodies and musicianship. Fun for the whole family.

I’ll admit that the 50’s is certainly not my favorite decade for music. While there are exceptions, most 50’s songs to me just feel the same to me. I only occasionally listen to the “oldies” at special family events, it seems. Despite this, I found Fats Domino to be among the exceptions. He had such a smooth voice for a big guys and it shines, whether he singing the slow blues tunes such as Blueberry Hill and Troubles of my Own, or the fast jumping jives such as La La and Honey Chile. This was a short but sweet package. Hope all the 50’s albums are like this. Favorite Track: Troubles on my Own Other Hits: Blueberry Hill, La La, Blue Monday, So Long, Trust in Me

Couldn’t listen to this specific album because for some reason, it’s not on Apple Music. It’s hard not to like Fats

half the tracks are missing on spotify.

Short and sweet

Make sure to get the right ‘this is fats domino’ album for there are plenty. This one has blueberry hill (great ballard) and blue monday (bluesy) and trust in me (rocking’). Fats is the real king of rock n roll according to Elvis and we owe a debt of gratitude to the pioneering r&b legend.

Would love to hear the original on vinyl in the time and place. Of course, it would have likely been banned from entering my house (shrug).

3.5 rounded up short n sweet. #bring back the 30 minute album. listening to this was rlly difficult for 0 reason highlights: blueberry hill, what’s the reason i’m not pleasing you, the fat man’s hop (aug 4 2024)

I knew a couple of his more popular songs and had never listened to an entire album. I enjoyed it much more than I anticipated.

Brilliant vintage rock and roll! I know Blueberry Hill of course, but most else is new. Walkers had a lovely voice and incredible piano skills, and the melodies are tight. Good stuff. A-

I was very confused looking for this album. Looks like it’s not on my streaming service of choice in USA, and it was unclear what was what on YouTube. I ended up listening to an essentials playlist of Fats which seemed to have a lot of the same tracks as this album. That playlist was great, very enjoyable. My apologies to Fats on the failure of my search.

I kind of prefer goofy funky Beck to sad sack Beck, but I can’t deny this has a Lee Hazelwood hazy beauty to it.

Beautifully soulful R&B/rock n' roll from the 50s. If the production values on this record (not his fault, limited by the technology), I think we'd talk a lot more about Fats Domino.

Blue Monday is a great song. The whole album is very good.

Een klassieker van de 50s. Fats Domino Swings was misschien een betere keuze geweest, maar misschien zit die er nog aan te komen. 3.9*

Really fun classic blues/rock and roll. I don't have much to say about it other than it was a fun listen.

Dimond City Vibes. Favourite track: You Done Me Wrong.

A very nice album with a few songs I recognised 4 ⭐️

Loved his voice!

This is a good Fats Domino rock and roll album containing the classic "Blueberry Hill". Some other songs ("Poor Poor Me") are also great, but it also contains some weaker ones. To really enjoy Fats Domino you can better listen to a best of album.

Really fun, catchy album. Really enjoyed this one. 7.5/10

Great stuff. Not sure if what I listened to on Spotify was actually the right album as it was only 17 mins long

My foot was tired from tapping at the end of this album, even though it is so short. An excellent early rock and roll album with obvious New Orleans influences. The songs and album are both very short, so not a lot of details to call out, but an album that just makes me happy. Favorite Song(s): What's the Reason I'm not Pleasing You, Blue Monday, Mardi Gras in New Orleans

Pretty gorgeous. Love his voice and these songs are all pretty great. Loved it, does exactly what it needs to do! 4/4.5

Fun and short!

Great! Things like this sound old but not old, if you know what I mean. Like, there is something so fundamental about this music that applies to everything that came after it that it still… rocks? Or swings? Like the old blues guys or Motown. It’s VERY classic.

Fats Domino is definitely a vital part of rock and music history, but I don't personally enjoy listening to it much, besides the novelty. So, I have to give it 4 stars, I feel, though, personally, I'd probably give it more of a 3. I just can't undervalue the impact he had by going down even that low.

8/10. I liked every single song. Voice and saxophone combo are great. But lacks creativity a bit for me to go up to 9.

I swear I didn’t realize Fats Domino was a real person until today; I thought it was a made up name from various 80s sitcoms and cartoons. A cursory look at Wiki shows that Fats was doing this well before Elvis and I think Elvis ripped him off wholesale. And he’s worse at it. I’m a Fats Domino truther now. I think it’s a bit of a cheat to use a greatest hits album in this list but I liked every track and it was mega short so hard to complain really.

Fats Domino was one of the first stars of rock 'n roll, creating songs in a New Orleans-based style of R&B. His deep, rich voice and boogie-woogie piano playing define his sound, with strong support from his horn section. "This is Fats Domino" is his breakout record, which made him a national star. It includes some of his biggest hits, including "Blueberry Hill," "Blue Monday," and "Reeling and Rocking." Domino's songs help define early rock n roll, with songs that inspired generations of musicians.

Fats Domino is an incredible musician and the music is so great to put in the background. That kind of music that works just so well while working on other things - and you can hear the influence (aka: stolen work) that artists to this day continue to emulate. A titan at anytime; a pioneer in his own.

This was just fun and interesting. I loved bopping along with it and enjoying some great 50's music.

I was a little confused about what to listen to. The Spotify link was a compilation list, and I found an album on YouTube called This is Fats that was different than the Spotify link…but regardless, totally dig him, and his influence seems to be incredibly far reaching.

Good album - I don't think it matches the energy of Louis Prima but a lot of this is still really fun tunes. The kind of thing that would be perfect on the radio in Fallout. Best Track: You Done Me Wrong Worst Track: Troubles Of My Own

Best Song: Blue Monday Worst Song: What's the reason I'm not pleasing you

Good vocals and instrumental, but not anything super unique.

This album sounds more timeless than a lot of early rock and roll, I think in part due to the New Orleans influence so prevelant on this album. I compiled the album from the Complete Imperial Singles compilation based on the track list for the original 1956 album found on musicbrainz.org.

Another Great Founding Father of Rock & Roll…and another hard to find album. So hard to find I did the next best thing and bounced around his catalog. All great songs that seemed somewhat interchangeable… “Blue Monday I’m Walking on Blueberry Hill”…

Great blues!

Soul / blues / boogie Fun, vibes, groovy Traditional boogie / blues from the OG Fats. Good selection of his biggest works and interesting to read about him. Some songs I will definitely get into the repertoire. Liked: vibessss Disliked: nothing really Production quality: high - difference between 50s and today naturally Listen again: yes

That was pretty awesome

This album was a good time. It's fun, it's upbeat, it's good vibes. I really enjoyed playing it. Unfortunately, 6 of the 14 songs aren't available on Spotify any longer so I could only listen to 8 songs, but what I did hear was really enjoyable.

Excellent!

i wish we still named musicians after their physical attributes

These are classics for a reason!!

Get on your jukebox and boogie woogie oogie babyyyy. This is legit the 1950's back to the future part of the film soundtrack and I'm here for it. Good playing/great voice.

Incredibly short, which was a pleasant surprise. I love 50s rock, reminds me of taking band in high school. Good stuff.

I had a good time listening to this. It had a few issues but it was fun.

I grew up with these old R&B and doo-wop records, and Fats Domino was a staple to my mom's record collection. There's some great songs here, and what I think is so impressive is that Fats never is in a rush to go anywhere. This is probably a testament to the quality of his band and the feel of his drummer for sitting in the pocket, but these songs find their place in your ears and they stay there. They don't speed up during choruses or slow down during bridges; they chill and groove and it's really enjoyable. So many of these songs are familiar to me and yet I haven't heard them in probably 25 or 30 years. It's been nice to go back; this has been a tough year for my immediate family of my mother, brother and I, and this has made me feel like a bit of a kid again- dancing in the basement at the end of the day with them and spinning around the room with not a care in the world or any idea about what song will come next.

All good music stems from here. Not just modern music, but everything you love from the Beatles all the way to Taylor Swift, it all was born of this. Without Fats and the like we wouldn't have had any of it. And it still gets the old foot tapping.

It's Fats Domino, how could you not love this?

I really liked this! I haven’t listened to a lot of Fats Domino, but this album had a lot more variety on it than I thought it would. You can really hear the start of rock and roll on this album. And I really liked the periods in time when you really needed to have talent to be a pop star. Really great.

Really infectious and fun, a great all around listen. Obviously it's aged by now, but Fats has a great voice and a fantastic energy in his Nola jazz performance. Fav songs: - Blueberry Hill - Blue Monday

A New Orleans legend. Lovely Record.

Good old album. Boweevil song kinda annoying but the others are good

I think this music is less 'exciting' than it probably was in the late 50's when it was released. An entire record of the same-ish 12-bar blues progressions wore a bit thin by the end. The excellent musicianship and recording was apparent the whole way through though. Esp in the vocal performance which was astounding - this would have all been essentially 'live' recordings and every performance was just NAILED.

What's not to enjoy about a bit of classic rock & roll?

Favorite Track: Blueberry Hill

Bop de bop. Super cool..

A joyful take on new Orleans rnb.

A very concise and smooth, early rock and roll album. Great, if it's your style.

Great listen

Yes. Great stuff. Exactly what I would expect from the genre and time, and I mean that in the best way.

Reminds me of my grandma

Fun! Enjoyable. 19 minute album.

Auch heute noch sehr gut anzuhören.

Short and sweet. Great voice and instrumentals. Really liked "La La"

Really solid collection of songs. His music has a nice soul to it. Favorites were Blueberry Hill and Blue Monday.

This is the music that plays when Walt and Jesse cook meth

Another joyous offering from the “Big Bang” period of rock ‘n’ roll, when blues and jazz (lovely sax on “So Long”) were colliding and all Hell broke loose. Play it loud and keep time….

While I knew a few Fats songs and am very familiar with 'Fess who followed in the New Orlean's R&B style piano, this fills in some blanks. I like the rollicking piano and the horn breaks. Different then guitar domination and closer to jazz instruments. All the songs have the rolling, rollicking , bogie woogie piano back beat. Spotify had songs blocked out, I found them with a search. 4*
