Waar een Chuck Berry en een Little Richard al een stap verder waren in het proces waarin de transitie van rock & roll naar moderne rockmuziek centraal stond, zijn mannen als Fats Domino een belangrijke schakel in de evolutie van blues en jazz stijlen naar rock & roll. Dit album geeft die kentering goed weer, waar de delta blues de confrontatie zoekt met jazz en New Orleans brass, wat een aangenaam en zo nu en dan swingend R&B album tot gevolg heeft. De opener 'Blueberry Hill' is een klassieker met de hoofdletter k, en is met deze versie wel echt toegeëigend door Fats. Het zet je direct met beide benen in Fat's French Quarter. Legendarische opener, maar ook een piek waar de rest van het album alleen maar naar op kan kijken. 'Blue Monday' doet een verwoede poging, met een resultaat waardig aan het niveau van 'Blueberry Hill'. M'n favoriete instrumental van de plaat, vanwege de opzwepende crescendo's. Voor de rest is het gewoon een aangename verzameling rhythm & blues songs, maar mist het de aanstekelijke energie waar het genre later in de 50s mee werd verrijkt. De status van Fats Domino als een centraal figuur in de bruisende New Orleans muziekscene, en zijn cruciale betrokkenheid bij het kneden van het rock & roll-genre, mag niet onderschat worden. Toch vond ik het wat moeilijker om die invloeden tijdens het luisteren van dit album op waarde te schatten, en is het werk wat minder expressief als het debuut van Little Richard. Houd wel van de sound van de 50's en zeker ook wel van Fats. Blueberry Hill is een banger en alles lijkt op elkaar dus ja, dan ben je snel voorzien. Echter... Misschien heb ik het niet aangezet op het juiste moment en de crappy YouTube playlist heeft zeker niet meegeholpen maar vind het eigenlijk wel gewoon wat saai. De nummers lijken teveel op elkaar en daar raak ik toch wat snel op uitgekeken. Ben iets anders gaan luisteren, en dat zegt vaak voldoende... 6,5/10 Highlights Blueberry Hill

Chillin with the Fat Man. Some catchy tunes. A little dated obviously but holds up if you want something to dance around the kitchen to. I prefer Fats over some of the other albums on the list from the era...2.45.
Sorry Fats, it wasn’t you it’s me…..not a fan of New Orleans’ jazz, rockabilly and the 50s more generally so I don’t think I was ever going to like this one

I understand the romanticism of the era, but jeez Fats could you not get better musos. About the only that nearly got a response from me was the horns, but then they'd drift badly out of tune and the moment was gone

This sounded like the typical 50s album. It was nice but it was pretty much the same throughout all the songs.
Fats was a vibe! Very concise album that showed off Mr Domino’s many talents. Just not a go-to style of music for me!

Another case where I'm sure he was great at the time, but it didn't do much for me listening to it 70 years later.
I can’t front, I know Fats Domino is a big deal and a huge influence on rock music as a whole, but this is grandpa music. Just not very interesting from a modern perspective. Best song: Blueberry Hill

I respect the Fats Domino hustle and 50's music in general, it's just not for me. It's slow and boring.
I understand that 1001 albums is a lot of album so fillers are to be expected, but like . . . this is 1957 chief. Little Richards, Nat King Cole, Duke Ellington, his contemporaries were pumping out far more memorable material. There's a quality to his voice, but it's not something I would revisit. 4.35/10.

13 is an unlucky number, and it appears that this day is probably the most... mixed reaction thus far. fats i've read is a great pianist, and his voice has a real nice tone and twang; i truly do feel like he could make some awesome stuff if he really wanted to. but unfortunately, this album is just not one of those great ones. typical typical typical rock from this time. half the songs sound the same to me. it's just... this isn't one i would recommend.

DK - Beautiful sounding album, really amazing to get to the roots of where R&B merged and created rock & roll. So many stand out tracks at the start for me, my favorites being 1. Honey Chile 2. What's the reason for not pleasing you 3. La La However, this album does taper off slightly after the first six tracks, slightly losing steam and having some tracks feel pretty similar to others. Another album unfortunately with lots of portions missing off streaming. I appreciate the fact that it is a tight concise album (runtime of 31 mins with the bonus tracks). Fun little album, probably won't revisit any tracks except for the top 3. Rating - 2.5/5 // Aaron - As you would expect of a 50s album, the instrumentals are always on point and a pleasure to listen to, however, the overall songs weren't that enjoyable. While I can appreciate the obvious influence as a pioneer of sound Fats Domino has had, it would be disingenuous to rate this higher than I enjoyed it which is a 2/5. This woulda been a bop in the 50s though.

This was a really difficult album to find and listen to because it's not really an album, it's a compilation. And only half of it was available to me so that sucked. But this type of music is always fun and easy to listen to. He had a certain quality that makes his seem more special than the other artists like him.
This Is Fats Domino! is the third album by R&B pianist and vocalist Fats Domino. This is a rock 'n' roll album that sold 50,000 copies in just three months. I think this album is showing its age. The music and vocals sounded dated, and one can tell this album was produced during the early transition from blues rock to rock 'n' roll. It's not the same rock that were used to today.

An audio assault in terms of engineering, very repetitive after a while... It also makes me wonder what it would've sounded like had it been recorded & produced with today's equipment...

wasn't to my taste really.
This definitely peaks with the first song, as the rest of the album is very bland proto-rock 'n' roll with no substance save for some nice instrumentals and surprises peppered throughout (the instrumental, the guitar in the final track, etc.). It certainly isn't a bad album, but considering this album is already confusing enough to track down what to listen to, it isn't really worth the end result.

Production on it is so... old. Also was only 19mins for me which was a bit underwhelming.
I'm trying to come up with something more positive than 'some of the songs are good, and he wrote them way back then'. But that's it. Listening now, this is an incredibly pedestrian meander through some old rock 'n' roll songs that is as dated as you would expect. 2 / 5 stars.

While no doubt a pioneer for rock & roll, many of Fats Domino's songs are just fine. He plays it safe by playing a tried-and-true approach to songwriting, which is mostly inoffensive. Yeah, this is fine.

I thought I would hate this, but it's not that bad. I don't like it, but I understand why people do or did. Probably more did than do, because it sounds very outdated. There's a charm to it like to little kids drawing stick figures. Favorite song: Honey Chile.

Very one-note, interesting to hear how a lot of the progressions within blues have changed and how the cliches sounded at the time vs blues now.
Really annoying to have to go search these songs individually on YouTube. Which isn't Fats's fault, but didn't help with the enjoyment of the album. The songs were okay, I guess.

I love Fats Domino just as much as anyone with functioning ears. The man deserves more love than he currently gets. That being said, albums weren't exactly where he focused his efforts. This collection of songs starts off pretty good, but the second half doesn't really stand on its own. I'd recommend the "Fats Domino Swings" album instead, which has all of his biggest and best hits (including "Ain't That A Shame"). Also, it's on spotify!

One of those albums where I can 100% see why it's on here for historical significance. It's not a bad album by any stretch but it's also not terribly interesting in a "Seinfeld is unfunny" kind of way.
Super boppy and a very bluesy album overall. This style of music would have been a staple at numerous parties and events from the late 50s onwards. Best: Blueberry Hill Worst: The Fat Man's Hop Spotify did not have the entire album, had to resort to finding the songs on YouTube to complete my listen.

Enjoyed hearing some familiar melodies and definitely understand how this kind of artist built the foundation for pop music. Would like to explore this genre and style more- clearly a lot of vocal and instrumental talent is requires. That being said it is quite simple and paired back in today's standards so I probably will not revisit often.

Interesting from a music history perspective but that's it.
All good songs but they all sound the same.
Quaint and bopping. I could imagine dancing to this in poodle skirt at a soda fountain. This is the album that “created rock and roll” right? I suppose it deserves more stars and credit for that, ahead of its time and stuff. “So Long” and “Blue Monday” were particularly Valium soft and slow and enjoyable. But ultimately rock has evolved so far beyond this it seems rudimentary.

Fav: same as everyone else’s Blueberry Hill L: Blue Monday 1 With respect to Fats and his contribution to the music world, I did not enjoy this one. It’s a cool piece of history but the recording hit a similar nerve as the Orange Juice one. The rhythm piano was especially grating to me and it was in like every song. I think part of my problem with it is just the limitations of the recording in that era. Album Cover: 2 I guess this was before they really tried but Fats has a great smile so that boosts it up. Album Title: 1.5 I guess this was also before they thought about naming albums
I do not frick with rock and roll. It's mostly pretty annoying. I like some bits that are a little more bluesy or jazzy, but then I may as well listen to blues or jazz. And the audio quality wasn't very good. It kind of hurt my ears, and not in a based noise rock or harsh noise kind of way. Maybe it's a harsh rating, idk. But I yam what I yam. 1/5

Not my era. This music is just silly. Obviously inspired by the environment this generation grew up in, post WWII when everything seemed to be on the up and up. No Cold War vibes just money, drink and women. Makes me feel sad.

Obese Domino, with the voice only a fat man could have, is ok compared to other music of the 50's. It feels a bit hokey but some catchy riffs here and there. Most songs sound the same, don't need to explore further.

Pretty boring stuff, but at least the production is shitty.
You can hear that this album was recorded in the span of five years. There’s absolutely no cohesion musically or production wise. It says “Story of Soul” in the top right of the cover. I first read it as “Story of Sad”. I feel the latter is more appropriate.

Anyone who loves nothing more than winding down their window whilst driving and belting out whatever modern music they’re into at the time is really not going to dig this. He plays a trumpet...big deal! The music is so dated and not enjoyable at all. Remove it from this list please...for everyone’s sake.
Sorry Fats Domino, you win points for Blueberry Hill but it just ain't my scene. Good Fallout music, but I can't see myself ever listening to anything but the first track again.
