Reviews (page 10 of 14)
Not bad. But a little too much electric light in the orchestra for my tastes.
This one was just fine. It was a bit longer than I wanted it to be and there were fewer words than I wanted there to be.
I don’t know. ELO have kind of an interesting sound and there is nothing wrong with this album but it all just seems rather empty and forgettable. Haven’t thought about them since I finished the Blum 20 minutes ago.
Good vibes
Strong 3. Very enjoyable album, over long
Great singles, and side 3 works as a series of linked tracks. Overall too long.
I particularly enjoyed the high energy opening track Turn to Stone which has an gorgeous pairing of basic, bubbly electronics with neat pop rock instrumentation and fun, flirty vocals. The following track It's Over also stands out in a dreamy, sophisticated and nostalgic kind of way. I'd love to be able to say that there is a track which usurps Mr. Blue Sky, but it stands head and shoulders above the rest - truly iconic. Its a strong album which is a touch too long. You could happily lose 10 minutes collectively from sides B and D.
Mr Blue Sky is pretty good and there’s some other half-decent tracks on here, but not enough to justify the length
I came in with high hopes, some good bits. If I hadn’t heard a lot of their influences this would have blown me away but I have so at times it felt like a weak imitation.
Too rock opera for me. It all feels like a soundtrack to a movie, but the soundtrack is trying to take over.
Yeah. Its elo. Beatles without any social awareness. I can definitely hear how most of the British bands co-opted a lot of these sounds too. Its good but too long and too overproduced, but that's kinda the point?
too long
didn’t really hit hard for me, but still a great album
These guys, more so than Rush, are the MCR of 70s rock. Theater Kids on drugs (presumably). You could see how this album influenced Roger Waters to make The Wall a few years later… only Roger Waters does it better imo. As confusing and as long as this listen was, it will never be as bad as KISS’s monumental failure from 1998, “Psycho Circus”. If given the choice between the two, I would pick this album every time. Even if I only half listen to it most of the way through.
Big fan of ELO’s “hits” Album was good but too many songs for an album IMO
Pretty good.
Pretty good album on first listen. Evokes a wide variety of emotions. Singing and orchestral arrangements were exceptional. Not too out there (and not my preferred style), but much better than expected.
2025-09-19: The orchestra-like arrangements produced full music, the tunes seemed varied in nature … However, for some reason I didn't get quite hooked to the album. The voices felt muffled at times, others I I felt saturated by the music … Whatever the reason, though I think I am somehow doing this work a disservice by not giving it at least a 4, I have to leave it a step lower this time.
Not a single track over 5 and a half minutes, i'm embarassed to admit that if the spotify description hadn't specifically name checked the beatles I probably would have heard it but not made the connection. This is like if the paul clone they grew in the vat popped off in 73. 3/5
Almost meh for me and way too long! Only just because of the well-known "Turn To Stone", "Sweet Talkin' Woman" and "Mr. Blue Sky" I give it the weak three stars. 2,5
Eh this was a cool album but not really my taste. 3/5
Decent pop album, really catchy and happy. Pretty good. Standout Songs: Turn to Stone Sweet Talkin’ Woman Jungle Standin’ in the Rain Summer and Lightning Birmingham Blues
Not sure why they chose to do a double album. There are some good songs but several are skippable.
Turn to Stone and Mr Bluesky I like. The rest is closer to filler.
Good
It's a cool idea to discofy Beatles harmonies. I remember how this sounded when I was 9. Somehow more dated than disco itself.
Hat mir gefallen.
Classic 70s Pop, performed at a very high level, but not exciting at all. Kind of a solid listen but in this given context, it's more on the disappointing side. Edit: after 90 albums, this is at least average in the given context
Blue Sky".
I almost finished this one, got a few more to listen to. It’s a bit too bloated, I think if I listened to one disk then the other it woudl have been better. Best song is Mr Blue Sky for sure, but I enjoyed Birmingham Blues and Turn to Stone. It would be good in the background. I think if it was shorter I woudl have bumped it to four stars.
There is some fun to be had listening to this but I find it cheesy and Mr Blue Sky is difficult to listen to after hearing it so much. Reminded me of Crime of the Century at times. 2.5
One outstanding track that everyone knows but the rest just sounds like a poor man’s Beatles to me but without the memorable tunes and added weird spacey bits. Maybe it needs a few listens. Ironically the line “soo long” in Mr Blue Sky sums up my feelings of this album. Father in law went to school with Jeff Lynne and raves about ELO. Maybe you had to be there at the time. Not bad compared to some but wouldn’t listen again.
Ah ELO. A good throwback to my youth, getting picked up by a friend's mother and listening to the greatest hits album on CD. Mr Blue Sky was a particular favourite. Brings me right back. Overall a fun poppy "rock" album, good vibes, easy and interesting listen. Not quite a 4* for me but may return eventually.
ELO’s Out of the Blue is a pop-oriented symphonic rock album. It generally lacks the raw rock energy I prefer, though they were probably a band that helped shape their era.
There's a perfect 40 minute album in this 70 minute behemoth somewhere.
Psychedelic pop music. Fun to listen to but I wouldn't return to it often.
Electric Light Orchestra's definitive album. Almost every other song is a classic rock radio staple, and ELO's pop-infused rock makes no secret as to why. Fantastic vocal performances and harmonies galore, disco-esque danceable beats and strings, as well electronic experiments are the ingredients for a very listenable album. Highlights: "Mr. Blue Sky", "Sweet Talkin' Woman", "Turn to Stone"
Mr blue sky was great. Rest is ok
p376. 1977. 3 stars. A 70s double album, so points immediately deducted, and the falsetto vocals don't help. I've always thought there is something vaguely artificial and passionless about Jeff Lynne - he so desperately wants to be The Beatles, this album is almost a parody. Having said that, there are some fabulous pop songs on here - it just outstays its welcome.
2.88
It sounds like a continuation of the same song. By the time it gets to Mr. Blue Sky, it makes an otherwise good song sound repetitive. It’s better than some of the twos I’ve rated though.
The best songs are the hits. Coincidentally, the hits are the best impressions of Paul McCartney songs. The harmonies and melodies pop, but somehow, the songs are lacking in personality. Nonetheless, this was a breezy listen.
huzzah!
Interesting sound, but not favor the melody
I was excited when this popped up today. This was an album I loved when I was young, staring at the cover art for ages and listening to all four sides of the record. Since that time I’ve enjoyed a handful of ELO songs I’d hear now and then, but none were from this album. I’d considered seeing them live the past few years but never pulled the trigger on getting tickets. Upon listening today, disappointment set in. This was not as much fun as I recalled, and I was mostly feeling bored and looking to see how many more songs were left. I don’t think it’s bad. It’s just one of those things that was better when I was younger but has lost its luster as I’ve aged and my tastes have changed. Interestingly, this is my second album in a row from 1977 where my opinions have changed dramatically from when I listened back then to now. Apparently 14 year old me is quite different than 62 year old me. Who knew?
its okay i guess i wasnt able to listen very intently, closer was good
Pink twats
3 out of 5. This album felt like an upbeat space rock opera.
decent bground. only 1 banger
Has a couple fun songs at the beggining, but ends up being way too long and most songs in the 2nd half are a bit generic. Also not usually a fan of bands adding orchestral elements to their songs to make them sound more epic, and they do that a bit here.
Väldigt höga toppar (Turn to Stone, Mr Blue Sky), men resten rätt slätstruket (dock absolut inte dåligt)
Decent.
I was surprised that I didnt enjoy it as much as I did. The hits were amazing, but there is a lot of filler songs that were a little sappy for my taste. Overall- good, but a little cheesy
A tad too long
Ok operatic 70s rock.
If you've ever thought, "gosh, I wish I could listen to Mr. Blue Sky 17 times but on 16 out of those 17 times it was a bit less good," then boy have I got an album for you! I think there's definitely an element of the one single being so typical of this group, and being so fucking great that it ruins the rest of the record, because there's good stuff here but ELO just very much have a certain style.
Couple of solid tracks, talented artists, but I'm not a giant fan.
This is a wild album. It's fun as hell but I have a limited experience with ELO so I'm not sure if it's a concept album or if they just go for it on every song.
This is too much. There were no bad ideas in the studio. They threw everything at the wall and everything stuck. I love maximalist pop. Pet Sounds is my favorite album of all time. But ELO needed an editor. Or someone to say no.
Some great songs, some really great production. Each individual song is good to great, but it overstays its welcome and feels a bit too "Samey" after a while.
Much better than I festes. Great production, fantastic arrangements, a lot of good songs, but there really is no heart. I don’t feel the songs, I just hear them
Have wanted to hear more of this band after hardly knowing much of their work. Pink Floyd meets Slade with a sprinkling of The Beatles and not sure what I think about that. 80 mins. Okay, let’s go. Pretty standard above vibe but like the switch of ‘Night In The City’, a welcome change and brings a bit more rizz. And ‘Starlight’ following in the same direction. More electronics and psychedelia. And of course the classic ‘Mr Blue Sky’ which pretty much sums up their sound. Kinda got the memo from early on and felt similar feel throughout, mostly. Similar to yesterday, it’s pretty good at what it does, but just doesn’t wow me. (3.5)
Okeeee
Would probably give 3.5 stars is possible.
sounds cool
this was very fun!! reminded me of a mix of Abba with Queen. don't know how I haven't heard of them before
Over the top sound! Huge production and instrumentation on this double album. Lots of Beatles influence seeps through. Was familiar with ELO but never took the deep dive on this one.
21/07/2025 I couldn't give it any more than 3 stars, I just didn't like the album.
3.5
I have a confession. I had a vapid hate for this band until about 10 years ago. Jeff Lynne is a genius though, effortless singer, amazing writer. Tastes change, opinions shift. Sometimes you gotta admit you were wrong. Love Sweet Talkin' Woman and of course, Mr. Blue Sky.
I had never heard this album in its entirety before today. I've heard "Blue Sky" and remember seeing this LP as a kid because the cover looks like a board game/toy that was popular when I was a kid. Just as the name of the toy escapes me so too will this album. There are 3 or 4 really great songs but the rest are kind of everything all at once and so they don't really stand out.
Some sparkle but its length ultimately defeats it as it rambles a bit at times.
Love me some ELO, but I think I'm more of a "enjoy when a song comes up in a playlist" ELO fan than a "listen to an entire double album start-to-finish" ELO fan. It sounded almost like the soundtrack to a movie I've never seen. Looking at the cover and title, shouldn't the ship be EXITING the station? "Birmingham Blues" was a refreshing return to structure after that "Whale" nonsense.
I love Mr Blue Sky. So good. Overall it’s not an album all play a ton but it’s a 3.5 for me…
I really enjoyed this album but I found that I was checking how many songs were left multiple times.
So big, so many strings, so many choirs… they can write a melody but damn dude, chill a little. Best song: Mr. Blue Sky
So I'm a huge ELO fan, BUT . . . I don't think this is one of their best albums. The curse of the double album--too much weaker material watering down the good stuff. "Turn to Stone" is a great opener, and "Sweet Is the Night" is probably the best ELO song that never became a hit, and there are some other good moments, but the two albums preceding this one--El Dorado and A New World Record--are both better front to back. I hope El Dorado is also included in "1001 Albums," because if it ain't it should be.
I’m a big fan of what I consider ELO’s signature sound. It’s so Beatlesque (Kinks, Beach Boys) but also so forward looking. I do think this album needed an edit; it felt a little baggy.
Rating: 2.8 There were a lot of good ideas here, but the execution just comes off feeling like “more is more.” The first few songs were absolutely flawless and then it just devolved into vocoder nonsense and drawn out, indulgent fiddling. I will admit I enjoyed it as a spectacle though.
Catchy stuff
3,5
Got some cool tracks. Mr Blue Sky probably the best and most recognisable
Pretty good pop rock album Has some bangers
This album still sounds great, it's full of nice, layered harmonies and lush strings. When this album is at its best it is excellent but it's too long, which ultimately detracts from the listening experience. This is a five star single album struggling to get out of a three star double album. Three stars. Would I listen again? - Only the hits. Would I buy this album? Yes, I did, on a whim. Side one 1 "Turn to Stone" - Nice fade in. Lush melodies and strings. Great chorus. Excellent. - 5 Stars. 2 "It's Over" - 3 Stars. 3 "Sweet Talkin' Woman" - Brilliant. Fantastic chorus. - 5 Stars. 4 "Across the Border" - Faster paced. Again, this has all of the elements that ELO are famous for. The Mexican sounding horns are a nice touch. Some of the keyboards sound a little dated. - 4 Stars. Side two 5 "Night in the City" - Nice opening to the song. - 3 Stars. 6 "Starlight" - 3 Stars. 7 "Jungle" - This is interesting and a little different to what has gone before. - 4 Stars. 8 "Believe Me Now" (instrumental) - Pointless? - 3 Stars. 9 "Steppin' Out" - I found this dull.- 2 Stars. Side three (Concerto for a Rainy Day) 1 "Standin' in the Rain" - 4 Stars. 2 "Big Wheels" - 3 Stars. 3 "Summer and Lightning" - 3 Stars. 4 "Mr. Blue Sky" - A brilliant slice of pop. 5 Stars. Side 4 5 "Sweet Is the Night" - 3 Stars. 6 "The Whale" (instrumental) - This just drags on. - 2 Stars. 7 "Birmingham Blues" - 3 Stars. 8 "Wild West Hero" - 4 Stars. Total 59 Average 3.50
Iconic 70s sound. Most songs sound the same though. "Mr Blue Sky" is a classic.
Some fun melodies and a few bangers. Enjoy the ELO vibe, but so many songs on the album and not enough highs/differentiation overall. 2.5 if I could.
This is a fun album to listen to, although I don't think I would ever play it again all the way through. Maybe if I was cleaning the house or cooking or something on the weekend when I could have something playing in the background that I don't really need to pay attention to. It's great for that. Some interesting parts here and there and the whole thing is pretty atmospheric. Although a little cheesy and dated sounding now, I can appreciate that this was a brand new kind of music in 1977 so there is something to be said for that. 3/5
It was a fun listen while me and the boys had a board game day. 7/10
I like the hit singles I’ve heard off of the previous and subsequent albums better than the ones here. Still, the album has plenty to offer in its deeper cuts. Not sure it needed to be this long, but I could see myself getting into this more with more listens.
A strong album with several solid hits. A soundtrack to a good portion of my 70s childhood. The only problem is that it all sounds like ELO - as, on one hand, it should. But this isn’t necessarily what you want. Some great tracks, excellent production, but the musical ideas are - in the end - repetitive.
Quality boomer vibes - would’ve given it 2.5 stars if an option - I got really tired of it and wanted it to end a little over halfway through though. Double LPs shouldn’t exist
If this album had been half the length it would be an easy 5. There's a lot to love here, and every track is passable at worst, but there's just so much of everything.
Very theatrical. It was a fun listen and I could see putting this on, but it's still not really my thing. Wish I could rate it 3.5.
This is fun. Smooth and funky vibes. The Beatles doing ABBA. A bit of Pink Floyd abs Bowie, too. The track Jungle is great. And one of those ‘Oh, it’s them!” moments with Mr Blue Sky. Sweet is the Night also great.
It already gets a bonus star for having a spaceship on the cover. The hits off of this one are the hits for good reasons. But...70 minutes...that's a lot of ELO in one serving. I feel this would have been stronger as a single album. Granted, I seem to say that more often than not so maybe that says more about me than the artist.
It was ok but a bit boring
Better than I thought it would be
I’d forgotten how many great tunes were on this album 👍
Catchy, kind of fun, enjoyably poppy, but starts to grate after four sides. If you’re looking for some disco classical prog-pop, this is probably the band for you. But I’m not really looking for that. Still, this album did not make my day worse.
Some decent tunes, crap band names
Sehr poppig, bisl beatlsy, pleasant
thought this was going to be on of those "damn what have I been missing" moments. maybe went in with too high of expectations but didn't find this to be too noteworthy other than the hits.
Pop-influenced, good harmonies. Didnot like vocal sound mixing on some songs.
Beatles inspired yacht rock? I’m here for it. There are some bangers on this album. I particularly liked “Jungle”.
Its like an orchestra of electric lights.
Cool album.
Look, I like the Beatles as much as the next guy. There’s some undeniably sublime stuff here and great disco slanted production, but when I want to listen to the Beatles, I’ll just listen to the Beatles. Standouts: Sweet Talkin Woman, Jungle, Summer and Lightning, Mr Blue Sky (obviously).
Definitely a lot of really catchy songs on here, but a lot of them are catchy precisely because they plagiarized from existing hit songs. In isolation, I would absolutely be giving this a 4 or possibly even 5 stars, but knowing that good chunks of this album aren't original brings it down to 3 for me.
Beatles-like, too well-behaved for me, samey.
Sometimes super fun and sometimes just too damn cheesy.
Steppin' Out, Mr. Blue Sky (Thanks GOTG). Very cinematic and groggy. Fun, but it dragged on a bit more than I'd like.
I guess there’s a reason everyone alive in the 70s has a copy
Yeah. This is ELO. The songs that hit are catchy as hell. The misses aren’t really misses per se, but extra noise for the signal to pass through. That is to say, there’s just a lot. Still, the signal is catchy AF.
The incestuous love child of the Beatles and Pink Floyd. Loved the stringy motifs. Typical English writring about the weather... And space...
Hello Mr. Blue Sky is like the one of these things is not like the others surprise track but still overall ok
Interesting, layered musicianship and I enjoyed hearing the different influences throughout. Was not familiar with ELO’s sound so this was a nice surprise! And “Jungle” is a banger.
White guy music
Very orchestral. Very long. But mostly entertaining.
If you like Queen but thought they rocked too hard, this is the band for you
ELO has a pop sound then mixes in mechanical or outside sounds that is a type of Pink Floyd touch. Problem is the musical style cannot support these mixes. That being said, there are some good tunes from this album. I was glad the album was over at the end. 3/5
Very 70s. 6/10
Some really great symphonic pop here but probably could have been edited to a single disk. A strong 3 for me
You can clearly hear the influence of the Beatles, David Bowie and Queen and it's well-made, but it's also just a bit too much of everything. I can't put it in words, but the songwriting just doesn't click with me overall. It's not at all a bad album, and parts of it are actually really nice, so I'm torn. But what the hell did they think in "Night in the City"? That song is annoying af.
Listened whilst driving through the countryside on a sunny Sunday afternoon - it was nice. Probably listen again next time the suns out 3/5
They all sounded the complete same , like I liked the songs but I won’t like think “ oh yk what is gonna pass this time that I’m gonna enjoy, ELO” like I’m good. But like it was average. I think my review is a hot take .
#580. This is perfect mom rock. Well, I guess grandma rock at this point, but you know what I mean. 3/5: decent
There is a lot of falsetto.
Some crackers but could be half the length
It's as if someone took a Beatles record and made it interesting. I like this a lot. The strings are used to terrific effect and there's a great range of sounds and production quirks thay makes it an engaging listen. It peaks with the opening 'Turn to Stone', and it's afflicted with the banal romance vernacular of the era (how many times does the word 'baby' occur on this album?), but I'd be happy to come back to this. A high 3*.
This a busy album, but I’ll be damned if it didn’t put a smile on my face. There’s a lot going on in the production, and it can be overwhelming at times, but the tracks are bright and infectious. Personal favourite for me was Wild West Hero. If anything it’s nice to delve just a bit deeper into ELO’s catalogue and be pleasantly rewarded, rather than listen to the same four or five of their overplayed radio staples that kind of do my head in a bit. ✨
Always thought ELO was a ‘peppy Pink Floyd’ . Melodic and atmospheric at times though some some of the chorus’ sounded like disco unfortunately
Theatrical production, interesting and new, but somehow not super appealing
- A clear example of overindulgence. There are some wonderful tracks on here (namely "Turn to Stone" and the beautifully smooth "Sweet Talkin' Woman") and thank God they are near the front or else they would be buried in the hour-plus of this unnecessary double album. - ELO often has a cool sound, particularly with their clean vocal harmonies and use of additional, frequently odd instrumentation. But then they fall into these repetitive traps -- looking at you, "It's Over."
I was excited for this album, I like a few ELO songs and I think they sound great. Maybe I’d built it up too much but it didn’t hit the way I’d hoped. The album sounded great and everything was well done but the songs on it just didn’t feel special. Mr Blue Sky is a banger though, I love that song!
I like Jeff Lynne's work with the Wilburys. Mr. Blue Sky is a damned good song, and the production is immaculate. Still an interesting exercise in having good melodys, and good playing, but limited soul. So - heavy beatles influence, and sounds like them occasionally but doesn't hit the same. Vocoder hasn't really aged well either nor the sound effecty/gimmicky jungle mariachi stuff.
A totally fine and fairly unique sound, but it gets pretty repetitive after a few songs.
ELO has a sound so unique you can tell it’s an ELO song within the first 3 seconds. The issue becomes all the songs have a similar sound, so if you’ve heard two or three ELO songs, you’ve heard their breath of music they can write. Instead of a double album, this could have been four songs and I wouldn’t feel like I missed anything.
Was fun but boy did it get old by the end.
Fun vibes? not really traditional music. i guess... meh in the end
Ok
5.5/10
Another “my favourite bands’ favourite band” thing. Hard not to hear entire templates for albums by Grandaddy and the Lips. Likewise, I’m curious how The Soft Bulletin and Sophtware Slump play for 25 year olds today the way ELO did for me when I was 25-26. Lots of thoughts about Jeff that I won’t go into detail about here, as they aren’t terribly unique. This is a pretty good break-up album as those things go and as with nearly every other double album does not justify its length. Jeff finding true brilliance as a producer/co-writer/arranger with other classic rock dudes says a lot to me about the challenge he set for himself being a huge Beatles fan: he just never had a Lennon (even if he eventually had George). I like a lot of ELO and am always charmed to come across another melody of his I’d forgotten, but the reason I tend to forget ELO is the lack of an edge, the actual rock part of RNR. Keepers: bsky, sweet talkin woman, turn to stone
Ehh, fun album but didn't blow my socks off, I like Mr Blue Sky tho
Seriously too long and too boring. The well known tracks are okay (I can't be bothered checking which were actually singles), they get trotted out for radio play to this day. I see all these reviews claiming how much they love Jeff Lynne. well, however much that is, kid, it's nowhere as much he loves himself.
Good album, but tedious to get through. ⭐⭐⭐ Best track(s): Mr. Blue Sky
Probably a 3 but a high 3. It's enjoyable music but an hour of it does get old. Mr. Blue Sky is a bop though, and I liked the sound through-line from Steppin' Out to that. And Birmingham Blues weirdly didn't sound like ELO, but I did like the sound on that one.
Inoffensively okay. I would rather listen to the Beatles, Queen, or Pink Floyd than all of them at the same time. Mr Blue Sky does go hard. Musicianship and arrangements are so good and the talent is obviously there but my enjoyment sadly wasn’t. Steve rating: 4.5/5
During the course of this hour long double album I went from "wow ELO rules this is sick" to "wow they really have one trick don't they, I'm getting bored" to "ok nvm I'm starting to get it this is cool again" to "oh hey Mr. Blue Sky this song rules" and then back to "idk how much of this album I needed to hear, I got it after song, like, 3" and all of that actually averages out to a 3 out of 5. I have turned album rating into a science and I may be the best to ever do it. You're welcome, review reading public. Jeff Lynne sometimes sounds like Jimmy Fallon's parody of Barry Gibb on those SNL Barry Gibb talk show sketches, I think that might be an insult?
A good album but a bit too much of the times
Good stuff here.
A lot going on. They've thrown the kitchen sink at it. Probably sounded incredible at the time.
Some bangers. Light listening. Vibe like Queen
I thought I had never heard of this album before, but it turned out that I had heard one of its songs, 'Mr. Blue Sky'. I have no idea where I came across this song, but the melody is so familiar that I can easily hum along. I'm happy to meet a song I knew already while playing this random album. I also love the album cover!
Keith - 6/10 Ross - 6.5/10 Caylum - 7.5/10
Not my thing but cool, interesting mix of sound.
I was on the fence with this one Parts of the songs were so so good. Mr Blue Sky 10/10 🔥 Other parts were either too weird, or boring. This album was also really long. It was just a bit all over the place I appreciate the music and talent, but I don't think its my cup of tea 3 ⭐️
uf sí pero
Couple great songs, it is ELO afterall. Whole album is a super chill and lighthearted vibe and would be great to listen to while doing something else. I would probably prefer to listen to ELO's greatest hits cause they've got enough amazing songs for an entire album's worth.
You know music that sounds all great and innovative but still feels a bit forced? That's ELO for me sometimes. This album has many interesting elements though so you should give it a try. You might like it more than me.
Solid album despite it not being my genre
3.5 for me blue skies
Knew more song than I thought I would. Its a solid okay.
Pretty good and enjoyable just not very special to me. I enjoyed listening to it once but I don’t feel like I’ll ever need to listen to it again.
Fun album with a couple bangers but too long 3.5
I want to love ELO but there’s something about them that just doesn’t quite add up for me. Everything about them is up my alley - layered instrumentation, upbeat catchy melodies, a little weirdness. But for some reason, I just like it, I don’t LOVE it.
Never heard about them, nor their most known songs. Not really my thing.
Prog Rock? Ne, Prog Pop? Bombast-Pop? Deshalb wohlwollende 3*
Enjoyable
Sweet… maybe too sweet. A little long and same-y throughout.
An enjoyable album but far too long for what it is, I can't be in a good mood for this long. The arrangements and production here is great, with some deep cuts that I wish I had heard before diving into this. The hits here are great, and unfortunately this also means that listening to this can sort of feel like you're just waiting for Mr Blue Sky to come on. Luckily the album really picks up on sides C and D! I couldn't see myself eating a tub of cotton candy, nor could I see myself regularly listening to a whole double LP of ELO. Highlights: Turn to Stone, Starlight, Big Wheels, Summer and Lightning, Mr Blue Sky, The Whale
It was good but needs editing, too long. some great standout moments of course Mr. Blue sky.
I had really high hopes for this one after hearing the first track, Turn to Stone. To this point, I had only ever heard Mr. Blue Sky and this song captured a similar vibe that I was excited to get more of. While there a some moments that reached the same feelings, I didn’t find this to be the case across the board. This album is too long I think. After about song 3-4 I felt that I already kinda “got it”. I’m sure the orchestral/symphonic aspects of this album would have been fresh and interesting at the time, and it still sounds very nice, but I don’t feel ELO did enough with this styling to fully justify a double album runtime. There’s a poetics and pop sensibility that is heavily inspired by the Beatles (especially Paul McCartney) in the songwriting. There’s an overall attention to pop song that makes each of these songs sound like they could have been smash hits. Mr. Blue Sky is still legendary and a great song worthy of that status. It was able to bring up many overall enjoyment of the record, but not enough for me to think this is something I’ll revisit often as a complete album.
Definitely too long. I love Mr Blue Sky and I could quite happily listen to this as background music but just too long.
It wasn’t bad but not great either. Over an hour is too much as the music kind of sounded the same after a while. Couple of good songs tucked away on it.
Fairly samey for me although do love the orchestral element.
I really enjoyed this actually. I’ve only heard one or two songs previously from this band and never thought to really delve into them but there are defo some standout tracks on this one. There are songs I wouldn’t really go back to hence a 3/5 but it’s a solid sound and enjoyable listen for the most part.
Mr. Blue Sky is one of my favorite songs. Absolutely always brightens up my day no matter how shitty the world is when I hear it. That being said, this album would be great if it were a single instead of a double.
I like this album, but there are better ELO albums. Mr Blue Sky and Turn to Stone were the highlights.
It’s fine…probably could have used some editing
I don’t dislike ELO but they tend to grate on me after a while
This takes me back to middle school and awkward school dances. Big hair, flared jeans, girls dancing with their friends, boys standing on the sidelines and ELO playing on the speakers. I've never been a fan of ELO, but I tolerate listening to them for the 70's nostalgia. Plus, I've always thought this album cover looks like a Simon electronic light game.
There’s a couple of stand out songs on this album. But like most double albums it’s entirely too long. Way way too long. Probably a 3.5 but I’m rounding down because with some editing this could’ve been a high 4 star album.
Nice album to listen too, and Mr Blue sky is a fantastic song. On a personal note, my mom loved elo, so they'll always have a place in my heart.
While many of the songs here are catchy pop numbers, I just have never been able to find any soul in ELO's music. Jeff Lynne's production style never varies from tune to tune or artist to artist. Somehow, he was so influenced by the Beatles that he made George Harrison sound like ELO.
Its fun. Its a bit rock and disco, with a lot of retro synth. I like "Turn to Stone" and "Birmingham Blues", but overall its not really my thing. I couldn't listen to the whole album in one go and skipped a few songs.
This was fine. Jeff Lynn has a very distinctive sound, so all of the songs have a very similar quality to them. Also, the running time is a tad excessive. I don't hate it. It's nice to have ELO peppered throughout other 1970s classic rock, but listening to 70 minutes of it straight through is too much. 3 or 4 songs is all I need.
This is OK to listen to. There are some fun songs, but man the sound is the same for every one of them. It got old quickly for me.

Mostly better than I expected but goes on for far too long
Quite an interesting record, because it's a mix of beatlesque rock and orchestral pop with a bit of broadway here and there. There are unique layers and the production is lovely. I can even heard the later Traveling Wilburys in this sound. However, it's a tad too long and a bit too theatrical for my taste. I liked it, but I liked my 4-star albums bit more. So it's somewhere in between.
They've got a couple of tracks that are good, one of which is on this album. It's okay, okay minus. I'll go a soft 3/5.
this was fun…it’s obviously over the top and very, very silly but in a way that feels more interesting and listenable than, say, queen. i was bopping along quite capably to a few of these. i wouldn’t reach for it in my own time but it’s fine.
Good, but every song the same
Big solid 3. Mister Blue sky is a high note.
2.5 Beatlesque songs covered in an excess amount of 70's production layers. Didn't really do it for me
fun but overall not my thing
I’ve always said, somewhat in jest, that Jeff Lynne is kind of like Paul McCartney if McCartney had no taste. Every song on this album is pretty good and there are bangers like Summer and Lightning and Sweet is the Night. It’s hard to fault ELO with being a bit extra when that’s just baked in and is what they are going for. What it comes down to is music that I certainly enjoy when I hear it, but is rarely what I’m in the mood for. If I’m trying to assess this album on its own merits, though, I can’t say there is any way to argue that they don’t achieve exactly what they set out to do.
I enjoyed all of the robot voices but overall it was kind of boring.
I guess I could see why a more overblown version of the Beatles could appeal to folks, but it's not my cup of tea.
A lot to like here, can’t help but enjoy some of these songs. Sweet Talkin’ Woman is an enjoyable number. Album far too long though and a few songs that don’t hit the mark but still a pleasant listen.
Someone likes Paul McCartney! Not bad, but a bit too 70s and long for me. Top track: Mr. Blue Sky
There is the theory that dogs looks like their owners (or vice versa). I think ELO are by far the premium case of the lead singer (Jeff Lynne) looking more like what I imagine his fans to look like than what you imagine he does. As for the music itself, I’ve always wanted to listen to an ELO album, so I got my wish. My overriding feeling is it’s feels ambitious and very well played and produced but just far too ‘nice’ to be anything other than a completely inoffensive listen, with the odd bit of excitement on the occasional song. It sort of manages to be orchestral, prog and pop but not, and the sum of the parts don’t elevate anything spectacularly. I’ll just stick to Mr Blue Sky in future, that sums the lot up without needing the album.
Felt like the whole album was just an intro for blue sky. Still jams tho. Birmingham Blues oh baby
Nice one!
Ihan mielekästä kuunneltavaa, mutta ei sykähdytä eikä mitään yksittäistä biisiä halua kuunnella useasti uudelleen.
Lustig.
I only remember this band from Don't Bring me Down, and the giant UFO stage show photos that awed every kid in 1979. WAY more Beatles-esque than I remember. Sounds like a lot of Bowie influence in there too. Overall, I don't dislike it, but the whole "let's add orchestral instruments to rock" just doesn't get me going.
Zany and transporting
….“too ridiculous to take seriously and too serious to be ridiculous”…. I love some of these songs, clearly a work of mastered craft - but there are too many divergent attitudes and ideas going on here to love this as a whole. The back half really saved it for me.
This would be a 3 1/2 if half stars were here. I didn’t dislike it, but too many tracks for not enough wow factor.
Quite enjoyable, but dweeby as fuck. Surely ELO were never cool? Mad to think what happened to the cellist. If you don’t know, watch ‘Upright’ with Tim Minchin. Great series!
Legendär, aber nicht meine Lieblingsmucke
Good stuff, high-quality space rock
There are some classic ELO tunes on this album. I've always liked "Mr. Blue Sky".
5/10 Wait...there are songs other than mr blue sky on this album? NO? no there aren't. 12-23-2024
This was quite fun - definitely went on too long though. Super cheesy, bouncy, lots of energy (though it's hard to keep up that energy over such a long time). Think it would be really fun to see live (less so now than 20-30 years ago), but listening to it on my own makes it feel a bit lightweight. A very comfortable 3/5.
I am familiar with ELO and their iconic songs but I have never been a huge fan. I have never listened to this album in its entirety before. It's pretty good but is a little too much over-produced pop music for me.
I have no thoughtful or academic review of this album, but it's so weird and I loved it.
This album had a lot of highs and lows for me. Overall I dug it, just wish it was a little more consistent. I'd probably pick and choose which tracks to listen to again as opposed to the whole thing. 3.4/5
Liked this less than I expected. I never really put together how much they were aping the Beatles. Still, a couple bangers on this. Just samey overall. 3/5
Not a huge ELO fan, but I do think that this works pretty well for a double LP. Keeps the energy alive and hardly overstays its welcome. Has a good chunk of their best songs. C…+?
Was digging it
I remember my parents playing this record a lot growing up. Solid 70's rock.
There were enough good songs on this record for me to give it 3*. It's a lot of listening with a lot of similar production, though. A regular album would have been a better album.
Generic poppy ahh but still pretty good, instrumental was the best
Some okay album cuts on here, but mostly I’m realizing why the songs that made it to the greatest hits were Turn to Stone and Mr Blue Sky. The rest of the songs range from tolerable to exhausting. It’s not that there’s anything necessarily bad on here, just a lot of filler. Okay wow, I just looked and this is their seventh album. No wonder there’s so much filler. Crazy that their biggest hit was on here though.
temazo mr blue sky
ELO. Man, they were an interesting blend of the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Yes and Bob Seeger. Knowing my pleasure for Progressive rock I feel like I should’ve liked this album better but there was something about it that just didn’t grab me. The talent: obvious. The orchestrations: excellent. But after two listens there weren’t any songs that I felt like listening to a third time. Jungle and Sweet Talking Woman felt like they could have come off Sgt. Pepper. I don’t hate this album. I could listen to again. I’m not sure I would go looking for it and I can’t even tell you why.
This is a fun album. There are several good songs on here and if some of the ballad songs were dropped it would make this an even better album. Sweet Talkin Woman and Mr. Blue Sky are the hits on here but I enjoyed several of the other uptempo songs. Are ELO overrated, underrated, or properly rated? Clearly Jeff Lynne was respected by the greats (or he was the funny dude that could score them drugs). How else could you explain his membership in the Traveling Wilburys. I'll likely try to revisit this one again.
An enjoyable listen - nothing revolutionary here, but pleasant
Good, vocal layering gets old after awhile but enjoyable. Best track - mr blue sky
Might grow on me with repeat listens.
Good solid albulm
Not ELOs best album but soild
Never listened to these guys before. It's okay, a little light and corporate-sounding, as another reviewer stated. Prob will never listen to this again, not because it was bad, but because there is just nothing to hook me.
Genuinamente casi me duermo. 60
I've barely been aware of ELO. It's... whatever, but I don't think I need more of it.
This was pretty fun, though long! It also has a lot of Beatles to it, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but 74 minutes is a lot.
It felt like a strange, orchestral mashup of the Beatles and Pink Floyd, but stripped of the originality of both. Not that bad, but a bit too long for what it offers.
I like Jeff Lynne's vocals and there's some good songs on the album but I'm damned if I can hear them properly underneath the dense shiny production. It's like they're trying too hard to impress. Much like the cover artwork, there's something a bit sterile that puts me off ELO. Think I'll stick with my Idle Race LP's.....
No need for a double album here, it's so long that I started to go delusional, and I misread the subtitle of side 3 as "Cornetto for a Rainy Day", which may be my new favourite phrase!
Actually had a copy of this back in the day but not listened to it for decades. I enjoyed giving this a listen. I remember most of the tracks very well and it’s great pop music. Think it just about deserves to be on the list
High school memories, oh well, I don't really like it much but 3 stars for the memories
Very likeable, and when it is good, it is really damn good. Just the sort of sound you would expect from a band with "electric" and "orchestra" in the name. Theres a bit of queen and a hint of ABBA. I think some of the more old school rock and roll tunes and some of the more dancy tracks fall a bit flat, however. Best Song: Mr. Blue Sky / Turn to Stone Worst Song: Across the Border
good stuff, a little too long
Never met anyone that disliked ELO, but then again never met anyone that was all in on ELO either. Happy, upbeat, catchy radio music - it’s good for what it is. Certainly better than most of the junk in this list, it’s just not on my “bring it to the island” play list.
Not really my genre, but they did it well, enjoyed the musicianship but not so much the songs
ELO had a distinct and unique sound, nothing else like it in the 70s. Strong start with Turn To Start, It’s Over, and Sweet Talkin’ Woman. Just heard Mr Blue Sky on the radio - always liked that one. Standing In The Rain was an unknown gem on this listen. Album runs a little long and songs become similar, but all good. Comes in at (2.9*s)
Signature ELO sound that I was expecting but don't know if I needed 70 minutes of it. Still a good listen, starts off strong, some surprises I wasn't familiar with. A bit overproduced but accolades for all the layering (strings, chorus, orchestra, authentic rock). I like the cover art and overall triumphant feel of this. Comes in at 2.95.
ELO is such a great band and although I'm against it as a collector, you can get by with just their greatest hits album. Def a few on here and some lesser known good ones like "Standing in the Rain" and "Birmingham Blues" but also a bunch of filler. "Jungle" did come out of the blue and I liked it. Felt like a journey through the star system at times and you can feel the electric light coming from the orchestra. Gotta give Jeff Lynne credit for coming up with such a complex rock band. I'm in for more from ELO if the list provides...2.85.
It's got a lot of the signature Jeff Lynne ELO sound that I enjoy but I don't need 70 mins of it. This would be better served as a tighter single album. Trim a bit of the fat and it would be a really strong entry. As it is, its still a good album, just a little bloated. Despite the complexity of album some of the songs start to sound the same after a while. As much as I'm a fan of ELO I mostly stick to the greatest hits, but this is still a solid entry deserving of the 1001. 3.02 stars
A double album is a lot of info. Aside from the hits, “Whale” was the only memorable song on the album. Of course I heard a lot of other influences in here, including The Beatles (obvs) and The Who’s Quadrophenia.
A fun and dense double album that pays homage to psychedelic-era Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Queen. Some great songs on here including ‘Big Wheels’, ‘Across The Border’, and especially ‘Mr. Blue Sky’. Musicianship is very high level. The production is cutting edge for 1977 but also extremely busy with many unnecessary string flourishes, Mellotron choirs, and sound effects that often just take away from the songs. Also it’s just way too long with not enough great songs to justify it. Maybe this is an album that grows on you with repeated listenings but I think I’d like it better at half the length. 3.5 / 5.
It's really hard to release all this music at once and have it be great or even good from start to finish. I enjoy me some ELO, but this is suffers from the same thing just about every other double album suffers from. There are some bangers, and I will always sing Mr Blue Sky at the top of my lungs when it comes on, but most of this could’ve been left for the 50th anniversary deluxe edition or whatever.
Fine. Probably not going to listen again
ok
Mr. Blue Sky is a banger...the rest is meh. Essentially a Beatles tribute band.
Too much over produced pop for my taste. That being said if you are an ELO fan you will probably really like this.
liked songs: most of them This is such a happy, uplifting double LP. It's good, but it does run a little long and some of the songs start to sound similar. 3.5
Good!
Zesty tunes.
The songs on here are essentially a new wave version of The Beatles. There are some catchy beats, and fun tunes, but nothing too mind-blowing here. Favorite Song: "Mr. Blue Sky"
Good but I would much rather just listen to David bowie or the bealtes.
This was fine. It’s another lame name for a band that I don’t want to listen to. Heavily influenced by the Beatles but who is not.
ELO is a puzzling band. Their signature sound is impressive in small doses but overwhelming and tiresome in its consistency, always harkening back to the Beatles to an downright uncomfortable extent. Moreover, Jeff Lynne too often grabs from the same bag of tricks (that's enough compression, thank you very much). When they break with the formula, they're a much more interesting band, but Lynne doesn't allow for it very often. None of my favorite ELO singles are on this album, and the deep cuts simply aren't moving me. I imagine if I were a greater audiophile, this would be a higher review from me, but it taps out at 2.5/5 stars.
I liked this enough. Inoffensive at the very least. I don't think I'll return to most of it, but the parts that are good are quite good, and the album's biggest crime is its length.
Quite a contrast to yesterday's In Utero. Part of the charm of this list, but doesn't actually do any favors to Out of the Blue.
Yeah, pretty decent. Not my favourite, but heard worse.
I didn't listen to this album. I could NOT bring myself to. Wrote a poerm about this song once though THE WIND WANTS TO TAKE ME FROM THE GRIPS OF THE EARTH AND INTO THE BLUE SKY. IT’S A FRENZIED, FINAL BREATH OF NATURE, THE ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA ARE PLAYING THE END OF THE SONG, THE END OF EVERYTHING, PLAYED OUT BY THEM, I’M GOING TO DIE, EVERYTHING’S MASSIVE AND IT’S ALL EVERYWHERE, ALL THE TIME. OH BROTHER, GIVE ME A BREAK! THE SONG ENDS AS I ARRIVE OUTSIDE MY HOUSE. SKIES CLEARING. RAINDROPS ON DOUBLE GLAZING. AN HOUR LATER, A RAINBOW, BARELY REAL, APPEARING IN THE SKY. 3 stars innit
yeah i mean its fine. like i dont actively dislike it but i wouldnt go out of my way to listen to it. i like 'starlight' for its interesting chords, but really disliked 'jungle' - mainly because it was shit - didnt mind 'big wheels', 'mr blue sky' would be worse if it wasnt nostalgic
I liked this but did not love it. I kept waiting for it to really get better. On the three side of a 3.5.
Like it 3/5
Some absolute gold on here, but it's a little too long.
I have a soft spot for ELO, I like their signature orchestral/rock mash-ups! I'm giving this one 3 (One full star for the very 70s album art!)
Lots of classics but a few completely forgettable ones too.
Nice enough, at times a Queen kind of vibe. One of the many albums here that just kinda fades into background music, in a not unpleasant way.
Way too long. The best are the beginning and end songs. The middle are cheeks and just filler. 3.5
It's defo got a vibe. There is something missing, and there are better ELO records. But Mr Blue Sky bumps it up a whole star rating. Summer and Lightning and Turn to Stone other highlights for me. 5.5 / 10
Rocky and synth, it was alright
good!
Big, familiar sounds. I don’t love it, but don’t hate either. They’d make a decent, overpriced Vegas act at the Sphere.
I have a soft spot for Mr Blue Sky, so it was already on a winner. A little too over produced for my liking but can’t deny the talent
Fun album! Would listen again. Reminded me a bit of Flaming Lips!
Peaks and troughs but good.
Very odd composition, but you have to realize some of these songs were grouped because they were together on several tapes.
Electro Beatles….
Not a big fan of ELO and was unenthused about listening to a double album (who told them they could do that?). As it turned out… still not a big fan. BUT, if more of this album sounded like side 4 (the last four songs) I would be more interested. Rounding up to 3 stars and a math teacher would probably tell me I should be rounding down…
