Reviews (page 2 of 13)
I get they are hugely influential but damn, this was boring. I am not a fan of early metal. It all sounds the same and doesn’t say anything. 2
I don't doubt that this album is notable and influential. I acknowledge that the vocals are powerful and technically impressive and that the band shreds. But I honestly don't feel like this album is actually good. I almost enjoyed Prowler and Running Free but found Strange World completely cornball and Charlotte the Harlot more offensive in its lack of originality than in its harlot-shaming. My feeling is that I enjoyed Number of the Beast more than this but, checking my records, I see I gave that album a 2. This isn't a 1 but maybe a 1.5.
Not my scene, but it is interesting that I never listened to this before considering how prevalent their fans were in the 1980s. I am told their later stuff is more developed and the singing is better. . . I can see how they influenced later metal genres, but again, this is not my cup of tea. There is a bit of sameness to each song and the tone of the guitars is grating and unpleasant. The singing is British post-punk and pre-hair metal chic. I find it to be unlistenable even as workout music. . .
Metal is gay
You cant say I didnt try. I dont get the appeal!
nope.
My first reaction on seeing today’s pick was ‘oh God, no’. This is not my type of music, but I was willing to give it another go. I am sure they are talented musicians and have made a lot of money making a lot of people happy. However, this was just an affront to my ears. Screechy guitars and raspy voices. Just Horrible. To quote a later album - Run to the hills.
Truly painful to get through. Did not enjoy
Fikk ikke hørt hele albumet pga sykdom. Hørte et par sanger, det holdt i masse vis 😂
My best friend at secondary school used to make me Maiden tapes. I tried to like them then, and I thought I would try again, l see if I like them any better now. I don’t. Not the worst metal band I have ever heard but that isn’t saying much. Lots of guitar, none of it of much interest to me.
Mediocre
Its of no artistic value whatsoever. A little white guy moaning about the plight of the little white guy.
no.
So this is the band from those hoodies (you know the ones) they are black, have an album cover on the front and and stink of B.O. I guess if your into iron maiden then you are into IRON MAIDEN because every song is the same.
This is the sort of music that would come on Kerrang! when I was 14 and I'd switch to Scuzz. It's repetitive, boring and predictable - and that's coming from someone who listens to and actually enjoys Techno music. I also hate the scary people they use on their album art. For what was meant to be the golden age of vinyl artwork they really shat the bed on this one.
just silly.
Not a fan of the genre
80’er rock/metal, tempofyldt, gritty
Nope, don't like it.
Oh, this one is close to my heart. I grew up very familiar with Iron Maiden since my dad could be considered a member of their top fan club. We listened to "Somewhere Lost in Time" on the home stereo cassette system, we listened to "Piece of Mind" in the car to and from school, we blasted "Powerslave" and "Fear of the Dark" while at the lake or playing in the back yard. Iron Maiden is a very potent band in my life, and I won't deny it had a huge influence in my musical taste. This album started it all and makes for probably the greatest debut album of all time. They were still figuring out their sound, but this album kicked off their iconic dual lead-guitar sound. Dave Murray and Dennis Stratton almost play dueling guitars in most of these songs - Most apparent in "Phantom of the Opera" as they go back and forth during the solos while harmonizing for the rest of the song. Paul Di'Anno has vocals on lockdown and Harris's bass guitar thunders and gallops with Burr's drums lead the charge throughout the songs. Harris is a legendary bass guitar player and is the reason I picked up playing music as a hobby. While it's not the voice of Bruce Dickenson which has the siren-high vocals that most people know Iron Maiden for, Di'Anno's voice in this album pairs wonderfully with the music. All of Iron Maiden's albums feature Eddie - the freaky glowing-eyed zombie creature - in one way or another. Some people hate it, I personally love it. It's such an 80's thing to do and massively influenced the rock and metal scene for decades to come. You can thank Iron Maiden for Megadeth's cyborg character "Vic Rattlehead", Disturbed's beefed up character "The Guy", and Children of Bodom's "Roy" scythe-weilding grim reaper. We can also thank this album for inspiring a little band from the California Bay Area just starting out calling themselves Metallica. If you enjoyed this album I encourage you to dive into this band's discography. It's uphill from here and I would say this is their weakest which is a testament to their legacy. 10/10
Delightful from start to finish - the bass is genius!
Fuckin great. Iron Maiden has become my favorite classic metal group lately. This one does not disappoint and what a debut.
A great debut album by a band who went on to greater things. Much more raw than some of the later sounding stuff and includes some tracks that stayed in the setlist for years to come. Running free, phantom of the opera, prowler all great. Sanctuary too if you ignore that it wasn't on the original version. Excellent stuff.
A classic
Discazo!
The quintessential birth album of the new wave of British heavy metal and therefore in the importance range of the moon landing and the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Running Free e Phantom of the Opera duas clássicas boas pra caralho.
I love Iron Maiden so much. I’ve loved them since I was a child. My review of any of their classic era albums could never be without bias. This album is so influential. The album art for one started the whole metal aesthetic. They already have a blueprint here for what they’d become. It amazes me that one of their best epics, Phantom of the Opera, is on the first album. Anyway, Up the Irons! If you know you know.
Captivating riffs, amazing
# Album Name: Iron Maiden # Artist: Iron Maiden # Rating: 5/5 # Comments: What a fucking banger!!!!!! The entire album is quality. Take no prisoners. # Top Tunes: Whole damn album # Would I listen to it again? Fuck yeah!
Its iron maiden. One of my favourite bands. This album is what started it all…
Not their most epic, but probably most fun album - very playful, unusual for the current time.
Classic maiden
Holy shit, do I love Iron Maiden?! First half is better than the second but still woah!
HELL YEAH. I should relisten to more Iron maiden
This hit just right after that horrible Bee Gees concept album. The double guitar attack is great! Listening to this makes me realize that this is what all of my favorite bands wish they could do
Absolute belter of an album. Just love raw passion and energy. In an odd twist, a mate of mine who for reasons unknown visits the last resting place of famous people. About two hours after I finished listening to this masterpiece, he sent me a photo of Paul Di'Annos grave.
After a string of mid albums, this was an awesome breathe of fresh air. I use to listen to Iron Maiden growing up, but I drifted away from heavy metal for awhile. Revisiting this made me realize how amazing the craftsmanship is in their music. High energy and some amazing riffs. And to think this was just them starting out and I prefer later Maiden albums. Favorite Track - Phantom of the Opera Least Favorite Track - Strange World ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
What a pull for album 200! Despite being an Iron Maiden fan for all these years I've only ever listened to a handful of songs from this album. This was my first time listening to it all the way through. What an awesome album! Raw punk energy (see "Prowler" and "Running Free") mixed with the early seeds of the grandiose song writing we would hear on later Maiden releases (see "Phantom of the Opera"). I don't think I could have asked for a better way to end my week or reach 200 albums. 5/5
↑: Prowler, Remember Tomorrow, Phantom of the Opera, Transylvania, Iron Maiden ↓: –
Yeah yeah yeah!!!!
Back when Iron Maiden had a punk flair and a different singer (RIP Paul), but they were still an absolutely killer (no pun intended) band. Fantastic songs abound on this thing, with exceptional guitar work on the more epic tracks, the ballads, and the hook-driven shorter songs alike. This record is amongst my favorites in their discography and I'm glad Paul seems to be getting his due for the most part in the many years since his contributions to what is perhaps the greatest metal band of all time.
Hoy escucho "Phantom Of The Opera" o "Transylvania" y me pregunto por qué fui tan anormal.
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this. The various elements seem to work together better than metal I’ve heard that comes after. This really sounds like it sets the groundwork for where the genre goes the next decade. This could be the gateway album that helps me understand/enjoy the genre more. First half especially was great. Rating: 4.6
Wow, there was nothing I disliked about this. Especially considering it seems they weren’t super happy with production of this record, I loved it! I’ll look forward to more of their albums popping up! Also one of them lives where I’m from and I saw him all the time and thought it was weird he ended up in Yarm coz I thought he was from somewhere Nordic… he’s from bloody Hartlepool. The more you know!
Damn right!
This album rips, every track is a banger.
Grandioso
Absolutely shocked by how much I liked this album. This is not my genre at all but I really enjoyed this. I had never listened to Iron Maiden before but this was much more melodic than I expected based on my impressions of them.
So good...
I'm a huge Iron Maiden fan. I was introduced to them with Bruce Dickinson era stuff and that makes up most of my core memories of them - I've seen them live with Bruce a bunch of times. This is really frickin' good stuff though. I'm not sure if I'm listening to a really recent remaster, but it sounds amazing on my headphones right out of the gate. The instruments all sound great and there's some really awesome vocal harmonies that I'm not sure I remember catching in previous listens. "Prowler" is a fantastic starter. The heavy riff in "Remember Tomorrow" is awesome and I really enjoy the solo. "Phantom of the Opera" is an all-timer. "Transylvania" is one I discovered pretty late in my Maiden fandom, but it's become one of my favorites. Excellent instrumental. "Iron Maiden" is an excellent song and a fantastic closer. This version of "Running Free" is fine but maybe feels a little lacking compared to their live performance of it. Overall, maybe it doesn't hit the highs that their later output does for me, but this is a really awesome album from one of my favorite bands. An excellent listen. Up the irons!
My neck hurts from headbanging in my cubicle, but it was totally fucking worth it.
Soooo SO into this - very happy that Jesse has, like his favourite song ever, “listened to Iron Maiden babyyyy” Haven’t stopped thinking about this and will probably go into more Iron Maiden going forward and if that’s not what this is all about then idk man
This isn't polished Maiden but it's still exceptional. Early era has some real punk elements that really work. Not a weak song on the album - Running Free is such an addictive song. Legends. Up the irons
oh yeah
good nice to hear after waking up from a nap
Its got a couple misses for me but it's hard to argue that Iron Maiden is anything besides one of the most talented bands ever. Their music oozes skill, just listening to it makes you wish you were there. 4.5 for sure but deserving of the 5 stars more than a 4 star
Heavy metal floor pedal man Having Iron Maiden in my Ace Combat playlist just associates this sound with launching semi-autonomous air-to-air guided missiles in my brain. Had a nice listen with my good time hat on. This isn’t my favorite Iron Maiden album but it’s good. Easy breezy, doesn’t overstay its welcome at 37 minutes. Phantom of the Opera and Transylvania back-to-back are the highlights of this thing for sure. Any time I started to get bored there was a tone shift or song change that hooked me back in. Probably closer to a 4 for me.
A masterpiece in my eyes. This has some of the most epic and atmospheric metal songs to ever do it. Prowler is one the best album beginners ever. The transition from Transylvania to Strange World is one of the only moments in music that, to this day, can still give me goosebumps. Some may argue (even the band itself) that the production brings the quality of the album down, but it doesn't phase me, and the music itself more than makes up for it. It's got a reckless vibe to it. Running Free is definitely the weakest on the album, but its still a great song. Just goes to show how good this album is.
This first album definitely impressed me.
I've obviously listened to Iron Maiden in the past, but I don't think I'd ever listened to this album. It's good! But I feel like it's shy of their other albums, which set the bar very high for my expectations of Iron Maiden. There are some absolute bangers though, like Transylvania. Despite not being Iron Maiden's best album, it still deserves a 5/5
Man this is so great. I found Phantom of the Opera when I was a kid by mistake while looking for stuff from the musical. It didn't have any information except for the song title and I literally saved it until the technology existed to search by ear (Shazam) and I could find out what it was. I've never explored Iron Maiden but kind of feel like I'm going to after listening to this.
I managed to catch Iron Maiden play at the MTS Centre at The Somewhere Back in Time tour. This was my first time seeing a concert where the stage design was quite involved. Seeing their giant mascot Eddy pop out for the first time not knowing this was a thing they did was incredible. Great music, artists and performers if you ask me.
Some cool early Maiden
The beginning of… #UpTheIrons
For someone that actually NEVER listens to heavy metal, i absolutely loved it. Expanded my perspective on what actually is heavy metal. APPROVED. And the GUITARE OMG absolutely crazy.
album that mixes metal and punk sounds in a very fun and cool way, I like the voice of Poul D'Angelo, he changes his voice depending on the type of music, he makes beautiful dark and disturbing lyrics
I had heard of Iron Maiden I had not heard the Album Iron Maiden I had not heard the singles. Up to now, I'd kind of dismissed Metal. I'm not sure why. This is great! Clearly an influence to many bands later. The tracks are great. Excellent guitars, drums, bass. This is exactly why I'm doing the 1001 albums to hear stuff I've not heard, but really should have.
Great
I’ve explored many different genres in the 45+ years since I purchased my first cassette. Yet, I’ve never done a deep dive into metal, beyond speed metal in my punk days. Perhaps due to the associated artwork (looking at you Eddie), bands like Maiden seemed gimmicky. Perhaps so but listening to Iron Maiden for this project makes me realize that one should not judge a book by its cover. Done right, there is something incredibly cool about two lead guitars playing against each other. The music just has an enormous scale. The album draws from the raw energy of punk, but with creative, rapid changes in tempo and chords I associate with prog rock. There is a lot of talent on display here. I walked into this one with an open mind, but with low expectations. I finished my first listen and immediately started it again. Now I need to hit up my metal head friends to see where I should go from here. I can confidently say that I’ll be taking a deeper dive into Maiden. I can also confidently say that you’ll never see me sporting their merch. I maintain that that bias is warranted. Fun stuff and an amazing debut.
Sorry bros but Paul has more sauce than Bruce Will I listen to again: 100%
Classic
Very good
🤘🏼
I will base this review on the original UK release, rather than the North American edition, which added the single "Sanctuary". In some regard, I understand that there was a need to include another Iron Maiden album when Bruce Dickinson wasn't the lead vocalist. After all, this band had gone through several singers over 50 years, thus it made sense to at least mention another. Plus, there is sentimental value in looking back on a band's humble beginnings. This is why we get to check out the self-titled debut, when the lead vocalist was Paul Di'Anno. First, let me be clear, I do not consider Paul to be as good a singer as Bruce Dickinson. But really, that's an apples-to-oranges comparison if you think about it. Bruce has a more operatic singing style that complements the band's more progressive-leaning compositional work of later releases. Paul, on the other hand, had a more punk-ish attitude to his performance, with a grittier, down-to-earth delivery that gave the band's early output a more aggressive flair. Sure, he could hold a long note on tracks like "Remember Tomorrow" and "Strange World", but there was something truly gripping about the more in-your-face vocal performance he had. I was certainly entertained enough to have fun and sing along throughout the album's runtime. I enjoyed every track on their debut. There's the obvious live staples of "Iron Maiden" and "Running Free", the harbinger of the band's more progressive songwriting in "Remember Tomorrow" and "Phantom of the Opera", the instrumental onslaught of "Transylvania" into the ethereal ballad of "Strange World", and the no-frills rockers of "Prowler" and "Charlotte the Harlot". Even with lineup changes to come, the core identity of the band's style was largely cemented with this record, especially with Steve Harris's bass gallops and some electrifying guitar work from Dave Murray and Dennis Stratton. Overall, I had a fun time revisiting Iron Maiden's debut. It is such an immaculate showcase for what's to come. Rest in power, Paul.
I had to grow into Maiden... but I did! I love the maximalism. I love the operatic highs and the growling lows. I love the grit and the glamour. Listening to it is like smelling salts for my mind.
Minted as a favorite, epic, proggy, dumb in a good way, loved the instrumental on this one
peak debut
This album is great. Pretty damn good debut album!
5 for Prowler alone, such an awesome song. While this album doesn't quite rise to the greatness of Number of the Beast, it's still excellent. Their pre-Dickinson vocalist was solid.
Oh yeah baby.
Classic.
This album has the two things that makes all 80s metal good: excessive guitar solos and excessive amounts of guitar solos. I'd give this album 5 stars if it were purely instrumental, the vocals are just a bonus. Phantom of the Opera alone has like three guitar solos back-to-back-to-back and it goes directly into an instrumental, which then transitions directly into another guitar solo. They certainly know what they're good at. The amount of guitar soloing would probably be an issue if this weren't an Iron Maiden album, but it's an Iron Maiden album, so I have nothing to worry about. Best part is it has a self-titled song on a self-titled album.
Maravilloso disco!!! Riffs geniales
F@ck yes!! That is all.
I love Iron Maiden and the first 5 albums are all 5 stars in my book.
Yet another pleasant surprise from this list. And another case of having the wrong preconceptions about an artist. If I’d have heard ‘Strange World’ without knowing who performed it, I might have taken 1,001 guesses and still got it wrong. This album has so much more musicianship than I expected, and this vocalist dude can really sing. I didn’t think that could be Bruce Dickinson! There was some subtlety and nuance to the songs and the vocal delivery that was the biggest surprise. Shame they hired that Bruce bloke.
hadnt listened to this in YEARS, so nice to revisit it // raw thunderclap debut, NWOBHM manifesto // paul di’anne’s raspy, punky vocals are everything // galloping basslines + dual guitars = relentless momentum // opener snarls; title track gallops; phantom of the opera ambitious and epic // riffs are jagged, energy is unpolished, production is thin but very much alive // slower tracks (remember tomorrow, strange world) offer a fleeting breath, but occasionally plodding // chaotic, unrefined, and brimming with menace // this is THE blueprint
know this one from youtupe :))) a very easy and fun listen with lots of fun little treats for knowing ears.
No. 116 Iron Maiden’s debut is a classic. It’s just raw energy captured in 8 tracks of brilliance.
In my collection (ok so I taped it off my step-brother) Probably the absolute best album (and band) to come out of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, and easily the most successful. Hard and melodic. I think the production is good too even though tha band have since slagged it off. Paul Di'Anno was a great singer and it's a shame he went off the rails on drugs and got fired. I lost interest in Iron Maiden when they replaced Di'Anno with Bruce Dickinson after Killers. I never rated Samson, his previous band, and thought he was far too operatic. What the hell do I know!
already listened
Haven’t listened to this in years but it still bangs
10
I absolutely love this album!
Absolute smasher album. I sometimes wonder if Paul DiAnno's Maiden was better than Bruce's. I grew up listening to Bruce so its tough but this line up of Maiden was more punk and raw they were concern about loud sound and power chords over clean technical playing. It feels more angry to me and I really love it. This album I had adversion as a kod because of Paul now I think its one pf their best because of Paul. A mist listen must buy for any metalhead
Bruce is still the better vocalist
Hell yeah. Still catches me up when I hear a vocalist who isn't Bruce Dickinson.
One of the best in their genres.
Honestly some solid jams. 5 stars
Lots of fun, cool riffs, doesn't overstay its welcome
Groundbreaking metal album with dueling lightening speed guitars, driving rhythms and thundering bass all pulled together with soaring operatic vocals that will tear out your ears as you pump your fist to stories depicting human's inhumanity. This one for sure put Iron Maiden on the pedestal as one of the greatest heavy metal bands of all time.
Very cool! Although this is their first album their sound is pretty much fully formed here and they will go on to further refine and develop their style from here. There are a few more albums that should be on this list other than just this one and Number Of The Beast. I believe their best albums are actually after those two so it is too bad that they are not on here in place of some of the dubious choices. It’s been a while since I’ve heard this and what a great listen this was! Now I want to keep going through their discography, at least through the next 7 or 8 albums because they are all great!
Banger, Phantom of the opéra je l'ai écoutée en boucle à une période, un de leurs meilleurs albums je pense
Great debut album from NWBHM stalwarts
Hell yeah. Face melted. This absolutely rules. Must-listen #285.
Up the Irons!
tears of joy knowing that Iron Maiden made the list, and that, for sure Fear of the Dark and/or Piece of Mind will be here as well. There's no conceivable world in which the self-titled made it over those two.
First time hearing this. Far better than I thought it would be. Much more chubby groovy froggy then I expected.
As a rock/metal fan, I’m ashamed to admit I had never listened to Iron Maiden before. This was a great album
Yes. Crazy to realize this was the first Iron Maiden album I ever heard in the 2000s because i thought it was a best-of/hits release.
10/10
Songs 8/8 Truly one of the best metal albums of all time. Upon relistening just now I realized this album takes at least a little inspiration from the prog rock album from a year before The Wall by Pink Floyd. The ballads of this album specifically are very artsy and psychedelic.
surprised to say i enjoyed this a lot. it reminded me of umm dragonforce thru the fire n the flames :D felt at home as a jjba enjoyer
Metal perfection…almost Prog metal, but if not it, than it’s forefather!
wait, actually great
Real shit
Excellent album. Great riffs
You'll never hear me complain about getting an Iron Maiden album. I absolutely love the riffs, and it's good to know that they have never missed from album one. I'm mostly familiar with the songs that have Bruce Dickinson on them, so getting to hear the OG vocalist Paul Di'Anno was a nice treat. I absolutely loved Remember Tomorrow especially. His vocals on that track were amazing. Rest in peace to an amazing talent.
Pretty great intro to their music. Remember Tomorrow and Strange World might be masterpieces
Wow this was phenomenal. I always assumed Iron Maiden were lot more scream metal or like death metal with that real guttural vocals. This was not that at all. It was melodic, it had a tune and it sounded fucking awesome!
What a unique album. I’d never really listened to them before, holy crap!
Killer album (not to be confused with the album after it, Killers). Early Maiden is a bit of a different experience from the more polished and epic works of the Bruce Dickinson era, but there's a real kick and even charm in their first album, grungy sounding as it may be. Paul Di'Anno is a great singer, and the metal is indeed heavy. Favorite track would probably be Charlotte the Harlot, but the dark and kickass instrumental track Transylvania is a great one too.
I remember my brother playing this back in the 80's and thinking WTF? Now several decades later having seen Iron Maiden in concert and listening to most of their albums, this is a classic that needs to be heard
fire
Great Album.
Great debut, and the raw, punkier vibe of this era fits Paul D'Ianno's vocals perfectly. Most of the songs are quick and short, but "The Phantom of the Opera" lays the groundwork for their later epics.
On les aime les Iron Maiden. Du premier éponyme à Fear of the Dark ça fait partie de l'histoire du métal.
Vraiment high energy, j'ai adoré. Paul aussi a dansé beaucoup sur Phantom of the Opera.
Surprisingly amazing
This is the Iron Maiden album Iron Maiden, featuring the song “Iron Maiden” by Iron Maiden, off of the album Iron Maiden. I’m easy. I see Metal, I enjoy Metal very much. Was already very familiar with this band previously, but hadn’t heard an album from front to back by them until now. For reasons that should be obvious, I always get Iron Maiden mixed up with Megadeth. While I absolutely LOVE Vic Rattlehead , I think Eddie the Head may just be the most iconic mascot in Metal history. I digress. Anyway, my favorite song on this album is “Phantom of the Opera”. The solo absolutely shreds on that one. This is an easy 5 for me. Whether it be the original singer or not, even being the debut album, this is still very much a core Iron Maiden album, and it turns out to be an incredible one at that. I just can’t help but love the vocals, killer riffs, fast pace, energy, vibes, it’s all outstanding here. Every time I roll an album like this, I dread whatever may come the next day, because I spent the entire day absolutely loving this album to death. This is the first of 2 Iron Maiden albums I have heard for the project so far, and you can probably have it as a safe bet that the other one is going to get 5 stars as well. We’ll see. This was 37 minutes and 8 songs of absolute bliss. My only concern, if you can call it one, is that I wish it was longer. That’s a pretty good concern to have in my opinion.
Dare I say favourite Maiden album
Prowler isn't as good as the version on The Soundhouse Tapes but this is still one of Maiden's better albums.
4.5 ou-yeah-yeeahhs out of 5. I greatly prefer my Maiden with Dianno over Dickenson. All time album, all time album cover
Excellent Heavy Metal debut
Nicht das beste Maiden Album, trotzdem ne 5
Pretty good. More punky than I'd thought, but classic of the genre for a reason.
mal posso esperar…
Great album
Easily their best album. Paul's vocals combined with killer riffs, solos, and overall songwriting give this record a unique sound that they never replicated later on. CLASSIC! 10/10
Iron Maiden's self titled debut album is a fine debut, and an incredibly influential album, boasting some truly mighty tracks. The energy is front-loaded, particularly with the first five songs (including "Sanctuary"). While the quality dips slightly on side two with tracks like "Charlotte The Harlot" . The album was recorded with the late Paul Di'Anno on lead vocals. I had the pleasure of seeing him front Iron Maiden live on their 1981 "Killers" Tour, and he was a brilliant singer, blending a raw punk sensibility with powerful rock delivery. The undeniable standout track on the album is "Phantom Of The Opera." It is a stunning, foundational masterpiece. Brutal in its execution, yet absolutely epic in its storytelling, this track is the template for Iron Maiden's long-form epics that would follow. It features incredible tempo changes, great drumming, frenetic riffing, blistering guitar solos, and phenomenal bass work. The tempo switch at 4 minutes 34 seconds, leading into the stunning guitar solos still gives me 'the chills' to this day. This is a song that clearly influenced the thrash metal bands that followed a few years later. The one drawback is the production. The overall mix could be crisper and sharper, a flaw bassist Steve Harris agreed with, which is why he brought in the legendary Martin Birch to rectify the engineering on their second album "Killers". Despite this one technical issue, and though this is not my favourite Iron Maiden album, it is a five-star debut that laid the groundwork for a legendary career. A final mention must be made of Derek Riggs’ stunning artwork. Across seventeen studio albums (as of 2025), Iron Maiden has famously never appeared on any of these covers, instead opting for the iconic presence of their enduring mascot, "Eddie The Head", in various guises. 1 "Prowler" (5/5) 2 "Sanctuary" (5/5) 2 "Remember Tomorrow" (5/5) 3 "Running Free" (5/5) 4 "Phantom of the Opera" (5/5) 5 "Transylvania" (instrumental) (5/5) 6 "Strange World" (4/5) 7 "Charlotte the Harlot" (4/5) 8 "Iron Maiden" (5/5) Total - 43 Average - 4.78 162/1001 90/162 albums reviewed were new to me.
Yeah baby
Classic album. Revolutionary at the time, but the production quality isn't great. Great guitar playing, great bass, solid drums. The singing is not as polished as on later albums though
i lv it
I prefer the Dickinson albums, but this is good enough for a 4.5 plus the ol' metal bump
This record is a classic. The production is the only real flaw. It's OK, not great with a raw and unrefined mix, but at the end, it is a truly undeniable record. A metal classic that definitely deserves to be on this list and should be listened to by everyone.
9/10 Very good and interesting instrumentally, some lyrics feel creatively lacking though.
I don't think there's a band out there that has a more iconic cover art and title style. One of the most influential heavy metal bands and you know you've made it when sensitive Christians start burning your albums for reasons they just conjured up. They first started burning albums in 1966 when the Beatles said they're more popular than Jesus, and the Christians had so much fun buying albums to burn that they kept looking for excuses to do it afterwards. I do like that this was back when there was an actual singing element for metal compared to now which is mostly incomprehensible throat wailing. There's a nice melodic progression to the songs that is very heavy, but still very musical. Make sure that you listen to Sanctuary as well as it's left off the 2015 remaster on Spotify. Although Iron Maiden wasn't the first heavy metal band, they are quite possibly the most influential on the metal genre as a whole, inspiring bands like Metallica, In Flames, Anthrax, Alice in Chains etc.
very good album
It's no wonder Iron Maiden is so influential in heavy metal. This is mind blowing, especially for 1979. This feels like THE ORIGINAL heavy metal band. Sure, Led Zeppelin blazed the trail, but Iron Maiden sets the standard. First time I've heard this album, and just ... Wow. My rating: 5/5
5/5
Straight banger.
Metal! Love the limited lyrics - mostly just wailing on every instrument they have.
The album
The guitar work on this album is amazing. This album is amazing musically.
I only started this and didn't finish, but was fascinated. I have not listened to this band really before. Great voice.
The remaster of this album pushes it up to five stars for me. I always liked the material, but the production on my original tape copy was just a little bit too rough around the edges. Actually being able to hear the instruments properly makes a huge difference. Also, there's more classics here than I remembered. Nicely spread out over the album, with the tracks that aren't played in concert as much, but are still quality. Paul Di'Annos vocals aren't quite as good as Bruce Dickinson's in my opinion, but they come close.
fav track: phantom of the opera
Masterpiece of punk moving into metal
Awesome. Not a bad song. I prefer this foen to earth and varies version of maiden with di'anno to dickensons high grandiosity
Great.
Loved it
Love it
Classico.
Gonna get ya
I am a huge fan of the rock genre and I have heard of the Iron Maiden before. This album was packed with exhilarating tracks that it was over before I knew it. Easily replayable and never missing a beat, I have great thoughts about this album. This was the band's debut album which makes me curious about the other albums they have and whether they will appear in this 1001 list. Overall, I had a great time listening to it while reading Serial Experiments: Lain wiki.
Top
Love Iron Maiden!
As a kid who grew up in the 80's and 90's right in the heart of the satanic panic it's funny to go back and listen to this kind of metal. Holy shit were people losing their minds of Iron Maiden and AC/DC. When you actually sit down and listen to it you realize that it is nothing compared to what would come later. Hell I'm sure if I played some Iron Maiden now to some people they might go 'wow this is pretty good punk/heavy rock'. Which is it, and this album is great.
Amazing!
5 stars. Their iconic second album. Missing a little something without Dickinson, but still one of the classic heavy metal albums. Great sound and dark riffs.
Best of IM! A classic!
Fockin hell yeah
One of the classics
Iron Maiden without Bruce Dickinson is a different band. The soaring vocals are replaced with a more growled, workmanlike sound. I like it!
very good album
Really great.
Solid as hell (pun intended)
Phantom of the opera, running free and iron maiden mwahh 😘
Day 10 This was probably my 10th listen of the album. It is one of my favs metal records ever!
Someone send some help my ears are on FIRE!!!! 🔥
I've been wanting to start a band recently, and thinking about what type of band would be fun to be a part of. Early Maiden must have been a blast to play in. Maiden is such a tight and polished band, so I like hearing their early, more raw music. The songs are still very complicated, and their tight as all get out, but the sound is very different. Their guitar tone sounds more normal. On Number of the Beast, sometimes the guitars are so perfected that they sound almost like another instrument. On Transylvania, it just sounds like some boys with humbuckers and loud Marshalls. Anyway all the songs rule and so does this album. Album cover: (A+) Eddie
This is the best debut album ever. Not a single miss on this and this has aged wonderfully. 10/10 album.
Prowler top 5 maiden
first metal album i've reviewed and this is definitely a good pick. i'm not a full metalhead but I do have a lot of appreciation for the genre. and like, it's IRON MAIDEN. the album art is a bit terrifying but even outside of my personal love for the genre I have to appreciate the guitar solos and some really nice tempo changes thrown in, both elements making the album a lot more interesting to listen to. favorite song: "iron maiden", by the band iron maiden, from the album "iron maiden" overall: 9/10
ABSOLUTELY IN LOVE WITH THIS ALBUM
Possibly the best metal debut of all time
Up The Irons!! Love me some Iron Maiden but been an age since I’ve listened to them so I was very glad to get this today. This is one of the all time great debut albums. There’s some absolute classics on here. To be honest when you think of songs like Phantom of The Opera and Iron Maiden that have been part of their live sets for decades, I actually prefer Paul Di’Anno’s more raw vocals on them. Top Track - Strange World I can’t believe there’s only two Maiden albums on here so that’s me done with them already. Need to make a list of 1001 Metal Albums lol.
Great start to the week! :)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Fantastic album, I will listen to it again
Up the irons!!!
I loved it, but can see why they changed vocalists. some classic songs like running free on here that remain in their setlist.
An amazing album and great Debut
Excellent debut album from excellent band :)
masterpiece
Wow... It's no wonder that many fans are so attached to the early phase of this band with Paul. I listened to this album for the first time, not long ago, and I noticed the huge contrast in the sound of this album with those that would come later in this decade. They sound much more raw, like a rough diamond, but one that doesn't need to be polished. It's like a slightly cleaner version of Motorhead, if it's not too much of a heresy to say that hahaha. Plus, just like Black Sabbath, who debuted with an album of the same name, with a song of the same name in it, and changed the history of this so-called Heavy Metal by creating this genre, here we also have an "Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden", which introduces (at the end of the album hahaha) one of the most important and influential bands of this genre in the 80s. Everything fits together perfectly, as if the universe were conspiring for this...
The Number of The Beast, followed by their other early albums, including this one and up to and including Powerslave, cemented my love of hard driving rock. For me, very few lineups could elicit the same adrenalin filled response prompted by early Maiden.
10/10. Iron Maiden is one of my favourite bands. While I do wish that there were more Iron Maiden albums in the generator besides this album, and TNoTB (seriously, WHERE is "Powerslave" and SSoaSS???). Either way, this album is an absolute masterpiece!!! :)
This is not up to the level of some of their later albums, like Number of The Beast and Piece of Mind. Still, I really like this one. First of all, there is not a single bad song here. Also, Paul DiAnno's voice is a much better fit to the raw and at times punkish material than Bruce. You can in retrospect hear that this is the rough beginnings of something that will develop and become more grandiose and epic. You can also see the first little hints of what will become in Remember Tomorrow and Phantom of the Opera. Taking the cultural impact the album had into consideration, I can't help but handing out another 5-stars to Maiden.
Wonderful album. Straddles the worlds of punk and metal. Every song is wonderful, and it is impossible to say who contributed the most. Amazing what can be done when everyone pulls in the same direction working towards a common goal.
Great album. I especially like Transylvania into Strange World.
One of the best metal albums of all time!!!
Has to be a top debut album of all time
Highlight of the album: Phantom of the Opera Transylvania Iron Maiden
Peak
oh iron maiden... where do i begin... + Prowler
7/5, such an amazing album. I was already familiar with it but I haven't listened to it in yearssss, I'm so happy that this was recommended. Fully deserves to be on this list, and my love for 80s metal has been renewed.
The very first Iron Maiden album! Maiden is one of my favorite bands so this isn't an unbiased review. This pre Bruce Dickinson album sets the scene for what is to become a staple - it sets the scene for the rest of the career. It is a lot rawer and to some degree a bit heavier than their later work which I think is potentially related to Paul DiAmos voice.
Hard Rock es ACD/DC, heavy es Iron maiden. Casualmente este 1980 presentaron sus 2 mejores discos: back in black y su debut. Fin del asunto
I am a huge fan of the first five studio albums + *Live After Death*. All of them rank high 4½ to five. I honestly don't think any album after *LAD* even come close. Of the two DiAnno albums this is my favorite I think mainly because of its raw punky almost DIY attitude it has. And all of that come down to Paul's fierce delivery. I think this album fits DiAnno better than *Killers*. Even though on *Killers* they've progressed musically from the debut, you can tell they really were starting to need more theatrical vocalist than DiAnno. But he pulls it off. The debut, though, he fits in like a glove and the raw power behjnd it is inescapable to my ears. 9.8/10 ★★★★½
Yes
Loud and in your face! Great album with some slappin riffs and guitar work (and can't forget about the awesome basslines as well!)
Fucken rules
Ok
This list is trying to make me metalhead, and it's so working. This rips the whole way through, starting strong and only getting better.
Honestly fucking epic. One of those albums that sounds a bit corny but that’s only because there’s been so many imitations of it that it diluted the initial impact. Crazy that despite that it still hits
As a huge Maiden fan, I can say with certainty that this is not their best album. I'd put it somewhere around the middle to bottom half. Still five stars, but they've done some incredible records and it's a shame there's only two of their albums on this list. I can see why this would be one though. It's their debut and they came sprinting out of the blocks with a point to prove. Lyrically it's not great. In fact a lot of the tracks just repeat the same verse two or three times. But the music more than makes up for this. Every single track has a very catchy hook, melody. riff or singalong chorus that you'll find yourself humming for ages. The awful production actually adds to the charm of this album in my opinion. It's really rough and unpolished which gives it a bit of a punky vibe along with the vocals of Paul Di'Anno. As I said before with 'The Number Of The Beast' if you like this album, please do yourself a favour and check out their discography. You won't be disappointed. Iron Maiden are the best there is, the best there was, the best there ever will be. Up The Irons.
The best album here so far, and the first album I got that I knew already. I love Iron Maiden, they were the first metal band I listened to in my life (not surprising) - so, I have a special place in my heart for all Iron Maiden. Really really really great album with some of the most iconic songs. Damn, I wish this album had Bruce Dickinson. But yeah, this album made me happy when I saw that I got it.
good, will listen to it again
Bam. Off to the races w this classic.
Iron Maiden is the fucking greatest band in the world!
10/10
Favourite tracks - Prowler, Running Free, Phantom of the Opera
*confused delighted screaming* No Bruce but.. still good?!!
I felt like I just experienced the birth of the sun
actually my first time venturing into pre-number of the beast iron maiden, and while im not super interested in anachronistic comparisons i will say theyre tbh very recognizable, maybe even more so than i was led to believe! its marginally rougher and more DIY and inherently has some punk connections but its still straining for big grandiosity within those boundaries, soaring leads and chugging riffs and intricate steve harris basslines. iron maiden always rly cuts to the heart of metal's Escapist appeal, up to and including their extremely accessible hyper-melodicism. honestly its easy to imagine a different set of historical circumstances that puts some of their tracks in the walmart playlist instead of enter sandman. album itself is maybe not the most "distinct" thing all these decades later but its hard to fault the listening experience in any way!!!! bangs p much front to back, and the lack of being couched in bigger resources lends its own appeal...the best songs to ever torment u from ur neighbor's garage
Rating: 10/10 One of the best debut albums of all time. Catchy, fun, beautiful, and absolutely infectious.
The kind of energy I needed. The cover art probably kept me away in my youth. I had an uncle with an Iron Maiden denim jacket that haunted me. Last time I said "I look forward to hearing more", I wasn't disappointed. The Blues, Prog, and Garage Rock. Metal. Great song craft, great album.
This is obviously not the polished, well-produced Iron Maiden we know now, and I actually mean this as a compliment - I like the rougher sound, and it somehow makes it more fun and organic. If this was the first Iron Maiden albun that fell into my hands I think I would have been much bigger fan.
Surprisingly chill and Led Zep-like.
I have listened to this album hundreds of times and I never get tired of it.
Honestly Iron Maiden is just a really fun band, gonna have to listen to more of their stuff.
I’ve always avoided heavy metal because I just didn’t think it would be for me. Holy hell was I wrong! This album blew my mind and was amazing! Full out jamming at work and keeping beats. Biggest surprise so far 60+ albums into this project. And so far my favorite find of a song with Running Free. Who knew!? But I’m sold on this album!
Up the irons! An important part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, the golden age of metal.
Really enjoyed. Not as heavy as expected, until the end
Up the irons
Phantom of Opera was really good. This album might have been an inspiration for many of the greatest riffs in guitar history.
A landmark for 80s metal. Nothing would be the same without it! The early sound of IM shine through in this. Metal albums, IMO, aren’t worth much without a good instrumental track (or two). This album delivers what it’s supposed to. “Strange World” is exemplary, and "Phantom of the Opera" is undeniably magnificent. I prefer the vocals of Bruce Dickinson, but Di’Anno does it well. This should be part of any Metal enthusiasts diet.
Punchy Raw Explosive Punk-meets-speed-metal in your face debut album with the seeds of progressive metal songwriting already coming to fruition by songwriter/bassist Steve Harris.
I didn't think I'd like classic heavy metal as much as I did. Should've give these guys a chance a long time ago
less go this is what I'm talking about
Great, but you can tell they haven't hit their stride yet. There was a lot less singing then I expected, for a band with such a powerful and unique singer.
Amazing album. Would listen every week.
5 stars
Nice. Great instrumentals and fitting vocal work. Not my favorite selection from their discography though. 'Transylvania' was a standout for me.
Such a classic
I consider this album an official transitionary piece tying rock and roll to heavy metal. There are some who heard this and never went any deeper, but more that heard this and never went back!
I’m not super familiar with Iron Maiden, but compared to the albums I’ve heard, this one feels more raw and unpolished. It’s not as heavy as some of their other work, but that’s not a bad thing. There’s a nice punk edge to it, and the galloping basslines throughout the album are my favorite part. I really enjoyed those!
Thin and raw. They say they hated punk but the sound is there. The big difference is the talent of the musicians, there is some great guitar playing on here and I personally love the contrast between the great playing and the cut and dry recording style. The imagery, music, and stage presence is the complete package with these guys, at least during the 80s, I wont vouch for the albums after Seventh Son. This first one is so cool to listen to and see how they evolved and how they influenced so many great metal bands.
I’d never listened to Iron Maiden’s debut before this, but I hear a masterpiece. Front to back, it’s an absolutely killer metal album. Elements of prog, almost catchy sections on a few songs, killer guitar solos, and Steve Harris’s romping bass make this a metal album of supreme quality.
I wish back in the 90’s when I was big into prog rock someone would’ve hipped me to this album. Not that my life would’ve been much different overall but I would’ve had 30 more years of this album in my life.
LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS ALBUM. Never heard of these guys before but I am officially a fan now. Going to have to listen to the rest of their discography because I was enjoying every song on this album. I'm new to music in general since I grew up in very religious household and now that I'm 17 I'm listening to real rock music and my life has never been better. This album is fucking awesome.
NWOBHM excellence, twin guitars blazing, Di'Anno belting out the vocals.
Fantastic. Not their best album, but damn good. This has gotten a lot of plays from me over the years and I'll definitely be coming back to it. 5/5
Bosh
RIP DiAnno. Great debut album from the band that shaped the NWOBHM
Easy 4.5 metal as f**k.
An incredible achievement for a debut album.
Maidens debut. Funny I should get this on the day Paul DiAnno died or was it on purpose
doobedoobady doodoodoo doodoodoo doodoodoo dooooooo that's me singing along to the guitar in phantom of the opera
Yes
Listened twice!
This ripped. Absolutely loved it. They nailed their own unique sound and were just plain awesome. Favorites were Prowler, Transylvania, and Charlotte the Harlot
Awesome metal - thoroughly enjoyed
I like it very much! Perfect music, cool guitar riffs, pleasant vocal! It is a masterpiece!
asdf
Really good
Fav: Prowler Least Fav: Running Free I was ready to hate this due to my indifference to metal and the terrible album cover, but it managed to pull through with 8 masterfully crafted songs
Before Steve Harris wrote songs about movies he liked, warriors and other cool shit he mainly wrote songs about murdering women. Iron Maiden's debut LP has no skips at all. While I prefer Dickinson's vocals, Di'Anno's style here suits the tone better. This album wastes absolutely no time, every song is as long as it needs to be. There are definitely bands that have pushed the boundaries of heavy metal further than Iron Maiden, but this album stills fucks today and it is truly timeless. While I enjoy the Dickinson era more and I wouldn't even put this in the top 5 Maiden albums I can't give this anything but a 5 in terms of not only importance to the genre but also musical quality. I'm very glad that Steve Harris gave up on playing for West Ham to become possibly the best heavy metal songwriter going.
Iconic Album! Really loved it.
Not quite as polished as their later work, but still tremendous! You can hear the next 20 years of what metal would become contained within it.
Loved it. Never listened to a full maiden album before. Short album that woke me up after a sleepless night.
Classic heavy metal. The guitar work is unbelievable. Absolutely beautiful tone; the guitars really seem to sing. Bass is excellent as well. I expected this album to be weaker than their later work, but I would put it only below Powerslave. The absence of Bruce Dickinson was not nearly as significant as I had expected because the other singer is excellent anyway. As for highlights, I would have to choose Phantom of the Opera because it is simply one of the most creative metal songs I've ever heard. I also really loved Strange World. It's difficult to pick a worst song because they were all at least solid.
Building on the shoulders of the great British metal bands that proceeded them. This absolute classic bridges the gap in time between Sabbath and deep purple years and the Judas priest era to come. Despite it being an early work there are key pieces of the Maiden sound that stick out and type you in, I had to follow this up with a tour of my favourite tracks.
Incredible musicianship all around, and with Iron Maiden's original vocalist. Outside of "Running Free" (which is an interesting call back to metals blues roots, but straight up sucks at the same time), I thought this album was great. Those 40 minutes just flew by. "Phantom of the Opera" and "Transylvania" are the biggest highlights for me
I didn't know I was a fan.
Maiden at their punkiest. Paul Di'Anno was still on vocals, providing a grittier, less dramatic sound than his successor. The star of the album is Steve Harris' melodic and driving baselines. The songs are catchy and well-written (even if they bear a heavy resemblance to late seventies New Wave of British Heavy Metal bands like Judas Priest, Saxon, or Diamond Head).
Maybe a 4.5, idk, but they rock hard and with confidence
Incredible album. They play that classic heavy metal style and actually match Black Sabbath in terms of energy and talent! Epic, fun music. I love the midsong groove changes too.
Early maiden rules (other maiden rules too)
Not my favorite Iron Maiden record, but that being said, it's still miles ahead of most of the music that gets put in front of me. incredible band with an incredible discography. This is an early representation of the band and shows a little more of their influences than later material. It's a great representation of their beginnings and where they will be heading musically in the future. I have a hard time trusting anyone who doesn't like Iron Maiden.
Awesome classic album.
Absolute class :) still stands the test of time and Paul Dianno is a class frontman!
