Reviews (page 3 of 13)

I thought it was gonna be mid... bro it was fire.

Okay then the first Maiden album! Always liked "Remember Tomorrow" and still do! Never heard a version of Bruce singing i realize now. Two real live classics Running Free and Iron Maiden, the latter one they still play and we love it. And ofc the Phantom is great. "Peeling off this onion" why just not give it 5 stars!

im not a frequent metal listener, i know some things here-and-there that i like, but its also a fairly unexplored area for me now metalheads can get on my nerves a little, oh someone gave a 1/5 to my indietronica dreamcore cosmical lofi whateverwave and all they said was "boring", go to their page and theyve reviewed 700 albums, favorite artists sepultura, metallica, gave ten 5/5s and half of them are to bands that sound like ancient gods well if all those albums are as cool as this one maybe they just have a point

some dope early thrash

This one surprised me. I haven't really liked other Iron Maiden I've heard, but this album was great. Maybe a bit more punk?

Awesome rock album

Soundtrack of my youth

Awesome Bass playing, inspirational... Good songs, would listen again...

Fantastic album. The beginning of the British metal invasion of the 80's.

This really grew on me. Never bothered listening to Iron Maiden before but I really enjoyed this.

Banger

Iron Maiden’s gonna get you, no matter how far.

My first record. Awesome experience hearing the opening riff to Prowler right away on one side, then the rest of the band coming in. Grew up on and favored the Bruce Dickinson stuff up to Powerslave back in the day, but that now seems like Spinal Tap opera looking back. Very much love the rawness of this first album, more straightforward, has aged much better than their later stuff.

straight bangers

Never listened to this the whole way through before, but gosh it’s a banger.

iconic metal greatness

Essential heavy metal album. Not as much of a focus on the vocals as other Iron Maiden albums, which I like.

Very good, I like this kind of metal with intelligible vocals that isn’t just someone killing their vocal chords. Prominent bass throughout stood out abit for me.

RRRRRRAHHHHHHHGHHHHH

Have always liked this album but once I saw them live, I loved this album. One of the best live shows you will ever see. Great lyrics, such good drumming, all around entertaining

I love Love LOVE this album. This is Iron Maiden for me.

Loved it!!! The vocals and guitar are amazing!! I prefer this one than the other one I got (number of the beast(???))

One might have a lot of preconceptions about Iron Maiden based on their album art. I guess I did. I'm not sure what kept me from listening to them but I'm mad it tookme this long. This is good stuff. I have been judging Iron Maiden by their cover for years and I'm mad I never gave them a chance.

Anything Maiden I am here for 10/10. So many good songs on this album, Running Free, Iron Maiden an absolute classic always played at theirs shows, Charlotte the Harlot is something of folklore at this point.

Yeahhhh! Let's have a headbanging session

Yes! Excited to get this on my list. Prowler!!! This is a great album from front to back and not too long and drawn out. Each song is a good one and I can’t believe it’s from 1980. 4.5/5

Very solid. I am a metal fan but never really listened to Iron Maiden. I don't think I had heard any of the songs on this album but thought it was very good all around.

Excellent album. This one, Killers, and Number of the Beast are all perfect.

Just epic, one of the best debuts ever. This has everything Maiden's career has been built one maybe aside from Dickinson's air raid siren voice. DiAnno is completely different, but maybe even better. This mixture of a rough, punky sound and proggy epics is unlike anything else and the fact that many of the songs are bona fide classics speaks for itself.

Urban punk Eddie was so much scarier to a junior metal kid than later fantasy Eddie.

Throwback to 16 year old me spinning this on and on and on and on. I can't give this anything else than a 5

I can't review this album objectively because Iron Maiden is one of my foundational bands. I've listened to this album thousands of times. I was alive when this was fresh, and listening to albums like this felt like plugging into something more important than anything else.

Perfect. Never listened as I don't usually listen to any rock or metal, but I like this alot.

Crazy how much metal has evolved over the years. This sounds like a lot of other hard rock of the era, but fast forward 40 years and you're listening to some guy with neck and hand tattoos shriek his lungs up through his esophagus into your ear drums while another guy who looks ambiguously like he just walked out of either a comic book store or a gun show is going to fucking town on a 32nd note blast beat.

For a debut album, it is awesome.

Yes 10/10

Maiden's debut album, at first I didn't think I liked this that much compared to some of their bigger stuff but I really enjoyed listening to it. Bruce sounds great here before he started destroying his voice over the years and the instrumentals are so fucking crisp here. Not many hits but the sound is fun. 9/10

Iron Maiden undeniably rocks. This isn't my favorite Maiden album, but it is far from bad. Hell of a debut album that deserves every bit of praise it gets.

💖 transylvania 🗣️ 🔟

Classic! Iron Maiden has some awesome songs.

I LOVE METAL. Iron maiden always have been a manual of everything a metal album should have, specially speaking of the techniques in guitar. Super energic. 10/10

Very nice

Iron Maiden is the best song on Iron Maiden by Iron Maiden

Love Maiden. It's an interesting pick and not one I would have chosen for this list. I do like the early years more than other but yes it's a much different, more raw almost punk sound to it. I would give this a 4 stars but this was dropped on my birthday so I'm going 5.

Probably the best album iron maiden made

Is it cheesy? Yes. Is it outdated? Yes. Is it immensely charming? Damn right. This thing kills with its style and guitar riffs and solos. The lyricism has some small low points but it doesn’t really affect the experience of the album. Very cool 80s metal!

Am I crazy, or is this--like--significantly better than The Number of the Beast (already one of my favorite albums)? It's easy to only think of metal bands as being loud, but the musicianship on this album is top notch. There are more than a few albums like this in this book where metal bands show their chops, and I really appreciate them quite a bit. Favorite track: Running Free

Awesome

yet another group that pretty much defined the genre in such a way that they should be considered the eternal kings. perfect headbangin, toe-tappin, and adrenaline packin heavy metal music. metal so unbelievably good it's scary.

looove this. such good instrument use. length is perfect. it felt like i was listening to a concert, the ending was amazing.

A classic

I really liked this, maybe even more than ‘classic’ Maiden. They went off in a more epic and epically silly direction, which was also great, but this is an enjoyable dance rock album. Surprisingly reminiscent of bands like The Jam, The Police, even The Clash, as well as the more expected Status Quo and Gary Glitter.

I was excited to see this album, but I was still blown away. It's so well paced. All of the hard hitting songs are preceded by something a little softer, so they all hit really hard when they arrive. This is the first time I've come in with high expectations and been pleasantly surprised

Love this album the more I listen to it!

One of the best debut albums in Hard rock music.

An absolute metal classic

This is my favorite Maiden album, all the songs have arrangements that combine the solid metal sound (Prowler, Charlotte the Harlot) with dreamy and evocative sounds (Remember tomorrow, Strange World). Moreover, the wonderful voice of Paul Di'Anno is perfect for this album.

So happy to hear this again!

Bass good

Great. The grandmasters of metal

Outstanding from start to finish. Not one wasted note or lyric. Superb.

One of the great mysteries of hard rock/metal is what would have happened to Maiden if Paul Di'Anno had stayed on as the band's vocalist. Their first two albums are two masterpieces of the NWOBHM and will leave the question forever in the air. With Dickinson they released a few masterpieces of their own, but they already were something else. Here, the mix of seventies hard rock and punk attitude gave birth to one of the best debut albums in history

BANGER RIFFS

I’m really surprised that I don’t think I’ve ever listened to a single track from these guys. I dig this. What a good listen.

one of the <b>best</b>!

Listening to this album really has me realize that that kid in junior high that first heard of Iron Maiden from t-shirts worn by fellow students (and other metal artists in general) and not giving the music a chance because of the imagery spooked me, really missed hearing some good music. Great guitar work and a solid rhythm section for the whole album. Prowler kicks off the album with a great guitar riff and beat, and sets the stage for the album. Remember Tomorrow is a classic metal ballad with a minor key progression. Running Free and Transylvania are my favorites. What a great album!

in a not-at-all shocking move surprising no one, i thought this album was excellent and one of the best on 1001 albums so far (like 150 albums in). i've loved maiden for decades despite some boomery comments on social media and the first few albums being a bit rough around the edges. with that said, the music is great here. you can really see how this laid the groundwork for their later albums and really the entire NWOBHM genre as a whole. the guitar harmonies are something maiden do extremely well and will become a staple of their songwriting moving forward. drums hit hard and everyone sounds good, though this is pre-bruce dickinson so not quite the same impact on the vocals front. prowler is an amazing kickoff to the album and really sets you up for what's to come. remember tomorrow is fine but a little boring imo. running free has that iconic pounding drum part and a great singalong chorus. phantom of the opera might be the best track here, and really the first instance of a maiden epic. interesting musical variation between sections, "higher brow" lyrics based on literature and theatre, and a longer runtime would become staples for iconic similar tracks in the future. transylvania just straight up slaps. strange world was another one that didn't really make an impact on me, but they bring it back with charlotte the harlot. along with prowler, this makes two songs about women of the night on this album? closing it out, we have iron maiden by iron maiden from their seminal album iron maiden. solid track here, great music, lyrics are kinda goofy, but it's another song that's hella fun to sing along to. favorites: basically everything here. remember tomorrow and strange world are the low points for me. best is probably phantom

Rocks like a mf from start to finish.

Maiden = 5. One of their early albums but great

It's not the best Maiden album, but this definitely set the stage for what's to come. Songs with soaring, operatic vocals. Tight harmonies and even tighter rhythm section. I adore this band, but this album feels more like a blueprint than a complete thought. That being said, I loved it and cherished being able to listen to something with distorted guitars for once. Favorite Tracks: Phantom of the Opera, Strange World, Iron Maiden

Growing up with family that frequently played 70s-80s metal means there’s no way I can rate this album anything other than 5.

Rock on!

Great album.

I thought Iron Maiden was death metal... this band is awesome.

Banger fo sho

metal (fire emoji)

Liked it a lot! Sounds like the moment classic rock took a hard turn, but it's still pretty simple and melodic. Not super crazy about dude's voice, but it sounded better to my ear by the end of it.

I didn’t know I would love this album as much as I did. I thought it would be too heavy for me but I actually really liked it! I’m going to be positive and optimistic because we’ve been getting good albums lately.

Ahead of their time I reckon. Obvious influence on Ride the Lightning

Fantastic album, great energy, loads of catchy parts

classic iron maiden, a real bop!

I never really got into Iron Maiden it was another one of those bands my friends were into that I didn't feel a need to dive into. This album was such a blast, not even sure what I was expecting but so enjoyable. Fave tracks: Running Free,Phantome of Opera, and Strange World

I've been a Maiden fan since my pre-teens, just about, but I was always somewhat of a Bruce Dickinson supremacist, and didn't spend much time with their earliest albums. That was probably a mistake, because this really slaps! 🤘 I still prefer Dickinson over Di'Anno, but it's not like he's awful, and everything else I love about the band is in full effect, right from the get go. Fave tracks - "Phantom of the Opera" is probably the most iconic. Love the cinematic languor of "Strange World", and "Remember Tomorrow" stood out to me on the most recent listen, too...

Great balance of melody and heavy riffs that attaches you to every song on the album. Vocals just add that extra cherry on top

Phantom Of The Opera

This album shreds in all the best ways.

Maravilloso

Seminal Maiden, fantastic and familiar.

Leaving the disrespect of a British album on July 4 aside, this album absolutely rocked. It likely benefited from my low expectations and frustration at getting a second consecutive metal album, but I really enjoyed this album. The shredding was fantastic and over the top without becoming corny and the Melodies of these songs were great too, and some were almost poppy. It sounds like there were multiple lead players which was fun too. My favorite tracks were “Running Free” and “Phantom of the opera”.

Really enjoyed this

Elsker energien, elsker alt

Pure genius!

First Iron Maiden album. Singer sounds different. More Rock 'n' Roll style compared to their later story telling vibe. Very cool to listen to their beginnings. Would listen again.

Im biased because its nostalgic but it never disappoints and dont tell anyone I prefer paul diannos vocals even though they arent as iconic or unique

classic!

EPIC. nuff said.

Hell yeah!

Yeah. So good. Makes me want to go for a run and hit some stuff. But then changes to mellow . 10/10

Absolute classic album. Paul Di’Anno is a fantastic singer and this album showcases all of the fantastic traits, and sometimes the shortcomings of Iron Maiden. Absolutely fantastic album.

Surprised how much I liked this - I thought it was going to be a bit Raaaa but they’re so tight and musical 🎶

Short Fast Classic

This is that kind of debut where it's really amazing, but at the same time it's not definitely clear how the band will progress onwards; will it be heavier, faster and meaner with winding solos or will it be proggy, slow and epic with winding solos? Now we know Iron Maiden leaned heavily into the former, and they did it impeccably. They do show here that they are a band with many talents and qualities. And that's probably why they have managed to release such engaging music throughout their career.

Fuck Yes!! Up the Irons!! Listened 25x and seen them 1x

Dijk van een debuut! Zeer herkenbare stijl van toen al

Shocked I didn’t hate it.

classic!!

The first of many great albums.

Absolutely love this album.

This is sort of an odd choice; of the Paul albums I prefer Killers, which I thought was the general consensus. There's also better Maiden albums that presumably didn't make it here. That said: There's still a lot to like. It's far from a bad album, There's just better (and much worse) Maiden albums. It's probably a 4 but there's no way I'm giving Maiden anything less than 5. Up the irons.

Rockin'

It is exactly what you expect it to be!

I know its unfair cause im already a fan, but 5

Vale a pena demais ouvir.

Songs: Running Free, Transylvania, Iron Maiden, Phantom of the Opera.

Full of barn burners.

De Facto 1980 rock/metal Lots of tempo/timing/mood changes

Really good songs and most of them were first hearings

Freakin rulez

Really nice throwback to the younger power metal years. Loved it...

I'm cool with Iron Maiden

Even without ol Bruce-y boy, they sure as shit set the tone for all their music to come. The confidence in their foundations is exemplified very well.

It’s hard to not prefer the Bruce fronted band but the first two albums kick so much ass too. Great songs that they still play live like Running Free and Ofc Iron Maiden is just a testament to how timeless this album is

As a child of the 80s, I was not into Iron Maiden. They kind of scared me. Maybe it was the ghoulish album art, or the bits of songs that I heard that were so heavy and minor-key. So I appreciated this re-introduction. What surprised me the most is how *musical* this album is. Melodies, harmonies (largely in the guitars), contrast, big soundscapes that they explore and fill with innovation. The songs sound thoughtfully constructed -- in particular, the tempo changes feel purposeful. This is good stuff.

This was a very good album. My favourite genre is metal and i had been meaning to listen to iron maiden and im glad i did as this album was no skip good songs all the way through and definitely met my expectations. I can see why their one of the biggest metal bands. It is exactly the sort of music i look for when i listen to metal - nothing over the top but nothing too basic.

I much prefer the meals Metallica made with these ingredients to Maiden’s later fare, but I don’t regret breakfasting with the Leyton lads today.

I enjoyed this a lot more than Number of the Beast for some reason. It's both more proggy and more punky than the fully formed Iron Maiden we would come to know (and love, in some cases). Maybe the vocals also sound less cliched to me, being used to Bruce's over-the-top stylings on most IR tracks I've heard over the years. As my 1001 colleague said, you can hear the building blocks of Metallica here, especially on the softer parts. I'm also a big fan of the band name being the name of the album and the name of a track on the album - triple threat.

Iron Maiden has been a staple for metal fans, featured in every older brothers catalogue this band still resigns supreme amongst it's peers. A true classic ment for the ages

It is good, but I won’t seek it out

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeahhhhh

There are other Maiden songs I like more, but this was pretty good.

This rocks. Especially Phantom of the Opera.

Maiden's first album. I love it! Different than the Dickinson era but you hear the instrumentals coming along. Early ideas brewing and developing. 7/10

Always takes adjustment listening to the early stuff without Bruce but a cracking album

I think I like Iron Maiden which is insane to me. I never would’ve thought to listen to something like this before starting this list.

There are elements of Maiden's future greatness already brewing on this album. If the phrase "let them cook" was an album it would be this one.

I like Iron Maiden but I only really know their big tracks (quite a few of them I should add, rather than just one or two). I only knew Phantom of the Opera on this album and there were quite a few songs where the vocals and even the music didn't quite have the Iron Maiden sound that is famous. I guess this is because it is an earlier album. Anyhow, I enjoyed it.

I understand why they would put this album on the list due to its cultural significance. I do believe that there are other iron maiden albums that are more worthy.

To be honest I didn’t think I would like when I saw it was mental music but surprisingly I actually liked pretty much very song on the album

This debut album sounds more like 70s Deep Purple hard rock with a bit of prog thrown in than 80s heavy metal. This is a good thing. Some good guitar riffs from dual guitarist and the singer isn't as over the top as his successor.

Remember seeing Maiden in their club days and the debut captures some of that raw energy. Always thought Dianno suited the band better even if Dickenson is the better vocalist. Not every track is a winner and lyrically this can be a bit cringeable now but it's a quality rock/metal album with a punkish edge that still stands up

I did know they have a rather heavy sound but some songs were totally unexpected.

I love the Bruce Dickinson iteration of Iron Maiden too but these first two albums are killer. PUN INTENDED !!!! They have a great punky energy here compared to some of the other big heavy metal groups around this time that I am aware of (i.e. only the big ones).

Notable Textzeile: Stalks of light come from the ground When I cry, there isn't a sound All my feelings cannot be held I'm happy in my new strange world Ich liebe an dieser Liste immer wieder das Algorithmusverwirrende von Lana Del Ray direkt auf Iron Maiden umzuschalten.

I've always found Iron Maiden imagery (album covers, T-shirts etc.) dead ugly, childish and cheap, and therefore I assumed that the music was also crap. Of course I vaguely knew a few songs which actually thought were OK. Well, I was wrong. This is really good hard rock (more than metal, to me). Will listen much more to Iron Maiden now!

Buenardo, me hace mucho recuerdo a mi papá

Good album 👍🏿

7 - good but not as good as name of beast

muiiitooo fodaaa mesmo melhores: phantom of the opera prowler strange world

7/10 Being more familiar with Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson era, listening to their Paul Di'Anno-fronted debut was a pretty interesting experience. Whilst having an unmistakable metal core, the influence of both punk and prog on their early sound, and how that would go on to shape the emerging wave of British heavy metal of the early 80s, was incredibly clear across this record. Paul Di'Anno offers a far punkier sound, that's more raw and gritty than the flamboyant melodrama that Dickinson would bring to the party, but it's not just the vocals that offer that glimpse of the musical influences. There are sections of stripped-back, pacy punk riffs, mixed up with moments of extended development and melodic and harmonic work that bring in that more prog and psychedelic sound. It's a really cool blend that, while still feeling a touch rough around the edges and not as coherent or developed as their later work, still serves to create a listening experience that is both invigorating and engaging in equal measure. You certainly get glimpses of where the band is heading, with tracks like Remember Tomorrow and their first true epic, Phantom Of The Opera, but knowing where the journey would take them, it's often the case that I found myself yearning for the more refined and consistent sound that was to come. That being said, there was still a lot to love about this, and there is enough great musicianship, driving rhythms and quality riffs to keep any classic metal fan satisfied. Prowler - While a touch rough around the edges, the abundance of great riffs, the pace and the power of this are so solid. While it's a cracking slice of metal, there's an edge of punk to it too, particularly from Paul Di'Anno's vocal. It's certainly more raw than their later work, but it's executed well and has some quality hooks in there to go with the drive and attitude. Remember Tomorrow - Now we're almost leaning a little towards a prog sound with a touch of drama to it. It's songs like this where we can see the extra edge that Bruce Dickinson would bring to the band, as his vocals work so much better with the soaring melodrama of their most bombastic work. There are some epic riffs in here and, while it is a little untidy in places, it's another enjoyable slice of proto-Maiden, showcasing their dynamic and technical range. Running Free - This is an ok track, but it's a bit of a one-trick pony and doesn't really offer a vast amount of range or variation. There are cool riffs and great playing, but it just feels a touch on the bland side, particularly from the vocal. There are some nice little moments from the different instruments, but it's not really enough to breathe much more life into it. Phantom Of The Opera - This is really the first example of the epic work that Maiden would go on to produce. Great riffs, punchy beats and a sprawling and epic composition, it's a really excellent track. While not as refined or adventurous as they would become, it's still a very well-presented journey. They go through so many different movements throughout, always keeping things shifting into fresh new places while maintaining the core of the theme. Really good stuff. Transylvania - This is jam-packed full of great riffs. There are also fantastic moments from both the drums and bass that add extra flavour to what is already a chunky slice of metal. No vocals here, but it's a pretty adventurous instrumental, and that guitar solo goes so, so hard. This kind of feels like the starting of point of where a band like Dream Theater would go. Solid. Strange World - And we more or less roll straight on into this one. It's a slower, more proggy-edged, slightly psychedelic rock sound. It could do with a touch more range to really lean into that prog sound for me, but when we get into the guitar solo, it really comes into its own. Melody and counterpoint are particularly engaging during the vocal sections, with the instruments dancing around the vocal in a really evocative way. A lovely follow-up to Transylvania. Charlotte The Harlot - We're back to a more punky song now. There are some cool little rhythmic shuffles in the riffs that add a layer of complexity to the flow of the song, though, and we also get something a bit more proggy in places too. There's some decent stuff in here, but I feel like the main chorus hook is a bit on the weak side and, as a result, this doesn't feel as focused as much of the rest of the record. I'm not completely sold by Di'Anno's vocal here either. Iron Maiden - Who doesn't love a self-titled song on a self-titled album? There are some great riffs here, and it flies along at a great clip. I do think it's a tiny bit rough around the edges in places, but that perhaps emphasises the pace, actually. Steve Harris finds some space to show off his bass chops, which is fun. It's a punky-poppy little chorus that has a cool musical hook, but adds grit and weight. A solid way to round out the album, and this one sounds like it would be great fun live.

A great debut for a metal band. Feels quite ahead of its time, having been released in only 1980. Some of the songs feel unpolished and out of place, but on the whole there's lots of quality metal/hard rock.

Probably my first real exposure to Iron Maiden outside of some singles and general name recognition. Wow - this album rocked! Sincerely enjoyed the music, each song, and learning more about the making of the album and the band.

I'll never be an iron Maiden's fan for sure but yeah this is a very good album.

Yeh it's quite good. Not as good as the Bruce Dickinson era.

Way better than I anticipated all the way through.

Usually not a big fan of heavy metal, but this was very melodic and pleasant. The cover art is ugly as all hell, though.

Very solid. Excited to hear the other singer. Only downside.

A pretty top tier album to run to. Didn't think this type of music would be my style, but it's an excellent album Favorite Songs: Running Free, Charlotte the Harlot

Yeah, baby! Heaps better than I was expecting.

Much less metal than I was expecting, and not just because of its age. This plays much more like hard rock, punk and prog album than classic metal. This is not a criticism by any means, I enjoy the record it's just surprising knowing what Iron Maiden later molded into. Everyone does a great job here with and the album is worth listening to even to the extent of digging into it and dissecting the evolution of Iron Maiden, and heavy metal and 80's metal in general. The only dig I have is that these sounds aren't really unique as they were already done, and in some cases already perfected even before this album came out.

Man, hearing "Prowler" immediately triggered a massive brain itch for me. I recognized that opening riff instantly but could not place it to save my life, and it was about to drive me absolutely crazy. Thank God for AI, because I finally looked it up and it’s the exact same progression Papa Roach used for "Between Angels and Insects"! Honestly, I’m way more familiar with Maiden's later, big-production stadium stuff than their debut, so going back to this raw punk-adjacent energy was cool. Aside from "Phantom of the Opera," most of this was pretty fresh to my ears. Even though it dropped right at the start of the decade in 1980, you can clearly hear the blueprint for the next ten years of heavy music. That signature Steve Harris "galloping" bass sound is already fully formed here, and you can see exactly how it influenced the thrash metal wave that blew up just a couple of years later. Also, "Charlotte the Harlot" was a total blast. Just a fun, tongue-in-cheek track that doesn't take itself too seriously. Favorite song: "Prowler"

Not bad Was surprised how much I enjoyed it

Great musicianship here. Fantastic guitar, especially right out of the gate on “Prowler”. The guitar alone really kept me engaged for the entire album. I still can’t get into the singer….probably never will. 3.5 rounded up. Pleasant surprise. Didn’t expect to enjoy this one

Iron Maiden's debut only vaguely hints at what Maiden would become, and that's part of its appeal. It's Maiden before the operatic vocals and progressive rock sophistication. A different band, not better or worse, but different. And this is a very solid debut.

Solid. Creepy. Weird to hear iron maiden without Bruce

Pretty good. Maybe in garage band?

Typischer 80er Heavy-Metal! Passt!

Wow! This album absolutely shoots out of a gun and has such an amazing sound. At the start I was thinking this would be a definite 5/5 but near the end I think it got a bit less amazing. Wish i could do 4.5.

Really good. Interesting voice, great drumming and solid guitar. Overall enjoyable and would listen again.

Having only heard 'The Trooper' from Iron Maiden previous to this, I wasn't entirely sure how a full album would work. I'm pleased to say it worked great, there's some absolute rippers on this, not least 'Phantom of the Opera'.

Most of the corner stones of Iron Maiden's sound are already in place by their debut. As a long-time Maiden fan, I tend to spend more time with the Bruce Dickinson era, but the band proves that they are more than the voice of the frontman.

some fantastic riffs

Liked this a lot more than I thought I would

This is very good.

Not a big fan of the genre but I kind of liked it. The bass sound is iconic.

This is my second Iron Maiden album for this exercise. This earlier album starts with a much more hard rock sound as opposed to metal, maybe because they hadn’t decided on/perfected their ultimate sound. By side two, some speed metal elements start to creep in. The songs are actually well written and played. I found this an enjoyable album.

early metal and its rock as fuck. Tons of distortion and bad attitude, but they're one of the best to do it! It clocks in at a lean 37 minutes which works in its favor. They also sound way more angsty than they do later.

Classic heavy metal. Shredding guitar solos. They sound so damn young and hungry on this one. If I was an acne faced teen with a blond mullet and denim vest this would be my favorite album of all time. As it stands I’m a clear skinned adult with a brown mullet and no vest so I just think it’s a pretty good album

Some solid riffs. Consistent quality start to end

blood pumping energetic heavy metal. What i think is remarkable about this album, are the more introspective and longer songs. It's a pleasure that this type of album was able to contain these songs, with those solos that are really emotional. i also find the technical level quite apt for a debut album enjoyable

Iron Maiden were destined for greatness right from the beginning. The first of two records with Paul Di'anno on vocals, their self-titled debut has a roughness and streetwise feel that later albums with Dickinson don't have. Add in the Judas Priest inspired dual guitar attack and you have a pretty great record. Side B falters a bit, but it would still find itself in the upper half of the Maiden discography.

I'm always surprised by the melodic and musical sensibilities of a band called Iron Maiden. I always expect them to be really hard and thrashy and they're just great classic rock. I really liked this album. Four stars.

Iron Maiden is hit, or miss(but a hell of a lot better than Iron Butterfly). The first half of this album is just pure kick-ass heavy metal. The second half has its ups, and downs, including the title track(and band name track). Now, I know why I see so many people wearing Iron Maiden shirts. Favorite Track: "Phantom Of The Opera".

I would listen to a lot more metal if it sounded more like this.

Bass and bass and bass... Steve Harris is fucking awesome. The galloping bass, just fantastic. What a groove, what a feel. Di'Anno is a good singer...in some areas, I like him better than Dickinson. Dickinson, while an amazing singer, too goddamn theatrical from time to time. This album was a blast. Have heard a few songs off it, but never listened straight through.

A pretty standard but enjoyable metal album. The overly theatrical vocals have always turned me off Maiden a bit but they weren't too bad here. Besides they're not exactly the focus here, as the main selling point of this album is the long instrumental passages. They're not as expensive here as they would be on later Maiden albums but there's still some pretty great ones here, especially Phantom of the Opera. This isn't the most consistent album in the world as there are a couple of dud tracks here but for the most part I'd say I enjoyed this. Favs: Phantom of the Opera, Iron Maiden, Remember Tomorrow, Prowler Least Fav: Running Free 7.3/10

This album is the perfect driving music. Although I did not care much for prowler, Remember tomorrow and running free were amazing. I couldn't get enough of those two. Phantom of the opera was still pretty good. I usually do not like songs without lyrics but Transylvania is my exception. It is brilliant. Stange world and Charlotte the harlot are lower on my list. Iron Maiden as the self titled song was a great ending to the album. It captures their sound and almost provides a purpose for the band.

its iron maiden

Good stuff

This shit fucking rips hell yeah

Fantastic debut album.

Well this should be fun. Haven’t heard this yet. What can I say - one should not judge an album by its cover! I actually really liked this. It fully will go into rotation- minus the final track - wtf? But otherwise, great musicianship, everything I want from rock and roll extended play! 4 solid stars.

Screamer of a debut album.

It's about time this website finally recommended a heavy metal album, and it is one that pretty much launched the NWOBHM genre, and was the beginning of a legendary career that has lasted over 50 years. This is a very different version of Iron maiden to the killer riffs, operatic vocals, and epic themes that they are famous for. This had more elements of punk and less progressive themes, and despite not yet having Bruce Dickinson provide the high soaring vocals, this is still a pretty damn solid album. I will jhave give it four stars though because otherwise giving it five would mean I would have to find a way to give Powerslave and Somewhere in Time 6 stars.

Good, taught, precise metal. I've only even owned one Iron Maiden album (Powerslave) and this is the first non-Bruce Dickinson Iron Maiden album I've heard. Better than I expected, less operatic, more focused and soulful. Yeah, I'd definitely listen to this again. Don't like this as much as other Iron Maiden I'm familiar with, but it fits. 4/5

Really liked this album actually it’s got a way of going from hard rock to completely vibey guitar solos/rifts that I enjoyed a ton.

One of the greats!

enjoyed this way more than I expected. This first album is more punk (dare I say) than what I typically think of when I think 80s metal. Well put together and earns a spot on this list for sure.

Lowkey propulsive.

I mean yeah I get it. Heavy but I really like it

3.75. I’ve got to be in the right mood to listen to Iron Maiden normally, and even then it’s one of two or three songs I want to listen to. None are on this album, but that didn’t matter.

Ihan jees vääntöö, jota ol nuorena klobbona vaikee sulattaa. Hauskasti saatu vähän semmonen punkin ja hevanderin ristisiitos aikaseks ja saundi on semmonen kunnon "tältä näyttää briteissä seisarikasari vaihteessa". Dijannu on laulajana mikä on, mut sopii ihan. Kiittäen arvioimme.

It was really good! Every song was a banger, but my favorites were: Prowler, Remember Tomorrow, Phantom of the Opera, and Strange World. Overall, I really liked this album and I would probably give it a 4.2/5! 👍🙂🤟

Solid album

I enjoyed this record. It's quick, rhythmic and energetic. Favourite Track(s): Phantom of the Opera, Iron Maiden Least Favourite Track(s): Strange World

This is a really weird review for me cause I love Iron Maiden but I think this is their least impressive album from their early career. Like this album is great, but every album after this just got better and better. Killers, number of the beast, piece of mind, are all better albums as well as being better metal albums which are much heavier. But it does have a special place in my heart cause it lead to Iron Maiden becoming IRON MAIDEN. Like you see flashes of their greatness that they will achieve in their very near future. I but I do feel like this album is just too soft to be a true 5/5. It’s so close though…

It took 350 albums to get a first (I hope) Iron Maiden album and it just so happens to be not one of my favourites. I can see why its here though. Earlier Maiden is a little more rocky and punky. But even here, Phantom, Transylvania are defining heavy metal. The production is flat as well, making the drums cardboard and the bass chuggy. But that's just hte 80s I guess. I'm on the record in being in a minority who prefers post-2000s Maiden. The longer, more proggy, more epic sound. Then the hits. Then Blaze and this. But still. It's Maiden. Even No Prayer would get a 3.

I am familiar with a bunch of maidens later stuff and this very much feels like a band trying to find that sound. Every so often they nail it and the difference is huge. A lot of the rest of the time they sound like a young band struggling with guitar sounds and production techniques. The songs are still fun though, I feel like I'm largely marking it down because I know they get better, and Bruce adds better vocals when he joins, but I dunno if that's really fair. I'll give it a 4.

Never been a metal head. I'm the normiest of normies. Basically just like Metallica and Tool. Having said that, I can see why they were on the heights of the greats of the 80s. Great and catchy thrash songs, great heavy slow songs, a little bit of everything, and loved the closer. Curious to listen to more of the Maiden.

You guys, I think I like Iron Maiden ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I enjoyed that more than I was expecting. It's like heavy prog rock with some good melodies. I think Bruce Dickinson's voice was better suited for what the band would become.

🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘 Metal is one of my favorite genres so I was super pump d for this one. Although I love metal, Iron Maiden is not my top top band so this was still a bit of a journey of discovery for me.

Incandescent

FAVORITE TRACKS: PROWLER, REMEMBER TOMORROW, RUNNING FREE, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, STRANGE WORLD. LEAST FAV TRACK: CHARLOTTE THE HARLOT

I'd always heard that Iron Maidens earlier albums are a bit weak but I thought this was great! Well, except for "Charlotte the Harlot...."

I have had this funny feeling for a while that I needed to get more exposure to Iron Maiden. I like heavy metal, like progressive rock and fantasy themes, and liked Number of the Beast and Run to the Hills. From this listen, it's clear I need a deep dive. Thanks 1001!

8 very good actually. It mades me enjoy Metal

Feels less refined than other Iron Maiden songs I’ve heard, but it still has the energy to make it good

Excelente album debut

Considered a classic for a reason. ‘Nuff said.

80s metal masters debut for you to chew and break on thru.

This has a dark edginess to it, similar to contemporary artists like Black Sabbath, but if you slid it one notch in the direction of Brit Punk that would come a little later. Lots of big cinematic parts too, à la Dark Side. Pretty neat. Also, whoever did the 2015 remaster did a phenomenal job.

I can’t fathom what it must have felt like to hear this for the first time in 1980. I’ve heard Maiden records but not this first one. Phantom was a stand out for me. Unreal

Not their best album but still good, I wish they would have chosen Fear of the Dark instead. Strange world as my favourite.

Definitely dated, a little boring and repetitive but with one swift kick England and Iron Maiden invented 4 new subgenres of metal. Progressive, power/theatrical metal, and thrash metal, all with the release of something that includes a slow ballad. To think metal before this was simply just being dark and mysterious but playing classic rock and blues licks. Iron Maiden may have not birthed the middle period of metal but they sure did develop it. 4 stars on principle, product, and impact.

Love how melodic Maiden is.

Oh hell yeah. Could be a 5 honestly. Best song: Phantom of the Opera

Not bad, but I feel like I've heard better Iron Maiden. I do like the driving force kind of feeling in Transylvania. Iron Maiden as a whole I feel is really good at making songs feel like you're in the passenger car of a speeding car.

I can't believe that I am about to write this, but I didn't hate this album and rather enjoyed it. The songs are surprisingly good and even the annoying guitar showing off was not too bad. It just made me wantbto listen to it again, and maybe now I am a metalhead... This jouney of the 1001 albuns have some surprises... 4/5

I find it fun and interesting, and I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. The melodies are great it is consistent, and the ambition is there. I just think by the end of it it does get a bit repetitive and I would have liked a bit more variety in sound

I am on a heavy rock kick right now, keep it coming I guess. I really thought this would be heavier, I think I've only listened to a handful of Iron Maiden before this. This is pretty darn good though, with a heavy dose of guitar of course.

When to listen: in a moment of needing to kick ass. This experience is teaching me that I like 70s/80s metal?! Who knew. This was enjoyable to listen to and had a nice variety to the sound of the overall album

Great album. Heard it many times before and still enjoy it

Another good metal album, though short and not as standout as the other iron maiden album. Still good stuff.

Classic tunes that set the stage for some future legendary albums. Remember Tomorrow is an underrated song that features the band's exceptional ability to slow down with thoughtful and technical guitar riffs that quickly ramp into thrashing solos and driving bass. While the tracks from this album don't rise to the level of many future Iron Maiden classics, the fundamental elements of those songs are clearly established in this album and its influence on artists of similar music from the era is clear.

I was surprised by how much I liked this album. This was a lot of fun and also extremely technical. I’m very impressed. I guess it goes to that saying that this was my first time sitting down to listen to iron maiden on purpose

Pretty groundbreaking stuff, though I think the Bruce Dickinson era is better and far more influential. That said, one can't deny this album came out in what ended up having a defining role in the genre later. This is an album that is unlikely to be much in my playlist, though allowing a few tracks, which would give it a 3. However, influence-wise, it gets a half star, which would rounds it up to 4.

Running Free

This is #day579 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… the other day I was having a beer with a friend at a local pub when one of Maiden's songs came on TV, and I told him how fun it is that they always have that character on the record cover, kind of like a storyline you don't deviate from. Somehow, this band never clicked with me, though. Maybe I just never gave them a proper try? Because, in reality, this is my first time listening to their album front to back, and it's cool that it happens to be the debut. Now, what can I say? I didn't think I'd enjoy it as much as I did! Everything you want from heavy metal. "Prowler" is my biggest standout here. This is a 4 out of 5. Looking forward to #day580.

The original Iron Maiden Eddie looks soooo dope. Love this album too. This was a treat

love rock

Some of the songs I added to my personal playlist but most of the songs are kind of similar.

Never really listened to IM before - quite enjoyed it!

Brilliant debut album and an eye opener to Iron Maiden for me. The album is packed with absolute headbangers and if you were to sum the whole thing up, it's all about the amazing guitar. It lacks a bit of variety but as a short & sweet metal package, it's great.

I've never really been an Iron Maiden fan, I like the singles as much as the next guy, but their albums have never really done anything for me. I did surprisingly enjoy this one enough, it does have a couple of stinkers, but overall it is pretty solid. Remember Tomorrow is the best song and it reminds me of Candlemass. Mid 4.

This is my first time listening to this album, but I'm fully expecting to be giving it at least 4 stars when it's finished. I love the Iron Maiden songs that I do know, the vast majority of which is with Bruce Dickinson, though Killers (the song) is also really good, and I've always appreciated Paul Di'Anno's vocals. • Prowler starts off as a typical, pretty good opening track, but once it reaches the guitar solo it just takes off and is bursting with energy. • Remember Tomorrow is very good. I wasn't really expecting a slower track like this from this album, for some reason I thought it would be the sort of song they'd start writing more once Bruce Dickinson joined. Paul's vocals are really good, I've not heard him singing melodically like this before • It's funny how easily I can be won over by guitar harmonies. Running Free isn't really clicking with me like the first two songs, but the instant the guitar harmony started I had a big smile on my face • I really like the bass/guitar unison line throughout Phantom of the Opera • The feel change when the drums come in during Transylvania was really cool. I also wasn't expecting this song to be an instrumental, that was a nice break in the album. • Paul's vocals in Strange World have so much reverb oh my god. • Charlotte the Harlot is a fun song, the verses are really good. The chorus isn't as strong in my opinion but it's short and the song gets back into the groove quickly enough. • The title track honestly wasn't quite as good as I was hoping it would be, but I can definitely see it growing on me. This was a great listen. It very much sounds like a prototype for what the band's sound would evolve into over the next few years. It's not nearly as refined as it would be by the time Number of the Beast rolled around, but the DNA is all there. The guitar harmonies, galloping, Steve Harris's blistering bass. Everything except the vocals (which Paul Di'Anno did an excellent job with) is like a sneak peak for how great the band would become. Unfortunately, they weren't that great yet, and the second half of this album did feel a bit lacking. I don't feel that I can quite justify giving this album five stars, but it is a very strong four at minimum. Favourite song: Phantom of the Opera

Wasn't expecting to like this as much as I did - always had this idea of iron maiden being super metal and I do like metal but sometimes it's too much for me. this was a lot chiller than expected and really easy to listen to. Will defos listen again.

10/10 album covers

hard album artwork, harder riffs

sympa en vrai

This kinda slaps. Emotional highs and lows, pacy slamming. No particular standouts at this point

2/3. Surprisingly good, not sure why I had a prejudice against them but whatever it was they beat it down pretty quick. Great riffs, a touch of prog, good vocals, and a real focus on music overall. A genuinely cool album.

Enjoyed this

We like Iron Maiden

Good. we will rock you or something

Classic

Hyvä, vaikkei läheskään paras Iron Maidenin levyistä. 3,5/5.

4/5. Great debut album, the bass playing on here is especially top notch. basically sets the blueprint that future Iron Maiden albums would run with and do better/crazier things with. favorite song is probably the multi-phased center piece of the album “phantom of the opera”.

I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. I figured I was in for hard rock but really its a solid all-around album. The spaciness of Strange World was reminiscent of Pink Floyd for sure. Title track was the showcase. I'll probably check more of this band out this summer.

Once was into these in my brief heavy metal phase , they do the genre proud and have stood the test of time . A. Few head banging tunes took me back to my early teens .always produced great album covers as well

I remember a friend of mine playing me this back in the day. I though Metal had to be hard, fast, and loud. This made me stop and think. YEARS later someone used the term prog metal to describe tool and I thought of Iron Maiden. Now I don't say that Maiden is prog, they aren't, but they HAVE to be cousins. So I enjoyed this album. It's great. I prefer later Maiden, but you can tell where they are going with their sound and lyrics from this album. I enjoyed most of the songs Phantom of the Opera opened up the album for me personally. I'm off to their Piece of Mind album now.

7.5/10 - I have always felt odd about IM because I hate their branding, but I thought this was a very good album. I thought they showed good ability to thrash and also to slow it down with more melodic songs. This is an album I would listen to multiple times a year.

Prowler - 5/5 Remember Tomorrow - 4/5 Running Free - 3/5 Phantom of the Opera - 5/5 Transylvania - 5/5 Strange World - 3/5 Charlotte the Harlot - 4/5 Iron Maiden - 4/5 Average score: 4.1/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ it's a great debut album for them. looking forward to The Number of the Beast tho, i feel like that's the point where they're at their best

One the classic early metal albums 🎸

Really enjoyed this metal relic! So influential!

Actually, I kinda liked it. Stand-outs - Transylvania - Strange World

Classic Maiden. That said, it might be a little too classic for my taste. I love Maiden but I feel like (most great bandss) they honed their craft and the albums/songs got better. This feels like a rough draft comparatively. Damn good for a rough draft but still. Phantom of the Opera, Running Free and Iron Maiden all bangers aqnd so important to the Maiden catalog.

Great guitar work.

Given the context of this album being recorded in 1980 it holds up fairly well. The end of disco gives way to a rebellious rock. The marketing and imagery for Iron Maiden is second only to the Grateful Dead.

A lot of scales, but good guitar play, if you like it. Can hear the influence of Black Sabbath and Alice Cooper, which is an interesting blend.
