I often jump in the bath with my dad and his friend Rick. We would thrash around listening to 00's hits and tickling eachother's balls. One time Julian Casablancas joined us. He brought ice cream. It was just good clean, soapy, creamy fun. Much like this record.

Ahhh the saviour of music. Back in 2001, when we were swiftly sinking into a bland quicksand of Travis, Coldplay and Osama Bin Laden, in stepped a deliberately scuffed pair of Converse high tops to save the day. The landmark album of our generation. It's knowingly nonchalant, but somehow through that apathy, true brilliance manifests. With youthful exuberance and effervescent energy the album quakes with more stompers than an elephant stampede through an unsuspecting african village. It's my favourite album.

Little known fact, the body on the front cover belongs to the infamous Andi "SHACK" McCormick. SHACK's naked flesh was considered so arousing that the album could not be released with this cover in the US.

Saw this pop up and went "crap". But listened anyway. I appreciated it after some time and even liked some of some of it

Pretty good turn of the century rock n roll. Somewhere between a three and a four, but they didn’t really kill it, so this gets a three.

Such a cool guitar and bass tone.

Did 'New York City Cops' cause a fuss at the time? That aside. I'm still, 20+ years later, unsure as to whether this was a futile squeak of resistance or a brave stand against a homogenising juggernaut. Either way, the dear lads were romantics, weren't they?

Definitely a classic. I think I might like later Strokes more but that's project just because I know it better.

I bought this album from one of those second hand CD shops where you could get big bundles of CDs for like a quid each in June 2013, on the day before my school prom. As a result, to me, this album sounds like me, aged 15, running around having a big fun time in the summer after exams. Without getting too personal, 2013 feels for me like my last year of proper childhood simplicity?? And this album reminds me of that even though the lyrics are very much not about that Okay RIGHT enough about me, what about the music?? The guitar solos are SO FULL OF ENERGY they're big and bouncy and amazing!! The Modern Age, Alone Together, Last Nite, all of them, they are BLOODY EXCELLENT Hard to Explain makes me very happy Someday is literally a sunny afternoon on the beach Can't really think of a dud on this one, I adore it

Oh boi I love this album. There are so many bangers, in fact every single track slaps. It still sounds as great as the first time I heard it. Someday and Modern Age are amazing but Hard to Explain is absolute PERFECTION. All hyped to see them in Spain now

This is just a really solid record. Every track is great, the songwriting is catchy and direct and the whole album flies by in such a joyous way. It took a few listens for this to click with me, and growing up I always preferred Room on Fire and First Impressions..., but ever since it clicked I've been revisiting these songs more and more. There's a beauty in its simplicity and it's clear how this became such an influential album; one of the first real classics of this century

Yes, this is it. This album has some true classics. This is quite the debut album for a group. I will say, not all songs are on the same level. I thought New York City Cops was the worst song on here, all others are great.

Another album I know well, still sounds brilliant. Love everything about it - the produced sound of the vocals (Iggy Pop on Lust for Life LP reminded me of this) the guitars, the drums, the bass, it’s all great & works as a whole. Mostly laid back, detached lyrics, a bit like a faster poppier Pavement but when he goes for it it really works. No song on here is over 4 minutes which keeps up the sing a long momentum, there’s not a bad track on here.

I've tried getting into this album since high school and I haven't. Maybe sixth time's the charm? UPDATE: Yeah, not really doing much for me. I feel like once you've heard "Last Nite" and maybe two other songs you pretty much get the gist of everything this band has to offer.

A couple of hits, easy to play though

While their garage rock style and catchy songwriting may have inspired troves of artists, The Strokes come up short and boring on Is This It.

Absolutely fantastic, most of the songs are the album are brilliant. Would happily listen if any of the songs on the track came on in a playlist, radio etc.

This album is full of refreshing, oddly moving early 2k rock; it's just my cup of tea!

Listening to this record, it is obvious just how much of a formative moment it was, how influential it was for rock music coming into the 2000s. I love the throwback to garage rock and post-punk sounds, the the live atmosphere in the production makes you feel like you are seeing them at a small club. Not to mention the great presence Casablancas has on the mic, and the fun guitar interplay. Ultimately, I think I like a lot of the stuff that this album broke ground for even more, and the album can get a bit “samey” by the end, but the undeniable influence here puts it squarely into a 5 star rating for me.

On the one hand, it was very cool to fill in a blind spot on an Era and sound that I am very familiar with, on the other hand it was a little bland across the board for my tastes. The album did have a few shiners though.

Fun album, I remember listening to it and being impressed with "what the kids are listening to these days". Maybe a bit too polished and the vocals can grate, but overall listenable end-to-end.

An album I own and have heard many times. I haven't listened to it in a while, so it was good to hear it again. It's almost a 5-star for me, but not quite. It lacks variety and doesn't finish as strong as it starts.

Another in the very long list of bands I'd heard of repeatedly throughout the years yet have no recollection of having heard their music. I like this album. A lot of tips o' the style pen to some cool garage rock/pre-punk indie stuff, yet they seem to have their own voice, which is good. Catchy but not in an annoying way. The lead singer's voice can sometimes get whiny and the screaming can be a bit much, but overall it suits what they're doing.

Wasn't too sure about the initial couple of songs, felt a bit shaky but once the album got going I really started to appreciate it and on a second listen I found the whole thing to be really good. Did think this was BritPop at first though. Memorable tunes and catchy lyrics; 'Someday', 'Last Nite', 'Hard To Explain', 'Trying Your Luck' & 'Take It Or Leave It' stood out. A lot of energy throughout. 'Barely Legal' made me somewhat uncomfortable. Note: 'When It Started' wasn't available on spotify for me.

Oh we're having a good old high school flashback with this album. Looking forward to what this does to my Spotify recommends.

I'd say that I never liked this album, but I owned it at one point, so something about it inspired me to buy it. I'm definitely not a fan now. I can't give it a 1 in good conscience, but it is a very low 2.

Great! So many good tracks

I love the sound of this album. It is ohrwurms from start to finish. There is a driving punk persistence to every song, thanks to the near metronomic accuracy of the rhythm section. Check out "When It Started" or "The Modern Age" to see what I mean. Riding on top, is the collection of guitars and vocals, all wrapped in a warm distortion that provides a cunning disguise for just how precise and polished the performances really are. Tying it all together are the production details that create a sense of depth as you listen to them. Put on some headphones and the track "Roma" and listen to the guitars play tug-of-war with your attention and dance around on the aural stage.

Really bland and monotonous. All style, no hooks.

Effortlessly cool, this band played a huge part in my life music wise in my twenties and still do today. As fresh now as it was then even though it wears every influence on its sleeve. An absolute joy to listen to from start to finish - how many tracks are just nailed on killer songs ? Tore up my rule book in 2001 in the same way Nirvana did ten years before. Utterly brilliant ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

An album of my youth, gives me a feeling of nostalgia and saudade for times gone. Julian Casablanca's melancholy vocals are top tier for the sound they cultivate. I didn't know the original album cover had a bare ass on it, kind of iconic, and kind of a bummer they changed it for the puritans.

It's a really solid freshman album. The songs are put together well, the production is admirably transparent, and the performances are energetic and skillful. There's nothing to dislike here.

Hard to Explain is my favorite from this one

Wow, the album that system it all. And by all, I mean the indistinguishable sameness of early-2000s rock.

Never has an album felt so familiar yet been so new. It came out at such the right time. So much music had felt stale and to me this album revitalised music. I saw the Strokes a few days before this came out and the day the album came out, I ended up listening to it for about 8 hours on repeat. When it came up as my album yesterday, I listened to it about 5 times along with a few of their other albums.

Despite the band all being entitled art school types with rich parents this still sounded amazingly fresh when it was released. I saw them perform the album in order in Sheffield just after it was released and they were fantastic. A classic album

The American Stereophonics. Some great tracks (I mean, Last Nite) and some fillers.

Maybe because I've heard it before before but it's bland, boring and almost a fake attempt at energy they don't have. It just feels forced. I wasnt a fan the first time I heard it and certainly am not this time either.

Bought this when it came out - they were hotly tipped by the NME. Played it obsessively for about a week. Haven't listened to it again since. Think it holds up *fairly* well. Their sound was quite retro on this album - could be mistaken for Lou Reed at times. Gets quite samey after the first three tracks, though. Last Nite perks it up again a little, but then the last few tracks were a grind.

A couple familiar tunes, but listening made me think of Hot Hot Heat. Throwback!

Love the Strokes and this album especially, the mix of proto punk, ska and Talking Heads College Rock is rather wonderful and was a positive step in the early Noughties! Last Night is a rocker that I can imagine started many a teenage party in 2001/2! Lovely stuff all through. Great Live band too!

I have always liked this album I just don't love it, some great tracks and some tracks that are just there

Oh come on. I was 17 when this came out, it's not even fair. I remember hearing The Modern Age, and it was the coolest thing I'd ever heard. I could try to be cynical, to quote Eddie Argos, "I can't stand the sound of the Velvet Underground. I can't stand the sound, the second time around." But for me, because of my age, and because I'd been trying hard to care about bland crap like Turin Brakes because that was the alternative (also feeling guilty about the fact I was starting to care more about hip hop, drum and bass and garage, because I thought you had to pick a lane back then because I was a small town idiot) they were such a breath of fresh air.

This is a solid album, fun to listen to. Good old fashioned garage rock for the millennium, a little edgy but with a strong pop sensibility. It definitely marked a turning point for music heading into the 2000s, a positive one. In the grand scheme though, I don't really have strong feelings for the Strokes. I'm not sure I've ever listened to this album all the way through but I knew almost every song. That speaks to how strong the album is, 8 out of the 11 songs are single worthy.

Reminds me of college and garden level bars in Boulder. Bars that got grandfathered in with smoking rooms when it became illegal to smoke inside in public. I liked it then and I like it now. I've listened to it a few times this week and I'm not tired of it. I feel like bands have tried to emulate the sound of the album since it was hit, and a few bands got a song or two, but not an entire album.

After the yearlong "end of the century" content from MTV, the nostalgia was there for another full year and along came "last nite" whose video exploited a nostalgia that we were actually too young to remember that of which it was a remembrance of. The rest is history as Is This It came to change the landscape of popular music in a more successful way than Kid A if not a longer one. Now 20 years after all of that I could say that the album is not as good as everyone thought it was, it actually drags I a couple of long moments, and it does not hold to the end after achieving its highest highs, maybe it could even be said that Room On Fire is more consistent even if not as soulful as this one. but what can be said against such perfect songs as Someday or Last Nite? I could try to give it a 2 or a 3 but the truth is that I’m still that 14 year old singing “when we was young oh man did we have fun” with all the honesty of the one who was never younger and did never became so again. To me, the jewel of the crown is Hard to Explain which is one of the most perfect songs I’ve ever heard, I still stop and surrender to it every time I hear it, and consider myself so lucky to have heard it live a couple of times. Hard To Explain is the reason why I’m giving this one a 5.

i have listened to this album many times. It is the peak of minimalistic rock of the early 2000s. The catchy, upbeat, and sonically pleasing tones of the album make for a great listen whenever you want.

This was a seminal album for me. Came at a very important time in my life when I met my later-to-be wife. I’d play this all the time when she came around. We found that groove.

Seemed fine. I never really listened to them before and I probably wouldn't seek them out after hearing this album.

I remember when this came out thinking what a breath of fresh air after the final years of the 1990s (Radiohead aside, of course) and all the post-alt-grunge and pop crap that was being played on the radio at that time (Bootylicious by Destiny's Child was No. 1 on the charts the week this came out). Great tracks start to finish. Think of all the bands they inspired. These guys and the White Stripes helped save American Rock-n-Roll.

Probably the album that kick-started the post-punk revival, influential in its own right, and it is brilliant. The Modern Age, Someday, Hard TonExplain etc… tunes everywhere. It’s hard to imagine the Arctic Monkeys and countless others, good or bad, without this album. Clever guitar licks and lyrics at every turn!

A very tight and tidy wee album. The Strokes know how to keep it simple and just write good songs. I always liked this band but they never made a particularly big impression on me first time around. rRe-listening to this album now I pretty much still feel same way. I don’t dislike any of it, but I don’t love it. Cool band though.

The first 21st century album tgat I've ever truly enjoyed, making me excited for indie rock that follows. Massive influence from garage rock and post-punk combined with alt rock that had been largely ignored in the decade prior. Songs are distinctive and exciting with constant instrumental shifts that match the emotional lyrics. Not a single weak song. Each has something unique I love about it. Great opening and closing too, allowing me to feel excited for what was to come and satisfied for how it ended.

The debut album from The Strokes is an upbeat indie rock production with dashes of punk rock. This album was released at a time when pop and dance/electronic music was becoming more popular than rock or alternative music. Because of this album release, a new wave of rock and alternative music took hold around the world. The classic band sound was revived for the new age.

Grateful for this one. Another certified classic. A band that sounds and feels years older than they were upon release but not because of some 'retro' sound. To this day, the weird attempts to make them out to be something closer to a classic rock revival on their debut is hard to truly wrap your head around now, but all the boomer rags wanted their new Led zep. They wanted to trumpet about how guitars were back, despite never ever leaving. Cringey shit. But the Strokes' age shone thru by way of their lyrical scope and seasoned tightness. Sonically it's such a cohesively considered record. A perfect album that could be played in any order to reach the appropriate conclusions. But moreover, an album of uncomfortable ennui. It's a sad album. It's realizing, too young, that hope is a blasted out crater while trying to consolidate that with a young life that's freewheeling but not so gleefly debauched as to turn full on edgy. Despite sounding deeply cool, it's never a jaded sound. If anything, it's the sound of not wanting to sound jaded.

Never ‘Erd of em mate. Despite what my Strokes wife beater says. I tried to be unbiased with my thoughts here. Not my favourite album of theirs but for a first album, of the time, it’s a pure banger factory. Listening to this yesteday reignited my love for this album and the nostalgia of learning the songs on bass 16 years ago, really brings it home for how fun this is. I was genuinely open to giving this a 3 or 4 but the re-listen brought it back for me. Especially after the 40 minute sitar love in earlier today.

I was really enjoying this album and then I noticed it - the rhythm guitar strumming is identical in nearly every song. Yes the chords change but that da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da goes through pretty much every song. Without it, the songs are very different (and good) but it seems like a cheat. Can he do anything else with his instrument? Knocked down from a solid 4 stars.

I never really got into the strokes and now it feels a bit too late. This album was incredibly influential to the point where a lot of what came after sounds just like it. If I had heard this album first, perhaps my reaction would be different

Kinda dig it. You can kinda hear Last Night in every song. There's no question who you are listening to. Some of it's cause there is a bit of uniqueness to the singer's voice, but mostly because of vocal distortion and the guitarist being kind of a one trick pony.

In Conclusione: Allora qua c'ho un sacco da dire. Io sono esattamente il target ideale di questo album, questo tipo di musica è stato quello con cui so stato in fissa per anni e praticamente ogni pezzi mi ricorda qualche gruppo o qualche pezzo tra i miei preferiti. In teoria sarebbe una cosa buona, l'album suona bene, è sfizioso, è ben scritto. Che c'ha che non va quindi? Secondo me questo album, così come altri che so venuti dopo di lui sono gli autori di una gentrificazione del punk e della musica veramente sofferente. Questa non è musica sofferente come quella da cui prende a piene mani, è l'adolescente borghese con i jeans strappati pagati 200 euri. Suona tutto sporco ad arte, matto quanto basta, distorto quanto basta, stonato quanto basta, ma poi invece di fondo è pop per la gente che si fa di coca ai festini borghesi e vuole sentirsi ribelle. Secondo me sti strokes so bravi e hanno creato un buon prodotto ma artisticamente me stanno sul cazzo.

Devo dire che non è un capolavoro ma è un album che mi fa divertire e mi ascolto volentieri. Mi piace anche il modo di suonare semplice, sgraziato ma efficace. Sono una ragazzetta hipster.

Solid album

Really cool, unique sound but all around a snooze about half way through

A very tight and tidy wee album. The Strokes know how to keep it simple and just write good songs. I always likes the band but they never made a big impression on me first time around and re-listening to this album now I pretty much still feel same way. I don’t dislike any of it, but I don’t love it. Cool band though.

One of the best albums of all time. Rediscovered NYC Cops on this listen. So good.

Very accessible and listenable.

A great album and an easy listen.

Effortlessly cool, this band played a huge part in my life music wise in my twenties and still do today. As fresh now as it was then even though it wears every influence on its sleeve. An absolute joy to listen to from start to finish - how many tracks are just nailed on killer songs ? Tore up my rule book in 2001 in the same way Nirvana did ten years before. Utterly brilliant ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Another rock album of little substance. I was fond of the singles released from this album at the time but even those now wear thin. This album is boring with a capital Zzzzzzz... 1 Star!

I like this sound. Probably a 4. Let's see about individual songs.... There are 4 of 11 that I really like, as well as sections of others! This pushes it near-or-into 5 territory. I think it's just a 4 though. Would probably be an 8-9/10

'Last Night' is a great little song. It does however appear to be the only song The Strokes have. Everything else sounds exactly like it, like they wrote one good thing and decided to stick with the template as much as they could. They is no variety on this album at all, it's a real disappointment.

I quite like the raw energy album. The it may be because it sounds a bit like The Jam and Lou Reed (although not as stoic).

I was in the mood for this today.

This album is great and I had been wanting to listen to it for a while so I'm glad I finally did. I liked it better on the second listen and it's at least a top 50 album for me. It's just full of good songs and no filler. I don't have too many thoughts on it other than that. It's 35 minutes of good music that I will definitely be coming back to. As far as negatives, there aren't many. I don't like the guitar solo on Last Nite but it doesn't ruin the song for me. Also. the US version is definitely worse. I guess I understand why they replaced it but New York City Cops is better than When It Started. Favorite Songs: Is This It; The Modern Age; Barely Legal; Someday; Alone, Together; Last Nite; Hard To Explain; Trying Your Luck; Take It Or Leave It Decent 9/10

As much as I’m enjoying expanding my musical horizons, it was nice to listen to something familiar with this album.

Blessed and cursed with an enormous amount of hype from the British press, the Strokes prove to be one of the few groups deserving of their glowing reviews. Granted, their high-fashion appeal and faultless influences -- Television, the Stooges, and especially Lou Reed and the Velvets -- have "critics' darlings" written all over them. But like the similarly lauded Elastica and Supergrass before them, the Strokes don't rehash the sounds that inspire them -- they remake them in their own image. On the Modern Age EP, singles like Hard to Explain, and their full-length debut, Is This It, the N.Y.C. group presents a pop-inflected, second-generation take on late-'70s New York punk, complete with raw, world-weary vocals, spiky guitars, and an insistently chugging backbeat. However, their songs also reflected their own early-twenties lust for life; singer/songwriter/guitarist Julian Casablancas and the rest of the band mix swaggering self-assurance with barely concealed insecurity on "The Modern Age" and reveal something akin to earnestness on "Barely Legal" -- a phrase that could apply to the Strokes themselves -- in the song's soaring choruses. The group revamps "Lust for Life" on "New York City Cops" and combines their raw power and infectious melodies on "Hard to Explain," arguably the finest song they've written in their career. Nearly half of Is This It consists of their previously released material, but that's not really a disappointment since those songs are so strong. What makes their debut impressive, however, is that the new material more than holds its own with the tried-and-true songs. "Is This It" sets the joys of being young, jaded, and yearning to a wonderfully bouncy bassline; "Alone Together" and "Trying Your Luck" develop the group's brooding, coming-down side, while "Soma," "Someday," and "Take It or Leave It" capture the Strokes at their most sneeringly exuberant. Able to make the timeworn themes of sex, drugs, and rock & roll and the basic guitars-drum-bass lineup seem new and vital again, the Strokes may or may not be completely arty and calculated, but that doesn't prevent Is This It from being an exciting, compulsively listenable debut. [In light of the World Trade Center disaster, the track "New York City Cops" was pulled from the U.S. release].

A real throwback for me - a solid collection of songs.

Some of the songs sound a bit weak with the passage of time but it's still a modern cultural classic. 4

Not a fan of the strokes, all their songs sound the same and it’s a noise I don’t like. Wouldn’t choose to listen to any of their albums.

Some bangers on there. Loads of energy, Someday, Last Nite, New York City Cops all in my favs - don't think I appreciated the album as much at the time but they were a big part of the naughties indie revival. Love the cover was banned in the US too +1 star just for that.

2001 was mega wasn't it? A whole world of possibilities for a 16/17 year old me who's just discovered that pubs (remember them?) would serve him and some particularly unfussy girls would go out with him. One of the best album covers of all time, one of the coolest bands of all time released this. The album itself is perfect. I wanted to be them but somehow failed to pull off the skinny jean, leather jacket, stoner look. I would pick out highlights; but I adore every song for different reasons. If you pushed me "Someday" is probably my favorite. Fun Fact- At a fundraiser recently for Bernie Sanders The strokes fans had gone past the curfew time and the fans rushed the stage durign the last song "New York City Cops". The Front man, Julian Casablancas, turns around and bumps into huge cop trying to control the situation just as hes singing 'they ain't too smart!' Chaos ensued (plenty of videos on youtube). Anyway This is the best album of the noughties, hand down, and I'll fight anyone who says otherwise! I'd give this 6 if i could. Easiest 5/5 ever.

komplett 70er style.. stark rockig aber mit leichtem punk einschlag vorallem auf den vocals.. coole e-gitarren riffs und solos. geht ein wenig in die richtung der talking heads.. ok richtung beschreibung wär new-wave gewesen haha my best friends girl kannte ich schon, den rest nicht wirklich.. nicht 100pro mein sound aber schon fettes album

One of my all time favourites!

4.6 + This was on heavy rotation on my iPod nano for several years, particularly at the gym. Such a tight backing band without too much extra by way of frills and effects. The bass line in “Is this It” is amazing. Vocals delivered with snearing affect mixed with general malaise. Love this one from start to finish.

Really enjoyed - didn’t listen much when I was younger but this still provides me nostalgia for a time haha

La musique est entraînante, mais je déplore le fait que ça l’air d’être mixé par un projet de cégep. La guitare, le drum et les vocals sont monotones un peu. Overal je lui donne quand même un 3/5, c’est loin du chef d’œuvre

The Stroke’s 2001 magnum opus “Is This It”, was a prime example of being in the right place at the right time. Rock music was ready to undergo a change it hadn’t done so since the early 90s with the grunge era. The New York group quickly rose to prominence and gave way to the indie music revolution. It was a return to the fundamentals and the basics of what made rejecting main stream so cool. The strokes were able to make amazing melodies with fairly simple progressions and that in itself is what lens does band its signature sound. Overall I would give this album a 9.1 out of 10, “Is This It” is an album that I still play regularly on vinyl front to back.

I wanted to hate this album so much when it came out. Rich little prep-school boys trying to make vintage music sounds like such a turnoff. Nope. One listen and I was in love. Perfect album.

alt/punk rock, cool riffs (no solos really), not horrible vocals. The sound is cool, though, and there are a few I know on there.

Bit over hyped

Oh yeah this is a jammy album. Very west coast jam sess. Roll down the highway singing out a convertible. But really heavy undertones, so driving during sun set. The mastering on the vocals are raw and stand out in a really cool contrast to the hip melodys and razor sharp solos. When it started is super bouncy, love that.

Good but not for me

I enjoyed this album quite a bit on my first listen through. I would, based on my first listen through, recommend "Is This It" to anyone who might enjoy something a little more indie. Is the term Alternative? Stand out tracks we're, imo, Barely Legal, Someday and Alone, Together. Looking forward to further listens and further venturing through their discography.

OK. Just OK

This is such an easy listen. One of the main groups that got me really interested in 'Indie' music back in the day - when I found them I was going through my divorce and needed something upbeat and different than the pop crap I was used to consuming. 'Last Night' and especially 'Hard to Explain' were like a gateway drug. 4 stars for helping to pull me out of a pit and keeping me company on my drives back and forth to Phila in the early 00's.
