Reviews (page 3 of 12)
Was not expecting this to be anywhere near as good as it was. Never really enjoyed the late 50s stuff which I find pretty corny, but this is on entirely different level which I think has a lot to do with the band behind him. Someone give that man on bass a medal. This is ultimate cool. Soul infused almost funk composition overlaid with perfectly delivered lyrics. The man's got a voice no doubt about it.
The king will always be the king and he shows it with these songs that many were unaware of. Great.
Discazo. Songs: Suspicious Minds, In the Ghetto, Only The Strong Survive, Don't Cry Daddy, Kentucky Rain
My score is even for the original album (without later added singles like Suspicious Minds etc).
El rey... Punto
inarrivabile
I love elvis
Daria 4.5 se possível, tem músicas icônicas mas outras meio chatinhas
Have I listened to this album before No How familiar am I with this album I know some songs How do I feel about this artist? I know he’s pretty divisive as a person but I can’t help but like his music Pre-Listen Thoughts: I have to release 40 billboards today so hopefully this helps me along with that Favorite track(s): Power of My Love, Suspicious Minds Post-Listen Thoughts: Does anybody else think about Cartman when they hear In the Ghetto? I know this is a later album from him and it doesn’t have a lot of his big hits but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Made me want to dance but I was too busy prepping 40 billboards.
Second half of the album pretty good! King
i don't like elvis as a person but so far this has been really good??
Regardless of your opinion of Elvis, there are parts on here where the guitar work is simply superb. In the Ghetto and Suspicious Minds have always been favorites of mine and elevates this album to a 4 just for those two songs.
Elvis Presley’s From Elvis in Memphis captures a remarkably cohesive, blue-eyed soul and smooth blues aesthetic, marked by standout tracks like the catchy opener "Wearin' That Loved On Look" with its fantastic, choir-backed blues bridge, the poignant storytelling of "Long Black Limousine," and the gritty allure of "Power of My Love." While the album delivers strong individual messages on tracks like the Darwinian "Only the Strong Survive," exceptional vocal control on "Mama Liked the Roses" (frequently paired with these sessions), and undeniable classics like "Suspicious Minds," it ultimately suffers from a structural flaw where the songs sound overly one-dimensional. Because so much of the tracklist—from "Hold You in My Heart" to "Any Day now"—clings to a similar sonic formula, the record begins to blend together, making the overall listening experience feel significantly longer than it actually needs to be.
It’s been a pretty blah week with lots of mediocre albums and few high spots so I clapped when I saw Elvis’s name. Elvis never lets you down, Elvis to the rescue I think, and the album title is like a postcard sent to me by him. From the afterlife. I much prefer Elvis’s Las Vegas songs and here they are in all their glory. After a hiatus from non-soundtrack albums – most of which were not good, Kid Creole and Blue Hawaii being exceptions, he had started to get back to live performances with the NBC special and studio albums. This one includes such classics as Gentle on my Mind and In the Ghetto that he sings with all his Memphis soul, backed by the Memphis Boys and beautiful female harmonies. Truly a joy.
There is probably nothing particularly special about this album, but Elvis' iconic voice is always enchanting
I can no longer think of Elvis without thinking of Rick and Morty time
A classic never dies
Ends with some massive hits, but we both enjoyed the grooves of the album’s first half, which didn’t align with what we thought was Elvis’s style. It’s less in your face and more chill, with simple but tuneful basslines
Second Elvis album in a row. This is The King heading back to what he does best. He was a master of mixing country twang with urban blues. Elvis has been critiqued about his singing of black music, but I find that he honors it. Fun, cheeky lyricism I. “Power of My Love”. Only on the extended version di you get “Suspicious Minds”.
Listened to while doing puzzle games. Can never get enough of Elvis. Such a beautiful voice paired with some amazing love tunes. Didn't know he sung "Gentle on My Mind" (Love Glen Campbell's rendition.), and "In The Ghetto", so those were a happy surprise. Favorite Song -"Momma Liked The Roses"
Some really great, tender stuff. Most Elvis albums feel more like compilations but this feels like a proper album.
Ja top albumpie, Paar goede bangers zoals in the ghetto en supsicious minds
Elvis is good, but only Rock 'n' Roll Elvis is really cool
ya know, i've never really dived into elvis. obv i know a few of his songs here and there, but let's take a better look. ok i had to finish the album at home, so my listening was disjointed. that said, i think elvis knows what's up.
I recognize a bunch of these tracks by title, but I've never listened to this album start-to-finish before. This is a solid Elvis album. I'll be adding this to my list of albums to listen to again.
Oh yeah, the king!
Elvis schmelvis
I enjoyed this, Elvis’ voice sounds great.
Quite melancholy. I preferred it to his earlier work.
I think this was the last stop on the road to Fat Vegas Elvis and therefore 4.5 stars.
This was a shocker to me only due to the date... I did not know Elvis had new music in 1969 that turned out to be classics! I knew he played through the 60's & 70's but thought his music was generally from the 50's. To learn that "In the Ghetto" came out a couple of years after Sgt Pepper blew my mind. Classic album that started a mini Elvis renaissance.
I’ve loved Suspicious Minds for decades - that bumped this album up to a 4.
A really strong album with an outstanding vocal performance from Elvis Presley. The soul-influenced melodies are smooth, warm, and very engaging throughout the record. The overall atmosphere is consistent and enjoyable, with a strong emotional delivery that carries most of the songs. It is an impressive and well-rounded listening experience.
People hate on Elvis for no reason. This is a cool album.
The album has a soul and country feel, with a balance between groove and emotion. Overall, it is a well rounded and easy listen, i could revisit this again.
Pretty fun even if the only thing that gives it a unique-feeling spark is the matching of this musical styling with Elvis' distinct voice, it still works
Awesome
This was my first full Elvis album listen, really enjoyed it. He's got a great voice and the band is super solid.
Perfect for driving on country roads and summer. Really enjoyed listening to this with my windows down. This made me want to explore his other albums
Eka Elvarin levy tässä projektissa. Tää oli ihan kuunneltava levy. Bändin soitto sujuvaa ja soundit kohdillaan.
A lot of fun
Probably the best cover artist of all time!
This is more of a "modern" sounding Elvis studio record. While it still has some of the super echo-y old-school vocals, the production sounds good and the songs are pretty bad-ass. It will always astound me that they left "Suspicious Minds" off this record and released it as a stand-alone single. That's more something that would happen in the UK market.
So beautiful. Don't mess with The King boy. I gotta get more of him on vinyl. Top to bottom, this is beautifully put together, soulful, romantic, the whole thing. Great example of why he’s The King.
El verdadero rey del rock. Dulce, compañero, amante dewl morfi. UN groso. Es rock que no falla, tal vez se puede volver un poco denso para nuestros tiempos
the king
Long black limousine, Gentle on my mind, Suspicious minds, Kentucky rain Good one for Joe
What is it about Elvis that makes him so moreish? It should be pop nonsense being over produced, stolen from black people and written by committee, but i listened through twice then listened to more Elvis and lovee every second. The voice is so good. The songs are consistently excellent and the band play hard and well. He has so much charisma i can see why people though he was an alien
Easily the best Elvis album, so long as you include Suspicious Minds in the tracklist
Big fan of the Memphis treatment (horns, backing vocals) and although both were laid on a little thick at times here it made this my most enjoyable Elvis listen to date and kept my theory that there was never a bad album recorded in the cities of Memphis and Berlin alive.
Solid 4. Um dos, se não o melhor trabalho de Presley, uma boa compilação de faixas country/blue-eyed soul.
I love Elvis. What a voice!
Late stage Elvis. Always good for a listen, but most certainly not in his prime.
7/10
Yeah, Elvis is pretty good I'd say. Was on a bad run of albums but this one was good.
it’s good. some really good numbers and versions. the bonus tracks included on this include “suspicious minds”, but was not on the original. inclusion might have bumped it up to a fiver.
i had only ever heard his most popular songs so this was fun to delve into :)
there’s a reason he’s called the king of rock n roll. necessary listening
No puedo darle mala nota siendo quien es. Es buen álbum
Classic that must hear once minimum
8/10
I like music I like Elvis
yea pretty classic, I guess 3.5/5? so 4?
I liked this record. Didn’t love it, but really liked it. The production is pretty inconsistent. A lot of weird added reverb to his vocal performances. The bass player is absolutely cooking, sometimes a little too much. I’m a big fan of Elvis, and listening to this album, knowing it’s later, less energetic Elvis, has me excited for the records from his prime.
3.5 Good to hear Elvis outside of just the hits, it's revealing and makes a much stronger case for his superstardom. Really enjoyed this album.
Elvis! Solide comme toujours!
Starkaste helhetsverket jag hört från Mr P!
kingen!!
i don't consider myself an elvis fan, but this is a remarkable record. it probably is the one to own. i mean, come on, "suspicious minds" is one of the best rock n roll songs ever recorded
There's a reason he's the King, that voice!
Elvis does Memphis Soul… better than the Vegas era, but still nowhere near as essential as his early-stage rockabilly explosion.
Some great tracks, fantastic vocals ofc. Suffers from late 60s “stereo” mixing (drums only on left channel)
8/10
Loved it to be honest
It's unfortunate my two favorite songs on this albums aren't from the original release, but from the bonus material. Kentucky Rain and Suspicious Minds are my two favorites. There doesn't feel to me like there's anything groundbreaking here, but it's all good music. Very enjoyable. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Elvis showed me a whole different side of himself — top stuff
my liking started off slow on this one but towards the end I realized I liked the album so much so I rewinded some of the songs as I was going through it. it was a unique sound I did not expect from Elvis, which made me like it even more.
Production on this is crisp. This definitely helped me understand Elvis more than his debut album.
I'm not really an Elvis fan, but he does have a nice voice. There is a real good energy captured on this album and I found it entertaining throughout.
Other than the beautiful songs about his parents and uh *checks song title* The Ghetto??? This was basically just 40 minutes of Elvis being a simp ass yearning lover boy… he’s just like me fr.
They called him the king for a reason, and he's pretty damn good.
Pleasantly surprised! Listened while cooking and felt like a suburban in the 70s somewhere in the midwest
ELVIS. The King.
I don’t like early Elvis albums at all. Once you hear Sister Rosetta Tharpe sing the original versions of those songs, Elvis sounds boring. But I really like this later album. Great backing band, great production. The songs aren’t trying too hard to impress anyone and they just do their thing.
Since watching the Elvis vegas music doc I’ve been more interested in Elvis. This album is a good summary why, not expecting much going in it has a ton of interesting things to offer throughout. I liked more than I thought I would and killer bass tone throughout.
This was quite good. I liked the second half of the album much more than the first.
Elvis is wonderful. This album was beautifully sung and that bass was killing it the whole time. I can't say these are my favorite songs by Elvis but they did showcase his voice and range.
Always enjoyed a lot of Elvis’ music, and I have a step-father that was an impersonator at one point, so I’ve heard A LOT of his music. This is definitely a really good album, and one that is more on the soulful, chill side of things. Was a good soundtrack for my morning routine.
Primeiro album bom do elvis que eu ouço
Know Elvis Had not listened to the album Knew a coupe of the songs. I enjoyed this. Great backing band and Elvis's voice sounds great. Pretty much all songs were good.
A slow start, backloaded with bangers. It seems that 'Suspicious Minds' and 'Kentucky Rain' weren't on the original release. If they're included, then it's four stars. I like this era of Elvis a lot. Emotive, gilded, self-destructive. Yeah, four stars.
"Any day Now" hit me the most. Can say it's bad? No. Probably i'm outta of time for this album. Can't deny it's good. "Suspicius mind" it's another hit
Beter dan verwacht!
This was so much fun to listen to, and when you have Suspicious Minds on it. Bonafide classic!
Полюбила музыку Пресли, правда в исполнении Остина Батлера благодаря фильму. Поэтому с удовольствием послушала альбом. Правда немного скучноватый и меланхоличный, но, может, это синоним взрослости? Очень понравился закрывающий трек
I’ve never really gotten into Elvis before, but one thing I’ve learned through this project so far is that I have a soft spot for old country. I know this album is a little more rock n roll, but it definitely has a touch of country to it, which I actually enjoy. His crooning voice really does feel like he’s performing at a Vegas show, but this album worked for me, and I have a further appreciation about what made Elvis so famous.
Admittedly, Elvis and his whole... thing is really not my bag anymore. For every Elvis song there's a black artist that's done it better, and seeing as how most of his best songs are actually covers it pretty much cements him not as a great songwriter or musician, far from it actually. He's a great performer. This album is the perfect example of why that's the case. The producers for the label picked these songs for him, to try and help get back in the mainstream's good graces, and it worked. Fans ate this up. It's easy to see why though, his voice is spectacular here and the arrangements are tender and warm. The songs being performed are all great, and specifically "In The Ghetto" and the not-included-but-should-have-been single "Suspicious Minds" are absolutely fire. The reason I don't rate this album higher is basically, circling back to my first point, I would rather listen to black soul and r&b singers that have done it first and done it better. All that being said, this is easily Elvis's best record and the only one I would consider essential listening.
421/1089 - Very strange production choices. The reverb is really wacky on this. Barley any on the bass and guitar and a ton on the vocals. Super hard panning on the instruments as well. Besides that, the songs themself are mostly pretty good, great playing and a signature voice.
Really enjoyed this more than the last Elvis record I got. Better instrumentation all around combined with his buttery voice.
Enjoyed it. Very polished sound from on the greats.
awesome
Elvis getting back to his country roots.
Music filled with a sense of despair and reminiscing 70s Americana. Probably symbolic of times then and perhaps even now. Somber Elvis is still pretty good to listen to.
I thought for sure I would rate Elvis 3 at most just because of the cultural osmosis, but this was enjoyable and deserves its 4!
not so familiar with "later" elvis, but the sound is refreshingly different, while still being clearly elvis.
So good, I loved that I heard this, every song is great. I think it’s like they ray Charles when I’m not gonna add it to my regular listening, but i know it’s a lot of quality music. 4, almost a 5.
Pretty solid Elvis
His music makes me feel nostalgic
Wspaniały i nieodżałowany
yo he ate this shit up... im becoming an elvis guy for sure
Synes det var dejliigt, sikke en charmør
I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this as much as I did. This guy was a rockstar for reason and this album makes that clear.
It's a great album to see Elvis go back to a country rhythm and blues sound. He's backed by a solid band and backup singers. Overall a great way to get into Elvis' catalog.
I enjoyed this just as much as Elvis’s debut album we listened to earlier. I don’t know as much about Elvis as I probably should, but this feels like the beginning of his so-called “Fat Elvis” period, when he was used and abused in Vegas. At any rate, he and his sound are very different here than they were in the ’50s, though it’s still very good. My only complaint, and maybe there’s an obvious reason Elvis fans know, is how could they not include Suspicious Minds on the original 36-minute LP?
Prefer Roy Orbinson
The '68 comeback TV special had clearly injected some vitality into the Elvis lost movie star and this album gave a contemporary sound for the time with some gospel, blues, ballad and Motown flavours. There are a couple of tracks that became staples of the vegas live years. Proof that he could challenge the heirs to his original throne on occasion. Nonessential but solid.
An album that certainly helps understand the continuous appeal of Presley 4*
Elvis going fulll Memphis. Took them a few songs to get his voice right in the mix. Really like this era.
Dette er type. På vei fra rocken inn i bluesen her. Overraskende god lyd til å være fra 69.
Interesting to read the reviews of this album on here. I also feel that Elvis's voice on this come-back album is often somewhat hidden by cavernous reverb, when the band seems really dry and tight in comparison. There is some real sacharine on here but I appreciate in its own way. Like other reviewers have said, this is the Elvis come back era, on the cusp of the Las Vegas residencies and I'm attracted to the glamour/glitter that comes across in this recording. The fade in and out of 'Suspicious Minds' particularly nods to extended stage versions of the track, takes me there sitting at a caberet table with a cocktail. 'In the ghetto' never been a fave of mine, and some of the more country style tracks not really for me, but enjoyed this album as a whole. I have listened several times over the last few days, and it's true some days it plays better than others, but isn't that the same for everything? My average 'would definitely listen again' 4 stars. Number of tracks: 16 Fave track: 7 Power of My Love Others: Wearin' That Loved On Look. Suspicious Minds. 27/02/26
Elvis is #339 in spotify's top artists. Kanye is #20. 🫣
Loved the experience. What I was hoping for, for an Elvis record.
I had been anticipating this to be one of those where the hits far outweigh the rest. Obviously Suspicious Minds is a banger but I was pleasantly surprised how much more of this I actually enjoyed. Ok, bit of a dip in the middle and a bit too country in places but overall not a bad effort. This Elvis fella may have a future in music you know.
Corny, cheesy, over the top. Yup, all of the above. But it’s Elvis, and he was effin great. End of. TCB
THE KING
listen a bit, it's elvis, it's a classic
Velmi dober. Elvis got some bangers.
Much better, a really good album. Hard to beat a bit of Elvis.
Hey this guy's pretty good.
Pretty, pretty good
My god this surprised me. He has an astonishing voice that shines across a significant variety of song styles. The content is perhaps a bit sappy but it's less overblown and more back to his roots. Some absolutely fantastic bass on this on certain tracks. This can sit pleasantly in the background or you can dance. Very veteran crooner
This is great pretty much all the way through. And talk about burying the lead - In the Ghetto and Suspicious Minds just pop up out of nowhere at tracks 12 and 13.
8.5/10
Probably the best group of Elvis songs I have heard.
surprisingly good. 3.5
A lot of good songs that are enjoyable to listen to. Little to no rock and roll on here. A very bluesy album. I anticipated not liking this, but was pleasantly surprised.
It was fun to listen to. Elvis had a lovely voice and sung well, and was charismatic. Not something I would put on and on again, but a nice change of pace.
Elvis at his best
Dang Elvis is pretty good.
Pretty fantastic. For me I think it's the background singers that bring it home, but the songs are great and the production great. My only ding is Elvis doesn't write. Probably 4.5 for me.
Suspicious Minds slaps. The rest is pretty good! Surprised how good his voice is. Might relisten.
Elvis on kyllä hyvä. 3,5/5.
Have to say that was more enjoyable than I expected it to be. Some if it was a bit over the top, but all in all, not a bad listen.
Not the best Elvis album I've heard.
it's pretty good,I like this album, because it's cheers me up. favorite song is can't help falling in love. this is absolute masterpiece
I am an Elvis Presley opp. I know that 0.0000005% of rock stars are actually good people, but I just do not like Elvis or his music. I thought I would despise this album, but it was honestly not bad at all. My biggest problem for Elvis is his vocals, I dislike his singing style. Long Black Limousine was the album favorite. I surprisingly enjoyed this album, but I still do not like Elvis.
This is why he's The King - gorgeous music, classic songs.
це досить приємно слухати
I’m probably not going to listen to it over and over. But Elvis had a voice of butter and a musical awareness superior to most. That is clear on this album, and it is a gem.
A very solid album from the King
Solid classic from the king
It was pretty great, nothing wildly special but every track carried weight and pure emotion and performance from of course the iconic Elvis Presley.
This somehow feels like a pastiche of Elvis more than Elvis himself. I like the idea that there was demand for him, a demand to go back to a time before political assassinations, perpetual war, and hippies. It’s a little cheesy, and the body percussion he seems to do on some tracks is weird, but I like it!
Banger
Overall Rating - 3.78/5 (7.56/10). There's a reason he's regarded as one of the greatest of all-time, and this is part of that reason.
Elvis albums are typically a mixed bag, but this is a solid one, done after his decision to quit doing movies and on the heels of Elvis in Hawaii. "Suspicious Minds" is easily my favorite of his tunes, "In the Ghetto" and "Don't Cry Daddy" are peak Elvis-camp/drama and "True Love Travels on a Gravel Road" is E at his most Lynchian.
When I was young I had a friend who was raised by his mother, a strange, wounded-seeming woman who was absolutely infatuated with Elvis — framed photos of him from his Vegas years on the walls, etc. That and the Public Enemy line (I actually Googled “was Elvis racist?”) and a visit to Graceland during a road trip many years ago comprise what I know of Elvis, who has always seemed more of a mythological character created by the music biz than a flesh-and-blood musician and human being. Other than a late-career version of “Are You Lonesome Tonight” where he’s wasted and slurs his way through much of the song that landed on a mixtape my friend made for me, I’ve never listened closely to his music, especially not a full album. His husky vocal affectation may be an acquired taste, but there is some definite quality here, especially “Long Black Limousine,” “True Love Travels on a Gravel Road” and the pedal steel boogie of “I’m Movin’ On.” It’s a highly listenable album at the intersection of country, Memphis soul and Vegas revue.
Good mix of hits and material i was unfamiliar with.
He sounds more of a crooner and soul singer here and I love him for it.
Wearin’ That Loved On Look // In The Ghetto // Suspicious Minds // 3.5/5
He's good isn't he
What a singer. I've heard lots of Elvis songs over the years, but I can't remember listening to a full album before. This was a great place to start. A lot less rockabilly than his early smashes, and a lot more schmaltzy, but his singing is so rich and mature. Forget the tracks if you don't fancy them, just enjoy the voice.
The blues sound, the lyrics, the production of the sound are incredibly. And that's without counting the lyrics, the feel of each song, so, so good! Absolutely recommended for anyone.
- Kongen selv, veldig bra🙂↕️ - Variert album, perfekt elvis - elvis er kul
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this. My mad auntie (Elvis superfan) will be pleased
This album surprised me by how much it slapped.
The band on this is incredible.
I was never into Elvis so I have zero perspective here but I have to say this is a surprise. I only know Elvis’s biggest hits and none of them are here. Also the overall style is less rocknroll and more bluesy-country-soul-balladry thing, some songs like Gentle On My Mind are maybe even borderline psych rock. Anyway it’s real nice and Elvis’s voice has such great dynamics and range of expression. Four stars and a pleasant surprise.
I can see the hype for Elvis tbh, his voice is great and there was a lot more songs with storytelling than I was expecting. Great listen
The other day when I had the Marty Robbins album I literally thought “I wonder when I’ll get an Elvis album.” They’re not particularly similar, a couple superficial similarities I guess, but then lo and behold literally the next day, finally, the King entered the building. Elvis is a garbage dude but I do like his music! Sue me! This had great energy and the songs are classic and he’s in the fucking groove here for sure. A solid concert.
Like it's Elvis, people. Even though maybe the album's not rhe best, but i liked some songs
This isn't my favorite Elvis era, but it's still pretty great. The mix of country and Stax-style soul is wonderful.
3.8/5 This was much better than I expected. Once again, my biases are proved to be unjustified.
I mean it’s so good. Especially, In the Ghetto and Suspicious Minds.
I can see why this guy was so popular (though I know this isn’t the style that got him famous) Really like the soul sound present throughout the album, great mix of emotional slow tempo pieces with some more high energy pieces. I’m always a sucker for horns in my music I thought I’m Movin’ On, in the ghetto, and power of my love were my standouts, though suspicious minds is obviously the big one from this album Would probably be a 9/10 if we weren’t rating out of 5
I honestly had no idea Suspicious Minds was made in the late 60’s. Figured that it was made in the 50’s, but I guess I assume all of Elvis’ hits were made in the 50’s. No skips, consistent quality with a few belters. Not a whole lot to say about Elvis that many people much smarter than me haven’t already said. However, I've always has something against Elvis. I think it has something to do with my dislike for Bob Dylan. I just kind of lump them together for some reason? Maybe because they both have strange vocals about them that make me generally dislike their music. That said, this is really solid. I think the soul influences are a really great touch, it adds a ton of depths to the vocals, especially in the early songs. I don't know that I love this, but I can't even point to something actually negative about the album. 4/5
this album is exhibit #1 for people accusing elvis of just taking gospel songs and replacing “jesus” with “baby.” #churchorgan
This one exceeded my expectations. The Elvis Presley album I had before - which was his debut - was a miss, this one on the other hand has a better tone and atmosphere; having this amazing gothic vibe present. This one focuses more on country rather than rock, which his earlier releases focus on more I assume. Highlight Song/s: "Only the Strong Survive" and "Long Black Limousine"
4/5
Overall great album
Tbh kind of a banger. I don’t know if I would go out of my way to listen to Elvis but the exposure to a classic artist was a good experience. A lot of the songs on this album sounded too similar
Love Elvis!!! I watched the biopic when it came out however many years ago, but it lost me because I felt like they didn’t do enough of highlighting his music cause it’s so good! I love the lyrics and his voice is obviously amazing. My favorites were Only the Strong Survive, Gentle on My Mind, Any Day Now, and Suspicious Minds.
This is the good Elvis. In the Ghetto was the original album I recognised, but I let the deluxe version run on until Suspicious Minds finished as that's objectively the best Elvis song.
I liked suspicious minds the most. Some other love songs were fine too. I don’t like him like the Beatles, if to consider that time period, but it was fine.
7/10 It's good - at times great - but some of the songs are just a bit weak and bland, so much so that not even the King can save them. But still, very enjoyablem
who knew elvis could be good
I have long not enjoyed an album that I didn’t know before as much as I enjoyed this one. Never was a big Elvis fan, and this won’t change much overall, but man, From Elvis in Memphis is 90% nothing short of stunning. The performances and the arrangements are absolutely ace. All of the musicians are brilliant; Elvis’ singing is super expressive; the selection of songs makes for an impeccable flow. I fully understand why this is seen as a classic. It has stood the test of time - and it has a great cover. Where the country influences take over too much (“I’ll Hold You in My Heart,” “It Keeps Right On A-Hurtin’”), those are the songs which I’m not particularly crazy about. But overall, this was an incredible listen (or rather, three listens). The melody in “Long Black Limousine” - ah, it just hits the right spots. I can’t stop listening to it for now.
Maybe his best
7/10
Elvis was at his PEAK here.
oh yay black leather elvis!! so much fun, esp. tracks 1,2,4,6,8,11-13 & 15 ; ) I LOVE groovy elvis and man does this record smell like Johnny Cash I hear him loud and clear as an influence 4.5 here
So much more depth in his voice than his first recordings. Reverb is dope af. Still jingle jangling
There's a reason Elvis is the King. I wasn't really in an Elvis kind of mood today when I started this album, so I wanted to dislike it. But it just hooks you and by the time you're hitting "Suspicious Minds" you're like, YES MY LIEGE!
3.5
Elvis, this voice its unbelievable. What a great group of songs, there's a little bit of everything in there. I thought this was going to be live from the album art. The band and backup singers sounds great. Elvis really shines through, this is the first full Elvis album I've ever listened to and I have to say, I see why everyone went nuts for him. Suspicious minds is amazing.
Is Elvis really good? I haven't really spent that much time listening to his music, but maybe that's my loss.
shocked about how much i liked this... honestly never understood the insane hype around him (never even seen the movies) but im starting to understand... LOVED "power of my love" "gentle on my mind" "after loving you" "true love travels on a gravel road" "kentucky rain"
This is the first time I hear an entire Elvis album. It’s gritty, emotional and raw. Suspicious Minds is always a favorite.
Honestly better than expected. Some bangers and nothing I didn't like. Kentucky Rain hits hard.
for my first introduction to a full elvis album this is a great way to start it! i get the hype because there isn’t a song i wasn’t impressed with on this album and i will definitely be listening again favourite track : power of my love
Thanks, Elvis.
This sounds like Elvis
Elvis is classic, and this album is solid throughout.
Would buy
The king sure could sing. 60s soul does it for me once again. Good album. 7/10
I wish they didn't make me like this nasty bastard. Suspicious minds rocks, and if you're gonna wrongly accuse someone of cheating you might as well say they're wearin that loved on look
Grym. 4!
Favorites: Long Black Limousine, Wearin that Loved on Look Loved the harmonization he had w his backup singers.
I hadn't listened to a lot of later Elvis stuff -- I enjoyed this. I did feel sad knowing what was going on in his personal life at this time
haven't heard much Elvis except for his mainstream hits which are many but this opened me up to a different Elvis sound. He apparently actually was able to write and perform songs that the general public may not appreciate. Many of the songs on this album really accentuated his iconic voice and his ability to create some different melodies from what we're used to
En kyllä ollut kuullut melkein mitään noista biiseistä mut olihan se nyt hyvää kuultavaa!
Classic Elvis
Great voice and I really enjoyed the strings and horns that were incorporated.
Täitsa meeldiv ja ajatu kõla. Ilus mix ja klassikaline songwriting ka, kuulaks pikalt veel edasi. Täitsa kujutan ette, kuidas ja miks tervel generatsioonil tekkis Elvise-hullus. 4/5
Classic!
He really is the king
First album from the King himself! Well sadly this is a live album, nothing against them but maybe not on this list. Despite that, this is recorded super well and mixed expertly up to the point where it is hard to think this is a live album. Legendary moments with "In the Ghetto" and "Suspicious Minds", so probably easy 4 stars.
Solid, bangers all over the place. Bluesier than the earlier stuff.
I actually really liked this one. I’ve got my own feelings about Elvis, but I must say the album is good.
really was rocking with this
Not a fan at all but didn't want to skip and found it pretty pleasant to listen, the voice is beautiful and the mix is good.
This album was fun to listen to, it’s not my usual taste and I probably won’t be listening to it again as it’s really not my style but it wasn’t the worst thing in the world
I always kinda liked Elvis the few times I have heard something from him. This is the first time I listen to one of his albums on purpose and I like it even more now. It's catchy and calming at the same time, and of course his voice is legendary. I'll definitely listen more to Elvis in the future. 4/5.
Classic Elvis tunes. You heard them all. It's a return of the older Elvis to younger form.
This was very good. The backing band was excellent and that really made the whole album a great listen.
He's called the king for a reason.
This is the first time I "got" Elvis. 3.5.
Personal enjoyment: 4/5 Relevance to this list: 4/5
A heartfelt story in every song. No one does it like Elvis
So much emotion in his voice. Some great classics. Loving the backing vocals.
I was astonished have have actually enjoyed this album!
I said this in an earlier note: Elvis is underrated. In an era of Vegas residencies and The Eras Tour and my nine-year-old daughter calling everything “iconic” … Elvis paved the way for so many things that were silly at the time but now undeniably cool. And all that starts with the music.
Classic Elvis.
Great, but a bit same-y after half the album
Was pretty decent and then got to in the Ghetto and suspicious Minds - classics
This album is awesome. Great mix of country, rock and blues.
8/10… Blue eyed Soul / 60s
Elvis is pretty good - thank you very much.
Album 938 of 1089 Elvis Presley - From Elvis In Memphis (1969) Rating : 4.5 / 5 Today’s album was From Elvis in Memphis by Elvis Presley - and listening to it reminded me once again why Elvis is such a fascinating figure in music. It’s strange to say about someone so universally known, but I’ve always found him to be something of an enigma. For all his fame and groundbreaking influence, I’ve never felt he reached his full artistic potential. Somewhere between the business decisions, the movie contracts, and the uneven song choices, the true force of his talent often got buried under the weight of his own legend. This album, though, feels like one of those rare times when the stars aligned. Recorded after his 1968 comeback, Elvis sounds reinvigorated - confident, soulful, and fully in command. Side one started a little uneven for me, but once side two began, it really came alive. The energy shifts into something rawer and more heartfelt. The bass on “Gentle on My Mind” stands out (thank you, Tommy Cogbill or Mike Leech), and the presence of songs like “In the Ghetto” and “Suspicious Minds” elevates the entire record. These tracks show the emotional depth that Elvis was capable of when given the right material and space to deliver it. It’s a bittersweet listen in some ways - hearing what could’ve been a consistent direction for him if he’d had better guidance or more freedom. But at the same time, it’s proof that even within those limits, his voice and presence were unstoppable. From Elvis in Memphis isn’t just a return to form - it’s a glimpse into what might have been, and that’s part of what makes it so powerful.
Really nice album, there are a couple of songs that are popular, and the rest of just nice to have in the background. Overall, this was a good experience.
Interesting to hear some "later" Elvis that I was not familiar with. The music was a bit more gritty. My son said it reminded him of Johnny Cash.
Pretty nice live recording.
Shocked at how enjoyable of a listen this was start to finish. Smooth and soothing with most songs on the short side to keep things flowing well.
Maybe Elvis' best album. This is why he's the King.
Better than I thought
Not an album or artist I have a lot of knowledge in, however this is an undeniably good album. The variety of musical genres, lyrical work and Elvis Presley being just a generally amazing musician. 9.5/10
Gets an extra star for In the Ghetto
I've had some earlier elvis records and they didnt really do all that much for me but this one is not the same. He really has honed himself into a very very great performer. Im still going to be weirded out by the fact he doesnt write shit but he can show what others have written off really well. When I was a kid I had a compilation cd of him and in the ghetto was one of my favorite songs when I was small. And I loved it all the same here. Maybe its nostalgia but whatever the reason its still good. And thats how I feel about this one. Its just good. Not the best thing ive ever heard but the progression of this man is very solid.
Hell yeah
Heck yeah let's go, Elvis. I've never listened to an Elvis album. Why would I? Elvis is more of a caricature than an artist in my mind. There's passion and good messaging in this. In the Ghetto? Good on you Elvis. I don't know much about your personal life but I respect this more than I expected to. A pleasant surprise.
Favorite tracks: Wearin' That Loved On Look, Power of My Love, Any Day Now I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would! To no one's surprise I much preferred good more upbeat tracks to his crooning, but I can see the appeal to both. I was pleasantly surprised by the social themes in some of the songs.
Enjoyable Elvis.
4.4/sheesh i've never properly listened to elvis but okay, i get it. i even ended up saving a song. i hardly do that with this project! these songs are grand and he lifts you up with his voice. i'm impressed, guess i need to listen to more elvis Would I listen again? Yes Deserves to be on this list? Yes but people will argue for other Elvis albums
Having grown up watching Elvis movies and hearing his movie soundtrack records, this is a side of Elvis I had yet to encounter - a beautiful fusion of country and soul
(First record picked that I did not hear beforehand) Later era Elvis is its own appeal from the traditional hey-day 50s period of Elvis. More soulful, country roots touched on versus the rockability rock and roll he was best known for. This would be amazing if he didn't do a bunch of movies and did the typical 1950s men thing of being in the Korean War (he didn't go in combat naturally). This album is in 1969, the US became a much different place. Should have done some acid Elvis because that would've made you even cooler. The record itself is alright, good morning music but really the best part of the album is the second half where the best known songs are. Elvis still is a singles guy more than an album guy, but for historical reasons this one is still up there for him. Shouldn't have done free PR for Nixon though, yuck.
Yeah fairplay he is good. Also do enjoy recordings in the time that no one had properly grasped what to do with stereo. 4.0/5.0 Best Song: In The Ghetto
He’s good isn’t he, he’s got a lot of massive songs. Don’t feel like this is the best collection of his songs. But it’s not half bad
Rock and roll brother
Surprisingly good. Elvis has a voice that's really nice to listen to and he has a few really good songs throughout. That being said, take a shot every time he says the words "Love" or "Girl" if you want a free ride to a hospital. It makes In the Ghetto and Don't Cry Daddy stand out more than they have any right to, and the album would be way better if it focused on songs like that rather than the usual love songs that take up most of its runtime. Even those love songs are pretty well-performed. Key word is performed, he didn't write the majority of the songs. I don't hold it against him, most country artists were doing that in the 60s. Bonus fun fact: Elvis has a version of In the Ghetto that he did at a sound check where he replaces "As the snow flies" with "As the shit flies" and proceeds to laugh about it for a minute or two. Good to know me and Elvis have one thing in common, a twelve-year-old's sense of humor. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bq0Cwd41c1w
Isn’t he lovely
Återigen ett sjukt konstigt val av album. Och på skivan av låtar. Men Elvis är Elvis... Fyra
Now that’s some Elvis I can get behind. Some real classics here, I enjoyed listening to this and he sounds great.
Excellent
The first time I’ve listened to an Elvis album as a whole, obviously a fan of his hits though. A lot of the reviews are stating that ‘Suspicious Minds’ makes this album, however it wasn’t included on the original track listing, however later added. I have listened to the original and also the bonus tracks and do agree that SM is a great addition.
He is the King. 4/5
Honestly I enjoyed this album, felt very smooth
Really good, as expected. Just really enjoyed listening to this. Can't say its a masterpiece by any means, just another album by Presley. However it also cannot be knocked.
A great album full with with emotion, great unique melodies and executed perfectly. Very much enjoyed
Gospell-y Elvis is pretty solid. There are some great tracks here (“Long Black Limousine” “Suspicious Minds”), but also some real dreck (“Don’t Cry Daddy”).
Second Elvis album. Kind of like the previous album (Elvis is Back). Favorite songs: In the Ghetto, Suspicious Minds, Don’t Cry Daddy
I like how loud the bass is and the stereo sound. I didn't realize In The Ghetto was an Elvis song and not just something made up for South Park 😂
You know what, this was a lot better than I expected. All I really knew of Elvis is that my late gen-x band director loved him and he built his career on imitating black artists while playing to white audiences. I figured this was gonna be pretty lame but honestly it’s really good. Pretty decent range and quite a few that I saved to my playlist. Favorites were Long Black Limousine, Power of my Love, True Love Travels on a Gravel Road, and Kentucky Rain. 7/10, 4 stars.
Good ole rhythm and blues, Elvis fan since ‘08 - Solid album, still have other faves by him but overall good variety (rip)
classic! cool, wish they still wrote songs like this
Hot dog! To my great shame this is the first time I've listened to an entire Elvis album, front to back, and I've been missing out. My zealot parents must have been afraid of the devil in this man's hips, or how his curled lip made them both feel so alive on the inside they thought it must be evil. I wasn't aware he blended gospel, blues, rockabilly, and only the most exciting parts of country into what must have been insanely progressive music for conservative times. I began this album a simple white boy with no sense of rhythm and ended it a simple white boy in a white t shirt with the sleeves rolled up and tucked into my dark blue jeans, opinions on which pomade was the best and what my baby does while I'm away. I loved that I could see the early start of the music I love today, and I get why people fainted at the sight of him
The King's music definitely sounds more of its era than a lot of the other transcendent artists to follow him. That's not necessarily a bad thing, it may even be a good thing depending on your particular sensibilities, but it definitely led me to pigeonhole the dude a bit. I don't dislike his tunes, but I'm not always in the mood for pure time capsule music. This album has me thinking differently about him, though. I knew Suspicious Minds. That one's a banger, and it's not the only one on this record. I kind of liked the whole damn thing, actually. I think it has a lot to do with the band. They fucking rip. Some beautiful, soulful stuff that complements the King's cartoonish crooning. Actually, is it THAT cartoonish, or are we just accustomed to the billion impersonators and parodies that have come after him? Who the hell knows, man. I love this album, though.
🗯 The King quits Hollywood crud and reminds everyone why he mattered in the first place. After years of increasingly corny films and throwaway soundtracks, Elvis returned to the studio in Memphis and cut the best album of his career. From Elvis in Memphis is a resurrection — gritty, soulful, and charged with the energy of a man who still had something to prove. He’s quite extraordinary in this, easily a me of the most soulful white boys ever! The production leans into southern soul and country, with the crack session players of the American Sound Studio bringing fire to every track. Suspicious Minds (non-album single) and In the Ghetto were the big hits, but cuts like Only the Strong Survive and Long Black Limousine hit just as hard. Loved the build of the opener Wearin’ That Loved On Look too. It’s Elvis at his most human — bruised, hungry, and absolutely alive again. Verdict: Essential (his greatest studio album, no contest) For fans of: Otis Redding, Dusty Springfield, soul-country crossroads
Some classic elvis, to the point where I started singing aloud as I walked down the street. Enjoyable
You can’t go wrong with suspicious minds. Studio albums are far superior to live.
went in skeptical, came out pleasantly surprised.
I like it more than I thought. There’s a lot of emotion in elvis’s croons. More country than rock & roll (like Johnny cash country) Any day now Suspicious minds
15.21, varvas, qobuz etäpäivä, eka levy. elvis vähän niinku meil töissä HAHA ei oikeen mitään selkeetä mielipidettä elviksestä ennen levyä -- kuuntelu aika letkiää. hyvää taustalla. easy listening
love the instruments and how they blend. 3.8/5
Love is painful, finite, but so worth it
“In the ghettooo” 🕺 4/5 Highlights: I’ll Hold You In My Heart (Till I Can Hold You In My Arms) Power of My Love In the Ghetto Suspicious Minds Kentucky Rain
Tillbaka på mammas gata. Memphis-soundet passar Elvis som hand i handske. Själv är jag också väldigt svag för country med soul. Det största minuset med albumet är att Suspicious minds och Kentucky rain inte fick plats. Men vilken avslutning: Any day now följt av In the ghetto!
Elvis good
Really can't go wrong with Elvis. Only thing keeping it from a 5 star is that there wasn't a big Standout Track from the album, but I did really enjoy every single song here. Will absolutely continue to listen to it.
Didn’t even sound live. 8/10
This is a hidden gem. So many new songs that i love! 9/10
Crazy good production on this album. Much better album than his debut.
It was good and I knew more songs on it than I thought.
Good listen
Always a pleasure listening to Elvis
