Didn’t know Elvis had game
Such a good album to listen to. Great voice, great music. One of those old albums when you get why they're a big deal at that time.
For every Beatles that take drugs and become cool and creative and psychedelic, there’s an Elvis that destroys his young body with substances. Sad to see. Pretty good Elvis. Suspicious minds is definitely his best song and many others hit. Fuck if we 4
I found this to be the most moving and emotional album on my list so far. Really powerful stuff and I prefer this style of Elvis compared to the more rock 'n' roll Elvis!
Whew! I was kinda worried that Elvis wouldn't be on here. But I don't actually know any of these songs except 'Suspicious Minds' (which I like very much, it was my ringtone in college for a while). I was worried from the album title that this would be a live album, but it is not. I'm not sure why I'm so into (the idea of) Elvis; it was partly because of the recent weird Tom Hanks movie which I thought about for weeks afterward, but also I think I just like the songs. Maybe Elvis reminds me of Christmas. Maybe I like that I can understand the lyrics without looking them up. I dunno! But I enjoy it, even though I'd probably only listen to a few of the singles on the reg. >New logic question for my students just dropped: if Only the Strong Survive and Only the Good Die Young, does it follow that Only the Good are Weak? More interestingly, is there a quantifier you could use instead of "only" that would mean that? Is Kentucky rain cold? Highlights: "the floor needs a touch of the mop" (how poetic), 'It Keeps Right On A-Hurtin', 'In the Ghetto' (I thought this was a Nick Cave song!), 'Suspicious Minds' (still a top track imo) Lowlights: 'I'm Movin' On'
Some great tunes on this and not all the basic stuff we all know.
Thoroughly enjoyed this! Production is so warm and his voice so rich. Feels like sitting around a nice fire under a blanket on a winters day
it's just fuckin elvis isn't it
I do like Elvis, but hadn’t really listen to this live album and I was very satisfied!
Nice album from Elvis
I owe you an apology Elvis, wasn’t familiar with your game. Suspicious Minds is so good. Really liked the whole album minus In the Ghetto. Didn’t know he had the country crooner element late in his career
Nice
Funky and soulful. A bit sappy here and there, too.
Good album with good songs, many of which I enjoyed
Heyrðu, kom á óvart. Fílaði þetta sánd á plötunni.
Yes! Some Elvis finally! Starts with great energy and vocals from the king. Love the instrumentation and vocals. Fire vocals on track 2 aswell. No one does quit like Elvis. 3 and than 4 are great ballads. 4 is a very dramatic and dark, and lovely. Great track. 5, 6 showcases Elvis as the great country interpreter he is, often outshine by he's rocknroll stardom. A bluesy number to kick on the second half. Nice. 8 is gorgeous, my favorite so far. A perfect rendition to a beautiful song. 9 another good vocal performance. Seems like a pattern I'm spotting, I guess... Nice choir on track 10. This great album finishes with to super strong classics. Any day now and In the Ghetto. Amazing. The high vocals in the bridge of any day now gives me chills every time. The closer is perfect as well. What an album, man. Just stunning. 4.5
This was better than I was expecting. The songs were all new to me but good until In The a Ghetto and Suspicious Minds which are among Elvis’s best. A good album - a solid 4 stars.
Yeah really good! Felt like a gateway drug for Elvis. I’ve always avoided his music, feels like a corny version of his mostly Black contemporaries. 3.7/5
Good and fast album
Hot take: this Elvis character was a pretty cool cat. Also sort of a ham-poseur, with an excessively performative bent and a rather egregious (okay embarrassing) need for acceptance in his pursuit of hits – which points several of these songs toward full-on schmaltz territory (including "Gentle on My Mind" and "In the Ghetto"). But there are a few classics ("Suspicous Minds," "True Love Travels a Gravel Road," "Kentucky Rain") and quite a few underappreciated cuts ("Wearin' That Loved-On Look," "I'm Movin' On"). Basically everything is overdone – no stone or studio trick went unturned in this hunt for relevance. To be clear, he would do a lot worse (and soon) and his history has to be viewed in the light of the fact that he seemed to bring out the worst in American public tastes. Not sure how ironic hipsters had to be in 1969 to dig this, but one would guess more than a little.
Good
Late Elvis os stoll good, but this album felt like some fillers and dragged a little bit. Still I appreciate the voice and the instrumental of the songs, it was another pleasant morning with Elvis' voice being the soundtrack of our morning. As being the first Elvis allbum on the list thatbI review. I give it a 4
4 from me vibes Elvis
It's 3 star at least for 2 songs, gotta give it a 4
Québecois's review : Le meilleur du mix entre le blues, country et rock and roll. C'est pas pour rien que c'est une si grande icône de la musique. Translation : Best mix of Blues, Country and Rock and Roll. Ain't supprising that he is such an icon of music.
Didn't hit hard today but I've heard it before and it was really great.
Elvis actually wrote ‘in the ghetto’ about touring with Houmous & Chutney. He was far more rude than people ever remember. 4.3 13/16 Suspicious Minds
I didn’t like his earlier work, but this was easy listening. Pure pop, and horny in parts! Those hips don’t lie!
Highly enjoyable. Yes the music has dated somewhat but Elvis’ voice is a joy to listen to. Low 4!
Generally I wouldn't describe myself as an Elvis fan. I find the costumes a bit silly, the lore and fandom to be a little over the top and subscribe to the notion that most of his success was off of the back of underpaid and underappreciated African American musicians and songwriters. That being said this album wasn't half bad! Much more layers to the music than I expected with grand crescendos and arrangements. Still probably not something I will seek out but pretty chill background music after a long day at work.
I saw Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds on their recent tour and they played a staggering version of Tupelo describing Elvis' birth into a Biblical storm in Tupelo, Mississippi. Prior to the performance, Nick Cave spoke about how much Elvis inspired him. I kind of found this surprising because I didn't see a lot of parallels between their music, but I honestly wasn't familiar enough with Elvis to really make an informed opinion. Listening to From Elvis In Memphis now, I actually do see some similarities in their singing styles and some of the gospel aspects of the tracks although Nick has definitely twisted this sound into a much more menacing sound. I dug into it a bit further and according to the Red Hand Files this was Nick's favourite era of Elvis' music, and he even mentions a few tracks off this albums as his favourites, so it's starting to make a lot of sense. Anyways, while I really enjoy digging into my favourite bands influences, I also enjoyed listening to From Elvis in Memphis a lot more than I was expecting. Not that I was expecting to dislike it, but I was expecting a much more dated rock-and-roll sound and for some reason I have an impression that Elvis is a bit corny and gimmicky. However, the production on this album is actually pretty amazing and it felt surprisingly timeless. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this album.
I do like this version of Elvis - Suspicious Minds is for sure one of my favorite of his songs. And this version slaps pretty hard. Others on here like Kentucky Rain really just hit right for me.
This album grew on me quite a bit. Listened to the 16 track version on Spotify. There are some tracks that don't do much, but the ones that do are quite impactful. Couldn't help but think that it was the band behind Elvis that truly shines on this album. Songs like "Any Day Now" really shine. Sound quality is also really excellent.
4.8
Listened to most of this and then changed device and spotify lost my progress. Rather than guessing where I was, happily listened to the whole thing again. Pleasantly surprised by this one.
Definitely feels more like a going through the motions album from an Elvis who by this time was getting into the later stages of his career. Not a lot of stand out tracks but still a really nice listen if you are a fan. Gets better the deeper you get into the track list, peaking around 3 quarters in with In The Ghetto back to back into Suspicious Minds The amount of 1 ratings on this one is a bit egregious
Significant as the first thing Elvis was able to record that wasn’t some tacked on corny movie soundtrack in like 10 years. That’s what happens when you let some Dutch (evil) carnie manage your career.
Well, well, welllllll its Rick and Morty tiiiiimmmee This album is quite beautiful with some amazing and varied tracks. I enjoyed the thematic irony this album brought to the table from track to track, some really good writing here. Folk-country Elvis as opposed to Rock and Roll Elvis which im a lot more familiar with. His rock stuff is extremely fun and danceable, this has its fun moments, while maintaining its emotional depth, this surprised me a lot. There's a lot of bangers on this album but I really enjoy the high energy love songs, like Any day now, with its THICK bass line. Suspicious minds is a good track but I definitely feel as thought it has unrealised potential, the chorus is begging to do more. The last couple tracks are a little bit of a bore. The strings are pretty standard as are the vocals and song structure. Reveals its front loaded hand 8/10
No skips, consistent quality with a few belters. Not a whole lot to say about Elvis that many people much smarter and more eloquent than me have already said. The dilemma for me here is whether to review this with the original track listing or the one with Suspicious Minds on it. If it were the former, I'd give this a strong 3. However, as the latter includes probably my third most sung song at karaoke, I'll be reviewing that version instead. Highlights: I'll Hold You in My Heart (Till I Can Hold You in My Arms), Long Black Limousine, In the Ghetto, Suspicious Minds
The album title says it all. It is very Elvis, and it is very Memphis. Overall I enjoyed the album, not really having listened to much Elvis Presley aside from a few of his hits.
well this was nice. some good ol fashioned crooning. not too much to say about it but i did quite like it!
yeah, it's elvis, but he's gettin old. i'm movin' on, he says. it keeps right on a-hurtin' (my back). any day now (i'll kick the bucket on the bucket). he's phoning a lot of this in and just sounds like he's enjoying his vegas residency and musical tenure. with that said, this album does contain suspicious minds, which i feel is the best song he ever recorded behind can't help falling in love. from the opening guitar arpeggios to the weird fade-out-and-back-in at the end, this is an amazing track. it pulls the rest of the album out of the 3-star quagmire and into 4-star territory. they don't make 'em like they used to! favorites: long black limousine, true love travels on a gravel road, in the ghetto, suspicious minds, kentucky rain
Voor luisteren: omg Elvis, nooit een heel album van 'm geluisterd. Is dit het album waar Suspicious Minds op staat? Of is dit live? Vreemd hyped om hiernaar te luisteren. Tijdens luisteren: mmmm, late Elvis. Funky country soul. In The Ghetto is goed. Idyllisch. Het perfecte vakantienummer. Last thoughts: ja fuck it, dit is top.
Teilweise dachte ich das ist ein Fünf-Sterne-Album, die Mitte ist super gut
Some catchy jams. Musically In the Ghetto is good but god damned those lyrics are bad.
I have to admit I was never an Elvis guy... but then I listened to his music and suddenly found myself realizing how much a talent he truly was. I know the image is a gimmick that blown up and now it's just a mockery... but Elvis was truly a once in a generation talent that could belt out some gorgeous lyrics. This album is fantastic, it stands out for the time, and it surely sits on this listen for a reason and ultimately will be remembered for the duration of mind kind in my own opinion.
This is much more Country/Soul/R&B than it is Rock. Elvis can certainly pull this off, though. There is too much country filler here for a 5. Elvis makes the average sound great though. Still, I was getting bored until In The Ghetto and Suspicious Minds. Those 2 songs are incredible.
Has the "seasoned performer" Elvis with a legit Memphis style blues band - some real bangers on this one. Suspicious Minds is a killer.
Gran disco, gran voz. Me guardo en favoritos:«Only the Strong Survive», «Power of My Love», «Gentle on My Mind», «In the Ghetto» y «Suspicious Minds».
I’m a sucker for the king
Varied, classic
Very surprised by how much I like this one.
Incredible voice with swagger, swing and soul
Discazo, de mis favoritos de Elvis. Se notan las influencias de distintos géneros.
- Surprisingly good for Elvis - Kinda like it - Almost as if Elvis wasnt drunk as fuck while recording ts
we cannot rate albums on this site with suspicious minds!
Cult classic. Suspicious Minds is this album.
Solid Elvis Album.
Not my favourite Elvis period but this album did give us In The Ghetto, Suspicious Minds, and Don't Cry Daddy, which are classics.
Starts slow, but side 2 finishes strong, and I listened to the bonus tracks which also add.
Better than I expected.
I'm not sure why I don't really think that highly of Elvis. I think it has something to do with my dislike for Bob Dylan. I just kind of lump them together for some reason? Maybe because they both have vocal oddities about them that make me generally dislike their music. That said, this is really solid. I think the soul influence is a really great touch; it adds a ton of depths to the vocals, especially in the early tracks. I don't know that I love this, but I can't even point to something actually negative about the album. Favorite Song(s): I'll Hold You in My Heart, Suspicious Mind
I really like his voice and the backing singers. I enjoyed the music a lot but by the end of the album I had had enough. Very nice to have on in the background while I was working though. Fav song: Suspicious Minds Least fav: Don't Cry Daddy
Honestly think I like this vibe a bit more than the jailhouse rock kind of stuff. Some bangers in there and also a very good album cover in my opinion. Not a big fan of in the ghetto at all though. Don’t know why it’s so popular. Specific rating - 4.3 Fav song - suspicious minds Least fav- in the ghetto
There are a couple songs that are so Elvis-y it feels like he's impersonating himself. Favourite: Long Black Limousine (or Only the Strong Survive) Least: Don't Cry Daddy
Cant go wrong with Elvis
Apparently Tommy Cogbill was an influence of Jaco Pastorius'. I can certainly believe that, the bass on this album is incredible. Reggie Young on guitar is also showing absolute class. On to Elvis. I never got the hype until I saw the video of him singing at the end of the movie in 2022. What a performer.
Suspicious Minds was my favourite, but it was a good album!
oddly enough I think I prefer later Elvis when he’s real zonked out on pills, but the blend of country and soul with his voice here is so smooth.
nice, good rock and roll
The King 4/5
I don't know why but I picture these songs being the introduction for a post apocalyptic movie and I am here for it. not bad
In the Ghetto is my favorite on this album.
This album reminded me of my grandma (RIP)
Cover: 5 Great album. Not all are great but some great songs I've never heard before. Highlights: Wearing the Loved On Look, Power of My Love, and Suspicious Minds. Also, Only three Strong Survive and In the Ghetto.
Long live The King!
So solid. Generational talent. Kentucky rain got me good.
Really enjoyed it
In the Ghetto & Suspicious Minds: 5 stars Overall: 3 stars Okay, let's make it 4
4.2
Alright, but can be bland, repetitive and boring sometimes. 7/10
Really enjoyed: In The Ghetto, Suspicious Minds, Mama Liked the Roses
I like this Album. Don't love it. But I get why it matters. 4*
Classic Elvis 4/5
great shit
Elvis after the soundtracks before the end is my favorite Elvis. He goes back to his roots on this one and showcases who he really is as an artist and person. It didn’t quite make his the modern rock dude he wanted, but it was a hell of a comeback. The openers and Suspicious Minds may be the best Elvis recordings of all time.
A good go-to for Elvis, displaying a great range, culminating with In the Ghetto and Suspicious Minds.
It’s Elvis! I know maybe half the songs, good album overall.
I know I was a sceptic here - but then my absolute favourite Elvis song popped off, gotta add a star for this
5 stars for song after song of depressing lyrics, daddy was crying, children were crying, cold kentucky rain and permanent heart break but jaysus it finished strong ..won't be listening to the entire album again but some absolute belters
This album SLAMS. The production is fantastic, Elvis booms out of the center surrounded by a crisp, snappy, powerhouse of a band. The first few tracks are the best, energetic out of the gate, Elvis seducing you with that mountain echo of a voice. But the remainder are no slouch, as he shows off his whole vocal range. Really fun album, man, listen to it again!
Theres a couple of BANGERS in this album but the rest are pretty average. Overall I would buy this album so no complaints
Really enjoyable, if a bit repetitive in tone.
Pretty interesting, didn’t know this one. Great backing band and even better backing singers! Some real gems: wearing that loved on look (hooray for the Sadie’s introducing me to it), suspicious minds and in the ghetto.
Classic, older rock. Nice to listen to. My lack of experience with Elvis made it feel like I was listening to Johnny Bravo the whole time, which only amplified the experience.
Never listened to much Elvis but I really enjoyed this album.
I'm in shock - didn't know a single song from this album. But I do love me some Presley so listening to it was a breeze. Such quality live music.
A classic
How could you not like the king. He started it all.
Some of Elvis’ best work.
4 stars by virtue of "In the Ghetto" and "Suspicious Minds" 4/5
Uma muito agradável surpresa. Não conhecia estas canções e interpretações do Elvis. Para já, um álbum fantástico.
amazing
Nice soulful album. A good album for a chill, upbeat mood.
Classic music good for background music
Enjoyable. Not something I'd likely return to but you can see the story telling and the showmanship. I enjoy that.
Elvis!!!!
lol this is fire, wild
hard to knock an album with suspicious minds on it
Class, even if In The Ghetto has been entirely ruined for me by Eric Cartman
Liked this more than I thought I would
They worked Elvis like an old John Deere diesel lawnmower. 30+ movies by this time, why? So many people making money off Elvis. Big Elvis posse leaching and taking advantage of his work ethic which was Sisyphus like...keep pushing that rock! Of course he was drugged up. His voice quality was all over the place. Also E wrapping with the spoken word was a hoot. Elvis get a 4 because of the weight of the barnacles he carried.
My favorite songs are not on this album, still a good listen
Great album. No bad songs. This is the best Elvis sound
Only listened to individual tracks/compilations/playlists. But really enjoying this album, fantastic.
This just felt right as we drove across Tennessee. Not all of these songs sounded live, which I thought they were going to be. Never the less, it’s a solid listen.
What a comeback album from Elvis.
I nearly gave this one a 5. It had a few of his main hits and that classic Elvis sound throughout.
A bunch of decent songs, then In the Ghetto and Suspicious Minds!
Once again, I have really underestimated Elvis. This album is not as sexy as the one I reviewed earlier, and for that I'm knocking it down one star, but damn this man really can sing!
This is the first 'proper' Elvis album I've listened to and it's the closest I feel like I've come to getting it. If I'm right in my understanding this represented a change of approach for him, and it definitely works - having his vocals (excellent) atop these cool soulful instrumentals is a really refreshing take on what I view as the classic Elvis sound and it was a great listen!
There were undertones of Neil Diamondesque cheesiness, but I really had fun listening to this album. Wearin' that Loved On Look, Suspicious Minds, In the Ghetto, I'm Movin On... Great songs. Too bad he didn't write them, but his performance and voice rock.
Classic Elvis.
Amazing sound quality and super energetic.
Very beautiful Music
Better Elvis. Not as dated and dry as earlier stuff. This is almost the version of Elvis I like the best.
That man could sing.
4.5/5. Shake them hips white boi Elvis.
I grew up listening to come of the more well known songs from this album ("In the Ghetto", "Suspicious Minds", "Kentucky Rain") but had never heard some of the other tracks. Right from the opening track "Wearin' That Loved On Look" with its toe-tapping bass and then later, "I'm Movin' On", the talent of the Memphis Boys really shines through. First album I listened to more than once in the day. Don't get some of the hate on the other reviews. This isn't "late" Elvis...this is coming off the heels of the '68 Comeback Special.
An excellent album for many reasons, but mostly b/c it shows us who Elvis is and who he is not. The 'first rock star,' he was a star but not necessarily a rocker. Prolific as a balladeer and a country western crooner, at least on record, he seems hardly to have a sense of humor, which isn't a failing, but can hardly be considered the appropriate stance of one who rocks, i.e., see Chuck Berry and his ding-a-ling. His business was in being austere. When that's understood, it gives a whole new dimension to tracks like 'I'll Hold You In My Heart,' 'In The Ghetto,' 'Don't Cry Daddy,' 'Kentucky Rain,' and 'Mama Liked The Roses.' I'm not so sure he cared about getting us to shake our asses or to move our hips - I think he just wanted us to listen.
oh so that’s why people like elvis
I guess this would be towards the end of Elvis's early career. Can still hear the crowd pleasing, talented performer here. Ateast a couple of timeless songs; "In the Ghetto" and "Suspicious Minds". I am surprises that this is the first Elvis album that has surfaced in over 300 albums.
Wow, finally an Elvis album I actually like!
I went into this album expecting to be bored. The first few songs weren’t all that special to me but the further down the list I went, the more I really enjoyed it! True love travels on a gravel road was when the album really started to pick up for me, perhaps it’s the slower songs that stand out.
My favourite moment in this album happens around 3:22 on I'll Hold You In My Heart
total acuerdo entre los 2
I don't usually like Elvis. That was good
І саме це ми і отримали на From Elvis in Memphis. Long Black Limousine, Any Day Now та In The Ghetto, якнайкраще демонструють нам найбільш чутливий та емоційний вокальний перформанс, що Елвіс коли-небудь видавав. Альбом був прийнятий доволі непогано, а сингл Suspicious Mind, знову вивів «короля» в топ.
this was great. never sat down and listened to an entire Elvis album before, despite my mom being a huge fan. Highlights include: "Wearin' That Loved On Look" "Only the Strong Survive" "I'm Movin' On" "Power of My Love" "Gentle On My Mind" "True Love Travels On a Gravel Road" "In the Ghetto"
The last several songs of this album save this album from being pretty meh. I grew up loving Elvis, used to unbutton so my chest would show and rock my hips, thinking that’s what constituted an Elvis impression. I loved his music and he became one of those people, early in my life I thought was amazing. While he has quite a bit of controversy in life, I don't think anyone can argue with his impact on the music industry. This album, in particular, had some iconic tracks that I’ve been listening to for years like “In the Ghetto”, “Kentucky Rain”, and.. of course.. “Suspicious Minds”(will always be one my favorite Elvis songs). The beginning half of this album wasn’t awful. There were quite a few good songs, a few snoozers here and there in Elvis’s own style, but those songs that I have listed above, saved this for me. Time to go listen to “Suspicious Minds” again. Sorry but the end where the music fades and you think it’s over and then, BAM, the background singers and music just slaps you in the face for even thinking it’d be over yet. I love it and will always love it.
Alright I get the hype. Outside of the last few songs on this album, it was reallllly good. His voice is phenomenal, the music transitioning between rock styles and the use of more classical instruments worked really well together. Only the strong survive, long black limousine, in the ghetto, and suspicious minds were my favorites. Haven’t really listened to anything in his discography before but clearly I’m been missing out!
It's Elvis. 4 stars.
This album delivers some fantastic tracks. I recently watched the Netflix documentary that dives into the making of this performance, and knowing the backstory truly enriches the listening experience.
Very good
Have to say, I enjoyed this one a lot more than the other two Elvis albums I've got so far, despite only knowing one song previously. It's really well produced and there were a few songs that I really enjoyed. Not sure if I'd go back to it again though. I'd say at this point Elvis was probably seen to be "past it", but this shows he still had some fuel in the tank!
Not a big Elvis guy, really, but it cannot be denied that In the Ghetto/Suspicious Minds back-to-back absolutely slaps. It's really 3.5, not 4, but I'm rounding up on principle because Memphis is one of my very favourite places.
Some good songs. Not what I expected.
I never think of Elvis having albums. I be listened to him a lot but never one collection. It’s usually a movie soundtrack or a greatest hits. Fun!
I get Elvis now Playlist adds - Any Day Now, True Love Travels On a Gravel Road, Gentle On My Mind, Wearin' That Loved On Look
My first time listening to an elvis album in its entirety. I can see why he was such a sensation- there are a lot of hits and a lot of energy and emotion in his songs. Especially for the time, im sure the american public had never experienced an act like him before. That being said, there were some moments that got a little sappy for my taste. Overall- probably a 3.5/5 but I think it can safely round to 4
Starts off a bit slow but still a beautiful album. Not the most innovative for its time, but you don't need more with a voice like Elvis and a collection of nice songs. His voice sounds great here and the lush instrumentation keeps even the more basic songs a pleasant listen. In The Ghetto is a great song to end on and the bonus tracks are even better, shame those weren't included on the album originally though. I'm a sucker for this schmalzy honey glazed 60s country pop and this is one of the best albums to do it.
3.5
It's Elvis
A classic example of Elvis. With hits like In the Ghetto and Suspicious Minds mixed in with other great songs like Long Black Limousine and the powerful Don't Cry Daddy, this album is great!
Previously rated: Elvis Is Back (4/5) ********************* I felt like this album was heavily backloaded that doesn't truly get going until 10 songs in, but there is some great stuff here. Suspicious Minds is the best track. Kentucky Rain and In the Ghetto are good hits too. Hidden gem is True Love Travels On a Gravel Road, just the way that line is sung is unique and just...sounds good. Negatives: Elvis is mush-mouthed, too far away from the mic, or too echoed to understand what he is singing on certain tracks. Interesting that I got this the day after seeing his final film as an actor, Change of Habit at our classic films theater. Same year this album came out too.
One of Elvis' later albums. This one has slick production and some good songs; the obvious one-two punch is the sequence of In The Ghetto and Suspicious Minds. I liked it. 3.5/5
Featuring the most baffling fade-out in the history of rock music
Really good Elvis album with more deep cuts than I'm used to.
A solid album. It's surprising how much Elvis talks about crying. A good listen, despite Elvis not really being my thing.
Growing up I heard a lot of Elvis around the house due to my mom, and he was a mainstay on local radio my dad played in the garage every weekend. He has always been a top artist for me, but I have admit that I don’t know how much of that was socialization and how much his actual talent. This album, made 9 years before his death, shows a different side of Elvis: the conflict between the man who loved music and the commercial commodity. Suspicious Minds has always been one of my favorite tracks of his. There are some other tracks, like In The Ghetto, that show his socially conscious side, especially the same year MLK and RFK were killed. What’s interesting is songs like Black Limousine draw a lot on his gossip roots which he reverted to later in his career as his drug addiction and show schedule both escalated to unhealthy levels. Was he “the King” or was he just good marketing? I think a little bit of both. But this is a good album for me!
faves: Gentle on my mind, True love travels on a gravel road, I’ll hold you in my heart
Достойное соул-возвращение Элвиса. In the Ghetto и Gentle On My Mind хороши.
Not my favorite Elvis album, but a solid enough choice. In the Ghetto is always a good listen. Lacks some of the pizazz of his earlier catalogue, but still makes for a pretty good listen.
Showcases his really great voice a good bit. Something about it left me wanting just a little but otherwise a great album. 4.5
From Elvis In Memphis by Elvis Presley This album captures Elvis Presley at a later stage in his career, and while it may not feature him at his creative peak, his natural talent shines through. There’s a sense that Elvis is coasting a bit, delivering the tracks with a certain ease rather than pushing himself. Yet, even a sleepwalking Elvis is better than most artists on their best day, thanks to that extraordinary voice. The material suits him well, with a blend of country, soul, and gospel influences that give the songs a rich texture. Suspicious Minds is, of course, the standout—an iconic track that reminds you just how great he could be when everything came together. Standout Song: Suspicious Minds Score: 4/5
As per usual, loved the bluesy songs, the ballads were ok. This is again like a 3.5 but I'm giving it a 4 to remind myself to listen to it again.
Classic Elvis. Great blues album, with the standout chart being "Suspicious Minds".
Good, but not WOW good.
This is the first full Elvis album I've listened to, so I don't have as much to compare it to, but I thought this was pretty good. I was really hooked on the opening track, Wearin' That Loved On Look. I think the last songs on the album were some of the strongest, like In The Ghetto, and Suspicious Minds, and I also liked Don't Cry Daddy and Mama Liked the Roses because they explore different types of love lost and remembered. There are other songs I might not like if someone else sang them, but he really does have a beautifully unique voice and used it so well.
A 5 with suspicious minds, 4 without. Since I only rate for original track listing it´ll be a 4.
Pleasantly surprised by how many of these songs I really liked. The gospel and blues influences here are verrryyyy strong (I’m Movin’ On is really fun to me because it basically feels like it could be an Aretha Franklin song). However, it is far too long for this kind of music. I didn’t even know they were making 50 minute albums in the 60s — it’s too much. But a lot of these songs were very beautiful and fun and had a really infectious energy so I can get the appeal. Fav tracks: I’m Movin’ On, In The Ghetto, Suspicious Minds
Yeah, that's Elvis alright.
Man, music production changed a lot between the mid-50's to the late 60's.
I remember listening to this years ago, very early into my journey as a music nerd, and not really getting the hype. Believe it or not, after watching the batshit insane Austin Butler Elvis movie, I actually appreciate this album a lot more. Well, and also I loved the Memphis sounds of soul and early RnB that find themselves in the production. Legit pretty great record, an Elvis album I could put on without it feeling hokey or too rockabilly.
Elvis!!!
8/10. Enjoyed the album more than I expected. Voice great as expected but I liked the instrumentals and vibes too.
I really liked it, it gave a different change of pace and I'm wanting to start listening to older music.
definitely better than his debut, elvis evolved throughout the years apparently yay
Always loved Elvis, this website always gives me excuses to listen to albums I never have before. Didn’t disappoint
I didn’t think I’d enjoy this one as much as I did. Apparently, this was a comeback album after years of mediocre releases, and it really worked for me. I’m not much of an Elvis guy, but this album was fantastic. It’s a great balance of rock, soul, and country, and you can tell that Elvis was older and more experienced by the time he recorded it. The album has a mature and sophisticated feel, and his voice is deeper, delivered with so much confidence and presence. You can tell he was fully committed to this project, and it shows in every track. I’ve finally found an Elvis album I’m going to keep in rotation for future listens.
++*: Wearin' That Loved One Look ++: Long Black Limousine, I'm Movin' On, Power of My Love, Gentle on My Mind, Any Day Now, In the Ghetto + Only the Strong Survive, I Hold You in My Heart (Till I Can Hold You in My Arms, It Keeps Right On A-Hurtin', After Loving You, True Loves Travel on a Gravel Road 8,5/10
Me encanta la voz profunda, madura y firme de Elvis. Canciones favoritas: 'True Love Travels on a Gravel Road', 'Suspicious Mind' y 'Mama Liked the Roses'
It's Elvis. I think it sounds good. If there's anything here that was revolutionary, it already revolutionized. It all sounded about average for Elvis which is to say good. The backing band is quality and the performance is always fantastic.
Ok. Never loved Elvis. However the production on this one is just lush. Have a 4 you old devil.
This was pretty enjoyable. I had imagined a trudge through nondescript country songs but was more composed than that. Clear and clean production. In the ghetto followed by suspicious minds was the highlight. Elvis is a specific sound and I think to that end I had decided I didn't like elvis sound/wrote this off before listening. Even still I thought it was good and pleasantly surprised
3.5
Its super good but i liked his “Elvis Presley” album more
every elvis album is an elvis album if ya know what i mean
Good Album, in the ghetto is one of my faves, so 4 stars.
A very nice collection of Elvis tunes. I've always enjoyed In the Ghetto although I am not exactly sure why.
I'd never listened to Elvis before this list. There's really only 2 songs on this track that I've heard before, and I'm surprised by that since they're all incredible examples of both Elvis and the musical era.
Good backing band and particularly like the (new to me) song: I'm Movin' On
I thought this would be dated & tacky but it still sounds great. Really don’t know much about Elvis but I love his voice. ‘Country soul’ is a good description. His voice has gravitas but is also full of warmth, gravity & charisma. These songs are all covers or penned by others but that does mean they are quality songs with decent lyrics sung by a great vocalist with a quality backing band & singers. All quality, a pleasant surprise, further listening & investigation required. Only the final track ‘in the ghetto’ do I know from the KLF sample & it’s brilliant to hear the original.
Best Elvis I've heard. Some was weird, but some was really good. 3.5/5
Probably Elvis’ best LP, as nearly perfect as his sound could get. B+
Mid career Elvis, eh? This is the version that got sampled in Blade Runner 2049? That's certainly the vibe I'm getting, anyway. An enjoyable listen - I quite dig the more croony songs. Fave tracks - "In The Ghetto" is an amazing tune, and the one I was most familiar with going in. The bonus tracks included a cracking rendition of "Suspicious Minds", too. Of the tracks I was less familiar with, "True Love Travels On A Gravel Road" was my fave....
NGL this album jams. I recognize Suspicious Minds (great song) and In the Ghetto, but otherwise, I was unfamiliar with these songs. Not my closest listen, but I thoroughly enjoyed this experience. Probably my favorite Elvis album on the list -- though Blue Moon is my favorite individual track. This is a tight 4 / 5
I liked this album way more than his debut album. Just all around great Rock and Roll I can see why they call him The King. I hope that there is a live album from him on here because I feel like that will really be his bread and butter
One of the best voices ever. There were a couple of snoozers, but it was mostly a good album.
reminds me of nana, who i love
A pretty solid later-era Elvis album. Backing band The Rhythm Boys are the real stars here, especially the phenomenal bass playing of Tommy Cogbill and Mike Leech. Some very tasty rhythm guitar as well. A nice variety of sounds including solo cello, brass, sax, Hammond organ, and dobro though some of the string and backing vocal arrangements get a bit syrupy at times. The album has that hard panned late 60s stereo sound with a big plate reverb present on most of the vocals. The best tracks are mostly later in the album ‘True Love Love Travels On A Gravel Road’ and ‘Suspicious Minds’. ‘Gentle On My Mind’ is great too though not as good as the later Glen Campbell version. Overall an enjoyable listen even if some of the songs are a bit weak. 3.5 / 5.
Always appreciate a good Elvis album. A lot of his music all sounds the same, but I have a soft spot in my heart for him.
I’m diggin this late 60s Elvis mix of soul, country, blues, r&b, and pop. More interesting and developed songs and arrangements than the earlier Elvis album I heard 2 days ago. The bass playing on this album fucking shreds! It’s a bit overproduced and excessive on the strings and horns and such, but that’s the fun of it.
Good album, although probably not in my top list of Elvis Presley LPs.
Ya sonaba desfasado en su día, pero hay que reconocer la voz impresionante de Elvis.
8/10
elvis is great. there's a reason he's a legend. such a shame he sold his soul to vegas. 8/10
The old magic, returned
The King! Pretty good.
Ekstra, nie spodziewałem się, że tak przyjemnie będzie się tego słuchało. 4/5
Not my style, but it's a good album. I can see this being put on as background music in the kitchen. The album just feels good and relaxing. Definitely seems more mature than Elvis' earlier material.
I definitely liked this more than expected. Very theatrical/well orchestrated Elvis. Maybe his last later era big hit record.
The king! How can you not enjoy his sultry smooth voice?!
The King of Rock and Roll for a reason, but I also enjoyed the surprisingly slow tempo on a lot of these songs. I'm also glad that this did not song like a live album, which I assumed from its name. I always associated Elvis more with his image and cult of personality, but he shows his phenomenal singing on this record as well.
01) Wearin' That Loved-On Look - 8,5 02) Only the Strong Survive - 8,0 03) I'll Hold You in My Heart (Till I Can Hold You in My Arms) - 7,5 04) Long Black Limousine - 8,0 05) It Keeps Right On a-Hurtin' - 7,5 06) I'm Moving On - 7,5 07) Power of My Love - 8,0 08) Gentle on My Mind - 8,0 09) After Loving You - 7,5 10) True Love Travels on a Gravel Road - 8,0 11) Any Day Now - 8,5 12) In the Ghetto - 10,0 TOTAL: 8,08 (81/100) Current ranking: 106/322
4 - I enjoyed this, some really good songs. The band were really solid and let him do his thing. I do think he has quite an aura when he sings, but he's almost stepping on Johnny Cash's toes here, and Cash just does it better.
This was so much better than the other Elvis album. Liked a lot of these tracks even beyond In the Ghetto and Suspicious Minds, which are far and away my two fave Elvis tracks. Fave Tracks: Wearin’ That Loved on Look, Only the Strong Survive, Long Black Limousine, Gentle on my Mind, In the Ghetto, Suspicious Minds 4.1/5
Die Platte mit dem Hammersong "Im the Ghetto". Der Rest sehr ruhig, nicht auffällig aber immer die Elvis Stimme welche unvergleichbar ist.
Great bluesy roots with big band elements. Great listen on the road.
Lots of soul, which works so well with his gorgeous voice. A good dash of country. Elvis sounds amazing. Album flows beautifully. Not that many massive hits, but so much good stuff. Beautiful album, fully believe this is one of Elivis' best. Flawless production and his voice control is fantastic.
Such an icon, but after reading his Wiki he seems like such a sad creep. Still a fun album to listen to even though it's not necessarily my preferred genre of music.
mjög dramtískur ballöðu elvis. er að sigla í feita elvis.
I'm not really a fan of Elvis Presley, but it's pretty obvious how talented he was, and how he surrounded himself with great musicians. Pretty good album.
Great "I'm Still Here" moment-level reintroduction to Elvis by way of expertly arranged country-soul. Loving this.
Wearin' That Loved On Look Only the Strong Survive Long Black Limousine Power of My Love In the Ghetto Suspicious Minds Kentucky Rain
This was a fun record! I don't really gravitate towards Elvis very often. I think the crooner style kind of turns me off, but its hard to deny his talent and stage presence. This album had quite a few songs that got stoked though. I really love the blues and rockabilly songs. A few of my favs from this record: * Long Black Limousine -fun blues song. Good story telling. * I'm Moving On -classic! Just fun and groovy. Good rockabilly. * In the Ghetto -just love that he tried to sing about important things. This songs rips though. * Suspicious Minds -probably the best Elvis song? Its got everything. Its fun, its groovy, its fast moving. And it actually does sound suspicious. Really great guitar in this song. * Kentucky Rain -I don't think I'd actually heard this one. Really cool emotional song.
The King. Some bangers on here, but a few that could've been left off. Pretty dang good overall.
Elvis feels like a character. The music is fine, but so ubiquitous and foundational it functions more as a period peice and cultural touchstone than listening material.
Elvis had the juice. On some tracks you can hear him clapping and slapping his knees. You can tell he was feeling it. Even after 50 years, Suspicious Minds is still a killer earworm. Ultimately it reminds me of my grandma so it gets a slight bump.
Good stuff.
I like the Memphis country Elvis
He is the king for a reason
Beautiful record. There's a lot of highlighting of Elvis' crooning and haunting voice on this one, and I love it. "I'll Hold You In My Heart (Till I Can Hold You In My Arms)" is specially haunting (and sometimes even ghoulish!) while still being a pop song. I love "Suspicious Minds", and even though it wasn't written by Elvis, I'm pretty certain that it was Elvis who made the song into the hit that it's been all these years. This is a track that I used to hear my mom playing on her record player / humming around the house when I was growing up. "In The Ghetto" is also great, Elvis' voice is so confident in this one. Solid 4/5.
Man he stole his entire sound from black ppl but damn if he doesnt do it with style
This is a nice album for Elvis… moving from Hollywood back to his musical roots. It is just hard to picture this being released in 1969. It’s almost more retro than fresh.
Sure, it’s calculated hit making with plenty of Elvis mannerisms. But it is also genuinely jouyous and brimming with life. Organic and tight musicianship with good writing and production.
In The Ghetto through the end of the album is what's giving this 4 stars. Without those songs, it's just a meh album.
Couldn’t finish it, was t in the mood for that style of music but it was a good album for the songs I did hear
I don't care much for Elvis, in general, certainly not Rock'n'Roll Elvis, but this is muttonchops Elvis, just before he fully transitioned to Las Vegas Elvis, at his absolute and comprehensive Elvis peak and that is honestly pretty damn grand. The band, the background singers - Power of My Love! - chef's kiss. Initially, I was rather bored, but then 3:22 in "I'll Hold You in My Heart" happened and I started to grinningly cherish this whole Elvis experience and before I knew it, "In The Ghetto" was playing and I'd had a proper good time. So, yeah. I still don't care much for Elvis, but this is a great record.
an odd middle period in Elvis's career -- between the heartthrob movie star sell-out and the gun-toting Vegas gospel singer with Coke cups on his piano, there was a period that felt... oddly classy? Young Elvis, Movie Elvis, Classy Elvis, Fat Elvis? sure. im somewhat surprised how enjoyable this LP is given Elvis's reputation as a jukebox king rather than a beast of the album era, but barring a throwback or two, it feels coherent and progressive. i dunno, maybe it's a dirty trick to use the back-up singers on so many songs but it's a damn good trick. there's a couple duds, like "After Loving You" or "It Keeps Right On A-Hurtin'", but i can really only call them duds insofar as they remind me more of Movie Elvis than the tracks surrounding them do. who knows what would have happened if Elvis kept making album albums instead of "compilation of studio recordings" albums? did the King have a Sgt. Pepper's in him? we'll probably never know, but if it was true in another world i doubt i'd be surprised.
His intention seems to have been to keep up with all the new music of the late 60’s but stay Elvis and the result was pretty great. Particularly Suspicious Minds, which is one of the greatest songs ever. The southern soul sound is my favorite Elvis. That said, can’t shake the feeling that he’s impersonating other genres and performing other people’s songs (which he was), like an extremely good cover band.
Super fun listen. Havent heard most of these, but I found most of the album very easy to pay attention to. Kentucky Rain was my favorite track
So many classics on here (Gentle on my Mind, Suspicious Minds, In the Ghetto…). Enjoyed this a ton.
I’ve never gotten into Elvis, but this is a really good album.
Very good. Incredible voice.
Memphis Shit. Very cool. Power of Love demonstrates that though he was imitating bluesmen, gospel singers, his take on it became his own thing. The memphis boys are a good backing. The hiccups, and stutters and repeats are effective, young boy was a stylist. Love the spoken word bits. Shame about Tom Parkers weird ass managment of him. King is dead, long live the King.
Not the best soul album, country album, blues album or rock album but pretty good for all of those. I surprisingly enjoyed it even though Cartman ruined The Ghetto.
Damn, an Elvis record that I actually like
This album was good. It felt very emotional. Lots of sad songs and songs about love. Typical Elvis. Not a bunch of hits, which I liked. I thought it was good.
Just The king
Forgot how much I love Elvis’ voice. This album is certainly a vibe and suspicious minds will always be a favorite.
Am I bugging out, or does Elvis' voice on "Wearin That Loved On Look" sound exactly like Cher?
I liked this. I liked the bluesy sound. Glad I listened to it. By this time in 1969, I was finding my own musical path, and Elvis wasn't on it any more. Maybe because he was so mainstream, or maybe because Mom liked him? IDK, but he WAS a part of growing up, and added to my musical background.
Best Elvis album I've heard yet, though I haven't heard that many. Love the Memphis sound and the recording of Gentle on My Mind, written by a friend of my Dad's when he was a kid: John Hartford. I'm sorry that the original release ended on In the Ghetto because Suspicious Minds is my favorite Elvis song--guess that was only added as a bonus track in a later release.
Didn't completely manage to finish, but from what I heard no wonder they call him the king
Elvis has that swagger. He's just got "it" and you can't explain what it is. At face value, his music isn't better than anyone else's of the time. What makes it better is Elvis. There's something in his presence that makes. you pay attention. I probably won't listen again but every song caught my ear.
pretty good album, elvis is a legend, nice and chill 4/5
Solid album.
Pretty good album. Although didn't Elvis lowkey appropriate rock n roll from black artists. Idk - 8/10
This was better than I was expecting. Background vocals were nice. High 4.
Pretty good, I like elvis as a novelty but don’t listen on the reg 7/10
Definitely understand the appeal here. Really enjoyed listening to the full album, don’t know how much I’ll want to go back to individual songs
Exactly what you want from an Elvis record!
a really good and surprisingly emotional album!! i feel like springsteen might have really liked this one growing up
very listenable, pretty enjoyable actually. genuinely no problems. gentle on my mind (the og) is such a good song, and this cover is decent fs
Day175 - another cool listen from the king. wearin that loved on look was the highlight for me, the momma and daddy songs not so much
Of course I have "heard" Elvis. I know the memes and the cultural phenomena and the whole thing. What I didn't do was grow up in that era, or know his catalog of music. I do like his movies, but I am not sure I paid full attention to the music. So my musical exposure to Elvis is often limited to snippets and soundbites heard "in the wild" or in pieces in movies and the like. Listening to a full album I am astonished by his range, in his voice and style-wise. His lyrics range from playful to tragic and they don't have that all too common pretense to BE sad songs. He makes it easy and when this album ended and my playlist started (automatically as it is) I was somewhat disappointed not to hear a few more "Elvis songs."
song reco: suspicious minds ⭐⭐⭐⭐ classic album.
I'm an Elvis fan, but this era isn't my favorite. It's better than so many other albums on this list though. Suspicious Minds is a classic.
Favorite Tracks: Suspicious Minds In the Ghetto
Obviously classic, quite comforting, gives me gramophone vibes.
Quite enjoyed it
It’s Elvis. What more is there to say.
such a vibe - much like other music i already enjoy - very foundational for artists i listen to today like teddy swims and paul cauthen. so romantic and honest - but gentle melody and comforting.
It’s got a good cohesion to it. I’d come back to it.
Elvis was unsurprisingly masterful. He’s just got that undeniable Tennessee twang and he picks and chooses his songs so well!! Nice to finally do a bit of a deeper dive.
Loved this. Didn't get to listen as thoroughly as I wanted to so it's definitely going on my list for the next couple weeks. 4.5/5
Wonderful. Everything was so cool and bluesy and Elvis-y. Excellent album, four stars.
Enjoyable, I think I ended up listening to it at least 1.5 times
i mean, Elvis is a GOAT in his own right when it comes to music, but i can't say i've ever sat down and listened to a full album. i actually really liked this a lot more than i thought i would. some weird songs on the back half of the records... but overall i enjoyed this a lot.
Well everyone knows Elvis. Gotta admit never heard an album though. 1) good guitar. I’d say in 1969 this was on the cusp of being outdated upon release 3) yeah that’s Elvis 4) more Elvis 6) I like the more upbeat songs backed with a band. The solo piano songs are classic Elvis but I don’t listen to Elvis Gentle on my mind is nice In the ghetto is classic And suspicious lies is one of his best, which is saying a lot. Ooh a fade out fade back in. Tricksy Don’t cry daddy has a bit more ‘modern’ sound. Opening instrumentation Kentucky rain good Ends on a crooner. Glad I heard this. More variety than expected, a real solid album right before the explosion of bands like Led Zeppelin 4star
Solid album from that era. More country feel than I was expecting.
A good album with Elvis songs I haven't heard before. I liked Suspicious Minds, Long Black Limousine and I'll Hold You In My Heart.
You can hear the joy in his voice and his songs. Beyond his normal bravado, the man was so happy to get to do something he wanted to do after years. The Memphis band really added that saccharine quality along with the melismatic orchestrations that just sticks the songs in your head and keeps you coming back
Not a fan of Elvis, but he was a top notch performer.
It’s taken me a while to get over the idea that Elvis is my grandma’s music- though it literally is, she would play it all the time- but I’m glad I did because he’s pretty goshdarned good.
suspicious minds gives this album an extra star
nice elvis
It’s hard not to enjoy this era of Elvis Presley. Even though it’s not the sort of music I would normally listen to, his voice is too good not to like it.
Favorite Elvis!
Liked it quite a bit 👍 the drums and bass sound incredible. Peak Vegas Presley?
Hard to beat Elvis for iconic voice and sound. Didn't have many of his bigger hits, but still enjoyable.
A great collection of songs, perfect for driving in the mountains. Nice variety of instrumentation.
A really great album - Elvis has a wonderful voice and these songs are pretty solid. Good mix of soul/R&B with a country twist. It's no wonder that he was called The King - I know he stole from artists but damn he has a soothing voice.
It's good for what it is but I've never loved Elvis
Yes what a show
