Elvis rules
Although not a fan of Elvis, he is a legend and singing icon. This album was OK because it was a later one. Didn't like the early fifties pure rock n roll he did although I recognise these are classics. Songs featured on here such as Suspicious Minds, In the ghetto and Daddy don't cry are haunting ballads. This deserves its place in the album Hall of fame
4 starts for inclusion of suspicious minds 🤌
Better than I expected
Classic Elvis. Chill vibes
Probably peak Elvis for me. When you think about what you want from EAP, it's the voice, isn't it, and here he has absolute full power without going into the Las Vegas era croon. Also, in Suspicious Minds and In The Ghetto, it has two songs that time has not dimmed in the slightest. Side note: isn't it weird to hear the non-live version of Suspicious Minds? I can't really think of another song where a live version is so much better known that the original (No Woman, No Cry?). It's not a five, because there's too many fairly derivative songs, but even they have the pleasure of hearing The King sing.

I enjoy a bit of late period Elvis, and the highs on this are very enjoyable
This album was an unexpected joy. The sound is so warm and Elvis' voice is buttery goodness.
I’m not the biggest Elvis fan, but this is a pretty inspired performance. Elvis’ voice is great throughout and I love the background vocal performances. It opens up with the excellent Westin’ That Loved On Look. Long Black Limousine is another early highlight for me. On the back half Suspicious Minds is a standout with it’s infectious chorus. Overall this is easily my favorite Elvis record that I’ve listened to; there’s a warm vibe to the entire recording and a more developed sound over his mid to late fifties works. The arrangements remind me of some of Sinatra’s best work and Elvis’ vocals here are just as strong. It’s really an excellent record from beginning to end.
As far as Elvis goes, it was pretty solid! Elvis is just not my favorite in general.
Very solid
i never really realise how good elvis is
I took a course on Elvis Presley in college. No kidding. I wrote a 30 page paper on Elvis’ relationship to John Lennon. For real! I got an A! Best research ever. That being said, I’m something of an Elvisologist myself. I do prefer early Elvis, his Sun Records stuff is fantastic. I like him most when he’s crooning. But, I think “Don’t” is my favorite of his, because of his vocal performance. BUT we cannot overlook Late 60s Elvis! He did some good stuff during this time period, and this album has some good, and some iffy (Power of My Love is pretty rapey), songs. And, at times, that crooning came through. This is a solid album, and I give it a 4.
The King.
I liked this way more than I expected, definitely some out of pocket songs though.
suprisingly went hard 4/5
Nice album - great songs done as only Elvis can.
I liked it! Obviously I loved suspicious minds and I appreciated a lot of what Elvis was doing for the genre here, but personally I wanted a lot more rock and roll. That doesn’t mean that this isn’t a classic though. Definitely could notice some Beatles vibes which was odd. I don’t think of them as contemporaries but it makes sense. Favorite songs are “Suspicious Minds”, “Only The Strong Survive”, and “Any Day Now”.
Really great collection of songs. Production is great, filled with strings, brass, etc. Really makes Elvis’s voice pop in these songs. Delivery is great, background vocalists are a nice touch as well. The worst songs are just good. Some songs are similar, but a majority of the tracks are distinct and memorable. Standouts: Only the Strong Survive, I’ll Hold You In My Heart, Gentle On My Mind, Suspicious Minds, Don’t Cry Daddy, Mama Liked the Roses.
I gotta say - after reading a lot of people destroying this album in the comments, I was really not expecting much. This thing slaps for what it is. Old man Elvis is not going to bring much musical innovation, but although it’s a bit kitschy, there are a lot of good songs on here! Notable tracks include wearing that loved on look, long black limousine, after loving you, I’m moving on, in the ghetto, and suspicious minds.
I didn’t really grow up as an Elvis fan. My parents were Beatles fanatics. I remember my best friend’s mom and sister loved Elvis. That was my only exposure. I remember watching the Hawaii concert on laser disc. Yeah, laser disc. Though I find that Elvis had a tendency to sort of overdo his enunciations, I find that I enjoy him now. This album had some good songs on it. I listened to the reissue from 2000. It had several additional songs, including “Suspicious Minds”. That helped anchor this collection.
I feel like the album is a good mix of soulful, country grit, and showy orchestration. That reaches a peak at I’m moving on and the power of my love. Great bass playing by Cogbill throughout.
Things that stand out to me: - Elvis performance (obvi) - Reggie Young’s guitar. So clean yet soulful and just fits exactly what each song needs. - The backup singers. So soulful and pop in at the right minutes - Suspicious minds. All of those come together on this song and I love it. Of course can’t forget this inspiring the Cartman version of In the ghetto. So weird. A lil sleepy at times but I dug it. 3.5 with a kings round up.
It's Elvis. And Suspicious Minds is one of the best songs Ever!
Excellent
Elvis, my beloved ❤️
Dated but great. In the Ghetto a standout
This is The King at his very best. Great songs performed brilliantly. Love it.
He’s the freakin king for a reason. Shame on me for being scared that I wouldn’t like it. I wish it had a few more bangers on here for me to give it a five but overall just straight up good music. Love the blues, country, gospel vibe.
I was pleasantly surprised by this album. I’ve heard all the hits so this was a great introduction to more of his discography. I can start to see why Elvis had so much hype surrounding him. I liked this one from beginning to end. The mixture of blues, country, and a little bit of gospel was wonderful.
Late 60's is not 50's Elvis but this album still have great music. The bonus tracks are probably the best, which I have to exclude for the review.
HL: “Only the Strong Survive”, “I’m Movin’ On”, “Any Day Now”, “In the Ghetto”, “Suspicious Minds” (bonus) Interesting mix of soul & country. Big, glitzy, showy production, but this is the KING. If Elvis can’t do it then who can? “Suspicious Minds” is definitely my favourite Elvis song, so the orchestra/choir didn’t exactly come as a shock. More enjoyable than the last Elvis on this list, Elvis is Back! (1960) This should be called Elvis is Back, For Real This Time I Swear Edit: oh snap, “In the Ghetto” is technically the last track, so “Suspicious Minds” and co. are bonus tracks. The album’s still good without them, thankfully
Loved it
Well, Elvis is Elvis. Velvety voice, great songs.
There’s no excuse for Wayne Coyne’s voice
A gritty and strong vocal performance from the King. A lovely introduction to a more expansive catalog of tracks.
I honestly don't know if I will seek this out and listen to it again, but it is good.
Pretty good. I liked In the Ghetto.
You could feel the power in his voice. Truly an icon.
This album and the prior Elvis TV special are my two favorite things Elvis has ever done (if “Suspicious Minds” had been included in the original release of From Elvis in Memphis, then it would probably be my favorite, but it’s interesting that the original release left out one of Elvis’s best songs). They’re the culmination of a decade of Elvis changing music forever and then a few years of garbage music that probably could’ve been great with different collaborators. These two albums were truly a comeback, and while it’s hard to say they’re the highlight of his career (when clearly he was at his peak in the 50s), these are definitely the highlights for me. The more modern recording technology compared to the 50s and the shift to a type of soul music is what really makes this album for me. The Elvis TV special was like a victory lap of great music Elvis had recorded over his career, but Memphis had Elvis recording new tracks incorporating elements of every part of his career: pop, rock and roll, country, blues, soul, and gospel. I’d actually be hard pressed to find an album that blends so many different genres so flawlessly. One thing that’s awesome to me is that this was recorded in the same studio as Dusty Springfield’s Dusty in Memphis only a few months later, and the two albums feature most of the same backing musicians. Both of these albums are the best of their respective artists’ careers, and it goes to show how important the recording location and collaborators are to making great music.
This was better than Eminem led me to believe. Elvis was kind of the go-to pop culture joke in the late twentieth century, so it’s kind of weird to give him an honest listen. It was pretty enjoyable really (still hoping to see the original blues men make their appearance tho)
Solid, In The Ghetto is a favourite of mine. From the album title I was expecting this to be a live album.
Magnífico!!!
Really enjoy the mixing on this album at times. Blues guitar really forward and vocals mixed to the back is quite interesting, especially for the time and with such a famous voice. The gospel influences were great, really nostalgic. Fav tracks: “True Love Travels on a Gravel Road”, “Suspicious Minds”, and “Mama Liked the Roses”. 3.75/5
the king will always be the king.
Spotify took me listening to this whole album to mean that I love Elvis.
a bit rough, but any day now takes it to 4 stars, gave me chills
Solid album. Some really good tracks and enjoyed it more than expected.
Very good fave so far
Love his voice, love most of his songs
classic good Elvis
This was the first studio album after the 68 special. Elvis was still a little unsure of himself. Still a great album.
Elvis past his prime is still Elvis. Such a powerful voice.
Considering what an Elvis fan my mother was, I'm honestly surprised by how few of these songs I've heard before.
I wasn't familiar with most of the songs on this album. It was surprisingly good. A bit bluesy with that early rock/r&b sound.
Classic ‘Vis.
Great combo of country/soul with that classic Elvis sound mixed in. I’d give this a full five stars if there weren’t a few tracks in the middle I felt were kinda slow and similar sounding
This is my first time listening to Elvis. I liked it a lot but his singing style bothered me after a while. I did enjoy the variety of moods and instruments throughout.
This is great. A lot of cheesiness and some heavy-handed messages (Long Black Limousine would be great if it wasn't all "SHE'S DEAD GET IT?"), but it still works for me. Maybe a little dated at this time, but if you take yourself back to 1969 this would be pretty awesome.
Very dated but the quality still shows. I really liked most of the songs with only a few moments otherwise
Good
Not his best album. It seems like he was trying to tie more contemporary styles in with the classic 50s stuff he was accustomed to.
Nice Elvis album. A full Elvis album has the danger of getting boring but this one didn't, and side B was actually more enjoyable than side A. Stand-outs: Gentle on My Mind, Any Day Now
Standouts: In the Ghetto, Gentle on My Mind, Any Day Now, 3.5
Sehr gut!
- The haunting, somewhat jaded version of Elvis Presley that I prefer. Most of his sound that I like is contained in this album. - I do believe that the history associated with the album is arguably better than the album itself.
The 1st rock n roll I ever heard. The versatile King still holds up.
I’m not a big Elvis fan, but you gotta give the guy credit. He was one of a kind. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the country/gospel mashup of this album. Long Black Limousine sounds straight out of church. In the Ghetto! Suspicious Minds! Solid gold. Maybe I’m an Elvis fan now. 4.4
This Elvis era is fine has a few good jams especially Suspicious Minds. I wish there was more rhythm section and less strings but overall a good listen
Long Black Limousine sounds like Presley talking to his future dead self. As a small town country boy he was well aware of his own excess and vices, including fancy cars. It was said he chose the song with a sense of dark determinism. It was him saying "If this is how I'm going to die, I might was well do what I do and sing a song about it." Maybe Elvis didn't go out as metal as he thought, but facing that fear and turning it into art is all rock 'n roll.
The king
This was a really nice surprise. I like the addition of the Stax style backing to Elvis's vocals.
Good but not for me.
Gentle on my mind: I like the bass line. It accompanies the voice so nicely. In The Ghetto: ist mein Favorit. Super
Alle bekannt und gut.
Stood out. Good working music. Will probably throw it on again at some point.
Not a big fan of crooning Elvis and the music was quite predictable. Nevertheless, the instrumentation and instrumental performances were solid. Specially enjoyed the (not flashy but effective) organ and bass, the horns not so much. Songs had a sense of purpose and ended before their ideas became boring.
I was always a fan of Elvis' greatest hits so listening to an album was exciting. So many songs in this album I enjoyed! I recommend this album to Elvis fans and fans of his rock'n roll, bluesy style. Favorite Song(s): "Wearin' That Loved On Look", "Only The Strong Survive", "Long BLack Limousine", "In The Ghetto", "Suspicious Minds"
Elvis music always makes me smile. This had several songs I hadn’t heard.
Easy listening, good vibes a couple songs I really didnt care for towards the end
Schlicht einzigartig.
The blues and the rhythms keep me wanting more. I think haters dislike Elvis because he sounds like an impression but they don’t realize he’s the OG. He invented his style. Classic album.
Fantastic audio engineering and production, sonically fantastic, great bass sounds and mix, and classic old-school stereo with drums hard-panned to one side. Not sure if Elvis' best album, In The Ghetto amazing and love the arrangments...but might pick another album if only get one for Elvis.
Zeugnis einer Ära
Superstar for a reason
Some classics on this one for sure.
Can see using songs from this album in transition parts in scripts.
In the ghetto is one of the most insane songs ever penned. Just totally wild that was a hit even accounting for “it was a different time” It always makes me laugh to hear Elvis plead with the recipient of a song to believe him or cry about his partner being suspicious of him, ELVIS PRESLEY. Only a couple songs on here that really drag. Great overall
I mean, it's Elvis, c'mon.
I love how smooth his voice is, as well as the arrangements of many of the songs, especially “Suspicious Minds” and “Kentucky Rain”.
I’ve never listen to an Elvis album before but I liked it a lot more than I thought I would
really good! - Elvis hitting his prime before he gets distracted.
After the Comeback Special Live album Elvis comes his first studio album, and it's a great album! Putting a Memphis spin on a number of Country covers with a great backing band, he's not phoning it in. As I'm more familiar with the Ronnie Milsap version, hearing his cover that's closer to the original recording was a delight. I'll Hold You in My Arms, I'm Movin' On, In the Ghetto, and Kentucky Rain are among my favorites, but they're all pretty solid.
The singing, the backing band and the production of the album are top notch. Some songs are really great though some of them are quite weak, too kitschy/schmalzy and don't have the energy that the Elvis songs had in the 50s. Still it is a great record overall.
i understand now how it's become a classic
Easy listening for what it is. He was certainly talented but also the very definition of overrated. I'm with Public Enemy on this one.
Short and sweet album about love, super strong voice from Elvis.
Love Elvis. In my top 10 for sure and with a few of his great songs, I like this album.
Tältäkö elvis kuullostaa.. wth.... kaveri vaan laulaa hyvin... incredible skill but no cock???
Hell yeah, maybe its age but Elvis gets more fun the older I get. when he's not deepthroating a microphone he puts his stellar vocals to use. truly one of a kind. Only the Strong Survive and Suspicious Minds (obviously) are my favorite tracks off this one
Really enjoyed this. Suspicious Minds is THE GOAT
Undeniably good performer. Top tier production, but some dull tracks kill the momentum.
First time listening to an Elvis album front to back. Felt much more country than I originally anticipated. While not adding tracks to my favorites, I generally enjoyed the entire album from start to finish. Fav Tracks: Gentle On My Mind, True Love Travels on a Gravel Road, In the Ghetto
Top notch '70s Elvis. In the Ghetto, Don't Cry Daddy, Suspicious Minds. Fantastic. Great country/soul band to change up the sound. The comeback album for Elvis!!
Lacks some of the 50’s rockabilly energy from Elvis but it’s still the King.
King elvis but not his best album
The album currently on my record player at home is Orville Peck's Pony. As I listened to this today, Elvis's emotional operatic country/gospel/rocknroll belting was 1) delightful gravy to my ears and 2) clearly the blueprint of sooooo many singers to come, whether they acknowledge it or not. The first listen, I thought it was too long. The second listen, I was upset it was over and my algorithm gave me some of yesterday's Buddy Holly.
A bold direction from Elvis that has both hits and misses. A worthy effort. That said, any album containing "In the Ghetto" must be docked one star. This is non-negotiable.
Full disclosure: I really, really wanted to not like this album going in. But man, this was so good. The stuttering singing style that usually makes me dislike listening to Elvis was either not nearly as prevalent as usual or perfectly blended in to the rest of the music here. Favorite track: Power of my Love
Liked this, wouldn’t be a go-to but don’t mind it.
Some absolutely undeniable bangers on here, but a bit too much crooning
- Elvis sound just like Tom Jones. - Some kind of signature "Las Vegas" sound
A great Elvis album when you’re sick of the hits.
I forgot so much about Elvis. I liked that this offered a different song selection. Still, I look forward to something from earlier in his career. I think much of my rating in this one stems from nostalgia. I do live hearing him sing “Suspicious Minds.”
Enjoyed the more somber songs at the end of the album
Phenomenal
Classic. Good.
1st album of his that I've listened to. This Elvis guy is going places.
Really good. I like earlier Elvis a little better. Wearin' That Loved On Look was a highlight for me.
It’s the king! Favorite was suspicious minds
Very good album, would listen to many of them again
Bit samey but kinda love elvis so enjoyed anyways, still a pretty unique voice
Nice album with some classics
A fun listen. Elvis has an impeccable voice that many wish could come close to having. And in this record, it is definitely the highlight of every composition. I do feel that there will never be anyone who can hold a candle to Elvis. In fact, I think people who try to sing like him stylistically get ignored. Unless they are doing an impression. But he clearly cemented his voice in music history. I always wondered what Elvis could have done in different genres aside from Gospel, Country, or Rock and Roll (genres he's known for). I frequent Elvis' music. And I will continue to.
good job lad.
Leuk album. Goede stem, goede teksten, goede gitaar. Ik luister te weinig Elvis.
I'm loving this and to be honest I did not think I would like this Elvis album. 10 out 10 for just the sound of his voice, truly an amazing talent.
"Suspicious Minds" and "True Love Travels on a Gravel Road" are standouts. "In the Ghetto" is embarrassing and of its time. By turns great and mawkish. 3.5 rounded up all for those first two tracks.
Aangenaam om naar te luisteren. Goede teksten, leuke gitaar, goed gezongen. Ik luister te weinig Elvis
nice
elvis stop eating the microphone Strong 4
Some songs are a bit generic and I found myself zoning out about halfway uin but all in all, a solid soul-country album. Suspicious Minds is a banger and the enthusiasm and grandeur of the song make it no surprise it became such a hit.
Enjoyed this album!
Solid album and includes two of his biggest songs.
Weirdly loved this album: honestly I never saw myself loving Elvis but this was pretty amazing. My immediate love for this has waned since listening but it's still undoubtably a really enjoyable album. Had the hit song of 'Suspicious minds' but other than that it was all new material to me. Overall quite enjoyable but a bit samey.
He’s a great singer. Obviously. First songs are ok and then it just keeps getting better almost until the end. Favorite song: suspicious minds.
Sounds really enjoyable
A classic, good vibes, good sound.
Lovely stuff
Classic Elvis. Sounded Great.
Okay
Better than I expected even if it has a decent amount of schmaltz sprinkled over the tracks.
A good solid soulful blues rock and roll record - without any of the Elvis bangers, yet still a solid record end to end.
While not as vocally strong as some of his earlier albums, From Elvis in Memphis has strong bones. Kentucky Rain is a new favorite of mine, while Suspicious Minds is timeless.
Cant go wrong with the King. Some of the songs are a bit sappy. In the Ghetto was absolutely ridiculous lol
Letkeetä elvistä myöhäisiltaan Nautin tästä kyllä enemmän kuin ajattelin Suspicious Minds ehkä tuttu ja paras
I often think about how famous Elvis was to still be in the zeitgeist today. 3.5
This is probably my favorite Elvis material outside of the Sun Sessions. Finally free from the silly movie soundtracks, he could make some real music again. I dig the country-soul sound.
Was not super into it at first, but over time I started to appreciate it. Definitely top-tier Elvis to me, it's less cliche overall and more soulful blues at times. 3.5 up to 4.
He sings cheesy love songs and tells gloomy stories in a single record, but none of it feels out of place. Only Elvis, I guess. The latter is easily a lot better than the former though, which feels too commercial, too Vegas bar music. It's like Elvis was just going through the motions. But then he comes alive during the later songs, especially in that stretch from In the Ghetto to the last song of the album. They're more mature and better suited for Elvis at this later stage of his career. There's a bit of heartbreak and age in the way he sings those tracks too, which was partly reminiscent of Johnny Cash's last set of albums. Also, this album has Suspicious Minds - which is easily his best song. Other standouts were In the Ghetto, and It Keeps on Right A-Hurtin + Gentle on My Mind.
Solid Elvis album. Being one of my dad and grandmother's favorite artists Presley was a cornerstone of my childhood. I've always enjoyed his music, but I really enjoyed this one. Old Elvis (age-wise), developing that sort of raspy voice and hearing it was magical. Overall well done, not 100% perfect, but exceptionally well done. Strong 2nd half.
O filme eh melhor tho
first listen a good album
Enjoyed that more than I thought I would!
they call him the king for a reason
Watched the Elvis biopic recently which rekindled my interest in The King so thought I'd come back to this. The thing with Elvis is his voice has a richness and charm that still sounds impeccable years later. This album comes at the start of the Las Vegas era which is all about performance - the production is full of bells and whistles. It's a spectacle but one that can seem tried hard at points, certainly against what else was coming out in the late sixties. Depsite that, there are some brilliant moments on this - Elvis was Elvis for a reason. Have since read more about the man and it's fascinating. Probably the most drugged up man in rock & roll history, but he didn't know it (doctors gave him 800 pills for a ten day tour). Easily the most famous musician of his time yet a man who was ultimately a loner deep into delusional conspiracies (see the Berry letter to Nixon on YouTube). A man who only knew who to say Yes and at the same time capable of some of the stand out records of the 20th century. A true enigma, an all american rockstar icon. Strongly worth a listen.
Jeg liker Elvis
d'habitude il me saoule mais là bizarrement j'ai bien aimé
They always say your a Elvis or a Beatles man, I think that's a fun thing to say and while I am a hardcore Beatles guy, there is some Elvis stuff that is undeniable and this has some great tracks.
Howdy folks, it's Mr. New Vegas, and I have a good feeling about all of you listening. 7/10
Still riding high off the phenomenal success of his ‘68 comeback special (and finally free from the interminable grind of soundtrack albums), Elvis incorporates soul and blues into his repertoire. From the edgy swagger of I’m Moving On to the quivering pathos of In the Ghetto, he demonstrates great range and passion.
This is the definition of crooner. His voice is the highlight. He shows he has a wonderful and versatile voice for country, blues and regular Elvis tunes.
Quality performance.i just wasn't complety drawn in. I'll give it a 4 but it would be more like a 3.5 in my book.
This is a top Elvis album. Really unique I think even today and good variation.
It's a nice listen all the way through. I actually came to like it the more I listened. Plenty of toe-tapping tunes, nice production, nice instrumentation, backing vocals and so on. Once again, I love the brass, and I love the violins. Suspicious Minds remains an all-time classic, but I've also saved a bunch of other tracks too including Long Black Limousine, I'm Movin' On, Power of My Love and Gentle on My Mind.
Love it! Not the most spectacular group of songs but this is before his revival into the white suit era, and just after his comeback, a unique moment in his career. Good production, country focused, he kills it as always.
His departure from purely Rock & Roll and addition of country elements added another layer to his music and made it immediately more interesting and timeless. Fronted by 2 of his staple songs, this album deserves a 4
I’m torn between a 3 and a 4 here. Long Black Limousine is by far the best track imo, but is a cover. Kentucky rain was also good. The rest are solid. I’ll go with a 4 because I recently saw the bio pic.
This is more country/adult contemporary Elvis than rock and roll Elvis. That said his voice sounds great and the backing band is top notch. There are a couple of excellent guitar parts. My favorite one is in Power of my Love. While this is a very good album, I can't say it's great.
This album was awesome!!
I can see why he was so popular. Lots of good tunes here.
It’s always pleasant to get an Elvis album. I’m not saying that every song by him is amazing, but I’ve yet to hear a song that I’d consider to be bad. With that in mind, let’s listen to today’s album! Songs I already knew: In The Ghetto, Suspicious Minds Favourites: In The Ghetto, Suspicious Minds, Don’t Cry Daddy This is the second Elvis album I’ve reviewed after Elvis Is Back. I did enjoy today’s album, but I don’t think it was quite as strong as the other one. From Elvis In Memphis starts off pretty strong, has a bunch of decent moves on the middle but nothing fantastic, and then builds up again towards the end. In my opinion, the album would have felt stronger if a few songs were cut and the album was a little shorter, but I do want to reiterate that it was still a very enjoyable album. Overall, I do recommend this as it was still good fun.
Big fan of Elvis and i really enjoyed this one.
Goodness - I am so impressed with this site's choices!
nice thing
From Elvis in Memphis is an iconic album by Elvis Presley, released in 1969, that showcases his remarkable talent and versatile voice. The album marked a significant departure from Presley's previous works, incorporating soul, R&B, and country influences into his rock and roll style. The album kicks off with the upbeat and energetic "Wearin' That Loved On Look," and from there, it takes us on a journey through a range of emotions and styles. Songs like "Long Black Limousine" and "In the Ghetto" display Presley's ability to convey raw emotion and storytelling through his voice, while "Stranger in My Hometown" and "True Love Travels on a Gravel Road" showcase his versatility as he transitions between genres. From Elvis in Memphis is an album that captures Presley's talent and evolution as an artist. It remains a testament to Presley's enduring legacy as one of the greatest performers of all time.
This is a solid Elvis album. I really like this era where he's singing more soulful songs and seems to have a bit more integrity in the choices he's making still. Standout Tracks: Wearin' That Loved On Look, Long Black Limousine, I'm Movin' On, Power of My Love, After Loving You, Any Day Now, In the Ghetto
Elvis is altijd goed.
The King's partial return to form after he finally gave up on his movie career. One or two plodders stops this being 5 stars, but I love pretty much everything about this - the songs, the performances, the American Sound Studio production. A great set of songs, and In The Ghetto has to be up there as one of Elvis' finest later recordings.
Elvis's best album since the 1950s by a country mile. The material is far better than anything else he recorded in the 60s and he is in very fine voice. Some great tracks here - In the Ghetto and Suspicious Minds (although not sure the latter was on the original recording) but some of the lesser known numbers are pretty good too - I'm Moving On in particular. There are a few slightly cheesy numbers, but overall this is a strong recording
So good. And a great reminder of what the King was capable of, which is particularly useful for those raised on the TV ads for mail-order greatest-hits collections. Elvis is obviously relaxed and comfortable with the material and the arrangements and bands suit his big (but not too big or too forced) style of laying into the songs. There is considerable consistency here and one realizes that a few of one's faves ("Kentucky Rain" and "Suspicious Minds") were post-release add-ons, but "Gentle on My Mind" and "True Love Travels" and "Only the Strong Survive" are all outstanding as full-on Elvis-at-his-most-Elvisish manifestations. Despite the huge – and self-inflicted – risk of massive sentimentality and schmaltziness, it just works, which, one supposes what is meant by "it's good to be the King."
Can't believe I've never purposefully listened to Elvis before. Great sound and lyrics. Favorite track: "True Love Travels on a Gravel Road."
A few great songs but overall fairly enjoyable.
\begin_rant: How the hell did 'Suspicious Minds', perhaps the greatest song Elvis ever recorded, not end up on this album? Which absolute buffoon made that decision? It fills me with immense rage. \end_rant. Okay, I think I get Elvis now. This is some good stuff. We have an exceptionally strong start with 'Wearin' That Loved On Look', and the crooning 'I'll Hold You in My Heart (Till I Can Hold You in My Arms)' showcases a tight backing band with amazing dynamics. Elvis' voice really is incredible, especially on 'True Love Travels on a Gravel Road', and then 'In the Ghetto' is a perfect closer. Plenty of memorable moments, but also a handful of less memorable ones prohibiting From Elvis In Memphis from being a masterpiece.
Last time Elvis appeared on this list it prompted a 1 star review. That is not the case with From Elvis In Memphis. At all. Elvis sounds absolutely incredible on this record. His powerful vocal performances on “Only the Strong Survive”, “Long Black Limousine” and of course “In the Ghetto” blew me back. But even with Elvis delivering one great performance after the other, this wouldn’t have been nearly as good as it is if not for The Memphis Boys - ditching RCA Studios for this one was a genius decision. The band is just incredible and especially Gene Chrisman’s drumming left me stunned. I was ready to dismiss Elvis’ discography and stick to the hits after Elvis Is Back! God, was I in the wrong.
Great blend of country, soul, R&B and pop.
Country soul ! One or two tracks feel a bit filler ( less so than his soundtrack albums though ) …but when it hits it really hits - Suspicious Minds and of course the sublime In The Ghetto
Solid album, I’m a big fan of Elvis’ vocals. They can be really grand and bombast, but I think the nuance of emotion is still there. Just fun to listen to.
Love is a stranger and hearts are in danger. All through streets paved with gold, for true love travels on a gravel road!
The King alltså!
I'm not usually a fan of Elvis, but there were some great songs in here
Marcante para estabelecimento do intérprete do rock no final dos anos 60.
This was what you’d expect, I guess.
Not a huge Elvis fan , important though he undoubtedly was, but hard to argue with this record. Some of his best known and best songs, including Don't Cry Daddy, In The Ghetto and the brilliant Suspicious Minds.
Listened to on 12/7/22 4/5 Favorite song: suspicious minds I love Elvis and this album is stellar but didn’t contain as many hits
Very enjoyable music that felt like it had heart
The King! A pretty cool record. Suspicious minds the standout. A few skippable tracks IMO. A solid record nonetheless.
I wasn't expecting to like this. A lot of the other classic rock artists that have come up have been very hit or miss for me. But apparently I'm an Elvis fan. Groovy, smooth, cinematic, beautiful. I'm on board.
The bonus tracks take this from good to great. "Suspicious Minds" is the best Elvis song, don't @ me.
Some good songs on the album, but felt like Presley focused more on singing in this album and simplified his guitar playing. Still enjoyed the listen, but not my favorite Presley album.
Elvis is real good. Love the feels he gives out
Peak Elvis in my book. This comes right off the '68 comeback special and more importantly in my opinion, getting out of the RCA studio and going to the local up and coming American Sound Studio and backed by house band, 'the Memphis Boys' gave Elvis that second sound that (re)made his image after his Sun Records years. Man-oh-man if only he could have gotten out of Tom Parker's grip and produced this music, he could've had a third or fourth go-round and nailed them all. 4.5/5.
I liked it, but I really don't think Elvis is much of an albums artist. Like there's no glue holding the songs together, they feel so individual.
Latter era Elvis. A more mature, smoother voice, which is perfect for the more mature, Memphis soul songs. This may be my favourite incarnation of Elvis. What 1969 Elvis lacks in raw energy compared to his early rock-n-roll, he makes up for in depth and emotion. He also looks and sounds at his most iconic. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: In the Ghetto Date listened: 08/11/22
Voice= not as good as his debut record Emotions= cranked as high as the dial goes
Love Elvis and this has some classics on it
Bra soundtrack för att laga pesto pasta
Elvis 😍😍😍
Thanks Elvis:)
Banger
Very good. Dated, but good.
You really only need one Elvis album on the list, and this ain't it. I don't mind listening to the King, but this album is quite repetitive and droopy. And it sounds way behind the times for an album from 1969. Would have been cool to see Elvis steer into hippie psychedelic rock in his later career instead of going all "old man yells at cloud" country crooner. Suspicious Minds is a long time favourite song though, so I’m grading generously for that.
Classic Elvis
It's very impressive how modern an album from 1969 can sound. I'm not an Elvis fan, mainly because of his polemic use of black people's compositions getting all the credit as "the king," but I must assume this is historically important and an excellent album. Elvis's voice is incredible. "Power of My Love" and "Suspicious Minds" are incomparable classics.
this is the kind of music elvis' voice was perfect for! i mean, he excelled in a lot of areas musically, but there's something lovely about his voice and how well it suits southern soul/blues/country. he brings such a tender quality to these songs. i'm glad an album of elvis' made this list when it doesn't contain the sound he was most well known for.
My late father was a big fan of Elvis, so it was nice to be reminded of Dad today. I wonder what he would have said about this album. I knew two songs from this album. I’m not a big Elvis person and I think this was the first time I’d ever deliberately listened to him. Elvis is one of those cultural things that I feel like you don’t need to even have an opinion on. He’s his own thing entirely.
Classic elvis.
8,1 Classic songs Great lyrics Perfect Voice
Favourite song: Wearin’ That Loved On Look (what an opener) One for the Karaoke: Suspicious Minds, but I’d do the version that keeps looping and getting faster as everyone collectively loses their minds and I get sweatier with each passing second, with my hair becoming more and more unkempt. It would end with me dropping to the floor, exhausted and getting loads of women’s underwear and M&Ms lashed at me. One for the Car: I’m Movin’ On Made my drive home from work a bloody good treat.
Favourite Song - In The Ghetto One for Karaoke - Any Day Now One for a run - I’m Movin’ On In the Ghetto and Any Day Now are fucking 10’s God Save The King The only think that matters is Mr Pressssley
Tour de Force. Including soul elements to the original RnR nerve is a powerful addition, and then Elvis vocals here. Top!
Showcases his voice, good bad
A very enjoyable experience. This is Elvis on his best
Dated themes but some great classic Elvis.
Now seems like a good time to point out that Elvis didn't write songs, so while he may have been the greatest cover artist of all time, he was a cover artist nonetheless. At least the songs on this album weren't huge hits like some of Elvis's earlier albums. This album is pleasant enough. The production is great. It has a live feel while still sounding very clean. Elvis's voice was still holding up great at this point in his career, though it's a bit quiet on some of the songs. There aren't a lot of what I would consider to be standout tracks on this album, other than In The Ghetto, but all of the songs are good. It's a solid album to play in the background 4/5
Always enjoy the King!
Torn on this one. It's a 4 for sure, couldn't decide whether to give it a 5. It's missing a bit of Elvis' energetic vocals and I can't tell if that's because he was older and/or going for a more mature sound or because of his cold while recording the album. But the mature instrumental sound is pretty appealing - the Memphis Boys provide great backing (I especially love the bass work on this album). It's a real smooth and easy listen but another knock might be a lack of undeniable big tunes, with the exception of the closer In the Ghetto (a true classic). Maybe if the non-album singles like Suspicious Minds (my absolute favorite Elvis tune, hands-down), Don't Cry Daddy, or Kentucky Rain had actually been on this album I'd go even higher. Still a very good album.
Brilliantly nostalgic!
Not a huge Elvis fan, so I thought I was going to be underwhelmed. Thankfully, this was a great album. In particular, I enjoyed I'm Moving On, Suspicious Minds (obviously) and Kentucky Rain. 70/100gecs
Long black limo, after loving you, suspicious minds is good. Must admit this is the first time I've listened to an Elvis album start to finish. Never really considered myself a fan. Turns out I didn't even know Suspicious Minds was an Elvis song and I love it! Long Black Limo and After Loving You are both solid tracks as well. I wouldn't say I'm converted, but I'm definitely coming around on Elvis.
Wistful and almost melancholic takes from the iconic King. The one thing that drags it a bit is the overly-glossy production and orchestration that sometimes turns sweet to saccharine.
Great album. Wish there had been more thematic variety. I did get a bit of that from In The Ghetto and Don't Cry Daddy. The same sound kind of wore on me after a while and some the songs blended together a bit but it was an excellent performance.
Didn't expect to be in to this, was close to just not bothering as I've never really enjoyed Elvis, but I'm glad I did
Couple gems on there like suspicious minds, and overall great album. Some songs of his I’d never heard despite being a pretty big fan.
So I get it now. Probably the first time I have listened to an Elvis album, and then I listened to it three times on repeat. Aspects of Johnny Cash which I discovered in my early 30's So yep, getting added to the list
Sonzao
4. Voice in great nick and the songs he chose are mostly great. And, lets fuckin face it, any album with in the ghetto scores high...!
The arrangements and production is superb. The band sounds amazing. Very nearly a 5
Pretty clearly a late-career album, and one I have nothing bad to say about. Elvis-as-product is more interesting historically than musically, and that shows up a little bit on the recording. But he gets into the pocket on more tracks than not, which means the iconic voice, classic band work, and divine instrumental flourishes just beneath the surface.
Classic Elvis
Elvis. Can't deny that man's influence on music. A pleasant record with a few hits. Not my favourite genre, but still a time well spent.
4 stars for the band ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Elvis is the king of rock'n'roll, the best.
LP
I've got a raging boner for the king and fuck you if you can't stand him. Unless it's on racist grounds... In which case fair enough.
Classic Elvis and all of the songs were good but suspicious minds and the gentle on my mind cover were great
I can think of no other artist, with the possible exception of Dolly Parton, to sing songs that are so blatantly attempting to fabricate an emotional response in the listener and yet, despite this cheap trick and an initial roll of the eyes at the audacity, by the end of the track you’re bawling your eyes out. The man sure sold the songs. I know what you’re trying to do, Elvis. You’re not going to get me this time… oh damn why am I crying?
two of my favorite elvis songs on here - suspicious minds and in the ghetto - great album
This was good, solid. I enjoyed listening to it
Super quality! The strings and backing choir add so much magic to it
Almost perfect pop and love songs
I liked the crooning Elvis more than I expected. Lots of slower material compared to the Rock n Roll 50s period with plenty of ballads. It is a record you do have to be in the right mood to listen with enjoyment. I was lucky over the weekend I had time to listen to it three times. I never listened to any of the material on this so was quite interesting listening to Elvis completely blind. Favourite song was definitely Suspicious Minds with In The Ghetto and Long Black Limousine not far behind.
Elvis never wrote any of his songs but he definitely knew how to sing them.
Some soulful tunes here, if there's an Elvis period I like it might be this one.
Love me some Elvis and his buttery voice! Not my favorite set of Elvis songs (I prefer his earlier stuff) but I'd listen to The King sing the phonebook and be happy. Suspicious Minds is such an A+ song
Too many of these sound like a bad Elvis impersonator. But I still like it.
Enjoyed
Not usually fussed by Elvis but got to admit this is good stuff
THE KING!!
Ok Listen
A near perfect album. If all his records would have been this good!
You kind of forget Elvis's roots until you listen to his crooning, gospel-ey voice. It's almost as if God is wooing you himself. If Elvis had lived, he'd be alive. And almost 87 years old. Let that sink in. And who knows, he may living with Jimmy Hoffa somewhere. The album itself is uneven, at best. Mix of blues, gospel, sadness (yeah, it's a musical genre I just made up - some people might call it heartbreak music. blah). I'm moving on kicks the beat up a bit into the rock category. I liked his tempo on Any Day Now, which is slightly askew with the previous versions.... and then you get to In the Ghetto and Suspicious Minds... The tone of the album is sad, and the delivery makes you realize that great music isn't always upbeat.
It’s a great clean soulful Elvis. Everything here is good or really good… maybe with the exception of don’t cry daddy, which just is too sappy. The rest is strong and an enjoyable listen.
Hell yeah, this was some great country-funk from Elvis. Loved the backing band on this album. And there were some classics on it as well.
Never was an Elvis fan but I can recognize the importance of his talent
great
Great tracks
Elvis sounds great, essentially like a studio recording. The songs aren't for me, as they're not the most famous of his songs that I already know.
Standouts here are: • Only the Strong Survive • I’ll Hold You In My Heart • I’m Movin’ On • True Love Travels on a Gravel Road • Suspicious Minds
4/5
Elvis is another one I haven't given a focused listen to beyond what you get via general cultural osmosis but you know, I really dig this actually. Beyond the massive impact he had on rock music, these songs are just great to listen to.
Great album. Probably not super inclined to listen to it on it's own, but definitely good background music. I feel like there weren't really any standout songs until the end of the album. Loved Suspicious Minds (did not know this was an Elvis song) and Kentucky Rain.
Never heard this album before. Great performer, great album would listen to again.
Good ol' Elvis
Elvis embraces his country and soul side on this album. This album is very well produced but doesn’t quite capture the authenticity and energy of earlier soul albums. There are certainly some gems on this album and it is a great album by all accounts, but after the experimentation on the late 60s, this album sounds a bit behind
Favorite song: In the Ghetto
Way better than I thought it might be. A little bit cruise crooner in places, but also really beautiful in others
Some cracking bassline in this album. Some great guitar work here. Can't help but feel it would be better with a voice less Elvisy than Elvis, and let the music stand up on its own.
8/10 great performance
7/10. Sounds like Elvis
Elvis’s voice just rubs me in the wrong way, which is a shame because the production is so clean and the band sounds so good. 7/10
