Reviews (page 8 of 14)
I’m no Dummy to know this album is the Biscuit on the 1st place Pedestal. It’s a Fire. It Could Be Sweet, but these are Sour Times.
Love the vocals on this and it has a relaxing but rich feel. It was starting to feel a little long and then Glory Box dropped and I was feeling it again, strong finish. 8/10
Great album, ground breaking in the day and still a unique sound.
Album felt instrumentally strong and lyrically weak for the most part. Glory box was a beautiful exception
A very mysterious, almost erotic at times album. It feels like new noir hip hop. Portishead stand out quite a lot, as their music seems to have a very recognisable sound. There are times it feels like it shows its age though with things like the record scratch sound, which I personally am not a fan of.
I always enjoyed Portishead back in the 90s, but they were always a group that I’d forget about for years and then be reminded of, listen to them again, and then rinse and repeat. This is such a solid album, but it never sticks to me as something I constantly think about, but I never regret giving it another listen. I think it belongs on this list, but would probably fall short if I was putting together something similar.
Awesome
One of my college roommates had this album, and after listening today, I’m assuming it was just on repeat in our apartment because I know the whole thing pretty well. It’s chill and slow, but has a lot of beauty and emotion in its pace. Also feels different and cool for that time. I enjoyed it!
Very cool trippy vibe. Not what I usually listen to but it really hooked me and drew me in.
Mér fannst þetta bara æðislega skemmtileg plata til að hlusta á. Svo skemmtileg að mig langar helst til að halda matarboð svo hún geti fengið að spila í bakgrunninum. Hún myndi búa til rétta andrúmsloftið. Þessi fer aftur í spilun
Really good. Will definitely come back to this. Can’t stretch myself to a 5 right now but I could see myself regretting it.
Not my cup of tea but a sonically well made album and was entertaining enough to listen to. The eeriness really created like this soundscape that I was very impressed by. 7.5/10
8,5/10 Highlights Sour Times It's a Fire Glory Box
das andere Massive Attack? gefällig, eher wenig ereignis, aber doch auch bekanntes: Sour Time, It Could Be Sweet. ich mag trip hop als lounge-musik.
Good shit
this is what music from the future sounded like in the past
Solid
Memories...
great record. 4.5
what a gem
A classic one, and i totally love the sound, still boring sometimes
💖 wandering star 🗣️ 8️⃣
I really like this album. I had forgotten about all of the industrial sound that accompanies the ethereal lyrics and mood.
I own one Portishead album, but had never heard anything else by the band. I think I may like this one more — hard to say, it's been a while. There's a unique blend of haunting humanity and detached humanoid to this music, and though it started fading into the ether late into the album, there were so many moments that captivated and challenge me that it's a solid 4-star album in my book.
A classic. A friend of mine said that these guys found a new way to be depressed, which I've always loved. I gotta be in the mood for this, though, and yesterday was not that day. But, damn she's a good singer and their sound is great. But it falls just shy of being a 5 for me because it's so one-note.
Portishead always delivers a vibe. I listened while walking my dog on a beautiful mountain trail with waterfalls. We were alone and the woods were a bit dark. Until this listen I did not know Portishead was responsible for this entire genre---trip hop. I just knew I loved Beth Gibbons voice and the dreamy journey.
Klinkt als een Roald album wel nice

I really like the sound and the voice - but listening to the album in one sitting at the start of the day made me a person who was not fun to be around.
Portishead always feels claustrophobic to me. The songs are really good, but I can rarely stand that feeling. I wonder what it is?
Gloomy and mysterious, done right. Favourite track: Wandering Star
You made it. I enjoyed listening to electronic music. What surprises me is to call it trip-hop, since the example band of this style is the Massive Attack. I cannot see any similarities, this is much better.
Great instrumental, amazing lyrics. I wasn’t too much of a fan of the singing style but it’s just a personal preference
Different, and some very memorable songs
Love this album. Love her voice, the lyrics, the vibe.
I haven't listened to this album in many years, mostly because I remember it feeling a little dated, but listening to it, it holds up surprisingly well. There are 2 or three songs in the middle that feel a bit off, but if anything its a much better album then I remember. dark and moody, but still a decent groove.
Classic vibes album. 4/5
This is an interesting album. I like the singer's voice- it is very soothing to me. Plus the music is nice. 4/5
Decent electronic vibes
A great, chill, proto-lofi album.
Love the ambience, will need to listen to this one again. The pairing of the singer and electronic music fits perfectly.
This is a really interesting album, kind of spacy in places, rhythmic in others, very atmospheric. I like the vocals and guitar very much, particularly in the tone they have. It's not grabbing me instantly as being totally compelling, but it's close, if I had the option of a nine of ten, I'd do that, but without that option, I have to go four stars, but there's potential for five.
Got more into it as the album went on. Enjoyed wandering star. Would like to listen again.
I've listened to a bit of Portishead in the past and know that they have a place in the 90's fem-led rock zeitgeist, but never listend to a full album. This wass a treat. Dark, moody, lyrically heavy. I dug it.
This is a shockingly influential album. I've heard samples of many of these songs in hip hop, and the production definitely influenced certain rock and pop bands of the 2000s. While I like the album, and can't deny it's influence, some of the songs feel one piece away from amazing. Best Songs: Sour Times, Wandering Star, It's A Fire, Glory Box Worst Songs: Pedestal

it was pretty chill, i would listen again!! 😁😁
This album or maybe the other one was one of the first times I realized as a young lad that you could throw some music on and set the right kind of mood for you and young lady so cool. Other than that amazing three albums amazing band would love to see them live on the musical bucket list of concerts.
Classic album. While I do appreciate it, there is something about it that limits it to getting into the upper echelon of elite albums for me. 4.5/5
Awesome samples, great vocals by Beth, and loved the dark moody feel of it. A solid trip-hop album to listen to and great for those getting into different types of genres. Would recommend no cap. Best - Sour Times, Wandering Star, Numb, Roads, Biscuit, and Glory Box No bad songs 3.75/5
While American rappers developed the techniques of sampling, British electronic musicians began using similar techniques to create a completely different sound, and hence trip hop was born. Portishead didn’t invent trip hop, but what they did on Dummy with completely non-digital sampling was revolutionary and paved the way for plunderphonics and mashup music. While other early trip hop artists like Massive Attack and Tricky sound dated to me, I’ll never fail to enjoy early Portishead. Part of being an electronic music act who records non-digitally in the studio means they sound fantastic live. Check out Portishead’s Roseland NYC from 1998 for my all-time favorite recordings of many of these tracks.
This is my first time listening to Portishead. From what I can gather, they're considered an influential group in the trip-hop genre, alongside the likes of Tricky whom I’ve heard before on this journey. That genre is pretty much the vibe we get with this album. Beth Gibbons's sweet and sultry vocal delivery melts over the slow yet well-accented percussion and spare accompaniment from various live instruments, samples, and electronic programming. In a way, the album is cinematic in its overall presentation. Pair that with yearning lyrics, and the experience takes on a whole melancholic tone. I enjoyed this album overall, and I can see how later acts were inspired by it. There's a sense of it being simple but effective.
i just think i like trip hop
I feel like in most normal situations I'd give this album a 3. Like, as much as I can recognize in the moment, while it's playing, all the stuff that makes it great—the production, the sampling, the vocal style, the mood—hours later, I can't remember a second of it. And that goes for most all trip hop, really. Unless it's in direct comparison to much more boring trip hop (see: MAXINQUAYE), I'm not sure what it can really do to bump up an extra star. Well, this thing found a way: a **bitchen guitar solo on the last track**. Seriously, I'unno who decide it should rip so hard, but if I ain't happy! Absolutely, it's enough to earn that extra star from me. And maybe more trip hop albums should have solos like that, I'unno. Massive Attack, it wouldn't hurt to try. You too, Tricky.
This group being so good right from the gate, plus the fact that Trip Hop is such an easygoing genre elevate this album pretty high in my book.
I’m right on a 4. I thought it was good – I think the biggest problem this album has is entirely in managing its pacing and its tone. The sort of ratio between faster songs and slower songs is a bit skewed, and I don’t think the album flows as nicely and as smoothly as it could. It still manages to pace itself well, don’t get me wrong, but as an album experience, it does feel a little more front loaded with the faster stuff. That brings me to the point of its tone; I think a few songs here kinda touch around the same general soundscape and topics a bit too often, especially by the end, which lines up around the point where the sound design starts to kind of lose that luster, on account of the pacing of the album. With that said, this is a really nice album in spite of all that; I think the vocals are really nice throughout, finding a super good balance between soft and moody and a bit more excitable and engaged throughout each point of the songs. I think the sound design and production, for 1994, is definitely ahead of schedule – a few songs on here feel like they could’ve dropped in 2018 or 2019 and not missed a beat. Lyrically, I thought it was a little abstract, but the focus here is on the mood and the soundscapes, so I’m not gonna be a stickler about it, because they nailed the mood and the soundscapes on every track, whether I was feeling the track or not. I don’t think there’s a single bad song here, just different songs that you have to be in the right mood for in order for them to really hit. Someone’s least favorite on here could be someone else’s favorite, and that’s a testament to the variety of the tracks throughout the album, and the sustained quality it has. It doesn’t quite do enough for my tastes to get up to a 5, but it’s absolutely no less than a 4.
4.5- pretty chill and amazing bass tone. Some of it sounds like a ps1 game
This album is awesome I love it, give me a reasonnnnn to love you
Elska þessa plötu og Bristol sándið. Mikil áhrif á síðari tíma bönd og söngkonur.
Another great Trip Hop album! The vocals are really something special in this album. Such a chill sexy vibe through this album. I still remember when I first heard the live version of "Strangers" on Youtube. Such a great version and I think their live album warrants a mention on this list as well. The tracks hold a high standard but a few really stands out as something special. For me some of those are "Strangers", "Roads" and of course "Glory Box" Just a very strong album that everyone should listen to as it is pretty unique I think. Very strong 4.
fun !
This is the first one I've had to listen to twice so far. This is an incredibly well done album with a lot going for it. This is almost certainly the inspiration for a lot of other music that I like.
Heard artist for the first time. Interesting
#225. Interesting. I know Ethan have this listed as electronic, but that is not accurate, although it is hard to categorize. Dummy is a lot of everything - Mellow jazz, soulful vocals that pull you into the realm. Pretty cool. One of those Surprise Finds. Will listen again for sure
Really enjoyed a few of these. Glory Box and Roads were definitely highlights. There were a few fairly dull songs inbetween though
Very good - Beth Gibbons voice is amazing
Moody, dark, and beautiful. Can’t believe I’ve never heard of or listened to Portishead before.
A very good album, it really brings back vivid memories of the 90's. Has a very sparse and raw feel to it, which makes a pleasant change from the over-produced crap which seems to have taken over everywhere.
Good mellow listen.
Nota: 8/10 28/05/2024
The mid-90's Bristol scene. Massive Attack were the sound of the night out, and Portishead were the sound of the lonely 3am walk home down the back alleys. I used to like this lot as a bit of an antidote to the guitar music that was appearing around this time. They always gave me the impression of being clever muso types, not a bad thing. Haven't listened to them in years, will I again after this? Definitely the 2 class singles, the rest? When I'm in the mood for a chill out vibe maybe. A low 4
7.5/10
Two legendary songs, but it's no wonder I've never heard any other track from this album. It's quite disappointing really, with how high the bar was set with Roads and Glorybox. Also compared to other artists and band from Bristol, it's just a little bit underwhelming. Anyway, after this festival of venting, I have to admit, I'm not able to give it anything lower than 4 stars. Roads are just too good, man.
A bit slow at times, but a whole vibe nonetheless!
Have on vinyl - really interesting album, not like the music I usually like but very consistent and enjoyable
Beautiful.
Some interesting songs.
Very good sound. Couple of songs really grabbed me
Nice.
Beautiful and haunting. Hadn’t listened to any other tunes than Roads in a very long time. Second trip hop album, nice!
gosh, that tori amos kate bush alanis sinead voice was huge in the early nineties. absolutely adore a couple of these songs, and therefore slightly disappointed with the album as a whole. still dope though
On the one hand, if I get another electronic music recommendation, I'm gonna scream. On the other, goddamn this is good.
Eerie, dark, and exceptional. Only reason it's not 5 stars is because it can a bit repetitive.
im always a little surprised by this albums critical acclaim. its enjoyable but it sounds a bit too 90s to be amazing to me. slow dreary trip hop gets a bit dull after a bit but this is considered one of the best for a reason, it doesnt really get boring throughout. 7/10
Good lofi with some interesting moments.
I’ve heard a lot of great things about this album but never actually listened. This is really good—moody, dark, mysterious.
I’ve seen Portishead around for a long time, but never gave them a chance because of the album artwork and name. If the band name album name and album artwork better reflected the music I would’ve bought this record along time ago!
the backbone of my ‘i’m a woman <3’ playlist. i love u dummy portishead ❤️
chill
I’ve never really got into Portishead before, but being forced into it, I can definitely see it’s merits. The production is really clean and the mood of the album is great. Missing perhaps some highlights beyond Glory Box. Fave Tracks: Glory Box, other songs too but I didn’t see the track list whilst listening 4/5
Thoughts before listening: This album gets talked about A LOT, but this will be a first listen for me. I believe Portishead is considered trip hop with ethereal female vocals...this is typically the type of music I respect more than enjoy which is probably why I have never sought this album out despite the acclaim. Review: This is not the type of music I would usually listen to, but this is good. I definitely remember \"Sour Times\" being a big deal on the college and alternative radio stations I listened to in the 90s, so it is nice to hear a familiar song. These guys get a ton of style points and their sound is very interesting. Lots of cool sounds mixed into what amounts to moody, slow burn, jazzy music with emotive female vocals. My favorite song is \"Glory Box\". 4-stars
Smokey ennui. Very enjoyable to listen to.
Gloomy and moody, just what I like. 4/5
First track is dope. Very trippy sound and the singers voice fits the sound perfectly. Through the halfway point of the album. Enjoy the sound. It’s very unique and mysterious. Some of the tracks feel like they’d do well in a James Bond movie. I would like a little more variety though. Some of the songs don’t vary enough to keep my attention. Will continue listening and change rating accordingly.
o k 4 / 5
Favourite song - Glory box
An awesome, jazzy fusion. Really enjoyed it, roads is absolutely incredible
4/5 An album I've (mostly) listened to before. It's a great album. I've heard some people call it dated but on re-listen, I don't agree with that statement at all. Though it's not an album I'd necessarily put on and listen in one sitting reguarly, it's very sultry (if you don't pay attention to the lyrics anyway) and trance-like. My favourite songs are: Mysterons, It Could Be Sweet, It's A Fire, Glory Box, Road.
4. Some of the most attention-grabbing sequencing I've heard from an album. Voice reminiscent of Jeff Buckley - vibrato when pushing it Simple yet iconic cover art I'm stunned at the level of depth achieved in the mix of these songs with relatively little happening on an instrumental basis "Strangers" resampling itself was so fucking cool. I love the application of scene changes in this song; from completely jarring cut-outs, to vocal tone shifting from warm / saturated, to cold and sleek. Same goes for the sonic palette used for the drums throughout the album. Plenty of interesting contrast.
GREAT! Amazing atmosphere
Really cool interesting sound, the vocalist has a wonderful voice. Some tracks really did sound like something out of a spy movie.
A wonderful union of old and new. Soulful yet haunting. I do think the 3rd album is even better but this was a step in a direction many seem to have tried to follow but Portishead feel like they transcend gimmicky genre aping.
3.6 sexy sexy album, bit samey sometimes but sexy nonetheless. fave songs: sour times, strangers, glory box
First few tracks were epic but then it could be sweet was fucking dog shit. After that I started to get into the weird moodiness of it even if it did feel a bit repetitive. Glory box was great obviously and ended the album well BUT HOLY SHIT THE FAKE RECORD CLICKS WERE SO FUCKING ANNOYING. Mixed bag overall.
1994 triphop got me actin unwise. I love the samples used, they're not overwhelming but add a cool vibe to the songs.
I have been putting off listening to Portishead for the first time. I'm not sure why, but I think I wanted to be in the right frame of mind and not dismiss them. Fortunately, that's exactly where I was because godDAMN this is some good stuff. It's just oozing sultry and lounge singer, and yet putting it firmly into a more modern-esque (I say modern-esque because it is 30 years old) setting than the singers from the 20s and 30s. You wouldn't really think the two styled would cross over so well, but they do in every single song on this album. Kinda wish "Glory Box" didn't fade out, but that's being picky. Wow, so glad I took the time to sit down and listen to this. Really, really good stuff.
Now these guys did trip hop or the Bristol sound right. I've been pretty lukewarm on the rest of this genre, but this album feels markedly better. I'm not entirely sure why. Maybe it's Beth Gibbons' vocals - her voice tugs at you. A perfect match for the spacey sounds. Maybe it's that they also used some of their own instrumentation and that mixed with the sampling gives it something extra. Listen to the end of Mysterious or the start of Sour Times - there's some extra percussion or rattling or something that really works. Some other particularly good songs include Wandering Star and Glory Box.
Joya. Nada suena como Portishead.
Listened to glory box a ton and listened to this album in the past. It’s solid and she has a beautiful voice.
Really liked this. Chill, Dark, moody, cinematic, downtempo with cool hip hop beats. Singer has a unique voice. Some of the songs almost had a feel of a "less-soul, more-electronic Fugees". I had previously saved Sour Times and recognized Glory Box and now saved that too.
4-
First time hearing Portishead and they are so chill, I’m pretty sure I’ll be revisiting this album again in the near future.
I’ve just recently been put into Portishead. I really love music like this. Bands like Massive Attack and Thievery Corporation always hit different. Favorite song was Glory Box. Added to my Spotify playlist.
Really enjoyed it
Really enjoyed Sour Times and Mysterons. Cover artwork isn't appealing, but the music speaks for itself.
Really loved this. Never heard the whole thing. Bond Trip Hop, yes. Dark Alley UK vibes, yes. Great vocals and textures, yes.
It Could Be Sweet Wandering Star Numb Roads Pedestal Pretty great album I’d say. But definitely has its time and place. Productivity music for sure.
I've apparently listened to this once before, but I have no recollection of it. It was a very cool vibe for a morning depressed in work though. Highly enjoyed.
Finally
Sehr melancholisch. Habe die Platte offenbar in der richtigen Situation gehört, gefällt mir wider Erwarten doch recht gut! 4/5
Soort duister album. FAVO: Wandering Star, Numb, Pedestal
Really great vibe. There's better instrumental work than I would've expected with this sort of sound. They could've laid back more on the vocals to drive but some nice string work and synth blending. I liked this one. Cool listen. Could easily see a relisten.
Pleasant arrangements. The music seems a little simple or thin. Great voice. It's grown on me with each listen, but I still wish the production was a bit better. Maybe incorporate a real bass player.
Shit bangs, sour times, wandering star, glory box, extra bangs, 4.5
I’d rate this 3.6 stars. The beats and sounds are great, just wished some of the lyrics and singing hit a little harder. I gave this a couple of listens and might check out other songs of theirs.
Actually Good
FIrreeeee
Very good and like emotional
Sexxy
Great album. This one brought Trip-Hop to the mainstream. I liked the "Live at Roseland" album better, though.
Lofi 90s
Electronic ambient music? Nice, but not as great as everyone makes this out to be. 3.5/5
Great album!
Really cool
Angsty!
Good album.
7/10 Sour time and Glory box stand out as really good. The rest is relaxing trip-hop that I'm happy to listen to, but no chills or jaw drops. elevator music for a really cool elevator. 3-4-2024
Really liked it.
Very interesting. It could be just a little bit more, in some places I missed a little something, but all in all I liked it. This eerie voice on top of something similar to hip-hop beats... I really kinda liked it
4/5
Classic - Sour times, wandering star, glory box soundtrack to youth - actually had this album on CD and played it constantly
This was a pretty good album for non obtrusive background music. I didn't find the songs particularly compelling to listen to or something that gets my amped up, just something to have on when you want to concentrate on something and filter out other noise. I liked her voice and the music was pretty good.
OG banger
I'm sitting in a jazz club in 1966 with cigarette smoke filling the air and Beth Gibbons is making every person in the building fall in love with her. This album feels much more cohesive than 'Third" and really drew me in. "Roads" and "Glory Box" are incredibly smooth. I give it a 4/5.
A bit one-note, but still very cool. 3.5/5
Fedt album!
Had it been rainy when I listened, I'd give it five stars
Chill vibes, kind of dark. Jazzy but with a bit of hip hop beats 7,5
Great album. Very well balanced between underground trip hop, but also appealing to the mainstream. Album definitely stands the test of time.
A rare 4 star All-timer? While I say that I love this album, it seems that I love the first several tracks. All of the tracks are good, but I rarely make it to the last few songs because I am ready to move on before I get there. Still, aces though.
Heck yeah I know this one. Great sound, album that hasn't aged. Timeless. Definite 4
Meh
Very good
very dark and mysterious
The second album I encountered here at 1001 ATHBYD. The first one being "Third" was good but I like this better. Intriguing songs ...
When in the mood, I can listen to this endlessly.
Nasowas.
So smooth and gentle! A mood unto itself.
Chill album, wonderful to sit back and close your eyes.
listened to again effortlessly cool, darkly cinematic
Even though this came out several years before I went to college, I listened to this album in college, so it takes me back to those days.
I love a good triphop album and this album is so good. The music and the vocals work so well together it gives the album an almost ethereal sound. Love it.
It's a Fire. orgle schön. het mi huere inezoche de song. geilo. roads. seehr schön kenni glaub? huere schön.
Very cool to listen to, relevant lyrics, nice and easy listening
Really cool and chill and funky
I love Portishead though I feel the famous debut is the weakest of the 3 albums. Moody electronica with a torch singer.
This is a pretty solid album. Had not listened to it for awhile.
I felt like i was the coolest kid at y2k
I really liked the mood of this album. The singers voice really brought the melancholy feel and mood of this album to the forefront. While fairly simple and not too varying in style, the album was easy to listen to and culminated in Glory Box. I can see myself coming back to this album if I'm in the right mood.
Glory Box ; talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique, completely not ever been done before, unafraid to reference or not reference, put it in a blender, shit on it, vomit on it, eat it, give birth to it J'aime trop la chanson, et j'avais oublié que Olivia Colman l'avait chantée aussi ! Que demande le peuple ??
Viel los, auch mal überraschend. Musik und Gesang toll. Macht mit Kopfhörern echt Spaß.
Fantastic Album! Trip Hop Finest.
Discazo
8/10
Love this album, so moody!
Great album. Hypnotic and different music that gave a new breath to the musical scene
Never heard of this artist, but her music has an almost sound to Sade’s music. Loved it.
This is an absolute STUNNING album. Each song has some interesting layer to it and Beth Gibbons has such A haunting voice
Wow! How did I miss this? I was already out of the retail music industry when this came out in 1994. I’ve got Glory Box on repeat now. Moody, beat driven tunes some more accessible than others. I’m glad it came up in my feed!
Not the kind of music I would often listen to, but this album rewards a close and relaxed listen. Being tonally dark, 'Dummy' utilizes deep lyrics and cabaret vocal delivery and is full of jazzy samples, funky scratches and catchy melodic hooks. The highlight of the for me is Glory's Box, complete with cinematic strings and Hendrix-y guitar bends. A solid debut album and an interesting listen for electronica fans.
Very chill. Almost lounge-style music. For some reason I had always assumed they were metal. Pleasantly surprised.
Finally an album I'm not familiar with. I've heard some Portished before including Roads from this one but the rest of the album was new to me. I liked it, certainly more than a lot of trip hop I've heard. Will probably be coming back to it in the future
Very lovely. If I still worked in an office and played music on a speaker, this would be added to the rotation. It was enjoyable but not so distracting that I couldn’t work while listening. I recognized Sour Times (probably because Joe has played it at home).
Quite a good album from the early days of trip-hop. Consistently good songs from start to finish.
Not at all what I expected! Very moody, atmospheric sound with poetic lyrics and themes, driven by understated sound. Very enjoyable and would listen to again with more intent.
Very nearly a 5!!
It’s really great!!
Down tempo funky. Great vocals
Very Good
Listened Before? Y Depending on your view, this may be one of the best albums of the 90s. It's really solid. For me, it drips with nostalgia as well. Love her voice and the style. This one will stay in my library. Added to Library? Y Songs added to Playlist: Sour Times, Glory Box
Cool sounding album Really liked the female vocalist Eerie, psychedelic vibe Only managed to listen to the A side but would defo like to finish
I found it dragged a little bit but I liked the songs at the end more than the songs at the start
I liked, portishead coming in with the supreme vibes. Did not emotionally touch me much so it gets a 4.
Men hade aldrig kunnat placera låten.
Damn good album.
Decent. Enjoyed that.
very cool, i dig it a lot
Apart from knowing where Portishead is in the UK and a memory of being stuck on the M5 for 6 hours staring at the exit sign to there, the band is a mystery. Happily this interaction was more positive. Although a little samey the mix is strong and engaging. The vocals fit the style beautifully. Some of the frills seemed an unnecessary embellishment. Or maybe likened to things that distract ones attention from the monotony of being stationary in traffic,
honestly really enjoyed this album despite it not totally being my style, just really nice vibes. top fave was ROADS !! also loved sour times 4/5 absolutely made me feel like i should be getting high on an old couch in a cloudy basement in 1995 lol. will def keep on the rotation for chill times
Enjoyed very much. Wouldn't download but would definitely listen to again if ever working on a painting/design/
Head go dummy
That shit was bangin
Nice, spheric and something special.
Ja klonk lekker trippy, coole beats
Pretty great
Really cool music for when you want to set a specific Background Vibe. Not something I’d sit and listen to for its own sake but absolutely something I’d put on for studying, working, or hanging out.
The trip-hop genre isn't often my thing, but this album has grown on me quite a bit. It's great background music.
I know this album but haven't heard it in a long while. I put off listening to this one for a bit. I never felt I was in the mood and didn't want to blow it off. Tonight I gave it a shot and Mysterons pulled me right in. Amazing opening track. But then I drifted out of it for a while. Numb and Roads pulled me back in and I totally enjoyed the album from that point on. This is real good stuff. Not my favorite kind of stuff, but real good nonetheless.
Super chill and I will likely listen again
Never liked Portishead or Trip Hop all that much but it so clearly belongs on this list for its artistic value that I'll still give it a 4, even more so since it's the only album on the list.
Love portishead
This has objectively good songs with objectively better instrumentals
THIS ALBUM IS GREAT OMG AHHHHH 9.0/10
Easy listening 👍🏼😎
as bran said, great cooking music. jazzy with a little bit of sauce on top
I like Portishead a lot. It’s not always my go to and some of the songs sort of disappear into the background, but when they hit, they hit. Glory box is always a favorite
I grew up with my mum playing this album to me so a bit biased. Some proper tunes on here. Love the processing on the drums, makes it sound like its not a real drummer. The muted tones and depressing lyrics hits hard
3.5 Enjoyable album, tracks melded together a bit but overall very enjoyable if you want something of a lower pace and bit of a melancholy vibe. Wandering Star the standout.
Glory Box
Undeniably a vibe
That's pretty dope!
cool cool
I want to give this a 4-4.25. I think the front half of the album was good but much better liked the latter half. The song Strangers starts off with Japanese traditional music which was cool. A lot of the record has interesting production and the overall ambiance is dark, overwhelming, moody, and sometimes even hurt emotions. Definitely an interesting jazzy, trip hop, moody album
Wow, instant Portishead fan. I learned today that I have been a fan of trip hop for a while, I just did not know that was what this style of music is called. I had not heard this record before and found all the tracks to be delightful.
It's an album of peaks and valleys, I think. Great start, meanders in the middle, and ends with the two best tracks on the album. I might be biased but that makes a solid 7/10 to me.
Excellent... subtle vibes.
Have never heard of this band before, but did actually like the album as a whole.
Oh, this is really cool. How have I never heard it before? I’ve heard of Portishead, but I don’t think I’ve ever listened to them before this - I think I was assuming they were kind of a generic pop band. I’d like to hear more. Really feels like it fits in with the recent “lo-fi hiphop” trend. (I enjoyed the album as a whole, but didn’t note any highlights - at least on this first listen - because it did feel a bit homogenous.)
Love this, so moody and delicious. A few songs felt a bit repetitive as the style doesn't change a lot throughout the whole album but majority were standouts.
Enjoyed
Not really my exact vibe but some of it really fucked Was enjoyable and pretty good background music, beats were funky but didn’t love the vocals
Atmospheric. Smooth. Sometimes a little bit haunting, other times somewhat peppier. An album that takes you on a journey. A slow burner with 5-star potential, but it's too chill to feel that connection after just a few listens. One to be listening to again.
Trippy and a good vibe. I don't know if I'll revisit but I enjoyed the ride.
Spooky, soft rock, awsome voice👍
edge loves them so i tried....
Strangers е хубава. It Could Be Sweet
I really liked Roads, Mysterons. Nice and chill. Glory Box is fantastic.
This grew on me. I particularly liked It Could Be Sweet, Roads and Glory Box.
A nice album. Felt like an hour of relaxing spy movie soundtrack
A melting pot of genres go into this classic trip-hop album
Is this really our first from Portishead? Maybe I'm getting them confused with Massive Attack. Honestly a lot to love on here, some songs I definitely recognize too. This one's in an interesting genre sweet spot, it's alternative/electronic with just a pinch of hip hop instrumentation or vibe to it. I dig it, very cool album. Favorite tracks: Glory Box, Sour Times, Strangers, Wandering Star. Album art: Blue. More specifically, blue frame flanking a lady in blue who appears to be on stage. Is she the singer? 4/5
spooky vibe :)
Sour Times is an undeniable banger. The album in general is stronger on the front half than the back half. The last track does make up for that some, though. Overall really good!
Pretty cool. It was a lot slower and more chilled than most of the stuff I listen to which was nice. Maybe a little bit alternative though
Classic album, so moody and sensual
stand out track - It's a Fire
Sounds futuristic in 2023
I like this one. Shivering and anxious but abundantly melodic. Slow in places but not unbearably so
Pretty solid. I was drawn in pretty early on and like it the whole way through. I don't think repeat listens would be quite as good, and there wasn't really any single worthy bops, for me.
Very unique singing, enjoyable and intriguing but you have to be in the mood for something non conventional
The first song starts with a hip hop beat + a theramin.
very enjoyable would listen again
The tight driven production paired with the beautiful mournful melody is just magical. I'm so sad I missed them in the 90's. Will listen again
Some standout tracks, I particularly like glory box. I won’t be coming back to it very frequently though, it just didn’t enthral me
Dark & moody
It was like lady Radiohead. Fun and entertaining.
So cool. Like massive attack but more interesting.
Classic, still
Good album, very dark and eerie soundscapes. It definitely feels like it was made for a horror movie set in the deep south.
Gave my Buffy Vampire Slayer Bronze Vibes
4/5
Fantastic trip down 90s memory lane. Beth Gibbons' voice is gorgeous & the band essentially created the trip hop genre.
Really good! Easy to listen to. I really enjoy the lead singer’s vocals. I didn’t come away with a favorite song, but there weren’t any that I disliked.
Worth a second listen
vrmt chill
-never heard of this band or album which are Always my favorite -SO FAR VERY INTERESTING -i do love the mysterious vibes in sour times -this album is so lovely and mystical i was not expecting this -the vocals are really pretty -THATS WHERE THIS SONG IS FROM? GLORYBOX? -never would have EVER thought thats where this song is from omg -this song is getting a 4 from me mostly because of that last song getting a green check from me -but also because i enjoyed listening to this album
If you're of a certain age, then this album was *everywhere*. Perfect to put on the 3 disc CD changer if you'd invited an attractive lady over "for dinner" on a 3rd date.
I liked a little more than half the songs. That's pretty decent stats for most albums. I'd listen to this again.
I dig the lowkey electronic hip hop vibes. The vocals are a perfect compliment. I liked it but didn't LOVE it.
p726. 1994. 4.5 stars. Strange, surreal and bitter-sweet aural experience, like the soundtrack from a lost David Lynch adaption of Alice in Wonderland. Just when you think it's getting too pretentious it comes up like a stone cold classic like Sour Times or Glory box. And Beth Gibbon's voice is a thing of beauty.
Album is a vibe. Not a lot of bangers expect glorybox. Her vocals are great beats are nice but it’s not a truly great album.Nothing touches me deeply.
a classic, but started to sound too same-y after a short while
Filled with dark, spooky beats accompanied by haunting vocals, Dummy is quite an experience and one that offers itself to multiple relistens.
I thought I'd only know 1 or 2 songs off this album. Turns out I knew about half of the album. Must be a classic then. I like it. Favorite song: roads.
Very cool
I always loved the late night menace of this album. The sampled beats mixed with mysterious female vocals and eerie keyboards evokes the feeling of a modern day film noir. The songs do sound a little similar at times, I couldn’t really name a track specifically, but there are always little nuggets I pick up on every time I listen to this. It may not be a classic album, but it’s definitely a fascinating album.
4.5 Didn't expect this complexity in this album and I really loved it
Now this one was good. Chill and beautiful I saved multiple songs and the album as a whole. That's says alot. I'll be happy to hear these songs popping up on shuffle. I've always heard I should try these guys but never got around to it. Glad this made me. Worth it all around. I love her voice. 4*
Not every track is Glory Box, but ai enjoyed it.
Enjoyable
dark, atmospheric, interesting. sounds like you're in a cave. amazing beats.
Great stuff here
good ass album the outro is a top tier song!!! Really ejoyed it
Nice mix of old and new styles, very eclectic
I really like Portishead - great soundscapes.
good album cool trip hop I likey
Need to keep these catch-ups brief, but this is the good shit. A-
Ethereal, almost melancholic, but with the trip hop beats it’s something you can listen to while chilling, driving, cleaning…all the things! I heard Portishead for first time on Big Shiny Tunes, and liked it, and still like it over 20 years later! Listen again: yes Purchase for my collection: yes Favourite Song: Mysterons
enjoyed this one quite a bit, very easy listening. favorite song: roads
The powerful voice of Beth Gibbons anchors this essential triphop album. Downbeat, but not in a way that leaves one drained.
4/5 Best: Roads Worst: Biscuit
