Reviews (page 5 of 12)

Really good so far. Badlands started off a little cheesy but the album picked up really quickly. The piano and the soulful riffs on Something in the Night slap hard. It just keeps hitting this is a really good album.

My third Springsteen album on the list, and it probably lies somewhere between the other two (Born To Run and Born In The USA) in terms of how much I enjoyed it. Although the tracks weren't as well known, to me at least, they were really well-crafted.

4 - didn’t realize who it was till a little bit in, this album has some good tracks with the beat and energy but lacks consistency and the lyrics to take it all the way

Bruce springsteen the best thing to come out of the us

You can always count on The Boss to give us some well-written, well-played tunes. Can't go wrong with some Springsteen in your ears!

Pretty good.

If the energy of albums like Born to Run or Born in the USA (or god forbid the weirdness of The Rising) hook you on the idea of an absurd sense of patriotism, Darkness on the Edge of town feels more like a gritty reminder of what that ‘dream’ really entails. In a way an album feels more comforting, I feel as though instead of opting towards the ‘eat your vitamins and say your prayers like a good hulkamaniac’ this comes from a much more understanding mindset of knowing that the road ahead in life will be tough but worthwhile in the end. While I can agree Springsteens most enjoyable songs come from his more poppier albums, I wouldn’t have minded if he had a few more albums that were congruent with this one.

I have never cared for Bruce Springsteen. At a surface level he is turboburger tribute to da troops patriot slop music, and you would be forgiven for thinking that if your only knowledge of his music came from his lead paint eating geriatric fan base and the three or so hits that still get a run on the radio, or if the only full album of his you had listened to was his absolute shithouse 9/11 tribute album. The deeper cuts from this are quite enjoyable, and though I can’t say I’m a big fan of the boss’ vocal stylings, his band is stellar. An incredibly easy listen from an artist I dreaded being assigned.

Damn, lowest common denominator Tom Waits goes crazy 8/10

A pleasant surprise - is The Boss kind of… emo? Reminded me of the gaslight anthem a bit, and the whole ‘gotta get out of this town’ mentality is familiar and enjoyable. Not bad.

Quintessential Springsteen. Workingman blues with steady beats (thx Max), blaring sax solos, and lovely piano ballads.

i said it before and I'll say it again- get your fucking asses up and YEARN no one wants to yearn like this anymore!! this was another great album from Bruce, though a much darker tone than Born to Run (as the title would suggest lol). i did think some of the songs dragged a bit on the second half of the album but overall the songwriting, lyrics, production, and emotion was all top notch. this is another album that will be going into the rotation for sure.

81% Best: Adam Raised a Cain; The Promised Land; Prove It All Night; Darkness On the Edge of Town Must-Hear? Sure

Great record. Even though Bruce became a USA hating liberal d-bag his music is iconic.

Great. The promised land song starred

Not my favourite of his but I still love The Boss

Badlands

This might be Springsteen's most consistent work with every song on here being good or better.

Welp, I guess I like Bruce Springsteen? Mildly surprised. Favorites: Promised Land, Streets Of Fire, Prove It All Night.

Favorite tracks: Badlands, Streets of Fire, Prove It All Night, Darkness on the Edge of Town. This is the third Springsteen album I've gotten so far, and to be honest I might be inflating this rating because I think I under-rated the previous two. I enjoy most of the songs here, but the ones I like, I *really* like. Guys, I think I like The Boss. 4 stars.

Dark, interesting Probably could be a 5/5 if I gave it enough listens, but on first pass a solid 4

Pretty nice music with some sounding a little bit like Meatloaf.

Pretty good stuff. I liked it.

Liked this more than I thought I would, great piano and drums, makes you feel very nostalgic

Another win for socks in sandals (and grilling burgers). Favorite track: Streets on Fire

Very good album some bangers and some nice ballads as well. Classic Bruce

Guess I'm a bigger Bruce Springsteen fan than I thought. This album is really cool

Good stuff. All solid songs. Some great ones.

Bangerrrrrrrrr

Great album, but Bruce Springteen is too american for me

Solid album

I didn’t expect to like any of this, but this was pretty good. Not too much of anything. Really balanced and authentic. Definitive Bruce.

A good 15 years since I heard this, and half of it felt new to me so perhaps I didnt listen to it very well or as much as i thought! Either way, Ive overlooked this in the past as it’s really very good. Aye it can at times drift into samey category, but luckily Springsteen does this very well. Streets of Fire, Badlands, Adam Raised a Cain my top 3, but it’s all pretty spot on. He knows what he’s doing and he does it well

Haven't listened to much Bruce either, a bit like Dylan I think the good songs are a genre in their own right, copied by loads of stuff I like, and the other songs are a bit bland and look bad compared to the others. More good than bad here I'd say. Darkness on the edge of town was probably the best, doesn't look like this album has that many hits? I feel Japandroids really lean in to Springsteen on occasions so I'm thankful for that. 3.5.

Liked it start to finish.

The boss. Was surprised by this one . I liked it more than I thought I would

Classic Springsteen sort of stuff

Bruuuuuuce!

Really good album - production is kinda weird in spots, but it doesn't really take away from the overall presentation. I know Springsteen isn't everyone's thing, but I'd say this might be his best full band album. All the good stuff distilled down into a peak songwriting/music experience. Fun fact - Bob Dylan ape'd Springsteen's style on the Traveling Wilbury's song "Tweeter and the Monkey Man." (well worth checking out, even if you don't like Bruce - it seems like a tribute, but it could very well be a take down depending on what you think of Darkness in general.)

This massive album is solid. It is so diverse the bigness isn't a detriment.

As far as I'm concerned, the heart of the Boss is Born in the USA album. Many Boss fans disagree, but I'll admit that I'm not as serious a fan as many. Generally, I don't have patience to listen to his album from. beginning to end. Except Born. Same with this album. I know this album was made a few years before Born, but if a song is too much like a track on Born, then it is lesser. If a song on this track is innovative and catchy in a way the ones on Born aren't then I want to add it to my playlist. But as a whole I think this album is quite good, but not as good as Born 4/5

Favourite track could be Badlands or Candy's Room but the piano in Something in the Night maybe just edges that one for me.

one of the great early Bruce albums.. not upto the calibre of Born To Run but still classic Bruce

Lovely. Adam Raised a Cain got me hooked. I see why he's famous and why tumblrinas go ga ga over him.

The last in a run of truly great Bruce Springsteen albums. It was all down hill for my relationship with his music after this one. I loved this album as a kid and I still rate it now. Perhaps not as fresh and exciting as the first two, it foreshadowed some of the bombastic tone his later albums adopted. Worth 4./5 of anyone's money.

Wait a damn minute…

Sounds like Born to Run but not as many good songs. Also he looks 10 years younger in this album cover than Born to Run even though this was released 3 years later. Low 4.

It was good. Feel like Springsteen just doesn’t take enough risks for me to really get into it. It all kinda sounds the same

Pretty good, 8/10. Good singer songwriter Bruce

Ese 78 hubo muy buena cosecha de discos: The Man Machine de Kraftwerk, debuts de Kate Bush, Pere Ubu, Magazine, , Public Image Ltd., Dire Straits, Police, The Only Ones, Devo, The Cars y Siouxsie and the Banshees, (también Chris Rea y Midnight Oil), así como discos esenciales: C´est CHic, Plastic letters y Paralell Lines, Some Girls, This year´s model, Darkness on the Edge of Town, Incantations, Équinoxe, Ambient 1: Music for Airports, All mod cons, Some girls, One Nation Under A Groove, Outlandos d´amour los directos de Cheap Trick, Thin Lizzy, Bob Marley, AC-DC y The last waltz, e incluso Grease.

跟beatles好像好像好像 好爽

Really makes you feel like you’ve lost your job at the auto plant in New Jersey in 1974

Bruce Springsteen - Darkness on the Edge of Town To be honest, only thing I ever heard of him was on the song "Born in the U.S.A.", which I wasn't really a fan of, so when I saw this album at first, I expected that it would sound similar to it, and it kinda did, but in a good way. What I really like about this is how grandious it feels when listening to this album, it makes your spirit and soul go dancing while grooving into this. There are some chill moments sure, but the rock elements are what define this album from any other rock album made in there. No wonder why he's a known artist, he for sure is one, because this album is great! 1.- Badlands = 8/10 2.- Adam Raised a Cain = 9/10 3.- Something in the Night = 9/10 4.- Candy's Room = 8/10 5.- Racing in the Street = 9/10 6.- The Promised Land = 8/10 7.- Factory = 7/10 8.- Streets of Fire = 9/10 9.- Prove It All Night = 10/10 10.- Darkness on the Edge of Town = 9/10 FINAL SCORE = 8.6/10

Not a 4 but not a 3. I’ll round up because he has a great nickname and represents blue collar ‘Merica. Some great piano makes me feel happy.

album at the edge of 3

bruuuuuuuuuuuceeee

Enjoyed

I'll add it to my tidal library and give it a few more listens at some point, but for now it's getting four stars.

I liked it. I feel like this may be one of those albums that gets better if you listen to it more. For that reason I might return to it at some point in the future Standouts Racing in the Street 4/5

Very surprised by how much this was good. This band single handedly keeping the glockenspiel cool

Enjoyed

Didn’t get all the way through

Chuis pas un gros fan du Bruce, mais je dois avouer que cet album était du genre plutôt BANGER, du rock américain honnête et sans artifices qui laisse toute la place au boss qui nous a composé pleins de bonnes tites tounes

Solides Rock Album von Bruce mit guten Songs wie „Badlands“ und „The Promise Land“. Gerne mal wiederholen, aber kein Grniestreich.

Some really good songs on this album, I'm not entirely sure why this doesn't grab me.

7.5 Springsteens out of 10 I knew of one of these songs before listening - promised land - and had heard a few when being around my dad. There’s definitely a nostalgia to this album, maybe it’s because of my dad that I feel it, but there’s something very sweet and atmospheric about the way Bruce describes his home town. I could feel the evening summer air in ‘Racing in the street’. The Boss’ voice is gorgeous and at 2:35, this small phrase really pulls at my heart strings. This album reminds be of the first time (and many times after that) that I listened to Green Day’s American Idiot. I wonder if my dad felt the same way about this album that I did listening to some of my favourite artists and concept albums. There’s definitely a story in this album, and I can’t wait to listen to it many more times.

There are two Bruce Springsteen's. Bruce Springsteen on an album, and Bruce Springsteen live. I've never seemed to enjoy albums of Bruce that much, but take me to a concert, and that dude's got all of my attention for the 3 and 1/2 hours that he plays every night.

81/100. Not his best work but a very good album

Favorite Track: Adam Raised a Cain

vet du vad?? fett bra. Älskar Bruce <3 kärlek till gaten som aldrig haft ett riktigt jobb men ändå skriver jättebra om arbetarklassen. Oj vad det är trevligt med kombinationen elgitarr och sax

The Boss! Very familiar with this one. Darkness, in my opinion, is Bruce’s last GREAT album. The three preceding albums seem to concentrate more on musical composition, and this is the last album to do so. I feel that, after this album, Springsteen fell into a comfortable groove musically. Lyrically, he moves away from the Jersey shore themes but continues to paint detailed portraits of troubled characters striving for something better. Love this album.

Talk about the Brucey bonus!

Bruce Springsteen is someone I’ve known about my whole life, but I never really paid much attention to him. This was the first album of his I’ve listened to from start to finish, and it was pretty solid heartland rock focused on the struggles of the working class. The piano stood out the most to me. It’s definitely one of the driving instruments. The album has a good mix of heavier tracks and solid ballads.

The good old Bruce

Really good album, maybe more like a 4.5 or 5, although it wasn't 100% my type of of music, if that makes sense? Don't care to make track reviews😂😂😂😂

IT'S TIME FOR TRACK REVIEWS MY FAVOURITE SEGMENT: 1. Badlands - simply fire / 2. Adam Raised a Cain - It's a very good song. I don't think that it gets too preachy, but rather is an effective Biblical allegory for the message he was trying to tell / 3. Something in the Night - gate of steiner sounding ahh song. Good! / 4. Candy's Room - Usually not the biggest fan of personalized anecdotes like this, but this song is too good to pass up on for that reason / 5. Racing in the Street - Tad too long, not my favourite, not bad either, probably a pass tho / 6. The Promised Land - that sax goes ridiculous. Chat is this walk of life BUT GOOD??? AIJOSDFOADOF / 7. Factory - Not bad, not for me / 8-10. Good! / This album occasionally uses dissonant sounds, but they don't overstay their welcome and add to the songs. Sometimes the songs will go quiet. It's unexpected but works super well. This album was gaseous. Even the lesser good songs were fine. Listened to this twice since I didn't pay too much attention the first listen. It was too fire though so I had to do it justice. 4/5 maybe even a 4.5 but who can tell. Great album, anticipating more Springsteen.

Favorite: The Promised Land

Hadn't heard this album before, not my favorite from ol Bruce, but I still quite liked it

Great start to finish

I really liked this. I honestly haven’t heard a lot of Springsteen outside of the hits. I think, to me, the hits are actually a deterrent for me liking him more!

Wasn’t expecting much only knowing Badlands from this album. Surprised that the rest of the albums is much better than the opening track. Will listen to again.

01) Badlands - 7,5 02) Adam Raised a Cain - 7,5 03) Something in the Night - 7,5 04) Candy's Room - 7,5 05) Racing in the Street - 7,5 06) The Promised Land - 7,5 07) Factory - 7,5 08) Streets of Fire - 7,5 09) Prove It All Night - 8,0 10) Darkness on the Edge of Town - 7,5 TOTAL: 7,55 (76/100) Current ranking: 164/333

Strong album. Adam Raised a Cain is my favorite track off the album.

adam raised a cain song title of all time

Didn't know as many songs as i did with Born to run. Didn't hit quite as hard a Nebraska. Still a good listen.

I've mentioned before that I'm not the biggest Springsteen fan. But I'm finding that, at least the albums chosen for this list, are pretty darn good. This isn't as good to me as Nebraska, but it's not bad at all and I'd listen to it again.

If you told me that comedian Bobcat Goldthwait also had a music career and then played "Streets of Fire," I very well might have bought it. I did warm up to this album a little bit after a few plays. REVISION: Well, I think I shorted this one in my initial rating; it kept growing on me. I'm editing my rating from a 3 to a 4.

It’s always a good day when you listen to the entirety of a Bruce Springsteen album. And this one is no exception. I loved this album; while I was listening to it, I felt as if I already knew the songs. Every song has a familiar sound, and half of them ended up in my Favourites playlist. 4.3/5, amazing work once again by The Boss.

Ég þekki öll helstu lögin hans en man að þegar bróðir minn fór á tónleika með honum hugsaði ég að ég þekkti hann ekki nógu vel og það er alveg rétt Þekkti ekkert af lögunum á þessari plötu en hún var mjög fín. Ég þarf bara að hluata á hann oftar. Hún er í 3.5 þannig að ég toga hana smá upp

Springsteen at his best on this album. Best lyrics.

It's a nice Bruce album, but not one of his best.

There's a reason why he's nicknamed "The Boss" and not "The Deadbeat Employee". This album slaps.

The Boss, baby. Never fails

Really good album. Will listen again.

hade en skippat racing in the street som inte bara är en seg låt, den är också töntig som fan, så hade det blivit en femma. då hade albumet blivit extremt tight. resten är kanon. stark fyra

This album is very good, for some reason it doesn’t hit me as much as some of his others. It does have some absolute bangers, but none of them stand out as much as some of the songs on other albums

Not a Springsteen album I’d listened to before but some great tunes on this one

He was building the boss

Fav: Racing In The Street Least Fav: Candy’s Room I’m surprised at all the reviews here saying or implying he can’t sing, Springsteen’s voice is great!

I have been getting banger after banger my goodness! My favorite Bruce record and it has been a while since I’ve given it a proper listen so I ran through the whole thing. It’s melancholic, and an authentic commiseration on the personal effects on the slow de-industrialization of the 1970. It staring down a bullet that you know is coming but it’s all you’ve know so you take it with as much hope as you can muster! Now Bruce is in top songwriting form and it holds some of his most wrenchingly unhinged vocal performances (though sometimes his vocals can be grating). Adam Raised a Cain is one of his heaviest most ferocious tunes ever and Promiseland is beautifully written and composed! Not huge fan of the Springsteen power ballads so there are a few low moments on the record, but the high points outweigh them by a mile. The death of heartland documented by one of its most potent bards.

i enjoyed this, had some bangers overall, most tracks have replay value, would listen again

very good

Good stuff—I’ve only ever really listened to hit singles and the brilliant Seeger Sessions, so was glad to explore earlier Springsteen.

Filled with doubt, Bruce heads to the interior, both of himself and of America, and finds that no matter how far you drive, desperation is creeping up behind you.

In "Racing in the Street", who do you think Bruce wants to fuck more: the guy who built his car or the car itself?

Some great underated songs on this album. Promised Land is one of my favorite Bruce songs. Non-skipper front to back good stuff.

It’s the boss learning how to sound like The Boss What’s not to love

Rockin' like a clenched fist, mumbling like a wino.

Enjoyable album but doesn't reach the threshold for greatness that is a 5. Now it did immediately make me listen to Born in the USA. Now that's a 5.

ADAM RAISED A CANE! This album rocks, classic Bruce. It start's so hot with Badlands, one of my favorite Bruce songs. The Promised Land is another favorite, I listened to it a few times. I hadn't heard "Darkness on the Edge of Town" before, I liked it a lot. It was a cool ending to the album. It isn't bangers the whole way through, but it has a whole lot of them. A few songs were a little boring compared to their peers, but I didn't have a bad time for one second. 42 minutes is a great run-time. 8/10

It's old Bruce, which is more authentic and believable than newer Bruce. I like the more stripped down sound vs. his previous album.

classic. good. not earth shattering

What a change of pace from the not-so-successfully somber (i.e. lugubrious) Nebraska. Sometimes the blue-collarism (Factory) and wild-life masculinity (Racing in the Street) can feel like phony affectations, but for the most part this is full of wall-to-wall bangers, with the exception of maybe Candy's Room.

I enjoyed this one. A very nostalgic feel to it Love the fact you can hear different instruments throughout. The piano and the sax parts especially 4 ⭐️

Considering this is my inaugural review for newfilewav, I will treat it with the care and consideration that testifies to my worth as a member of this group. What a joy to begin with this album. The resonant bass takes you straight to the dive bars of Bruce Springsteen’s native New Jersey. The gritty vocals ring home the themes of working class struggle and triumph over adversity. The melancholy organ which crops up now and again testifies to the fact that there is beauty in the struggle. Very enjoyable listen. Personal favourite: Streets of Fire.

I really enjoyed "Badlands". Nice album.

Badlands Adam Raised a Cain Candy's Room Racing in the Street The Promised Land Prove It All Night Darkness on the Edge of Town

Not quite Born to Run but the title track is up there.

My last album for review was "Nebraska" and I complained about having to listen to 10 depressing Bruce Springsteen songs in a row. I think the 1001 album generator god must have heard me because it decided to give me this album right after. Well joke's on you generator god, because I actually liked this one. Seemed like a little more variety and little more anger than depression. Whatever it was, it spoke to me a little more even if every song still had that "working class guy down on his luck is overwhelmed by the damn system, but maybe love will save him" motif that Nebraska also had.

Creo que va dsps de born to run? De todas formas esta entre mis favoritos de Springsteen, me gusta mucho el rock q propone y la temática de underdog que le gusta hacer

Energizing, fun, and sometimes somber album. Don’t think I’ve heard many songs from Bruce Springsteen, so it was cool to hear some. Standouts: Something in the Night, Racing in the Street, Factory, Streets of Fire, Prove It All Night, and Darkness On the Edge of Town.

Nicht meine Musik, aber top produziert, tolle Texte, und die Persönlichkeit von Springsteen machen alles wett.

Classic from the boss

Road rock from the 70s. Songs to drive at night. Guitar solos and lyrics about life. About being alive. That's definitely my kind of music. Springsteen is one of the artists living on my waiting list. But with the discovery of this album, from now on I'm going to rush to get to know the others in depth.

The band behind this album is just amazing. In every song the instruments are played expertly. The issue for me is Springsteen's voice. Although I got used to it, his voice can be really hard to understand. Pretty good album though and makes sense as part of this list.

This is the album from Springsteen that I know the least so it was nice to rediscover it.

Not my favorite Bruce album, but that's like saying Rocky Road isn't my favorite ice cream. There's still all the elements that make it great, plenty to appreciate on its own, and it hits me good enough on such a certain day.

6/21/24. First time giving Bruce Springsteen a legitimate chance, and glad I did! I understand the appeal on one album sample, songs are well written, fun, and diverse for the genre. Also very sing-along which is never a bad thing. Will definitely revisit!

Liked it even more than I thought I would

Very nice to sit at home

Zadziwiająco spoko

Hard to argue with the boss! Not super familiar with this album, and it was pretty solid. Glad this was on the list on a Friday. Very listenable.

The king has arrived! Gotta love Bruce.. and if you don’t, you’re not American!!

Old school Boss where he tells the struggles of the everyday man while providing good guitar rhythms and retro sax interludes is hard to not enjoy. This album is good but clearly not his best work. This is probably my 4th favorite of his yet it’s still really good. Some songs on this are like a precursor to the 90s grunge where you sing along by mumbling. Is that good for an artist probably not but it’s fun. This album hits that blend of born to run while also trying to be a bit cooler than it is like 80s Boss. Overall still very good but not the best Boss. 7.7/10

pretty good showing by Bruce, he's a really great storyteller in his music, even though some of his other albums are better than this, its still well worth the time to listen to.

Contains some of my favorite Bruce songs like “Badlands” “Promised Land” “Prove it all night” and some of my least favorite “Adam Raised a Cain”. All in all it’s a solid album that’s sandwiched between two amazing albums in his discography

I really loved this! Springsteen was a bit of a joke when I was growing up but this was a real revelation. I especially loved 'Promised Land', 'Candy's Room' and 'Badlands'.

One of Springsteen’s most concise and well-rounded albums. Kinda the perfect package for him, other than Born To Run

Great album. Classic Springsteen.

This is not one of my favorites by the Boss but its still a classic with the classic E St Band sound he solidified in his previous album masterpiece, Born to Run. It seems a bit darker than that album but has his great lyrics which not only paint a picture but return you to a time we can all relate to.

Favourite songs: Badlands, Adam Raised a Cain, The Promised Land, Factory, Prove It All Night Least favourite songs: Streets of Fire 4/5

Bruce Springsteen is generally OK and so is this. Will definitely be listen to this again in the future.

Pretty good, worth a listen.

Solid rock and roll

Quite effective

Every time they blast into a song with a rippin harmonica, I recoil, but Bruce wins me back every time. Go, Bruce, go. You’ll bust outta that dusty old town one of these nights.

We've had two all-timers from Springsteen so Darkness On The Edge Of Town feels a slight climbdown from SUCH a high bar, but it's still quality. There is some obvious maturity in themes and styling from Born To Run prior to this but it works, and like I said, he's music's greatest ever storyteller. There's nothing that lifts it into the upper echelons of the most legendary tracks but every song is quality, Racing In The Street is the best of those, it's outstanding in every way, while Adam Raised A Cain, The Promised Land and the title track are all very good as well. It's a high 4 on the basis that Born To Run is the highest of 5s and Born In The USA is a lower 5.

This is really good. I I have it behind Born In The USA, but ahead of Born To Run. It's definitely a bit more reflective and less bombastic than Born To Run, and is probably better for it - doesn't have the obvious hits like Born To Run (Badlands aside), but it's wonderful storytelling, nicely put together, and a great ebb and flow. The title track to close it off is my favourite, Racing In The Street just behind. A high 4/5.

Solid Album, but Badlands is great! The Boss’s 70s music is his best stuff, but does have some great songs in the 80s when he was more popular.

Jersey Legend!!! Classic to start off the album with "Badlands". I had really high hopes for this album coming into it but didnt reach the top. Not saying it was bad but it didn't reach my 5-star status.

It's a classic for a reason. It's probably not my favorite Bruce record though. It is a bit back loaded. But the great songs are true all timers, especially the title track. Could see getting to a 5, but I think a 4 feels right for me.

I'm docking a point for limiting Clarence Clemons to three tracks.

Nice. Not my favorite but I think I’d like to return

I don't get Springsteen as a fan - I think he's made a lot of four star albums but none I'd give five stars to. I find him strangely emotionless, despite all the snarling and balls-to-the-wall stuff. However this is a little bit of an exception, and definitely my favourite of his alongside Nebraska.

Great songwriting skills and a great hangover helper this morning! Such depth to these lyrics, easy to connect to like the Boss is directly talking to you. 3.8

Doesn’t sound like 1978, it’s very fresh. I’m not a big fan of Springsteens vocals but really enjoyed this album. The solo in Prove it All Night has a tone of frantic desperation and I love it.

Really showcased the vocals

I liked it, such a great live performer and he’s able to translate that to the recording.

Great album, not the best Springsteen ever produced but still powerful.

На самом деле, поставила повыше оценку за вторую песню альбома - кажется, первая песня Спрингстина, которая мне по-настоящему понравилась

Just like the Beatles, I had to grade on a curve against his other albums. A five compared with the other albums in the world, but this isn't a five the way Born to Run is a five. Bruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuce!

Some of Springsteen's great songs here. Not his best, but still iconic.

He is dark. Probably my favorite album from him so far. Still probably wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it normally though.

Good music but I can really only handle Bruce's voice in small doses.

This is such a great album. Far from the muscle arena rock on Born in the USA and more serious than The river. This is dark and haunting at times. Love to drive at night and listen to this album.

Solid record.

I tend to hear his songs playing everywhere and don’t listen to albums. But this one was good.

Oh Bruce, the banger machine. I didn't know this album all that well, apart from the title track and a couple of others. It felt grimier and less polished than the big beasts of Born in The USA and Born To Run. More down-at-home and somehow very personal. I liked that, even if it did lack some of the grandeur of his biggest hits. Once again, I'm left wondering who these people are who consider The Boss' voice to be anything other than absolutely stellar.

Always liked Bruce's music

Classic Springsteen with solid lyrics covered by his gruff, unimpressive voice. BUT...you simply cannot help feeling good after listening to his music so who the hell cares about the technicalities! 4 / 5

Un tremendo vozarrón. Cavernoso. Pasional. Eso y una banda sólida definen a éste disco. Buena recomendación.

Bruce in seinen Anfängen. Schon damals sackstark. Manchmal besser manchmal weniger.

8.52/10 Top 3 Songs 1. Adam Raised a Cain 2. Badlands 3. Candy's Room

A very good Bruce Effort - 4 stars

Bruce is a clasic.

Bruce Springsteen is a legend and this has got to be one of his best albums, the second half definitely just keeps going from strength to strength.

Very good album. Maybe one of his best. But that E-Street sound just doesn’t float this boat. And the stigma! The Boss? Give me a break.

Badlands - 8/10 Adam Raised a Cain - 8/10 Something in the Night - 8/10 Candy's Room - 8/10 Racing in the Street - 8/10 The Promised Land - 7.5/10 Factory - 8/10 Streets of Fire - 8.5/10 Prove It All Night - 8.5/10 Darkness on the Edge of Town - 8/10 TOTAL - 80/100

Not a big fan of the Boss but it's good stuff

Effortlessly American. I loved the saxophone solos Springsteen threw in, as it was not something attributed to rather brutish and bravado leaning American rock. Good album but I personally didn’t find it appealing. 3.5/5

Helt udemærket Bruce Album. Skal nok være i humør til det men så kan det noget.

I like the second side most, but definitely all worth more listens.

Prima album om het weekend in te gaan. Iets waar je pa een cd van zou hebben die al 5 jaar in de auto ligt

De baas Ken van tevoren alleen Badlands Prima album

I just did a Springsteen discography in the last few months and a lot of Bruce fans put this one in their top 5, it might not even get top 10 for me. It's still a

What a wonderful album!

Bruce Springsteen - Darkness on the edge of town This is the follow up to Both to Run which was Springsteen's biggest album at the time. This album has a darker tone than Born to Run. While not as joyful or fun, I think it's a great album. And it's interesting to know that there were lots of songs written during these sessions, some would appear on the follow up album the River and some Bruce gave to other musicians. Notably the song he gave to Patti Smith, "Because the Night" which became her biggest hit and a song that did well for 10,000 maniacs. 4/5

i liked it but Bruce ain't for me

It’s no born in the USA but it’s pretty great 4/5

In a vacuum, Darkness is a great album. Unfortunately, my brain has to compare it to my love of Springsteen’s previous release, Born to Run. While I don’t usually let an artist’s other work cloud my judgement, Born to Run is such a gargantuan achievement and one of my very favorite albums ever. It was also Springsteen‘s “last shot” record and it sounds like it. I feel Born to Run set the pace for Darkness and no part of it is able to top the raw, going-for-broke glory of its predecessor. Alright.. so what’s good about this album? A lot, of course. For one, the production is cleaner and the band is tighter than on any previous Bruce album. As a vocalist, Springsteen takes a step forward in his confidence as, on a couple moments through this album, he is absolutely howling. Badlands, Prove it All Night, Racing in the Street and the title track are all top tier E Street songs. Darkness, in spots, even finds the band exploring heavier riffs and more soulful arranging than ever before. There’s just something here preventing me from feeling it as genuinely and thoroughly as his previous album. 8/10

The closest The Boss came to making a hard rock album. A number of searing guitar solos which is quite surprising but Bruce pulls it off. Really solid but because Born To Run and later Born in The USA are such high benchmarks, this one is a tad behind. But still highly recommend.

Great driving music!

The Boss!

Quintessential Springsteen sound Promised land.

Mostly a 4 because of nostalgia

Classic.

He really gets emotion across in his vocals.

This is, in fact, a Bruce Springsteen album. I had never heard this one before, and I liked it. Favorite tracks were Badlands, Adam Raised A Cain, Streets of Fire, and Prove It All Night.

I prefer the more upbeat tone of Born to Run, but this is still solid Boss

It was some cool 80s stuff. Not much for me to say, it’s better than On The Run.

it's just nice

Enjoyed this. Never listened to Springsteen. I definitely enjoy his more energetic songs here to the slower ones. Candy's Room absolutely blew me away. What a song! Close choice between that and Adam Raised A Cain. Standout Track: Candy's Room

If you like Bruce Springsteen you will like this album

Auf The Boss ist ganz einfach Verlass. Tolle Texte, tolle Musiker und eine unverwechselbare Stimme macht dieses Album zu einem sehr guten Album.

Did not know It, but It was worthwhile

Solid riffs and some nice melodies

Nebraska, Western Stars, Darkness, BITUSA, Born To Run, The River..... This is a really good rock record

Ik ben inmiddels bekend met de sound van Bruce!

very classic 70s rock vibe. it feels like good highway driving music on a late night and therefore i should give it a shot one day 5/7

Solid album. There is a reason Bruce Springsteen is the boss. Album gets better and better each time you listen to it.

This album wants me to work in a steel mill just so I can spit on the ass hole forman's desk when I quit and pursue my dreams in the big city. I got the spirit of small town America in my soul after this. Great album, a little too boomer nostalgic for me though.

One of the best works of the Boss

I can understand why it’s held in such high regard, just not for me

Not bad, but bland?

Already knew the hits from this one - I did discover Racing in the Streets, Candy’s Room and Something in the Night. Bruce bores me, no denying his genius though.

Another fine album and it definitely sticks together thematically across the album as a whole. Although Springsteen is an excellent writer, I find that many of his songs fall into the same kind of stylistic form--definitely one that works but somewhat repetitively formulaic. His use of piano, saxophone and other horns and the melancholy of a working middle class that wants something more from the world it has been given, do capture a picture that is unique. He is solid in his abilities both lyrically and musically. But I'm not sure the emotions of the music and of the lyrics always tie together. There is a sense in which the music presents a repeated cycle of rising to a challenge in which it seems like there might be a break-thru but which in fact is never lyrically resolved by the characters. I find the guitar parts particularly excellent on this album and much more strongly in a rock'n'roll vein. Also I feel the characters of these songs are more solidly defined and less theatrical in their construction than those on Born to Run. A strong album for certain and one worth multiple listens.

Really liked this album, the vocals really amazed me as Bruce has such a great range singing with a nice roughness at times but also a more delicate voice in others.I think Adam Raised A Cain and Racing In The Street are great examples of this and are my personal favorite tracks.

The Boss has got some good tracks.

I feel like a moron for not listening to any Bruce Springsteen before this. This is a brilliantly produced, cohesive project that makes its theme obvious throughout and it's a treat to listen to, but it's another strong 4/5 for me.

If I ever wanted a complete foreigner, an alien say to understand a certain glorious feeling of burgeoning, rangy, late teens energy of an American summer in a tight t-shirt, perfectly worn pair of jeans, a cherished moment of perfect hair and flirting from car windows? I’d play them this album and lend them my converse sneakers.

His first few albums are extremely loved by the critics and fans alike. The songs are complex and lyrics are compelling. Standouts: Darkness on the Edge of Town, Prove it All Night, Candy's Room, Badlands, Adam Raised the Cain, Racing in the Street, The Promise Land. 4.5

Ahh, late 70s Bruce. The impossible task of following up Born to Run, which means it was held to an incredibly high standard. As time has passed, I think the appreciation for this album has grown-it's classic Bruce, great lyrics and great music, telling stories from his world. Love it.

I don't know if there was one song I knew well on this album before starting. It's hard to follow up an album like Born to Run with anything, but this does a good job. It's almost as if the characters from those stories made their way out of Jersey and into the world after school and faced more wide ranging adult issues. Though it misses the peaks and valleys of some of his other work, it is undeniably Bruce 3.75/5

This was considerably better than I anticipated. Man knows how to paint a picture.

Loved it

Aching, yearning, rocking. Not the greatest Boss record but pretty damn great nonetheless.

The only Bruce Springsteen I really like is his slower, more somber stuff like "Nebraska." However, I highly respect him, his playing, and his songwriting. I just find that nothing really stands out to me on his more rock albums. Everything just bleeds together. I don't feel it has the catchy hooks of a Petty or the hard-hitting lyrics of a Mellencamp. I'd probably give this album a 3.5 based on a combination of my respect for Springsteen and my actual preferences.

Finally a Springsteen album I’m willing to claim as my own. It couldn’t have started out better than Badlands. It’s high energy and engaging. I won’t claim Springsteen’s voice though. It is OK most of the time, excels rarely, and sounds strained at other times. One thing I just realized that I don’t like about Springsteen sometimes are his lyrics. He has songs that I equate to country-typical lyrics that are a turnoff for me. It’s the my truck, my dog, my guns, and my girl stuff. It’s the most basic, straightforward, simple down home verses. Springsteen sings about a “ ‘69 Chevy with a 396” and “driving over the county line” et cetera. These types of lyrics work fine with Bruce’s rock music, but I like those passages less than the rest. Something clicked because Bruce uses, what I associate as, “country style” lyrics often and I think that’s a reason I’ve never really gotten into him. The music on this album is wonderful though. The opening to Something In The Night is great as is the aforementioned Badlands.

Born to Run was able to grow on me with time. But yesterday was my first time hearing Darkness, and it's another case of an album that has to grow. It's more of the same as Born to Run with a harder rock sound. I like how the second side essentially repeats the first side in order but with a fuller pop-accessible sound. Great vocals and lyrics that explode in emotion. Favorites: Badlands, Prove it All Night, Darkness on the Edge of Town

No Nebraska but pretty good

Great album by The Boss, massive hits and great deeper cuts.

The opening track, Badlands, is executed really well, perfectly setting the mysterious, goofily-lighthearted-yet-kinda-serious tone of the rest of the album. His distinctive singing fits the songs really well, especially on the album’s first side. The sound is slightly less “commercialised” than his later album Born in the U.S.A., which I’ve already encountered on this list (and gave a 3/5 rating). Instrumentation is good, but doesn’t vary noticeably from song to song (with the exception of the piano-ballad tracks, which are arguably the weaker tracks anyway). Still, good stuff. A jolly good time.

Good as expected

Допада ми се, пријатно за слушање, нема неки хит да грми, али за лагано слушање у позадини веома солидно. 7/10

I've always been interested in learning more about The Boss. This great album is a mix of heavy guitar jams, mellow ballads, bluesy licks and contemplative coming-of-age stories. Every song is unique and distinct but it flows great as a single album about the trials and tribulations of the working man in the 70s. Adam Raised a Cain - great guitar playing. Racing in the Street is definitely my favorite and will be added to my regular playlist of beloved songs. Factory reminds me a lot of my dad working at the BASF plant in the 80s and 90s. The only problem I've ever had with Springsteen, and maybe it's just me, but his voice is so flat in all of his songs. That's the only thing that keeps me from giving it a 5.

First off, I can't believe this album is 45 years old and it's his FOURTH studio album. Bruce is undeniably one of the greatest American Singer-Songwriters alive. And he is still making music. This album is a whirlwind of emotions. It's overall probably a little darker than his previous albums and it's gritty—a real blue-collar rock and roll album. The songs vary between darkness, hope, love, and loss. I don't know that I've ever listened to this album front-to-back, but I played it 3 times in a row at work yesterday and heard new things each time. Standout tracks for me - Racing in the Street, Something in the Night, and Streets of Fire

Really enjoyed it

Known before: Standouts: 1.Badlands 5.Racing in the Street Rating: 6.5

He is the boss after all. Never realized how bad he sung though

If only for the lyrics of "Adam Raised a Cain"!

Bruce Springsteen has somehow consistantly escaped any album listening experience for me. It is pretty much everything I'd expect from springsteen, as even from his big hits you can tell he nailed his sound down very early. It's sung from the heart, it's grand in scale, and there's so much going on in every track. The guy was born to write songs like these.

Some absolute classics on here. A couple haven't aged as well. Great album

luv da boss man

Enjoyed it very much.

Really enjoyed this album, more so than I was expecting to! I went in thinking, "OK, The Boss is an American institution, but I never really jived with his big hits! Born in the USA (song) kind of sucks." Listening to one of his albums start to finish really helped understand the appeal. It's well paced, diverse, and carries an overall common vibe.

It’s not my favorite Springsteen, but at the same time there’s nothing to really complain about. I am a true son of NJ, four stars.

So I came into this thinking it’s not one of my favorite Bruce outings, but man does it hit a sweet spot for me right now. When Bruce’s songwriting hits for me, it REALLY hits. From the opening track Badlands (maybe my favorite song of his) I just was rocked to my core. Such evocative and vibrant lyricism on every song. I don’t think I’ll be revisiting a lot of the slower storytelling songs out of context of the record, but listening as a whole they flow and vibe very nicely. It certainly feels like a very complete and deliberate album experience. Side note, ridiculous that Because The Night was written for these sessions and Bruce is such a good songwriter he could give it to Patti Smith because he already had enough love songs. Anyway, final verdict? VERY strong 4, almost a 5 but I dock it a little because I didn’t really connect with some of the album cuts. Top tracks: Badlands, Adam Raised A Cain, Something In The Night, Candy’s Room, The Promised Land, Prove It All Night, Darkness On The Edge Of Town

Really great album, a couple tracks left me wanting more, but this can be a 5 depending on my mood. Either way, this is a great driving in the middle of the night when your sad about your cashiering job

‘murica! The Promised Badlands are anthems.

It's a milder sound than the Boss I love most, but not in a very bad way. Just different.

Really feels like a complete album. I liked this way more than I would've thought. Storytelling was great, tons of musicality and variation in instruments, some excellent solo music sections. Thoroughly enjoyable, even with a few slow spots for me. Fav tracks: Adam Raised a Cain, Badlands, Streets of Fire

buena voz buen guitarreo buenas melodías

Great album, really enjoyed the more complicated lyrical content in comparison to his other albums that I've heard, particularly liked songs like Racing in the Street. My only complaint is the production on some songs sound off, almost like the song was recorded for another album, I found this most particularly with Adam Raised A Cain.

If you only ever hear Bruce Springsteen on the radio you might think his Americana energy is good old boy music for blind patriots. There is patriotism there, but it's the sort of self-reflective, introspective patriotism that fuels the fires of change. It's a battle cry to overcome the grim beat of the paranoid streets, rise up from this broken system, reclaim what is rightfully ours. He echos the cognitive dissonance of the American ideals with the American reality. It's about freedom, truth, beauty and love. America is Bohemia if you want it to be, and Springsteen's words and music make me think it's still possible.

I feel like this is an album where it would grow on me with many repeat listens. Since I'm doing this 1001 thing I'm not really able to do that in the same way (although I will come back to it) I'm giving it 4 stars. I could see a future me giving it 5.

I'm told there are five Springsteen albums on this list an this is likely the best of them? Well being my first I've got nothing to compare it to so here we go. Badlands stands out for me so much that I feel like this album needs a few more listens to get more out of the other songs. Certainly Adam Raised a Cain, Racing in the Street, and The Promised Land piqued my interest. Certainly the album deserves another listen.

This is my fifth and, I think, final Springsteen album from the list. I liked it! The infusion of old timey religion definitely adds something - gives it a Tom Waits/Nick Cave murder ballad kinda vibe in places. Fave track - "Adam Raised a Cain" is my immediate stand out fave. "Streets of Fire" was another standout... I think this album is my fave of the five on the list!

It was fun, felt good

He’s a blast he’s a beauty he’s the boss. Awesome album a lot of fun he just fuking crushes it. I love how much emotion he puts into his music it’s contagious. Not much to say other than thought it was great would fuck it up again. Would love to see him live. -B Street Band

God! What an album! This album is so dynamic, you could listen to this passively to study or chill out, or you can listen to it actively and rock out if you want. Springsteen is highly unique and doesn’t really fall into a specific genre or generation. I listened to this album back-to-back 5 times today. It felt like the right album in every situation I was in. It is both energetic and fun while also being relaxing and somber. My family loves Springsteen but I’ve never really given him much of a thoughtful listen until now. Definitely changed my perspective and I can see myself listening to this album for the rest of my life.

Love Bruce. I'm having a hard time listening through all the way to these albums, though. Maybe it's just my short attention span. Not sure.

Was a decent album 4/5

Not my favorite Springsteen album but he’s still The Boss.

Classic, young, everyman Springsteen.

I thought I would hate it but I kinda loved it at the end

Not a big fan of Springsteen - I don't "own" a single album of his and almost never ever purposefully listen to any of his songs, but he does make some quality music even if it doesn't resonate with me. But for what this is, it's good stuff. Bruce turning into a political liberal is a bit of a disappointment given his working class roots (?), but that's what the luxury of financial success can buy you.

This is a great album! A bit more rocking than some of his other material

Bruce is Bruce. Need I say more.

Excellent, engaging, enjoyable. Great collection of stories that feel really relatable. Loved it!

Familiar with Bruce Springsteen but not heard this album. I quite liked Badlands, Racing in the Street and Streets of Fire.

Don't listen to a lot of Springsteen but from what I heard here, great powerful voice. I like the arraignment of the music. But there was something that didn't really grab me in this album. I'd probably give it a strong 7 to a light 8.

Great album. Springsteen really doesn't miss, in over 50 years of professional music. Great listen! Might be biased because I already like Springsteen, but solid album. Would listen again, 4 stars.

Oh wow. Bruce has ALWAYS had the old man voice. This is the sound I associate with classic rock. I never realized it was just Bruce. Whenever someone mentioned him I always wondered if I had ever even heard him. Yes. He's everywhere, I just didn't know. This feels like discovering the heart of classic rock. The Thing is, I cannot tell the difference between any of the songs. I feel like this album is one amazing song twelve times.

Interesting mix. Not many thoughts on it but would probably listen again.

Once you get past the weird style of singing he has some pretty good songs

Good with a couple of songs that are almost great. Favorite song: Candy's room

not bad

Väldigt bra album Favorit: The promised land

This is Angry Bruce!! Enjoyable, but geez, this guy deserves his own genre. Not something I’d listen to for relaxation. Maybe for reflective times.

Bleak but optimistic like a lot of his Springsteen’s work, this is a grower and I ended up enjoying it quite a lot in the end.

New Jersey blue collar rock at its best. I've never had a huge draw to "The Boss" but I always enjoyed his radio hits. This album had a nice bluesy-sounding rock feel to it. "Racing in the Street" is probably my favorite track. I enjoyed the album quite a bit.

I like this more than Born In the U.S.A. It feels warmer, more consistent and personal. A good progression from Born To Run as well. Overall, not too big on Springsteen but I like hearing his music occasionally and I enjoyed this. One thing for sure...Max Weinberg is seriously great. https://youtu.be/0fTs5o9UjMI?si=2NOfzt7kigUQxt8H

After having only listened to “Nebraska”, it’s great to hear what everyone means when they mention “The Boss”.
