Darkness on the Edge of Town

Thank you for this one. I needed it today. Badlands is one of the best opening tracks I've experienced. What a great way to kick this thing off. Adam Raised a Cain is a driving, blues-based anthem track set on delivering some personal details between him and his father. Then Something in the Night softens things for a moment. The lines "Well you're born with nothing And better off that way Soon as you've got something they send Someone to try and take it away" are obviously about the music industry, but appeal to everything. Candy's Room and Racing in the Street hit a similar theme, a girl or a race is what helps make meaning out of an otherwise meaningless existence. Life is at night. Anyway, this is a solid outing for Springsteen. His style is on full display, his themes are explored with a maturation. Following Born to Run had to be some kind of impossible idea, and it's smart to do something like this.

As some people say it started to grow on me, but then.... it started to shrink on me.

Superclassic album, every song is a classic -this kind of album shows that a scale from 1 to 10 stars might have been more appropriate than 1 to 5.

Another album that sounds pretty good, but doesn't really blow me away either.

Pretty boring

Early Springsteen is a lot edgier than his later work, more raw and honest. Enjoyable and one I would listen to again

Springsteen is yet another in the long list of artists I mostly missed when they were huge in the 70s and 80s. I didn't miss him entirely, though, so I'm somewhat familiar with some of these tracks. I had never listened to this album all the way through before, not by a long shot, and I really like it. It's a bit more raw and gritty rock sounding than I expected. I like the lyrics a lot. I have noted before in my mind that I've liked the lyrics on the handful of Springsteen songs with which I'm familiar. He's an excellent writer. I had worried his voice might annoy me, and sometimes when he's screaming it comes close, but it fits so well with what's going on in the song that it's not too much. And, dang, this whole band plays fantastically well. I never saw them perform live in concert and I have a feeling I would've really enjoyed the shows they did in support of this album.

This album was great. I do admit there is still a few songs that still need to grow on me, but whoa. Racing In The Street has to be my favourite track on here. It's simply beautiful.

Sometimes when I hear an album for the first time, I'll absolutely love it. Sometimes I'll absolutely hate it. But it's really rare that I'll feel "comfortable" with it from the word go. I think by about halfway into the first song here, it felt like I was catching up with an old mate. I've never heard this album before, I don't even think I've heard any of the songs from it. But it legit felt like I've heard it countless times. There's something really cool about that. Can't give it any less than full marks. 5/5.

Not a fan of brucie

Raw and gritty. This album produced Bruce's best work, because he was locked in a legal battle for ownership of his work and he couldn't put out any new music until it was settled. This meant he worked. And worked…and worked. This album has my favorite Bruce song - Something in the Night, it's such a beautiful song. Add to it Candy's Room and Racing in the Street as some of the lesser known songs to the biggies like Badlands, The Promised Land, Prove it All Night and Darkness make this a full five-star album.

I know it's almost heresy, but I'm not a fan of Bruce. He does the whole smearing words together thing, an achy raspyness, and it just...nah.

bruce springsteen still sounds like a pornstars name to me

4.5/5 stars. Love this album, such raw emotion. Lyrics and delivery are full of longing. Gets me every time.

I just don't have the passion for Bruce of others. It's ok, but not something I'd ever choose to listen to.

I’ve never gotten into Springsteen. Still haven’t, yet, but I think you probably have to pay attention to the stories in the lyrics to really appreciate what half the USA loves about it. Gonna be tough to do that with the next album coming at me every day, but at least this made me believe in that proposition. Another one to return to at a leisurely pace.

Possible explanations for Springsteen's vocal technique: 1 He was having some dentistry work completed literally at the same time as recording the vocals 2 He had a vindaloo curry the night before and was really suffering the after effects of said spicy curry 3 He was doing some charity work and was heavily influenced by patrons of said charity 4 It was a private joke on us 5 A bet 6 The 'Boss' has had permanent laryngitis since 1974 7 Too many drugs 8 Springsteen is actually an alien 👽 from the planet gogajoojoo The truth is out there somewhere!! I've always found him interesting to listen to whilst being interviewed. I like his politics and his ideas but this album was like finding someone at a party who's into the same things as you but is really dull. As the shared beliefs fail to sustain interest you look for ways to escape but it's too late. All around people are having fun but not you, you and your stupid politics and your stuck till the whole thing plays out. Being 42 minutes thankfully that's not too long and as that person heads of (them not being a night owl) you neck your pint and hope there's a bit of party left.

Right ideas I suppose but all a bit too earnest and well, Springsteen-y. Hard no from me.

I had never sat down and listened to this album before. Potentially the most "Springsteen writes music for blue collar America" Springsteen album. Feel like this is where he got the reputation. Really looking forward to all of the Bruce albums that show up on this list.

3.8 - This is a “big” album full of rawness and soul. Not sure how often I’ll come back, but I appreciated.

Classic Bruce. Amazing early album from the Boss. 'Racing in the Street' is the storytelling song he uses so well in many tunes. I prefer early Bruce as it was filled with a young person trying to make sense of what the rest of life will be now that childhood is over.

As a resident of NJ I am legally obligated to rate anything by The Boss a 4 or higher, not that it isnt deserved.

Eh, Bruce Springsteen doesn't seem to quite hit the right emotional notes for me. I can't deny he has good delivery of his lyrics, but he doesn't quite convince me with the stories he tells in each song.

Bruce Springsteen's fourth album followed his previous, breakthrough success album 'Born to Run' after a 3 year hiatus. This rock album is considered his best and is certified triple platinum, despite being a little less commercially successful than his previous album. This is a thought-provoking, emotionally charged rock album which was fun to listen to.

46. Darkness on the Edge of Town - Bruce Springsteen 10 tracks. This is everything I hoped Born to Run would be, (& wasn't). It's fantastic & even better because so many of the tracks were new to me. Have listened to it about 5 times since the 1st listen & will do again 5/5

How do you follow up 'Born to Run'? Well, like this. Wasn't the same commercial success, but you feel he wanted something rawer (apparently 70 songs recorded reduce to 10). Liquid late 70's post-industrial American.

Classic Boss here, Opening with Badlands! can't complain about that can you. The E-Street gang at their best, not yet at their peak for sure but when was that peak? Think Bruce is still peaking. The late Clarence Clemons, as usual, supreme in his supporting Sax role on so many of the Tracks and Roy Bittan on Piano and "Little" Steven Van Zandt both on Guitar and Assisting Production. Badlands and The Promise stand out tracks for me.

A classic - but is it better than The River?

Controversial opinion. This is his best work. His best, angriest and most solid batch of songs put together in the perfect order. I don't think hes ever topped this. It’s darker than what came before it and a reminder that life will beat the shit out of you and leave you broken. A story as old as time and no one tells it better than Bruce. 5/5

This was a very pleasant experience. Normally, I didn't like any of the songwriter "solo" albums that I got on this list until now. However, this one was a very nice one. Bruce Springsteen still sounds like "song for my parents" style, but sometimes I can enjoy it too. very nice instrumental arranges

Don't know why, but the inclusion of so many instruments always sounds overdone to me. Maybe it's because I'm accustomed to, or prefer, 3- or 4-piece bands. Anyway - solid album of good, listenable tunes. With plenty of brass and keyboards.

Geht dann im weiteren Vermauf Richtung „ok“, aber eine der Erkenntnisse die ich aus dieser Reihe hier ziehe: bei aller Grundsympathie; musikalisch hat der Boss mir nicht so viel zu sagen, das ist mir meist zu schwülstig und zu Hans-Hartzig.

I've never listened to this album before. I wasn't a fan of Springsteen back in the day, punk and post punk were more important too me. Now I'm older and wiser I really enjoyed it.

Darkness on the Edge of Town never has been of of my favorite Springsteen albums. I don't know why. If I look at the track listing and I see Badlands, Adam Raised a Cain, Racing in the Street, The Promised Land and Darkness on the Edge of Town, I must admit it's my mistake.

Decent but forgettable

i love his voice and his music, nothing really stood out to me but i did enjoy it!

Wherein Bruce's dad gets a new camera for the holidays and says "Kid! Stand over there by the damn closet so I can try this out" and Bruce uses it as the album cover. ??? I heard so much of this as a kid, then got into a phase where I didn't want to hear his voice at all, but even if I still felt that way there is so much more to these songs - Springsteen had a way of putting a song together musically that sounded simple (read: accessible) but had enough twists and turns and use of dynamics to keep a music dork (me) hearing something new upon each listen. There's little point trying to argue that (most of) these aren't great songs. The combination of the joyous melodies ("Badlands" - those triumphant keys, soaring sax, and galloping drums) and - ok i'll admit it - the lyrics make for classic American music. The only miss for me is "Adam Raised A Cain" - droning and repetitive. There was a time I didn't give 2 shits about anything he did and even though I do enjoy it far more now, it's not music that gives me chills. That's not a knock that he'll never be a favourite but he sure could write a tune and sometimes that alone is the right play and hits just right. 7/10 4 stars

Не в плане не для меня - музыкального сноба - а в плане не для меня - россиянина. У меня в культурный код не вшиты все вот эти восхваления американской мечты и этот почти универсальный уже звук хартленд-рока. Всякие Бомжови там, Спрингстины, Стиксы и тд, звездно-полосатые флаги, мотоциклы и пиво бад - это немного мимо меня. А без оголтелого ура-патриотизма к пендосам такая музыка не имеет достаточно крепких ног, чтобы выстоять против широкой русской души. В таком случае нужно обладать просто бронебойнешими мелодиями, как в St Elmo's Fire, например. А это так. Песни как песни. С ними либо рождаешься и взрослеешь, либо нахуй они тебе не упали. Практически математически выведенный середняк из палаты мер и весов, 5/10.

О Брюсе Спрингстине у меня ранее сложилось впечатление как об исполнителе простых прямолинейных песен чисто для американской аудитории. Возможно, из-за, вероятно, главного хита – Born in the USA. Тут же я слышу вполне годное интернациональное музло, качественный стадионный роцк. С мощной энергетикой, внятными, разнообразными мотивами, хорошим звуком. Даже оригинальным – в нём будто содержатся черты авторской песни а-ля Боб Дилан, Леонард Коэн и ориентированного на массы эпичного роцка а-ля Queen и Мит Лоуф. Слушается на одном дыхании даже при репите. Думаю, на массовый концерт в те годы вообще по кайфу было бы сходить. Вероятно, классика роцка: даёт эстетику, создаёт настрой, качает. Но всё же не настолько глубокая и цепляющая, чтобы в 2к22 на плеер кидать.

Some Elton John has creeped in during the intervening years between 'Born to Run' and this LP. This one does cross too much into ostentatious territory, unfortunately - the tracks feel just a tad overwrought but not memorable.

“Darkness on the Edge of Town” by Bruce Springsteen (1978) Any Bruce Springsteen album should be assessed in the context his huge popularity, his outsized aspirations, and his copious ego. Here, once again, he comes up short. Comparisons with Van Morrison and Bob Dylan make it perfectly clear that Springsteen is not in their class. His songwriting definitely strives to be poetic, but the striving gets in the way of the poetry. Morrison and Dylan make it sound easy because to them it is. His voice is unendingly mumbly, sloppy, and unconvincingly snarly. I think I figured out what he was chasing in “Something In the Night”: a note sung at the right pitch. The one plus on this album, its only saving feature really, is the clean backing by the E Street Band. These guys are really talented professionals, and they alone save this album from a rating of “1”. But even this aspect of the recording seems constrained, as if there were a reluctance to displease the Boss (I refuse to capitalize “the”). Once again, Springsteen tries to appeal to and pose as the working class hero, but ends up as marionette wearing a hard hat that doesn’t quite fit. “Factory” is so inauthentic it could only appeal to non-proletarians, mindless proletarians, and mindless non-proletarians. Expressing one’s yearning is fine, but pretending to have attained what one yearns for is off-putting. I’d like for him to write a song entitled “I Wish I Had Worked a Day in My Life”. His treatment of a biblical theme (“Adam Raised a Cain”) is trite. Such a great poetic idea, so pitifully written. The pompous dirge “Racing in the Street” has a flat tire from the starting line. I can’t imagine anyone ever shed a tear over this. In “Streets of Fire”, he wants to sound like he’s drunk, with implausible screams that produce a physical autonomic cringe, repeated over and over until he gets it right, which, of course, he never does. This is a hugely flawed album from a solo artist who’s sitting on top of the world. 2/5

I had some familiarity with this album already, but gave it a thorough listen (ok several) and really liked it. Darker than his previous albums, but so good. Adam Raised a Cain and Racing in the Streets are two that I hadn’t paid attention to that I especially liked in addition to the already known singles such as Prove it all Night, Badlands and Darkness. 5

Some songs didn't really stick with me, but for the most part this was a great album. Very very solid. I can't give it anything below a 4.

One of my favorite Springsteen albums, and I have a lot of favorite Springsteen albums. It's edgier and grittier than "Born to Run", but without the bleakness of "Nebraska". Absolutely essential listening, IMO

Bruce springsteen is amazing in that even the albums that don't make it to the stream charts still have songs on them that are great.

As a person who doesn't listen to the Boss this was surprising for me. Interesting that he was so heavily influenced by punk and wanted to move away from the majestic bombast of his previous records into something darker and tighter.

There was an underlying fatigued sadness to the songs that I really enjoyed. My favorite song was Something in the Night.

I love the Americana aesthetic, the lyrical themes of aspirations and disappointments, and the euphoric blend of piano, guitar, organ, saxophone, harmonica, etc.

Not bad, good background listening while working

Better than I thought but not my cup of tea

This fourth album from Springsteen is gritty and melancholy. A few tunes are more up beat like Candy's Room. Yet a tune called Racing In the Street which sounds like it would be up tempo is as melancholy as any. The band is tight, this is the classic E Street Band line-up; Steve Van Zandt on guitar well before he got into acting on The Sopranos; Max Weinberg on drums before he became Conan O'Brien's band leader for 17 years, and Clarence Clemons on sax who is only featured a few times here. The album stands the test of time which many from 1978 don't during an era of music defined by disco. Springsteen is the working class American singer-songwriter and here he defines and refines that role. If albums could be B-sides, this one would be perfect.

Solid album. Admittedly, I am not to familiar with most of Springsteen’s work. This album was full of great storytelling

Really tried to like this one more than I did but couldn't. A lot of the songs had an anthemic feel and great lyrics that really told stories but as soon as 'Badlands' started I just couldn't get past Springsteen's voice. E-Street Band killed it though. I respect the dude's contributions to music and developing the genre of 'heartland rock' but I'd much rather listen to early Tom Petty than this.

Inledningslåten, Badlands, är hoppfull, med stressigt piano och framåtdrivande trummor, precis vad man önskar sig från 70-tals-Springsteen. Här finns allt man behöver, arbetarklasskildringar, episkt berättande, texter om hur berättarjaget åker på Utahs ökenvägar (The Promised Land) i sin Chevy '69 (Racing in the Street). En önskan om äventyr, om ett genuint Amerika där all kärlek och alla svar finns att hitta bara du ger dig ut på vägarna, vilket är precis vad som är Springsteens essens för mig. Passion can be heard on this album, that's for sure. A small complaint is I thought the gap between the quite parts and loud parts were too far. It's effective but I found myself turning the volume up at the beginning and wanting to turn down when the rest of the band came in. Overall a solid album through and through, favourite song is Candy's room.

It was alright, some good stories to be told as you'd expect from Springsteen. Only really liked half the tracks on the first listen though, might need another listen.

It's fine. Bruce Springsteen's singing is the worst part. I was braced to hate it, but listening has been a good time. Still got kind of bored in the second half of the record.

Nice stuff and some particularly cool songs in there. Really liked Factory, even if it's a bit on the nose. The only problem I had was when the mumbling made it impossible to understand what he was saying, I actually had to laugh a few times at just how garbled the lyrics were. Still, some strong classic rock there and glad I listened.

An angry and brooding album from Springsteen and crew. It works well enough and you still get plenty of their signature style but the album does end up feeling like a bit of a slog. The anger and brooding never ends up feeling fully meaningful or even deserved even if its effective on elevating a few tracks.

Good music but I can really only handle Bruce's voice in small doses.

The Boss really just doesn't do much for me. I'd never complain if he was on, but I wouldn't be boppin' along to anything but the hits.

Never listened to a whole Springsteen album. After watching Blinded by the Light (cool 2019 film about a British Muslim kid obsessed with the Boss in the 1980s), I was quite open to hearing more. I can appreciate the craft of this album. "Promised Land" and "Darkness on the Edge of Town" are great well-written songs. Others like "Racing in the Street" are relatively memorable. Sadly, most of the album just washes over me. I've tried it three times, but only the standout tracks really do it for me. I'm not a huge fan of this style of rock music, and not massively struck by Bruce's vocals. Overall, I enjoyed it, and I wouldn't mind hearing another album, but it's a 3.5.

Favourite Song: The Promised Land

The album picks up from where Born to Run left off with the rousing 'Badlands', but listen closer and you will notice that Bruce's lyrics crackle with biblical imagery and religious fervour, this is repeated throughout on the likes of 'Adam raised a Cain' , 'Promised Land' and 'Darkness on the Edge of Town' . Has the Boss found God? Where Dylan was just entering his Fire and Brimstone phase with Slow Train Coming, which acts as a rallying cry for pious action in the material world (and turned off a large proportion of his Liberal base), Springsteen's spiritual focus is an introspective and personal crusade for self actualisation; the song becomes the sacrament, and what magnificent songs. It was also around this time when Van Morrison accused Springsteen (amongst others) of ripping him off and you can certainly hear his influence in the slower piano led numbers like 'Racing in the Street' and 'Something in the Night' which are meditative, hypnotic and transcendent. I told you he had found God.

As great as this is, it doesn't quite hit the heights of it's predecessor (Born to Run) due to a few too many tracks that only hit the above-average mark (Something in the Night, Racing in the Street, Factory). Badlands, Adam Raised a Cain, The Promised Land and the title track are some of Bruce's very best though so it's only a fraction away from hitting full marks. Best track: The Promised Land

Excellent, epic and emotional. Better than Born to Run for me and my first 5* review. There's just something about The Boss that just taps into the working man mindset. Melancholy at times, hopeful and uplifting at others, he just gets what it is to be alive.

Badlands is a good opener, the rest is all a bit ploddy, never quite hitting the relevance button

This was better than I expected. Varied melodies and tempos plus good lyrics make it easy to listen. Some nice songs I hadn't heard before.

Again I like this type od music from 70s, 80s. Bruce has a nice voice, songs are different from each other. Probably better than most of 4 ratings here.

I’m an extremely late bloomer when it comes to ‘The Boss’, but I am very grateful for eventually getting there. He marketed himself extremely well to myself when I watched and listened to his latest offering ‘Western Stars’. An album I have now listened to over and over again. There is a real heritage of this album in that album and that makes this one an instant hit with me. There is an emotive tone to his voice I find hard to describe...yet I doubt I need to. To any Bruce Springsteen fan, they’ve known it for decades and now I do too. The tracks here stir the same emotions I’ve felt from my limited Boss exposure and the voice has hardly changed at all. The best thing about this album and it’s lyrics is they can all tell your very own story if you let them. They are not one dimensional but familiar enough to make you feel as though they were written just for you. Pour yourself a bourbon neat enjoy! 4 Stars!

A pretty good album - can't say I like it as much as Born to Run and his crooning is a bit much at times, but still enjoyable, and come on, its Bruce Springsteen Liked: Badlands, Racing in the Street

Ruwere, iets hardere rocknummers afgewisseld met wat tragere, iets meer pop-achtige nummers. Ik kende nog geen enkel nummer van dit album maar kon het wel smaken

heerlijk, niet mijn favoriete Bruce maar zeker fijn.

It was basically what I expected a Bruce Springsteen Album to be. There is definitely a vibe to Springsteen songs that is different from any other artist’s music and I thought overall this album was pretty good. I love Clarence Clemons’s solos as always! That being said some of the songs do get kind of repetitive and somewhat boring. Favorite songs: Badlands, Racing in the Street, The Promised Land, Prove it all Night. Least favorite songs: Candy’s Room, Streets of Fire. Strong 7/10

Best goed... maar ook geen blijvertje voor mij.

Geen echte fan van The Boss, maar ik kan zijn muziek zeker waarderen. Deze plaat ken ik niet zo goed, maar heeft dezelfde vibe als Born to Run. Goeie nummers over soms pittige onderwerpen maar toch met een hoopvolle ondertoon.

Ugh, it's all so dramatic. Not really for me - couldn't get through quite a few of the songs in full Adam Raised a Cane, Streets of Fire and the Title track were all cool and saved The Boss from a 2 star rating from me

Same as the Foo Fighters Album. I like it a lot but its not as good as I know he can be so there are some missing points there.

Brilliant. Not a huge Springsteen fan but this (and Nebraska) are wonderful.

Not one of my favourites by the boss but few standout tracks and the sound of a band having a great time.

There are some all time greats, The Promised Land and Racing in the Streets. It's really close to a 5, but I don't think it quite to that level for me.

Excellent tunes as always, and some of his best as well. "Adam Raised a Cain" still kicks.

I don’t love his voice, but I don’t mind it either. It’s definitely pretty classic, and not as hard as some stuff, so I liked it pretty well.

Great album, feels very raw and early Bruce. It’s no Nebraska. I love Badlands and the first half of the album, but it kind of falls off after that.

Nice album to listen to. I like music from Bruce Springsteen.

Way way better than Born to Run but still struggle to see the mass appeal. Again it's probably because I'm not a blue jeans wearing factory worker from 1979 mid west America.

I can't Springsteen

I’m so uneducated on Springsteen so this was a welcome “pull”; some good stuff in here, his writing is so mature. He was a couple years younger than me when he made this one, and it was his 4th!

This is another album that I don't have much to say about. It's solid all the way through. There weren't any songs that particularly stood out to me, but it didn't fade into the background while I was listening to it either. I really dig his style 4/5

On the slower more soulful side of Bruce

Not really sure I get the appeal of Bruce. Not my kind of vocalist. Yeah, he's got some hits but everything else is like, whatever. It's like a suede jacket.

3.5/5, probably sounds best after a long day at work, a lot of working class, cog in the machine themes. Standout Tracks: Adam Raised a Cain, Racing in the Street, Darkness on the Edge of Town.

While it does have some filler, the amazing songs here more than make up for it. Streets of Fire might be my favorite Springsteen Song (that ive heard so far at least). Closer to a 3.6 or 3.7
