Reviews (page 13 of 14)

TL,DR. But congrats on 40 years. Once, I called Billy Corgan on Thanksgiving.

never really liked this one.

this Put me in Bad Humour

Can't really get behind the singer, and this overstays its welcome by roughly a whole album.

Never been a great fan of The Smashing Pumpkins, in particular due to Billy Corgan's voice, that does it for some songs, but certainly not for two hours long. I quite liked some songs on Siamese Dream, but when this album came out, and I obtained a copy, I could not bear to listen to it all at once. 30 years later, it's all the same and actually, I found it even more tedious. What a pretentious BS. Yes, there are some classics on this album, ('"Tonight, Tonight", "Bullet With Butterfly Wings", and "1979") but what of the other 25 songs? In the end I can't tell the difference between one song or the other, with a few exceptions ("Galapogos" or "Stumbleine") but my ears hurt because of Billy Corgan's whining, teenage angst and self importance, meh. 2/5

On the upside, this has ambition and mood. It also made me significantly less insecure about singing because I can't do Billy Corgan's voice. On the downside, the mixing feels off (voice way down mby because it sucks). Doesn’t hit like genres it draws on, punk, mid-west, grunge- no thanks. Feels derivative

This settles Smashing Pumpkins as a singles only band for me.

Chiaaaaant

Ok 2/5

I dodnt get through all of disk 1. Not a big SP fan. Dont hate them, just dont listen to them. And so with this, not a terrible album but not a great one for me. There are aspects i like - thw drummer is great, and aspect i think meh - the sound they have seems quite formulaic in some way. I probably ahould finiah this at some point though. Two stars for a good album, not a terrible album but not a great album.

Did remind me of Nirvana but much less screaming. I also think 2 hours is too much.

The Smashing Pumpkins sound like Nirvana if Nirvana made interesting, good music. Bonus points for unique song names. 2 hours was way to long, I really struggled to make it through. 2.4 outta 5

Overblown and pretentious as hell. Yeah, a couple of quite stunning moments, amid a couple of hours of dross.

The gang is rockin’ hard, can’t say I actually liked it but I do appreciate the effort.

It's not a bad album but I just can't cause the mix quality is painful, it sounds muddy and dull with lack of depth. feels like my ears are blocked. listened to remastered 2012 but it didn't help. it was probably done deliberately but i can't agree with this decision

I can hear that it is a great album but I think I don’t like grunge music that much. I only enjoyed the 1979 song, thats a banger. The rest I could not really get in to. 4/10

Way too angsty. The lyrics are pure aimed at teenage boys. Which is a bit gay.

Some good stuff but a lot that was unenjoyable to listen to

Corgan’s voice has always been a huge hindrance for me as I’ve attempted to enjoy this band. Despite this, 1979 has always been one of my favorite 90’s songs so I at least wanted to listen that far. It was rough. I give this one 2 out of 5 stars, and that’s solely because of 1979.

Such an overrated band. The voice is like nails on a chalkboard. Not a fan, despite them having a few OK songs. Those will raise it to a 2.

Not as bad as I expected but still not great

Bit of a bloated mess (2 hours?!). Signifies the beginning of the end for the Pumpkins, as Billy’s creative endeavours only miss the mark further from here. A few highs starkly outshone by absolute mediocrity.

5/10 - typical mid 90s american indie rock, ok but 15 tracks too long, issue with bands realising CDs can be rammed with music

Way. Too. Long. Would've been worth it if Corgan could actually sing.

Ugh, so long. SO LONG. like 2 good songs.

This might have been a 3 but for the length. Definitely some good bits of pumpkin goodness but this was smashed by stretches of unpleasant noise during 8 minute songs.

I find his voice annoying I'm sorry lol

You know, I hated the Pumpkins as a teen, but I didn't mind revisiting this. I mean, I still petered out after hour 1, but I was more mildly bored than horribly annoyed.

*to the tune of No More Parties In LA* "No more 90s alt rock, please god no more 90s alt rock"

2.5 Terrible vocals. Otherwise ok sounding

one had moments but generally too long for me to get into

Yet another case of mediocre music ruined by an annoying male singer, Only song worth listening to is 1979, in an otherwise unbearably long album.

I wanted to enjoy this so much more than I actually did! I owned this double CD as a teenager, and was hoping it was stand the test of time...but nope. Truly a bloated, 'we-need-an-editor' album. Just look at the listens for each track on streaming platforms. The singles on this one have over 25, 50, and 70 (!) times as many listens as the most of the deep cuts. Yikes. Long live Siamese Dream...

Too long

This is like a grunge buffet that just keeps going. Seriously, it’s way too long!

Eh. Wouldn’t listen again

Would have made an okay single album, not as good as what came before.

I tried but it's just not for me

This album is beautifully produced. The drums, guitars, keys, strings...all incredibly done. It would be a 5/5 if it was an instrumental. Unfortunately it's not. One of the worst singers I've ever heard sings over the gorgeous music and ruins almost every song. There is a track called "Muzzle" which got me excited as I thought maybe the lead singers band mates realize they would sound better if they put a muzzle on the lead singer...but no...he is singing on that song too. To make matters worse, this album is 2 hours long!!!

Somewhat familiar band. I might have heard some of their songs back then but wasn't impressed. I am not a fan of the vocal. An OK album.

There are no doubt some great tracks on this album … but it is way too long and by the time I got to the end I’d forgotten them 🤷‍♀️

Long album. Best Songs Tonight, Tonight Bullet With Butterfly Wings Take Me Down 1979

Billy Corgan can’t sing… plus I hear he’s a free market libertarian

I hate the smashing pumpkins

Unpopular opinion, but the heavier songs are much, much, much better than the mellow songs on this record. They allow the drummer to really display his talent, and the crunchy guitars kind of drown out Billy's whine (most of the time). In contrast, everything (lyrics, music, enjoyment) is drowned out by Billy's whine on the mellow/emotional songs, all of which are supremely skippable. In fact, it seems at this point in the band's career, Billy Corgan has decided that the focal point of every song should be his quite frankly subpar vocals. Overall, while the record is ambitious and has a lot of great moments, the enormous run-time and the vocal slop don't just prevent this record from achieving greatness - they make it a genuine disappointment. 2.0/5.0: Disappointing

Just fine

More like Mellon Collie and the Infinite Screeching Started off alright. The guys voice soon pissed me off so bad - was like nails on a chalkboard. I knew 2 of these songs beforehand, can't say I particulary liked them There was no need at all for this album to be 2 hours long. Absolutely no need 2 ⭐️

some good songs but two hours was too long, definitely could have been cut down. billy’s voice can be really hard to listen to

It turns out that one Smashing Pumpkins song in a row is a good time, three in a row is a less good time, and twenty-eight in a row is a war crime.

What an aptly titled album because melancholy is how this album made me feel. The album switches between Alternative/Art-Rock, Grunge, and Heavy-Metal - I just wish they could make up their mind. Ultimately, I found the album boring.

High school drama club over here.

I don't really get the hype

Good until the guy started singing

Never understood the hype. And now that I’ve listened to the whole album I can honestly say that it is not my kind of music

No. Too much noise

I am not a Smashing Pumpkins lover or a hater. For the most part, I found the quality of the album to be really good but I'm sorry - nothing justifies that run time. It is nowhere near engaging enough to be the length of a movie. If you have more songs you want to put out, then make a deluxe like everyone else? Bullet With Butterfly Wings is crazy good though.

i had something to say about the album but that was 1h40 of music ago. i really hate his voice. 1979 is a good song though

Not for me

Honestly pretty juvenile. I feel like the lyrics are super woe is me and Billy corrigan’s voice annoys me. Not a fan and I don’t really get the hype. Not unlistenable, just not good.

Just cos you can write them doesn't mean they need to be on the album. There's some ok mid 90s 'alt rock' tunes swimming alongside the mediocre ones. It's just all a bit too much Billy Corgan in one sitting for my ears. once I laughed at those lyrics for Zero it was quite hard to take the rest of it seriously.

I am very conflicted about this artist. Instrumentals can be very catchy, but the vocals are so grating to my ears. One song was worth repeating, the rest I can't. 2

The fact that Billy Corgan is now a wrestling promoter tells you everything you need to know about his “artistic” philosophy: Make entertainment of the lowest common denominator to appeal to as many dumb people as possible. Given that this album is made up of fairly inoffensive grunge rockers and ballads, I could see having given it three stars if it had been a single album. But nah son, two hours? Two stars. At least the album cover is pretty.

This album appears to be suffered from a bad case of billycorganitus.

Gish, Siamese Dream, and Pisces Iscariot are all far superior albums. Listening again reminded of why I sold this one long ago even though I love Smashing Pumpkins. 1979 and Tonight, Tonight are the only tracks worth saving off this album.

Yet another double album that does not earn its runtime. A lot of the songs are overly long as well, further dragging on what is a rather boring collection of songs. The saving grace is that a small handful of songs are actually worth listening to, else this would've been an easy 1 star rating.

Alotta sounds on this one. I've never been a huge pumpkin guy, this has not changed that. I've once heard this album called one of the greatest double albums of all time. That guy was an idiot.

makes me wonder if I can name “rock” or “alternative” when asked about my favourite music because they are declared to be both and they are both but I didn’t like it and it’s too rocky for me but I thought I liked rock but this sometimes just appears to be noise to me and now I have to be strict again but I don’t wanna be strict I wanna find true love here but it’s hard and also I have to admit that I didn’t even make it through I just listened to half because it’s so long and now Giorgia’s gonna be mad at me for being strict again and I so wanted to like it because i liked the artwork and now i wonder if I actually like rock or just nice artworks please forgive me dear pumpkins but not for me 2,5/5 🎃

Some decent guitar but the frontman really really cant sing

Had some absolute bangers and some absolute ear violators, but I appreciated the genre blending nonetheless.

It is not quite a two star but il never listen to it gain. Pretty tight, some good melodies and song writing here and there, but the songs got me zoning out and focusing on all other stuff than the music

Infinitely too long. Needed so many edits.

This is the sound of Billy Corgan being handed the keys to the studio, the universe, and probably a mirror he never stopped gazing into. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is not so much an album as it is a sprawling monument to self-indulgence. Across two discs and 28 tracks, Corgan tries to be everything at once—angry teen prophet, fragile poet, guitar god, misunderstood genius—and ends up being mostly exhausting. There are a few good songs scattered in the mess (1979, Tonight, Tonight), but you have to wade through a lot of overblown, melodramatic sludge to find them. Corgan’s voice, never the band’s strongest asset, is everywhere—whining, whispering, shouting, often in the same song—and it wears thin fast. There’s no editor in sight, and no one seemed willing to tell him that maybe not every idea needed to be a track. The album jumps from orchestral ballads to punishing riff-fests like a teenager flipping through outfits before a prom they didn’t want to go to in the first place. It’s ambitious, sure, but ambition without focus turns into bloat. For all the grandeur, the emotion feels more performative than profound. It wants desperately to be important, to be the statement of a generation, but the result is something closer to an endless diary entry—loud, overwrought, and full of feelings, but ultimately lacking clarity. A shorter, sharper album might’ve been great. This, instead, is Billy Corgan’s endless guitar solo of a personality on double vinyl.

I don't know if I have the ability to get into this kind of music right now. I need something more chill and tender.

Judged The Smashing Pumpkins unfairly before this. By no means will I be searching this out to listen again, but whereas before I thought I actively disliked pretty much every TSP song, this has a couple of bangers.

This was way too long. I never heard much of The Smashing Pumpkins, and after this album, I don't regret it—nothing there for me.

Not my kind of stuff

Not my cup of tea

OK, a few things to cover off on this one To start with, I really dislike the lead singer's voice. It's so whiny and off-putting. The instruments are quite good though Next, this album does have a fairly consistent mood/tone, but it jumps all over the place genre-wise. One song is a piano backed pop song, the next is heavy metal, then we hit grunge, and on and on. It's impressive that they can write songs that are good and so different sounding, but it makes the experience worse for me as a listener I think if this 2 hour (!) album had been split into 3 albums, each grouped by genre, I would have enjoyed it a lot more. As it is, it's far too long and self-indulgent

Overblown and predictable. The moment when the crunchy guitar will enter was always too obviously signposted. Some nice moments but ponderously paced, much prefer Siamese dream.

Yep, nothing that great on this album. It gets 2 stars for at least being a somewhat decent album. Wouldn't listen to it again though.

Fitting title for my first day back at work after parental leave. A few properly great songs (1979, Tonight Tonight). A lot that is not for me though. Just too pompous, earnest and overlong, all while lacking wit or humour. An Ode To No One? Hmmm.

The favourite album of that one guy you always bump into parties but don't really want to be friends with.

I didn’t really like it. I couldn’t understand any of what the singer was saying and I can’t really relate to any of the songs.

I like the songs where he sings, but the screechy metal stuff is just not for me. Respect the craft of it but find it unpleasant.

Mediocre album and the infinite runtime. I've never had a major issue with Smashing Pumpkins, and as a teenager, I actually liked the hits quite a bit. But then I grew up. 1979 is a legit good song. Unfortunately it's surrounded by 2 hours of fluffy whining that doesn't really make a statement.

Corg and crew deliver exactly what they promise: 121 minutes of aptly-named joylessness.

I thought I'd be giving this a solid three, but an album with 28 songs should have more than 4 bangers. Most of it is pleasant but not memorable. I saw this tour and they only played 16 songs for the show including the encores. That should have been the max number for the album as well.

Starts pretty nicely with that intro and strings, but soon we enter well known territory. Bands like these are make or break with the singer and I can't stand his voice.

I've concurred that life is too short to listen to a 2-hour album that sounds like this. I get that the theme is sadness (that's the pun of the title, right?) but it was just too much, and too long. Did I only listen to the first half? Yes. Is that cheating where this list is concerned? Possibly.

Jonkinlainen saavutus mutta levynä melkein mahdottomuus. Bullet With Butterfly Wings: kova. Kokonaisuus: loputon. 2,5

I listened to one side and that was enough,.I am sure they have many people who love the smashing pumpkins, but it was too long and inconsistent for me, a lot like use your illusion 1&2 it could have made a great single album

Not for me!

Is this some kind of antique MCR? Not for me 🫨

I've long been ambivalent about The Smashing Pumpkins. The hits have nostalgia value, and the line "despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage" is still a great line. But I'm just not very emo when it comes down to it. Probably does deserve a spot on this list.

This album is almost operatic in a certain way. I like the vibe and the story tellling where it exists, but Billy Corgan’s voice literally ruins the entire thing for me though. It’s metallic and whiny. Standout tracks are “1979” and “Zero”.

Did I just get yelled at for 2 hours? As someone who grew up in the 90's I recognize at least 4 of the 28 songs! I would probably need to give the album more time to fully appreciate it, but due to the "mellon collie and infinite sadness" of adult life, I cannot. Keep those 4 songs coming though, wicked cool!

A fair bit of variation between tracks on this album, but I think the reason that I really only thought I liked We Only Come Out At Night, for example, was because so many of the other tracks were such a slog. Also a double album is never the easiest thing to listen to, at more than 2 hours this is definitely at least twice as much Smashing Pumpkins than I needed to hear. A few very 90s-sounding tracks in here. I'm sure a lot of this was on the Daria soundtrack, if I could be bothered to look it up.

There are a few listenable songs scattered throughout the two mostly unbearable hours of this double album. Do not recommend.

i was excited to listen to this one but the further i got into it the more i just wanted it to end. ugh. maybe i just dont like the smashing pumpkins that much.

Too long. My ears hurt.

I don't know if it's a work of art or a bloating piece of crap. There are a bench of interesting things from a musical point of view (but hey, if you deliver two hours of music that might be expected?), but it's way too long, way too pompous, the production is not really good and doesn't really do justice to the instruments (but it probably helps to hide Corgan's voice), and Corgan's voice is... well, Corgan's. Keep the good songs, make it a regular album, and it might be good. But this? Ugh.

I think my review is bias, because I don't like Billy Corgan. But the hits are good, and the output is crazy. If you like this kind of sound, this album is PACKED full of song. But overall this isn't for me

Glad to try it again but about the same as last time: nice to listen to, but all sounds the same and goes on forever

The album is too long, some songs I clearly liked, but it is very long, the truth is, a little difficult to listen to and concentrate on. 2.5

too long, didn't like the vocals, some OK music dotted around

Love the name and album art. I can appreciate the album, but I probably won’t be going back to it

This seems the point when the band went from kinda interesting to a bit boring. Egg headed ghost like annoyance, too much production.

Terrible, just drones on and on and on. Smashing Pumpkins never really managed to replicate their peak which was Siamese Dream.

Only listened to the first 5-6 songs but I just don’t like it. It’s also way too long with both discs (2 hours). Anyway it’s just not my kind of music.

If anyone else in the world with a different voice than this lead singer, was the lead singer I think I could enjoy these songs but since that's not the case only two stars first songwriting and interesting Melody

The instrumental backing is lovely The singing is unbearable

I really don’t think there is anything unique at interesting about this album. The music is generic and the songs are too long.

2/5 Some nice intrumentals in there but I didn’t like the vocals.

it’s a 2 hour smashing pumpkins album. a few songs are admittedly cool - especially when they don’t sound like themselves. unfortunately it’s still a 2 hour smashing pumpkins album and it’s tough for that to be good

Billie corgan's voice could grate cheese. 2 stars cuz I kinda like the roller coaster song

Tried this album too many times. Only a few good songs so not worth it and nowhere close to Siamese dream

It’s sooooo long and my favorite track is Tonight, Tonight so there’s a lot to get through after that

Nostalgic album that reminds me of the 90s but not super my vibe

https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/1bz7v49/billy_corgan_rides_a_rollercoaster/

billy corgan sucks for a million different reason but one of the main reasons is that his delivery surely inspired the likes of gerard way and other similarly SHIT emo music. so that alone is a crime against humanity as far as i’m aware. the music is good!!!! his voice and terrible vibes really ruin it which is really too bad. i actually liked the slower songs better because that’s more my vibe re: annoying man voice…the faster/more metal songs are too emo-adjacent! fav tracks: beautiful; lily (my one and only)

"Emptiness is loneliness, and loneliness is cleanliness / And cleanliness is godliness, and God is empty / Just like me" oh shut the fuck UP!!! honestly the more metal songs were much more listenable to me than the indie whiny ones. emilia recommended putting myself in the mindset of a teenage boy when listening to this which i think is apt as i cannot take this seriously as an adult and/or beautiful woman...

Certainly not wrong about ‘infinite’. There’s so many songs to wade through here. I got bored after about 7. Plus you have the constant, painful Billy Corgan screech and whine to contend with. Some nice symphonic elements and 1979 is on here but overall getting through this double album is completely torturous.

Left it playing in the backround while working. I get Blind Melon and The Smashing Pumpkins confused so at first I was excited about the album, then realized, no, it's not who I thought it was. Then I read the review about Cartman and now I can unhear it LOL. and the "Despite all my rage..." line reminds me more of Weird Al's Alternative Polka than Bullet with Butterfly Wings. I don't hate the album but not something I'll listen to again.

Long. Way too long. The bangers were bangers, but a lot of it just felt like filler. Could have been 2 albums one succesful, and one not.

Way too long of an album. And I can't believe there were so many songs that were already cut! Why not just make multiple albums? Does the saying "throw enough wet paper at a wall and eventually something will stick" apply here? Sure there's some really good songs in here, some of their best singles (1979, for instance). But 2 hours for an album is absurd. Now... for my review. I can imagine if I were a teenager listening to this for the first time, I would probably absolutely love this album. The mixture of angst and sadness pretty much describes a lot of what teenagers are going through and also describes a lot of songs on this album. I loved the intro piano. I wish there were more songs like that, even with singing. In fact, a lot of the slower sections in this album are very well put together. There's a lot to like about this album, but the length of it is such a turn off, I just wanted it to end. 2/5

if you stuck to the hits and a handful of the other songs on here you'd have one of the tightest no skip albums of the 90s instead of a double album full of some of the most forgettable music of the decade

This album was so so so SO long for no reason. The music wasn't nearly good enough to justify the length. It put me in a bad mood, and I ended up listening over the course of a few days. Would not recommend.

please no more double albums. there are 2 songs I enjoyed on here

this was one decent album worth of music followed by 1.5 more albums. one additional star for Tonight Tonight

A slow death by the 5th song.

This album was good just not for me

I like their sound. And with the hit-singles "Tonight, Tonight", "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" and especially "1979"‼ they had the basis for 40 mindblowing minutes. But a double album with almost two hours running time is a task much greater artists have already failed. And so have the Smashing Pumpkins for me too! One star down for not cutting it down to the (great) essence. 2,5

for a first album to have a double album says a lot to me. There are those songs on there that I know from main stream but Im not really into his voice that much. The album is long when you don't care much about the sound.

The good of this album, I really liked it. When it was good it was great for me. There was a lot of mid to bad songs but that’s just my opinion and I don’t think they were unlistenable bad, just not my type bad. Regardless, I went in not knowing any songs or have listened to any previous album of theirs & came out pretty impressed. High 2, could’ve been a 3 but 2 is fair here.

Just not for me.

This album is twice as long as it should have been. There are too many songs that add nothing but noise to it. Some good songs here but overall it is 2 stars or D+ for me.

First of all, clocking in at over 2h, this is really too long. I'm getting an album to listen to every 24h - this album is over a twelfth of that period! On my first play, I quite like this album. Whether it gets more plays depends on what I'm doing today! As far as I can tell, as a body of work it's pretty mediocre. Might have been better with a bit more quality control.

Just not my jam.

Amazing first two songs then turned into something I did not enjoy

Can see the appeal, but not for me.

Couple bangers - got bored between

Just all round a bit too much of everything going on to enjoy it

"Zero" has great lyrics and "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" is iconic. This album def has a place in 90's grunge, with the unmistakable nasely squeaky voice of Billy. It's a long album, and I don't want to put myself through that again. It was a bit much. As far as enjoyment level, 2 star.

Blooooooooooaaaaatttttteeeeeddddd

was enjoying the first couple of tracks then was hit with some crappy 80s heavy metal boring shit. A couple of really good tracks but too much crap

Disclaimer: I rated Siamese Dream at 5/5 and I really love it. It managed what this record fails to do: deliver good music and shut up. I feel like Billy really believed he's something else and tried to make himself a monument. He failed, this sucks (with a few exceptions such as 1979). I have the comfort of having English as my second language so I can just tune out and not listen to the horrible, horrible lyrics. Otherwise, I'd have probably rated it at 1/5. I feel like the people I respect rating it at 5/5 are only doing it because of nostalgia, there's no way someone actually enjoys it front to back.

Fairly heavy guitars and vocals

I will be waging a war against all bands from the 90s with whiny lead singers.

Could have been a 3 but it's just too damn long

Why oh why is this so long? Why is it so revered? Why does every good song (of which there are a few) get immediately followed by a horrible stinker? The good songs, such as 1979 and By Starlight are really, really great. But it's 28 songs long and on a lot of them Corgan just ruins everything like a skinny, pompous Mr Blobby.

not for me. the music is fine but billy corgan's voice grates. and also the music is something way too melodramatic too

Puffffffff...

Rock, 1995 -> 2

I do not get the appeal of this album at all. A 2 hour 2 disc snore fest and some of the worst singing I've heard. Not a fan of Smashing Pumpkins, even their big hit off this album "Bullet With The Butterfly Wings" is disappointing. I can't give it a one star cause it's not as bad as other albums I've given one star on this list but man does this suck.

🎧This album is 2 hours long. Much of it is whiny crap. Much of it is just plain boring. Here Is No Why and Bullet With Butterfly Wings are terrific songs. Shame Billy Corgan couldn’t trim the fat, there’s probably a halfway decent record in here.

Meh. Light screamo rock

Interesting riffs and musical ideas, clearly acts as a predecessor of deftones orchestrated, calm style of metal, it’s just way too long and corgans whiny vocals suck.

I'm only forty-two albums in this challenge, and I've already gotten two Smashing Pumpkins albums (supposedly it's the last of them on this list—what a relief!). I'm so tempted to give this one the lowest rating, but at the same time, I do understand why people love this kind of sound; it's 90s alt-rock at its best. ...I just really hate 90s alt-rock, I guess. Anyway, I think I made it clear in my review of Siamese Dream just how much I despise this vocalist. He's got to be one of the worst singers who's ever made it big. He's bearable when he's not shouting and/or whining, but that rarely ever happens, which is why it's really hard for me to enjoy anything by this band. The instrumentation is at times really good, even though it mostly falls into the repetetive category, but that guy ruins every single song he opens his mouth on. As for the compositions themselves—they're just okay, not that groundbreaking at all, which is why I don't understand why this band is being listed right next to the likes of Nirvana when they're really just another generic alt-rock 90s band. I will say though that they must have put a lot of effort into this album, but it's just way too bloated. I could see myself enjoying this a bit more if they cut out all the unnecessary filler. Siamese Dream was similarly exhausting, but at least it was a normal-length album, while this seemed to go on forever. There's supposed to be a concept somewhere in there, but I guess I missed it while forcing myself to finish it. 2 stars (only for the couple of songs that didn't make me want to smash the skip button)

A triple LP, GTFOH. I can't say I enjoyed this, the entire middle is total rubbish and many of the front and end songs aren't polished or good enough to revisit. How did Billy Corgan even become a singer? Are there people who actually like this voice? Everything he touches feels contrived. He's trying too hard to be dark, he's trying to write meaningful lyrics and they fall flat, he's not trying to grate off all your skin with his vocals but he does. I don't like this album because I don't even really like their hits. The title also sucks. My chore is complete.

Less melodic and less melancholic than I recalled. And more smash the world — which given the right mood might have been better

I would've liked this more if it had been released as two separate albums. As a double album the second half dragged after the first.

I didn’t like this but I’m just so glad it wasn’t as I initially thought from the deluxe version 6 hours long

I enjoyed parts of this. the is a couple of songs on here that i would deffo lissen to again ( Tonight tonight and Bullet with butterfly wings) however it was far too long as a final note the the album title is perfect for this.

I’m sure it’s not what these guys were going for but there was some funny shit on this album. Emptiness is loneliness And loneliness is cleanliness And cleanliness is godliness And God is empty just like me Mary had a little lamb Her face was white as snow And everywhere that Mary went I was sure to go Now Mary's got a problem, and Mary's not a stupid girl Mary's got some deep shit, and Mary does not forget It didn’t save the album but it at least got me smiling politely

Two hours and five minutes is too long to listen to Smashing Pumpkins. This record is bloated and beyond the singles there’s not much to write home about. Two stars but one star is for nostalgia.

2h viistettään.. paskaa... Muutama hyvä biiis lopusssa vaivan väärti... Kiitos.. hyväö musiikkia.m heh..

4/10 - The second song seemed decent enough so I was expecting an ok album. But its been pretty bad after that. The songs are so screamy and not enjoyable imo. Nearing the end of the first disc it chilled out a bit. Straight into disk 2 its equally as bad. For instance tales of a scorched earth is absolutely awful. I went back and relistened to the most popular songs and they were better but still not fantastic.

First of all, this was 2 hours because it had 2 disks. Secondly, it sounded very generic and it was a bit meh. There were some interesting guitar solos here and there, but overall not very exciting.

I appreciate the musicality, the arrangements, the guitar playing. But the lead singer’s voice is like nails and a chalkboard to me and makes me want to punch something.

This took fucking 3 days to finish. Bloated as fuck. There's no good reason this is two hours long. I'm giving it a 2 which is such a shame because there's some absolute ripper tracks in here. But those unfortunately represent .01% of the total ruintime. I misspelt runtime there - but my error absolutely adequately describes listening to this full record. It has a ruintime. It strips a very serious amount of time from your day. My time has been ruined. My algorithm is forever going to think I love Smashing Pumpkins, because I've now got a Lord of The Rings length of listening time with them. Fuck.

The instrumental songs were gorgeous. The slow songs were pretty good. The rest was nails on a chalkboard.

Not good, not bad; guess I’m not a SP fan. Track after track of same nasally, whiney, high pitched delivery. Not really original.

they've got their sound together more than on Siamese Dream, in that most of the guitar solos figure out how to make the shred thing more of a noise collage (like all the other grunge bandwagon jumpers had already figured out how to do). there's still at least one extra tacky solo, on the track called "Fuck You (An Ode to No One)" which is a perfect title for what that song is (terrible). they show off a little more range with varied instruments (sounds like a big recording budget more than musicality) and styles. you can hear more that doesn't sound like a thousand layers of the same guitar smashed into paste, but it's heavy on compression & noise gate that makes it fatiguing to listen to. "Bodies" and "Tales of a Scorched Earth" are very nu-metal titles for very nu-metal songs that sound like they wanted to be a little more groovy & cool like sludgey grunge metal. I feel a little bad accusing these Pumpkins of copying the grunge wave so often, because I don't think that's what they were going for on the whole. it's just the rest of their vision isn't interesting enough to comment on. "The Wall for Generation X" sounds exactly right for how much this sucks. I like 1979 a lot. music: hated. (⌐■_■)

Two starts but only for nostalgia for my high school years.

I feel weird giving this a 2 because the album is obviously so good. And there are more than a few songs I really like. But it’s long. Corgan said he aimed the album at people 14 to 24, and I felt that. The album was so long I almost quit this 1001 albums thing because I finally listened to the whole thing after many months of failed attempts. It’s like 2 hours of music.

this is a really mixed bag, where some tracks are really good and others are really bad. also the intro tracks are just piano on a rock/grunge album??? way too long and the vocalist really hates hitting notes.

Long as hell man. Bullet w butterfly wings will intermittently be in my head going forward, but other than that not too notable

Masterful tour de force. Kinda lost me at the growlcore B-sides. But to be honest with myself, I'm just not that excited about Smashing Pumpkins. Respect this album a lot, but for my personal listening enjoyment, it's two stars.

1979 - one of those songs I can never remember.

Not as bad as the last smashing pumpkins I listened to, but I still wanted it to end. Only listened to the first disc. A couple tracks were alright.

Not my favorite. Sounded like loud indie rock. I’d give it 2.5 stars.

Must be a generation thing. I can see why people love this album just does nothing for me.

Definitely not my deal. Aside from Nirvana who I appreciated for their contribution to the evolution many sub genres of rock, the 90s grunge did not sit well with me…likely generational as I need more than just angst.

Voice is whiny and grated on my nerves. Not a classic in my view

yeah sorry not a fan of this one. it's not bad but lord it should be illegal to have an album this long with not that much going on. everything on it is really middle of the road with the exception of a handful of songs that are sort of interesting. but nothing really grabbed me at all. i just found myself bored for two hours. honestly it felt a little like a waste of two hours for me :( sorry :(

Grundgier than I expected. Seemed to lack direction.

Right off the bat I didn't like the lead singer's voice and that's kind of a problem. I agree with one reviewer's apt description that he sounded like Cartman from South Park trying to sing. Then I got annoyed when I discovered that this album was over 2 hours long! If I enjoyed the music that would have been a good thing but I just couldn't get into this.

1979 is all I can listen to and enjoy unfortunately.

I like 1979….

I was never a huge fan of The Smashing Pumpkins. It's not a negative thing. It's just that while other people were listening to them, I was listening to somebody else. I didn't get any feels from their stuff. I didn't connect. I can listen to them, but...they're OK.

While this evokes feelings of nostalgia, I can’t really stand Billy Corgan’s singing and honestly a lot of the songs sound the same. Reminds me of my annoying older sister pretending she was an edgy teenager in the 90s. Also, it’s unnecessarily long. Tonight, Tonight rips though.

It's been a good album, lasted too long for my liking but some of the songs were good, others not much, maybe I will listen to sum of it in the future but no all the album.

There are a handful of quite good songs on this album, but mixed in with some other stuff that I'm not terribly fond of. This would definitely be an album that, if I were to buy it, would prefer to buy only the songs that I'm actually interested in and skip the rest.

I remember this album was a big deal back when music was a big deal to me. I didn't buy it because it was expensive and I didn't think I'd like many of the songs other than 1979 and Bullet with Butterfly Wings. Tonight, Tonight was on MTV in heavy rotation and it's fine but I knew most of the album was post-grunge, reverb, wall of sound that is grating to listen to. Then you add in Corgan's singing which at times I really enjoy and other times I really don't enjoy. I certainly don't want to hear the song where he is straight up screaming. I think I'll only come back for 2 songs, but those two songs are good enough to save this from getting 1 star only

Whiny McWhinerson

some solid moments, but ultimately not for me

Eyeshadow

Ahhhh damn me, It did not registered the review I wrote so now I have lost it all. To make the tale short: Thought it was another band, but no, first time listening. And it simply is. I got bored by the middle of the second disk. Some people might like it but it is not for me. 2/5

Sorry! Not for me, I'm afraid! I found it overlong, overblown and I really couldn't get on with Corgan's voice. The 'grungey' bits sounded like they were just trying too hard!

Just not my thing tbh. Lead singer's voice is meh

Not for me

I have always LOVED Siamese Dream. So I bought Mellon Collie the week it was released; but I've never liked it. There is WAY too much mediocrity here to truly appreciate the two or three amazing moments. And those amazing moments were played SO much on the radio in 1995, that listening to the album was just about exploring the mediocrity. It also comes across as a bit artsy (c'mon...Mellon Collie?) - too much of it sounds affected, gimmicky and/or half-baked. Corgan's clearly trying to expand his sound; which is laudable. But the less grungy the backing tracks get, the more they're ruined by their exposure of his voice - revealing his jarring and incongruously-timed transitions between whisper, vocalfry, failed attempts at real singing, and mediocre James Hetfield impressions. Ultimately, I'm frustrated by all of it. If he'd focused on making the best one-third of the songs here great (instead of making the Wall for Gen X - give me a break) he could have made a great album. Bullet With the Butterfly Wings is so great, though, that it earns the album two stars all on its own.

To long, ok to listen some songs in a playlist but couldn't finish the record

Just not my usual vibe. Enjoyed Zero and Love.

Lyrics and majestic power chords are fine but I'm just not a fan because of Corigans grating vocals. Also found the mastering to be very lifeless and "made for car radio"

This was good to start off with but just would not end any he last 1/4 just sucked. I wanted to rate this highly but just can’t.

2 hours? Triple LP? Come on.

I hate Billy’s voice so much.

Somewhere in a parallel reality is a 5/5 album that sounds exactly like Mellon Collie but sung by someone not Billy Corgan.

Not my type of thing. I liked some of the songs but most of it blended together.

so the first song was so so so lovely and i was excited to listen to this, thinking i would love it so much. but sadly, i just didn’t, i hated most of it. there were like two songs i liked, the first i love, and then that one about being 33 or something which just sounds like journey to the past from anastasia so i will have to look into it. the beginning of the second song is so epic, i love that too, i actually like that song a lot. unfortunately i have to be fair and can’t rate it high for one or two songs… sorry.

Inoffensive.

I always thought they were overrated in the 90s, and this certainly didn't change my mind.

This was alright! Again the vocals didnt do it for me! I dont know. There were some interesting songs but for a lack of ability to express myself - the vibes were off. I hate to give something a 2 but aside from a few songs where there was max indie rock nostalgia I wasn't really feeling it. And to be honest, I couldn't finish it. I still have the tail end of the second side left. Will I finish it? We'll find out!

While I never owned any Smashing Pumpkins albums, this band was a major part of the ambient sound backdrop of my college years. It’s familiar, but I don’t think I’ve ever sat down with this album before. For one thing, it’s too long. But also the grunge scene wasn’t really my thing then and it still isn’t. I can appreciate the album but once is more than enough and I really had to stop myself from giving up on it as it dragged on. Galapogos was a bright spot, 1979 lived up to my memory of it, Stumbleine was a surprise winner, and I’ve always loved the cover art. But a lot of the other songs aren’t memorable and a couple, like Tales of a Scorched Earth and X.Y.U., are ear-splittingly bad. After listening to the first several songs I had settled on a 3, but now that I’m blissfully at the end of the whole album I’m dropping it to a 2 for unnecessary length and whininess. I see that Amazon is offering to play me an EXTENDED version of this album that is almost SIX HOURS LONG and no thank you.

Meh, didn’t finish

A couple bangers on this album but this is simply too much music. Maybe if you're a Smashing Pumpkins stan you would rage for this album but like at least 20 of these songs could be removed and it would be a good album. And I really don't mean to be judgmental because I really do like some of these songs but 2 hours is a long time to listen to Billy Corgan's voice. It's the first and hopefully only DNF for me.

Meh, too long

Dude singing sounds like Cartman but like two songs where good sorry this is a shitty review I’m on a time crunch

I liked it, more variety than I knew they had I will be rating with 1 = wouldnt be mad to listen again 3= would actively choose to listen again 5 = have saved it i think this gets a two?

Yllättävän hyvä lenkkialbumi, tosin kahden tunnin kesto oli aika päätähuimaava. Kuuntelin albumin osissa, mutta silti vähän ähky. Tuntui puuttuvan kokonaan ”punainen lanka”

5/10 not wild about it.

48/100

Some good songs, but a lot of average junk, and it felt like it would never end.

Too much filler

SOs -- Tonight, Tonight - 1979 - Bullet With Butterfly Wings

Probably not a bad album in itself, but this was a turning point in the Smashing Pumpkins sound to go from an amazing alternative and independant rock style to a very commercial one that even radio stations would play. Far less original, definitely not as great as they used to sound.

Not that smashing. Best track is the opener before any vocals. A generous 2.

Eh .........

This isn't my favorite, and the album taking about 7 years to finish didn't help. Definitely thought I'd enjoy it more.

2Hrs is a really long album. There are definitely songs I enjoyed but as a whole it felt like it really dragged on.

Album had glimmers of pleasantry amidst fields of cacophony

Much like Puddle of Mudd, the only good songs on this album were the ones that received airplay. Dismal, whiny, and self-absorbed pablum.

Fine, like all albums of this length I think that there is a lack of focus that my personal favourites have

Tonight Tonight might be a good song if someone else was singing, but I really dislike Billy Corgan's voice. 28 songs of this I am supposed to listen to! Does it really need to be over 2 hours long? I'll cut you a deal, Billy; half the songs. First 13 + 1979 seeing as that was a hit. This is a 3 musically. Taking a half point off for the unnecessary length, and half off for Corgan's god-awful voice.

Not a fan

Like drowning in a nasal cloying mist for 2 hours with 3 or 4 gulps of good clean air.

So, yeah. A bit indulgent. Not sure if I'd consider a 28 track record with four hits to be a great accomplishment. Imagine if it had been trimmed down to a dozen tracks... including some of the more interesting transitions and musical parts, plus the four hits. Now that would be a record! I must also admit that I don't like the politics of the front man at all either. Art is difficult to separate from the artist. Some of the tunes blend together, which is to be expected with 28 tracks. My overall impression is indulgent, too many tracks that are filler...

I just can’t take that voice.

I have heard of the Pumpkins, but never really heard their music. A couple of great tracks to start this album, but then it deteriorated into i a bit of a mess. The nasly vocals didnt help, bur i found it a hard listen

Wanted to like this but not for me

Loved this band before they did this - miserable droney shite

to stjerner

Too long

Nope. Don't like the music, too hardrock with unoriginal guitar noise . Mostly i Hate the singers voice

Would have been 3 stars but this was absolutely unacceptably long

Lost interest about halfway through; how is a two hour runtime justified when there's no clear throughline?

Never really got this band

Not as great as a whole. Some real bangers here though.

This thing was 2hrs but it felt like way longer, just a completely bloated album. Some interesting instrumentals throughout. Didn't enjoy this at all.

Personal Enjoyability (out of 40): 13 Consistency of Quality (out of 25): 11 Keeps Interest (out of 25): 6 Album Flow (out of 10): 8 Overall 38/100 ★★ Quick Review: Disappointed with this album. Loved Siamese Dream growing up but never gave this album a chance up until now. Unfortunately this album majorly suffers from the double album curse of the quality being spread too thinly. Far too much filler and is only saved by the singles.

If there ever was an album hindered by its length, this is possibilty it. My feelings would not be near as scathing if it was half the length, even if that half contained only my least favourite songs. What I got was okay, but oh it was so much mediocrity. So prevalent. So droning. The songs became a mesh that just collided into a slurry and the only thing that my brain can process is that one "meme lyric" about being a rat in a cage. I sat on this finished album for a good hour, digesting it, wondering if the mere behemoth of its length alone would warrant such a low rating. I do not know if I'm being too kind or too grumpy with my appraisal.

Muy lento para mi estilo

A couple of songs I liked

Not my sound for leaning too heavily into Metal, but of the 28 tracks, Standouts are Tonight, Tonight, Zero, Bullet With Butterfly Wings, 1979, Thru The Eyes of Ruby, and Stumbleine.

Didn't like too much of it. There are some good songs, but I mean some shit is gonna stick from 28 fucking songs. Fuck off with this 2 hours bullshit

I don't even know how to rate this. That Tonight, Tonight's voice is totally unlistenable, heavier tracks are pretty average, and then calmer songs are somewhat pleasant, but it may be because I've heard them hundreds of times in toks. I was not keeping track of how many songs are in each category, so I'll just assume most of them weren't good

DESPITE ALL HIS RAGE I STILL KEEP MY GIMP IN A CAGE

I never liked this. This listen did not change my mind. My current standard for ratings is that if it is better than Bongo Rock it gets three stars. I concede here in the notes that this album is, but I’m rating it two stars anyway. They’re lucky they aren’t getting one star for not really being better than my only one star rating, Afghan Wigs.

First and last impressions: whiny. Really, really whiny. The vocals are tough to get through, and though the instrumentals are good, it's not enough to save the droning that goes on.

Bo-ring

No matter how many times I’ve tried, I just can’t get through this album. I said this when we listened to Siamese Dream, but I don’t care for this record. I think all the success of that previous record—which is so much more immediate, raw, and urgent than anything here—went straight to Mr. Corgan’s noggin. Sure, there are some great pop songs. But I find the string arrangements cheesy, Billy’s sneering croon far too sharp and bare, and the thematic content annoyingly twee. Maybe I’ve just heard these songs on KROQ too much in my 30 years. But still, having liked what the Pumpkins turned in with Siamese Dream, I find the mainstream, grunge-pop, alt-important sound of Mellon Collie to be a major misdirection. And I also find no reason why this should be a triple album. It’s far too long. Many songs here that should have been B-sides. The 6-hour reissue is just ridiculous. It makes me like the album even less. As does the fact that the vinyl version of the album has an entirely different track order. I really only like the straight up pop numbers. The rest is just not good. I’m borderline 1/5 but will bump one point basically just for “1979,” which I think this an important cut in the history of indie/alt rock and is not only listenable, but enjoyable too, no matter how many times I’ve heard it.

Impossible album. Really difficult to get my head around. It's long, so -1 star for its absurdity. It's monotonous. It feels like one long dream sequence, almost trancelike. I LOVED some of the songs, they were so precious, and for a few minutes there I felt like I really got what they were going for. But it's just way too gratuitous for me to want to return that much, 2/5

17th April 2023 Listened during the day while working from home after Sav’s stag. Seb staying an extra night after the weekend. Sequence and the Wheel. Not a great listen when you’re riddled with post stag and work anxiety. 2.5 if I could.

Tea Deus and the Finite Patience

their style is pretty neat but this mans voice is super annoying and the album has no reason to last for two whole hours

It’s just as bloated as I remember the record.

TWO chuffing hours? No thanks Billy, mate. I only knew the tracks 1979 and Tonight before listening to the album in full. Both are pleasant and plod along in a nice sensitive pop kinda way. The rest of the album was a racket. I bailed after track 9. What US alt artists lack in humour they certainly make up for in stodge.

I haven’t been super into these guys but I feel a little more positive to em after this it’s just not my style tho

Yikes, 2 full hours. It contains a few good tunes, but there are a lot that seem more like the lead singer needs to stop smoking before he loses his voice.

This would have been a solid middle of the road album, if a bit CW teen drama background music-y, but there was no reason this should have been a 28 song album and over two hours long. Instead it became extremely boring and one-note and I resented it's length. Cool album title though!

Ugh, I just cant stand Billy Corgan for more than 1 song in a row. 2 hours of him singing was an extremely painful experience. I do like the instrumental but his voice just ruins it.

Каким-то образом там затесались и акустические композиции (Take me Down, Stumblein или Farewell and Goodnight, например), как ни странно - неплохие.

There are some bangers on here but you know the rules…way too much Smashing Pumpkins here for this reviewer

Was on my list to relisten for a while. I'm giving it two stars because it is very front loaded and then just seems to drag on for an extra hour. 1 hour is very solid though.
