excellent!
One of the best alternative rock albums of 90s. So much energy and in the same time some calmness like in the song To Forgive. And, of course, the legendary 1979, the anthem of youth
Blast from my high school past
Liked this one quite a bit! They are kind of nostalgic for me, and 1979 is one of my favorite songs. Recognized a few others, and even found a few new ones to add to my library! Cool album art too.
Amazing.
Smashing
Break down, 1979
Love it! So many great songs. Fave songs "1979", "Tonight, Tonight", "Zero", "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" and "XYU" 5/5
A high point in 90's rock (and Smashing Pumpkin's career).
I've listened to Siamese Dream about a thousand times but I don't know if I've ever listened to this album, both sides, all the way through. Side one starts off nicely with the title track, a lovely instrumental, mostly piano piece that flows perfectly into Tonight, Tonight - perhaps their most artful and skillful song with its orchestral backing. And while it abruptly turns into heavy grunge at song three, I don't mind at all because the next few songs - from Jellybelly to Zero to Here Is No Why to Bullet with Butterfly Wings - is just incredible. Hard, gritty guitars, pounding drums, angsty lyrics. Grunge perfection. And there's still 8 songs to go on side one and it just keeps humming along - favorites are An Ode to No One (pulsing), Galapogos (sweeping like Tonight, Tonight), Muzzle (crunchy, a well known single), and Porcelina... (another sweeping tune). But this is a double album, which is ambitious but also dangerous if both sides don't hold up - might've nailed it with the best in just one album. And this album is a bit of that, as the back half of side two lags a bit. But the opening 6 song sequence is almost as good as the opening 6 song sequence on side one, with 1979 and Thirty-Three (softer) alternative classics and Where Boys Fear to Tread, Bodies, and Tales of a Scorched Earth more grungy goodness. Side one is without a doubt a 5. Side two is about a 4, but definitely better than a 3. And I'm rewarding the ambition of a double album with a 5. This is a classic from the brief grunge era.
A masterpiece of 90's sound. Captures the anger, angst and complications of a twenty-something in that decade with walls of lush instrumentation produced by singer Corgan himself. It is a long and ambitious double LP, but unlike some projects, it flows from mood to mood, emotion to emotion, without ever feeling like it overstays its welcome. Furious angry guitars and vocals give way to delicate acoustics and soft melodies by Corgan, Iha & co. Deserves every bit of critical acclaim it has received, and sounds every bit as fresh today as it did nearly 30 years ago.
It’s impressive how, for as long as this album is, that it can maintain such a high level of quality across the range of rock from hard (Jellybelly, Bullet With Butterfly Wing), through pop (1979) to the softer side (Stumbleine). I was already listening to the hits off it all the time, but I’m very happy to have been introduced to the rest of it
I can't be objective about this. This is one of those albums from my early teens that burrowed its way inside me and became part of my DNA. I could no sooner give it a fair rating than I could rate myself, or my adolescence, or what it means to grow up. Not every song on this album is a 5/5 -- honestly, not every song on this album is even good. Some of them seem to delight in their own ugliness. But the *variety* of music here; the ridiculous, laughable, incredible scope of it; the giddy soaring highs and the miserable vacant lows - none of the songs sounds remotely the same. I can't not give it a 5! This is less a collection of songs and more of an album of important moments to me. And there are so many of them. The defiant battle cry of "We'll crucify the insincere tonight" from Tonight, Tonight that wouldn't be out of place in an MCR song; the escalating bridge in Here is No Why that begs you to scream along; "Destroy the mind / destroy the body / but you cannot destroy the heart," which should be melodramatic dreck but feels as essential as marching orders; "Rescue me from me," perhaps the most self-aware Billy Corgan has ever been in his life; the snarling, vicious "Love is suicide" refrain in Bodies and the jacknife whiplash of Thirty-Three's sugar-spun "I know I'll make it / Love can last forever," right after it; the, again, very self aware "Suffer my desire" from In the Arms of Sleep; 1979, kicking off the slow march to the end of the album with the kind of sun-soaked, melancholy (ha!) nostalgia for things you may not even have experienced yourself; the almost silly Beautiful and Lily (My One and Only) and what I can only call a group lullaby on the last track. God, it's crazy. I love it so much. Unfortunately, it was also written by Billy Corgan, who by all accounts seems to be one of the most personally unpleasant people on the planet and has the political opinions to match. Maybe that's part of this album's appeal to me - I keep trying to crack the nut of how such a miserable, hateful prick could've made something so perfect. Maybe he poured out his heart and soul into this album and just... left them there. How do shitty people make good art? I don't know. It still doesn't make it less sincere to me. Whoever he is now or before, I believe every word he's saying here. It's part of the infinite fascination with the Infinite Sadness, I guess. Anyway. It's a mess, it's pretentious, it's painfully earnest, it's so fucking good. I totally understand the 1 star reviews. I think you either get it or you don't but I really, really do.
what a weird and cool album! it's perhaps the greatest thing William P. Corgan has ever made, though there's absolutely an air of art-house pretension to the whole thing. i mean it is a 2+ hour-long double album, but i dunno... it just kinda works. it's hard to explain how billy's weird voice, lyrics that could've come from an eighth grader's spiral notebook, and a very rough "concept" album throughline combine to make something far greater than the sum of their parts, but this album is great. the musicianship is rock solid and the songs all feel unique while still contributing toward a cohesive whole. bullet with butterfly wings was definitely the first one i heard (probably in middle school) and i slowly discovered the other singles in the years following. basically the entire first disc is good to great, starting off super strong and punctuated by highlights throughout. the second disc gets a bit lackluster in the middle/towards the end but finishes on a sweet note. it's a great listen overall, and I'll be returning to this one in the future. oh and obligatory mention that billy corgan is like, the worst. not sure how he knocked it out of the park with this one but yeah favorites: mellon collie and the infinite sadness, tonight tonight, jellybelly, zero, bullet with butterfly wings, galapogos, muzzle, thirty-three, 1979, farewell and goodnight
Fantastic album, lots of different yet consistently good genre crossing music.
Super long. But worth it.
Awesome!!!!
I really missed out on a great album
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!! 6/5 stars!
I really enjoy the smashing pumpkins, This album showed their ability to mix art with pure rock
Overblown. Pretentious. Sprawling. I wore out my two CDs when this came out. 5/5!
I may be a little blinded by nostalgia on this album but it seriously holds up. Somehow this album can be simultaneously beautiful, angry, sad and joyous from track to track and still be coherent as one of my favorite double albums of all time. 1979 is one of my favorite music videos ever and is like a time capsule of being a teenager in the 90s.
Oh boy. The Smashing Pumpkins are one of the most important bands in my life. I was gifted the album Siamese Dream when I was 15 and it was transformative. My notebooks throughout high school were littered with Billy Corgan lyrics as well as SP hearts. I even rocked my own Zero t-shirt. This was all in the late 2000s, way past the Pumpkins peak; so like the subject matter of many Billy Corgan lyrics, I felt alone in my fandom for this band. To this day, listening to SD or MCIS brings back the feelings of being a teenager. While I prefer SD over MCIS, that is not to say that MCIS is not a classic and a near perfect body of work. The album has incredible range, with songs as dynamic and heavy as Jellybelly, Porceleina, Here is No Why, etc., contrasted with tracks so incredibly gentle and beautiful as the title track, In the Arms of Sleep, and By Starlight. Thus dichotomy of the album, and the band throughout their discography, is what I perhaps most adore about the Pumpkins. Notes: -the title track is apparently a song Corgan wrote to learn piano. Similarly, it’s one of the first songs I learned, and one of my go-tos -the strings to Tonight, Tonight are fucking incredible. I love this song more and more with each listen, even 15 years in. -hot take: the heavy singles (Bullet with Butterfly Wings, Zero) I find to be much weaker than other heavy tracks (Jellybelly and Muzzle should definitely have been singles) -1979 is so iconic. Who doesn’t think of that music video? Quintessential 90s. -the grandnesses of the album is what makes it alluring, but also where it suffers. Cut some songs here and there and I would consider it perfect. Overall: 5/5 Favorite tracks: title track, Tonight, Tonight, Porceleina, Thru the Eyes of Ruby, Here is No Why, Muzzle, 1979
A mix of ambient chill and charged bangers!
Classic brilliant
Another classic! Hard not to have some filler on a double album but even the filler here is decent and the storage songs are really strong.
Great
Favorite of mine
Speaks to just how great this album is that I give it 5* despite Billy Corgan's godawful voice. I am frequently haunted by the idea of how incredible the Pumpkins could have been with a decent singer
This album takes me back. I had this on double disc CD and wore it out! Definitely like some tracks better than others, but this one had some of my favorite SP songs on it.
love these guys
One of my favorite albums of all time!
Soooo mannnny memories! And sooo much good music!! Loved.
Love this album! I remember buying it in high school and the moon faces on each cd. CD’s! Wow I’m old
I've always been neutral on the Smashing Pumpkins, but was definitely a fan of Mellon Collie. Every time I hear this band and this album in particular, I'm taken back to the late 90s and a good friend of mine that was an über Smashing Pumpkins fan. We jabbed each other over music and SP were always an easy target for me. My buddy is no longer with us but it's times like this that I fondly remember our friendship and great conversations. So, for any future reviewers of this album, regardless of where you stand on it, please know that Dave loved it and loved people. Cheers Dave! 5/5 for Dave.
Straight banger. Drums drive everything. Will repeat.
I liked it!
Dont need an app to know this is incredible
Amazing album. I've liked it ever since it was released.
what can i say - classic to me
Such enormous scope and presence.
drags a bit too long but very enjoyable listen (if you don't mind his voice). Mix of heavier and softer songs
One of my first albums ever. Bought by Mom’s BF Marc. Jamie G gave me the shirt. Incredible album start to finish
Very fucking long
Loved it!!! Every song had a different vibe but still cohesive within the album and goes so hard
This is incredible. I had heard a few songs from this which i liked but the entire thing is nonstop quality. An amazing feat for such a long album.
Smashing Pumpkins’s best album. People who only heard their radio songs probably didn’t realize how heavy they could play as heard on this one. It’s really quite a feat to put out a double album with as many songs that kick the way that these do. I was happy to go back to this one and listen with fresh ears. I think I’ll be listening more in the next few days.
i have this cd
Wanna go for a ride? One of the best double-albums ever. The variety and mastery of different musical styles on here is incredible. I love the slow songs and the wild headbangers and everything in between.
What a sprawling album. You have to give it 5/5 for the effort that went into it, the impact and how diverse the music is and genres played.
4.5
a masterpiece theough and through… it is a bit long but I dont think there are skips on it. It’s all structured nicely and all the songs are beautifully recorded and mixed so theres that too. It has one of my favorite songs Cupid de locke also
Great
Could rate this entire album a 5 based solely on how I feel about Tonight, Tonight but luckily I don’t have to because the whole album slaps and deserves the 5.
Stunning from start to finish
Don't love it all but the parts I do love are fantastic
Magnum Opus
Awesome. One of my favourites
Always in my top 10!!
Very good album. Only complaint is it is too long. Hardly gives a chance for any songs to stand out in any meaningful way.
There's no getting around it - this is a long album. But, it's also amazing. A good variety of songs, with some heavier songs following ballads. It's great.
Siamese Dream is tighter, but there's enough material this time to fill two CDs and then some. The companion album, The Aeroplane Flies High, is also pretty good. I like the followup, Adore, also this was the Pumpkins' peak. No tracks make me want to skip them.
Holy shit this is good. I've only seen a few albums that go for 2 hours hold up and that's Songs In The Key Of Life - Stevie Wonder
Brilliant. A masterpiece of rock music.
The Smashing Pumpkins have this signature musical gesture - a 16 beat crescendo of repeated accented guitar/bass/drum notes followed by a drum outro. I noticed it used on at least 5 tracks on this album to heighten the drama. It works. This is arguably the last mythic grunge album. There’s so much to love on here - not only because it’s a double album. It’s ridiculous how good all of these far-ranging tracks are.
Such a classic 90s album. Lots of gems on here. 4.5 stars
I loved this a lot. Maybe it’s nostalgia, but it was just fantastic. I remember buying this 2disk set when it came out and running up to my dorm room to listen on my stereo. The artwork was incredible, the videos were incredible. And the band had taken a turn from Siamese Dream. It was a great time. Love is my favorite track.
Damn good one
A really underrated band in general on account of Billy Corgan’s personal life. Making a 2 hour album you don’t get tired of is insanely impressive.
lets go
An epic double CD when it came out. Kind of a mix between grunge and hard rock. Just great to listen to.
This album was long. Its length made me want to dislike it. I listened to it a few times seeking any substantial flaw that I could use to give it a 4 instead of a 5. Unfortunately, despite its length, it is a perfect album. Even the songs that weren’t to my personal taste were essential to the album itself as a work of art. I have no choice but to give it a 5. Also, is it just me or does the song Thirty-Three sound just like Journey To The Past from the movie ‘Anastasia’?????
hell yeah man
One of my all time favorites. Great mood music, lots of hits.
"Time is never time at all / You can never ever leave / Without leaving a piece of youth" The smashing pumpkins is my #2 artist of all time on spotify, so this review is heavily biased. I have listened to this record before, but I don't remember it being 2 hours long, so I may have only listened to the first side in the past. I find it kind-of cringy that Corgan wanted this album to be "the wall" for gen. X, but damn if it doesn't come close. I really, really enjoy the musical ideas behind the smashing pumpkins and their music. And I think this album rivals that of the pumpkin's more accessible album for casual listeners- "Siamese Dreams" T2- "Tonight, Tonight" is an epic ballad about the inevitable passing of time, with a focus on making the most of the moment. Anything is possible tonight. T3- "Jellybelly" provides a heavy wall of sound complimented by Alt-rock vocals. T4- "Zero" has perhaps one of the most hard 'metal'-sounding riffs in the back, alongside emo lyrics that creates a contrarian's anthem. T5- "Here is no why" has a genius guitar riff that blends heavy fuzz with the best parts of mathrock and heavier rock, to preach it's cynical song T6- "Bullet with butterfly wings" complete's the album's run of 5 amazing songs to kick off the album and builds up to a chorus that preaches something that is all-too-familiar for those working the 9-5 rat race. T11 - "Galapogos" is a soft-spoken song of admitting one's struggles, and fears of solitude. Disc 2 offers a lot less in the form of obvious hits, but begins with T2 - "Bodies" and continues a cynical vibe of hopeless romanticism, with the haunting chorus "Love is suicide," which may be a reference to Courtney Love, Corgan's ex-girlfriend, and the woman rumored to have played a part in Cobain's suicide. T3- "Thirty-Three" offers a change of outlook, providing a hopeful wish that "Love can last forever." T5- "1979" is perhaps one of the pumpkin's greatest singles, and is the track that introduced me to the band. It offers an unfaltering wave of nostalgia with the hypnotic guitar backing, and wistful lyrics talking about the "cool kids" sung in the past tense, and ideas that there is little to worry about for these kids beyond something as frivolous as social clicks and their respective rules. 1979, to me, offers a direct response to the other hit track, "Tonight, Tonight" which calls one to make the most of the moment, and damn if that's not exactly what happens in 1979. T8- "Stumbeline" is a depressing track of misspent time, and past wishes, and connects to the album's theme of falling asleep with the last line "come around ruby, I could never sleep alone," and the name reminds me personally of "Thumbelina," a bedtime fairy-tale that recounts a girl, borne of a seed, that escapes an abusive marriage with a mole T9- "X.Y.U" is a very heavy song, with references to "Mary had a little lamb," continuing the theme of sleeping, and bed-time stories with dark background stories. This track offers a reflection back onto a very toxic relationship. The second disk ends the album with a fitting track given the theme of sleeping, saying "Farewell and goodnight" This album encapsulates a reflection of one's youth, and lessons learnt too late, relationships symbolized by fairy-tales, and the depressing realization that time can never move backwards. The entire album seems to suggest the universality behind the human emotion of sorrow, and spans multiple genres from rock, alt rock, grunge, heavy metal, alt pop, and art rock. The two sides (discs) of the album seem to suggest a theme of 'day' for the first, and night for the latter. Upon research from the wikipedia, the vinyl was split into 6 sides, including names like "Dawn," "Tea time," and "Dusk" to describe the first side, and names like "Twilight," "Midnight," and "Starlight," to describe the latter, although the songs are in a slightly-different order. This idea also goes along with the ideas expressed in the album, with more positive (yet sorrowful) memories of youth and nostalgia taking place in disc 1, for day, and more pessimistic ideas, fairy-tales, and other references to sleep happening mostly in disc. 2, night. Although a difficult choice, I'll put 1979 on the playlist due to my personal connection with the track. I love this record, and despite it's length, I never once found myself bored. I would recommend this to any enjoyer of music that has similar tastes to mine, that wants a thorough experience and reflection of music. An easy 5/5
musicalmente falando um album bem alternativo, aonde todas as musicas se ligam e tem vibes bem legais, nao é enjoativo, so que tambem nao escutaria 6 horas do album deluxe. No geral um album otimo
An enjoyable way to spend 2 hours.
Kende alleen bullet, rest blijkt ook dik te zijn
Incredible triple album so rare to make a good one. It’s amazing how often it can slip from a heavy high energy song to a soft sweet song. Really tough to rate because there’s a ton of great tracks and decent bit of filler but don’t even think the filler is that bad. Rating: 4.6
some good memories and some bad memories listening to this album but I still love it
Lots of nostalgia with this album. Billy Corgan is brilliant and this was a great album.
Really long 2 hour album. Got boring after a while
Beautiful moments of thrashing
One of my favourite bands but not necessarily my favourite album; undoubtedly it is a classic, but hits on self-indulgent at points. I found I prefer the heavier second half now. Found it funny to read reviews below about Billy Corgan's whingy voice. I can't really deny he has a 'unique' vocal style but this has never put me off the band! Also love listening to podcasts about how grumpy Billy is (e.g. check out the SP episode of the '60 Songs That Explain The '90s' podcast). His dedication to the art of grouch over the past three decades only deserves admiration, IMHO.
1000000000/10
This is my jam
Tonight tonight is a good song but I already knew that. The album gets a lot harder right after that, quite a pivot. Good 90s energy. Also it's crazy how many singles I recognize on this album. No wonder it's on the list
If these guys were from Washington state, they'd be part of the Grunge Big 4 conversation, no cap
This was great. Brought me back to 20 years ago. Some really good songs on here I forgot about!
Definitivamente un discazo, muchos matices sonoros dentro su estilo tan peculiar y oscuro, muy recomendado.
Love this album. Bought it on a VT summer vacation and listened to it on repeat constantly for weeks.
Yass, The Pumpkins at their finest. If an album ever summed up Billy Corgan as an artist it’s this. It’s overblown, it’s self indulgent, it’s a bit wanky at times but when it goes, it fucking goes. Tonight, Tonight - Jellybelly - Zero - Here is no why - Bullet with Butterfly wings is up there with any 5 song run on any guitar driven album ever. It’s ridiculous the musicianship and playing on those 5 songs. Disc 2 isn’t as good as Disc 1. Some people aren’t keen on Flood’s production on this one but I love it. Easily 5 stars.
Best
The first 3 songs will already give you the full overview what this double album is going to bring for the next 2 hours: Slow intermissions, Songs that perfectly balance the line between kitsch and art (a line they will unfortunately cross many times later in their career) mixed with full on guitar and drums driven 'Siamese Dreams'-style rockers. Not all songs are of the same quality unfortunately and the album suffers a bit from the 'more is less' syndrome. It could have done with culling about 30 minutes of material, make it 2x 45 minute sides and have a perfect album. 4.5*
Lungo è lungo, ma bello. Non proprio nelle mie corde, ma 4.5 tutto...
Oh man! 5 stars. I've probably listened to this album one million two hundred and thirty three thousand two hundred and five times. It's a masterpiece of an album and a landmark of an era, not only in the history of music but in my own history as well. This album came out during my junior year of high school and marked a time in my life of clear division from before and after. I'd just moved back to Utah, living with grandma, trying to find myself in a big city. I felt alone a lot of the time, and this album would most definitely be playing on my walkman on my way to school most mornings. I identified with so many of the songs. His lyrical talent in this album is unparalleled to any of his of his albums. The words are just so beautiful and pefectly poetic. 10 stars if I could for this one. I'm so happy I finally got to see them live this year. It was an amazing show, and it was good being able to share that with my son.
Awesome
Beautiful opening arrangement. Tonight, Tonight is so hard not to at least hum along to. I know lots of people don't care for Billy Corgan's voice, but I like it. Even softer hitting tracks like Here Is No Why are great. The first 6 tracks on this album are fantastic. Vocals and bassline on Tales of a Scorched Earth are fantastic. The breakdown in XYU is a lot of fun. For such a long record, it does a good job with moving in and out of tempo and tone.
Peak grunge.
I haven’t listened to this album straight through in 25+ years. And I think I’m going to need to change that. It’s really good, and carries its weight most of the way through the 2 hours. It tails off at the end a bit because it goes into a block of less hard-driving rock songs, but that’s about the only knock I have against it. I thoroughly enjoyed getting the chance to revisit this album.
Fabulous
I was just listening to this album this morning and wondering when it might show up on the list! Not a huge coincidence as I listen to this one a lot. If everyone was told they could only have one album, this would be my pick. It's not the best-written album in the world ("in the eyes of the jackal I say kaboom"?) but it is my favourite. I first heard it when I was in my early 20s, reading through the early Anne Rice vampire novels - an excellent pairing, by the way - so it'll always take me back to those days. I needed a new heel for my shoe, so I decided to go to Morganville which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So, I tied an onion to my belt which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel. And in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em...
I've been on the record several times during this project about my disdain for double albums. They are almost always overlong monuments to hubris and excess with too much filler padding the run time. Many, many decent double albums would have been instant classics by trimming the fat and making them single discs. Many more are just ill-conceived in their entirety. Billy Corgan is uniquely predisposed to believe he could pull it off, though, and relatively early in the Pumpkins career. It came out in the era of CDs, which means that two stuffed CDs translated to more like four LPs. Everything about it seems like a recipe for disaster. And then that crazy son of a bitch pulled it off. Mellon Collie would be on a short list for greatest double (quadruple?) albums of all time. It is rock solid until well into disc two, and even then only lets the foot off the pedal slightly. Sonically diverse with interesting arrangements and compelling melodies and hooks throughout. AND he put out a BOX SET of B-sides from the same era that is ALSO packed with tracks that could have made the cut here. This could have easily been four CDs/eight LPs and been nearly equally as good. This whole project is a remarkable feat.
One of my favorite double albums of all time.
Magnum opus, se nota que estaban inspirados
Clearly a 5, nice to listen to this album again. Still sounds fresh and also i notice now that it´s very well produced; "crisp and clear" i would say.
Siamese Dream still edges it for me, but this was a very strong follow-up album.
Completely satisfying, covering an enormous dynamic range and emotional spectrum. In two hours not a weak moment: a true masterpiece.
On my review of Siamese Dream I said it was mad that the Pumpkins got lumped in as 'grunge', and how I thought they were way more interesting than a lot of other bands at the time. Mellon Collie only further exemplifies that point, because this album totally blows those guys out of the water. How many other bands of the time had this range and breadth of songs? This level of mad ambition? This insanely prolific level of creativity? Even their (many) B-sides from this era were so good and could have easily appeared on this album, or walked onto any other album of the time. Am I biased? ....Yes. I came to this project with Mellon Collie as my favourite album of all time. I have the t-shirt, the record mat, the original pressing vinyl that I spent an absurdly large amount of money on. This album, to me, is perfect. I love it deeply on a very personal level. It means an awful lot to me, and I think it always will. So with that said, I'll try and leave some notes with fresh ears... I think what's funny, re-listening to this critically through the 1001 lens, I totally get why people might find it a bit bloated. If I listened to it for the first time I would undoubtedly be blown away by a lot of these songs, but I think I would likely dismiss a number of them too. Overall though, I do love the way this album ebbs and flows, and has various moods working through it. I like how some of the weirder songs punctuate that too. I love how grandiose the whole thing is. And that extends to the cover and the whole package. It's beautiful. Sonically it's so good. The drums really struck me this time around, as they explode into life in Tonight, Tonight. There's so many sounds, instruments and vocals layered brilliantly throughout the whole thing. The work that Flood and Alan Moulder did can't be underestimated in that respect. This album does things to me that I struggle to explain. Listening to something like 1979 - I love it SO much. It's transcendental. It evokes something in me that makes me so happy. As a nearly 40 year old man, I find myself losing more and more individual fandoms, but it's so satisfying to know that I can put this on and still be so moved by it. I came here with the plan of hopefully beating this album and finding my new favourite. I haven't yet, and likely won't. After all, how do you top something that has so much nostalgic and sentimental value? Something that was there for me in some of my most formative years, and has stayed a constant in my life since? I will hold out hope though, because if Mellon Collie can be toppled, it'll need to be by an album that's very special indeed.
A double album that has songs that will fill a double album. Not 100% bangers, but nothing that’s really filler. I think this holds up well. I was a fan in the days. I’m still a fan now.
live changing album that everyone should hear in their life time. art
BANGER!!
Classic from my child hood and one of my favorite bands.
Yes, this is a prohibitively long album. And in just about every other instance, that would be an automatic mark against it. I can't help but marvel, though, at the scope, cohesiveness, and brilliance of this record. I've owned it from the time it was released, and it stands as the only Smashing Pumpkins album I really listen to. And as much of an "album head" as I am, I may have listened to this from track one to track 101 in one sitting once since buying it (before today, that is). In that sense it's like owning three albums. But thematically, sonically, lyrically, it's of a piece. For me, this is the album where the grating guitar tones, grating vocals, band performances, and fulsome production coalesce into the definitive SP sound. Every song is great, and the standouts step it up a notch. "Zero," "Bullet With Butterfly Wings," "Where Boys Fear To Tread," "Thirty-Three," "1979," all the ones you know as well as some sleepers... I mean, god damn, Corgan was on a tear.
What an absolutely awesome experience. I was captivated for the full two hours a definite favourite for sure. Although I think disc one was definitely stronger, it's nice to have a genuinely great heavy rock experience as seen on the second disc. This is as much of an album as it is a journey, meaning that songs work in their own right as well as a part of the larger story of the album itself. Absolutely stand out stuff and worth a listen, even with it's 2 hour runtime (near 6 hours if you decide to go for that deluxe edition!) Stand out songs (there's a lot, 2 discs AND they're both great): - Here is no why - Bullet with Butterfly Wings: This one was in my childhood a lot, don't ask how - Porcelina of the Vast Oceans: I have a real soft spot for long songs that shift style as they go along, certified banger - Take Me Down - Farewell and Goodnight
fantastical album
Superb from start to finish. Brilliant.
First album generated that I have actually listened to before. I'm not a massive SP fan but this album is rather special, imo. My favourite of theirs by quite some margin. I'd forgotten how noisy this album can get, but listening again after some time I'm appreciating the softer tracks. To Forgive is simply beautiful. Heavier the better usually for me but Pumpkins are a band that can get the ballads right too. Nothing better than a heavy band dropping the heaviness, to my ears at least. I can see how this might become a bit much being 2hrs long but I truly can't get enough of this.
One of the bands defining a generation (a big contender at least). Not a big fan of Corgan and his ego though, but I have to admit his achievements.
fuck yeah pumpkins
BL: one of my favourite albums of all time. Was the soundtrack to my first year of sixth form and some of the songs hold really special memories to me. I remember learning the intro on piano to impress a girl, listening to Tonight, Tonight with my friend Joe and nearly crying - and then we tried to record a cover of 1979. Porcelina of the Vast oceans was one of the first long tracks I ever listened to which widened my perception of what music could be. Thirty Three and Farewell & Goodnight are still in rotation and are such beautiful orchestrations. Cannot wait to give this a relisten. AL: just as brilliant as I remember. Very fun. Does drag a little bit in the second half but by raw amount of amazing content this is still an amazing album FT: “Jellybelly”, “porcelina of the vast oceans”, “take me down”, “love”, “thirty three”, “beautiful”, “farewell and goodnight” 5/5
Great album, never listened to it before. So many different styles (dreamy, heavy, electronic, feedbacky, strings) and it’s all good. The songs I knew (the hits) are probably the best. Tonight tonight, 1979, bullet with butterfly wings- all great. Other favorites: Porcelina of the vast oceans Beautiful- cool groove Starlight- 1979 into take of scorched earth is pretty cool. The vocals are so abrasive and crazy sounding on that one! Least favorite : we only come out at night Super long though it took me four listening sessions to get through….
I always thought of 'Smashing Pumpkins' as a verb. i.e. describing the act of taking some pumpkins and bashing them to bits. However, noting the 'The' in the band name, it seems that 'smashing' is actually an adjective, referring to the pumpkins being really rather good, i.e. "have you seen the smashing pumpkins over there, Giles, they look like they'd make a hearty and nourishing soup as well as a ghoulish Halloween lantern". It's a shame, as the first, more aggressive, interpretation matches the energy of this record better than a gentle trip to a village fete does. It's a two hour long, 28 track, double CD, triple vinyl album, and although it ebbs and flows, it is always bold and confident and never boring. Except for the first track, it is also never relaxing, and won't let you settle into it. Although I can't fully get on board with Billy Corgan's voice when at it's most forceful, I enjoyed every song and like how the record is eclectic but still reads as a piece. It is brilliantly sequenced to bring the energy up or down at exactly the right time. This is my first time hearing this album through and it's instantly clear that people are right to consider it a classic. I wish I'd taken notice of Just Joe and listened when I was younger. Rating: 4.5/5 Playlist track: Bullet with Butterfly Wings Date listened: 13/06/23
Took me a while to finish, but man I loved this album. It takes you on quite a journey with lots of different sounds beyond the 70% solid alt rock. It feels like they took orchestration and composition more serious. Especially with the length of the album. The soft and hard fighting against each other is lovely. Corgan's voice is of course unique, and I can see how it could get old, but I dig it throughout. Will listen again on a roady.
The Wall for nihilists - beautiful and angsty.
It's a classic
I was a complete Smashing Pumpkins fanboy for a good few years, long sleeve zero shirt, probably one step away from shaving my head. That being said, this is still the best double album ever made. I got into SP through Cherub Rock from Siamese Dream which is classic SP but Mellon Collie is much more in every direction. There are really heavy tracks, grand uplifting tracks, super light tracks and it's all cohesive as an album. Jimmy Chamberlain is my favourite drummer and takes songs like Jellybelly to another level. Can understand if people can't get away with the singing and I think it would have been even more successful with a Chris Cornell or something on vocals but I think it does grow on you! In short, easy 5 stars. It's a real shame how much the SP quality has dropped off but there are still decent tracks here and there.
I'd been waiting for this, was one of the few albums I loved as a teenager that I was pretty certain would be on this list.... I was obsessed with this album for a while. I actually remember buying the CD from HMV in Carlisle and listening to it on my diskman on the bus home. it's perfect for an angsty teenager. Such a mix in styles too, from really quite pretty piano, to slower emotional, to dream like, to love, all the way to quite heavy angry songs. Lyrically, he can get a bit "look how deep I am" in parts. An ode to no one in particular, which incidentally used to be my favourite track..... Loads of hits on the album though. The first half, which would've been the first CD, is way better than the second imo, but there are still lots of great tracks on the second too. Highlights: Mellon collie and the infinite sadness Tonight tonight Jelly Belly Zero Bullet with butterfly wings To forgive An ode to no one Galapagos Muzzle Porcelina of the vast oceans Bodies Thirty three 1979 By starlight Phew! I think only tales of a scorched earth and cupid de locke I can leave
So whiny, but the voice of a generation.
Too many bangers to mention on this one, but I will anyway - 1979, Galapagos, Tonight, Take Me Down, By Starlight...the list goes on and on. Billy Corgan's masterpiece, IMO - a consistent artistic vision, executed perfectly from start to finish. It's 1995 again and I've got long hair 😂
How do I say this? It’s one of rock n rolls greatest releases…ever. 28 songs sprawled across two full albums. Nay a skippable track and classics at every turn. It’s a two hour epic worthy of praise. Seated for me at the throne of ‘90s alternative.
It was interesting and did not expect something like this it is somewhat one of my top 10 albums since i am not that knowledged in it.
Amazing blend of genres, great concept, great songwriting, overall an amazing album.
It's too long, but there are too many good tracks to give it a lesser rating.
Excited for this one. Surprised I haven’t listened to this all the way through AND that I didn’t know it was so damn long. Man the intro was beautiful, and played well into track 2. SHEEEEES THE OOOOOONE FOR MEEEEE SHES ALL I REALLY NEED OH YEA I love the spacey sounding synth towards the end of ‘To Forgive’
Classic/10
The first time I listened to this album I listened to it 3 times through - back to back Not entirely by design. One wrong turn on a pre-satnav journey through mid Wales turned a 2 hour journey into a 6 hour one But then there aren’t many double albums that can reward such a listen, let alone ones that still stand up 30 years later Is it bloated? Of course. But it’s very much the equivalent of overdoing at the most fantastic feast imaginable. You may have had too much but you’ve had too much of the very best
Oh man I love this album and I forgot it existed until today
This is my first time listening to this album in full and it's a lot better than I expected. I expected it to be good but there's such a good mix of extremely loud heavy hitters and songs that take their time. The production is great and yes, on a bad day I don't really want to listen to Billy sing but most of the time I like it. It's grand in scope and length but if you take the time to listen to it I think it is worth it. A little demanding especially if you've never heard this band before. There wasn't any songs that I disliked. Score: 90 Art: 80
Love 90's alternative, love this album. It's 2 hours, it absolutely doesn't need to be that long, but there is no denying the amount of bangers here. There are great songs on both discs with some beautiful melodies. One second it's heavy and harsh then turns soft and sweet right after. Billy Corgan is a douche, his voice might sound like a drill to the brain to some, but I like it and find there is more challenging vocals elsewhere on this list. Also, Siamese Dream might be better.
Excellent piece of work. Influential and beautiful
Ah yes, the double CD I filched from my older sister's room. Remember when you'd buy a double CD and it would come in a very clunky awkward case that didn't fit into the CD racks we bought to show off our impressive music collections? This was a crown jewel of that collection for sure, after I stole it from hers. She didn't have really cool taste, she just had this one to impress a boy she liked. I, on the other hand, listened to this album a lot. I really got into it in my college years. Billy is a difficult personality and his opinions are polarizing at best, but he's a tortured soul who writes beautiful music. I'm not a fan of overly long albums, but this just flows so perfectly throughout. It taps into something very melancholic and sad inside of me indeed. It's a cathartic listen but it also brings the alt rock intensity I crave too. Stellar work, an all-time great.
I would usually hate to have to listen to this much emo-rock, but I think this hit me on a good day. 5
Such a great album.
Absolute titan of 90s alt rock. This album has so many bangers, it would be almost any other band's greatest hits album.
This album is really good. Like seriously it would be a dream to listen to it front to back at least once a week. There are so many songs in here that I wish people can talk about more. For me my favorite song on this is Lily (My One And Only).
Look, is my rating based heavily on nostalgia? Absolutely. Is Billy Corgan a raging douche? Indubitably. But I still fucking love this album. I feel like the ratio of bangers to filler is EXTREMELY high, way more than Siamese Dream, which is like half filler IMHO. This one has a handful, sure, but honestly the ebb and flow from the harder grunge songs to the melodic ballads makes the 2 hours go by like a breeze for me (although I recommend taking a quick break after Take Me Down to switch CDs 😉). Anyway, I usually listen to this album once a year around the end of October when it came out originally, and it's got perfect vibes for that time of year. Getting the annual listen out of the way in March felt a little weird, but it's still great. Probably listen to again in 7 months tbh! It's a subjective opinion and people are allowed to feel differently of course, but for me this will always be THE Smashing Pumpkins album, and one of the best albums of the 90s. I'll say top 25, it was a pretty good decade. 😆
I've heard a lot of complaints that this album is bloated, but honestly I don't know that I could pick out a single track that I actively dislike. Billy Corgan is a genuinely great songwriter, managing to keep the album authentically grungy and alternative whilst having some excellent pop instincts that make it no wonder this was a big hit. Obviously there are some overwrought lyrics on this thing but they come across to me as less cringeworthy and more charming, very authentic feeling without any of the artifice that is poison to the tone the band is trying to achieve. I also appreciated the wide variety of tones and sounds the band was willing to explore, opening with an instrumental piano ballad and going on to demonstrate harder grungier tracks as well as some light pseudo-dream pop cuts. Overall the best criteria I can judge a double album on is if I ever wanted it to hurry up and end, and to be honest I cannot say that thought ever crossed my mind. In fact I honestly wanted to jump straight back in and listen over again, which is a rare feat even for many shorter albums! Highly recommended. Highlights: Tonight, Tonight, Zero, Bullet With Butterfly Wings, Cupid De Locke, Porcelina of the Vast Oceans Bodies, 1979, Thru The Eyes of Ruby, X.Y.U, By Starlight
This was my first concert this tour. For sure 6/5
Not sure there is a band who can go from love song to rage any better than the Pumpkins. I am so happy this album made the list because the list has given me the patience to really dig into these artist on a level I have never given the appropriate attention they deserve. Well, some of them. Anyway, I have always been a fan of the Pumpkins, but this album has made my appreciation grow to a level that only a few bands have been able to accomplish. The sound and many of the the songs are outstanding. The lyrics are even better. I write stuff out and have quoted so many lyrics, my review would take hours to write, so I'll keep to a few I loved the most because we all listened and heard. Songs I will forever love: Tonight Tonight - love the orchestra. Favorite lines "Believe in me as I believe in you". "The more you change, the less you feel." This line because it makes me think, not true. The more you change, if it a good change, the more you love. The more you feel. The more you appreciate those you love. The more we need to feel and love those in our lives. Zero - "intoxicated with my madness. I'm in love with my sadness". "God is empty, just like me." 1979, Thirty Three. All time classics. Bullet with Butterfly Wings - One of my go to garage and rage out due to the stresses of the world and life. Mindy going through the difficulties of cancer and treatments. I would go to the garage, toke up and scream this song until I was hoarse and crying. Somehow made me feel everything was going to be OK. Sometimes I still cry when I hear this song. Shit, gotta tear in my eye right now. Songs that somehow feel off the radar, that shouldn't have: Here is no Why, An Ode to no One, Muzzle and X.Y.U X.Y.U - change Mary to Mindy - is this about us? "She didn't wanna be. She didn't wanna know. She couldn't run away cause she is crazy." :0 Love songs/Deep meaning/Beautiful lyrics" Take me Down, Beautiful, In the arms of Tonight - "And I'll always need her more than she could ever need me." Holy shit, that line hit me hard. The truth always does. Galapagos - "and tell me I'm the man I'm suppose to be. I won't deny the pain." gogdamn............ The lyrical content is some of the best I have ever heard off one album. I call myself a Pumpkins fan and I need to go back to revisit all of their albums. BTW, great live show in Detroit a few years back. Pretty confident I see this year. So happy I spent the time to take this very long album in and let in soak into the soul. Can't say all the songs were great, but damnit, I'm doing it because this album really hit hard in a great way. If you think this is long, I felt like I cut off a lot. haha. 5
Was a fan of the Pumpkins back in the day, and played the first two albums a lot, and saw them live a couple of times (including touring this album, where they didn't play anything from Gish). Wasn't so much into this one at the time, perhaps I was a bit worn out by sad angry Billy. His voice never bothered me but I know it does for others. 2 hours long, it's going to be a challenge for some but I found this worth going through again. There really is a lot of great stuff here, the singles are rightly famous but there is a wide range of music on show, they can do soft and mellow as well as hard and cranky. Drumming is top notch. And oh yes, the 90's angst here is out and proud. I'm no longer a rat in cage but still got a nostalgia kick from this.
I'm not 100% sure it needed to be two hours long, but I'm glad it is. A classic of the "post-grunge" era, with loads of light and shade and musical variety. I played in a Pumpkins cover band when I was a teenager, and love the songs as much now as I did then.
The album that guided me into alternative rock world. Love it dearly.
10/10 okay, I’ve been putting off Mellon Collie for a looooonng time because I just couldn’t really see myself getting into The Smashing Pumpkins but actually sitting down and listening to this beautiful behemoth of an album, it all just works together so perfectly I don’t only understand the hype, I’m completely experiencing it, and it’s beautiful
Such a great album. Often feel it has some of Corgan's deepest compositions. As I have gotten older I have started to appreciate Siamese Dream maybe more, but this is probably the most influential double album in my life. Top Songs: Stumbleine, 1979, Muzzle, Galapagos, For No One 5/5
first disc is amazing - second falls off. but the first disc alone gets it a 5
It’s always great to see albums already in your collection show up on here. Classic 90s prog rock
Great, still great, always great
One of the best albums ever made, those who were teenagers in the 90s remember turning on the TV and watching the Smashing Pumpkins videos and singing all the songs on this CD. It was always a dream of mine, but I could only realize it as an adult... to this day I remember admiring the booklet, reading the lyrics, and listening to the songs!
one of the best albums fr. wooooow
Tellement de classiques sur cet album. Pour moi c’est inimitable. Je suis peut-être influencée par mon âge, mais je m’assume
Never have gone through and listened to the whole thing. Quite a few good songs on here.
I mean, what is there to say. Such an excellent album. It wears on just a little bit too long for me, but the diversity of the instrumentation and feel of each song makes it work. Favorite track: An Ode to No One
really enjoyed the different styles. reminded me of some radiohead and indie rock. there were definitely some takes that were way harder than i was expecting but this album is really packed. highlights involve 1979, porcelina of vast oceans, zero, etc.
I'm generally not big on long-ass double albums, but this thing is a masterpiece. I can hear the influences all over modern emo, indie and alt rock.
A rare 2hr+ sebum that manages to keep my attention and not lose it f9r the VAST majority is an absolute oddity, and here, Billy Corgan, iowner of the NWA, and the rest of his clearly fiercely talented bandmates del8ver harder than i ever expected. I knew I liked the Pumpkins' singles a good vit, but I never really knew how much 9f just l8ie THEM. Woulda been a 4.5 if half stars were an option, but I'm rounding up cuz rounding down feels wrong.
One of the best of the 1990s!
The scope of this album is incredible. It contains some of the heaviest, grungiest, downright filthiest guitar music committed to record (ably backed by one of rock’s best drummers, Mr Jimmy Chamberlin), side-by-side with some of the quietest and most delicate. Then somewhere in between you’ve got masterpieces like Tonight Tonight and 1979, and underrated bangers like Love. It’s probably important to factor in that Billy Corgan explicitly said it was aimed at 14-24 year olds (y’know, the age when people still feel feelings) and I for one vividly remember many angsty teenage nights soundtracked by Bullet With Butterfly Wings or Bodies. It’s 2 hours long, so there’s obviously gonna be some flab (mainly towards the end of disc 2) but I don’t think condensing it was ever an option - this was always intended to be a grand, sprawling opus. 4.5. But yeah, I’ll round up. The highs are so high, and the lows aren’t really that low, so I think sheer force of ambition wins out over perfection here.
PREFS : Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, Tonight, Tonight, Zero, Here is no Why, Bullet With Butterfly Wings, Fuck You (an Ode to No One), Love, Cupid de Locke, Galapogos, Muzzle, Porcelina of the Vast Oceans, Where Boys Fear to Tread, Bodies, Thirty-Three, In the Arms of Sleep, 1979, Thru the Eyes of Ruby, X.Y.U., We Only Come Out at Night, Beautiful, By Starlight MOINS PREF : Jellybelly
Eihän tää Pumpkinsien pras levy ole (Siamese Dream on), mutta koska olin teininä maailman suurin Pumpkins-fani, vietin käsittämättömän monta tuntia elämässäni Pumpkinsin nettiviestialustalla (mikä on message board suomeksi?) ja suurin osa ystävistäni ja heiloistani on tavattu bändin kautta tai takia, siksi 5. Plus yhä edelleen osaan levyn ulkoa ja takaperin ja unissani. Oi, teini-ikä.
A masterful double album. A masterclass in weaving between heavy and tender. And so many hits!
I forgot how much I love this album. There are some weird tracks but overall so good. My favorites are all the hits, but I forgot about X.Y.U. I love that song!
A little too crunchy for some at times, but so great. They've never come close to this ever since. There are 28 full tracks, 2 hours and maybe 4-5 stinkers, so I'll give them a pass on those and call this the honor roll it is.
9/10, de mis albumes favs. seria 10/10 facil si no durara 2 hrs
Man, it seems cliche to like this album, but it's still really good. Super enjoyed it.
Done this one before, but here's the review I did last time: I had this on cassette at the time. I know it has about 5 of my favourite songs of all time on it. I remember skipping a lot of it as an 11 year old though, so I don't actually know if it is a good album. The joy is I love or really like the first 10 tracks, and it's only at Galapagos that it starts to lull at all - and even then, it's an okay song. If they had stopped at track 10, they would have made a classic album already. I'd add it's also an ambitious one. If they had stuck to their lane, Bullet With Butterfly Wings and Zero would make it a classic up there with Siamese Dream. But the gentle piano intro and Tonight Tonight show that they were trying to go bigger and more wide-screen here. However, at this middle point I can see the second half of an album looming with not much I know there, and I am unsure they can sustain the pace here - though with 1979 to look forward to, it may still be okay! Honestly, the second half lags a bit compared to the first, but still contains 33, 1979, and We Only Come Out at Night. If this had been a single album, or even a 20 track double album, it'd be revered. And frankly, I can't blame it for its ambition. Very few albums ever have this much quality on them, it's getting five stars in spite of its flaws, as I'd give Sign O The Times and the White Album the same courtesy.
Tonight tonight
Tonight tonight’s left me in tears, thanks to this i have found a new favorite song for the rest of my life. This album is incredible full of emotion that fits well during a specific time of your life. I hope things get better and that one day I will look back at this album and remember all these confusing emotions as a part of the distant past. Things will get better with time, im sure of it. 5 stars
Incredible album with a bunch of bangers in "Bullet with Butterfly Wings", "Zero", and "Tonight, Tonight". 9/10
Ho una profonda antipatia per Billy Corgan, ma questo è un capolavoro. E poi, c'è un pezzo che si chiama "Porcelina dei vasti oceani". Un titolo così già merita 5.
A masterpiece like this doesn't come along very often.
Did I not asked her to believe in me as I believed in her? How many times back then we felt the imposible was possible… tonight? I even considered back in the day getting a tattoo with the words “despite all my rage I’m still just a rat in a cage”… I remember how I spend years without hearing Thirty Three and then listening to it the day my girlfriend broke up with me as I pulled up my collar up and faced the cold on my own… (it was April tho lol). I remember singing to Lilly (my one and only) the stray dog we briefly housed so many years ago… this album has always been with me. I was 8 at the time it came out. Would this album be as praised if it was only say, 10 songs long? I do think so. The hits are just that massive but the legend of the record needs for it to be 28 songs long. They say Corgan locked himself in an hotel room and came out with all of those songs… I know some of them are not worth it and for that this should be a 3 or a 4 but damn those hits are timeless and beyond greatness.
A wonderful colossal!
Wow. I've been dismissing SP so long due to comments about Corgan's voice but now finally give it a chance and it absolutely blew me. This is truly a melancholy album despite not having a sad instrumental. Every songs here are phenomenal, the first six especially. I feel like Stumbleine (or even the whole second half) is underrated. Looking forward to be listening more of SP. Shiny, 26/10/22
8/8 worlds vampired
Over two hours of music! It should count for two albums, and I wouldn't mind, if both of them were on this list. I'm very surprised by The Smashing Pumpkins, I always thought its a soft rock band, but they had some power, energy and rage to it! I really liked the album, I will definitely listen tocthis again, unfortunately I don't have more time to write more than that. Easy 5.
A classic for me, personally, even though it can be a bit long on the latter half. Definitely has a lot of nostalgia bound up in it.
Yea
Another fantastic album from the Smashing Pumpkins! It has many classics that I know well from "Rotten Apples" but I didn't have this album as a teenager so I don't think I have ever listened to the album as a whole before. Listening to the whole thing is quite an undertaking at over 2 hours in length but the album explores such a wide range of styles that none of the 28 songs seem like filler. At the end of it all, you feel emotionally exhausted (in a good way)
An ambitious masterpiece! Not sure this needed to be a double album, but many great songs throughout
First album I ever bought my self. Listened to this so many times and I'm still not bored of it
I love The Smashing Pumpkins. My mom used to listen to them all the time when I was a kid. Mellon Collie has gotten many a happy listen from me
Okay, so this is obviously obscenely long. But I'm not even mad because it's consistently pretty fucking great.
What a masterpiece. songs like Tonight, Tonight, Bullet with Butterfly Wings or Thirty-Three will stay with me forever 9/10
amazing, so many different emotions, all over the place but still cohesive
a 5
6 hours!?!
Definitely dig the album. Not sure it is my fav of theirs though
Finalmente me dediquei e me presenteei com a audição do disco duplo do a sequência de diferentes formas do rock na essência.
Excellent album.. tunes for the soul
Too long, not everything hits, has multiple personalities… reminds me a bit of my favourite Beatles album. HL: 1979, Tonight, Thru the Eyes…and more Mellon Collie: August 20th, listening while walking downtown The infinite sadness: August 21st, commuting to work
two sp albums??? Yayyy
jaaaa
Perfection.
It's a long record, that's for sure, but personally this is probably the closest to be a perfect double-album in the CD era. It's not just the songs - the single from this record are hugely iconic and timeless (Tonight, Tonight, 1979, Zero, Bullet with Butterfly Wings) - but it's a record's record in the sense that each track flows to another seamlessly, rising, and falling, yet remaining interesting throughout. There's gentle, there's aggressive, the production is impeccable, James Iha's guitars are unique and wonderful - balancing virtuosity, with style. Chamberlain's drums are pounding and tight, and gorgeous sounding. The way the entire double album is bookended with a piano theme is iconic - and the energy is balanced perfectly throughout. Lyrically it gets a bit twee, but not too embarrassingly so - and it doesn't yet feel dated. I remember listening to this when it was released - one of the first albums I really discovered and loved - and nothing this band did before or since matches up to it - so it's a fluke, and one that should be honored. And yes, it's Billy Corgan, and yes it's the 90s and yes, there is a lot of space for mockery - but musically, this record holds.
The day after I got Siamese Dream, the generator gave me Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and I'm happy it did. Mellon Collie is significantly better in my mind. I had heard it a long time ago but never really revisited it as I wasn't a big Smashing Pumpkins fan. It is a lot more diverse stylistically and sonically from song to song than Siamese Dream is. I feel there is a lot more emotion in the songs too. This is an album I will be coming back to although it is a little long for my liking at around 2 hours. I believe this album also features the best song they ever made in "1979". The Smashing Pumpkins have never been one of my favorites, but this album is undoubtedly excellent, rightfully revered as a classic and may have changed my mind about them in general after my first re-listen in years. Favorite Songs: "1979", "Tonight, Tonight", "Zero", "Bullet With Butterfly Wings", "We Only Come Out At Night"
Discazo
Al is dit album meer dan 2 uur lang, toch verveelt het niet door het aanboren van veel verschillende genres. Ik kende enkel de singles uit dit album, maar de rest -kalm, hevig, melodieus,...- is ook erg goed
1 x (9+7) +9 /5=🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Plus Tonight, tonight!
It's funny to revisit this album outside of the strict religious context of my upbringing. Phrases like, "Jesus was an only sun" and "bastard son of a bastard son" were so scandalous and my mind could not spare the energy to try to understand or enjoy the songs for what they were because I was so pre-occupied with whether my parents would think that they had a corrupting influence on my soul and whether they were right. Corgan seems to have a fascination with the contrast between thrashy aggressive sounds and beautiful fragile ones. A great example is the transition to "And I give it all up to you" on an ode to no one. I think that this was a really important thing in that it created permission for people, particularly teenage boys, to enjoy music that was full of both rage and a yearning for beauty. It's trivial now, The Breakfast Club era stereotypes were so strong that it sometimes felt like you couldn't like loud aggressive music and quite pretty music. The Smashing Pumpkins did a lot for breaking that down. Muzzle is an example of this being blended rather than contrasted. Chef's kiss for the way the instruments come to life on "Where Boys Fear To Tread". The lyrics on Stumbeline.
5 fucking stars baby.
Incredible
Absolutely one of the best albums of the era
An album as big as Billy Corgan's ego. A mix of ballads, metal, indie rock, goth and everything in between. Even the terrible pun of the title can't detract from its vastness. Best Tracks: Tonight, Tonight; Bullet With Butterfly Wings; 1979
Although it falters during the last half of the second disc, the rest of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is so epic in scope, it qualifies as a masterpiece. Is it overwrought exercise in self-indulgence, as so many double albums are? Absolutely! But it fluidly moves between hugely fuzzy and bombastic, and gentle and introspective, and sometimes manages to be both at once. Like MCR would later channel Queen on The Black Parade, Smashing Pumpkins have leaped from straightforward grunge to a theatrical and grand arena rock spectacle while maintaining the angsty foundation that made them.
songs - 10/10
When I think of this band I remember a review from way back when that kind of influenced my opinion that simply said "Stop Whinging Billy". Anyway, it was nice to pay some attention and what a wonderful album. I've only ever really listened to Siamese Dream but of course knew some of the big hits from here. I do like 1979, and Zero, but there are so many songs like Porcelina Of The Vast Oceans that are also great. Thanks 1001 for changing my views.
Just as good as it was when I was 13 and first heard it. I love this album. 5/5
When I was started to comprehend pop music and rock music in the mid 90s, my recollection is that Smashing Pumpkins were a bigger deal than Pearl Jam or Soundgarden. However now they aren’t really mentioned in the same breath as them or other rock bands as the best of the 90s. I’m guilty of this too, if I had to list the top rock acts of the 90s off the top of my head, I don’t think I would have thought of Pumpkins. It’s crazy too that given how good this album is that I can’t really point to any band that ripped them off. Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness is a record I’ve always meant to listen to, maybe I hadn’t because it’s a double album and over 2 hours long; it’s a big time commitment. I now wish I had jumped into it earlier, this thing is a masterpiece and I would have worn this out. I know most of the songs on its, from Zero to Bullet With Butterfly Wings. But the other songs in between really kill it. Like Jellybelly which is going into my current rotation. Amazing work Corgan and company.
One of the greatest albums of all time
Easy five benefiting from a massive nostalgia bump. Alternating between grungy angsty alt rock and halcyon drifty dream pop, it ticks a lot of my boxes. Think I'd probably still really dig this if I was hearing it for the first time... Fave track - honesty, about a third of the album would qualify depending on my mood during that specific listen. This time around, let's say "Bodies"...
I like it
Najdraži predugi album
Good stuff from Billy Corgan. Lots of great songs and good moments. Gets a bit long winded occasionally, but still worthy of a top rating.
Rock oscuro de los Smashing Pumpkins. Varios megahits. Vinilo.
Peak of the decade, and maybe the century. Incredible music through both albums.
One of the best
I unironically love this album, and have for 15+ years.
Buff, este disco lo machaqué de tanto oírlo. Al final como Billy Corgan empezó a decir tonterías en épocas recientes le cogí manía al grupo y un poco a su música. ► Del primer disco me gustan: "Tonight, Tonight","Jellybelly","Zero","Here Is No Why","Bullet with Butterfly Wings","Cupid de Locke","Muzzle" y "Take Me Down" (Qué bueno es James Iha!!!). ► Del segundo disco: "Bodies","Thirty-Three","1979","Stumbleine","We Only Come Out at Night","Lily (My One and Only)" y "Farewell and Goodnight". Volviendo a escucharlo con detalle veo que me gustan más las canciones más tranquilas y pop. Un gran disco doble que refleja una época desde una ciudad diferente a Seattle.
Phantasmagoria of dreamscapes and nightmares, rollicking guitars and ferocious drums, lullabies and funeral processions, marching towards uncertainty and dread. Unstoppable, immovable, and downright unmatchable. Wanna go for a ride.
CD
One of the best double albums of all time.
Esse é PICA
Listened to this a lot in the 90's. Great album
Rock oscuro de los Smashing Pumpkins. Varios megahits. Vinilo.
Beautiful.
literally wtf thought it was gonna be interesting but no... they give me this. what the hell
As much as I can't stand Billy Corgan this is an incredible album.
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is probably the best album of The Smashing Pumpkins, I just like Siamese Dream better. But my opinion is rather irrelevant as both albums are a fantastic and five star choice. This very lengthy albums is one of the exceptions that confirm the rule that albums should not be too long. This one is long, but not too long. The large number of songs make it possible to explore various styles and genres (while still maintaining a high quality). Highlights are of course "Bullet with Butterfly Wings", "Tonight, Tonight" and "1979", though the greatness of this album is the fact that all of the songs are interesting at least and good most of the time. I know the voice of Billy Corgan is an acquired taste, but just learn to love it. It is worth the effort.
It was aight.
Huge anthems, skipping mush and fillers. The strings play a huge part
This album is way heavier than I remember it being (in parts). XYU almost feels like a Sabbath song. Overall, I feel like Siamese Dream had more of my favourites on it but this album was a solid listen with just a little bit of filler. That’s impressive for a double album Favourite tracks: “Zero” “Jellybelly” “X.Y.U.” “1979”
enjoyed the piano intro. track 2 is great, definitely one i'll get some mileage out of. up to track 5 now and enjoying everything so far. plus, track 5 is one of the best so far. ohh, track 6 is where that rat in a cage line comes from lol. tracks 10 & 11 are my kind of thing. porcelina is a banggeerrrr ! oh, take me down is lovely as well. this album is really interesting - the varied sounds all balance each other out really nicely. 1979 is obviously a classic. thru the eyes of ruby is great. nearly teared up at the outro of that song, it was so unexpected and beautiful. we only come out at night is great too. now i think that's enough track-by-track lol. overall i really enjoyed this album. i found it really interesting, engaging, and at times unexpectedly soft and pretty. there were some points where i found the vocals grating, e.g. 'in the arms of sleep'... but the vocal and instrumental performances across the album were overall good to great (instrumentally, mostly great). i feel this was a really good album to start with as well, since i'm not overly familiar with rock music in general and this album is so sprawling and touches on a lot of different sounds. 3.9/5
Smashing pumpkins always sounded like something Nigel Thornberry would say. Never listened to them as far as I'm aware. 1) Gentle piano opener. Technically competent. 2) **** [Tonight] Oh, pretty sure I have actually heard this one. The music is great, nice soaring strings. Those vocals are definitely an acquired taste. 3) ** [Jellybelly] Thrashy instrumentation. Can I swap the vocalist out? This would be way better with some gutteral growls. Or someone with pipes. Feel bad for the band this song is excellent otherwise. 4) **** [Zero] Heavy. Really like the drums. Fuzzy. The vocals are a bit more hidden in the mix. I like the bridge riff. 5) *** [Here is no why] Kinda dreamy vibes. Reminds me of something that might have come out around mid 2000s. 6) ***** [Bullet With Butterfly Wings] - Southern rock? Lars ulric drumming. Almost nu-metal. Has good energy. Vocals waay better when he's yelling rather than "singing". 7) ** [To Forgive] Organ led Ballard. It's a nice change of pace. Nothing inherently wrong with it. 8) **** [An Ode to No One] Tempo shift. More punk-y. The riff is kind of anxiety inducing. A crescendo song. 9) *** [Love] Space rock. 10) ** [Cupid de Locke] - Art rock. Tells a story. Harp? is a nice tone/riff. 11) * [Galapogos] - Does sound like I'm on an island. Shame Billy's singing. 12) *** [Muzzle] Alternative rock track. Perfectly listenable. 13) ***** [Porcelina of the Vast Oceans] Pink floyd worship? Dreamy fantasy vibes. Can see this being one of my favourites. It's very dynamic. 14 ** [Take Me Down] Oh. They found a different singer? An acoustic closer. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Side A Experimental, varied, prefer the heavier tracks. The vocals are difficult when they are put to the fore on the calmer songs. Need a break. Overall: 3/5 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) *** [Where Boys Fear to Tread] - Aww I thought it was going to be an instrumental only piece. Would make a nice grungy/post rock ditty. do-do-do-do! 16) *** [Bodies] Proto KoRn energy. I like the drumming on this one. 17) *** [Thirty-Three] Acoustic, dreamy pop returns. A great contrast to bodies. 18) ** [In the Arms of Sleep] - Floaty rock. 19) ** [1979] - Appears to be one of their more popular tracks, for me this is quite sparse feeling. 20) ***** [Tales of a Scorched Earth] Opening riff captured my attention and brought me back awake after the last two tracks. Appeals to my metal sensibilities. 21) *** [Thru the Eyes of Ruby] - Dreamy Grunge. Enjoy the crescendo's pre chorus. Quite a lot of the tracks on this album have a soothing, wistful quality. This contrasts well with the heaviness. 22) * [Stumbleine] Acoustic track. Feels a bit like something the guy with a guitar would sing at a party. Probably more soothingly than Billy. 23) ****** [X.Y.U.] Desert rock/stoner! Lets go. Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees. Save me from the ballards! The section from 4:20 is SUBLIME. 24) **** [We Only Come Out at Night] I am a vampire and I've lost my fangs. Finally a new song for the Halloween playlist. Feels like a 60s/70s ditty. Beatles-esque - the vocals are very good (a rarity). 25) ***** [Beautiful] Cute song, nice duet with D'arcy. Can't she sing more often? Feels like it belongs in a coming of age movie. 26 *** [Lily (My One and Only)] Wait - when did we enter the Beatles zone? Track 24? Not too much going on here. Some nice piano twinkliness. 27 * [By Starlight] Ok, we are winding right down now. Feels like a radiohead or coldplay song. Very passive. DEAD EYES - nearing the end now. 28 **** [Farewell and good night] - The end. D'arcy is back. Nice duet by them again. The piano adds a element. Hypnotic/drone-y rhythms soothe. Feels like when the boys used to fall asleep on me. The fading to just piano at the end is beautiful. Part 2: 3.5/5 (rounding up) Vocals are better on the calmer songs. Or Billy is growing on me. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Overview: Inject [X.Y.U.] into my veins. That's the jam on this album. Now, this was a mission to complete. Breaking it in two definitely helped. There are a few songs that did nothing for me, a few that were really good and then a proportion that I'd happily listen to, but not choose to. This is a hard one to give an overall rating to. I don't think I'd put the full album on again so by my own rules it maxes at a 3. ....Yet, I think I just might one day. Who knows, maybe Billy's vocals will grow on me.
Major achievement for 1990’s
A great album, conceptually large and musically diverse
The Smashing Pumpkins were a band that never really clicked with me, so I'm surprised that it's the 2-hour album that's really showing me their strengths. They cover just about the whole spectrum of alternative rock from the 1990s on here, and they do it really well on just about every song too! Seems like I need to go back and give Siamese Dream another shot...
This is my second time listening front to back and I am again surprised I never had a Smashing Pumpkins phase in my youth. I can't believe how stacked this album is and it very nearly justifies its marathon length. They try so many things it's amazing how many of them land successfully. A pleasure.
This was a staple of my teen years, fantastic album especially for someone with such a grating voice.
Wow, that was a lot. I actually put it off for a few days after I generated it because the idea of listening to something for 2 hours that day wasn't appealing. I remember a few of these songs from when they came out in the mid-90s. I liked it for the most part. There was a lot of heavy metal/grunge, but also some nice ballads and occasional orchestra sounds. I think Mellon Collie could actually be split into 3 separate albums (that could be released different times, not all at once), especially since there are some 7-9+ minute songs. Once I got through "Muzzle" I felt like I would have been completely satisfied if that concluded the record. Don't get me wrong, I liked the rest after that, but I just felt like this was a lot to take in at one time.
thank you for the tunes Ms. Collie. 4/5
I love this album, but will admit the quality of the second disc drops a bit from the first. Ultimately this means it cant be a five but is still a strong four. The singles off this album are insanely good. ‘Bullet..’ is a masterpiece with tracks like ‘tonight tonight’ and ‘1979’ not far behind. This is such an ambitious grandiose affair it has to be on a list like this ❤️
For some reason, Billy Corgan not having a good voice doesn't bother me like it does with other vocalists....go figure. I'm not a huge fan, but this was a very good listen. Another listener said that this didn't sound "too bloated". I think that's an apt description.
I tend to think that I like the Smashing Pumpkins. And then, at some point, I try to listen to this album and there is simply no way. It's just too long. PS: go listen the AA Williams's versión of Porcelina of the Vast Oceans if you haven't.
Overall pretty good, just super long and doesn’t feel the most cohesive. Like there’s some hard rock some soft rock. But overall the songs that are good are so good. My fav song is where boys fear to tread
Just some classic 90 alt rock tracks here, each of which are still great listens. That said, it is completely unnecessary for this album to be 2 hours, and the bloat brings down the score a bit.
All time favorite
It is obviously melodramatic and the lyrics are as bad as the album title. Also, Corgan's voice is truly horrible. Still, there is enough range here to make the bloated run time worthwhile.
It’s one of those defining records of the nineties. Many songs trigger heavy nostalgia. My biggest objection is that two hours of Billy Corgan is a bit demanding. His voice is not easy on the ear
Another example of artist I knew little of but eagerly studied as this record came into my roster. Did you know "smashing" is meant to be an adjective, not a verb? So it's the "excellent" pumpkins. Wow. Bit long, two hours is a lot of music to listen to. Luckily I enjoyed it.
This has some of the highest highs in any of the projects I've listened to this far, I love Thirty-Three so much. But... it's also two hours long and drags in a lot of places, unfortunately. Still, I get the hype and understand why so many people love this
Was not expecting such a heavy sound. Nor was I expecting two bloody hours of album. All the songs kind of blend together in my mind. But it's a nice blend. Like a cream of pumpkin soup. Tonight 200/10. The rest 6/10.
Nice and grungy, Tonight, Tonight is a classic. Like some of the slower songs a lot.
Long time since I listened to this album. A good album to start this journey. Billy Corgan sounds like a squealing pig.
Smashing!
Легчайшая 4ка, альбом понравился и почти без фатига, но всетаки 2 часа это много, иди он около 70-80 минут была бы 5ка, но это кайфовый альбом
Some generational hits here. For as popular as it was (is?), I don't think I had ever actually listened all the way through though. Some nice discoveries, some that will be easier to skip next time through now that I've heard them, but overall, a lot of great music here - even if it's not something that I'll reach for regularly.
The question is really: How much Billy Corgan can you handle in one sitting? Mellon Collie definitely tests that limit. It's a great record obviously and there's not a single bad moment. But it's length doesn't do it justice. And it's a tiny bit frontloaded for me. But will definitely return
This album is great and has so many good songs. There are a few that they could have skipped to make it a perfect album.
URGHHH AAAHH YES PLEASE
I absolutely love The Smashing Pumpkins! This album is great… A little bit too long but it has so many different sounds and so much creativity. Would definitely listen to this again.
Despite being pretty long, there's a lot of variation and I really enjoy Billy Corgan's unique vocals. It's 90s grunge I know and love.
I really enjoyed it!
Could have been a killer album instead of great double album.
My god when I saw it was 2hrs I was like tf. I did have to listen to it in two different sessions. I really liked it though! The album cover is sooo beautiful :D I appreciated both the rock and ballad songs, but I definitely loved the ballads more. There was something very beautiful and melancholic (haha) about the ballads. "Take Me Down" was absolutely gorgeous. I think it is one of my favorite songs of all time now; it hurt to try not to put it on loop, I kept coming back to it. I don't know, it was just very beautiful. Fave songs: Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, Tonight, Tonight, Jelly Belly, Zero, To Forgive, Cupid de Locke, Galapgos, Porcelina Of The Vast Oceans, Take Me Down, Where Bous Fear to Tread, Stumbleine, By Starlight, Farewell and Goodnight
A lot of good stuff here and a lot of nostalgia - a bit too long and forced to be a 5 star, but still great!
Great Instrumentation, dramatic and energetic rock music for me
me gustó demasiado pero es excesivamente largo de verdad
If I found this album when I was 16, it would probably be one of my favorites. This album is for the sadboi's sadboi. They lyrics are so fucking good. They're so fire sometimes I forget that I think the lead singer's voice is annoying. And they sprinkled in a little rage too. Can't complain. Only reason this doesn't get a 5 is that it should've been 2 separate albums. Idc. No reason for it to be this damn long. Highlights: Here Is No Why, Thru The Eyes Of Ruby
Really good album. Cant complain when you get two hours of music that isnt filled with crap. Once you get over his voice, the rest works.
Lo tiene todo. 6h de pura magia. Insane que este álbum es del 95. Amé.
Impressive that they managed an album this long while keeping the quality fairly consistent throughout. Big fan of the songs when the strings come in. Favourite tracks: Tonight, Tonight, Zero, Galapagos, 1979
good
Listened to this during a 9 hour road trip, so I didn’t have as many complaints about the length as I may have otherwise. It did get a little bit too repetitive for me by the end, but overall this one was a surprise. Anyone who was at music trivia may know that I am not very familiar with this band as I was unable to identify them by appearance or sound, but this will hopefully be my inspiration to learn more.
The length is always intimidating, but this is a rewarding album to sit down and listen to. So many different textures across each song that it always keeps me entertained. “Tonight, Tonight” is a perfect song.
I had never listened to this entire album, so I’m glad I finally listened to the whole thing. I’ve obviously heard the singles, and I generally enjoy The Smashing Pumpkins, but some of their songs are slower and not my favorites. A double album is daunting, which is probably why I never listened to the whole thing, but this album kept me on my toes. It was a little all over the place, going from a grunge song, to a slower ballad, to a heavy metal song, but I really enjoyed it. The last handful of songs were somewhat forgettable, but it could be that I was worn down from listening to an hour and a half. With that said, this was a very good album.
fuck you. Fuck you. i'm listening to this shit tomorrow i can't be fucking arsed. update: as it turns out i underestimated the distance from NYC to RVA (as wont to do). to quote mr incredible: yeah. i got time. see prior siamese dream review. 10-15 songs: tonight tonight, zero, bullet, to forgive, love (thank god for james iha), cupid de locke (near all timer), porcelina, take me down, in the arms of sleep, 1979, stumbline, we only come out at night, by starlight, farewell and goodnight jellybean + tales of a scorched earth show why keeping the involuntary manslaughter drummer was worth it. galapagos needs a better final chorus. muzzle needs cleanup. where boys + bodies (more oomph) have a really good riff. that's about it. thirty three is dece but i've unfortunately listened to 4 songs like it. eyes of ruby is two minutes too long. xyu is like if you had to cheat writing zero but changed it up so it wasn't too obvious. beautiful + lily just sounds like b sides (the whole second half gets lyrically weaker tbh). 3.7-4.4. this album would be sensational if i'd hadn't listened to 80s u2 before 13.
Lot to unpack here, huge amount of variation and never got boring for a double album. Seems to owe a lot to grunge but has a very unique sound, will listen again
I’ve listened to this album before and liked most of the songs but this time it clicked. The contrast between the more gothic/aggressive and the quieter songs is very unique and well done. Some songs in the album have lead me to discover other genres I would have not otherwise listened to. The vocals are impressive in both diversity and quality. This albums has some very interesting and addictive guitar riffs.
Surprisingly not all doom and gloom
I love a big, fat double album. Take me on a journey, musicians! This was particularly ambitious and mostly fun. As with a lot of doubles, it's not all great. There's some brilliant songs on here though. All of the singles were 90s classics. It definitely adds up to more than its parts by having so much variety. Great Cover Art.
A heavy experience
In the nineties, I found the rock music of the time a bit alienating. None of the new bands really appealed to me, and none of the new sounds really won me over. But there were, of course, some bright spots, including *Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness* by The Smashing Pumpkins. (t. b. c.)
Strong start, Tonight Tonight is an all timer Very long 1979 is amazing 4* To long Best tracks Tonight Tonight Zero An Ode To No One 1979
Great start, drags abit until 1979. No Siamese dream
- I was excited for this and I liked the start but it started getting a little aggressive and giving me anxiety, had to skip a few songs. - i like 'to forgive'. - i like 'cupid de locke' but i have heard it a million times - overall i actually didn't really like the songs i didn't already know at all
