Reviews (page 13 of 14)
Periaatteessa ihan hyvän kuuloista, mutta ei kuitenkaan tempaise millään tavalla mukaansa, pois lukien Somebody Told Me.
Tuli vanhoja muistoja mieleen.
Never have I played this album in full, never will again. Listened while at work and only made my day worse Few songs to make white middle aged people act up on a dancefloor, other than that generic, underwhelming indie sounds with the poor choice of synth...
Promenades out in the rain...you're from Vegas mate. First 5 tracks better than Oasis' entire discography, rest of the album is utter crap
I get why Mr. Brightside fills dancefloors and gets everyone singing along, but its at best alright. The rest of the album is mediocre. Songs are well crafted, but dreary, uninteresting, and generic. It’s like someone took Interpol, stripped away everything interesting and shoved a synthesizer in.
Some decent singles. Album derivative and drags
1. Jenny - 1 2. Brightside - 2 3. Smile - 1 4. Told - 2.5 5. Things - 1 6. Andy - 1 7. Top - 1.5 8. Mind - 1 9. Natalie - 1 10. Midnight - 1 11. Alright - 1 12. Indie - 0
Loud sadboi music maybe I need to give it another shot
2/5
Mr.Brightside album. Not really my jam but had a couple cool songs.
background music
Jenny Was A Friend - Very solid. Nothing apart from the bass really stood out to me, but still a very solid opener. 7/10 Mr. Brightside - It's Mr. Brightside. 10/10 Smile Like You Mean It - Could easily see this one being played in the background at a Khols or something like that. Sounds very safe. Good, but safe. 7/10 Somebody Told Me - Groovy. Packs a bit more of a punch. Would dance to it if heard at a party. 8/10 All These Things That I've Done - I got soul, but am not, in fact, a soldier. Could easily see this playing over a shot of the main character driving down a freeway towards an unknown but comfortable future as the credits roll. 7/10 Andy, You're A Star - Killers + slow = eh. 5/10 On Top - Think I heard this one a few weeks ago in an outlet mall. 6/10 Change Your Mind - Drums were pretty cool. 7/10 Believe Me, Natalie - Kinda unique-sounding with the horns and reggae-ish drums. 7/10 Midnight Show - Electric guitar gets the spotlight. Could see a college band playing this at a party. Would dance to if heard. A shining light amidst a sea of meh. 8/10 Everything Will Be Alright - Slow, generic, bleh. 3/10 Glamorous Indie Rock and Roll - Again, Killers + slow = eh. 5/10 Overall, 6/10. Without Mr. Brightside, 5/10. Not bad, just much more average than I was hoping. Was expecting this to be "Mr. Brightside, The Album" but instead got "Mr. Brightside and some songs you would hear in the background of a Khols". I'm personally not a big fan of the slower, more vibey stuff, which is a decent chunk of this album. Competent, but would probably listen to other rock albums before this one.
one killer track. the rest is compressed noise
I see the time and place, but best ever, no. The generator is not being kind.
Highlight: Smile Like You Mean It, Mr Brightside. In a nutshell: the Achtung Baby of the new millennium. Over twenty years on, Hot Fuss is still poppy and bombastic. Also, a let down. There is so much filler surrounding two (maybe three) tracks! Mr Brightside still resonates, as does Somebody Told Me (despite both being overplayed at sport matches worldwide. I can do without the latter). The Killers also remind me of early Muse and The Strokes for some reason. Overall: 4/10
Nicht meine Musik. Es blieb wenig bis überhaupt nichts hängen.
If you don't think the Killers are christian rock, you're not paying attention. This music is so vapid and skin deep. Just goes to show you what stays culturally relevant because unimpressive white dudes need a song to sing at karaoke.
In 2004 I was the world's biggest Opeth fan, so this band has escaped me entirely. They will continue to escape me, because other than the interesting bass line in the first song, it's boring me to tears. The vocalist has no range whatsoever and it was as if I was listening to the same song over and over again.
Duran Duran kinda sound
Heard them live a few years ago on InMusic in Zagreb. Maybe if I was a teenager, I would've stayed for Mr.Brightside as they closed the set, but luckily I was making out with my gf on our way back to the apartment.
Was cool to hear the big songs, cause I didn’t know they were from this artist or album Edit Apr 5 2026: 3 --> 2. I'm just not that fond of this album
eeeee
I've spent far too much of my life trying to figure out why people like this so much. I even went to see them at Leeds festival were they were boring and utterly blown away when the pixies came on after them. Don't get me wrong Mr brightside is amazing, somebody told me is a pretty solid track. After that however... There are like 2 others which show promise but the choruses are so ploddy. I used to think I hated his voice, or his delivery, maybe it's a bit of that, but it's also the choice of lower register in the choruses and the slowness of them. It loses all the momentum built up in the verses. I should say that they have some great bass and synth lines The second half of the album is largely forgettable and I couldn't tell you much about it. The last song however I know because I just don't believe him, if he really liked indie rock and roll he'd have put more passion into it. I appear to have been proven right by their future albums moving away from that genre. I find myself singing bits of them later which tries to trick into thinking they were good. While I'm over analysing this can someone explain. I've got soul but I'm not a soldier. Catchy word play and all, but is he suggesting that all soldiers have soul? That only soldiers have soul? Maybe I don't have soul.
I didn't like this album because I've found it really boring and predictable. I listen to some post-punk revival albums from the early 00s but this was disappointing. It was not annoying or that bad, just simply boring and not interesting.
Na
I shouldn't hate this, but I unfortunately do .. it's probably not their fault entirely, but one of my first flames really tried to push them on me and it was a right turn off...
Christian music thinly disguised with a rock veneer…..nope I do like smile like you mean it so it won’t be a one star review Aside from the above it’s just a bland slab of boring mediocre rock
Boooooooring 4/10
I've been tired of Mr. Brightside for about 7 years now. The Rest is really uninteresting. Reminds me of Red Hot Chili Peppers. 3/10
Meh.
This smells like the 2000s and puberty... in a bad way
I liked it for a while - but it got a little long and lost me in the second half.
Death to Indie Rock. Listen to Queen Bitch instead.
i find the killers to be music for people who want to like good music but don't know how or where to start, so they like the killers. sure there are 2 good songs here so i will give it a reluctant 2 but really i could not wait for this to end.
Good start, with the hit singles, but it definitely starts to drag a bit in the second half.
you say its got hits, i say its got shits
Probably not gonna play it by myself but its fine
Catchy, forgettable radio hits and some filler. Calculated music for calculated people. It’s like the shirt that looked cool on the rack at the mall but fell apart after the first wash.
I used to own this album, shortly after it came out. I liked how the leadoff track thrusts a bass riff and synth to the fore and I enjoyed the song "Smile Like You Mean It," which has a cool '80s new wave vibe. The rest never really grew on me, and I traded in my CD. The end.
I'd heard the two singles which are okay. The rest of this did nothing for me. Also The Killers is one of the possible names considered in the Mountain Goats song "The Best ever death metal band out of Denton" and I can't hear this band without thinking that the Mountain Goats are a much better band.
I still have no idea what "I've got sould but I'm not a soldier" is supposed to mean. Catchy, though. Aside from that track, though, not really sure why this album is on the list. It's fine. It's alright.
Always thought the band were massively overrated, and after tracks wondered if I was just hater. However, for me the quality of the album quickly dips after "All These Things We've Done" and rarely recovers aside from a few bright spots within otherwise bland tracks. 2.5 from me Clive.
Ok
I’m gonna preface this review with the fact that I do not care for The Killers. I’d go as far as to say that Mr Brightside is probably my most hated song, I’m so sick of hearing it. With that out of the way, I didn’t mind this album. I didn’t hate it like I thought it would and tbh, Somebody Told Me is a banger. I saw a review on here saying that the second half of the album is filler and it certainly felt that way.
nice to listen to this album beyond just the meme. that said, nothing especially stood out to me - good or bad. 2.5- incredibly mid
Every song is rather generic, no outstanding lyrics or riffs. It all sounds the same and I don't remember one song after listening to the entire album.
I did not enjoy this. It was completely forgettable. Not for me.
Couple of decent songs but otherwise aggressively meh
Over rated
The Killers' sound just doesn't appeal to me. The guitar is predominantly used to create a wash of sound that isn't very interesting (this is especially exaggerated on "On Top"). It is the equivalent of a pianist playing with the sustain pedal constantly, making any sounds that might be novel or unique when differentiated instead blend with each other to the point that everything sounds the same. A side effect of this is that oftentimes the songs feel like they aren't going anywhere at all. This alone isn't enough to condemn the album completely, but it also isn't worth trying to pick out individual lines from the bass because it's only present to meld with the over-blended tones of the guitar. The snyth adds an interesting element on occasion, but the Killers constantly return to this washed-out blend of dull harmonies. So then we're left with the drums and vocals. The drums are fine and hardly worth mentioning, though they really are the only thing keeping the songs moving forward and preventing complete stagnation. And the vocals. The vocals... feature an overused vocal effect that is most evident on "Everything Will Be Alright." Sure, it makes the sound of Hot Fuss almost immediately recognizable, but in my opinion, it also contributes significantly to the issues I note above. Because all of Brandon Flower's vocals are produced with this effect, it causes any expressive vocal choices that might otherwise stand out to sound too much alike. I will say "Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine" ever so slightly stood out from the other tracks, with its synth riff supported by bass interjections that made it a bit more interesting to listen to. Then of course there's "Mr. Brightside," which still suffers from many of the issues above but at least has a constant rhythm pushing us forward in the moving synth, upbeat tempo, and lyrics. But really it's hard to remember anything else from Hot Fuss because it all blends together.
Liked it more than I initially thought, also wasn't aware this was the album with Old Man
Boring, honestly. It put me to sleep I fear.
Went in fully expecting to love this and was sorely disappointed. As I suspected, this is one of the most ridiculously frontloaded albums I've ever heard, and the first five tracks aren't even that great barring Somebody Told Me (which deserves all the praise), and Mr. Brightside (although that has grown off of me through overplay). The rest? Totally forgettable new wave influenced pop rock with all the edges sanded off. Not terrible, but I don't really see myself listening to this again in the near future. If the book wanted to highlight the explosion of popularity that Post Punk Revival bands experienced, I feel like Interpol's Turn on The Bright Lights (even if I prefer its immediate followup Antics) would've been a far stronger entry. It might not have had quite the commercial exposure that Hot Fuss has had, but TOTBL has made up for it with sheer critical and fan legacy,
ts so mid 💔 mr brightside is here
The kind of album that makes you tired. It sucks all your energy and makes it difficult for you to think of the reason why. Does convey a kind of rebellious teen spirit that is somewhat enjoyable, but overall not my fave
Kei bal maar wel kut muziek
Never been crazy about the killers and listening to this in full for the first time did not really sway me. Still feel a little nostalgic for the sound though.
ah shit ezt hends mich verwütscht, ezt bini tod, hey nei mer mues ebe scho ufpasse wasmer macht, es chan so schnell gah und mer denkt immer eim selber chan ja nüt passiere aber denn wachtmer ah somene mentig morge uf, loset zerst mal nos böb günyadin album vom weekend wellmers natürlich wider nöd gschafft hett und den BAM! eimal killers id fressi ine unds lebe isch verbi generell hani scho eh chlini past mit dene gfährliche dudes... sind nämlich uf eusere version vo singstar gsi und ich han "human" und "spaceman" als chind hert abgfiiret - sind aber leider beidi nöd uf dem album druffe, was füren jammer drum muesi da au hert blibe und dene tödliche buebe nachträglich für mini prekäri situation da im afterlive no eis inewürge 2 PÜNKT IHR PENNERS, HAN SCHO FERIE UF BERLIN UND DEN HAAG BUECHET GHA DAS WUCHENEND UND EZT BINI TOD!!!!!
58/1001 - I should have realized this earlier but I now know this list isn't a "here are albums that influenced music list" or anything like that. To be fair, it is harder to determine which albums have more "staying power" the closer it gets to the present day and music today in the 20s is in a weird place societally. I don't like this album but I respect the musicianship and competency of the musicians.
Spewing four massively successful singles, and 'Jenny Was a Friend of Mine,' Hot Fuss is Hot Mess at the same time that it's cultural touchstone. Primarily 'Brightside,' tho really the overall texture of the record, is etched in our subconscious whether we like it or not. I don't like it, since Brandon Flowers has got me missing Robert Smith, his voice even more gratingly loud and uninteresting. The lyrics are nowhere in particular, and misspend the potential of the best song: 'I got soul, but I'm not a soldier.' Pop music doesn't have to mean anything, but it shouldn't propose empty signifiers. So for this one, it never started out w/ a kiss, but it sure did end w/ an upset stomach. Really, it should always be on the back burner.
People seem to like it but for me it’s just alright
I like Mr. Brightside but the rest of the album is a little doo doo
1 or 2 good song, everything other is monotone and boring.
They had me on like two songs, but it’s just not for me.
Of course a band with the most boring name will make the most boring rock music possible
This seems like a completely manufactured band, but I guess they aren't. The second song was on a Madden soundtrack back in the day, I believe. It was my least favorite song on that soundtrack. I don't like these vocals. The band is good at their instruments. I don't know, everything on this album gives me the urge to run to the nearest restroom and release feces all over the place. And for that, I'll give it a #2. On Top was my favorite, but not the vocals.
not my style ….. opsie
Overrated. The popular songs were ok. Catchy. But not exciting. The rest was forgettable 2/5
If I had to choose only one word it rate it with it'd be overrated - quite a common theme on this website tbh How Mr Brightside is as popular as it is baffles me. It's mediocre AT A PUSH, and I blame every karaoke bar, radio station and shitty house party for decimating it even further Most of the "hits" on this album are a similar case, but the opening track and Somebody Told Me are admittedly pretty decent The rest - the filler, I guess - is just forgettable. I appreciate Everything Will Be Alright for being different, but it was still not anything special
Everything kinda ran together for me. Shoutout to Mr. Brightside, Somebody Told Me, and Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll for being my faves on this album.
bro is really just naming different people the whole time 2.5 maybe the most mediocre album i've ever heard
The singles from The Killers debut were an inescapable part of the musical landscape during my final years in high school. I didn’t really like the album then, and that hasn’t changed 20 years later. While the hooks on the singles are catchy, having lived through the release of this album it’s hard to say whether that’s an objective quality or one based on those songs’ ubiquity during that period of my life. If I had to pick a song that I liked, “Smile Like You Mean It” is the best song on the album, tho I def won’t listen to it again voluntarily. I was pleasantly surprised by the soul-infused rock on the second half of “All These Things That I’ve Done”, and I appreciate the stylistic and production choices on “Everything Will Be Alright”, but like all of The Killers music it is cancelled out by Brandon Flowers mediocre songwriting and a voice that, while technically sound, lacks anything of interest for me, and feels vacant of any effective emotional character. And that delay chorus effect that defined his vocals performances on this album is a bold choice, its used to excess on nearly every track rendering it exhausting. As a big fan of the long arcs of dance punk and post punk, the influence those genres have on their sound is obvious, but their execution falls flat when compared to other bands around this time that successfully build on those same aesthetics — the most striking of which were debut records by The Strokes, The Rapture, Frank Ferdinand, and LCD Soundsytem to name a few, all of which I still love to this day.
Yeah I'd cheat on this dude if I had to hear his douchey mid 2000's VH1 vocals daily Kinda baffled at how polarizing this one is in the global ratings, it's kinda hard to have that strong of an opinion on it
Definitively mid radio rock. Next function I’m at where they play Mr Brightside im shooting the place up.
The killers? More like kill yourself. Liked 2 songs on here and thats it and yes they were Mr Brightside and Somebody told me. The latter always made me laugh because I've always thought it was about someone finding out there mate is dating a MtF. 2/5
visions of working at target in the summer/autmn/winter of 2004 and cameron diaz’s bad dancing in the holiday… i was gonna give it a 1 but i didnt realize that back burner tune was on this album, for some reason thought it was on their next one.. that songs good. bumps it up a star…
Good fun to listen to. But pretty unoriginal.
Phew, thought I was going to have to give this one a high score - nostalgia’s a powerful force, and this record clearly channels it for a great many people. Fortunately, with the exception of the front-loaded singles, the rest of the album is a pretty weak new wave throwback. Like the bastard child of Duran Duran and Roxy Music, but with lifeless production and totally perfunctory lyrics from one of the most nauseating frontmen tin contemporary music. The aforementioned singles have wedged themselves in every indie disco playlist for the rest of eternity. But The Killers’ debut ain’t much to write home about, and it just gets worse for their discography from here on in. I will say this, the artwork is 10/10 - an absolutely stunning shot which deserves considerable recognition and brings back some good memories. Better than the music it prefaces…
Not a fan of the little I knew of The Killers but listened anyway. Didn’t hate it but wouldn’t revisit.
Fairly boring aside from the hits. I expected a little more but I can also tell why they were so hype - and why they've fallen off from the early 00's success.
Boring sorry Can appreciate the classics tho
13/12/24 The only reason I don't want to give this 1 star is because this is not to the same ilk as Raekwon. As poor as the lyrics and the songs are, at least it's semi listenable.
Indie rock con influenze new wave. Alcuni pezzi simpatici.
I expected to like this more but I did not.
First listen. Meh. Felt like one maybe two long songs.
It’s like if The Cure had no soul (contrary to the singer’s claims).
Nothing really to this besides Mr. Bright side and Somebody told me, maybe On Top. Smile and Things are ok. A lot of songs are just ok, Brightside is the only real banger.
Heard it before. Thought it was meh then, same now. Mr Brightside and Smile Like You Mean it
Oh, man. I really liked The Killers when I was a preteen but the band doesn't stick with me as a seventeen-year-old :/ Their music is really generic, and they lost relevance a long time ago, to be honest. Vocals are kinda annoying too. They're rock for the non-rock people, along with Nickelback, Imagine Dragon, and whatever-the-hell people my age listen to these days.
Mid The instrumental is good 👍😊
A lot of hits on this but I still don't love it.
Didn't dig it. Coldplay imitating The Strokes. Synth and gospel choir were not good additions. Listenable but barely.
Some songs are just good. I hate the style though, and Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll is a dogshit song. Will I listen to again: 5%
Irriterande
This album is so aggressively bland. Realistically it's probably a 3, but owing to the critical acclaim that it simply doesn't deserve I'm punishing it.
Mid 2000s stadium rock. This is likely to be a chore. And it is. It never occurred to me before exactly how much Brandon Flowers desperately wanted to be Bono. Sure Mr Brightside is a track for the ages, but seriously dude, she's moved on, you should too.
Not really my kind of stuff I like Human by them and some of the songs here are alright, but it's not my cup of tea The mixing is very flat and compressed with a tiny soundstage and dynamics are limited. Sounds a little bit claustrophobic
A few bangers but nothing special. For me at least.
Didn't hit as well as it used to when I was younger. Lot of same same vibes to songs
I wanted to like this album, but I kept getting distracted and didn't listen to it properly. Some great bass lines going on but I kinda missed the rest as it didn't capture my attention. Stars because I like Somebody Told Me :)
Maybe ok? Kinda? I feel too old to appreciate this. I got my grumpy grandfather frump on for all but two of these tracks. And yes those are the best two tracks that everyone else raves on about. 2 stars, unlikely to revisit, not that enamored, but not hating things either.
This is the culmination of the scourge that is Britpop. Any redeeming qualities that may have been there in the beginning, anything that was maybe kinda good... that's not here.
basic and repetitive **
Still alive, and wondering what the fuss, hot or cold, is about. *yawn*
meh
forgettable
I was kinndof excited for this. Haven't had a rock band in a while. Although, I was a tad disappointed. The hits hits but the others are drastically inferior. Brandon Flowers sings like Marilyn Manson a lot. Almost like he's at the dentist and saying "ahhhhhhh" while the dentist looks in your mouth. Flowers definitely has more melody in his voice than Manson but that ahhhhhhh vocal thing is tiresome. Monotone at most times. I don't know. A bit let down. I feel like if I were to listen to this record as gain, I'd skip the filler and listen to the hits.
Has some bangers, but it's mostly forgettable.
Pretty boring stuff to be honest, but I must say, bass sounds amazing!
"Somebody Told Me" rallatus on kulunut totaalisen loppuun Radio Rockin vuodesta toiseen jatkuvalla tehosoitolla, mutta muut kappaleet olivat itselleni kohtalaisen tuntemattomia.
meh
Now is probably a good time to confess to the class that I don't like Mr. Brightside
I didn’t listen to it, but my opinion of them is poisoned by hearing goddamn Mr. Brightside thousands of times, most of them unwanted.
The sound of the mainstream in some of my formative years. Giving this 2 stars as it was less objectionable than I expected and Mr Brightside was better than I realised, but the bar was very low for both.
I remember when this came out. It was a big deal and I thought that was funny. I didn't care for it then and I don't particularly care for it now. Monotonous vocals and dumb lyrics. To be fair, I kind of like what they were trying to do, but as an album, it doesn't land for me.
Not impressed. So many people (well somebody) told me how great they are. so many people are wrong. One good track, some average stuff, and the padding. A Two just because I like Somebody Told Me!
I hate The Killers. Always have, always will. Heard it all before done better, and less irritatingly. Somebody Told Me is epitome of this. I've got soul but I'm not a soldier isn't terrible.
_sigh_ The big hits from this assaulted my teenage years, so I need to work hard to overcome my preconceived opinions "All These Things That I've Done" is the one hit I really like. I couldn't get into the latter half of this.
Jaha.
FAVO: Mr Brightside, Somebody told me
Fav tracks: Mr. Brightside, All These Things That I’ve Done Fun fact: fans of The killers are called Victims Don’t love this. Their hits are hits but I guess they’re hits for a reason. Everything else kind of blends together - whiny vocals and clanging drums. King Nun reminds me of The Killers but I like their songs better, more inventive, musically interesting, and earworming. I’ll give it another shot not in Sasha’s car’s backseat speakers but not promising tbh.
The Killers bash you over the head with those first five radio friendly / sports montage friendly / ads for airlines and cars friendly tracks and then repeat the trick with diminishing returns to the end of the album. For a group I've not consciously sought out before, I seemed to know an awful lot of their music. This is the one with the meaningless 'I got soul but I'm not a soldier' line.
Nah
Never understand the Hot Fuss for this album and I still don't. I wanted to like this because I love 80s production techniques, don't I hear any good 80s influences in this. If I want an American doing a fake British accent with vaguely post punk/new wave backing it, then I'll throw on Ministry's With Sympathy, which truly is a banger. If you actually want an 80s throwback turn down the guitars in the mix and amp up those synths. For a great example from that decade check out Chrome's BUSINESS CASUAL. The band is tight, but the vocalist sucks. Brandon Flowers shout/talk style is grating. Abstract lyrics that don't really seem to illuminate a narrative or emotion. I'm told these songs on the front half of the record were popular, but honestly, I've never heard any of these songs before. After hearing the whole album, nothing stuck with me. Like seriously, I don't hear any earworms hooks on this album, must less outright hits. I crave some vocal melody or instrumental hook that I cannot help but hum on the way out of my house and there was nothing that stuck with me. I don't hear any energy or stadium anthems. And yet, they claim they are indie rock, but are anything but. In the middling. This album just keeps revealing to me how the naughties (00's) were the worst decade of popular music over the past 75 years by a wide margin.
Lots of love on here for this one. It’s very highly rated. Personally though, apart from about 3 tracks (‘Mr Brightside’, ‘Somebody Told Me’ and ‘On Top’), I find ‘Hot Fuss’ to be a pretty average affair.
God, what a slog. In my list of lead singers whose voice I find supremely irritating, Brandon Flowers is now solidly in second place, just behind Billy Corgan.
If the whole album was danceable like “Somebody Told Me”, this might be decent, but it’s just mostly bad and forgettable.
It's been a while since I've listened to this album. I'm not a huge fan of The Killers, but will be some nostalgic fun to revisit it. This album was not as good as I remember... outside of the hits there's a lot of forgettable songs on here. 2/5
Lame ass excuse for "rock". Who likes this milquetoast crap? Literally every song sounds the same. Same tempo, key, etc.
Langweiliger Rock
Overplayed, overrated, some good songs, otherwise nah
Was ok, I think I'm desensitized to mr brightside at this point
Almost got me up to three stars with Somebody Told Me, but the rest is droney and feels empty.
The Killers scored a massive hit with this debut album, but for some reason it doesn’t seem to stick with me. I’ve only just listened to it, but I doubt that I could hum the chorus to Mr Brightside if I tried. Musically it’s somewhere between Coldplay and Zooroopa era U2, with an oddly nasal sounding vocal effect applied to lead singer Brandon Flowers on all of the songs. Ok I guess, but I probably wouldn’t listen to it again.
I was totally going to skip listening to this because I assumed I'd hate it. But then I heard track 2, "Mr. Brightside", and realized that the scene in the movie The Holiday has made me like at least that song, so I gave it a go...And then I got to that other very overplayed hit, "Somebody Told Me" and remembered I REALLY hate that song, and then I recognized/disliked the next one...Me and pop simply have a very fragile relationship.
noioso per i miei gusti.
They’re okay. Not my favorite lead vocal tone.
I get why this is on the list but, as a millenial, I am so so so bored of this sound. Mr bright side is absolutely the song of my generation but... It's overplayed for my life time
Has a few bangers, but also a bunch of shite. Would not listen to the album front-to-back really.
All these things that I've done continues to be an underappreciated banger. The rest of the album is fine, but I don't feel the need to go back and listen.
Hot Fuss I’ve never really liked the Killers, so I’ve never listened to this album before. Not that I necessarily think they are bad, there’s just something I can’t quite put my finger on that I don’t really like. I tried to put that aside and listen with an open mind. Clearly they can write some very catchy pop songs, they definitely have a knack for hooks and choruses. Mr Brightside and Somebody Told Me are great examples of this. And I have always actually liked All These Things That I’ve Done. I also like the little bass hook on Jenny was a Friend of Mine. There’s some nice bass playing throughout too. Outside of those big catchy songs though I did find it a bit dull, with a fair amount of filler. There’s a lack of dynamism and excitement and it often falls back into generic guitar pop, with some bad lyrics and not great vocals. I’m also not a fan of the sound and production which doesn’t help. Apart from the bass tone and its place in the mix it feels very very flat. I was hoping I’d get more out of it and it would grow on me on the 2nd and 3rd listens, but I kind of felt the same as the first listen, although I think I appreciated some of the keyboards/synths more the 2nd time around. Maybe it’s me and just don’t get it but I don’t think this is all that good. A couple of catchy big tunes and not a great deal else. I feel like perhaps there’s an artifice and insincerity to it that turns me off. It’s not an affected cool that you might tar The Strokes with, perhaps it’s a smugness or a kind of indie showbiz-ness. Perhaps 2 is a bit harsh considering I gave Iron Maiden 3, but I feel this is more hollow even if it’s more listenable on the surface. ⭐⭐️
good for background filler
The Killer's weren't killin' it for me. I forgot that I was familiar with this band before remembering Mr. Brightside and Somebody Told Me. I'm not that delighted to hear those songs again. Not terribly surprised this one was dropped off the main list. If I had to choose a standout it would be Jenny Was A Friend of Mine.
Best songs: Mr. Brightside, Somebody Told Me, All These Things That I’ve Done
Okay, pretty basic rock pop from the zeros, the second last song is good tho
Read one of the top reviews and he said that he didnt like the album when it came out and he still doesnt like it "18 years later". "Wow, it must be an older album then, I wonder when it came out? 97 maybe..." For the first time in my life I felt a sudden feeling of nausea from the rapid passing of time. 2004. Two thousand and four. The album is 19 years old and it came out 2004 The album itself wasnt that much my thing but I really like Somebody Told Me
Irriterande

This album was new to me, and I played through it three times. I am left underwhelmed by this identikit 'new wave' type album that never really distinguishes itself. The songs are all very similar, and on the whole none are particularly engaging (to me, at least). Inoffensive.
Front heavy with hits. I find it all a bit meh and superficial. Maybe I've heard Mr Brightside too many times. I don't think it will go down in history as a classic.
Not really my thing but I can see why it's popular. I like a lot of their contemporaries but this just doesn't do it for me. As a debut album, it's definitely a strong piece. I just find this style of rock/alternative kind of grating.
Meh
Stupid inoffensive music for the masses. Reading the Brandon Flowers is LDS makes everything make sense. Vanilla rock for a vanilla fan base.
Partly heard before Saved 3/11 Top track: Mr. Brightside
I just can’t get by the singles on this tripe. It’s worse than U2 how they get stuck in your heads
This album has some really catchy songs, which is its best attribute. It has a sort of overthetop wall of production value that doesn't stop whacking you over the head. I needed less of something (less of the vocals, please) and the band just kept coming back to bring me more. Maybe I missed the moment for this one, or maybe I wouldn't have liked it in 2004 either.
Repetitive, noisy and presumptuous
already listened but let's listen again the first 4 songs are the only good ones and then it just DIPS from there. i do not enjoy the rest, they're... mid at best. just preference obviously and, even though those 4 songs are songs i ENJOY, they are obviously outweighed by songs which i don't 5.25555555555555555555555555/10??? (some other songs were kinda somewhat good? but idk they just weren't it overall)
I did not like. Heavy
Mid
Hot Fuss is a bit of a puzzle for me. I'm not entirely sure why it earned its spot on the list. While there are a small handful of decent songs, (one of which has been slightly spoilt by my Rob's adapted lyrics – "I got toast but I'm not a toaster, I got ham but I'm not a hamster!") my overall sentiment is lukewarm. In comparison to other indie releases in 2003, like Youth and Young Manhood, Elephant, Fever to Tell, and Howl Howl Gaff Gaff, Hot Fuss does not stand out that much. It falls somewhere in the middle – not awful, but perhaps lacking the distinctiveness that makes other albums from that time more memorable. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 2.5 (Rob has caused the half marks for All These Things That I've Done) STAND OUT TRACK- Change Your Mind
Overall the album was underwhelming. I’ve heard that “Mr. Brightside” is one of my generation’s favorite songs, but I don’t have a connection with it. I did like that the bass was turned up in the mix though. 2/5 Won’t listen again
I remember people listening to this band and album by people who hadn't much knowledge of rock music in general. It was exhausting how many people thought this was somewhat of a pinnacle of good music when it is just the similar stuff that has happened before. Some catchy chorus (if that) and power chords. And if they didn't know what else to do they'd use the keyboards. But I don't want to just shit on it. A song like All the things I've done is great and all in all it can be seen as a solid release. My problem is the participation in this list. No, you don't really miss anything - not even as a negative example - when you don't listen to Hot Fuss.
I hadn't heard of the Killers before, so it was a good discovery I like 21st century rock bands that take up the codes of several genres, such as post-punk and new wave But I didn't like the pop side of the voice so much.
Not my kinda rock.
Was kinda meh about it. Mr brightside and somebody told me are bangers tho
Hat etwas Schlageriges?
I never understood the hype. Takes me back to uni days where you were likely to hear most of this album played at every single bar or club that you went to on a night out. It's not bad, I just didn't need to hear it multiple times a day, every day for a year. 1 star deducted for how sick I am of it, even after 19 years.
A couple of tracks that became hits through commercials, as was the norm for mid-00’s indie rock. But the songs never really appealed to me then, and I didn’t care for this album now. It’s completely alright music but nothing I want to revisit.
it medium. Mr Brightside is p okay. the rest is p medium.
I will never get the fuss over Mr Brightside - I can never remember how it actually goes.
This album soundtracked a large part of my college experience, you couldn’t go to a party in the late 00s without hearing Mr. Brightside, and All These Things That I’ve Done was the perennial late night closer with its chanty fade-out. Say what you will about the quality of those and the other two singles, this album basically cribs from a range of new wave, post-punk, and Britpop bands. You can hear Adam Ant, the Cure, the Smiths, Pulp, Blur, plastered all over this thing. Sometimes it works, but most times it’s a feeble tribute disguising a band trying to make some cheesy dance tunes. When you wear your influences so blatantly on your sleeves I wonder how many could wear you as an influence in turn.
Apart from the singles that the whole world knows, it's a pretty ho-hum album.
It was a 2 and then a 3 and then very much back to a 2 again
Hei täs on se biisi, somebody told me you had a boyfriend who looks like a girlfriend.
Nice to put an artist name to some singles I've heard many times but not a fan of the music.
There are a couple of hits on this album, but most of it is "meh".
Really amusing how i went from kinda liking this in my teens as a hipster girl to flat out not enjoying this at all.
meh. dated. lyrics are pretty whiny, but good production value and music. Change your mind is good.
SO - Smile Like You Mean It, Somebody Told Me
Pirma albumo dalis dar visai gerai klausosi, antra nu tikrai nemaža katorga buvo kad damušti. 2.5/5, jei balais vertinti. Gal net labiau 2/5, nes tiiikrai be keletos hitų tai n i e k o įdomaus.
wow,not goof
Meh
I enjoy the Killers. Mr. Brightside is one of my favorite songs, and Somebody Told me was core to my high school memories. I even discovered a new song I liked. I didn’t recognize most of the album though, and didn’t save many songs.
meh
Average
Listened to an uncompressed stream of this on $300 monitor headphones and it still sounds like it's coming out of $10 earbuds. Atrocious mix.
Mr. Brightside is my favorite part of this album, but after that none of the songs really clicked with me. 2/5
felt like one long song. surprisingly unmelodic and aimless. Mr Brightside lives on but at what cost.
Good start, 3rd song wasn't my type, then Somebody told me sounds great but the rest of the album wasn't great at all, On top maybe wasn't so bad... I don't want to listen this album anymore
Front heavy with hits. I find it all a bit meh and superficial. Maybe I've heard Mr Brightside too many times. I don't think it will go down in history as a classic.
Classic American rock music, which is another way of saying it's rather over the top, and probably in order to cover up for the abundant superficiality.
2/5. Although the first two songs are absolute bangers, it definitely falls way off after that. Somebody Told Me is also good but not amazing. If this was an EP, it would be awesome.
Too heavy and a bit much for me. It’s really how I imagine old rock from an early 2000 disneychanel movie. 2.0
Mwah
I hope you’re happy, you made me listen to “Mr. Brightside” all the way through. Because I’m not happy. D
-Never got into these guys back in the day, they weren't heavy enough for my tastes at the time. Track One ================================================ -Has a neat bassline, it's kinda catchy Track Two ================================================ -Always hated this song -wtf this song has 1.75 BILLION plays on spotify??? Track Three ================================================ -during verse, the guitar in the background sorta sounds Modest Mousey Track Four ================================================ -intro's actually kinda cool -chorus reminds me i never liked this song -grudgingly admit the verse isn't bad -really not into the chorus though Track Five ================================================ -i think i'm good on this album but i'll give this song a chance -this one's not bad, the timbre of the vocals isn't annoying like the two big hits i recognized (though i actually recognize this one too, i just didn't hate it when i was younger) -instrumentals are actually pretty chill -maybe i'll give the rest of the album a chance: good job Track 5, you saved the day Track Six ================================================ -i like the tone on the guitar during the intro/verse -i feel neutral/indifferent about the actual song Track Nine ================================================ -not crazy about this album Track Twelve ================================================ -okay, we made it. gonna go listen to lofi girl
Very, very close to a 3, then that last song hit. Wtf guys.
Mr. Brightside is great, the rest of the album is serviceable.
Trying hard to be cool is fine if you achieve it but this album misses. The production is great and the instrumental performances are good but everything else is mediocre or worse. The lyrics are bad and the vocal performance is Simon-LeBon-tweaked-to-sound-good-on-early-millennium-pop-radio. The corny moments happen too frequently to ignore. Any band committing these sins can be absolved by creating terrific songs but they just aren't here.
Ok album, but hits destroyed by overexposure. Cannot listen to Mr Brightside without hearing it in my head screeched out at a karaoke machine by a hen night.
Meh, I found this album to be rather bland.
Hot Fuss? More like Cold Complacency. I can't give Mr. Brightside anything over a 2, it'd be a slap in the face to music everywhere. I will say though, it was pretty good.
I was genuinely excited for this album because it has some bangers, but I found myself disappointed with the full album as the remaining tracks seemed mediocre to me.
In all truth, this is a quite strong album, it has some great tunes, good attitude, and it was quite trascendental. A couple of songs are tunes for the ages, with that everything will be alright song being quite outstanding. This should be a 4 stars album but I will never forget the band for riding this one to exhaustion, publishing their worst work to date again and again across the last 2 decades, I hate the fact that this has become the band for people who truly don’t like music, god I hate them sho much. My god I hate their presence in pop culture god I hate that flowers dude
I kind of liked one song, and thought there was some interesting basslines here and there, but otherwise found the album rather intolerable
2.5
Just insolent noise.
Too rowdy for me.
There are a couple of hits I recognize but I can’t get really get into this one.
Unappealing Indie Stadium Rock.
Not as good as I remember, even with nostalgia glasses
Its got a few tunes on it. But its oddly bady produced and a bit of a dirge to my ears
Not that bad, but very average. White Lies are much better at the same thing imho
Never really got into The Killers and a close listen hasn't changed this
Yawn, these songs do me nut.
Disappointingly dull
Eh, it's The Killers. I feel like this rock for trashy people. It's from this era of bad music, and it really does not age well. While the songs on this are not terrible, I don't think they're good. Even "Mr. Brightside" with over 1 billion streams on Spotify is not good.
First half. Bangers. Second half. Not so good.
The Killers is another band I was intimidated by because I thought I should know them. There are a slurry of bands that came out in the early to mid 2000s that leave me feeling this way: The Killers, Vampire Weekend, The Strokes, et al. Thinking about this now I recognize it's because I had my first child during these years and new bands were not a top priority. While this album was just fine, I can't say it's something I'll reach for again. And I'm glad I focussed on my baby who was 1 week old when this album debuted.
Started this album with a complete open mind, I only really know a few of the singles. The first notes of Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine really surprised me. A great 80's baseline that could have come straight from bands like Duran Duran or Japan. Unfortunately these upbeat danceable tunes are hard to be found in the rest of the album. With the exception of the two major hits, which have justifiably become classics, most songs are songs by a mediocre uni-band. As someone on this site already proclaimed: "A few Killer, but mostly filler"
Prefs: Mr. Brightside, Somebody Told Me, Believe Me Natalie, Midnight Show, Everything Will Be Alright Moins pref: Change Your Mind
Never really enjoyed the killers, Mr. Brightside is their commercial succes and it feels like they never really changed the formula throughout the whole album. songs blended in together. def a 2/5
Been familiar with them for ages, but never really much of a fan. Recognized several of the songs but never really paid attention to who was playing them. Definitely not what I'd purposefully select to listen to ever, but I didn't hate it.
A bit like chugging a large Pepsi. Many people are partial to the taste I suppose, but to me it's a bit too syrupy, and leaves me with a stomach ache.
Thought I was listening to Franz Ferdinand for a bit there.
Alternative rock, dance-punk revival, new wave, art rock, synth-pop, dance-rock. The genre labels for The Killers’ debut album "Hot Fuss" explain my problem with the band’s sound and my lack of interest. Because, honestly, I don’t hear any new wave here (how could I? It’s a genre label from the eighties), above all, I certainly don’t hear any art rock, and terms (and concepts) like dance-rock (sic!) and dance-punk (SIC!!) are enough to put me off for good. What I hear is that typical highly agitated vocals that eventually became established in alternative rock, along with a wall of sound made up of guitars and a few keyboard sounds that clash with the singer’s bleating. Of course, Brendan Flowers can sing well, but I wish he wouldn’t yell every note at full throttle. This music lacks variety and dynamic changes; almost everything seems to be cranked up to the max. I’ve heard worse, but “Glamorous Indie Rock’n’Roll” (that’s a track on the album) is absolutely not my cup of tea.
can't put a finger on why i don't like this, its sonically OK, i like the harmonizing parts and guitar sound. i missed this when i was a teen because it was lame radio rock and i hated all that new york/london stuff, i was obsessed with joy division and all the post punk revival stuff felt soulless and gross, a weird imitation of something lost. it was a bleak time culturally if anyone can't remember it was the bush era, not the y2k, reality tv was happening etc... a real era for slop and this takes me back (deragatory). sometimes the songs sound like theyre building to something good and then go to a crescendo thats just unsatisfying. like k liked the intro on the first track andy youre a star until the chorus, but didnt really like any song all the way thru ans skipped a few tracks, especially when they kept trying to move into a grand sound halfway thru. also the cover art feels sinophobic idk
Playlist pick : Mr. Brightside
So bland. There's absolutely nothing interesting about any of the songs. Ooo they have a synthesizer, I hated every synth sound chosen. Watered down "indie" rock for frat boys. Completely devoid of personality. Made me want to slap a "I rather be listening to Hot Hot Heat" sticker on my ass. Hope I never have to hear it again.
Whatever they call indie rock n roll is something I don't really like
Not for me
Aged like milk
It was downhill after the I’ve got soul but I’m not a soldier exercise
I dont know what it is, but I just cant get excited about the Killers It sounds fine, but it washes over me and is forgotten moments later I might be the half-shouted vocal delivery that makes me want it to be over, or the sameiness of the guitar sounds Wherever, its very one-dimensional, that turns into a difficult listen for 50 straight minutes
All shit (except the bangers)
Malo.
Teenager hipster shit. Unbearable.

Ryan hates the Killers
Overplayed, overhyped, over it! Couldn't wait for this to end, every track felt more torturous than the last
yicky
I am partially familiar with The Killers due to Mr. BrightSide, but rock and punk music just isn’t my thing.
Not a fan of the killers. So didn't listen to this album
Eh. Just don't get the fuss over this album/band/genre.
Didn’t like at all
Boring
Not my tempo. Too sappy and melodramatic.
Nope. Maybe it's because I hear Mr Brightside at the end of a Wedding night when everyone dancing to it is drunk and singing along to it, or maybe it has to be one of the most chosen Karaoke songs, or maybe it just annoys me full stop. Maybe because of Mr Brightside I just don't like the Killers or MAYBE I just don't like The Killers.
The sound of that protentious douchbag in your school walking down the hallway with a gargantuan ego thinking he is the coolest one when in fact his life is peaking and college won't be good for him and he will end up as a salesman or a construction worker listening to Mr. Brightside on the weekends wishing he did his life differently
More like The Fillers, fordi 99% av låtene deres er forglemmelig skvip. Like You Mean It, synthen i Somebody Told Me). Change my mind.
eh dio can no i killers non li riesco ad ascoltare, un ascolto del disco mi basta per esser certa della mia oramai decennale certezza: non li sopporto.
Debole e prevedibile
I don’t get the appeal of this at all. I’ve never understood why Mr. Brightside is so widely loved. Before this project, I would’ve said I didn’t have any strong feelings about the Killers, but after having to listen to an entire album I just really dislike them. It sounds like bland corporate rock. Knowing they’re both from Las Vegas really cements that these guys are the precursor to Imagine Dragons
Ok alternative band, leans towards the hard rock side of music.
The existence of Mr Brightside on this album meant it was unlikely to get more than one star from me. Objectively it's probably two stars, but this album and this band represent the absolute fucking cultural nadir of the Millennial generation and if I never have to hear a drunken crowd tunelessly shouting along to these songs again it will be too soon. With some exceptions, this is "music" for people who don't like music.
Rock adolescente genérico The strokes só que ruim
We have so many examples of people who have become financially very successful even in the face of their woo woo beliefs-- and who then used that commercial success to springboard into highly influential and insane public policy making positions that f**k America. So I can't knowingly support a person or a band with the potential to morph into some bullshit like that. So yeah, because of their stupid woo woo beliefs and religion, I'm a hard no on the technically excellent band, The Killers. Come correct or kick rocks.
One generation past punk, these guys had lots of great songs and groups to listen to and draw from. Too bad they listened to crap and ended up being scavengers feeding on the scraps of a rotting thirty year old corpse.
I've hated The Killers since I first heard them. Vapid.
Ugh... At first I just found this to be pretty forgettable pop-rock. Not truly offensive, but very by-the-numbers and safe. Got to about the third track before I started to find it super irritating. A barrage of stolen pop-hooks with no substance. Completely insipid. This sucks.
Boring
Before this, I thought I didn’t like Mr. Brightside. Turns out I don’t like The Killers.
Shit
This was an interesting album for me. It gave me
Steaming shit
Terrible album. Songs sound the same. No originality.
I GOT HAM BUT I'M NOT A HAMSTER!!!
Abrasive, repetitive, grating, monotonous singing followed by shouting. Make it go away.

Embarassing.
This is so bad. I had never listened to this band and didn't know anything about them, but obviously have been aware of a band called The Killers for a long time. I have heard one of the songs on this album before, it feels like it's probably just ubiquitous in culture at this point. But man this band sucks--it sounds like they just took some elements of The Strokes that were undeniably popular at the time and applied it to super shitty packaged for consumerism pop music. Get this off this list.
This is the 62nd album I’m rating. I’ve only listened to Mr. Brightside and I kinda hated it. Adding to my Playlist - All These Things That I’ve Done and Everything Will Be Alright. Not Adding to my Playlist - Jenny Was a Friend of Mine, Mr. Brightside, Smile Like You Mean It, Somebody Told Me, Andy, You’re a Star, On Top, Change Your Mind, Believe Me Natalie, and Midnight Show. All in all I liked 2/11 songs. This wasn’t that good and it was too basic. If you like it I wouldn’t judge for it though you because I like The Last Shadow Puppets who are arguably more basic.
Sounds like over produced radio friendly frat boy rock. It belongs to the parts of culture I despise the most, and that’s all I can hear in it. I do like their one song “Don’t Shoot Me Santa Claus” as a guilty pleasure, but that track isn’t here.
I thought maybe a relisten would “change [my] mind,” but “believe me Natalie,” it did not. I always hated the hits off this album and continue to find this a boring, trite product of its time. I couldn’t make it through. It’s marginally better than the other one-star albums I listened to (side eye to you, Kid Rock), but based on the “I can’t even listen to this whole thing,” it gets a 1.
it was... what it was. The production mainly, was often a weird mix of seemingly random effects(On Top, Killers have to be reminded this isn't the crazy frog album), that took away most of the flow out of the songs, like use of the vocoder at the most random instances. The record also seems very focussed around Mr Brightside, of which I don't understand the appeal at all, the lyrics are pretty goofy and the song isn't anything unique. To reiterate, I wasn't impressed at all, the songs were listenable but some choices were just laughably bad. Favorite track: Change your Mind(because I have to pick). Overall Score: 1.2/10
You gotta be fucking kidding me....this is my first one? Mr.Brightside? i cannot escape this goddamned song. This seems like an elaborate troll job....
Neutered rehash of new wave. Again I choose die.
I knew going in that I completely hate Mr. Brightside and Somebody Told Me. I can't believe you still hear Mr. Brightside out in public in 2025. This coming up on the list has reminded me that I also completely hate All These Things That I've Done. Three of my most hated radio singles is impressive in a first album. Britpop goes to Vegas to get glitzed up. A nightmare. music: hated. (⌐■_■)
Boring
Boring and monochromatic.
Not my cup of tea
This band is extremely overrated.
