Reviews (page 11 of 15)

Haven't listened to this since the 90s. Why start now?

Great run from longview to when i come around. Couple of skips for me outside of that

Not really my thing but not too bad

ascoltato distrattamente però ci sono grandi pezzi

Great Album! Loved it all, would put it at 4 but more on 3x

Consistent but unremarkable except for some key tracks. Basket Case slaps though 2.5/5

Very good stoned rock album 3/5- GEMV (17.03.2026)

Pretty cool, most of the songs honestly sound pretty similar but they've all got their charm. Best songs are "welcome to paradise" and "she" in my opinion

OK Dookie.

Relatively lightweight but enjoyable. Green Day inhabit a very particular space where it’s taking parts of mainstream rock, punk and pop and this album tends towards the lighter side. Decent enough music to listen to and it’s got some snappiness to it, helped by the track and album lengths. Not a favourite but decent.

HEAR ME OUT, guys, besides basket case and When I come Around, this album is fairly unmemorable...

I don't like Green Day at all, so I was surprised when I realized that I was enjoying the album, still not a fan tho

I still like “When I Come Around.” Otherwise, not really my thing but catchy enough in spots.

Not yet the best record of the band (that will forever be American Idiot for me, but mostly because it got released in a very formative time for me), but the one that firmly put their name on the charts. Still not lyrically at their best here, the songs mostly blend into one long wall of sound. But it's enjoyable and undeniably Green Day-ish. "Basket case" the most recognisable and beloved tune.

when i come around ... i might want to hear it again. but not in the next years.

A welcome resurgence of punk in the grundge era. 't was good to listen with a video game.

This is basically punk turned into a pop product, the first one of an era of shit punk revival. The clean production and catchy melodies are not really the kind of punk I grew up loving. Still, hooks are everywhere, the energy is there, and the album flies by. Simple, efficient.

Oh wow - going back to 1994 for this - I had forgotten how long they have been around! Basket is the highlight, but a few other tracks stand out, such as Paradise and When I Come Around I find Green Day can get a bit samey, so its 3/5 for me

Really good! Better than you'd think -

Longview: bass + drums are great; welcome to paradise: great guitar riffs and some harmonies; basket case: classic!

A classic from my childhood. I’ve never been a huge fan of Greenday, but if I was to have a favorite record of theirs it would be Dookie for sure.

7/10 - not as good as American Idiot but still worth a listen

Hey look it's pop-punk! American Idiot made a big impact on my high school life, but never actually listened to this album before. Good album and really resonates with those angsty/melancholic feelings without getting bogged down into depression. Not necessarily my style but a good listen nonetheless!

One of those albums that was just a product of its time. Probably great in the 90s, but listening to this album today was not a great experience. The album has a couple of all time bangers

This is actually not to bad, probably the best of Green Day.

Not bad, pretty lively and not too long. Bit same in places but some good songs!

upbeat nice drums punk kinda repetitive rythym

Critically I think it’s pretty vanilla but it’s got a decent BPR for a debut album. Anecdotally I can trace my taste in music to this exact record. I have childhood memories tied to this album. Like, finding out that my Dad owned this on CD as a child and how my older brother’s friends thought that was so cool. I have scanned this album art for hours. Good memories

Basket case absolute banger tracks. 3 dunkies for for dookie by the dukes

A little heavy on the electric guitar at times but not all together unpleasant. Catchy lyrics and vocals. 3.5 on the Richter scale.

Some all time classics on this album Nice punk album but lots of filler songs

Classic Green Day.

Hadn't heard this in years and still has some great stuff on there. Not going to be on repeat but did not mind hearing this again. Some great singles.

Not my favorite Green Day album, but when this was released, boy were they considered a sell-out for getting a record deal. I left music, went to college and had a career hawking health insurance. These guys are still going 35+ years later playing music. Gotta hand it to them for that, so my whole entire attitude of being a "sellout" has changed since then.

This is a decent album, that shows a band now able to construct some catchy songs while maintaining a punk-influenced sounds. Ultimately though I think it does suffer from some of the common pitfalls of pop-punk: the sound becoming quite repetitive, the vocals having an annoying style (though less true for Armstrong than others in the genre), and themes that come across as a bit whiny, at least for me. Probably best enjoyed at about age 17!

Enjoyed the thrashing around

I like Green Day a lot and American Idiot would make my 1001 always. This is very much in style, but maybe just a tad samey?

Classic poppunk album

Not their best work. I prefer the version of Green Day that moves away from the punk elements and slows down their songs, like Boulevard Of Broken Dreams, or Longview. Still though, it's Green Day, and Green Day are pretty good. High 3.

I didn't realize that Green Day was making music in the 90s!

This was pretty good. The hits from this album are classic.

classy. 3.4

Removing the nostalgia from the equation, it's average.

Eh im boy fussed a lot sound the same

Fine album, it is very popular for a reason. It is a very American album and gives me capitalist punk vibes. I get the hype, but not an amazing album in my opinion.

A great example of contemporary rock music. No silly sound effects. No skits to talk through. Just a a few guys jamming on their instruments with lyrics people can understand and follow. A good listen all around.

🎵oh these songs all sound the same🎵 🎵woah these songs all sound the same 🎵yeah these songs still sound the same 🎵’cuz these songs are all the same 🎵how did they get such critical acclaim 🎵when these songs all sound the same🎵 🎵even the hits start to sound lame🎵 🎵how come these songs all sound the same🎵 https://www.mureka.ai/song-detail/WN2cHwRf8UUBAa1mhocG5p?is_from_share=1

Hasn't aged well. 3 stars for the two great pop tunes. Haven't listened to it for awhile, surprised how dull it is.

Hard to believe this album is over 30 years old.

Way better than American Idiot, that’s for sure. But it’s only getting a rating this good because of nostalgia. That ain’t saying much.

I certainly enjoyed it more than I expected - not sure ai get the hype though

Fun in the moment, didn't truly resonate

Some great songs on here but other than the songs you definitely know, it doesn't feel anything exceptional

Ordinarily I'd say that if an album has at least a few bangers that are worth replaying (which this one does) then it can't possibly be anything less than good, but unfortunately the vocals/lyrics on some songs, especially on the last track are bad enough to drop this whole album into mid territory for me. I can appreciate the cultural impact this album had while also saying that I'm not a huge fan of it overall.

Even as someone who likes angsty music, this isn’t really my jam. I felt like none of the songs stood out. That being said, there are a couple quintessential Green Day songs on here that I can always appreciate, and it’s not a bad record. It’s just mid. Favorite song: Basket Case Least favorite song: All By Myself (the drummer should never be allowed to sing again bc wtf)

Overhyped in my opinion. But got some good Songs

Quality. Not my thing, but it’s good and worth the listen.

Other than the hits on the radio, I have never listened to this album. Pretty silly, but then again we were all in our 20s when this came out.

I don't care about Green Day. But this has brought me back to when I was 18 and this album had just come out. It was quite a jump from their Lookout Records stuff that I was used to. This album represents when teenage angst went mainstream. But I can't deny the songs are catchy, poppy and the lyrics funny, even though you have to be of a certain age for them to be relatable. It was nice to revisit this as a nostalgic piece, especially in my near middle age. I'm ok to forget it for a long time now. I'll enjoy going back to this when I'm 60.

I was quite excited to see this one pop up as today's assignment, seeing as the only Green Day album I've ever actually listened to (American Idiot) is one I enjoy a fair bit and a lot of folks seem to talk up Dookie as the band's best work. My thoughts about this album are somewhat similar to Never Mind the Bollocks – I appreciate what it did for punk as a whole, but the songs are pretty much all interchangeable to me and I don't have particularly strong feelings about any of them. I would probably prefer listening to Dookie over the Sex Pistols album (pop punk is more my speed than unadulterated punk rock), but only marginally. Oh, fun fact: I'm related to Chris Freeman, whose band Pansy Division was on the Dookie Tour in 1994. That happened three years before I was born, so I never got to meet the band or anything like that – however, I did get some clout in middle school by telling other kids that my mom's uncle was in a queercore band that opened for Green Day! Good times... Highlights: Chump, Welcome to Paradise, Basket Case, When I Come Around, F.O.D.

consistent, but not to thrilling

so mid

Not bad, but not brilliant either. Slides off the brain like rain on a sunny day. It's fine. Cute, even.

I was never tempted to listen to Green Day even as a teenager. If American "punk" rock didn't do it for me then, it was unlikely to now. Still, Basket Case is a classic and I have to give this album credit for doing what it does well, even if what it does is fairly uninteresting.

Samey but tight.

Basket Case is top tier

Fan of American Idiot but this is not as good. A few decent tracks.

I've only listened to Green Day from this album and its kind of what I expected. Pretty solid. 6.5/10

A ver, creo que no soy chica Green Day.

When Green Day exploded with this album, I wasn’t particularly interested and harbored some snobbery. How the fuck you call yourself punk when you’re getting played all over the radio, and whatnot. Time — and the fact that their hits are no longer ubiquitous — has given me some new perspective. The band is tight and good with vocal harmonies and power chords, and their songs have a sneering, poppy likability, colored with a generous helping of disaffected slacker culture. But I like the gravitas of American Idiot better, and if I’m in the mood for punk with melody I’m still reaching for Buzzcocks, Dag Nasty or the Huskers before this.

I dont love punk pop but this album does it so well.

Do you have the time to listen to be whine about nothing and everything all at once? That line is likely stuck in most people's brain like a piece of shrapnel from the war. I don't really know how to judge this album. It was inescapable for a period of time to the point where it's hard to tell if I ever actually liked the music or if it just became a part of the background of it all.

look, i love Billie Joe Armstrong okay my bi icon Album cover is cute i like it yea okay this is emo lmao love that for them. Maybe its the recordings, but I can't really hear my guy singing. Anyway, its a lot of whining haha, so I am not missing out on a lot. Also no offence, but all the songs sound the same... Guitar's great tho

Before: In case you don't read anything else I wrote here, I just want to say right off the bat there is NOTHING PUNK about this album. If this is punk then the word is meaningless. Still, I think a liked Green Day's music a tiny bit but not much back then as they don't have any tracks on my favorites by years list for 1994, or any other year for that matter. They're way too main stream for my tastes. For reference here are my top albums from 1994. I might be able to squeeze Dookie in some where between 15 - 20. Rank Artist Name Album Name ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 Portishead Dummy 2 Beastie Boys Ill Communication 3 Stereolab Mars Audiac Quintet 4 Soul Coughing Ruby Vroom 5 Korn Korn 6 Frank Black Teenager of the Year 7 G. Love & Special Sauce G. Love And Special Sauce 8 Jawbox For Your Own Special Sweetheart 9 The Prodigy Music for the Jilted Generation 10 The Magnetic Fields Holiday 11 Ween Chocolate and Cheese 12 Radiohead The Bends 13 The Proclaimers Hit the Highway 14 Low I Could Live In Hope During: Two songs in, yep I remember this sound from the 90's. I'm sure they are very good but as I said, too main stream for my taste. I'll probably give it a 3. Definately would not be in my 1001 essential albums list. Time to turn down the volume and work on other tasks. Then "Longview" comes on. Not too bad, fun even. Maybe I'll add that to my 1994 list, just because. After: I have to give it a three. Maybe it deserves a higher rating but I would never play this album of my own volition. There are so many better choices out there. For that reason the highest rating I can give it is a 3. Looking at the Wikipedia article I come across this confusing line, "Regarding its legacy, Dookie has been labeled by critics as one of the greatest punk rock albums of all time." In what way is this punk? It's totally mainstream power-pop-rock. I know that's not a recognized genre but that's what it is imo.

Calpyurnia vibes

Amazing 🤩! Green day is one of the bands I've been wanting to get into and having it recommended to me was the perfect time to listen 👂.

i liked the production and instruments, it felt a little bit monotonous for sure but overall i enjoyed it. „basket case” remains one of my favourite tracks of all time

Not a big fan

It’s a good not a banger

Favorite song from this album: She As a big punk rock listener, I enjoyed this album quite a while ago. Energetic, fast, and nostalgic.

nostalgic

The most interesting thing about going back to this one is the sense that in the end, this crud was a lot better than the later crud (broadly, Indie Rock) that came out in the later formative years of my youth. I don’t connect with it like I did when I was 12 or whatever, but it at least feel like an earnest attempt to express SOMETHING. Later Green Day can kick rocks, it was a mistake to try to be Serious in any way, but this is a high praise 3.

Great generation album

It's a Green Day album, Basket Case being the best song on the whole thing. I really enjoy Green Day's later albums but in a pinch this will do.

It's decent and theres a couple of good tracks but its not as packed as American Idiot. Also the title just makes me roll my eyes.

Classic punk rock songs on here but the style gets a bit old

Cool white 2000s garage music.

It's got some classics but the songs in between those don't really capture the interest. It's pop-y and fun and makes you feel punk without needing to commit to being punk. Not quite pop punk but not quite not pop punk

Ahh yes, one of the most highly overrated bands in existence. This is a lazy man’s punk with sell out capabilities that don’t necessarily work. It’s no secret that Billie Joe was a more tolerable person when he was addicted to whatever it was he was addicted to. Like most artists, the music suffers when their creativity is blocked by being sober. The addiction hadn’t taken them over during the time of this album so you see its weakness compared to their more radio friendly albums that came out later in the 2000’s. I’ve tried to listen to this album numerous times over the years and I can never find it anything more than middle of the road trash that you choose to run over rather than drive close to it so it blows off the road .

pre 9/11 green day cant beat post 9/11 green day top track: she

I hate to be the cliche punk who’s all like “Green Day was at their best before they sold out when they were most easily comparable to Buzzcocks and Hüsker Dü” but I’m sorry I gotta be. This is a good album, let’s be clear, but it has nothing on 39/Smooth or even Kerplunk! And those are two albums I only listened to in the past week as opposed to this one which I’ve been listening to since I first got into punk music. Actually I think that’s why this worked less for me this go around, I can really see how this is a much less cohesive album compared to the previous two. Obviously being a pop-punk band it’s expected that this is based largely around the singles, which are still great! Well, mostly great, Longview doesn’t really do it for me anymore, and I think the Kerplunk! version of Welcome to Paradise slightly edges out the Dookie one, but Basket Case and When I Come Around(best track) are classic for a reason. I’ll also still champion Burnout and Having a Blast as on par with the singles. F.O.D was for a brief moment my favorite song here but I think it needed an extension on the heavy distorted second half, it’s a little too even. Here’s the thing though, the rest of the album just meshes together, they feel rushed out. Those last two records all had a pretty consistent level of quality throughout, but here it feels like we got a strong opening, strong singles, and then just some mindless jamming on a few chords inbetween. I know there’s definitely people who have some strong connection to She or Sassafras Roots but I couldn’t pick them out in a lineup. This album just feels like the simplified version of the band, they saw their shot at glory and took it with both hands. But in that case you would think every song would have multiple killer hooks in it but nope, I guess they just poured everything into those singles, the most pop move they could have done. Compare this with Smash from the same year and it’s night and day, that album also has huge pop choruses and cleaner mixing than what came before, but The Offspring still kept their edge and deployed those singles as a deceptive lure into an album that largely still stayed true to their skate punk and melodic hardcore roots. You can go pop without dumbing down. Anyways I wouldn’t be surprised if I become one of those people who likes Insomniac more.

No such thing as a bad Green Day album, but I like other releases from them better.

1/13/26. They got a couple good hits out of this one, bit tiring listening to the whole thing though. 5/10

I like the energy of this album. I always like Billy Joe Armstrong's voice.

A little out of my comfort zone, but I liked it

Besser als Durchschnitts-Rock.

well done polished album that right away goes off the core themes and vibe of being bored stuck in a loop in the suburbs in the 90s. Enjoyed the sardonic voice to it classic from pop punk. I can also understand why a lot of fans felt they sold out with this album and join a record label. Great album, will revisit for sure.

I wonder if there was a sound like this before them. Now their style has been a major influence in the genre of pop punk. I think that sense comes from the general Californianess in the music. Bright is the best word for it. The general punk sounds from the UK blended with the carefree of Cali. The ending of Chump shows some interesting artistry that hints at why they lasted, it shows there is more talent than just some kids making noise. Longview, that's almost a signature bassline and the sound most people kind of when they think of GreenDay.

1 song i like in particular. Ok listening

This album is very bland. It feels like listening to the same song over and over. I guess Green Day are that way, their music isn't much interesting. But at least other of their albums aren't that repetitive. Of course, they are not my cup of tea. It's not that I consider this album to be a bad one but surely it isn't either a good one.

Very loud and powerful. Definitely a groundbreaking listen. 8/10 [KEEP]

It's okey. I added a few songs to my playlist, but overall, it's just not my genre.

The quintessential trademark Greenday album What can you say some absolute classics on this a punk smasher ! Not just a great punk album but a good pop album too some well crafted Melodys hooky power chord riffage Probably tre cool’s best drumming on this and his introduction to the group Standout tracks for me of course basket case Chump Welcome to paradise and she , overall a banger !

Chump has a hypnotic bass line really got me in a trance really showcases mike dirnts underrated bassplaying The transition into long view into the tom section is awesome then kicks you in the face Production overall super in your face compressed, the whole album in one sitting really fatigues the ears, but does the job. Listened on good headphones CD quality but i bet on a good HiFi blasting it'd kick your ass Welcome to paradise really has all band members playing to their full ability, the part where it drops out into the middle section with toms panned right then kicks into the full tom groove in stereo makes it sound huge, pretty underwhelming going into the track pulling teeth after such a banger. Nothing to say about basket case that hasn't been said before, absolute classic everyone has learnt on the guitar at least once, and really creative drumming from tre, never gets old. F.o.d the acoustic guitar is just recorded badly and it sounds great when the band kicks in but just too weak on the acoustic intro, I lost interest in this song All by myself is a funny humorous classic but by this point im pretty tired with fatigued ears from the compression on this album , good in small doses . 3/5 as a whole

Some absolute all time alt punk bangers on here, but there are too many immediately forgettable tracks for me to consider it anything more than a good solid effort. Favorite track: Longview

good but the melodies in every song are so similar

Doesn't quite pick up until Longview and I think I in general prefer to listen to these songs as they might appear on the radio or a playlist, not so much in an album

longview buenísima

Not sure im the biggest fan of green day music... Track 1: nah 2: sounds familiar, better 3: these all sound the same... 4: okay some new sounds..., boring tho 5: same same, liking the chorus. I rate it 6: wtv 7: hmm same teen thing.. I gave up they all sound the same to me.

I loved the vibes, it took me back to 90s. Except of that i feel like most of the songs sounded really similiar, i was expecting something with different beat or anything, sometimes its good, sometimes its not.

This is the first time I’ve gotten an album I’ve fully enjoyed. Until “All by myself”. I’m only on album 6/1001 and I was digging this one, even though this is definitely not a genre I typically venture into. That last song kinda messed up the vibe.

Ok - inoffensive middle of the road pop/rock - nothing special in my mind

Turns out I like Green Day. Missed them at the time, but catching up now and liking it!

Poppy easy listen cool fade between chump and next track. Good feeling for melody, good vocals sounding annoyed and entitled Generally cool guitar tone and reasonable production Pulling teath is a dud but followed by basket case as teenage angst anthem Its only 38 min but im bored before halftime Very repetitive, it seems musically very one dimensional. Can not connect emotionally Stopped after when I come around

It's rock and roll. It's pretty good. Some of the songs are catchy. Some are kind of funny. When "Basket Case" comes on the radio, I'll turn it up. But is it one of the 1001 essential albums? Only as a representation of a certain era (I think).

The instrumentals in each song were great, and a few of the song's lyrics were relatable. Most of the songs were repetitive, and I may need to re-listen.

This is punk right? This album hits the format probably, the songs are short, repetitive mostly, but that's about it. Green Day deserves credit for making punk more palatable for wider consumption, but in true punk fashion there is no way this review ends with this album being called punk in the traditional sense. Dookie is pop-punk. Period. While that categorization proved beneficial to Green Day’s commercial success, it comes at the cost of the abrasion and discomfort that punk is supposed to have. This controversy might be why this album should be heard prior to mortal event. Punk is meant to be a collective middle finger to blind conformity, but what remains here is something too efficient, too catchy, and too carefully engineered. Punk is inherently inaccessible to just anyone. That said, the societal impact of this album is to be respected in that sense. Still, where punk traditionally earns loyalty through rawness and uncompromising stance, regardless of agreement, this record thrives on accessibility. When an album built on punk aesthetics becomes skate rink background music for pop reasons, a negative bias in its evaluation is difficult to avoid.

Album 2 Top 3 favorites off the album: Pulling Teeth, Coming Clean, All By Myself Every so often, I listen to an album that makes me realize that maybe I'm not as far removed from my angsty teenage self as I think I am. Life runs in cycles, some ages feel closer to others, etc. etc., whatever you want to say about it. Not every song hits the same as when I first came across Green Day, but I was surprised by how many did still resonate in some capacity. Maybe your early 20s aren't so different from your early teens... Self-reflection aside, a few songs sound quite a lot like each other, not just in a signature band way. It's all Very Green Day, but some songs are Very Green Day in a way that's more similar than other Very Green Day songs. Not necessarily a bad thing; it just makes me go, "oh, this isn't the same song as a minute and a half ago!" I'll always love early Green Day for their energy, though, so none of that bothers me. Green Day was the first band I decided to like by myself. You know how you grow up listening to your parents' music, and you like some of it and don't like other parts as much, and one day you're digging through their CDs and records and you find a title or a band or some album art that piques your interest, and it's *your* discovery? That was Green Day for me. I was an angsty middle schooler, just about as un-punk as you can get, and I found a copy of American Idiot on the CD rack. I'm almost embarrassed to say that I haven't listened to this album before, so instead I'm just going to be honest: I'd never listened to this album before! It was exceptionally difficult to pick my top 3 favorites! This is an excellent album to drive to! Traffic had nothing on me!

1.Burnout=7/10 2.Having a blast=6/10 3.Chump=6/10 4.Longview=6/10 5.Welcome to paradise=7/10 6.Pulling teeth=8/10 7.Basket case=8/10 8.She=6/10 9.Sassafras roots=7/10 10.When I come around=7/10 11.Coming clean=8/10 12.Ememius sleepus=6/10 13.In the end=6/10 14.F.O.D=6/10 15.All by myself=5/10 Overall: 6/10

How I love drums, man.

With very little exception this album is basically the same song 15 times in a row. The hits, "Longview", "Basket Case", and "When I Come Around" are the only high points. Its clear they love them some Clash and thrash. Perhaps it was included in this list because it was the one of the first 1990s Pop Punk albums to reach the stratosphere, but personally, I would not have included it. 38 minutes of fairly monotonous power chords. I would have included The Offspring's SMASH instead. A tad more eclectic in their Pop Punk approach.

gotta come back

Really liked that album has mood of an annoying narcissistic teenager who at the same time feels to be very depressive. Not very my style but i think i like the vibes

Ok so here’s my hot take on this album, it’s ok. It has massive huge hit songs that made them a household name. But there was also a ton of songs that are just there and don’t add anything other than run time. In fact I think that’s the album’s biggest problem, is that it’s so homogenous that every song sounds similar to the last song (ESPECIALLY AFTER WHEN I COME AROUND). That being said it also has under appreciated classics like “burnout”. But sadly I think even on an album that’s only 38ish mins Billie Joe Armstrong’s voice is so grating, like a song here or there it doesn’t bother you, but after like 4 songs I just hate his stupid voice. Definitely an album I feel pretty mixed feelings about. But regardless of my personal tastes/feelings this definitely a classic popular punk rock album and I can’t take that away from it. And for what it’s worth this is personally my favorite Green Day album and genuinely the only one I’d own.

the album is fine, all by myself is funny. my favorite song is basket case.

#38 Thought I didn't know their songs but quite a few were familiar and still good, others were not as good

it's alright. Green day always sounds too generic to me

Amazing lyrics!

It’s fine. Green day is pretty average for me. Like don’t get me wrong they have some banging songs but they tend to sound the same. Still, some good songs on here. I liked burn out, when I come around, basket case, and having a blast. 3 stars Songs are very samey which brings it down but there are a few good ones in there. Could listen to it any time though, theres nothing in there that i dislike. Not a fan of the mixing, would like to head the vocals a bit more.

Through all the nostalgia it’s easy to forget that Green Day makes such garbage music until you have to listen to an entire album.

Reminiscent of what I used to listen in my teenage years but after a while the songs all began to sound the same. Burnout is far too relatable right now.

Not my cup of tea mas já conhecia algumas músicas que gosto

I think I gave American Idiot 2 stars and I liked this more.

i’ve listened to songs before and i like this album! it’s good not really my cup of tea when it comes to everyday listen but if it’s on then i like it stand outs : basket case, welcome to paradise, when i come around 7/10

Fav: Basket Case Least Fav: All By Myself I think this is the most I can bring myself to like this style of pop punk. Basket case is great tho

a few songs did stand out to me like chump and welcome to paradise but I don’t see them being songs that I’d just listen to regularly. Deffo a good album though just not completely my taste

will happily listen to this :3! i love green day but i don’t think i’ve ever listened to this album fully. i have it on cd though. i remember covering longview in college having to sing about masturbating for three minutes brev. ok finished solid album didn’t change my life but that’s ok

2-3 classics but repetitive.

No me impresionó demasiado

I've never been a big Green Day fan. Listening to this you can draw a straight line to all the influences the pop-punk bands I hated in high school tried to copy/paste. This is clearly better, but I don't think it's for me. I'm not sure if this is derivative of Stiff Little Fingers, or an evolution. Either way, I don't hate it, but I don't ever foresee myself uttering the phrase "hey, put on some Green Day". That said, "Basket Case" is a nostalgic classic. If I was 13 in 1994, this album would have been my prized possession. Listening this made me dive into their other stuff. They have a lot of hits you forget about. I actually really liked their first record (1,039 / Smoothed out Slappy Hours) because its much less polished.

The classic popular songs are still great. The other songs are just..... Other songs. Filler. Skippable

Not bad. A lot of the tracks too similar to each other, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Favourite Track(s): Basket Case, Welcome to Paradise Least Favourite Track(s): All by Myself, Chump

Twas grand

Pretty much exactly what I thought a Green Day album would sound like, knew a few more songs than I thought

if i could give it 3.5 i would. not a bad album at all just not very enticing either. none of the songs make me think omg i have to listen to that over and over again. good guitar.

Listenable.

Meh. Not sure what the fuss is about. Fine but nothing special.

Blah blah blah, then it comes into focus on Longview

I have never actively listened to Green Day. Of course they are very famous, especially when I was growing up, so I've heard them a lot on radio and such. I honestly got nothing bad to say about them. It's very "safe" music to me. A bit nostalgic and reminds me of good times. As this is the first album I listened to from start to finish I would probably classify it as good background music. Probably would be really good driving music. But maybe if I listend to it more I will appreciate it more. I added "Welcome to Paradise" to my playlist. 3/5.

An okay album

It was good but didn't stand out to me

Derivative and annoying

Disappointed to report that those other kids were right and that green day are better than red hot chilli peppers. Still not going to listen to this again though.

c.2002 I listened to a pirate copy of International Superhits on my CD Walkman so much that it must have put a dent in the world’s supply of AA batteries. 2years later American Idiot was out. All the boys in school wore eyeliner and gelled their hair in spikes. I steered clear of Green Day ever since. Expected to hate revisiting this. But I didn’t. Not groundbreaking but fun pop music deserving of its place on this list.

Fine enough punk music. I enjoy it, but it isn't anything crazy or something I'm gonna put on again anytime soon. The popular tracks (Basket Case, Welcome to Paradise, Longview, When I Come Around) are really the only ones that one needs to know. I'm also not a big punk guy, so while I understand this is a seminal pop-punk record, it isn't for me.

Some fun stuff

Never my favorite 90s record, but the singles were fire.

I get why it was big at the time, but it is not for me

An alright rock album. I have definitely listened to worse.

I had heard Basket Case and When I Come Around before this listen through. I found it really hard to enjoy the first 3 songs on the album. Green Day has their sound and those three tracks sit in the same place for me. When we got to Longview I appreciated the difference in vibe at the very least in the beginning of the song. From then on the album begins to shine a bit brighter, though there are some forgettable tracks that come up after. I had to go relisten to Sassafras Roots because I had forgotten if I had listened to it. I had come to Green Day during American Idiot and though they were never a mainstay in my musical tastes they were always on the periphery. This album in my mind exemplifies why. They are clearly competent in their music but they are some songs that are just kinda in here to be in here. The songs that feel like they are just here to be here are well produced noise. Even if it’s well produced noise I enjoy, its hard for this album to be a full 5/5 based on the fact that for me this album is destined to be dissected for a playlist, taking the bangers and leaving the mash. After the last few albums though I will say I really appreciate the brevity of these songs. They know what they are and they know when that magic wears off. They never overstay their welcome and I really appreciate that in a post Tommy listen through. Basket Case, Welcome to Paradise, and Longview are my top favorites while All By Myself makes it way to the very bottom.

I think it’s… good. It’s nowhere near as good as American idiot, though I may be biased considering that’s one of my favorite albums. But yeah perfectly fine, not a ton more than that. Favorites: Longview, Welcome to Paradise, When I Come Around

Hugely popular back in the day. Very catchy and clean punk pop. 3/5.

Fair album with some high spots. It's fun and where it lags it's merely because it is a fun punk album with literal slow spots. I don't want those when I have such fun driving highs.

Enjoyable but repetitive

Fun 3 chord bops, catchy hooks. A probable catalyst in getting punk into the mainstream. Although Green Day isn’t my favorite band ever, I recognize their influence on modern music and I would listen to this album again. This album doesn’t have enough dynamics I feel like, as a whole.

This was a part America’s Britpop (AKA, the soundtrack to the cultural milieu of GenX’s 1990s)

Pop punk never had it so good. Nothing profound here, just solid musicianship, good production, perfectly propulsively attuned to youthful sensibilities. Definitively catchy.

Some very fun, catchy tunes. All by myself reminded me of After Hours by the Velvet Underground- the same naive sweetness to end a raw album.

I like Longview but ultimately his voice bugs me before I get too far in any song.

Takes me back. Would be a solid 7 for nostalgia reasons. Getting 3/5. Losing a mark due to having a member with the stage name Tre Cool....his real name is Frank

Nice nostalgic punk pop

This one was fun, but a little superficial. Dolly put it really well and I think there was just something missing... music without a soul. I dunno, maybe I'm being unfair!

There are elements of this I like. It's fun in places, and teenagers need something to let it out with. But it just feels a bit empty to me, and did even when I was young, when it came out. I enjoyed the rhythm section this time. I didn't finish it but that's more to do with how impossibly busy I was yesterday. It's more of a 2.5.

Just a bunch of frustrated american schoolboys complaining about their mum.

Distinctly remember getting this one from a friend 10 CDs for a penny ad, haven’t listened to GD voluntarily in a long while. I liked how the bass and drums sounded together, particularly on Paradise.

Favorites: Burnout, Longview, Basket Case, Sassafras Roots. Makes me feel like I'm a silly teenager in 90s, who's going through it. Which was the goal, i think. The sound itches my brain and ears in a somewhat right way, but doesn't impress me that much! Lazy and kinda repetitive, honestly. Something to put in the background, just for it to drain all the other sounds around, but nothing more, you know?

The assembly hall at Ordsall secondary school was classic early 60s brutalist. Stage to the north of the room, tall enough to give the teacher leading the assembly an intimidating air; an access corridor leading to the changing rooms on the west side; the south a confused multifunctional area that hosted a row of vending machines and a foosball table; then the east facade all glass, two seven foot panels and a third of maybe four feet, stretching floor to ceiling. Entirely necessary since Retford, North Notts, exists in a sort of permanently crepuscular state. As much light as you can allow in, you must. I might have only been at the school for a couple of years before I moved to Australia and it was demolished, but that hall has an outsized kind of presence in my memory. I remember sitting there in mute horror while a teacher played back CCTV footage of an assault perpetrated by a classmate on the back seats of a local bus. I remember being entirely flummoxed by a visiting drama group who seemed to actually disband before our startled eyes, shouting at each other in a way that couldn’t have possibly been role play or simulation. I got my TB jab there. I sat a series of exams in there, ones that I’d never hear the results from since I was emigrating a week later (shame, there was a creative writing exercise based on a crime syndicate I’d have liked feedback on). I ate too many Refreshers too many times. I cemented friendships passing headphones back and forth. It was in that room that I had my first properly ecstatic experience with music, too. A battle of the bands where the sixth formers traded blows through the relatively gentle means of power chords and pitchy vocals. Up on that impressively tall stage, though, they were fucking mint. I crowd surfed to a cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit and felt so brilliantly energised that if I sit still and think about it I can still feel the spark. (A recording of the night that did the rounds very clearly showed the silhouette of my 12 year old body skimming across the crowd with an utterly possessed rhythm – joy.) It was that night that I first heard Green Day’s “Basket Case”, there ably performed by local heroes Latchkey. I just hadn’t until then come across much by Green Day; we didn’t have Sky and I didn’t have an older sibling. I could’ve sung you Hybrid Theory in reverse, but Green Day didn’t seem to be much but Blink-182 without the (sic – thought I certainly didn’t think so at the time) absolutely hysterical jokes. Dead wrong. It was, in that moment and in every listen since, a magical song. The sort of self-effacing that puts a smile on your face; the sort of punk that makes more the sense the louder it’s played; the sort of song you don’t get bored of hearing. I don’t like Green Day. I might even really quite dislike Green Day. But that song (along with a couple of others on this record: “When I Come Around”, “Longview”) are undeniably special. Genre defining, epoch shaping, pop punk monoliths. It’d be something, I guess, to be reading this as one of the kids who played that night at Ordsall Hall. I’m certain not a single person who stood there, staring down at their fretboards or floor toms, thought anything they were doing could possibly mean so much to anyone who’d been there. But that’s what happens when it all comes together. As a soundtrack to the thrill of being a teenager, it’s hard to top.

Better than I remember but still not my thing!

not as good as when i was 16. there are bangers here, yet little to no variation between songs. nevertheless, it’s nostalgic and heartwarming. 3.5/5

Y si os digo que nunca me gustó Green Day especialmente?

Great 90’s light punk

Recognized more songs than expected

I think this one is good. I really like some of the songs. I prefer early Green Day to the later stuff. 3 stars.

I never liked Green Day, even when it would have been cool for me to be in to them at about 13. Still not that keen, but I don't hate it. It's just been done a lot better by other artists. I think this does deserve to be on the list though.

Better than I expected

Couple of tracks I go back to every now & then.

I never had a personal connection to 𝘋𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘪𝘦 back in the 90s or 00s, but if I had stumbled on it then, I probably would have played it endlessly. Listening now, this kind of pop-punk just doesn’t grab me anymore. 𝘉𝘢𝘴𝘬𝘦𝘵 𝘊𝘢𝘴𝘦 is easily the standout track — and no surprise it became Green Day’s signature song until 𝘈𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘐𝘥𝘪𝘰𝘵 came along a decade later. An important album for the genre and for 90s alternative/indie history, sure, but one I can only appreciate from a distance.

Few bangers but overall fairly mindless - understanding this is their first album and not their greatest

Better than I remembered, pleasantly surprised. I didn’t think I like green day, but this is the peak of pop punk (it peaked very early)

Not a huge Green Day fan or pop punk for that matter but this album is full of hits and Green Day's drummer is named Tre Cool!

This is an interesting one for me because I have never listened to this album in full, yet I’ve 100% played out other Green Day albums. It’s pretty good for a debut album but outside of the obvious hits nothing really sparked me. Good groundwork laid though for future incredible releases.

3+ Stars (9/15)

fine album. Not as great as everyone else says. But for Pop Punk it is good with a few classics such as "Longview", "Welcome to Paradise", "Basket Case" and "When I Come Around" 3.5

Got some banger songs on it. All my fav pop-punk wouldn't exist without oldies like this. ;)

Asked Santa to get me this album a long time ago. He never did, so I have never forgiven them. I like the singles. 3 Heard before? Yes, the singles Owned: Yes. /91001, 9/38 (23%) Will I get?

I don't think I'm angsty enough these days for adolescent punk. Basket Case still holds up pretty well though.

I like the hit songs, the rest is a bit all the same. 3.5 stars rounded to 3

Volume @ max and scream out your problems! DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO DAD!! Loaded with bangers, these are the songs of my generation. Love those base lines 🫶 those drums don't stop holy moley Love Greenday too. They brought punk to the masses and stayed true to real defiance of the fascists that be ✊️

Adolescent, fun yet a bit repetitive

This is Green Day's second album for me in this project. Unfortunately, it didn't fulfill my perhaps too high expectations. I liked this kind of American punk better from other bands. Too bad. 3/5

Perfectly pleasant listening, but the album tracks are truly album tracks.

Fun pop punk record. Couple cracker tunes, then a couple dull songs. Middle of the road for me but one can't argue the influence it ended up having. Great production, very well executed but all a bit samey

Overall felt one-note to me. Feels like we needed more songs like "All by Myself" to break up the tone. The album name is hilarious. And I somehow didn't know they were recording starting all the way back in '91.

Ok - not my fave

they should have stuck with this deeply unserious stuff

skroz kul

I do not listen to much punk rock but I enjoyed this album. I can see this would appeal to those who are fans of this genre. This album has some strong songs, but the rest of the album was good, buy nothing special. No bad songs just nothing else that knocked my socks off. Very close to a 4 but some more noteworthy songs could have brought it to a 4. Definitely peaked my interest in Green Day.

Great introduction to Green Day and a must if anyone is new to this group who have been around for decades. Good listen.

Yep, it's Green Day. Bright, brash, cheeky and tuneful, understandable why it was such a huge kerplunk into mainstream music. A ton of bands sounded like this, but like Nirvana, the world just needed an intensely polished and accessible verison of the style to go nuts over. Some of the lesser-heard mid-album songs are pretty good, I can't even hear the hits anymore due to overplay, they just sound like white noise. All things considered the world could have picked a worse band to elevate to their level (and often did).

I’m very mixed on Green Day as a whole. I always have been. I feel like I should really like them, but I never really have. Yet, at the same time, I grew up with them and have heard quite a bit more Green Day than many other bands, so they still hold a special place in my heart. Every song on this album is hit or miss to me. It’s got so many all time classics. I have a lot of favorites, like “Basket Case”, “Welcome to Paradise”, and “When I Come Around.” Most other songs on the album are relatively forgettable. I’m going to give it 3 stars because I’ve never really vibed with Green Day personally but I respect them a whole lot. The guitar playing rocks, the vibes rock, but as much as I hate to say it I’ve never really resonated with Billie’s singing, and repeated listens didn’t change that. I can’t disagree with people who give this one a 5 star rating, but it’s just not something I would find myself listening to a whole lot.

Listened to this one 100s of times when it came out. Definitely an iconic album for the period. Too bad they turned out to be fake punks and became shills for the man. Glad to see Billy Joe and Dick Cheney are now on the same team.

Kyllä tykkään tällaisesta punk-popista ja laulu on selkeää ja kivaa kuten aina.

Not my taste

A bit on the overrated side. There are better punk albums out there and this is a touch too poppy for me. Still, there's enough good tracks here to keep this humming along. I've appreciated more as I've gotten older but I still prefer The Ramones or The Clash.

Welcome to paradise has a good hook and bass. Basket Case is a classic. When I come around is another classic and very nostalgic. I remember discovering it in middle school and I just loved the prominent bass and how short and chunky the guitar sounds. Only 3 stars because overall it’s not my favorite album. Nothing crazy impressive.

Nostalgic album! Standouts for me are “Basket Case” and “When I Come Around”. The beginning of the album was a tad repetitive but I liked the guitars and drums overall. Defos felt more punk than pop on the pop punk spectrum. Can’t help but compare with other Green Day albums that I preferred though. No doubt an influential one!

1. Stoner song. Apathy and boredom in suburbia. Good production for a '94 album. 2. Very much not having a blast. It's kinda giving suicide bomber. They were really working through some emotions with this album. 3. Eh. Good instrumental break, but otherwise a mid song. 4. One of their more memorable songs. Heard this before. Probably a single. I Like it. Can relate to having no motivation and being bored. "My mother says to get a job, but she don't like the one she's got." OH shit do I relate to this! No wonder their still relevant. Wait...is this song about jerking it? 5. Really like the melody of this one. He seems to title songs sarcastically a lot with this album. Very much not paradise. About being homeless/leaving home for the first time/living in a crappy situation. 6. Domestic violence (he's the victim) in an upbeat tempo. 7. Basket Case, another classic. Subtle nod to Billie Joe's bisexuality. Good on him for even kinda doing that in '94. 8. Feeling like you have no choices in life. Like everything is already planned out and you don't get a say. 9. Wasting time. 10. Another familiar song. In many coming of age movies. 11. Coming clean about something, maybe his sexuality? 12. Meeting an old friend that's different now. 13. Toxic relationship, the aftermath anyway. 14. Nice acoustic song, unexpected, then back to punk. 15. Such a weird, goofy, and un-serious ending to an album. 6.9/10

Theres nothing wrong with it for sure, and it can actually be a fun listen at times, but I did get somewhat tired of it by the end. I think theres a few too many songs, where, because theres so many, the album does not stay musically interesting the whole way through. That said, I wouldnt mind if someone queued up some songs from it at a party or something. Best: Welcome to Paradise Worst: All by Myself

Punk rock emo

Especially now it's easy to forget that Green Day used to be a punk band, but it sure was fun when they were!

I never got into Green Day when I was younger—I was a Mod, after all—so I must be one of the few people who had never actually listened to Dookie. In hindsight, I would’ve loved this album if I’d given it a chance back then. With 15 songs packed into just 38 minutes, it’s exactly what good punk music should be: tight, fast, and full of energy. Dookie is fun, guitar-driven pop-punk with standout tracks like Basket Case and Welcome to Paradise. It’s clear why this album is so highly regarded—it’s catchy, confident, and bursting with youthful attitude. That said, I feel like I’ve now had my fill of Green Day. Since Dookie is often considered their best work, I’m happy to leave it there. Favourite track: Basket Case Least favourite: Honestly, I enjoyed everything on the album. Album artwork: Really cool cover—busy, playful, and very '90s.

Really solid 3/5. Fun listen. Longview, Welcome to Paradise, Basket Case, & When I Come Around are timeless classics, a lot of the rest of the album drags for me, especially near the end. “She” has a neat opening base line that I haven’t heard before.

Not my type but i would like to listen to it as a background music in public. 3/5

I like some of it... def some bangers and I know it's a classic.

reminds me of my asshole cousin (rip) i prefer their albums directly after this one

#106 - Huge in its time, and of its time. It's a decent album.

Was decent stuff. 3 stars

I like this style and wish there was more pop punk on the list. But a lot of the songs just sounded the same - I’d like a bit more variety. The songs from this album that became hits make sense (basically just Basket Case and When I Come Around). The others were a bit blah. Still enjoyable though.

Aceleracion

Koselig!

It’s a good album, but I can’t believe Green Day were ver called “punk”. Pop-punk, maybe. Sure. But people forgot punk even existed in less than 15 years. At least wlthey were doing an approximation. Green Day are a good listen but super overrated.

it's ok..

Very enjoyable, did get slightly repetitive but I enjoyed it as a whole

I respect Green Day for creating the sound of 90s rock.

3.2/kind of mid but gotta respect the sound of the time

The drummer‘s got chops, but all the guitar player plays is power chords. The songs can be catchy but a whole album of this style does get a bit fatiguing

So much nostalgia. Longview and Basket Case are 10/10 tracks idc what ya say.

This was an decent album

I know this album sold like a billion copies, but as a kid at the time Green Day seemed like a second-rate, unserious band compared to the big-name grunge and alternative bands at the time. I imagine their schtick played better on the West Coast than in my hometown among the prairieland of Illinois. Which is fair; I'm sure they don't appreciate Midwest Emo like we do. Anyway, I have to give them credit for the big five singles off this album. The drums in particular are noteworthy, but overall this is not the type of thing I want to listen to.

not the kind of music i listen to regularly but can't deny it's a banger!!

classic green day. basket case moment

From the era my children were becoming musically aware so I'm really open to hear this. Listening, I'm aware that I have heard many of these songs, just nor that mindfully. Tight sound. Simple. Energy.

Basket Case and When I Come Around are still pretty great songs.

I bought this album when it came out, loved it and still have it on cassette. I have of course listened to it in the intervening years but today I felt I didnt appreciate it as much as I did then. Perhaps that time the bands who were making this post punk music were not very listenable and Dookie looked good by comparison. It IS a good album but I feel three stars is my score today.

Solide mit paar richtig guten Songs

Pop-punk from my New Wave Goth days.

OK I guess. Indifferent. Has a brash and shiny feel to it which seems the antithesis of punk. (Nope, hadn't ever listened to the album before today).

It’s Green Day

It’s still a great album but think it sits between a 3 and a 4

I like it but not really a huge fan of this album

Enjoyed it, didn't love it. But also definitely not my favourite genre

Aside from the notable 90s pop punk anthems we all know on here, there isn’t much that captures my attention. As we’ve navigated further from when this album was made its vinn diagram with other contemporaries has greater overlap. I hear Blind Melon’s “No Rain” at the end of “Longview” for example. As a side note, I was a 90s MTV kid and nothing described my experience more than “Longview”.

Generic but not offensive

Quite teenagery. Innocuous. one seemed almost like a folk song but played with power chords reminded me of the byrds. Not sure would listen again

Green Day isn't really a band I care for but I think moreso from the fact that their music isn't my style rather than any of their reputation or something. In general I would have avoided any of their music but today (or rather yesterday) it was Dookie. I think despite all of what I said before this album is pretty alright, really riding that tightrope between the more mild and power poppy Ramone's esque pop punk vs the 00s poppier and somewhat heavier pop punk that would become more popular since this album's release and it works I think, it gets heavier and exciting like it needs to along with some really sweet and catchy melodies, the biggest knock I could give is that I don't love the "style" of singing Billy Joe (and really most 00s pop punk), it's just kind of repetitive and as well how some songs towards the latter half start to blend in for me, which makes it kind of a chore, but I mean... other than that I think I enjoyed this one wayyy more than I initially thought I would.

I haven’t listen to this album since high school. Although never a big Green Day, I can respect what they did.

This used to be one of my favorite albums! But, now I just think there isn't enough substance to it. There's still some bomb ass bangers though.

I really wished I like this more but there was only a couple songs I liked

Nice album. Straight rock and roll. Got a little repetitive and mundane for me, but an enjoyable listen.

actually kinda disappointed on revisiting it. my memory was coloured by the tracks i remembered well, but the rest was, well... forgettable

Dookie did not invent pop punk, not even close, but was a before and after moment for the genre, and it's a perfect encapsulation of the appeal of it. If someone wanted to know what pop punk is, you could do a hell of a lot worse than just showing them Dookie. This is a record full of frustration, anxiety and suburban ennui. Songs are about getting crushing boredom, getting mad at your parents and trying to find your way in the world. Billie Joe Armstrong sounds distinct and snotty and maybe a little bit obnoxious. And the songs are perfect little blasts of pop songwriting: simple, catchy and energetic. Basically, Dookie is the perfect album to capture the attention of a wide audience of disillusioned teens. If you found this in the right place, at the right time, I can see it being an all time favorite for you. That being said, while I understand the appeal of Dookie, and I do like it more than I don't, pop punk just kind of isn't my thing, but I can understand that this is a masterpiece of the genre. Besides, I can throw it on and bob along from front to back, so I can't complain too much.

Real nostalgia, but didn’t hold up for me as well as expected.
