A BANGER!!! I love mid-60s Beatles!!
Not my favorite Beatles album, but a good album nonetheless. The standout track for me is "If I Needed Someone". This album doesn't hit as hard as Revolver or Abbey Road, but showcases what the Beatles were good at: coming up with catchy hooks and grooves. This gets a 7/10 from me. 3.5
Hun eerste volwaardige meesterwerk. Hun folkrockplaat vol betoverende harmonieën. The Beatles hadden Bob Dylan ontmoet met een grote pot weed. Tieneridolen Beatles worden volwassen artiesten. Lennon vindt zijn draai écht met de introspectieve kant van het songschrijverschap. Harisson vindt zijn sitar. Veel waardering voor deze plaat komt ongetwijfeld door de muzikale opvoeding die ik van mijn vader heb meegekregen. Raar dansen op de keukenvloer kan op alle goeie muziek. Merci vader! Een plaat geschikt voor zoveel gelegenheden. Vandaag een paar keer na elkaar opgezet. Vanaf deze plaat (en eigenlijk vanaf Help! al) zijn voor mij alle Beatles platen 5 sterrenplaten. Ze staat vol klassiekers maar een persoonlijke favoriet: I'm Looking Through You
Ondanks veel goede nummers, nog net iets te veel pop Beatles om heel het album steeds op te zetten. Beetje meer drugs pakken jongens.
4.5 Eerder! Zowieso 1 van mijn favoriete albums, met een paar nummers die wel op de verzamelcd van mijn leven mogen staan: Girl, In my life, Michelle. En dan hebt ge nog Norwegian Wood, Nowhere man., ... De meeste toppers zijn toch wel eerder John Lennon nummers op deze. Toch kan ik geen 5 sterren geven, omdat ik een paar andere Beatles albums beter vind, plus dat er af en toe wel een misser is qua song op Rubber Soul (What goes on). Dit is ook het eertste album vanaf wanneer de Beatles echt interessant beginnen te worden voor mij. Alles daarvoor is 'een beetje' hetzelfde , hier beginnen ze pas echt te experimenteren. Dan hebben ze albums gemaakt in de jaren 60 die, naar mijn mening, minder gedateerd klinken dan bijvoorbeeld het album hiervoor van Public Enemy uit de jaren 80. Love The Beatles forever.
It was fine. I know I should love the Beatles but I can see why they're important but really can't enjoy them very much. A couple songs in here I can listen to endlessly but I wanted to skip most of them. I wish I got them but I don't.
Great Album
Not the biggest Beatles fan, but it's alright
Maybe the first truly great Beatles album? With this album the Beatles moved from being a remarkable pop band to a visionary, envelope-pushing band. There's far too much to say about how much ground is broken in this album. The quality of the songwriting and recording is a huge step from early Beatles recordings. The album is varied yet cohesive. It has both great pop hits and more profound songs. This album sets up a remarkable streak of innovative releases from the band.
Dig it. Also listened to Abbey road and revolver the last two days. This album struck me as more natural, less produced, more just jamming out a bit.

It was fine, I've heard all the songs before so it was nothing new. Nothing life changing. Nowhere Man, Michelle, and In My Life were favorites.
The Beatles are just fine in my opinion. I think the album is fine but just heard way too many times. I will give the album three stars.

This and Revolver are my two favorite Beatles albums. On any given day I'll say one or the other, but it's a perfect album regardless

One of my favourite albums.
7/10 This one is hard to rate because it was the one Beatles album that my parents owned. Even as a child I could feel the "sixties-ness" of songs like The Word. I liked this Beatles album, but it was never my favorite. I get that this is when they began morphing into the psychedelic band that they would become, but this one feels like it has a foot in both worlds and doesn't quite surpass the version they were before or the version they would become. Really noticed how great Paul's bass playing is on this listen.

Este disco es de cinco estrellas aún sabiendo que otros de los suyos deberían ser de 6 o 7.
After listening to Rubber Soul. I can tell you that while The Beatles do have their fans, I'm certainly not one of them. None of the songs really managed to stand out to me in this album (except for Drive My Car, Norwegian Wood, Girl and I'm Looking Through You). Overall, While it wasn't terrible, It did little to change my impression of the band Best Song: I'm Looking Through You Worst Song: Run For Your Life

Jeetje, we worden wel verwend hoor. Na Pink Floyd en Radiohead nu de Beatles! Het album begint naar mijn mening sterk met Drive my Car, met de geniale Beep beep outro. Norwegian Wood ken ik ook nog, tot mijn eigen verbazing en luisterd ook lekker weg. Michelle herken ik ook van een ander nummer. Sowieso valt het me nu pas op hoeveel invloeden van The Beatles in bijvoorbeeld hiphop zitten. Heel erg nice. Ik speel een soort van het "Herken het sampletje" wat erg bijdraagt aan hoe ik het album luister. Voorbeeld: Michelle word gesampled in Navajo van Masego. Ohja, dit album verder? Eh het is prima, niet fantastisch en een beetje zoals ik The Beatles ken. Denk dat ik het 3 sterren geef - Prima. FAVO: Drive my car, Michelle
Really loved this album less one song
Transitional album between early Beatles and Superstar Beatles. Their first iconic album. Highlights: Drive My Car Norwegian Wood Girl In My Life
The beatles very rarely miss with their music and this was another example of that. Track 10 was a stand out track, but I enjoyed all of them. This isn't their strongest album but it's still a good album.
This one used to be my favourite Beatles album as a kid, and that might still be true. It's hard to pick a favourite. The harmonies are quite good on this one, which is probably a big part of why kid me liked it so much. Not quite into the weird stuff yet, but there are still hints of what's to come. I like early and later Beatles quite a lot, but the middle period might be my favourite era because of how it balances the sounds of the eras it's sandwiched between. I love most of the songs on here, with the only exception being The Word. My favourite songs, though it's really hard to pick, would be Michelle, You Won't See Me, and If I Needed Someone.

Rock 'n' Roll's history has some good examples of famous bands that ascended along an arc of commercial success, and then gave us a clear inflection point in their artistic expression after which nothing would ever be the same. This list will likely point to quite a few of them, but this record arguably changed everything.
I'm biased because I love the Beatles and Rubber Soul is one of my favorite albums they've made. Aside from "Run for Your Life," this album holds up really well and doesn't have a weak track. My personal favorites are "Girl," "In My Life," and "I'm Looking Through You."

Not the best not the worst, I like a few of the tracks and found others boring. The production is a bit strained in places too.

This is my favourite Beatles album. The songs are forever interesting to listen to and the instruments varied and well chosen for each track.

Amazing album top to bottom. Run for Your Life is a little creepy, but still a great tune. The intro riff to Drive My Car is as iconic as any riff in history. The album has all of what made the Beatles unique and is definitely a turning point.

3/5. A lot of people say this is their favorite Beatles album and it’s hard to believe they listened to any of the later Beatles albums. Some songs in the middle and the last few songs are not classics. There are definitely some great ones here like In My Life and Norwegian Wood, but some not great ones like The Word and Wait. It’s still good but I don’t think I’d put this on over most other Beatles albums.

Not my favorite Beatles album, but then again, I don't have a favorite. Just meh.
The link between the more poppy Help! and the more experimental Revolver, Rubber Soul was a transitional album in the band's catalogue. It is amazing how much their sound changed in just a few months (Norwegian Wood, If I Needed Someone, Think For Yourself), in 1965 and how much better they become as songwriters (Michelle, In My Life, Girl, Drive My Car) - in this sense, this album was the turning point for The Beatles. Rubber Soul may not be among their Top 3 or Top 4 albums - the more groundbreaking records came after this one, but it's still an excellent album and one of the most important ones in the 1960s which definitely deserves nothing less than a 5.

It's fine. Nothing really hooked me in, but not hard to listen to either. Hoped to finally start seeing why everyone makes such a big deal about this group, but I'm still missing it.

A collection of beautiful songs in a range of styles. Didn't gel as an album as much as I'd imagined it might.
It's one of their best albums. In My Life was my first dance with my husband at our wedding so this album will always be special to me.

never thought i would be a "i like the beatles but only in mono" kind of guy but here i am. doesnt hit the same in stereo.
The Beatles redefining pop and what a complete album is: not just a collection of singles. It's a great listen. They creatively implement baroque sounds and sitar + harpsichord to make the record more than just folk rock. The biggest standout is "In My Life" and it's earworm melody.
Good to revisit. Love Michelle, best song on the album 8/10
Fun album. Sounds like the Beatles although there aren't that many recognizable tracks for me. Weird song about killing a girl that doesn't want to be with him... oddly dark
A classic by a classic band
This album kicked off the best run of Beatles albums. Psychedelia and folk influences fuse together on a bunch of great songs.
In my youth, Rubber Soul was my favorite Beatles album. Lately I've been favorite others (Revolver, Let It Be). Still this one is loaded with great songs. The song ordering feels a little random at times, but it's still quite enjoyable end to end.

Nearly perfect... I totally hear them developing their psychedelic sound and bridging the gap from their mop-top-boy-band ways.
The Beatles are that one band that people just won't let you dislike. "It's influential! It's influential!" they scream at you...uh ok? I thought we were judging how good the music sounds, not what other people thought of it. Was a bit disheartened when I found this site to see that the top albums are littered with the usual bunch of Beatles albums that everywhere else is. I just can't for the life of me understand what the big deal is. And honestly, around their time there were other incredible artists that I think were both more important and influential, and their music has stood the test of time. Bands like The Velvet Underground, The Stooges or The Doors. They definitely have a couple better albums than this, but nothing to write home about.
Absolute classic. This might be my favourite Beatles album.

The almost cultural icons make an almost masterpiece. Not quite completely elevated from their previous work, but if it had been the last record they made it would have been quite a legacy.
Cmon, this is an easy 5. Every song is strong in its own way and I think having the diversity of three different composers is a major strength.

I just heard this album the other day, on vinyl! However, it was the North American version, leaving out one of my favourites, "Nowhere Man" (and inserting "I've Just Seen A Face", also one of my favourites :D - among other changes) When I first got into the Beatles, I wasn't big on Rubber Soul (compared to other Beatles; I still heard it a lot). Yet it has two of my top 10 Beatles songs in it ("In My Life" & "Nowhere Man"), at least three others I had to learn on guitar ("I'm Looking Through You", "Norwegian Wood" & "Girl"), and even the most throwaway tracks have quite a bit of replay value to me ("The Word", "Wait", "If I Needed Someone", "Michelle" [don't @ me]) 14 stars, one for every track, minus one for "Run For Your Life", so 13 stars then July 7, 2023
Rubber Soul is one of the pinnacles of the music we call rock and roll. It shows the Beatles taking a huge leap forward in new musical styles, songwriting, and instrumentation. From the more adventurous bass playing by Paul McCartney to the new more mature songs of John Lennon like Norwegian Wood, Girl, and In My Life showed that the Beatles were just warming up…and the best was still yet to come!
2nd listen. I like it more than I did before. It’s definitely on the higher end of 3 stars, but because I’m not really into any one song on it, it doesn’t get to 4 for me.

If you would have asked me a decade or so ago what I thought of the Beatles I would have told you I didn't like their music and it's no good. Had I listened to their music extensively? Absolutely not. Did I want to be a hater and dislike the things that many others enjoyed? Absolutely! Today, I do not have strong feelings towards the Beatles one way or another. The popular stuff that gets played everywhere I actually do enjoy a bit! I have made no effort to listen further though. And that will probably continue unless it's through more albums in this list. As for Rubber Soul, I actually enjoyed the whole thing! I think it was quite good and I was bopping along the whole way. Is this music technically impressive? Hell if I know. Is it inspired? Maybe not. Was it fun to listen to for half an hour? Absolutely. And that's good enough for me, man. Songs that stuck out to me: Think For Yourself, Michelle, Wait, and Run For Your Life. Finding perhaps their most unlikely ally, I'm here to save the Beatles from this group of haters.
The good news, the songs only last about 2.5 minutes. The terrible news, there are 14 songs. Enough of these guys already. Lennon was a POS human. F off with this band.
Another day another Beatles' album. I don't feel like I have a ton to say about this album. It's well done. Production is about as good as it can be. Some bonafide hits. Everything else is just static in the noise that makes up the Beatles' music. Perfectly listenable but not very memorable. Girl is really good though. I like that one. 2.5
2 Supposedly this album marks when The Beatles started getting into drugs, and while it’s noticeably less bubblegum-y than their prior work, I still didn’t find anything here to be overly interesting - even with some new flourishes like the sitar on Norwegian Wood, a song which is apparently John Lennon’s attempt at putting a fun spin on him cheating his wife. F that guy. Paul’s songs are definitely the better ones here (surprise, surprise), but even then I wouldn’t call them great. Really, I don’t think there’s anything here I would call outright enjoyable, but I can point to the opener Drive My Car is probably the worst thing on the album. The only thing worse than the lyrics are the Beatles fans trying to build upon them on Genius. For example, the annotation for “Beep beep'm beep beep yeah!” reads: “This iconic transition utilizes onomatopoeia for the sound of a car’s horn. It serves to illustrate how much fun The Beatles are having with their newfound fame and success.” End me. As if to bring the album full-circle, the group decided to end on another low point with a song threatening to murder a partner if she were ever to take another man. I know it’s based on a song by Elvis and isn’t totally out of place in that era of music, but I don’t think that makes it any better. Everything in the middle is kind of meh, but with there being a song titled What Goes On, I will give a shoutout to my Dad’s guy Lou Reed and his group The Velvet Underground, who have a song with the same name that, despite having half as many Spotify plays, is like 1000x better. Considering that’s the Ringo song on this album though, maybe that’s a given (sorry Ringo). Man, despite usually keeping it in the 30-minute range, I swear these guys always seem to find a way to make their albums drag. That being said, I think some of the art rock/experimental stuff we’ve heard has really redefined for me what true 1 means, so I’m going to go with a 2 here, but either way I won’t be listening again anytime soon.

For me, I think every album by the Beatles is a 5 star thing. I saw someone say that it was tempting to give this one a 4 because there are others that the writer preferred more. I feel the same way, but listening to this...the sheer number of great songs overwhelms that feeling. 5 stars it is.
Feels like the bridge album between early and late Beatles.
Basically a textbook on pop songwriting. Absolute classic. Last song is a little rapey but is perhaps the Beatles best album? Id give it a strong 9/10 but I won't give it 5 stars cos it's not quite 10

If you pair "Rubber Soul" with its immediate successor, "Revolver", you basically get a double-album. The two sound so much alike. And both are incredibly good.

Yea this album kicks ass. Like seriously, Nowhere Man is a thundering killer track. Michelle is another banger, but every track has a sparkle, a little sheen.

Another true classic; the album that transformed The Beatles from a pop band to an eclectic rock band. And then of course, John Lennon famously said the Beatles were bigger than Jesus a year later and things took a turn for the counter culture. Rubber Soul was the last Beatles album with a popular consensus of being "great." And it is great.
A great album! Remaster version is very technical.

Highlights: "I'm Looking Through You," "You Won't See Me," "Drive My Car," "Norwegian Wood" Everything has been said, but just to cast my vote: one of the Beatles' absolute best, with one foot in their old sound and one in the new. They seemed to accumulate styles over time, and by now we have a nice diverse blend of '50s rock, Byrds, Dylan, jokey ragtime, Paul's chamber dabbling, and sparkles of their emerging take on 'psych'. It also has some of their clearest, most balanced songwriting, with lots of material that manages to handle negative emotions, powerfully expressed, in a suitably upbeat musical mood. We only got a few like this before they flew all the way up their own asses forever. It's too bad it trips so hard at the finish line with "Run for your Life," which with hindsight about John Lennon's abuse is totally abhorrent. "Norwegian Wood" is notoriously ominous in this way too. Again, fuck John Lennon. Otherwise, maybe not especially influential in its own right among their catalogue, but a standard of pop excellence.
Remarkably listenable considering it's nearing 60 years old, but largely unremarkable.

Good. Love me some real Beatles folk rock after listening to McCartney's messy self-titled effort with folk. A lot of people describe this as their "turning point" or "start of maturity as songwriters", making it seem like a mere stepping stone from one artistic area to another. But in reality, this sounds like a whole, well-developed, and amazing artistic statement.
The beginnings of greatness 4/5
The album where the influence of their US tour and return from the beginnings of Beatlemania also starts to show the groups changing influence and lays the path for them to move from the pop band they started out as to the experimental band that doesn't tour. This is the entry into my personal favorite period of the Beatles, the one where they make music for themselves and release lightning from a bottle. 4.5/5.

Y’all can crucify me if you want, I’ve just never been able to click with early Beatles albums… Definitely some great songs off here, and I absolutely see the influence that this album had on both the Beatles’ future discography and popular music as a whole, but it’s just not my thing, unfortunately. I knew most of the songs before, but not all of them. A lot of variation, and it’s all good. No atrocities like yellow submarine or ob la di. Production is not great. It’s was new and everybody was still learning. Favorite song is hard to pick, ‘cause they’re so different: Girl.
Once again, the stereo version available on streaming is an awful headphone listen. Mono is a must for Beatles albums before Sgt Pepper.
Sublime, storytelling led songwriting. Certainly my favourite Beatles album. In My Life and Norwegian Wood are career highlights imo.

Among my all-time favourite album. It saw them all embrace different styles but still held together. A perfect transition from the fab four days into more control over there musical destiny. The Dylan influence starts to show, and we get these inventive songs.
You can write endlessly about The Beatles and their influence, etc. This album is one of the reasons why. Just an easy 5 stars here folks.

This album starts very strong and finishes strong but the middle stretch is what really lets it down. Every song from "Nowhere Man" to "Girl" blends into the other and I find it impossible to give a crap about any one of them. Just so it doesn't sound overly negative, I do actually quite like this album. That stretch is a letdown but it's still very nice, just not up to anywhere near the same standard as the others. When I first set this one going it was before I went out on a long walk and I remember exactly where I was when I realised that, hey, that Johnny Cash song was a cover of a Beatles song! And the original "In My Life" is much better. The folky interlude bit in the middle is beautiful, incredibly so. "I'm Looking Through You" is great fun, and Norwegian Wood is the best song on here. I was about to write that it's one of Harrison's best compositions except for the fact that he didn't write it, which does somewhat disqualify it. In my defense, sitar. But in the end the long middle stretch of comparative blandness kind of scuppers this one for me. Perfectly inoffensive but it's probably worth taking the best songs off it, sticking them on a playlist and sticking to Revolver.

I don't know why I had such a disdain for The Beatles but it's been very prominent for most of my journey with music. It could perhaps be attributed to the fact that there's this idea being promulgated of them being the greatest band of all time. Unfortunately, because of this I refused to really absorb their music. Maybe it's also the fact that I am older and have found a love for music in the 60s. Regardless I'm really liking this album. Yes, compared to modern music it sounds very stripped back but it doesn't take away from the innovation. As a matter of a fact there's a lot to appreciate in the songwriting. There's unique instruments being used that save each song from Vacuity. I am happy to say I now can appreciate their music.

This album really takes me back to my teenage years and it has some great tracks. Norwegian Wood is a particular favourite and George was my favourite Beatle. Even adding the nostalgia element I think it’s got to be a high 3*, not quite 4

Slightly more variety than their first albums while retaining their shorter length and simpler structure, but not yet going more experimental or conceptual as with their later albums. I like this album a lot as a transition. There are a few weaker tracks and moments but it isn’t too long and is overall a very enjoyable listen.

It's the Beatles. It's Rubber Soul. Of course it's a 5 star album. For me this is where the Beatles become the best band in the world ever. Not that there's anything wrong with the previous output. They already were the best band at doing what they were doing and they were starting to push the boundaries of that pop band mount. Here is where they started to carve out a whole new path. The album where they became The Beatles. They picked up Dylan, motown, the Byrds and everything else that was going on and made their own record which blew all of them away. Yes. And from here on in, it only continues to get better.

Easily one of my favorite Beatles albums and the most consistently good of their early albums. I didn't dislike any song on the album but it did have a couple meh songs like "Wait" and "Norwegian Wood". Despite that it has a couple of my favorite pre-psych Beatles songs in "Nowhere Man", "Drive My Car", "You Won't See Me", "Girl" and "Michelle". Overall I think this was their best album up to this point and was to me easily the best of their albums before they entered their psychedelia phase. A solid 9.5/10 and it only didn't get a 10 because of the few meh songs above but the rest of the album is easily 10/10 material.
Beep beep, beep beep, ja! I went through this waiting for the inevitable weak track. There are none. I’m no Beatles maven, but I think this is their finest record. It also sounds fantastic, clear, each element sitting in its own space, quietly astonishing in the lack of sonic congestion despite all that’s going on. It somehow sounds both rich and minimalist. And some of the guitar sounds are seriously raunchy, though never ostentatiously so. Such a happy opening cowbell spree! A close listen is rewarded here.

It the Beatles. It’s one of their best. Run for your life is a stain that should lose it a half point but there aren’t half points and it’s nearer a 5 than a 4.
So I'm not the biggest Beatles fan in the world, I like them fine I just never connected with them on a deep personal level like a lot of people do. That being said I think this album collectively is one of my favorites of theirs. I agree with everyone above that the last track (Run For Your Life) is my least favorite but I like everything else. 4/5.

I could happily sit here and sing along with every single song. The songs, the melodies, the harmonies are all spot on and so, so good. Apart from the wildly inappropriate 'Run For Your Life' this is an almost perfect album. 4 / 5 stars.

Genres: Folk rock, rock, pop Formed: Liverpool in 1960 Run time: 14 songs, 35 min 32 sec I love some Beatles songs, some are too poppy for me. This album fits that. Despite being only a 35 minute album it crams in 14 songs, all of which are concise and perfectly formed. As song writers, Lennon and McCartney are amazing. They might be equalled, but they won’t be surpassed. The track “The Word”, which I have never heard of and don’t recall ever listening to has over 15M plays on Spotify. Unbelievable! Most tracks have over 10M plays, and three have over 100M plays. I enjoyed the album, and it’s great to read about the tracks and their origins, which is possible because they are so well analysed. My Rating: ****

The start of the ascent for the Beatles. Not much of a fan of the earlier pop stuff, but what came after was utterly groundbreaking. Revolver and Sgt Peppers are surely up there with the greatest albums (though it's almost a crime they decided not to include Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane on Sgt Peppers. Rubber Soul is the bridge between those two eras. Some great songs with signs of what was to come with some experimentalism, and it starts off strong. There are a few weaker tracks as the album chugs along, before ending with the absolutely terrible Run for Your Life. This one has aged particularly badly, especially once you find out about Lennon's wifebeating past. In isolation, this album is probably 3*, but knowing what was to come, and knowing this was the catalyst, makes me want to uplift it slightly.
Fine OK?! Its a FINE album. The Beatles are fine. Four stars.

Genre: Classic rock Review: Thanks to my twin bro Mani, I was introduced to The Beatles when I was in college. Having been exposed repeatedly to media that glorified and revered them as the greatest, I found early on that they were a fun band to listen to, with catchy songs and simple beats. It's only after years and years of listening to all kinds of music does it really sink in how great their music actually is. Rubber Soul is one of the best examples of their irrefutable quality - wonderfully written tracks, with beautiful music and a sound that will last forever. Rating: Are you kidding? Obviously 10/10
Do I need to say anything about this masterpiece? Has long been my favorite Beatles album - or music albums period - upbeat, creative, diverse and endlessly replayable. Heard both the UK and the US release tracklists. Easy 5/5.

A classic Beatles album with rumblings of the greatness to come. For those who prefer their Beatles poppier and only a tiny bit experimental, this is probably the group's zenith. 'Drive My Car', 'Nowhere Man', 'In My Life', 'Michelle' - there's just so much to love on this album.

Day 13 Oh, hey. It's the Beatles. Weird they'd add a small obscure band like them on here. We continue the trend of me not knowing a single song on here which is weird cause well... it's the Beatles. Whelp let's get into it. Drive My Car - 7 - the chorus on this one is pretty good Norwegian Wood - 6 You Won't See Me - 5 - the deciding point on whether this was a 5 or 6 was whether there was a guitar solo (or any other instrument solo) just cause it feels like that's what it's leading to and there wasn't one Nowhere Man - 6 - it's fine Think For Yourself - 5 - mid The Word - 5 - it doesn't help that I'm listening to this while sleep deprived but this song sounds largely the same as the rest to me so far Michelle - 9 - the choice to use the voices as the backing instruments is so good and then the little guitar solo rocks too. And the main singing is actually good. Incredibly good change of pace. What Goes On - 4 - and then we go back to songs like this that sound like CCR at their hillbillyest Girl - 8 - like Michelle but worse but trust me when I say it's not worse by much. Clearly I'm a sucker for whatever the sound in these types of songs are. Looking Through You - 5 In My Life - 7 - I liked it but not quite as much as the other ones Wait - 7 - nice song, sounds the most rock of any song on the album yet If I Needed Someone - 5 - eh Run For Your Life - 5 Overall: I think the album is pretty mediocre except for some fantastic highlights. 84/140 or 60%

I can't believe that I've listened to 157 records on this generator before I got 1 Beatles album, because I'm assuming that there are quite a few in this list. Historically, I've been known to not be a huge fan of the Beatles. I never cared for their poppy stuff too much, but always understood how influential they were in the grand scheme of music. This album, however, was a bit of a stray from their usual poppy crap, and they were testing the waters of psychadelica/blues rock a bit here. Certainly albums that followed (Revolver/Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band) delved into these genres heavier, but this album was the start of that shift. I thoroughly enjoyed the country/blues rock feel of the song What Goes On, and the inclusion of a sitar in the song Norwegian Wood was great! The song Run For Your Life was a bit jarring, and a weird way to end a record, but it was still a great song. The reason I tend to hate the Beatles is because apparently to make a Beatles song, all you need is harmonizing, "Ooh La La La's", and a fuck ton of tambourine work, which this album has a bit of, but not too much. Overall, a good record from a very influential band. The Beatles aren't in heavy rotation for me, but a few of these songs may make it onto a playlist for sure. Favourite songs: What Goes On, Run For Your Life, Norwegian Wood, I'm Looking Through You, Drive My Car, The Word Least favourite song: Girl 4/5
One of the great albums.
A lot of well-known songs, including one of the most beautiful songs in the world: In My Life. It’s interesting to listen knowing what was ahead of them. The songwriting has taken a big departure from the early doo-wop pop numbers but many of the arrangements are still rough and ready guitar band with close-harmony. Overall there isn’t a consistent sound and the quality of the songs is variable. For that reason, it isn’t an album I listen back to.

It's one of those ones where I have to be harsh because of who it is. While it has the strongest opening tracks (idiots fave Drive My Car, the back to back classics with Norwegian Wood, You Won't See Me and Nowhere Man) it gets very saggy (by Beatles standards later on. Though that sag includes Michelle, In My Life and I'm Looking Through You, so, still a country mile ahead of the competition. In short, this is the last Beatles album containing any filler till the White Album. It's a Beatles 4, which would be any other bands career defining 5. And Run For Your Life is just odious. We get it John, you woman hating piece of sh!t.

Yes, it’s supposed to be the album which showed the world that the Beatles could actually write songs, and started to experiment, which would ultimately lead to Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band, yadiyadiyadiyadi… But it’s still Beatles and not the Rolling Stones. I just have not the patience for an entire album of this polished britpop.
•Performances: John and Paul are perfect match vocally in this album! Compared to the group’s first four albums, “Rubber Soul” is the Beatles in more matured period of their lives. “Drive My Car” is wonderful opener with probably the most hooky chorus in the album, “Nowhere Man” is a campy tune from John and Paul, and “Michelle” is, melodically, the most beautiful song in the record. •Production: When I read the title, I thought it was going to be something along the lines of Amy Winehouse’s type of sound, but it’s probably closer to what I hear in Tame Impala’s music: psychedelic rock music in its most primitive state. The use of the sitar in the album brings out that sound without using much effects and reverb. Score: strong 7 to a light 8

I really enjoyed this. Found it went by relatively quickly and before I knew it I’d listened to it 3 or 4 times over. Different to what I was expecting, I found it more ‘radio friendly’ than other stuff I’ve heard, so I was surprised to hear this was their first album on acid. ‘Girl’ was probably my favourite, reminded me a bit of Zorba the Greek… but actually I think most songs are strong and work well together
I thought this middle era Beatles stuff might turn out to be my favourite, was hoping for a good blend of rocky earlier stuff and experimental later stuff. Turned out it was just quite bland stuff.

A natural progression of the Beatles formula, and in my opinion the first time you can hear what is to come with albums like Revolver, Sgt. Pepper, etc. It's interesting how all over this album can be quality wise. Like, there's songs like Michelle and Girl, which while being very much like older Beatles songs, feel like a deeper understanding of that style of music. You also have songs like Drive My Car and The Word that really just feel generic and boring. Finally you have songs like Norwegian Wood and In My Life that sound like what's to come more than anything. It's just a situation where for every bad song there's three great songs, but those bad songs still sour the music, leaving to be unable to grasp that five star rating. Still a must listen for that transition period, and still has some fantastic songs (Girl being in my top three Beatles songs), but every Beatles album has good songs.
