Doesn't feel like one of the strongest Beatles album really. 'Drive My Car' is of course a very iconic Beatles song, but other than that I found it quite lackluster. In 'Michelle', I first thought McCartney sang "some day monkeys won't play piano and some, play piano and some" and thought "what is he on about?!". Turns out he sings in french. Either I need to get better at french, or McCartney does. I'd like to think it's the latter. Quite a nice melody, but otherwise ridiculous song. Overall I think you'll like this if you're a Beatles fan, but to me it was just very mediocre. One, maybe two stronger songs, otherwise quite beige. Weak 3.

A good Beatles album that saw an obvious leap in complexity, departing from feel-good pop territory. Not that it’s necessarily a good thing – I’ve always admired the Beatles for their simplicity, the way they initially managed to « do more with less ». Maybe that’s why this album has never been among my favorites and doesn’t speak to me the way other albums do. The band sounds more composed and more professional than before - but also seem to have lost a bit of its original energy, without having reached their technical peak yet. But I guess you can’t catch lightning in a bottle with every album. There’s a few excellent tracks (Norwegian Wood, Michelle, Girl...) along the way, while some others are not as striking or memorable. Overall always a pleasant listen, but not an album I come back to very often.

For a Beatles album, it is one of the better ones with decent hits in Drive My Car and In My Life. However, it is the Beatles, so it doesn't do much for me. I'd be a fan in the '60s but not in this day and age.

I was wondering when I was finally going to get a Beatles album and here we are. 6th album, 14 songs and somehow just 35 minutes! Not sure if I was expecting too much, just because it’s the Beatles. Some great songs on there but felt a fairly consistently good album, with some minor dips. Although all very enjoyable and just quality songwriters. Probably just because I’m aware of stronger albums by them and every song being 10+. Enjoyed this and listened a few times (3.5)

Not bad. I never really “got” the Beatles so this was a decent re-introduction even though the first song is garbage. I appreciate how much content is packed into 35 minutes. Is it wrong that I prefer Lennon’s and Harrison’s lead songs over McCartney’s?

-a classic. this was the first Beatles album i ever listened to back in high school, and it remains one of my favorites i’ve heard so far -really interesting the way they were basically the first people to combine rock with pop music and get big off it in this way. extremely important and influential album -Favorites are Drive My Car, The Word, and Michelle

A weak Beatles album. It felt a bit monotone and felt like it was missing something.

Rubber Soul veered away from the pop flavor of their previous records, and was a bit more genre-blending.. mixing folk, soul, and rock. Songs like "In My Life" show a musical maturity that would become more apparent in future albums.

I think there are some good songs, I think the genre blending is great, I think it was ahead of its time, but it’s not for me. After 3 listens it hasn’t resonated with me unfortunately.

idk if it’s just their influence, but this just felt like 60s pop songs. i get that it’s the beatles, but this is the first time i’ve actually fully listened through an entire beatles album and it was fine, but it didn’t blow my mind the way i expected it to

I'm talking directly to you - yes you Beetles homer on this website. You may be looking at this review saying, how could you be talking to me in particular you don't even know me - but rest assured I do, and I am speaking directly to you - pleading with you. I'm begging you, I'm begging you on behalf of your presumed children too - stop! Stop defaulting that this is a top ten album of all time. Can we please have a sober conversation about the Beetles? If you heard this album for the first time and nobody told you it was The Beetles, would you jump out of your chair like a preteen girl proclaiming this is the among the best albums ever created? Or would you look at the album soberly and say, that's pretty good, some hits, some misses, some cool new ideas but on the whole a pretty pop rock album. I'm not going to disrespect this band by trying to tell you that this is bad, but why are we all losing our mind over this. I know I'm on my soapbox here but I'm willing to die on this hill. And please apologize to your kids for boomer-splaining music to them.

Remarkably diverse with some dated lyrics in a lot of the tracks. Still, definitely a good listen.

Pop music that was part of the shift of the time and for that it is to be commended and studied. But I wouldn't seek this music out by myself.

Only a 3 for me. There are better Beatles albums in my opinion.

No surprises here, one of the most famous bands with another great album. Catchy beats and good lyrics. Some big hit songs. Maybe not their best album but it's not bad. I don't think that I would seek it out again just because I hear them so much in every day life.

My final Beatles record on the list and probably the one I have the least familiarity (outside of Nowhere Man, Drive my Car or Michelle) with, so I figure I’ll give this one an honest review, instead of making light of the Beatles like I usually do. This is a pretty clearly a bridge between their more “traditional” pop sound and the experimentation they’d get into on Revolver, which, I maintain, is the best record they ever made. Rubber Soul is a pretty good record. A lot of these songs, in my opinion, don’t really raise to the levels of their best work, but they also don’t really get bogged down in silliness like some of the songs on Sgt. Peppers, The White Album, or Abby Road do. It’s a pretty straight forward rock record in that regard, even if it tends to have a feel of “old fashioned” rock and roll to it. But again, Revolver is probably their best record, because it’s forward thinking and feels less like a reaction to what was popular or the influence of other popular bands - you can definitely hear the influence that The Byrds’ concurrent success had on this record, particularly on a track like “If I Needed Someone”, with its jangly guitar chords that sound a fair bit like “I’ll Feel A Whole Lot Better” from the Byrds.

pretty lovely etc etc but the latter half starts to weaken imo. it starts real strong, but the middle section from think for yourself through wait gets a little tired. or maybe i am just a philistine!

From time to time I like the Beatles sound but not forever, for a whole album it’s a bit too similar for me. I would have needed some of their classics. 3/5 🦓

Another Beatles pivotal album. What I like: the lyrics that shifted to more mature topics, the diverse arrangement, Ringo's drumming, John 's vocal delivery...especially on In my life and Nowhere man. I am not a fan of McCartney grany muzak and the Harrisongs.

Often (but not always) more exciting than its predecessor, and less cheesy, it’s still an easy and enjoyable listen. That said, the ultra-short 2-minute ‘hit’ format gets frustrating, it feels like a bunch of underdeveloped melodic ideas. Ttracks like “What Goes On” really could’ve been left out. Still waiting for the post-Revolver albums…

The Beatles but unexceptional. It was good, Drive My Car and Norwegian Wood were the highlights, after that it was mostly just background noise.

Pleasant. I listened through three times this morning while doing work, but nothing really stuck.

I really don't get the appeal of the Beatles. I know they were influential and all but their music is just kinda boring. And no, it's not just cause it's been copied and it's old. I like lots of 60s stuff that sounds a lot better than this.

All these Beatles albums sound exactly the same to me

liked songs: Norwegian Wood, Think For Yourself This wasn't bad, but I apparently only like the George Harrison songs. Drive My Car and In My Life are decent songs, but I think I've heard covers of both that vastly improve on the originals. 2.75

RS is a good album with a few big hits on it. But it’s a bit too harmonious and feels like the label asked for something a bit like Donovan, the Beach Boys and Bob Dylan (which you won’t get from a bunch of Scousers). I like my Beatles pulling in four different creative directions to the chagrin of everyone, including each other so this MOR era Fabs doesn’t leave much of a mark. A respectable three, lads.

The Beatles sound is so influential that I feel I heard every song before. But I personally like sgt. Pepper's more. And my all time favorite will always be Let it becouse that's the first Beatles album I listened a lot when I was a kid. I like this album. Just don't think is that memorable. But it has great songs.

Was excited to get a Beatles album, but this didn’t wow me as much as some of their other stuff does. I enjoyed In My Life, Nowhere Man, and If I Needed Someone, but wasn't super impressed by everything else. Definitely not a bad album, but not my preference. The panning that they did on this album was wild. Listening on headphones is really unusual just by how extreme it is. Listening to this album on speakers is a much more enjoyable experience. This is good not great. We have 5 better Beatles albums to go, this one feels like filler. I’m sure this killed on Ed Sullivan but meh now. Michelle, in my life, and girl are good. Most songs are good, but not great.

I hadn't listened to this album since highschool and I only really remember liking 1 track off of it, so I invented a time machine just for this review to go back and ask myself. This is what I had to say "“In My Life” is probably my favorite track—super emotional and actually made me think about stuff." Awesome, thank you 16 year old me. Current me also really liked I'm looking through you but especially Wait, that song feels super ahead of its time. Like I know that the Beetles obviously shaped the zeitgeist and changed music forever but Wait could come out today and I think it could still be a hit, sounds super contemporary. Backloaded as fuck though, I was pretty meh on everything up until Girl. I've also never been a fan of the Beetles Sitar, always felt like a gimmick. 6/10

This is the tipping point, after which The Beatles (and rock/pop music) wouldn't ever be the same. Tight, folksy, clever and all the instruments sound great - though the hard pans grate a bit, as do the country/rockarolla/doowop departures. John is still my favourite. Another Beatles album!? What are the odds?? FWIW, Rubber Soul perfectly captures my relationship with the artist: it’s complicated. I remember exactly when and where I fell in love with Nowhere Man (8th grade, on the bus to Six Flags, universal site of rites of passage). In My Life remains irresistible, supernaturally invincible in the face of overplay. Whenever Drive My Car plays in the car in summer: no notes. And, also: I hate Norwegian Wood. Really hate it. You Won’t See Me, for some reason, personally offends. Michelle and Girl [*teeth-sucking sound*] are the two worst Beatles songs ever, thoroughly awful, and somehow both on here! Two incredible songs will usually tip the 4, but the whiplash has tired me. Which is the occupational hazard of unprecedented musical experimentation/the-Beatles-changed-everything-blah-blah-blah, I suppose.

I know this is almost blasphemy, but this was just the first album where the Beatles hinted at what they would achieve the following year. However, this album, touted as favourite by many, jIt just wasn't there yet, and too much variation in quality across the board made it difficult to see it as a coherent strong album.

It's difficult to judge this album without remembering that it's The Beatles and considering where they went after this. I'm going with 3 stars, as there's some really good tracks, there's a whole load that were just okay, and a few that were pretty lame. I love seeing the difference in Wikipedia between this album, with a literal essay about each track, and one that's a little bit more obscure, with a track listing and a "listed on 1001 albums" and that's about it.

"Nowhere Man" and "In My Life" are two of my favorite Beatles songs, but this album doesn't really hit as a whole for me.

Well, obviously the Beatles are wonderful. Not sure if any of these songs are new to me, but to sit down and listen to the whole album straight through is a lovely experience. Lots of songs on this album have already wormed their way into my soul: Michelle, In My Life, Drive My Car. Also love that they threw so much poetry into this album. Not as amazing as their later stuff, but still great.

simple but nice. enjoyable sound. pleasant. most certainly likeable. lyrics can be meh. Everything has to rhyme. Interesting to think that today, artists are getting a lot of flack for the trend of short 2-something minute songs, as well as short albums. However, this beloved Beatles album is almost entirely comprised of 2-something minute songs and the run time is just a bit over 30min. Best tunes: norwegian wood, you won't see me, in my life. If i needed someone is my favorite.

I liked some songs

You know what, I was dreading having to listen to them again- but this wasn't too bad. A few songs I actually liked, namely "In my life" and "Drive my car". Some of the album was a bit samey, but it wasn't all that long so there was nothing intolerable for me this time. All in all a more calm and folkier vibe. I know nothing about the Beatles or the timeline of these albums but I can only assume this was made before John "Is he pointing that thing at me?" Lennon introduced the rest of the band to acid and speed, and started making musical horseshit. A respectable 3 stars.

Beatles are great a little at a time.. and yes they are one of the greatest of all time- but too whimsical for me. This is the first album I believe is not better listened to end to end. 3 stars because independently most of the songs are good

Il y a des disques comme ça, des vaches sacrées, des monolithes intouchables qu'il est de bon ton de qualifier de "tournant" ou "d'album de la maturité". "Rubber Soul" est le premier sur la liste quand on parle des Beatles. Le disque qui, nous dit-on, a fait passer quatre garçons dans le vent du statut de faiseurs de tubes pour midinettes à celui d'Artistes avec un grand A. Le moment où ils ont rangé les costards sans col pour enfiler des pulls à col roulé et des regards profonds. Le grand saut dans l'âge adulte de la pop. Eh bien, laissez-moi vous dire un truc, moi, du haut de mes 55 balais et des milliers de fois où j'ai entendu, vendu, disséqué ce disque : "l'album de la maturité", mon cul. "Rubber Soul", c'est l'album de la crise d'adolescence. Et comme toute crise d'ado, c'est pétri de fulgurances géniales et de moments d'une maladresse confondante. Remettons-nous dans le contexte, décembre 1965, Les Fab Four sortent de la tornade "Help!", un disque brillant qui était l'apogée de leur première période, une collection parfaite de pop songs ciselées comme des diamants. Ils sont les rois du monde, et comme tous les rois qui s'emmerdent sur leur trône, ils ont envie d'aller voir ailleurs. Et "ailleurs", à l'époque, ça s'appelle Bob Dylan, ça s'appelle les Byrds, ça s'appelle la folk américaine qui commence à s'électrifier. Alors, nos quatre garçons de Liverpool, fines oreilles et éponges à influences, se mettent à écouter attentivement. Le résultat, c'est "Rubber Soul", et il faut lui reconnaître ça, la rupture est nette. Fini les "Yeah, yeah, yeah", bonjour les introspections, les textes un peu plus sombres, et surtout, les expérimentations sonores. C'est vrai, c'est la première fois qu'on entend un sitar sur un disque de pop occidentale avec le désormais légendaire "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)". George Harrison, jusqu'ici le guitariste doué mais discret, ramène un souvenir de ses voyages intérieurs et, d'un coup, ouvre une porte vers un autre monde. C'est aussi la première fois qu'on entend cette fameuse pédale fuzz sur une ligne de basse, sur le très bon "Think For Yourself", donnant une acidité, une méchanceté nouvelle à leur son. Et puis, il y a les chansons, des putains de chansons. "In My Life", avec son interlude de piano baroque (joué par George Martin mais accéléré pour sonner comme un clavecin), est peut-être l'une des plus belles choses que Lennon ait jamais écrites. "Michelle", la bluette en français de McCartney, est d'une efficacité redoutable, même si elle a depuis été massacrée par toutes les radios "nostalgie" du globe. "Norwegian Wood" est un chef-d'oeuvre de narration ambiguë et de mélodie entêtante. Oui, sur le papier, tout est là. Alors, pourquoi ce 3 sur 5 assassin ? Pourquoi cette moue dédaigneuse devant ce que beaucoup considèrent comme le Saint-Graal ? Parce que cet album a le cul entre deux chaises. Il n'a plus l'insolence et la perfection pop de ses prédécesseurs, et il n'a pas encore la folie créatrice et l'audace psychédélique de ses successeurs. C'est un album de transition, et comme toutes les transitions, il est un peu bancal. Pour chaque coup de génie, il y a un titre qui sonne comme un devoir d'écolier appliqué. "What Goes On" ? Un Ringo-bashing à peine déguisé, un morceau de remplissage qu'on aurait pu trouver sur une face B. "Run for Your Life" ? Lennon en mode macho menaçant, avec des paroles d'une misogynie qui fait grincer des dents aujourd'hui. On est loin, très loin, de la "maturité". Et puis, il y a le son. Ça va faire hurler les puristes, mais je trouve la production terriblement proprette, presque timide. On sent qu'ils testent des trucs, mais sans oser pousser les potards à fond. Ça manque de couilles, tout simplement. On est en 1965, de l'autre côté de l'Atlantique, Phil Spector construit des murs du son et Brian Wilson commence à bâtir sa cathédrale sonique avec "Pet Sounds". À côté, "Rubber Soul" sonne parfois un peu comme une maquette de luxe. Dans ma boutique de disques, c'était toujours le même débat. Les jeunes découvraient les Beatles et demandaient : "Je prends lequel après les best-of ?". Les connaisseurs leur disaient de prendre "Rubber Soul". Moi, je leur disais : "Prenez "Revolver" car il faut le reconnaitre c'est sur Revolver que la claque arrive vraiment. "Rubber Soul", c'est l'échauffement, c'est l'album où ils se sont regardés dans le miroir et se sont dit : "Bon, les gars, on arrête les conneries, on va essayer de faire de l'Art". Le problème, c'est que l'Art, parfois, c'est un peu chiant. La véritable révolution, le moment où ils ont tout fait exploser, ce n'est pas ici. Ici, ils posent les fondations, ils expérimentent, ils se cherchent. C'est une étape cruciale, un passage obligé, mais ce n'est pas la destination finale. C'est un disque fondamentalement important pour l'histoire de la musique, personne ne peut le nier. Il a ouvert la voie à "Revolver", "Sgt. Pepper" et tout le reste. Mais un album important n'est pas forcément un grand album de bout en bout et "Rubber Soul" a ses faiblesses, ses moments où l'on sent le groupe hésiter, se tâter. Ce n'est pas de la maturité, c'est de l'expérimentation et l'expérimentation, par définition, ce n'est pas toujours réussi.

Not exactly a Beatles fan to begin with, but I found this album tolerable. Some pretty decent songs on it

Highlights are 'Drive My Car' and 'In My Life' but I'm always more struck by the middle road-ness of the other songs. Nice harmonies and occasionally interesting guitar parts (I'm looking through you). Inoffensive, nice but just alright. My issue with listening to The Beatles is that having a modern reference point removes the original context that made them so groundbreaking. So now, I just hear twee pop songs. That said, the attitude that everything they produced was an instant classic is hyperbole at best. Even The Beatles had filler tracks and Rubber Soul is no exception. It's a nice listen (apart from Run For Your Life, WTF?) but nothing more, to me.

This is one of the greatest albums ever?? It's okay, but it's nothing to rave about. It doesn't display much depth or variance, and I didn't hear anything above average, save for 'In My Life'. Everything else sounded like a repeat of the other, which is typical Beatles soft rock song. I liked the sadder sounding songs, but I think there were maybe 2 of them, and I only liked them for being different. I feel like the Beatles had much better works of art.

That scratchy early Beatles is something that sits in my mind as something to scorn. It's not proper rock, it's not proper roll, and it is not the music that connects me with events or occasions with meaning. It's just music from before my time and an early version of their greatness. It's still great, but not an album to return to. 3 stars.

It's a good album but not a great album! Several outstanding tracks (Girl, Run for your life, Michelle) but a lot of ho hum and MUCH too much Ringo. John Lennon's misogynistic streak really shows through on this album too.

Wow, it's been almost 300 albums since I've had anything by The Beatles. My last album of theirs to review was Sgt. Pepper's at number 298, and here I am on the cusp of 600. I don't think I've ever listened to this album from start to finish before, but I'm familiar with a few songs on here. I remember my professor for history of rock and roll spending a lot of time talking about this album and its influences, so I'm excited to jump into this. I went into this album with really high hopes. Rubber Soul is regarded as a turning point in The Beatles’ career; a moment when they really began to push the boundaries of what pop music and mainstream rock and roll could be. I can see how this album earned that reputation, but to me, it’s just a good pop and rock record. Rubber Soul still has plenty of the building blocks that The Beatles are known for: great guitar playing, tight drumming, excellent vocal harmonies, and George Martin’s fantastic production work. For a splash of new, there’s sitar playing on several songs, an excellent harpsichord part on the fantastic “In My Life,” and fuzzy bass lines. There’s nothing on this album that really stands out as a single, and while that shows how the band put the same attention and dedication into every song, the end result is something that can be a tad bland sometimes. I wasn’t wowed by the songwriting on this album, and it feels that the band took themselves too seriously on this effort. The French singing on Michelle came across as pretentious, and other than the goofy “Drive My Car”, Rubber Soul just wasn’t that fun. I appreciate what Rubber Soul means to The Beatles’ career and popular music, but I wasn’t wowed by it.

Appreciate it but don't know if it will be in my regular rotation. Lot of the songs sound similar and arrangements/lyrics within are repetitive. Michelle might get an add to liked songs.

Drug free Beatles??? I hate the chorus of this song so dearly. Starting off weak, but the verses are alright. Interesting to get so many eras of the Beatles. Let’s see how this progresses Hmm maybe there is some mild drug shenanigans afoot. Sitars??? This song is far nicer and has a lovely sound/melody. I’m noticing it hard to write about the Beatles two days in a row. Meh. This song was fine. It’s interesting to see that the songwriting has progressed far beyond this in the subsequent albums. This song is schmaltzy and mid. Oooh la la las unnecessary and hackneyed even for the time. Nowhere man is a hit that somehow appeals. The listless (in a cool way) vocal line is great, but NO. Not back to the doo woo backup vocals. There is a pedestrian-ness to this album. No abbey road pun intended. The songs chug along and hit the ear as fine. They’re serviceable if not a little boring. Hard listen after more experimental work from the same artist. What can I say??? Man, it’s fine. Nothing on the comical edge. Kinda funky and fun but ultimately forgettable and basic. Nothing particularly groundbreaking. I seem to prefer the slower moments here as they are more interesting but again this kind of falls from an eerie piano sequence into fairly basic song tropes. Lyrics are bunk. He loves you. And I’m here also listening to this for some reason👍🏻. Hopefully the emoji doesn’t crash the site. Bluegrass???? Country??? Man. Influences on the sleeve. Not the best country I’ve heard but the lyrics and tone is better. This song was whiny and infuriating. Big pass. Looking through you is SICK. The bursts of energy with the distorted guitar. The lyrics are interesting, the vocal hook is sweet and not annoying. This is probably the best song so far. In my life eh? Another huge hit that I’ve heard a million times. If “cottagecore” hadn’t already been a term, this song feels like a song that would be blaring out to inebriated cottagers near the end of a sun baked day. Harpsichord solo DOES go hard. But overall, meh. Wait is pretty nice. I don’t know if they’re getting more interesting or I’m just getting worn down. Seemingly better songwriters as it gets near the end. And back to basics. Not in a great way. I’ll tell ya, if I needed someone, I’d call the beach boys. I kid. This is fine. Murdering little girl anthem to end it off. Although it sounds like he is in some sort of relationship with said little girl. Cringe lyrics aside, the guitar is nice, the vocal line is cool as all hell. This is a nice end for the most part. The “little girl” stuff is a sign of the times and overall painful to hear. Experimentation lacking here in general but that’s to be expected. Still some nice pop/rock songs on here. Decent album and experience. HOGHLIGHTS: Norwegian Wood (This Bird has Flown), Nowhere Man, I’m Looking Through You.

I'm not much of a Beatles fan, I like a few of their songs here and there. This album just doesn't do it for me. Didn't hate though. Solid 3.

Personally, is one of the weak Beatles album, like 2 or 3 songs stand out for me.

As far as Beatles records go, this one is pretty good. Some classic songs that I love are included: Norwegian Wood, In My Life, Nowhere Man, Michelle, and Drive my Car. That is 1/3 of the songs. The rest of the songs are just Ok. Not their best and not their worst. The Beatles were a hit machine.

I know this is considered a pivotal moment in Beatles history, and therefore rock history, but I just can't get into anything but their hits. A reluctant but honest three stars.

20240822 The Beatles – Rubber Soul 3.5/5 Again, an album I have revealed on my last project. As I'm still kind of busy I'm going to copy the review I did then (although it is not very good). "I’m a fan of the late era of The Beatles, and Rubber Soul starts to develop their change into a more experimental and rich sound. Their past as an early 60’s pop boyband is still present, and that makes this album worse in my taste. I think that it also flawed for having too many songs, many of them quite similar to each other. On the final songs the listening become tiring. But it’s still a Beatles album, and it’s very good. Drive My Car --> 4/5 One of the iconic Beatle songs when I think of them and their more catchy early music. Great pop/commercial song in general. Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) --> 5/5 The Beatles + a sitar = Love. One of the first songs where The Beatles are able to experiment and include different sounds in their music. You Won’t See Me --> 2.5/5 First sign of the first era of the band. It’s okey, but nothing I like too much. Nowhere Man --> 2/5 Again, a song that could perfectly fit into their previous era. Even less remarkable than You Won’t See Me. Think For Yourself -->2/5 The same as Nowhere Man. The World --> 1.5/5 The same, but I like this song even less. I’m not a big fan of the vocals here. Michelle --> 4.5/5 Very sappy song, but very well executed and catchy. What Goes On --> 3/5 Again, first Beatles era sound. This time, the rhythm of the song and its guitar make it more likeable for me. Girl --> 5/5 The music from the movie “Across the Universe” makes me love this song for some reason. I think the film made me discover some Beatle songs I had never listened before and created a special link. I’m Looking Through You --> 4/5 early era Beatles song, but I like this one. In My Life --> 5/5 One of the best Beatles songs of all their carer, maybe not one of my most favourites. There is something they transmit with this song that is very special, both musically and in the lyrics. And I love the piano-harpsichord solo. Wait --> 3/5 This is the point of the album where I want it to end. Nothing special in my opinion. If I needed Someone --> 3.5/5 Again, nothing special. But I like this song a little bit more. Run For Your Life --> 2.5/5 Here I’m just a bit tired. Again, an old-sounding Beatles song, doesn’t add too much."

Albumi #15, 11.08.2024 Beatlesin kuudes albumi ei ole itselleni tunnetuimmasta päästä. Oikeastaan levyltä tuttuja kappaleita olivat vain "Drive My Car", "Norwegian Wood" ja "Michelle". Beatlesin keskivaiheen merkkiteos on ihan ok levy, mutta ei yllä omalla asteikollani heidän top-5 levyihin.

This album marks the Beatles' move toward more sophisticated songs and experimentation — they'd been hanging out with Bob Dylan, they'd started getting more into drugs, and George was getting into his Eastern philosophy phase. There's a lot of good stuff here. At my count, 6 of the 14 songs were #1 hits. The good: "In My Life" is one of my favorite Beatles songs of all time. And "Nowhere Man" is also up there. "Think For Yourself" is also a highlight of the album, and marks the emergence of my favorite Beatle, George, as a songwriter. There's a lot of variety in terms of music style, although a few of the songs do sound similar. The bad: Oof, a lot of these lyrics have not aged well (really, they should've always been seen as gross, but...). "You Won't See Me," which is apparently about Paul's actress girlfriend not making time for him, comes off as a creepy stalker song. "If I Needed Someone" is a weird way to profess your love for your fiancee — I'm totally not going to sleep with you other girls anymore ... but leave your numbers, just in case (bad, George!). But "Run For Your Life" is just straight up awful with zero redeeming qualities. I can't believe anyone thought that song was a good idea. Knowing John's history with women, there's nothing tongue in cheek about it. It's just bad. 3/5 — probably more of a 3.5. When it's good, it's really good. But when it's bad, it's yikes.

This is an album. The people that said every song is memorable are delusional, because this album kind of blended into a half hour of British dudes. I get the influence, but with 60 years of influenced music after there's better stuff out there.

Exactly what you need if you want to listen to the Beatles. Not my all time favorite album of theirs but still great and I love in my life so happy to hear it anytime!

Fav: In My Life Least Fav: What Goes On

This landed better with me than most Beatles albums, but not by much. The goofy opener of “Drove My Car” had us starting off on the wrong foot, but Norwegian Wood brought me back. Ultimately found myself liking some of the tracks, like “Girl” and “In my life” has always been one of my favorite Beatles songs.

They didn't do it best, but they did do it first. I suppose that's worth at least three stars.

Just because I know there are more Beatles albums coming that I like better, I will give this a 3 for average

This is one of heir more lighthearted albums imo, one of my favorite songs Michele is on here as well. Goes well with everything, it’s the vanilla of Beetle albums. 3.4

Not a huge full album Beatles guy. Hard Days Night or Revolver would be my usual choices. (Of course there’s a ton of good singles too) Northern Soul, US R&B, a little hint of psychedelic music all blended together makes a pleasant album but ultimately not an overall “holy shit” amazing album. Felt like there were more filler tracks with this listen. You can hear where this is ultimately heading with Revolver coming up. And then it’s downhill to the end (in my opinion!) Stand out tracks for me - Wait, The Word, Drive My Car and Norwegian Wood

Supposedly this album marks the point which The Beatles transitioned from bubbly pop to start their most well-received experimental music. Well, to me, this is still quite bubbly in most parts. Not that that’s a negative thing, it’s just a bit too chirpy to make up anything that great. It can’t be doubted that they’re the masters of short and snappy pop numbers. In that regard, it’s excellent. In the regard of most other things musical, it’s considerably less excellent, though still enjoyable.

I like the Beatles. I'm not one of those crazy Beatles fans that can tell you everything about every album and who their barber was during the recording sessions. I think the Beatles persona sort of transcended the music they made and it's hard to listen to it objectively. Like, it's the Beatles - you're just supposed to love it, right? That said, I feel like this album is sort of hit and miss. This record seems like it was the prelude to the Beatles getting weird (super high) and I like their weird stuff a lot better. This album is good, but if I was going to make a 'best of' compilation of the Beatles, I don't know that anything from this record would be included. 3/5

This is a pretty good Beatles album. Very transitional, they are playing around with what being "The Beatles" means and what types of songs they write. I like the experiment for the most part.

2.5 My first Beatles! Honestly, the songs here are quite unremarkable, apart from "run for your life", which was enjoyable enough to push it to 3 stars. But at least i finally found a way to block the ads on spotify, so a win for music nevertheless!

This was not an insufferable Beatles album. I love the brevity, and I wish more bands would adopt this. An interesting mix of styles overall, and I really like the vocal/writing structure of this album. The line cadence and rhyming work really well throughout the album. Bonus points for sitar usage. Have already heard all of these songs thanks to my dad playing nonstop Beatles for my entire childhood. My rating will be biased as we are a Beatles household. Big fan of Michelle due to sentimental value - dad used to sing it to my sister (her name is Michelle). Run for your life is a weird song. 3.5 rating for the album cuz it’s a bit slow for my liking however that doesn’t seem to be an option on this app? Probably one of their worst albums in my opinion. Wouldn’t be something I’d listen to casually but still enjoyed it. If I rated it any lower I’d be afraid my dad would find out and disown me.

Some good tracks on here such as "In my Life" and "Nowhere Man" but a lot of it is mediocre and unmemorable. I like the Beatles but they definitely have better albums worth listening to before you die – "Let It Be", for example.

This might be one of my least favorite Beatles albums. It's pretty straight forward. There's a lot of things they did that I don't particularly like: a lot of 'oooohs, and la-la's' that I find kind of annoying. Norwegian Wood and In My Life are highlights of the record. Some would say Drive My Car to being one of the better songs... I personally think it's my least favorite song on the album. But who am I?

BL: First Beatles album I’ve got on this list. Listened Before, I liked this one a lot, I think it marks the most interesting point in The Beatles career, the point of no return where they went to a fully psychedelic band. Will be happy to give this one a relisten AL: while this record does struggle with its identity a little bit (combining some incredibly psychedelic cuts like “Norwegian Wood”, and incredibly standard early 60s Beatle-pop like “Run for your life”). The record generally maintains posture and has some incredibly compelling moments. Though overall this was the awkward puberty phase of The Beatles and while it is a good listen it doesn’t compare anywhere near to some of the later efforts in “Revolver” or “The White Album” FT: “Norwegian Wood”, “Nowhere Man”, “In My Life” 3/5

Not a big Beatles fan, but it helped they day go by

This was a decent album full of tracks I mostly never heard before. I likely won't listen to it again, however compared to many of the two star albums I've listened to as part of this project so far, I'm far more likely to listen to this than to them.

Still there are some of my all time favourite songs on this. “Norwegian Wood,” “Nowhere Man,” and “In My Life” are my personal high spots on the album. 3.5/5

Still don't get this album. The songs are repetitive and only ever consist of a couple 4 or 8 bar sections. Its a rigid record, one that feels robotic at times, which is a shame because this is supposed to the first truly human Beatles album. Naturally, the melodies and production are immaculate, but I still would consider this (like the album before and after) a transitional record, but one crucial in the band later making some of the greatest of all time.

This is….cute. The vibe is fun. I wasn’t alive yet, but I know the Beatles were a BIG deal. I can see it. This album is giving teeny-bopper music

I remember at one time enjoying this album more than I did today. It sort of feels like a collection of songs from an era, not really a cohesive album. The music is generally good, if a bit bland compared to later Beatles. But I think, as an album, I could live without it.

2.8/5. Good ol' jazz-sy vibes with soft vocals coming together to make a timeless classic. While I amy have found some songs to be alright, the last few songs were good. Fav will definitely be the bery last song

I quite liked the album. Might listen to again, and a couple of tracks really slap.

C'était agréable à l'écoute mais pas du même niveau que les deux précédents albums. Les chansons se ressemblaient un peu trop les unes les autres notamment. Disons 3 tirant vers le 4.

idk i don't get the Beatles, maybe Abbey Road, Revolver, White album, can change my mind. I'm sure their sound was unique for the time but I can't shake the feeling that their legendary body of work inspired enough people to the point where their legacy is muddled by equally classic works by the next generation of artists.

Some of the criticisms I have for With The Beatles apply here as well. All of the songs have the same theme of love / breakups. This could work, if the lyrics weren’t very cliche / the same. Most of the lyrics here aren’t the best lyrics the Beatles have written by a mile. Most of the songs are a bit forgettable, but the ones that aren’t stick very well. It’s good at best, a tad annoying and cliche at worst.

I went through a pretty big Beatles phase as a teenager. I owned almost all of their albums. But I never bought Rubber Soul. I don’t think I had ever actually listened to the entire album. Now that I have, I stand by my decision not to purchase this record. There is just nothing exciting about it.

It's alright. Norwegian Woods is really good. There are better Beatles albums tbh. I'm feeling a solid 6

Ondanks veel goede nummers, nog net iets te veel pop Beatles om heel het album steeds op te zetten. Beetje meer drugs pakken jongens.

It was fine. I know I should love the Beatles but I can see why they're important but really can't enjoy them very much. A couple songs in here I can listen to endlessly but I wanted to skip most of them. I wish I got them but I don't.

The Beatles are just fine in my opinion. I think the album is fine but just heard way too many times. I will give the album three stars.

I really don't like the Beatles and can scarcely recommend their music, but it wasn't as intolerable as I've come to 'want' to expect when listening to them. For me, just average.

Jeetje, we worden wel verwend hoor. Na Pink Floyd en Radiohead nu de Beatles! Het album begint naar mijn mening sterk met Drive my Car, met de geniale Beep beep outro. Norwegian Wood ken ik ook nog, tot mijn eigen verbazing en luisterd ook lekker weg. Michelle herken ik ook van een ander nummer. Sowieso valt het me nu pas op hoeveel invloeden van The Beatles in bijvoorbeeld hiphop zitten. Heel erg nice. Ik speel een soort van het "Herken het sampletje" wat erg bijdraagt aan hoe ik het album luister. Voorbeeld: Michelle word gesampled in Navajo van Masego. Ohja, dit album verder? Eh het is prima, niet fantastisch en een beetje zoals ik The Beatles ken. Denk dat ik het 3 sterren geef - Prima. FAVO: Drive my car, Michelle

Not the best not the worst, I like a few of the tracks and found others boring. The production is a bit strained in places too.

It’s fine. Drive My Car is a classic. Run For Your Life hasn’t aged well. Just not a big Beatles fan.

3/5. A lot of people say this is their favorite Beatles album and it’s hard to believe they listened to any of the later Beatles albums. Some songs in the middle and the last few songs are not classics. There are definitely some great ones here like In My Life and Norwegian Wood, but some not great ones like The Word and Wait. It’s still good but I don’t think I’d put this on over most other Beatles albums.

Good album with many good songs (some I don't remember hearing before) with usual Beatle's harmonies. Sound ranges from their early work but with hints of what was to come in late 60s

Well... crap. In general, I don't like the Beatles. But this was good. Breaking down some walls. I kinda wish I could give it a 3.5. But we round down!

Fun album. Sounds like the Beatles although there aren't that many recognizable tracks for me. Weird song about killing a girl that doesn't want to be with him... oddly dark
