Reviews (page 9 of 10)
I didn't really get into the album saddly.
Boring boomer rock that doesn't bring anything to the table. How is Hotel California not enough for this list?
"Hotel California" or "One Of These Nights", these are the only 2 albums that would have been great for this list. The first Eagles sounds like a parody of boomer-dads-rock.
Soulless
At one point in my life, I considered myself a fan of the Eagles. Because of this list and hearing a few of their albums, cover to cover, I'm questioning whether I truly listened back in the day. First, I didn't really hear any rock, so this is just a country album. Outside of the 2 radio tunes, Take It Easy and Peaceful Easy Feeling, everything else is extremely mediocre. Something about the Witchy Woman song annoys the hell out of me. Everything else was just OK. Not terrible, but certainly not something I would seek to play outside of this list. Way back, I tried to convince my Uncle Jeff the Eagles were a good band. He laughed and said I had a lot to learn about music. Yes, Jeff, they really aren't very good. BUT, they do have some songs I really like. Just none of those songs are on this album. 2
2.5 Before starting this list, I had never realized how much of a country group the Eagles actually are given that the majority of their hits skew more in a rock direction, but the country influence here is felt heavily, resulting in an album that Wikipedia classifies, appropriately, as “country rock”. Unfortunately, as is the case with just about everything else I’ve heard from the Eagles, it doesn’t result in particularly interesting music - it lacks both the edge of rock and the storytelling of country, leaving you with a lot of really bland, unmemorable songwriting. Just like Hotel California, this album kicks off with an actually pretty solid track from the group, Take It Easy in this instance, and then proceeds to never do anything interesting ever again. I’m pretty sure Witchy Woman and Peaceful Easy Feeling were both pretty big hits as well, but they didn’t do a thing for me here. Honestly, the only two tracks that really stuck out to me at all after the opener were Earlybird because of its annoying bird noises and Most of Us Are Sad for its cheese - though it’s certainly relatable living in 2025 America. Supposedly the producer of this album, who had previously worked with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Led Zeppelin, initially turned down the group after hearing them, only changing his mind after they worked on their harmonies, which is an energy I can certainly get behind. I have no idea how these guys made it so big and even less of an idea how their Greatest Hits album became the third-best selling ever, especially considering three of its ten songs came from this and there’s no Hotel California. I mean, it’s certainly not bad music, but it’s not my cup of tea.
Jeg kan simpelthen ikke lide Eagles, lærer jeg af den her bog. Meget kedeligt album
Kedeligt men lød godt langt hen ad vejen
It's okay. The hits are pretty good, especially Peaceful Easy Feeling. The rest is pretty bland, even for album filler.
Es geht gut los. Aber das wars dann auch. Ich vermute, die Eagles haben bessere Alben seitdem gemacht.
I am indifferent towards this album.
EI paljoa parempi ja subjektiivinen review tällä kertaa… Aikaakselistolla kun eletään niin voi tietää kaikkea informaatiota ja kontekstia… Vain yksi entiteetti aika-akseliston yläpuolella..
I rate Take It Easy a 2 star because I don't really like country music and its not for me ⭐⭐. I rate Witchy Women a 2 star because I don't really like country music and its not for me ⭐⭐. I rate Peaceful Easy Felling 2 star because I don't really like country music and its not for me ⭐⭐.
I like the music cause I feel like its a summery vibe so a 3 the second one I dont really like so a 2 the third one I don't really like
Shout out the dude
Unfortunately I am not driving down the North American West Coast in my convertible, so I’m not really enjoying this record all that much… But if I were driving down that coast, this is what I would put on. Take it Easy, Earlybird and Tryin’ are really good songs. Chug All Night belongs on all juleboxes on the sleazy bars on that drive
I quite enjoy some songs by the Eagles, however this album left my wanting as I was thoroughly unimpressed by all but the most well known songs featuring here.
Boring with all the songs sounding the same
That was dull, I don't think I want to listen to it again, willingly I mean
Who makes this fucking list?!
This pre-Hotel California Eagles is my favorite kind of Eagles - when the focus was more towards performing country-rock with tight harmonies and not towards kicking each others asses. From everything I’ve read about them, Glenn Frey seems like the biggest dickhead to ever walk the planet. I like the story of founding member Bernie Leadon quitting the band by pouring a beer on Glenn’s head. As for this album, the 3 songs that are already radio staples are the best songs, with the deep cuts ranging from adequate to stoinkers. Everything would sound better if the Screaming Man Chorus was yelling along the whole time. The fucking Eagles definitely had some chemistry though. Their version of “Take It Easy” is infinitely more enjoyable than the song’s co-writer Jackson Browne’s version.
I know it’s fashionable to hate on the Eagles, but there’s not really much to hate. The production is too slick and the band members are twats, but that could be said about any number of 70s artists full of cocaine. This is still pretty good music, and the fusion of country music with LA sheen was probably pretty novel and exciting at the time. There are a couple of stone cold classics on this record and a bunch of serviceable rock. Good enough for a summer day, but lemme choose the tracks for a good listen.
I had a good night, but the eagles still do suck.
Jesus Chug All Night took this down an entire star what the fuck was that. Take it Easy being written by a totally different guy not in the band makes so much sense because it’s MILES better than the rest of the album.
Witchy Woman saves this from absolute scorn
It shocks me that a band can write absolute classics like Take It Easy and Witchy Woman, and on the same album also write absolute garbage like Chug All Night, Most of Us Are Sad, and Earlybird. The lyrics in Most of Us Are Sad are unforgivable. Even the last single, Peaceful Easy Feeling is pretty mediocre. I almost was super generous and about to give it a 3 purely on the backs of the first two songs, but yeesh Earlybird. The sampled bird noises and the banjo are awful. I never understood the hate for the Eagles, but that was before I heard their non-singles. I get it now.
yawnnnnnn
This ain't it. It's so adequate that it's essentially no good. And we already have an excellent country/roots rock act from California (see Creedence). This isn't that mastery, or close to it. 'Most of us are sad / No one let's it show' is about as good as it gets. At least that has a sincerity to boot, not an inauthenticity to bear. But truthfully, this album has no haunting power, and no quiet successes. An all-around blah.
Well I was gonna make a reference to the Dude getting tossed from that cab, until I saw that basically EVERYONE made that reference. And rightly so. Far from my fave band and there’s no chance this is the last we hear from these soft ass country rockers, sadly.
Tässä on häiritsevää pehmeyttä, jota ei ole kompensoitu erityisen hyvillä kappaleilla. Parhaimmillaan perinteisimmän kantreimmillaan. Heikoin: Earlybird...
It’s ok, just so beige. Hated the birdie tweeting business and I’m not planning any chug based action anyday soon by the way.
More beige than my teddy bear. Paint by numbers rock. I think you get it
Kind of boring.
I'm with the Dude on the merits of The Eagles but this was better than I expected and I enjoyed the banjo on some of the tracks.
Got a little samey in places
Its fine I guess. Worse than Hotel California. Still the definition of 'meh'.
I'm afraid I'm with The Dude on this one.
Honestly, I don't really get the Eagles thing. It's not bad but it's not something I ever really want to listen to.
It's Decent
It’s whatever, 70s rock… the singles/hits are fine.
hef aldrei fílað ernina. mjúkt köntrí sem ég kann ekki við og svo eru auðvitað áhrif frá keilaranum mikla.
Boomer rock. Let the Eagles die already.
I really wanted to give the eagles a chance, but this album was disappointing even with low expectations. The musicianship and instrumentals were laughably basic at most points, and the songs were mostly forgettable. The lyrics were the worst part, cheesy and cringe, especially when talking about women. "Chug All Night" and "Most of Us Are Sad" were the clear low points. The some of the songs did have a pleasant vibe when I turned out the lyrics. 2/5
Fuckin' Eagles, man
Crazy that this is a debut album. But as the Dude says, "Fuck the fucking Eagles, man."
Fine vokalharmonier og bra miksa, men det er så platt musikk og så hjernedøde tekster at jeg må skru hjernen ganske mye av får å nyte noe som helst i det. Favoritt: Train leaves here this morning
Hmm I don’t really k ow what to say to this record. It had some good songs but I am not convinced that it’s a really good record you must listen to before you die.
It's fascinating they are more a country rock band and a lot more stripped down then the album I know -hotel California. I think I can actually hate this and not be so conflicted. Just general 70's rock. Can't stand who they are and who likes them so I'm ok giving them a lower score.
boring album
Fine but muh
Meh
One or two good tracks but overall pretty mediocre - 'easy listening' at best. Nothing like as good as Hotel California (the album).
can i get something good now
Thought this would be interesting… I like a lot of music that is unmistakeably either influenced by, or an influence on, Eagles. Who are a band I instinctively dislike. But I thought I should give the album a go, as I’ve not heard it before. It turns out… I like them even less than I thought. Horrible lyrics, ponderous tunes. I maintain that it is American road music that sounds better on a European road trip than an American one. If you don’t have any better albums…
Was pretty mid honestly. Take it Easy is a banger but the rest disappointed. Oh also I hate the f'kin' eagles, man.
Very polished but very boring. Take it Easy is good.
“I hate the fuckin’ eagles, man!’ I used to kind of like the eagles until I saw the big Lebowski. It had never occurred to me to hate them until I heard lebowski’s opinion. Since then, all I hear is brainless, soulless schlock where I used to hear anodyne but well-made pop rock. I guess I’m saying this is sort of an arbitrary reaction - but when I tried to give this album a fair shot, I couldn’t tune out the lebowski in my head, and so turned it off halfway through the truly execrable ‘chug all night’
Teleurstellend saai
American country shite
I guess the opening track was okay 3/10 Fav tracks - none Least Fav - n/a
“I hate the fuckin’ Eagles, man!” Okay, that’s not quite true—I don’t necessarily LIKE them, but I can begrudgingly acknowledge the part they played in shaping country rock.
Really boring. No songs registered with me at all except the one I already knew from that one Seinfeld episode. I don't think we need to hear this one, Hotel California would suffice. Key tracks: Witchy Woman
So many Lebowski references in the reviews. Other than take it easy, the rest is very bland. Highlights: take it easy
Was somewhat looking forward to an Eagles album. That was until I found out they're not quite as revered as I thought they were. I just hope 'Hotel California' is better than this. 'Nightingale' is pretty good and 'Take the Devil' has a cool groove and riff in the middle of the track. Overall it's decent enough background music if you're into country rock, otherwise just a bit bland. Not anything too bad, just nothing that I particularly cared for. Just inoffensive, middle of the road, dad rock. Just meh.
Take it Easy is fun. The rest of the album is dreck.
Well, this debut album is strikingly well played. But I don't find it particularly engaging to listen to. It's rather too easy listening and smooth for my taste. Plus I don't like country rock. When I started buying albums, and before I formulated my own tastes, I had at least one Eagles album (Hotel California), but really it was nothing I could relate to in the mid to late 1970s. And I moved on from smooth easy listening country rock.
So bland I didn’t even notice it was playing in the background.
Starts off quite well with "Take It Easy" and "Witchy Woman" but then it peters out into bland, mostly unmemorable country rock. A bird gets trapped in the album midway through? "Don't let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy" is a pretty good line though.
Det är inte dåligt. Det är tråkigt. Extremt meningslös musik. Orkar knappt lyssna klart.
Country vibes meet the California sun in a way that’s supposed to give me some sorta peaceful, easy feeling, but mainly it just has me wishing for tunes that have something more going on. Nothing particularly offensive here, but nothing exciting either.
I never got the eagles. Their most famous song “hotel California” is tedious at best. In this album they’ve yet to achieve even that low.
It's no Hotel California, is it? Found this to be pretty drab and unremarkable country rock. Never actually offensive but just nothing reached out to me at all after a few listens.
No alarms, no surprises
Overplayed and always boring. 2 stars
Witchy Woman is okay. Everything else is either overplayed dreck or just dreck.
boring as hell maar classic 2/5
Clocking in at 37 minutes this is a mercifully brief record from the Eagles. Sounds like 9 minutes of 4-star music over the course of 2-star tedium.
Modern definition of MOR. Fine. Gentle. Became more sickly as it went on. This is ok. I never need to listen to it again. Was a single good lyric though; even if it was only so good taken into another context.
Come on
The kind of Dad rock I don't like.
2 great songs. A bunch of very mediocre songs. Kinda boring but not unpleasant.
First time listening to an Eagles album and I don't hate it as much as I thought I would.
Tasteless. Should've chosen between country and rock'n'roll after all
earlybird was fun but meh
One of the most overrated bands. This album is so boring.
There’s a couple of songs I like but not a big fan overall.
This record starts with my favorite Eagles song. Otherwise, I didn't really care for it surprisingly. Maybe they're just a greatest hits band for me but album wise they don't seem to have anything that strikes a chord/keeps my whole attention. Sorry dad.
Very slick country rock. What a surprise. Not a fan, it's very easy listening and not particularly full of fantastic tunes. Thankfully the weeping steel guitars are having a day off but finger plucked banjos are sadly in evidence.
Boring, disappointing, old. Couldn't make it all the way through. Eagles, before they learnt how to fly.
Started off great and proceeded to loose my interest quickly.
Maybe it's classic rock overload from the generator lately, but this didn't even really catch my attention once.
Aside from "Witchy Woman", the only thing this album does is make me love Gram Parsons all the more. Linda Ronstadt owes us an apology for foisting this monster douchebags on the world.
I'm not sure that I hate the fucking Eagles, man, but I certainly don't love them either. This was just boring.
I don't dislike the Eagles, but I always thought the sum was less than the individual parts if that makes sense. I think they're all very talented individuals in their own right and they created a recognizable sound, but it never seemed to make sense together. I'm also less of a fan of pre-Joe Walsh Eagles. This one has too much of Glenn Fry's country-western influence.
way too much country (rock) I was never a country fan and never will be. For me, country is what 'Schlager' is in Germany, simply unbearable. but no problem, because this is not the only album by the Eagles. They have grown significantly over time
ehhh
Uneven first album, although it's clear that Meisner is in a groove with the songs that did end up being popular. I also like Tryin'.
A commercial and super American rock album. Fucking hate it. He's aged like an apple (not so well).
Look it's considered to make fun of the Eagles just like El Duderino. And that makes sense, the Eagles suck. Take it easy has its time and place though.
3/10 Thanks, I've had enough 7-11-2024
well, this takes me back. not necessarily in a great way, just in the sense that i remember how i felt when i first heard this album. that's a good reminder of how subjective the experience of music really is, in that it can be so so hard to divorce our feelings about the music from the overarching, under-rumbling tones around us - they all stick to each other and sometimes you just have to come back years - or maybe years and years and years - later to see what was magic and what was just...there. either way, the bending harmonies in 'train leaves here' are cool. see also: amos lee's 'night train' where he does the same thing, and also right at the end of the song - https://open.spotify.com/track/2XzS4vuHyjZ3jBhn1slvU4 anyway, this one kinda misses me overall. first 2 tracks are, you know, fine. the girl my lord in a flatbed ford line has been randomly popping into my head for decades now, and it's definitely worth the time, but...man, i dunno. the rest of this album just loses my interest and never regains it. glenn frey's voice - very much a product of its time - just lacks the character of vocalists i really enjoy, and while don henley was how i learned sometimes drummers also sing while they play - which is def cool - that's about where my overall interest in any of them ends. in fact, this album was so boring, i didn't even notice joe walsh playing on it. (...that's a joke.)
A bit boring
I don't get this hate the album seems to be receiving here or on RYM. It's definitely not amazing either. It's a pretty ok but bland country rock record. Seems like a nice road trip soundtrack but nothing more than that. Maybe it shouldn't be on the list if it's just ok? On the other hand, it seems like Eagles were pretty important for the US music in the 70s so maybe that's justified, but I'm not sure, save for Hotel California, they were never really popular in my part of the world. It's a 2.5/5 for me because nothing really sticks after a couple of listens. I don't think I'll be coming back to it so I'm marking it as a 2.
I thought I only knew "Witchy Woman" until the first track started.
I’ve had a rough night, and I hate the fucking Eagles, man!
Eagles
Is this the point when folk-rock jumps the shark? Maybe. It's just so cheesy. Closer to John Denver than the Byrds, but with an odd amount of crunchy rock riffs thrown in. It's like they purposely lean in to all the worst parts of the music that inspired them. A harbinger of so much dreadful soft-rock and slick LA schlock to come along in the 70s.
Poor man's Beach Boys. And I hate the beach boys
Sleek and pleasant the whole way through. Most of the songs sound completely nondescript, but the tight harmonies and competent instrumentation keeps it chugging along. I'm sure the Eagles made better albums.
On a Friday, after being worn down by a long week, I really needed a pick me up. Some hardcore punk, dubstep or something. Instead I was greeted with easy listening. So I put it off until Saturday morning. Listening to this while being a bit hungover and sorry for myself was the right choice. There's some decent tracks on this album, and some stinkers.
i am not a fan of the eagles, so this was better than i thought it would be
Worlds most overrated band. 2/5
C'mon, man. I had a rough night & I fuckin' hate the Eagles, man!
Come on, man. I had a rough night and I hate the fuckin' Eagles, man!
Eagles
bring as hell
Please no, not the Eagles. One album on this list was enough. The Eagles are not an essential band and this is not an essential album. If classic rock radio didn’t overplay the shit out of Take It Easy and Peaceful Easy Feeling for the Margaritaville crowd, then no one would have remembered these guys. There are a few redeeming moments, but overall this is dollar bin fodder.
This is country. I don't like it.
2.5 kinda boring
Best Song: Take It Easy. Recognizable, and lyrically it fits their woefully laidback style. Worst Song: Take the Devil. Why not just listen to some actual blues? The solos in here are so painfully slow and unemotional. Overall: I don't think I like the Eagles. I feel like the vocals lack the oomph necessary to pick up enough from the perpetually laidback style. Everything is too slow and sparse. There are far better bands from this era.
I hate the fuckin’ Eagles 4/10
Another one of it’s time. OK.
Distasteful though occasionally tuneful. It seems cliche at this point to hate The Eagles so I tried not to instantly write this off. Still not great though.
I love 70s rock, but man the Eagles are boring.
Aside from the three hits, the rest of it basically sucked
[you know the quote] I was pretty disheartened to see this was today's selection. I don't HATE this band, but for the amount of dads out there who thought they were the second coming of Christ, I just would like them to be a bit more...I dunno...entertaining? Mostly I'm just mad that my Spotify algorithm is gonna recommend more of this to me.
Boring debuts by boring bands get boring reviews.
Come on, man. I had a rough night and I hate the fuckin' Eagles, man!
Ugh, no, the dreaded Eagles. Never liked them and this just confirmed it. Bland is the word. Plus a guy I had a thing for once ghosted me by sending lyrics from Hotel California, so there’s that
4 / 10 Pop, folk, rock facilón muy flower-power. Como dicen en el Gran Lebowsky, Todo el mundo odia a los Eagles.
To quote The Big Liebowski "Fuck the Eagles"
a classic. not necessarily a good one but a classic! Its fine- easy enough to listen to and most of these songs I wouldn't necessarily bother to skip if they came on but nothing special really. I really hate take it easy though, its so overplayed and tedious to listen to. Overall it's actually pretty mid and boring yet super overhyped. Favourite: "witchy woman" skips: "take it easy", "take the devil"
Not a fan
I love classic rock. I know this is classic rock. The math ain’t mathin.
This isn't my least favorite Eagles album, but I still don't like the Eagles. I like the brevity, and there is some more rocking on this album than the boring schlock they turned into. I still wouldn't choose to listen to it, though.
no hotel californina on this album whats even the baka point this is the type of music that plays in a corny american film and gets switched off right before the bar fight kicks off. "boy I'm glad we got outta that one!" typa music. car fading into the distance on highway 51 typa music. gonna go listen to hotel california again though
This album has some variations of more bluesy and country songs. While the groovy bluesier ones spoke to me, and I also like some of the guitar parts, in overall it does not quite float my boat.
generic, innit
This album didn't have the peaks and valleys of energy I was looking for. It wasn't all that interesting, but it wasn't awful either. I'd say 2.5 stars.
i expected this to be worse with the amount everyone rags on the eagles
too much
This is full on beige - Take It Easy is a decent enough song, but not particularly memorable, but the rest of it really doesn't inspire much of anything. Perfectly pleasant to listen to in the most part (Chug All Night feels very weird and out of character for them), but it's pretty unambitious given how good their voices are. Should be doing a lot more (and did so with some later albums, much better than this).
This was about as boring as I expected it to be. Not bad, just boring. I almost forgot I was listing to it by the end. Take it Easy is objectively a great song though, so I can't justify a 1 star here.
My second eagle's album and I very nearly bounced off the list completely. A more country influenced eagle's album. Is it good? Yes. Is it boring? Uninspired? Absolutely. 3/10 Tap water has more flavour
gähn
Favourite Song: Take It Easy A light, simple album which is enjoyable but don't feel like it's doing anything special.
Imagine taking Steely Dan and making it suck. That’s the Eagles. Absolute snoozers throughout. Take It Easy is alright and is keeping this from getting a 1.
The guiltiest pleasure. There's something that deeply and essentially just sucks about this band, but if you suspend critical judgement and let the cheesy vibes wash over you it's possible to feel that easy feeling, like the warm fading rays of a desert sunset and the chill of an evening breeze. But the you notice how trite it is or remember what creeps they are and it jerks you back to the vacuous reality of sad 70s corporate rock.
The Dude was always right. I fucking hate the Eagles, man. This album has a couple tracks that keep this from being a single star, but I really hate most of this middling garbage.
Meaningless, bored, uninspired 70s yacht rock in my opinion. And I LIKED Hotel Calafornia. That album was at least iconic and sounded clean as a whistle. This album brings nothing to the table in terms of safe, bland soft rock and was, frankly, a pointless inclusion.
"...ohhhh....witchAYYY woman!" Great harmonizing, a lot of familiarity from growing up with (constant) play on the radio....I grew up hating them actually; am (hopefully) far more accepting of different styles now even if I don't enjoy country rock and putting aside the fact that Henley/Frey are/were grade A dicks. "Take It Easy" isn't a bad song at all, I've definitely hung on hating it for ages for no reason. "Most of Us Are Sad" - there's a multitude of jokes one could make around this; although even if the song truly is plodding there are some nice harmonies - as there are on most tunes here. Another album where the cover does match the music pretty well - if you're into sleeping out on the desert floor, rolling over into a cactus, and just looking out at the world - this is your album. Ehh...It's mostly fine [but "Chug All Night?" hahaha seriously how is this not worse than most trashy 80s popmetal throwaways] and I can absolutely see how people would love this, it's just ...there for me. Not much more. It does tug at those nostalgic strings and easily brings one back to the 70s. If one wishes for this particular time machine. I'd lean towards the Deep Purple/Stevie Wonder setting myself. 5/10 2 stars.
I’m feeling eh? Always thought the Eagles sounded like if you took every 70s rock band and averaged them out. Some interesting guitar flourishes here and there, just not feeling this as one of the 1001 best albums of all time ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I could never get into the Eagles. My opinion didn’t not change after listening to this album.
The Eagles are legendary, but this album leaves a lot to be desired.
The Eagles will really make one good song for every 10 bad or boring songs.
Mixing Country and Rock is like mixing beer and wine. While you might personally strongly prefer one over the other, individually the options are still respectable. However, when you mix them you get this unholy amalgamation of fermented bitter-sour, half bubbly hop-grape juice. Imagine the tase. That is what listening to this album feels like.
Pretty generic albu with the big hit...Take it Easy. Did nothing to enhance my opinion of The Eagles; which is and remains, why did these guys make it huge when dozens of other better bands remain obscure. (ie. Wilco) 2.5 stars
I found it a bit boring. But anything was better than the last album
Stupid eagles
A two for the familiarity of the songs from their best of. But, I’ve never really been a fan.
Pretty meh easy listening rock. Not something I'll go to again, found it bland and boring. I wouldn't say I hate the eagles but this did nothing to convince me to give them more of a listen
I hate the fucking Eagles man
Total respect for the Eagles. But, just tired of them and feels a bit boring.
Very easy listening…not for me!
what the other guy said
Kind of boring to be honest.
a few of good songs, some are a bit too whiny for my taste
I hate the eagles man. The Dude had some merit there. They were sorely overplayed on the radio and still are on classic rock stations. They're incredibly radio-friendly and smooth enough to appeal to at least some demographic that doesn't like music to be too abrasive. Basically anything that the Eagles can do, Steely Dan can do better. My only compliment is that sometimes when they lean into the country a bit more (Train Leaves Here This Morning). Otherwise it's the Eagles.
Take it Easy is a great opening track for a debut. The harmonising is pitch perfect. What follows is an odd mixture of songs. I had to check Spotify to make sure that it was still The Eagles streaming. What starts out as a classic 70's rock album fizzles out to become meh. I didn't now about the Glyn Johns connections with the production.
Putting on an Eagles record to listen to is so fucking embarrassing. Within the first few seconds you are just instantly re-assessing what you are doing with your life, and wondering if you've really lost it. The Eagles are cheesy as everyone knows, but this has some redeeming qualities in that it's a bit more straightforward rock than their later stuff. I'll give it that but not much else.
Öde. Zwei Sterne wegen Take it Easy und Earlybird.
The sheer blandness, which maybe sounded new in 1972, is hard to fathom 50 years on. This is watered down CSN at best, and even allowing for the soft-rock "revolution," it's worth remembering how many bands (including Americana acts) subsequently exceeded this by some fair distance. Sure, the playing is competent, which suggests maybe they shoulda never been any more than a studio band. Since it feels like a random collection of songs, assessing as such seems only fair: "Take It Easy" is okay., fine, inoffensively pleasant. "Witchy Woman" is silly and non-edgy (+ sexist in a classic '70s way). Speaking of '70s, "Chug All Night" is a strong contender for dumbest song of the decade (which was, as we all know, a golden age for dumb songs). "Most of Us Are Sad" feels genuinely heartfelt but suffers from a weak, diffident vocal. "Nightingale," "Train Leaves," "Devil," "Earlybird" share anodyne and indifferent playing and often somnolent, almost yawnful pacing, but each is otherwise forgettable and unspecial in its own unique way. "Peaceful Easy Feeling" is sweet and swinging, probably the best thing they ever did, which says something about just how overrated they were/are/hopefully won't continue to be. "Tryin" aims to rollick, but proves an unrousing (appropriately) end, and with shag-rug, long-hair and moustache vibes that should be amply embarrassing to all right-minded folks. One gets as moderately (fittingly so) disturbed/annoyed by the inherent middle-of-the-road-ness of this, its essential barely-above-average-ness (+ its altogether discouraging popularity), as by the ever-more-exorbitant prices they charged for however many farewell tours they ran. (Side-noting: what's up with articleless album title vs. "The Eagles"?). For all these reason, rounding down is the clear – and easy – thing to do.
Take it Easy - 3. Pas super bon opener, répétitif Witchy Woman - 3.5 Chug All Night - 3.
5/10 Very slow songs that imo haven’t aged well with time. Very basic sounds and lyricism that when gets interesting, barely dives into the topics and instead goes back to very thoughtless lyrics. There are some great peaks in this album that show how much talent the eagles do have, but this very much seems like an album that wasn’t thought out much and was an introductory album. (INDIVIDUAL SONGS THOUGHTS) Take it Easy - what an American tune. about just relaxing and going through life without overthinking the things around you. a little boring but it’s the theme of the song. Witchy woman - about a crazy heroine addict who fucks all night. it’s alright simple riffs. Chug all night - fun verses. I actually hate the chorus LOL. Again another song about wanting a girl. It’s one of the better songs but still eh. Most of us are sad - what a change up from wanting to have sex with heroine addicts and groupies. Good song fairly simple, a good break from the other songs. Nightingale - really fun song, the lyrics are well thought out. Way more creativity with this one. Train leaves this morning - I believe it’s about a girl that he believes was the one but didn’t work due to the situation they were in. He never wanted the truth from her and never looked back. Again I like the writing on this one more, this seems more emotional than “most of us are sad”. Take the devil: about being guided by the devil. Very simple song but i don’t know if back in the 70s if this was a well talked about topic during the rage of drugs and women that would come with fame. It’s eh Early bird - bird sample was sick. Ending guitar solo is cool af. The actually song is eh but I can pick things that really stand out Peaceful easy feeling - like this one. Well constructed song. Tryin’ - good ending song. High energy a good note to end on.
ok 6/10
Never actually listened to anything from the Eagles before this (depsite hearing Hotel California too many times). Pretty disappointing. First sign was alright, but then quickly got terrible. Chug All Night was embarrassing to listen to. Rest of it pretty terrible except for Take the Devil. Country needs to be resigned to the bin.
I don’t really enjoy the Eagles, and the hits on here were some of my least favorite of their hits. I was very pleased that this album did not contain Hotel California, because I assumed that with the amount of air play that song still gets 50 years later, it must be on every single one of their albums. They have a song called Chug All Night that I thought was probably the least interesting song in the album until I heard the next track, Most of Us are Sad. I like songs about sadness, the sadder the better honestly, I really like to feel the emotions of a sad song. This song didn’t move me and I nearly nodded off a minute. One more song of note would be early bird, which opens with the trilling of a songbird which is a little too cutesy for me, then the song starts and I keep finding myself thinking that the songwriter must have been very pleased with the toddler who helped conceive the lyrics. I’m giving this album 2 stars rather than one because it wasn’t so awful that I couldn’t listen to the entire thing and also because Hotel California wasn’t on it. So TL;DR This album left me wanting a whole lot more, and my expectations were pretty low to begin with because I’m not typically a fan. I’m going to listen to the album I missed yesterday now, Green by REM, as a reward for making it through this album.
Maybe could've been 3. I thought it was going to be better at the start but by the last few tracks I wanted the album to end. Aggressively mid dad rock. Witchy Woman and Nightingale were pretty good though. Listened 6/11/23
Take It Easy is great. Tryin was ok. Everything else was verryyyyy boring and repetitive and same. So disappointed, I hate the fucking eagles man.
This has some of the stupidest lyrics I’ve ever heard Whole album sounds like it drives a truck and drinks 26 cans of bud light a day
Eagles
I sort of like the Eagles for nostalgia reasons, but this one wasn't so great. To be honest, I was never a huge fan, really just a Greatest Hits and radio songs sort of listener. There's some to like here. But then there were some really low parts too like Witchy Woman and especially Most of us are Sad.. Earlybird was my favorite; great intro with the plucky banjo and then nope. Sigh.
Very middle of the range, nothing to really get excited or angry about. Got a feeling it's on heavy rotation in Hard Rock cafes. I like hotel California so it was annoying not to find it here. Peak meh, more of a 2 than a 3.
it's easy to like this record... and that's the problem
Little of value outside the decent singles at the start.
Pretty chill of course. I mean, it's the Eagles. Nice to relax to on a sunny summer afternoon as a random thing. For me, not as a dedicated "ahh, let me choose to listen to this right now". Just decent background music for a BBQ or something
Good musicians but boring dad music. My suspicion of them being overrated seems valid.
meh
Highlights: "Take It Easy" The thing about this Eagles album is they have a couple decent singles but just look at 1972. What a year. Talking Book. Can't Buy A Thrill. Pink Moon. Let's Stay Together. Close to the Edge. Machine Head. Even stuff in Eagles' own ostensible subgenre like Harvest and Can't Buy A Thrill blows them out of the water. That just leaves them the sellout of Laurel Canyon, the boyband parasite of The Grateful Dead, the well-produced gang of real musicians who refuse to be more than mediocre. The Eagles grew over time. Their songwriting got stronger and more varied. They had far better ballads and far better rockers. Meaning this is also probably their worst album. Mere professionalism in production and performance, no less, no more.
Boring and bland.
I'm not a big Eagles fan.
Lost all my notes. Hate the eagles. Some of the production on this was beautiful but most of these songs are still really dumb.
It's the Eagles, man. I hate the fucking Eagles.
OKish.
As a teenager, I hated The Eagles. They were boring dad rock and the local Rock station played Hotel California constantly, which gave me a passionate hatred of that song. Now as a much more mellow adult, I have decided to give them a real chance. It was off to a good start with Take it Easy and Witchy Woman. Witchy Woman really is a fantastic song and will probably be the only thing to really save this album for me because after that, it was kind of downhill. Nothing really grabbed me. Honestly when you compare it to many of the other albums that came out around this timeframe, this just seems watered down and uninspired. I can't put my finger on why, but it sounds like it is lacking any kind of emotions.
Yeah nah, boring and uneventful. <<add Big Lebowski joke>>
This album cannot chug all night
mira vos
This is full on beige - Take It Easy is a decent enough song, but not particularly memorable, but the rest of it really doesn't inspire much of anything. Perfectly pleasant to listen to in the most part (Chug All Night feels very weird and out of character for them), but it's pretty unambitious given how good their voices are. Should be doing a lot more (and did so with some later albums, much better than this). 2/5.
The dude was right.
Good, but I don't think I would listen to again
Like a rubbish Fleetwood Mac with more country.
Well
I was waiting for this album to be over for most of its run time. I felt like blowing my brains out while listening to this. That feeling wasn't really related to the fact that I was listening to this album, but it sure didn't help. It wasn't bad, but it was boring. The first two songs were okay, but there's not much going on after that. My favourite song was Earlybird.
This album appears to have been released 1 year before I myself was born. You look at a record in the seventies stocked with at least 3 bonafied hits (Take it Easy, Witchy Woman, Peaceful Easy Feeling), and, like me, you may be lulled into thinking you have landed upon a masterpiece. [sound of record player coming to screaming halt, e.g. when Animal House misfits walk into blues & soul bar..] Unfortunately for the sons of Linda Ronstadt, it did not play out that way on this record, yet they lived to more than survive. Mostly dribble here, but again, they grew & succeeded. Sometimes the delay of dominant success is the best thing a worthy band can ask for, particularly in the musical landscape which existed in the early/mid-70s. Artists who were resilient enough and had the support structure to lick their wounds, bounce back, find and gain a lasting audience based on their raw talent, like the Eagles had, were given the chance to come to the table and slay the American AOR populace once again. And this band and its principal songwrtiting core clearly did not think twice when it recieved further opportunities to deliver some of the greatest songs and records in American rock and roll history.
not for me
I mean, it has a couple good songs that I never want to hear again and also whatever, man.
MOR shite
Pues aparte del "Take it easy" me ha gustado bastante "Earlybird". Pero vamos a pesar de gustarme la Americana music más reciente algunos de estos grupos más históricos no termino de disfrutarlos. Se va a quedar en 2 estrellas.
"I hate the fucking eagles, man." I never really understood that line because I always like their hits like "Hotel California" and "Take It Easy" but Jesus Christ when you get a whole album of it they just really get under your skin. Couldn't make it more than 3 or 4 songs before turning it off.
Vad exceptionellt tråkigt detta är
Vaguely interesting with a few known hits. Now I’m not the kind of guy who goes after “hits” but the deep tracks on this album are unknown for a good reason. 2/5
It’s not hotel California. Not deserving of this list. Probably a 3 but downgrading it.
Not my style. Country is reaally boring
weak
I usually don't like to repeat a joke, but I had a rough night and I hate the fuckin' Eagles, man.
It’s hard to see what makes Eagles distinctive. Much of the album is dull and tiresome with little to excite the listener.
i hate country, even in the form of rock
Love Take it Easy. Hate Witchy Woman. Rest of the album did nothing for me. Eagles remain high on my list of overrated 70's bands.
The singles are all pretty great, and there are a couple of other good songs on here such as Train Leaves Here This Morning, but any album with Chug All Night can't get any higher than a 2
Aggressively mediocre music. Also Don Henley is a prick.
The kind of easy-listening, desert highway bar, car shop garage rock that's incredibly cliched and boring.
2.6 - Bland! Eagles have suffered considerable popular backlash thanks in no small part to the Big Lebowski. Having never heard this album, I thought some of that flack was unfairly directed, similar to how that one line in Sideways torpedoed Merlot wine sales. But now that I've heard this album I think that Eagles hate is fully justified.
Disappointing.
Meh
Over the last five decades, we've made a lot of societal progress. We've recognized human rights for marginalized groups, developed language to describe differing experiences, and expanded communication on a global scale. We've also come to realize that the Eagles suck ass. By blending the instrumentation of rock with the crossover country singer-songwriter stylings of guys like John Denver, Jim Croce, and Gordon Lightfoot, the Eagles watered down both genres to audio diarrhea. Lacking the punch of the former or the songwriting chops of the latter, these guys produced music with all the personality of a faded denim jacket. It's pretty sad, because a number of members of this band have produced much better music in their solo careers. I guess they brought out the worst in each other.
Not much here beyond the singles, and as I don't like Witchy Woman that is two tracks. Two stars is generous. The stars aligned as a singles band got it together for one terrific album. This is not that album.
I really dislike this band. People seem to love them for reasons that are entirely unclear to me. They are fine. Their music is fine. Their lyrics are fine. That's it. There are a thousand bands that deserved the radio airplay that the Eagles got more than the Eagles did, and that's what bothers me about this band. This album starts off with Take It Easy, which is an okay song, and then it gets progressively stupider from there. Chug All Night sounds like a song I would write and play for my friends as a stupid joke. Most of Us Are Sad is so on-the-nose that it knocked my glasses off my face. Every song after that is essentially indistinguishable to me because the Eagles are hacks. Peaceful, Easy Feeling is an okay song, I guess because it's basically Take It Easy without the banjo. Fuck the Eagles, I'm out 2/5
Too country to actually be good.
eagles var mykje meir plagsomt enn eg trudde
Unmemorable. Im sure people like it, but itsrather dated now
One of the top-tier dad rock albums of all time, if that's your thing. Notable track "Peaceful Easy Feeling".
Not much going on
Begins well but songs soon become fairly tepid
A classic I already loved
I always thought the Eagles were kind of bland. Some dinosaur band grown ups would babble to me about when I was in High School. This album did nothing to change my mind. I guess Witchy Woman is ok. 2 Stars for that.
Apparently obligatory Big Lebowski reference. With that out of the way, I can't really argue with Take It Easy, oh well, until the banjo kicks in, fuck off man. This album came up early and I skipped it for months because it's The Eagles. Came back to give it a fair crack now. If Witchy Woman is representative of the better songs, then this isn't going to be fun. Shite. I didn't have high hopes for a song called 'Chug all night' and those expectations were realised. Following that with Most of us Are Sad is actually hilarious. The vocal harmonies are very nice. There are some songs I can tolerate... (Train leaves...) And heck, these obviously influenced Midlake and other stuff I like. But, well - Ok I'm just going to say, it's not for me. 1 star for an imagined version of Take it Easy with no superfluous banjo, and 1 star for being in some way responsible for Van Occupanther.
Strum strum strummmm strum woo aaaah babyyy Earlybird's okay.
Twangling guitars mid tempo tracks. Easy listening and inoffensive. Bit boring tho. Not my type of music.
A fraction of what they would become.
A couple of noteworthy tracks kick this album off big time and then, there's a sameness to it all that makes this a bit of a slog.
I know people love this but not me hombre
Before they figured out how annoying they could be, they were less annoying. Who knew? This is somewhere between Buffalo Springfield and an empty biscuit tin.
Pleasant country rock. Nothing I especially want to revisit
The only worthwhile track here is "Take It Easy". The rest is very boring and forgettable. It's a bold move to start an album with one of your best songs. Doesn't quite deserve a 1, so a 2 is fitting.
Middling at best
Bit dull. Couple of catchy songs. Needed more Walsh.
Seule toune intéressante est Take It Easy, le reste c'est un snooze fest.
Wasn't that great
*shrugs*
Wasn’t really a surprise when I looked at the Eagles wiki page and discovered the band originated from Los Angeles. The music they make is what I like to call Corporate Country, totally divorced from its original working class and black roots and we end up getting songs like Chug All Night. I don’t even wanna talk about that song, it was such a cringefest and sadly a vision of what mainstream country would become. The album doesn’t help itself by having the two best tracks first. It all goes downhill after Witchy Woman. The lyrics are pretty surface level. There’s a lot of lyrics pertaining to loving a woman but they way it’s written doesn’t come across as a genuine emotion. Rather that they’ve written about loving a woman because they think it will sell well. It takes the aesthetic of country and wears it like a poorly fitted costume. Best tracks: Take It Easy/Witchy Woman Worst Tracks: Chug All Night
Like low fat vanilla icecream with vanilla topping. Production quality is good, but that only makes hearing the boringness even easier.
Insert lebowski reference here
Country + classic rock is just a recipe for me to hate an album. I've never enjoyed them at all unfortunately.
Say what you like about this album, you can't argue with its duration
meh 2,5
Ihan okei vaikken Eaglesii oo ikinä varsinaisesti fanitellu. Onneks se puhkisoitettu ei ollu tällä levyllä
meh. old man music
Okay, little boring in some spots.
Fucking hate The Eagles
While I wouldn't go out of my way, I wouldn't be mad to listen to this on vinyl. The vocal harmonies really are what keeps the songs interesting.
Ok
I like this twice as much as Hotel California. I find the hits more palatable, possible due to the fact that I wasn’t already fed up with the Eagles at the time they came out. The supporting songs are stronger and I prefer the country flavor over commercial rock.
This album has not aged well. Everything about it just reeks of Americana and is clichéd.
No other band embodies "classic rock" more than The Eagles. Overplayed to hell, every human on the planet knows at least a few songs by The Eagles. And three of those tracks are right here. Great production, but most huge pop bands could claim that. What The Eagles have going for them is their great songwriting. If you just listen to the lyrics to even the lesser songs on this album, you'll see potential if only their sound took off the same way. Their most famous track "Hotel California" is the perfect example of what could have been to most of the songs they write. This album is supposed to be country rock, but it mostly sounds like they're trying the copy the sound of others that came before them, like the Byrds or Neil Young. I can't give them any points for innovation, except maybe the song "Earlybird." There's little else I could say for most of the tracks. For the three radio staples, I don't find them annoying despite how overplayed they are. In fact, I find them relaxing. "Witchy Woman" is the best song on the album but like the others it doesn't take off anywhere exciting. Overall, it's a disappointing effort by a band that could have been so much more than an over-commercialized product.
Two good songs, one of which was written by Jackson Browne and not the Eagles.
its not offensive but I'm also not rushing out to buy it
I am definitely not into country!
background
Pretty boring radio rock
Criminally generic and boring.
Early Eagles, I guess. Turned it off after about 4 songs. All sounds a bit dated, and not in a good way.
There were moments when they sounded pretty good, but overall finding this bland, which is generally my reaction to The Eagles.
a little corny 😫
I just really don't like The Eagles. I tried
Dopo Take It easy solo Earlybird mi è sembrata all'altezza delle mie aspettative. Poi basta.
Questo è forse il tipico disco da 3, uno di quelli che non ti schifano però poi te lo scordi dopo poco. Quindi per questo dopo oltre 50 dischi gli do 2, sarebbe un 2.5 ma non sento di premiarli.
"Chug" is a decent tune and "Early Bird" is a twangy little stomper with a banjo lick that caught me by surprise. However, their popular songs have been played to death so bury this album in the desert and call it a day. 2 stars.
I feel like if you asked an AI what a road trip across America sounded like, this is what it would come up with and I don't mean that as a compliment. 2 stars.
Agradable, muy folk para el trip
MOR af.
Not really my thing
Very boomer & country vibes
Now we're talking. Actually, with the exception of the two hits, I found it a bit dull
Was okay - not for me tho
Nääeeee inte country... Och det var inte ens den med hotel california:( Asså 1/2 av 5
the eagles are so fucking bland and boring.
They got the voices, the sound, the expertise, the harmonies... But I didn’t find the songs.
Not a fan of their harmonies, but 'Take the Devil' is almost a redeeming song. 3/10, whyyyyyyyyyyy
Take it easy
Meh. “Most of Us Are Sad” ain’t bad.
Great first track but otherwise middle of the road and tedious.
Singles are great but everything else is very mediocre and forgettable. 4/10
well, it's over, and that's a plus. three hits everyone of a certain age has heard a million times over, plus a bunch of filler that just kinda sits there. not for me, but someone must love this album.
Boring
