I went in to this one trying not to think about the current state of Kanye. I'd heard so many times about what a game-changing album this was when it was released. I was surprised by how it just felt like another standard hip-hop album of the era. Typical raps about being a drug dealer, and being the greatest rapper, etc. Those horrible unfunny skits between songs. I'll admit there was a time when I started to enjoy a song, "Spaceship", but then I noticed I hadn't heard Kanye in a while. Seems I can appreciate his guests far more than I care for him.

Removed Album #17 (List: https://pastebin.com/cSThNiK9) Yup, this album was scrubbed from future editions of the book. A big surprise, since I know that this album and the also-removed Good Kid m.A.A.d City are big deals within the hip-hop community. This is my first-ever Kanye album. I listened to a snippet of The Life of Pablo a few years back, though I don't remember a single thing about that album and I didn't even finish it, so that one doesn't count. I'm not expecting to like this album, though I've heard Kanye be described as an entry-level pick for hip-hop, so who's to know? An hour sixteen. Fuck my FUCKING life, dude. Why? Why do these hip-hop albums always have to be so fuuuuuucking long? Anyways, there's some merit in this one. The instrumentals are impressive. There's a varied catalogue of instruments, genres and vocals that are sampled on here, though throw out just about everything I said as I didn't like this one all that much. To a hip-hop fan I'm sure there's a lot they can sink their teeth into, but I'm just not a part of that crowd. The already limited appeal of this album is hurt greatly by how repetitious and padded the songs, and I also can't help but view the hip-hop song structure on this album as greatly limited and unremarkable. Kanye is well-suited to this genre of music and has an accessible vocal style, though it didn't stop me from feeling bored out of my mind while listening to this. "We Don't Care" is an alright opener. I like the weightless instrumental and how the lighter parts intercept with a punchier, more traditional hip-hop sound. The programming of "Jesus Walks" didn't work on me. We live in different times, what can I say? "Breathe In, Breathe Out" was the point where my eyes finally glazed over and I lost whatever investment I had in this album. Such a boring, lethargic tune. Why was this album removed? Beats me, though I know that the editors of this book do a hack rush-job whenever they're assembling the new editions, so I think it's just a simple case of this album being replaced with a more acclaimed successor album. Granted, Kanye has two not-yet-removed albums on the list, so it's anyone's guess. Book time. "...one of 2004's most-anticipated and well-received albums". A lot of collaborators. I know this one's a big deal, so I don't need more confirmation than this. I cosign this inclusion and will graciously save it from the ex-inductee moniker.

One of the more notable features of the pop culture landscape of the last five or so years was Kanye outing himself as a Black Nazi Fuck. It's difficult separating the art from the artist at the best of times, and it proves so here because he does present a banging collection of beats, rhymes, flows and collabs that would stand up to anything you want to throw at it. Jesus Walks is iconic, as are All Falls Down, Spaceship, Get Em High, Breathe In Breathe Out, and others you can care to mention. If he wasn't a Black Nazi Fuck it would be a 5. Never mind separating the art from the artist, like most Nazis he'd be more interested in separating your head from your shoulders if he had the chance. So... fuck him. Having never before heard anything on this album, I was concerned I might enjoy it and be conflicted. Thankfully, that didn't materialize. I can confidently say that both the art and the artist have been given far more attention than they deserve. Let's be honest. Even if you like this, you can't deny that a 76-minute album with trite skits and a presumptuous, self-important outro could be objectively described as anything but tedious.

Essentially a deluxe edition of The Fame with an EP attached, there are an insane amount of hits: Just Dance, LoveGame, Paparazzi, Poker Face, Bad Romance, Alejandro, Dance in the Dark, Telephone. What more do you need from a debut?! There are a few superfluous tracks towards the end of The Fame that could have been cut that are holding it back from being perfect, but that's the only minor note I have. I love this album, I love Lady Gaga, and cannot wait to see her next weekend at MSG. 4.5/5

Not much to say about this. Radio friendly generic chart rap. A lot of work went into it and he obviously has skills but it was too preppy and toothless for me at the time and it is much the same now only with a side of mental health emergency, neo-nazism and woman hatred. Later, when Kanye was getting into weird and experimental stuff he had a few top notch production ideas but this record has zero edge. Long, lame and boring. Life is too short for stuff that goes in one ear and out of the other.

This one was a chore to get through. I had some visceral hate reactions to some of the songs when they came on. Workout Plan. I think the other was Graduation Day. I thought Gold Digger was on this album but I guess not. When I was in college I worked with this girl who would put this album on every time we worked together. I must have listened to it 50 times. I remember thinking it was kind of funny because she had dropped out of college. One time she invited me over for dinner. She was a big woman. After we ate dinner we sat on her couch and she took her shoe off and stretched it out across the couch towards me. I don't remember how I got out of that situation, but I remember the way she looked at me, with hunger in her eyes.

In a vacuum I'd probably rate this one as a 3 - that's where I put Common's Kanye-produced album Be, which to me feels like a spiritual cousin to this album - but I'm choosing to apply an artist turd penalty here. West is a still living, still active artist who sucks a whole lot and who played a nasty role in American politics for a season. Not sure where I'd draw the line on this - I didn't let the fact that Phil Spector murdered someone weigh down my rating of his Christmas album - but I think Kanye's over it. liked songs: Here we go again. We Don't Care was a hard listen. Surprisingly, Kanye's rapping and singing was fine. The kid's choir, however, may qualify as cruel and unusual punishment. All Falls Down was fine. It's very 2004. Spaceship had a neat bassline, but why the plastic garbage can sound effect? I have many thoughts on Jesus Walks, but they all boil down to Kanye's ego. Never Let Me Down was decent. Get Em High sucks. The New Workout Plan was a funny track. Interesting string arrangement. Slow Jamz was the most musically interesting track so far. Breathe In Breathe Out... Ludacris' part made me want to "peace ouuuuuuuutt..." School Spirit (+ skits): Kanye, why do you hate education so much? Two Words and Through the Wire were fine. The samples on Family Business made me irrationally angry because they were so annoying and so far up in the mix. Which is a shame, because the guest vocals/arrangement were actually good. Last Call... Kanye, my dude, this could've been an email Again, I think the only real credit I can give here is for some very talented people that worked on the album (John Legend, Miri Ben-Ari, a lot of others). 1.5

I had never listened to a Kanye West album in its entirety before and I was wondering if I would like it. Nah. Which is quite handy as he seems like a bit of a dick.

Album 413 of 1001 Kanye West - The College Dropout Rating : 1 / 5 I've listened. I started listening again but got through 2 tracks and wondered to myself why I was giving this piece of crap a moment of my time. I then went to the album 'Teenager of the Year' from Frank Black, in order to enjoy some good music. I see why some might like it, but I say, screw this loser.
