Not my jam, but it was fine. Listenable. But if this is all mods can you imagine how boring vanilla is

I've never really been particularly fond of The Jam. Personally felt they lacked the spikiness of other bands of the era - and listening to a full album of their material just kind of showed how one note their schtick could be. Aside from a couple of slower tracks, this all sort of blended together for me.
It's kind of generic 70s rock music, something my white uncle would have listened to back in the day.

More mediocre lightweight punk, great. Failed to grab me completely, felt very beige and dull. Even tried a second time to listen a bit more attentative but nope.

Let’s give credit where credit is due. These guys laid the groundwork for bands, like the Clash. However, The Clash did it better. Much much better. It’s painfully obvious that they ripped the Jam off LOL! But it’s just not exciting for me. Bland vocals and the hooks are not hooky enough.

Another band trying to sound like the Kinks. This one is better than some of the other ones from the 90s.
The Jam always have an unmistakable yobbo flavour but this one feels more like a football hooligan sad because their team lost again than kicking your head in for spilling their pint.
I was excited to get introduced to a band who are introduced as contemporaries of the Sex Pistols and the Specials. They were pretty forgettable, unfortunately. To think they were called punk. Nope.

I can see this being a new thing back in 1978. This was okay.

The most I can say about this album is that it was OK. It’s the definition of an “alright” album. The album has an undeniably 70’s feel but it’s the “smooth radio” kind of 70’s that I’m not really a fan of. The kind of music that no drugs were involved in the making off and it lacks that “cocaine-indused-sound” that I love, like Fleetwood Mac and Pink Floyd. It felt more like a post-punk 80’s album at times, falling flat on itself. There was nothing remarkable about this album, it was just music. I’m glad I can say I have listened to the Jam now, as it's a band that always caught my eye, but I’m not overly interested in exploring them further at this time. It’s very dad-clicking-fingers music.

There are some albums that I’m sure were “ahead of their time”, but now that we’re after their time, they sound unimpressive. I think I lack the context for this one because it sounds like forgettable Brit-rock.

Wasnt a tiring listen, but nothing stood out to me 🤷
Pretty unremarkable to me compared to other rock from this era. Some parts sound like the Beatles, some feel like the Clash, all of it is a worse version of that music. Can't see myself coming back to any of this.
Weller's voice is IMMENSELY annoying, in all of its appearances. "Down in the Tube Station....." is undeniably catchy though.

As for The Jam’s “All Mod Cons” album, I have to say that I was a bit disappointed… There are several songs by them that I enjoy – and had never heard this album before, so I had a good vibe, so perhaps my expectations were too high… There is nothing wrong with the album, as the recording quality is good, there is decent diversity among the tracks, and most are fairly well-written and performed – it’s just that nothing really grabbed me… “Mr. Clean” was one of the better tracks, and “The Place I Love” was solid – though the part I liked the most was the little throwback musical section that reminded me of the same sequence in “So You Want To Be A Rock & Roll Star” – so points for that, but if that was the best part of the song, well… Best I can do here is a 2, as it was fairly well-done for what it was…
I don't know a lot about this band. But, this is one of those albums where you can just tell they have better albums. I'm gonna listen to their others. If this is their best, I'll be disappointed
Paul Weller does come across as an insufferable prick, but he can write a tune. He can also steal from the Beatles and the Kinks in almost equal measures. Just not enough in this for me. Down in the Tube Station is good.

Diving into The Jam's "All Mod Cons" felt like stepping into a realm of music that I feel I should have been drawn to, yet the reality was quite the opposite. Despite the hype and cult following that this band has garnered over the years, I found myself struggling to connect with their sound. Perhaps it's a disconnect with punk music as a whole on my part—I've noticed a pattern where it rarely captivates me, often leaving me feeling disengaged. Most of the tracks seemed to merge into one mass, lacking the distinctiveness I crave in music. That said, "English Rose" emerged as a delightful exception, offering a moment of unexpected beauty and a break from the uniformity, standing out as a genuine highlight of the album. "Mr. Clean" and "Fly" also offered something a bit different from the rest, providing slight deviations from the album's sound. However, these tracks weren't enough to elevate my overall impression of the album beyond a modest 2-star rating. The scarcity of engaging melodies and the sameness of much of the album makes it hard for me to imagine a future in which this album will suddenly resonate with me. While I believe that some music can indeed grow on you over time, revealing its depths and nuances upon repeated listens, I just can't foresee that happening with "All Mod Cons." My experience with music has taught me that there's usually an immediate hint of potential connection, a spark, even if faint—and unfortunately, I didn't find that spark here. I keep saying “forgettable” for a lot of these albums and I’d apologize for it but I can’t remember which ones
This was a decent album. British upbeat new age. They did a pretty good job, the music was crisp and well produced. The drawback is that there wasn’t anything that made me excited. It was easy to enjoy but also easy to forget. Not bad just not worth revisiting. 5.6/10
It's not bad, but I don't understand why this would be anywhere in the top 1000, let alone several others we have listened to. I realize everyone has different tastes but many of these seem to be nothing too special, or groundbreaking. Anyone can make a list.

Sounds good, and i can see connections to The Who etc. But 5 minutes after i stopped listening, i couldn't recall a single note.
This album just reaffirmed my distaste for punk rock music. Specifically punk rock from the 70s. There is nothing on this album for me. Sure there are some cool little bass locks here and there... But they seem irrelevant to the whole song. You have a typical Fuck you punk song with boring music and annoying vocals, and then a cool bass fill. Yeah, it's pretty tasty... But why? What is it adding? If anything, to me it screams, this song is only good for 2 seconds, half way through the song. I just don't care for this music. This might sound pretentious, but I'm so happy that I got into good music. Yes, "good" is subjective.. Obviously people love punk, and all to them. But if someone were to show me the Jam and say they're the best artist in the world and its their favourite... I would say "well, they might be your favourite. But you're wrong on how high of a pedestal you put them on." There is just so much better music from this era. I guess I owe punk rock music some credit for putting some angst and aggression into the mainstream. Should I give them credit? Were they the pioneers? I don't know... Maybe? Do I hate punk? Not entirely, but I don't care for it. I'd have given this a lower score if it wasn't for them being slightly more tolerable than their peers of this era. I'm looking at you Sex Pistols.

Een beetje een interbellum plaat: 't is geen punk of pop geen disco. Wat is het wel? Het is uptempo maar geen rock. Ow ja: English New Wave en "Mod Revival" (die komt van Wikipedia): retro 70 jaren muziek in de jaren 80. Niet mijn ding in dit geval. Muziek uit de jaren 70 is ok, maar ik loop niet warm voor the Jam. Het album: een paar interresante tracks, maar de productie is een dikke notensaus. Een muziekbrei. Niks springt eruit of valt op. Lift muziek wat mij betreft. Een paar uitzonderingen: David Watts (track 4) heeft zijn momenten. Verder niets bijzonders. Waarom ik dit moest luisteren is me een raadsel.

I forgot this album while I was listening to it
I’d read about The Jam in NME & Melody Maker long before I heard them. Then one day, around the time this, their third album, was released, I was spending lunchtime in Chelsea Records. This was an import shop in Pitt St,Sydney. They were having a sale & I picked up the first 2 Jam L.P’s for $2.99 each (at a time when the R.R.P. was $5.99). Couldn’t wait to get them home but was pretty disappointed by them - I really did not like Weller’s voice - & did not bother listening to the band again for a good 5 years - around the time they broke up & Weller formed Style Council. I acquired quite a few of their old singles & realised that they had released some really good ones, most notably That’s Entertainment, which I think is one of the best English singles released in the 80’s. As for this album, I think the best song on it is The Kinks’ David Watts, the first single released off the album, and featuring bassist Bruce Foxton on vocals. I also really enjoy English Rose - a ballad & totally different to the rest of the material here. I first heard the last 2 tracks on singles & they’re fine, but not among my favourite Jam singles. I had not played this album for decades.
I just never liked Paul Weller. Don't like the Jam, don't like the Style Council, don't like his solo 'Modfather' work. Lots of people really dig the Jam, and god knows I have tried many, many times over the past 40 years to understand it. But I just don't. Chalk this up as yet another unsuccessful attempt to get into the Jam. The only Paul Weller track I like is the Kosmos (Lynch Mob Bonus Beats Remix). This was okay. I'd have liked it a lot more if it had a different lead singer. He does that thing with his voice where it sounds like... I dunno like when goofy does the Yuck Yuck laugh, like you're artificially increasing the size of your pharynx. The Thin Lizzy guy does the same thing and I don't like it. Anyway, the music was pretty good, the lyrics were super repetitive and I didn't like the vocals.

The Strokes definitely took inspiration from the title track, or maybe from the same inspiration as the title track, who knows how far it goes. That was the coolest part of the album for me. A couple decent songs.

I really wanted to like this because there are some The Jam songs I like a lot, but I couldn't get into it. I like the vocals, but the lyrics and the general cadence didn't seem exciting.

I liked the later Jam music better, and Paul Weller's Style Council even better. You can hear the guitar and bass/drum syncopation that influenced new wave and pop in the 90's. Also you can hear how the Kinks influenced them.
People think Weller is the coolest shit ever and I still can't see it.

I believe I dislike new wave. I really dislike the vocalist's voice. The only song I liked on the album was "English Rose" which appears to be the most popular song on the album. If I could, I would probably give this 1.5 stars.
Best Song: To Be Someone (Didn't We Have A Nice Time). Very typically classic British rock. Worst Song: In The Crowd. Bit of an overly long jam session that never went anywhere interesting. Overall: Seems like the kind of music that goes over great in a pub as background to a round of drinks, but listened to outside of that context it's just another band on the pile of classic rock, indiscernible from most of the others.

Not listened to an album by The Jam all the way through before, as far as I know. I know the singles. Some I love, some I like. I tend to prefer the later, more soul-tinged stuff. I didn’t mind this but I found Weller’s voice a bit same-y after a while, and the constant bass/drums/guitar/vocals configuration runs out of steam for me after a while. The singles still sound great and Weller is without doubt a great lyricist, but I didn’t hear any undiscovered gems in the unknown (to me) album tracks.

Just meh. I listened to this on Friday and it's Monday now. I honestly can't remember much about it. Maybe I wasn't giving it enough attention, but it seemed pretty bland to me. Singer reminded me of a cut-rate Joe Strummer. Nothing against this, just didn't seem special.

A volte un po' punk, a volte pop-rock, in più, ci sono dei pezzi in acustico: non si capisce bene che direzione prendano e per questo motivo li ho trovati un minimo interessanti e moderni. Però purtroppo sono abbastanza insofferente quando sento questo sound british, soprattutto nelle chitarre, che mi nausea e mi rovina l'esperienza. Power pop, mod revival, and punk rock built from sharp guitars, driving rhythms, melodic bass lines, and urgent vocals feels like reading a stack of opinion columns written with great conviction but surprisingly little that sticks with you afterward—spirited, well-crafted, and for me ultimately underwhelming. The album is full of energy and intelligence, yet it rarely developed the memorable hooks or emotional pull needed to keep me engaged.

I had a nice lawn and we had just had a bunch of rain and he proceeded to walk on it and ruin it. I was wearing a Ben Sherman T-Shirt and he asked me if I liked the Jan. Wow I really did not like it. This is a perfect example of this particular genre of music that I can't force myself to like. It's always from the UK, the vocalist is bad and sings in a screamy, non-melodic manner, the songs are kind of punky or new wave and there's very few engaging melodies. Instead, it's pretending to be somehow alternative or cutting edge for killing momentum of any interesting melody that might appear in their songs. They all sound the same to me. I really, really do not like it and I feel like if it wasn't from the UK, no one would care about it. There's so much more interesting music outside of this 'genre' - in particular, from non-English speaking countries.

It was okay but nothing really grabbed me. I could listen to it maybe as background. Nothing stood out nothing did it for me
Sounds minimalist, rhyming structure is weird, kinda corny. Zero songs added to my playlist. Just not my cup of tea.

Not impressive. Starting to worry who’s picking the 💿 for this list of 1000!
Sort of dreading this. Tried The Jam before and it did nothing for me. I am onside with Paul Wellers lefty politics, but I find his mod revivalist, suburban angst bloody boring. Trying to listen with an open mind but two tracks in it just sounds like such mannered tripe. Mr Clean is a little more interesting, like Motown during amateur hour... Then there's a Kinks cover. David Watts is a great song and The Jam don't massacre it. The Kinks remain better though. Finally, there's a good song - English Rose. It's pretty and sweet and has sharp little edges. Then there's the rest of the album. See above. Paul Weller is a hack.
