Reviews (page 7 of 8)

Good one. Reminds me sparse can be good. Also, it came out in late '78. I think it's got elements of 70's rock, but also alludes to more 80's styles.

I liked it. Easy listen and felt pretty cohesive. Nothing groundbreaking, but good all around.

Meh, it didn't change my life

Most songs felt the same... not a great working soundtrack.

it was ok didn't love it or hate it

Not bad

nothing to rave about - clearly an influence on what followed but it's not blowing my trumpet

Not bad, good listen 3/5

Weezer vibes

I thought this was good, I would listen to it again, but not particularly mind blowing or anything.

Cool example of early punk music. I had heard of The Jam, but never really listened to them. Highlights: -Mr. Clean -David Watts -English Rose -In the Crowd -Fly -Down in the Tube Station at Midnight

This actually pretty decent, it’s a shame that some of the album tracks sort of plod along but the hits really work. Down in the Tube Station at Midnight is a massive tune

Pretty good. I enjoyed the first half of it better than the second. Easy listen.

Some good songs, some not so good songs. It was an interesting listen but not my normal cup of tea!

It's ok. Nothing bad here but it's just sorta there for me. I'm indifferent.

Interesting mix of Britpop vocals and more punk-leaning guitars. Slight traces of Sex Pistols here and there, an overall enjoyable listen

Mr. Clean

avergae . wont listen again

Better things to come.

This album has a fun sound to it, with some nice harmonies. Ultimately it leaves me feeling a bit flat. Like I feel like I should be more into it, but I'm not. It's not bad, it's just okay 3/5

Very punk influenced

decent.

This one sounds more 80s than '78. The beginning of Mr. Clean is kinda rocking, but otherwise the rest of the album is just alright.

A solid 3

Solid but nothing amazing

Not to bad 3

I enjoyed this a little more than the previous Jam album, but still very "eh" overall. I enjoyed the more lively performance on this record. Favorite tracks: "David Watt", "Billy Hunt", "In the Crowd"

1978. Key Songs: Down In The Tube Station At Midnight, It's Too Bad

Pretty cool, like early punk and singer sounded a bit like a cleaner Lemmy

2 goede nummers

The Jam - All Mod Cons In one ear, and straight out the other. Barring David Watts and 'Tubestation there was nothing memorable about any of this. It's like ai had been asked to create a Who/Faces/Northern Soul/Beatles mix that you can play to granny and that promises to be home before it gets dark. Totally inoffensive and increasingly persuades me that The Jam were nothing more than a slightly above average singles band. Best Track - David Watts Worst Track - Fly 4/10

boring

Somebody out there likes this. I have no idea why it is on this list. I have enough weak British bands to last me a lifetime.

Nothing interesting or exciting about this album

forgot all about it the minute it was over. only fun thing about it was taking a look at the music video of the last song in the album, and seeing that the audience looks just as bored as i was while listening to this

I would like to stop having British new wave weird rock albums on this 1001 list. Every time I get one of these from a band I’ve never heard of before I look it up and some magazine which lasted for 3 year calls it a pillar of the genre and an amazing album; and then it’s just disappointing. The guitars and drums are fine, as is the other backing. The lyrics are nothing new, and the overall sound is like many things I’ve heard before. Just okay.

Standouts English Rose

Unique melodies but not great

Meh. Another just ok british album that is on here for reasons unbeknownst to the listener. I'm sure it has some sort of influence I have missed, but that doesn't make it required listening. Not offensive, but not special.

Certainly a competent album, but I can’t help but feel like among its contemporaries this album fails to be transgressive enough to hold my attention. I got a little excited by the song English Rose, as it started to add more depth to the albums sound, and it’s a good song, but everything just flattens out after. Just sounds like… how do I say… Brit slop. Like The Clash with no edge.

Ok sound

Du rock nul

Du rock pas original

War mal ganz nett

OK, I get that. The aesthetic here is minimalist. Simple song structures, direct lyrics without pretension. So maybe once in a while, the stars align, and you hit on something timeless, but for the most part that is a recipe for disposable music. Of the moment, not re-listenable. Quick expiration. There’s gotta be some sort of inverse law about how much effort and artistry you put into something and how far into the future you can expect someone to want to listen to it. I do not want to listen to this.

YANWA (Yet another new wave album)

meh is really all i can say

The first half of the album posed me two main questions. Firstly Why? And secondly how did they ever get to record a fourth? Dire doesn't even begin to express how bad it was. Then just when you're thinking this can't get any worse, you are proved right. The very wonderful England's Rose flights your ears I the most delightful way. And it is followed by a very passable cover of David Watts. And later we get Down in the Tubestation. But unfortunately the rest was so dire even this triumvirate cannot drag the album up to mediocrity. So another 2 im afraid.

I've never been a big fan of Paul Weller or The Jam and this effort was pretty uninspiring. Tuneful and well performed, but they had better years ahead of them.

English Rose sounds very Britpop, especially with the flat singing. Otherwise all fine, but didn't really do anything for me. David Watts was the standout track for me.

It seems nostalgia cycles were already a thing in the late 70's. The Jam are bringing back Mod, a style from... only about 15 years prior?? OK, I mean, it's not bad. It's a perfectly fine rock album, and without that background, it's nothing more than that. Key tracks: English Rose Billy Hunt

Some cool guitars, but this album will be easily forgotten. This sort of white boy music doesnt speak to me emotionally AT ALL

Did not age well

Not that great. I liked their Special Beat Service but not this

I enjoy ‘All Mod Cons’ marginally more than ‘Sound Affects’, but on the whole the album doesn’t really linger in the memory bank for me once it’s finished. It’s fine and all, but ultimately forgettable.

This era of Brit punk rock is fine, and I liked some of the songs that had a bit more open sounds than typical punk. But it all kinda blends together

It was ....fine.

5/10 (2) Best songs: Billy Hunt British new-wave band I've never heard of. Verdict? Um... well, it happened. The music is nice enough, a bit muted, never really "goes there" if you know what I mean. The vocals and lyrics are... fine. The album is kind of dull, with a few nice beats here and there. I don't actively dislike it, but I don't think it's particularly good or memorable, either. (Fun discovery post-listen: on the US release they switched out Billy Hunt with The Butterfly Collector, which was later covered by my favorite band Garbage in the 90s. That cover is one of my favorites of all time. So... that's interesting anyways.)

I have tried multiple times to like The Jam. I was excited to try again with this album. I have people I respect love this band. I must have something wrong with me, I just don't get it.

Groupe inconnu. Les morceaux sont plutôt dynamiques, avec un beau son de basse. Mais l'album ne propose rien de vraiment original. Pas désagréable (+1) mais pas vraiment intéressant. =>2/5

not for me

it should be my style, didn't enjoy it tho

I like this one even less than the other one by them. If punk was dad rock. Good bass playing though.

Deserves a closer listen

Loved it

bleh. something between a 2 and a 2.5? or maybe even something between a 2.5 and a 3 maybe? did little to nothing for me.

Were they the “Oasis” of the 70’s? Lots of hype, but pretty underwhelming

Not my jam. Pretty repetitive.

Sounds a lot like The Clash to me, who I've never liked. I'm just not a fan of this sort of sound, especially with this dude's vocals.

Pleasant enough but didn’t make much of an impression other than noticing there was a bridge quality between 70s classic rock and something more 80s.

Not much to listen to. None of the tunes were not catchy and will pass.

Should be drinking a pint debating the lads about who is gonna win the premier league in a pub while listening to this. I am not, so this album falls flat, and the distractingly British elements begin to wear down my soul.

Why did I have to listen to this?

It’s okay, not really for me though

I have always really really struggled to understand the appeal of these guys. I’m not sure they were really the first ones to do the mod/punk/pop thing. So other than Weller’s attitude and some interesting lyrics, musically it’s basic (and heavily relies on hackneyed Townsendesque, chu-ching flourishes), and vocally it’s not strong or with great melodies. So it’s all rather forgetful for me, yet apparently not to many. I remain mystified.

i knew it was shit from their bonnets

Why do all the bands from the 60s and 70s always have lyrics about “pretty little young girls”

just didn't really click with it

Gosh I kinda get it but mostly don't. I can hear the English bean and the clash in there somewhere but feel like I'm missing the point/ significance here. I see the groundwork for some great English bands in here but is seems very surface level. Feels like the safe/BBC version of what was actually happening.... Maybe I don't have a personal connection/ like the wrong football team or something. Just nothing I found really that moving. But ya can hear some of the downstairs impacts of this.

2.3 1x driving to Atlas

Not my favorite. Too poppy

Es ist ein Album, inspierirertt mich nicht gerade

generic british rock. glad it was only 38 minutes

maybe i didnt give it a proper listen. nice overall, but not too interesting.

Once again, underwhelmed by an album and group.

??? ach ja, schon Wieder vergessen, im Anschluss läuft zufällig King Tuby, oh cool was ist das denn...c

Seems like fairly generic early britpop. Not much here for me, but not terrible to listen to.

Another meh…

Eh, nothing special.

Didn’t know a whole album could feel like filler. Preferred when they strayed into either punk vibes (Billy Hunt, which is then ruined by the dumb chorus) or acoustic sounds (English Rose). But despite trying all these different sounds, they mostly sound like an inferior Clash.

Not really my thing. Not super into early punk and not in a huge listening mood when I played it

This project is giving me a super power: I can look at an album cover and know mostly what it's gonna sound like, and guess the year/country. i suspect that says more about this list than it does about my prediction ability; after a certain point, one does wonder how many 1970s british bands need to be on this list.

It’s ok. Pretty standard rock album with songs that start to blend together. Doesn’t set itself apart from its peers.

Kinda boring music. Tries to be upbeat but misses the mark. There is little variation in style between tracks, so the music tends to run together.

average

Читав книжку про історію поп-музики в UK і там як раз було досить багато різної музики джемів. І деякі пісні гурту я зберіг, але жодного з цього альбому. Непогана музика свого часу

Thankfully we have the internet to inform us that “All Mod Cons” is short for All Modern Conveniences, commonly used in British real estate ads. This group has many tracks on the album about people (Billy Hunt, David Watts, Mr. Clean). The music is ok, but unfortunately all these tracks are totally forgettable. At least “Down in the Tube Station at Midnight” tells a good story. 2.5 stars for the Jam.

Another rock album.

Forgettable

Not loving this one. It's a 2 star for me. Not terrible but not for me.

Paul seller before he got really good

Not bad, but nothing special either

Nothing too spectacular but it’s a decent album. Also surprised that this was in the 70s considering it’s more of an 80s British punk sound. 2.5

Неплохо, но не впечатлило. Что-то между панком и постпанком, с однообразным вокалом и мелодиями. Еще и сильно затянуто по длине. Но слушать можно. Оценка - между 2 и 3, но ближе к 2

Listened through the whole thing, but none of the songs stuck out. Fun riffs, but won't end up listening to any of the songs again.

This was not completely godawful, but it certainly didn’t give me any positive emotions. I kept wondering when it would be over. Somehow a 37-minute album felt like an hour and a half. The whole time, my only thought was “mehhhhhhhhhhhhhh.” Can’t believe I wasted my morning drive on this shit.

Did not care for this album. I did try to read up more on the mod revival of the 70s to see if I could get more context, but mod seems to be like new wave in the sense that you can label anything you want with that name. Seemed pretty one note to me and I didn't care for their attempts to do a genre shift (English Rose) because it just felt very jarring and strange. Not my cup of tea.

Point off for being British

Being in a band with your mates when you’re a teenager should be a hoot, a chance to lark about and play the music that you love. Judging by the cover of this album, the Jam make it look utterly joyless. This album was part of the late 70s mod revival (only ten years after the actual mod scene) and it feels like they’re approaching the music with exaggerated po-faced reverence rather than any sense of appreciation. Their cover of David Watts by the Kinks takes a cheeky song about a homoerotic schoolboy crush and sucks the life out of it. Even Down in a Tube Station, the big hit off this album, comes across as preachy and overblown (and it really didn’t need 30 seconds of train noises on the outro). The best song on here by far is English Rose, where Weller finally lets a bit of wistful longing into his voice with a nice bit of acoustic guitar and sensitive production.

British invasion meh

bem qualquer coisa né

Their first two albums _This Is the Modern World_ and _In the City_ richly rewarded my revisit. After listening to their third: _All Mod Cons_: what a comedown! It's like the record execs/producer told them to "get serious" and jettison their punk affect. Their songwriting isn't up to it. It's like the Jam on Thorazine or after electro-shock therapy. At the time I stuck it out, get their 4th & 5th albums. I don't remember them. This one should have been the last one for me. I had to go back to those first two albums to remind myself why I liked them in the first place.

it's alright I guess

idk, neither love nor hate it

Overstays its welcome and is boring.

All Mod Cons by The Jam has an energy i appreciate though Paul Weller’s vocals can be to rough for my liking at times so I enjoy the record in parts more than as a whole.

Good English band. Good sound.

Never fussed on the Jam/Paul Weller, never sounded original enough to stand out from other bands. I’m still not, it’s all very similar.

basic boring the trying-to-be-nonchalant sound doesn't match with the lyrics

I can see why people like it but it’s not for Me. Repetitive.

Let’s hope this was worth me stopping my listening of the songs in my Spotify liked list that I have listened to the least, according to Spotify DJ that is. Aaaannnndd I’m more than slightly disappointed. This isn’t what I was hoping for. I can’t even tell you what type of music this is. Sort of, not sell out pop? I don’t know what I expected but it’s not a needle mover for me. Weak vocals, sort of more of a spoken word delivery. No challenging guitar parts or out of this world drumming. It’s simple but falls short of White stripes simple. You could do better with your day. Like listening to your least listened to songs on your liked list. Choice cut: English Rose

This is the second album I’ve had to review from The Jam. It’s fine, I guess.

Very typical of the late 70s, but not in a good way like great 70s bands, more like typical late 70s neighborhood band that dreams of making it big - but never does.

Brit pop at its most mundane.

unmistakable influence on so many bands that follow. i still find it rather boring. I forget which member spawns the creator of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. So, thanks I guess.

Nothing spectacular.

Dull album. Just found out The Jam is more of a singles band than an album band.

Zzzzz seguro esto sono muy adelantado en su momento, pero bueno, un bodrio. Nota: 2.5

Not my jam, but it was fine. Listenable. But if this is all mods can you imagine how boring vanilla is

I was sorta bored by this, to be honest. None of these songs had any particular hook. It just sounded like some bar band.

I've never really been particularly fond of The Jam. Personally felt they lacked the spikiness of other bands of the era - and listening to a full album of their material just kind of showed how one note their schtick could be. Aside from a couple of slower tracks, this all sort of blended together for me.

It's kind of generic 70s rock music, something my white uncle would have listened to back in the day.

70’s music

More mediocre lightweight punk, great. Failed to grab me completely, felt very beige and dull. Even tried a second time to listen a bit more attentative but nope.

Just okay for me, I like some of their more famous songs, but not this album.

Meh except English rose, very peaceful

Nja, det är lite trevande. Det skulle bli bättre.

Staccato punk. Not my jam. But I started my music journey on the back edge of this music. But, I’m a product of the 80s.

Let’s give credit where credit is due. These guys laid the groundwork for bands, like the Clash. However, The Clash did it better. Much much better. It’s painfully obvious that they ripped the Jam off LOL! But it’s just not exciting for me. Bland vocals and the hooks are not hooky enough.

Idk another fuckiny British album. Sick of it 4/10

So glad I’ve finished all the fucking Paul Weller albums. Both of these stars are for ‘English Rose’ which is a lovely song despite the wilfully incorrect grammar.

not my jam 🙂

nahhh not it. One of those bands that was trying to sound like others imo

Another band trying to sound like the Kinks. This one is better than some of the other ones from the 90s.

The Jam always have an unmistakable yobbo flavour but this one feels more like a football hooligan sad because their team lost again than kicking your head in for spilling their pint.

I was excited to get introduced to a band who are introduced as contemporaries of the Sex Pistols and the Specials. They were pretty forgettable, unfortunately. To think they were called punk. Nope.

Not up my street, but not bad. shame it all sounds the same to me

Mildly interesting from a historical perspective but not really my jam.

fine, perfectly acceptable music

Huh [2]

The College Dropout and Good Kid, Madd City are being removed from the next iteration of this list but I assume the policy of including literally every random ass British rock band that had a minor hit song in the 70s or 80s will continue in perpetuity.

I can see this being a new thing back in 1978. This was okay.

I bet there’s like one good song that I’ve heard somewhere on this album. Can’t wait to wade through 30 mins of garbage to find it. Update: nope just generically meh rock music.

It’s fine.

The most I can say about this album is that it was OK. It’s the definition of an “alright” album. The album has an undeniably 70’s feel but it’s the “smooth radio” kind of 70’s that I’m not really a fan of. The kind of music that no drugs were involved in the making off and it lacks that “cocaine-indused-sound” that I love, like Fleetwood Mac and Pink Floyd. It felt more like a post-punk 80’s album at times, falling flat on itself. There was nothing remarkable about this album, it was just music. I’m glad I can say I have listened to the Jam now, as it's a band that always caught my eye, but I’m not overly interested in exploring them further at this time. It’s very dad-clicking-fingers music.

Jeg glemte at skrive noter, og nu har jeg glemt albummet.

A good album as a whole but the individual songs differ to much for me. Some are great while others I can't get in to at all. Very mod-rock-isch with a very British sound all around.

There are some albums that I’m sure were “ahead of their time”, but now that we’re after their time, they sound unimpressive. I think I lack the context for this one because it sounds like forgettable Brit-rock.

Clash coat tail klingerz unite to make an album that sounds like every other English soft punk album! 💩😕👎🏻

Nondescript didn't love it didn't hate it couldn't describe it.

This had stretches where the sound was grating and the police-like but it also had some great tracks that I will extract to playlists for more listening

England. 2 stars.

It was....fine, I guess

Cool jam.

**An ok album, kind of tinny but ok

Another Brit-pop-y sound, with nothing special. Why is this on the list?

I have definitely heard of this band. Never listened to their stuff. Eh, so far this is alright. Not my style.

English Rose // In The Crowd // Down In The Tube Station At Midnight

Didn’t love it but didn’t hate it either. Okay, fine. A high 2 or low 3.

It was ok

Not my favorite. It was ok.

I’ve never heard of this band before. I thought all of the songs were just ok. Not too terrible.

Another British album that did things back in the day, I guess. Doesn't do much for me, though.

forgettable nnn

I thought it was fine but not memorable. Maybe genre fatigue but I could do without it.

Wasnt a tiring listen, but nothing stood out to me 🤷

Pretty unremarkable to me compared to other rock from this era. Some parts sound like the Beatles, some feel like the Clash, all of it is a worse version of that music. Can't see myself coming back to any of this.

Weller's voice is IMMENSELY annoying, in all of its appearances. "Down in the Tube Station....." is undeniably catchy though.

It all kinda sounds the same

A bit muddy at times, too dissonant for me to enjoy

i was so ready to like this. guess i'm a rocker

netter rock, aber keine tollenhighlights

frisch, frech, punkig trotz pop! ziemlich gefällig finde ich, aber ohne packenden hit.

# 268 : I don't love it, I don't hate it. I think Its OK, a good collection of songs, but I probably wouldn't go back to it. Favourite track : Down In The Tube Station At Midnight

As for The Jam’s “All Mod Cons” album, I have to say that I was a bit disappointed… There are several songs by them that I enjoy – and had never heard this album before, so I had a good vibe, so perhaps my expectations were too high… There is nothing wrong with the album, as the recording quality is good, there is decent diversity among the tracks, and most are fairly well-written and performed – it’s just that nothing really grabbed me… “Mr. Clean” was one of the better tracks, and “The Place I Love” was solid – though the part I liked the most was the little throwback musical section that reminded me of the same sequence in “So You Want To Be A Rock & Roll Star” – so points for that, but if that was the best part of the song, well… Best I can do here is a 2, as it was fairly well-done for what it was…

I don't know a lot about this band. But, this is one of those albums where you can just tell they have better albums. I'm gonna listen to their others. If this is their best, I'll be disappointed

Paul Weller does come across as an insufferable prick, but he can write a tune. He can also steal from the Beatles and the Kinks in almost equal measures. Just not enough in this for me. Down in the Tube Station is good.

Diving into The Jam's "All Mod Cons" felt like stepping into a realm of music that I feel I should have been drawn to, yet the reality was quite the opposite. Despite the hype and cult following that this band has garnered over the years, I found myself struggling to connect with their sound. Perhaps it's a disconnect with punk music as a whole on my part—I've noticed a pattern where it rarely captivates me, often leaving me feeling disengaged. Most of the tracks seemed to merge into one mass, lacking the distinctiveness I crave in music. That said, "English Rose" emerged as a delightful exception, offering a moment of unexpected beauty and a break from the uniformity, standing out as a genuine highlight of the album. "Mr. Clean" and "Fly" also offered something a bit different from the rest, providing slight deviations from the album's sound. However, these tracks weren't enough to elevate my overall impression of the album beyond a modest 2-star rating. The scarcity of engaging melodies and the sameness of much of the album makes it hard for me to imagine a future in which this album will suddenly resonate with me. While I believe that some music can indeed grow on you over time, revealing its depths and nuances upon repeated listens, I just can't foresee that happening with "All Mod Cons." My experience with music has taught me that there's usually an immediate hint of potential connection, a spark, even if faint—and unfortunately, I didn't find that spark here. Favourite Tracks: Mr. Clean, English Rose, Fly

I keep saying “forgettable” for a lot of these albums and I’d apologize for it but I can’t remember which ones

This was a decent album. British upbeat new age. They did a pretty good job, the music was crisp and well produced. The drawback is that there wasn’t anything that made me excited. It was easy to enjoy but also easy to forget. Not bad just not worth revisiting. 5.6/10

It's not bad, but I don't understand why this would be anywhere in the top 1000, let alone several others we have listened to. I realize everyone has different tastes but many of these seem to be nothing too special, or groundbreaking. Anyone can make a list.

I seem to be on a roll with 2 stars, so let's continue this.

2/5. It's like watered down The Clash

Rock, Beat, NewWave, 1978 -> 2

Easy listening, nothing objectionable, some groovy tunes. But, generally not super interesting or impressive overall.

Rough vocals I prefer harmony of voices in this era, even in punk

what a coincidence, i was just thinking this list could use even more new wave albums!

Nice melodies but sounds just a bit old.

Boring.

Cor blimey guvnor it's the jam

I listened to it yesterday but I can't remember a thing.

New wave generally isn’t my cup of tea so this doesn’t do much for me but listenable

Not for me.

Not as good

Sounds good, and i can see connections to The Who etc. But 5 minutes after i stopped listening, i couldn't recall a single note.

This album just reaffirmed my distaste for punk rock music. Specifically punk rock from the 70s. There is nothing on this album for me. Sure there are some cool little bass locks here and there... But they seem irrelevant to the whole song. You have a typical Fuck you punk song with boring music and annoying vocals, and then a cool bass fill. Yeah, it's pretty tasty... But why? What is it adding? If anything, to me it screams, this song is only good for 2 seconds, half way through the song. I just don't care for this music. This might sound pretentious, but I'm so happy that I got into good music. Yes, "good" is subjective.. Obviously people love punk, and all to them. But if someone were to show me the Jam and say they're the best artist in the world and its their favourite... I would say "well, they might be your favourite. But you're wrong on how high of a pedestal you put them on." There is just so much better music from this era. I guess I owe punk rock music some credit for putting some angst and aggression into the mainstream. Should I give them credit? Were they the pioneers? I don't know... Maybe? Do I hate punk? Not entirely, but I don't care for it. I'd have given this a lower score if it wasn't for them being slightly more tolerable than their peers of this era. I'm looking at you Sex Pistols.

I forgot I was even listening to this. It is fine but not 100% memorable to me.

Van die classic crappy britse rock 5/10

C'est pas désagréable mais c'est ultra basique, non ? J'ai l'impression que ça a posé des choses qui ont largement été élaborées depuis ; c'est du Clash moins inventif par ex.

This one wasn’t my jam. It wasn’t bad, I just found it a bit… boring. Monotonous, perhaps? Nothing made my ears perk up or made me tap my toes.

Very British, music kind of bland.

This wasn’t a bad album, but there’s nothing really remarkable about it. It was pleasant while I listened but I probably won’t listen to these songs again.

It was fine but sounds a lot like indie/mod rock which isn't my favourite thing

Second album I’ve heard of this band. Very similar style as other album with typical alt brit sound.

Punk, new wave, upbeat, lidt repetititvt

Fikk kje så masse ut av da

Gros meh. J'avais espoir que ce serait mieux.

It was okay

I forgot this album while I was listening to it

I’d read about The Jam in NME & Melody Maker long before I heard them. Then one day, around the time this, their third album, was released, I was spending lunchtime in Chelsea Records. This was an import shop in Pitt St,Sydney. They were having a sale & I picked up the first 2 Jam L.P’s for $2.99 each (at a time when the R.R.P. was $5.99). Couldn’t wait to get them home but was pretty disappointed by them - I really did not like Weller’s voice - & did not bother listening to the band again for a good 5 years - around the time they broke up & Weller formed Style Council. I acquired quite a few of their old singles & realised that they had released some really good ones, most notably That’s Entertainment, which I think is one of the best English singles released in the 80’s. As for this album, I think the best song on it is The Kinks’ David Watts, the first single released off the album, and featuring bassist Bruce Foxton on vocals. I also really enjoy English Rose - a ballad & totally different to the rest of the material here. I first heard the last 2 tracks on singles & they’re fine, but not among my favourite Jam singles. I had not played this album for decades.

I just never liked Paul Weller. Don't like the Jam, don't like the Style Council, don't like his solo 'Modfather' work. Lots of people really dig the Jam, and god knows I have tried many, many times over the past 40 years to understand it. But I just don't. Chalk this up as yet another unsuccessful attempt to get into the Jam. The only Paul Weller track I like is the Kosmos (Lynch Mob Bonus Beats Remix). I think this is because it removes all of his singing and, essentially, all of the song itself. Check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-i8djfurMVQ&t=2s

Just immensely average. Nothing interesting about it. I forgot it as soon as I finished it

I was going to give it three stars, but the use of she instead of her in “English Rose” knocked it down to a two. I liked Fly

Interesting and cerebral. Some cool riffs in here (I’d expect that from The Jam). Enjoyable throughout.

Bit yawny

I listened to it and didn’t thumbs up one song.

Pretty standard album, sounded good

One tone

it’s disappointing how such an interesting backstory can result in such a boring album. this is replacement level 80s pop

This was okay. I'd have liked it a lot more if it had a different lead singer. He does that thing with his voice where it sounds like... I dunno like when goofy does the Yuck Yuck laugh, like you're artificially increasing the size of your pharynx. The Thin Lizzy guy does the same thing and I don't like it. Anyway, the music was pretty good, the lyrics were super repetitive and I didn't like the vocals.

This sounds like British surfing music.

Intetsigende!

promising but didn't stay interesting

Uninteresting 2/5

I'm running out of things to say about all these generic albums. Two prolonged sighs out of five.

A decent track here or there. Nothing remarkable, but pretty felt pretty forward thinking for being in the late 70's

The Strokes definitely took inspiration from the title track, or maybe from the same inspiration as the title track, who knows how far it goes. That was the coolest part of the album for me. A couple decent songs.

Non mi lascia molto...

This is like nice punk. Still not the greatest fan but definitely one of those times I wish there were .5's to rate albums.

Not very interesting

Paikoin kuin maanläheisempi Pulp. Voisi olla enemmän asennetta, jää vähän vajavaiseksi

There are some enjoyable elements, but overall it's meh

i always forget david watts is a kinks song (like many good songs, they sneak about in plain view), that leaves the last cut as the only place they soar the jam is one of those groups who were glorious but sadly only in their singles

Slightly better than the other one, I suppose

Bit shit and boring, shite vocals and some decent guitar x bass melodiez

2.5 stars. Meh. Brit alt punk. Catchy at times but fairly bland. Standout is "Billy Hunt."

Listenable. Wouldn't choose to listen to it. A lot of the songs sound the same, but they did have some slower ballads, etc for a bit of variety. The guys voice was better than most similar bands. 3-4/10

A nice listen. Really didn't blow me away and I'm afraid it will get lost in this experience. Nothing to special for me personally but still a good sounding record.

Didn't inspire much for me.

theres some nice stuff on there but every song sounds the same

Fikk kje så masse ut av da

Sanitized British radio pop rock

It was alright.

Not bad per say, but nothing remarkable jumped out at me. Unfortunately forgettable.

Two brilliant sons, rest less than other of their work.

Doesn't 'jam' as hard as The Jam's other jams

This is super British and super okay.

Eh. Nothing special. British music.

I really wanted to like this because there are some The Jam songs I like a lot, but I couldn't get into it. I like the vocals, but the lyrics and the general cadence didn't seem exciting.

Alright band I guess and not a bad album, but I feel like this list has made me a little numb to this kind of rock. Didn’t really feel anything listening to it….. Idk 2?

More stock British rock, not really into it

I’m really hating British rock

How many boring Paul Weller albums are on this damn thing?

I liked the later Jam music better, and Paul Weller's Style Council even better. You can hear the guitar and bass/drum syncopation that influenced new wave and pop in the 90's. Also you can hear how the Kinks influenced them.

People think Weller is the coolest shit ever and I still can't see it.

I’m starting to think British new wave just isn’t for me

I believe I dislike new wave. I really dislike the vocalist's voice. The only song I liked on the album was "English Rose" which appears to be the most popular song on the album. If I could, I would probably give this 1.5 stars.

Best Song: To Be Someone (Didn't We Have A Nice Time). Very typically classic British rock. Worst Song: In The Crowd. Bit of an overly long jam session that never went anywhere interesting. Overall: Seems like the kind of music that goes over great in a pub as background to a round of drinks, but listened to outside of that context it's just another band on the pile of classic rock, indiscernible from most of the others.

Meh. Nothing here really got my attention. It's fine. Don't love it, don't hate it. 2.5 stars.

Not listened to an album by The Jam all the way through before, as far as I know. I know the singles. Some I love, some I like. I tend to prefer the later, more soul-tinged stuff. I didn’t mind this but I found Weller’s voice a bit same-y after a while, and the constant bass/drums/guitar/vocals configuration runs out of steam for me after a while. The singles still sound great and Weller is without doubt a great lyricist, but I didn’t hear any undiscovered gems in the unknown (to me) album tracks.

kinda meh generic

It was an alright album, but I wouldn't rank it on a list of "need to listen to".

Might as well have been British white noise. I found nothing notable from this album

I really dont know what to say about this one. Its OK, I guess? Decent album, maybe I'm just not into mod stuff. I kept on wishing it was more like the Kinks. - 2/5

literally what I was referring to yesterday but I'll say it again. There does not need to be this many mediocre british rock bands on this list!!

Teilweise viel zu britisch poppig etwas punkigere Momente etwas besser

Never heard about mod revival before and I can say I'm really not feeling it. The songs are pretty lame and the execution is sub-par.

Tylsä, tylsempi, the Jam.
