Reviews (page 6 of 8)

Not terrible. I enjoyed some of the songs.

Fun OG punk

Never heard of them, but I liked the album. A nice surprise this morning,

Solid punk record. I enjoyed listening but its not really my favorite type of music

This is just okay, a bit one dimensional. You've heard one track, you've heard them all. billly huny billy hunt billy billy billy

It’s got some bops!

Love the visual joke of the album cover. Pleasant brit rock, great audio mix and more mature than their earlier counterparts. Favorite track: All Mod Cons (jeez I really love openers..)

Muito bom!

It was fine. I’m gonna out as much effort into this review as British people put into their music. Oh so mid and boring but not necessarily bad just so boring bc that’s how Brits do it bc they love that Queen for some fucking reason… ugh fuck the Brits 3 stars

Texturally, this album is all over the place. There are tracks that have strong Beatles vibes - To Be Someone riffs off Taxman, for example - then there are some weird, angry almost punk stuff like Mr Clean. Also, Weller 'singing' "if I get the chance I'll fuck up your life "is the least threatening thing I've ever heard. Then you've got ballads like English Rose which is pretty, but nothing amazing. Overall its OK.

There's a bit of British rock fatigue here, but I'll do my best to stay objective. This is a cool album, or at least most of the songs are. The other songs tend to melt into the background. The bass lines stand out often, and the album ends with a bang, but other than that it's another punk-y album to go along with the rest.

It’s fine

Too Bri'ish, soothing tho

6/10. Pretty good, yet nothing really stuck out to me as memorable. Oh well

Usually hate the Jam but didn't detest this quite so much.

Quite inoffensive but not a big fan of the Jam

TBH, it never really gets off the ground

Groovy

Overall a good album! Nothing particularly special about it, but energy is good. I like the acoustic guitar in many of the songs and find that the music is pleasant, although sometimes it feels like the artists is singing in cursive (although that might be an accent, I haven’t done research)

The point of singing as a British person is to mask the accent. They really missed the mark there. Other than that decent album with some good vibes but nothing amazing

Overall, I liked the vibe/energy. Favourites were In the Crowd (very relatable song and that reference to baked beans on toast, whaaaaat) and English Rose was beautifully simply and pleasant.

english rose gives oasis and billy idol

Always wary of an album where the cover is the best song

I love this and it’s such an easy listen but it never gets to full on classic for me. One of those records I think a lot higher of before listening, but it’s still real good.

Punk-ish rhythm, some interesting songs

Liked it

Very reminiscent of the "mod" counterculture. Consistent sound throughout the album, didn't change around genres much. Strong closer.

Sounds like the beginning stages of new wave. They also sounds like a Police album which may have been a popular sound back then. Songs are upbeat

The problem with music that is message oriented is that if I can't pay absolute attention, I'm missing most of it.

Very quick listen through, overall mood of the album is good, relatively upbeat tunes for the most part, solid stuff

Like if greenday were in the 70's.

Not my thing.

Very low three, not a bad listen

Felt good minute 1! I liked this. Nothing really stood out, but very of the time. I think I liked the other Jam album we had a little bit more– told the story a little bit better. 3/5

The production sucks, the songs are repetitive, lyrics are alright (nothing to write home about). Ultimately, the whole project feels messy and disorganized. It's got heart, but that doesn't necessarily guarantee quality. I enjoyed it though. 3/5

Pass, not my vibe, it has a good energy to it though and it manages to keep it going the whole way. In The Crowd was pretty good, also the least abrasive.

Decent little album! Not my type of music but I’m glad I listened to it. The final track is a pretty sad story that sadly rings true to this day.

Not bad, but nothing really stood out. I kind of liked English Rose, but other than that just king of meh.

Had never heard of them, I like their sound, very old skool brittish

It was okay. A bit better than I was expecting. Would probably give 2.5 stars.

Didn’t like any songs particularly, but a good British band I remembered seeing a “mods” gathering in Brighton once, remembered that

Decent, didn't stand out

Proppa Bri'ish culture. Enjoyed it but English Rose was defo highlight.

Kinda mediocre British pop like a few other bands. Understand if this was released before the others.

All mod cons - 87 to be someone - 90 mr clean - 71 david watts - 80 english rose - 92 in the crowd - 75 billy hunt - 93 it's too bad - 78 fly - 65 the place i love - 79 a bomb - 95 down in the tube station at midnight - 89

all mod cons and to be someone feels like the start of a romcom with the main girl strutting through london. i like english rose but i prefer to imagine they’re singing irish rose. i wanna listen to in the tube station at midnight in the tube so bad

Good example of the sound from the British Invasion.

Decent, nothing to write home

I already got their newer album Sound Affects before. The song structures of this album make more sense to me. Paul Weller always sings a little flat, but less on this album. So this album is slightly better. But not enough for an extra star. Favorite song: A-bomb on Wardour Street.

Clearly a predecessor to The Clash, but The Clash took their influence and ran away with it. Musically it wasn't too bad, but much of the lyrics we're poorly, or maybe lazily, thought out.

British punk rock, classic tone and some good original songs but not very creative. Good listen though. (70%)

Not bad enjoyed this one.

Good early british pop/punk.

Heard before: some Hidden in the stories about violent punks and economic despair is a sweet ode to London. The mods' tough guy stance isn't the be-all and end-all, it's just a fact of life when you are young, walking the bricks of the city, flanked by your boys, on top of the world without a dime in your pocket. And the urban details here could only be written by someone who loves them. Even the music itself calls back to a specifically British brand of power pop by the likes of the Kinks and the Who: the energy, the hooks, and the sometimes mythical England in which the songs are set. God Save The Queen! Sack The Monarchy! Top tracks: Down In A Tube Station At Midnight, English Rose, To Be Someone (Didn't We Have A Nice Time)

not bad

en tiiä miten hepokatti laitumella konsanaan läpsättänyt vitosta niskaan... sanantoisto britti poppi new wave post punk garbage, noh tällä kertaa toistelee sanoja vähän paremmin kun yleensä... muutama hyvä biisikin siellätäällä, mutta ei liian montaa heh... david watts

I fw it. Singer is cool

Always the next big thing. Never the thing. Weller could have been more of a contender than he was. This album shows why. While he could approach transcendence (Town like Malice for example) he never quite gets there. David Watts lacks a purpose. Why listen to this when you have the original? The jam are tight but not quite supported by the songs. Unlike execrable elvis Weller doesn’t waste the band. It’s more that he’s crushed by the weight of unrealistic expectations. But it’s still a pretty terrific album.

A couple of great tunes - Paul Weller is a fantastic songwriter. English Rose is a very clever modern version in the style of an old folk song. A nakedly, emotional song. Some of this, however, did flag for me and even though English Rose and David Watts and Down in the Tube Station… are absolutely brilliant my interest wained on the others. They were very much a band of the moment, but some songs still stand up.

I've tried getting into The Jam before as they always seemed like a band I should dig, but somehow they never clicked with me. Well, today they finally (mostly) did. Every song didn't grab me, and I liked the slower ones better than the faster ones. The Kinks cover seemed pointless, sounding exactly like the orig. (What struck me today was how much Robert Pollard of GBV fame has been trying to sing like Paul Weller. In fact, if I didn't know better, I would have sworn that some of these songs were by GBV.) Anyway, good stuff. Might even grow to like it more.

Always wanted to like this band more than I actually do. Paul Weller would go on to capture this longing with the Style Council. While this has a definite British vibe it's one that underwhelms me. But it's laying the groundwork for My Everchanging Moods, so good work, lads.

A distinctly British sounding album undoubtedly. Like someone took the 60's rock and pop and put the filter of early punk on it. Down to the Tube Station was my favorite on album.

Lacks instrumemtal variety and often risks sounding one note, which is a shame because the performances are impeccable, and In the Crowd is already one of favorite songs ever.

Average. Indifferent. As if The Clash played without energy.

Nice to listen, but very forgettable

Solid rock album, nothing too special

Not as bad as i originally thought it was going to be. Still, this is jut some standard rock music.

Extremely average album. Exactly 0 standard deviations from the mean. Right at the center of the bell curve.

Pretty average album. I didn’t hate it but nothing really struck me significantly. English Rose was kind of a cool chill song

I didn't expect to like this album, but I was a bit disappointed to find I didn't really think much of it either way. It was a pretty uninspiring listening experience from start to end. In 1978 there was a clear distinction in my class at school between people who like the Jam and people who preferred AC/DC. I was firmly in the latter group. This album brought back some of those memories. The pop-punk-lite songs all sounded rather watered down, although there was the odd flash of something more going on here and there. This was difficult to rate as it wasn't awful, but I wouldn't make an effort to ever listen to this album again. It's probably somewhere between a 2 and a 3, but I'll give it a 3 purely because I do like the last track a little bit more than the rest of this rather pedestrian album.

I liked this more than I thought I would, since I had been recommended The Jam before and didn’t really get it. Favorite song: “English Rose”.

Decent if unremarkable.

Again, this was okay, didn't blow me away for the most part. But the end is really good - the last two tracks are the standouts for me, A Bomb In Wardour Street is a great more punky one, and Down In The Tube Station at Midnight is a bit softer, but it's some really good storytelling. Lifts the album up to a 3.

Listened Before? N Pretty good. Kinda Clash-ish. I liked it okay. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: David Watts

Not at all what I was expecting which was a very good thing lol much more melodic and thoughtful than most punk-ish music from these semi-obscure British bands. 6/10

It was ok

Another average one - not too shabby

upbeat. kind of reminded me of the clash. twas a fun listen.

Another one of those albums that was fine to listen to but I have no idea why I “must” listen to it. These are getting out of hand.

Never heard of them before. Not awful.

S'alright

Decent

This is just another British rock band. Nothing really super special. They're not terrible, but there really isn't anything great about them either. Their guitar licks are alright I guess... Some of these songs feel like they could be done better with a better band, or if someone took a sample from them and created another much better song. This is a low 3/5

Sorta dorky but fun. Backing vocals aren’t exactly Simon and Garfunkel.

I'm not getting lots out of this. I still get why people do, and I like the energy of it, but it's a middling 3 for me. My favourite track (David Watts) is a Kinks cover, although I do also like Down in the Tube Station at Midnight.

first time listening

Dug this album. Punk with melody

Not an album I would listen to. More a collection of short punky songs. Still learning their trade.

Not bad, but nothing stood out.

Nothing notable

I listened to a remaster of this I know, but the recording is excellent. Every instrument is so crisp, and I was glad to be listening on my decent speakers. I enjoyed this quite a lot. I haven’t listened to a lot of new wave so I enjoyed the experience. Stand out track is “Fly” which I thought was great

This is the second record by The Jam I’ve gotten and they’ve both been new discoveries. It’s cool, cool Kinks cover and there are some songs I’ll go back to. I really want to keep discovering them and I’m sure I’ll grow more fond. It’s the type of stuff that is right up my alley but just doesn’t stand out too much.

This album has a weak middle section but there's some solid songwriting on display here.

Proggy britwave punk! Has that prog guitar tone that I hear first and foremost but it's more in line with Brit punk at that time.

Is this the clash without hits? Yes. Not bad.

Just alright. I don't hear what the hype around The Jam/Paul Weller is all about.

Feeling a little punked out at the moment. Maybe later will be a better time to revisit this.

Helt ufarlig halvgammel britisk rock

A fine album, wouldn't seek it out again but didn't hate the experience.

Early pop-punk-rock

Solid British punk, earlier year than I thought it’d be. Didn’t stand out really

Surprisingly decent album, really liked the production value of a heavy rhythm section. 2.5 stars would be more accurate, but I'll round up to 3 because of some great instrumental sections.

Another pretty average British punk album in my mind. There were some parts that were pretty unique but nothing really stood out to me spectacularly. The cool thing though with all of these punk albums is that when they end on my Spotify, Television always comes up as the next song so I get to listen to them.

Felt a bit half arsed think they all needed a coffee at this point.

It's great but there are groups who did it better: The Who, Elvis Costello, The Kinks. The final track sounds like The Clash.

I thought this was pretty enjoyable. Nothing stood out, but a pleasant listen.

Generic Who soundalike. Nothing that really stands out as excellent, influential or meriting of a 'must-listen'. 3/5.

This one felt very average. It's not a bad album per se, but it fails to really stand out to me in general. I enjoyed the ballads/slower stuff more than the 'poppy' songs. I'd probably leave it on in the background if I heard it on the radio. Nothing added to the list, very doubtful that I'll return to this album. 5/10

I've always respected artists that are able to change their styles over time to suit the zeitgeist of the moment. Ones that come to mind are Bowie, Miles and Neil Young. Now it may be a stretch to include Paul Weller with those august names, but I must say he's still immensely talented. IMO, along with the Clash they are two of the best groups to come out of the Brit punk rock movement. The Jam's first single In the City is where they sound like a cross between the Clash and the Sex Pistols. Later they would release their anthemic Eton Rifles, and Going Underground. Paul Weller's latter day material with The Style Council and his soulful solo material is vastly different but equally good. Their third album, All Mod Cons was released when they were transitioning away from punk but it bears all the hallmarks of Weller's excellent song-writing.

Always thought this album was slightly overrated because I don't particularly enjoy the slower numbers like English Rose.

Good sound, but it was just noise.

Genres: Punk rock, mod revival, new wave Formed: Sheerwater Secondary School in Woking, Surrey in 1972 Run time: 12 songs, 37 min 45 sec Yet another short album. It’s an eclectic mix of songs: love, work, and life in general. “English Rose” has over 13.5M plays on Spotify. It’s a very poetic love song but it doesn’t match the feel of the rest of the album. It’s nowhere near as good as “Down In The Tube Station”, which only has 3.4M plays - Strange. As for the rest of album, three of the tracks have less than 1M plays, the others have 1-4M plays. I will not play the album again, but I will be trying other Jam albums. My Rating: ***

Nice punk album. Not very new any more, too much heard and therefore sometimes annoying. But an important time stamp.

Pretty decent british post-punk. Indicative of the genre overall.

Sure why not. 2.6 rounded up to 3

3 stars

Trio. Enjoyed the drums on all tracks. Familiar sounds of the 70's but a bit darker in political notes of working class life and even getting mugged and beaten while riding the "Tube". Vocal reminded me of a Bowie sound. Maybe more members in the band could have enhanced the too simple repetitive bits. They might have been playing for their own gain and I didn't feel like I was encouraged by the sounds to go along with them. Guess it just wasn't anything new under the sun for me. A swing and a miss for me.

The Jam is ok 3

first listen not quite my tempo

Not my style of music, old punk. But this one actually had some catchy and fun songs, solid writing and structure. Enjoyable for sure.

English rosen at it again. Otherwise, when it comes to Paul Weller, I prefer the style council

Always really hard to place The Jams sound. Just had that laddy aggression that XTC and that didn’t. See where they have influenced a lot of Brit pop but way more soulful. Weller is a great songwriter. He was so young as well. As a whole pretty average album though. Like most of their albums. Sot All Mod Cons David Watts A Bomb in Wardour Street Down In the Tube Station 2.5/5

Pretty average, no stand out tracks, 3/5?

mi voto es positivo

3/5 Felt very similar to other British? rock? bands of the era. Nothing stood out for me but also it wasn't cat wailing.

Nothing offensive or exceptional here. Background music at best for me and one note but it chugged along nicely. Can't say I'd relisten but that's okay.

This sounds like an alternate universe where The Ramones sold out and went pop in the 80s. Or if The Smiths weren’t clinically depressed. Not that I dislike it. I’ll come back to this another day.

I fail to hear anything of distinction here, but unlike most of the albums served here at least this one managed background music duties...

Pretty decent. Never heard this before, but they're cool.

Never listened to The Jam. It's all right.

The first few songs were more new wave-y than I was expecting. I was expecting the band to be more high energy punk, but instead we get a band a bit more like The Clash (not that that is a bad thing). A couple of songs did grate on me after a while, like "Billy Hunt" (so repetitive: Billy Hunt, Billy Hunt, Billy, Billy, Billy ARRRRRGGGGHHH!). I like punk a great deal, but this just did not hit me like those other bands do. It just felt more of the same, and nothing was unique there.

This was a pleasant enough rocker but there wasn’t too much on here that hooked me in. I enjoyed “Mr. Clean” and the Kinks’ cover “David Watts” which sounded like more like a Rolling Stones song to me but the rest didn't stick out too much. I see that the album title is a play on words with a double entendre which was kind of clever. To be honest, coming from the US, I never understood the whole Mod / Rocker thing. Anyway, the album was an okay listen but it didn’t motivate me to go on and check out more of the Jam’s stuff so it gets 3 shiny stars.

I enjoyed the album, but nothing is sticking with me after multiple listens. Somewhere between punk and new wave but after a while everything blended together. Moving on...

Not for me

Fun stuff, did not expect it to be this enjoyable

This album is fine--again another English band that I'm not entirely sure needs to be on this list. I had a Paul Weller solo album from the 1990s a while back, and it was not good. This is a lot better. The Kinks cover is pretty fun. All in all, it's fine, but I'm not sure it merits inclusion on this list.

forgettable

Started well. Lost me a bit in the end.

I kinda tended to forget I was listening to it.

Kinda liked it but not super memorable, mostly liked the first song and everything else is ok

Unimpressive but not bad.

Decent album but kinda kept forgetting that I was listening to it.

Solid 3, decent album but I personally wouldn't listen to it again

I like English Rose the best. Of the rest, I enjoy the punkish offerings better than the new wave.

Nothing about the album really stuck out to me. I've heard a couple of songs by the Jam that I liked, but I don't think they were on this album.

Decent listen

Ehh pretty generic late 70s fluff. Nothing really memorable.

very nice not many thoughts just some good stuff best tracks: all mod cons, down in the tube station at midnight, Mr clean

Pretty standard brit punk

Good one. Ahead of its time.

Kinks are better

Pretty good.

Can’t score it too low as it’s all fine, really. Some decent lyrics, some nice tunes, & the production values are more advanced than I expected (i.e. it sounds nice and crisp. It helps that the band is tight, I guess). Can’t score it too high as there aren’t really any standout tracks, just a lot of quite good ones and a couple of underwhelming ones. It would be pretty unremarkable if released today, but I guess it’s not too much of a stretch to imagine it being a milestone release in the 70s.

Actually not bad

I liked this album and was hedging between 3 and 4; it was sort of early new wave and had a lot I liked about it. What clinched it as a 3 is that The Jam have other songs I like a lot more that aren’t from this album

This was good, I did feel I bit bored at the end but other than that I would listen again

Y’know what? I really enjoyed this album. Once I got past the Vocals that is.

trying it but not sure I'm feeling it. Won me over with sweet harmonies but i still dont like it quite

Raw 70s sound, a few tunes, a bit patchy.

Some outlets called it one of the "truly essential rock albums of the last few years" (being late 70s), I'd hardly call it that. All Mod Cons is an ok new-wave/punk album, with definite feeling of coming into a very early 80s new wave sound, but typically British. Best: Billy Hunt Worst: Fly

Another album that's OK, nothing stood out particularly

Good fun punk. Not mind blowing for me but it does what it does well. Plus I like the punny title!

I respected the length and the quickness of this album- it wasn’t overdone but it was very nice and i enjoyed the rock.

There were elements of every song that I liked, but it wasn't exactly what I wanted. I liked the album about as much as I thought I would. Wasn't bad, but wasn't especially notable to me. My favourite song was probably Mr Clean, but no one song particularly jumped out at me.

IT WAS SURPRISINGLY GOOD

Catchy in parts, irritating in parts, but a neat listen.

would be in an early 2000s british movie like that pirates stop motion one. struggling to finish. kay it got better about halfway in. kinda sounds like the smiths lol high school me would have liked this

Pretty good, some bangers, some just drag out too long

Just ok

English guys English accent not bad I'm sure someone enjoys it lol

Good album. One of the first albums I had never heard of.

This is good! They sound like a lot of bands I like. I hear some Clash, some Who, maybe even some Smiths and Elvis Costello. (A lot of those artists were contemporaries of The Jam or came after so it’s probably fair to say those artists took influence from these guys.) I think this is a good album but not necessarily a great one. I’d be curious to hear other Jam albums and see if there’s an even better entry point into their music. The last track — “Down in the Tube Station at Midnight” — surprised me. There are a lot of great details in the music. Makes me want to revisit the rest of the album and see if there are more great songs I missed on the first listen. Highlights: “In the Crowd,” “Billy Hunt,” “The Place I Love,” “Down in the Tube Station at Midnight”

Love the drum sounds and performance. It's a pretty interesting album and I think overall I enjoyed it. The most popular song was also my favorite one of the bunch, "English Rose". I really like how it has these acoustic guitar driven tracks in between the more upbeat ones, like this and also "Fly" (even though "Fly" picks up more in the second half of the track). There's a lot of songs that I liked on this, "English Rose" "In The Crowd", "All Mod Cons" "It's Too Bad" all were nice tracks. I'm going to have to come back to this album I think.

Molto diretto, produzione scarna.

Pretty good post punk album, but ultimately a bit forgettable

70s rock not bad

Perfectly pleasant, but doesn't stay.

Fun new wave punk. Reminds me of the clash

Some fun songs, some annoying. Like the slice of life vignette concept and some of the execution of it.

I’m a fan of The Jam and Paul Weller in particular. But this is not my favorite. In fact, I like what came before and after more than this record. That said “A” Bomb is a great tune, and the David Watts cover is better than the original.

Not bad but not amazing

This was more varied than I had expected. I’d only heard the singles from The Jam so this was a pleasant surprise.

As always some great tracks some OK tracks.

This was pretty good! Almost gave it a 4.

Seemed pretty generic to me, I had a hard time figuring out what's "important" about this album. Last couple tracks are heartfelt and quite serious. And I see what commenters have said about the ode to England being earnest without cringey patriotism.

Mod-punk. Ni fu ni fa.

I enjoyed!

Schönes Album! Aber sticht nicht raus für mich

With plenty of nods to their influences this is a punchy collection. The ideas are sound but the lyrics should have had a touch more crafting.

Never heard of them before. I like it, and no song overstays its welcome. Highlights: In the Crowd, It's Too Bad.

3.7 - Tuneful and upbeat post punk that works as background music for a cool coffee shop or similar space. Standout: “English Rose”

Punk rock. Mod.

Enough energy to jostle a decathlon. Hmm… pretty ok all round,

Ok but was drowned out by work. Not a lot grabbed me.

Quite an enjoyable album, almost want to give it a 4 as it's a solid 3.5 but as I get to the end of this list the reality of listening to this again in the near future is slim. Fave: Down In The Tube Station At Mdnight

Good stuff, didn't love

Late 70s rock with harmonies, interesting. I didn't expect that! Well I like the harmonies but kinda over the 70s guitar sound. Nice melodies and lyrics though! 3

I'm a sucker for new wave, so I baseline enjoyed this album. I liked the hints of punk that were sprinkled around, as well. English Rose was a surprising track on this album, and very beautifully done. Overall, this wasn't incredibly remarkable for me; I did not find it to be a particular standout.

It was fine. Pretty generic sounds and wasn't really that entertaining. It reminded me of The Who a bit but not as good.

I'd forgotten how good The Jam were. Powerful bass-driven rhythms and decent lyrics. Quite a variety of tempo and style on this album.

I appreciate the punk-lightness of this. Sort of like a 70's/80's Blink 182.

Cool album

Decent... fax

A good non-punk but still hard late 70’s rock album. It didn’t have the overdone punk sneer of that era.

Unexpectedly upbeat.

Very British. Never heard of it before. Definitely wasn't mind blowing, but not bad.

Enjoyable but not sticking in my head much.

British kinda punk.

I once conned a Mod into thinking I was not going to murder him, but I totally did. I ate his goat for dessert. All mods own goats.

All mod cons English rose

Not bad, not as good as Sound Affects

This album took a little longer to come online for me than I'd like, but it does have a rocking back half and the softer stuff in the middle was really strong as well.

Fairly good. Not something I'll ever revisit, but I thought it was enjoyable enough. Some of the songs are pretty samey, but at least they're not annoying. Wikipedia says this is punk, but I don't hear it (except for the last song) - it's actually pretty poppy. Reminded me of The Who and weirdly enough Weezer on certain occasions. Favorite songs: David Watts, Billy Hunt Pretty strong 3/5.

Some great songs, some less memorable. Still a very capable album.

Nothing stood out to me... but I also didn't hate it... Meh meh meh

Interessante e leve, punk com bastante melodia.

David Watts and English Rose are great tracks, and the rest of the album is alright. Solid 3.5

Three stars. Good, but not great, best song last for some reason, not their best album

Solid rock with punk elements with some nice slower songs (English Rose, Fly) A lot of the songs do seem to merge together though in my mind

Strong start to the album. Love the first 4 songs especially the bass. Lost a bit of interest later on.

This was meh. They have 1 good song, thats spread out between 12 songs. like too much bread and not enough butter.

The Jam and a Paul Weller album in the same week. Interesting. It's an OK album. The good songs are pretty damn good but there are several just okay ones the went by without being very memorable. The good outweighs the bad here so I will give it a 3 while I still pine for half star options.

Liked it :) Rating: 6/10

It's good for what it is.

Not terrible, just boring.

It sounded like generic English punk but what do I know. I liked it though. Didn't really have any songs I LOVED but overall it was a good vibe

Artistic Freedom. Do what you want. But just make sure that everything is very Mod I'll tell you what, I got you sussed You haven't wasted my time, this listening time was fun

Down in the tube station at midnight still my favourite Jam song.. not so keen on the rest…

i cant believe food copied their name from this band! i smell a lawsuit coming soon!

Didn’t like it as much as sound effects

While nothing here really grabbed me, it's a good listen all the way through.

It was alright. Not really memorable.

I enjoyed this album. I associate the sound with the 80s, so it’s interesting to me that it’s from 1978. They seem to be a connecting link from 60s Britpop to many modern genres.

Non-distinct

Fun but standard English rock album

Just more Brit-pop / rock. Like a less interesting version of The Clash, sorry

It was an alright album, the music itself had a nice beat, but it wasn't entirely my style.

Not bad, sounds a little like Elvis Costello. I probably listen to this again.

Mod-punk. Ni fu ni fa.

I was surprised it didn't have any of the big hits but it still holds together well as an album. Better than I expected.

3.5/5. You know, it wasn't all that bad. I don't always like punk but this album was alright.

Hints of The Police, Joe Jackson, and The Clash. This sound has a little bit for everyone. If you're hardcore punk, new wave, alternative, or mainstream, then this album won't do much for you. If you are, like me, somewhere in between, then you give it three stars for who they were influenced by and for who they influenced.

First listen, totally unfamiliar with The Jam. The music is energetic, straightforward, and sunny, reminds me of some of the harder-rocking stuff from the British Invasion (they do play a Kinks song on here, after all). The lyrics are often angry or dissatisfied, which makes a nice contrast. Very good pop sense in terms of melodies, good hooks, and clear song forms. Highlights: "English Rose," "Billy Hunt," "Fly," "'A' Bomb in Wardour Street," and "Down in the Tube Station at Midnight".

old school british punk

A fun album. Didn't absolutely love it, didn't dislike it. 3 feels right Saved: To Be Someone (Didn't We Have A Nice Time)*

Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Billy Hunt, It's Too Bad, Down In The Tube Station At Midnight Cutting Edge: To Be Someone (Didn't We Have A Nice Time) Overall Notes: Kink-y punk rock, though that seems to be by design seeing as there's the David Watts cover on this thing (I prefer the original Kinks version). Higher floor but lower ceiling than some of those Kinks albums have. This one gets a low 3.

Great bass and some cool punk moments but the mod stuff isn't really my thing. I wouldn't complain if this was on but wouldn't choose to have a long listen. Glad it didnt have those overplayed singles on though

Not bad at all, especially compared with the mass of early 80s crap I've been getting "randomly generated" lately.

This was okay.

David watts and Billy hunt, two interesting songs! Good punk album too

Nice 70s style álbum, never heared about the band before

70s UK punk rock. Its fine but didn't really stand out to me.

70s punk rock, all the songs sounded pretty similar but not bad

engraçadinho

pretty good, i like this genre reminds me of some like parquet courts or something i liked 'english rose', 'in the crowd', kinda just the middle of the album got some good songs there

Pretty ordinary, nothing much special.

More poppy and less punk than expected.

British, So British, and highly melodic. Paul Weller is the genius here, But I enjoyed the abilities of rhythm section. I can totally sense a lot of influences on the 90s Britpop movement. 3 stars because not really my cup of tea.. but a great experience.

It’s fine, not as good as some of their others

Decent New Wave album

Another album that doesn't really 'pop'. Not thát bad, though.

This album is so british, I wouldn't be surprised if album cover was tea-stained.

Felt pretty cool listening to this while driving around running errands. I dig it. Made me want to listen to the Killers and weirdly the Allman Brothers?

Pretty good, actually. Definitely can see the influence on other British punk bands that came later.

Well, I guess I am a Paul Weller fan now. Really liking the melodic punk sound. Like The Clash, but easier to listen to.

Quite enjoyed this but expected better. Big fan of Compact Snap when I was younger so knew a couple of songs but the ones I didn't know didn't grab me as much as I hoped. Will give it another go.

"David Watts" Released: 18 August 1978 "Down in the Tube Station at Midnight" Released: 13 October 1978

Classic British punk album. I enjoyed this.
