Reviews (page 8 of 14)

Still sounds sweeping and impressive all these years later. (Saying that, I'd be happy never to hear With or Without You and I Still Haven't... ever again; they're so overplayed.) The album was important to me during some upsetting events in 1987, and I'm still moved by most of it. Favourite tracks probably Red Hill Mining Town and Running to Stand Still. Where The Streets... still makes me want to roll down the windows on a freeway somewhere. Overall, it deserves its status; it was everything that the previous 4 albums had been building up to.

It’s aged as well as I have 😁

I own the vinyl cos it was my brother’s. But I’ve never listened to it all the way through. I suspended my disbelief and enjoyed it. Fave track - In God’s Country

Hmmm... this album starts so strong with an absolute bang and then loses steam in the 2nd half. Way too front loaded which made me be like meh in the 2nd half. Nonetheless, I Still Havent Found What I'm Looking For is a top 5 favourite song of mine so that counts for a lot.

I’ve gone from “I hate U2” to “This is one of the best albums ever”. Perfectly built. Well executed but the B-side wants more action. Front loaded. 4.5/5

Listened to this all lot when I was younger.. like 3 or 4 excellent songs.. the rest smeh! But yea first 3 songs are unbelievable.

Starts out STRONG then tapers a bit but sill pretty damn good overall.

i get why my dad loves them en the vibes was good i like to listen to it again

It's fantastic.

4,5 viele geile songs drauf, gut zum anhören, immer wieder gerne

Die ersten drei Songs nehmen auch gleich das Podest ein. Gutes Album, gefällt mir. 8.3/10

Transcends language

I liked its sound a lot. Repetitive but engaging throughout their whole length. Lyrics seemed cool too but I wasn't listening too closely. Will definitely listen to this one again

One of the best three song opening of any album ever?I like U2, sue me. 4/5

Good shit

nice 4*

The hits are huge, and the non-hits are good. It is a very good album.

The band many love to hate, myself included at one time for no good reason other than jumping on a bandwagon (I think part of that was Bono’s seeming self-righteousness and the try-hard overtly political attitude of the band). Honestly, this is the first album from the band I’ve heard in full. The first three tracks are familiar through radio exposure. I still quite enjoy them. I read one review referring to Bono as marble-mouthed, and there are moments here that I found that description apt, though other times he’s clear, with his voice sounding unique and powerful in its own idiosyncratic way. Love the jangle and bombastic flare of Trip Through Your Wire. Love the intensity of the closer Mothers of the Disappeared. Love the sincerity of the music and the lyrics. Overexposure and success can be deadly for sincerity, but there is nothing wrong with a musicians/artists that care and take their art seriously.

Where the Streets have No Name, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, and With or Without You is a U2 all-timer first 3 songs. After that actually the songs are kinda just okay though...

Great album, definitely deserves it's praise. I just don't really feel the sad mojo right now and that is absolutely everything this album has to offer.

Starka spår!

Good record, some classics.

Something that has always confused me, especially as of recently, is just how massive U2 is. They had one of the highest grossing world tours ever, are one of the highest selling rock bands ever, and currently have a residency at one of the most impressive music venues ever built. They are also the first band to ever play at that venue. Their fame is so immense, it kind of blows my mind. And for some reason, I was so ready to hate this album. I didn't want to like it. But it is undeniably a really great 80's alt-rock record. The only way it can really be described is massive. It's stature and presence is almost overwhelming, and these songs were built for a big stadium like the Sphere in Las Vegas. Plus, any album Brian Eno has his hands on is probably destined to be a classic. Songs like Without or Without You take their time to build up, and have these beautiful moments of crescendo spread throughout. But there are other songs like Bullet the Blue Sky that feel more traditional. Trip Through Your Wires is a straight up rocker, with this loud ass Bob Dylan-esque harmonica that comes in part way through. Rating: 8/10

I always thought U2 was a little overrated, but this album really is incredible. The first half is much better than the second, so the rating drops a little, but still a high 4.

Probably their best album.

Some of their greatest hits on the album, nice!

Feels like a complete album, maybe a bit dramatic too dramatic at times but overall very good

Great album

This morning I poured myself a massive bowl of Alpen and grabbed the daily express and stuck this on. It did fade for me towards the end a bit but still held my attention. I thought it was really good in all. Bono is still a twat but I can see now why he was successful enough to have Britain's largest collection of hatchbacks

Unbelievably good. I’ve not listened to this album since I was a kid. I have been a bit meh on the U2 front for a couple of decades, infuriated by the cult of Bono. This was a fantastic reminder of why people care so much about this band. I could listen and listen. What an opening!

There were a few songs that I would sing along to, but for the most part it is a really good album to have while driving and having a conversation. Makes you feel like you’re in the breakfast club.

This goes a lot harder than I remember. Kinda forgot U2 aren't a joke band

great - at the time

Classic album.

I came into this thinking it would be a solid 5 star album. I have to say I was a bit disappointed. The first few songs are crazy strong, but the rest is kind of forgettable to be honest. I am a quite big fan of U2's music, but a realization has dawned on me that they are quite uneven. It's really only their best songs that are good, the rest are not that interesting. Lucky for them they have quite alot of smash hits across all of their albums, but when looking at this album as a whole it fell short of other albums I've given 5 stars.

I'm not really a fan of U2, it's just not really my jam. Going into this I wasn't too exited but I was positively surprised. Man is this album front-loaded with hits. An extremely strong start with "Where The Streets Have No Name", "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" and "With Or With Out You". Although none of these song rank particularly highly for me I can't deny they are good songs and work good following each other. The rest of the album fizzles out a bit but i still didn't think it was bad. While not an album I think I would put on all that often I still think it deserves a 4.

Almost an antique at this point

Although I’m not a huge U2 fan, this is an undeniably solid album! First five songs are very strong, with the second half of the album petering out to a more mellow, ballad feel. Could have benefited from reordering the tracks to keep the energy up. Fav songs: I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For and Running to Stand Still.

Starts amazingly strong, solid all the way thru

Everything I listen to this album I'm always expecting it to ne back to back bangers but then I realize aside from with or without you, haven't found what I'm looking for, where the streets have no name, and like bullet the blue sky, the rest the album is kinda forgettable and sounds pretty much the same.

Have to say the opening of this album is great, has a really nice beat and tempo about it. Altho this album didn't feel like it was anything special it was still a nice listen. It has a really nice 80s rock feel about it as well. I'll forgive them for infiltrating my ipod back in the day.

This gets 4 stars for the first amazing 4 songs. The rest of the album is not nearly as great

Classic

Some say that all U2 songs sound the same, and while I disagree, I do see their point. Along those same lines, though, you could make the point that The Joshua Tree is just a cohesive album driven by U2’s signature sound. The record has one of the best 1-2-3 punches of any in history with the slow buildup in “Where The Streets Have No Name,” the adventurous background melody in “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” and Bono’s vocal range in “With Or Without You.” Unfortunately, the list of songs that lasted on the radio waves ends there. Either way, it’s impressive to think that the band recorded this album in their mid-twenties after over ten years working together. Aside from the harmonica of “Trip Through Your Wires,” The Joshua Tree is not exactly an album I’d associate with the American Southwest; the Eagles and America had that locked up in the seventies. The quiet intros to several of the songs don’t pair well with a jet engine in the background, but that’s my own fault. While there are only three real hits, the album works well as a whole. I can’t give it five stars, but it’s close.

It is absurd how good the first three songs on this album are, but the rest of the album is so-so. Too much harmonica. Although I remember those three songs were everywhere when it was released when I was a kid, so they’re a little overplayed and worn out for me.

Another pleasant surprise! Songs I’d been tired of hearing I was more than ready to hear again. I do think the singles are a little better than the rest of the songs. Fun fact: the song One Tree Hill inspired the batshit crazy TV show. Another fun fact: my freshman year roommate would put this on when entertaining the ladies

I thought I gave U2 a fair chance in college and I did not like them. I haven’t actively listened to them since and was not excited when it came up today. I listened and really liked it! I’m surprised to say that I may need to give this band another shot.

Admittedly, I’ve always kinda scoffed at U2 and will likely continue to do so. That being said, I’d never give t The Joshua Tree a fair shake. It’s a solid album, there’s a cool atmospheric vibe to it. The Edge has a cool approach to guitar on this one, the way he’s playing on some tracks almost sounds splashy, if that makes any sense. Wish they put a pit more focus on the grunge sound that they showed on Bullett the Blue Sky. Trip Through Your Wires was another one I hadn’t heard before that I enjoyed, nice harmonica and frantic guitar, it was good. One Tree Hill was pretty lame but this is a good album. 4 stars

This is the only U2 album you ever need to listen to.

Way better than I thought it would be

Great album and one I’ll be listening to again. Feel it loses energy towards the end of the album and some songs I’m less keen on. Probably a 4.5 if I could award that.

Très très bon album. Il manque une petite touche de magie pour que je mette 5 et parce que je suis difficile.

For decades, I’ve harbored what I can only describe as a bias against U2, dating back to junior high. I couldn't explain it, but the mass appeal felt like a form of social engineering, where expressing dislike for the band was met with confusion and could even strain friendships. Just try saying "I hate U2" in the presence of exactly two people and you might be attacked! While their music has been an unavoidable fixture of pop culture—they were, after all, the first to play the Las Vegas Sphere—I have slowly warmed to them. I found "One" to be a singularly impressive track and even appreciated their work in the early 2000s with "Vertigo." But it was their foundational, household-name-making work that I could never grasp. This album, specifically, has always eluded me. Listening to The Joshua Tree deliberately for the first time, I can no longer deny its immense, cinematic drive. "Bullet the Blue Sky" is the track that truly resonates—a brilliant, searing piece that cuts through any preconceived notions. I suppose the band has finally worn me down, but the appreciation is genuine; the album’s atmospheric rhythms and the sheer conviction in Bono's voice are undeniably transportive. Perhaps it's the passage of time that allows for this perspective. Like a younger Bono, I once might have dismissed this as "unpunk," but decades later, it's clear this epic, earnest sound is exactly what U2 was destined to become.

If there's a U2 album worth owning, this is it.

Nice listen, couple of classis on it. Never listened before

Gotta thank Kate K for cluing me into one of my all-time faves so I can skulk in and drop a review. The way this album starts always made me think of being underground in a big pipe - that hollow, metal sound - and then suddenly I'm at church, kneeling, waiting for mass to begin, with the quiet, serene organ reverberating across the vacuous sanctuary. I love the diversity of the songs on this album. It shows the broad range of influences on them, their own unique sound in different kinds of songs. The delay effect is synonymous with U2 and any other song that uses it can't escape the association (for better or worse). I love how the Edge's guitar groans as the "city groans" in Bullet the Blue Sky and how the drums sound like gunshots and how it sounds like it was recorded in a tiny basement room. These good Irish Catholic boys' beliefs come through (every Catholic carries the cross of one's shame). Running to Stand Still is the most haunting to me--that harmonica is so sorrowful. One of my bucket list items was to see U2 live. Brian gave that to me when they went on their Joshua Tree tour. As cheesy as it sounds, it was the closest I have come to a religious experience -- not in a religious sense, but in a spiritual, other-worldly sense, where you feel like you enter some kind of buzzing, perfect zone. My ears rang for a couple of days - one of the loudest shows I've ever been to. It was all I hoped it to be and more. So yeah...had to come back here to give it a solid 4.

The first three tracks on "The Joshua Tree" have you hoping that its a star-scale-breaking greatest-of-all-time album. Those three songs are untouchable. But "Bullet the Blue Sky," while not a bad song, doesn't fit the album. After that, there is a nice run of impressive Americana/folk rock for some lads from Dublin, but things drag a bit towards the end. Ultimately, the promise of "Where the Streets Have No Name," "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," and "With or Without You" only led to a bit of disappointment.

Finally, this website is talking U2 to me. This band gets a lot of flack, but they have a lot of great stuff attached to their name. The Joshua Tree is one of their strongest. You can't go wrong with their roaring stadium anthems, and even though there's a little bit of a lull somewhere in the middle, things pick back up by the last third. And then it ends with two quiet but amazing tracks - the dark and brooding Exit, and the beautiful Mothers of the Disappeared. A nearly perfect album! Besides those two finishing songs, standouts are Where the Streets Have No Name and I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For. Obviously.

.5 more for having my name in it 3.5

Good. U2 has a weird sound for me cause they’re a meme in my mind. Bono mainly. Think it’s cause we listened to them so much as kids. But the album is solid, and they’re sound is pretty distinct compared to most. Plus they have some bangers. Can’t deny they made solid music here.

Orribile!

Find, I begrudgingly admit that u2 can occasionally do some great stuff

always thought I didn't like U2, but I really enjoyed this album. 4

Those first three tracks really cement their status as rock stars. They're soaring and expensive and bring to mind vast landscapes and stadium concerts. The rest of the album has some high points but doesn't quite reach those same heights as the singles.

I know the back half is weak, but the front half is nothing short of euphoric. More than balances out the overall quality.

Much as I hate to admit it... This is actually a pretty good album. I mean, U2 are universally accepted to be awful. Bono is a giant turd. But "with or without you" is annoyingly good. And it isn't the only good track on there. I'd say that this is one of those ones where you really want to dislike it. You really should dislike it. But it's just good enough to surmount the hill of U2 being shite.

Good! didn’t know anything about U2 music wise but it was pleasantly good!

Mostly good. I really liked some of these songs, but a few missed the mark for me.

This is the last album of theirs I really like. It builds on the raw sounds of their early music without going over the top, like their later stuff.

I didn't care for this when it came out. Scratch that. I didn't care for Bono when this came out. I still don't. But man, the hits truly are astounding on here. And so are some of the album tracks. But it's also two tracks too long, and when it misses, it makes me want to slap Bono upside the head. Still, I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. The Edge's sound is so epic here.

The first three tracks are obviously the standout ones here and are some of U2's best. All three have the potential to be the best U2 song for me depending on the mood I'm in that day ("Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "New Years Day" are probably my solid top 2 U2 songs now that I think of it), so it's really an impressive way to start an album. I think this is album is where they started to define more of their more recent/modern sound, like more diversity in Bono's lyrics (with more positivity), and the really unique guitar style of the Edge coming through in all of it's tremolo reverby echoy goodness. Unfortunately tracks 4-11 are just no where near as monumentally good as the first 3. It's like the band knew this and really front-loaded the record to make sure that people wouldn't give up on it and not get to the good ones if they were more spread out. It's kind of a shame because that really solidifies this as a 4/5 for me and if it had maybe 2 more songs of equal quality to the first 3 tracks then it would easily be a 5. The rest of the songs aren't bad at all, but they are just not in the timeless realm as the first 3. Still an amazing record though.

I've never been a fan of U2 and never understood why they were so popular. This album helped me understand a little bit. It was quite good.

BIG important 80s album when I was 13. Absolutely loved this LP. Still sounds good. Hard to find a better first three sonhsshit singles on an LP that isn’t a Greatest Hits compilation!

Reading about this album, it’s consistently rated as one of the best ever made. I can definitely see how good it is but the singles on here have been used in so many commercials it’s staggering.

Classic!

Nostalgia maybe? Great album. But, over time I find less and less of a need to listen.

Starts off so strong with the first three songs and keeps going strong till the end.

I’ve mostly ignored U2. But this is a solid album.

Classic U2

This was awesome! I’m not big on U2, as like many, I find them insufferable pompous buffoons. However, take nothing away from this album. It’s a classic for a reason! The opening three or four tracks are up there with the best opening to any album ever.

I don't know why, but some of these songs, while high-quality and enjoyable, rub me up the wrong way. I furiously stopped listening to this album on first attempt - it was song 5 which sounded too similar to the first 3... This album made me invent a new entry on the scale - an angry 4: it's too good for a 3, even if it leaves me frustrated at times. Highlight: Bullet The Blue Sky

Pierwsze trzy to kwintesencja u2, reszta ok

Great atmosphere and guitar sound, good dynamics. Sometimes Bono’s a bit much for me but when he wants to be he’s an incredible vocalist. Album starts off extremely strong before tapering off through the middle, but overall this is pretty excellent. Best song: I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For

Classy. I liked the more toned down tracks a bit more.

I was blown away.

Can clearly hear the influence on other bands I enjoy. Good album.

Good album. Lots of hits on side a

This may be the strongest string of starting ballad tracks on any album. But, the rest of the album falls a bit short after such a strong start. Both of my parents absolutely love U2 so this one has a strong nostalgic factor for me.

I like this one, but it lost me a little bit in the middle. Man I just feel like singing along to the first three tracks. A mix of “stadium” rock, post punk and folk. I like Bono’s voice. I wouldn’t say it’s technical but it is very expressive and unique. Also like the guitar tone, crisp sound with a lot of delay, and the playing is mostly rhythmic. 1/2/3/10

Not a massive U2 fan, but this is a good album. Best songs: Still haven't found, streets have no name. with or without you. Slightly fades towards the end.

One of the most front loaded albums I've listened to, but was quite happy with the rest of the tracks after the three heavy hitters where out of the way. Will come back for more listens to further my education.

U2 wrote some of the most iconic singles of the 20th century and three of them - the first three tracks - are on this album.

Strong 7

Excellent overall and extremely well made. It feels very much in earnest and is completely accessible, if not their edgiest, angriest or even most authentic work. Indeed, this is state of art, late '80s with decent range from "One Tree Hill" and "Tripped" to "Bullet the Blue Sky" and the quietly powerful "Running to Stand Still." A mature and confident band operating near the peak of its powers, which are not to everyone's taste, one understands (especially as Bono has grown well-nigh insufferable down the years). Last few cuts represent a weak ending, or at least a significant drop from the extraordinarily strong first 8 of 10 cuts. But one can't quibble about the big hits being overrated (primarily because they're no longer so overexposed) or too obvious. One's even sensitive to Greil Marcus argument that U2 is just kind of boring. But what he misses is the compelling and earwormishly hookiness of Edge's approach and power of Bono's voice (overpowered by excessive commitment though it sometimes is). Even if not quite as good War, Boy and Unforgettable Fire (one's personal faves), this is awfully strong overall.

Nothing but good vibes with this album. Been a memorable piece in prevalent instances throughout my life. In 5th grade me and my teacher Mr. Swanson used to talk about this album along with other parts of U2’s discography. It’s also the album I put on during a certain point in a trip to Indiana beach that Mike would know about.

I haven't heard this album in a long time. Obviously, the singles are still playing on the radio every time I get in the car but as a whole album, it's been a WHILE. I've never been a big U2 fan anyway, although I really liked the singles from Achtung Baby. It's also worth noting that U2 is one of those bands that's kinda changed along the way a lot, so when you heard them first makes all the difference. Achtung Baby was my entry point; I was a bit too young for this one. So it's always been the older, softer stuff in syndication... if that makes sense. Ok, I like it a lot more than I remember. The cool delay/reverb/echo that THE EDGE just put on fucking everything... you'd think it'd be overkill, but somehow it's not. It's a bit long, dragged on towards the end. It's actually... kinda amazing any of those songs became hit singles. I recognise all the non-single tracks, too. Didn't think I was that au fait with U2. This is an easy 4/5 and I'll listen again for sure. Am I getting old and boring? I turned 39 the other day, now I'm genuinely enjoying a U2 album. Might as well start blending all my meals now lol.

*The Joshua Tree* is the perfect example of a good album that just missed being great by a hairline. It opens with three legendary tracks suggesting this is the band's magnum opus. To be fair, many hardcore fans of U2 believed it was indeed a magnum opus at the time it came out, but go only a couple of years ahead, and it quickly dawned upon you the album didn't age that well, at least with everything that was happening in the music world at the turn of the nineties... The thing is, everything after the first three "hits" in *The Joshua Tree* sounds like a *relative* letdown today. Good songwriting overall, but the dynamics of the album never make you reach the heights you started with again. What you have instead is Bono literally preaching to his flocks, inspired by Americana and its grand, self-serious themes. And depending on my mood, I can grow a little weary of such a routine... U2 made two other very good albums during their long career: *War* and *Achtung Baby* (plus *Zoopropa*, a weird outlier not worthy of this list, yet still containing some interesting "experiments" in it). And each of those records pretty much have the same relative flaws and undeniable assets: they can boast of legendary tracks that will remembered for a long time, but those tunes are also mixed with cuts that are only *good*, and not truly stellar. Just like for *The Joshua Tree*, those albums are 4/5 LPs for me (they're 9/10 records in a way, but I want to focus on the truly "essential" albums for my own selection, hence why I'm so harsh in my current grading). So I will include the three albums in my list, because we're still talking about an iconic band here. But they'll probably at the bottom of it. In other words, I'm glad those records were made, and I'm happy for the fans. But I can live *with or without them*, in a way. 😉 Number of albums left to review: 587 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 199 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 93 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 123

I don’t like U2, or more specifically Bono but I have to admit this was, overall a great album. Some of their tracks are anthemic, the rest were mostly good so an almost reluctant 4* from me.

Great album! The hits are my favourites, especially With Or Without You.

My second favorite U2 album, after Achtung Baby. Joshua Tree is about America

Amazing U2 album.

Exactly what I expected from U2 - not that it's a bad thing, I love the first three songs on this album. I definitely wasn't expecting to hear more of a hard rock sound in "Bullet the Blue Sky". Even songs that I didn't think I'd like at first ended up growing on me

Favoritos: -Where the Streets Have No Name -I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For -With or Without You -Exit

Definitely front loaded with the best songs, but this is a solid pop album that deserves its reputation as a classic

Bono is a twat. However before they became stadium gods they made their greatest album with Eno. It is cinematic and is a highlight ( with the Pixies and Joy Division) of the eighties....I think the second side is greater. It is a bit pompous ar times but I feel it would be harsh to downgrade. I feel torn between 5 and 4.

A lot of the songs sound the same. Not saying it’s bad

I really like this album. For whatever reason I haven't been able to get into more U2 than Joshua Tree, but I always enjoy listening to this one. 4/5

Great album. Stunner at the beginning

Some great U2 classics on this album. Might be their best front to back, leaps and bounds better than the album stuck on everyone's iPod.

Mixed bag here, found that the hits off the album were great. Some of the tracks I hadn’t heard were better than some of their well known hits. Overall didn’t find it amazing but better than average

I2 before Bono went up his own ass

That opening trio takes some beating, huh? To be honest I was expecting more from the rest of the album. I think U2 at their best are great, and I was fully ready to hail this as the masterpiece many people say it is, but I don't think all the tunes quite match the obvious ambition. Having said that, I did discover some new tracks I like (Bullet The Blue Sky, In God's Country), and the others grew on me after a while, so maybe I'll call it a near-masterpiece... One Tree Hill the song isn't as good as One Tree Hill the TV show, though. 4.5

The album that marks the coming of age of U2 (as well as its Americanisation). Those first 4 opening tracks pack a mean punch!

this is a great album. so many good songs. also played some of the live versions on the deluxe album and they were also great.

Classic album with plenty of hits

A bit rambly, but nicely atmospheric. First several songs were instantly recognizable

Hate an amazing first 4 songs. It is a great album. A very nearly 5 star for me.

Epic, incredible, but hard to look at objectively, because it dominated the airwaves, mtv, everything, for so long. It is now, sadly, just very enjoyable.

7/10 pretty decent, but u had to be there I think

7/10. A classic put all the hits at the beginning album. Still pretty enjoyable, though.

Lands squarely in the middle of Pearl Jam and Cold Play in terms of arena music sound. Couple of iconic songs. 7/10

Forgot about u2.

The first half is just solid perfect pop - not one missed song, and it makes this an instant classic. It's long because it's from the Compact Disc era I guess, but it's undoubedtly a great great album, even if I am not quite a fan of U2.

I remember being blown away by this album when it first came out. But now? Honestly some of the guitar work still sounds great, but it is hard to escape the gnawing sensation that Rattle and Hum is on the horizon.

This record’s only fault is being so good that it has been played to death.

I'm not a U2 fan but it's hard to deny the epic nature of this album. Side 1 is incrediby strong with 3 perhaps 4 absolutely iconic songs. Side 2 lets up a little but not much and certainly not enough to diminish its power. This is the album that announced U2 as the biggest band in rock and roll since Led Zeppelin. 4.5 stars

Look I know it's a classic, but a lot of tracks don't really do it for me here. I found this album to be great but not excellent. It drags a bit in the end, especially the 2 last tracks. However, I recognize that the hits here are great and that the production of the album is stellar. 7,8/10

Excellent album with some absolute bangers

Nothing against U2, I’ve just never loved them. 3.5 stars

Nice album, I really like the strong basslines, the overall atmosphere is quite nice. I think it's a good album full of strength, I also knew some of the songs before. 4 / 5

Good album. Probably a classic

Bono is insufferable. With that out of the way, this album is iconic and when I think "stadium rock" I think of U2 and a lot of the songs on this album. I am not exactly a U2 fan, but this album is extremely influential and I get it, I can imagine a live show would be quite an experience. Also, that 3 track start is so strong that everything else falls flat in comparison, it's almost unfair to the rest of the songs.

I'm not a huge U2 fan, mostly because of their album or whatever that happened with Apple way back in the day where the songs were everywhere. Little place called Vertigo? I was a sucker for that song. But this is the album I always think about with them. I think mom and dad had a copy, but opening with Streets Have No Name, Haven't Found What I'm Looking for, and With or Without You, puts this already as a really good album. The other songs aren't as memorable but they are still good. I'd say these last few albums this week have made up for last weeks.

Damn, here's a classic. "Do you know where the name of the band U2 comes from? It's the Untalented 2." I don't know the full U2 catalog, but I know this album is a huge one. The first four songs in a row are just so great. I can hear the influence that this had on a lot of other bands; Angels & Airwaves and Linkin Park come to mind. Not a whole lot I can think to say here, just that this is a great album. They're a band that I think has had a fluctuating reputation over the years, especially after the free album fiasco, but you can't really deny this one. Favorite tracks: I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, With or Without You, Where the Streets Have No Name, Bullet the Blue Sky, Red Hill Mining Town. Album art: It's weird, it's a very simple, very CD-era album cover, but it's been so ubiquitous that maybe it is iconic by now? I like that the whole band is squished together in the left 40% of the image, and that image is only 40% of the cover. Don't mind us, we're just U2. 4.5/5

Starkes Album. Sehr gerne mehr von dieser Qualität.

Bella la prima e la seconda pure, la terza anche. Le altre però sono un po' insignificanti

A marvel of musical production that perfectly captures the spirit of both the performances and the underlying emotions and spirit of a group. The impact of this album on the band's trajectory, and that of pop music, really can't be overstated.

It's good album. Smooth and atmospheric. My main issue is that is really blows it's load immediately with the genuinely great first 3 tracks, then the rest ranges from decent to good but never reaches those heights again.

A classic. Love it.

3.75/5 rock

starts off so ducking well and keeps it going even through songs i dont know, but dips a little in the second third…

73/112

fun fact about U2: it has no fans, everyone kind of accepts it. no one likes it. it's just a staple.

Bono en consorten in hun beste dagen! Mooi plaatje.

Goeie plaat hor!

listened to again not a very interesting album but some of the most groundbreaking guitar work of the past 4 decades

The 3-song opening sequence is about as big as you'll find on any album. Where the Streets Have no Name might still be my favorite U2 song, given the Edge's opening (and further) guitarwork and how the rest of the instruments just fit it so well. Bono's lyrics and vocals are great too. But after that I felt it was a bit uneven. The next 4 songs from Bullet the Blue Sky to In God's Country were pretty solid; retained a similar rock feel to the first 3 songs albeit not quite the same highs. The last 4 songs felt more like The Waterboys celtic sound (except for Exit, still heavy); more folksy and decent for sure but definitely not the same level as the first 3 big hits.

Cracking album 4.5

Top-notch christian rock

U2 was overplayed by others when I was a child, I never since thought to listen to it on my own. A couple of decades later it turns out this is a really great album full of epicness. 4/5

This one wasn’t new to me. Amazing album. I can’t imagine this ever feeling new or like risk taking, but the music is so epic. Standouts: Where the Streets Have No Name, I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, With or Without You, Red Hill Mining Town, One Tree Hill

Definitely the most accessible album U2 created and for good reason too. The first three songs are all extremely high quality moving songs (especially Streets) that turned out to become some of the biggest 80s hits (more so With or Without You). There's also some fantastic album cuts like Bullet the Blue Sky and Running to Stand Still on here as well. If you wanted to explore U2's output, this is the album to start with (though doing best of 1980-90 would be a better choice). The problem I found out about Joshua Tree from attending 3 anniversary concerts (which to be honest, 1 too many), was that the second half has a significant dip in quality. Everyone has opinions on what they like from that side, whether they prefer the more cheery acoustic country harmonica driven songs, or the more darker somber material closing the album. Personally I like the stretch of One Tree Hill to Mothers of the Disappeared, but I never listen to these songs individually. The rest (Red Hill to Tripped Through Wires) I can tolerate, but will tend to skip. The frontloaded nature of this album is a common problem with U2's discography, but to give Joshua Tree credit, it does have some great B-sides. Sweetest Thing and Spanish Eyes are the highlights of that pack. That all being said, Joshua Tree is a great album and definitely deserves creds for being here. I personally just find it a bit flawed and a tad overrated compared to Achtung Baby or War.

Best U2 album by a country mile. Very easy listen and some really catchy grooves. 3.5/5 (4/5) It also reminds me of one of my favorite music jokes: Bono, whilst playing a gig in Glasgow, got the whole crowd to be silent and then began slowly clapping his hands. He got the crowd to clap along for a while, the stadium quiet except for the rhythmic clapping… After a short period Bono spoke, saying that everytime he clapped his hands a child in Africa died … Suddenly, from the front row of the venue a voice broke out in thick Scottish brogue, ending the silence as it echoed across the crowd, the voice cried out to Bono “Well stop ****ing doing it then!!”

Its good but bland and front-loaded

This was one was biggest albums in my lifetime and frankly I never understood why. It's a fine album but it's wasn't anything groundbreaking and certainly not the Sgt Pepper. Just poppy version of music they were already doing. Though Bullet the Blue Sky is one my favorite songs. Anyway listen to War is much better.

Not a U2 fan. This was better then I expected. I'm not going to re-listen but I'm glad I listened to it.

It's a good album. Much better than I expected, and I liked it more than Achtung Baby. But as good as it is, I just don't see putting it on very often.

Already knew :)

Real Good

I don’t know why, but I don’t really like U2. It’s probably due to their album ending up on my phone without my permission. They are definitely talented af and can make a hit like nobody’s business. I didn’t hate this album.

Pretty outrageously good first 3 songs. Mega 5 stars for those first 3, fine for the rest.

Quite enjoyable, really suprised me

Better than I remembered.

fuck u2 all my homies hate u2 - great album though 7/10

Cool guitar, anthemic jams

The breakthrough commercial smash that cemented U2 in the public psyche is marred only by the fact that "With or Without You" was used in the television show Friends.

Lanois and Eno produced U2 is best U2. This is a great album. 4 stars.

Solid album.

I had a friend who was a bit U2 fan from the early days so I've always been aware of them as they have grown into the phenomenon they are now. This is a great album and those opening tracks are jusst incredible. Excluding those my other faves would be Bullet The Blue Sky and Mothers Of The Disappeared.

Well, you can certainly see how U2 got so big. This is a great album, with a massive cinematic stadium-filling sound. Reading the blurb about this album has made me want to check out their previous album "The Unforgettable Fire" which apparently has some strong ambient leanings?! That sounds like exactly my jam! Fave track - I mean the first three tracks taken together are iconic AF...

A few good tunes.

Starts off very strong, falls off a bit but still overall solid album. Some surprising folksy stuff in there.

Classic U2

Why is it only four stars? Play it without the first three tracks and it's a good enough album. But overly reliant on the brilliance of the first three tracks, in contrast with Achtung Baby that is five stars all the way through.

There's a great slow build to the opening track which cascades nicely into "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking for" The album overall hits some great notes, I get a good sense of the emotional journey here. The band does a good job of finding a good volume balance between instruments, the guitar, bass and drums all have chances to wander center stage.

What a way to start an album. Honestly really enjoyed about 9/11 tracks on this.

I generally don’t like U2 that much, but this is a pretty good album.

A classic album and a huge hit when it came out...everyone seemed to have this album in their collection. Some fantastic songs on here but not my favourite U2 album, that's 'The Unforgettable Fire'. So 4* from me.

I give U2 a lot of shit for their sound being big and empty, but this album does have a broad sonic scope that proves some of that wrong. Another thing that it highlighted for me is the fact that U2 has this fantastic stadium sound that grates against me for general listening, as I don't like the way that mix comes out.

3.5/5. This was rock. I mean, the first 3 songs of the album are pretty good, and definitely some of their most popular. I felt the rest of the album was rock. Nothing really special about it. I can see how people can like this, however.

There are people for which The Joshua Tree is U2's Opus Magnum. For others, it's Achtung Baby. I'm firmly in the latter camp, but I still can recognize The Joshua Tree as the great collection of songs that it is. Compared to its predecessors, the band's sound has evolved to become grander and more cinematic. (Though it's no sonic revolution like Achtung Baby). Songwise, apart from the usual suspects (Where The Streets Have No Name, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, With Or Without You), there are some really great songs on here (Red Hill Mining Town and One Tree Hill readily come to mind). Of course, the usual problem in much of U2's catalog, preachy Bono, is present here as well, but it somehow fits the music and is less annoying than elsewhere. This is a recommended listen. 4/5

Opens with three really strong tracks (i.e. the singles) and then tails off a bit. Good album, but not as good as I was hoping. Did like Red Hill Mining Town though.

Always heard of this as a classic but this is the first listen. Pretty strong opening, it's unfair to say the album tails off - it just happens to be that the first three songs ended up as classics. Exit hits a weird note, it doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the album but I enjoyed the build-up through the song. I can't really call it a perfect album, I'm not sure why but it just doesn't scream classic to me, although I probably would listen to it again.

All time greats

Love it, a classic, a bit naff but I don't care

Really good album. First half is amazing...2nd half is solid to above average. 4.5/5

probably 4.5 - the first three songs are perfect, but then it drops off - or at least that's what i thought going in. the back half actually was better than i remember, and i listened a lot to this album growing up.

I wouldn't say I'm ride or die with U2, but I also end up defending them a lot. I guess I'm just surprised that people aren't more willing to look past the annoying stuff about U2 (Bono; overstated musical innovation/influence; foisting new albums on iPhone users) and consider all that they bring to the table. This record is one of their best, IMO. I never really listen to it. But I honestly wonder how much of that has to do with the audible gasp in the room/car any time U2 comes on...there is never a good time. 4/5 because its one of the most influential records by a seminal 80s band. Their Red Rocks performance from this era would be 5/5. But a lot of their catalog would be in the sub-3/5 realm. Which I'm sure we'll discover through this process. Hell, I might have already said a different version of the above in a previous U2 review. Who knows. Also, The Edge is clearly outclassed by Jack White and Jimmy Page in that "It Might Get Loud" documentary.

Kinda iconic. Gotta admit it's good

p582. 1987. 4 stars. The sound of late 80s stadium rock. Oddly enough, it's the most well known tracks - Where The Streets Have No Name, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, With Or Without You - that haven't aged well, it's like repeated plays have worn off any real impact they once had. The album really kicks in from Bullet The Blue Sky onwards. It's good stuff, not a weak track on it BUT then we come to Bono. You can only take so much Irish bombastic earnestness before thinking, "just shut the fuck up", so a point deducted for that. On the plus side, The Edge seems quite a good guitarist.

The album opens with 3 legendary tracks that define the sound of U2. The passionate Bono vocals and the quintessential Edge licks. But after, the songwriting really dips. Production remains great, I mean it’s Eno, but no song captures you the way the first 3 do…

Great 1-2-3 punch at the beginning with some of their greatest hits, after that the album becomes weaker but is still very solid pop/rock that knows how to entertain

Liked this more than I thought I would!

This was U2 at the peak of their powers, with their Achtung Baby follow-up showing they were an unparalleled creative force experiencing a golden period in their career. They never reached this high and far again.

just some of the greatest u2 has brought

I'm not much of a fan of The Edge or Bono or U2's sound in general. That said, this is still a solid album.

A-side is absolute classic, not as excited for B-side though. Amazing guitar sounds, Bono in his prime. They really did something with this one. Great album.

Never been a U2 fan but this one has a lot of their hits.

Good tunes

i knew u2's hits and of bono's humanitarian work, but i was still taken aback when listening for the first time. this album, with lyrics written only by bono, covers so many topics and political themes. i love pop-y, mindless songs, but songs with great meaning? those are dynamite. bono's heart and compassion come through the lyrics so clearly. "mothers of the disappeared" in particular is going to stick with me for a long time--"we hear their heartbeat." i'm not sure if i've ever heard of a genre called "art rock," but as i listen to this album, really listen to it, i totally get it. all music is art, yes, but u2 takes it further, on all possible musical levels. every song has such beautiful instrumentation. definitely a concept album. i cannot wait to listen to this album again and grow to truly love it.

A brilliant album when it first came out. Still sounds good.

It's actually good, and from before they became insufferable arseholes

It's so weird to see Bono without his trademark glasses. The Joshua Tree is really one of those quintessential albums, I had always discounted it being just a bunch of hype (never listening to it in it's entirety before now), but it definitely holds it's own. The powerful voice of Bono with the smooth arrangement of the music and backing vocals make it a powerhouse album with a cinematic quality. Lyrically, it was the beginning of U2's sociopolitical awakening with embellishments of spiritual imagery. Best: With Or Without You Worst: Trip Through Your Wires

Excellent. Some all time classics on here

U2 at their best

I wonder if they ever found what they were looking for?

classic meh

Favoritas: Faixa 1 Faixa 2 Faixa 3

It's no secret why U2 continues to be considered one of the top bands of all time. This album is their peak to me. It starts strong out the gate and just continues to pummel with sweepingly epic songs. The songs have messages, carry meaning and you can feel it in the music. Just too bad about what they've done recently, but I do commend them on always looking at what's next for them. They could've just kept trotting out the same ol same ol, but they continued to innovate and try new things. Even if I may not dig what they're writing these days, doesn't change the fact that it's still impressive.

I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Some tracks just ok but several great songs.

U2, but good

This evokes a strong sense of nostalgia for me. Being young - figuring out the world - figuring out love and pain. Passionate and wild.

4.5 / 5.0 Such a great album! Most of the songs are iconic!

Where the Streets have No Name is one of my favorite songs all time I think

Bono is a douche, but this was pretty good.

Although it's not quite my favorite sound, I see why this album is legendary. Pretty iconic songs back to back, and dang that play count! Well done, kids.

All about bullet the blue sky

Pro bono

Widescreen? Widescreen. Still sparkles.

Sin ser U2 un grupo que me entusiasme reconozco que este es un muy buen disco

The one U2 album that I really love. Brian Eno works his magic here to make them into the band they should be.

Classic

I really disliked this album and U2 when it came out, primarily because U2 were/are so political within their music and that was something I have always felt should not happen. 35 years laters and I now listen to music in a different way and I have enjoyed this album, it has some great tracks on it

I know this album by its first three songs in addition to its own reputation as the best U2 album. It is a good u2 album and I love still haven’t found what I’m looking for but I think the last half of the album really doesn’t do the first half justice. Favs: streets have no name, still haven’t found what I’m looking for, with or without you

The big hits off this still hold up for me. Its clearer from several decades on that the album benefited greatly from its venerable producers. All a bit portentous and self-important but that’s U2

Peak U2 before it all went downhill

Hate that it's such a good album

Really great. Vast. Forward moving.

A classic for a reason

One of those CDs that regardless of if you like the vand or not, really will hit with everyone. The only thing that stops me from giving it a full 5 stars is that the lows (the middle 2-3 songs are fully forgettable even before you finish the album) are true lows.

Finally! I've found a U2 album that doesn't make me want to stab my ears out.

As I've mentioned with the other U2 albums, I run hot-and-cold with this band. I do remember this album pretty well because it got a lot air play and coverage at the time. I enjoyed listenting to it today quite a bit more than I expected. This album has a great sound to it (I don't know enough about music production, sound engineering, etc., to comment intelligently on it, so I'm not sure how much that work has to do with the "sound" I'm talking about) and the songwriting is overall excellent. Hard to separate Bono from the "Bono-ness" of his gargantuan image, so I really tried to just listen to the music and let that be it. It did help. His voice can be quite compelling and he's got killer range, and it fits this music perfectly. I still love The Edge as a guitar player and repeat what I've said before about he deserves to be mentioned in the same list of whoever gets put on the "great rock guitarists" list. He's a lot more innovative and interesting than people give him credit for. I can barely understand what the few pedals I have do, and he plays effects and alternate tunings like they are instruments of their own.

Peak pompous u2 prior to their proper peak

Fantastic album

The record is characterised by a somewhat outdated realism, harking back to themes and moods of the 1930s, from Frank Capra to Ernest Hemingway. Where The Streets Have No Name marks a new peak of transcendental intensity, thanks to the frenzied, raga-sounding tones of the long instrumental overture and tribal beat. (7/10) Favourite Tracks: Where The Streets Have No Name, I Still Haven't Found, With Or Without You, Running To Stand Still

I’m mostly pro-U2, and I do think this is a good album, but I’m pretty sure half the tracks on this album are the exact same song just with slightly different delay setting on the edge’s guitar

No soy muy fanático de U2 pero hay que reconocerles que este disco es muy bueno

WITH OR WITHOUT YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU. Decent album 3.75/5

The Joshua Tree is the fifth album of U2. It contains the classics : "Where the Streets Have No Name", "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" and "With or Without You". The sound of the band evolved in a sort of alternative stadium rock. Something that is not necessary bad and too great commercial success, but I lost my interest.

Outside of the singles, some good songs and energy but not quite the polish of the big start

Well it's got 3 fantastic songs - the rest are just OK. I'll probably never play it again though those 3 songs are regulars on my playlist already.

Classic album with some great singles on it.

I'm not a great U2 fan, but it was nice to listen to this album again, after so many years. It also reminded me of how excellent the first four songs are. The rest of the song did not capture me as much, but overall a very good album.

Classic album that’s still stands up today

I rated the previous U2 album we got 2 stars and noted that I never understood the hype around them and find them pretty dull. I can understand this album's success a lot better. The songs have an undeniable grandness about them. Good album.

This album needs to be looked at in isolation to their more recent albums. When this came out it was pure genius and that can’t be taken away from U2 despite their later stuff being pure barbage. Some seriously good songs on this and great for U2. This is them at their prime. Bullet the blue sky is my favourite U2 song but the album trails off toward the end.

Really good album The end it gets a little less 4/5

Better than I expected! Doesn't sound as dated as I thought it would.

I had a moment while listening to this album yesterday where I thought to myself, 'oh, maybe I am a U2 fan.' I have a hard time articulating exactly what was so appealing about their anthem level soft rock. Maybe it was Bono's performance which howls. Maybe the never overbearing but huge, uplifting swell of guitars that make up much of the background. It's hard for me to say exactly why, but the album is endlessly appealing. Something I wouldn't have thought to say after growing up with the more laborious older albums that U2 has recently produced.

I had a real “U2 sucks” phase when I was younger, and I think it kept me from realizing that this is a truly great album. True, half of the tracks (the singles) sound like the exact same song and I still think U2 straddles that terminally uncool line between dad rock and mom rock, but the sound is so good; I love Bono’s voice and The Edge’s guitar work so much. Favourite track: “Trip through Your Wires”

D: 5/5. Rock tranquilo, para relajarse. Canción favorita: With or without you. R: 4/5. Relajante. Ideal para estudiar. Canción favorita: I still haven't found what I'm looking for.

вполне, радио по альбому хорошее получилось

First three songs are amazing and classics! Rest are not memorable. 4/5

Tolles und historisches Album! Memory man sei dank

Favourite Song: With or Without You

Joshua Tree sounds like the culmination and refinement of U2's sound, as they move away from their punk roots and into a more radio friendly pop. Almost like REM's Automatic For The People and Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA. For better or worse, it ended up sending them into stardom, and potentially inflated their egos a bit. There's a subtlety to the arrangements and lyrics that are lost in the broader modern U2 songs. While "Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" unwittingly provided the blueprint to 2000s Christian worship music, there's a good balance of personal lyrics by Bono with broader themes that deal with real world issues. Fav Tracks: Red Hill Mining Town and Mothers of the Disappeared Rating: 3.5/5

Brilliant album. 'I still haven't found what I'm looking for' is such a powerhouse vocal performance from Bono and I love the sound of the overall album, credit for this must be given to producer Daniel Lanois (he also produced Dylan's 1997 masterpiece Time out of Mind which shares the same swampy 'wall of sound' style production)

Love the grandiosity which captures the immigrant spirit of the American dream. The first half is close to perfect but cannot be sustained. It's a shame the U2 sound has become a bit of a joke as it's epic. I listened to it walking around Sheffield at twilight, the vistas were different but the feelings were the same.

This was a surprise to me. Cool as fuck. Who knew?!

U2 are a band I blacklisted for arseholiness and haven't listened to for 25 years. But I used to like them, and before Rattle & Hum they were good. This is a good album.

Not a big U2 fan but this is a pretty good album

Not my favorite U2 album, but this really is the peak of good U2 before they became the most pretentious band of all time. Only songs I don’t like on this album are One Tree Hill and Exit. I could take or leave Running to Stand Still, Red Hill Mining Town, and Mothers of the Disappeared, but they aren’t bad. Overall, this album is great and doesn't deserve the disrespect.

Beter dan ik verwacht had. Heeft uiteindelijk een paar uur opgestaan.

Excellent album. Some really great songs.

Undeniably confident and charismatic, soars when it should, whispers when it must

With or without. Some good songs. Structure. "Bullets.." Intro

Nichtkleinzuredende 3.6

This album. This was a really important one for me. I listened to it A LOT. I still have my original vinyl. I also remember searching for the 12" of Where the Streets Have No Name because Sweetest Thing was on the B Side. This was my first concert where no parents were involved. This was my first BIG concert. We left early in the morning and sight seed our way to the Oakland Coliseum, with lots of time to hang out in the parking lot. Rating this is hard. I want to give it a 4 because there are other albums that are probably better, but in revisiting it for the first time in a long time I can't believe how good it still is, how much I love it, and I want to give it a 5. But I'm going with 4.

Very good album.

It's got the hits. Fun to listen to.

real good

They’re okay. Not bad considering the vintage and general popularity

THE EDGE

Sonic beauty

U2 as a band still annoy me. I wish I could hear this as if for the first time.

Quite something this ay?

Nice. Couple of the favorites are on this album. The rest felt closer to good then great though

Timeless

Not too bad. Bullet the Blue Sky (sp) was my favorite track. I remember this album from childhood, and didn't like it then, but I have a much better appreciation.

An undisputed classic. 5/5 quality, 4/5 for music i want in my rotation

Classic

Best band i won't waste my time listening to on purpose that's for sure

Peak U2 and prolly peak ‘stadium’ rock

the first 4 songs are a solid 4, then it dips a bit 5/5 to Eno on the production.

6/10 - Of course the signature song "With or Without You" but I've never been a massive fan of U2 so the rest of the album is samey to me
