okay I was NOT in the mood for U2 when this came up but oh my god. it rips.
Surprisingly enjoyed it
I close my eyes... color and light swirls around me. I open my eyes and realize that was just a flashback to 2010. I close my eyes and I am 14 in an imax theatre in New York City. U2 is blasting. It is my freshman year band field trip. I am not allowed to leave to pee. I am here for 2 hours but it feels like a century. I come out aged, wise beyond my years for 7 minutes before the effect wears off. I did not appreciate the experience, but it's hard when you get blindsided with two hours of a full-sensory experience of Irish alternative rock in the middle of the afternoon. I exit the theater, back into the rock and roll hall of fame lobby. We go back down the escalators in pairs because a girl in my group is afraid of heights. I take one blurry photo of the corner of the lobby... This is going in The Facebook Album. I open my eyes. It is 2025. I am sitting at my desk. I am allowed to turn down the music. I can get up to pee without raising my hand. Life is good, but it was good then, too. 5/5 for the music and the experience. Thanks for forcing me to listen to this again. I can appreciate it now.

I won't lie, I've always loved The Joshua Tree. As much of a hot take that is in some circles, I still stand by this album's merits. It's just a very interesting look at what it means to pursue the American dream and how people perceive said dream.
Love it and saved to my collection! Great instruments and voice with socially conscious lyrics. Bullet the Blue Sky is beautiful!

I listened to this album multiple times, and it never felt too special to me. I tried to like it, but nothing stood out. Nothing was bad, and I definitely enjoyed the band's sound, especially on the guitar, but it felt a bit too generic to me. Favorite Track: Bullet the Blue Sky
I didn't realize just how many of their hits I knew were on this one album. One Tree Hill might have been the weak point on the album for me. When someone brings up U2, its the songs on this album that I think about first. And then maybe unfortunately I also think about "uno, dos, tres, catorce". Why did you write that Bono. So dumb.

The first three tracks are great although overplayed, meanwhile the rest of it felt like a bit of a drag to listen through.
Great album but the first half is much better than the 2nd half.
Of the three U2 albums presented to me so far by this project, this one is my favourite.
You either love them, or you hate them. But with 'Joshua Tree', you get them at their best.

Banger album
I didn't expect to like this as much as I did. This would be great for long drives
I’ve never liked U2, I honestly don’t get their appeal. That was until today, this album is bloody brilliant. I wouldn’t say I’m a fan now but I am willing to give them a go.
Starts off incredibly strong. It’s such a strong start that you might think to yourself, “are U2 going to defy the odds and pull off a perfect record?”, but it gradually falls off, song by song, and becomes evident that Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois’ production is doing a fair amount of heavy lifting on this record.
Uhhhhh I know the first three songs on this? They've gotten a lot of play. In the context of yesterday's Coldplay album-- I find U2 a lot less grating, but ultimately boring. I have never listened to U2 on purpose. I probably should've been less mean to Coldplay with the stars, but now that I've set my scale as 'mean' how can I go back?
I remember this album being all over the radio.

U2 is CVS-core that has been co-opted by the corporate algorithm and shoved down our throat for our entire existence. Perhaps if we bury this album in a time capsule, go about our lives without "with or without you", and open it up in 100 years the next generation will find something interesting about this album.

Honestly I only made it halfway with this album. Truly not enjoyable experience too.
I have never heard a stronger start to an album! Where the Streets Have No Name, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For and With or Without You one after the other make the strongest start ever! Then the rest of the songs follow, which are a bit similar to each other, mostly in terms of atmosphere and lyrics that lead us around America. They criticize Bono mostly that he is too loud, and that his vocals are sometimes too loud for the background music, which makes him called egocentric and irritating, but I didn't mind it at all. This was a wonderful walk from Belfast to the USA, everywhere where the streets have no names and I enjoyed every moment of the album. After the end, I listened to the first 3 songs again - masterpieces! Probably the three best songs of entire U2's career, placed on the same album and one after the other.
I'm not a big fan of U2, but there are some high points here. I lost interest in them after this album because many songs here were massively overplayed. I saw U2 in the early 80s at a 5000-seat venue and I have to admit it was one of the best shows I ever attended. Then they were filling stadiums and I had no desire to see them again because a stadium show will never be able to top what they did that night in 1983. This album has some great songs, "Bullet the Blue Sky", "Where the Streets Have No Name", "Red Hill Mining Town", and "One Tree Hill". Also, there are some songs I never really want to hear again having been overplayed so many times. "With or Without You" and "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For". The rest is fluff. 3 stars.
Arrancamos otra semana de febrero con éste clásico de U2, banda que debo decir nunca me sentí tan atraído de escuchar a consciencia, por lo que sólo ubico éste disco por un conocimiento general de su obra y por alguno que otro de sus singles. El disco arranca arriba y luego se mantiene, con canciones tranquilas. Destaco "Bullet the blue sky", "Red hill mining town". Siempre destacable la manera de tocar de The Edge . Hasta mañana

For most of the running time, I enjoyed the guitars and soaring vocals, but the themes and overall vibe are a rather kitschy in 2025.
This fucking sucks
U2’s other iconic album. Where the streets have no name is a classic, they filmed the music video on top of a building in la and my mom always tells the story of how she tried to ditch school to drive down there with her friends. Kinda lame to have two U2 albums shown so close together but whatever. Love this album but still holding out for a 5.
Solid album, kinda annoying it was another U2 one in the week but oh whale. Pretty great collection of songs, but didnt make me feel anything in particular. 3.8/5 Fav song: With or Without You

I've never really understood the U2 love by elder Gen X. I think I'm just a few years too young to get it. I've always thought they were just OK. This album is fine. The second half of the album is very filler. The first half though had some really great songs.

Bono dug deep to achieve this incredibly personal album. I read that he wanted to pull it because of so many mistakes. It's hard to imagine someone, even him, could find it flawed.
What is left to be said. TJT came out when I was 17. It was inescapable. My high school relationship with U2 shaped my understanding of not just music but the production behind it, the guitar and bass tones and of course pony tails. The Unforgettable Fire was the real life changer for me but that record teed this one up. And did they knock it out of the park. It is impossible for me to view this album with anything approaching fresh eyes. But - top to bottom - it still sounds good - damn good. As good a collection of songs as they would ever assemble, before the lyrics got wonky (a slippery slope that accelerates as the 90s progress and let's not even talk about the 00s) and the music calcified, TJT perfectly captures them - in at a moment. The best version of themselves forever frozen in black and white. From singles to deep cuts this album is a juggernaut.
The production is superv. Really the only reason I kept coming back to this album

...and here's another essential 80's rock album. This album starts out with one of the greatest 3 song runs of any album ever. "Where The Streets Have No Name", "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" and "With Or Without You" are all some of U2's biggest singles. I wish these songs were spaced out more because the album definitely loses some momentum after "With Or Without You". Other than this one pacing problem this is still a fantastic album. The rest of the songs can't really compare to those hits but they are still quite good sometimes great. I especially enjoy the last two songs on this album "Exit" and "Mothers Of The Disappeared". At the moment this is my favorite U2 album. Favorite track: Exit
If you have to listen to U2 this is the album. The first half of the album makes me forget ai don't really like U2 the second half reminds me. I do appreciate the actual music the Edge is an innovative guitarist. I am personally not a huge fan of Bono's voice.
⭐⭐⭐ 6/10 It's perplexing how songs which are almost 40 years old are still so recognizeable to the part that you can just sing along with it. Apart from the first 3 songs I didn't know this album. It's alright, but does get boring, 3 stars because of the hits.
Amazing album
ok im sorry but this one was mid despite being a rock album. its incredibly bland. the song structures are incredibly repetitive and the lyricss are boring ahh. fuck me bye. i dont want to rate it a 1 but coupled with the religious stuff this just rubs me off the wrong way.

So close to being a perfect 5. So many stunning moments, but it’s just missing something to really push it over the edge, I don’t know what it is. But when I’m listening to those first three songs I’m in heaven. Perfect sad road trip vibes.

Incredible album. So many memories from when this album came out in 1987. To me this album is a must listen. Only the last track is a little disappointing when compared to the rest of the album to me.

Very long, I just can't get used to this music
Dunking on U2 is too easy and not cool, but all I hear is NEXT GENERATION AUTOMATED SOLUTIONS AWARD WINNING 24/7 TECHNICAL SUPPORT SCALE YOUR BUSINESS WITH SEAMLESS CLOUD TRANSITION This is of course a result of U2s massive success and distinctly unoffensive sound. Hits are not too bad to be honest.
What can I say. It's U2. I guess this album influenced a lot of bands because I hear many similar things that I've heard from other bands. Never payed attention to this album before. It's actually Ok. I'd play it again. Not the kind of music I like but this is fine.
Heard it before. I think I need to preface it by saying that I don't like U2 except for a couple of songs. The most popular songs from this album, With Or Without You especially, are aaaawfuuul. On the other hand Bullet The Blue Sky is a MASSIVE banger. I don't think I will ever become a fan of U2 but at the same time I don't hate the album? It's hard to articulate my feelings. 3/5
i’m familiar with this album, i think i may have listened to it before. i think my mom likes this band. it’s enjoyable, but i think i’m just not really into moody and atmospheric music right now.

The first three tracks are great. After that it just descends into monotony. The Edge's delay-based guitar grooves, straight ahead drum and bass, and Bono's ridiculous crooning, over and over. Meh.
First three songs are great. Haven’t heard much of the rest before now. Red Hill Mining Town is decent. Overall, I retain my original feeling of U2. I really like some of their songs, but not a band I would spend time getting to know the entire catalogue.

Fantastic album, generational defining!
U2 seem to be a band that polarises people, though personally don’t love them but don’t hate them either, yes they can come over as a bit pretentious with but I like the music up to this album when I listen to it. 4 star - distinct sound, know who it is within a few bars, always enjoy more than think I’m going to, could have been 5 but falls off towards the end.

never been a big U2 fan to begin with so im a little biased. I understand the appeal. But for me the vocals are never anything super special, and the edges overrated and mediocre guitar doest add much.
1/27/25. Another album by U2 I haven't listened to yet, but my opinion on the band is changing for the better after visiting their older records. The Edge's guitar playing is very underrated, and the band is great at creating these unique sonic landscapes.
more u2, oh boy. once again, this album is pretty much a textbook definition of how u2 normally sounds nowadays, with delayed arpeggiated guitars, dry warbling vocals and whatnot. it's one of their best, even with their usual pretentious rock music that the average person or group tends to get obsessed with. i don't know, i want to like this album fully but it has a sound i can't stand. this is a rock album your boss would like.

The Joshua Tree is one of the most front-loaded albums of all time, which both gave it the success it did but also bit it in the arse when U2 stopped being hitmakers. Unlike the Grand Old Duke of York, there was no chance of U2 being neither up nor down. Which is a shame, because the quality floor of this album is really high. There are no songs that I dislike, and some that I love. But what kind of chance do Exit or One Tree Hill have when half your audience has tuned out? This may sound like a weirdly negative review for an album I like, but it's only because it could've been a 5 had it been sequenced differently, and that 'so close and yet so far'-ness bugs me. That, and pretty much everyone has already said everything else that could be said. Tangent: I tend to find that I like Brian Eno contributions to production best when they're numerous and substantial, but also blend into the background. This album fits that criteria. This album is the music equivalent of 'Seinfeld is Unfunny', especially if you grew up in an Evangelical church like I did. Chiming echoed guitars, heartfelt belting, atmospheric synth pads, surprisingly militaristic drum beats, "steady" (a.k.a. boring) basslines playing a lot of root notes. So far, so Hillsong. HM Magazine ranked it as the #1 Christian Rock album. However, it's hard to ignore the punch of the first side. Starting out with some of the most enduring hits of modern rock radio before being punched in the face by Bullet the Blue Sky and comforted by Running to Stand Still. Side two by comparison is a big old ball of nothing. I can't imagine my Grandad with his life down the pits resonating with Red Hill Mining Town, and the following songs just feel half-hearted by comparison. For a band at the time defined by their sincerity and passion, that is a death sentence. If you want a better version of U2, listen to the albums either side of this one. If you want a better version of Christian U2, listen to King of Fools by Delirious?
Music for people who buy insurance for their sofa, cosider salt a spice, and 'stay up' till 10:30 on weekends to watch re-runs of Frasier.

Best Song: Where The Streets Have No Name. The driving rhythm really sets this track apart from the others. Unique amongst the other tracks, it actually feels fun. Worst Song: Running To Stand Still. Blandly weepy. Overall: I think what I find most annoying about U2 is how emotionally over-wrought everything is. Every song feels like it comes with Bono peeking at you out of the corner of his eye to check if you're having adequate emotional reaction. Coupled with how BIG every song is, the end result feels inauthentic. Music for crying in a stadium.

I think this album is alright because I like the beginning part of all of them, before the lyrics. The background music doesn't really go with the voice of the person singing+I dont like the way they sing with the beat. The music kinda sounds the same for each song but it still isn't bad.

Incredible. I used to listen a lot more to U2 when I was younger, glad to be reminded of how great they were at their best. Hardly a bad track on this, and next to the three big hits (arguably U2's best known songs), my favorite may be 'Running to Stand Still'.
I think hell just froze over. For most of my life I have held an irrational hate for U2 and Bono. I’m still unsure whether my Bono hate is misplaced, but today’s listen to The Joshua Tree absolved me of my negative alignment against the band as a whole. Though it’s still cringey to call yourself The Edge. The truth is that The Joshua Tree is a beautifully produced, delicately written album that really works once it clicks. I’ve listened to this in the past, but now I’m doubting whether I actually listened. It’s really solid. 4.3/5

Pretty good. U2 should be remembered for this and not that album they tried to force on everyone through iTunes years ago. But that’s how it goes.
Pretty inoffensive rock and roll. Really strong opening with the first 3 songs, and I also enjoyed how Exit and Mother's close out the album, but everything in the middle kinda blended together in my brain and is alright all around.
I'm surprised, but I've only heard this album all the way through twice before this listen (one of those times was at Joshua Tree National Park, fittingly). I say that's surprising because my parents (in particular my mom) absolutely adore U2. So I heard a lot of them growing up. So coming in I knew "I Still Haven't Found What I'm looking For" and "With or Without You," pretty much by heart. The rest, I knew less well. I think it's fair to say that they front loaded the hell out of this album. Or maybe they had a concept for it. Put the more echoey stuff on the first side, the more grounded stuff on the second. Hard to say. But I found the first side to be a much better time than the second. You have hit after hit, banger after banger on the first side. Hell, they even put the two aforementioned songs I already knew BACK TO BACK. What are you doing? Don't fire those bullets so quickly. Save those, space them out. But that's just me. As it is, the album is good. There's stuff to like on side two, and I appreciate the more grounded and at times even gritty sound they throw out there. It's a balance, and I think it works well enough for what it is and what they were going for. I just personally wouldn't have done it that way. It is nice to hear a more grounded sound come out of the band. They're so known for their airy and echoey guitar sounds and vocals that soar above it all and give the whole sound a really high-stakes feel. So to hear them produce a gritty bluesy track was awesome and something I want more of. Overall, this gets three and half from me. So I'll round up to four. Benefit of the doubt and all that. I fucking hate U2, however I can’t deny these first 3 songs on this album are awesome. My complaint is they all sound the same, and then the rest of the album is weak, and after this U2 always sounded the same. Boo

Really starts off with a trio of bangers. The influence this album has is readily apparent. Sometimes it can be hard to view a work of art separate from the art it has influenced. It is hard to view a work alone and not think of the many pieces it has gone on to influence. Sometimes a work of art might not stand the test of time on its own but rather as a piece of all it helped create. I think this album is not that. I think it does stand on its own. I might like some of the music is inspired more, but I liked this quite a bit.

I’m not a big U2 fan, but you can’t deny the mastery of an album with 4 songs that have been on regular radio rotation since the album’s release. Bullet the Blue Sky, probably the least popular of those four, is probably my favorite. There’s probably a bit of bias there because it hasn’t been overplayed quite as much as the other 3 of those 4 songs. The ones I didn’t know didn’t seem to have much to them. So 4 great songs and the rest, but I doubt I ever feel the need to listen again.

-this is apparently one of their most beloved albums. it’s pretty good but didn’t blow me away too much? something about it seemed too inoffensive, even compared to War, an album which I did really like -was sort of hard for me to hear any of Eno’s direction here too -still had some really amazing songs though. pretty good. I haven't listened to this since I was a kid, and I think I was holding a little too much U2 resentment since they put an album on my iPod touch without my consent, burrowing their way into my shuffle. That album wasn't great. This one is solid.
In a word: inoffensive. I can sense how impactful the sounds on this album are because of how familiar the drenched guitar tones are. Kind of ironic that the guitarist who calls himself the Edge has made some of the most corporate sounding tones imaginable. It seems to have influenced the creators of uplifting stock music, and I am not a CEO, so I don’t love the association. I know this is not U2’s fault, strictly speaking. Ultimately don’t hate the album, but I can’t really see myself spinning it much. It is fine.
I think I was too harsh on U2 growing up. I never met anyone that liked them so I never really gave them chance, but they’re just a less good The Killers, and as a big Killers fan, that means U2 is still pretty good and I appreciate all the walking they did so Brandon Flowers could run circles around them. As far as the album goes, I don’t think it quite captures and sticks to the America theme it’s going for as strongly as I’d like. I feel like they could’ve kept the album the same and gotten rid of that expectation and I’d like it more, but instead I was set up and let down. The album has some good songs and nice themes but overall I just feel like it’s still a 3, and I can’t really articulate why. However I’m excited to hear more from them in the future
Not a U2 fan but this is a great pop album
When I started buying vinyl albums a few years ago. The Joshua Tree was the first record I found in the used record shop pre-remastered edition and was the first vinyl I played on my turntable a few years later for that reason. I consider it in contention for my top 10 album intros ever.

I just don't get the U2 love. The first half of the album wasn't bad, but it's the poppy crud I've heard a million times before. I didn't mind the second half of the album though, a bit more brooding. Still not fussed though
My dad’s favorite band, so it’s hard not to have an attachment to them, but some of the singles are worn out for me, plus I think I like their earlier stuff, sorry dad. Still good though

My favourite U2 album
If you were in a covers band with your schoolmates at the time this album was tantalising, especially if you had a half decent drummer. The bass lines were so easy to work out and play, the smattering of keyboards were mostly straightforward and you didn't absolutely have to be a great singer to fake Bono's over earnestness. But nobody could afford The Edge's rack delay unit and even if you could you'd probably struggle with the settings. Didn't stop us trying and coming up with laughably weird spiky and plinky plonky versions. Gets an extra star for the nostalgia factor.

I’m in the in-between generation of people who love U2 and people who hate U2. I think this is a very good collection of songs. But I’m not going change my life for it. 4/5
I wish I had time to really dig into my thoughts here and listen 2-3 more times to do so. For now I'll just say that it might have the best 3 opening tracks of any album of its ilk, that includes Bruce and the like. The Edge is on another level here, Bono has fully matured, and the band makes simple instrumentation sound like an orchestra.
Not the highest 5 out there, but my favourite U2 album. It helped being 18 when it came out! I liked it better than their earlier work, and it’s improved with time.
The first three tracks are iconic. No matter how you feel about the rest of the album or U2 in general or Bono in particular, those three songs have burrowed their way into our collective subconscious.

There are two kinds of people. People who are convinced U2 are multi-generational geniuses, and those who see this as a terrific record that shouldn’t be missed behind the hyperbole. But dammit this sounds like U2. It’s almost a caricature it’s so spot on.
The 17 year old me, a firm early U2 fan was horrified by the sell out that was The Joshua Tree. The arrogance of youth. I still went to the Wembley concert. We played it for the first time in the common room of our 6th form for the rest of the school. It stands up as one of the great rock and roll albums. Consistent, full of energy and, despite the moderation of the sound, plenty of righteous anger.
Sixteen year old me chalks this up as an easy 5. And upon listening again, 50-year old me is pleased to mostly agree with my younger self. Bono gets on my nerves pretty fast as a person, but I have to think even his harshest critics have to give him credit for a lot here, especially With Or Without You and my favorite track on the album, Bullet The Blue Sky. This was the moment for U2 when everything fell together, and they finally reached an audience who somehow missed their landmark performance at Live Aid two years earlier. The three hit songs from this album are arguably the three most popular of the band's career. It's almost the definition of a quintessential album. 4.5⭐️

I guess if you front load your 3 biggest hits onto an album you get to be on the list of greatest albums of all time, even if the rest of the album is mediocre at best. There are songs that are recorded so quietly, I found myself having to relisten to them so I could actually hear the full album. It's terrible. I hate it. I hate U2. I know there's more U2 albums on this list, and I'm sure I'll hate them too
First 3 songs are fantastic! And then it falls to the rest of the songs to try and match the "greatness(?)" of these and frankly the rest of the songs are not even close to being as good. I didn't hate the rest of the songs, but I think to better format this album, they should be scattered throughout and have the good songs in between. It would result in a better paced album. These other songs have their moments and have a likeable quality to them. I think I'd come back to this album, there wasn't really anything I hated about it. I could listen to it front-to-back again 4/5

Here we go!!!! 🚨Core memory alert🚨: This album was my exclusive soundtrack for playing Neopets on weekend mornings as a 12yo. 20 years ago, music videos were available on Yahoo Music (anyone else?) and I remember thinking Bono was quite sultry in I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For. So much eye contact! This album kicks off with three intensely longing and, yes, completely generic love songs—perfect for tweens with no real-world relationship experience coming off complete Disney saturation. Special mention for Red Hill Mining Town, too. Scratches the same itch as All The Young Dudes and Salisbury Hill (which is more a specifically high school era itch, to be continued...) Sentimental? Yes. Basic. Yes! But sometimes music needs to meet you where you are.

U2 is serious in a way that I can’t be, or at least doesn’t align with the kind of seriousness I respect. Just look at this fucking cover art. U2 is leather pants serious. U2 is “we have our own signature iPod” serious. U2 is a guitar player earnestly referring to himself as “The Edge” and wearing a stupid fucking skull cap every day serious. I’ll give this album its due, even found myself singing along to I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For; but no, I do not like U2

Yes, they became insufferable after this, but it was a big deal at the time. And there’s really lovely production work here. Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois really worked a bit of magic to give U2 their big sweeping sound. Not my favorite of U2 album, but it is tough to hate on. The Edge is at his best here.

I have maybe an unfair aversion to U2, but don’t preload music onto my phone. But I’m clearing my head for unbiased review. There’s a bigness to their sound, like cinematic, and I don’t hate it. Still Haven’t Found desperately needs a bridge. I want one. With Or Without You— YES, David. Trip Through Your Wires is a new to me jam. One Tree Hill— babe. They played this song in the final scene of One Tree Hill. It was so perfect. I have to believe that wrapping a teen soap was Bono’s dream when recording this track.
Maybe the greatest highway driving album ever? Propulsive bass lines, steady drums, top shelf lead guitar, and fucking Bono? I mean, come on. It’s so easy to hate on U2. They’ve essentially become a caricature of a dramatic arena rock band (the lead guitarist goes by “The Edge,” for Pete’s sake), but they’re just so damn good. I really didn’t want to give this 5 stars, but it feels like giving anything less would be more about me needing to feel cool than it is about them and this thing that is objectively a masterpiece.

I have heard it before and honestly I just skimmed thru because I really do not care for U2 at their most arena ready sound (late 80s and their post 2000 music), it's something about how both it sounds too poppy to be interesting to me, it has some of U2's worst instincts in songwriting beginning to take hold (The Edge's guitar hello) and just the feeling that the lasting influence of this album being shitty music for ads. There's too much about this album that simply doesn't make it enjoyable to me knowing me and knowing how I feel about the pop side of 80s arena rock, their 90s output is forever the best part of their discography, not this

J'ai été amené à jouer 'Sunday bloody sunday', un vrai plaisir et un vrai challenge (même après quelques semaines de travail il m'arrivait de ne pas réussir à rester stable rythmiquement). En comparaison les lignes de 'with or without you' ou 'I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For' sont très basiques, faciles à maitriser (une ou deux répétitions suffisent), mais sont ennuyeuses à jouer. The first 3 songs are bangers and sound HUGE... U2's bass/drum section is always quite simple but in the pocket and I love them for that. This album is Bono and The Edge at the peak of their powers. Yes, Bono is indulgent and talks about God too much...docking him one star.

I know U2 is good and Bono seems like a great guy. But, as a cold-blooded New Englander, I find it off-putting to hear a man expressing such big, earnest emotions. After listening to most of You talking U2 To Me, I made it through all of the major U2 albums JT is U2s best work and maybe has the best 3 tracks sequences right off the top. The ultimate edition/box set release that included their live performances is so worth listening to. Trip Through Your Wires is an all timer for me. Major life regret was missing the JT tour that ran for the 20th (?) anniversary
U2 is another one of those bands that is kind of cool to not like, right? I’ll admit I probably fall into that camp on most days, especially what they have become now. That said if I’m going to stand on my soapbox that Jack Antonoff doesn’t deserve all the flack, I probably need to extend that same openness to our Irish friends. I’m a little embarrassed to say I’ve never listened to Joshua Tree front to back. Absolutely classic three song start to this one. Loved Running to Stand Still and the stretch of a few songs after are all solid too. This got better with each listen. Played it once in the car and my wife said, “this must be your album of the day, we never listen to U2.” That’s right and you better not tell anyone I enjoyed it either.

It’s a great album held back from being a perfect album by the second side being a big downgrade from the first side. But it is a must-listen (#49).

Alles wat ik noteerde bij 'War' en 'Achtung Baby' gaat ook hier eigenlijk wel een beetje op. Meer galm dan in de lokale basiliek, Bono met z'n hoge stem, tot in de puntjes verzorgde en daardoor iets overgeproduceerde geluiden. Ook dit is weer zo'n album waarbij je als het een LP was niet gauw de moeite zou doen om je luie, viesdikke stink-lijf van de bank te slepen om de schijf om te gaan draaien. Maar dat kan ook aan mij liggen. Er zal vast een snob zijn die beargumenteerd dat de side B eigenlijk de beste kant is. Op de eerste 3 tracks na is het matig. Wat doe je dan qua cijfer? Ik ga het op een 2 houden deze keer. Van U2 kun je het beste gewoon een greatest hits aanzetten, dan heb je een uurtje prima muziek.

The ambience of this album just hits different. The effervescent guitar, the sustained slides, Bono's beautiful voice.... Deserves its reputation as one of the best albums of all time. The sound is unlike anything else I've ever heard. Makes me think of shooting stars in the desert sky.

Quality songs with deep lyrics
The Joshua Tree is a pretty good album. This album does tend to play it safe throughout most of the songs as it doesn't really try anything to help it stand out from all the other alternative rock bands that were around a lot throughout the 1980s. It does try some things but not all that much to make the album feel like it's own. That being said, it's still a solid album and while the songs do tend to play it safe, a lot of them actually sound pretty good and there was also no point when i was so bored to the point where i was losing track of the songs. This album isn't anything all that special but it's still a solid one nonetheless. Best Song: Bullet The Blue Sky Worst Song: With Or Without You

A classic
We're two-for-two now on albums I have on vinyl. This one is pretty much chockablock with big tunes. I was under the impression that The Joshua Tree was front-loaded with hits and then trailed off pretty quickly into Lanois-style atmospherics, but it doesn't start to waft away until the middle of side 2. Even then... I remember this being the talk of campus when it was scheduled to come out my freshman year. I also recall listening to the cassette on repeat (auto-reverse) in my girlfriend's dorm room. Perhaps as a result, I have a hard time being objective about this one.

U2 is a band obsessed with scale and scope. The first half of Joshua Tree shows us that this isn't always a bad thing, with the massive production and sweeping delay guitars in cuts like "Where the Streets Have No Name" and "With or Without You" giving this really effective towering presence. The huge feel does start to wear down on you towards the later half, though, and many of the interesting ideas and unique sounds that U2 prove they're capable of get swallowed in its oppressive production.
I've listened to this album many times before. U2's songwriting on this album is amazing. The Edge's incredible guitar work permeates the album. Bono sings with passion but always in service to the songs. Before this album they had some great songs but hadn't really understood how to put it all together to achieve greatness. After this album they had some great songs but they just couldn't capture the spirit of this album (though Achtung Baby comes close). This album was the high point of U2's career, one of the best albums of the 80's, and one of rock and roll's great achievements.
Just so good to hear this in its entirety again. What an album! I guess that I spent the later 3/4 waiting for another hit to pop up, but I still enjoyed revisiting "Bullet the Blue Sky" and "In God's Country"

There's an expansiveness, maturity, and confidence to this album that really makes it work well. I like this one much better than the previous U2 album we had.
Never repetitive and still sounds amazing. If they're ever back at The Sphere, just go. Expensive but worth every penny. Most amazing venue ever.

You know, I’ve been looking at the “controversial artists” portion on my summary and thought what band would probably even go in there. What type of band would even fit that category where I would like and hate albums from the same band? Today, I found out that U2 might fit that bill. I don’t care for U2. Anytime a radio station play a song from them, I change it. It’s mostly because of Bono’s borderline whiny voice. But, I don’t completely despise U2. That leads to this predicament; I didn’t hate this. I feel that this might be the band’s best material. Now that’s not going to say a lot. Bono is still a whiny twat on this album and this album fizzled a bit as it reached the end. But this is as tolerable as U2 can get for me. Honestly, the three opening tracks alone seal the deal and make up for the inferior second half. I don’t know when I’ll get another U2 album. I know there will be another, hopefully at least 300 or more albums from now. But I’ll pretty sure this is the peak for U2 for me. If not, I think I have a problem. Getting this album right after Talking Heads (produced by the same loser) is really funny. Talk about a downgrade. Look, it's not an garbage album musically, it's really not - and that's what makes it so awful to listen to. This entire record bar one song (With Or Without You) is just one big build-up, with no release. Every song on here makes me long for women across the world who get so close to finishing in the bedroom, yet don't. Really does remind me why my girlfriend sleeps in a separate bed. The fact this album is so fucking boring is really what makes it terrible. The music is so inoffensive it becomes offensive, what a paradox that is. still better than The Smiths tho
The Joshua Tree - U2 (1987) Oh dear, this is what passes for one of their better albums about 80% of this feels like the same hazy/up in the air vibe that you would hear in an insurance ad where the guy in the ad is doing some job at sea or rescuing a koala or some other bullshit. From my previous exposure to this band that seems to be their winning formula to landing 4 albums on this list somehow. The other 20% is pretty bad though, seriously what the fuck was that bit in Bullet the Blue Sky where he just starts yapping about putting your chips down and whatnot. I forgot how simply gorgeous this album is. It starts off so sweeping and bombastic, then has tragically and quietly beautiful songs that end softly and resonate with you when it’s over.
Wanted to like this one. I just didn’t like it. All the songs sounded soft with rounded edges (apart from Bullet the Blue Sky and Exit). A boring album with poor, muddy mixing. I don’t get the hype.

"The Joshua Tree" is the fifth album by Irish rock band U2. The album was produced by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. In contrast to the ambient "The Unforgettable Fire," the band aimed for a hard-hitting sound within the limitation of a conventional song structure. The band and album were influenced by "American and Irish roots with the sociopolitical lyrics embellished with spiritual imagery contrasting the "real" America with fascination of the "spiritual" America. Commercially, it hit #1 in both the US and UK and was critically well-received. In 2014, the album was put in the US National Recording Registry for its artistic significance. The album opens with "Where the Street's Have No Name." A droning synth leads to a repeating guitar arpeggio. The songs builds with the drums, bass and lead singer Bono coming in. The song was influenced by the status, religion and income, of a person living in Belfast being able to be determined by the street they live on. It's a song of hope and gets the album off to a flying start. The delayed guitar arpeggios continue in "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For." Spiritual yearning. Great choir-like backing vocals. Bono initially takes a softer vocal approach in the lead single "With or Without You." Synths and an electronic drum beat. The bass enters and later on drums and guitar. The tension builds. A unique song structure in that there are no repeating sections. Bono is struggling handling both the life of a rock star and his domestic responsibilities. "Red Hill Mining Town" begins side two. A melodic repeating guitar line which leads to a very melodic song overall. Another song that builds with Bono's soaring vocals. A song about the 1984 UK mining strikes."One Tree Hill" was written as a tribute to roadie Greg Carroll who was killed in a motorcycle accident. Melodic song again ✔️. Strings are added too. It's the only song that U2 did not play on the ensuing tour. It's interesting (maybe a shame) that the only thing Gen Z probably knows about U2 is that they were forced to have their 2014 album on their phones and it was no "Joshua Tree" since they do have a few very good albums. I do remember the release of this album being a very big deal at the time and it lived up to its hype. They did achieve a big sound on this album. Bono gives maybe his best vocal performance-varied, loud, soft. The lyrics were a step up from previous album. Overreaching at times...sure. The one thing that I took away from today's listen was how good some of the deeper tracks are..."Exit," "Running to a Stand Still," and "Mother's of the Disappeared." Mostly everyone have strong opinions on U2 and, even I can't defend their albums from the past 25 years but this album stands up as a classic, has aged very well and deserves all its accolades.
Stadium rock. Strong start. Bad mixing ? Remastered issue. Some variety at the end with almost bluegrass. Good album for romance movie. Takes itself way too serious.

Len called me one day in a right panic. He said some Irish lads have started calling themselves Houmous & Chutney! I said no chance. No one would be stupid enough to try to steal the name of such an iconic band. We bumped into Bono when they were supporting Bananarama. He looked nervous and shouted ‘Houmous & Chutney?’ We shouted back ‘You Too?’…..he looked startled then said ‘Yeah, that’s us!’……Next thing you know, he’s got The Edge, Adam Clayton and the other one in a huddle. Suddenly U2 are announced on stage. We couldn’t believe it! 3.5
In my opinion the best album by U2. So for me a classic, one of the great ones, one you should regularly listen to.

I can't listen to any U2 songs without thinking of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8dZwXnMrRU ... I didn't dislike the album, the 3 more well-known tracks that leads off the album are good. The rest of the album is fairly bland.
A huge seismic shifting moment in history for the band .nothing would be the same after this . Amazing
# Playlist track - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For # Notes - I'm not a huge Bono fan, so that definitely affects my experience. - Album is not *bad*. But it's very very U2-ish, which can be something good or bad for you. - I do like Brian Eno very much, tho, and he helped produced this. I wonder what where can his influence be heard. - Interesting album, nice piece of musical history, but doesn't make it to my top 100.
Opens with some classics and is a pretty solid album all the way through. Something about it just doesn’t make it hit that next level for me though.

I think what makes this U2’s biggest record is balance. Not leaning too far in one direction, staying true north in search of something unfindable. They locate awe and violence in that search. From a songwriting perspective this is a phenomenal album, a look into America as a myth and as a crushing reality. Bono’s lyrics seek to square the expansive divide between the dream that America represents and the miserable amount of blood spilled to justify it. It’s intellectual but at the same time arena ready and universally captivating. Musically is where things lose some of their sheen for me. For the time, I can hear the immense influence a record like this has on rock music but the aforementioned balance that aids the songwriting seems to hinder the musical freedom. They all sound like songs trying to break out of an unbreakable box. Interminably attached to a soupy formula that at times piques the interest between Bono’s ghastly wails and the ferocity of the instrumentation but for the most part of the record the atmospheric density takes center stage which in some cases hinders the effectiveness of the songwriting and rawness the band desperately wants to present. Fantastic record, but sounds a whole lot like U2 :)

Sort of the musical equivalent of cornflakes. Entirely listenable and inoffensive but only one or two moments where I felt the music did something interesting or unique. U2 have much better than this elsewhere in their catalogue.

i'm going to guess that every bit i liked has way more to do with brian eno than bono

Ahhh, the memories
The best songs on this album for me are "Within Without You", "Bullet The Blue Sky", and "Exit". "Where The Streets Have No Name", and "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" are also nice. The rest was so-so for me. I feel like this is a 3.5 for me, but 4 feels a little too high. All the same since I gave War a 3 and I do like this more, I suppose 4 will have to do.

Stuck on what to give this album, to me it isn’t bad but it just doesn’t do it for me despite the first few tracks being pretty good. I don’t like U2 and this album won’t change that
Starts out with great promise. The Anger and longing feel personal yet also political and the songs are infused with momentum. Then it starts to meander and drift. Feeling preachy and overly careful. I saw them in this tour and I really never listened to a whole album by th after this. The concert was a mess and I longed for for the U2 that was raw and full of power.
Never actually sat down and listened to this album, though I was familiar with the hits. The hits are unreal, but Bono’s ramblings elsewhere aren’t as enjoyable and drag it down a bit.

Avalon,Nirvana, They went there and milked it. But this is their peak. Everything coalesced on this album. And thereafter we were left with just the rattle and hum.
Great album but not as relevant to me these days
Very spiritual, the edge is truly singular.
Outside of the 3 earth-shatteringly massive songs, I mainly only really like Red Hill Mining Town which is lovely. And everything after it is basically garbage, unmemorable. 2 of those opening three tracks are undeniably all-timers though, so they get a star each. Achtung Baby however, is worlds better than this as an album.
One star for With or Without You, another star for I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.
Oggettivamente ben fatto, tolta qualche canzone più colorata, non apprezzo il grigiume percepito della musicalità. Non apprezzato. Le hit le riascolterei, ma non troppo.
