Jack ass though
Really jarring having all these 60-90 second songs. It felt like a demo tape in that they had all these ideas that they wanted to record, without really developing them. Maybe that's more a comment on me not being open minded enough, but I didn't like it
Beetje experimenteel, veel van hetzelfde
Now this is what I'm here for. I'd not heard of this but loved it. It managed to sound both lowfi and incredibly well produced, simple and complex, with brilliant variety across genre. There were clear pop songs, punk, country, spoken word, jazz and much more. Plus the jackass theme popped up in the middle which made me think I was having a stroke temporarily.
This is OK, it doesn’t need to be on the list but it’s not offensive either. They have a cool sound and corona definitely leads the album in that regard but I don’t know it got a little fart smelly in the middle.

Good, but too long.
Where to start with this one? 80s punk, and like very punk-y punk. This thing was 81 minutes and 43 songs, so crunch the numbers and you get a very long album with an average song length under 2 minutes. And they're all a bit chaotic. I'm realizing that I struggle a bit with the more raw, unstructured punk bands, which this felt like to me. I do get the appeal, it's simple and \"real\". They're saying screw the establishment, we're going to have three dudes playing whatever we want and singing about bad shit that's happening. And honestly I appreciate someone doing something different at this time, there was a lot of crap getting made then too. One of the songs on here is literally called \"Do You Want New Wave or Do You Want the Truth?\", I take it they didn't love New Wave, I'm mostly with them). But man, it's hard to listen to an over an hour of this. The singer is really raw, there's not a ton going on musically that's super interesting, it's just a bit tough. I get the appeal, but it's not super \"enjoyable\" to just sit down and listen to, I think you need to be in a real specific headspace for this. It does seem to have had an impact on future punk though, this is still the fairly early-ish days of punk rock so I can see it being influential for what came later. The singer also died a very tragic death in a car accident which led to the band disbanding not long after this, which is a real shame. Don't like this one? It's fine, there's another one along in a minute. I've tried to love this several times down the years but it turns out I just like it quite a lot. Tight as anything, and really gets into the swing after about ten tracks or so, some gold here.
I recall seeing fIREHOSE in the late '80s, not having heard much about the Minutemen. It's a shame I never got around to listening to the Minutemen more before now. This is really good. At first, it just struck me as typical, unpolished, two-minutes (or less) punk, but the more I listened, the more I realized this is much more than "typical". 4 stars.

This was pretty great. Good energy and interesting lyrics. This kind of music isn't really my thing and it was way too long, but would probably be a low-key 5 star album if it wasn't for those two things.
It’s amazing how an album with this much songs and long runtime can still bring fresh stuff to the table. Cool! Songs are short and sweet, but it can feel a bit tiring with how many songs there are to get through. Still a good album with some neat ideas though!
Didn't have time to listen to it fully today, but it's already in probably my top 10 all time albums and I can recall most of the 43 songs from it anyway in my head, so who needs listening? (nvm i got a few songs in and listened to it all anyway) One of the most fun albums you'll ever listen to, punk rock with a side of funk and jazz influence. The guitar riffs and solos are insane, the bass lines are groovy as hell, the drumming is frantic. Tried about three times to get into this but it just couldn't keep my attention for a sustained time! Individual tracks were good but the whole 1h15m was just too much in one go. The jackass theme was unexpected! Highlights - #1 Hit Song, it's expected I'm gone, do you want new wave, political song for Michael Jackson, maybe partying will help, corona, Dr wu. Really appreciated when the politics emerged - if I was to be generous I'd look to revisit this again and really study the lyrics? But sonically it didn't capture me. 2.5* rounded up to 3
This era is in my sweet spot. It's like early Joe Jackson / The Police songs like Next To Me and crossed with Lou Reed / Tom Waits American stylings.
This was less hardcore than I was expecting. I like the quirkiness, jazz and funk influences, and, getting it just after the Mothers of Invention, I couldn’t help but notice the similarities with the short songs, weird, political lyrics and of course the guitar playing - but Boon is like Zappa on Steroids. Boon/s voice sounds a bit like Dave Thomas of Pere Ubu at times and the combination of funk and rock remind me a bit of what Red Hot chili Peppers sounded like in the early 80s.

Drums just crazy! As if the kit wants to escape this but the other instruments catch the same weird disease instead of catching the drums escapism. This sentence lacks sense as this record‘s is overflowing with itchy restlessness, ideas, sketches, bits and Not-Killed-Darlings. 3.4
This album could be a 5 if it was just instrumentals--very jammy and fun with a solid bass line throughout--but the lyrics and vocals are actively bad.

I have never heard any of this before and that's a fucking shame because this was so great. Fucking great. Why didn't I listen to this in my youth? Reevaluating my life. Wtf. Sigh. Tho---at least I've got it now, at 52. Never too late!!

Punk music that doesnt suck
Listened once. I liked some of the funk elements and enjoyed the topics of the songs. Issue I have is that as soon as a song has a rhythm, it ends. Wish they had added at least a minute more to each track. 3 for now, possibly a 4 after a re-listen.
The thing with this record is - it’s fucking amazing and also it’s way too long. There isn’t necessarily anything bad and I don’t know how I would edit it down but for the last 23 years I’ve known about this record, I’ve always been thought that. In some dimension, an edited version exists and it’s the best record of all time. In this dimension, it merely is great.

I liked the overall sound of the band. Loved the guitar; the singer often sounded like he'd had one too many beers and got up to sing karaoke. It was odd that all the songs ran into each other... hard to distinguish between one ending and another beginning. The lyrics leave a lot to be desired... "Twinkle twinkle, blah blah blah, E T C" I mean... 'You need the glory', wtf was that all about?? Overall, I liked it, but I wouldn't listen again.

Far too long, but pretty enjoyable. I think I would have preferred it slightly more if the twang on the bass was turned down.
Seemed like a high school battle of the bands. Singing is horrible. Bass and drums best part. Seemed like they went into the studio & messed around for a while and after 40 short songs gets very cumbersome. Also production seems very low quality, I get it, punk music, but come on it’s on the greatest albums of all time list? First album on the list I really found completely uninteresting & found no connection with it at all…but again I can respect some people can rock out to it, I guess.
As a whole I’m not a huge fan of this album. It’s a little aggressive and not very poetic in my opinion. I can respect it for what it is and I understand why people would like this kind of music. The guitar and drums are excellent and the number of awesome riffs they came up with for these songs is impressive.

By my usual standards, this would typically be way too long and way too samey. But this was my second time listening to this album in recent years, and on neither of those listens did I get bored. These are punk songs at their best: fast and furious, with clever basslines and attitude in spades. Sure, they could have cut a dozen songs or so and they wouldn't necessarily be missed, but the whole thing still comes together so cohesively that I'm not complaining. Good shit!
Garage band that's not very good that probably has a cult following that is very annoying.
I will reserve judgment, but this is a 40-track album, and I am not a fan of that. Some of these seem like they just had the band in the studio doing random riffs and whatnot, then decided to just put it in. It's okay, but feels unfinished. A high 2/5
No album should be 75 mins long. At that length you’d think there would some semblance of melody somewhere, but not here. I get that in 1984 that Double Nickels on the Dime must have hit hard for some people, but I’m not sure it’s aged all that well. 5.1/10
Never heard of this album or group, so I was pleasantly surprised to enjoy it. A very post-punk sound with hints of Velvet Underground and Primus is always considered a must-listen. 4/5.

I appreciate the style that they were trying to do. Acoustic punk is hard to accomplish. Some songs stood out, but the album as a whole fell short.

This is the kind of punk I could get into. It's pretty fun and puts a lot of different ideas together cohesively. This particular album felt extremely long though, and not all of it hit.

I had never heard about Minutemen prior to 1986, when I heard a song by Minutemen's successor band fIREHOSE on a local college station and went out and bought the album. I loved fIREHOSE - Mike Watt is an amazing bassist - one of the best in rock history. and found out that Watt and George Hurley were in Minutemen and that the lead singer had died in a car crash (how I found this out without the internet back then I have no idea - maybe it was the SST connection). I quickly ran out and purchased What Makes A Man Start Fires, which is the album before this one. I could never get into it. As a result, I never listened to Double Nickels On The Dime before today. I enjoyed it quite a bit - it was much more accessible than What Makes A Man Start Fires, and I could see the musical seeds of fIREHOSE being planted. I also never realized the Jackass theme was a Minutemen song. The album is a bunch of really short songs, so I think it is better listened to as a whole experience rather than selecting particular favorite songs.

A lot of songs, a few instrumentals and it's not bad but is certainly not something I would enjoy. By all understanding, I should enjoy The Minutemen and Double Nickels on the Dime, but it's just "eh" for me. While I enjoy all of the songs being short, it also causes me to think these aren't fully fleshed out ideas, though obviously many others disagree.
This was pretty great. Even considering it has 43 tracks, there usually seem to be enough creative ideas to keep each little snippet interesting. Reminds me of the meat puppets album we had a little
vocals: 1/5 instrumentals: 4/5 I liked the jazz influence. I'd appreciate the album much, much more if it had only instrumentals.

I went straight from an 8 track disco album to this sprawling 40+ track monster. A very, very strange album. Biting funk guitar, punk-country vibes, an unexpected appearance of the Jackass theme music. It feels like the roughness of the tracks is a deliberate choice, but there's enough variety and depth that I'll want to come back to it. I've a feeling I've just scratched the surface with this one...

I'm pretty torn here. This wasn't a bad album, but I did tire of it by the end as it was long and 43 tracks started to feel a bit of a chore. Okay, the tracks are all very short, but even so it did begin to drag. Some bits stood out and I had a gut feeling that I might like this a lot more with repeated listens. I also experienced a bit of snobbery, as Hardcore is essentially American punk and that just feels wrong! The half-spoken vocals were probably the weak point for me. I liked the music, but there wasn't anything to ever grab hold of due to the rapid delivery of short songs. Ultimately, this album slipped away from me a bit.

I had never heard of Minutemen befroe and there was only one track (out of 45) from Double Nickels On The Dime that I recognized ("Corona" because it was the theme song for Jackass). There are so many short tracks on this album. It feels like a punk album but not quite the same kind of punk as the Ramones or the Sex Pistols. "June 16th" was my favorite track, perhaps because it wasn't burdened with lyrics. Several tracks got a definite "do not like" because of the lyrics and vocals. A shorter album with a selection of the tracks could have got a higher rating from me. With so many tracks on this album and so many that I would skip on a re-listen, Double Nickels On The Dime does not reach "I guess it was okay".

HL: I don't even know (listening to Side Mike) I feel like whatever I didn't get out of the micro-songs in Wire's "Pink Flag" is somehow present here. Even though the stop/start jerkiness also exists, the songs combined feel like they're moving somewhere (at 55 mph :0) I want to go on a road trip now (after 40 more minutes of this album) Just pumping the brakes a bit here. I think this is an artistic accomplishment, and very fun at times, but the length did hamper my enjoyment a little. August 1, 2023
Liked it more than I thought I would based on the description of the group
This is a pretty good album. I don't get to complain about album length after giving a 5/5 to "69 Love Songs", but I'll say that I'd like more diversity in the songs. They all started to blend together halfway through and there weren't any curveballs that broke up the flow as with "69 Love Songs". I'm probably going to listen to this again, get completely hooked, and then regret this rating, but a 3/5 for a first listen.

Luke told me about this album and it's an absolute banger, I love it. I even bought one of those books about great albums about it, haven't read it yet though. I really like the short songs, love the idea of going 'yeah we've got a great song, wanna enjoy it? TOO LATE that's all ya getting, NEXT!'
Double Nickels on the Dime is the third album by American punk trio Minutemen. It's a double album containing punk music with elements of rock, funk, country, and jazz. This is Minutemen's best-selling album and it's also considered one of the best American rock albums from the 80's. It was critically popular at release, but being released by an independent record label meant it was hard to gain commercial interest - especially overseas. This album inspired other punk bands to ignore the set beliefs of punk being hardcore and freed them to make exactly the type of music they wanted to. This was a fun punk album chock-full of quick but great songs. I really liked this album so I'm on the lookout for more albums with music like this. Get your fill of Double Nickels on the Dime to be transported back to the mid-80's!
The best thing about this is the drumming! I’m not super into the voice, and it’s way too long and bloated with songs, in my opinion. Corona, aka the Jackass theme, is a classic, though.

Double Nickels on the Dime is one of the best double albums ever together with Sign O The Times, The Wall, Exile on Main St, Day Dream Nation, Tusk, Blonde on Blonde, Tago Mago, All Things Must Pass, The River etc. It is better than the fIREHOSE album generated by the 1001albumsgeneator some time ago (even though fIREHOUSE was a very decent band as well of course).
This sounded quite interesting at first, with some excellent guitar and drum work on display, and energetic vocal delivery. After a while, however, things started to get boring, one song after the other sounding more or less the same. When the album is quite long, at least some of the many tracks should hit home to keep me engaged. So, even though there are some good moments to enjoy, I am unlikely to seek this out for future listening.
Reminds me of Orange by Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. In comparison, a bit less raw, a bit more subtle, much more varied. I love it, though it misses a true flow and is too lengthy.

There is a LOT going on in this album, lots of it good, some of it absolutely not.
43 tracks is too many for any album! Admittedly, they're all less than 3 minutes long, but it still adds up to 74 minutes. That said, I was pleasantly surprised listening to it (having kinda written it off because of the structure), there's a really nice variety of styles in there ranging from all-out punk through jazz and some spoken word type stuff. It's very political, angry without being too shouty and, whilst 74 minutes is definitely too long, it doesn't drag too much. Probably could have benefitted from cleaning up a bit and taking some of the filler out, and misses any real standout hits (possibly because most of the songs don't get a chance to get going), but well worth a listen. 3 still, but a higher 3 than Elvis.

44 songs over two full-length albums tell you the Minutemen were far from their moniker. Chock full of punk rock revolutionism they deliver their message in style and in whatever way they fucking feel like it.

Most songs were good, sounding like RHCP or Primus or Violent Femmes. If they had picked a sound I think they would have been more popular. I hated that they were so short, you just start to get into a song and it's over.
Pas du tout étonnant que cet album ait un statut comme il a. C'est clairement une oeuvre qui a aidé à redéfinir la scène punk. Les compositions sont super solides, les mélanges de sons sont en avance sur leur temps. Même si l'album est un peu long, il n'y a pas vraiment de moment ennuyant et les changements de styles gardent le tout intéressant. Définitivement à revisiter. 9/10

Enjoyed the album, mainly for reasons outside of the music. Some of the political motifs I enjoyed, others I attributed to the group being white youth in the 80’s. Through it all though is an enjoyable album that harkens back to our times of teenage angst however they looked. I may not be able to relate to them so much as people, but the emotion conveyed in this album is something we all share and I believe experience. Won’t revisit the entire album most likely, but definitely walked away with new personal favorite tracks.
Minutemen are men of their word on time but quality of their talent shone through on each track.

This one surprised me when I read punk, what it ended up being was a journey through a lot of really fun solid songs, this album will be in my rotation for the rest of my life.

A bit of musical ADD with how many songs are crammed into the 74 minute run time. Interesting in how many style are captured and interpreted. Difficult to listen to at times
Brings all the fun early new wave/post-punk can bring: the bass, short songs instead of 10 minutes long boring solo's, energy and variation. But in its type not the best I find, so 3 stars
3.5 - extra .5 for jackals theme
The Minutemen were well documented for trying to get their money's worth with both recording and touring. This is no finer example with an absolute boatload of songs most never staying longer than a 1:30. The problem comes where a lot of these feel more like a collection of ideas rather than a coherent album of songs. However listening to this album you can hear a lot of the starting points and foundational ideas that permeated through the college alternative and indie of the following two decades. A lot of bands took this collection of ideas and made whole careers out of them.

I mean, there are albums that are worse than 80 minutes of punk. And the instrumentals are a bit interesting in some places so I guess it's fine. I'll probably never listen to this again.

I made it just past the song with a surprise tik tok sound in it and threw in the towel. I already hate spoken word so the combo of that with 70 more minutes of jazz punk stuff was just too much.
Finally the list gets something right. This album might be all over the place, but the pacing works because of how frantic and disjointed the very nature of the music is.
Hot and riffy (but also super scrappy and excessively talky), this feels like punk made slightly more intelligible. One saw their final show (Charlotte, 12/13/85) so should probably round up but not sure all the jokes land today and one's simply not all the way there with this anymore. Not even sure one would rate it over fIREHOSE's best.

Not amazing. Maybe one or two okay songs
"Twinkle, twinkle Blah, blah, blah" 40+ songs??!! But, it's punk, post punk, hard-core punk, so each song is reasonably short. It's still a longer than average album, but not bad. Most of the songs are good, some really good and others kinda sound like the Red Hot Chili Peppers (a little bit). Overall, I enjoyed it. Standouts: #1 Hit Song (Blah Blah Blah!), Don't Look Down, But really there are a lot of great little songs on here! Overall : 4/5

This album blew my mind. Almost 80 minutes and 43 tracks. So many unique riffs and styles put into such short amounts of time made for an album that had my attention for the full run. That bass player as well was something else. He managed to hold his ground the entire album switching between rhythm and melody. Although not every song was perfect (would be impossible with 43 songs) nothing on it felt unnecessary or took away from the experience 5/5
Yeah, this album rips. Back in my middle school days, I had Corona on my first MP3 player because of Jackass. Never bothered listening to the whole album, but this is about as authentic as rock gets. Don't be intimidated by the 43 tracks; they go by quick, and this one doesn't slow down.
The embarrassment I feel having never experienced this record prior to this exercise is outweighed only by the immense joy brought forth by the knowledge that I’ll have it in my life for the rest of my days.
I was terrified at first at how long this album was, but the short tracks make it better. I loved the guitar and bass riffs in each track, but I didn't have a specific track that I was absolutely amazed by, and its probably because of the length. I admire the dedication to compiling this, though. Fave track(s): The Glory of Man, Untitled Song for Latin America
This wasn’t as expected. A pleasant surprise. I didn’t have time to play both albums this time but got the gist. Put me in mind of Big Flame & Beefheart, which is no bad thing. I have said this before but one to revisit when I have time to get through both ‘albums’ and give the lyrics a bit more attention.
Where has this even come from? It's completely new to me, although I don't think any punk album should ever be a double. Apart from the Rock 'n' Roll Swindle, obvs. Bailed after 14 tracks - the ideal length.

I thought this album was a lot of fun to listen to. I like his a voice I like the sound it is very unique and innovative. I will definitely go back to this!

This album is like if you took a good jam band and a good punk band and put them together to create a great band. Love the overall sound - seems ~20 years ahead of it's time, reminds me of some of the heavier jam bands I enjoy. Even though most of it sounds similar, I never felt like I was listening to the same song over and over like many other punk bands. There were maybe a handful of songs I didn't enjoy much, which is pretty impressive for an album with 43 songs. Will definitely be listening again soon. 8.8/10

43 tracks?!? Wow ... Luckily, most of them are on the short side, mostly even under two minutes. Musically, the songs walk the line between rock and punk, with and most are distinct from each other. Really, the record is perfectly fine, but it somehow fails to engage me. Maybe it's just not my thing. 2.5/5

Double Nickels do make a Dime
Very weird punk rock album with strong jazz and a little funk influence. The bass is busy and dominant and the drumming is a also a focus. All the songs are extremely short but the album is very long, so there is a lot to uncover. Overall I wouldn’t say it’s great but definitely interesting.
Never hear of Minutemen before. They have a fun sound punk/new wave sound with jazz and funk influences. They sound very ahead of their time. I think given further listening they may be a 4, but right now they are a 3.
This was good, even though some songs are similar they almost all have unique guitar riffs which is impressive with 40+ tracks. Is it punk, I don't think so also doesn't matter.

Goed punkalbum, maar ik ben geen punkfan. Te korte nummers, en te chaotisch voor mijn smaak. 2 sterren voelt als te weinig omdat ik goed kan inzien waarom mensen dit wel leuk vinden. Maar ik vind het persoonlijk gewoon niet leuk om naar te luisteren en kan het dus niet hoger geven.
Enigszins obscuur punkalbum met afwisselend sterke en minder sterke nummers. De tracklist begint beter dan hij eindigt. leukste nummer: Corona "Corona" was de introsong van Jackass en is een persoonlijke blast from the past. "The World According to Nouns" en het instrumentele "Cohesion" zijn honorable mentions.
It’s the diamond of the hardcore movement. I especially like the “singing”. That snarkiness aside, the trio of guitar, bass, and drums is remarkably kicky. Very enjoyable.

I did not understand why this album was on the list until..." Jackass," and I finally got the reason. It makes a lot of sense now (🤪). But seriously, I enjoyed the album a little bit; I guess they were a bit ahead of their time when they released this album in 84, but for my 2023 ears, it sounds a little bit old-fashion punk/post-punk that did not get old in the best form. It's enjoyable but forgettable at the same level.

Punk with plenty of actual music, experimental and otherwise, thrown in. Hints of 60's/70's psychadelia provide just that twist of garnish that every album needs. Never heard of this before today but it's definitely going on the list for the next time I go vinyl diving.

not too boring light punk
One of the only good double albums in my opinion. Short songs as well so they could have made 4 decent albums out of the ideas they had. Not their fault they inspired the red hot chilli peppers

Quite like the scattergun approach with so many ultra-short songs, however the novelty does wear off after a while. Too many songs that are not well developed or tail off. Would have preferred an album with half the songs but twice the length of each song
45 1-2 minute long songs, gone as soon as they started, all quite similar and forgettable for me. Punk just isn't my genre, hey? Or at least not this side of the genre.
It's a gimmick, but it's a cool gimmick. You don't like a track? Just wait, it'll be over real soon. My major issue with it is that a lot of them seemed like first drafts. Best track: Corona
This is one of two albums on this list that I very much enjoy but was dreading a little bit (the other being The Magnetic Fields 69 Love Songs). Its a work bordering on genuis, so packed with ideas and switching genres at such a frenetic pace that it barely gives you time to draw breath. What other record could have the flamenco inspired instrumental 'Cohesion' right after the funk/punk staple that is 'Viet Nam.' But it's ..alot. Who writes a 43 song long, hour and fifteen minute album with a straight face and without an ounce of pretention or irony? Minutemen bloody well did and the world is a better place for it. But it's ...alot. I'm sure the ghost of D. Boon will be ok with me putting this down and appreciating it from a distance for another 10 years.
I love the less is more approach of this album. Some of these songs are blink and you'll miss it fast, but it's worth it to pay attention because it's so much more musically impressive than you might imagine it could be. It's also shambolic, loose, lyrically incisive, punk in the all best ways. I also love the implied sense of travel, like we're flipping through radio stations in the car, ca. 1984. You've got a little bit of every flavor in there, but it works somehow - post-hardcore, jazz, jam band, funk, even a little Laurel Canyon and Bakersfield sound. Not to mention some surprisingly elegant acoustic guitar work. I'm immediately inclined to give this a 4 because some songs are definitely better than others. "Side Chaff" is very much just that. But as a cleverly conceived and executed concept of an album, and all around fun listen, this is pretty brilliant. Really fun. It's funky, and they do some weird stuff. It definitely overstays its welcome though. I'm not sure if the back half is actually worse or if it's just too long.

I really wasn’t sure about this the first time I listened but I listened again and started to get into it. I really liked Jesus Tequila. Probably not good enough for 4* but a solid 3*

First half of this album is excellent, some really great stuff and some great Watt bass lines. Then it gets a bit spotty, nothing truly bad but nothing amazing. With some edits it's a 5 star album easily but as is it's not perfect.
The jazz and funk with some jammy riffs were unexpected to me originally (meaning in the mid-eighties). I remember when this came out figuring it would be more punk, considering the Black Flag/SST connection, and not being very into it until after several listens. It can be a bit of a slog to get through in a single listen, depends on one’s mood. So many good ones, but some favorites: Cohesion a folky, Spanish, guitar instrumental piece? Who would figure this would be wedged in here? But it works. Corona always sounds like it was maybe a template for Uncle Tupelo. History Lesson Part 2 was barely history when it was recorded. And more, but I’m tired of typing. RIP d. boone
There's a lot of good stuff on this record. My only complaint is it's long. They really wanted to fill 4 sides and I think that hurts the record.
I was trying to give this one a 5, because there are 5* worth of great songs on this. But it's too long. Just a *little* bit of editing would've made this a much stronger album. It's still great, though!
I dig it
Rock album with jazz influences, tackling topics such as political war, lgbtq+, racism, with humor and abstract words. In certain songs it sounded like poetry slam or random words being spoken, sometimes through spacey beats others with rock and roll.
Brand new to me. An enjoyable listen. Can clearly see its influence on the likes of Pavement & RHCP.
I loved this, the entire album mixes punk with jazz and blues, with a very heavy and special guitar on every song, scoring/marking the beat everytime. Basically i love the guitar on this album.

"Our Band Could Be Your Life" This is a close to perfect an album as possible for my tastes. Perfect blend of punk and melody and most importantly heart. Another of those bands that I regrettably only got properly into a few years ago
How do you even begin reviewing something like this? Apparently, Minutemen wanted to have the overarching concept of the album be their cars. They definitely succeeded since the entire thing sounds like it's being played from a poor quality car stereo. And I mean that in the best possible way. It's difficult to highlight specific tracks, but the run on Side Mike from 'The Big Foist' to 'The Glory of Man' over both 'Bod Bows to Math' and 'Corona' is exceptionally good. The folk-punky 'Corona' opening with the words "The people will survive" was a bit eery. With a runtime of more than 70 minutes, it really is impressive how fun this record is to indulge in. Finally, I have to give 4 stars for making me laugh out loud from a song title only - 'Political Song for Michael Jackson to Sing'.
Equal parts shitty punk and prolific jazz band. What a feat! Exceeding 70 minutes I am amazed how fun this entire thing is. Time simply flies by in the company of Minutemen. Sidenote: "Political Song for Michael Jackson to Sing" might be the greatest song title ever.

Местами можно даже услышать гитарные соло уровня самого Джими Хендрикса. Из-за такого разнообразия этот довольно длинный альбом ощущается не таким уж и большим, особенно если учитывать довольно скромную длину отдельных треков. Я полностью проникся атмосферой какого-то похуизма и бездельничества, которую вырисовывают здешние тексты, которые в свою очередь даже не поются, а скорее агрессивно читаются. Также стоит отметить, что сама формула, по которым выстраивались треки здесь, чисто панковская, но изобилие звучаний из различных жанров превращают этот альбом в нечто иное, и даже несмотря на юморные и ироничные тексты, я не могу сказать, что этот альбом - чистый панк. Это скорее ассорти из различной музыки, которое упаковано в панковскую формулу. (9)

A lot of things happened
The songs are mostly really great. Like, really really great. But they're just too short and I don't have time to really appreciate them. Also, 43 songs? Guys, you got to make choices in life, cut this shit in half. Still, great songs and great musicianship, but way too long of an album to truly enjoy it.

The problem with this album is not the music, but how it was delivered to us : 43 little songs over 1h15 duration. Damn. How is it possible to enjoy?
A very rare offering, because it combines two things that are not often gathered in the same album: a sprawling, adventurous tracklisting, here combined with individual songs that are concise, "economical", unpretentious and yet affecting to a level you wouldn't suspect of on the very first listens. You just need to pay attention to the details. If you do so, you'll eventually realize that Minutemen were not your usual run-of-the-mill punk rockers, but skilled musicians and songwriters who had a surprising ability for nuance and subtlety when they wanted to (and refrained from digressing a little too much). Plus, most of the absurd lyrics, as cryptic as they are, are either funny or intriguing. "Corona", "Vietnam", "History Lesson part 2", "Cohesion", "Two Beads At The End" or "Jesus And Tequila" are the highlights here, but this double-album is best experienced as a whole, as long and meandering as it is. Minutemen were the missing link between Captain Beefheart and Black Flag, or the one between Frank Zappa and Fugazi. As such, they deserve to be remembered today. It's a tragedy that D. Boon died so young in that van accident, or that Mike Watt never became more famous afterwards. If Minutemen had kept going, who knows what sort of original, idiosyncratic, fully personal music they would have played next? Their end was a sad loss for punk rock, and maybe even for other genres. Fortunately, we still have this record today. I'll admit I was definitely worried going into this one, considering the sheer amount of songs. However it turned out to be a nice assortment of short punk rock tunes. Funky and jazzy, and honestly a bit of a pleasure to listen to. Also, I guess this is where the Jackass theme came from. Favourite: Corona
I really enjoyed the vibe. It's got a long of songs but I think they were all really good. I think the later half kind of got a little too "I get it" if that makes any sense, I think this could've benefited from cutting about half the album and making this a super cohesive and engaging 25-40 minute album, but it's not too big of an issue. 3.5/5

I only know Minutemen as those fellas that did the Jackass theme. I was surprised to see them in the book of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die as I never knew they were that reputable. I’m interested to hear more of their work. Songs I already knew: Corona Favourites: Corona, #1 Hit Song, Toadies This was not at all what I expected going into a Minutemen album. Based solely on Corona, I expected hillbilly redneck rock but this isn’t the case at all. They often reminded me of Primus, but less jarring. Primus can sometimes be a little too strange for my tastes, whereas Minutemen toe that line but never cross it. There are 43 songs on this album, yet it’s only 75 minutes long - often tracks can bleed into each other and you don’t even realise that a new one has started. I’m not sure the reasoning for this, as what actually sounds as one recognisable song is actually 2-3 tracks. Maybe it’s to feed into the Minute part of the name. Overall, much better than I expected.

Such a special album. Maybe I’m talking out of my ass here, but this reminds me a lot of the Beach Boys’ SMILE: the songs on the album are less individual songs, but rather short musical phrases that can be rearranged or combined to form longer musical sentences. There’s like 43 songs on DNotD - most of them are very short and unrefined. I think if the band took any one of them and polished it, you’d have an individual song of popular music, but they didn’t. The songs instead flow together, creating different moods and emotions. I don’t mind that they’re short! I love just putting this on in the background and sinking into the music.

Whole thing sounds like a jam session - in a good way
Ok this wasnʻt bad! I was nervous going into it with the 1h14m playtime and the hardcore genre being pretty inaccessible to me in the past. But thereʻs quite a bit to like here. Itʻs extremely genre diverse. There are cool jazzy rhythms and strange spoken word lyrics. These guys are skilled instrumentalists. Nothing was too grating or off-putting. Nothing blew me away either, but I appreciated the experimentation and the way they completely shifted their sound between songs. Like Jacob was saying, I definitely need to sit with this one for a while longer, especially to digest the lyrics. Some great lyrical gems stood out, including: "I stand for language. I shout for truth. I stand for history. I am a cesspool." Some incredible titles here also: A Political Song for Michael Jackson to Sing, God Bows to Math, and The Big Foist. Also I canʻt wait to show my mom the song Toadies, cause thatʻs one of her favorite words. We learned it together when I was studying vocab for the GRE. 3.3/5
I feel enriched by listening to this, and there are some surprisingly touching moments. Pictures from a scene I was never a part of..: feels like a time capsule, and I’m at the show they’re playing these in. As an album, it’s hard to recommend because it’s so long, and there are a lot of records that could have been cut. But it shines bright where it does! I’ll be chewing on this one for a while, it’s not digestible in just a few bites.
