Reviews (page 5 of 8)

A grab bag of fragmented ideas that range from jagged social protests to meandering ideas that float off into the ether. For one song to be as directed and tense as "Viet Nam" to immediately transition into the soothing, rolling solo guitar on "Cohesion" is certainly chaotic, but it somehow works? It's kinda like they said the rules for this album is that there are no rules. Wanna do some instrumental noodling for a song? Sure! Wanna demand widescale policy change in America for another song? Go ahead! The start of "Shit From and Old Notebook" was a highlight for me, as I too experience similar stream-of-consciousness anger at the nature of advertising. "Corona" did jolt me out of the doldrums at that point in the tracklisting, it's like the band very intentionally tried to form their version of a pop-leaning rock son, and it worked. Unfortunately, this meant that most everything after lost a bit of it's magic. Reading more on Mike Watt, it seems like this man just lives to create. So many bands, so many albums, it is reflected in his musical style here -- pure flow of ideas, from head and heart straight to mouth. Most of my points go to this album being a very peculiar project, breaking the mold for how a western music record could be structured. As for the musical content? Mehhhhh. Fun and/or invigorating for small moments at best. 3/5, no need to return to this one for casual listening

like flipping channels on a rock ‘n’ roll TV. Was any song longer than 2 1/2 minutes?

Interesting.

I can't believe I've got another double album this week. Luckily, "DNotD" is actually better than that country album. The songs are very short, with the longest being 3 minutes long. My favourite was "History Lesson Part 2". Unfortunately, the length of the album and the subpar songs prevent it from being a classic. 3 stars for "Double Nickels on the Dime".

very bloated but always interesting, classic punk sound

Got a lot going on. Bunch of short tracks that are either OK or okay.

First listen

Absolutely didn't need to be a double album. It was so unbalanced. Some songs were really tight and fun to listen to, others sounded like they were just screwing around. The good songs were good though, so 3 stars

I like this, but I would like it a lot more if the songs were more developed and there were WAY less of them.

Some real gems and I love the overall feel but it’s also overlong and undercooked. (3.5)

Yeah that was both expansive and forgettable 2/5

When you call yourself Minutemen, there's an expectation that your songs are going to be short. And they are - the problem is there are 43 of them. I liked a lot of this, but it could have easily lost a good to 10-15 tracks.

Favorite Track: King’s Lead Hat

Never heard of these guys. These guys are interesting. Not what I expected. Cool stuff though.

Very long album. Some good songs though. Nothing super catchy or dull. Just a good groove the whole way.

Hectic and over before you know it. But also some nice music.

Jackass

This record is a sprawling, chaotic scrapbook of ideas. Most of the songs feel like half-finished thoughts or quick, explosive sketches. There’s a LOT of ground to cover. But funny, I actually like the idea and execution of short songs. Does it always take 3+ minutes to get a message out there? I suppose not. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions Viet Nam Cohesion Corona

This might be the longest album I've ever seen. It's good though. Not my favorite album in the world but it was definitely enjoyable.

I like this album cover. This guy has a secret for sure. Or he's riding high as hell. I definitely enjoy some of the noodly, jammy parts. Other parts are pretty punky and lame. Sounds somewhat like Primus at times. The Jackass theme song was a funny surprise. A good amount of stuff to like in this album, but it certainly lost me many times. At 80 minutes and 43 songs, the good is not enough to bring this to 4 territory, but it was enjoyable overall.

This album was exhausting to listen to. Songs 1-11ish were pretty good 12-18 were a slog Was never in a million years expecting to hear the Jackass theme song on here with Corona, that certainly put some juice back into the album. Continued to slog on after that with an absolutely diabolical amount of songs at 43 and length at an hour and 15. This is still quite a high 3 because even know it was crazy long and not really my type of music that i enjoy. It still seems like it never got old from the uniqueness and variety of all of the songs.

Weird in a good way

I think all of the songs are quick and to the point. Never fully won me over. Thought it dragged on a bit too long. 3/5

penny nickle dime

I’ve never heard of Minutemen before, but I’ve generally enjoyed the punk albums from the eighties that I’ve reviewed so far, so there’s a good chance this album will land with me. Looking at the track listing, at 45 songs in a little over eighty minutes, this should be a pretty interesting ride. Double Nickels on the Dime is fine, and while it wasn’t really my cup of tea, I think that Minutemen achieved a couple of really noteworthy things on this album. First, the overall sound of the album is incredibly cohesive, even with its four somewhat separate parts. With all of the influences that Minutemen draw on, I was really surprised at just how consistent this album sounded. Their use of jazz to craft their song structures wasn’t really what I like hearing in music, but I thought it was interesting, and it kept things fresh over the course of this album. Secondly, I thought that Minutemen did a great job showing that punk isn’t as narrow of a genre as some people make it out to be. You can tell that the sound was crafted by the band, and not by the producer, keeping with the do-it-yourself ethos. Lastly, I thought that Minutemen all worked together really well as musicians. There was just something about their arrangements that had a certain harmony, despite the chaos that their sound conveys. There weren’t really any songs that stood out to me (although I recognized “Corona” from Jackass), but the album worked well as a whole. This isn’t the sort of thing I gravitate towards when it comes to music, but I appreciate what Minutemen achieved on this album.

New one on me. Some cool grooves, great bass playing, cool guitars. Vocals yell a little more than I'd like, lyrics are... a juvenile attempt at expressing opinions and stuff, whatever. Production value feels low budget, but raw which is cool in its way. Enough rocking and groove to be enjoyable despite the singing and lyrics. Oh and for some reason the Jackass theme song.

Good but quite long. 3.5

I respect it, and I like that some of the songs sound Talking Heads-esque, but it's a bit of a slog to try to get through in one sitting.

Aivan kelpo levy. Vähän levotonta omaan makuun, muttei kuitenkaan liiaksi.

I really love a lot of music in here but D Boon’s singing just isn’t for me. I also think it is just too long. I feel like this is a 3.5 but I’m rounding down.

Punk unadulterated and pure bliss

This was fun. Never listened before. Early on I was struck by the influence must have had on chili peppers.

Surprising band. Did not know about the range of music they play.

A few good ones on here, but I could largely go without hearing again

Quite hard to get the grip on this, with over 40 songs in about an hour. Such a weird album. Kind of groovy, but would need multiple listens to get the full picture of what the hell just happened and i'm not quite sure if i was enough impressed to be up for the task in hand. Lots of respect for this kind of stuff anyway!

Every album with 45 songs makes me really suspicious. This album was such a weird thing that I decided to overcome my doubts and say it's a decent album. It's also funny that a band and album that I'm completely unfamiliar with have a familiar song called Corona. I recognized the song and it took me several hours to figure out where it was from. How can a person remember the theme song from the Jackass series?

I had only heard of the name, except I think there was a cover of one of their songs on a Sebadoh album I had. It's interesting, punk but like jazzy also.

Interesting! Glad to have encountered it and to have heard something new. I'm not so into the metal/punk slap bass, jangly guitars and swift changes thing, it just doesn't do it for me, although it was interesting to hear in this more punk rock context that felt like it bridged something in that direction in Beefheart and the way it develops later. The tracks that were doing other stuff (sudden surf rock! Ooh, oddly sincere accoustic moment) I really rather liked, and there's an open playfulness in the lyrics and approach that's fun! Even within all the irony. Overall though, too long imo and lots that I just wasn't that into.

This album felt like going to Costco and trying to eat dinner from all the samples. You go cart to cart and get some good bites, but every once in a while you're eating some weird fiber bar that you end up tossing in the trash at the next stop. I liked a lot of this record, but just too many fiber bars to really create a cohesive and fully pleasant experience. Also, 43 tracks is way too many. 5.5-6/10 Standouts: Cohesion

When I was young and learning about guitar, the minutemen were all through the guitar magazines. But I could never find a track to listen to. And while It’s true D Boon is a member of the 27 club, the band rightly pays attention to his death but it’s not a trauma porn thing so an extra point there. I first heard of them a few years after his death. So, after all these years, how does it hold up? It’s a bit blah. It’s got all the faults of a double album and few of the strengths. It’s not quite the musicianship of say Tom Petty or REM or the pixies. Also having it country restricted irriatated me. I found it on YouTube. Stupid. (Not the band’s fault, I guess.) I think 2.5 stars. Including the extra for not exploiting trauma porn.

It's good. I won't say great for me. I'm not much of a punk fan but the jazz / folk influences kept it fresh. I liked it well enough.

These guys clearly listened to a lot of early Talking Heads. They have good ideas, but it's maddening to listen to 43 short tracks. I know it's the punk mindset to not care, but they should have developed some of those good ideas into full tracks.

Somehow, this is completely new to me—even though I was sentient, and even paying attention, when it came out. I appreciate that a punk band doesn’t have to sound like the stereotypical PUNK band. Punk is really just about freedom and, well, some kind of DIY ethos. That’s all here. Still, I’d probably enjoy a sound with a little more (stereotypical?) screaming. Screaming can be musical, y’know? Is this? “This Ain’t No Picnic” is probably my favorite song on the album. There’s some good screaming there. Hmm.

A very interesting experience listening to this album, firstly didn’t realise this is where jackass got their theme song, secondly I thought I was going to hate this album when it started but it got more fun, but I feel that is the biggest downside of the album, there are more than enough really good song to have a short really strong album, but this album had so many moments of songs that I wanted to skip

overall very interesting sound and how they blend different genres but it felt like 5 hours

A decent album if you like really short songs. 3 stars or C-.

6/10… punk / college rock

This was weird but fun. I am a lot more tolerant of experimental songs when they are this short.

For an album as long as this I have fairly little to say. It’s a solid punk record with some great lyrics sprinkled in and some solid instrumentation but far from my favorite punk record

Took a few songs to get into it, but once I was I stayed till the end.

An experimental and idea-packed album that breaks all the rules of what punk can be. It’s energetic, playful, and politically sharp, but also fragmented and challenging. While it’s undeniably important and original, it just doesn’t quite click with me personally. 3/5

Enjoyed while eating my morning chocolate mousse. Could imagine a lot of these songs on the Brassic soundtrack. Fave tracks: Cohesion, Do You Want New Wave Or The Truth, Nature Without Man, Corona, a bit heavy on the ears for me by the end of it

“Hey, wait a minute. That’s the Jackass theme”. I wonder how many times those words or something similar have been uttered when someone gets to “Corona” for the first time. For obvious reasons, I have to say that one is my favorite. This is a crazy album. 43 songs, 1 hour and 14 minutes is so much. The good news is that it never gets boring. There’s a lot of different genres and fun things going on in this album. The bad news is that I’m never going to remember any of these songs because they’re all so short, and some of them are either forgettable or outright bad. I really wish at least some of these songs were given a second to breathe, because all of them are quite good, with very few exceptions. The singer is nothing to write home about, but he’s pretty good, no complaints in that department. The Punk Rock aspects are also all pretty good, occasionally bordering on, but never quite reaching “Hard” status. I think I’m going to put this one at a 3.9, it’s really good but never QUITE reaches the level of extraordinary.

I’m not quite sure how to feel about this album. It loses a star automatically because it’s 43 songs long!!!! and over an hour. And while the songs were cool mostly, they just weren’t long enough to actually get into them. To me it felt like an album of samples of songs. Just little bits to get a feeling of how they sound. A few of them I really enjoyed and would have liked to have listened to them longer than a minute and thirty seconds. Cohesion, One Reporters Opinion, and Corona were good. Oh and let’s not forget The Roar of the Masses Could be Farts. There’s definitely something special about these fellas. I think 3 stars is fair.

Twenty cents.

Interesting idea making an album with shorter pieces in a variety of different punk styles. But few really hit the mark.

I really like parts of this but the run time is ridiculous. Trim this down to like 40 minutes and it would be a stellar album.

A super unique listen. While it didn’t resonate with me as much as it has with others I respect it’s brilliance.

raczej bez uniesien ale mial przyjemne momenty... duzo takich przypadkow...

good punky album with short songs, sort of bled into each other

Very mixed album. When it's good it's very good. Low 3.

• 3/5 • Liked it better than I remembered • if only they could sing . . .

Bonus points for jackass song

Ooh I don’t know if I’m gonna like this Ok this isn’t bad Hey the jackass theme song! 43 songs in 74 minutes is schizophrenic It’s now gone on too long That wasn’t bad

This is one I want to like more than I do. It’s one of my favorite album titles and History Lesson Part 2 is a fantastic song. I liked Corona too but the rest doesn’t do much for me and there’s so much of it.

A lot to listen to. Kind of sparse sounding. For some reason it reminded me of the Violent Femmes.

Didn't love it, Didn't hate it!

Cool stuff I think I need another listen. Interesting hearing the jackass theme out in the wild

A lot of interesting riffs and grooves on this, but overall it feels like a rambling mess. Many of the songs feel like they didn't know how to end them or when a new part was happening. This makes everything feel shoddy in the songwriting department. But there are moments of brilliance, and the vibe is cool; it really feels like you're in the live room with them while tape was rolling.

Enjoyed it overall. Not a huge fan of the vocals.

An interesting album for sure. Blends elements of Punk with Funk, Jazz, and even country at points. Most of the tracks are pretty sparse, with the instruments feeling loosely connected and everything being pretty simple. That’s not a bad thing, if anything it sets the Minutemen apart from other punk acts, especially with how little distortion or general loudness there is in this album. It definitely has it’s loud moments, and a song like Corona show that the band is still pretty good at writing a more traditional rock song. However, there are 49 songs on this album, for a 74 minute runtime. This is way too long. There are good tracks throughout, but also a lot of forgettable tracks. I’m glad I listened, but I probably won’t listen to this one again.

Double Nickels on the Dime was a contradiction. A double album that didn't feel long, even with most of their songs being under two minutes. I really liked Minutemen's brand of punk; a lot of their sound was that playful punk infused with new wave--and mysteriously, a bit of country was included? The album had a great flow when hardcore punk often jerks the listener around. And the lyrics were charming and silly, just like how I enjoy punk music.

I definitely blinked in a bit of shock to find 43 tracks on this album. Most of them are quite short, though, and like little punk rock jam sessions. That said, this is the variety of punk that is a bit more put together and less "proto", so it's much more up my alley, and I was surprised to find myself kind of enjoying the jam session approach here. As a sidenote, let me just say, it was trippy to hear a song with lyrics "disregards my pronouns" in a song from 1984, but that is such a topic in today's climate that my ears perked right up at that. Anyway, a fun listen of funky little jams.

I owned this one back in the day. Ended up giving it away. It’s OK, but definitely not a masterpiece, as some might argue. Too long, too simple, too similar.

It’s happened several times lately, like within this month, where I’d think about an artist or a particular artist (not even google them) and then the random album generator prompts me to listen to that group or album the next day. Get out of my head, album generator! In this case, I assumed Double Nickels was on the list, but I want 100% certain, and I thought to myself that I should really make some time to finally listen to it. Lo and behold, the generator said ‘now you must listen. Do not put it off. This is your homework!’ So, I was happy and shocked to see it come up. The timing was also perfect because what had deterred me from ever getting past the first few songs was the length of the album. Yesterday, I’d decided I was going to make gumbo, which meant I’d be whisking a roux for 45 minutes or more. Why not spend that time with the Minutemen? At one point, they even ask ‘what are you making?’ And even though I missed the context and they could’ve meant anything, I thought, wow, perfect gumbo making music. A good friend of mine loves punk and ska and has recommended this album for years. I could never get past the vocals or the feeling that it was too unpunk to be punk. I’m really used to the aggressive Black Flag and Clash style of punk, or even the poppy radio hit Green Day/Blink 182 era. The Minutemen are so different from either, they’re practically their own branch of the genre. I have to say, I did enjoy it once I got on board. However, not much stuck with me. I may need to revisit this to really let it sink in. For now, my assessment will be, on first impression, a more positively intentioned than bland, 3/5.

Quirky little album. The instrumentation I really quite like, but I do just wish the music, the songs would take themselves a bit more seriously. Lots of cool ideas, and most of them over in a flash. My ears perked up at track 40 "Dr Wu", and I thought finally a great track, only to realise that this is just a Steely Dan cover. 3.1/5

Long double album with some cool moments, but after just listening to the 3 and a 1/2 hour Ella Fitzgerald box set, I'm kind of anti-giving-super-long-albums-where-there's-not-a-lot-of-variety-a-chance. Moving on.

At times talking heads. At other times Zappa. At other times discord-records-style punk. Also lol on the song from jackass.

In a set of 43, there's gonna be bangers and there's gonna be flops

I like the simplicity of the guitar and drum combo. The singing is trash. Drums are pretty cool. Nothing super memorable here.

3.4/5 2x catch up on 6/9/25, pretty fun time and source of King of the Hill intro music

I didn’t expect to hear these guys on here. That’s based on how little I know of them. I know Corona and being heavily influenced by Jackass, I say, let’s do this. I can hear some Chili Peppers style in here. I think these guys were first? So I can also say that I’m guessing they influenced the chili peppers??? The bass is strong with these guys. It’s also funky and light punk. Not sell out pop punk. Don’t get it mixed up. This isn’t bad. It’s not predictable as to what’s next. There really isn’t any singing on here. It’s more talking but it works. I don’t think these guys are on a lot of peoples top bands lists but that’s ok. I long for a favorite band that is more obscure . I don’t think this would cause anyone to be disappointed in what they have heard with this album. Unless they are primarily a country, rap or classical music type of person. If that’s the case, they shouldn’t be here. Choice cut: Corona

Hard to review on one listen, it's long with lots of songs and yet the songs themselves are so short they sort of blend together, having said that the musicianship is fantastic, the guitar parts are unique and creative, the base and drums are excellent, blend of so many styles, punk, funk, jazz.

These guys seem fun, I want to be their friend. Also RIP to D. Boon. This isn't the kind of music I normally gravitate towards, and most of the songs are almost comically short and feel unfinished, but there's an interesting balance struck between how unserious they seem while also singing about (sometimes) serious things, with this different take on what "punk" sounds like. What it lacks in catchiness, it at least makes up for in uniqueness. I think I like "Side Mike" the best for its goofy factor, and because Corona is the best song on the album.

Not bad

I always struggle to fully enjoy this album. There's stuff on here I quite enjoy when I'm in the right mood. That said, it is way too long, and a bit hit and miss.

Fine for what it is and when it came out. 3.3

This would be a 3.75 for me. I like parts of this album, but it's excessively long.

On first listen, I wished this was a single album with fewer tracks and more developed songs. There are too many ideas at play here and it felt like one of those 40th anniversary reissues where the band throw on every segment of songs and outtakes from a studio session, rather than a cohesive whole. If I had more time with this, I might appreciate it more and be able to lock out individual songs. The ones that stood out were History Lesson Part 2, Storm in My House, Corona and Cohesion but many of the shorter, punk-funkier tracks just passed by in a blur. Made me think this would be the result if Gang of Four had been commissioned to write the incidental music for a proto version of Friends a decade early.

Not a bad album. Didn't really feel like most punk I've heard, but wasn't bad to listen to. Kind of long and some of the songs sounded the same. Could use a bit more variety. Some of the song titles made me chuckle though. 3.5/5

Catchy short burst songs. A solid 3.5 but not quite a 4.

mid to high 3, black midi if they were boring

Listened before?: No, never heard of them Very stripped down sound. About 1/3 of the way in and I've really liked the track "Do You Want New Wave or Do You Want the Truth" so far. Nice to hear explicitly anti-Nazi music right now.

It has 48(!) songs and is way longer than the other albums I've had until now (over an hour). Was not able to listen to the whole album, but was over halfway so I think I have a general grasp of the vibe. I liked some songs, and disliked others, leading to the halfway three stars.

Cool collection of short songs

I never heard of this band before, and I enjoyed this album. As far as punk goes, it's fun but somewhat long as a double album of short songs. I will listen to this again and maybe break it up to give each side a better listen. First impressions, I give it a 3 with the songs on side "Chaff" as some of the more memorable.

Interesting listen but I don't think I'll seek this out for another round.

Jackass

This sure was an album, not an interesting one, but an album. I enjoyed the more jazzy influences in the record

Very simple music. Not bad, but hard to enjoy because songs are over just when you start to get into them.

Good music but it's 43 2 minute songs essentially which will have very little lasting effect on me.

Massive, massive effort. It does mean that at times ir proves exhausting, but at least it has melodies, harmonies and an overall sense of music that separates it from other punk efforts that one might find in this list. Still, a condensed, shorter version would be better

Punk, Funk, even early Grunge. Poems. Punchy short songs. Their 3rd album. 45 tracks. Double album. Bass guitar heavy. Corona is a good track, as are #1 Hit Song, Two Beads At The End, Shit From An Old Notebook and A Political Song For Michael Jackson To Sing. Some songs sound like The Sex Pistols, some like Joy Division. Some even sound like early RHCP or Strokes songs. Better than I thought it was going to be.

I’m not mad about this one. It was fun and groovy and despite being way too long for me to typically enjoy, it stayed fresh throughout. May not listen cover to cover again but won’t be upset if it’s on.

They really remind me of Big Boys. There's a lot of funk punk on here. This was cool. I liked it but I think it was a little long and I'm not sure I would listen to it all the way through again. I am interested in listening again, but maybe listening to each of the members' sides separately.

This album definitely wasn't what I expected after reading that Wikipedia classified it as "hardcore punk, post-punk, post-hardcore". It has some punk but it is also funky on some songs and very singer-songwriter on others. It's quite an interesting album, especially considering it came out in 1984. It sounds like something that would fit in on alternative airwaves today. The bass on "It's Expected When I'm Gone" is so funky. I'm digging the groove on this one.

Actually kind of fun. Weird but I kind of liked it.

way longer than it needs to be but nothing outrageously bad or anything

Decent, nothing super super memorable but and enjoyable listen for sure.

Really short songs, punk vibe with a killer bass. Took a few songs to hit its stride, but love the groove it sat in for the majority of the album. Feels a little disjointed at times with sporadic live recordings of dubious quality and varying recording quality throughout.

A bunch of short, mostly fast songs. A lot of ideas and energy, like Costello's first couple albums, but not quite as structured. Still real tasty hooks and like Sublime, an the entire collection is greater than the parts.

I liked quite a few parts, the sound, the playing, the vocals, but it didn't add up to the expected sum of its parts. Just didn't do it for me today. A long album, but the individual tracks went by too quickly; more sloganeering than songwriting.

much love & respect to 80s punk but somehow this was boring. not bad, just something my highschool chemistry teacher would listen to.

Love political punk but this was a bit of a slog

All the songs were too short for me to get invested

I recognized Corona, that was a great track!! I realized it’s cause it got well known as the theme song for the Jackass TV show. In general the album is ok but nothing crazy to me

It’s got CORONA, no honestly a lot of shorter songs, all pretty good mid rock beats I could dig this album, it feels really long though. 2.7

This was a listen where the more you listen to the 43 tracks (that mostly range in a Minute long or just under 2) got better as it kept going. Not sure where I stand. It’s probably a 3.5/5 at the moment but could go to a 4

This album was kinda fun. Lost its way towards the end

Not unlikeable but too many songs

It's only just dawned on me why they're called Minutemen.... that's embarrassing on my part. Really good basslines, I love to learn some of them, but it's too long and too samey for me to give it a higher rating than this.

A bit disorienting as it truly feels like 4 albums with all of the genre changes. Shout-out to "Corona" known widely as the jackass theme song. I liked some of the raw lyrics in the song "shit from an old notebook" but felt like a lot of this didn't hang together

Good old school punk album, quite enjoyable if you like that kind of music.

I feel that I should like this album a lot more than I do. But it's too long and frankly, this period of American Punk just doesn't do it for me. Slint, Black Flag, Gang of Four, they all sound like something I should like, but I just don't that much.

Good, albeit a bit too long. Like a lot of punk albums the songs blend together at a certain point. However I felt the band did a decent job adding some variety throughout the album.

There was some good stuff here. The production is great, super crisp and clear. It lets you hear some surprisingly good instrumentation, bass and drums especially. The songs themselves are very short - there are 43 of them (apparently the vinyl has 45) - and don't really leave a lasting impact. After it was over, I just thought what was the point of all that?

Great experience. Musical punk, love it

Minutemen injected funk, jazz, spoken word, and political poetry... one of punk’s most inventive and unpredictable records.

Hadn’t heard of these guys before. Didn’t totally resonate with me, somewhere between a 2 and a 3

3.0 I listened to this a week before I wrote the review. All I remember is that I liked it and will check out more,

awfully long - funny enough i was thinking of this album name a few days ago, and then of course it showed up

Never heard of the group before...listening was a pleasant, interesting ride...

I enjoyed the creative twist to punk - at first. But the album ended up feeling too long and I had to stop listening.

Yeah this also scratches a certain part of my brain. The lack of real flow idk it just feels like some friends just jamming to the blues and recording it as they go. Wasn't my favorite but didn't hate it

Fast, quick, dirty, punk. I always wanted to get around to listening to the Minute Men properly and while I won’t be going back to this long ass album I have saved half a dozen songs and recognized 2. Mostly for how they’ve been sampled. As mentioned, the Jackass theme song. Who know it had words. Also idk if y’all deep dive Sublime but “Waiting for my Ruca” samples History Lesson Part 2 off this album. Punk rock changed our lives.

Oh hey, it's the Jackass theme song!

Hell yeah, brother! Have always found this record a fun one to revisit, its length and structure so antithetical to punk it goes full circle and becomes punk in itself. It’s one for dipping into though, as listened in one sitting it’s quite long, but it’s the ultimate road trip album and I can’t knowingly rate anything with Mike Watt playing bass less than a 3.

Jackass theme tune!

Double Nickels On The Dime by the Minutemen is a landmark album, not just in punk rock, but in music history. Here's a breakdown: Ambitious Scope: 44 songs in under 80 minutes! It's a whirlwind of punk rock, funk, jazz, and even country influences, defying easy categorization. Econo Rock Philosophy: The band embraced DIY ethics, evident in the album's lo-fi production and the sheer volume of material. They challenged the traditional rock album format, proving that artistic expression could be prolific and accessible. D. Boon's Genius: D. Boon's guitar work is incredibly inventive, blending intricate melodies with raw power. His songwriting, both musically and lyrically, is intelligent, witty, and often deeply moving. Mike Watt's Bass Prowess: Watt's bass playing is legendary. He's a driving force throughout the album, providing a funky, propulsive foundation for Boon's explorations. George Hurley's Rhythmic Versatility: Hurley's drumming is equally impressive, seamlessly shifting between punk rock fury and jazzy improvisation. Highlights: "This Ain't No Picnic" - A punk rock classic with a driving beat and unforgettable lyrics. "History Lesson (Part 2)" - A poignant and introspective track that reflects on the band's journey. "Viet Nam" - A blistering, high-energy punk anthem. "This Ain't The Summer of Love" - A more experimental track with a strong jazz influence. Overall: Double Nickels On The Dime is a challenging but rewarding listen. It's an album that demands repeated spins to fully appreciate its depth and complexity. It's a testament to the Minutemen's unique vision and their lasting impact on music.

Pretty great example of punk rock. Just a billion 1-minute songs. It was a fun listen. Didn't seem like 80 minutes.

Pretty good punk rock! Enjoyed it, but didn’t blow me away! Nice surprise to hear the Jackass theme tune in there though!

This is for the Jackass theme song

In a nutshell: great for what it is. The only complaint I have for DNOTD is that it's a double album. 43 songs is a lot, no matter the track length. I kept checking the playlist to see how much time is left. But that's just me. That criticism aside, these guys are skilled. You can tell by the recording they're having fun in the studio, and that rapport got me through to the end. Overall: 6/10

It was fine. Mostly reasonably decent but there was one song we didn't mesh with.

heard of them, but never heard them before - this album is too long, but ok American punk

lots of very og punk songs. a ton of < w2 minute ones. never an album I’d really put on but mad respect for the output

I didn't like much of this, but the feel of "Do You Want New Wave..." (without the vocal) is great. Actually, remove the vocal from this album, and you've got something much better. "Corona" could keep the vocals, though (and the White Stripes must have heard this one!). I did warm to this as it went on, so I'm upgrading to 3 stars.

The jazzy inflections give a rather curious and intriguing twist to the conventional parameters of dumb punk. Nevertheless, this album goes on for way too long!

This was okay. I found the jackass theme which was pretty cool though.

I thought this record was fine, but was assuming given my personal tastes, and what I knew of this record, that I'd like it a lot more.

#405. A strange assortment of fun little songs. Supposedly this is punk. I'm not so sure, but at least it's not The Clash, I guess. 3/5: pretty cool.

Pretty good, but is a little on the longer side.

Phenomenal. This is the type of punk that I really enjoy. It's like punk meets funk.

Enjoyed this. Punk with a lot of avant-garde, very raw but fabulous musicianship. Cool vibes surfer escque definitely see the Cali influence. Bit too long for a punk record in my view.

silly. didn’t expect the steely dan cover

Pretty decent

I've never heard of the Minutemen before. I like punk though. And this is punk, funk, jazz, country, avante-guarde, spoken word.. etc. It surprised me. I enjoyed it. The guitar and bass really grabbed me. Being a huge fan of The Red Hot Chili Peppers this took me back to their early days in some parts. The album did drag abit after a while though. I don't think making a double album out of it was necessary. I will be adding this to my collection though.

Pretty good experimental punk record. Apt band name based on track lengths

I don't really get this, but it's not bad. Not something I'll listen to again, though. I enjoyed some of the instrumentals.

Not sure what to think about this one. At times, I really liked it. Others, it was just noise.

Good fun. Kind or punk plus 90s rock.

Feels very messy, it has 43 songs but all pretty much under 2 minutes to make up 1hour 14, kind of chaotic in a good way but also just stupid in some places, the songs themselves are good sometimes but sometimes random with just grunts and stuff, guitar work is solid not really my thing overall but it is pretty good, 5/10

One confesses to not liking this quite as much as one feels one should, not least because one saw their final show (Dec '85, Charlotte, opening for REM in quite modest venue – old municipal gym, if memory serves). One loves the gritty riffing and hot, speed-dating aspect of the songs. The singing, often more like talking, leaves a bit to be desired. It's likeably gritty and clever and the politics are a-okay, but not all the jokes land anymore and 45 cuts is obviously too many. The covers are fun but the VH one is barely recognizable.

Too long, couldn’t listen to the whole double album as punk isn’t really my thing but I didn’t hate it altogether

Indie Rock, 1984 -> 3

Good album.

Didn't hate this. Punk/Funk and somewhat reminiscent of Primus.

All over the place but fun.

I've listened to this album once before, when I was on a long drive. My Main memories were that it was a bit tiresome to listen to, also halfway through HAHA JACKASS SONG This time, I did find it's still a bit exhausting, due to it's length and because it's a bit too discordant in places for too much of the run time, although there were some interesting parts.

If gogol bordello was punk

Really is something I shouldn’t like, and I don’t. However, I was more intrigued by this than most of these albums, so I’m going to a 7. (And yes I know by now that my ratings seem like they are off a whim, which they are)

I was surprsed by how dynamic this was, seeing as it is a 40-track album of a genre that I'm not fond of at all. Pretty interesting and engaging through its entire runtime. Key tracks: Corona

Unique in that it's 43 songs in 75 minutes and some of them I liked. But the style isn't really my jam. Enjoyed it for the uniqueness but probably won't be back to it.

There’s a belief I have with movies that I also have with albums. I don’t care how long or short it is, as long as it is enjoyable in relation to how long it is. A long boring movie is just as bad as a long boring album. That logic goes double for two types of albums: live albums and double albums. These albums tend to clock in at nearly 90 minutes in most cases (or god forbid more) and seem to never have enough material to justify listening to them. I will probably lose interest around halfway in and the rest of the album will be a slog. Now however, here’s a unique case. It’s a punk double album, meaning most of the album is filled with short songs. In addition, Minutemen bring a nice variety to the tracks, experimenting with multiple styles which should help to keep the album fresh through its nearly hour and a half runtime. I kind of like this concept, since it could make this double album actually listenable. And to be fair, most of it is. This was a refreshing change of pace for a punk album, trading the hard rock elements for more acoustic vibes while keeping the anti-establishment edge through its tracks. It seemed to work in retaining my interest… for some of the album. Look, there is good shit on this album, don’t get me wrong. This is perhaps one of the better double albums out there. But it still has that old familiar problem: I got bored halfway. The vibe went from “This is pretty good” to “Dear God, there’s still more”. That sucks because I appreciate this effort. It’s the closest a double album has gotten without losing my interest. I get why people would like this album. It’s just too long for me to consider great. Favorite track: Corona Other hits: History Part II, honestly most of the songs are too short to really single out.

Some interesting songs, but soooop long.

Interesting short punk tracks

Some good tracks, overall enjoyable but I did struggle a little with the length. 3.5

43 songs and I didn’t really care for any of them. The only enjoyment that came from this album was hearing the Jackass intro in “Corona” and finding the sample from Sublime’s “Waiting For My Ruca” in “History Lesson Part 2.” 2.5/5

Pretty fun, reminded me of the talking heads at times.

I've listened to songs of Minutemen before, but nothing memorable. But this double album is something unique. 43 songs in 1:15h! Short, fast, and loud are usually the trademarks of punk rock. But this is not just punk. There are so many different genres and influences. And because most of the tracks are under 2 minutes, they are quite direct and honest, just a short intro, maybe a verse or two, sometimes a bridge, and that's it. It's a bit breathtaking at times, but worth the listen.

Interesting listen.

No need for it to be a double album, although I'm not 100% sure what I might cut. Good, but too long and sloppy, and not as tight as a punk album should be (if it is to be great)

I've played this album a number of times over the last few years, and I reckon that as a body of work it's overlong and a bit rambling. I get many of the references in politics (but being non-US may miss some). I could hear similarities to other bands in there, notably the Gang of Four. On the whole I reckon this is only an average album.

Not something I'd go back to, but I like it

Stripped down garage punk with some nice, funky bass. Sounds a little like Violent Femmes. There are also moments when I can tell that this album must have influenced a great many other artists. I hear glimmers of Red Hot Chili Peppers, some newer indie bands and even Weird Al. The lyrics sound pretty dense and political, a surprise given the tossed off nature of some of the recordings. I wasn’t paying too close attention but sounds like there’s a lot to dig into lyrically. I like the countryish songs too. Reminds me of how Meat Puppets split the difference between punk and country. Wow, I wasn’t expecting the Steely Dan cover, “Dr. Wu.” This is a wild, weird and experimental album. I respect it and it kept surprising me but I can't imagine wanting to listen to it again any time soon. “Corona” and “The Glory of Man” were highlights. I liked the instrumental tracks scattered throughout too.

"Minutemen" really makes sense when 1hr14minutes of music gets played here across 43 songs! This is some pretty fun proto-punk (i think that's what it is called?), with some surprising moments. Going from the proggy fast and heavy "Viet Nam" into the slow rolling nylon guitar of "Cohesion" is jarring, but in a cool way, and I feel like the album has more little moments like that that I find intriguing. One downside is that it has some moments that feel a little boring compared to the rest. This is a problem that occurs on any album where there is fast and exciting moments, alongside slower ones. It leaves the slower moments to feel a bit less interesting. 3/5, was just OK for me.

Favorite Track: Hi I'm Johnny Knoxville and this is Corona

A generally enjoyable album. A wide range of quality on this. Many of the songs sound like musical doodles, or half baked ideas. Even the good ideas sometimes needed work. I did like the genre, and if half of the content was cut it would’ve been better 3.5

An album of 43 tracks that average 90 seconds each is always going to be weird, but I thought this was mostly fine

43 tracks is too many tracks however thin you slice ‘em, but, fair play, this album managed to keep me entertained for a surprisingly large chunk of the journey. There’s a lot to be said for keeping songs brief and moving onto the next idea before they get stale, and while there’s enough of an overriding sound (a punky, goofy, ‘slacker rock’ sorta vibe) to keep the album cohesive there are also plenty of experimental left-turns crammed in to keep it interesting. A classic case in point is the political jazz-racket of Viet Nam, followed immediately by the gorgeous acoustic instrumental Cohesion, followed by some absurdist bluesy noodling on It's Expected I'm Gone. 3 stars, or maybe even 3.5 because I admire their chutzpah.

heard according to the split sides and took breaks. while i loved side d, the rest were meh to be besides the standouts of course. this type of art punk isnt really my thing, so it seemed harder for me to get into it. the three sides overall really dragged my listening experience for this. 3 personal favs: theatre is the life of you, viet nam, shit from an old notebook, the glory of man, west germany

It’s long. But good. But long. I enjoyed a lot of it - but I found my attention waning at points. It feels important but it doesn’t seem to be planned to flow and it does not do it accidentally - at the same time it’s at points highly poignant and on point - it just makes me feel a more condensed record would have made it perfect.

It has interesting riffs and melody for what would be considered punk. But this genre is not my favorite and I cant give a 43 song album more than a 3 (even if most songs are sub 2 minutes)

Punk but it kinda just sounds amateur

Gear: DCA ÆON 2 Noire Artwork: 🚗🪞😁 Mix: 😎👌🔥 Musik: 🥩🧷🤪⏳🥱 Wertung: 🥩🥩🥩/5

Wanted to rate this higher, but there is a whole side that's filler. Al in fun, these guys never thought about their legacy I guess.

Here we go again, I thought. Another long ass album. However, there are FORTY-FIVE tracks here, the majority of which are under two minutes in duration. There was only one song I ended up skipping as it was just babbling and it was getting on my nerves. Otherwise, this album playfully bounces you from song to song, mostly never overstaying its welcome. I don't think I'd listen to it again but I enjoyed listening to it. More of a 3.5.

I saw it was punk and wasn't super stoked, but it's very funky which is right up my alley. Some songs are ska, which was enjoyable. The jackass theme song is from this album?! A lot of good moments, some bleh. I will say that because the songs are short the whole thing being long wasn't overwhelming like similar length albums. 3* Highlights: viet nam, corona, my heart and the real world

6/10 Didn’t mind this, but 40 songs over <80 minutes is a bit much Labelled as punk but felt more post-punk or post-rock to me Well done, so many tunes that of course there are some nice ones. Played with a lot of styles Not sure why this made the list - yes the Jackass theme is a banger but that can’t be it Best: not really that kind of album

It's so fucking long, any quality that this album possesses is drowned out by a quantity of crap, there's literally a side called chaff for Christ's sake!

Enjoyed it at first but half of it sounds like demo tracks

Anxious Mo-Fo #1 Hit Song Do You Want New Wave Or Do You Want The Truth? Shit From An Old Notebook Maybe Partying Will Help Toadies God Bows To Math The Roar Of The Masses Could Be Farts There Ain't Shit On TV Tonight This Ain't No Picnic Storm In My House The World According To Nouns

I didn't know what to expect going in because I'd never heard of Minutemen, but I was blown away by this album. I'm a big fan of Sublime, The Offspring, No Doubt, RHCP - 90s punk, ska bands in general - so I didn't expect to find this sound in a band from the early 80s. The influence on the bands I love is so clear in this album. It's a lot of songs (43) and it's a bit overwhelming at times, but overall a consistent, fun, upbeat, awesome punk album.

Not much to say about this one

Wow! Never heard of Minutemen but what an amazing band. Love the guitar, bass and drums. However, the album is insanely long. Not quite finished. 3

Loooots of funky punk, needs another listen

Forty three songs and an hour+ of play time seemed a bit daunting at first but it wasn't too bad when split into two listening sessions. This might have been better as two albums instead of one. As is, this probably would have benefitted from some trimming but where to start? No songs really stood out as better than the others. None were great and none were bad, they all just kind of happened in that minute and a half to two minute time spans. Overall I liked the energy and the vibe and thought it was an enjoyable listen.

Didn't know these guys did the jackass intro

I’ve heard this a few times before but I always forget that in the middle of a bunch of awesome punk jams is the Jackass theme song. It surprises me every time even though it really doesn’t feel out of place. A double album with 45 tracks, most are only 1-2 minutes but there’s still a good amount of variety and not just straightforward punk. There’s political protest songs, protest songs ABOUT protest songs, songs the band members wrote to each other, incomprehensible philosophical musings, and linguistic changes from slang to complex grammar a la James Joyce. Even at the short song length, they really packed a ton of good stuff into this relatively reasonable run time.

Now that's a lot of songs

45 canzoni.. ma siamo pazzi?!

Some really interesting moments (especially Cohesion). It's pretty enjoyable, but it didn't completely stand out to me. The songs are so short I thought it was going to be a 35min album - but 43 songs is A LOT. They definitely lost me halfway through. I'm pretty sick of it now towards the end. 3

Solid post-punk album. Nice and melodic punk without too much aggression.

Första låten är bra. Helt okej, lite funkig rock Sen blir det ganska samma hela skivan. Jag zoomar ut lite ganska ofta. En stark två. Godkänd men inte mer

Najs inledning. Spännande!! Eh, 45 låtar? Varje låt är typ 1 min 30 sek. Lite trotsigt. Det är ju svinbra element på skivan. Cohesion tex. Men bara instrumentellt.

Interesting - I like the concept: lots of short songs, each about a minute long (hence the name). All pretty good, slightly on the punk/indie side of rock. The mystery is why I don't like it more than I do.

Yeah pretty experimental and cool

king of the hil!!! :OOOO

I had to listen to this a few times for it to really grow on me. The first I was like, “Isn’t this fIREHOSE?” and thought it was a little thin musically. On the second listen, however, I was struck by the groove and just found it enjoyable overall.

An album I don't know but definitely sits in one of my happy places between punk and new wave/pop. The developing scene of music that drew from punk sensibilities but bought musicianship and songs. It's not full of catchy songs, it's a sound. I think it's something I might have listened to a lot at the time but probably has passed too long for me to give it the time.

Did not like the vocals. Guitar riffs were very technical at times. Otherwise would have rated it a 1 or 2. I’m not a fan of punk rock or metal. Find these a bit noisy and angry. Very annoying to me.

Great lyrics, but album needed more curating to pick the most interesting songs. It feels like it was just throwing everything in.

So many tracks but it's punk so at least they're short.

This was interesting. I’m sure many, including myself, were familiar with Corona and probably knew nothing more from Minutemen. This was probably the most accessible punk I’ve ever heard, full of ripper riffs and vibrant melodies without being overly harsh on the ears. I was surprised to hear Midnight Oil and Tragically Hip kinda vibes throughout. The vocals in Theatre Is The Life Of You struck me as quite Peter Garrett; It’s Expected I’m Gone gave me Gord Downie with his ensemble. It’s certainly not my go-to genre but I’d consider listening to more Minutemen. It’s the first time during this project that I’ve expressed such a sentiment for a punk band.

When i saw the amount of songs that Double Nickels On The Dime had, i wasn't going in with the highest expectations to say the least. But thankfully, to my surprise, this album was actually fairly decent. Unlike a certain OTHER long album i have done, This one cut a rather quick pace with every song being under 3 minutes. The songs were also fairly interesting in their own right too. This might not be my favorite structure for an album but I'd argue it could have been handled a lot worse. Best Song: West Germany Worst Song: Take 5, D.

With hints of Richard Hell and Television I would’ve liked this so much more if it wasn’t 45 songs long. It’s great that the songs are short but they do feel very samey. It’s definitely the kind of music I like and would listen to in chunks but the minutemen became hours-long men and I didn’t have the bandwidth to care any more.

This bounced between 2 and 3 stars for me. The tracks I enjoyed came on the Chaff side.

Album 365 of 1001 Minutemen - Double Nickels On The Dime Rating : 3.5/ 5 Some fun punk. I didn't expect much from this but it surprised me. Very bass centric. A lot of short, to the point, songs. A few tracks brought Captain Beefheart to mind. Just an overall decent album. I'd listen again.

43?????

I like punk but I can’t take 45 1:30 minute long songs in a row

I can see how the RHCP was influenced by these guys. A lot of the early RHCP seem to be directly related to songs from this album. I enjoyed the funk.

Solid punk record

Too long by about 35 tracks.

Cool, but long

I quite enjoyed this album they have a really interesting Punk blended sound. However, I would find it hard to pick out the best tracks because most of them ended far too quickly. It's a long album at over an hour and most tracks ending within 2mins, made it hard for me to really love it.

Never heard of these before and it was not what I was expecting! Really interesting. Punk, but not punk. Really short songs, but really quite eclectic in styles. This made it interesting as the start but I found by the middle it was what made it pretty tough going. Kinda all feels a bit artsy? Like some sort of art project. I dunno. Bit too out there for me I think. It's the jackass theme tune! Kinda glad I heard it but don't think I will be listening again

Albumet med överlägset flest låtar hittills. Och kortast genomsnittlig tid per låt. Lite märkligt bitvis, för det mesta bara. 3 / 5

I don't think I've ever experienced lo-fi punk before, but it was pretty cool here. I strangely hear the influence on, like, a lot of my favorites here. Dinosaur Jr in particular. Interesting listen even though I likely won't revisit very often. Favorite track: No Exchange

Too long, not very interesting to me

Red Hot Chili peppers kind of vibe in quite some songs

# 170 : Interesting feel on this, not what I expected at all, Good album except it goes too long, I guess it's good most of the "songs" are under 2 minutes! Feels just like a bunch of dudes playing whatever came into their heads one weekend in a mates garage. Favourite Track : The Glory Of Man

Post-Punk. Teils interessante instrumentale Anteile, teils Garage Rock. Verwirrend ohne richtig schlecht zu sein.

Art rocky but not as easy to jam too

Nice one, but too long. That should have been 2 albums.

A double-album from an obscure punk band with 43 tracks? It starts with what sounds like jazz funk and then goes into Spanish guitar and a sketchy live recording. Hmmm. It’s a bit of a curate’s egg this album - I really liked the punk tracks, but I felt they were trying a bit too hard to sound like Talking Heads on the funkier tracks.

Interesting album, full of ideas and nice pieces. The album is maybe too full of... everything, but that's also what gives it its peculiar sound and appeal, its collage quality, sometimes it almost sounds as if listening to a sampling album, before samples became a thing.

Solid offering in the early 1980's Southern California surf punk genre. Some interesting sounds. Probably a line from Dick Dale to these guys.

Sometimes less is more.

Definitely on the list of acquired tastes. Raspy signature vocals with pop/rock/new wave elements in the background. A little trite for the genre

Very unique Cool

Not bad, but very difficult to listen to. Usually, such a skilled band is not difficult to listen to for me, but the song length being taken to the extreme factors in a lot.

Is it punk? Rock? Jazz? Yes. Are the vocals annoying? Also yes. Good, but way too long.

Interesting band - a lot of short (<2min) titles.

There's a lot to like here, but there's a lot that could have been left out and wouldn't be missed.

3- Stars (7/15)

Luck of Lucien I Left My Wallet in El Segundo Public Enemy Can I Kick It? GO Ahead In the Rain Description of a Fool

definitely a cult band. I hear midwest emo influence in this

Good short songs Some weird ones but you can’t have all hits 3/4****

'Corona' from Jackass was fun

43 nummers!?!?!?!??!?! WTF????

I liked the Jackass song

43 damn songs, jeez. and they all sound exactly the same. its not bad, just somewhat directionless Significant 26(+1 from metallica album i listened to later)/76 Liked 13/77 Added 3/77 maybe i just didnt get it yet

Jack ass though

Beetje experimenteel, veel van hetzelfde

This is OK, it doesn’t need to be on the list but it’s not offensive either. They have a cool sound and corona definitely leads the album in that regard but I don’t know it got a little fart smelly in the middle.

Good, but too long.

Jackass theme!

3.5 stars

Kinda cool surprise, love the bass

Eclectic, tentacular post-punk

Tried about three times to get into this but it just couldn't keep my attention for a sustained time! Individual tracks were good but the whole 1h15m was just too much in one go. The jackass theme was unexpected! Highlights - #1 Hit Song, it's expected I'm gone, do you want new wave, political song for Michael Jackson, maybe partying will help, corona, Dr wu. Really appreciated when the politics emerged - if I was to be generous I'd look to revisit this again and really study the lyrics? But sonically it didn't capture me. 2.5* rounded up to 3

This was less hardcore than I was expecting. I like the quirkiness, jazz and funk influences, and, getting it just after the Mothers of Invention, I couldn’t help but notice the similarities with the short songs, weird, political lyrics and of course the guitar playing - but Boon is like Zappa on Steroids. Boon/s voice sounds a bit like Dave Thomas of Pere Ubu at times and the combination of funk and rock remind me a bit of what Red Hot chili Peppers sounded like in the early 80s.

What an unusual collection of music. Didn't love it, didn't hate it

Rating: 6/10

Drums just crazy! As if the kit wants to escape this but the other instruments catch the same weird disease instead of catching the drums escapism. This sentence lacks sense as this record‘s is overflowing with itchy restlessness, ideas, sketches, bits and Not-Killed-Darlings. 3.4

This album could be a 5 if it was just instrumentals--very jammy and fun with a solid bass line throughout--but the lyrics and vocals are actively bad.
