Listened once. I liked some of the funk elements and enjoyed the topics of the songs. Issue I have is that as soon as a song has a rhythm, it ends. Wish they had added at least a minute more to each track. 3 for now, possibly a 4 after a re-listen.

I liked the overall sound of the band. Loved the guitar; the singer often sounded like he'd had one too many beers and got up to sing karaoke. It was odd that all the songs ran into each other... hard to distinguish between one ending and another beginning. The lyrics leave a lot to be desired... "Twinkle twinkle, blah blah blah, E T C" I mean... 'You need the glory', wtf was that all about?? Overall, I liked it, but I wouldn't listen again.

Sounded a lot like Modest Mouse mixed with The Refreshments and Spin Doctors. Was ok, 3.5 stars

Its alright. There’s some stand out tracks. Corona and Vietnam especially but god its an hour long and theres 43 songs

Hybride rock-jazz, préfigure presque le ska, me fait parfois penser aux Talking Heads dans son phrasé

Not bad, but not my cup of tea. 3/5

I now know where the Jackass theme tune comes from

Some cool sketches and rad playing but all over the place

A lot of songs, a few instrumentals and it's not bad but is certainly not something I would enjoy. By all understanding, I should enjoy The Minutemen and Double Nickels on the Dime, but it's just "eh" for me. While I enjoy all of the songs being short, it also causes me to think these aren't fully fleshed out ideas, though obviously many others disagree.

This is way too long for a band called Minutemen

This is pretty good. I don't have much else to say about that. I had to look up if the song Toadies came out before the band The Toadies. It did. Huh.

It was interesting and enjoyable for the first 30 minutes, but way too long.

I'm pretty torn here. This wasn't a bad album, but I did tire of it by the end as it was long and 43 tracks started to feel a bit of a chore. Okay, the tracks are all very short, but even so it did begin to drag. Some bits stood out and I had a gut feeling that I might like this a lot more with repeated listens. I also experienced a bit of snobbery, as Hardcore is essentially American punk and that just feels wrong! The half-spoken vocals were probably the weak point for me. I liked the music, but there wasn't anything to ever grab hold of due to the rapid delivery of short songs. Ultimately, this album slipped away from me a bit.

HL: I don't even know (listening to Side Mike) I feel like whatever I didn't get out of the micro-songs in Wire's "Pink Flag" is somehow present here. Even though the stop/start jerkiness also exists, the songs combined feel like they're moving somewhere (at 55 mph :0) I want to go on a road trip now (after 40 more minutes of this album) Just pumping the brakes a bit here. I think this is an artistic accomplishment, and very fun at times, but the length did hamper my enjoyment a little. August 1, 2023

Liked it more than I thought I would based on the description of the group

This is a pretty good album. I don't get to complain about album length after giving a 5/5 to "69 Love Songs", but I'll say that I'd like more diversity in the songs. They all started to blend together halfway through and there weren't any curveballs that broke up the flow as with "69 Love Songs". I'm probably going to listen to this again, get completely hooked, and then regret this rating, but a 3/5 for a first listen.

Double Nickels on the Dime is the third album by American punk trio Minutemen. It's a double album containing punk music with elements of rock, funk, country, and jazz. This is Minutemen's best-selling album and it's also considered one of the best American rock albums from the 80's. It was critically popular at release, but being released by an independent record label meant it was hard to gain commercial interest - especially overseas. This album inspired other punk bands to ignore the set beliefs of punk being hardcore and freed them to make exactly the type of music they wanted to. This was a fun punk album chock-full of quick but great songs. I really liked this album so I'm on the lookout for more albums with music like this. Get your fill of Double Nickels on the Dime to be transported back to the mid-80's!

The best thing about this is the drumming! I’m not super into the voice, and it’s way too long and bloated with songs, in my opinion. Corona, aka the Jackass theme, is a classic, though.

Cool, but 45 songs? Too much chaff.

It was fine? Kinda long but at least each song was short so that helps?

Relaxte muziek, beetje Ska-achtig. Prima te luisteren op de achtergrond.

Wasn't really looking forward to this one after reading a bit about it. Turned out much better than predicted.

Some functional punk, was pleased to hear the Jackass theme on this.

It is somewhat enjoyable but too long and unmemorable for me. I dig the jackass song though! 6,5 out of 10

This sounded quite interesting at first, with some excellent guitar and drum work on display, and energetic vocal delivery. After a while, however, things started to get boring, one song after the other sounding more or less the same. When the album is quite long, at least some of the many tracks should hit home to keep me engaged. So, even though there are some good moments to enjoy, I am unlikely to seek this out for future listening.

not bad

Top 6 Songs: 1 - Corona (19) 2 - West Germany (26) 3 - The Roar of the Masses Could Be Farts (25) 4 - Do You Want New Wave (8) 5 - Toadies (15) 6 - Viet Nam (3)

There is a LOT going on in this album, lots of it good, some of it absolutely not.

43 tracks is too many for any album! Admittedly, they're all less than 3 minutes long, but it still adds up to 74 minutes. That said, I was pleasantly surprised listening to it (having kinda written it off because of the structure), there's a really nice variety of styles in there ranging from all-out punk through jazz and some spoken word type stuff. It's very political, angry without being too shouty and, whilst 74 minutes is definitely too long, it doesn't drag too much. Probably could have benefitted from cleaning up a bit and taking some of the filler out, and misses any real standout hits (possibly because most of the songs don't get a chance to get going), but well worth a listen. 3 still, but a higher 3 than Elvis.

A very fun listen albeit about a half hour too long. Would get a higher rating if it were a single album as opposed to a double

Местами напомнило «Зоопарк»… не знаю почему…

Most songs were good, sounding like RHCP or Primus or Violent Femmes. If they had picked a sound I think they would have been more popular. I hated that they were so short, you just start to get into a song and it's over.

Enjoyed the album, mainly for reasons outside of the music. Some of the political motifs I enjoyed, others I attributed to the group being white youth in the 80’s. Through it all though is an enjoyable album that harkens back to our times of teenage angst however they looked. I may not be able to relate to them so much as people, but the emotion conveyed in this album is something we all share and I believe experience. Won’t revisit the entire album most likely, but definitely walked away with new personal favorite tracks.

Minutemen are men of their word on time but quality of their talent shone through on each track.

Niet heel enthousiast, niet geheel onenthousiast. Heb ik meer te zeggen? Eigenlijk niet.

So much tracks I’m lost completely :/ sounds like a mix of all genres, didn’t work for me

Um, hadn’t heard of them, didn’t know what to expect. It was varied and I can imagine being quite exciting in their time. Did not dislike.

A bit of musical ADD with how many songs are crammed into the 74 minute run time. Interesting in how many style are captured and interpreted. Difficult to listen to at times

Brings all the fun early new wave/post-punk can bring: the bass, short songs instead of 10 minutes long boring solo's, energy and variation. But in its type not the best I find, so 3 stars

3.5 - extra .5 for jackals theme

I mean, there are albums that are worse than 80 minutes of punk. And the instrumentals are a bit interesting in some places so I guess it's fine. I'll probably never listen to this again.

Pretty fun. Probably wouldn't listen to it again.

Hot and riffy (but also super scrappy and excessively talky), this feels like punk made slightly more intelligible. One saw their final show (Charlotte, 12/13/85) so should probably round up but not sure all the jokes land today and one's simply not all the way there with this anymore. Not even sure one would rate it over fIREHOSE's best.

Fun album but got old after about 20 minutes.

Eh, it’s somewhat decent punk music but the album is way too long. 3/5

I was terrified at first at how long this album was, but the short tracks make it better. I loved the guitar and bass riffs in each track, but I didn't have a specific track that I was absolutely amazed by, and its probably because of the length. I admire the dedication to compiling this, though. Fave track(s): The Glory of Man, Untitled Song for Latin America

This wasn’t as expected. A pleasant surprise. I didn’t have time to play both albums this time but got the gist. Put me in mind of Big Flame & Beefheart, which is no bad thing. I have said this before but one to revisit when I have time to get through both ‘albums’ and give the lyrics a bit more attention.

Lots of short, somewhat hectic songs

Jazz punk poetry. I was a bit hesitant about the length going in, but there’s enough variety of good ideas here that it doesn’t feel too long.

This was pretty nice, but not very special

Not what I was expecting... I think I need to be in the right frame of mind to listen to this. Great variety of tracks and some crazy influences.

Fun, I remember reading about this in Michael Azzerad's book Our Band Could Be Your Life. Loved the story of them driving around trying to get the album cover shot. Also love that that their songs are short. RIP D Boon

I thought this album was a lot of fun to listen to. I like his a voice I like the sound it is very unique and innovative. I will definitely go back to this!

Better than I expected, still not something I'd seek out to listen to. Did enjoy the little sample that Sublime used. Overall, 5-6/10

A little long but enjoyed it. Bonus Jackass theme was a nice plus

I actually kinda enjoyed this one. A lot more palatable than Black Flag from the same genre.

5.9/10

Goodness this album was long. Enjoyable but most of the songs blended together.

This was a fine album but none of the tracks particularly stood out to me. Long album full of short songs. I wondered at first if minute length songs was some kind of bit

43 tracks?!? Wow ... Luckily, most of them are on the short side, mostly even under two minutes. Musically, the songs walk the line between rock and punk, with and most are distinct from each other. Really, the record is perfectly fine, but it somehow fails to engage me. Maybe it's just not my thing. 2.5/5

43 songs is too many songs. This is like cheating by adding a double album in here. But I liked it? It was just a lot.

Very weird punk rock album with strong jazz and a little funk influence. The bass is busy and dominant and the drumming is a also a focus. All the songs are extremely short but the album is very long, so there is a lot to uncover. Overall I wouldn’t say it’s great but definitely interesting.

Never hear of Minutemen before. They have a fun sound punk/new wave sound with jazz and funk influences. They sound very ahead of their time. I think given further listening they may be a 4, but right now they are a 3.

Maybe breit besser?

Enigszins obscuur punkalbum met afwisselend sterke en minder sterke nummers. De tracklist begint beter dan hij eindigt. leukste nummer: Corona "Corona" was de introsong van Jackass en is een persoonlijke blast from the past. "The World According to Nouns" en het instrumentele "Cohesion" zijn honorable mentions.

Börjar lugnt, rör sig mot stökigt. Överraskande bra men skulle plocka russinen ur kakan och spara de bästa låtarna, typ det instrumentella. Påminner bitvis om Jim Morrison med pratsång/dikter

i’d like to give them points for trying but it just bugs me how they can’t help but fuck with a song to make it “original”

Reminds me of Cake. Decent background music, but not sure I'll listen to this again.

Too long

Eh just not for me. I liked it but nothing really peaked my interest.

Overall: 6.5

Punk with plenty of actual music, experimental and otherwise, thrown in. Hints of 60's/70's psychadelia provide just that twist of garnish that every album needs. Never heard of this before today but it's definitely going on the list for the next time I go vinyl diving.

not too boring light punk

i recognize its good music but i don’t want to hear it often

Jackass

I really wasn’t sure about this the first time I listened but I listened again and started to get into it. I really liked Jesus Tequila. Probably not good enough for 4* but a solid 3*

Not bad but a bit samey after a while. I'm not sure anyone needs a triple album!

I dig it

Brand new to me. An enjoyable listen. Can clearly see its influence on the likes of Pavement & RHCP.

Pretty good, bit weird as well.

Raro! Un tipo de punk extraño.

A lot of things happened

The songs are mostly really great. Like, really really great. But they're just too short and I don't have time to really appreciate them. Also, 43 songs? Guys, you got to make choices in life, cut this shit in half. Still, great songs and great musicianship, but way too long of an album to truly enjoy it.

Nice concept, but I personnaly dont usually like short songs. Also too many tracks...

I really enjoyed the vibe. It's got a long of songs but I think they were all really good. I think the later half kind of got a little too "I get it" if that makes any sense, I think this could've benefited from cutting about half the album and making this a super cohesive and engaging 25-40 minute album, but it's not too big of an issue. 3.5/5

It's a pretty cool mixed bag, long though

ok. Not likely to bother finding anything else by them. Most interesting part of the album was finding the Jackass theme origin.

Vaikka biisit on lyhyitä niin kyllä olis 1/3 levyä saanut poistaa. Toki siis helkkarin kiinnostava coctaili jossa on yhdistelty vaikka mitä. Pitää kuunnella lisää koska tykkään kyllä. 3/5

Huh aikamoinen. Tästä sais varmaan neljän tähden levyn jotenkin, mutta ei kyllä kanna näin pitkänä niin hyvin. En mä silti kahteen pudota, sen verran monta hyvää hetkeä.

Whole thing sounds like a jam session - in a good way

Ok this wasnʻt bad! I was nervous going into it with the 1h14m playtime and the hardcore genre being pretty inaccessible to me in the past. But thereʻs quite a bit to like here. Itʻs extremely genre diverse. There are cool jazzy rhythms and strange spoken word lyrics. These guys are skilled instrumentalists. Nothing was too grating or off-putting. Nothing blew me away either, but I appreciated the experimentation and the way they completely shifted their sound between songs. Like Jacob was saying, I definitely need to sit with this one for a while longer, especially to digest the lyrics. Some great lyrical gems stood out, including: "I stand for language. I shout for truth. I stand for history. I am a cesspool." Some incredible titles here also: A Political Song for Michael Jackson to Sing, God Bows to Math, and The Big Foist. Also I canʻt wait to show my mom the song Toadies, cause thatʻs one of her favorite words. We learned it together when I was studying vocab for the GRE. 3.3/5

I feel enriched by listening to this, and there are some surprisingly touching moments. Pictures from a scene I was never a part of..: feels like a time capsule, and I’m at the show they’re playing these in. As an album, it’s hard to recommend because it’s so long, and there are a lot of records that could have been cut. But it shines bright where it does! I’ll be chewing on this one for a while, it’s not digestible in just a few bites.

Punk that passes the time just fine

Maneirin

Jackass song, and they sound like a band from today. Modest Mouse vocals for sure

all i want is time machine so i can go back and put a wallet on the top head of the snare drum sloop john b slaps

An unwieldy two-part volume of postpunk. Snotty but not unbearable.

Influential, I just don't love it. Seems like the kind of thing hipster dudes listen to in order to prove their taste in music.

Eclectic, a little eccentric, different styles here and there. Short songs so it's easy to listen to. Everyone should know the song "Corona". I may check this album out again. 45 songs though o.O

There were like 800 songs on this album! It was a fun punkstravaganza. Several quiet or thoughtful tracks alongside the more traditional fodder.

Interesting... never heard of this but it was alright

Listened to this one a few times before. It's no Replacements.

Nice! Good album

Listened to on 8/24/22 3.5/5 Favorite song: Corona, Cohesion, History Lesson Pt 2 This album didn’t need to be an hour - the vibes of the song fluctuated from chaos to calm. The drummer deserves a raise

Interessant, typisch zo'n band die eens in de zoveel tijd weer onder mijn aandacht komt.

Ik zag hier een beetje tegenop, maar vond het uiteindelijk nog best intrigerend.

I really like a lot of this but it just tails off a lost towards the end, that last side just doesn't hold up to the rest of the album which is a damn shame

I enjoyed this album well enough. Lyrically, it felt ahead of its time..."Machines disregard my pronouns" as a lyric in 1984 is astonishingly relevant in 2022. At 75 minutes I could do with a little bit less of it, by the end it was starting to border on boring/tedious. If the album had started around track 22 or so, I think I'd have rated it a little higher.

I feel like I should like this more. But for some reason the DIY aesthetic (embodied by the vocals which I didn't really like that much) felt more naive then cool.

me gustó, pero creo que a este álbum le sobran unas buenas cuantas canciones. en su conjunto me pareció bastante divertido de oir, pero al mismo tiempo no considero que haya ninguna canción que sobresalte particularmente, ni para bien ni para mal

Jackass!!

A veritable smorgasbord of short songs, heavily featuring 80s geetar and bass, some interesting elements but as soon as I start to maybe get into something it moves on.

Interesting album. Labeled as punk on Wikipedia, and I can see why, but it's a really eclectic mix of music. A long album too for punk. Some songs I liked quite a bit, but also seemed like quite a few throwaway songs. Could have been an outstanding single album with some editing. 3 stars.

catchy

I feel like I should like this album more than I do. I love most of the classic SST bands but this has always just gotten a mixed reaction from me. I still feel perplexed, it's got some good moments but I'm always underwhelmed in the end. The long run time does not help. I dunno. A 3 I guess. I haven't figured this album out in give or take 20 years and it might take another 20 or more

5th July 2022 Listened while working from home. Stripped wall paper and cleaned the bathroom in the evening. Interesting, initially liked the short song structure but was a lengthy album. Didn’t realise the Jackass theme was an actual song though!

Sångaren drar ner betyget

there were a ton of songs on this album. some were great, but some were bad and a lot were forgettable.

Pretty fun set of post-punk/early alt music. You can hear a lot of influences to later alt rock, but the album goes on a little long

3.5 Stars. The bass really stands out on this album, but other than that doesn't do much for me. Despite the extremely short track lengths, the massive album runtime is too much.

Enjoyed this album since it had that early 80’s kinda vibe

Impressionou pela sequência e duração.

Okay. Not sure I'm a fan but plenty to like here.

I assume this is what happens when theatre kids get into black flag. 3/5 cause unexpected jackass theme tune.

Wayyyy too long and not interesting enough to sustain

Ha I legitimately have no idea what to think about this one. I am not a fan of punk... but I don't think it's at all right to call this a punk album. "Cohesion" isn't punk - it could be an acoustic Black Sabbath song. Some of the chord progressions and musicianship clearly show these guys knew what they were doing. Dammit tho again with the vocals. I hate it. but...then sometimes i don't. ...ok let's face it, it's just so/too damn long. come on. After about 15 songs I'm like...ok I'm done. Glad I heard it, there are definitely a lot of bands I like that *clearly* listened to the Minutemen, and they definitely took cues from Gang of Four and Wire which I also like. In the end...I like it and more than I'd thought I would but not sure how often I'd voluntarily listen. 6/10 3 stars

Algunas canciones parecen maquetas sin terminar. Felizmente no son tan largas, así que mientras le encuentras sentido a la canción ya termino.

'This Band Could Be Your Life' brought to Minutemen. Book is ok but a bit overrated, just a compendium of fairly standard band write-ups that could be in any music mag back in the day (albeit with a smaller word count) Band is ok but a bit overrated. 43 songs just isn't a good idea, even if most of them are less than 2 minutes. Some you end up wishing were longer, some you wish they'd kept back

overall a positive listening experience, but the rough vocals got a little grating after an hour and a half. reminded me a lot of parquet courts, i liked the lyrics and the drumming. 6/10

first listen crazy raw energy

In the interest of full disclosure, I stopped listening after the 42nd song.

Wasn't aware the Jackass theme tune was by these guys. Some good stuff but ultimately this album is far too long and 43 songs long...fuck off. A good portion of them are shite. Generous 3.

VERY 80's that's neither a good or bad thing really. But can't put this higher than an "interesting" listen.

"Let's say, I got a number That number's fifty, thousand That's ten percent of five hundred thousand" (Viet Nam) "Twinkle, twinkle Blah, blah, blah E.T.C" (#1 Hit Song) Fascinada con la cantidad de canciones de este disco que podría haber escrito tranquilamente Rachel Bloom.

I've just listened to this album and I'm not even sure what just happened. The energy is intense, with few tracks making it over 90 seconds, let alone two minutes. Because if 90 seconds is all it takes, why go longer? The beguiling bass of Mike Watt elevates the album into true iconic status. The whole album feels like the cool weird kids have invited you to a party and you're having the best time. And then, because it is 2022, there's also the post-post-modern Easter egg off the Jackass theme song popping up halfway through.

There's a lot of good in here, but the relentlessness of idea after idea in song after song grates after a while. Should have probably been two albums with half the songs on each. The tunes are good though, with some real variety in the first half.

Mmm. I see the charm. But not really for me

3 Very short songs. I'm not a fan of the ugly scream singing, but the groovy bass and RHCP like drums and guitar is great. A low 3. Pretty cool album though

This was a very confusing album. First of all, 43 songs?? Even though they were short, it still felt really long. Also, what genre was this even? It felt like each song was from a completely different album. That being said, it was a fun surprise to hear the Jackass theme song come on, had no clue that was on this album, and I also saved one of the songs in my spotify so that's a win ('Dr. Wu').

classic punk listen to corona

I have no idea what to even think about this album. It's all over the place, some fabulous, some complete garbage. I feel like their influence must be wide though, as there are many current bands that have a similar, if more refined, sound.

37. Double Nickels on the Dime - Minutemen 43 tracks. This is ok but didn't blow me away. If you don't like a particular track don't panic, there will be another one along in a minute, (or 1min 42 secs on avg to be precise). 3/5.

Ayo holy shit, the jackass theme song is on this album. I'll be honest that took my surprise for sure. It's a long ass album but I enjoyed my time with it.

Had to read up about this album after loading it up to listen to. 43 songs that vary wildly in tone and style veering from Punk to country to instrumental. That's still to this day only available physically in vinyl. I'm confused and impressed in equal measure, as a feat of artistic anti-commercialism it gets 5* but its mish mash of styles makes it a bit of a tiring listen. so 2 stars off for that

Ja oke maar niet iets dat ik nog niet gehoord had

cool song names, not as cool album length and actual songs themselves

Noodly Busy Bit too dancy and upbeat Talking Heads but rougher more disjointed Like the singing style Can see how influential this is - it's influenced everyone Theme to Jackass! Track 8 v.good Drums sound like breaks Too many guitar solos Like that the songs are short So many ideas A lot of stuff I've consumed since the 90s has this as a part of it Overlong

wasn't really a hardcore album as it had been labeled, wasn't too enjoyable of a listen

45 songs? Was this necessary? Nope. Each song was pretty short so that helped. Some were good. Others kind of meh.

Double Nickels on the Dime certainly is an interesting record, filled with 43 songs that are each slightly longer than a minute. On most tracks, the instrumentals sound tight, though messy at times, and I enjoy the sarcastic comedic song titles and lyrics. I do have the admit this experiment did not work perfectly for me, as most songs are over before you realized you should have listened to a seperate cohesive message. 3/5.

Each song is a condensate of polemical rage and "wit", firmly structured on dissonant jazz funk, and a haggard and more analytical rambling in the punk idiom. (6/10) Favourite Songs: Glory Of Man, Corona

This is great, much more varied than I expected from what I had heard of Minutemen. It holds together well over the double album.

Literate hard core from a band that hit its marks like a soul act. Not many bands could pull off this level of precision in a single take. Who in the world went to their shows? Rating capped at 3 because I only listened to the first two sides.

I dug and was surprised by cohesion, an acoustic fingerpicking number pretty out of place in the album, which features tons of short songs.

Really admire the punk aesthetic, despite what you think of the music, the idea of generating this amount of creativity in a short period is inspiring. Obviously some tracks are better than others, but you can't really say its too long or that any not necessary.

Kinda cool, although I think that so many songs almost always diminish an album.

alright - definitely lived up to their name

I listened to half of this album. Couldn't find the time but it seemed neat. Would like to revisit sometime

It's difficult rating stuff you don't like. It could be the best of its genre but i was a bit bored. And when the tracks are less than 2 mins long, that's not good.

-"Viet Nam" and "It's Expected When I'm Gone" were groovin' -I like the big bass sound on a lot of the songs, like "#1 Hit Song" and "Shit from an Old Notebook" -Its a long album, but every song is like 1:50, so at least it switches up quickly -A lot isn't my style, but it's got a couple of cool track, really riding the line between a 3 and a 4 -"Corona" is not only relevant today, but it's also the Jackass theme which is cool

I liked the instruments but not the vocals, just personal preference

Was expecting a punk albu, in reality this is anything but. Hard to score and album as huge as this after just one listen but overall an enjoyable listen that that I intend to come back to at some point. In particular the musicianship is fantastic, the bass is excellent and really stands out but ably complimented by great guitar work and drumming

Enjoyed this album more than I expected. Reminded me a tiny little bit of Talking Heads. One drawback, is that there are too many songs on it.

Not bad but goes on and on

not really sure what to think on this one. It was okay but I had a real bad day yesterday so it was hard to concentrate and get into it. I hope today is better. I give this album eleven licks on the kitty cat scale

43 songs on one album? Nothing particularly noteworthy but it was fine overall? An interesting concept and decent execution none the less. Props for at least trying something weird and doing okay with it

Jackass lol

3.3 - from a music history perspective I’m sure there are intellectual reasons to appreciate this album. I hear antecedents or math rock and a Midwestern sound. And there are lots of ideas in these 43 tracks. It’s just not for me.

respect to hardwork

No tengo canciones favoritas jajaja. 7/10

This type of music is kind of on the borderline of my musical tastes so it wasn't really my favorite.

This is a fun album with short, noodly little songs. The album as a whole is too long by about 35 minutes, so that loses a star for me. Jackass theme song was quite a surprise!

Bon mais tres long.

Mon hit: Facile, Corona. La chanson thème de Jackass! Beaucoup de souvenirs.

I knew of singer/bassist Mike Watt from one of his solo albums, but didn't realize this was his band. LOVE the heavy bass and funky punk bits. Music that I would love to see this live more than listen to the recordings. If you cut this album in half, you'd have a 4 or 5 star album. But with all the chaff, it's a 3.

These guys are way easier to appreciate than they are to enjoy. I generally enjoy the late 70's early 80's punk, and the minutemen showed an amazing diversity and experimental side across 40+ tracks. However, I'm not enough of a fan of D. Boon's voice and delivery which is too frequently passionless for punk. I'd much rather listen to Husker Du or Black Flag.

kinda punkish and they made the jackass song

Reminds me of Talking Heads

Solid album!

I like their sound, but far too many two minute songs on one record!!

An ok album with a lot of ideas that just keeps goin and goin, oh hey jackass, anyways not bad

its fine, i thought it was ok to listen to. some interesting sounds. didn't love the lead singer's voice. i understand punk albums can be longer bc the songs are so short but 40 tracks still coming up at an hour? and nothing on here was particularly memorable or groundbreaking to me that it should've been included on this list. still though, it was cool to listen to.

An album that proves even short songs can overstay their welcome. I enjoyed a lot of the songs here but the concept of a double album of this music is just too much.

Can see the initial appeal but became too samey after the first 10 or so tracks

Like: funky bass, pretty cohesion song, edgy songs with good riffs. Pretty catchy tunes. Shoutout Jackass theme song. Disliked: somewhat repetitive but kind of messy like some song sounded live or completely different in a choppy way and I didn’t find it necessarily artistic but maybe that’s the edgy vibe they are going for. Probably won’t relisten but glad I did. 4/10

Reminds of the hold steady which is a very bad band he likes. That’s really all I got on this one

First take I was like this is certified booty cheeks. But then I had the blessing of enough time in my day to listen again twice more. It got better. Guitar riffs carried songs by themselves. I like what the band represents in diy punk music all that. But I can’t say it’s good just cuz it’s different.

"I'm fucking overwhelmed," sings D Boon on The Big Foist. That's fair. Not only is it a long album of very short songs and not only is it a double album of solo sides (which has been unwelcoming since Ummagumma), but it is punk rock, so nothing feels too honed - the instrumental break that ends D's Car Jam feels like two different songs playing at once. Same on Anxious Mo-Fo. Same. Same. Same. But it's okay if everything starts to fall apart, because you can just stop the song suddenly. However, this puts a lot of pressure on the listener to make this into an album rather than a bootleg of various demos on one CD like the ones we used to buy at Hector's House. Thankfully, I find Boon charming. When he says "Our band could be your life," it is an obvious overstatement, but you believe he could mean "our band could be your band too - we're not fussy." I like how he pronounces Pedro. I like that he recognises he and his bandmates as corndogs. I like the treble-up guitar tone. I like the Badnose song about Boon's tragic death. While the ramshackle urgency of everything here is a disadvantage, it is also, obviously, its greatest strength - the price of jamming econo. 2 No point in accusing this lot of any snark; what they are doing - condensing jams into miniatures - is nearly as much trouble as writing ‘proper’ songs. The appeal of the exercise is certainly lost on me, however. Any potential for building meaning - political as well as musical - is hobbled by their fealty to brevity. Polonius was a fool - Brevity is not, as we know, the soul of wit; accordingly nothing here is funny. That’s ok. More important in explaining why Minutemen waste their time and, more cruelly, that of their listeners is the fact that Brevity is not the soul of anything. 1/5

I don't know

Not particularly enjoyed this punk rock album. Its also quite long with too many songs 43 ! 2.5

A bit of a slog with too many songs. Interesting ideas at times but nothing that I want to relisten to necessarily.

I used to love this album. The sings are so short.

I think I’d heard of the Minutemen before, but I can’t remember any of their songs. That doesn’t really mean anything, though, because the songs on *Double Nickels On The Dime* are practically unrecognizable. Wikipedia classifies this album as hardcore punk, and if that’s supposed to mean it’s mostly disjointed strumming, then that’s accurate. Yet the album is actually well-produced, and the exceptionally clear sound really precludes any punk associations. The musicians also know their craft, and the singer is really good—no, this isn’t a punk band, but professionals who simply want to sound weird. They achieve this by playing every part completely at random, making it seem almost improvised. If you were to bring together ambitious country musicians and simply dictate the tempo and key to them, the result might sound quite similar. Interesting, but I don’t really need it.

I know, let’s write 43 very DYI, mostly underwhelming songs and put them all out there as an album. Just not my cup of tea.

It was alright

Okay listen, but far to less variety for so many minutes.

I just thought it was uninteresting and samey.

This was not my vibe, but I appreciate my music palate being extended!

"This punk album is too long" is not something I expected to ever say.

Personally, I think that album was much longer than it was worth, and not part really stood out much other than those jackass notes. 2/5

no me gusta

Saw this influenced groups like RHCP It did catch my ear initially but it’s a 2.6

yet another American punk rock album, I've had too many of these recently. 45 tracks in 81 minutes. I'm having a listen but it's all a bit mundane so far.

Not really my thing ig

This album has the simultaneous issue of being too long whilst also being too short.

I love punk music but this was so, so not for me. Spoken word ranting over garage band level music.

My attention span didn’t last as long as this album. The beginning was decent; I liked the music, the drums and guitar were engaging. The vocals weren’t great but they were fine. I was cleaning the house while listening and somewhere around me scrubbing the toilet I realized I hadn’t been paying attention anymore and I didn’t care enough to go back and relisten.

I was actually digging the groovy guitar licks and quick-tempo’d drums playing off each other at the onset of this album. The punk vocals and spoken word didn’t really agree with me much but I was tolerating them for the first 7 or so songs. …The problem is there were 36 more f**kin songs!!! Halfway through this album all I could think about was the sketch comedy skit from In Living Color where Damon Wayans bum character would sing 7 seconds songs about any topic he could think of. This album was giving off the same vibes. It would have been better received by me if there were 30 less songs and the lyrics were more powerfully arranged.

Jackass

Starts to grind at song 30

Solid evidence that "influential" and "important" doesn't have to mean "worth listening to." These dudes managed to start 43 songs but finish none.

The Minutemen certainly deserve their name: 43 songs here over a 74-minute running time. Now there are some as says that 43 songs is too many for an album that isn't spread over 2-3 CDs. I...would be one of them. Even though the average length is about 1'45, and they proceed apace and cram a lot into each song, it all feels too much. I'm off for a lie down.

Didn’t make it the full way through but from what I heard it wasn’t going anywhere.

74 minutes is entirely too long for that.

Oddly cohesive for having forty fecking songs

40+songs of two minute punk? Ok, let's go then. Each song is gone before you know it. This is definitely an album designed to be taken as an album on the whole. It's expected I'm gone. #1 hit song is quite funny, the guitar drips sarcasm. And yet other parts of this album are the dull pop songs parried by earlier songs Overall I think this album fails to meet it's own lofty expectations.

Wow more shouty angry men yelling at clouds for ten tracks. Yawn

Not my favorite. The singer's voice is pretty average and despite the meaningful lyrics I just didn't enjoy it much. So of the songs can be pretty cool, Brenden enjoyed more than me.

I would call this more garage rock, then punk rock but boy was there a lot of songs on this album overall not horrible

Gasped audibly when Corona started since that's the goddamn Jackass intro music and those few strums sent me back decades, mentally. But besides that, meh.

Corona is a standout song, Jackass did great using it. Rest of the album isn't very memorable.

I hate the vocals but appreciate the sentiments and the creativity and the bass. It's just so long and scattered. I'm fucking overwhelmed. I'm 25 tracks in and I give up.

No importa que algunas de estas 50 canciones esten bien, si me das no se cuantas canciones de minuto y medio que suenan todas iguales me perdes por completo lo siento

Liked this more than I was expecting to. Had some solid tunes. Don’t know if I would give this a repeat listen, but for a genre I don’t really care for, it had some enjoyable moments.

Idk, it all sounds the same to me and if point was to have many different songs it kinda fails

Sounds rough and raw, but there are a couple decent songs

I found this very interesting, like a sketchpad of ideas for proper songs.

It was ok in its eclectic way. There was nothing that made me jump up and down with excitement. So I am pleased this album passed me by.

Meh. I really enjoyed the drum tone, and it was super playful, but it kind of felt nothing burger

A few songs we’re just ok, could listen again, but probably won’t.

Sounds like if David Byrne made bad music.

It's long, it's confusing with its 43 songs and musically not super interesting to me.

Massively mixed feelings about this one, it was just so hit-and-miss, and it went on for WAY too long. There's absolutely no way this album needed to be as long as it is. The guitar and drums are generally quite interesting and fun. There's lots going on, it's varied, there's some really great riffs and it's overall just quite enjoyable to listen to. That being said, some tracks are just bad. I can't easily pick out specifics because I totally lost track at some point. I think maybe "You Need The Glory" was one that I was just waiting to end. The vocals don't do it for me. They feel weak compared to the pretty decent instrumentals, and they just ruin a lot of tracks. It's like you have this pretty decent band having a nice jam and playing some really funky rock, and then one of the band member's little brother comes in and starts shouting nonsense over the top of it because their parents said they had to include him. Would have been a 3 based on the instrumentals, but with the vocals and the overall length of the album just turning it into a bit of an ordeal to get through, I'm going to have to drop it to a 2. They're a band I'd be happy to listen to the occasional track from, but I'd never listen to this album again.

I feel like I start to get into the groove of a song and then it ends... It's a shame because I'm generally enjoying each song but then I have to move on early :( I gave this album a break every 10 or so songs and I found myself rejuvenated and ready to listen to and take in the next set of songs. But even with this method the last 10 songs felt like a slog... I found myself unable to tell when a new song had started or if they were just jamming out to finish a song. The song length and amount of songs make this album so much worse. You have to be doing something ridiculously impressive to justify an album this long imo and this just isn't that. High 2.

Somewhat strange

Didn’t know what to make of this. Disliked the format, enjoyed some of the content but fragments. Not keen to hear it again.

Låter rätt funky och med en hel del intressanta influenser, men såhär otroligt många och korta låtar gav mig ett ofokuserat helhetsintryck som jag hade svårt att riktigt ta till mig.

Mycket.

80s punk rock. Doesn’t feel cohesive, can’t get into anny songs. Way too long.

Musically an interesting mix of punk rock, funk and jazz, that's nice. Lyrics are good, but the vocal delivery is very tiring to me. Also this sounds like a bunch of very short demo snippets rather than finished songs.

Equal parts interesting/quirky and annoying/garbage. A bit of a mixed bag compared to a lot of the punk so far but it's getting a 2.5, the .5 because of the Jackass song.

A little too punk for me.

A fair amount of this was straight-up goofy, a precursor to some of Blink’s humor. I was pretty down on this album until Take 5, D. That “side” of the album was right up my alley. A neat punk-ish album. Probably best enjoyed when played live in a gross basement bar.

There's parts of this that is extremely my shit but dear god why are their 43 tracks. there's a solid 11 album in there but maybe this nonsense worked better in the 80s.

Funk/post hardcore? 40 tracks? Just comes across as a jumbled mess of ideas but I'm guessing it's the punk hipsters choice.

That was exactly what I remember the Punk Rick era to be. Outside of a few really talented groups most of it was sub par musicians playing songs that were nasty, brutish, and short. I didn’t skip any of them, so it wasn’t that bad.

I am a fan of this style of music, but in very small doses. This is too much in one setting for me. 2.75

Too raw. Terrible production.

Not my genre, sounds ok but I think I prefer lyrical works rather than isntrumental

Interesting stuff

guitar is ok

Would describe it as punk-ish, I don’t love it. Also, it has so many songs, holy moly. Stand-outs - History Lesson Part 2 - Dr. Wu

Three songs in and this sounds incredibly lame. Like the worst of generic 80s punk. Oh wait, track four, "Cohesion", an instrumental, played on what sounds like a 12 string, finally indicates they have more sounds in their quiver than straight ahead punk. Sigh, spoke too early, back to uninspiring straight ahead punk on track 5. I was beginning to think that "Cohesion" was a mirage in an endless desert of power chords, when finally track 8 "Do You Want New Wave or Do You Want the Truth?". Beautiful arrangement, but more lame lyrics. Also, it is very clear by this point that Dennes Dale Boones' voice truly unappealing. I can imagine that they were probably a fun show to attend live, but the album is truly underwhelming. It was truly punk to make an album with 43 songs, but as a middle aged person some 40 years on, I don't have the patience for this nonsense. Don't think I will be listening to this again in the future. Don't really believe it has a place being on this list. I feel like the singer's tragic death, at such a young age unfairly biased the critics view of this album.

The kind of album people pretend to like

Self aware enough to make the songs short, not self aware enough to keep the album under an hour. I do enjoy the funky bass tho

plays like a long ass demo

Cool but weird

I have no idea what kind of album I just listened too. It was all over the place.

Meh, it just didn't seem that special to me. I was into punk back in the 90s, and this probably would not have caught my attention even then. The beginning of Corona definitely brings back Jackass memories, but still not enough to get me excited about this album.

43 songs and not a one of 'em is good. impressive work, boys.

Did not know this was the album that Corona came from. Pretty generic 80's punk album otherwise. Good summer punk vibes. 4/10

It's alright. Don't think I'd listen again

It's got a lot of fun ideas like guided by voices but super short. I felt alien lanes had greater diversity and more polish

a lot of the songs sound very similar. not my favorite album.

Min tuppkam växte tillbaka lite :) Gillade musiken, men på tok för långt album, blir trött i huvudet av att sträcklyssna. Svårt för "spoken word"-musik tyvärr, det tar ner betyget till en tvåa

Random live track? Don't like the structure with 44 tracks and a bunch of them really short. By track 35 I'm exhausted and ready for it to be over. Way too long, could use some curation here. Some fun jams on here that I like but probably a by track revisit and not an album listen through.

A long double album with a mixture of punk rock, jazz and alternative. This kind of punk music is good and clever. Some songs are fresh sounding, and I appreciate the musicianship. But there are 45 songs on it and many of them aren't that great, which make the album disjointed and not compact, it just flows from one song to another. A short compact album with 10-15 songs would have been perfect. Strong 2 stars.

Must be pretty busy in the heads that created this.

This is cacophony. Calling this the best rock album of the 80s is like calling hitler a good guy. Genuinely what?? The tracks are all 1-2 minutes long, none really have a theme of some sort, it's just bad.

Alkuun piti otteessaan funkkiviboineen, mutta lopulta mitta otti meikästä yliotteen ja levyn kuuntelu kääntyi väsytystaistoksi. Hävisin.

Please god no more punk music

Well I listened to it…

That was something

It has long been my contention that almost all halfway decent double albums would have actually made much stronger (maybe even outstanding) single albums. In this case, maybe if it had been trimmed down to a single EP it could have been okay. When an album's most memorable tracks are on a side named "Chaff," you just aren't trying hard enough to edit and balance out the worst impulses of the group's three members.

Did Minutemen just invent a new genre to mask a lack of talent?

Didn't enjoy it.

At first i thought i've already listened to this album here. It seems I did it on some other list not a long time ago. I didn't like it and not going to go through this again. It's not bad it's just whatever

Sei lá, não acho que entendi a proposta

Didn’t know the dudes that hung out behind 7-eleven at midnight every weekend drinking 40’s decided to start a band.

Aside from the obvious hit in Corona, it's alright.

Ikke så bra

Unlistenable. I was born in the right generation.

This was kind of like torture for me. 43 songs?! Over an hour of this? This is a sick joke. But I listen and the streak of listening to every album all the way through is intact.

Today I found out where the jackass theme tune came from

2.5 It’s a bummer because I love the instrumentals here. This feels like something I should dig. But I just can’t get on board with the vocals, and there’s just no variety in the style of song here, and it’s really almost 90 minutes long.

Surprisingly groovy. Vietnam slam poetry vibes. Reflects on self and society. Overall, not my thing. Tracks I liked: Cohesion Maybe Partying Will Help Favorite lyrics: "What of the people that don't got what I ain't got? Are they victims of my leisure?

DNF, it had like 50 songs

Weird as shit pop/rock/punk mash up with extra weirdness plastered all over it, not to mention how much too long the album is. Plays like a NoMeanNo record without a direction. The sound of the band is kind of thin, I understand the idea that each instrument sounds like itself, but that also makes for a boring sound, distinctive in the punk landscape yes, but boring. I've never really enjoyed the US punk movement that much, I'm liking UK and especially the Finnish variations a lot more.
