Reviews (page 6 of 13)

Not as seminal as Doolittle but still an excellent listen.

I didn't immediately enjoy this as much as Doolittle but that's not really possible. Definitely going to revisit

Pretty good. I quite enjoyed it.

Rather cool

Cecilia Ann: - I really liked the opening guitar, very in-your-face start for an album - Glad it is short, Rock Music: - Didn't really stand out besides screaming Velouria: - Gives me David Bowie (Maybe? Not sure if that's the right comparison) vibes. - Later in the song really reminds me of an 80s rock band vibe Allison: - Opening guitar and drums remind me of something that might be in Burnout: Revenge - I didn't care for the opening vocals at first, sorta sounded like something that would be from Animal Crossing (the first part of singing after the opening) - I like the energy, don't really care for the song Is She Weird: - Mysterious vibe - I don't really care for the vocals in this song - The chorus is catchy Ana: - I like the guitar that plays throughout the song - Gives off a dreamy vibe All Over the World: - I like the vocals in this song The short guitar solo coming out of nowhere was unexpected but quite welcomed - Distorted talking was an interesting choice, I'm not sure if I like it or not Dig For Fire: - I don't like this song Down to the Well: - Wasn't memorable enough to remember it The Happening: - Not my favorite, not the worst Blown Away: - Interesting sound, but not for me Hang Wire: - Reminded me of older rock songs - definitely feels more 90s than the rest of the album Stormy Weather: - The pickup in tempo @ 1:01 was a nice shift - Repetitive Havalina: - Nice calming sound - Conflict between steel guitar and acoustic guitar didn't agree with me - The far-off-sounding vocals helped fit the distant sound of this song

This is definitely a pretty cool album alright! Similarly to The Smiths, I had never heard a Pixies song before. Unlike The Smiths, I'm not entirely sure if I had even heard of them before either. They did, however, influence some other bands that I like, so I was very eager to give this album a shot! And I gotta say, it was worth that shot. This album is great! The sound is pretty unique, but it really strikes a chord for me with it's blend of the lighter surf-rock and darker grunge styles. I think I saw a review on this site or some other site that said that some of the tracks don't stand out much on their own, but work really well together to form a great album. Honestly, I kind of agree. There were some great songs, don't get me wrong. I really liked Velouria, All Over the World, and Dig for Fire, for instance. But I feel that the experience of this album as a whole is probably better than the experience of most of these individual songs. Overall, I think this album is really good. Perhaps I'll be able to appreciate it a bit more once I get to some of their more popular albums like Surfer Rosa and Doolittle. Or maybe I'll like this one less in comparison. Who knows? But for now, I think I'll give it a 4/5.

Great album, unique sound, stellar music to listen to while doing other things.

Fun listen! Really liked Veloria and Is She Weird

It's more space-y than their previous albums and I love the sound of it. The songs don't stand out to me but the strength of this album is that it's overall very, very good. There's a bit of wildness, weirdness going on, too but that is what makes the album even more exiciting. Loved it!

Very much enjoy this album from the Pixies. For me this is one of their best. A band a head of their time for sure.

Can definitely see why it is influential. Songs are all over the place thematically but overall enjoyable. Solid 4 star.

Really enjoyable album! I loved the vibes and it was interesting the whole time. I was intrigued by it and now I want to check out more of their music.

Really good heavy alt rock with its catchy moments too No problems with it as far as I can see

Aw, this was a neat one. Pixies are growing on me!!

Stand outs: Allison, Ana, Dig for Fire, Down to the Well and Stormy Weather

Love Pixies. Not my favorite album by them. Heavier than others.

It's more Pixies which is great, and there are 4 or 5 classics. But being honest, it's post peak Pixies. The five star run of Come on Pilgrim, Surfer Rosa and Doolittle has come to an end, and you will have to settle for great, rather than manic perfection.

Not my favorite pixies

Pixies is just classic

I had always considered this album 3rd best of the pixies first three albums, but it's closer in quality to Surfer Rosa than Doolittle. This album is at it's best in the quieter groovy moments that come in every so often. The second half The Happening is a great example of this, and maybe one of my favourite parts of any Pixies song. Gil Norton does some fantastic work in the production. The highlights include Velouria, Dig For Fire, Havalina, Allison I would give this album a low 4, but a 4 none the less

The weakest of the classic run of Pixies but still great, better than I remembered

Decent punk album, no huge standouts

Not as good as Doolittle or Surfer Rosa but a very good and different album by the Pixies

pretty intense but not my style. INteresedting. varied style

really enjoyed

One has quite fond memories of this record, a bit unloved by Pixies purists, growing on me over time as one played it regularly, on cassette in the old beat-up cars one drove in college radio days, and wondering why others were so quick to denigrate it in comparison to eearlier releases. One kept quiet about it. One liked the mix of slow brooding and hot anger, likely because one felt much the same much of the time. Overall, baroque quality to this as they're indulging themselves a bit. Same happeened listening for first time in at least a decade, maybe two. One likes the quieter interludes, the breathing spaces, which give some of the sharper hooks more room to stand out and make an impression. First side is not that interesting, but it gets much better as it goes along, the stakes get raised hugely in terms of intensity and seriousness – "Ana" and "All Over the World" and "Dig for Fire" (which is superior to "Here Comes Your Man") and "The Happening" (the eerily sustained lonely vocal, scorching licks left to burn) and "Havalina," the excelent closer. Every song sounds like it could break into "Wave of Mutilation" at any time. Sounds like maybe it all happened too fast for the Pixies, like they seem to lose control of their records at times, and this is one of the instances to which it comes off quite effectively overall. Still lots to like and admire here and one believes this is every bit as good as Doolittle, though perhaps less appreciated for the sense of it having been rushed out. For both records, some culling would have amplified the power by condensing it.

Really good album. I liked the variation in feeling between tracks, which is why I like 90s alternative so much. Being able to be cohesively versatile is a really good marker of a band's talent. Favorite track: Velouria

The subversion of classic rock, the unusual lyrics, and the grunge sound are pretty interesting. Overall, I'm not that enthusiastic about this album, though — a weak 4 for me.

Love the pixies. This is a great album

OK, so I probably like Doolittle better than this record, and Trompe le Monde has better production and really rocks from start to end... but I love myself some Pixies, and this record has some absolute classics... Rock Music, Velouria, Is She Weird are all top shelf in my book. Great band, great album.

Really good, but maybe not quite up to the standard of their previous couple of albums. I still enjoyed it a lot, but feel it falls just short of the fifth star. 4.499999 stars!

This album grew on me while I was listening to it. Just very inventive and compelling all the way through even if there weren't really any stand out songs. I got about 3.5 stars of enjoyment out of it, but I'm going to bump it up to 4 stars because I'm pretty sure it will improve on repeated listens.

Definitely a pixies album

This is a very different album. I like that they try to do different things sonically from song to song. Overall pretty neat. I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would, especially after the bad second track. A low 4/5

Solid, interesting guitar work, been keen to listen to Pixies. Fav tracks: Ana, All Over The World, The Happening, Stormy Weather

I was sleeping on this one lol. Very solid follow up to Doolittle. As per usual with the Pixies, there’s a lot of variety with their sounds, which keeps their albums interesting. Yet something about this album in particular feels different but I’m not sure what. Might need some more listens for this one.

Really enjoyed this one. Probably could’ve used another listen cuz I don’t have too many specific things to say but it was a good album with a mix of classic, weird, and chaotic pixies sounding songs as well as some lighter ones that were a good change of pace. Also I remember talking to my dentist a few years ago about the pixies and this was his favorite album by them. Which would’ve made me think “wow this guy’s definitely a virgin” but he actually fucked my old dentist’s wife and now has kids with her. Anyways, solid follow up to Doolittle and I’ll definitely listen again.

Lotta songs about girls they down atrocious. I never got into the pixies but I definitely don’t hate this sound. Tim wasn’t lying, Havalina is a bangerrr

Wrote a whole thing o ur for it but didn’t save. I liked the variety and while it wasn’t all for me, most of it was. Best: havalina, velouria, digfor fire, the happening

Alternatingly grating, smooth, and sinister.

This had some really good songs

Not bad!

Velouria.

starts off a 5 but dips a bit later

When you ask a pixies fan which album they like best, about 1/3 says Surfer Rosa, about 1/3 says Doolittle and about 1/3 seems to enjoy Bossanova over the four others. And, once again, Bossanova is a superb album from the Pixies. But I fall in the group that doesn't have this one as their favourite. And I've now re-listened to this album a few times over the last two days and to me it falls short in comparison because after the legendary first half of this album I have the feeling of a little bit of boredom come over me during the second half. This album listens more like a straight forward rock album and a bit more poppy than other Pixies alums do. And that's not necessarily a bad thing, because if there's one thing Bossanova achieves is that it sounds like a whole, like an album that belongs together. A bit more than the sometimes disjointed other albums. But it lacks some of the magic and peaks that was happening on the two albums before this one. But it also lacks the sometimes terrible songs those two had and thus is the most consistent of the lot. And I kinda miss the background vocals of Kim Deal. I listened to this with a crazy amount of enjoyment, but it's just a small step below the first two.

Definitely has a Munsters theme -- I wonder if that influenced this album. I can see them influencing bands like the Smashing Pumpkins and I appreciate all the sci-fi spacey-esque aesthetics throughout these songs. It feels like music 90s Vampires would listen to around goblets of blood, velour, and crushed velvet. And I also hear a little snip-bits of The Smiths and even David Bowie? Solid. Gothic Surf Rock -- I'm all for it.

Trompe le Monde was my intro to The Pixies, and I was an instant fan. I quickly acquired the back catalogue. Bossanova was the last album to find my heart. It doesn't have the peaks of the other three albums, but I think it's the most consistent and a little more nuanced. You can tell the Pixies were changing. I love just about every track, though.

Herein, Pixies give the album form a true sense of place. That sense isn't really in the music: The apparent establishing at the beginning is merely a fakeout. Rather, the flow of songs and the recurrent notions give the band's grab-bag approach solid, solid shape.

I've never really listened to anything by the Pixies before, although I have heard of them. I listen to a podcast called The Ongoing History of New Music, and in a series of episodes they did on the start of Alt Rock, the Pixies and Sonic Youth were named a few key bands in the genres creation. None of this made me feel like I would enjoy Pixies, though, because a lot of people say in the early 90's you either liked Sonic Youth or Pixies. I reviewed an album by Sonic Youth a month or so ago, and I really didn't like Sonic Youth. If Pixies are anything like that noisy horseshit, it was going to be a poor review today. What I heard, however, although founded in the same ideals, was a much more polished sound. Sonic Youth were noisy for the sake of being noisy. The Pixies, although noisy, had a distinct direction and structure to their music. Also, the lead singer of the Pixies can actually sing. The first song on the record, Cecilia Ann, sounds like a thrashy, hardcore rock version of surfer rock; almost like if Kurt Cobain was in the Beach Boys. There is some great songs on this record, and these guys influenced so many groups that came after them like: Nirvana, Radiohead, Pearl Jam, and others. Overall, a surprisingly good record today. I will definately listen again! Favorite songs: Hang Wire, Down to the Well, Cecilia Ann, Velouria, Rock Music Least favorite songs: Havalina, All Over the World 4/5

As far afield in style from Doolittle as Doolittle was from Surfer Rosa, this is Black Francis at his happiest. Seeped in the surf rock sounds that had been in the background prior, you could be forgiven for thinking he’d escaped his pentecostal upbringing, but in reality Francis has just exchanged the gothic themes for more alien and cryptozoologic ones. And “Havalina” presaged some of his heartfelt solo ballads. Spell it out: not every song is a classic, but the highs are as high as anything else in their catalog.

Really married the freneticism of early Pixies with a kind of musical maturity. First time listening top to bottom - loved it.

Maybe their darkest and sparsest album but still with the great dynamics and guitar creativity that made me love them

At first, I thought I wouldn't enjoy this, but as the album went on u could appreciate it more

I've had a love/hate relationship with the Pixies before this album. Some of their stuff was pleasant, while other stuff just didn't click with me. That being said, I had a pretty good feeling that I was going to enjoy this album right from the get-go. The opening was energetic and lead in nicely to the second song. Maybe not the biggest fan of the vocals in 'Rock Music,' but they got better in subsequent songs. The lyrics are sometimes pretty simplistic, but they always work. Wild. "Is she weird, is she white, is she promised to the night?" I don't know why it works, but keep it up.

A fun and fast 90s rock album. Not quite grundge but honestly pretty close. Kind of crazy they went right off the rip into the decade and instantly put out an album that sounds like what it's known for. Some of the songs have 80s style drums which was fun. most songs were pretty short and went by pretty fast. I feel like you almost have to relisten to it to even remember the songs Score: 80 Art: 80

Had not listened to this Pixies album previously, but I enjoy this genre, so I enjoyed this. Quick listen with solid songs, it's collectively great. An awesome start to the 90's.

From distant star to this here bar The me, the you, where are we now? Hurray the blues of everyone, Allison Outstanding album, worth the listen. 4/5

I used to listen to this album a lot when I was at university. Contrary to what I've read, it's actually probably my favorite from Pixies. The songs are just pure vibes and the lyrics don't seem to matter. And yet they manage to paint some nice visuals (The Happening!). I'm tempted to give it a 5 but I think that I shouldn't and that it's just nostalgia talking through me influencing my opinion on this album. Ok, let's go down a bit, 4.5

Would listen to some again

I definitely enjoyed this more than the other Pixies album I got a while back. Will have to dig into the band deeper to decide if I really like them.

I love pixies but idk about 5

Much better than expected

Gritty.

As much as I don't want to like a nearly Kim Deal-less Pixies album, this collection of songs is just amazing.

Unhinged music for crazy people (term of endearment). Favorite Pixies album that I've heard (not gotten around to Doolittle yet - a felony in 197 countries - I know, I'm aware). Songs like "Velouria", "Is She Weird" and "Dig For Fire" are the type of music that would randomly start playing in your brain at 3AM when you're trying to fall asleep. (again, term of endearment). Also "Rock Music" goes hard. Don't trust people who say it sucks. It's what separates the boys from the men. Factual information.

These guy’s struggled to do a bad album back in the day, this is no exception

Great: Velouria, Allison, Is She Weird, All Over the World, Dig for Fire, The Happening, Havalina Good: Hang Wire, Stormy Weather, Down to the Well, Blown Away, Ok: The Rest Fantastic album! Almost perfect from start to finish although there are a few weaker points. Definitely not the masterpiece that is Doolittle but still a fantastic album!

pixies "ana" is nice did not think i'd be into this album at all bc "rock music" totally turned me off lol but the first song is also nice. surprised by how much i liked

Haven’t heard this one before. Really good! It seems more focused than their other stuff - not as much experimenting but a lot of catchy intros. The Happening was my favorite.

Another solid pixies album

Excelente album do pixies

Not the best Pixies album, so I don’t think it needs to be in this list. Nonetheless, still a good record.

Havalina

Enjoyed it, been a few years since I listened

Loud quiet loud. The pixies are awesome. Had not listened to this album previously and only heard Dolittle and best of

Good stuff. A bit monotone at times, but would absolutely put this album on again. Enjoyed the louder stuff more than the quiet

A solid album, but not my favourite from the Pixies. That said, starting your day by listening to Rock Music is highly recommended.

The 3rd best Pixies album to some (Critics and users on AOTY). My second Pixes album I have listened too fully, and it's a lot more intense than i remember Doolittle being. I did enjoy this, great listening experience. Overall 8/10

as slow starting but solid alt rock album. A great instrumental opener led into a somewhat lazy first half, but boy did they pick it up in the second half. The signature Pixies sounds rears its head and it is beautiful. 7/10.

Kim Deal's absence as a songwriter is noticeable. While still a member, she had formed the Breeders as a side project and channeled many songs there. Black Francis comes to the forefront and all of the elements that make Pixies distinct are present. Somewhat of a letdown after Doolittle, slightly sub-par Pixies is still better than most other bands.

I was really tempted to give this a 3/5, but I think I'm overly critical because I love Doolittle, their previous record, so damn much. But honestly this is a great alternative album. Lots of later bands who used Pixies as an influence can be heard here.

Well this rocks None of the Pixies songs I already knew and yet the most I’ve liked them

Weaker than Surfer and Doolittle so can't give it a 5 star, but it's still pretty great 👍🏻

Boss album. I dunno how I’ve never heard this before because I am a fringe Pixies fan. Anyway I really like it and some songs on here will be getting hammered.

Such a fierce voice

I tend to think the Pixies are too hard for my liking. However, Is She Weird, Ana, changed my mind. I realized I never really gave a good listen. Further into the album and All Over the World I started to see why folks go gaga over this band and I liked the juxtaposition of minimal and maximum sonic sounds. I like!

Had never heard this album before, and had never really listened to The Pixies before—I think I’ve been missing out on something great. Loved how unpredictable every track was, and the way it would meander through such different sounds from punky-grungy to an almost dark, melancholy tone. Would definitely listen to this again.

Awesome album that I have never heard before. Really good vibes on first listen and want to listen to it more. Success!

This album is surf-rock on a collision course with grunge, with a smattering of shoe gaze. Love the songs that go from really quiet to REALLY LOUD. Some interesting lyrics about religion and space? Pretty complete album from beginning to end with only a few weak tracks. Can definitely see how their sound influenced the likes of Weezer, Modest Mouse and a bunch of other late 90s bands. 4/5.

I dont remember liking this very much. I stick with the material up to and including Doolittle and rarely venture outside of it. I was wrong. This album is overall pretty good. It opens in a fantastic manner. There are a few "meh" songs to be found. Those early records had nothing "meh" on them. So I guess this really isn't in the same league as those others, but I will definitely return to some of these songs again.

Ayyy pixies. I liked surfer Rosa so I'm excited for this one.

My first impression here after the opening track started was “hey Pixies, 1973 called and they want their drum sound back.” Apart from that “Cecilia Ann“ was a pretty cool opening instrumental. This is the first Pixies album that I’ve listened to. I’ve read that it’s not their best, but it impressed me enough to want to check out more of their stuff. Interesting song writing on here overall. I’d give it a 3.5 but I’ll round up because it’s on 4 AD and I like that label

Très bon, à réécoute

best schappelijk erg pixies idd

Really good album set the stage for grunge in the 90s

They are freaks. Why did I love it?

3.6 strong interesting rock but not overall memorable.

Hard rock/Alternative

Basic musically. Lyrics are obscure most of the time. The second part of the album is better to my taste. It feels rebellious and teenagously disorganized. Which is nice if you are in that mood. I liked it overall…

Solid Pixies.

Compared to Surfer Rosa, which I recently listened to, this one was a lot easier to get into. I really liked it.

I was familiar with a couple songs (and those are still my favorites) but listening to the rest of the album was definitely worth my time! The opening track blew me away, what a bombastic one! I want to come back to this one in my own time and experience it again, I feel like it could grow a little more on me. The Pixies create a mood that only they can do and sometimes it hits just right.

I love the Pixies, but of the three albums they have on the list, this one is my least favorite. Doolittle and Surfer Rosa are both pretty much perfect, while this album has a couple of smaller missteps. Again, compared to other albums, it's great, but compared to the two other Pixies entries, it's just not quite as strong. I'm not going to go below 4 stars because I do like this album a lot, but is it required on the 1001 list if you already have Surfer Rosa and Doolittle?

Huh. I kinda didn't like this, even though I was expecting too. The songs all seem like 1 minute too long. But then I listened to it in my car instead on my headphones, and I was like, Hell Yeah. The Pixies. Rock that shit pixies, don't even worry if nothing sounds clear. That's rawness. That's rawdawg rock grunge post punk energy and you got it.

Good ol’ mainstream appeal album. It is a good Pixies album, a little less savage, screamy, distorted as some of the other albums (if I recall correctly). The name fits the title, smooth ass Pixies. Fun! You’ll like it. Probably. We started the day with sebadoh and, boyo, let me tell you, that shit went waaaayyyyy harder than this. And that’s a surprise, because Lou Barlow is a softy. I guess young Lou went hard. Oh well, this album will make you feel like you’re almost listening to the radio. Enjoy.

Pixies are a hard one to place, stylistically. Great album

Pretty good album. We used to listen to the Pixies and Frank Black a lot in High School, so this brings back good memories. Always felt that they were kind of a hit-or-miss band, and this album is no exception. First few songs start out strong, but by the end of the album I was ready for something else.

ca a changé la musique brésilienne

Pixies bring the surf rock in an enjoyable if less dynamic album then Doolittle and Surfer Rosa. The band sounds great and Black’s obsessions with aliens and space are explored here. Velouria is up there with their best, Is She Weird is a moody little number, Down to the Well is Black I’m psychotic mode and The Happening is the surprisingly touching story of an alien going lost and ending up in Area 51.

Not as good as first two albums

good album!

buenardópolis 8/10

What's not to love about the Pixies?! This album falls short of some of their earlier albums for me, but is still vibrant and energetic and fun.

This was the sound at EVERY college party back in the day. And sooo many bands got inspired by them. However, Doolittle is the better album. And "Gigantic" from Surfer Rosa remains my favorite from the band. While this is still a great album, I do need to put it into context.

This is a really good album.

I really do like the Pixies, but I don’t tend to spin much of their stuff past their first two albums + Come On Pilgrim. Playing this in full for the first time in ages reminds me of why. This really does feel like their attempt to court the mainstream, and has less of the charming idiosyncrasies that makes their earlier stuff timeless. Still, when it hits it hits, and it has plenty of bangers to make it worth adding to the collection. B

Pixies are great and this is a good album.

Cool and enjoyable. Not The Pixies best work in my opinion, but still fun to listen to. At points it can feel groundbreaking, while at others it feels like it almost drags. The vocals are cool and the guitar work is so active and fun to listen to. This record is great and shows that the Pixies were definitely pushing their genre at points. Favorite Track: Velouria Least Favorite Track: Hang Wire

i liked it better with headphones than stereo

Never heard of this band or their music but they made me a fan.

Nice taste to classic 90's rock with its own spin. favourite is probably 'Is She Weird' and will definitely listen to this album again in the near future.

Nice power cord mix. Short songs high energy to not overload the senses. For that matter best songs didn’t use sentences…

This is really freaking good!

Havalina is one of my all time favorite songs.

like it

Every television station should break into severe weather coverage with the chorus of "Stormy Weather". I can't believe this hasn't already happened. Chalk it up to society's loss. Maybe not the best Pixies album, but that doesn't mean it isn't great. I credit SNL alum Garrett Morris, who apparently lived in the same apartment complex that the band was living in at the time.

I love the Pixies, but it’s weird that it’s Bossanova and not Doolittle, which arguably has all the good hits on it. Still, classic late 80s/90s rock.

From what I had heard from the Pixies already I liked. Solid album all round. Listened to it twice.

Quite liked it. Might be better than Dolittle.

Unique sound. The vocals fit with instrumentals in a subtle way but it really works. Aside from “Rock Music” the album was nicely congruent.

Pixies never really appealed to me, now after a couple of times i started to like it ..... as nice background music that is

its difficult to write something about an album that is on the good side of OK. its fine. much easier to slag off something for being shite.

Oh, Madeline my dear is that a white rose? You know how I adore them. My grandfather had the most magnificent rose garden with over 200 different species. Every Friday, he'd go out into the garden, clip a dozen, and make my grandmother a beautiful bouquet. He'd hand it to her and she would accept with a wistful look in her eye and sunshine in her heart. He would then push her against the wall and ravage her to within an inch of her life. Does love like that exist anymore?

Mmmm those are some tasty, tasty lamb chops

Dope, not their best shit, but a lot of good shit

A jagged lo-fi rock album with a great energy. Less polished and lacking the radio singes of Dolittle, but more of a consistent and authentic piece. I really liked this. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: Cecilia Ann Date listened: 26/05/22

Worst of the original albums and it’s still great.

Oh wow, this my first of 3 Pixies' albums from this list. On first listen I wasn't too sure but after the second listen I was left wanting more. Not quite a 5 but something worth further exploration. Faves: Velouria, Dig for Fire

I did not know this side of Pixies. Dark and desperate. The album is solid and tough.

so I’ve heard three of their albums now Surfer Rosa, Doolittle, and Bossanova and honestly, I think my favorite was Doolittle like the others were great but that was most enjoyable anyway Bossanova was really fun, had some great stuff, it’s probably an 8/10

The Pixies are a band that I have always felt like I need to listen to more. This album solidified that position...enjoyed it quite a lot. Hopefully there is more on this list. 4/5

Ja lekker, een wat rauwere Pixies.

Has some great tunes, love pixies 7.5/10

Woah there is some chugga in this opening track. Velouria is a cool 90s track. Is She Weird is a real power fun example of this 90s proto alt sound. Havalina is a good closer.

A step below Sufer Rosa and Doolittle but still a really good album. No immediately catchy songs that stay in your head even after a first listen...you know like; Here Comes Your Man or where is my Mind, but there are songs that reward multiple listens. Like Velouria, Is She Weird, The Happening. All in all an excellent album for Pixies fans; 4 🌟

Muy bueno

first listen jangly indie rock

Rock indie. Bastante interesante.

Going into this album, I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did. Is it a new fave? No. But would I listen again? Absolutely yes. This alternative rock album straddles a space between 80s new wave and 90s grunge, and I was able to pick up influences of both genres in these songs, which I greatly enjoyed. Some of the tracks, both musically and lyrically, are just a bit experimental and weird, but in the perfect amounts. This is another album where the whole thing is better than the individual pieces. In a world where albums now so often seem written for and around some singles, I always find albums that are clearly intended to be one continuous experience to be interesting.

The Pixies doing what they do best, full of passion and pride in each track. Just like with their other albums, they manage to squeeze over a dozen songs in just 40 minutes, two-thirds clocking no more than 3 minutes. Yet the variety is there: we start with a Dick Dale heavy surf piece, followed by abrasive garage rock, then a romantic, melodic hit. The major pull is that smooth surf sound that blows you away due to the awesome production, so good that even Nirvana sought their producer. No major duds, they each have a unique theme and are short enough that you don't have time to dislike any. Bossanova is an underrated amazing follow-up. Favorites: Velouria, Ana, All Over the World

Alternative rock. Grunge-adjacent. Good energy, a little noisy at times. Some moments of distorted sounds/textures (space rock?). Would listen to again, just have to keep the volume a little lower - I don't know if it's a particular tone or something, but it wanted to give me a headache even though I was liking most of the songs.

Standard Pixies. Good.

Funny without cracking jokes, serious without striking poses, curious without paying homage.

An essential rock album

why is it called Bossanova though?

Lo mejor q les he oido

3.5 stars. After a second listen it started to grow on me more.

Track 2 "Rock Music" felt horribly out of place and awful to listen to. Everything else was what I expected and obviously influential to the genre.

Shoegazey and straight up mania.

A great way to start 90s alt. rock.

This band is great, and Kim Deal is just so super cool.

I am weirdly less familiar with this Pixies album than their other stuff. Now why would that be? Anyway, it's still awesome, even if it doesn't give me nostalgia tingles. Fave track - "Velouria" I reckon, though "Dig for Fire" is a contender too....

Good, but nothing stuck out individually for me. Maybe needs another listen

A solid album from the Pixies. Not their best in my opinion but still lots of good tracks on here. 4/5 stars

Heard it before, a good album. Not their greatest but all-in-all good

Solid rock

A classic alt-rock album. Kinda punky, kinda outer-spacey. Not as good as Doolittle but great Pixies album overall. Favorite Track: Dig For Fire Relisten: Yes

snazzy

The same twisted, dissonant, weird surf-rock that the Pixies served up on "Doolittle". I still enjoy it, though it's not as front-to-back tight as "Doolittle" was. Favorite tracks: "Rock Music", "Velouria"

Men Rock music?????

Not the biggest Pixies fan. That all changed when I saw them in Santa Fe with Ms Kim wearing sweatpants. That’s rock and roll. Just ask Jerry Garcia. Fun pick me up rock album. 3.75 out of 5.

In The Pixies discography, this is the first album that is merely very good. I feel like there isn't the same emotional range or weight behind the songwriting that they had in their prior material. A little slicker and more polished but loses some nuance. Still some great songs here. Always loved "Is She Weird" and "Ana" especially, but I feel like the album slowly loses some steam towards the end, even though it's relatively short.

During listening, I thought "Oh, I listened to one album by Pixies and it sounded completly different, that's good!" Then I realized that they were The Smiths.

Pixies go surf/scifi - songs about girls, weirdness, the elements, weird girls, now with added reverb and theremin

Hits even darker and harder than Doolittle. Really enjoyed that.

Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Cecilia Ann, Rock music, Allison, Is she weird, Hang wire

I really do not listen to Pixies enough, and when I do it’s usually Doolittle, which is probably their best album. But this album kinda rules too.

It’s so weird but so good

It's a good album but nowhere near their best. Surfer Rosa and Doolittle have way more going for them. Still; Ana, Is She Weird, and Dig For Fire are all lovely songs.

Like Pavement, an altrock classic, but a little too odd for me. Nevertheless, a strong one.

American, 90s, Alternative rock + Various, interesting = Male - {3/14}

Kurt Cobain once said he was afraid people would say "Smells Like Teen Spirit" sounded too much like Pixies. I finally get that comparison now.

this was surprisingly complex

Not sure if I've ever listened to Pixies before. Pretty good alternative rock. Interesting song structuring and skilled musicians. A nice album to listen to.

Love the Pixies. It lost some of the rawness on this album but still some great tracks. Velouria one of my favourites of theirs

Squally! Not my favourite Pixies album, but has enough fun and weird moments to hold my interest.

First introduction to the Pixies, and it took a couple of listens to get into it. Love 90s alt rock and the Pixies created that sound. Wired lyrics, always melodic but also edgy at the same time. Will need to explore them more. Solid 4 at the point!

Very 90s vibe. Dig it.

Redemption time de Pixies pa mi. Letras bien cagadas. Fav: cecilia Ann y Is she weird?.

Great sound to rock out to lol. Mamma likey

Back to back Pixies albums! Another chance to learn more about a band I feel like I already be familiar with. For me, Bossanova is a big step-up over Surfer Rosa. It carries a wider range of sounds making it a more interesting listen from start to finish. To me, its built on the sound established in the earlier album but managed more melodic melody lines going through them. It's still not a style that I'm super interested in though. But after this album I do find myself more interested in exploring more of their music. I probably would give this 3 stars again in an island, but to contrast it with Surfer Rosa I'm bumping it up.

Never ever thought I’d say I enjoyed rock music but here we are. Didn’t enjoy the more typical rock tracts like ‘Rock music’ (go figure) and ‘Is she weird’. A lot of great tracts but The Happening and Velouria made it to the 1001 playlist

Great album. Has a great 90's rock feel but still holds up over time.

Amazing beginning track

Love the Pixies. It sounds like a cross between melodic punk and surf music.

Letzteres, Is she weird, Ana und the happening sind meine Favoriten

Alltime Favourite. Teen Spirit Vibes

Wieder ein klasse Pixies-Album!

The Pixies show what made them such a unique force in this album. You not only get the love songs, but also the grunge and early alternative creativity that made them such a force.

Quite interesting but enjoyable.

Not their best album, but still very good

Just awesome, nice and cheering music. I definetely need to dive more into Pixies later. Best album I have listened to so far. Mainly I recommend "Is she weird?" and "All over the world".

Will definitely be trying more albums from them. Really enjoyed it

Good album, Emil loved it

I did not expect to enjoy this so much. Good one to work out to & to feel slightly unhinged

Great album!

It's not my favourite, but still pretty good

Fun alt/grunge angst. No bossa nova influences.

No suena tan crudo.

Pretty decent rock album with a nice grunge sound. 'Cecilia Ann' is a very strong opening, and the overall tone is consistent throughout the album, but I would have liked to see more variation within songs. 7/10, something about the song-writing or instrumentation feels like it stopped short of a better album.

Passion above six out of 6. As cool as Kim Deal

Pixies are in my all time top 10 so I think this album is an interesting to represent them. It is not the album I would have chosen. It is not the top of their game, and it is not the most representative of them. I mean, given how much I love them I still think it's better than most things out there, but I can't give it a 5. That goes to Surfer Rosa. I need half stars.

Not a fan of the vocals, but guitar parts were cool

Great album. But it was overpassed for future albums

Pretty good! Just good old fashioned hard rock music

really liked this album. the short songs are really fun. super quick enjoyable album.

this came after i'd stopped listening to them, though i was aware of it at the time. i still liked it, especially the last track (havalina) - that was a nice surprise

Fantastic

Not their strongest album - odd that it's on this list. But it's hard to go wrong with the Pixies.

They opened for U2 on the Achtung Baby tour with this record.

Really good. Thoroughly enjoyed.

Very first impression, kudos to whomever mixed this album. Sound is great. You can see how the Pixies influenced Weezer in this album.

Good album. Classic punk vibes

UGBHHHHH yeah. Velouria does something to a man.

Nice to listen to passively

I like alt rock and this album is no exception. I like how lyrics are bot at tbe centre of attention here and the distored guitar is the main focus on this album.

This is what real alternative is.

purty decent, if a little obtuse fav track: havalina

Probably my 3rd favorite pixies album out of the 3 I know

A bit of a rougher rock, less catchy melodies, but cool backing instruments. Fave songs: Havalina

is this bossanova?

I am a huge fan of Surf Rock, and already really enjoyed the Frank Black album in this list previously. So when I realized this one had heavy Surf-Rock vibes, I was very excited. "Is She Weird", "Allison", "Velouria", "Dig for Fire", "Havalina", "Stormy Weather"

Raw and melodic start, exactly what I search for in a band. The screaming of the second song is a little tough to get through. Not really my style. The third truly settles my initial thoughts whereas it wouldn't be my style with highly melodic singing and an incredible style. I like the guitar in the fifth song, "Is she weird". Along with the lyrics it's a great song. "Ana" is a nice change of pace. All in all a great album, Is she weird, down to the well, and Cecilia Ann were insta adds to my playlist.

This album is a jam. I hadn’t listened much to the pixies catalog and this one seemed to rate pretty low. I liked it a lot, quite a few fun tracks.

I hear so many subsequent bands in this album

def leppard and ac/dc vibes

Talented guys. Manic sound

Actually ended up liking this album more than I thought I would. There’s a lot of variety here and the Pixies manage to make their sound more assessable while still retaining some of that uniqueness that made them famous

It’s just not up to scratch. I love Pixies but ‘Bossanova’ was always a bit of a let down. It’s not an actual bad album; listening to it, I am miles away from having a bad time. It’s just that I’m never thinking “This is the best Pixies record”. I’m sure there are other acts I can listen to their “lesser” works without having to be constantly comparing them with their best; I just enjoy them as they are. Pixies are just one of those bands that having hit such highs, it’s difficult to accept them at anything below those peaks. Most people would agree if I was talking about their comeback material, but I assume few will think the way I do about this album. Honestly though, I also listened to ‘Trompe Le Monde’ today and I preferred it! I never thought I would be giving any Pixies album in the 1001 less than 4 stars, but it seems I was wrong.

Fun. No other notes here

I liked it more than I thought I would, and it's obvious some bands I like were influenced by them. I'd listen to it again.

Another Pixies record - I think I prefer this to Doolittle? Still not REALLY my thing, but this one is a bit weirder and I dig that. Standouts: Cecilia Ann, Velouria, Allison, Hang Wire

Fine, but not amazing.

Fine - not much to say about this one.

Really solid album. Giving this an 3 for now but I have a feeling it’d grow on me with repeated listens. Every time I listen to the Pixies, I wonder why they didn’t get bigger in the early 90s.

I have no strong feelings toward this album. Some songs were fine; Others felt like endless noise. Favorite track: Allison

Starts incredibly strong before hitting a few rough patches. Back half is enjoyable alternative I'd listen to again, although unremarkable. Could see myself turning on the first 3-4 songs of the album again and then getting pretty heavy on the skip button. Ultimately doesn't have the hit power of Doolittle or other Pixies records. 3.5/5

339/1089 i liked it but i feel my expectations were skewed a bit bc of Where Is My Mind. Havalina was my fave 64/100

Mix of grungier and softer fare, which works well as a package.

This was my first time listening to Pixies and their sound was not what I expected at all. This was a solid and raw-sounding record.

I like the pixies but this isn’t their best work IMO

This felt super rushed, not a single memorable line. Still catchy and weird, but definitely felt like there was a deadline.

Ok, I guess. I wanted to like it, and some tracks are quite cool, some are boring to me, though. I don't know what to make of this, really.

weirdly almost feels like this band's twee album. Maybe I'm just realizing that the singer kind of sounds like the singer of Belle and Sebastian

this didn’t inspire me or uninspire me… good but not bad but not great!

Solid background music, but nothing really jumped out at me, strange because I loved Doolittle. Perhaps I had my expectations set a certain way, but this was just ok for me. Dig for Fire, Stormy Weather is good for stormy weather,

Felt about the same about this one as the last Pixies album, but maybe enjoyed this one slightly more partly due to actually listening to it straight through instead of in little spurts throughout the day. Had a fun energy but I'm good with just the one listen.

I love the Pixies. This album is rough.

Kim Deal=Cool Every time I hear the name, Kim Deal, cool usually follows. I learned it from a Dandy Warhols song, Cool As Kim Deal. I only ever knew Where is My Mind? For some reason Surfer Distortion popped into my head half through the album. That's how think this best describes this. Don't know why? Just does. 3

This was quite nice, but not sure it’s more than 3

A rock album maybe a bit more toward punk or pop or the 90s. I know the pixies but I don't think any of their famous songs are on this album.

Bäst är Allison, Is she weird, Ana, Havalina

more enjoyable than i thought

didnt pay much attention to it, but there some good songs and bad ones also, but they are the pixies, so 3, 3.5

Lots of short tracks with mostly instrumentals

Nothing special here. This is really supposed to be one of the 1001 albums you need to hear before it all ends? No, certainly not.

Pixies albums are a bit of a weird band with me, they tend to be very good in the first half and fall of a giant cliff in the second half. I honestly don't get why that happens, even though I always go in with a open mind. Anyways, this album is less song fragment-y than Surfer Rosa or Doolittle. Just like those albums it has the sickest instrumentation ever, but the vocals sometimes are a bit lacklustre. Frank Black or Black Francis or whatever his stage name depending on the song, perfect or just god-awful, all while being one guy. I find the song "Velouria" way too cheesy, I've been aware of this song before listening to the album from listening to it in curated alternative playlists made for me. I feel like the song is just them trying to make another song like "Where Is My Mind?" and "Here Comes Your Man," that song is a bit pathetic. Would I listen to it again? Probably not. It's underwhelming. if I were to give the Pixies another shot, I'd just listen to Surfer Rosa or Doolittle. Highlight Song/s: "Cecillia Ann" and "Rock Music"

I LOVE the pixies but I’m not convinced this album belongs on the list. It’s not 100% for me

Not bad.

Decent
