I was not impressed with this album, the beats and production felt flat, the flow was lackluster and aside from a few decent lines the lyrics weren’t really anything special.
I'm not listening to this one. One star for an idiot that I won't waste my time streaming.

I just don't get it. I know how much praise he used to get but I'd never heard much from Mr Ye himself, so I was expecting more from this. It was a struggle to get through. Don't think I've ever listened to a rap album and come away thinking it was pretentious. The lyrics were often terrible, I don't think I'll ever be in the mood for a 9 minute song where the last 3 minutes was monologue about a girls p***y. Kanye is a stuck up rich kid with a stunted view and that comes across in this release. Even the rifts were repetitive, songs that were too long and didn't go anywhere. There were maybe 2 tracks that I liked but way more that had me checking the time like "how has it only been 30 seconds".

Okay, putting aside the whole Kanye debacle...I can't fault it for being weird and experimental but it doesn't sing for me at all. It's just kind of boring and not fun. When every 30 seconds you decide to change up the entire song, for the whole album, it's just a mess.

I'll try and be brief: I really liked this album and was in a phase of my life at the end of high school/starting college when I listened to this album heavily and got into Kanye (thanks to a 21st Century Schizoid man sample in 'Power') for a while. I even saw him live with Kendrick Lamar opening for him. This album is a hip hop masterpiece in and of itself, Kanye at his creative height beyond the producer-turned-college-dropout indie rapper and into this maximalist king of both worlds (and still suck at mixing drums right). But he's also an avid nazi. Not even just a sympathizer, a nazi. He can fuck off. Outkast weren't nazis and made albums just as creative as ABDTF, and perhaps even better. 5/5 otherwise. But nazis are hateful scum. Such a shame.

I was surprised by many things on this recording. The production, the musicianship, the arrangements were all unexpected for me. I didn't like it and won't listen to it again but there were seconds that took me by surprise. I had never listen to a Kanye record before and so I didn't know what to expect. It was different than I thought it would be.
More like con-nay. I hated this when it came out, and I hate it even more now that Kanye’s praising Hitler and shit. I never understood why he has fans, really. You want to listen to a guy aggressively talk about how great he is at you for an hour (how much better he is than you, by the way), and then conjure poetic images centered around his balls. I don’t want to listen to something that’s going to make me think about someone’s balls. Fuck this guy. People here praise the production value- well, of course it has a high production value. He threw like a billion dollars at it. You can heavy produce a turd, but at the end of the day, you’re still just squashing a turd into your ears. We should uncancel cancel culture to wipe this scum from human memory.

Some of the songs on this album are really good but I have a really hard time enjoying them knowing what kind of person Kanye is. I just don't like him as a person and it causes me to not like his music even though I'm sure it's not bad.

As you know, the policy around here is no streaming revenue for Nazi scum, so I’m listening to: Born This Way (2011) by Lady Gaga This is such a fun album. 12 of the 14 songs are certified bangers; if this doesn’t make you want to dance, I’m gonna question if you like music. It’s a celebration of love, the LGBT community, feminism, sex, and just being young and free. A bonus is that ‘Judas’ pissed off the religious community, which is always fun. Every time I listen to this album it puts me in a great mood, and today was no different; an excellent way to start a Friday. It won’t count in the official rankings since I will be giving the Kanye album a 1, but this will unofficially join the ranks of my elite albums as my ninth 5/5.

Principle
I want to preface this by saying I completely understand why this is here - really did influence a lot of the sounds of the decade. But I do think it’s overproduced and overrated. Was neutral about this album in high school - dont really like it now. Absolutely hate his voice, flow is mediocre at best, and while some of the lyrics were fine, there was always at least one or two downright stupid lines that ruined the whole song. No amount of great guest features and interesting samples will make me like this, sorry. :( Favs: None

Since he’s a self-proclaimed Nazi, this only gets 1 star. To briefly separate artist from the art, I’d say this album is at a 3 for me. I liked Dark Fantasy and All of the Lights, plus some of the samples and featuring artists in other songs. Kanye was probably the worst part about all of the songs and his ego and misogyny are a major turn off.
Some of it is fine but there's just so much garbage. And then there's the album itself.
I really thought about skipping this one but I haven't missed a day yet so I just went ahead with it. I really enjoyed the 10 or so seconds of "21st Century Schizoid Man" that was sampled at one point. The rest, well, not so much - or not at all really.

It's uncomfortable to listen to Kanye nowadays. Kanye's voice is generally the worst part of each of his songs, and knowing how drug abuse can exacerbate mental health issues, those lyrics are more disturbing than enjoyable. Same goes for lyrics about violence against women. Power and All of the Lights are undeniable hits.

It's a big aside but putting his MAGA, racist, misogynist, crazy, anti-Taylor actions aside I still don't get what it is that people like about his "music." Now that I'm schooled in Kendrick Lamar, The Fugees, and The Pharcycle I know what good rap should sound like. I would feel bad because he's so clearly struggling with mental health issues but I don't because he is fundamentally dark and twisted. He even told us that 15 years ago.
To begin with, the beats are okay and the production is fine which makes for a slick, slick mediocre record that for some reason is very popular and sold millions. The reality of this dark twisted fantasy is Kanye West is the most overrated and (self) hyped artist, probably ever. I'm not an expert in hip hop or rap, but to my ears there is nothing special, beautiful or earth-shattering about this album. I would have given this maybe a 3 or 2 if it was any artist other than West, but I could try to be somewhat objective and ignore the shitty human being he is...nope, sorry I can't.

This album is the musical equivalent of a gilded trash fire. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy sounds like what would happen if someone handed a malfunctioning ego a billion-dollar budget and told it to paint its feelings in JPEGs. It’s overproduced, overwrought, and undercooked — a monument to indulgence where actual musical ideas go to get buried beneath walls of noise, guest verses pretending to be profound, and vocal takes so bloated with self-importance they may as well arrive via gold-plated parachute. “Runaway” is nine minutes long and somehow manages to say nothing except “I’m awful, but make it art.” “Blame Game” turns into a voicemail. “Power” is catchy in the way migraine auras are visually interesting. The production is technically impressive, sure, but so is a fireworks display at a landfill — doesn’t mean you want to sit through it. Everything here is trying to be cinematic and mythic, but it ends up sounding like an expensive identity crisis broadcast through a distortion pedal. It’s an exhausting slog of operatic narcissism, where every good idea is smothered by five worse ones. The features are dragged into the quicksand one by one, forced to shout platitudes into the void. By the end, it feels less like an album and more like a cry for help from someone who thinks help is beneath him. A bombastic, baffling, and utterly joyless monument to a man who thinks he's a misunderstood genius, when really he just needed someone to say "no."

Yikes, this one is going to be hard to listen to with an unbiased perspective in light of all the crap our favorite unhinged, bipolar nazi has pulled the last few years. I was dreading this album making an appearance, and here it is. At least it's come early in this project, so lets get it over with. I listened. I cringed a lot. I didn't want to give him any listens but I did it anyway for the sake of musical enlightenment. Yeah, I'm still biased. Now for my scathing review: I think Kanye is a clown with a persecution complex fueled by mental illness and an inflated sense of self-importance. That aside, I don't like his flow and I don't think his rhymes are all that great. None of it is clever. The man just throws in an object or person to get the rhyme so much, it bothers the hell out of me. The man is not a singer. The best parts of most of his songs are arguably the featured artists. Musically this album is actually pretty ok, at least Kanye incorporates a lot of instruments and styles in his tracks and the beats are good. I just wish I didn't have to hear his whiny voice over top of it all. Lyrics I thought were subpar, going on and on about Kanye's lifestyle and how great he is. Here's an example of his exemplary (read with heavy sarcasm) storytelling: "Ah, put the pussy in a sarcophagus, Now she claiming that I bruised her esophagus." Here's another: "My presence is a present, kiss my ass." Ugh. Both from the same song, "Monster." Its all just so played out and exhausting after the first 10 minutes. "Hell Of A Life" might be the most annoying song on the album, with stupid lyrics autotuned to imitate Sabbath's "Iron Man" over top a cowboy clip-clop track with digital harpsichord. Just awful. Standouts if I had to pick them are "Power" - I think this is honestly the only Kanye song I've heard previously - "All Of The Lights" - for the drum machine and Rihanna, honestly - "Runaway" - the second half was instrumental and was a nice break. I'll admit I very badly wanted to give this album 1 star from the go ahead. I wanted to not even listen, give it 1 star, and wait for my next album. But I gave it a shot. I even toyed with rating it 2 stars for having some catchy beats at times, but man, I would never listen to any of this again and I can only listen to Kanye beat himself up for so long. Poor guy with such a great life and money and power doesn't need any charity stars from a guy like me. So might as well pile on the Kanye pity party and go ahead and give it that 1 star. If this is Kanye's best, lord help me if I ever have to listen to his worst. People love it, I just don't get the hype. Punch Nazis, kids, and stop making stupid people famous.
While excellently produced and arranged, the subject matter is really a celebration of neoliberalism. "I will get money and fame at all costs" is the running moral code. This is not a cry against the system so much as a plea for our fucked up system to please favor him instead of anyone else. Kanye was never one of the good ones. You can detect a lot of the weirdness we now condemn him for already in this record. When Kendrick raps they not like us, he's not just talking about Drake, it's this. These rich kids who want to get even more rich. Kanye was never on the streets. Why does he rap so much about people hating him? Because it's transparent this man has no real authenticity, his motivations are not connection or speaking truth to power but getting ahead and pulling up the ladder. And doing bitches, lots of bitches.

I saw him live once. Waited so long for him to come out the drink I had pregamed with wore off. Show wasn't bad though. I used to enjoy his stuff, good lyrics, flow and beat. Then he started talking all Hitler was a good guy and went on Alex Jones with a white supremacist. I hope he gets the help he needs, but I'm not giving him anymore of my money. This would be a 4-5 star album. I can't give it that though.
This is #day259 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… fuck Kanye West. Honestly, I think he should be dropped from the list for a whole bunch of reasons. At this point, three of his albums are included, and zero are from, say, Slowdive or Deftones, or other bands and artists who are more important and influential. I listened to The College Dropout in full back on #day10 because I told myself then that no matter the music, I'd check out every single album, as that's what the challenge is about. I must admit, since then, there have been a couple of exceptions when I couldn't get through the whole record. I tried listening to one song today, too, and nope. I don't want to hear this before I die, and I wish the same for you. This is a 1 out of 5. Looking forward to #day 260.

Sure, I was convinced back when this came out. The album was all the rage, everybody's darling. Voice of our generation. And it had enough to offer to make me look past the things that, in hindsight, had rubbed me the wrong way from the start. It's larger than life, but not in a quietly confident way and instead an obnoxious look-at-me way. There's obviously still a lot to like in the music, but to make a long story short: Shut the fuck up Kanye, you literal nazi cretin.

Me encantaria decir que es un álbum de mierda pero no (no lei la letra de ninguna de las canciones, asi que seguro hay un monton de cosas que no pude entender del todo bien), que bronca que este tipo sea tan pelotudo e infumable. Rate: 4 estrellas por que me hizo mover, en momentos se escucharon intrumentales con mucha epicidad y se agradece sin embargo -3 estrellas porque kenye west es una persona de mierda y tampoco creo tener la necesidad de volver a escuchar este album

It's amazing how separated I am culturally from some types of music. Collectively, these songs have had about 4 BILLION listens on spotify, yet I hadn't heard (of) a single one of them. Musically is not that bad, but when I read about the production process I feel sick. 24 hours recording sessions for a guy that believes he's a god. I just can't take this kind of art. At least there is only one more certified nazi album I have to skip on this list (that I know of). I can sum up what makes me hate this record in one lyric: "'Cause the same people that tried to black ball me/ Forgot about two things, my black balls" (from "Gorgeous"). I don't care. Congratulations... and people ate this shit up like he was a god-like rapper and lyricist. Look, this isn't my favorite genre, it wasn't fed to me along with my fentanyl-laced fruit loops. I don't know who the guest spots are by, I just listened based on pure sonics and lyrics. It's funny to think a few albums ago in my list people were complaining about the lyrics to a Motorhead album. These are a thousand times worse. The lyricist here comes off like a horrible, juvenile, misogynistic, paranoid, narcissistic, sociopathic person, there's just no way around it. And a lot of the lyrics are obviously references to little petty squabbles. That shit just isn't going to stand the test of time. The backing tracks are varied and interesting, at least. I was actually interested to dive into this partly because I'd always heard Yeezy was such an innovator back in the day. Man. Actual innovators need to take note of "Lookin' at my bitch, I bet she give your ass a bone", "I sent this bitch a picture of my dick", and other golden aphorisms. I guess it took big balls to stretch a 3 minute song ("Runaway") out to 9 minutes, or use a Black Sabbath melody to spruce up a hypnotic throwaway x-rated jam ("Hell of a Life"). "Lost in the World" ended up being the only tolerable, fully-formed track for me. Maybe because Gil Scott Heron was invoked? ... but then the last track just straight-up lifts GSH's message, perhaps trying to bring some gravitas to a record that doesn't have any. This record makes no sense and has no merit outside of the time, place and context in which it was made. Will they be teaching it in 400 years like Chaucer is taught today? I doubt it.

Here's another artist where I break from the pack. I do not like Kanye on the whole. I think he's an extremely overrated, egotistical, pampered artist that's been told he's a genius so long that he thinks he's a god. And all of that comes across in his work. His rhymes are decent (if self-indulgent) and his delivery has that lazy "I'ma get to it when I get to it" cadence which isn't my favorite. The production is, of course, off the charts good because it's a Kanye record. It's telling that the best moments on this record are the ones where the guest artists bring heat. The production really IS phenominal, though. And, when I stop and listen to THAT instead of trying to evaluate this record on Ye's bars (like I would any other rap artist), I like this album a lot more. I just can't with these lyrics though. So much shit. Giving it three stars because the production is huge.

God damn I hate Kanye so much. It's rare I detest a musician but here we go. Even putting aside his recent mental deterioration, despite this album being shite I was pleased to hear some samples of stuff I like, including King Crimson and Aphex. Then I decided to read up on the album. Robert Fripp from KC quit the music industry after this was released a he had no say in it. Richard offered to redo the AFX sample as it was so poorly copied but Kanyes team said they own it now, not him, so do one. How do I give negative stars?

I’m not gonna waste much time on this review. I got half way through and had to give in. The only decent parts are the samples taken from other songs. The rest of it is Kanye ruining a good thing. He’s an embarrassment to gay fish everywhere.

I'm not a fan of rap, but this is music with lyrics floating over it. Sonically, it's pretty nice. I can't really pay attention to the lyrics, which I know is the "best" part. My character flaw I guess. The misogynistic nonsense is there, however, so I can't really give it a great rating. Men stuck in adolescence don't do anything for me regardless of the genre.
I found myself dancing to a few songs with nice beats, but overall I really didn't like this one. Very strange and juvenile lyrics. A lot of just annoying music production stuff with sound effects and samples. Kanye isn't for me.

The weirdest and worst thing about the Kanye West situation is that there’s a decade’s worth of people who were later like, “Come to think of it, he did talk about Hitler a lot!” He did a whole letterman taping where he talked about Hitler a bunch, to an uneasy crowd. Then they just edited the interview and released it anyway! Good album, a 1 anyway.

I have never liked Kanye, this album did not change that. He is an obnoxious artist with obnoxious lyrics and an obnoxious fan base and this has always been the case. Every song follows the same format: he raps about how great he is and why everyone should bow down kiss his ass/balls. He is the epitome of a crybaby. None of these songs were enjoyable and he parrots the same shitty lyrical style in every song. Each generation that he is still idolized he’s dumbing down each generation. This is one of the only artists that I simply cannot separate the person from their music, mainly because he refuses to shut up about himself and how amazing he is, then is a fucking lunatic sociopath in real life. Could not wait for this selfsuckfest to be over. 1/10
