9/10. Maybe I am just feeling generous today, but I can't think of any good reason to dock this one points. I haven't been a big fan of a lot of the metal on this list, but this had a bluesier sound to it that I really enjoyed.
So good - this sound is not getting old for me. The coexistence of the aggressive yet precise guitar work alongside vulnerable, inward looking lyrics are a perfect match.
I enjoyed it far more then I expected too
Love this stuff.
SIIIIIII AAAAAAAA
Obra maestra total. Precursora de todo el rock que vendría después. Alucinando y potente. Genial.
I like FX gooood stuff
Four albums in and they’re as strong as their incredible debut. This one has a more introspective feeling; it doesn’t hammer you about the face quite as hard as the others, but there is no loss of power and gothic mood here. I came to Sabbath pretty late and I’m making up for lost time. These records were a revelation in the 70s and they’ve kept their hold with time. OZZY LIVES
Wtf Changes c'est une version originale de Black Sabbath la dingz. Et se dire que ça date de 1971 c'est une folie
For some reason Black Sabbath's ballads are not my thing. Changes never moves me and i've never really liked that song but the rest of the album is very great.
Not an expert on Black Sabbath but I quite enjoyed this. Not as heavy as I expected and some decent tunes.
I wasn't exactly the biggest fan of ozzy going into this. I got that paranoid album in high school, it was super cheap on itunes. It was cool, always felt a little played out especially these days, so I wasnt exactly stoked when this one came up. I listened to this album today maybe 5 or 6 times all the way through, and its kick ass. Really great riffs this feels like a classic. I like the lyrics and although ozzys voice will never be my favorite, i can appreciate how hard this albums goes. 4/5
Solid rock album with an absolute crazy back story.
a great combo of dark and beautiful
I hated this so much.
Loved this album. Never been a big Sabbath guy, but damn if this one didn’t make me a fan. Going to have to explore the rest of their discography now.
I had a Black Sabbath cd in high school and my parents sat me down to tell me that this is the type of music people on drugs listened to. Jokes on them, it just made me like Black Sabbath even more.
Coerente, piacevole da ascoltare specialmente tutto insieme.
not exactly my taste but i can hear why its kinda good. I mean listen to the tunes and the transitions alone on the first song: "Wheels of Confusion/ The Straightener" lowk fire. This was written at a time where i only listened to 1 song which was the first one
Prtty solid
This one is obviously not the best Black Sabbath album, even not top 3, still it sound nice and fresh and I like it
Oli vieraampaa Sabbathia, mutta tunnistettavaa kyllä!
Rokkaa ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Yllätti positiivisesti!
just my sort of thing, it doesn't have hits like paranoid but I have plenty of love for this album, good all the way through
Now this is dad rock I can get behind. A unique sound with grand and sweeping musicality. Ozzy at his best as well.
Solid album made by people playing real instruments. I liked it.
I was late to the game with this one, but the songs from it that I knew before I listened were always some of my favorite Sabbath cuts; "Tomorrow's Dream" with that monstrous opening riff, just such a belter. "Supernaut" of course is fantastic and I gotta say I'm a big fan of "Changes". Miss you, Ozzy.
BOM DEMAIS!
Very good
Such a unique and awesome sound! I'm sure it happens more than I realize, but as an uneducated music noob, this stands out. When a band can do something that is so different than every other band, with the same tools. I half expected to not really enjoy this, since it doesn't have the classic Ozzy songs that I've always thought about. But it definitely brought some amazing songs that I hadn't heard before.
Really good stuff. The heavier songs are killer, and the change-of-pace songs fit in quite well.
Solid Sabbath but I’m wondering if self titled has made way for this to be included. Hopefully not. 3.5/5
heard plenty of Ozzy work before, was always class but then again those were like his most popular songs. When listening to their early Black Sabbath work out of curiosity for that dark religious sound, didn't feel it was my thing. But I was quite surprised with the Vol4, the beautiful classic hard rock sound with the elements of band's signature dark vibe - it's not all that muffled and noisy as I'd imagined it would be. "Changes" which is legendary adds even more soul to the album and it's been quite an exiting ride. Not something I'd listen to everyday, but "Supernaut" and "Snowblind" is something I will return to! The instrumentals are great.
Riktigt bra album med riktig rock. Fett.
Ozzy rippin this fr
Wheels of Confusion, FX, Supernaut and Laguna Sunrise are my favs. A cosmic album including multiple feelings. Looove it!
Never listened to them previously and previously I thought their music is more hard-core. Turns out it is actually quite calm. I like it.
Solid Sabbath album. I hadn’t heard this one before. Heavy, sludgy, just what I want from them. 4/5
Sick nasty
Im going in biased with this album because i dont generally like metal but im already feeling surprised with Wheels of Confusion.
3.5/5
Incroyable Je dois admettre qu'avant je ne comprenant pas pourquoi black Sabbath Maintenant non seulement je comprends, mais en plus j'adore
c'était cool j'ai bien aimé
When it jams, it jams hard.
It’s kind of interesting hearing about Black Sabbath as “the first metal band” as a kid, and then listening to them and finding out modern stoner rock is closer to Black Sabbath than modern metal is. Nonetheless, this is a fun metal album. Some great riffs, interesting dynamic rhythms, and a lot of songs about drugs.
Surprises Ing how many songs are in the community? Lexicon that coverage change bang a couple to liked
Enjoyed que a bit
Album 199. Vol. 4 — Black Sabbath (1972) Badass album. I can't decide which "Changes" song is better: by Bowie or by Black Sabbath. Each one is perfect. Maybe "Changes" by 2Pac?🌟Who knows, but all three are in playlist. 4/5 Liked: — Changes — Snowblind — Under the Sun / Every Day Comes and Goes
Way groovier than I expected from a Sabbath album, a couple of tracks could have come from a Hendrix album. The highs are really high but it's a bit too muddled and lacking a cohesive sense of direction as an album. Must have been moved blowing when it came out though
as someone who normally thinks metal is bizarrely boring this was fun
Yeahh heel tof, laatste nummer denk ik mn fave? Echt smullon
solid album, would listen to again. I would definitely recommend this album to most of the people I know
So good. A continuation of their classic metal albums
Damn thought i was going to hate this... but Tomorrow's dream changed my mind!! That crescendo!! Wow. And Laguna Sunrise felt like a warm hug!! I am so pleasantly surprised. 7/10
Enjoyed this more than I expected to! Did not realize "Changes" was originally a Black Sabbath song. That, "Supernaut", "Snowblind", and "St. Vitus' Dance" were the standouts for me here
Rated it. Knew a few songs and liked a few new ones. Will def revisit
Not bad at all, especially considering it's 1972. And I've even added the song "Changes" to my playlist now
SHAROOOOOOON
Incredibly fun 4/5
This might be my first Sabbath album. I’m sorry I was so late to the party. I liked it. It’s weird how different “heavy metal” albums come across to me now.
This album is such a good example of why I’m doing this whole thing. I knew a few Black Sabbath songs, but never had reason to dive into their catalog. This was great, rock music is great, I’m glad I listened to this one.
In their Beatles-esque run in efficiency releasing masterpieces, Vol. 4 is their fourth album in three years, coming after what is probably regarded as the last truly iconic Sabbath album Master of Reality. Vol. 4 is still awesome and rightly beloved by slightly more in tune fans. The production here might be their best - Iommi's downtuned guitar with an even more evil sound than Master of Reality , dirtier yet with a strange (chorusy?) gloss to it which rings with every full 6 string chord - and Geezer's bass with all the percussiveness taken away, pure deep bass, which almost seems like an affront to his iconic sound but works beautifully here - just listen to those fat slides he employs on songs to add rhythm and bounce to Iommi's riffage. However, while my narrative of this album going into it - an album that shows serious cracks, repetition and a need for a big change - was not as stark as I thought, it is certainly still there. It's apt the album ends on basically a carbon copy of the N.I.B. instrumental, down to the same solo licks. It would be the last of what I call their 'E minor pentatonic albums' before Rick Wakeman would be enlisted for the proggy follow up album Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (which rules too - making 5 classic albums in a 4 year period.) Also to follow up on my discussion in on Off the Wall, what about albums that are just stupid? Black Sabbath is stupid. They are stupid. It's Ozzy Osbourne for god's sake. After singing a line about 'icicles in my brain" on a song called "Snowblind" Ozzy whispers "COCAINE" into your ear for good measure. And you heard Changes. "I feel unhappy, I feel so sad." Bravo. It is the same with Michael, however - while they lack literary prowess, the band that basically opened and almost immediately closed the book on the entire genre of Metal clearly had some other genius bestowed on them. Iommi and his guitar here is the real master and probably has had an equal if not greater effect on modern language as the great poets.
i had only heard their first two albums before today and was pleasantly surprised to find that this one (mostly) measures up to them. great guitar tone, excellent drumming. snowblind was definitely the highlight for me. was not expecting changes and laguna sunrise, which were both lovely. 3.5
wahey. a palate cleanser by every sense of the phrase. the thing about sabbath (and pre bob rock Metallica for that matter) is just how Heavy they managed to make standard adjacent tunings sound. none of that steve vai 7 string shit. none of that fishman strandberg shit. (to quote puritanical cracker nick) straiht fuckin Tone. also helps that everyone in the band's top 150 in their fields all time. changes is an all timer. crazy that on top of the everything they're ALSO synth guys. the entire A-side is all time stuff tbh. that little samba breakdown in supernaut?????? thank you 1000 Homo DJs. B-side's the slugier drugged out (probably why it starts with the cocaine song) twin. weaker but still dece. 3.8-4.3.
Not many of my favourites on here but despite that manages to be an incredibly composed all-rounder of a release. They're all on point here, this is an album with impact. Looking up info on the album it's just people like "you won't believe how much cocaine they were on".
I debated skipping this album. I have a bias against Black Sabbath based on who I think their audience is and certain expectations of what this would sound like. I'm glad I listened. This is much more musical and stylistically diverse than I was prepared for. This is a great album and well worth the time. More guitar heavy than I would prefer, but honestly an enjoyable surprise.
First time I’ve listened to this album. I wasn’t aware that it was so diverse with shorter songs of different sound landscapes. Still it’s the riff-based stoner rock that sticks out for me. It’s definetly good, though I don’t know many of the songs, so it takes me a little time to get into some of them. I liked the experience though, and I am looking forward to check out more from them later (both from other albums in the book and others. Favourites: Snowblind, Supernaut, Tomorrow’s Dream and Changes.
8/10
Some songs felt a little samey but that's because I'm still not super familiar with the genre I think. Some good songs esp Changes ofc
My least favorite black sabbath record of their first 6 masterpiece. It really doesnt say much because holly shit they were so good in their prime. "Master of really" is not on the book ??? RIP Ozzy, my life would have been much much different without you.
Overall: 8/10 This album starts off kind of weak for me and the style is all over the place....but god damn, Tony's riffs are just so killer and Bill's drumming is out of this world and Geezer holds it all down so smooth and Ozzy wails away like a banshee and I can't get over how much I love this fucking band. Fav Song: Supernaut
Solid album. Favorite song: Changes
duro
Ozzy ozzy ozzy, oi oi oi!
Don’t be Snowblind to this album.
4/5 https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/black-sabbath/black-sabbath-vol-4/ Not (yet) on the level of Paranoid for me, but man these guys knew how to write songs.
I think they might have had some drugs.
Wow - lots of Black Sabbath over the last few days. So I’m now a full on fan. In a very short time. From 0 to full fan in one week! This didn’t hit me like Paranoid- that was my introduction, but man, this rocks! And they’re amazing at the 180s! Opening with wheels of confusion going to tomorrow’s dream and then changes?!!? Wow! 4 stars. Really 4.5. Boolean rating: yes! Thank you for introducing me to Black Sabbath before I die!
This was a good album. The songs by themselves are good but together it almost tells a story. You can tell where the start and the end of the album is. I don’t know how to describe that.
Groovy, metally, gezellie
Proper heavy metal with a lot of Sabbath songs I didn't know but enjoyed. Defo one I'd listen through again. Think the first 4 BS albums can be played through entirely in one run, they're all soo good. Minus a point for some weakened flow, while Changes is a great song, I think it spoils the flow. Same story with Laguna Sunrise, would work better as an outro.
Came to this expecting the cliché: cocaine bloat, loss of discipline, a band disappearing up itself. That’s not what it is. It’s looser than the early records, yes, but the looseness reads as process rather than collapse. You can hear them thinking. The opening piece sprawls, but not aimlessly. It’s sectional in a very “we’re following this idea and seeing where it goes” way. That tone carries through the album: decisions are audible, sometimes provisional, often kept. It isn’t polished into inevitability. It feels closer to a room than a monument. The production is a factor. There’s a persistent low-mid density, a kind of baked-in murk. At times it is atmospheric, at others it tips into congestion. On certain tracks it genuinely feels like the top end has been shaved off, everything sits in the same band and merges. The interesting thing is that this occasionally works functionally. When the band collapses into a single mass, the vocal and lyric become the only clearly legible element. Whether that is intention or acceptance does not really matter. It behaves like a choice. Then you get a track that snaps everything back into focus. Proper groove, proper separation, bass and drums doing something elastic and alive rather than just underpinning the guitar. It has that “what if we push this bit harder?” energy, very similar to mid-60s McCartney’s habit of turning a supporting part into the engine of the track. It proves the band have not lost control. They are choosing when to exercise it. There is a recurring sense of play throughout, but not in a showy or ironic way. More like a Midlands habit of trying things without over-framing them. Odd detours, a folkish lilt here and there, an instrumental that just exists because someone liked the sound of it. Nothing is over-justified. The album tolerates things being a bit off if they have life. The “coke song” is striking for how unromantic it is. It does not glamorise or veil particularly. It just states. Change the lyric and the track still works perfectly well as a Sabbath piece, which tells you where the real weight sits. The acoustic interlude is well judged. It opens the space up without tipping into sentimentality. Crucially, it does not announce itself as “the beautiful bit”. It just appears, does its job, and moves on. That restraint keeps it from drifting into parody. The closing track is effectively a corrective. After all the wandering and texture, it reasserts the core identity in very blunt terms. Big riff, clear stance, no ambiguity. Lyrically it is a straightforward rejection of imposed belief, not argued, just stated. It feels less like ideology and more like someone deciding they are not going along with something that had been presented as normal. That thread, the sense of rejecting something ambient and inherited, runs underneath more than it initially appears. It does not come across as theatrical rebellion. It is flatter, more matter-of-fact than that. Overall, this is not their tightest or most consistent record, but it is one of their most revealing. You hear the band without much filtering: the instincts, the overreaches, the good calls, the questionable ones. It is uneven, but it is inhabited. That counts for a lot.
4 stars. Better then expected
Do i like this better than Paranoid? Yeah.
Was expecting something very different, this was super fun, I enjoyed it a lot
I really enjoyed this.
Some of favs…good early metal
The first Sabbath album I heard. My age meant I missed the previous albums. All my friends had the album under their arms at school?
A heavy metal album I was suspicious of but ended up liking a lot! I especially enjoyed “Wheels of Confusion” and “Changes.”
Another classic rock album I actually really enjoyed even though it’s not a genre I typically gravitate towards, but this rocks
"i'm going through changes" é uma frase que vai me acompanhar por um bom tempo!! primeira vez escutando um álbum completo do black sabbath com atenção e gostei mais do que eu achava que iria gostar. 4/5
Amazing! Didn’t expect there to be such range
Not the Sabbath lp I was expecting. The first song at 8 mins nearly broke me as I'm not one for guitar and drum solos. However the lp was great from then on in. Ozzy was excellent accompanied by crunching riffs. The lighter songs broke the lp up nicely with light and shade.
Nice one
Écoute durant travail donc pas optimal pour évaluer. Ambiance à la première écoute: festival, beau temps, bières, vélo en fin de journée d’été, potes. Album quali varié. J’aime la variation offerte par « changes », pépite pour moi de l’album.
pretty fire
Not a perfect album by any means. But when it hits, it really goes for it. Supernaut is amazing, crunching, sludgy guitar over Ozzy at his best. And Changes is a goddamn gorgeous beautiful song. Some of the tracks on here aren't to the same standard though, and feel like filler, and the tracklisting feels a little off. But time we'll spent.
original black metal. riffs.
4/5 stars - 10:43 am EST
Notwithstanding the more recent cover of Changes by Charles Bradley, or perhaps, in part, because of it, one finds it hard to believe this is actually an original Black Sabbath song. It's too pretty, too tender, too heartbreakingly relatable. One suspects they covered something created by a black artist dating from at least a decade prior. This is not the only surprise of this album. It is remarkably sequenced in its composition. Even the odd FX track, which is little more than some echoing reverbed notes (presumably produced by a synthesizer), has its place as a kind of sonic palate cleanser between Changes and the powerful driving hard rock anthem that is Supernaut. Similarly, we have the Zeppelin-esque interlude Laguna Sunrise as a break before two more powerful tracks, St. Vitus' Dance and Under the Sun, that close out the album. This opus has its place alongside their much more famous album, Paranoid. In some respects, it represents an evolution of the band that exceeds it.
solid 8/10, I get why they were you popular and still are today! The paved the way for metal and other sub-genres for rock, and they're totally iconic. What surprised me about the album was that there were a few songs that seemed to have no electric guitar, which the name "black Sabbath" suggests they're totally hardcore. So, A little bit of a shock, but I honestly enjoyed the variety. I think I'd listen again, the guitar is mad catchy.
I didn’t realize changes wasn’t Black Sabbath that’s cool Apart from that it’s just classic Black Sabbath like with first track Favorites: changes, wheels of confusion Probably actually 3.5
A Sabbath album I can get behind. Much more mature than there early stuff, the album where they seemed to balance heaviness, melody and grove best. The track FX is just filler and pointless but otherwise it’s consistent with some great tracks. 4.2
A real confidence to Sabbath on this record. A band at the total sum of their powers. 4.2/5.
I listened to this a couple of times and it definitely needs to be played a little louder on proper speakers to be enjoyable. Changes was the only track I really knew before. Lays the groundwork for all of the more modern sludge and groove rock like Down and The Sword. Good riffs as expected, more prog adjacent than other songs I know by them.
Really great!
I like them but this album isn’t their best
Good but weird album, I like it but it’s not as heavy as the previous albums. I don’t see how this album was as much as an influence on doom metal as the previous but I did find the proggy influence very inspired. I will say one of the things I don’t like about this album is how quiet the mix is, it’s very soft and is probably why it didn’t hit as hard as it could. Still a good album but prefer the earlier ones
Wheels of Confusion/ The Straightener - 3.5/5 Tomorrow's Dream - 4/5 Changes - 5/5 FX - 2/5 Supernaut - 4/5 Snowblind - 3.5/5 Laguna Sunrise - 3.5/5 St. Vitus Dance - 3/5 Under the Sun/ Every Day Comes and Goes - 4.5/5
Muy guapo, inesperadamente
Very good
Me gustó. No soy tanto del palo del hard rock pero tiene flasheaditas lindas.
I want it louder!!!!! Man Ozzy Osbourne really was a great singer. I really like this the guitar and hi hats are punchy and real I wish it would louder again. Some of the more somber moments I couldn’t care for but this a great record to just jam out to and pump some iron. St Vitus and snowblind are highlights of just the creativity and imagination. Snowblind lyrics are just so interesting how do you come up with that.
Simply iconic, and for many reasons
Really enjoyed the range and scope of this. Big fan of the first Black Sabbath record, but I think this might have become my new favourite. Favourites were 'Changes' and 'FX'.
Super good
Amazing album, almost a 5 star for sure
mmm
Black Sabbath is really so much more than what I’d originally thought of them. Ozzy was a powerhouse singer, and Tommy Iommi is a great guitarist (and producer!). I just want to highlight this passage from the Apple Music blurb about “Vol. 4”: “The ballad “Changes,” meanwhile, is a unique collaboration among the four members: Self-taught pianist Iommi tickled the ivories; singer Ozzy Osbourne wrote the vocal melody; and bassist Geezer Butler wrote the lyrics, which were based on drummer Bill Ward’s crumbling marriage.” Cracks me up that Bill Ward’s part in the collaboration is having a marital struggles.
I liked this much more than I thought I would. Four stars!
This album slaps. The opening riff on Supernaut is amazing.
8/10 – Very Good
Qué álbum. 1972 eh. Una aplanadora. Y unas letras que ya iban mostrando en la que andaba Ozzy. Emblema de todo un género. Hitero, ruidoso, accesible también. 8/10
How fun to now know the origin of Changes. Laguna Sunrise was an unexpected but beautiful treat amongst it all
There is good balance between heavy and soft sounds, definitely an album to listen in the car. I love how it starts with the longest song Wheels of Confussion, because this song perfectly shows whole album's together prog character which i personally love.
Changes... Who knew they could write a genuinely nice song
Wasn’t really a fan. However this is first time hearing Vol. 4 and it is a strong rock LP.
awesome
I was slightly reluctant to give this 4 stars because I know Sabbath has other albums on this list which are a lot stronger than this. Still, this is an enjoyable listen, with some great tracks and Ozzy’s vocals are fantastic. In the end, I just couldn’t bring myself to give the late, great Ozzy a meagre 3 stars.
It is a top of technical abilities of the band. Filled up with great guitar riffs and amazing songs, this record sets new standard for the metal genre of its time. Album is diluted with beautiful acoustic theme called Laguna Sunrise. Long live the Black Sabbath!
Not my favourite black sabbath album but its still so good. I think the production is kinda rough but I think I like that more
My rating 4.0 Good album.
I think I am really starting to like Black Sabbath. I had only heard Paranoid before, which is great, and assumed the rest was repetitive/too hard for my taste. I need to reassess that take. This album ROCKS!
Don't really like Changes which is the most well known track here, but there's enough monolithic riffing to make up for it
Coke addled but still brilliant
Bon rock pesant. Moins énergique que Black Sabbath ou Paranoid, mais morceaux intéressants et batterie percutante.
Black Sabbath at their best
First Black Sabbath album on this generator, and it sounds like they've expanded their heavy metal sound. Songs like "Changes" and the "FX" interlude add a lot of depth to this record's ominous vibe. Personally these two come off as existential dread. And then BAM comes Supernaut, with that guitar riff! Thank you generator for leaving this on my lap today!! Vol. 4 makes an awesome addition to my heavy metal (and musical) journey.
The first track here showcases just how much the band had evolved in the 3 short years between this and their first record. It's a complex medley that demonstrates a prog excursion with a few different riff ideas. Tomorrow's Dream gets back to the proto-sludge metal they pioneered and hits you across the face with another sweet riff or three. Then you're on to the uncharacteristically naive ballad Changes. Followed by a short, weird, noise interlude (FX) before the chugging banger Supernaut. Snowblind opens up side two with a paean to cocaine with typical Sabbath riffs. Cornucopia gets super heavy. The interesting thing about this album is that they make more use of major chords even though they still manage to maintain that dark mystical sinister sound on several tracks - maybe they ran out of ways to combine minor chords. Laguna Sunrise is a short instrumental guitar song, almost elegiac in a major key. St. Vitus Dance spends most of it's running time sounding like a 60s hippie dance song, only they interweave it with the inevitable metal riff. As drugged up as they were when they put this together, it doesn't seem to have affected their talent for putting together memorable mammoth-heavy riffs. They sound more comfortable composing and, more importantly, expanding their sound with trying different things. I think Sabbath developed a reputation for being just another silly metal band, particularly due to Ozzy's bizarre and unpredictable behavior, but they had serious talent and musicality and influenced countless bands in their wake. This record sounds pretty fresh even today - while not all of it works perfectly, there is still more to like than not, particularly with all of the amazing guitar riffs they came up with.
This is a good album. I think a lot of it is not much better than fine, but some of it is completely sublime and I have to give it props for that. It's a much more diverse artwork than the reputation of black sabbath would have you believe. It's full blown soft rock for a few minutes here and there. I'm not as high on it as a lot of people seem to be, but it's enjoyable 3.5/5
Literally every kid in high school had this on repeat in their car. 8-Tracks ruled the day. I was probably in 9th grade when this hit everywhere in Canada in 1974. Although the record had been out for more than a year the coolness factor had fully set in by 1974. This was everywhere and endless joints were smoked to this record. I remember cruising my small town with Wheels of Confusion fully cranked up in a smoke filled car with my buddies looking for chicks to hang with. Friday and Saturday nights with chicks, booze, guns, drugs and Black Fucking Sabbath. Magical really. This album was the soundtrack for the chase not the conquest. Nobody was soundtracking their sex lives with Tomorrows Dream but up until the heat was turned up to 10, Vol. 4 was the ignition switch to good times. Perhaps it was a confluence of a whole variety of factors that placed this album at the center of a good time, but there it was central to every kids high school experience. I’m going through Changes, Ozzy cried and for a moment I understood that losing a girlfriend, that first love, was not the end but a transition before the full FX of the hurt hit me. But it passed quickly as Supernaut signaled a new start and I’m going to reach out and touch the sky. Every kid from a small outlying northern town understood that Sabbath was the universal source of life and that with Sabbath anything was possible. Vol. 4 was about hope with a guitar tone that screamed heavy metal. And despite the thousands of times I’ve heard this record in the 50 or so years that have past, I still am taken back to those high school years - no matter where the needle drops. Sure I have favorites but over the years different songs hit differently. Snowblind never really stood out. My eyes are blind but I can see approaches The Who for kinda corny lyrics but somehow it all made sense to me at that time. Sure this is a drug fueled album and there is a bit of an unevenness particularly on tracks like Cornucopia and Laguna Sunrise which is their Led Zeppelin moment. Definitely a WTF? You give me the pastoral acoustic guitar track and a fucking instrumental at that just before the end of the record. Definitely out of place. But those are minor nits. St Vitus Dance is a return to form and kind of a throwback to Paranoid. Definitely a Led Zeppelin transition in the middle of that track. I know that there are those who will say this is a perfect record, but in fairness it’s not. Still better than most records of the period. 4/5
The roots of heavy metal from a band in their prime. This is not my favorite Black Sabbath album, but it is good.
Hadn't heard any of these before. Still pretty good, doesn't hit like their 2nd. Some nice fuzzy riffs, bass drums. Lyrics are not good. 3.5 rounded up Heard before? No Owned: No 53/225 (23%) Will I get: Probably not
When I hear someone say ‘Black Sabbath’, having never really listened to any of their music before, I imagined hard rock and metal with long-haired frontmen biting the heads off bats. That’s what I expected. But what I got was something totally different. While a lot of songs certainly ‘rocked’, some others left room for some calm introspection. This led to a well-balanced album that embraced both sides of what the band is capable of - and they are certainly talented! Some songs I did not particularly enjoy, but almost all had elements that I appreciated, if not loved. One particular disappointment was the album’s name - surely you can give an album of this quality a better name? 8/10 RIP Ozzy
Black Sabbath goes hard.
Pretty good, Changes especially is a fantastic song.
This isn't the big Sabbath album. There is no Iron Man or Paranoid on it. But it's still a solid collection of hard rock songs. Really good listen the whole way through.
This is certainly not my first time listening to this album, though it's not my most listened-to Black Sabbath album, nor my favorite. It is, of course, very very good. "Supernaut" is a highlight, and there's a ton of guitar mastery present from top to bottom. Not a single bad track here.
Courtney: none of the best songs but still cool Craig: his voice in his prime is really awesome
Iommi the riff goat
Guitar tone is crazy and ozzys voice is spectacular. First song was a standout so far. Changes… piano? Eminem song! Snowblind- cocaine song. Icicles in my brain Second half of album not as good as first half but still decent 4.2
Very nice mix of songs. The cohesive sound is phenomenal. 8/10
Muy buenos solos de guitarra es muy pegadizo
Piel de gallina con la apertura de la primera canción. Es una propuesta artística de lo que vamos a escuchar a continuación.
8.5/10 - This is a great album as are all of the first 5 (or 6) albums by Sabbath are. This album does have the worst song by Sabbath so it can’t be a 5 but a strong 4 is still a really good album.
A really great album with a weird inclusion of Changes. I don't like their version of it, but the rest of the album is strong. 8/10
Cool
I like it! I think this was the last Black Sabbath album I went out and bought.
A fun departure from their heavier, earlier catalog. A great album!
yup
Exceptionally solid rock album. Pulls you in right from the opening track.
It's Sabbath. It's great metal. But it's not the best Sabbath. I would not tell anyone interested in listening to Black Sabbath to start here.
Very good
Surprised this is the Black Sabbath album that made this list. Still rocks though. Wow a ballad... Daaamn Supernaut comes in hot. Snowblind is a banger too.
Great album showing the true range Sabbath are capable of, beautiful string work with the acoustic guitar on some tracks and changes what a classic and unexpected turn for them to do a piano ballad. FX is the only thing that makes this a 4 instead of a 5, but it's also a true peek behind the curtain of the coked up madness which created this album heh
Black Sabbath's fourth album released in a 3-year span definitely takes the style they had developed in a very different direction. While their other albums were certainly experimental for their time, Vol. 4 remains experimental to this day. I don't even really know how to describe it in the context of their other work; while their previous albums stay relatively focused in their heavy psychedelic sound, Vol. 4 takes influence from quite a few different sounds. Obviously Changes is the major outlier, being the subject of debate from Sabbath fans and haters alike, but the whole album in general feels just a bit different as far as direction goes. Do I prefer this sound over something like Paranoid? Not particularly, but when it works it's hard to deny its effectiveness. Supernaut and Snowblind are perfect examples, encapsulating the slightly spacier psychedelia while maintaining the heaviness that defined Sabbath. While their are definitely weaker songs on the album that do not stand on their own nearly as well, tracks like Laguna Sunrise contribute to the unique vibe on the overall album. They don't overstay their welcome, and add a bit of flavor an variety to the album even if their singular presence is lackluster. Vol. 4 is definitely not my favorite Black Sabbath record, but its place in the catalogue is certainly memorable and has aged about as well as the rest of their material from this era.
It's Black Sabbath.
#36/1001 🇬🇧 I'm sitting here listening and wondering why the teenage metalhead me never got into Sabbath. I know them by ear but have never listened to their albums in full. Could be because they didnt seem that cool due to the cartoon character that Ozzy had become. I didn't think that i liked his vocals but they do sit well here, offering a slightly unhinged paranoia on top of some magnificent guitar work and a solid rhythm section. Best Tracks: Supernaut, Snowblind, Laguna Sunrise.
tomorrow's dream esta chida changes buenisima en la de under the sun se escuchan riffs similares al de electric funeral y NIB
The only thing this album confirms is my suspicion that Sabbath Ozzy is better than Solo Ozzy. And this is the one without the hits. A Highly impressive school on how to make a kick ass Metal album. Supernaut all the way til the end just slaps. Legends. Changes was the only song that I found to be less than stellar. Still a good song though. Can't wait for the others! 4
What an amazing band Black Sabbath was... This album is great. Love the variation, the chemistry is incredible, and the music has so much... bite... I'm getting this days much deeper into their stuff and enjoying every minute. Track 1 one is a long evolving piece. If you are not impressed by Ozzys vocals and presence, just listen to this one. His incredible. The riffs here are so fucking cool. Elite guitars from Tony. 2 continues the great energy with a classic Sabbath sounds and fir bluesy vocals from Ozzy. One again he shines here. Love the arpegios in the b part. Changes is a singular track in rock music. A special one, a true masterpiece. You should check your heart if ozzy's voice doesn't effect you in the choruses. Man, it's so good. After a questionable interlude (maybe to let us reset after the last track) no. 5 has a riff for the ages, and a sublime performance from the entire band. Track six is very good. Once again, amazing vocals. Adore Ozzy on this album. 7 is still very good but maybe the least exiting on the album for me. Still very very good. Laguna Sunrise is surprising and delightful. A small and lovely acoustic number. 8 feels like an early Sabbath track. Great. Rock n roll. Under the sun continues with the early motive with a massive satanic riff. The perfect closer for this album. What a thing . It's not perfect. But very close, actually. I think I'll regret it if I won't give it a 5 But a 4.7 it is
Love Black Sabbath, was very happy to see them pop up. I'm gooooooing through chaaanggeeeeessssss
One of many outstanding albums in the initial Sabbath lineup's run. Favorite track: Changes
Klassikko on klassikko, vaikken Ozzyn Sabbathista oo koskaan oikein piitannut.
Great album. Each song sounded different, all within the same genre. And "Changes," of course, is a ballad-y banger, trapped between a 4 and a 5. Why can't we give half stars?
I love Supernaut
Very good, but not S-Tier like "In Rainbows" from yesterday. The best song on the album is the very first one, which is always a bit of a bummer.
Excellent riffs, less dark and broody than earlier Sabs stuff. Things going a bit prog in places, not sure about 'Changes' but people like it. Opening track is utterly brilliant.
Great album with some classic songs.
This does slap, although lacking in certified bangers
very good! couple of bangers that i really fucked with, a couple i didn’t but thats okay. was pleasantly surprised with the variety idk why i thought id be all heavy but i especially liked changes and FX
Its weird hearing piano on a Black Sabbath album. And a lot of acoustic guitars. I see why this album is on the list. It shows the growth of Sabbath as a band. I still think they're at their best on Master of Reality or Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, but this was a great reminder of the range this band was capable of. Also refreshing that not every song is 6 minutes long. I don't mind that so much with Sabbath, but hearing all these nice, condensed 3 minute songs was a nice change. Its like a whole album of Paranoids, kind of.
Slightly better than "Master Of Reality" with a clearer sound. Still not one I find myself going back to often, but when I do, I find I enjoy it.
This rocks! Opening Track is great. Amazing rock drumming, Ozzy's voice was one of a kind. They are certainly one of the most influential heavy rock/ metal bands of all time, but listening to it now, it just feels like solid rock. Really holds up, I'll listen to this over most other guitar music coming out of the 70's Not my favorite Sabbath Album, but still a solid 4 stars. Almost 5 stars, I think I'm secretly wanting to leave room for Paranoid. This one has a few more filler songs than Paranoid. Aside, I'm a little surprised that there are no solo Ozzy albums on the list. Feels like Blizzard of Ozz could have squeezed on.
I just love the groove
RIP Ozzy. Great album. Not a metal person, but sabbath just hits a spot very few artists of any genre can. Truly always a great listen. The writing on this record is definitely a more mature version of Sabbath. Highly recommend the 2021 remaster over the 2014 remaster. Even then, the mastering and production are slightly flatter with less low end than some of their previous works. Overall, this is an essential album that everyone should listen to. I do think Paranoid is superior in sonic quality and songs. So I am giving Sabbath Volume 4 a 4/5.
Once again, Black Sabbath rules. They are hard rock but with such a tight groove, and then throw in some beautiful bits too. Ozzy sounds great.
Pretty good, enjoyable. Changes was really nice.
Classic listen!
As far as Black Sabbath goes, I enjoyed this. It wasn't life changing, but I really liked Changes and the overall vibe of the album.
Not their best but changes is very good. 7/10
favorites: changes, supernaut, snowblind
A lot of people don’t know about this album, but it’s a very soulful less energetic sabbath. Changes is an all timer, Ozzie’s pain on that track is chefs kiss
8/10
Black Sabbath invented Metal and are/were the genre’s greatest artistic force. Personally, I don’t think Vol. 4 is their best album, but it’s one of their best – the fourth of their classic six album run that bludgeoned the genre into existence. Dropping the needle on Vol. 4 is to step into the world of a band who were taking control of their own destiny, co-producing for the first time and letting in a little light and shade. That’s not to say Vol. 4 isn’t damnably heavy, it is. “Wheels Of Confusion” is a lively opener, though a trifle murky in its presentation, which sets the aural tone. “Supernaut” features Tony Iommi in classic slash n burn form and “Snowblind” is all about the band’s drug of choice - the ebb and flow mirroring the drug’s effect – with some great soloing from Iommi again. And then there’s “FX” which is just that, a couple minutes of guitar effects. “Changes” is a weepy ballad of all things, and “Laguna Sunrise”, an instrumental piece that’d fit seamlessly on one of those chill-out compilation albums with a dove on the cover. So, taken as a whole, it’s a strange, fucked up, messy record, but still quite brilliant in its own weird way. Ozzy and the band are on fine form throughout, and obviously in the mood to go exploring. It was probably the cocaine. 9/10
Who knew BS were so musical???
R.i.p to a kind
Заправо супер албум, мало ме подсећа на Зепелине
I enjoyed the album, was nice to hear some of the classic tracks in context of the album. I've never been a big Sabbath fan, but respect for what they were trying to do.
ts is ok
not that bad i expected it to be too much rock but it was fine and i will probably listen to it again
Ozzy and the rest of Black Sabbath were very influential during the 70’s. Their loud and who cares mentality was different and people liked it. You can tell they had too much fun making this album. It has the psychedelic vibe that most 70’s rock had. The drugs, the partying, the we don’t care. It all blends together to be another big hit for ozzy and Black Sabbath.
Taken back by how psychedelic it seemed at first, then by how moody and heavy it got to be. The dimension created through vocal echo/reverb/whatever made it feel huge at times. Everyone on this is superlative at one time or another. God I miss Ozzy. Not what I’m normally looking for from Sabbath when I go to pull a record or song, but I get why it’s on here. Incredible that “Changes” only happened because they found a piano and Iommi sat down and learned to play it. So much of the production is a culmination of luck and immense talent…and drugs.
Woo, Black Sabbath! I know some of their other records, of course, but not this one for some reason. It was silly of me to listen to this first thing in the morning, since what this record needs is late night and a party. But it's a good listen, especially when they get into the longer instrumental bits. Turn it up! (Oh wait no don't, the neighbors are probably still asleep.) The final track, "Under the Sun," was my favorite; it had an interesting repeating guitar bit at the beginning, and some very nice stuff happening in the rhythm section. It felt more restrained than the rest of it, which made it more powerful for me. But I drop a star for "Changes," which - like we all love and miss you, Ozzy, but did we need to hear you singing a sad love song over drippy strings and piano? I mean maybe, but it didn't work for me. Biggest regret: that "FX" didn't go on a little longer (they thought of it as a joke piece, but I kinda liked it). 4/5 stars
Really surprised me! Never listened to BS on my own accord. Knew a song from the album.
I guess I'm a Black Sabbath fan. This is the second album by them that I have listened to. The other being Paranoid, which I gave 5 stars. I definitely preferred Paranoid, but I still think this album sneaks in as a 4/5.
Franchement très très sympa à écouter
Très bon
Favourite Songs: Tomorrow's Dream Supernaut Snowblind
Black Sabbath was so influential in shaping the sound of all things metal and rock. On this album the bluesy elements are still firmly present, combining with the downtuning to form a sound now prevalent in acid and stoner rock. The opening track and Supernaut arry the definite highlights while changes is (depending on your mood) a welcome change of pace or an unnecessary detour.
I liked this album, black sabbath is dope Fav Track: Wheels of Confusion/The Straightner Least Fav Track: FX
Liked this album way more than I expected
Not as good as paranoid, but still excellent
One of the Hard Rock masterpieces. Heavy guitar and drums! Also, acoustic guitar on Laguna Sunrise was a present surprise. personal best: Wheel of Confusion/The Straightener, Supernaut,Laguna Sunrise
Good album, grows on you
Slayyyy loved the instrumental only songs
not what i expected but i liked it! esp the last song.
Yeah fire what’s not to like
Pretty good
Before I listened to this album, I thought I wasn't a Sabbath fan. But now I've listened to this album, and I get it. I mean, I've listened to Paranoid because of this project, but I like Vol. 4 so much more. It's deep, complex, varied, and just really solid rock.
Definitely changed my perspective of black Sabbath, great album, very thoroughly enjoyed
7.6
holy shit... black Sabbath made changes?!
Wow! Never fought that I would like this type of geyre
Not exactly my thing, but the guitar work and vocals are crisp and convulsive.
Bom!
First things first, rest in peace to the prince of darkness. I love Black Sabbath especially the first 4 albums, I believe that’s when they did their best work. During these you literally get to indulge in four of the best heavy metal musicians. My personal favourite being Tony Iommi, I’ve always been a fan of how he plays guitar. It was unique back then and it’s still withholds its sounds today, a true professional. The tension Black Sabbath can build in a track is next level. I’ve listened to this album back to back 4 times in a row, and it shows no sign of getting stale. The bands musical chemistry is definitely captured throughout Vol 4. Ozzys voice was absolutely on point on this record. To point out the obvious, he sounds incredible on Changes. A song that I initially heard first when Eminem sampled it. It was nice to hear this side of Ozzy, something he definitely grew towards in his solo career. You’ll notice I have a lot of songs in my favourite tracks today. What an important band and what a brilliant album, thoroughly enjoyed it. If I could give half stars this would definitely have had a 4.5. Unfortunately I’m saving the 5’s for absolutely perfect albums, although this is close it’s not quite there. Favourite tracks are: ‘Wheels of Confusion’, ‘Under the Sun’, ‘Snowblind’, ‘Supernaut’, and obviously ‘Changes’.
Was pleasantly surprised with how much i liked this album. Would consider listening again!
Not the typical Black Sabbath I expected to hear. Had to listen 3 times, but really enjoyed it
Perhaps lacks the coherence of their very best but still has all the power and verve.
For Sabbath, I've only ever listened to their first two albums. I'm a bigger fan of the first, to be quite honest. Changes is a banger. I love the Charles Bradley cover a lot, but Ozzie can really make you feel stuff. Overall, pretty great album. Doesn't quite clear the first two albums for me, but it now has me interested in Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.
Maybe the most polarizing BS record, so was surprised when this popped up. It's probably their most diverse record, veering from riff heavy rocking to sludge metal to piano ballad to acoustic instrumental and back again to heavy riffage and sludge. It's not their best record but even at the height of their LA coke binge excess, they still produced magic
3.8
not my usually my cup of tea but wow changes. just wow what a song. and Laguna sunrise, just a pretty ass song. reminds me of sumeru regional music from genshin impact pleasantly surprised by this album
This album is not just high quality heavy metal- it has surprising range and some songs are quite beautiful.
Loved "Changes" the most + "Supernaut", great instrumentals on most all songs What is "FX" doin
why do i lowkey fucks with ittt
Might only be rating this so high because I’m shocked I liked it so much. Good album.
Very seventies. Loved 'Tomorrow's Dream', 'Supernaut', 'Cornucopia', 'St. Vitus Dance', and 'Under the Sun'. Also appreciate the fact that Laguna Sunrise does sound like sunrise at a lagoon.
8 / 10
4,5/5, polu wraio me arketa kala vocals kai polu wraia kithara. Agaphmeno apo ton disko to Snowblind.
Typical black Sabbath with a basket full of bangers.
i thought black sabbath was from like the 90s but i was surprised they were from the 70s loved the intro to the first song (lots of guitar super cool) it seems ahead of its time trying to remember who covered the changes song on this album cause it sounds so familiar LONGGGG songs THIS IS OZZY OSBOURNE??
Gosto de Black Sabbath e gosto desse disco. Acho legal o quão dinâmicas canções como Wheels of Confusion ou Under The Sun são. 4.5/5
Especially the first song of this album was very good
Another classic from the Boys from Birmingham. Proto-Sludge riffs along with the classics Changes and Snowblind. Not a huge fan of Laguna Sunrise, but every other song is incredible
I enjoyed this
More chill and less metal than had expected, but enjoyed. Would listen to more
Overall the album was different than I expected. Most of the Sabbath songs that get played on the radio or in movies/TV are well-known heavy songs. This album had a cool balance between the heavier songs and the softer, more instrumental tracks.
Really enjoyed the B Side
I’ve always felt that the thing most lost among the craziness that would become Ozzy, which I’m not complaining about, is the musical brilliance that was early Sabbath. Unarguably the weakest of their first four albums (again, Ozzy), this is still significant as the other bookend for a sound that I’m sure historians will find roots for but I think was unprecedented for the era (and Sabbath certainly did it better and with more consistency). If you like hard rock, the first four albums are must haves for any collection.
atmospheric and weird
A solid album from the greatest metal band of all time. Grooves, drones, croons, walls of sound, piano ballads... This album has it all. ¨Supernaut¨ is my favorite Sabbath song, such a jam!
Mi piace Black SabbAT
a rock classic, i love this album sm THE GUITAR SOLOSSSSS DAYUMMM
Nicht begeistert musikalisch gut jedoch nichts für mich
Best Song: Snowblind ofc Worst Song: Tommorows Dream / FX but I like both. Probably my favourite Sabbath album following Paranoid. Great vocal performance by Ozzy Osbourne and guitar by Lommi. I love how heavy it is while being perhaps more progressive and experimental than earlier albums. Snowblind is the centrepiece for me, and my favourite by Black Sabbath, blending great guitar riffs, vocal performance and lyricism into an exhilarating track. Changes is a beautiful song and displays the band's range as previously shown in Orchid and Solidarity in MOR. Of course it has also spawned covers such as Charles Bradleys which takes the lyricism to a new height. One criticism might be that although it thematically fits in the album, it isn't quite cohesive with how heavy tracks surrounding it are. Laguna Sunrise archives much the same praise and criticism. With regard to popular criticism, I don't think FX is a terrible filler, but I do think it highlights that the album could be made more cohesive. Perhaps FX should not be listed between Laguna Sunrise and Changes. The critique of the self production is unwarranted -Ozzys vocals are perhaps slightly muted/muffled but I think it works within the album, although I could conceive that a different approach would make some songs more soulful.
7/10 Best: Snowblind / Laguna Sunrise Worst: Supernaut I think this album is fantastic! I was a bit unsure about how much I would like it but I actually ended up playing it through twice. Opening up so heavily and then to the poignant ballad, Changes, really shows the range of the band. I loved the chord progression on the tracks and the use of piano and synth, it’s hard to remember this came out in ‘72. I haven’t seen Snowblind mentioned in other critiques very much, but for me, it was the best song on the album, the lyrical depth and the transition from the main riff to the bridge is amazing. Controversially, I don’t particularly enjoy Supernaut, bar the opening, sorry. I think it works amazingly on this album, it’s just not for me personally. I don’t really understand the hate FX gets, it’s really not that deep, a cool interlude between some very heavy songs.
Dragged a bit in the middle for me, but otherwise I really liked this! This kind of metal I think I can get behind for the most part.
This is a damn good album. I clearly haven't listened to enough of Sabbath's catalogue. Changes has got to be one of the most " I owe you an apology I wasn't really familiar with your game" tracks of all time.
Standards: Rating is just how much I enjoyed listening to it. This is separate from the quality of the actual song and its lyrics and instrumentation. Wheels of Confusion/The Straightener: Lyrically the opposite of who I am but I appreciate a message of disillusionment with adulthood and how the life your promised as a kid more often than not doesn't come to fruition leading to a confusion that morphs into nihilism. Crazy guitar work at the end. 8/10 Tomorrow's Dream: I think the glimmer of hope in an otherwise bleak song lyrically really is complimented by the instruments, things suck but there's always something to work towards to some degree. 7.5/10 Changes: One of the few songs I knew already, but only the chorus. Unexpected change in tone! Lots of regret in this song (seemingly cheating?) and I think the chorus/title effects this idea of growing apart from someone you love (changing) and also growing from mistakes after reflecting on the consequences of your past self and choices such as betraying someone you love because of that shift (changing). 6/10 FX: Mmmmm an interlude. (unfair to rate, needed for album progression) Supernaut: I like the references to the first song here, seems like a good journey from nihilism to really embracing the absurd reality that is life! Going beyond expectation and living for yourself even if you don't get that promised reality. 9/10 Snowblind: Oh the sweet simplicity of some cocaine. “My eyes are blind, but I can see” verse fucks, love how it’s sang and the solo it goes into. What the hell is that instrument at the end??? 9/10 Cornucopia: A dark turn, almost like he’s trying to share the wisdom he found in Supernaut but almost circled back to the nihilism, almost gives cult leader 6/10 Laguna Sunrise: A lovely instrumental 7/10 St. Vitus Dance: A snazzy tune, 9/10 Under the Sun: RIP Ozzy, you very much lived your life on your own terms 9.5/10
Great guitar solos and great songs in the first half of the album.
I like how melodic the metal music is here. Also having some sections of slower music is nice to make it not all sound similar.
Heavy. Geezer Butler heavy. This is why I started this project. To listen to albums that I have never listened to by bands that I know some songs but haven't done a deeper dive. Black Sabbath has a lot of albums (with and without Ozzy). I know several of their more popular well known songs probably all from Paranoid. This surprisingly had 2 instrumental tracks... sounding nothing like Black Sabbath. "Changes" sounds like an Ozzy solo song. I listened to this album several times today and enjoyed it... more listens will possibly help me figure out the lyrics.
Classic.
hard
the guitar work was insane but in all honesty I didn't get far.
#794. There's really no denying Sabbath's first four albums. Not that you'd ever be in a spot where you'd need to, but if you were, you probably couldn't anyway. 4/5: fantastic
It was better than I expected, though some parts had me thinking I’d stumbled onto the set of This is Spinal Tap. The piano ballad and the chill instrumental were unexpected. I gave it a few plays through today and liked it better each time. Has me interested to hear some of their other stuff that other reviewers have mentioned.
great album
Это не мой любимый жанр музыки, но послушать было приятно. Идеальный баланс между жесткостью и музыкальностью. Лучшая песня: Snowblind
Always thought this one was a bit of an outlier in the early albums, as its not as raw and primal as the first 3, but also not as polished as sabbath bloody sabbath, but I for sure think its the worst of the first 5 albums, but its still got great moments on it. Always forget the songs without heavy guitars on them, like changes and FX, but I do think changes is kinda trash, but FX is really interesting. Laguna Sunrise is brilliant as well it feels like sailing through a calm ocean at night or something. Obviously I don't really need to say why Black Sabbath are so good, totally revolutionary guitar tones and riff playing, as well as singing Ozzy Osbourne always totally did his own thing, and I like that he doesn't have to shriek like like Robert Plant to make the vocals feel intense. Yeah there's loads of great songs, but still not as good as stuff they did before (and after). Also this is probably revolutionary in terms of guitar heaviness, as some of these songs feel crazy for this early on. Favourite songs: wheels of confusion/the straightener, FX supernaut, snowblind, cornucopia, Languna sunrise, St. Vitus dance, under the sun/every day comes (this one feels like Black Sabbath the song but with updated heaviness). Overall around 8/10
it was very good, intense.
I have never been a fan of metal, but I've enjoyed every album from Black Sabbath that I've heard so far (That would be two albums, lol). A metal classic here. Although, why are there a piano rock song (Changes), an experimental piece (FX) and a baroque pop instrumental (Laguna Sunrise) on here? (Not that they're bad, just out of place. I was taken by surprise)
changes was so so so good
Ok i wasn't sure I liked metal but I think I do but I definitely need to listen to more. Also I knew the big mouth theme song was a cover but I had no idea it was originally a black sabbath song like what thats so cray. Also i need to look into this album more cause does every song qualify as metal??
RIP ozzy. Just not my favorite. Changes is a good one. The rest made me feel guilty for not headbanging whilst listening.
This was much more enjoyable than I thought it would be!
Despite owning Paranoid, the 2nd album, in highschool, I don't think I've every listened to this one. Wow. May inspire be to go and listen to more of their catalogue.
Норм музон 7.5/10
Black Sabbath has been the only repeat so far except for the Beatles and I can see why. The guitar on this is fucking phenomenal. Wheels of confusion and every day comes and goes were my favorites.
What coke does to a mf.
(84/100)
So, it appears that I am a fan of Sabbath. This is my third album and I have enjoyed each! Absolutely rocks and this one showed some great range I feel, Changes demonstrating that particularly of course.
Seminal work by Black Sabbath.
Someone's been in my room and taken my beers away from my room. I think that's exactly how I felt listening to this. Super early gritty black sabbath, absolutely gorgeous and I love how the guitars sound, especially in Under the Sun, just some great riffs.
Great album, not my favorite black sabbath album tho
Well Ozzy certainly can pull off a ballad and does so on Changes (one of my favorites of his). Supernaut rules and there is a lot of great Sabbath on this album, but it’s not my favorite Black Sabbath by a long shot. Still rules though!
I’ve never given Black Sabbath a chance. I think it’s because of the bat stuff. But look at me now! I really enjoyed this. I didn't even mind that the first song was longer than 7 minutes...
Definitely not my favourite Sabbath album, but surprisingly enjoyable. Changes still rules, but I forgot how pretty Laguna Sunrise is.
Very good but it's a little too old for me to enjoy to the fullest
This album was a lot of fun. I only recognized Changes but it was a pleasure to listen from front to back. I am ashamed to say my Black Sabbath knowledge did not begin to grow until after the death of the late Ozzy Ozbourne. But with this record and Paranoid under my belt I would consider myself a fan
changes
