I love this album. I think it's a much more honest Madonna, post her 80s heyday and pre her 'gone a bit mad' era. The production is really good as well. Not all songs are brilliant but overall I do like it a lot

I could almost bump this up to a 4, certainly a side of Madonna I was not familar with. Ray of Light is a great pop track. Faves for me were Little Star, and Mer Girl.
-A nice album, but not really in my style -some pretty cool stuff happening in lots of the instrumentals, particularly in "Ray Of Light" and "Sky Fits Heaven." Some stuff sounded industrial/Nine Inch Nails like.
This is not a bad record, some fine moments! But compared to the rest of this list I feel I have to give a 2.

William Orbit's electronica influence is all over this as Madonna sought to re-invent herself. Spiritual and dancey, there are some good tracks on here
Trip hop Madonna. Who knew? Not bad, not great!
In school, I was told that if you want to know what a Shakespeare sonnet was about, all you need to do is to read the last two lines. The songs in this album are the embodiment of that sentiment. Once you listen to the first couple minutes, you've listened to the entire song. I think that the good in this album is how complex the compositions are and her voice, but they're heavily outweighed by how the songs drag on and on. Favorite track: Nothing Really Matters
This is kind of a weird album. I've never heard an album from Madonna in its entirety, but there are a lot of songs that just seem off. This album seems to come from an odd time in Madonna's career, and there are other albums from this time period that I would rather listen to. Highlight: 5.

2.7 - decent listen, but not something I’d go back to. Didn’t enjoy the electronic vibe as much as some of her earlier work, but probably like Frozen the most of all the tracks.
Had it in my mind that I loved this era of Madonna, listening to the album though there's no massive stand out tunes and it's a real mixed bag. Frozen stands out but this is really just a start for her re-invention.
Just look how quickly rich and gauzy becomes "deep" and "meaningful", the shorthand for which is--sigh--an Indian song. I note William Orbit is credited on that. It appears not even the best artists were immune to 90s ambient wank.

Not what I expected from Madonna. Not that I was super familiar with her breadth of work, though. This was a chill techno-pop album. It had an interesting blend of influences and I enjoyed the listen. Nothing really super remarkable though that would make me want to listen again though.

As much as I've enjoyed the "hits" of Madonna, never did I think I'd enjoy a whole album. TIL.

Not what I expected from a Madonna album! It had its naff moments, but a few corkers and just generally a good time. I have been singing Ray of light non-stop for the last few days, which might just eek this one to a 4.
I am a Madonna fan. This album is one of the ones in my normal circulation of 10or 20 albums that I listen to on a daily basis and it is GOOD.
Blown away by this one tbh. I like a lot of Madonna's big hits but found the couple of albums of hers that I'd listened to a bit samey and inconsistent This was a massive departure from anything I expected, the opening track set the scene so perfectly- sounded like Enya singing over a Trent Reznor instrumental. Then there's some exploration with trip-hop and big club bangers, with some fantastic sounding synths and a really wide range of instrumentation and grooves. It tailed off slightly for me towards the end, and did start to feel its length, but the mysterious and slinky closing track was another highlight. All in all a great album, very different to what I was expecting, and definitely something I'll revisit

Used to like it better in the past. Still nice to listen some songs, but overall it´s a bit "flat".
Still remember that after a sequence of rather mediocre albums -say anything after Like a Prayer and this albums- and a string of singles that were good but not great (except This Used to Be My Playground but that was with Shep Pettibone again) ..suddenly ..Frozen was released and after that: the Ray Of Light single and then Substitute of Love and the Power of Goodbye.. in short: the best 4 pop singles of the 90s, seemingly out of nowhere. So bought the album but felt a bit disappointed as it was made in the same way as in the 80s: great singles (*****) some (very) decent albums tracks (***/****) and some filler (*/**). Think True Blue or Like A Prayer. Still feel the same after listening to it again today. The 4 singles and the William Orbit contributions are as fantastic as ever, just like a couple of other tracks, but overall it falls short to be of 5-star, just like True Blue and Like A Prayer (to compare, for me, her first album and Like A Virgin are both 5-star).
Well-produced techno/dance pop album from Madonna. It has some good songs, but for me, this sounds a bit too subdued overall and at times somewhat uninspired.
A couple of good tracks. Certainly not something I would listed to on a regular basis. Plenty of forgettable ones too.

It's OK. There's a couple of really good tracks but I did get a bit bored as it went on.
Without the vocals it would sound like a cyberpunk computer game soundtrack, and I don't think the vocals take anything away from that.
Superior pop. Difficult to listen objectively to Madonna without being coloured by her ruthless pursuit of fame at any cost and deliberate religious and sexual provocation. She's either an empowering force for femininity or a spoilt brat, depending on your point of view. No denying that the pop is above average, but doubtless she has the means to obtain the best writers/producers. It just isn't authentic. I don't believe she cares about music at all, it's just a means to an end - fame. Look at me everyone, aren't I great?

A good pop album
A definitive Madonna album. Madonna has constantly reinvented herself with each new album. And through her career until Confessions, she successfully took modern technology and made it her own unmatched by anyone else. Madonna's work has always been tied to synths and electronica, but you can hear the evolution of music in her albums. In Ray of Light, she modifies her Erotica dance and Bedtime Stories R&B strategies with the rising techno scene, which was never that big until Madonna slapped her label onto it. This is an electro-pop masterpiece. It is incredibly well produced, with innovative techno effects that make tracks suitable for dancing, studying, or sitting back and having a drink. Her vocals are mostly influenced while her last two albums, soft and sexy, reflecting the speed and subject matter of the lyrics. Just hear how perfectly entwined her vocals are with the techno sounds in "Skin", I can't believe how perfectly they blend together. There are plenty of perfect tracks on this album. "Drowned World" is such a surreal and sad reflection of her relationship with fame. "Nothing Really Matters" is the friendliest for newcomers and old fans. "Ray of Light" is a perfect dance track, although I admit it sticks out from the other tracks. "Frozen" is like listening to a movie, with dramatic build ups, tense effects, orchestral strings, and spacious yet gloomy vocals. And most of the non-singles are suitable for any dance mix. My only two complaints are that it's super long, and the last few tracks feel like bonus tracks, belonging to Bedtime Stories. I get that dance tracks should be long, 5 minutes, but softer tracks like "Little Star" could be cut a little or just entirely. It's hard for me to decide which Madonna album is my favorite. But I can definitely say this is the one with the least flaws, and combined with its influence and outstanding production, it's one of the best pop albums out there.
91. Ray of Light - Madonna 13 tracks. I don't mind a bit of Madonna, in fact I quite like some of her early stuff, but this isn't a good album. It's not awful, but it's not far off. I bet even Madge doesn't like this album. 2/5

Mature dance music. Very listenable, albeit a little bit background/dinner party style. Coincidentally to the song "Frozen" the album feels quite glacial: sophisticated, but lacking in singing emotion which fits the music, but not the emotional lyrics. No True Blue, or Like a Prayer, but one of Madonna's best. A high 3 out of 5.

i have always secretly loved the title track. don't tell anyone. i remember thinking when this album came out that it was cool seeing her move with the times - she'd been an 80s pop icon, then shifted in the early 90s, and then here she was again in the late 90s working in all that new-fangled techno stuff. it's also always funny to me how The Olds remember her from the early days & see how she pushed boundaries & conversations about women and their collective place/role in culture...but The Youngs tend to see her as kind of a washed-up tart. i really don't love her music, but it's very much worth understanding the degree to which she changed the conversation back in the day.
At first, I was not really into it. But then the album picked up for me after a few tracks. Skin & Sky Fits Heaven are beautiful. Pleasantly surprised, as this is my first ever listen to a whole Madonna album.

Madonna reinvents herself again! I'm used to the OG pop Madonna but enjoyed this alternative electronica vibe. I would have personally chosen one of her earlier albums, but reading the Wiki it seems this album was groundbreaking at the time (I'm too young to remember!) As others have said, it was a tad too long, but who am I to argue with the Queen of Pop? I liked 'Frozen' and the title track the most.

Somebody needs to take her to A home and leave her. She looks like she should be called ray too these days. Have a vague memory of fingering a Thai girl to this song at some point. Really helped with the rhythm and flow and the facial she gave me afterwards was glorious
which musical incarnation of Madge do we have today? Ah, its the edgy 90s dance music influenced madge. this is probably the best version of her. if you were to give all of the albums on this list a rank from 1 to 1001 this would probably scrape into the top 400. weird underhand compliment but i think i'm trying to say is i enjoyed about 50% of this album. i'm really not looking forward to the Ali G era Madge.
Once such a daring and courageous beast, this effort seems rather lazy and insipid. Just throwing some EDM into the mix, because, well why not? Madonna reminds me of a wounded sealion gasping for air as it watches its pups be fucked to death by the predatory ghost of Sir David Attenborough.
Fuck sake. Madonna. An ageing cockwomble struggling for a sense of relevance in the strange modern world. Stumbling around like a drunk auntie at a wedding, Madonna seems to be both uninterested and entirely up for it all in one. I felt nothing listening to this.
It's a William Orbit album innit, and a good William Orbit album at that. It just happens to have Madonna singing over the top. It probably would have been better without Madonna singing on it but then it probably wouldn't have made this list. So there you go.
Awe, man. Do I really have to? This just sounds like producers have finally mastered ProTools and want to make everything sound like an AI robot wrote it. Whereas MIDI allowed 80s/90s bands to perfect polyrhythms and live layering, this era of 00s records just made everything lifeless and bland. Madonna has great records from the MIDI-era. I'm sure this is considered a "return to form" in terms of commercial sales, but it has none of her early charm. And, it came out at a time where I never ever ever ever could have given it a chance. I had officially checked out on main stream pop (have since returned) and considered it an example of what good music was not. Can I give this single star to Janis Joplin's Pearl?
I never understood Madonna's popularity. Don't get me wrong. Can she sing? Yes. Has she written, recorded, and produced several hit songs. Sure thing. But she's pretty average in my opinion - and this album is evidence of that. These songs sound like a hundred other songs that came out around this time - there's nothing really innovative or different about it. Every song is 6 minutes long and they could have been 3. In fact, the whole album could have been one 3-minute song. They all sound the exact same. It's like the soundtrack for a Disney movie that was way to sad and weird to make it to theaters. And, even though I'm not a fan of Madonna, this album cannot be her best effort. Not sure why it's on the list.

These albums, so far into an artist’s career, really judge longevity and evolution. Madonna definitely has it. However, the run time and basic songwriting with dull 90s aesthetic make it less appealing than her earlier work.

Ray of Light is a pop hit, though these sounds are such a time capsule of late 90s electronica. Nothing Really Matters is the first track that I think the whole sound grooves for me. To Have and Not to Hold paints in the same sonic space as the soundtrack from Nier: Automata

This album is without a doubt the singular high watermark for 90s American pop, and potentially Madonna's entire career. Between her other albums, I struggle to pick a favorite between Ray of Light, Madonna and Like a Prayer.
Ya know not bad
This is sitting somewhere between 3.5 and 4 stars for me. I found it enjoyable, and much more enjoyable and surprising than what my perception of a Madonna album could be. But I lack the true context to really get why this is a great Madonna album. Why this one? Why not the others? I’m also kind of “over” the whole “white lady discovers ethnic music and thinks she can do it better” thing
Not the typical poppy Madonna. I prefer this Madonna.
I never really liked Madonna’s music, but this one does sound more mature. Still, the album never transcends the level I’d refer to as decent background music.

1 or 2 bangers from an old banger
This actually bangs in places. Makes me want to be in an early 2000s action film. Could have been trimmed down a bit, but otherwise loved it.
I'm not a fan and this album didn't change too much my impression of Madonna's work. It's nice, but (except for one or another classical song not included in this specific album) it's just mainstream pop music and does not mean anything at all.

more ravey than I was expecting
When I started listening to this I thought it was going to be excellent, but became more and more disenfranchised as I worked my way through it. A handful of really great tracks, and plenty of tracks which were similar in sound but much weaker overall. I feel that getting rid of a few of the tracks, and shortening the length of some of the others, would have resulted in a much stronger album. I did really like some of the production and instrumentation (William Orbit's influence), but even that gets a bit monotonous as it's all pretty similar sounding. I think it's fair to say I was bored shitless by the time I got to the end. (2.3)
“Ray of Light” by Madonna (1998) Would it be shocking to say that techno-pop seems artificial? It sounds cool, but where’s the soul? But first let’s deal with the message of this novel collection of songs that beg to be taken seriously. The artist behind this album comes across like the girl in eighth grade who was pretty, but was dismissed by everyone because she was conceited. With lyrics that are often inane (“There's no greater power than the power of good-bye”) and internally contradictory (“Let your judgments go, that’s how our future should be”) she reveals an intensity that lacks humility. The multiple themes are uniformly self absorbed and completely uncompelling. How else does one treat a complaint such as “I had so many lovers who settled for the thrill of basking in my spotlight”? How does a mere mortal relate to such a sadness? Or how about this one: “the students rape their teachers . . . while the churches burn their preachers”? As a burned preacher, I take serious umbrage with that one. I think the message can all be summed up in this truly brilliant line: “Why do all the things I say sound like the stupid things I've said before?” Thank you. We hear on this album some genuinely attractive melodies, delivered with confidence and colored with elaborate if overly artificial electronic pop arrangements. So far so somewhat good. But they are laid down with a stunted creativity that sounds as though her paid collaborators are reluctant to offend her. The result is gimmicky. Whatever power there is in her pleasant enough voice is frequently smothered by dance floor whiz-bang sounds. She has nice control in the lower part of her range (less so upstairs), but it’s often supplanted by the too-heavy effects. This, along with some irritatingly idiosyncratic diphthongs (e.g., “er” sounds like “ewer” and “ai” sounds like “aeeyai”), results in her demotion to the second tier among female vocalists. The bass lines frequently have too much gain and sustain, muddying the sound and at times even clouding the chord changes. It would be more danceable if it were crisper. The exaggerated techno environment puts one the mood for cardio, not dance. Twenty years after its release feel like fifty. The lyrics and melody of “Little Star” are very good—a simple lullaby, beautiful even. Why did it have to be spiced up with heavy traffic techno gizmos? After all, she’s the one who complains (in “Mer Girl”) about “my daughter that never sleeps”. No wonder. Turn down the Moog, Mommy. There are nice eastern influences in some of the compositions and arrangements, but it would have more authentically produced with actual eastern instruments and musicians. Maybe her cultural appropriation budget was limited. I think she either misspelled or mispronounced Vunde gurunam caranaravinde Sandarsita-svatma-sukhavabodhe Nihsreyase jangalikayamane. Change my mind. 2/5
It's funny, I've never been a big Madonna fan (although I don't hate her either) and I've also never been big into electronic music, but Madonna + electronic music seems to work. Fun fact - I grew up very close to where Madonna grew up in Michigan, although she is a few years older than me and I didn't know her. 3 stars.

I like this album, particularly Drowned World / Substitute for Love and Swim. I also like the upbeat dance music. Not very consistent throughout.
I have never been a Madonna fan and this album didn’t change that. Critics cite this as the greatest pop album ever? I don’t get it. It was over an hour of sameness with very little to break it up. I’m being generous to give it a 2.
I only have listened to Madonna's energetic, carefree and fun hits before, so an ambient, hypnotic, and soothing sound is not what I expected at all to hear on "Ray of Light". Having said that, the record is extremely well produced, though most tracks overstay their welcome by a bit over a minute, and Madonna's vocal performance comes across as lazy at times. 3/5.

Low vibration tonal decency with some rocky guitar licks. Dancy popy too. A bit of yawner in the grand scheme of Madonna. Might be her worst album.

I’m transported back to being driven to violin lessons as a kid when this was all over the adult contemporary station we would listen to on the way. Mixing electronica/techno and pop, it isn’t a bad sound overall. I really like Madge's voice on this. But these songs are really repetitive; not in that they sound the same, but each song just keeps pounding down the same musical motif again and again. It’s kind of draining. Favourite track: “Little Star”

Alo, nisam ovo očekivao. Trip-hop/dancepop kind of thing. Nije loš album, ali mi iskreno nije bolji od Like a Prayer što sam prije nekoliko tjedana slušao za ovaj challenge. Zanimljiv nadasve album, pogotovo me iznenadilo, nije ono što sam očekivao od albuma kao tipa Like a Prayer.

Привлекают внимание только различные экспериментальные вставки, в один момент как будто даже атональный хор каких-то волынок появился, что я вполне бы рассчитывал бы увидеть на альбоме позднего Аукцыона, а не главной поп-певицы девяностых. Драмы довольно часто прикольные сбивки дают, ну и всё такое. За поиск разнообразия вполне могу семёру въебать, жалко ко второй части альбома интересных элементов становится меньше. как-то так, хз
Худшее из того, что слышал в рамках списка. И эта отвратительность... она не в раздражительности. Она в пустоте. А точнее в пустоте, позиционирующей себя как полноту. Да, я могу прослушать новый для себя по звучанию арт- альбом и также ощутить поначалу пустоту и неприятие. Но мне хватит свести 2 и 2, чтобы прийти к выводу, что я что-то не понимаю. Тут же ничего не понятного вроде бы и нет. Пустые аранжировки, пустые вокальные партии, пустые тексты. Музыка, которую будто слушаешь в примерочной торгового центра. Звуковые обои. Да, может и компетентнее оценивать альбом как вещь-в-себе, в отрыве от реалии. Тогда да, могу попытаться найти приятные мотивы, припевы, которые мог бы напевать... Но зачем? Думаю, избавившись от подросткового роцкодрочерства я ныне везде что-то хорошее могу найти. Frozen вот вполне приятная. И что теперь, единицы никому не ставить? Задаюсь вопросом, откуда пошла эта тема с сильными независимыми женщинами, с серьёзным лицом напевающих какую-то попсовую унылую хуйню. ВИА ГРА с их бриллиантами, цветками и ножами, Бейонсе с её сингл лэди. Где начало. У меня познания невелики, но почему-то всегда на роль источника претендовала Мадонна. Для меня именно подобный кал и испоганил попс. При короле Майкле то такой хуйни вроде не было. Если только на маргинальном положении. Не, пускай этот альбом будет в 1001 альбоме, что нужно послушать. Но не чтобы насладиться, а чтобы ужаснуться от массового безвкусия. Чтобы услышать звук безликого капитализма, вырождающегося общества потребления.

Really enjoyed the 'fuzzy' sound of the album, it sounded more like a U2 album at times.
Ambitious both musically and lyrically and it works.
Great grooves overshadowed by sometimes cringe lyrics.

Not my favourite iteration of Madonna, a bit too trippy hippy for me! This was Kabalah Madonna and it shows. Best song The Power of Goodbye and Frozen.
A really good, nostalgic electro-pop album. Singles like Frozen immediately bring me back to my childhood.

Levyn alussa fiilis oli ihan okei, mutta mitä pidemmälle kuunteli, sitä enemmän alkoi tylsistyttää. Ray of Light -biisin rumpupoljento toi mieleen Rednexin! :D Ylipitkän levyn biisit tuntuivat toistavan itseään ja sisältökin taisi olla jotain jooga- ja itsetutkiskelukuraa. Ei jatkoon, vaikka eihän Madonna nyt kovin huonostikaan laulanut.

Surprisingly good
I forgot just how beautiful madonnas voice is. I grew up on OG Madonna and when this album came out, it was “weird” but so Madonna :) I didn’t listen to it much because I was so nostalgic for her old stuff. I realize now just how ahead of our time this sound was. It fits way better into today’s music. <>.

That was.... something. Not really digging it. Not a great vocal performance overall and the music sounds like what you hear in a dark, smokey club with during a drug trip scene in a movie that has an epilepsy warning due to all the flashing lights and quick camera movements. That is a generalization, since there were moments that broke away from that, but that’s the overall vibe I got Favorite tracks: “Frozen”
The nostalgia kick was nice for a while, but I cannot stand pop albums that are more than 46 minutes long
Can’t say I knew about Madonna’s Trip Hop/IDM phase.
A stunning pop record with incredible diversity. Definitely electronic-based, but I’d argue brings a fair amount of alternative rock to the table as well. Of the Madonna albums I've listened to, this is definitely my fave. Love that William Orbit production, and I'm a sucker for electronica with world music blended in. Fave track - it always used to be "Frozen", but this time around the title track really jumped out at me. It's quite a tune! Got me pretty energised!

Very nostalgic hearing the song "Ray of Light" again, brought me back. Overall kind of a snoozer.

Ahhhh, her “electronica” album. Mostly filler formula: overproduce a generic track in one of the many electronic sub genres, and add Madonna vocals. Some parts eye rollingly bad, some are quite good. Frozen is a legit great track.

Don't really have a lot to say about this. I'm not even sure how I feel about it really. I don't love it but it does make me vaguely nostalgic for the era it was produced in. Not that I was listening to this at that time.
Surprised I knew a couple on here. Very plagued by the late 90s, but I do remember my mom singing "Ray of Light" in the car, which is hilarious now. I mean, it's alright but nothing great.
A little like OG Lana Del Rey. Cool electronica style.

Hyvä levy, positiivinen levy ja näin. Vähän nuo intialaiset kikkailut välissä pisti harmittamaan, mutta kokonaisuutena positiivinen, hyvä levy. Madonnasta oli kuva ehkä hieman enemmän joko kasaridiscon tai myöhemmin hieman modernimman discomusan esittäjänä, mutta tämä oli aika rauhallisen miellyttävää musiikkia. Nelosen arvoista menoa!

Madonna. Kind of a middling Madonna album. It was okay. Ray of Light was pretty good. Everything else was kinda whatever? It's Madonna, what else do you want?
Fine pop, it did seem a bit...overindulgent.
A whole lot of investment for a maximum of 15 minutes pay-off. You can certainly die before listening to this one, and in all honesty, at 1 hour 6 mins in length, there is a good chance that you might.
The last good Madonna album according to my wife
The album where Madonna remade herself and brought EDM to the mainstream. Solid stuff. Best track: The Power of Good-Bye
Part white lady spiritual, part trip hop. Way too long. I enjoyed it at first but an hour is way too much of this. Favorite tracks: "Candy Perfume Girl", "Skin"
I was pleasantly surprised by this, as downtempo stuff usually isn't my bag. And it is long, though the beauty of the production can't be overstated (Actually, maybe it can when the cheesy strings come into Little Star.) Madonna's voice doesn't have much zing to it here, but if it did the whole album would have to be retuned to it. She takes you through the hour of music, and the melodies are pretty if not very hooked, and the calming effect of the music is undeniable. I tend to prefer my trip-hop with more of the mentioned zing, but Madonna is absolutely my bag.
