Reviews (page 10 of 11)

motherfucker. generator. what. dumb assholes fail to realize meg white adds angularity to jack white's black keys² impulses. i have no need for blues revival when i can just. listen to the blues. idk. he's always had late stage Eminem levels of aura to me. which makes anytime he tries to do hard rock stuff silly. unlike a qotsa. who're dorks. but cool. or john mayer. who's an actual asshole. im shakin'. that's the statement. an addendum: this nigga is a CORNBALL. track 3 cool. track 5-6. tracks 9-12. why'd he put the good songs (ballady stuff. he can write a ballad i can't lie.) at the end he's just maybe. Maybe. fought his way out of a 2. first review is so right though. fuck it. 2.5-3.8

It’s ok. I like the mix, and a couple tracks. Nothing mind blowing to me and not something I’m likely to return to but wouldn’t be mad if I heard it randomly somewhere.

Incredibly not for me. Jack White has good songs, but there's only like one on this album in my opinion.

Highlights: Missing Pieces, Love Interruption, Weep Themselves to Sleep, Take Me with You When You Go

arranca bien pero cuando se pone muy bluesero zzzz

pas horrible, pas dingue, pas sur de réécouter, pas de bitches etc...

Not for me.

Nothing I really liked too much, decent sound just didn’t catch myself getting into any of the songs

Not terrible but will not be coming back to listen to his voice anytime soon.

Not my vibe but I liked trash tongue talker

Nice, but it's not something I heard in my daily life.

First 4 songs were so meh that I almost gave up on this album until Blunderbuss started playing, it sounds gorgeous. Then the piano in hypocritical kiss is just chef’s kiss. It’s beautiful. Then there’s the most random turn in I’m Shakin with those backing vocals, almost like it doesn’t belong in this album? And then there’s Hip Poor Boy that is just so 💫😻☀️that I’m just questioning it all? I guess I should go to sleep? Just go atp. On and On and On beginning is just majestic I was so surprised because, again, I started losing faith. But it’s so different from the beginning of the album like mid-way he just decided to switch the vibe. I guess the medical sound in take me with you when you go could be cute but not in this setting, I guess I’m confused by where he’s trying to go all the time, his vibe switches totally.

Aikas mitäänsanomatonts

Myeh, no thanks

Like this one a good bit The Sorta rap is fun and I’m a sucker for simple instrumentals + vocals Kinda fell into some generic rock slop later on but it’s solid

2 stars. I've tried to see what everyone else seems to see in Jack White, and I just don't get it.

- The first song was legitimately an 8/10 for me, I was so hyped, and then the album was just more rock. - It does feel like this album was a classic rock album made specifically for me though. - I really appreciate some of the sounds they use though, theres some baller elp and theres a really cool guitar solo in Weep Themselves to Sleep. Great digital modifications, really cool recording, awesome tech pull in classic rock. - This is just very classic rock though, and while its great sometimes, a whole album is a little much. - My favorite song was the first one, Missing Pieces. That was a great time. It was all downhill from there. - I am so over this. 4.5/10.

unfortunately, this album did not hit for me. I was excited by the description and the genre, but it just didn't grab me. liked the instrumentals, that's about it.

Everything I thought a Jack White album would be and nothing different. 16 saltines was ok but it just feels derivative and a bit shit

Vraiment pas mon style. Pas très original.

unmemorable

After listening to this album I'm pretty sure that Meg White was the talented one in White Stripes.

I don't like Jack White. Sue me.

At the time, it was exciting to see Jack back in action after some collaborative efforts. This record is just ok, though. Especially on the back half, this is not him at his best.

I am realizing I just don’t like Jack White’s voice. 5/5 for the instrumentals though.

There's obviously some good things going on here, but I had to turn it off before the end

Not my type of music. Just overall wasn't a fan. I don't think I would've enjoyed this album even if I listened to it when it came out. Was just alright for me. Meh

Could have been worse but didnt enjoyed listening very much

Sixteen Saltines Love Interruption I'm Shakin'

Listening session: february 21st, while getting ready in the morning and while getting ready for bed Listened to before: no Thoughts: I’ve never really listened to the White Stripes and this solo album is not my type of music either Favourite track: Blunderbuss

2.5 He’s a great guitarist and he does well at the heavy rock blues but the rest is just a bit bland and boring, which is a shame

Probably my least favorite album so far, no songs that I really enjoyed

Ehhhh just sounds like all the other Jack White

Sounds so Jack White-y it’s like he’s recording his own Weird Al parodies of himself.

This was a struggle, mainly due to the vocals on a number of tracks, but also due to my limited interest in what manifested as a fairly generic album compositionally across appreciable portions. I nearly turned the album off after track two as the vocals were that bad, but fortunately they were more palatable from there on in. Frustratingly, there were some cool guitar exploits dispersed here and there, however these never felt capitalised on to any meaningful degree to truly elevate the songs. Even as a non-fan of The White Stripes or Jack White, surely there were better albums to choose from within their respective canons.

Нормально

Jack White – Blunderbuss On Day 48, Blunderbuss was a bit of a letdown. While the blues-rock vibes and the general production were all good, the album felt passable overall. It didn't have the same level of impact or consistent momentum that I've found in other recent discoveries. I can respect the instruments and the effort, but there just wasn't enough there to make it a memorable body of work for me.

not my style

Some catchy riffs for sure but nothing memorable, found the style boring after a few songs.

Not a huge fan of this one tbh Couple of alright songs, but not compelling enough for me to add them to my library

Well rounded, alternative and cool 😎- just wouldn’t choose to listen to it lol

The sounds on this album are a bit too repetitive. I enjoyed it at the start cause it was fun and upbeat but then got bored of it half way through. The black keys kinda vibe? Idk maybe i would have liked this better back in like 2019

Best Song: Trash Tongus Talker. I can't say this is much better or worse than White Stripe albums, there seems litle difference in the sound. Like WS, jack whites vocals permeate the instrumention, (the instrumentation being the best part of his music). His mix of nasally shouting and falsetto baby whining is just so grating, especially as the album runs on. The albums gets better in its latter half as Jack is more subdued.

nothing special, great songs

The best you can say for this record is that it’s the closest solo Jack White album to the White Stripes, chronologically. It was mid in 2012 and it is mid in 2026. I actually have some of the first singles (one with the “Love is Blindness” B-side) from this record on 7 in vinyl, and they are pretty strong. At this point in his career there was still a good amount of mystery surrounding Jack White and this album could have been an indication of where his persona would go, but he spiraled out into arena dad-rock in a way that’s off putting compared to the more modest vibe of this album. It’s still not very good. I low key can’t believe THIS is my 15th album on the generator and I still haven’t been served a single rap album.

I really like Jack White's music. This isn't my favorite album of his. There are some good tunes, but none good enough to overcome the stinkers as far as I'm concerned. The second half really falls off the beam. I get wanting to distance himself from the White Stripes sound, but it's what he does best.

O álbum mais fraco do White que já ouvi.

hmmmmm

Extremely mediocre

His first solo album after the White Stripes. I've never heard it before today, there's nothing particularly special about it, but some good musicianship hiding in there somewhere

it was meh

I am once again stumped as to what this album could be. The musician name, album title and cover aren't indicative of anything to me. If I'm to take a shot in the dark, I'm expecting a singer/songwriter rock album with a mild electronic influence (that last bit is just me spitballing around the year of release) Wow, blues. Never in a million years would I have made that guess. This is from the frontman of The White Stripes, too. I thought the name rang a bell, but in all fairness that could go both ways - it is a pretty generic name. It's nice hearing this guy separated from the horrific garage rock sound of the Stripes, but it still isn't enough for me. The songwriting and lyricism is generally pretty uninspired, and White's vocals aren't quite to my liking. Still, I can admit that this is competent. White is a talented vocalist regardless of my quibbles and the album held my attention for far longer than the average inductee on this list. The piano numbers were generally pretty alright, too Book time. An agregate of all the different music projects he's been in. A prolific producer. An unfettered showcase of White's creative talent. Personal lyrics. Wikipedia says that this album apes many different styles. Critics praised the ambitious songwriting - I respectfully disagree. Charted very well, especially for an album released at the beginning of the streaming age. Well-received by critics. I'd snub this under normal music-listening standards, though I tragically do not know of a thousandty-eighty-nine really good albums that aren't already on this list, so I guess I can let this one slide. I cosign this inclusion.

Pas très fan de folk Album’s best : Love Interruption

I didn’t think it was bad, despite my 2 star review. Just not my vibe. It was a super cohesive album though.

Interesting. In places sounds like Zeppelin. Just not real good.

White boy album that I unfortunately could not get into

not my cuppa tea

Listenable but didn't do anything for me.

Can't see myself every returning to this.

weird ahh lyrics

Very unexceptional. It’s ok but really not worthy of inclusion in a list of greatest albums.

- Jack White is too often just a pastiche and this album is an excellent example of this criticism. -

Maybe not an album I would listen to by myself but still quite good.

kinda forgettable. didn’t listen to the whole thing - i didn’t really enjoy it.

Form over substance

not bad

Couple of half-baked song ideas somewhat pointlessly dressed up with too many florid, try-hard musical arrangements and general productional shenanigans. The guitar riff in Sixteen Saltines would make a great Hives song and the clarinet in Love Interruption is lovely but I have no idea why this ended up on a 1001 Albums You Need To Hear Before You Die list.

Han er utvivlsomt musikalsk, men jeg synes ikke, der var andet bemærkelsesværdigt end Love Interrupted.

Not a fan

it did sort of get better as the album went on but it was still mostly unimpressive

Fine. I finished it didn’t I?

Never liked him or white stripes

Blues Rock. "The record deals far more with death; death and the romance of death. That's why I have a vulture on my shoulder on the cover. I’m making friends with the vulture. He’s not waiting for me to die to pick at me, we’re friends, and we’re in this together." For those who don't know, Jack White used to be part of The White Stripes until he went solo. Blunderbuss showcases what someone can really do with talent, vision, and proven ability. Jack White almost entirely wrote the album himself and self-produced and self-recorded: he wrote the lyrics for and composed every song except two. It's not my cup of tea and not my favorite genre. I don't even have the best trained ear, but I can hear the excellence and originality. Considering how much popular music is written by all the same people, this is a standout album. For comparison, the industry pics/plants of Madison Beer, Tate Mcrae, Sabrina Carpenter, The Kid LAROI, etc.... have whole teams of ghost writers, lyricists, to produce a popular sound. E.g., Tate McRae's latest album "So Close to What" had 26 dedicated staff who helped her put it together. She is listed as a write on each song, but let's not kid ourselves. She is owned by her label. Point made.

Okay the Jack White lionization tour skipped my house. Very creative and interesting guitar. Keyboards great addition to the songs. But shut up.

My expectations were so low that I was pleasantly surprised at first - then gradually bored. Some great backing singers though and nice instruments. Better with Meg on drums though. And the reference to Bo Diddley half way through just reminded me the latter really should be in here instead of this.

I'm not sure if I've heard this album before. My general opinion of Jack White is that he's kind of overrated, and he seems to think really highly of himself, too. And, as such, this album isn't doing much to change my opinion of him.

Kinda just tired of Jack White's voice and playing but probably wasn't as sick of his shtick when this came out

This starts off ok but deteriorates into mediocre plodding rock.

Jack White takes a tour through 70s rock on his first solo album. It gives mixed results, but it gets off to a roaring start. The piano on the second half of the opener rocks and rolls, while the next two tracks absolutely rip. "Sixteen Saltines" is the closest thing here to his White Stripes material, and perhaps selfishly I think it's the best track; it's at least the most exciting. After that it's hard to find a rocking moment here as he focuses more on piano and folk rock. This didn't need to be all rippers to succeed, but if it was going to focus on more subdued songs I think the songwriting needs to be top notch, and it's not. "Blunderbuss" is such an odd title for the title track given how limp it is. By the end there's not much new or exciting left. White is a good songwriter and I appreciate him providing all this variety, but it's not a cohesive album and most of the songs leave you wanting.

Solid album but nothing really stood out

It is a well produced album - but I found it somewhat tedious. The warbly vocals are a bit too much for me. Got a bit of a Mungo Jerry vibe from a couple of tracks.

I liked the riff on freedom at 21 but otherwise it wasn't for me

Not a bad album. I would listen to something else by him to gauge my favoritability.

I know this is the dude from The White Stripes but I've never heard any of his solo stuff, so I'm interested to see what he's up to. Missing Pieces: Modest Mouse if they were ass Sixteen Saltines: definitely like the energy on this more than the first track but it's still not really clicking for me. I think I don't like his voice that much, at least not the way it's mixed here Freedom at 21: the vocals are giving Mindless Self Indulgence. this is a cool song, my favorite so far Love Interruption: the lyrics are compelling, the song is just okay Blunderbuss: it's fine Hypocritical Kiss: it's fine, lyrics are kinda stilted to me Weep Themselves To Sleep: boring as hell, no part of this works for me I'm Shakin': it's like a parody of Elvis and it just sounds corny to me, it doesn't have the swagger and charisma that this kind of song needs. YOU GOT ME NOIVOUS is funny though Trash Tongue Talker: it has some redeeming qualities but I still don't like it. feels like a song that men in sunglasses who record Facebook manifestos in their trucks would listen to Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy: something about this album just doesn't feel authentic to me. it's aping older artists but not in a way that innovates or improves upon it. it feels like an imitation not an homage. I Guess I Should Go To Sleep: this is the least listened song on the album on Spotify, which makes sense. Shakey Graves if he was ass On And On And On: it's whatever Take Me With You When You Go: at least this one was interesting, the switch up halfway through was cool. still not really into it, some of those vocals are roughhhh not really featuring this one. it's not THAT bad, it's just uninteresting for the most part and it doesn't sound that good to my ear. ++ the comments above about feeling like an imitation __ SCORE: 5/10 ADDED TO PLAYLIST: Freedom at 21

Heard it before. Everything this guy does sounds almost exactly the same, this album is just White Stripes but with more instruments. Freedom at 21 is watered down Seven Nation Army. The album sounds perfectly fine but I'm tired of people praising Jack for doing the most basic stuff over and over again 2/5

So far so Jack White. I don't actively dislike it, but there's not a lot grabbing me with this one.

Good. Sounds like led Zeppelin on a couple songs

Fav: Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy

Yeah I don't like this as much as The White Stripes. I think this might have been Jack White at his most annoying. 10/19

Sixteen Saltines is awesome. Not much else worth coming back to for me. I don’t hate this album I just think it doesn’t belong anywhere near a ‘must hear’ list. By comparison, White Blood Cells and Elephant definitely do. Hoping Jack’s latest ‘No Name’ album also makes the next edition of this book. Just about every track on that one is better than anything here.

I always get the feeling that somehow I "ought" to like Jack, the epitome of indie cool, or somesuch. But frankly I found this mediocre and tedious

Didn't likeit

I don't like his solo stuff

Jack White excellence not on display

Irrelevant

Some interesting elements, but quickly becomes boring. I wouldn't listen to it again.

Im not a huge fan of Jack's voice in this context. Feels like a more mellow album that his usual work but feels like his voice is overcompensating in a way.

It was alright I guess. Definitely not his best work but yeah. Some decentish moments, and I liked the drumming, but overall somewhat forgettable.

I was honestly expected a lot more for a Jack White album on this list. Compared to White Stripe albums, this wa bit more of a snooze. I appreciate this face of Mr White, but it just didn't sit with me.

The thing about Jack White music is that you can tell it's Jack White. Not saying that's a bad thing or a good thing it's just a thing. A decent album from a good musician.

Nothing in here I haven't heard before. The guitar is the highlight (and sometimes the lowlight as well)

Nicht wirklich meins.

Not crappy but still boring

Like a pub Zeppelin. Nothing really spectacular here. Executed well enough but unoriginal, predictable and eventually nauseating.

I don't know what he's trying to achieve with this album, I assume it's a gesture towards the vibes of the great American songbook writers but it just doesn't land. For such an iconic guitarist, it's also a bold choice to spend so much of the time behind the piano - and Keith Jarrett he is not. A few good singles save it.

Yawn Kinda go hum Not everything he does is gold Maybe it would have been better if he made a limited edition car with this album imbedded into the sound system so you could only listen to it when you drive

White Stripes are great. This was nothing new or revolutionary - no idea why it's on this list. It wasn't bad but only 2 stars for 'could do much better'

Some cool instrumentation and not much else.

Just didn't grab me

extremely meh. Just kinda boring. a bunch of background music for a shitty movie that I second screened. 2.

--Missing Pieces...I like the organ. song is fine --Sixteen Saltines...it's different. it's also very polished. Do I want "polished" from Jack White --Freedom at 21...nice heavy groove --Love Interruption...a super serious acoustic rock ballad. meh --Blunderbuss...oooh, strings and slide guitar! this is how you know Jack's made the next step in his musical journey! --Hypocritical Kiss...piano sounds good, I guess --Weep Themselves to Sleep...okay, this is good. diabolical piano work and the fuzzy guitar is back! --I'm Shakin'...an average throwback rocker. The extra musicians and backup singers don't make this better than what would also be an average White Stripes song --Trash Tongue Talker...another generic throwback but the ending kicks --Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy...a fun piano groove --I Guess I Should Go to Sleep...maybe I should. wait, there are two more tracks. sigh --On And On And On...and on it goes --Take Me With You When You Go...it's weird in that special Jack White way. Don't care for the first half, the back half kicks

Never heard of this guy. Pretty oldschool sounds considering its 2012 album. Good background music

Some songs were okay I guess...

Just fine

I don't have anything clever to say about this one. It was ok - not sure its among the best 1001 albums though. Probably wont listen to it again.

En tykkää. Joissain biiseistä oli hyvät biitit mutta en kuuntelisi uudelleen. Jack Whiten ääni/tapa laulaa ei miellyttänyt.

Fairly diverse, some ballads, some funk, some a bit more proggy, but nothing outstanding? Blows my mind that this was succesdul after releasing in 2012

Jack not my smack

In terms of instrumentals, it's decent, good even. But White's overperformative vocals are grating and kind of undercuts the album. Yes, Jack White, you should go back to bed.

5/10 - not a very modern album, I've heard it before, but not bad either

very underwhelming

This one was alright. It's Jack White, so a very familiar voice if you're a fan of his work. Nothing so unique that you could distinguish it from any of his other projects, though. A call back to the early 10s.

This was okay. I'm not really a fan of this style of music or Jack White's vocals, but I can see how this would appeal to some folks.

Starting off a Monday with Jack White...how fitting. Blunderbuss is certainly an album, let's just get this over with. See the difference between Jack White and White Stripes is that White Stripes have a few good tracks, that can't be said when Jack is solo at the wheel. Missing Pieces isn't necessarily a band start to the album it's every piece to the Jack White formula, out of tune backing vocals, weird sounding keys, Whites eccentric vocals and the occasional heavy distorted guitar, it's fine. I'd love to say it gets better from here but it doesn't. Lyrically Sixteen Salteens isn't a masterpiece by any means "I eat sixteen saltine crackers then I lick my fingers" ...inspiring Jack..truly. Even the arrangement is slightly chaotic but not in a way that fits, but more like Jack was trying to be unique, which is a theme of this album. No other track on this album is a stand out and I really don't have much more to say on this album as a whole, it's lyrically in the toilet, whites vocals irritate me, you get have some solid drumlines and fun riffs when jack's not assaulting his poor guitar to get incoherent squeels and wahs out of it but thats really all you're getting from this album. 1.2/5 MTW No, I can't be arsed. Listened to it, hated it, moved on. - HF 1/5 xo Ive always been hit or miss with Jack Whites work in general. The White Stripes catalogue as a whole in my opinion is a great example of how limitations can bring out the best in a bands ideas and direction. This is an environment where Jack Whites creativity excels for me. This album is definitely in that grey area between the end of White Stripes and the start of his more experimental albums. Listening to this album after already hearing songs off of later works like Boarding House Reach (2018) it’s clear that he hasn’t found his niche yet in this album. There’s good stuff here for sure, but half cooked is the words that come to mind, missing pieces is an anticlimactic album opener in general but saved by a tekky keyboard solo that does enough to keep me involved. I could go through each song one by one but that’s kind of how the album goes start to finish, good ideas that just haven’t quite been dug into deep enough, although some songs are good, blunderbuss hits well, as does love interruption. But I’m not gonna come back to this sadly. 1.7/5 FTW

It was fine but I still find it hard to get into his solo stuff

This just sounded like a worse version of the white stripes. Not terrible though

It’s fine but not essential listening. A bit of a weak effort actually. I find Jack White to be a bit of a one trick pony and his music is just milk pudding - sustenance but lacking in any real nourishment.

It just feels like to be an album you “must” hear before you die, it should introduce you to something new you can’t get elsewhere. And I’m struggling with what that might be for this album. “Imagine the White Stripes but at like 40% of the vitality?” “Blues rock with the production of 2012?” The songs themselves don’t really do it for me and then there don’t seem to be any historical or cultural reasons to hear this. Oh, okay, there it is: “I’m Shakin” is a fun 50s/60s revival. So, like, one song. Is there a 1001 Songs … project?

Didn't really like. Maybe due to the vocals.

Da scaricare per il viaggio

My opinon of Jack White, whether it be solo, or with any of his bands is that its always style over substance. Thats not to say he's not talented or that he can't write a good song, because he is and he can. Its just over styled and a forced element of "cool" is i ejected in every song, if that makes sense.

Combines the lack of teeth from 70s sorta rock with the dissonance of of 90s/00s without producing anything particularly interesting. Maybe I'm just not in the mood for it

Jack whites solo stuff never thrilled me. He certainly has a distinct solo sound, but most of the time it's not for me.

Sometimes speak singing does it for me. And sometimes it doesn’t. Jack White’s speak singing is in the latter camp for me.

its okay

Jack White has always been meh to me. Some of the White Stripes hits are classics, yes, but I usually change the song if one pops up randomly. Guess I just don’t care/ get the fuss. This album is pure Jack White, so… meh

Look, it’s not terrible, and the first couple of songs are good. But the longer it goes, the more bored I get. I liked this when it came out but I do not think it belongs on this list. There are better blues artists.

I prefer the Stripes. That being said, I do wish this kind of music was being made today. Favorite track: Love Interruption 2/5

i'm kinda fucking with the electric organ, but his singing is... something else for sure........... hmmm... some songs start off nicely and then go downhill into something i dont like lol bit repetitive............ and annoying at times but still love the electric organ LOL

weird, not quite my tempo

ehh its ok

how is this remarkable in any way?

Jack White is marmite and I’m still gorged from Michelin stars.

I like a lot of the music here, but I really do not like Jack's singing on most of these songs. It just doesn't fit the tracks, like when you hear a cover of a song you like and the new singer's voice just sounds too different to enjoy. And I don't have anything against his voice, I do like it on The White Stripes albums. But I think the difference is that WS albums are very raw, minimal, and scrappy, qualities that his vocals complement a great deal better. The fuller, more layered tracks on Blunderbuss just don't work as well. I'll also add that a few of the songs felt too derivative of Jack's obvious influences.

Not a fan.

Nothing really jumps out on this JW solo. Never quite as exciting as the WS. Has the feeling of being the soundtrack to a musical.

I don't necessarily dislike it...but, I don't necessarily like it either.

Not something i want to listen to as an album

niente di particolare

Missing Pieces (5/10) Sixteen Saltines (6/10) Freedom at 21 (7/10) Love Interruption (7/10) Blunderbuss (6/10) Hypocritical Kiss (6/10) Weep Themselves to Sleep (7/10) I’m Shakin’ (3/10) Trash Tongue Talker (4/10) Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy (3/10) I Guess I Should Go to Sleep (3/10) On and On and On (5/10) Take Me With You When You Go (5/10) 5.2/10

Jake white is a good musician, but he definitely can't sing

I thought I wasn't digging it bc the vocals aren't great, but it ended up fine enough. 2.4.

I remember how hyped up this record was before it was released, and how disappointed I was listening to it for the first time. It's still just as disappointing. Personal enjoyment: 2/5 Relevance to this list: 1/5

Not my favorite. Good for background music I guess, but he can’t really hold a tune very well. But I like the jazz-rock style and he’s not terrible, but he’s certainly not great.

I bought this album when it came out. I remember enjoying it. Listening to it today I found the music kind of irritating. Lyrics like “I want a love that will murder my own mother” (or something like that) a turn off. I guess I’ve moved on.

Sounds EXACTLY what you expect. Is this really one I NEED to hear???

Some songs good. Others, not my jam.

I think I finally figured out what it is about Jack White that I increasingly do not like - everything he does seems like an affectation and the more you notice it, the more you notice it, until the only thing you can see is him doing affectations. And that makes watching him an exercise in secondhand embarrassment.

Not really sure why'd you'd need to hear this before you die. It's not bad, but it's not very remarkable or memorable either.

it was okay, reminds me of the beatles but not in a good way.

This is fine. I don't think I'll ever play it again, but if I were at your house and you played it, I wouldn't think badly of you.

Eh, nothing special about this album. I remember lots of folk praised this as something genius when it first came out but I just don't see it.

Couple of memorables tunes, but otherwise pretty unnoteworthy. Wouldn't listen again.

OK music but why is it on the list? It came out in 2012 when rock was of course already well established, and does not seem to be any kind of turning point in the genre. Odd!

A markedly more vapid version of his usual stuff with White Stripes. It’s still massively inkeeping with his normal style ie quite shrieky, irksome, ultra Led Zep derivative and with garbage mixing but it’s all just a bit below par and with not a single noteworthy track which makes this album more like Blanderbuss by Jack Biege.

Not my cup of tea.

It's aight, a few good songs and a good listen.

This might be a tough listen. Personally, I never really connected with The White Stripes or any of Jack White’s other projects. Still, I thought I’d give his first solo album Blunderbuss a shot. Surprisingly, I didn’t hate it—but I also don’t think it’s essential listening. I’m honestly puzzled as to how it ended up on any “must-hear” lists. The album feels pretty basic overall, without offering anything particularly new or groundbreaking. There are a few decent moments scattered throughout, but nothing that truly stands out. Favourite track: Love Interruption – a rare moment of genuine intrigue. Least favourite track: Blunderbuss the title track was very dull. Album artwork: A moody, melancholic cover that suits the tone, even if the music doesn’t quite live up to it.

It's fine but not really fussed by it

It was alright but I'm not going to listen to it again

It’s alright music. Not my style. I listened to some other songs of his that weren’t in this album and none of them drew me in either.

Such a distinct sound

Better than Ryan Adams?

I did not really like this.

Not the White Stripes

I ought to like this - all the ingredients are there: rock genre, lots of guitar, riffs, etc - but I don't. The voice isn't strong enough and grates, the riffs are weedy and theres no power or resolution in the music. It's very formulaic.. I didn't like the White Stripes for the same reasons.

First listen. Not been a fan of any of “The White Stripes” albums I’ve listened to before. This was not an exception, but I found it a little bit more enjoyable.

Eh. I don't know, I just wasn't a fan. The vocal style is not sure me I think.

This is pretty much White Stripes, and like White Stripes, it just doesn't land with me. I have tried REALLY hard to enjoy White Stripes, but their music (like this album) always feels too busy and noisy to me. In some cases, it's the guitar (Jack), in more cases it's the drums (Meg) (or more specifically - the damn cymbals), and in even more cases, it's both. Even without Meg, this still has that busy noisy cymbal thing. Like several White Stripes albums, I've given this a fair shake, and I can only conclude that Jack and I are just not compatible.

Helt ok

Would be a respectable album if it was just the backing tracks without lyrics… 3/10 for the instruments alone

I think I like what he did in White Stripes more.

I had to listen to this several times because it came across as a one-trick pony on initial listens. The first few songs are crunchy guitar-driven, piano-backed, and drum-backed songs that, while fun, were nothing that hadn’t already been heard from Jack White. The rest of the album becomes more unique as it embraces other styles, such as blues, country, bluegrass, and vaudeville/ragtime. I really like the songs that he sings with others, as they contrast nicely with White’s voice. Although the album is exciting and fast-paced musically, the theme and lyrics are dark. All songs are from the singer's point of view and focus on love, loss, abuse (physical and mental), jealousy, bad relationships, and being dominated. While the singer realizes their predicament, they don’t care to change anything in most instances. There are a few times when they recognize the harm and danger they are in and how it is holding them back, but they feel powerless to do anything. A few times, the singer calls others out for falling into their predicament but can offer no solutions. This album showcases Jack White's influence on prior projects and those that came after this album. Although he is talented, I like listening to Jack White in small doses, and this album doesn’t change my opinion, as it is what you would expect, just with a slightly different veneer.

I generally like Jack Whites music but I wasn’t keen on this when it came out and it hasn’t aged well

Okay, I mean it's fine... but I feel like this is just exactly what I'd expect from a Jack White solo album, without any surprises or standouts.

Only disappointment. At least only one song had that screeching nonsense.

Jack White blues/rock that was OK. Nothing bad, but nothing that rises to the level of his White Stripes work. I'm going to listen to Elephant now I think.

google show me Rock Music

Jack White's music is the definition of "I know it's good but I couldn't possibly care less" to me

Blunder indeed.

Good rock-blues album. No divisive songs. All good. Probably won’t return often.

Not the biggest fan of his voice (guitar is excellent)

I honestly didn’t really care about this when listening to it to be honest. It’s ok overall but I think Jack has done way better albums especially No Name. But you can tell the ideas are there for what he does in the future. 5/10

I'm so back and forth on this one. First tracks were all ehhh but the ladder half so far is better. Strange, peculiar vocals with very theatrical instrumental and it's blended the best. The elements feel a bit out of place as do some of the songs. Namely On and on and on starts with like a smooth jazz opening and shifts to a soft piano with fuzzy vocals. It's kind of boring. I'd rather just listen to the instrumental lyrics don't add much. What is this string instrument? I don't think I like this.

It’s not bad, interesting sonically, but nothing reaches out and grabs my attention either. I’m not the biggest White Stripes guy anyway so that’s not a huge surprise to me.

blunderbuss ain't blunderbussin

Well.... That was a nothing burger.

Jack White can be hit or miss, and this album is a hodgepodge of many different styles... Blues, Rock, Soul, Country, Folk, he's got it all, a 5 tool player. But honestly, 3 good songs in "Love Interruption", "Sixteen Saltines", and "I'm Shakin'" and a shit load of filler.

Sounded like Jack White. It was okay.

Expected better

It was so incredibly painfully boring. Jack White seems like a really cool guy, but every time I hear his music, it bears me to tears.

Fairly enjoyable

ass istg i tried it hurts to listen to maybe like a 1.5

It's fine. I remember this releasing and it being fine. Can't say you need to listen before you die

.... ok.

Very mid. Lyricism was bad but there were some nice hooks in places, I enjoyed the title track.

I know that folks have a hard on for Jack White. I think he is fine...that is all

Not as good as the white stripes. Solo projects rarely are

I really don't see how this is an essential album to listen to before one's exit from this mortal coil. It's fine. It has some weird stuff. I just don't care. "I Guess I Should Go to Sleep." Guess this album should've ended with that. Like this is why Ronnie James Dio was snubbed entirely??

Starts off strong. I dig it when it's stripped down and rocks. Not as much when it gets slow and orchestrated. Lots of different style going on here, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Back half kind falls off for sure.

No me ha interesado. No ha conseguido atraerme y prestarle atención. Lo mismo lo vuelvo a escuchar alguna vez.

I just really don’t like him that much.

Inoffensive but surely not worthy of a place on the list of the greatest albums of all time. Not one track on the album stood out to me and definitely weaker than the White Stripes' records.

Annoying voice and repetitive musically. Ran out of ideas after a couple tracks.

Some bangers, but, given he is just making a modernish version of old sounds, not necessary to hear before one dies

unremarkable but not terrible

It sounds old school but in a new manner. It's ok.

some stuff its a little cool but wont really stick to me

This is a weird artist - at least as far as my musical tastes go. Some of the music is actually not bad and some is terrible. I can't think of anything to compare the tolerable bits to, but some of the parts I really don't like sound like intros to children's parables from the days of old. Vocally he sounds a bit like Robert Plant with his testicles dipped in hot water. Even more odd is the fact that he seems like he's singing quite clearly, but I find it difficult to understand. With music that I like, the understanding vocals part is easily skittered around. That is not the case here. I have to admit I've not listened to him enough to speak to the fact of how talented or not he is. Musically he sounds quite competent - it's just something I really don't care to listen to.

Joder, ¿es cosa mía o esto siendo de 2012 tiene pinta de ser de una década antes?

Pretty good

I don’t know, I wasn’t offended by this. Wasn’t sitting there hating it. But if this came on in a restaurant, it’d be music that I wouldn’t even notice and would have no reaction to because I’d forget what it sounded like immediately.

Squeaky clean, poster-boy pastiche of yesteryear rock styles. I've never been a fan of this stuff. A couple of nice tracks, and I like how he borrows from garage rock, psych rock, etc. within his blues rock palette. But overall I find the songs and the sound uninspiring. Maybe I'm not nostalgic enough for "good old fashioned rock n roll". 2.5*

2/5 Very inconsistent tracklist which has moments of melodic brilliance, more moments grating to the ears, and even more moments of sheer boredom. Not an enjoyable experience as a whole, with the production not great, sometimes actively bad, and White not acting as a particularly compelling lyricist at all. In fact, it's like listening to the very worst of old man Paul McCartney in the later stages of the album, with an attempted whimsicality which is just annoying for the most part. Missing Pieces 4.5/5 (FAV) Sixteen Saltines 1.5/5 (LEAST FAV) Freedom At 21 3/5 Love Interruption 4.5/5 Blunderbuss 3.5/5 Hypocritical Kiss 3/5 Weep Themselves To Sleep 2/5 I'm Shakin' 2.5/5 Trash Tongue Talker 2/5 Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy 2/5 I Guess I Should Go To Sleep 1.5/5 On And On And On 4/5 Take Me With You When You Go 3/5

dnf at track 4 :/

This particular album from Jack White just really isn't my thing. It's not a bad album though, just not my bag.

Jack White's vocals - annoying in the White Stripes, annoying as a solo artist.

So fun. This is a really strong 2.

Not bad but extremely repetitive.

It all sounds good, but in the end I'm not sure I really care about any of these songs other than a couple of them. It's a nice listen but certainly not essential.

Decent album. A bit White-stripey and you can hear the country influence. Worth a listen, but not earth shattering.

Meh meh

4/10 - I did not enjoy most of these songs tbh. His voice was pretty annoying and I did not like most of the instrumentals.

So much talent. Brilliant producer, guitarist and keyboardist. But something critical is missing; it sounds like product instead of art. I think back to the White Stripes' Elephant (which I think is brilliant). Same voice, same musical inclinations and it FELT genuine. This, by contrast sounds like one clever idea after another just laid out as they arise, with no overarching vision, nothing to say, no effort at coherence. I wish he would collaborate more. Because all of that talent could use some critical feedback.

Nah this guy doesn't deserve 4 places on this list

A whole lot of meh. . Props to him for finally expanding his instrumental palette, but I am perplexed why critics keep enjoying this shtick. It's like no one is brave enough point out that emperor has no clothes. The tracks "Love Interruption", "Freedom At 21", and "On And On And On" were bearable. "Love Interruption" frankly sounds like a poor knock off of a Robert Plant/Alison Krauss collaboration. Honestly, another Jack White driven album that no one needs to hear before they die. I would not be surprised if it comes off the list in further editions of the book. It gets a 2, instead of a 1 because Bob Ludwig mastered it.

Meh, mostly.

I don't really get it. I didn't know that Jack White had a solo album. I get that he's this rambling jangly blues rock and roll troubadour or whatever--and makes a lot of music that fits that mold and all of it is fine and kind of runs together. Is this essential? Along with other albums he's done as White Stripes? I don't think so. Just kind of background music, and a couple times I thought, "this album is still going?"

not for me. album kinda felt like a nothing sandwich. singers voice is kind of annoying. meh. best song was love interruption imo.

I liked Sixteen Saltines the most, it reminded me of the band Mindless Self Indulgence, but the rest of the songs didn't stand out to me. The songs had a similar feel with the consistent singing style and genre, but I couldn't get fully into the theme.

Like the bluesy guitar rock instrumental parts, but the singing was not as great.

Se laisse écouter Mais rien de vraiment marquant.

It was interesting but not great

It was decent not great

Listen, I like a lot of Jack White’s music, and this album is pretty decent. But I have serious questions of why this was included on a list of albums you NEED to listen to. My 2 star ratings are reserved for albums like this, where I don’t agree that it crosses the hurdle for inclusion. I think this list has a problem with its periodic revisions. There seems to be a need to include X amount of music from the past few years every time they revise it. Does this album help anyone understand the history of music or music culture generally? Does anyone look back, just over a decade, and think, “Yeah, that first Jack White solo album was MAJOR?” Nah.

2.5 - not for me even tho i love the white stripes, the mixing isn’t very good and the lyrics are annoying

I surprised myself by quite likeing the whitestripes and am again quite surprised by not likeing this . Obviously meg was the true genius

I like White Stripes but Jacks solo stuff doesn't do much for me. I think he shines when hes more restricted in what he can and cant do.

Hän on "tehny levyn".

2012 album, tweede 10's album na Konnichiwa maar deze is vrij medium, laat me beetje koud

Mostly just noise.

Pretty listenable. Doesn't really move me but at least it's not boring

don't remember a second

I never liked Jack White at all. His bass "solos" and his voice annoy me a bit. A few songs near the end try hard to sound like the Beatles' "Abbey Road" but fail. I can appreciate Jack writing almost all of the album and there's a few good ideas. This album is a stereotype of indie rock. 2 stars for "Blunderbuss."

I got off the Jack White train right after the White Stripes, and this is kind of why: this album! It sounds like the White Stripes but with none of the vitality and charm. I understand he did different stuff later, which I might like, but I don’t care for this much.

Propuesta interesante la de Jack como solista, muy groovy y blues

DNF. Es war ganz nett und witzig zwischendurch, ich hab die Hälfte gehört ca.

I thought we were done with White Stripes. How many bloody records? They all have about 3 good tracks and a load of filler. I was personally well and truly done with them by the time this came out so I've never heard it, nor do I recall any of it from the radio. Freedom at 21 is the first track that's actively annoying. The best song is I'm Shakin' which is a cover. I think I did actually hear that one. The rest just slipped by really, unexceptionally. Eh, I don't hate it. But I don't like it. Blues rock is not my bag really, it has to be truly outstanding to grab me.

man, i tried to keep an open mind with this one but i just don't care about jack white. i loved a handful of white stripes songs back in middle school but since then, everything he does just seems steeped in pretentious art school tim burton vibes. the fans are no better - i think they just like that he looks like a cross between johnny depp and gerard way. oh yeah, the music. it was pretty dull overall and didn't make any impact on me. the lyrics were nonsensical at times, his voice is weirdly nasal, but I'll give him points for the varied instrumentation throughout. why is this on the list though favorites: sixteen saltines, freedom at 21

Even though I should like Jack’s music based on the attributes aligning with my tastes, I never have. Not even sure why. Most comes down to melodies I think. I’m either touched by them or not..never been by his. I gave the album another chance cause it’s been a minute. Same thing..no likey.

If you like Jack White, you will like this Jack White album.

music for a charles schwab commercial sixteen saltines weep themselves to sleep

Not my jam but There were parts that I enjoyed. I think it’s probably pretty good album it’s just not for me. 2

A whole lotta meh, not super interesting and just downright strange at points. 2

The white stripes broke up for this.. super underwhelming and I expected more from jack white

A lot of hype that I never really liked.

this sounds like white stripes b sides, which perhaps provides some clarity for why this list includes the lesser white stripes albums. i think that jack white is supremely talented, but it feels like he got famous for being a weird lil guy at a time when we didn't have enough weird lil guys and i can't help but wonder if he's chained to his schtick or if this is just really what he's after when he records for himself.

I remember not loving this album, but also not hating it. It just didn't feel noteworthy, and not a single song from it has stayed in my head since I listened.

Good - not great.

The longer this went, the more I lost interest in it. There’s nothing inherently bad about ‘Blunderbuss’, I just didn’t find it very interesting or remarkable.

Lost it.

More fine background music

First few tracks are solid, drops off considerably after that.

It was ok American taste I would say.

Not really digging it

Pretty good. Doesn't quite have the intensity of The White Stripes, but it is a technical masterpiece.

Unoffensive

Just ok

This was well made and parts are interesting, but it wasn't really my bowl of rice.

It’s possible there aren’t actually 1001 albums you need to listen to before you die. This was fine but definitely not groundbreaking/Earth-shattering/terribly special.

It was ok, not my favorite Jack White material

missing pieces- ew. 3 sixteen saltines- ew. shit that would play in wayne. 4. ok actually the lyrics are funny. freedom at 21- 3. ew love interruption- 4 or 5 blunderbuss- 3 hypocritical kiss- 2 weep themselves to sleep- dont care 2 im shakin- 3 or 4 trash tongue talker- 3 hip eponymous poor boy- 2 i guess i should go to sleep- what i should be doin instead of listening to this. 3 on and on and on- take me with you when you go- i dont wanna

Eh I really just didn’t enjoy this album. At a lot of times the voice really bothered me- I can’t pinpoint exactly what it is but something swayed me away from liking it. I’ve heard worse but I don’t think I would listen again.

Super inessential; while Lazaretto is a lot more assured and less concerned with the White Stripes legacy, I’d argue Jack White (love him as i do) hasn’t done anything to land on this list since Consolers of the Lonely (which isn’t on this list).

It sounds like someone who isn't sure if they are in the 60s, 70s or 80s, and so is trying to interpret them all at once.
