Reviews (page 11 of 11)

You got me noiivus. This is the type of album that's catnip to the audience of this website apparently... never seen so many 5 star reviews on the "top" section of the reviews. I liked the White Stripes album that I got previously more than I thought I would, so I went into this album with a slightly more open mind. I feel like the songs are crafted well enough, they're just not doing anything interesting to me, at all. If this was not "The First Solo Album by Jack White" there is no way we'd be talking about it now. Two Starz

Disappointed. Most was pretty bad and normally expect a lot. Was excited to have a jack white album and got let down.

It's not unpleasant but I find it unremarkable. It's really in the top 1001? Really? I feel like in 10 more years this will fall out.

It's better than I thought it would be when taking into account the Wiki write-up. Not as one dimensional as The White Stripes. I thought it had a bit of depth and variation to the songwriting. A high 2

I realize that the guy is somewhat of a musical genius. And he was really cool on a few episodes of American Pickers that I saw but this album just doesn’t do it for me.

Ok album with some good songs.

Not my favorite Jack White album, there are some good songs on here.

Mostly know him from White Stripes. Crazy range between their sound, his personal sound, and Six Inch Heels on Lemonade.

Just can’t stand his voice.

Overrated

Not a huge fan.

I prefer his latter 2 albums

Fun and groovy but not really sure it deserves a place on this list. loved the first track.

You have to hand it to Jack. What he lacks in musical substance his stylist makes up for with nifty hats. He is certainly a virtuoso of affectation. It’s always funny reading critics pretending the emperor has clothes lest they insult the kiddeos for their McMusic. Case in point, Love Interruption isn’t a mediocre Son of a Preacher Man rip-off. Nope, it’s a bluesy blues ballad that is gospel-infused Americana and country soul. Like George Carlin warned, “It's the same with ‘buttery’ and ‘lemony’ and ‘chocolatey.’ ‘Real chocolatey goodness.’ You know what that means? No fucking chocolate!” You know what, “bluesy” means? No fucking blues. Along with no gospel…no Americana…no country…and no soul. Jack might be able to passably parrot Robert Plant’s vocal style on a few tunes but his chops on guitar are laughably overrated. It’s one thing to mimic vocals and quite another to bend strings in a way that stands the test of time. I kept waiting for the guitar wunderkind to show up. I’m still waiting.

I tried... the album didn't peak any interest. I'm shakin' was the best song to me. Just some safe background music.

I dont remembr any of it

Meh. Kind of annoying.

Tried to listen without prejudice, but it's hard. His voice is horrible and he seems like the worst guitar hipster in the world. At least this album has some bass on it. Still not for me.

Jack Shite

Dunno why this is on the list. Nothing spectacular about this

I don’t really like Jack Whites voice, but the songwriting is good. A lot of it felt like filler, and many tracks were lacklustre but the highlights were amazing. Weep Themselves To Sleep is phenomenal. I think I’m not a big fan of this type of music but it’s alright.

I want to like him more, just can’t

not very interesting and with stupid lyrics

2/5. Jack White isn’t bad by any means as I do enjoy a few White Stripes songs, but his voice and talent has just never really done it for me.

För cool för mig

Love my man Jack white's guitar playing, but the record just didn't do it for me. The album had a grabbag of rock styles, showing the range of Jack. 2.5 stars.

Aika gootti kansi. Levy blaa, vikassa biisissä luulin et alko soimaan Led Zeppelin

Didn't care for the first half of the album, but the second half was alright. I liked I'm Shakin' and Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy

Surprisingly decent first half, expected boring blues rock on the second half. Why is this album here again?

Generic rock with a hint of blues. I never understood how this guy got so popular.

Harmless; but also, nothing memorable.

Too many waltz type songs. Jack whites voic e grates. 3.5/10

Very ordinary, no tracks stand out, I cannot see why this album made the list.

It’s objectively good but it just doesn’t appeal to me personally. Have decided to rate on how much I like it rather than quality. Fave track: Love Interruption Rating: 2

Meh plus unoriginal. No idea why this was included, it’s not Jack White’s best work by far.

I like The White Stripes but I didn’t really get into this album. It has a good sound but none of the songs hooked me.

he's noyvous. "I guess I should go to sleep" mood I thought i would really like this. I was mistaken.

I listened to this 11 hours into a flight so maybe that was a handicap but nothing grabbed me on this album.

No song struck out, bet overall skanja bija laba

I'll play it if I want to look cool.

Just meh bit something I’d return for

Not terrible, just not terribly exciting. I don't think I'm a fan of the muffled effects of everything, it makes everything sound the same. 2/5

Pretty ok. I like Jack White’s production sound but his songwriting has never done much for me. Most of his songs just make me want to listen to the artists he’s inspired by.

I like some of the stuff the White Stripes did so I came into this one expecting good things, but honestly the songs bored me. The first track on the album was good, it my attention fell off quick after that. It felt like checking your watch during a movie and seeing you still had another hour to go.

6/10 - Jack White doing his usual thing. Jangly guitar, duets, sort-of blues. Not awful. Again with the school days thing, bleh.

I've taken a look at the list of albums we're going to listen to, and I think it's pretty bloated. This album is a great example. Jack White has three albums on this list. Two from the White Stripes, and this solo album. That is two albums too many. White Blood Cells is five-out-of-five indie garage rock album of the early aughts. Between that album and this album, Jack White made a dozen albums. He has nothing new to say on this album. Basically the only people still interested in Jack White's music at this point have been fans for a long time, who would say, "He's still got it!" to practically anything he'd put out.

It was ok but hard to get too excited

Totally fine and inoffensive, but not much more than that

Eh. Not impressed

初听感觉有些欢快,过后没啥感觉了,可能也是我没认真听吧

Bastante flojo. Mucha pereza este fulano

Music is OK, nothing to write home about. Don't like his voice. Doubt my opinion will change with more listens.

Starts like rock (3/5), sure enough, but quickly transitions to folk rock which is not something I particularly enjoy

Very mid Objectively good, subjectively forgettable

Pretty good, classic Jack White. Nothing really remarkable but a good jam.

I liked the album and listened twice. However, nothing really stuck with me.

I liked the guitar and piano. That's about it. Nothing amazing about this album.

2/5. Look, I don't want it is but Jack White is not my type of music. I love rock and guitar driven songs but there is just something that throws me off. I even genuinely liked a lot of these songs. Just not one for the repeat. The songs weren't good enough I guess.

The Rolling Stones if they were hipster theater kids

Kon me echt niet bekoren

Meh. But I don’t really care for him much.

Detta inte särskilt kul.

It's not bad, but Jack White's solo stuff just isn't for me.

Просто ок. Вокал тяжеловато идет, но звук норм Алкоальбом: караоке с друзьями в 3 ночи

как будто слишком консервировано

A certain departure from the raw and minimalist sound of The White Stripes, Jack White’s solo debut leaves a lot to be desired. First of all the vocals sound way of on some tracks, especially the ones with stripped-down production. Jack White is better at creating rock anthems, as shown with the songs "Sixteen Saltines" and "Freedom at 21,". However the electric guitar that soars on these tracks sounds really bad at times as well. Looking at the positives. One of the album's strengths lies in its versatility. Tracks like "Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy" and "Blunderbuss" incorporate elements of country and folk, adding a refreshing twist to the overall sound. Also the song-writing for most of the tracks is quite good. This album isn’t all bad, but the overall sound just does not sound good in my ears and that’s why the low score.

jack white is real eh for me. i don't think i enjoyed this as much as the two white stripes albums i've heard, and i thought both of those were average. this one was boring on the whole. i'll admit i'm not the biggest blues fan, but this in particular could not grab my attention. it was easier with the higher energy songs, but my goodness the low energy songs were rough. not for me.

Some tracks that I liked. Not really sure how to categorise the music here and maybe that’s the whole point. Maybe Jack White is trying to broaden his sounds to more than just bluesy garage rock. Quite unlike The White Stripes and it’s a bit more polished of a record.

Can't get into Jack White's music at all. After a track or two it becomes irritating.

not very good but easily better than any of the white stripes albums i’ve heard

DNF i do not like jack whites vocals

i dont like this im also in a bad mood but this is making me even more annoyed no

A lot of 2010s rock is completely soulless and this is not an exception. Vocals, lyrics both suck and even when the instrumentals are good they feel derivative. Not a single bit of substance on this album Also this guy looooves misogyny Freedom at 21 is absurd and then his excuse is like yeah i was talking about technology actually.... i have female friends....

I don't like

Sry, not my music.

nothing special

This album just didn't captivate me at all. It may be my mood today or the lack of musical hooks to grab me. Won't listen again.

geit eso

this genuinely made me angry

Nah… isn’t my type. I didn’t even listen to it

Once again, this is just not the music that I like. I liked a few of the songs but I don’t see myself going back to listen to them. I like the following songs: Trash Tongue Talker On And On And On Take Me With You When You Go

La voz del hombre es un poco alterada y con subibajas

Perhaps if I enjoyed Jack White's voice more, I might be able to examine his lyrics more closely. And if I enjoyed his guitar tone more, I might be able to pay closer attention his songcraft. But I struggle to do either. The melodies tend to follow the same template, eating up all the metric space available. The riffs are practiced garage and blues shapes, usually with a little twist to justify the publishing royalties, but not so much as to suggest he isn't part of a seasoned tradition. As a figure, I find him inscrutable, but singularly uninteresting. Meg was the interesting one in the White Stripes and it's significant that the songs that sound best here have him backed by female vocalists. This may even be what the lyrics are about - there is definitely something about women going on here - but I get the feeling the game isn't worth the candle. 1.5 That thing he does. Jack White, yet again, with a volley of absolutely worthless non-songs. The addition of competent musicians this time round makes no difference to the artistic emptiness of White’s shtick. 0/5

Missing Pieces: no es mi estilo, ya no me gusta como suena el cantante. Sixteen Saltines: muy rock, osea no me gusta. Freedom At 21: no me gusta nada, tipo me taladra mucho la cabeza. I Guess I Should Go To Sleep: esta no esta mal, no me molesto On And On And On: meh, flojo estribillo. Take Me With You When You Go: arrancando me gusto, hasta que se escucharon las voces que spn flojas no lo siguiente. En conclusion, no me gusto. no escucharia ninguna de las canciones en ningun momento de mi vida. entiendo igual que a alguien le puedan gustar, pasa que no es mi estilo en absoluto.

Not a fan at all.

Same as everything else he does, just noise

i... don't even know what to say tbh. it's like jimmy urine's wacky vocals on an acoustic classical rock inspired track. i really don't get it. i don't want to get it honestly.

Look, I can recognize the importance of the White Stripes, and I think I could even learn to love them, but a Jack White solo album is just a bridge too far! The best moments on this sound like a wannabe Led Zeppelin IV, and I don't even like Led Zeppelin IV!

Bland, unsurprisingly White Stripes-esque indie-rock aggravated by Jack White's singing. Lots of uninteresting, shallow hooks and fillers (e.g. 'Missing Pieces'). No melodies that grab you or songs that pull you in. 'Hypocritical Kiss' has a stupid name but is the best of the bunch

I do not enjoy this kind of music. Whiney and boring.

hot trash fucking hate this shit

Seriously don’t understand why Jack White is on this list. Could only get halfway through the album.

Terrible

Annoying

Very boring

His voice does not please me. Fingernails on a chalkboard

whiny misogynistic divorce-core trash. a little funny that from my initial read of "freedom at 21" was "wow, is *appallingly* misogynistic" which is what me listen closer so of course when i look at the wikipedia article jack white's response to this criticism was "no it's about *technology*". Sure bud. pretty much start to finish it's nails on a chalkboard singing over instrumentation that alternates between insipid and uninspired. shoutout to the pedal steel guitar on the title track which made me think of better albums.

I hated this, I find Jack Whites voice so grating.

Jack White rarely provides any of what I'm looking for in music This collection is no different No terrible, just nothing for me here

Wished it was over by 2nd track, but kept going for a bit (could not finish the album). The 3rd track saw Jack doing a bizarre almost rap filled with awful falsettos at the ends of lines and what sounds like a toddler's attempt at mimicking Tom Morello on guitar. The album (from what I could get through) felt like Jack's audition to be the worst member of The Black Keys.

Not my fav

not sure who this album was made for but it’s not me, jack was better in the white stripes imo album art: he wanna be edward cullen soooo bad

I'm not sure why this on this list and not a White Stripes album. This album doesn't belong on a list like this.

Jack White could be on the right side of The White Stripes breaking up and it could all be Meg's fault, but he makes it so incredibly damn hard to care, let alone take his side. He sounds like he's poorly emulating The Rolling Stones. At least the Stones had some redeeming quality. All this amounts to is piss-poor breakup music, or should I say, a piss-poor attempt at gaslighting paired with annoying amounts of "woe is me". I don't feel bad for this guy in the slightest.

Jack Shite

worst one so far the singer sounds like hes bored to sing idk

There’s just something about Jack White’s voice that puts me right off everything he does - Hotel Yorba by the White Stripes is about the only song of his I can get all the way through, even then I’m grateful it’s only two minutes long. I quite like the music on this record - each time a new track started, I thought, Oh, this might be okay… then he’d sing and spoil it. I think, apart from anything else, I always have that wretched doorbell song in the back of my mind and I can never forgive him for it.

No he conectado demasiado (no lo he llegado a terminar). No todo puede ser perfecto.

Is his name rhyming slang ..... ? 3/10

No. Sorry, but no. This album just isn't good. It's like Led Zeppelin, but with no real talent. And did he really say, Woman, I've got no truck with you "? Really? Lame, unmemorable and just not at all a good album.

I don’t mean to be disrespectful, but I don’t think this album belongs on here There were some decent tracks in here, but it felt very outdated (although it might’ve been going for that?) and it’s possible that it was just me, but the mixing/mastering was flat out bad considering it’s one of the more recent albums on here Again, it might’ve been intentional in order to give it a more vintage feel, but it hurt the overall listening experience I didn’t connect with this album at all and although there are some objectively good moments, it wasn’t enough to make this album enjoyable for me Favorites: None Honorable Mentions: None

I liked The White Stripes a lot when I was in junior high, and I remember this being a huge deal when it came out -- I'm not sure why but I never gave it a listen. It's pretty fucking annoying.

nu l am ascultat ca e naspa

Oh wow! Another uninspired rock album on this list? Color me impressed!

this is shit

Just really not my vibe, there was no song that I enjoyed.

I couldn't get into this at all.

Grown man singing like an angsty teen Terrible lyrics trash songwriting Awful guitar tone that sounds like nails on a chalkboard Terrible listening expierence. Not sure why its on this list, I deffinitly didnt need to listen to this album in my life time. Waste of my time 0/10 trash. 🙃

Kjedelig

Not for me...

jack white. gross

Everything about this felt off-putting, hollow and soulless. Based on other reviews this is clearly not a widely held opinion but Jack White just seems kind of shallow and juvenile to me - music, lyrics, themes, vocals, all of it. Particularly stark on this solo album.

I am finding myself unimpressed with this album. It is one that I have always wanted to listen to but never got around to. Freedom At 21 feels incomplete, like the first draft of a song that just needed some more thought and work. It isn't a terrible album, but it does fall flat for me. I don't think I would listen to this one again.

should not be on the list

No a fan

Unfortunately this doesn't have the impact of a White Stripes album. I lasted 4 tracks and got fed up.

There were times when the music was nice, but overall I am simultaneously exhausted and endlessly bored by Jack White

Невозможно скучное. Едва ли 30 минут, а ощущается как вечность, а впереди ещё 10

The first 4 tracks were HORRIBLE, i didn't like them at all. The rest of the albums was ok for 2 reasons: 1) the melodies were good, especially the piano sound in these type of songs. 2) the irony in some of the lyrics in some of the tracks was kinda funny. Also i found the last two tracks really interesting, they were def the highlight of the album for me. So i still don't feel like this is the kind of the album i would reach out for but it was interesting to listen to tbh. 4.3/10

Down with this sort of thing! A White Stripes and now this! Stop making me feel bad.

blah... not at all to my taste

This genre isn't really my thing. I feel like I'm listening to a copy-cat version of stuff I heard decades ago. It all feels pretty contrived and uninteresting.

1. piecez - 0 2. zaltinez - 1 3. freedom - 0 4. love - 1.5 5. blunder - 1 6. kizz - 1 7. zleep - 1 8. zhaking - 1 9. tongue - 0 10. boy - 0 11. zleep - 1 12. on - 0 13. go - 0

DNF. Yeah, nah. Not my vibe at all.

Unremarkable. Some nice Yardbirds style guitar sounds, but the best song on it by a mile is his cover of Little Willie John's "I'm Shakin'" . I am surprised that this qualifies as an album that anyone needs to hear - everything on this was done much better by him in the White Stripes, and before that by the first 3 Gun Club albums. Anyone would be better informed by listening to Magic Sam's Black Magic, or Eric Dolphy - Out To Lunch , or Sun Ra - Space Is The Place none of which made the list. One Star for not being good enough at all, and for needlessly taking up a space.

Jack white sounded like an angsty teen throughout the entire album.

eh. very whatever

Should not be on list

Not my type

Clichéd rock stuff. Felt like I was back in the Seventies, and not in a good way. The end sounds like someone had listened to The Kinks a bit too much.

the worst crime: boring

How has Jack White come up twice in this? Possibly the most boring musician of the last few decades. I absolutely cannot hack this. Awful.

Suger.... alltså va e poängen me denna skiva

Not my type of music. Don’t enjoy his singing. Did not listen fully through.

Honestly, couldn't get into it at all. I know it's personal but I couldn't stand the vocals

Awful. Just a mess of his other projects without an inspired song to be found

Not really my cup of tea

I got bored and couldn’t finish it. Nothing about it was super compelling to me

Again, not my kind of jams

Not my 'cup o tea'.

Not my cup of tea!

Wildly overrated

Very unenjoyable it brought a frown to my face, there was like one okay song

What a blunder

very classic jack white rock riffs, nothing amazing though

Very tonally pleasant. Classic background vocal recording tracks. Was nice to go back in time to when drum sets were recorded in mono and hard panned. Lots of hard panning in general, experimenting with the stereo field. Something many modern recordings don’t seem to do much of anymore.

I don't get why this is so appealing.

this was coasting to a cool 2 until he said "noivus" in "I'm Shakin'." the atrocious vocals of "Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy" are just the nail in the coffin

Heard before: no I know these are random, but why the fuck do I have to listen to THREE Jack White records and only one Count Basie? Or really anyone of any musical import other than this calculating cypher. I mean, he makes Beck look sincere. He works hard, the sounds are great, esp the guitars, but this is forgettable music. Didn't need to hear it before I died. Top tracks: Freedom at 21, Tongue Trash Talker, Take Me With You When You Go (I guess)

This album's black and white cover depicts a pale and somber young woman wearing a funeral bonnet in early 1800's America. A man's hand can be seen stealing a locket from her breast. This image superimposes a blurry swarm of battle droids from some bleak future; their mass further darkening a darkened sky. The cover's promise of uniquely meshed musical stylings from the past and future, layered with themes of war and death, is not kept or even hinted at. Instead we find the generic mean of pretentious rock throughout.

Ugh, otro disco de este sujeto. No le entiendo su ruido, ni su guitarreo.
