Blunderbuss

I don't know what he's trying to achieve with this album, I assume it's a gesture towards the vibes of the great American songbook writers but it just doesn't land. For such an iconic guitarist, it's also a bold choice to spend so much of the time behind the piano - and Keith Jarrett he is not. A few good singles save it.

Starting off a Monday with Jack White...how fitting. Blunderbuss is certainly an album, let's just get this over with. See the difference between Jack White and White Stripes is that White Stripes have a few good tracks, that can't be said when Jack is solo at the wheel. Missing Pieces isn't necessarily a band start to the album it's every piece to the Jack White formula, out of tune backing vocals, weird sounding keys, Whites eccentric vocals and the occasional heavy distorted guitar, it's fine. I'd love to say it gets better from here but it doesn't. Lyrically Sixteen Salteens isn't a masterpiece by any means "I eat sixteen saltine crackers then I lick my fingers" ...inspiring Jack..truly. Even the arrangement is slightly chaotic but not in a way that fits, but more like Jack was trying to be unique, which is a theme of this album. No other track on this album is a stand out and I really don't have much more to say on this album as a whole, it's lyrically in the toilet, whites vocals irritate me, you get have some solid drumlines and fun riffs when jack's not assaulting his poor guitar to get incoherent squeels and wahs out of it but thats really all you're getting from this album. 1.2/5 MTW No, I can't be arsed. Listened to it, hated it, moved on. - HF 1/5 xo Ive always been hit or miss with Jack Whites work in general. The White Stripes catalogue as a whole in my opinion is a great example of how limitations can bring out the best in a bands ideas and direction. This is an environment where Jack Whites creativity excels for me. This album is definitely in that grey area between the end of White Stripes and the start of his more experimental albums. Listening to this album after already hearing songs off of later works like Boarding House Reach (2018) it’s clear that he hasn’t found his niche yet in this album. There’s good stuff here for sure, but half cooked is the words that come to mind, missing pieces is an anticlimactic album opener in general but saved by a tekky keyboard solo that does enough to keep me involved. I could go through each song one by one but that’s kind of how the album goes start to finish, good ideas that just haven’t quite been dug into deep enough, although some songs are good, blunderbuss hits well, as does love interruption. But I’m not gonna come back to this sadly. 1.7/5 FTW

It’s fine but not essential listening. A bit of a weak effort actually. I find Jack White to be a bit of a one trick pony and his music is just milk pudding - sustenance but lacking in any real nourishment.

It just feels like to be an album you “must” hear before you die, it should introduce you to something new you can’t get elsewhere. And I’m struggling with what that might be for this album. “Imagine the White Stripes but at like 40% of the vitality?” “Blues rock with the production of 2012?” The songs themselves don’t really do it for me and then there don’t seem to be any historical or cultural reasons to hear this. Oh, okay, there it is: “I’m Shakin” is a fun 50s/60s revival. So, like, one song. Is there a 1001 Songs … project?

My opinon of Jack White, whether it be solo, or with any of his bands is that its always style over substance. Thats not to say he's not talented or that he can't write a good song, because he is and he can. Its just over styled and a forced element of "cool" is i ejected in every song, if that makes sense.

Combines the lack of teeth from 70s sorta rock with the dissonance of of 90s/00s without producing anything particularly interesting. Maybe I'm just not in the mood for it

Jack whites solo stuff never thrilled me. He certainly has a distinct solo sound, but most of the time it's not for me.

Sometimes speak singing does it for me. And sometimes it doesn’t. Jack White’s speak singing is in the latter camp for me.

Look, it’s not terrible, and the first couple of songs are good. But the longer it goes, the more bored I get. I liked this when it came out but I do not think it belongs on this list. There are better blues artists.

Jack White is marmite and I’m still gorged from Michelin stars.

I like a lot of the music here, but I really do not like Jack's singing on most of these songs. It just doesn't fit the tracks, like when you hear a cover of a song you like and the new singer's voice just sounds too different to enjoy. And I don't have anything against his voice, I do like it on The White Stripes albums. But I think the difference is that WS albums are very raw, minimal, and scrappy, qualities that his vocals complement a great deal better. The fuller, more layered tracks on Blunderbuss just don't work as well. I'll also add that a few of the songs felt too derivative of Jack's obvious influences.

Nothing really jumps out on this JW solo. Never quite as exciting as the WS. Has the feeling of being the soundtrack to a musical.

I don't necessarily dislike it...but, I don't necessarily like it either.

Jake white is a good musician, but he definitely can't sing

I thought I wasn't digging it bc the vocals aren't great, but it ended up fine enough. 2.4.

Not my favorite. Good for background music I guess, but he can’t really hold a tune very well. But I like the jazz-rock style and he’s not terrible, but he’s certainly not great.

I bought this album when it came out. I remember enjoying it. Listening to it today I found the music kind of irritating. Lyrics like “I want a love that will murder my own mother” (or something like that) a turn off. I guess I’ve moved on.

I think I finally figured out what it is about Jack White that I increasingly do not like - everything he does seems like an affectation and the more you notice it, the more you notice it, until the only thing you can see is him doing affectations. And that makes watching him an exercise in secondhand embarrassment.

Not really sure why'd you'd need to hear this before you die. It's not bad, but it's not very remarkable or memorable either.

A markedly more vapid version of his usual stuff with White Stripes. It’s still massively inkeeping with his normal style ie quite shrieky, irksome, ultra Led Zep derivative and with garbage mixing but it’s all just a bit below par and with not a single noteworthy track which makes this album more like Blanderbuss by Jack Biege.

This might be a tough listen. Personally, I never really connected with The White Stripes or any of Jack White’s other projects. Still, I thought I’d give his first solo album Blunderbuss a shot. Surprisingly, I didn’t hate it—but I also don’t think it’s essential listening. I’m honestly puzzled as to how it ended up on any “must-hear” lists. The album feels pretty basic overall, without offering anything particularly new or groundbreaking. There are a few decent moments scattered throughout, but nothing that truly stands out. Favourite track: Love Interruption – a rare moment of genuine intrigue. Least favourite track: Blunderbuss the title track was very dull. Album artwork: A moody, melancholic cover that suits the tone, even if the music doesn’t quite live up to it.

I ought to like this - all the ingredients are there: rock genre, lots of guitar, riffs, etc - but I don't. The voice isn't strong enough and grates, the riffs are weedy and theres no power or resolution in the music. It's very formulaic.. I didn't like the White Stripes for the same reasons.

First listen. Not been a fan of any of “The White Stripes” albums I’ve listened to before. This was not an exception, but I found it a little bit more enjoyable.

This is pretty much White Stripes, and like White Stripes, it just doesn't land with me. I have tried REALLY hard to enjoy White Stripes, but their music (like this album) always feels too busy and noisy to me. In some cases, it's the guitar (Jack), in more cases it's the drums (Meg) (or more specifically - the damn cymbals), and in even more cases, it's both. Even without Meg, this still has that busy noisy cymbal thing. Like several White Stripes albums, I've given this a fair shake, and I can only conclude that Jack and I are just not compatible.

I think I like what he did in White Stripes more.

I had to listen to this several times because it came across as a one-trick pony on initial listens. The first few songs are crunchy guitar-driven, piano-backed, and drum-backed songs that, while fun, were nothing that hadn’t already been heard from Jack White. The rest of the album becomes more unique as it embraces other styles, such as blues, country, bluegrass, and vaudeville/ragtime. I really like the songs that he sings with others, as they contrast nicely with White’s voice. Although the album is exciting and fast-paced musically, the theme and lyrics are dark. All songs are from the singer's point of view and focus on love, loss, abuse (physical and mental), jealousy, bad relationships, and being dominated. While the singer realizes their predicament, they don’t care to change anything in most instances. There are a few times when they recognize the harm and danger they are in and how it is holding them back, but they feel powerless to do anything. A few times, the singer calls others out for falling into their predicament but can offer no solutions. This album showcases Jack White's influence on prior projects and those that came after this album. Although he is talented, I like listening to Jack White in small doses, and this album doesn’t change my opinion, as it is what you would expect, just with a slightly different veneer.

I'm so back and forth on this one. First tracks were all ehhh but the ladder half so far is better. Strange, peculiar vocals with very theatrical instrumental and it's blended the best. The elements feel a bit out of place as do some of the songs. Namely On and on and on starts with like a smooth jazz opening and shifts to a soft piano with fuzzy vocals. It's kind of boring. I'd rather just listen to the instrumental lyrics don't add much. What is this string instrument? I don't think I like this.

It’s not bad, interesting sonically, but nothing reaches out and grabs my attention either. I’m not the biggest White Stripes guy anyway so that’s not a huge surprise to me.

Jack White can be hit or miss, and this album is a hodgepodge of many different styles... Blues, Rock, Soul, Country, Folk, he's got it all, a 5 tool player. But honestly, 3 good songs in "Love Interruption", "Sixteen Saltines", and "I'm Shakin'" and a shit load of filler.

Starts off strong. I dig it when it's stripped down and rocks. Not as much when it gets slow and orchestrated. Lots of different style going on here, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Back half kind falls off for sure.

This is a weird artist - at least as far as my musical tastes go. Some of the music is actually not bad and some is terrible. I can't think of anything to compare the tolerable bits to, but some of the parts I really don't like sound like intros to children's parables from the days of old. Vocally he sounds a bit like Robert Plant with his testicles dipped in hot water. Even more odd is the fact that he seems like he's singing quite clearly, but I find it difficult to understand. With music that I like, the understanding vocals part is easily skittered around. That is not the case here. I have to admit I've not listened to him enough to speak to the fact of how talented or not he is. Musically he sounds quite competent - it's just something I really don't care to listen to.

I don’t know, I wasn’t offended by this. Wasn’t sitting there hating it. But if this came on in a restaurant, it’d be music that I wouldn’t even notice and would have no reaction to because I’d forget what it sounded like immediately.

Squeaky clean, poster-boy pastiche of yesteryear rock styles. I've never been a fan of this stuff. A couple of nice tracks, and I like how he borrows from garage rock, psych rock, etc. within his blues rock palette. But overall I find the songs and the sound uninspiring. Maybe I'm not nostalgic enough for "good old fashioned rock n roll". 2.5*

2/5 Very inconsistent tracklist which has moments of melodic brilliance, more moments grating to the ears, and even more moments of sheer boredom. Not an enjoyable experience as a whole, with the production not great, sometimes actively bad, and White not acting as a particularly compelling lyricist at all. 4/10 - I did not enjoy most of these songs tbh. His voice was pretty annoying and I did not like most of the instrumentals.

So much talent. Brilliant producer, guitarist and keyboardist. But something critical is missing; it sounds like product instead of art. I think back to the White Stripes' Elephant (which I think is brilliant). Same voice, same musical inclinations and it FELT genuine. This, by contrast sounds like one clever idea after another just laid out as they arise, with no overarching vision, nothing to say, no effort at coherence. I wish he would collaborate more. Because all of that talent could use some critical feedback.

A whole lot of meh. . Props to him for finally expanding his instrumental palette, but I am perplexed why critics keep enjoying this shtick. It's like no one is brave enough point out that emperor has no clothes. The tracks "Love Interruption", "Freedom At 21", and "On And On And On" were bearable. "Love Interruption" frankly sounds like a poor knock off of a Robert Plant/Alison Krauss collaboration. Honestly, another Jack White driven album that no one needs to hear before they die. I would not be surprised if it comes off the list in further editions of the book. It gets a 2, instead of a 1 because Bob Ludwig mastered it.

Meh, mostly.

I don't really get it. I didn't know that Jack White had a solo album. I get that he's this rambling jangly blues rock and roll troubadour or whatever--and makes a lot of music that fits that mold and all of it is fine and kind of runs together. Is this essential? Along with other albums he's done as White Stripes? I don't think so. Just kind of background music, and a couple times I thought, "this album is still going?"

I liked Sixteen Saltines the most, it reminded me of the band Mindless Self Indulgence, but the rest of the songs didn't stand out to me. The songs had a similar feel with the consistent singing style and genre, but I couldn't get fully into the theme.

Listen, I like a lot of Jack White’s music, and this album is pretty decent. But I have serious questions of why this was included on a list of albums you NEED to listen to. My 2 star ratings are reserved for albums like this, where I don’t agree that it crosses the hurdle for inclusion. I think this list has a problem with its periodic revisions. There seems to be a need to include X amount of music from the past few years every time they revise it. Does this album help anyone understand the history of music or music culture generally? Does anyone look back, just over a decade, and think, “Yeah, that first Jack White solo album was MAJOR?” Nah.

I never liked Jack White at all. His bass "solos" and his voice annoy me a bit. A few songs near the end try hard to sound like the Beatles' "Abbey Road" but fail. I can appreciate Jack writing almost all of the album and there's a few good ideas. This album is a stereotype of indie rock. 2 stars for "Blunderbuss."

I got off the Jack White train right after the White Stripes, and this is kind of why: this album! It sounds like the White Stripes but with none of the vitality and charm. I understand he did different stuff later, which I might like, but I don’t care for this much.

I thought we were done with White Stripes. How many bloody records? They all have about 3 good tracks and a load of filler. I was personally well and truly done with them by the time this came out so I've never heard it, nor do I recall any of it from the radio. Freedom at 21 is the first track that's actively annoying. The best song is I'm Shakin' which is a cover. I think I did actually hear that one. The rest just slipped by really, unexceptionally. Eh, I don't hate it. But I don't like it. Blues rock is not my bag really, it has to be truly outstanding to grab me.

man, i tried to keep an open mind with this one but i just don't care about jack white. i loved a handful of white stripes songs back in middle school but since then, everything he does just seems steeped in pretentious art school tim burton vibes. the fans are no better - i think they just like that he looks like a cross between johnny depp and gerard way. oh yeah, the music. it was pretty dull overall and didn't make any impact on me. the lyrics were nonsensical at times, his voice is weirdly nasal, but I'll give him points for the varied instrumentation throughout. why is this on the list though favorites: sixteen saltines, freedom at 21

Even though I should like Jack’s music based on the attributes aligning with my tastes, I never have. Not even sure why. Most comes down to melodies I think. I’m either touched by them or not..never been by his. I gave the album another chance cause it’s been a minute. Same thing..no likey.

this sounds like white stripes b sides, which perhaps provides some clarity for why this list includes the lesser white stripes albums. i think that jack white is supremely talented, but it feels like he got famous for being a weird lil guy at a time when we didn't have enough weird lil guys and i can't help but wonder if he's chained to his schtick or if this is just really what he's after when he records for himself.

I remember not loving this album, but also not hating it. It just didn't feel noteworthy, and not a single song from it has stayed in my head since I listened.

Pretty good. Doesn't quite have the intensity of The White Stripes, but it is a technical masterpiece.

It’s possible there aren’t actually 1001 albums you need to listen to before you die. This was fine but definitely not groundbreaking/Earth-shattering/terribly special.

Eh I really just didn’t enjoy this album. At a lot of times the voice really bothered me- I can’t pinpoint exactly what it is but something swayed me away from liking it. I’ve heard worse but I don’t think I would listen again.

Super inessential; while Lazaretto is a lot more assured and less concerned with the White Stripes legacy, I’d argue Jack White (love him as i do) hasn’t done anything to land on this list since Consolers of the Lonely (which isn’t on this list).

It sounds like someone who isn't sure if they are in the 60s, 70s or 80s, and so is trying to interpret them all at once.

You got me noiivus. This is the type of album that's catnip to the audience of this website apparently... never seen so many 5 star reviews on the "top" section of the reviews. I liked the White Stripes album that I got previously more than I thought I would, so I went into this album with a slightly more open mind. I feel like the songs are crafted well enough, they're just not doing anything interesting to me, at all. If this was not "The First Solo Album by Jack White" there is no way we'd be talking about it now. Two Starz

Disappointed. Most was pretty bad and normally expect a lot. Was excited to have a jack white album and got let down.

It's not unpleasant but I find it unremarkable. It's really in the top 1001? Really? I feel like in 10 more years this will fall out.

It's better than I thought it would be when taking into account the Wiki write-up. Not as one dimensional as The White Stripes. I thought it had a bit of depth and variation to the songwriting. A high 2

I realize that the guy is somewhat of a musical genius. And he was really cool on a few episodes of American Pickers that I saw but this album just doesn’t do it for me.

Fun and groovy but not really sure it deserves a place on this list. loved the first track.

You have to hand it to Jack. What he lacks in musical substance his stylist makes up for with nifty hats. He is certainly a virtuoso of affectation. It’s always funny reading critics pretending the emperor has clothes lest they insult the kiddeos for their McMusic. Case in point, Love Interruption isn’t a mediocre Son of a Preacher Man rip-off. Nope, it’s a bluesy blues ballad that is gospel-infused Americana and country soul. Like George Carlin warned, “It's the same with ‘buttery’ and ‘lemony’ and ‘chocolatey.’ ‘Real chocolatey goodness.’ You know what that means? No fucking chocolate!” You know what, “bluesy” means? No fucking blues. Along with no gospel…no Americana…no country…and no soul. Jack might be able to passably parrot Robert Plant’s vocal style on a few tunes but his chops on guitar are laughably overrated. It’s one thing to mimic vocals and quite another to bend strings in a way that stands the test of time. I kept waiting for the guitar wunderkind to show up. I’m still waiting.

I tried... the album didn't peak any interest. I'm shakin' was the best song to me. Just some safe background music.

Tried to listen without prejudice, but it's hard. His voice is horrible and he seems like the worst guitar hipster in the world. At least this album has some bass on it. Still not for me.

I don’t really like Jack Whites voice, but the songwriting is good. A lot of it felt like filler, and many tracks were lacklustre but the highlights were amazing. Weep Themselves To Sleep is phenomenal. I think I’m not a big fan of this type of music but it’s alright.

Pretty ok. I like Jack White’s production sound but his songwriting has never done much for me. Most of his songs just make me want to listen to the artists he’s inspired by.

I like some of the stuff the White Stripes did so I came into this one expecting good things, but honestly the songs bored me. The first track on the album was good, it my attention fell off quick after that. It felt like checking your watch during a movie and seeing you still had another hour to go.

6/10 - Jack White doing his usual thing. Jangly guitar, duets, sort-of blues. Not awful. Again with the school days thing, bleh.

I've taken a look at the list of albums we're going to listen to, and I think it's pretty bloated. This album is a great example. Jack White has three albums on this list. Two from the White Stripes, and this solo album. That is two albums too many. White Blood Cells is five-out-of-five indie garage rock album of the early aughts. Between that album and this album, Jack White made a dozen albums. He has nothing new to say on this album. Basically the only people still interested in Jack White's music at this point have been fans for a long time, who would say, "He's still got it!" to practically anything he'd put out.

A certain departure from the raw and minimalist sound of The White Stripes, Jack White’s solo debut leaves a lot to be desired. First of all the vocals sound way of on some tracks, especially the ones with stripped-down production. Jack White is better at creating rock anthems, as shown with the songs "Sixteen Saltines" and "Freedom at 21,". However the electric guitar that soars on these tracks sounds really bad at times as well. Looking at the positives. One of the album's strengths lies in its versatility. Tracks like "Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy" and "Blunderbuss" incorporate elements of country and folk, adding a refreshing twist to the overall sound. Also the song-writing for most of the tracks is quite good. This album isn’t all bad, but the overall sound just does not sound good in my ears and that’s why the low score.

jack white is real eh for me. i don't think i enjoyed this as much as the two white stripes albums i've heard, and i thought both of those were average. this one was boring on the whole. i'll admit i'm not the biggest blues fan, but this in particular could not grab my attention. it was easier with the higher energy songs, but my goodness the low energy songs were rough. not for me.

Some tracks that I liked. Not really sure how to categorise the music here and maybe that’s the whole point. Maybe Jack White is trying to broaden his sounds to more than just bluesy garage rock. Quite unlike The White Stripes and it’s a bit more polished of a record.

Perhaps if I enjoyed Jack White's voice more, I might be able to examine his lyrics more closely. And if I enjoyed his guitar tone more, I might be able to pay closer attention his songcraft. But I struggle to do either. The melodies tend to follow the same template, eating up all the metric space available. The riffs are practiced garage and blues shapes, usually with a little twist to justify the publishing royalties, but not so much as to suggest he isn't part of a seasoned tradition. As a figure, I find him inscrutable, but singularly uninteresting. Meg was the interesting one in the White Stripes and it's significant that the songs that sound best here have him backed by female vocalists. This may even be what the lyrics are about - there is definitely something about women going on here - but I get the feeling the game isn't worth the candle. 1.5 That thing he does. Jack White, yet again, with a volley of absolutely worthless non-songs. The addition of competent musicians this time round makes no difference to the artistic emptiness of White’s shtick. 0/5

whiny misogynistic divorce-core trash. a little funny that from my initial read of "freedom at 21" was "wow, is *appallingly* misogynistic" which is what me listen closer so of course when i look at the wikipedia article jack white's response to this criticism was "no it's about *technology*". Sure bud. pretty much start to finish it's nails on a chalkboard singing over instrumentation that alternates between insipid and uninspired. shoutout to the pedal steel guitar on the title track which made me think of better albums.
