Reviews (page 9 of 11)
Hadn't ever listened to JW solo stuff that much. About what I expected. A decent sound but not all that long term listenable for me. 2.5/5
It's OK you know. He's always an interesting guy but I don't feel the need to listen to it again. Think I miss some early Ehite Dtripes rawness.
It was all pretty good but nothing stood out to me in particular. Wouldn’t mind hearing again but I likely won’t choose it.
I like Jack White’s music, I really could not say why. Shakin is the top of this album. But I really enjoyed all the variety of the music.
It’s OK
Jack White usually make pretty interesting and innovative rock songs and records. I think this fits that description. But it still wasn't... as good as I expected somehow? Maybe I was just not paying attention enough, but it kind of passed me by. I should probably give it another try, but don't have time currently, so it will have to be a 3.
Had only heard "Love Interuption" from this album before which is decent but not that special. It is actually quite a solid blues/rock album which happens to be overshadowed by the White Stripes albums. While it's not as good as the White Stripes it is certainly worth a listen if you are in the mood for it. "I'm shaking" was a new find which has that 00s garage rock revival feel to it. I also enjoyed "I Guess I Should Go To Sleep" which felt very Beatlesque. While not quite a 4 I still think it is a very good 3!
La portada mola per que porta un Ñordi gordo i negre pero no hi ha mucho mas. El tio no afina masa i te pinta de ser un rarito de turno. Crec que es rollo superestar de nicho en USA. Fedora peasant.
This is a solid record. By no means is it a must hear. Strange to be on the list.
He's definitely on the down slope from here but it's alright really.
Look, I love Jack White, everything he does, I think he, the Strokes and a few others were responsible for dragging us out of the butt rock of the early noughties. I listened to this album a lot, I'd jam along to Sixteen Saltines, the variety, humour and introspection of the lyrics and the breadth of styles shows why he's a legend. But this album is certainly not deserving of being in the pantheon of great albums. It doesn't present anything new, merely a re-packaging of the White Stripes and those albums present a much more distilled version of what he was trying to achieve.
Þetta er fínasta plata hjá honum Jack White.
Not really my cup of tea, although it was fine to have running in the background while I was working. Enjoyed Trash Tongue Talker though.
Jack's squeaky, scratchy, high-pitched voice is annoying over this pure indie album descended from gritty punk. Distorted but sparse guitar lines reverberate over simplistic drum beats. Melodic intrigue is added by the use of a keyboard/electric piano/rhodes around the crashing drums and guitars. A couple of slower, folkier, less 'noisy' songs are a welcome respite from the sharp, loud tone across the rest of the album, but Jack's voice doesn't have the same range as say Frank Turner or Dallas Green, and the high-pitched squeaky scratch doesn't carry those songs as beautifully as I would hope. Not really my cup of tea, but I can see why folks like it.
7/10 Highlights: Hypocritical Kiss Freedom at 21 I Should go to Sleep Sixteen Saltines Lover Interruption
Didn't live or hate this album. Some songs were definitely enjoyable
OK, again probably not my bag
I hadn't really listened to this album much. I do like other songs on other albums better, but as a whole album it was a good listen.
Ikke lige mig, men okay. Får nok ikke et genlydt.
Very 2000s rock, it's ok
He's ok, but i don't dig
I enjoyed this without feeling that I’ll return to it. One or two might find their way onto a streaming playlist - Love Interruption, Weep Themselves To Sleep - but it feels like someone flipping through musical styles with varying degrees of success. If I want to hear rockabilly, riff rock or country blues there are other places I’d go first. That said, you have to admire the way he can turn his hand to anything he likes and the willingness to experiment. It means it’s rarely dull, but the overall impression is Jack of All trades, master of none ⭐️⭐️👍🏼
Blunderbuss It’s funny looking back at the White Blood Cells and Elephant era. I loved those albums and went back and bought their first two albums which I also enjoyed immensely. They all still hold up. But I lost interest from Get Behind Me Satan onwards and have never felt much inclination to listen to any of Jack Whites solo albums or other projects and I don’t really know why. Some good songs and some good moments on a lot of songs. I like the fiddle and lap steel country blues touches throughout. Freedom 21, On and On and On and Take Me With You When You Go are the real standouts for me A good solid listen but aside from those three songs I’m not sure if I’ll think to come back to it and listen through again. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ok but didn't blow me away. Better stuff out there including stuff by Jack White.
Never heard of Jack White or his previous band before....enjoyed this album. Good morning listen.
Caterincă Nu știu dacă l-aș asculta de prea multe ori, dar interesant
Apparently I prefer Jack with Meg
its nice
3.5 Historically, my opinion of Jack White’s music has been that it’s good, but not great, and this album didn’t do much to change that. Admittedly, it did grow on me the more that I listened to it, and looking back now, I would say that I enjoyed most of the individual songs (especially with how diverse they were in sound and style), but still, I don’t think there’s any one moment here I would go as far as to call great. It gets close - Love Interruption is a really solid track with a catchy, twisted charm to it, Sixteen Saltines is a fun blast of punk rock energy paired with goofy lyrics, Hypocritical Kiss is an impassioned (and likely autobiographical) ballad about an ex-lover with bitter spark to it, and hell, there’s probably a good handful of other songs I could point to as having specific enjoyable qualities to them as well if I tried, but ultimately, there just isn’t anything here I would refer to as particularly unique or groundbreaking. That’s not to say that I think every album needs to break some sort of mold in order to be highly regarded, I totally get that some stuff just makes for good comfort food listening, but as far as that kind of thing goes for me, I just wouldn’t call Jack White a comfort food artist. If anything, I would call his music perhaps a bit self-indulgent - despite coming off mostly as mid-to-decent, I can’t help but get a pretentious vibe from the dude, like he seems to think he’s more of a musical mastermind and deeper than he really is. I definitely enjoyed my time with this album and would go as far as to say that I could see myself re-listening to it - or at least partially - but it also didn't really do a ton to expand my appreciation of Jack White or alternative rock as a whole. For what’s it worth, I’ll give it credit for this - the riff to I’m Shakin’ has been stuck in my head ever since I first heard it, though I still haven’t determined if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.
A few solid bangers here, but the drumming is so basic and uninteresting.
Nr. 124/1001 Missing Pieces 3/5 Sixteen Saltines 3/5 Freedom at 21 3/5 Love Interruption 3/5 Blunderbuss 4/5 Hypocritical Kiss 4/5 Weep Themselves To Sleep 3/5 I'm Shakin' 3/5 Trash Tongue Talker 3/5 Hip Poor Boy 4/5 I Guess I Should Go To Sleep 4/5 On And On And On 3/5 Take Me With You When You Go 4/5 Average: 3,38 Good, but I'm a little bummed I didn't like this more.
This album was better than I was expecting, but I still seem to like the rawness of The White Stripes more than Jack White on his own.
Fine musically. Not so good vocally.
The weird indie that I love. I learned Jack White is from Michigan - always love some Midwest representation!
Just alright. Talented musically, but the whinny vocals never worked for me.
this was pretty average 21st century rock stuff it was good and i liked it but i dont think i could really see myself listening to it again any time soon i think expectations were high also because i do love some white stripes stuff and there wasnt anything on here that was close to that apart from sixteen saltines which as i am typing it out thinking what is a saltine and why are there sixteen of them but yeah it was good but nothing special
This list of albums was made by someone with a particular taste in music.
This is a strong offering from Jack White, the classic White Stripes sound is still there, but this album is a bit more experimental with progressive folk, blues, and country rock. There's some tracks which come off really well and others which are a little forgettable. As always though Jack White has some incredible guitar tone and riffs.
Some pieces aren’t bad especially love interruption but not really my style anymore.
interesting tunes, don't think his voice performs well here and missing the energy of White Stripes. It's strange, his blues style voice should go really well with the softer piano but just not overly feeling it. 2.8
Estuvo bien. Me gustó la canción de 'Poor Boy'
Not as fun as The White Stripes, but this was still pretty good.
Decent. Giving me billy Joel vibes. Would maybe give another listen when I'm paying attention more.
- Only ever listened to White Stripes albums, not any of his solo ones before - Enjoyed it, a couple of really good tracks on this - However, not sure this necessarily fits this list? It's good but not certain that it's 100% essential listening - Fav songs: Freedom at 21, Take Me with You When You Go, Weep Themselves to Sleep
The best solo Jack White album still isn’t as good as the worst White Stripes Album.
3.5 For me this is a case of a sum is bigger than its parts. Collection of good songs, the quality doesn't really drop off, and were original compared to each other. If I listened to it a dozen more time, the rating would probably improve
Enjoyed it! Final track was as the standout to me.
If I had first listened to this back when I was more into The White Stripes I feel like I would have felt it was a step down without any standout tracks. But with a bit of distance from that I found the album was quite solid, there wasn't a song that wasn't interesting and enjoyable.
Talented musician, but not my style.
ganz ok aber die früheren White Stripes sachen sind einfach geiler
pretty nice album, nothing that stands out too much
Unfortunately, an average album by Jack White. Few great solos and weird an original guitar riffs, but otherwise it just sounds like a pop and boring version of his band. Disappointing.
Crystal clear production. Sometimes the harmonizing was a little grating for me. The guitar and specifically steel guitar was excellent. I felt like I was in 1850 antebellum south in a good way. Solid 3.
Fine album, right down the middle of the road
Jack White feels compelled in his songwriting skills to claim a record as his own. The style has his heavy blues vocal play and groove, garage-style lo-fi production, but with a more polished accessible sound with cleaner mixing and other tools like the gospel choir in "I'm Shakin". It's characterized by a remarkable run of strong tracks on the first half, followed by a less impressive but still admirable second side. Feels like a fuller, varied, over-produced White Stripes album with less memorable hits. Favorites: Sixteen Saltines, Freedom at 21, Hypocritical Kiss
Wild, rocking, thrilling. Jack White carries such an eclectic energy with him in every release he’s a part of. Not an every day listen, but very entertaining and a great live performer.
Wasn't digging some of it. Seems like good road trip/background music, but not something I would focus on. 3.5/5
I expected to like this more, but it was still a good listen.i liked the backend of this album more than the front, with Weep Themselves to Sleep and On and On and On.
Great music with a variety of styles, the only drawback here is that Jack's voice kind of wears on me as this goes on.
Not my go to, but not bad rock. I'd listen again.
Didn't know the White Stripes guy went solo. The more you know!
Still don't really care for Jack's voice or words
I wouldn’t have played this on my own, thinking it wouldn’t be my type of music, but they actually liked it more than I thought I would.
I'm a Jack White fan for the most part, but there's nothing here that he hasn't improved upon in his later albums.
Na ja.
its cool, theres some unique songs but nothing for the playlist
I'm a melodic, vocal line girly so of course my fav so far is love interruption. I like the piano licks on Weep Themselves to Sleep. Very groovy. Second listen through, enjoyed it more and appreciated lyrics more. Problem is a lot of albums really need more than one listen (not kraftwerk tho). Liked hypocritical kiss and the silliness of I'm shakin'
Bring back the White Stripes pls
I respect the music and I respect the vocals, but there was nothing catchy enough to bring me back to want to hear it again. It's almost like music for a movie soundtrack. You hear it but you don't care.
An enjoyable pop album
not what i expected, but okay
Pretty good. My first foray into Jack White's solo work. It definitely grew on me, but I can't say it's my favorite thing ever.
It’s ok. I think the tone of the white stripes better suits his voice
Feel like this is one of those albums that would be better live. Definitely one of the better rockish albums of the 2000s. This was my first Jack White album I’ve listened to fully and I was pleasantly surprised. It does seem to drift off in the second half for me though.
Fun rock. Nice variation through the album, from prog-ish to just groovy
I enjoyed, pretty badass songs that sounded like they could be used in epic movie montages, great songs for gaming.
Hate the first song, the rest of the album is okay
It's not the typical kind of music I listen to - I would not listen to it again.
3.5
Song: Sixteen Saltines I'm kind of conflicted. I didn't hate the song, but the "wall of sound" was unexpected and a little overwhelming. However, I really did like the guitar work and the bluesy, funky flavor. Overall, it was kind of reminiscent of a White Stripes song, and I do like the White Stripes, too. I don't think I'd skip this song if it came on, but I also wouldn't seek it out again.
Erster Eindruck: gar nicht übel. Irgendwie interessanter als White Stripes Alben. Vielleicht. Kenne kaum welche. Es läuft jedenfalls immer noch, das ist doch schon mal was. Ja, aber bis zum Ende muss ich das nicht hören. Höre aber bestimmt nochmal rein.
This book has an obsession with Jack White and whatever he does musically. This is one of three albums with Jack White on them that appear on this list and I had fairly low expectations for this one. I must admit, it was not too bad though. I had never heard Jack White's solo stuff and this is interesting, but probably not entirely notable in my opinion. Like I feel about other artists, I'm not sure what he's doing here that is so different from what he does with the White Stripes or separates him from other artists.
Missing Pieces: What a fun little doodly riff. Makes me nostalgic for 2012/2013. Jack ain't the best singer though haha. Sixteen Saltines: it got that riffs. Freedom at 21: The drums are so fucking cool and the little riff. Chef's Kiss. Love Interruption: Now this is a duet, love this shit. Blunderbuss: Now this is a little more folksy. I don't LOVE it but it's good. Nice little piano. Hypocritical Kiss: The ending is lovely with the piano. Bluesy af. Weep Themselves To Sleep: The ascending piano part is so cool. The piano in this song is so good. Jack's not perfect singing is kind of charming and fits. That little guitar solo is neat as heck. I'm Shakin': This sounds like a children's song all blues up haha. Love it. Trash Tongue Talker: BLUESSSSS, more awesome piano, the reverbed voice fits well. Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy: I don't love this track. Just doesn't hit for me for some reason. Eh. I Guess I Should Go To Sleep: This one doesn't really hit me either. More of a country feel. The piano breaks are cool though. On And On And On: I love the bass in this one. Just so groovy. Take Me With You When You Go: This definitely gives me Dave Brubeck vibes, but I'm here for it. Oh fuck, riff time! This shit is so good. Great closer.
I dunno. I just don’t connect with his music. I liked aspects of many of the songs, but they didn’t leave a lasting impression on me. 2.8
Interesting. Different music styles -- hard rock/country/blues/roots. I like the music but it's too broad. Feels showy and self-indulgent at times. Not a fan of Jack White (esp his vocals) but it's a good album overall. Would probably get into it after a few listens. 3.8
6.5/10
Tunes
Jack White albums are always fun, and this is a great break away into slightly more experimental material following some stellar output with White Stripes (with the weirder Icky Thump serving as a kind of gateway) An eclectic mix of consistently catchy songs, with Sixteen Saltines and the closer being the standouts, it’s a lot of fun but doesn’t quite hold up to the band’s strongest records or even White’s two following records in my opinion
51/100 Based on this scale: 1 star - 0 to 19 2 stars - 20 to 39 3 stars - 40 to 59 4 stars - 60 to 79 5 stars - 80 to 100 Freedom at 21 is really good and a few other numbers on the album are decent as well, but it's not without its formula.
i just got déjà-vu and déjà-vu talking about it. weird feeling. anyways, i liked some of this and hated the rest, so i’m not sure what to do about that. but i didn’t mind some of these songs they were really catchy and i liked them more than the white stripes album that i listened to. probably wouldn’t listen to it again but some songs from it for sure.
Moderner Rock, aber nicht mein Geschmack
its pretty, but empty, like candy or pop music.
Prefer the stripes, really.
3.25 stars Favourite songs: - Missing Pieces - Blunderbuss - Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy
Not bad, but not super memorable. It's a vibe that only Jack White has. I'll probably put it in the rotation, but only as background.
Sounds like Jack White. It's fine I guess 3/5
Some great moments, but ultimately too much of it is unfocused to reach the highs of his White Stripes work
Not as good as I remember it being. This was the last album I enjoyed he put out.
This was pretty close to a 4 but ultimately didn't quite make it. One member of my listening group did really enjoy this though and I can see what he likes about it. Definitely cool and original. It's also possible a bit more time would bring me around on this one from 'it's good' to 'I really love this'
Decent album but nothing special
It's pretty good. I'd give it 3,5 if I could.
Jack White played yeti season before his concert, and I watched one of my favorite bands (Geese) at third man records, so he has a great taste in music. However when it comes to his own music, in particular this album, it doesn't quite connect with me. In particular the song writing doesn't really stand out to me as being novel or exciting.
listening alongside some smashing pumpkins because i cant seem to focus on one thing today so far so cute, enjoyable its kinda generic but its not bad reminds me of something but i cant think what
sixteen saltines, weep yourself to sleep
Interesting fusion of rock subgenres, but not really my cup of tea off of first listen. Don't hate it though. Fav Track: Love Interruption
Track 1: bra keyboard solo. Alla låtarna är ganska lika. Weep themselves to sleep är en cool låt.
High 3. Solid.
I liked the bass in Sixteen Saltines and the drums in Freedom at 21 and both in I'm Shakin'. I liked him better when he was in The White Stripes. Maybe because Meg White's amazing drums hid the weird shaky thing that his voice does
Would listen again.
I really enjoyed about half of this, didn't like the other half as much though. Every time it dipped into country rock I groaned inwardly, but then there were peaks to match the troughs. I particularly enjoyed the progressive folk that showed up now and then. Overall there were definitely 2 and 4 star moments, so a 3-star review seems fair, even if pretty much none of this sounded like a 3 star album.
Well I've never listened to the White stripes I've been aware of Jack White's sound for years. This being my first experience with a full Jack White album It sounds about exactly how I would of predicted it to sound but still covering the amount of genres and sounds that he touches on throughout this album it is impressive nonetheless yet still very much safe sounding music. The highlights have to be his lyrics and anytime a guitar solo kicks in and gets wild.
Good!
Tämäkin parempi ku odotin. Loppua kohden vähä lässähti
Meh, great guitar, shit voice
A solid album but a strange choice for the list
White stripes are better
Gosto mais da guitarra do que do vocal. Melhor música é a faixa título do álbum.
I feel like a whole album of Jack White is too much. He's got some good songs on this album and he is a great oddball musician, but his unique sound gets a little too much after a couple tracks have gone by.
Jack White is a very talented musician/singer. But his brand of quirky, bluesy, Bo Diddly oldies is not really for me. 3 stars because there are some groovy tunes on the album like Love Interruption, Blunderbus, Hip (eponymous)poor boy, Take Me With You When You Go
Impressions: Noise + blues + rock. It was okay for me. Favorite tracks: Freedom at 21, Take Me With You When You Go Rating: 3/5
C'est pas non plus la folie faut arrêter
zzzzzz
It was enjoyable to listen to. I really haven't listened to any of his music besides his hits from the White Stripes. His lyrics made for an interesting and somewhat unpredictable path but was not bad. Even though it was enjoyable I still wasn't head over heels for it. I did like the steel guitar tho one of my favorite instruments fr. Perhaps I'll come back for another listen another day.
Solid but few standouts
Jack White and his unique vocals are fun
Meh, didn't blow me away
I usually find Jack White's raw blues rock to be fun. I may not have listened too closely but didn't find much different about this solo album. Could have done without the detuned player piano banging out chords for an entire song, but I guess that one was old West saloon inspired
Consistently good vibe to it, but I can't recall a single tune. Not bad instrumentation though.
Mostly fun. The influences really come through. The originality not so much.
Never heard it before. Really like the White Stripes, so this was expectedly good! 3/5
Ничего плохого
Good
Would be good live
This was an interesting, musically diverse album with top notch musicianship. A solid listen, if not a particularly memorable one. Fave Songs: Weep Themselves to Sleep, Take Me with You When You Go, Love Interruption, Trash Tongue Talker, Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy
"I eat sixteen saltine crackers then I lick my fingers" I'm a huge fan of Jack White's work with the White Stripes, and I'm aware that he was the mastermind behind most of those songs, so I was pretty excited for this album. T1-5 were very solid, but the second half of the album pales in comparison. T2- "Sixteen Saltines" gives us a nice, heavier rock sound that maybe a lot of us were expecting from White's musical style (playlist track), whereas T4- "Love interruption" is an acoustic ballad that is still very much rock n roll, but in a very different, more singer-songwriter way. Both these songs were great, but like I said, the second half of the album is far weaker, and because of that, I will have to give this album a 3/5
Good, very "rocky"
Just okay, too dramatic, takes itself too seriously I think
Good album, might listen again but I could skip some songs
A hodgepodge of things. All of which had music and words. White and his mates all appear to be very accomplished musicians, yet, none of what they presented made connection to me in any way.
I use to listen to the first three songs on repeat when I was 18, but other than that I didn't come back to listen to the full very much
Enjoyed it, but it almost mainly just made me wish I was listening to the White Stripes. I feel like maybe the artificial constraints of that band helped Jack produce better music.
I don't blame Jack White for wanting to do things besides Raconteurs & White Stripes. I do blame how long this list is for the fact that this super mediocre album is included.
Enjoyable. Wouldn’t go out of my way to listen, but certainly not bad.
It was okay. I've generally liked a lot of Jack's stuff with The White Stripes or Raconteura but this was just pretty average as far as his stuff goes. Enjoyable enough but far feom essential.
Not terrible but not greatq
Not bad
I liked it. Bluesy. Experimental. Good time.
It's fine. Some interesting and eclectic stuff on here. Not all of it works and at times it goes into country which I'm not into. I also think he's better with Meg White behind the drum kit. Still, there's enough good stuff on here to make it passable.
3.5
B- Missing Pieces 3 Sixteen Saltines 3 Freedom at 21 3 Love Interruption 3 Blunderbuss 3 Hypocritical Kiss 4 Weep Themselves to Sleep 4 I'm Shakin' 3 Trash Tongue Talker 3 Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy 3 I Guess I Should Go to Sleep 3 On and On and On 3 Take Me with You When You Go 3 Sabrina had me worried because she sighed, as usual, in disgust when I told her what the album was for the day. She said she hates Jack White. I go, that's the guy from The White Stripes right? She goes, "uhhhh". She didn't even know! Ha! What an idiot! Anyways, this was his first solo venture and comes right off his White Stripes glory days, so it was actually pretty good. It kind of just sounded like a White Stripes DLC. I'm sure his more recent stuff is sigh-worthy, I know his new look is.
Nice tunes in general, some tracks felt a bit and sorry for the word "cringe", happy or sad it works for any mood. appreciated his vocals.
it's...a little repetitive
Good stuff but needed a couple of outright banners to make my upper echelon.
Good album but perhaps I need another listen.
It was fine. Had some interesting moments. I might revisit.
People loved to rag on Meg, but it’s interesting how Jack never made anything solo that lived up to the White Stripes.
Yes, I ike it a modern (art/blues?)Rock. Maybe a 3,5 (rounding up or down?)
nice instrumentation, interesting lyrics
chill rockelis
Doesn't really grab you on the first listen, I don't love the sound mastering here, the best parts are too quiet. But if you give it another go there are some really fun bits of piano and guitar work that shine through. Really no stinkers on on this album, no 5/5s either. I'm at like a 3.5 on this.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this, but it feels a little like Jack White had his Jack White thing dialed in and could crank this kind of thing out ad infinitum.
Decent, not great. None of the songs jump out much but they're all pleasant enough to listen to. Pretty forgettable.
I like Jack White's music, but I don't think breaking apart from White Stripes did it (or him) good.
Pretty good - not usually my genre but I like Jack White’s singing voice. Favorite songs: Missing Pieces, Love Interruption, Blunderbuss, Hypocritical Kiss
He's talented but the album is not remarkable or outstanding in any way. I like the White Stripes better.
This is a strong offering from Jack White, the classic White Stripes sound is still there, but this album is a bit more experimental with progressive folk, blues, country rock and even some hip hop. Fans of the White Stripes and rock with a hard edge but intelligent writing will likely love this album.
Not bad, kinda like jack white
Udmærket 10’er rock, god sangskrivning
Not bad, pretty eclectic, knew one song.
It’s fine Definitely not his best work in my opinion but I like the variety in the songs Favourite tracks: Sixteen Saltines, Freedom At 21, Love Interruption, Hypocritical Kiss
Listened to few songs, didn't have enough time to listen... Maybe next time!
Pretty good but not great
Jack White at his best.
I honestly just think that Jack works better with the more simplistic style of the white stripes, like this isn’t bad and I respect the change but I don’t personally think this is an essential or anything. 3/5
Nothing special really
The album was alright. I did not know that Jack White went out on his own. It's rock music for the most part. I don't see myself seeking this out again but my ears didn't bleed on this one. I will round up.
come si come ca
Jack is all right.
Good rock but not up to his White Stripes standards
alrightq
Fine
There were a couple songs I liked, but a lot of it was just the same song.
Honestly I liked the first two songs but it's kinda mid
2010 Jesss Paras soundi rock 👍👍 heh... White stripes eri asia niillä pysyy 1 tähti jos tulee..
okay
Enjoyable, always like a bit of Jack White and his various projects.
elegant composition nice vocals. unique sound.
More interesting and dynamic than White Stripes but also somehow a little forgettable? Probably deserves another listen sometime.
When I think about Jack White and after listening to this album, I feel that I am listening to a great showman. And having seen him live last year, that assessment is reinforced. Lots of high drama and attention seeking noise. It's sort of the Barnum and Bailey of modern music where Jack White is the ringmaster and everything revolves around him. In that sense, I find the music selfish and contrived for likes.
"Jack White. A 40-year-old bully tried to fight the 35-year-old nerd. It might get loud, but it might also get really really sad and pathetic. Jack white is basically Billy Corgan’s dumb ass zero t-shirt in human form.” The I'm Shakin' track sounds too much like a Black Keys ripoff to be Jack White ... C'mon now... Regardless, this is a respectable twang-induced follow up to all the White Stripes work. Blunderbus, Sixteen Saltines and Love Interruption are the big winners on this. The balance is forgettable.
White stripes without the stripes pretty 5/10
Ok for Jack white at least.
average length, slightly boring, the white stripes are a 1 hit wonder. trash tongue talker
At times derivative but White overcomes these moments with a charismatic presence, great melodies and high level musical competence.
This album is fine. Jack White is fine. The White Stripes are important, but his solo work just feels like treading water. There are some nice moments and his guitar work is always great.
I'm a huge White Stripes fan but haven't gone much into Jack's solo career, and i'm glad this site finally got me to give this one a chance. I don't think I can give it too high a rating right now, but I enjoyed the listen. He just knows how to write a damn good rock song. His voice still sounds as good as it does on any TWS album, with just some better production than back then. Will be worth revisiting in the future.
3.5/5 I wasn't as taken by this album. Maybe I need to listen to it again and "read the album" as it's playing because the lyrics really sold me last time.
I thought this was pretty good. I had a good time. I'm not sure if I'm going to return to this sound, I just don't fetishize this sound in the way that Jack White clearly does. The songs are good, but they don't really captivate me other than the opening few. 3/5
I usually don't care for Jack White or The White Stripes. I enjoyed this more than others though. I plan on revisiting Weep Themselves to Sleep, Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy, and Take Me with You When You Go. But there's not enough songs that interest me for me to warrant a 4.
Original, creative, cool, musical genius. Screams Jack White. Either you love it or hate it. I'm somewhere in the middle. Good listen. Prob won't go back for any re-listens.
Quite a distinct voice and a good listen. 3*
Not bad.
This album was fine. Not something I’d seek out or listen to again, but I didn’t hate it. Standout tracks were “Love Interruption,” “Weep Themselves to Sleep,” and “Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy.”
Fine
Better than I thought it was going to be but not a patch on The White Stripes
Solid, kinda interested why this was chosen. I have to assume there’s a White Stripes album somewhere in here then. And there damn sure better be some Jack Black up in here
Alright modern blues rock. Doesn’t really have a unified sound like the White Stripes, though, and kind of forgettable. I like ‘Sixteen Saltines’, though.
3.75
Best Song: Love Interruption. The most interesting song on the album, lyrically. Worst Song: I'm Shakin'. I'm sorry, but Jack White just cannot sing the blues. Overall: I actually found this more palatable than his work with The White Stripes, probably because each track felt a bit more coherent and polished than the punctate little blitz tracks he makes there. And I do have to give him credit for his ability to write a catchy riff.
Before the maxed-out production and extremely loud, over-the-top tracks, Jack White made a nice and simple rock LP that spoke from the heart. This one veers into the neo-Delta blues territory a la The Black Keys, but keeps things distinctly within the Jack White wheelhouse with his signature blend of pitch-shifted guitars and acidic lyricism. Not every track is a winner, but the sheer simplicity and genuineness (especially in the softer acoustic-driven pieces) win major points on heart alone.
This grew on me as the album went on. For the first few songs I thought it was just the usual Jack White nonsense, without the White Stripes beats, but it proved to be slightly better as I got into it.
Credit to Jack White for knowing what he wants. The man has a concept in mind, from music, to packaging and presentation, to live performance, and assembles it all into a cohesive total in a way that almost no one else is doing these days. I enjoy the songs, but not in a way that I immediately gravitate towards repeat listens though. And isn't that sort of the end goal? This is a record that I admire more than I actually love.
PREFS : Missing Pieces, Sixteen Saltines, Freedom at 21, Blunderbuss, Weep Themselves To Sleep, Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy, Take Me With You When You Go MOINS PREF : Hypocritical Kiss
wasnt bad but some of jacks stuff can get to you after 30 mins hes talented but not wide ranging
Always have time for jack white
Yes it's very listenable, yes its Jack White excitable yelping over the blues. So business as usual without Meg. He seems to have done ok for himself.
Less quirky than White Stripes, more focussed and "mature" songs with good singing, guitar riffs and piano. High 3, might be as good as a 4 after multiple listens.
Writes great riffs. Can't always turn them into good songs
Not amazing nor bad
he just hasn't worked out what it is he does post white stripes. the guy can write some killer riffs and still writes a decent song, but he's clearly got too many interests to be as focused as he was in the white stripes days so as a result this album is a bit of a mish mash and way too busy. there's some really good songs on here but most of them would have been done better in the stripped down white stripes style. i completely understand that that format had reached its conclusion and any more white stripes music would have lessened the legacy but he's writing the slower ballady songs (about half this album) in the same way. they're written as if it was the bloke and his ex wife singing something heartfelt and vulnerable and then he's whacked a load of extra instruments and singers on to it losing the point of the song. and to add insult to injury some of the experimental guitar sounds bits end up sounding a bit matt bellamy.
(Verse 1) In a world where height is grand, Two friends stand tall, hand in hand. They share a home, they share a dream, Living life together, quite the tall team. (Chorus) Tall and Tall, they reach for the sky, Side by side, they're always high. Through laughter and troubles, they'll never fall, Watch the sitcom of "Tall and Tall." (Verse 2) Their apartment, a world of fun, Furniture small, but friendship won. Bumping heads on every door, Tall mishaps leave them wanting more. (Chorus) Tall and Tall, they reach for the sky, Side by side, they're always high. Through laughter and troubles, they'll never fall, Watch the sitcom of "Tall and Tall." (Bridge) With hearts of gold and humor bright, They conquer life's challenges with all their might. Together they stand, towering tall, A friendship that's unbreakable, never to fall. (Verse 3) In the comedy of their daily grind, Tall and Tall, laughter you will find. From the basketball court to the comedy stage, Their adventures bring joy, no matter the age. (Chorus) Tall and Tall, they reach for the sky, Side by side, they're always high. Through laughter and troubles, they'll never fall, Watch the sitcom of "Tall and Tall." (Outro) So join their journey, come along, With Tall and Tall, you can't go wrong. A sitcom that's funny, heartwarming and tall, Their friendship, the greatest gift of all.
Should listen to it again
It's a great blues album and it is also totally forgettable.
One of the issues I have with this poll is that there's a natural preference towards more recent albums (mainly due to the fact most people know them rather than any old dead musician from 50 years ago). I like Jack and his 'sister' but this isn't awe-inspiring and revolutionary. It's good but not as good as the score indicates.
It’s fine. But I prefer the music Jack makes with The White Stripes.
Rating: 6/10
I'm not typically one for blues type music, but Jack White definitely has a way of making it enjoyable here; he really just seems to have a lot of fun with the music he makes. Nothing here is one note, either -- White plays with a lot of different bluesy sounds and keeps things fresh from track to track. Ultimately, during a time period when blues music was not "en vogue", White finds a way to make it so. This was an enjoyable listen, but not groundbreaking for me.
I actually had him on my Spotify blocklist, hahaha. If I recall, I just didn't care for his new stuff, and Spotify kept putting it on my Discover playlist, so I decided to block him. This old stuff is good, even though I'm not particularly crazy about his voice. But the songs are good. I especially dig Sixteen Saltines, I'm Shakin', and Take Me With You When You Go. The album is good background music. Listened through it twice, while house hunting in Limsa Lominsa's Mist residential area.
Most of these tracks are pretty good. Others are self-indulgent and more than a little boring.
I do t think this is his best album, I have enjoyed other of his solo albums more. Songs became more generic as the album goes along and I just wanted to swap to Lazaretto 5/10
Täysin uusi tuttavuus ja tykkäsin kyllä. Pyörähti kolmesti läpi päivän aikana ja jokaisella kerralla löytyi aina jotain uutta tartuntapintaa. Pitää tutustua paremmin.
I’ve heard this album near the launch date. I see the value of the well executed accords but the vocals and the lyrics don’t get me. Great technique but lack of soul.
3.7 - Liberated from the self-inflicted austerity of White Stripes and the nay-saying Meg White, Jack can explore a fuller sound. I especially love hearing him on the piano. Some catchy funk-blues songs on here including “Sixteen Saltines”, as well as the title track.
Jack White at his best? No. Jack White being a tremendous version of himself? Hell yeah! Great album, thoroughly enjoyed despite expecting disappointment. I love the White Stripes (but is that just because I’ve a crush on Meg?) and dig all their records so why was I so scared of Jack’s solo stuff? This is excellent and I’ll defo dip into his catalogue!
One of those where you look at the suggestion, raise a quizzical eyebrow and ask "Seriously?" Actually listening to it - it isn't actually bad. Seems like White has tried to put a bit of swing into it. Don't think I'll be going back to it in a hurry.
first time listening favorite i’m shakin
First half carried, but I enjoyed this one.
I like Jack White, it was alright. Would probably listen again.
Respect to him for his success in an age where his area of music is underground, but it’s just not a sound that excited me.
Decent rock album that lacked one or two stand out songs
Vibes of rag time blues with decent drum and bass, a marked change from the White Stripes mixture of tortured genres of meaningless sound. I liked some of this album, whilst other tracks completely gridnded me, but to be fair I could listen to the decent tracks multiple times. It's an OK middle of the road album, but nothing stand out about it, other than its a stepped change from the White Stripes.
Didn't enjoy this album as much as I thought I would. Jack White doing saloon rock. I mean, it's enjoyable, but I feel like it's lacking alot of the punch that The White Stripes has.
Very curious to release a misogynistic album at the height of the #metoo movement. It’s a good thing that Sixteen Saltines slaps like it do.
jack white leans i to white stripe fuzz and furor, makes a bad cover (read: not good), and gets us ready for stupid voice affects in future releases. listening to this after listening to what hes released in the late teens and early 20’s of this century makes this album seem alright. he can still rock for sure, but he is letting the cheese out.
Solid album all around. I must admit I prefer the White Stripes albums I’ve heard to this-it was technically quite good and some of the songs stuck out (I wasn’t paying attention to titles) but there weren’t any moments that really blew me away, although nothing awful either. Definitely a recommend for people into that 2000s type rock music, since it executes that vision well. Just not enough of an evolution from TWS music for me to be floored in any way by it.
Good album, but uncertain why it's in the list.
HOO nostalgia blunderbu$$¥ surprisingly good for what i remember. i remember this fondly but always find jack white and music like it to be comparible to eating food without seasoning or coffee without caffeine - it leaves something to be desired - you are still left hungry new production will always be terrible, but jack a disciple of john bonham has learned some feeling for actual rythm and his version of "im shaking" is superb. "spiked heels make a hole in a lifeboat" new ways to make amusing digs at the opposite gender will always tickle me falls off at the end. not bad wee record
Enjoyable for me, but didn't reach the next level.
It was ok
mid and boring
2/5 not for me
Ok
Jack White is very serious about music. No smartphones at his shows. Lots of rules about authenticity. The blues, properly understood. You can feel all of this on Blunderbuss — the weight of a man who needs you to know he means it. The problem is the album itself is scattered. Blues rock, country, piano ballads — it moves around without landing anywhere. "Sixteen Saltines" is genuinely good: mean riff, real momentum. The rest didn't stay. 2/5 — takes itself seriously. I didn't.
I don't need to hear anything more from Jack White. It isn't good. It holds no interest.
Didn't really resonate with me
Talented and well known axe-man proves he isnt a one man band via first solo release....without checking I can assure you he would have used the same formula for 2nd album and it flopped
Ill be so honest, I dont really remember anything about it. Seemed like there were a few good songs/ moments but I cant recall 90% of it.
Energetic, but vocals and production make it feel a bit amateur.
i feel like ive heard similar albums to this, ie i can’t think of any standouts here. i feel a bit sad by how underwhelmed i felt listening to this because i thought the album cover was cool
I like a bit of Jack White in small doses, but a full record of the same sounding stuff gets old after about 2.5 tracks.
Pretty standard '10s alt rock I think, I was surprised to enjoy the more upbeat songs on this one. Highlights: "Blunderbuss", "Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy", "Take Me With You When You Go"
Jack's knack for using the studio as an instrument is vastly underrated (because of that other raw little band he was part of), and it all began here. How the hell he gets that crackly distortion tone is one of the great mysteries of the modern age. Call me crazy, but I think I prefer his country stuff? The subtlety gives him more room to breathe as a player. I also realized while listening that, although the instrumentals are always off the chain, his songs aren't really ABOUT anything...that was probably the first clue that he'd be a bad visual artist, lol (God bless and keep yee).
Uma grande inovação na carreira do Jack White, mas nada de realmente novo no mundo da música. Não surpreendeu.
Meh
Not bad, but definitely one of the least interesting Jack White works
Yeah ok whatever
Dude fuck this guy's voice fr. Why is he doing that on Freedom at 21. Stop. This is the closest thing to a 1 I've heard, but the instrumentation is just good enough to save it. Hated this more than anything we've had yet but I have to recognize its merits.
Tällä levyllä oli ihan hyvää kitarointia ja rosoista meininkiä. Aika tasapaksua kuitenkin.
I am not immune to Jack White's slick, pasty blues rock charms, but I am also acutely aware that he made much better music before and after this album. It's not bad, per say, it just feels a bit stiff and constrained. He gets weird, and he tries out all sorts of styles, but there's a point in which it all blends together: not like Pet Sounds, more like Kings of Leon (!). Maybe it only reads that way because I know Jack is capable of his own Pet Sounds. I can't give much grief here: the album has it's moments, it's never abrasively bad or anything. And besides, you'd be a bit disenfranchised if your cousin / ex-wife / drummer let you out on your own.
Iwie relativ kurze Songs, die mich jetzt beim durchhören auch nicht wirklich gecatched haben
Can't stand Jack Whites singing style.
Yeah. No.
I don’t think I know Jack White, and at first I didn’t think it was anything special, but it started to take on more and more of an Elton John vibe, so I’ll give it 2 stars after all…
Jack White is pretty hit or miss for me, and I found this album pretty boring overall without many standout tracks.
not as good as Joni Mitchell’s Blue
I’ve never understood why this is so popular every other record I’ve heard by him is better. This is very mid level middle of the road rock.
its no white stripes
Just a bit ehh, not as exciting as White Stripes
Kinda mediocre.
The most interesting things he made were rooted in guitar and sounded like they were bashed out in a day so no this overproduced piano album does not whet my whistle.
I’m not keen on the white stripes but I think I prefer this, still not really for me but definitely a couple of listen-able tracks
Cool musicality, voice and lyrics are just cringe.
Don't like only-instrumental musiv
Was never big on Jack White or White Stripes Best: Love Interruption Worst: Sixteen Saltiness, I Guess I Should Go To Sleep
Meh.
Blunderbuss is Jack White's debut solo album. I probably will not like it because I never liked his voice. I did not really like any of the songs. I thought the music was okay to good, but the vocals do nothing for me. Overall, if you like White's former band The White Stripes, then you will probably love this album; it is literally the same as all his previous work. The album incorporates blues rock, folk, and country soul. 5/10.
Sounds like Jack White but less rock-y than I expected. Overall it's fine to listen to but nothing special.
Love hearing Azar’s drumming when she’s allowed to let loose, but White is just kinda...there’s always been something imitative about his entire deal, a cover band all but in name, and he simply hasn’t recovered whatever made the early Stripes songs stand apart.
whatever man. title track and weep themselves to sleep are cool i guess but i'd honestly just rather listen to the bands he's ripping off
