Reviews (page 11 of 14)
Similar to the movie of the same name, a fun way to spend time but doesn’t feel essential.
Man, that was some good Beatles. Reminds me of my mum. I miss you Mum. Three stars.
Repeat listen
Not my favorite Beatles album, but certainly a good one with some classic songs and a great overall sound.
I'm just... not that big on The Beatles. Obviously their incredible contribution to music as a whole is appreciated, and the music is okay. A Hard Day's Night and And I Love Her stood out, but the rest just sort of blends into each other.
Not their best. Maybe their worst but still better by miles than anything by The Beach Boys so.
Surprisingly very polished for the times. Clear sounds and melodies. It almost has this classic american ballad structure to the songs and the way the playlist is built. Nice and eays going album, with no much that stumbles in the way apart from the almost non-stop “giddy up” feeling, one song after another. Overall, smooth listen with great bangers. 7.1/10
Immense, tremendous respect and such. Don’t need to go out of my way to listen to it again, rather listen to it than purple rain I guess. Best tracks are A Hard Day’s Night and Any Time at All. Low three star
Yeah, this album isn't bad at all, but it does feel like the advent of pop. Don't get me wrong, I love the Beatles, but I think this album kind of blends into their discography, aside from the two biggest hits.
It's fine. The Beatles are massively overrated (which is not to say they're bad). Their earlier stuff sounds better on average (to me), but has less variance - so the best of the later stuff is the best overall. This is an earlier album, full of twee love songs. It's dated and seems kind of uninspired, but I can't deny they execute well
Having mostly only listened to the Beatles’ later songs, I was so surprised by the lyrical simplicity of this one. It’s so much more similar to The Everly Brothers’ album I listened to yesterday than I would have guessed!
I know, it is the Beatles and there is probably a reason this album is in the list, but this is far from the most interesting if their albums.
I appreciate the distinctive jangly guitar and harmonies. Lots of catchy and familiar songs, but not something I would choose to listen to these days. 'I'll Be Back' was my fave track.
A couple of well known bangers, but otherwise pretty dated Brit Pop. Love the Beatles but this may be their least interesting album.
Very poppy. Did the Beach Boys get inspired by this sound to make Pet Sounds? (Answer- no, but "Pet Sounds" was inspired by a later Beatles album, "Rubber Soul"). Halfway through first listen- the instrumentation is there, but the sound (personally) for me is not. I UNDERSTAND in context this is a good album and WHY it is, but it's just a little too jingle-jangly for me. 3rd listen- lowkey growing on me. Very catchy. Can’t Buy Me Love makes me want to put on my spurs and jangle. Final score- 3.5 rounded down to 3. Would definitely listen again and it grew on me but don’t know if it’s at 4 level yet.
There’s nothing wrong with this, it’s perfectly good but I’d reach for later Beatles albums before this one and probably the Red album if I wanted to listen to this era Beatles. It’s pretty side 1 stacked too but there are a few bangers on here though in _Can’t Buy Me Love_, _And I Love Her_ and my fave, the title track
Had some decent tracks but nothing incredibly "must listen". Still it's the Beatles so the good ones are still quite good.
Not among my favorite Beatles albums - there are a few timeless hits though.
Nice. A bit too light for me, everything feels very old-timey, minimal guitars and all, but a bunch of good tracks.
Da e litt for langt mellom høydepunktene
5/10 Top 3 tracks: 1. Can’t Buy Me Love 2. Hard Days Night 3. Any Time At All
Decent but still not my cup of tea
Good
Good songs with great vocals and amazing vocal harmonies. Especially Lennon's voice is really good. Songs have some interesting twists and turns. Unfortunately the songs have that bubble gum pop feel that I'm not too keen to and production isn't that great in today's standards (I'm sure it worked great in 60's radios). Also lyrics are somewhat generic pop lyrics. Better Beatles albums are still to come.
Dated sound, still timeless songs. Surprisingly, I was least engaged with the bigger singles.
It was okay. Not my favorite era of Beatles music but there are a few songs i do genuinely like.
I was delighted when I got a Beatles album, but soon realized this is FAR from my favorite one of theirs. Fun and catchy, but a bit too samey.
I like the beatles but this album was a little underwhelming for me
Another Beatles album. It's what you'd expect from the Beatles. Pretty middle of the road, this one. Catchy 60's pop music.
Far from the Beatles' best, their early stuff is kinda whatever, this is one of the best of this era though
not their best
I found the lyrics pretty simplistic but the music and the harmonies were enjoyable. It's hard to appreciate this album when so much of music thereafter has been influenced by them so it doesn't really "sound" groundbreaking anymore
Eh. It was fine. Sounded like 1960s popular music. It was nothing remarkable.
Hmmm classically good songs
The Beatles have significantly better albums, but this is still good
Many on here are better than the hit songs that got repeated playtime.
barely listened to the beatles before apart from their most popular things (cuz i'm biased obviously), still don't fw them so much but it's great weekend lousy breakfast cooking music
This is #day300 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… my second Beatles album so far, making me wonder if I'll be getting them in order of release, since only two weeks ago I got With the Beatles. While this one follows a similar pop pattern, it feels a little more diverse, though not to the extent that becomes clearer with Rubber Soul. It's also kind of less cheesy than With the Beatles, but not too much. At least there's one of my favourite songs of theirs, "And I Love Her," and I also like "I Should Have Known Better." This is a strong 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day301.
A good album, but it sounds like a product of its time. Definitely influential, but I prefer other Beatles albums more
Good album Overshadowed by other Beatles albums
One of my lower ranked Beatles albums.
sorry, aber es ist halt einfach soooo langweilig... I love my girl, I miss my girl, I work hard for my girl, my girl is the one....
Honestly, if this album was by any different band, no one would bat an eye. But here we are, one of the greatest records of all time (critics) and one of the most boring boysband with uninteresting songs (me). It gets better on their subsequent albums, but A Hard Day's Night is a work in progress.
Like many early Beatles records, I'm just not very impressed by most of this. I will say, the popular tracks on here are well worth listening to if, for some reason, you've ever bothered to question what the opening chord was on Hard Day's Night. There are also some wild chord progressions on here for 64. If I Fell is a great example of interesting songwriting that the band would explore much further down the road.
I never got the Beatles. And since they're so big, I always thought there'll be time to dive into it. This album though, it ain't it. At the very least it's an easy, fun listen, but that's not a very high bar.
Non memorable album from the legends.
There's some great stuff here and some filter. I guess pretty meh for the Beatles.
Aha! The Beatles are back, after a long pause. This is one of the album covers I studied intently in college when I was trying to learn to ID each Beatle from pictures. It took me a while just to get that all of the ones in each row are the same guy. Of course, now I know that they're George, Ringo, John, and Paul, from top to bottom. :) I actually watched this movie for the first time last year, and it was just as old and boring as I feared. But the songs are OK. Actually, on the Beatle scale, this is one of my least favorites. Still short and poppy, but no songs that I'm super into. (By the way, when we had Rubber Soul, I said I thought that was my favorite Beatles album, but it's actually Beatles for Sale, which possibly isn't on here. I feel like a lot of artists on this list have albums I like much more than the ones that are on the list! But maybe I just didn't get to those ones yet. We shall see.) Anyway, I'm stuck between a 3 and 4 for this. It's better than the average album but not as good as the other Beatleses I gave 4s to, so a 3 it is. Sorry, Beatles. Highlights: 'A Hard Day's Night', 'Tell Me Why', 'Any Time At All'
3/5
I feel like there is a reason everyone knows the same 10 Beatles songs.
-a classic. can’t hate. for supposedly being on the bottom half of Beatles albums, I thought it was really solid. maybe nothing groundbreaking or incredible by their standards, but it established their sound and had a few bangers -I really wanna do a full Beatles discog run tbh, my opinion is subject to change for better or worse -Favorites are I’m Happy Just To Dance With You and Can’t Buy Me Love
6/10
A couple head-boppers, but we all know the best stuff comes later.
Always have time for The Beatles. Prefer compilations more than full albums generally.
A Hard Day’s Night may kick off with one of The Beatles’ most iconic and energetic tracks, but the rest of the album struggles to live up to that. Aside from the jangly charm of the title song, much of what follows feels fairly uninspiring. It's clear they were still in their early pop phase here - quick, catchy tunes with simple structures, but not much of it leaves a lasting impression. The more I explore The Beatles' catalog, the more I find myself questioning their untouchable status. There’s no denying their influence, but this particular album doesn’t do much to back up the hype.
Decent album just not enough to it, probably the worst Beatles album to date. Mediocre. 2.5/5 (3/5)
Standard mid 60s fare. Better than most. But still had that bubble gum pop sound. 3.5
High high quality pop but other than the title track and Can’t Buy Me Love nothing sticks long in the memory. Can’t necessarily fault it but can’t imagine returning to it.
some classics! Is it evil if I give it 3 stars? I feel like it's an album of songs with a similar flow, not doxxing but not drawing me in mega you know.
Was a fine album.
Pretty bland by Beatles standards. It's early and it feels like it. It feels like the Beatles are convinced that if they work together they can be more than the sum of their parts. This is well polished and they show glimpses of what they would become.
I gotta say this is a really basic Beatles record. Sure the first track is a classic but the rest of it is pretty boring. I don't know what the chronological order of everything Beatles is but this has to be an early one right? There's none of the good stuff after they started getting more famous and went to India and whatnot. Don't get me wrong - they're good 60's pop songs, better than all the imitators, but that's basically it. I'm assuming this was innovative at the time. This is maybe just due to the rep but I expect a lot more out of the Beatles than this. This is an average album.
Heard this a lot in my youth, most of the songs came back to me. I always liked the boyband Beatles more than the acid laced Beatles. Coming back to it's wild that all of these songs are only memorable for the lyrics and I couldn't remember any of the guitars/drums. They are mixed out so hard. Massive at the time, kind of hokey looking back, it's fine.
'A Hard Day's Night', 'And I Love Her' and 'Can't Buy Me Love'; great tracks. The rest, not so much. Not one of the Beatles' stronger albums. This doesn't stretch to much more than a 3/5 for me.
Classic early Beatles. Great tunes but doesn’t compare to their masterpieces.
Not my best Beatles but goood
The Beatles sound a lot better once they discovered drugs.
Title track shows their potential but too much of this album is forgettable.
Can’t Buy Me Love and the title track stand out. The rest vary between good and filler. I know this is historically significant for its timing with the Beatles’ US invasion and Lennon-McCartney authoring all the tracks, but I feel like this album could be sacrificed to make room for another groundbreaking sound.
I know it’s critically great, but not my style
Early Beatles albums are so fresh ! Unbeatables vocal harmonies, inventive melodies...However, I like this album less than the others: too many ballads, no cover (the Beatles are a great cover band) and especially no Ringo tune !
Many average tracks, but the few big hits are worth a 3-star rating for this album. Can't buy me love of a 4th star despite a hard day's night... ;-)
My mom’s favorite album right up there with Claude François and Sheila, and probably the only time Ringo Starr ever looked halfway decent in photos. Not a single ball hanging out … after a hard day, no smashing things, just a hug and it’s all better. With lyrics the same level than 2be3, it somehow ended up shaping rock history more than the Kinks ever did. I guess it was just easier to twist to this while screaming in a plaid skirt and a turtleneck. Simple and efficiently crafted.
The happy go lucky love song era of the Beatles is, admittedly, my least favorite. I realize that it was monumental in its contribution and still unrivaled in its popularity. But that doesn’t change the fact that it isn’t what I need from them. The songs are creative, brief and to the point, and the harmonies are on point though.
The first of what I'm expecting to be a myriad of Beatles albums on this list. Can't say this was the one I was expecting to hear first. Never been in love with The Beatles, but it's hard to deny their influence, so it'll be fun to hear some of their early work. Never heard this one in full, though I do recognize a few tracks. I don't expect to have my mind blown, but I'm hoping for a pleasant and easy listen. A Hard Day's Night Decently catchy little tune. Has some good melodies and a solid vocal performance. Does a lot right, feels like a textbook example of a mid '60s rock track. Decent. 3.5/5 I Should Have Known Better Don't really like this one. The individual elements (guitars, vocals, harmonica) sound very disconnected from each other. Don't like the vocal effect. Through modern eyes the writing sounds a bit basic, though this is the Beatles who sort of invented what "basic" is. Ends up being a bit boring. Did not like. 2/5 If I Fell Lovely vocal melody. Has some great harmonies. A pretty cute love song that doesn't take up too much space. Is content with being what it is. Fine. 3/5 I'm Happy Just To Dance With You I enjoy the sparse instrumental. The premise works well. The vocal melody feels like its dancing on top of the instrumental. Unremarkable, but fine for what it is. 3/5 And I Love Her Fsntastic guitar. A sweet little love song, with an instrumental that has a sentimental effect even without the lyrics there to spell it out. Decent. 3.5/5 Tell Me Why Has a fun energy to it. The chorus is pretty catchy. Decent. 3.5/5 Can't Buy Me Love Feels timeless in a way. Like it has always existed. The chorus has a very bouncy and infectious energy to it. I like the peppy bassline. Decent. 3.5/5 Any Time At All Has a bit of a kick to it. Great performance on the chorus. I like the guitar line that comes immediately after it. Has some cool rock n roll swagger to it. Good. 4/5 I'll Cry Instead Don't have much to say about this one. It's really well performed and does everything it's set out to do. Fine. 3/5 Things We Said Today Has some decent drama to it. Like the moodiness present in the vocal/guitar melody. Kinda hate the tambourine here. The vocal interplay adds a lot of atmosphere. Decent. 3.5/5 When I Get Home Comes in swinging with everything it's got. An extremely competent rock track with some grit and personality to it. The perspective in the lyrics is written effectively. Decent. 3.5/5 You Can't Do That The lyrics are kinda cringe and pushy. Instrumentally it's pretty cool, the cowbell is a nice touch and I really like some of the riffs here. Good vocal performance. Fine. 3/5 I'll Be Back Again Pleasant. Stays in its lane while never really dropping off. It's good for what it is, but feels a bit predictable. Kinda fades into the background towards the end. Average. 2.5/5 Didn't really do much for me. Shows a lot of promise for days to come for The Beatles, showcases their potential aptly. Just falls into "ham sandwich" territory, where it's a pretty good sandwich made with high quality ingredients, but at the end of the day it's a ham sandwich, not the most exciting meal. It's not boring, it's not uninteresting, it's not unimpressive. It just causes me to barely react, having very little to say about each track. Great as an historical piece, but overshadowed by even The Beatles' own later discography. 3/5 Fave track. Any Time At All Least fave track. I Should Have Known Better
Meh
Solid and nice? Not enough to make me a big Beatles fan, but I enjoyed their relentless sweet 60s optimism more than I thought I might
I've never felt strongly about the Beatles one way or the other, but this challenge has given me a new appreciation for them. Especially in the 60s, it seems the alternatives were bleak. And knowing what came later, it's clear the Beatles were important to the evolution. This is actually the first Beatles album I've ever listened to in full, and while it doesn't feel particularly impressive, it's nowhere near as bad as many of the other entries this algorithm dropped these last few weeks. Plus, I really appreciate that the Beatles stick to the radio standard of not droning on beyond a couple minutes per song. Smart. This keeps the weak tracks from dragging down the experience, and there are a number of them - "You Can't Do That" being particularly cringy. Overall, and in the greater context of what I've heard so far in this 1,001 stack, I'd say a 3 is fair.
This was the kind of thing I hoped to get on this experiment. I’ve never really cared to listen to a full Beatles album. Now that I have, I will say it was a good listen. Perfect run time with some catchy songs. I liked the stuff I didn’t know more than the songs I did know. This didn’t wow me though
enjoyable but obviously early stuff
J: 3, N: 4
Early Beatles have a historic sound. It's incredible and the beginning of their complex harmonies. But it's also still early days. It's a sound that i like for its nostalgia, but not as much the actual sound. I prefer when they get a little weirder and a little more complex.
Ça s'écoute mais rien d'exceptionnel ni de mémorable
Love the Beatles but just decent
Pretty indifferent towards this one. Some classics on here but the rest was pretty meh.
Fun rock-pop in the distinctive Beatles style. Wouldn't seek this out on my own, but I appreciate the appeal for what it is.
A bit too much of the usual early ‘60s simple love song style songs for it to be amazing. A decent amount of pretty solid tracks here too though. 6/10
Some high points, but not my favorite Beatles album
Beatleada average genérica. Bastante escuchable, pero no me liaría
Esta bé, no obstant, encara així esta bé
The Beatles just out here doing there thing. All hits all the way through.
60. Godine prošlog vijeka. Svijet u kojem je kontroverzno djelo bilo ,,Lovac u žitu". Mekano, osrednje, fine pjesmice za babe. Vrijedi: -hard days night -any time at all -and i love her
Quite good. Prefer later Beatles
Fint, lidt oldschool
This is the 4th Beatles album I've had on the list, and it comes very quickly after the third album which was 'With The Beatles'. This album was very similar to that album, which is maybe not surprising as it was also one of their earliest releases. It was ok, nothing special.
Includes lots of pop bangers this one. Normally I prefer the more obscure songs and especially like when they experiment with instruments. Less so on this but still enjoyed it. "I should have known better" I personally think this one is weak. Worst on the album "And I love her" - Best. I think Paul song and on this album prefer his contributions / style. Only just made 3 for me.
I hadn't heard of this band before today but I was pleasantly surprised. They seem quite ahead of their time and probably deserve to be more well known. Nice find.
Humble beginnings for one of the best bands of all time. First Beatles album on the list, about time. The Beatles philosophy was similar to some other artists of that time - they were recording and releasing albums at a crazy fast pace, especially for todays standards. The sheer amount of songs made and recorded meant that they had a lot of practical experience with creating music. This paid dividends on their later releases, where they achieved legendary status and made some of the best known songs ever. Back to this particular album, nothing is too special here. This is a good, classic Beatles sounding, album. The songs sound poppy and cheerful, the chord progressions are nice, clean and straightforward, the vocal harmonies are phenomenal, as always. Most of the lyrical themes are about love. They manage to sound emotional, exciting and memorable. Solid album, not their best by a long shot. I'm ready for more, giving this one a 3.
I've heard most of these songs through osmosis and compilations but haven't listened to this as an album before. Thirteen songs in 30 minutes? Nice. And a few lesser-known ones I hadn't heard before. I know this is an important one since it is the beginning of everything changing in popular music but it's not a Beatles album that I'll return to for repeated listens.
Foundational rock and roll. I love the Beatles, but not this particular era.
Ugh. The Beatles simply aren’t good
The instruments played simply and really well. Appreciated the drummer thought I didn't care so much for the vocals.
good beatles album, repetitive at times not their best, i would put 3,5 if i could
Listens: 2 Stand Out tracks: And I love Her, Can't Buy Me Love Possibly controversial, but early Beatles just aren't as good as their genre shift to psychedelic rock in the latter half of the decade. Some of the tracks are timeless, but most of if not all of the tracks seem to be dealing with some love affair/interest or affection towards a woman or women and the dynamics of relationships with those women. There's virtually no controversial opinions or political views expressed. The lyrics are simple and often repetitive.
Not a fan. I understand the importance but feels twee
I don't really feel like I missed out never hearing this album in its entirety. The hits are the hits. I'm glad I got to know the songs "if I fell" and "I should have known better" better. The rest just feels like an unsubstantial Beatles version of The general sound of music in that genre. Wasn't terrible, but didn't move me in any substantial way.
The Beatles' first album of original material, and a turning point of their songwriting in a more mature and experimental way. The strike of that iconic chord is testament to the shift of Lennon and McCartney's musicianship that would become much more obvious later on. Harrison, although mostly absent on lead vocals, adds enough vibrancy with his jangly guitarwork. While this album has some significant highs in the Beatles' timeline, it's by no means my favourite, and not very consistent. Best Tracks: - A Hard Day's Night - If I Fell - And I Love Her Worst Tracks: - Things We Said Today Rating: 7.5/10
Slow, cumbersome start. It's all very washy and dull but surprisingly dark by the end. Never seen the movie so unsure if a visual element is needed to fully appreciate. Can't be denied that a couple of songs are Beatles essential listens.
Listened to the UK version of the album, features some recognizable songs in the title track and Can't Buy Me Love. It doubled as a movie soundtrack. It's an album by The Beatles, the first with tracks only composed by the group, a lovely album, but not peak Beatles for me
It's beatles but not the best one it's okay. It has sounds.
An early Beatles album.
C'est peut-être l'album le plus faible des Beatles, si c'est quelque chose qui existe. I'm happy just to dance with you. Tell me Why. C'est vraiment juste ça qui cloche. C'est une pas pire moyenne au baton. Mais tsé. Bravo.
It was fine. More Beatles.
Is this the most lovey-dovey Beatles album? I still liked it, but of all I've heard so far, it's the only one I wouldn't listen to again.
Never anything wrong with a Beatles album
Decent album but nothing special when compared to the rest of the Beatles discography
Competent.
Pretty good, classic Beatles sound, I liked most of them. If I Fell, And I Love Her, Any Time At All
Rating: 6/10 Don't care for it much besides A Hard Day's Night and Can't Buy Me Love.
Sounds like the Beatles
Love is in the air Sappy love songs in your ear Simple and catchy
Just when you think you have an original thought, the top review proves you very wrong. Didn't think I could be surprised by Beatles of all bands, but "Any Time At All" was a snap-keep for me. It's not Good Beatles, but it's maybe the best Shitty Beatles album, thanks to those lush harmonies. Top of the Slops.
How many bands out there could write a song like If I Fell and it not even be in the top 50 songs of their discography. Easily their best album pre-Help, and contains some real gems. That being said, there’s some really forgettable tracks on here, as there is on every Beatles album before they stopped touring.
6.5/10
Not near as bad as I thought. I actually enjoyed a song or two, but I still don't understand the hype. Very overrated band
Early Beatles work here again. It's 30 minutes of pure 60's pop music. There are some gems on this album, all written by John and Paul. No George Harrison tunes on this one. :-( Overall, it's a solid pop album for the 60's. There are Beatles classics here, and the movie with the same name was the same drivel you see from modern boy/girl bands. All light-hearted. The Beatles true genius would not be realized until Rubber Soul and onwards. 3/5
I liked the pop stuff more than the rock stuff
A nice introduction to the fab 4
Fürn Beatles Album eigentlich nicht so gut aber trotzdem noch echt toll
track one: a hard day's night - noisy, interesting vocal harmonies. almost jazz like melody?? vocal stretches in the chorus. interesting twangy guitar solo, kind of like country. like the bridge. 3/5 track two: i should have known better - continuing with the countryish vibes. like the melody/vocal line. not so much a fan of the harmonica. but i like the notes/chords. fun song. instrumentation is nice too. track three: if i fell - interesting, more mellow. track four: im happy just to dance with you - what's happening with the drums? same guitar/background noise as the rest of the album. floats around through the chords. i like the vocal layering on the chorus. track four: and i love her - sounds minor but also something else - augmented? i know this song already too. i like the plucking of whatever that is - banjo?? who knows track five: tell me why - sounds far off or live? might just be quality. overall im liking the vocal harmonies on the whole album, this is an example. track six: can't buy me love - can't tell what's going on. this reminds me of elvis?? just the voices and specifcally the enunciation of the words. it's country like. i like the solo and the background noises. track seven: any time at all - i like the rhythym here. it's interesting and different. this sounds familiar. i really like how full it sounds, there's this great base line in the back and the switching of the singers fleshes out the song. track eight: ill cry instead - country ish AGAIN - maybe a sign of the timing of this album? its good though, i don't mind it. track nine: things we said today - beautiful quality of the voice. harmonies again are lovely. so is the guitar strumming that's almost used as percussion. track ten: when i get home - sounds ahead of it's time. i like the drums, creates a very nice effect. track eleven: you can't do that - percussion is interesting, is that a cowbell? vocals are consistently great. guitar melody is unusual, but it works. track twelve: ill be back - i like the guitar in this. melodies are strange. feels... wandering? coastal? i like this one. OVERALL REVIEW: great vocals, kind of noisy background, unusual percussion, you can tell it's an early album. love the harmonizing throughout the album.
Definitely not the best Beatles album, but still killer songs
Pop Rock being very bubble gum-poppy. Good background music.
It’s the Beatles. Whatever.
the og boy band "if i fell" would've got me in '64 even though it's low key male manipulator music
Short, sweet, sappy and soppy! Now guess which one’s which.
Later Beatles better
I believe it’s their first record …it’s pop 2 min songs never heard it straight thru
I mean it's early Beatles. Good pop with solid songwriting but nothing compared to what they would become in a few years. 7/10
Great album, very fun
3.0 - Ok
This is a good Beatles album
Not a big fan of the Beatles but a good album nonetheless, 6/10.
Pleasant enough
The Beatles, arguably at the peak of their early stage. At the time, I'm sure they sounded very fresh. There's certainly some tight songs on here, and it's clear Lennon and McCartney already had a strong knack for songwriting. But, for me, it's still just very simple, very teenage pop, nothing more. And there's nothing wrong with that. I'll listen, I'll tap my foot, I'll move on. Though, I must say, the lyrics are rather grating. Fav tracks: A Hard Day's Night, Can't Buy Me Love, Things We Said Today
not bad, bit generic
Nice
3.5
3 stars. Fine.
A slightly unremarkable Beatles album for me.
It's okay, but I think Beatles is just not my cup of tea.
Ok, basic Beatles album
Guess that's one of the iconic Beatles albums. It's an easy listen, perfectly fine for a commute, road trip or dinner. Probably won't listen to it again on other occasions.
Not a fan of the production so far. Voice is super high in the right channel with drums bass and guitar in left very low in the mix. Some really great songs though on this album mixed in with some relatively forgettable songs.
I agree with Bryan, the hits are fun but every song I don’t recognize doesn’t get me going. Take, for instance, “I’ll be back,” it has some sweetness to it, but it’s pretty boring. Way more cowbell than I remembered
The early Beatles stuff just doesn’t really do it for me. Definitely some classics on here tho
Few good hits, overall nothing special
Some good classics, ain’t my favorite.
Meh idk i liked it but tbh the beatles kind of always sound the same but I do respect it. Ive been more impressed by the Beatles in their other works as this one is completely stripped of any deep cuts or deep lyricism which is 100% okay I just prefer a little bit more depth in what I choose to listen to.
Good
Another Beatles album, huh? Same as the last time, I do appreciate their sound and what they've done for music, but they're just not something I really enjoy listening to. At least their albums are short. Get in, drop a few tracks with their iconic sound, get out. Solid. Best song: Can't Buy Me Love
Didn't care for it nearly as much as I expected to. The singles were great, though maybe just because I've heard them a billion times each. I think this album is more about potential than achievement. I liked the harmonies but it mostly sounded like any other early 60s album to be.
First time ever listening to the Beatles. I thought it was fun, I can see how it was revolutionary in its time. But growing up where this is more of the baseline, I thought it was a fun album but nothing special.
Later Beatles >>>> Early Beatles I'm sure this got people going back in the day, but it doesn't do much for me today.
Pop, pop, pop, so very pop, and fun, bouncy pablum with a lot of variety in sound and tone. 13 songs in 30 minutes - so very commercialy prepared - the Beatles before the Stones showed them the way forward.
Pretty mellow album really. Still good but just not what I want from Beatles.
It's the beatles what am I supposed to say, it's good for 1964...
Prefer their later stuff but And I Love Her is great
An early Beatles album…that’s all I have to say. 3 stars
Jack says this is no one’s fave BUT My main take is that why are men like Taylor Swift albums all sound the same and this is their fave Also quite whiny It’s 30 minutes but I can barely get to the end I liked some of them that were more country bops - Any Time At All
I love the opening title track (I knew it before). The rest I didn’t vibe with as much as I thought. It probably needs more listens I feel.
pas mon album préféré des Beatles même s'il comporte quelques titres superbes. Coups de cœur : - And I Love Her - Tell Mẹ Why - I'll Be Back
Earlier Beatles never did it for me, although their cultural importance is undeniable.Whether A Hard Day's Night should be on the list, is questionable though.
solid Beatles album
A short one, but pretty good. Catchy. Poppy. A pretty distinctive sound for the album. 3.5
Do we really need the entire Beatles discography in this list? I get having 2-3 because it's the Beatles and whatever, but surely the point of this list would be to showcase different albums from different bands in the more obscure genres, I think those are the albums you should listen to before you die. The album albeit wasn't terrible I think it's one of their better ones, but their still one of the most overrated bands in history.
3 - Dunno this just felt a bit generic and nothing really stood out much
Really really really meh if you ask me. The early Beatlemania era music is so bland, maybe thanks in part to them evolving creatively over the years as a comparison. You can basically just take the choruses from the two big singles here and leave everything else. 2.9/5
I don't really care for this
I enjoyed the Album, and I plan to re-listen to it. My favorite songs were I Should Have Known Better, I'm Happy Just To Dance With You, and Can't Buy Me Love. It all just felt romantic.
Classic Beatles
Definitely sick of the singles but a lot of other good tracks I wasn't familiar with since I only listen to the records when they're on a shitload of drugs.
Two pretty big Beatles songs and a bunch of others I have never heard that all talk about love. Even the songs that are not hits are clean and show how talented they were as a group. Not my favorite Beatles album and probably not the most renowned one either but still a good listen. 6/10
I like later Beatles albums a lot but this has a lot of twee shite on it. Hard Days Night, Any Time At All and And I Love Her keep this from being a two.
A handful of truly lovely songs and great harmonies across the board; otherwise it's just another early Beatles album in my opinion. Highlights: A Hard Day's Night, If I Fell, And I Love Her
never been the biggest fan of early beatles albums. it’s solid, but far from their best
Wider schön gsi es Beatles Album vo vorne bis hinde müsse durelose. Doch leider hets mi dasmal biz weniger catched wie s wiise Album. One of the better early Beatles albums I've heard, though still a far cry from the later stuff.
Finally my first Beatles album. I've never listened to one in full before, I've only ever listened to their biggest hits, so I have nothing really to compare it to. I know that they were more experimental and certainly less pop oriented as they went on. This is good though. It's all just fun, jangly, bubblegum pop, but the absolute best of the genre. Lennon and McCartney are just the best aren't they? Great at writing songs, great vocalists, the harmonies are really good. I know the title track, 'Can't Buy Me Love' and 'Any Time At All' but there are some hidden gems on here too. 'And I Love Her', 'Tell Me Why' are both really good, but my favourite song on the album goes to 'If I Fell'. As I said before the harmonies are great, it's a catchy song. I think any of those three could have been released as a single back in the day and would be just as famous as any other Beatles single and would be on greatest hits albums. It's not quite perfect, or anything massively groundbreaking but it's very good.
Middling Beatles record. The title track and Can’t Buy Me Love are the stand outs to me.
a couple good songs, not their best album
it's impossible to even offer up an opinion that isn't just "oh neat" to any Beatles album before Rubber Soul (or Help!, to be nice). like, i obviously can't/don't hate it, but i really couldn't imagine it as anything but a "oh boy the Beatles!" delivery system. it delivers the Beatles circa 1964. i like it. it's fine.
"(Paul and I) were just writing songs à la Everly Brothers, à la Buddy Holly, pop songs with no more thought of them than that – to create a sound. And the words were almost irrelevant." John Lennon, interviewed by David Sheff (1981). Highlights: A Hard Day's Night, And I Love Her, Can't Buy Me Love In a nutshell: “it’s only the beginning…” A Hard Day's Night is an example of how popular music and contemporary music came to be. You just cherry pick what you like and tweak it from there. It's fine. Great singles, mediocre filler. I prefer Help! and their later albums. That where The Beatles were at their best. Overall: 5/10
Middle-range Beatles album
Day 67 - Nov 18th, 2024 Boring. 3/5
Anothe Beatles album....
This was fine. I never really got the hype with the group but listenable.
Boring - before they got good
i'm not even grading this one on a beatles-shaped curve it's just alright
3 of their more famous songs on here, the rest is typical Beatles B-list stuff. 13 songs in 30 minutes, highly repetitive
This is fine. I genuinely like the Monkees better.
Ok I know im not the biggest Beatles fan, but I know their renown is well deserved, but I'll freely admit, I have never heard of this Beatles album or a single song on this album before. Some how this album was just completely off my Beatles radar, so that makes me question, is this album just mid? We'll find out I guess Yea no I was right this was mid sry Beatles, It wasn't bad by any means but its the fuckin Beatles, they are legends The most solid and probably definitive 3 I've ever put It wasn't bad, its wasn't fantastic, just right down the middle of enjoyment
I'm sure at the time these songs were wholly original and amazing. However, listening to it now I noticed many of the songs sounds repetitive. Can't Buy Me Love was the stand-out from this album. That's a timeless classic and I love it. Beatles are legendary, so I'm sure my 3-star score won't break their hearts. They have better albums in their catalogue.
A little killer, a lot of filler. Interesting to see how they evolved within just a couple years.
30 minutes long was respectful so at least I appreciate that
Well, it’s the Beatles. I like them but don’t find most of their work massively compelling. Pleasant and mellow.
5/10 in six years from this album they would be one of the most transformative musical acts that pop music has ever seen and at the end of their good work. In this album they are pleasant-enough beanie babies. Wild. 10-28-2024
I hadn't heard a lot of the songs on this before, which I think is very telling. In fact I'd only heard Hard Day's Night and Can't Buy Me Love. The singing sounds very flat to me (easy to hear what The Rutles were parodying here). A lot of filler love songs which you me are just lesser versions of I Want to Hold Your Hand.
Enjoyable, of course. But early Beatles just feel a bit slight to me.
Obviously by Beatles standard, this album is nowhere near their best. However, it's still a pretty good mid-60s pop-rock album, and the opening track is fantastic. I just wish this album gets the "Giles Martin" treatment soon, because the 2009 remasters can be a struggle.
Yet another Beatles album.
stil not quite there ,but these boys are getting better . 3
60s rock with a tinge of extra enjoyability across the album because the beatles are good just on the cusp of 4/5, but instead, as someone who hasnt listened through a beatles album before signing up for this site, this one will just keep me more excited for the next i roll from them
Refined vanilla Beatles.
well, it's the beatles. idk what to say about them. i'm more a fan of their weird stuff and they weren't really doing that yet with this album. favs were title track, and i love her, + things we said today
An inoffensive Beatles record. Fun listen. If I Fell, Can't Buy Me Love, Things We Said Today, You Can't Do That were my favourites. Absolute favourite was "And I Love Her", however. Fantastic song altogether. Feck it, is this list driving me to liking The Beatles? (this was their first album that I found anything of note in)
Basic, good I guess… 3.5 here but I’m leaning downwards
Classic
Doe een shotje elke keer als love wordt gezegd
The A-Side has almost all of the best early Beatles songs; the B-side is just kind of there, I guess. I'd give this 3.5 stars if I could.
Beatles i boyband mode før de begyndte at rykke grænser. Ret catchy
This album was ruined for me by The Woofers and Tweeters Ensembles - Beatles Barkers...
Okay, so listen. This is their third album, but it just sounds a bit meh, apart from maybe the first song. This album just sounds very generic from around that time, and I just can't give it a higher score because if this was another band with similar songs, I would've leaned more towards 2, whereas now I lean more towards 4.
Some all-time great songs but some filler as well? They were producing so many songs during this time that they had clunkers, too. Prefer the later Beatles stuff but some of this is great as well.
Well...for me it's not bad, some good melodies. But all in all it's just boring, repetitive and...yeah...boring. maybe it was something special back then, but now for me there's a lot of Bands who do the Beatles style better than the Beatles. Give it 3 stars out of fear a Beatles fan will kill me otherwise.
It was alright
Good album but it feels dated. Some of John’s lyrics caught me off guard.
This is the Beatles I remember, not that purple submarine or I am the walrus psychedelic bull shit. But still overall I think the Beatles are over hyped.
I foun it a bit monothematic with the lyrics, but can appreciate the sound and the variety in style! Favourite song: I'll cry instead
It is difficult for me to appreciate an album just because it was groundbreaking when it came out, but you can't deny that these boys really knew how to make proper pop music. They have a strong sense of melody and that shines through the best of the tracks here. 'If I fell', 'And I Love Her' and ' I'll Be Back ' were my favourites just because of the beautiful melody and the harmony. Rest of the songs are just good. Nothing special.I think it's mostly a Lennon album and I prefer McCartney to him.
erste akkord scho iconic. hard days night als song au. s instrumental noch de erste strophe (?), aso halt twiddly teil. ishouldve known better au geil. if i fell au haard, sie singed sooo guet. dance with you isch sicher schwächer als die erste drü. aber etz nöd rotz arsch, meh afoch en herzige song pber tanze mit ein girl. and i love her isch aaau do druff. huuuere schöne song, meeega simpel super schöni melodie. tell me why isch eaasy, kein riese banger. cant buy me love ISCH en banger. seehr bluesy halt und geeili melodie. groovt au zimli. any time at all hani sehr geil gfunde, han mi nöd dra möge erinnere. ill cry instead isch wieder easy churz und sochli en "chlinere" song. tell me why au easy cool, aber nüt bsunders. you can't do that het geili harmonies wieder und de 12-saite shit isch geeeil. ill be back isch scho de letst?? schöööne song john.
so allgemein guet, mengisch chli chinderlied und chli "ja bö halt beatles", sber ich miss sie aub au mit anderne massstäb? and I love her unglaublich schöns lied
Okay
Not my favourite Beatles record but it's still a great jam. The singles are my favourite out of familiarity, being the title track and Can’t Buy Me Love, but I didn’t really connect with the album tracks.
I’m just happy that this album is over now
def one of beatles' solid and consistent album
This was a much more sweet album than I expected. All the lyrics are just wanting a nice girl to spend a nice wholesome day with. I totally get how this would cut right to the heart of a 13 year old girl in 1964. This is on the edge of a 3 and 4 star, but probably leans to 3. I enjoyed a lot of the songs, but didnt love them (except Hard Days Night and Cant Buy Me Love) Album cover: A-
All downhill after track one. It's not offensive, but not inspiring either.
This album was the OK-est of all the Beatles records I've heard. The best song was the opener, "A Hard Day's Night". I also enjoyed "Tell Me Why" and "Can't Buy Me Love". I listened to this song on the car ride and it kind of flew by in a blur of swingy Beatles sounds. From some quick googling, this album was clearly an important moment in transatlantic rock and roll. I wasn't part of that moment, so I am helpless but to judge it for what I hear today in 2024. It was fine. It was a lot of the same, and it managed to get a bit same-y even in it's very short run time of thirty minutes. The songs are all so short, but many seem to pick up right where the last one left off. 6/10
Beatles before they became great. It is fun but not near the level of their later stuff
It was fine, A Hard Day’s Night is not only a great song but also such a good song title and Can’t Buy Me Love is a decent track. They’re obviously great at the melodies but fuck does the lyrical content get a bit stale for me. 3 stars
Not their greatest
It's The Beatles.
Good album but nothing really ever stood out. I wish the songs were maybe 30 seconds longer so they had more staying power in my mind. A lot of songs felt like a little bit more time could help them explore the ideas in the song a little more
It's a solid album. One of the early ones, with early style British boy band sound.
Not quite as adventurous as the later Beatles. Not bad at all though. My favourite is And I Love Her.
Some classics but some really generic songs here too. They kind of do the same thing romance authors do, where they don’t really describe any of the women they’re talking about. It’s ok once in a while but there are so many songs in a row just about some faceless nameless girl that it’s off putting and almost seems gimmicky.
Not their best, nor their worse. 6/10
Some iconic songs but not the later day masterpieces of their other albums
It starts off strong, but starts sounding very 'one note.' I feel like I'm listening to the same song over and over again.
Mid
Starts off with a bang but slows down as the album progresses.
STANDOUTS: A Hard Day's Night OVERALL: 3/5; I hate that a "listenable" rating now deserves three stars, but... here we are. There's one standout Beatles song, but it's otherwise a fairly forgettable album.
Catchy but nowhere near their best
decent, but i'm just not really into the beatles
Beatles innit
It’s The Beatles right? I’m not going to trash them but I’m not going to scream into a state of hysteria outside an old theatre. Some musical technician is going to tell how influential and groundbreaking they were. I could believe that. How the song structures are ahead of their time and revolutionised pop/rock. Great. I’ve just never found myself WANTING to listen to The Beatles. As this is an early album there was little experimental that I could tell so sounded like straight ahead 60s rock. A few of the later tracks, more obscure to me, were a saving grace. Still only a 3. A hater would have given a 2 and welcomed the blowback.
okay
It was ok. Had 4-5 songs that were hits
The Bestlesin ”maybe baby” -osaston levyt on kyl aika nopeesti kuultu tekstien osamta. Tämä toki parhainmistoa näistä ekoista. Hittejä täynnä toki tämäkin. Hyvää poprokkii mutta ei nyt ehkä ihan vertaudu neloseen asti. 3/5
Finest boyband material
Very early 60s bubblegum. Glad I got this one first, it's always amazing to see their transformation in such a short time. They still had some growing to do, but for the time it was groundbreaking. 3/5
Beatles record. Albeit quite nice. There’s a certain punch especially early in the record and these songs are written very well, musically. The production and lyricism has aged like milk. Drums are good tho.
Tää oli ihan hyvä Beatles levyksi. Levyn melodiat ja sointukuviot tuntui iskevän paljon paremmin kuin muissa Beatlesin levyissä. Parhaat: A Hard Day's Night, I Should Have Known Better, Can't Buy Me Love
The third album from one of the biggest bands ever ain't their best, but so early on, that's to be expected. The elements are there. I don't care for some of the stuff like "Any Time at All," but I also like a lot of the songs, like... "Any Time at All." What? Do I like this song or not? I really can't tell. What is going on? Why is everything getting hazy? Paul died in 196------------------------------sdddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd..................................................
I really dislike this. It's corny with teenage diary lyrics and average musicianship. I generally dislike any early 60's British invasion music so this was no surprise. I understand the significance of this album and The Beatles place in music history so I'm not going to give it a two star review like I want to. This album reminds me of being a kid hanging out with my aunt who loves the Beatles so there was at least that.
This is the first Beatles album so far and maybe I don’t get them yet… a pleasant album but expected better
Correct
This is fine, some decent pop songs on here. This clearly isn’t the stuff that Beatles are being hyped up for though.
It's early Beatles innit.
#286. I'm now convinced that the Beatles only sold so many records because that was literally the only way to listen to music back then. In today's age of streaming, I bet they'd struggle pretty hard. This is the fourth mid ass album of theirs I've had to listen to on this list so far, and I still haven't seen whatever it is the boomers saw in this band. 3/5: meh
After a week of truly terrible albums, in a month of really blah albums (saying that because we did get a few good ones) we have arrived at possibly the last Beatles album? Either way I'm just grateful we got something good. The past month I've been like middle John searching for something good. I've tried to be like George far left, giving these albums a chance. But most of the time I end up like far left and middle Paul in my questioning and disgust respectfully. Sadly, I worry I'll end up like far left Ringo by the end of this list, disappointed at all the wasted album choices.
i mean its the beatles so yeah its good
6/10 - It was not fantastic. It has some good songs that are extremely popular but the new ones were not that good.
Not their best and/or most influential, but still the Beatles.
I mean it's another Beatles album. They kind of sound the same after a while.
It’s been a hard day’s night- felt luv
Fun but slightly boring
This is their best album to this point. The B-Side falls off however, but the A-Side stands up to Rubber Soul. B
...
I’m typically a little underwhelmed by the Beatles, and although I approached this with an open mind and hoped to enjoy it more, I can’t say it won me over. “A Hard Day’s Night” always takes me back to high school art classes, where the teacher would play it while we worked on projects.
There are some really famous and enduring song on this album, to be sure, but overall, it was a little uneven for me. I think they were still trying to find their unique sound at this point. Pretty solid, but not something I will seek out to listen to again.
1. A Hard Day's Night - 4 Beatles generally aren't my taste. Pretty good. Love the guitar work in parts. 2. I Should Have Known Better - 3 More what I expected. 3. If I Fell - 2 Find it hard to even tap my foot to this. Boring. 4. I'm Happy Just to Dance With You - 3 5. And I Love Her - 3 Enjoyable cafe music, if you removed the vocals 6. Tell Me Why - 3 7. Can't Buy Me Love - 3.5 Finally recognized one. Nice guitar 8. Any Time at All - 3 9. I'll Cry Instead - 3 Someone call the Wahmbulence 10. Things We Said Today - 3 11. When I Get Home - 3 12. You Can't Do That - 3.5 13. I'll Be Back - 3 The Beatles are still okay. Can't see myself ever looking for one of these songs again.
Not bad but their later stuff is way better. This is good 60s pop music. Although, I did learn that Rivers straight up stole the line "I can't help my feelings I get out of mind." for the lame hash pipe song.
I thought I would like this more than I did. It was okay, and I liked a few songs, but overall, just meh.
Not my favorite Beatles album. I like “A Hard Day’s Night” the song, but I feel like I don’t understand the direction of this album.
I wanted to like this album more because it's The Beatles. Maybe it was a groundbreaking album at the time.... The later albums are so much better IMO. * It may be true that all you need is love, but do all the songs need to be about love? I love her, she loves me, can't buy it, love to love you, love to hold your hand, need to love, love ad nauseam. * John Lennon's voice is and was amazing.
Couple of tracks I’ve not heard of. Very listenable.
3/5 - easy listen
13 songs in 30 minutes! This is the opposite of most albums on this list. There are obviously a couple songs on hear that everyone in the world knows. They're not The Beatles best songs, but they're memorable for a reason. The rest of the album all kind of sounds the same, and every song is about the same subject matter. It's not a bad thing. Just maybe a little stale. I almost feel obligated to rate it higher because it's The Beatles, but then there's the equal obligatory modern take the The Beatles are overrated. If I could, I would probably give this a 3.5/5.
Beatles before drugs.. eh
I do not care for the Beatles.
I already got this album, back before I joined a listening group.
…а потом они попробовали кое-что потяжелее и создали сладж метал 6/10
I was immediately glad to see this wasn't The Shitty Beatles, because they suck. This takes me back to my high school days, what a gas! Just kidding. I started listening to The Beatles in my late 20's, and I quickly realized how many hit songs they had. They pumped out the hits. They've been photographed more than Jesus Christ. This was good for the time it was in, before The Drugs ruined the youths and sent this once great nation torpedoing toward hell. And I Love Her is my favorite. I love the vocals.
I'm a huge Beatles fan; that can't be overstated. I prefer their work two years in and beyond (i.e., "Help!" and everything after). It's amazing to think "The Beatles" did their thing and was over before anyone turned 30, and what they accomplished in just 6 short years of recording music. Unfathomable for a teen cover band who got sick of opening bands playing the songs that they intended to play as the headliner, and so decided to write their own songs. The Beatles are often lauded as great songwriters, but Paul's bass playing and Ringo's backbeat are impeccable. Not only can they sing, but they can harmonize! Songs like "If I Fell" (a George Martin favorite) prove their fandom of The Everly Brothers. I don't think their harmonies get enough credit in general; imagine "Good Day Sunshine", "Nowhere Man", or "Don't Let Me Down" without harmony. Their ability to write two lead vocal lines simultaneously allows the listener to choose and alternate between what they hear as the main melody. The longest song here is 2:44. These songs not only contained verse, chorus, and a bridge, but also an intro and coda. They pack a lot into so little, and they cover everything from the country ("I'll Cry Instead"), doo-wop rock ("Tell Me Why"), blues ("You Can't Do That"), and rock and roll ("Can't Buy Me Love"), as well as going into the minor keys for "And I Love Her," "Things We Said Today," and "I'll Be Back." I have to laugh at the hard T in "Any Time A'Tall"--ahem--"Any Time At All." In those early years, they were releasing two albums a year along with singles that contained new B-sides. They kept their momentum up, and you can hear the drive and fervor on this album, along with their many influences. Though The Beatles derived great songs imitating the styles of their favorite artists, they had yet to find their own style and sound by A Hard's Day Night.
Pretty good
