Reviews (page 8 of 13)

I'd only heard the singles so first time listening to the album. Good fun, would listen again

First time listening to a rock type album, loved it tbh

It’s very influential to hip-hop music, but the flows here are basic, the rhymes are simplistic. It feels like an on the spot freestyle on every song. That being said it really doesn’t sound bad and I like the Aerosmith track and the title track

"muestren su talento chicas"

THIS BEAT IS MY RECITAL. I THINK IT'S VERY VITAL. This was a really fun album and, from what I gather, very important for the hip hop movement back in the 80s. I liked it a lot

3.5 stars

I honestly feel like the only time I would want to listen to this as a record is driving around in a clapped out honda civic with the EQ fully bass boosted. It has some slappers but some of the tracks are really repetitive and not presenting anything of value (Dumb Girl for example). Might have been ahead of its time for being from the mid 80s, but it was only ahead of its time by a few years and leaves me feeling like it would have been a dime a dozen by the 90s. All that being said I have a hard time giving it less than a 3 because I would put a handful of the comparable albums of this era below it, and the 1 star spot is reserved for vanilla ice.

Solid enough. Quite repetitive by the end. But includes a banger.

Illin'

Like the oldschool beats but just not my type of music/hiphop. Would listen to it while cleaning but not over the headphones when im alone in my room

my ignorant ass did Not know where half the samples in work it came from. anyway i enjoyed this for what it was, but i tend to prefer 90s/00s hip hop. spoiled myself and looked at matt's review and yeah it's a little cheesy in 2026 but that can be a vibe,,, fav: it's tricky (sorry)

Peter Piper 3.6 It's Tricky 3.6 My Adidas 3.3 Walk This Way 3.7 Is It Live 3 Perfection 3.2 Hit It Run 3.1 Raising Hell 3.4 You Be Illin' 3 Dumb Girl 3.1 Son of Byford n/a Proud to Be Black 3.5 Score: 3.318181818

Top : Raising Hell Flop : Dumb Girl

Heard many times; 3.5; This is a fun album, and also an important one that I think makes complete sense to have on this list. It feels pretty corny in parts, but that also is what makes it enjoyable to me. It manages to his really hard while being sparse, which I think is because of the vocals and punchy drum machine. My one complaint is that the album can sound repetitive. Favorite Track: It's Tricky

Very old school even for my old ass. I loved the beats, but the lyricism left a lot to be desired. I couldn't even pay attention to the bars.

RUN-DMC. Originals right here. Some of the first genuinely good hip hop, and also, it was the first super commercially successful group, with this album in fact having the first sellout song, “My Adidas.” Essentially this is less of a worthwhile album experience than an essential text of hip-hop. It reps capitalism, but it also laid some serious groundwork for the greatness of the genre to come. Even though songs like "It's Tricky" and "You Be Illin" (one of the funniest and genuinely best first verses of any song ever probably) are honestly awesome, you can see at least one or two serious problems with each song, and honestly, if you hear one song you’ve heard most of them. That being said it’s still pretty nice. 6.5/10

Classic, I wish RAP had a little more of this these days. Walk this way is such a unusual but awesome crossover.

Another rap album. But in all honesty, I kind of enjoyed this one. I even liked some of it.

Liked it! Was surprised by the amount of songs I knew off it.

I love the Beastie boys, and this rap album sounds like a watered down version of them. But 3 stars considering these guys did it first.

Would I listen again: probs no but I like tricky (I already knew it) This is how rap should sound like for the most part. Not necessarily my bag though

some tracks are cool

I went in fully expecting to love this album. I did, I enjoy the old school hiphop. But it has to he said, the beats got a little stale, a little monotomous. It was the age obviously and the very distinct Run DMC style.

3.4 4x

Fun and nostalgic. Not much more than that

Haha I guess these guys were the originators of "vamp"

not my cup of tea but i discovered the artist of a very popular song 🤷🏽‍♀️

Fun to listen to, especially so at first but by the end their sound felt very familiar. Multiple famous tracks that I didn't know were theirs / on this album e.g. It's Tricky, Walk This Way, and Peter Piper

great album with amazing beats. My favorite song of the album is”walk this way” with Aerosmith.

This album was undeniably influential for crossing over hiphop and rockyroll fans but, 40 years later, it’s not a great listen. The opening run from “Peter Piper” through “Walk This Way” is pretty legendary, and I liked “Raising Hell” on side 2, but otherwise didn’t really get into the rest of the album. I’m receptive to arguments that Rick Rubin is actually the MVP of this record.

It's not for me but at least it has some jams. It does really sound like what parody hip hop was represented when I was a kid. I guess that speaks to it's wider influence? I would never start this on my own, but I was also not hating it as it played. I guess that makes it a 3.

It's tricky: a song that I have only listened thanks to TikTok and never looked that up until I arrived to this. Walk this way, a song that I first listened to in just dance

Muy bueno!

Walk this way Its tricky my sharona

Some good stuff on this album, but it does sound flat. Great as a foundational text for hip hop, but not sure I'll listen to it again. 3 Heard before? Some Owned: No: 70/283 (24%) Will I get: No

Good stuff! Not a good sustained listen for me.

80s and 90s rap sounds really similar to itself tbh

Cool example of hip hop history. Fun style. Tricky is great.

This album is really fun. I couldn't help but smile while listening. However, as the album goes on, the songs start to feel really repetitive.

I can see how it deserves a place on the list ebcause of it's impact, but overall it's not a great album, if you took the singles out I'm not sure I'd be able to tell one song from another, the beats are all so similar and you know every line is going to have emphasis on the 1 and then group vocals on the 4

Peter Piper gave me some hope but I just couldn’t truly love this album. The way that they sing and randomly pick up the other’s lines is kind of cool but after like 11 tracks of that it gets old really quick. There was potential here but there needed to be more variation in style. The Walk This Way remix and Raising Hell are a sign that they could’ve done that but just… didn’t. Oh well.

Feels like run dmc is the missing link between the origins of and the expansion of rap sub genres in the 90s. Also feels like jam master jay is less impressive now.

The first 2 tracks peter piper and its tricky are so vital and such good fun. The rest then unfortunately is a bit samey. As a landmark this is one to have but it could have been shortened by a song or 3

First time hearing it all the way through. Without a doubt, it’s a hugely important album for early hip hop. Crazy it’s 40 years old. It does have some simple rhyme schemes and maybe parts of the production hasn’t aged that well, but that’s part of the fun in some ways. It’s a neat listen. 3.5/5.0

I like this album pretty well, it's just not my typical music taste. It's very cool for what it is though!

I know it was revolutionary, but too slow and samples could be better.

1980s rap is still not my thing but some of the songs are undeniable

Energetic and fun for the most part. Can't help but feel this was repetitive at times.

Couple of iconic songs on this one, but otherwise a bit too samey.

Kinda mid to be frank, some good songs but overall not great

This is kinda a vibe. Very simple. Oh My god. It's Tricky.. That's crazy. It's understated and really letting the lyrics and delivery sort've speak for themselves. It is tricky. Yeah I can see why this really popularized Hip Hop. It's quite good. Bro I have Adidas. My Adidas. I really like this. I really like the way they keep switching it's really interesting to listen to. I've never really hear anything like this. Favourite: Walk This Way Least favourite: Hit It Run

4/20 Who knew mixing rock with hip-hop would actually sound pretty decent? Heard "Walk This Way" before but not the rest of the album. It's definitely tolerable compared to other rap albums

Are The Beastie Boys thieves????

I like the beats, i like the tunes, i like some of the attitude. Some of the songs are utterly juvenile and degrading to women. If they could have just been a bit more grown up this could have been awesome.

This is fun, and undoubtedly an important hip hop album. Bit silly though, innit?

Pionero

At one point RUN DMC were the biggest group in hip hop. It definitely sounds dated now but I'll give it a 3/5 for the nostalgia. The debut album and King of Rock are both better albums than this one though.

How is this hiphop and rock at the same time? Stand-outs - It's Tricky - Walk This Way

Enjoyed the Album with some of their Classics. Overall not the biggest fan of Rock and Rap together.

Fun album but sounds a bit samey

- they seem like fungis - I don’t like the sound effects in Hit it Run :(

Peter Piper - 4/5 It's Tricky - 5/5 My Adidas - 3.5/5 Walk This Way (feat. Aerosmith) - 4/5 Is It Live - 3.5/5 Perfection - 3/5 Hit It Run - 4/5 Raising Hell - 3.5/5 You Be Illin' - 4/5 Dumb Girl - 3/5 Son Of Byford - 2.5/5 Proud to Be Black - 4/5

For my personal taste this gets a 3. It's Tricky, Raising Hell, Peter Piper, Walk This Way, are classics, and there are more great tracks on this album so why only a 3. So why does this get a 3? Well first off Dumb Girl is misogynistic garbage. Second off the problem with Run DMC is their main lyrical subject is how awesome they are. It gets old, very quickly. This is a classic record, it's part of rap's golden age and Run DMC's lyrical acrobatics are on full display, great album, still a 3.

The best song on the album (“Walk This Way” naturally) isn’t at all representative of the work, I suppose. The album’s still strong, though, if now a bit dated.

I’ve heard a couple of these before! Had no idea who these people were but it was cool listening to something I knew when I kinda expected I wouldn’t like this album.

I liked it more than I thought I would. Can’t remember ever listening to Run Dmc. Didn’t like I’m black and some language in the songs

"It's Tricky" and "Walk This Way" are certified bangers, but listening to the entire album was kind of exhausting.

Best Songs: You be illin’ It’s tricky

Finns flera andra sköna old school beats, som Is it live och avslutande Proud to be black.

I’ve heard a lot of this bc my dad only listens to music from the 80s Favorites My adidas Hit it run

Definitely heard the hits many times. Remember recording You Be Illin' off the radio and memorizing. First time listening to the entire album.

Never listened. Expectations: Mid - Verdict: Good - This is pretty punchy right from the start. I can see why Walk This Way was the big hit, it has a lot more heft to it than most other tracks here. The title track is absolutely fantastic, I think they seem to be at their best when the beat has a rock/guitar element. Overall this was a brilliant listen, a great snapshot of hip-hop in the mid-80s.

The flow and samples are great here but the lyrics are really lacking even compared to the other rap albums on this list. Can't see myself listening to most of these tracks again. Favourite track: Walk This Way

Im not normally a fan of hiphop but this was alright

Cool mais assez vite lassant

Understand these guys are pioneers of rap and beats, but not a lot of variation on this album.

Total oldhead unk jams. Not my favorite, but I acknowledge the fact that it's a classic.

Actually kinda tuff, just not my type of music. Still appreciate it, tho

I guess this was cool? I have no ability to rate rap / hiphop since it’s not a genre I regularly listen to. But these guys were cooler (on a base level) than some of the other try-hards I’ve heard on this list (looking at you Kanye: Not. Cool.) So I guess I’ll dive right down the middle with my rating.

I saw someone say that if you give it less than four stars, then you shouldn’t be listening to hip-hop, luckily I found it only worth three.

Overall, really cool and fun sound. Love some classic hip hop.

t-t-t-t-ricky

First Platinum and multi-Platinum hip-hop record! Good album, obviously. V. '80's hip hop.

There’s only so much I can do. The singles are great and classic and there’s something to say for the ultra simple beats and sampling that was revolutionary, but by the end of the album it’s a bit one dimensional for me

As far as earlier hip hop goes, I was never a giant fan of Run DMC. They're foundational, sure, but I've never thought they were amazing. And this album exemplifies that. I liked listening to this album, but it's got aspects that take away from its enjoyment. The beats are a little too sparse. Some of the rhymes are a bit silly. This is a 3.5/5, and I guess we'll see at the end of the day if I'm rounding it up or down.

The first 4 tracks are the highlight of the album.

2.75. In retrospect, some of these songs are corny as hell. I was caught off guard the couple of times they dropped an F-bomb in a song. I guess I didn’t realize Run D.M.C. cursed in their songs?

Cool rock influence but there’s something about 80s rap I don’t particularly care for

Here are Run DMC, helping to bring hip-hop to the mainstream. Walk This Way was a huge track in the 80s and is the standout out track on the album. It's about the beat and the synergy of the rappers throughout. The album has a sense of humour and doesn't seem the need to marginalise or offended. It's not sending shivers down my spine - it sounds a bit thin and there's never going to much in the way of musicality, but it was a fun listen. Outside of the nostalgia of Walk This Way, the Peter Piper was clever and You Be Illin' made me smile. A low 3 stars.

A classic.

Good album, fun listen. 6.1/10

Dated, but still solid.

So much vibe and groove, all time Classic rap album. Of course it also has cons, after half of album it sounds repetetive but still its good. 7/10

Fine. A couple of iconic songs, but wouldn't listen again

This album sounds so innocent compared to the rap that I grew up listening to haha. It’s a classic for sure, but not something that I listen to often. You can’t deny the foundations of Hip Hop though, this one will always stand as the classic that it is.

a good one. i enjoyed it.

Hip hop isn't my thing but this was one of the most enjoyable hip hop albums I've ever listened to

J'ai beaucoup aimé My addidas!

raw mature classic, but clearly they were selling their souls for (to?) rock'n'roll. fav tracks: proud to be black, my adidas, titl trak, etc..... least fav: dumb girl

Good songs but not really my type of music

Old school one of my OG rap tapes 3.5 stars maybe closer to 4 for its impact, significance, and of course, the crossover with Aerosmith on walk this way

Old school! Some entertaining retro hip-hop. Better than a lot of the modern stuff. A one and done listen, but liked the two big numbers.

This really isn't my type of music but I can appreciate the art it represents. The only song I knew on the album was Walk This Way which still rocks today. I rated the album 2.54 on a scale of 5. Decent album

I'm struggling with this one a little bit. On first listen I thought it was a little goofy. "We're Raising hell like a class when the school bell rings!" Ooh... The music is a little campy and listening to it now feels sort of like an SNL sketch. But then I think about all the groundwork this laid (hello, Paul's Boutique) and how I would have absolutely devoured it if I had encountered it at 12 or 13 years old. Am I rating it for the "listenability" in today's context, or for the historical significance? If something was groundbreaking but is now primarily valued for nostalgia how does that factor in? I'm going to have to sit with this for a bit. Three stars due to blatant corporate sponsorship.

Another album that I’m familiar with many songs but had never listened to the entire thing. I didn’t own this album but was made familiar with many of the songs via MTV. Worth a listen but won’t be in my heavy rotation. Interesting to notice how slow it feels compared to modern rap music (similar to comedies from the same era).

Top

Great old rap

not my fav

Whilst an undoubtedly influential and important album for hip-hop, aside from a handful of the hits, it simply no longer holds up by modern standards. Still worth a listen if you're interested in where rap albums first started really being noteworthy.

Enjoyed it more than I thought as an indie person. Some beautiful moments but feels somewhat one note + could do without the misogyny .

Good old school hip-hop, they don’t do it like this anymore. Lyrically strong (that’s if you can understand what they’re saying, cause it’s trrrickey), musically quite boring

Classic. Penalty point deduction for reviving Aerosmith's career.

Neutral good album. It’s Tricky, Walk This Way. Didn’t know these were by them.

too white millennial man for me

the song "It's Tricky" is iconic but "Raising Hell' is WAY better

The instrumentals are very nice, title track is very nice

This feels more like an important time in music history than an album Id choose to listen to. Its raw and rhythm driven with its drum machines and bold chant like vocals. Not my thing but its influence is unmistakable on modern hip hop

walk this way, das scratching schon groß aber als album? c

Said a hip-hop, the hippie to the hippie The hip, hip-a-hop

ohhh this old skool rap. Walk This Way was a big hit and I've heard it so many times that it's kind of a novelty at this point but an interesting fusion. Listening to this album again after decades... I think the title track song Raising Hell is interesting when it comes to rock-rap fusion. "I'll cut the head off the devil and throw it at you." Jesus Christ! OKAY! Sounds like a party. I think that song also has a bit of a Beastie Boys feel to it which isn't surprising (but Beastie Boys fuse rock and rap in a way that I like better than how RunDMC does it). I think Run DMC started Def Jam and brought Beasties in? I'd have to look that up but I know they worked together. You Be Ill'n, Dumb Girl, My Adidas are all songs that kind of get on my nerves. skip. skip. skip. Peter Piper and Tricky are the best songs on here. It's Tricky is one of my favorite rap songs of all time. Those songs are Run DMC doing what they do best. The rest is just kind of okay.

This is a fun album (aside from Dumb Girl, c'mon boys - do better). Their version of Walk This Way is a classic, and what's not to love about It's Tricky. Overall, it's a little samesy, and it's not something I'd have in my regular listening rotation, but it's solid hippity-hop!

the songs are very similar and to me it like they follow a beatboxing rhythm which i dont look for in my hip hop songs. i would like a bit more diveristy or musicality but its still pretty peak

Dmc bjöd på fartfyllt album med old school rap beats och sköna bastakter It tricky rivstartade igång albumet som sedan för mig var något mer tråkigt Gillade främst It Is Live, men även Perfection och som sagt It's Tricky

Always fun to find the origin of a popular sample (which isn't even the true origin, just the song that used it first). I know Run DMC was incepted first, but I'm familiar with the trade off style of rapping by the Beastie Boys. Similar era of "rap-rock". As an LA girl though, I gotta represent the westside. While it is fun, I find this style of rap a little too goofy for my tastes. Didn't feel the need to save any songs, cuz I'm a sucka mc.

It's a fresh and fun listen, and I enjoyed it! Gets a bit samey through the course of the album, but is still good.

it's fun learning about the past. 3.5/5

Nota big fan but I appreciate their effort and good music played/done well is good music.

I get why my dad, a self claimed rap fan but just a huge dmc fan, doesn’t understand Kendrick. Just such a different sense of rapping, production, energy, whatever. I found the beats of this album real stale real fast. I’m sure the Aerosmith cover hit hard when it came out but it’s indistinguishable from a 2006 YouTube mashup now. I hope adidas paid them a huge bag. I like the hip hop rip rap rapping of this for what it’s worth, I just need less drum machine loop that never changes.

good album

Bell’ascolto, old school hip hop americano, good vibes, molte mine super conosciute che non avevo idea fossero di questo album

Oh this is hard because hits are slapping and the rest is ok. Could just as well be four stars but. 6/10

Not as good as their self titled album, but production is still great

groovy

The first four tracks were okay. Every thing else was subpar.

I never really loved Run DMC. I respect them. I think they’re cool. But I don’t think I’d ever decide to listen to one of their albums on my own.

I never thought that I'd listen to something that I could only describe as Funk Rap, but this is it. It's certainly an interesting genre; as a rap fan, I can't say I didn't enjoy it, but I also can't say I did, either. It's got a good rhythm, yet also a very annoying background sound. Very weird.

I’ve got nothing against this album or this music, but it just felt a bit too unserious for me to rate it higher. It was also interesting to learn that this was produced by Rick Rubin, because I mainly associate him with his Johnny Cash collaborations and other more sparse music. Favorite Track: Walk This Way

Helt ok album.

Bäst låtar: ”walk this way” och ”Illin”

I want to like this more, but something about the rap-rock combination just turns me off; I think maybe the guitar takes focus away from the percussion or something. I liked their debut album much better because of the raw and heavy beats. Still, the rapping and delivery are awesome and it’s a generally fun album.

I wasn’t sold on each track but there were a few that really stood out to me

Well I’m a peanut bar and I’m here to say, your cheques will arrive on another day

Pretty cool. At this stage, rap/hip hop still sounds nice to me. Not all about "bitches and guns".

Pretty good album I really enjoyed it

Had low expectations but liked it was more than I thought I would. Walk This Way is a banger and It’s Tricky is pretty catchy. Not really my wheelhouse but a long way from the worst album I’ve had so far and would be happy to play it again.

"We make a mean team my Adidas and me" - incredible line Sampling Aerosmith was cool! Not sure if I'm just not good at listening to hip hop, or if this is an accurate critique, but every song is kinda sounding the same, I'm feeling some ear fatigue. I'm honestly not sure if I'm listening to this/appreciating it correctly? They've referenced their own name so many times and I'm not loving that. The guitars on the title track are fun. "If you are cold I'll bring the heat, like I brought the world my funky beat" After finishing the whole album: I'm glad I listened to this one, but I don't think I'll be revisiting. Favorite tracks: It's Tricky, Walk this Way, Raising Hell, My Adidas. I think the overall sound is just too similar track to track for me. Not sure if that's a typical hip hop thing, or a typical Run DMC thing, or if it's just this album.

Not quite my style but I can appreciate what they did for hip hop!

I had fun listening to this album. Such a good 80s throwback and while I think their rhythm sometimes sounds the same (that’s rap I guess), I enjoyed focusing on the lyrics. Another album I feel cool for having listened too.

this way okay, not my thing

It's good I own it. I haven't listened to it in decades and it does sound decades old. I enjoyed the listen but wouldn't want to revisit soon

Favorite Tracks: Walk This Way | You Be Illin' | Proud to be Black

A classic. Before my time.

I’ve grown less fond of rap/hip-hop as I’ve aged. There’s few genres that I can’t play in the house out loud, but this is one. Mainly because I can’t have misogynistic shite being played in a house where my wife and daughter live. This I can play, but I ultimately lose interest after about the fifth/sixth track as it’s quite similar. Clean, but quite samey.

Good just not an absolute belter from my perspective.

I didn’t like or understand this music when it came out. In retrospect, I know I was just clueless and unwilling to accept a thing new. Now I see and appreciate that this wonderful music.

Classic. I really enjoyed this album, obviously knew the big tracks like walk this way and it's tricky. You can tell how it set up the genre and remains influential.

I understand the importance of this album in hip-hop’s history, but it still feels a bit repetitive and dated. Enjoyed most songs, but they melded into a very repetitive sound in the back half. Should definitely give it a listen if you are a hip-hop fan to understand its emergence, but it’s not an everyday listen for me.

Kind of funny. But a classic with some classic tracks.

A lot people say this type of rap is corny compared to now, but I wish rap was as fun as this again cuz why the fuck not

Lots of bangers on here. 3.5

Not usually my genre but I did enjoy some tracks on this, can tell it with the release year it was a game changer for hip-hop and influenced so many.

I liked a few songs

The drum machine was doing some crazy heavy lifting, the sac player deserves a raise. Great to hear the source of many great samples.

It is obvious when listening how this album influenced future music. It's Tricky and Walk This Way are fun and cool and it's almost hard to comprehend the latter because mashups became such a thing that the novelty is completely gone. But Walk This Way is the reason for all of that. The back half features a lot of overlong songs with sparse instrumentation and the vocals don't really have a lot of variety to them so it got to be a little tedious.

Dos canciones icónicas. El resto?

I don't really like 80s hip-hop, but if I'm gonna listen to it it'll be Run-DMC

What the fuck is the track Dumb Girl. I liked the first half of this album then got a bit tired towards the end.

An album of high highs and low lows. Peter Piper, It’s Tricky, and Walk This Way are brilliant, but some of the tracks at the back end of the album are filler at best and plain bad at worst (Dumb Girl)… Evens out at a solid 3, wasn’t consistent enough to give a 4.

Some tunes in there but overall just ok nothing to sCREAM about.

Enjoyed it, some naughty old school hip hop beats

It's an iconic sound for sure. Sharp edged, bright, bombastic, and loud as hell. This starts like a greatest-hits record; all tracks instantly recognisable. It's still excellent, just not something I'd usually want to tackle in one sitting.

old school hiphop

While I wouldn’t consider myself a “fan” of Run-D.M.C., I’m well aware of them and how they paved the way for hip hop music. I was pleasantly surprised upon the opening of this album to fall into a fun and somewhat familiar array of songs from them.

Ah, the good old days before mumbly-auto-tune-slop hop - not that I'm qualified to judge those qualities. Still this record was a lot more fun than I expected, being so proto-lo-fi-retro hop. Sure, plenty of vinyl scratching, 808 beats, beatboxing and juvenile social commentary (very Beastie Boys adjacent), but there was also a surprising amount of hard rock guitar and drums, thanks in part to Aerosmith. Me, ignoramus, I didn't know anything about Aerosmith before the rock-rap rendition of 'Walk This Way.' Who knew that style would one day lead to the legend of Kid Rock.

I'm personally not the biggest fan of rap however this album was a really fun listen and I enjoyed almost all the songs on here

Aufgenommen 1985–1986 im Chung King Studio, New York City. Die Gruppe aus den USA besteht aus Joseph „Run“ Simmons, Darryl „DMC“ McDaniels und Jason „Jam Master Jay“ Mizell. Das Album mischt Hip Hop mit Rap Rock-Elementen und minimalistischen Beats. Bekannte Songs sind „Walk This Way“ (mit Aerosmith), „My Adidas“, „It’s Tricky“ und „You Be Illin’“. Die Produktion von Russell Simmons und Rick Rubin ist prägnant, der Klang roh und rhythmisch, typisch für den East-Coast-Rap der Mitte der 1980er. Das Album etablierte Run-DMC als zentrale Figur im Mainstream-Hip-Hop. Bewertung: Einflussreich und stilprägend, bleibt trotz seines Alters hörenswert.

Some bangers on here - I am generally not into hiphop, but this early stuff is the better choice for me. These guys are just friggin cool.

Fun! A bit repetitive.

6/10… hip hop / rap / *1986

The flow is the same every song, but it sounds good I like the instrumentals too It’s cool that they made a song with Aerosmith I liked that’s song, some of the songs are pretty experimental dude

Tough time with this one: I can appreciate how important this album was at the time it was released, and I know the singles. But because the singles (Walk this Way, My Adidas, It's Tricky) have been prominent for so long, the novelty value is no longer there. So I can appreciate the album - its significance, the production, the overall sound - but I didn't love it. I wonder how it might land for someone with no prior knowledge of RUN-DMC or their hits.

Quoting the movie 'Parasite': "RESPECT!" Do I want to return to these songs? Not really. Do I recognize their breakthroughs and pioneering influence. Absolutely.

I left this listening experience similar to leaving the Barbie movie - the whole thing was fine but the novelty ran off about 10 minutes in

This starts off strong with hits. But, by the end of it, some of the sheen of it started to wear off. I really wonder if this needed a full 40-minute run, or if a shorter, 20-minute EP would have better served it.

I always struggle with classic rap since my entry into the genre came through rappers like Kanye, Kendrick, Jay-Z, Nicki, etc. Often times I find early rap a bit too on-the-nose, but I feel that's entirely due to the lens I'm applying. This album was really good, but lyrically I felt it was a bit anemic. There are certain songs that are genuinely entertaining (You Be Illin'), other songs where the beats are so interesting and exciting (Walk This Way). At other points I felt like there was bluster without much depth or even something interesting to take from it. So I'm back and forth, maybe gaslighting myself a little bit about my own feelings.

This is not my style of rap, still had some solid songs on here.

Dum dum dum dum dum dum dum. Dum dum dum

It's trickaaaayyy

Bangers

This started off slow and I wasn't sure if was going to like it, but it ended with some bangers. Tricky and Walk This Way are iconic, of course and this was a good album to run to.

not my fave - can see how influential it was in hip hop and like the lyrics but the beats are a bit too 80s for me

Amazing 4 song run to open this album, they are just classic. Unfortunately that is the high point of the album and it starts to lose steam throughout. Historically it is a huge album in hip-hop and had a wildly popular crossover hit with Walk This Way. I can appreciate the significance of album but it is just not something I would throw on and listen to all the way through.

Undoubtedly important and influential just not really my thing. It's tricky and walk this way are undeniable classics though. You be illin was pretty funny as well.

It's Tricky and Walk This Way are soooo good. No wonder this put hip hop into the mainstream! I don't enjoy any of the beatboxing.

The hits are undeniable. The rest.... it ain't great.

Fun album.

dumb dumb duMB DUMB DUMB

catchy, a little repetitive

Clever but repetitive. Dated but retro. Reminded me of the Beastie Boys.

too mych

I listened to this one a long time ago, I’ll relisten and see if I still like it Update: it’s quite good. The last little bit drops off in quality but overall I enjoy it.

Not my usual genre or even my usual subset of rap but enjoyed what feels like a foundational album for rap and hip hop today. Didn’t realize how many hits were on this album! The only one I couldn’t do was Hit It Run bc mouth sounds 😹

The first half of the album was really good, but then it sort of started collapsing after the half waypoint. The rest of the songs started becoming either bland, too general, or just not for my taste. However, Proud to Be Black sticks the landing of the album. Despite my comments on this, it's still a good and solid hip-hop record.

Solid album, songs are really catchy and fun.

Instrumental for the growth of hip hop and tons of bangers, but some misses too. it's dragged down by them. a solid 6.5

I liked it more than the last DMC album

Good. Unikalus albumas ir būdas repuoti.

Overall good but nothing amazing.

Groovy beats. Too much Aerosmith. Seems dated. Obviously a bunch of moments that were alluded to by rappers afterward. Probably won’t go back to this one much. Songs added: It’s Tricky

Surprisingly new a couple of the really popular songs. Still very relevant to this day, but overall not a fan. Just didn't like hip-hop from this era. Think their couple of popular hits are very cool for their time for sure.

A classic. Not my particular taste

80s hip hop was so much different than what started in the 90s. It was more innocent and fun and less violent and derogatory towards women, although that’s relative I suppose. I would guess that this album is on the list because of the version of Walk This Way, that’s great and all but the Aerosmith version is much better. However, the guitar solo Joe Perry does on this record is way better than the original. I didn’t exactly enjoy this album, more like tolerated it. Though I did listen to the Walk This Way guitar solo multiple times, extra points for that. 2.5/5

Kinda fun but didn’t personally enjoy listening. Appreciate there unique style and innovation.

Holy groovy. I love 90s rap. I really like the guitar in the title song. Fav song is ‘My Adidas’.

Reasonably. But also outdated ...

I enjoyed it although it lost me a little towards the end

Very different from what I’m used to but I actually enjoyed it a lot! I was slightly familiar with a couple of the songs, but didn’t know much about the group.

Favourite Song: Raising Hell

Favourite Songs: Raising Hell

It’s hard to listen to a whole album of 80s hip hop but there’s lots of good songs including the collaboration with Aerosmith.

I can see the appeal but not my type of music

Flashbacks to going to your friends house after school and playing hours of SSX Tricky. Me and Elise getting tricky. 3.5

Good album. Made want to move.

not really my go-to vibe, but it was nice to find out where so many famous tracks came from!

Some classics but also not a big fan of Run-D.M.C. I respect their impact and legacy but I'd be lying if I said it was as good as other hip hop groups of the era

Easier to listen to than a lot of the stuff around now. First 3 or 4 tracks are pretty solid then I got bored as I usually do with hip hop!

My name is Alex and I'm here to say, these rap songs sound kind of quaint

Expected not to like this but actually a fun album. I recognized a lot of the songs. Want to revisit - might earn a higher rating.

I do not particularly care for hip-hop coming into this, and...this album isn't gonna change that. I did, however, like it more than I expected. It's pretty okay. I can see why it's liked so much and why it's a foundational album. It's just not particularly one for me. Favourite song: It's Tricky (duh. that song fucking rules)

Love the rap rock thing. A lot of classic tunes. Big for my mom. Not my personal fave, but good.

Those 2 songs hard-carry this album. The main problem is that the production/audio-mixing is really poor, definitely feels like this could have more impact with a remaster or something.

Fav Song: It's Tricky WAAAAAY better than the first album holy moly. Decent lyrics but actually good and varied instrumentals this time. The beatboxing track made me laugh out loud though it was so dumb

This was a fun listen, but I've heard all the major singles before. It's so easy to fall into sounds that have been around you since birth. I recognize this isn't usually for me, and I probably won't be playing them more frequently after this either. Fun. Choppy, but well thought out. Musically it sounds like the 80s, but the level of production surpasses the typical drum machine sound. I'm sure this is a few key production techniques away from being a project I really love. 3.4/5

Mixed feelings about this album. Walk this way is a seminal moment in music history. Tricky is a banger. a few other songs are decent enough. Its OK in small doses. But I was so ready for it to be over. This type of call and response rap or whatever its true name is gets old fast

THE COVER, very 80s My Adidas- very wholesome: talking about not liking pimps, represents how emblematic these shoes are for the hip hop community, laid back: 5.5/10 Son of Byford Interlude: fun little beatboxing situation: 6/10 Raising Hell: heavier rock guitar, it's pretty good, prefer My Adidas: 5/10 It's Live: the breakdown where they say "Is it Live" is good, the slapping women line is WILD, the ending is fire: 5/10 Proud to be Black: scratching in the start is HEAT, "Don't worry about what color I am... Because I'll show you how I'll this man can act" encouraging people to be excellent, his Malcom X bar I don't agree with, if black history was a song 😂: 7/10 Dumb Girl: message is good- you know the guy doesn't like you but you stay for his money & has lots of sex & doesn't increase her mind 5/10 It's Tricky: beat is the most exciting yet! They mention how drugs are so easy yet they don't take them: 6/10 Peter Piper: nursery rhymes in rap form, they mention Grandmaster Flash but respectfully (not tearing down others while still being confident): 5/10 Perfection: reminds me of how rhymes used to require good vocabulary You be Illin: don't be a drunkard: 5/10 Hit it Run: the mixing with 'Run' and the beatboxing: 5/10 Walk this Way: the Aerosmith feature is amazing: 7.2/10 *The same beat for every song 😂, lyrics are decent but not super creative, no inventive breakdowns: 5/10- wouldn't listen again

Pretty good. Some prehistoric beats but the rocking songs are great

Now I want to listen to Aerosmith. Felt repetitive

It's a nice album but maybe hasn't aged the best. 3/5

the to be expected album

The run of It's Tricky, My Adidas, Walk This Way is an incredible three tracks. The rest of the record sounds dated now and gets a little repetitive, but it's hard to understate how important this was to bridge the gap of hip hop to the mainstream.

6 This hip hop is not to my taste but I’m always happy to get a hip hop album more please

Guitar solos were pretty sound

39/1001 Back in the day, License to ill was my go to when I wanted to listen to rap. This is almost as good to me but not quite. 6/10

Corny, lighthearted and catchy. I had never heard of this record but I’ve definitely heard a lot of these tracks and they’re bangers. It gets repetitive when you’re listening to the album throughout, and I have to be in a specific mood to want to listen to this. 67/100

Apreciei algumas das letras como a egopick de Is It Live e o black powering em Proud to be Black. Faixa Favorita: Walk This Way (feat. Aerosmith)

Always more of an NWA man myself.

Giving it a three because of the influence and the Aerosmith song that slaps.

No surprises (already heard at least half the record), super cool. TIL that Atmosphere's 'Shoes' interpolates 'Perfection'. Definitely prefer the more rock-oriented tracks to the b-boy ones (prob bc the rock tracks have riffs and the b-boy tracks mostly use the same beat with scratches) but can't deny that there are bangers all over this one. Keepers: Whole album except 'Dumb Girl', 'Son of Byford', (maybe 'Is It Live' and 'Hit It Run'?).

Classic, but it feels a bit repetitive

Old school hip hop. Classic "It's tricky" is on here. The rest is okay (Walk this way was good though).

I’m not a huge fan of 80s’ hip hop as it is usually very simple and very repetitive, but this one is a lot more varied and energetic. There’s some rock influences, which I enjoyed, the flows are good, the rapping is decent. Pretty good album. It doesn’t push any boundaries, but it’s enjoyable nonetheless. 7/10

This might be one of the most bare-bones hip-hop records I've ever heard just because how rudimentary the beats are and how little detail are added to them in general. In fact, the song 'Perfection' only has rapping and drums. Nothing more. So what truly shines in the project is the incredible chemistry between the two rappers and how fun their delivery and tone is. For me the highlights would be 'Peter piper', 'It's Tricky', 'Walk This Way' and "You Be Illin' ", with the latter one having some of the funniest lyrics I've ever read talking about who a guy ordered a Big Mac in a KFC or how one of them mistakenly ate dog food as dinner. Hilarious. Unfortunately, I think being an album so simple works against it favor and makes a bit too repetitive, but it manages to be solid.
