Reviews (page 10 of 13)

A nice work of early hip hop with multiple notable tracks ( it’s tricky ) and an Aerosmith feature … it’s not something I’d play back too often but it’s a fun enough listen and the raw energy is enjoyable

It’s the black Beastie Boys!

18 and Completely ignoring this. Checked back now, understand the means

All it's cracked up to be

I am sure we will get the first 2 albums on this list. This album is probably the weakest of the three. More commercial maybe. It mostly held up by the super hit, Its Tricky, but on the whole, not a terrible listen. Somewhere between a 3 and 4

The first four tracks are the most famous and really showcase what to expect. I'd call this "boombox rap", it's made to be played loud for everyone to hear. Not a big fan of the type of the rap flavor, feels like I'm constantly being yelled at lol

I love the rock cuts they use instead of generic electro filler. And who doesn't love Tricky?

Pretty good, a couple of recognisable songs but don't know if I'd be going back to listen to it again.

A few great tracks

It's alright.

mwah, niet super. Leuk om een keertje te horen maar niet voor herhaling vatbaar. 6/10

i loved this album at the time , but realistically it’s a bit sonically repetitive these days . some classics songs on there though

Better then I thought

3 out of 5. This is probably the most fun rap album I've heard so far.

80s hip hop is a bit like rock n roll 55-64ish - neccessary, but dated

decent rap, and "Walk This Way"

Run DMC, er...walked? so that Beastie Boys could run!

OK, first of all, the tom toms at the start of Dumb Girl are straight off Down Under. This is better than the Beastie Boys, but it’s still no better than the singles off the album. Didn’t mind it, wouldn’t choose to listen to it.

It's so hard to separate the out-and-out monster influence that Run DMC has had on music, and the actual listening of the album, because it's clear that these guys helped shape music from then 80s onwards, and yet outside of the two or three banger singles the rest is just kind of... Meh? The flow is a bit one-speed, the drum machines sound incredibly cheesy nowadays and there's not much to write home about. Not going to be one of my all time faves, that's for sure. Also, Tricky is a series of limericks and once I heard that I couldn't stop focussing on it. Don't know what to do with that information, but now you have it too. Faves: Tricky, Walk This Way

Interesting. Had only really listened to tricky and Walk this Way featuring Aerosmith. Guitar Hero was such a simple time, sampling great rock classics. The album is just okay. The mix of heavier drums and record warping is distinct and I suppose that’s great. I think that’s all I have to say.

Grand, like.

Bit cheesy but I like it

Fine I suppose. Tricky is very irritating though isn't it? It feels like what nerds think hip-hop might be, and it was in a terrible film that I can't now place. On the other hand, they do know how to write catchy tunes, and I sang my Adidas to myself quite a lot today.

++: It's Tricky, Walk This Way, You Be Illin' +: Peter Piper, My Adidas, Is It Live, Hit It Run, Dumb Girl Son 0f Byford +-: Perfection, Raising Hell 7,3/10

I don't know this was fun and annoying at the same time.

This was pretty decent. Not usually my kind of music, but I enjoyed bits of it. 3/5

The begining of an era but its not really my favorite

Iconic and funky

ttaaltk wthtsi wahyaw

Best old school hip-hop album Too dated on the production side

Okay album

Great album. First 4 songs are as solid as it comes.

Liked the mixing with the samples

-this is decent, has some really catchy songs on it. Most notably of course It’s Tricky, which is one of my favorite pre-00s rap songs of all time. None of the other tracks quite lived up to the hype in my opinion but it never got too terrible -Favorites are It’s Tricky, Walk This Way, and You Be Illin’

3/5 Some nice tracks, though I felt the type of songs became a little repetitive halfway through.

so funnnnn (i always thought “it’s tricky” was a disney original song 💀)

Fun but not my style

Good music. I can feel the beat and can get down with it. Favorite song is You be Illin

Not bad.

Sounds clunky at times. I couldn’t make it through it’s tricky. Low 3.

still don't really like old hip-hop too much, but this i don't mind. Its fun, i see the appeal. enjoyable listen

3- Stars (7/15)

me personally, i like the beastie boys

80s hip hop which varies in style between beat breaks and rock samples. A lot of catchy tracks, but also a lot of crap.

Dated but foundational hip-hop. It's Tricky holds up great. Walk This Way was my least favourite track but that's just because of my distaste for 80s rock.

I was never into these guys. But I have heard a couple of these songs. It's Tricky, and Walk This Way. It was aight. 3 stars

Old school hip hop. I feel that it was amazing for its time and laid the groundwork for a lot of what came and that it deserves respect for that. Still, though, it sounded dated to me and I think there's just better stuff that's been released since. Kind of crazy to have two songs as big as it's "It's Tricky" and "Walk This Way" on one album.

Do you like fast going songs? The album Raising Hell By Run-D.M.C has many songs that you might like. I like the drums they have, very simple but it fits the songs. I also like their rapping and the fact that they changed a song's lyrics from singing into rapping. I think I would play this album if I needed energy in the morning so I would recommend this album to anyone.

I don’t like rap but this is not terrible.

Funky and full of ground zero for the term “gangster rap”

Had a couple songs I enjoyed (sort of). Walk this Way & It's Tricky.

Some nice songs (Walk This Way, It’s Tricky, Raising Hell) but the production really stops me from enjoying this too much. Revolutionary though, etc

Not really able to listen to the whole thing.

yeah i got a dog but before i was born

Had to bring aerosmith for a song

AWWWWW IM BLACK YALL AND IM BLACK YALL AND IM BLACKER THAN BLACK COS IM BLACK YALL IM BLACK YALL IM BLACK YALL COS IM BLACKER THAN BLACK COS IM BLACK YALL IM BLIGGIDY BLACK BLACKER THAN BLACK BLACK IM BLACKER THAN BLACK YO BECAUSE IM BLACK AND IM BACK

Vieux rap mais 2/3 son sympa

I'm good with this. Solid usually synth beat. Sometimes cheesy rhymes. I'm not going to listen to it over and over, but I won't turn it off if it comes on.

BEST SONGS: - Is It Live - Hit It Run

Chillan

The classic album that was genre defining. And it was enjoyable with my morning coffee.

On the one hand, it did do John-the-Baptist service. On the other, Run DMC did (perhaps unfairly? I dunno) find themselves headless rather quickly. Groundbreaking as Walk This Way is, I don't think they fully earned the sobriquet of ground breakers. There is too much sameness in this album for that.

As appreciative as I am of the positive messages of most of these songs, half the album was spent introducing themselves and one of them telling us several different times that his last name was not McDonald's. That's a little weird. But "Tricky," "You Be Illin'," "My Adidas," and "Dumb Girl" were all pretty good.

This has some staying power, but Dumb Girl doesn't age well. Walk This Way is great until Steven Tyler butts in. Tricky is a classic. The rest is a stark reminder of how far hip-hop has come in the last 40+ years.

Started off sooooo good and then drops off.

Run DMC the only Rap I can stand

Some classic beats and hits - clearly an influencial album for the genre. Not really my style, and I don't think there is anything that made me want to revisit this record in particular. "Dumb Girl" is an unfortunate relic of the time, but overall its good for historical context.

I know everyone loves these guys, and they are supposedly rap pioneers. I’m not that impressed. The music is not timeless.

pretty solid album. Was a nice break from the rock albums that are suggested here.

Enjoyed. Expected more punch

I actually quite liked this album. I had heard a lot of it before, and I suppose familiarity breeds acceptance.

An old school hip hop classic that integrates more rock influence. Definitely an influential, landmark album, though I’m lukewarm on it. The first 4 song run of Peter Piper - it’s Tricky - My Adidas - Walk This Way is a powerhouse, though the album doesn’t hold my attention nearly as much after that. Beats are slim but some catchy - mostly a computerized (or just very 80s-produced) sounding bouncy drums with some turntables or occasional guitar. Some decent raps but nothing to write home about, though they do the 1-2 MC punch well. Innovative for its time, but just feels ok now.

a bit samey

I enjoyed It's Tricky and Walk This Way.

Definitely not my favorite era of Hip-Hop but this album has some absolute classics. It's Tricky, My Adidas, Walk This Way, Hit It Run, Raising Hell, and You Be Illin' are all great. The instrumentation of the whole album is pretty special and feels revolutionary for the time especially when they implement heavier sounds and guitars. The lyrics are interesting but when listening through as a complete album, I got a little board with the cadence and lyrics that didn't (to me) say anything profound. Fully aware that this isn't an album written for me but there is a lot of modern Hip-Hop that hits me on a deeper level because the lyrics aren't just clever, they are smart and challenging.

What?! There's such a thing as rap without excessive profanity, misogyny, violent themes and anger?! This album is a lot of fun but it starts to sound same-y and repetitive pretty quickly.

1. The opening of this song is weird dont want it. Production is good but that bell thing is a bit much 6/10 2. I like the chorus but if it keeps repeating I might start fussing Production is great No fussing 8/10 3. production is great how did rick rubin produce this and also system of a down best so far 8.5/10 4. This might be a cover Don't like the chorus but everything else is fine I wish RUN-DMC did the chorus 7/10 5. I dont like the snare but I like that weird noise Cool 8/10 6. Don't like the hi hat too loud :( kinda boring 5/10 7. this mixing is ASS vocals are quite and then the chorus is wayyy too loud but the verses are good 5/10 8. i like the verses and how there is not a vocal chorus its like perma heat and the production is good best so far 8.6/10 9. I like that brass best so far 8.7/10 10. I don't like the repeating "dumb" mixing is bad the instrumental is too loud too long 3/10 11. interlude that doesnt add anything 3/10 12. mixing is bad again :( why does is suddenly get quieter I like the verses though 6.5/10 overall: for its time, production, verses, writing, etc. is pretty good. But more often then not it just doesn't hold up. 6/10

Big points for innovation but I got bored after the first few tracks.

There's something about old school hip hop that hits in a fun positive way. Raising Hell exemplifies this all the way through. While it may be considered cheesy compared with modern rap/hip hop it's hard not to have a blast with this album. My suburban white-boy ass tends to side with old school hip hop compared to modern stylings so this is much more up my alley than other rap and hip hop albums on the list. 3.56 stars

A few absolute bangers, but good lord this gets repetitive fast. 3/5

Samples go hard Love Aerosmith. Wild they were on a debut album Dumb dumb dumb

Great 80s hip hop album, with some absolute classics, desveres to be on the list, but just sounds too dated to be more than 1 listen.

Sonically a lot of it was the exact same, but some classics on here.

I love rap and this was a disappointment. It's hard for me to go back to the 80's era of rap when after knowing that Dr. Dre is about to revolutionize the genre with his approach to beats- I want to grade this on a curve because it's so foreign to what we know the genre to be today but it sounds really dated, the beats are worse, the flow is worse - nothing really special about this to me.

Was a little slow but decent opening lines.

There are a couple hits and some deeper tracks that are pretty good, but overall a lot of this sounds pretty similar. Wildly influential, changed the game, but ultimately fairly middle of the road for me today.

A quintessential three-star pick. Some notable songs, but not a classic.

Kind of cool to think how different this album is from the previous rap albums.

Entertaining except “Dumb Girl” was pretty ridiculous

This sounds soooo dated. Doesn't really hold up today, but you have to respect classics like It's Tricky and Walk This Way. However, my favorite track is Raising Hell also really surprised me with the metal-heavy beat.

There's some good songs here. The famous singles "Tricky" and "Walk This Way" are alright. The title track is my favourite. I also liked "You Be Illin", a song that's referenced in the top comment. A few songs are a let down though. I'll give "Raising Hell" 3 stars.

It was ground breaking. Sounds dated in 2024. Still some very good songs 3 stars.

Nearly wanted to take a mark off for the bear boxing, which is so cringy and dated and more than anything, just sounds bad. But the rest of it is great. Very high 3 to 4. Will decide later

Not my thing, but an iconic hit parade nevertheless!

Energetic and fun, but some of these rhymes are pretty dumb. The singles are all solid. Fave Songs: It's Tricky, Walk This Way, My Adidas, You Be Illin'

Thought it would get old fast, but actually was enjoyable all the way through

5/10 *yawn* Thanks guys, I do be illin'. Now can you see yourselves out. 6-18-2024

Kuunneltu, parit klassikot messissä

Slightly similar feel to Pauls Boutique by Beastie Boys although much more refined and better flow in my opinion. Not my favorite, the sound of the DJ-discs scratching/rewinding can get a little much sometimes. Great album to skate along with!

Not a fan of rap but this is a good album.

Raising Hell was a pretty good album all things considered. It reminded me of the Beastie Boys album i looked at a long while back (which makes sense since they both released at around the same time) with both of their mixes of rap and rock. I honestly do think this album is better though. The highs of the album felt higher than anything Licensed To Ill could do and its lows were not nearly as low. This album still did have its fair share of lows here and there but it's highs more than made up for it. This is definitely one quintessential rap rock album. Best Song: Raising Hell Worst Song: Perfection (Ironically enough)

I totally love the old school hip hop vibes, without the outright profanity, with this album. Too short though! Listen again:yes Purchase for my collection: probably Favourite Song: it’s tricky

It’s Tricky and Walk This Way are peak songs. Rest of album is fun, but there is definitely a different cadence to their rapping style.

Hit and miss.

pretty enjoyable but will never listen again

Always fun to hear time capsules like this.

Started out good. But then it started getting repetitive. Same formula for each song. It's not a bad formula, but I was getting tired of it towards the end. Album was average for me.

There's something about being a standard. Standards change. And as revolutionary as this was when it (and Aerosmith) exploded in the mid 80's, their protegees made much more interesting beats and lyrics. ATCQ, Beasties, De La Soul, and on and on. Sure, there's some good shit here. But some of it is just plain ol' stupid (Dumb Girl) or just kinda average (You Be Illin'). They're giant shoulders to stand on, sure -- but I think the shoulder-standers perfected what they started.

Not bad, a blueprint of what was to come next

Trailblazer but hip hop as evolved a lot since this dropped.

Good album. Some familiar songs on here which was nice. Just didn’t have too quality throughout. 3.5/5 Might listen again

Classic

kinda cool at first but gets super repetitive i gotbored

Nursery rhymes over drums have never gone harder

Almost painfully 80s. I enjoyed the cover of Walk this Way. Most of the songs were not very exciting to me unfortunately. Won't be going back to listen. I do like the energy of music during this time though, it's clear that they really enjoy making music and give it their all.

Enjoyed this except for that Aerosmith track, which is so cursed

Iconic music, but not my fav.

why didn't i enjoy this more hmm

This is a few reverb fart sound effects away from being a shitpost. Enjoyable in a really goofy way, even if it hasn't aged the best. Just two guys being dudes and writing dumb shit - I respect it. 3/5.

Fine. It's def Run-DMC. Important pioneers but not my jam.

More classics!

Album starts off strong but starts to fall off and can't keep up with the first few tracks. Lyrics fluctuate between interesting and corny/childish. Undeniable 80's sound and production. I can appreciate what this did for hip hop which gets it an extra star.

Peter Piper, It's Tricky, Walk This Way, Raising Hell, and Proud to Be Black are all amazing tracks, the rest are all quite mediocre though; nothing awful, just mediocre. The highs are high though.

Klasyka ale wszystkie podobne i się szybko nudzi

Well, at least it’s not another obscure UK band from the late 80’s /90’s. But it seems like interesting albums have been few and far between for a couple of weeks. But, 191 albums in, Hip Hop is my least favorite genre, so…. I’m familiar w/ the cover of “Walk This away”, and that’s something. So how’s it sound? Well, as hip-hop go, it's not angry, more upbeat and fun. Not overloaded with drug and violence references. Nay an N-word. that's pretty refreshing. But it's still hip-hop with shouted, simple rhymes and lots of "scratching". But in the realm of hip-hop, it's better than others I've heard. 3/5

When an album has two of the most iconic rap songs of the 20th Century, and they happen to be some of the first rap songs that 90s kids had memorized word for word, you’ve gotta give it its flowers. I was worried about how well the album was gonna hold up all these years later, and some parts were a little dated, but overall it was better than expected.

I am enjoying the "beats" An occasion clever lyric. Not really anything else. To each...

Classic

Production dated but punchy nonetheless. Walk This Way and the other rap rock crossovers are obvious entreaties to a rock listening public but I think they’ve aged poorly. Some great verses, others questionable or generally mid. That said, the album is ambitious, exciting and well produced. Important despite its pitfalls. 3.5

There's some absolute classics here (walk this way and tricky etc) they've got a clear sound that works very well it's clean and got a specific groove. Sounds a little dated to me but that's just because jts not my favourite kinda sound

Short and sweet and funky and nostalgic. Favourite track: It's Tricky (White Chicks innit!)

Expected a lot, but was bit disappointed, 40 minutes of similar beats made me not-focus on the music after some time. Many just too much fun for me, gimme Public Enemy any time.

I can see how some would like it, but ultimately not for me

Pretty good

This had me dancing in my chair loooolll. I really enjoyed the title track. I think it was hard for the album to live up to the first 4 songs which were brilliant. Peter Piper was 100 percent my favourite. Brilliant song

I loved the texture of the first song with chimes/bells. Tricky, Walk This Way, and one other, are classics. The roots of many future rappers can be heard in several tracks.

Fine but a lot of sameness

iconic

One of the more timeless sounding old school rap albums I’ve heard recently. The obvious favorites were “It’s Tricky” and “Walk This Way”

Some classics on this album. Not typically in my music rotation but can appreciate the music and the influence the band had.

Whole album kinda sounded the same. That might be sacrilege, but meh

Massive influence but awful working music

Run DMC. So iconic, but I feel as though it’s a bit repetitive for a whole album? Clearly a super influential album and a real moment in time for late 90s rap

An important album in the history of rap and hip-hop and all the better for those tracks that meld Run DMC's rhymes with hard rock riffs, most notably Walk this Way. The first half of the album is the stronger, the latter tracks stand out less.

Same as with The Chronic, I just don't really like hip-hop too much. I liked the instrumentals, very well produced. Again, I understand why this album is on the list (unlike Antichrist Superstar), and I can't say I vehemently disliked any of the songs. 3/5. Favourites: Walk This Way (feat. Aerosmith).

Classic rap album that white people love. 99% chance you will hear at least one of these songs at a basement frat party. I always say “My Adidas” when i put my adidas on.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1RaBdSCjAY You Be Illin made my day though.

perfect for hyping up before the date.

Banging album, but gets repetitive in the second half

Love and Hate this album. Love the songs and samples... hate the resuscitation of Aerosmith's career.

I appreciate the importance of this album in the history of hip hop. I've never listened to it until now, and I enjoyed much of it. There's some really great beats/drum work throughout, and the consistency of this is the album's major strength. There's also some great DJ work and other great sounds as well. I default to liking the tracks with guitar on them best but there were several others I enjoyed. Lyrics very rarely mean anything to me...so I didn't pay attention to what they were saying, but the use of their voices as instruments I enjoyed and appreciated. Favorite tracks: It's Tricky, My Adidas, Walk This Way, Perfection, Raising Hell.

Enjoyed it.

I liked but not that much

Did not finish

Classic rap album.

Amazing to think that the first hip hop album to reach such mainstream success and get a Grammy nomination didn't come out until 1986. And that it took rock elements and a cover of Aerosmith to make it happen, acting like a Trojan horse for the entire genre. But it definitely worked. Dated as it is, some of these songs still work. The inclusion of the song 'Dumb Girl' is unfortunate but there are plenty of hits here to help ignore it.

Classique ayant eu une influence assez gigantesque (Michael Scott et Dwight Schrute diraient la même chose avec leur fameux ''Straight Outta Scranton'') mais je préfère justement ce qui est venu par la suite.

Not the hugest hip hop fan. I know how important this is. There’s some fun tunes. But there is a corniness that’s inescapable from early hip hop. 3/5

Raw, in your face beats, samples, and rhymes. Peter Piper is the standout track, making a Bob James sample an iconic part of hip hop. It’s Tricky and My Adidas are bangers too. From Rock This Way on though, the samples and beat programming become more and more clunky as you go making for a good but not great album experience.

Producer: what’s the idea then guys? RUN DMC: (hits Casio keyboard demo button)’this sounds cool’ Producer: ‘oh wow. Ok. So what are you going to rap about?’ RUN DMC: ‘Have you ever noticed that Little Bo Peep rhymes with sheep?’ Better than their first album - there’s more cowbell in it 3.1

Aww god, some absolute bangers and clearly super influential but after the first few tracks the quality drops right off and it all starts blurring into one shouty track

Assez bon, mais j'étais pas tant dans ce mood là

Fun album, with some good beats. Seems to be repetitive at times.

This was better and more interesting than their self-titled, but that's probably because their hit singles were off of this record. I have the same stylistic gripes with Run DMC as before, but this is slightly improved. 3/5.

Definitely not bad, but I did not need to hear this before I die

Except 2nd song, boring early rap album

I actually was pleasantly surprised for my first little random album. The first half of the album was so much fun, but then the second half started to lose my attention a little bit. Lyrically I cannot tell you what the album is about but sonically it was a blast. Fave songs: probably Walk This Way, Peter Pan and It’s Tricky (predictable).

Definitely not a usual genre for me! Can hear how recent albums have been influenced by this though. Knew more songs than I thought I was going to (well just tricky and walk this way) Got a little bit same samey in terms of beat and cadence of the rapping Lyrically some problemos - women, gay people ya know but like it’s rap from the 80s so Perfection was a fun one Like that it’s usually a conversation btwn the two members Very cool to hear rock instruments with rap - even if no guitar beat is usually drum set Raisin hell was highlight You be illin funny Dumb girl was weird vibes, slut shamming but she’s also meant to be 16 it seems?

Not my favorite style of hip-hop but you can't deny how foundational it is for the whole movement.

Hey, c’était pas pire ça pour du rap, mon endoctrinement c’en vient bien

Solid 3.5.

While I acknowledge the cultural significance of It's tricky and Walk this way, I think the rest of the album ages fairly poorly (other than You be Illin). Best Song: It's Tricky Worst Song: Dumb Girl Best Lyric: "It's McDaniels, not McDonald's. These rhymes are Darryl's, the burgers are (Ronald's)"

Never thought it would bring back all the good ol' days with Mac from my SSX Tricky era.

Liked other rap music better. Content and lyrics fairly simplistic.

Hip hop

Oh wow, I wasn't expecting this album in this list, but here we go - I like the song with Aerosmith... who doesn't... but all songs had their own typical style, so they were pretty similar to listen for the first time. Back then - pretty cool album, but nowadays - doesn't impress me that much.

Idk. Too corny for me I think

The influence and importance of the album can’t be denied, but some of the production sounds very thin and the rhymes are a bit clunky and basic in places. Some of the songs retain tremendous impact - most notably It’s Tricky - but its overall not as compelling as its strongest moments.

Opening 1-2-3-4 is great, the rest palls by comparison

Not really my style of music. Fun to listen to

Baby's first hip-hop album. I mean that literally since I think this was the first (non-christian lmao) rap album I purchased with my own funds (a $10 itunes gift card naturally.) Rick Rubin's production lends a great guiding hand here, the drums knock hard, and his electric guitar flourishes are an interesting touch that show an alternative vision of how hip-hop could have evolved. The Peter Piper beat low key still goes hard, but those humpty-dumpty ass flows are so dated. The drums on "perfection" are cool. I could not possibly care less about "It's Tricky" or "Walk This Way" due to years and years of overexposure. This album is an interesting case study, feel like the way in which this period of hip-hop is considered to be dated is a little oversimplified. Sure the flows are simplistic and rudimentary here but the interplay between vocalists is still exciting and feels fresher than say the Beastie Boys' fratty tendencies from this same time period. Plus the production on the back half is really good in a lot of places, and this stays crisp and lean at only 39 minutes. Compared to a lot of other so-called golden 80's hip-hop albums this works a lot better, and if you want an exemplar of early hip-hop's block party rocking origins you can do far worse, even if many of the touchstones of this sound have fallen away as the genre evolved.

Fun experimentation with music and sounds with good beats and cool vibes. Three stars

From the description, a truly iconic album. Highlights: That cymbal sample in Peter Piper! It's tricky (from that one game I played), walk this way (don't think I've heard this version before) The beat boxing in hit it run is a little bit ridiculous 3* overall

A pretty good hip hop album, definitely a classic. Just not my favorite. Top tracks: It’s Tricky, Walk This Way

some iconic singles but a lot of this is pretty samey

There are some bangers on here but they’re balanced out by some incredibly corny songs and some straight-up bad ones. Hard to deny their influence, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it.

Listened to half the album - good fun, felt very 80's and was a nice context for songs I had heard before but didn't have a great deal of setting for. Should return to and finish the album; I jumped off because of the lyrics (not content, just that there were lyrics

I've seen this album before, because of the "it's tricky" song. Actually it started of real good, they rap good In the first song. I like that sound idk how to explain it though. I would go with this easily, that's why I like it. That sound makes it better. Well the second song is too popular not to know. First time I know a song here actually. It's catchy, the background instrumental makes it better. This is also the one I would be able to rap, which makes it better. Wow I really like these guys' vibe. They rap soo smoothly and differently. Third song and it's entertaining as fuck. I like that there is some instrumentals in it to make it sound rich, and they did right. I have 4th song in my liked songs playlist, but I doubt if I have ever listened to it. Though there's aerosmith in it and makes the song much cooler. Chorus is not a good one. Definitely rock rap was really fun to listen to. Finally rap came in(or there was and I fell asleep) 5th song and it's kinda slow but i don't mind it. Their voice is naturally unique and they rap with the voice they'd talk which is much better than like drake's one. 6th song this one's annoyingly slow, chorus comes too fast. They finish each others sandwiches, quite fun. One of the worst songs because it got repetitive. Now 7th song has some energyy, the background instrument is loud and fun, and they play with their voices more. It's rocky the 8th song too, now there's drums and guitars superior. Ooh the instrumental short break was really good. Well listening to the album is not the best to explore it, because I'm kinda bored with the same vibe. 9th song had a weirdly best start. It's almost same as the other songs, but obviously different instruments. It had a jazzy pre-verse instrument. 10th song is what I expected, I do like the way he says "dumb girl", especially when there's glitchy sound "du-du-dum-dum". Not bad at all, loved it. 11th song is an interlude with the beat boxing, it's different at least. 12th and last song is again same. They changed the beat and the way they rap around it. Well I feel like it's tricky is still the most catchy one, that chorus has everything, other songs are just rap, which ain't bad, just missing smth. This is black anthem in its way, just not a popular song so. Well the way it started I was gonna rate it 4 stars, but because all the things apparently have a same vibe, I lost interest in it so it's actually 3.5, and I'm not rounding it up, and giving it 3 stars. It was my first hip-hop album here, and I loved it however I expected more bops like "it's tricky".

Not a music genre I enjoy, but I can't in good conscience give this album less than 3 stars. I get it.

Old school rap with a bit of a rock twist. Sounded okay, but I prefer the self-titled debut.

Dope, energetic, drags on a bit in the end

The first successful hip hop album. The sounds come a long way since then. Some of the songs are still bangers

“It’s Tricky” is undeniable. Of this era and genre, this is the best. Is it my favorite? No. But I can dig it. 3.5/5

Not my bag, but they do it well.

TRICKY TRICKY TRICKAAY

Legendary album!! Its tricky is so great, i just dont think this is something I would play on its own very often

It is a classic, and one of Aersmith’s favorites. I’m sure

A little too goofy for me

Not normally a rap listener, and cringe at most modern rap, but actually enjoyed most of this, feels like people with actual talent made it

clearly a classic, but def was my first time listening to some of the non mainstream hits.

It's an important part of hip-hop history and Walk This Way did quite a lot of things, but to me it's just alright. You Be Illin' is cheesy as hell and a little fun though. This was my first album with 1001 albums so I'm hoping there's more hip-hop and rap in the future.

Besides this album's influence on Hip Hop it is fun to listen to. The album also elevated Hip Hop to mainstream audiences mostly due to the Aerosmith's song from Toys in the Attic, Walk This Way. The song was everywhere (radio, MTV) and was a fun listen for both Hip Hop and Rock fans. It's also interesting to pick up on the sampling of My Sharona on It's Tricky. I agree with Tim that the first 5 songs on the album are a great listen, but the drums become a bit wearisome after that. Favorite Songs: Pied Piper, It's Tricky, Is It Live, Proud to Be Black.

The drums hit hard from the first track, and kind of just continue the same way through the whole record. Which kind of grates on you by the time the last track is finished. However, the four track run of Peter Piper, It's Tricky, My Adidas and Walk This Way is undeniable. The rest of Raising Hell is a little underwhelming, but still a good listen overall. Fav tracks: It's Tricky, My Adidas, Peter Piper, Proud to be Black

I thought side one was pretty good, but when it comes to me being as interested in side two... Well, let's just say that it's tricky. Well, not as much as rocking a rhyme that's right on time, true, but still.

I feel like the easiest comparison to make for me is Beastie Boys’ Licensed To Ill,both from the same era however despite how much I like Licensed To Ill, I wasn’t big on Raising Hell.Run-DMC aren’t as charismatic as the Beastie Boys and the beats are largely less interesting on this project as well. There’s the obvious highlights like Walk This Way and It’s Tricky but apart from those I wasn’t really big on this album.

More of an album that's got the strong stuff in the front, but still some decent tracks nonetheless.

I have to rate this album for what it is: probably the endgame of the Sugarhill Gang-era style of rap, while setting the stage for rap to properly enter the mainstream behind such a commercially safe album. Without the confidence in themselves & the genre as a whole that exists in this album, then I can’t imagine the genre really taking off like it did for the rest of the decade and the ‘90s onward. By every modern standard, I think it’s a mediocre album, and I personally can’t rate it any higher than a 3… but it’s not a BAD album. A little cheesy, sure, but that’s the sacrifice of making such a safe album.

I've never listened through a full Run D.M.C. album before. I was a bit concerned after the first song that it was going to be a struggle to get through. But the rest of the album went a bit smoother. There's definitely some bangers and iconic songs on here. I appreciate the uniqueness of their style, but some of the constant yelling and interjections gets annoying. But also works very well on some songs.

Fun, great beats, busy

Recognize a couple of the songs; I’ve heard them before but didn’t know where they came from. I can hear the objective quality but honestly the extremely masculine energy of the album is a lot for me

Like the album itself, I lack inspiration to say anything praiseworthy about the album.

Esta bueno, pero el genero musical al que pertenece no me gusta

Good vibes

Shit be illing

Its good, but i think its just a bit dated. Worthwhile to listen to as a cultural artifact.

Surprised at how strangely nothing this was? Not bad but not great either

It wasn't terrible, but the messaging felt mixed at times and really took me out of it.

Kidz Bop rap. It’s Tricky and Walk This Way are classics, but a lot of their rapping lacks diversity and isn’t super interesting.

I was surprised - this didn't turn my crank as well as I thought it would. I remember loving Run DMC when I was a kid - they were even on Sesame Street! But I found this to be a bit... silly? It's def got some great rhymes and some amazing production... I wonder if my taste for this was 'off' a bit because we had Licensed To Ill/Beastie Boys this week also and I found it to be a bit juvenile compared to their later work... this maybe just gave me the same feeling of that 80's hip-hop being too silly. The cultural impact of these 3 guys is undeniable - this record didn't do it for me. Still pretty great listen though - 3 stars

Занимљив :) 7/10

I can appreciate that this paved the way for music as we know it today while still being very easy to listen to and enjoyed, even today. The first half of the album was much better than the second half, imo.

It's fun and good

Classic

This album was huge for black hip hop drilling much deeper into the American psyche than its predecessors like Grandmaster Flash. All these songs still sound pretty catchy after all this time. Love the cowbell and all the beats.

I get this is important but man does it sound dated. The evolution of hip hop in the 5-7 years after this is huge.

Pretty good. Is Run DMC's Walk This Way the best thing Aerosmith was ever part of? Probably. Might not have as much variety in the beats as Paul's Boutique but the vocal delivery is so much better. music: appreciated. (⌐■_■)

I really like Run DMC and this record in particular has a lot of very sick songs on it. It can be a bit hard to get past how often their cadence sounds like “My name is [name], and I’m here to say,”

Classic but too much high hat

Obviously a classic, but other than a few singles, I found it boring.

2.5 i am conflicted about this! the only two i added to my liked songs were the two big ones that i knew already so technically a rating of 2.5 would be fair because that's just average. but i really jammed out at the start and had expectations that i would rate it a lot higher and there wasn't anything i actively disliked. i think i just really want to stop rating every album around the 2-3 mark so i'm trying to convince myself that i really love things that i don't :(

Good, but not as good as I hoped.

Not as bad as I was expecting

Classic but so dated. A few good songs but mostly a novelty at this point

Liked a couple of the songs and appreciate the context of when it came out but won’t relisten to most. Rating: 3.4

Pleasant enough slice of classic hip-hop/ beatbox/ rap. It's staggering to think that this album dropped shortly before Public Enemy's first album release. The big hits are great, particularly Tricky, which has endured the test of time more than Walk This Way in my opinion. The rest is a bit lacklustre and some of the tracks haven't aged well.

Not my genre but ok to listen to

Very yell-y, 2 songs that are classics, the rest is a great example of the genre of its time.

Samples, rap-rock, this album was very lovely to hip-hop (as far as Wikipedia is concerned). I'm sure it sounded like these guys were from outer space, how cool to hear these guys in the 1980s!

Iconic and groundbreaking at the time, hip hop wouldn’t be the same with out this record. They are so direct and energetic moving toward an album concept rather than singles. I’d give this 3.5 if I could. A few tracks didn’t age that well but the ones that did are barnstormers

This is the kind of Hip Hop that I can respect. Pity that you can find it hardly anywhere anymore, after everyone wanted to become "gangsta". I especially like the cross-over bits, It's Tricky and Walk This Way are the obvious standouts. 3/5

The 90's girl in me gets it and feels loyal to loving this sound... but really? I feel like my IQ is dropping by listening to it.... I find it to be... Young..... that said, 3 for creativity.... but It does seem like kindergartners made it big.

Good nostalgia listen. Gets a bit repetitive, hasn't aged as well as sold albums on this list

Classic rap/hip hop?

Strong 90s vibe. Fun to listen to, though I like a bit more variety.

Clearly very influential album with a few really good songs, but I didn't like that a lot of them were basically just precussion... Slam poetry with extra steps. Either way, this album be illin'.

I understand the relevance of this album - it moved theneedlw back in the day. However, I was never a big fan. Although some real good classics, and songs thatI had not heard which were decent, I am still not overly impressed.

iconic walk this way cover, and "tricky" is all time. I respect its place in history but the rest of the tracks don't speak to me

Pretty great album that has one foot planted in the future sound of what hip hop becomes. Walk This Way was a huge deal when it came out, right? I can see it. It was way better than the Aerosmith album we had the other day, which came out the same time! Immediately compelling. No doubt many artists heard that and though, we've gotta do something like that. "It's Tricky" was the title of "SSX Tricky," a game I played one billion times as a kid. They're fun and I like fun hip hop. A little in the middle sounded pretty dated. Good times! 3/5

A 2.6. A late 80s (90s for me) souvenir of cool rap.

It's got plenty of catchy songs, but also a bunch that are just quite samey. I really like the addition of rock guitars with rapping over the top. There's a lot of similarities with people like the Beastie Boys, only their voices aren't quite as grating. I wouldn't listen to the whole thing again, but there's definitely stand-outs that raise the bar overall. Walk This Way is iconic. Tricky has tons of energy. I had flashbacks to SSX Tricky on PS2. Tricky Tricky Tricky Tricky!

Not my usual jam. I didn't think I would know any songs off this album but I actually do know a few. I actually like it and I didn't think I would. I liked Peter Piper ok, It's Tricky one a lot, My Adidas not as much. Of course I love Walk This Way, that's always been a jam. I took a break about halfway through before listening to the rest of the album. Is It Live I didn't like that much, it sounds more like the stereotypical rap that I never liked, although still melodic. Really didn't like Hit It Run. Too rappy. I like Raising Hell a bit, sounds more rock and roll with the guitars, but still too hardcore rappy. You Be Illin' is one I remember from when it was played on the radio, but I never heard it much. It's a good track. Dig that bass line. Dumb Girl is pretty good. Didn't really like Son of Byford; thankfully, it was pretty short. Proud to Be Black is kind of boring and basic. So basically I like about half the tracks on this album. Won't be buying it, though. I would give Perfection about the same rating as Is It Live, maybe a little lower.

Undeniably great! Just not what I would listen to on repeat nowadays.

Quite dated sounding, I don’t think it’s survived the test of time

- classic hip hop feel - love the rock influence, especially featuring Aerosmith

Not my style

Hvis jeg skulle forestille mig et old School hip hop album, ville jeg nok tænke på et album som dette. Instrumentalt er det ret sparsomt og er mest domineret af trommer og sparsomme lydeffekter og elektriske guitar riffs. Fedeste numre var nok walk This Way med aerosmith eller My Adidas. Ikke lige min stil overall. Men rimelig cool.

Kinda interesting. Very dated but still worth listening to

It’s ok. Has not really aged well. Most of the song’s sound very similar

Dobbelt Run-DMC, old-school, mere rocket, 80’er lyden,

MCing has come a long way. Like the instrumentation and appreiciate it's importance to HipHop and modern music. Funny to hear the origin of NWH and Lonely Island

Cool listen, Will Explore more probably

Extremely influential hip-hop record. The music itself isn't anything spectacular in retrospect, but Run-DMC really helped to pioneer hip-hop and bring it to the white audiences, as evidenced by their track "Walk This Way"

I can hear the beastie boys influence.didnt realise how close it was

Rap sympa dans la rythmique, mais après avoir lu les textes, c'est bien bien sexiste, notamment la seule que je connaissais, /Walk this way/ (celle avec Aerosmith). /It's Tricky/ et /Proud to be black/ sont très bien cependant. C'aurait été 4 étoiles sans le sexisme.

This was like taking a trip back to memory lane, the good kind of trip

Now Dr. Seuss and Mother Goose both did their thing But Jam Master's getting loose and D.M.C.'s the king. 👑👑👑

Classic early rap record but I don't think it has the relisten-ability like I thought it would. Songs can be catchy, but that drum beat gets a bit too repetitive and then after 30 minutes, you just kinda forget where you were. Gotta respect them for leading the charge in this style of rap. Rap seems to have always been the genre for the people, but I don't know who this album was for or if there was really any sort of spectacular message behind it. Still, just good times. Stand out track: Peter Piper

Rap isn't normally what I listen to, but this album was groovy and had some fun tracks. I was bopping my head along to this I was at work. Pretty solid.

While having some questionable lyrics and production decisions, I still had a fun time with some tracks.

not my genre, but still entertaining

трики великолепный, остальное не успела за день понять, надо как-нибудь продолжить

Found it annoying after a while

„Walk this Way“ aber überbewertet. Für mich ne schwache 3 gemessen aus der Auswahl bisher.

Enjoyable but not really my kind of thing.

Has some bangers

Very fun listen and I can appreciate how relevant this album is, but it's not really my thing :D

Beats minimal but hard, raps way more dynamic than I expected, and actual effective fusions of rap and rock. Quite a solid album even if it’s clearly dated. Best song: It’s Tricky

Too corny for me....

The first half of this album was awesome, and the two huge hits this album had were hits for a damn good reason. However, while this was a really entertaining hip hop record, it did feel very dated listening to it now at points, and some of what was on here felt like filler, Dumb Girls and Perfection as examples. Overall it was a fun listen.

It gets a little samey. But a classic for sure

A strong start with some classic songs ("It's Tricky" the best of them) but it tails off in the second half of the album. The flow seems pretty dated by modern standards.

it's like the beastie boys but a little better. certainly not bad, but not my thing.

Not my genre at all but it's good to hear different things

Perus hyvää just sitä run dmc tyyliä. Walk This Way ja Its Tricky tällä
