Reviews (page 8 of 8)

Not for me, mostly boring. I liked the song "High Horse," because it was one of the only tracks with any energy behind it.

ok. fairly generic country po. not really my bag.

The sounds are quite pleasant but nothing at all sticks out as being particularly interesting.

Generic country girl. Lyrics are just as generic and designed by the country version of Benny Blanco probably. You can insert any female "country" artist and it will sound the exact same. Need my Daisy Dukes, straw hat, cowgirl boots, and some whiteclaws. Hell ya bruther.

There was a huge amount of discourse around this LP when it dropped, especially concerning how Musgraves was 'reimagining' country. To that end, the album does start out strong - even if the songwriting is a tad stream-of-consciousness, the melodic ideas are fresh for the genre and the production is air-tight. As the album progresses, however, this clean execution starts to sound more like the same sterile, bitter taste of any other modern pop-country artist. Somewhere around 'Space Cowboy' the melodies curdle into the same plasticine Max Martin progressions we've heard 1000 times before, and the LP gives up completely on sounding like anything other than pop-country radio filler.

Most of the songs were very similar to each other.

I struggled with this. Nothing offensive, but mainly a bit bland.

Some of the songs that were more folk were ok. The whole record seemed safe, overproduced, and boring.

Just not to my taste, nothing materially wrong with it however.

ikkje for meg

pop gurl

Even though I'm a modern pop apologist, this album is still very mediocre. It's a very clean album but probably to a fault. Highlights: Butterflies, Happy and Sad, Rainbow. 2.5

I quite like alt-country. Jessie Sykes for example is a songwriter of endless depth. This leans towards a poppier end of the spectrum however.... and is the country music equivalent of a Mcdonalds Big Mac meal. Tasty, but you're quickly left wanting something more substantial after the initial buzz has worn off. Like her voice though.

A weird combination of very safe country music with a nice dreamy (almost psychedelic) quality. Overall it's nice, but too pleasant to be interesting. Also some of the lyrics are laughably lame: "Texas is hot, I can be cold, Grandma cried when I pierced my nose". Rating: 2.5/5 Playlist track: Oh, What a World Date listened: 13/07/22

Ehhhh. I will say the vocals and production in particular are better than it needed to be for a generic country pop album. I remember when it came out, and many people that year were very polarized about it. I remember mostly hearing good things, I thought it was pretty forgettable. I listened to it a few days ago and I can't recall a single thing from it. Not terrible, just not exactly sure why there was so much praise for this. It was definitely too pop-y and gummy in a lot of parts for my own taste. 2.5/5

Some cool songwriting and slightly experimental stuff but I’m not one for country or teenage girl music

ikkje min sjanger

Kjedelig

Disney movie credits music. But not like Lion King. I'm talking like Wreck it Ralph 7: The Ralphening, which has 23% on Rotten Tomatoes. "A country pop record, Golden Hour also contains elements of disco" Basically the antithesis of my music taste.

Country pop combines two genres of music that I find most devastatingly annoying. This wasn't as bad as I thought, so maybe two wrongs can partially redeem each other. Still pretty bad though.

Pish in my ears. Should been called ‘Golden Shower’

Coffee shop background music. Bland, though pleasant and inoffensive despite the terrible lyrics. Why it's on this list is a complete mystery though

The very definition of meh

As someone who doesn't generally dig mainstream country music, the general lack of it on the 1001 has been appreciated. However, as someone who doesn't generally dig mainstream country music, I was very interested to listen to Kacey Musgraves' "Golden Hour" in the hope that her reputation for defying genre norms and boundaries was well-earned. And I guess that reputation is somewhat well-earned. But not in a way that made me enjoy the album. "Golden Hour" features some pretty typical country songs, some indie singer-songwriter-ish songs with a bit of a country twang, and some pop songs with a country twang. Some of the indie ballads were fine, but not good enough to overshadow the pop and country songs, which did nothing for me. It's like trying to contain all of Taylor Swift's career phases within one album, and while I'm not a Swift fan her songs are still generally catchier and stick with you more. Overall, this was a pretty forgettable album.

It's a nice album... 2.5/5

Good voice production and all but it just never grabbed me.

Like the first track I think this album is a "Slowburn" it is all a bit samey for my eclectic taste.

I finally listened to this to be able to get back on track It was very syrupy. Deep inside there might be a half decent C&W album trying to get out of all the glossy production

I remember hearing this one after it came out and liking it quite a bit. Not sure if I am just not in the mood for it now or am if I am just into other things.

All a bit 'meh'. Standout tracks - Love is a Wild Thing & Golden Hour Probably wouldn't listen to this again but nothing too bad either

Not my thing at all. Got through about half of it but couldn’t do much more.

Quelle merde

Probably again just not for me unfortunately

Auto tuned country. Not as bad as I expected

It's country, and as much as it's pleasant, country doesn't do anything for me.

After suffering through the PJ Harvey album, this has been a soothing listen. Very backgroundy though. Nothing stands out, inoffensive stuff.

I'd heard good things so I was expecting something a bit more than middling fun country pop

Inoffensive Taylor Swift tribute act but nothing new. Happy & Sad the best of the lot.

This is just a bit dull. Saccharine country female voice, nothing that I can put my finger on as being particularly wrong (other than the lyrics getting quite kitschy every now and then), but nothing that's particularly stand out good either. This feels like the sort of thing that Taylor Swift has been doing for 15 years, but it doesn't have the oomph or the sass. 2/5, marginally better than yesterday.

Not my sort of music but it sort of held my attention so must be good. Sounded like the Sundays at certain points. Nothing grated here.

lol, poppy country music. Laaaaaaaame. 2/5.

It’s alright, but nothing impressive

Mmmmkay. Vuoden 2018 levy ja tällä materiaalilla listoilla? WTF. Tällainen levy on tehty vähintään kerran kuukaudessa viimeisen 20v aikana...

Bit too poppy to really be country

Not too bad, just not for me.

2.3 - Decent listen, but just not a genre I really enjoy.

I could find nothing special here. Sounded like very generic country-lite stuff.

Kul med något modernt! Hypead countrypop. "Love is a Wild Thing", "Oh, What a World", "Mother", och "High Horse" är bra! "Love Is A Wild Thing" har en fin melodi i refrängen. I High Horse hörs inte lika mycket country, utan är istället mer fräsch discopop. BRA! Bästa låt: High Horse.

When she started to sing I immediately got turned off by her voice. I really dislike this genre of commercial music that sounds like its being sung by a 14 yr old girl. I suppose the great majority of listeners like it and it sells tons, but its not for me. Its good to see some newer albums on this list but I cannot fathom why this particular album made it.

She has a good voice, but everything from the album is quite forgettable and overproduced.

Lovely voice, pleasing music and some insightful, albeit obvious, lyrics (never really going anywhere, caught up in a web I was getting kind of use to staying there; to stop all this thinking, just keep on drinking) but also some cheesy ones (Texas is hot, I can be cold, Grandma cried when I pierced my nose). Not my cup of tea, too melancholy, a lot of fluff and light pop. At first, I thought if I was ever in that type of mood or feeling (not sure specifically what mood/feeling; positivity, optimistic [oh, what a world], heartache, gloomy, empathetic [Mother]) I’d enjoy the album, but the more I listened to it, just seemed like a lot of B side songs and I’d never be in a mood to listen to it. Looks like Slow Burn, Space Cowboy and the closing title Rainbow are liked the most on the album and I was hoping to find a diamond in the rough, but I was exhausted listening to the album by the end. Again, good voice and while I don’t have a problem of someone sounding like themselves; it’s who there are and if they have a specific ‘sound’ that people seem to like, go with it. But I was really bored with it, just dull and repetitive sound to me. I’m starting to think (hope?) that these 1001 albums are those you might not have necessarily listen to as a norm, partly since I haven’t been too exposed to the 14 I’ve seen so far. Because yeah, this album wouldn’t be on my list of top 10,001 albums, let alone 1,001 that you should listen to before you die.

Its not for me but I could see the appeal if I was into that style of pop/country crossover.

Overall, I liked this album more than I thought I would. That being said, I don't love it. It's a bit too saccharine for me. It didn't keep my attention all the way through, and quite a few of the tracks sound like the kind of songs one hears on 'American Idol'-type contest shows. On the plus side, some of the songs are very nicely written and performed. She's definitely a talented songwriter, musician, and singer. I have a feeling if she add a little more realness/rawness to her songs (I heard hints of it in some of these tracks), I'd be drawn in more. PS -- I'm also glad to see an album made just a few years ago make this list.

Country pop at it's finest .......

Wannabe taylor swift.

A Review in the Style of KM Lyrics: I’m listening to the record the sun is shining outside But I’m feeling sad inside oooo-woooo oooo-wooo But I remember Texas But I remember my grandma There’s more to this world oooo-wooo OOOOO-WOOOOOOOOO So I turn it off, yes I do I just press stop on that old tape player by the door oooo-woooo oooo-wooo I open that door and drown myself in a cattle trough (cattle trough)

Im sorry i didnt listen i just really dont love this kind of country music.

Another Taylor Swift album would be more deserving of being on this list.

This is the best 2018 had to offer? I gave up around song 5.

Did not like this album

Chatooooo

The trouble with all these new country albums, for me at least, is that there is nothing to mark one apart from the other. They melt into one another, as indistinguishable as a teaspoon of lukewarm water in an ocean of blandness. I listened to a few tracks to make sure I was right... I was.

I was on vacation so I have a giant backlog of albums to get through. This is my second country album in 3 days, and if this keeps up I'm going to be caught up a lot quicker than expected.

Pop Country is still Country Music at the end of the day(and as my history suggests, I'm definitely no fan of 2010s music either). This was long, drawn-out Corporate Country that was a complete drag to get through. At least Kacey Musgraves loathes the orange tyrant, and I won't pull a reverse "separate the art from the artist", so the album was a big miss for me. Favorite Track: "High Horse".

I hated pretty much everything about this. 1/10

Wait until you see how poorly I viewed Taylor Swift, let alone the Walmart version of her... just no.

This is the definition of basic. Force anyone to make an entire album at gunpoint and most people could manage at least this. The lyrics are hilariously bad, I would have preferred some moon/spoon/june lines over this cringe-fest. It's over-produced to within an inch of its life, and auto-tuned the rest of the way. Soulless, emotionless, inspirationless, and how the fuck did it get on this list?

Not a huge fan of this

Boring, saccharin sweet, middle of the road pop with a hint of country.

This is everything wrong with modern music. I want to set this on fire. 1/5

Nice background music. Not impressed

Conventional, unoriginal, and generic. I do not know why this album could be on this list other than paid advertising. Will not revisit.

2/10 She has a good voice, but country/pop is not my cup of tea.

not my type of music didn't even listen :(

Si pudiera le pondría un 0

I hate this.

Did not expect this feeling like a cowgirl and the wind is brushing my hair

I'm making a list of 1001 albums people should listen to. What's the problem? I'm stuck at 300. Easy, just randomly select 700 or so! That is the only way this, along with a lot of others on here make it. 1.

Musical wallpaper. Just a formulaic sound coupled with trite lyrics. She's one of hundreds.

too country

Why is this on here?

😴unnecessary chick music

Kacey Musgraves has some good songs, but it seems none of them managed to make an appearance on this album. Her voice is so-so to my ears for the most part, and a full album of it doesn't sound great. The lyrics don't ever wow me, and a lot are just plain lame.

The textbook definition of "lowest common denominator". This mindless commercial product managed to capture the worst traits of the music industry and the blandest, most impersonal musical trends of the time and fuse them into a pure diamond of stale emptiness. This type of music is clearly designed to be both totally innocuous and instantly forgettable - probably because its sole purpose is to act as soothing background noise that makes people feel all fuzzy and carefree when shopping or sitting in a coffee shop. As a matter of fact, I zoned out after a few songs, and couldn't remember what I was listening. I don't even hate it - it's so vacuous and pointless that my brain barely registers it. 1/10

Sounds like a 90s leftover, somewhere between Sheryl Crow and Heather Nova. I can’t see any impact on music here, if anything, it feels like a step backward.

I’m sure this album would speak to me if I were a 15 girl growing up in Oklahoma. For me it’s just plain awful.

Incidental tracks from Virgin River / Gilmore Girls where the characters contemplate lost loves or deep introspection around their feelings etc. etc. etc.

Seichte Popmusik

Little girl voice. Dumb lyrics.

not listening to modern country, not even giving it a chance

Didn't finish it. Bland

this girls IQ is probably very similar to the average mosquito. this is the whiniest, most annoying thing i have ever put in my ears. Truly terrible forgettable music

Just not for me.

Not for me

Not my style

How is this relevant to music history in any way?

The lyricism is atrocious

Not a fan of country.

Some rock instrumentation can’t hide shit country music

There is not a single reason why this album should belong to this list. This is neither country nor pop, but something that sucks as much as country and pop do...

Didn’t quite like it, wasn’t my style, BUT it’s horrible how sexist some of the bad reviews are.

every song sounds the same 🤬💔😭 white girl ahh music 3/10 2026/1/11

Her fourth album. Country / Pop. Slow Burn is an apt name for the opening track. This album is slow and man does it burn your ears. The next track starts with the listing of the days of the week trope and that's about as good as the lyrics get on the album. This is soulless, inauthentic, auto tuned bilge.

I don’t like it. I think her voice isn’t interesting and the lyrics are so basic and often just dumb.

What a load of shit

Not for me. After every song I was checking how long I still had to go

Terrible album, even considering that I hate country.

Taylor Swift

Instead of wasting words on this, let's just summarize: this is disgusting radio pop garbage and I hate it Nononononono aint no way I'm sitting through a fucking ballad after that shit fucking album fuck off

Thoughts whilst listening to Golden Hour by Kacey Musgraves Is it possible to award 0 stars? Are Kacey's family involved in this venture? Is this album generated by AI? Can AI be embarrassed? Are Throbbing Gristle actually quite good? If Dido met Kacey could they develop a song that would put half the world to sleep? What's for tea? Is it chicken?

Not my cup of tea. Poppy generic pop.

You are kidding me this is what counts as country music these days!? It’s just indie pop with an occasional slide guitar and sung in a mild southern accent innit? Either way it’s utterly utterly devoid of anything interesting, novel or particular unique musically. Given I gave Prince 1* yesterday, I’m afraid Kacey, your fate is sealed.

This is #day430 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… it makes me wonder what someone has to do in their life to need to hear this album before they die. What makes me wonder even more is how much more of this kind of crap is on this list. Like, fucking seriously. This is a 1 out of 5. Looking forward to #day431.

Woulda been a 2 without the false advertising of "space cowboy". Honestly this album brings nothing to the table beyond generic country which just isn't that good.

PAIN I've heard a lot of hype about Kacey and this album in particular. So I was excited to get into this Oh my god it was horrendous. Her voice grated on me so badly. The lyrics were terrible and cringy. And at parts she sounded like an AI bot. This is what people have been hyping up?? The musical equivalent to spending a day walking around home bargains to be honest. No offence to the woman I'm sure she's lovely, but oh my god never again please 1 ⭐️

Listens: 1 Standout Tracks: None This is exactly the type of music I dread listening to on the List. A genre I already don't like, paired with vapid lyrics and meh singing about cowboys, love, relationships and other country-lifestyle stereotypes. This album give off real "trad-wife" vibes; There's a weird pervasive focus on deference to men and self-objectification. "Knowing my place", "I'm not good enough", "I'm only human". Yuck.

This album uses the lines “fear of missing out” and “I wish we didn’t Live so far from each other, I miss my mother” unironically without giving the ‘sweet earnest’ any meaningful musical contrast. I wish the pretty neat production and the at least coherent songwriting could elevate this for me, but I turned my daily scheduled mitski album off for this and so am all too aware how you do this type of music right.

Never heard of her, never want to. So bland it makes me want to punch a wall.

Good god. This is not just music that is not my taste. This is simply just bad music. Some of the worst lyrics I’ve ever heard. Literally sounds like it was written by an elementary school girl with a crush on someone. It was absolutely a terrible album and should be taken off this list. 1.5/5

Bland boring Country Pop

I hate this.

Ugh… I could tell this was going to be a long listen from the very start. Lines like "In Tennessee, the sun's goin' down / But in Beijing, they're headin' out to work" (thanks Kacey for pointing out that time zones exist) on the opening track Slow Burn already set the tone. I might be able to look past lyrics like that if the music was more engaging, but sadly, that’s not the case here. To me, it just sounds bland and uninteresting and completely forgettable. The production doesn’t help either. Everything, especially the vocals, feels too clean, too pristine, too compressed, which is often the case with modern pop albums. Her voice also has a slightly whiny quality that I personally find offputting. The lyrics throughout tend to be overly straightforward, but not in a clever or impactful way, just kind of flat. Honestly, I could imagine this music blasting in a H&M or some fast fashion clothing store, which just makes the experience feel even more nauseating. That said, there are some redeeming moments on here. Every now and then, there are some interesting sonic choices: an unexpected sounding keyboard or guitar line (Velvet Elvis), some Daft Punk-style vocal effects (like on Oh, What a World, though again, the lyrics here felt very naive and cliche), the unexpected disco influence on High Horse. These little touches are what kept me going and you can see that whoever produced this wanted to elevate songs that would otherwise be pretty uninteresting. And I’ll admit, when all the elements like banjos, keyboards, slide guitars come together just right, there are some flashes of beauty. But overall, those moments were few and far between. 1.5/5

This sounds EXACTLY like those Suno AI songs - the resemblance is uncanny. That's probably the only area in which this album has been 'influential' in any capacity.

The lyrics are juvenile, the musical accompaniment is unchallenging/puerile and her voice isn’t particularly pleasing. This is really boring. It’s kind of like The Carpenters if they’d used a steel guitar. Or like most Nasville country music these days.

Well, wasn’t that cute. But no thank you.

I came into this ready to hate it: I do not like pop music, and I do not like modern country music... at all. 95% of it is just pop and rock music sang with a southern accent. And this is definitely that, if not perhaps just a little elevated. There's a young girl in the midwest or the south, however, wearing a sundress and cowboy boots and a flower crown for whom this is soundtracking her whole life, and for that, I reckon I'm stoked she has this record to lean on. Although I didn't totally hate it, I'm also relieved it's over now. Being into a lot of shoegaze bands, I did appreciate the choice to use an airy, ethereal production quality in a lot of the compositions, but this simply isn't for me. I totally could have died without ever hearing this.

This one was just not for me at all. I gave it 4 songs but didn't end up finishing the album.

Bleh, no thanks. On to the next.

Very boring. Totally generic.

I don't really like pop and I absolutely hate country. This was never going to work.

The voice is no bueno, esp when it's double-tracked

Not for me. Neither poppy enough nor country enough to work.

The lyricist should return to elementary school and finish up. So dumb

I think my brain just died!

This won a Grammy? How? It’s trite, Obvious and bland as all fuck. I can only assume the people who judge these things are deaf and have never made music in their lives

I don't believe this album should be on the list. First, because 2018 is too recent to determine appropriate significance. Second, because even without enough time, it has no staying power. So pleasant, it is offensive.

Not liked

Decent album. Not my usual go to but good. A lot rockier than Storied from the city. Lots of good tracks. Missed and 50ft queenie stand out.

Rural Taylor Swift

I hope I never like this.

Boring music, bad lyrics. Virtually unlistenable

Bland as bland is.

Mediocre. There are thousands of musicians singing similar songs and nothing stands out.

Music for horse girls.

i'm alright with a slow burn... takin' my time, let the world turn.... ?! Right.

Gear: Abyss DIANA MR (vegan) Artwork: 🪭🧔🏽‍♀️❓ Produktion: 🎧😐🆗 Musik: 😑😂🤢 Wertung: 😂/5

This is just pop worth enough "country" thrown in so the tight jeans and pickup trucks crowd will listen. Another trash record.

Country Pop. No, no, no. Not even the best example of the genre.

Vízízű, borral jó. Ui.: mégsem bírtam meghallgatni, kurva hamar unalmas lesz

Not for me. Cheesy lyrics, bland.

Feels very generic.

Absolutely awful.

impossível

Not a fan :( sounds like an expensive grocery store. Music for babies 🤷

Not my cup of tea.

very much not for me. i don't consider myself a country hater, but i feel like newer releases in the genre tend to be bland. whenever i sit down to listen to them, it tends to be very superficial. anyways yeah 1 star, not pour moi.

She's talented but not exactly for me

If I licked an unsalted spud 'down south' it would sound better

dixon dallas is better

c'est super chiant

Sorry, but it’s sooooo boring.

Not for me

so cheesy

Country pop

Culerísimo. Perro asco.

Not a country fan in any way, this album did not change my mind about that.

Not a bit of me

Blood awful.

Vapid.

Laitappa naama kuntoon ensin niin kehtaa näyttää.. sitten soitanta kerhoon ja tietokone runkanta (tietokonneen käyttö mussiikissa)... lopetetaan...

Not for me

Definitely not my type of music

Bleh. Too slow and melodic for my taste - probably useful if you need something to fall to sleep to

Pop country is one of the things I hate most in the world. This album at least incorporates some interesting other elements like synths and vocoders but it's not enough to make it palatable to me.

Dull and country.

Perverse to include in this list.

Not really the target audience for this one.

Hadn't heard of her, so didn't know it was more fucking country shit. At first I was hopeful. Her voice is ok, and it all seemed pleasant enough. Turned it off after 3 or 4 songs. just fed up of it.

I ain't into modern country or singy-songy stuff so this is a miss for me. Sorry.

she literally just copies T swift in this album?
