Pleasantly surprised
I found this was trying to be everything with the country sprinkled in, I guess thats not a bad idea but it just didn't mesh for me. The production was over the top trying very hard to capture a pop audience i could not make it through the whole thing
I liked this! Good female led country album that sets a slower pace. My only gripe is that it can drag a little too much in some places. She has some great vocals and good lyrics, makes me think of a small town country darling singing her heart out at the local bar.
Love Kaceys voice and this album is great. The only thing holding it back from 5 stars is her corny ass lyrics “That bar down the street don’t close for an hour. We should take a walk and look at all the flowers”. Yeesh
Not really something in my library
I don't think I've ever been immediately struck by how outstanding an album is. Musgraves has truly produced a masterpiece by all definitions of the word. I can't say enough good things about this record. 6/5.

You know, I don’t generally expect myself to enjoy country music, especially modern country. But I really liked this. It felt more like pop with a country twang. Lots of solid songwriting and interesting musical ideas. I imagine a lot of people will give this a low rating simply because they’ve decided that they hate country. I’ll say, I would consider country to be one of my least favorite genres, but my summary on this site does not reflect that. I think this list probably has higher quality country selections than some other genres (for example, I love punk music, but there’s a lot of punk on here that I don’t particularly like, so my rating for it is relatively low). In any case, I think it’s a shame if people don’t give this album the time of day simply due to its genre.

I quite liked the first track, once I got over the fact that it's basically "Old Man" by Neil Young with different words. The rest of the album was pleasant enough, in a "this is definitely a 2 star album" way.

This album wasn't bad. But it left me with a "meh" feeling. There was nothing that really inspired me to listen to it again. I can't imagine why this got a Grammy. Scale: 5 - My absolute favorites. 4 - Albums I like. 3 - It was ok to listen to but I wouldn't seek it out. 2 - Didn't like. 1 - Absolute shit.

It’s giving Taylor Swift in her country era. I actually enjoyed this album more than most that I’ve listened to since beginning this journey.

Her voice is beautiful. But every single song on the album is the same. I remember how popular this album was when it dropped, and I can see why. But it's also a good explanation as to why I'm so rarely drawn to recent pop releases. Favorite track: High Horse
Unsure why this is praised so highly. It’s got done good lyrics, but the music is rather one-more. Each song blends into the next. Meh.
Not my typical style of music, I respect it but it's a bit too melancholy for me. She's a great singer and had some good lyrics though.

Kacey Musgraves has a very pleasant, pretty voice. It's a really good country pop album. Maybe a perfect pop album. Not a bad song on it. That said, I am not sure why it is among the 1001 Songs. Credit where credit is due: 7/10

Three is a lot to like about this album. Production is satisfyingly bright. Vpice is good. Decent songs. It just needs a bit of an edge. Its all a bit nice even when singing about despair.
Okay, that was actually a pretty nice album, boring, but it didn't sound anything as your typical country music, more like a positive pop star, which is nice to hear. I would give it a nice and average note of 3/5, but I was definitely lied to by Kacey. Song "Space Cowboy" is not about Cowboys from the Space, or about Cowboy Bepop. Instead, it should be named Space COMMA Cowboy. Terrible advertisement, which made me dislike this album. Very disappointed, 2/5.
Ich hab direkt keine Ahnung, was ich damit anfangen soll. Ja die kann bestimmt ganz toll singen. Aber was soll ich denn mit so einer Country-Musik machen? Also, es tut jetzt auch nicht weh, muss man auch dazu sagen. Die kann auf jeden Fall ganz gut singen, aber es ist nicht mein Ding. Ich höre noch in den Song „Butterflies“ rein, der hat immerhin 170 Millionen Klicks. Das klingt jetzt schon ein bisschen mehr nach Country. Weiter zu „Rainbow“ (200 Millionen Klicks). Scheint mir eine Pianoballade zu sein. Boah ne.

I remember being a bit underwhelmed by Golden Hour after reading all the praise from critics and fans. It just felt a bit too poppy for my tastes. But then 'Golden Hour' and 'Rainbow' arrive and closes out the album on a perfect high note - making the whole thing seem more coherent than at first listen.
I knew that this received a good amount of praise when it was released. I enjoyed some of the songs but never thought more of it. Sometimes you just gotta listen to the critics and fans though. The production is great, the songwriting a well mixed breed of pop and country with lyrics that are… Yeah okay, they are not all that good to be honest. I really enjoy the more upbeat pop songs like the fun “High Horse” with its iconic opening - but Musgraves also hits right at home on the mellower title track and “Slow Burn”. It’s as catchy as a cowboy with a notorious aim.
I really enjoyed this. Country isn’t usually my thing and It’s a little cheesy and predictable in parts, but some of it is spectacular.

A Swift-wannabe writes generic boring country pop ballads with shitty tasteless hooks and lyrics that lack any expressive form of emotion. The most interesting songs is shit like "High Horse" which is nothing more than a country-infused basic disco beat. It's consistent, the production is nice and spacey, and there are some ok songs on here. But it's mostly trash.
It was fine - all the songs had a similar sound. I won’t run to listen to it again, but I wouldn’t shut it off.

This is a fairly anodyne country pop album with an overly tuned, saccharine vocal. Musically fine if not particularly interesting. The songwriting is notably bad. I hope I had more interesting things to talk about when I was 20. Fave Songs: None. Favorite comments from another reviewer: "Too much time rolling around in the satin sheet production, not enough time on the writing. When they aren't outright clunkers, they're pap. And when when they're not pap, the drippy aesthetic makes them sound like it."
This is the type of music that you listen on blast on your way back from the beach, with your hand out the window, making that wave motion people do, hair flowing, with the sun setting in the distance behind you. There’s no denying her voice is smooth, clear, and harmonious but her lyrics aren’t great. Woman version of county men talking about their trucks type lyrics. Was sad when “Space Cowboy” wasn’t about a crossover of Space Dandy and Cowboy Bebop. Oh shit, I’ve heard “Golden Hour” before. Didn’t think I heard any of her songs, was quite surprised. “Rainbow” reminded me of “When She Loved Me” from Toy Story 2. I know Tyler would give this a 0/10 if he could and will probably say this is the white girl music I like, which he’s kinda right. 7/10
She has a wonderful voice. It’s too bad I don’t like country music because this was a tasteful album. I would have preferred more pop from her versus country. Still it was pleasant to listen to. The instrumentals were clean. It’s rare that I would rate country this high so that’s really saying something. “High Horse” was my favorite song. I wanted more songs that were faster paced pop like that one. Still a great album. 7/10
This was a pleasant surprise for me. I don't listen to this genre of music too often but u have to imagine this is near the top of country pop. She has an amazing voice and I love the production on most songs as well. I remembered hearing a song I liked thinking this must be the best song then another one plays that I would like even more. There are a couple of basic songs that I would probably skip on re listens but plenty of songs I looped back to back. 8/10
Excuse me while I blow my fucking brains out instead of listening to this. People always shit on teenage girl music and you know what they are right, this sucks. The lyrics sound like they were written by a child and I find out that three grown adults co-wrote this garbage. The background music is so overproduced and still somehow sounds like the most basic shit imaginable. She sounds like every other white girl with a guitar artist like they are made in some kind of white girl singer factory. She sings like one of those Nation wide insurance commercials that plays in between music you actually want to listen to. I would honestly rather listen to diarrhea slosh around in this woman’s acoustic guitar than have to listen to this album ever again. 1/10

Enjoyable enough, great vocals and production. Lyrics are fine, bit bland probably. I don't really have too many complaints per se, but I also don't feel like there's anything that's pushing it past a 3.5 for me.
Surprisingly good mixture of country and pop with elements of soft rock, occasionally hurt by overwrought production.

Nice listen with a health mix of styles. They should've not used drum computers on some of the songs. It really makes some parts of the music artificial.
I've never listened to Taylor Swift but I'd like to imagine this is what she sounds like. I might have cheated and listened to a recent song from 2021 (cherry blossoms), her earlier stuff was more country now it's more pop. Either way, really good!

Uh oh. I'm not even remotely close to a country fan. We will see how this goes. Surprisingly inoffensive compared to the typical modern country album. Well, I am sure there are country purists that will not classify this as country music, which is fine. This might be the first country album I've ever liked. Is this what will prevent me from saying \"anything but country\" when people ask what I like to listen too? Maybe. Someone phrased it differently for me and it makes more sense now listening to this. I had said I do not like country and they replied or \"you just haven't found country you like yet\". I think I do actually like this. Very surprised I do, but happy I gave it a chance. Maybe it's just I like female country singers much more than male? Anyway I wouldn't mind listening to this again. 4 out of 5.

I remember a bit of a fuss going around when this came out, but I never checked it out as it didn't seem like my thing, but I guess now it's been forced upon me. And oh man it's exactly what I dreaded, completely boring country-pop with nothing interesting or captivating about it. What on earth convinced them that this needed to be on the list, 1000s of albums that sound exactly like this have been made for decades now. Her vocals are fine, but there's only so long I can listen to the basic lyrics, basic playing, basic song structure over and over. Made 45 minutes feel like a few hours.
Typical pop country, more pop than country. It wasn't a bad album, I'm just not sure why it's included on the list. It's not particularly groundbreaking, nothing really stood out as great.

this really has got the "popular music" vibe to it huh. very much not a fan of that vibe myself, bores me to tears. she does have a really nice voice though, so even if the songwriting and general sound does nothing i won't give it a 1
4.3 + A potent blend of influences - I hear the simple storytelling of Crystal Gayle, the melancholy of Lana Del Rey, the artful studio mastery of Taylor Swift. Musgrave's unadorned singing and songcraft on "Slow Burn" and "Oh, What a World" are deeply affecting - I well up almost anytime I hear them. The second half offers lighter fare with "Velvet Elvis" and "High Horse" before closing out with another stunner, "Rainbow." This is music that makes you miss your mom, want to hug your dog and squeeze your baby son's tiny foot.
JFC this album is fantastic. I'm not into this type of music and just had a stinker of a slow album in Joni Mitchell but this is fuego.

Not a country guy but this was a pleasant listen.
Musgraves pushes the limits of the usual conservative genre of country by flirting with elements of pop and electronic music. It gives it a unique sound. Musically, country fans shouldn't be too distracted by the occasional synthesizer or vocoder but more conservative listeners might be put off by some of her progressive politics, something the genre isn't famous for.
Not sure if the vocoder thing on 'Oh, What A World' was meant to be a country throwback to the Talking Box or a modern production technique, but either way, it didn't work. Overall, a decent album. No real standouts.
This was a great modern pop country album. Overall I don’t love a lot of the modern commercial country music but musgraves did a fantastic job of bridge by country sound with melancholy pop. The lyricism and singing make this an enjoyable album that can be heard many times. I feel like years down the road people will still like this album. 7.8/10
I went back and forth with this one but, in the end, Kacey's voice and delivery tipped the scales to the positive. It doesn't hurt that the production is fantastic. "Golden Hour" is a fun album. It's nothing groundbreaking but it's also just enjoyable. There's shockingly few albums on this list that are just easy and fun. Thankfully, this one is.

A very Taylor Swifty country album. Nice simple, bare-bones compositions accompanying nice vocals. This is not innovative or groundbreaking, but it is a good example of a good genre done very well.

Oh man I love this album. I first heard about her / this record when it won the Grammy for record of the year 2019 (even though it came out in 2018? I forget how that works) over other acts like Drake, H.E.R., Post Malone, Janelle Monae, and the OST for Black Panther. People were upset at that and I felt obliged to check this out because I am naturally attracted to the underdog. I am a younger brother and a Mets fan after all. I listened a lot to this album on a trip to Colorado in February 2020, the month before COVID19 hit. It will always exist in a very vivid place in my brain in helping me remember that period of time just before it all went to shit. I also revisited it by chance on a 4/20/2020 livestream hosted by Willie Nelson with people doing home performances- it was funny because she was wearing green pyjamas and saying that she was completely out of weed and how it sucked. I just found a recording of it actually, and she said roughly "I dressed up for the occasion, I brushed my teeth. This is a strange 4/20 mostly because I'm completely out of weed, not even a crumb. No dust. Not even a cbd joint so that's fun. I'm gonna play Lonely Weekend because every day feels like a lonely weekend, I don't even know what today is." To say that that shit resonated with me would be heavily understating it. I'm really thankful for this album and finding it during that time because I along with everyone else was having a tough time but also because I really just wanted some poppy shit to sit and enjoy on a day to day basis and this did it for me. The definition of a guilty pleasure, even though I think that concept is bullshit and no one should feel that way for liking something. Plus I think the whole album is generally inspired by her at the time recent marriage to her husband and how he brought a lot of love to her life and that's the kind of shit I wanted to hear about. This record has four really really great tracks on it- "Slow Burn" "Lonely Weekend" "High Horse" "Golden Hour" I love how different each one is. Slow Burn is a slow and introspective track that gives some background on her and sets the stage. There's no rush here. The chorus melody is GORGEOUS. I love that little run over the top of the chords under it. I recently played this track for someone who at one point said they didn't like her too much. I played it on guitar and sang that chorus over the chords and they were like "oh yea that's really nice". Lonely Weekend is a bop and does my favorite thing for any album that has a hint of rock in it- it is a more uptempo and energetic second track! I love her voice in this one, it's so sensitive and pristine. I love the way she utilizes little nuanced melodic flourishes and runs, like the "out" in the lyric "without you". There's many of them on this album. This song really highlights how clean and effortless her voice sounds. The acoustic guitars are also immaculately recorded. I love the faster strums in your right ear, slower ones in your left, and the combination that hits around the :45 second mark. This chorus is so good. The lyrics are so simple but the concept really hit me during COVID. I remember having many days at work and being surrounded by people when I didn't want to be and still feeling lonely and isolated and missing my wife. High Horse is a fun disco respite from the established conventions and sound in the rest of the album. This is the radio track. Golden Hour is a super pretty song that sums up the whole album's sentiment towards her newfound love with her husband. It's got extended chords from jazz, it's got her natural little country twang, it's got a Beatles esque bridge chord progression (around 1:55), it's got probably the softest vocals on the record, and more tight production. The droney synths in the chorus are a hidden highlight for me. The rest of the album really isn't that far behind those tracks. Sometimes these albums on this list have stark contrasts from the big hits and the "other" tracks but I can't say that for his record. "Butterflies" wasn't even really on my radar but is a killer song and is somehow the highest played one on Spotify. "Velvet Elvis" is like a more poppy / more country (but definitely not pop country) Black Keys track. I love the album cover. Really simple and really evocative. The font choices are perfect- thin for her name, bold for the album title, her name being under the album name, all good choices. Man she looks hot with those big eyelashes. On better screens/monitors you can see these little visage mirror images of her face above her head. It's interesting. On my old 1080p IPS panel monitor I can barely make them out, but on my nicer 1440p IPS panel they are more visible. Hard rate for me. I want to give it a 4 as I really reserve 5's for really truly great records but it's hard for me to put this as anything lower than a 5. The great songs on this album are really great and the floor of this album is so high. It's a 5.
Well, it sounds nice at least. Even if the sound is reductive, the engineering is overdone and the writing and vocals lack heart. The real issue here is that this record feels really artificial–it's as if Weyes Blood and early Taylor Swift fused into one person and decided to make an album under the condition that it was written in one day with the goal of being superficial and winning awards.

Great sounding album (love the snare sound) and the songs are good, but I wish her voice was more interesting to me. Favorite songs: Slow burn Wonderwoman Velvet elvis (cool groove reminds me of happy pills by Nora Jones) Golden hour Space Cowboy lyrics are kind of cheesy but they work for me Least favorite: High Horse 3.5
I’m no huge fan of hers but I liked this more than I was expecting to. There are a couple light little fun time bops on the record but mostly I find her pretty underwhelming, especially her singing. The giddy up John Wayne lyrics in high horse had me eye rolling a bit. Nothing that I overtly hate about it but I do feel like she’s one of the more overrated artists of our time.

This is good country. I didn't know good country still got made. Not my style (slow burn is the opposite of the 170bpm punk tracks i normally listen to), but hot damn what a song writer. I'll probably revist at some point. This is a great album to keep in the back pocket for when the car can't decide what to listen to on a road trip

This is one of those albums - I consider it a masterpiece, and nearly perfect. I remember listening to it when it came out, walking through NE Minneapolis where I lived at the time, hearing "Slow Burn" and "Lonely Weekend" and thinking, if it continues like this throughout the album it's going to be a classic. It did not let me down! I listened to it, probably dozens of times over the following couple years, and it's still one I come back to regularly. At our wedding, Margaret and I had the musicians play "Oh, What A World" for the processional. There's unfortunately one track I regularly skip (High Horse), but all the others are top notch songwriting. I also appreciate how, despite being a "country" artist Kacey is not afraid to incorporate other genres and production techniques that you don't often here in pop country. Five stars!

Utterly charming. And a total Trojan Horse in that the lightness of effect and whimsical affect of many songs belie real yearning and pathos. KM is begging you to underrate her. Title cut is wondrous. "Slow Burn" and "Lonely Weekend" are also each top-shelf in slightly different registers. "Space, Cowoby" is the best punctuated song title ever (a treat for the grammarian-bookworm cohort) and lovely besides. The fun songs do their jobs, too. This record renewed one's faith in the ability of commercial music – and pop-country music – to produce beauty.

Problem just grabbed it randomly from a pile of albums to fill a spot on the list? Pretty boring pop with a slight country feel. Quite tasteful album, but also a little bit too simple in my opinion.
Not being a contemporary country fan, I was compelled to find out who Kacey Musgraves was after seeing her win Album of the Year in 2019. Sure enough, she was worth her salt. Golden Hour is a warm, soft album that builds on the country pop hooks while maintaining an authentic singer/songwriter base. This is helped by Musgraves' voice, which is effortlessly charming and comforting. Pretty well every song is worth it's salt here, but the opening track Slow Burn is a true beauty. High Horse is perhaps the most poppy song on the album and only slightly out of place from all the slower and stripped-down songs. It's beautiful and purposeful in it's execution, and that's all I ever really want out of an album.
I’m surprised. Her voice is wonderful and I’d call this country about as soon as I’d call kid rock rap. Only difference is that this doesn’t suck as much as that fucking guy. Although I don’t have the estrogen levels to relate to the feelings in this sign, I can relate to its passion as I hop off my misogyny horse. Great music. Great writing!

Yeah, its country pop. I don't hate it, but it's just a million miles from my style of tunes. Production isn't bad, and there is some interesting electronic additions to some tracks, but overall it's very samey songs to my ear.

Some slappers and a couple songs I wouldn't return to but nonetheless it actually isn't bad music which is insanely shocking considering how bad modern country is. It was a nice easy listen. This is the first album I have got that I have listened to extensively and it is probably the best Country album of the 2010s. So many memorable tracks and melodies and best of all it did something few country artists are willing to do, go outside the box. The real issue I have with Country music is the fact that there is so little variety in content and themes. So much Country music is cookie cutter and this is out of the box and incorporates genres outside of Country in a pleasant way. I was reading some reviews of this and all the criticisms I saw to me are ridiculous. Someone said that the songwriting is poor but I couldn't disagree more. In a genre full of bad, repetitive, and derivative songwriting this stood out with interesting concepts and very quaint, emotional lyrics. It clearly doesn't have the lyrical depth comparable to other genres but among Country music, it is at the top. Another common criticism was that this sounded too much like pop and this is such a typical criticism of a country music listener. Country music is easily the least innovative of all the popular genres and it is to its detriment. I like Outlaw Country too but not every country album has to be that. I am not surprised that Country music fans are not open-minded but jeez it is just music sit back and enjoy. This album takes risks in the best way and it definitely paid off because this is a great album. The best songs on this album are "Velvet Elvis", "Space Cowboy", "Rainbow", "Mother", "Butterflies", "Slow Burn" and "Love Is A Wild Thing". There are not any bad tracks on this album. 9/10

Kacey Musgraves is part of the crew taking mainstream country music back to good country music, so maybe that's why an album from 2018 is making a list of albums you must listen to before you die. In any event, I wouldn't add this one to the list. It's a good listen, but needs time age before being relevant for a list like this. 3/5.

Well produced norm-core pop centred on a young woman longing for connection, meaning, romance and magic. Longing is one of the best lyrical themes for pop and i am cautiously curious after the first track. But it soon becomes obvious that the album is dominated by very basic and unoriginal lyrics. Tasteful but safe and boring music production. First previously unknown artist for me in this project

I was incredibly excited to see this as my album for today. My parents went through a country phase in the nineties. Much to my disappointment, the classic rock and eighties music that they used to listen to didn't get anymore time on the stereo system in our living room, and they were replaced by Brooks & Dunn, Alan Jackson, and Trisha Yearwood. I hated it. Thankfully, I have an appreciation for those artists now, but at the time that my parents listened to them, I hated it. Post 9/11, most country music has been filled with faux patriotism, but thankfully this album is a stark contrast to that. Filled with vulnerable lyrics, excellent instrumentation, and experimentation with other genres, Kacey Musgraves shows that country music can still showcase all the things I like about older country music: emotional vulnerability, empowerment of women, and the complicated feelings of love. Every song on this album is distinct in sound and in tone, and it's one of those rare albums that I love to listen to all the way through. From the disco-infused "High Horse" to the witty word play of "Space Cowboy," Kacey Musgraves shows that she can do it all. Songs like "Wonder Woman," manage to show a certain vulnerability that I think female country artists abandoned for a time, when those thoughts of introspection were replaced with ballads of keying the cars of unfaithful lovers. While she may not be Wonder Woman, this album shows that Kacey Musgraves can do a lot, and she can do it really well.
The first song is fine, nothing special but fine. Then it goes rapidly downhill and becomes twee.

I’m not hearing anything transcendent whatsoever. It’s bland and uneventful at least up to track 10, I’ll fast forward trough the rest and get over it
Not mind-blowing but pleasant enough
To be honest I’m not really much into pop so I was a bit sceptical when I saw this album come up as it is a bit more country pop and I think I was right to be. There are a good handful of enjoyable snippets throughout the album and I appreciate the singing as well but none of the songs really do much for me, at most I find some of them okay such as ‘Golden hour’ and ‘Lonely weekend’ but then a fair few, especially in the middle of the album, just seem very boring and I can’t really shake the feeling of how similar some of the songs sound. I guess also Kacey’s country accent and constant use of the acoustic guitar are a reminder that this does have country elements to it but I feel it also holds it back instrumentally as well as I think this could be a good pop album with more interesting production and a change in pace every now and again. However, I probably won’t return to this and if I do it’ll only be for a small collection of songs

First time listening. This is one of the best modern country/pop crossovers I've heard possibly ever. Kacey has really pretty vocals, particularly gripping on the opener "Slow Burn," sounds like leaves falling in autumn. The ending run of "High Horse" to "Rainbow" is godtier, and amplifies my impression/score considerably. I do think the middle of the record has a few tracks that didn't stick out to me, but may have just been my then feeling after a pair of listens. You're not going to get me to be a country music believer, but this one is a wonderful marriage of two worlds. I've noticed that sticking to women in the genre bears better results overall for me. Would give a 3.5, but rounding up as I feel this album deserves it.

If I listen to it without thinking its a "country" I quite enjoyed it. Songs are mellow and catchy for the most part. This would be better for my daughter to listen to than top 40. 4/5

i really, really don't like this music. i'm also loathe to dish out 1* reviews so i find myself trying to find some kind of hook. i think i need to be from rural US to enjoy this. ugh
So I'm fighting hard against my prejudices against country pop to give this a fair crack before dismissing it. First 3 tracks or so I'm thinking so far, so formulaic. Somewhat incredulous that Rolling Stone have this around halfway in a list of 500 greatest albums OF ALL TIME, but most of those lists are bollocks anyway, so moving on... A couple of tracks do stand out as actually interesting, Space Cowboy, Oh what a world. There is an interesting soundscape going on. The rest, well yeah sure its nice to listen to. Accomplished pop. The sort of thing I imagine gets played on stations like Smooth FM 24/7. Will I ever listen to it again, or do I think it's essential? Absolutely not.

This looks like the exact kind of album introduced in the book/list as a promise, just to be removed in newer versions (After writing it, I checked Wikipedia and discovered that she is an experienced country singer and that the album won the Grammy's. It confirms that I understand nothing about music and that this project is perfect for discovering new stuff, even the worst ones). Flat, bland, personality-less, and generic.

Can't say I'm the biggest fan of pop country, but this album works well for its genre. It's 100% better than the majority of country being made these days. I caught a few catchy tracks here like the opener Slow Burn. I probably won't revisit this one too often, but I get its appeal for sure.
Jackson Pollock Ideas: So it begins. Nose ring already mentioned. Some weird vocals in slow burn. Lonely weekend was alright, not harsh on the ears but nothing special. I like the start of butterflies. Oh what a world is decent enough. Happy and sad is good so far. But generally this definitely feels like a very overrated album, like its good that's it, good. Favourite Songs: Happy and Sad High Horse Golden Hour Rainbow Least Favourite Songs: Slow Burn Overall Opinion: The album is good, it is not great. It is difficult to point to a song I don't like, it is also difficult to point to a song I love ('golden hour' is the closest). Strong finish, weak start. I find her voice a little too piercing though generally the vocals were good with the exception of 'slow burn'. Instrumentation actually reminded me a lot of 'solar power' worth noting this was released first. Intimate instrumentation which feels right in your ear, clean and crisp. This is a little bland it must be said, however, lacking some punch and flavour at times. This doesn't sound like country, which is a good thing for me, very poppy, verrryyy poppy. Some interesting lyrics most are earnest, though some made me cringe. Kacey Musgraves will not earn a new listener but she does not have a hater out of me. Solid 6.9/10 from first listen which rounds to a 3/5.
Poppy alt-rock with ample country influence and I also caught some funk and disco stuff. Gorgeous voice, some excellent turns of phrase. I enjoyed this more than expected!
Fantastic album
I went into this one fully expecting to hate it. But I'm finding it airier and more introspective than I thought it would be. Some lyrics are a bit cringe: "Texas is hot, I can be cold. Grandma cried when I pierced my nose." But musically, this is better than I thought. Really enjoying the dreamy piano. The melodies are light and exploratory rather than plodding, formulaic pop. "Oh What a World" is transcendent. I was surprised at the effective brevity and constraint in the interlude "Mother." Didn't care for "Butterflies" but I hate songs that talk about butterflies. The pun in "Space Cowboy" works astonishing well, and it's a great breakup track. "Golden Hour" has some bossa nova chords that really surprised me. The lyrics in many of these songs do leave a lot to be desired, but there are some true standouts. Nothing much to say about "Love Is a Wild Thing" though, pretty generic. "Lonely Weekend" is nice, and "Velvet Elvis" is a novel subject for a song on this kind of record, and I enjoy it.

Second time listening to this album. Favorites are space cowboy, golden hour, and slow burn. I can see why it was a favorably received album. Somehow she does experimental pop with country. Mixed really well on this album.
7/10 Not any bad songs on the album but it also lacked any great songs either. As a whole it was a good album but there were no standout songs I would listen to alone. Favourite songs: Slow burn Butterflies Oh, what a world It was a pleasant listen and I enjoyed it. However it hasn’t got me rushing to come back any time soon but maybe in the future.

This seems like an easy 5. There are so many songs that are engaging.... though Rainbow and Butterflies are nearly perfect, most of the rest of the album shows strength with both melody and lyrical content. Very easy to appreciate.

I shouldn't have been so cynical upon seeing country-pop as the genre tags. In fact, this whole album basically refutes the concept of cynicism in favour of a kind of melancholic hope. With slight psychedelic and electronic sounds coming through, similar to Porter Robinson imo, it keeps things interesting, but not quite enough for me. It's for sitting in the garden in the sun with a slight breeze and a good drink. 14/02/23
I was surprised to see this album show up and went in not expecting much. I definitely would say that I got more than I thought and genuinely enjoyed most of the album. Can get a little boring in some parts and some of the lyrics are a little corny, but for the most part it's unexpectedly good. Great production, structure, instrumentation, chord progressions, and vocals. I like what she's done with the genre. Taken traditional country and presented it in a way that doesn't feel stale. 4/5

While this is not for me, I had a feeling this would be something my beautiful wife would like. So before I sent in my review, where I basically say this is terrible, I asked Mindy if she knew Kacey Musgraves. Well, paraphrasing her answer, She is awesome and her songs are great. She married a guy from Michigan and a lot of her songs reference the beauty of Michigan. She is great! They say opposites attract and she has certainly attracted me, but this is an example of our opposition. Maybe I was blinded by the upcoming Prince album, but I didn't hear anything about Michigan. I did not hear her great songs. I thought it was person with some pretty basic, similar sounding songs where she was torn between country and soft pop, without hitting either. I remembered Velvet Elvis because who doesn't love Elvis? Did nothing for me. Again, maybe because I have a 5 star review coming up! 2 Just because Mindy likes her and I love Mindy
So fun fact about me is that I’m already a Kasey Musgraves fan. I don’t really consider her country. I consider her pop with a light country twang. I actually own her second album “Star-Crossed” on vinyl and I really like it. High Horse has been a favorite of mine since it came out (and it is still her best song). This album was a really nice listen and I appreciate here voice here as much as I expected. Sweet little album with a sweet vibe. 4
1 This list has helped me develop some respect and appreciation for country music, a genre I’ve never been the biggest fan of, but modern country pop stuff like this… yeah still not a fan. I can acknowledge this isn’t an outright bad album in quality, but it also does nothing for me. I wish she had leaned more in either the pop or country direction instead of straddling the line of both, as the result comes off sounding like formulaic sounding radio fodder without much of its own identity, or at best, a second-rate Taylor Swift album. All in all, it’s not incredibly versatile in vocal or musical performance, making it all feel very one-note. If you don’t enjoy the first song, you’re not going to enjoy the rest. Can’t imagine a scenario where I’d willingly listen to this one again.

"rainbow" stood out to me, looks to be the most popular song on the record at the time of recording. this song definitely was the most musically appealing to me personally.
This Country music is easy to listen to, but it just doesn’t do it for me. Lots of Country songs tell a tale and have a bit of grit to them, however, this is just pleasant background noise.
Back in the day this would have been cut to 8 tracks. Too much filler not enough original content, saved by a pretty voice, but still generic country/pop.
I feel like this album, compared to some previous ones on here, was definitely more my vibe, happier, calmer. As a first listen, I liked "Love is a wild thing" and "Mother" (I had to hold back tears as I was in public at that one) the best. Her voice is seriously good (if a bit overproduced) and the songs are seriously well constructed. The problems emerge after the first couple of tracks. I discovered she was helped by a crack team of hired hands in writing these songs. No matter, after all Morrissey couldn’t write a song to save himself, Marr gift wrapped him all of those pop gems. So what remains of Kacey when all is said and done? “Love is a Wild Thing” is about how love is wild? “Space Cowboy” is about how this jerk guy needs space? How clever. You can essentially reduce all of the lyrical prowess on offer here to the most surface level reflection on relationships with a handy sprinkling of new age sophistry which in essence boils down to a statement as profound as, “I like/dislike this person”. At the end of the day, no amount of production or slick songwriting can mask how little artistic ambition remains once you’ve stripped away the hired studio hands. It’s pathetic that this be included in a list that celebrates both historically significant albums and accomplished songwriters when this record is the antithesis of both do these things. It will be forgotten and it is a sad reminder of how much potential was lost during this generation of budding songwriters.
Pop country is one of the things I hate most in the world. This album at least incorporates some interesting other elements like synths and vocoders but it's not enough to make it palatable to me.

I found this pleasant to listen to after a rough week. It usually isn't my kind of thing, but it had a calming coffee-shop vibe to it that kept me listening. Only after looking her up on Wikipedia did I know that this qualified as Country.

This album is an instant classic. Much of it has a sort of dreamlike quality that feels akin to listening to music in a pleasantly altered state (which seems to be how some of the songs were written). Though not every song works in sequence, Kacey Musgraves adeptly wades through various genres which revolving around a country dreampop core where she really shines. The songs are tender, thoughtful, and though they can be a little on the nose, they are endearing enough for that not to be a drawback. The sound at its best is expansive and reminds of the Laurel Canyon sound.
