Reviews (page 7 of 8)
Sounds like a Natalie Merchant wanna be.
Most palatable country I've listened so far on this list. That doesn't make it great in my book, it's just average poppy stuff that is catchy and -fine- to listen to. I'd give it a 2,5 for sheer okayness, but, alas. I guess it's because I don't drive a Silverado.
Pop music steeped in country tropes. Simple lyrics and predictable progressions make this all very digestible radio friendly pop. And while it may push the envelope in that country sphere a bit, anyone who's not been living with musical blinders on has already heard this stuff elsewhere 20 years ago.
She has a nice voice. The production is good. I do not really connect.
Middle of the road - life has been produced out of it. A few nice lyrics and ideas beneath the polish.
This was a tough listen. Just the exact type of country music I dislike. Sounded very generic
Not awful, but pop-country is not my thing. I just found this boring and forgettable
Not my jam. Soft poppy....could no get thru much of it.
No horrible for country .
Oh "modern" country. The faint sound of a banjo or slide guitar here or there and we've got country music. This is a bowl of vanilla ice cream. Not the good kind with real vanilla, but the fake vanilla kind that you buy at a gas station. Not terrible but nothing to go back for seconds. High Horse is a banger though.
Just kind of bland pop country.
At first I thought it was going to be cool, by the end I was bored. The songs all just merged into one.
Not without some sweetness, but beige, bland, and utterly banal. I'm sure it was wildly popular.
Inoffensive but not my jam.
It is fine, not really a sound that makes me excited
I bet this is great if you love country pop music, all the feels ⭐⭐
Firstly, I was like ‘what, this album is only 2 years old?’ before I realised actually no, 2018 was 7 years ago now. I’m still not convinced that’s enough time to merit inclusion and also I just found it rather dull. She has a pretty voice and I’ve heard she’s a cool person but to me it was all a bit generic. The song Butterflies had a cool sound though. (2.5 stars)
Influential on what, exactly? Its just another poppy plastic album with country overtones (is she channelling Dolly?) cashing in. Nothing awful, nothing special. 2
There are a couple songs on here that are alright, but most of the album sounds like commercialized country that has been stripped of its soul produced purely for the sake of making it as commercially wide-appealing as possible. Combine that with the overdone vocal post processing and auto-tuning and it was almost too much to take. I found the album hard to finish, though the latter half seemed less unbearable than the first.
Perfectly pleasant and inoffensive. Can listen while working. But proof 1000 albums is too many.
Hoi Kacey, du! Da fallt mer grad sehr fest uf wie unterverträtte wiiblichi künstlerinne sind da bim Album Generator. Nonie vode Kacey Musgraves ghört zum ehrlich sii. Und ich weiss au biz wieso. Nee, gewoon nee.
- competent but so absolutely derivative ... 2.5 -
I can understand that this list will have albums I don't like, because of their genre, importance or historical value. I do not understand why this is here. It's pleasant enough in places, but totally formulaic and auto tuned to hell. The only bits that are memorable are because the lyrics are so bad. A couple of the short single instrument songs are kind of OK, but it really doesn't stick. A low 2 - only avoiding a 1 because it's too bland to be awful.
easy listening, breathy female voice, ok, but nothing grabs me
I don't know what it was about this album that just really didn't not vibe with me, maybe because it's more recent so I just hear more music like it in my day to day life, but it had a generic sound to me.
It's just okay, nothing earth shattering or particularly interesting.
Super weak sauce. Who listens to this?
Too smooth for me. The lyrics to Space Cowboy were funny.
Country died in the 80s
2 sterne
Meh.
1. burn - 1.5 2. lonely - 1.5 3. butterfliez - 1.5 4. uuorld - 1 5. mother - 2 6. uuild - 1.5 7. zpace - 1.5 8. happy - 1 9. velvet - 0 10. uuoman - 1 11. horze - 1 12. golden - 1.5 13. rainbouu - 1.5
I didn't like this one. It was trying to be super plane/understated. But the lyrics were just not good in my opinion, so it felt really flat. There are so many better country artists. A couple of the songs had a bit of pop charm, but overall as an album it was just not worth it.
Great production with a few stand out tracks. But this kind of music isn't really my thing
Lovely voice and the album is well produced. Otherwise, this is generic country-pop that could just as well have been Taylor Swift or one of many others, as far as I'm concerned. So inoffensive and bland. I was going to go for a 3 listening to the first song, but got so bored throughout the album that it's a 2.
Too country for me
Pretty bland
..
Mostly white noise
Didn’t mind this but nothing mind-blowing. Eno-country.
This is way too recent and way too bland to be considered for a list like this.
Not my kind of thing. Wasn't bad but wouldn't go back to it
Acceptably average modern country.
A couple uptempo songs, but country doesn’t do it for me
This is well made, but I'm just not the target audience for it. I don't really want to rate it, it's good, just not my thing.
I’ve always ignored Kacey Musgraves because a sleazy guy who was forever trying to play in my park was obsessed with her. Assumed I wouldn’t like her music if she attracted dudes like that. I was mostly right. She has a little girl voice and her lyrics are immature. The album is overproduced for her stripped down sound. Didn’t hate it, didn’t love it.
Country pop moderno. No sé qué pinta aquí.
Every bit as nothing as I'd remembered (it did win the Grammy for best album), but "Velvet Elvis" is a jam so there's that
I think that Bo Burnham’s “Pandering” has ruined a lot of modern country music for a lot of people. Righteously and justifiably. This album basically felt like “Pandering: the Tween Girl Version! <3” It’s all butterflies and wildflowers and horsies and “rivers running to the sea” and blah and yadda and so forth. You could madlip the whole thing just using LiveJournal icons from 2004. I liked “Same Trailer Different Park” but obviously this album is more marketable. Which means it’s more bland. I dunno. It’s not for me. It feels hollow and dumbed down in a calculating sort of way. I’m just struggling to believe a thirty year old woman claim that she “didn’t know she could feel happy and sad at the same time!” Really, Honey? Cuz. Not to be mean but the main character in Inside Out was 11.
There are probably 1000 more deserving albums from 2018 to put on this list.
Fluffy pop record of which I may ask: Why exactly is it listed, here? I mean: not bad, well produced, good songwriting etc. But all in all still generic radio stuff that shouldn‘t be jamming a spot in the „b4 u die“-list…really, so far I nearly always understood the decisions apart from my liking. But with this one everything seems meaningless.
Bland. Doesn't sound any different to the hundreds of country pop singer/songwriters. 2/5
This was a fine listen but didn't blow me away. Her voice is nice and she wastes no time getting into each song. Most are quick (13 songs on a 45 minute album), but overall just average. As others have noted, there are some really cringey/weird lyrics. 4.5/10 (2.25/5)
Never heard Of Kacey Musgraves. Although I dont mind some Country and some Pop, never liked the two together. While this album had a couple of songs I thought were ok, the album as a whole dragged for me. Couldnt really see why this is a must hear.
Auto tune Claire de lune Dark side Of the moon Billy Joel She's lost control Corporate rock Rubber Soul E-Z-E The Oh Sees Napalm Death Screaming Trees Blurry Face Picked up the pace Rita Hayworth Gave good face 33 rpm God bless R.E.M. sophisticated Minutemen Psycho Killer Album filler Browser wars Fake Gorillaz Deep thoughts Parquet Courts Now who's wearing Denim shorts Ride on time Number eight Come as you are Don't be late Nonsense reviews blue suede shoes Kacey Musgraves I give her two
I've only recently become privy to how overproduced modern country is becoming. One would think that autotune and all of the other modern pop sensibilities would run contrary to what the genre represents. Still, as an enjoyer of musical junk food, unplugging my mind to this one wasn't all that bad. Whatever slot that this album occupies could have very easily gone to Emergency & I. No, I'm not being a petty asshole because one of my favourite album didn't make the list
# 357 : I could listen to it, but it's bland and boring. Bland modern country pop with terrible teenage diary lyrics. I won't listen again and I feel like sometimes this list mistakes "you must listen to this ALBUM before you die" with "Hey, this was popular during 20xx, or had a couple hits on it" with importance. High Horse is worth a mention though.
This was fine, 2.5 probably
A bit dull
Soulless, boring, country-pop.
Pretty, but unremarkable. I'll keep it on the main system for Shuffle but it won't go on a mobile device for choosing to listen to while on the go.
Not offensive, but like listening to an episode of the OC
Sockersött men inte särskilt bra.
Inoffensive, unexceptional, but goes down sweet and easy. 2.5 rounding up for the banjo frog. Oops then Spotify played some Tom Petty and I was reminded how good this kind of thing can actually sound when it is a little less slick.
Bland pop country with cheesy lyrics. Meh.
Country pop moderno. No sé qué pinta aquí.
Now, I’m a big fan of good pop music and keep up with what’s current and trending. When this popped up today I got excited to see what it’s all about, but got pretty disappointed pretty quickly. None of the melodies felt original, the music is all toned down and over-produced, her vocals, while pleasant, have little variation and the lyrics are oftentimes very simple and uninteresting. To not be compared to better pop artists out there, I would’ve liked to have heard more country here. Wish I had more to say, Kacey!
Pretty standard pop/C&W teen starlet affair. 2.5 stars.
It's like she recorded the same song over and over again.
So so and not my taste
2 stars - dig the folkier elements on some tracks, but not the overall style.
oh god, she has millions and millions of streams and clearly it's my fault, but I wanna die after this.
Probably a 2.5 but I’m rounding down. Slow burn is great! I just don’t like country music so the rest isn’t a hit for me. Plus some of the rhyme scenes are reallyyyyyyyy predictable
Country pop moderno. No sé qué pinta aquí.
It's quite pleasant but not really one of the greatest albums ever produced? Am I wrong?
Way too much of a repetitive sound and includes very cheesy lyrics. Not really my cup of tea, as it is very forgettable for me.
2.5, country taylor swift for sure, liked Slow Burn and Space Cowboy
Pretty standard pop country that I didn't know I needed to listen to before I died.
I wasn't crazy for the singles from this album cycle when they were new, but now that I've listened to the full album...I REALLY don't get it. This is like the blandest, dullest, most boring album, I swear. I get pleasant "vibe music", I listen to that a lot. So Kacey going "dream pop" should work, but it doesn't help that it has the flattest production I've ever heard in my life, uninspired arrangements, and surprisingly weak vocals across the board. I do like Kacey, the singles from Same Trailer Different Park are so good, and I'm even partial to some of the songs from Deeper Well (and Justified from Star Crossed was good too). But I cannot wrap my head around what people see in this one, it's easily the most uninteresting thing she's ever released.
Minimal production, singer/songwriter country. Feels a little like Taylor Swift - just barely disguised songs about something or someone in real life. Not my thing.
Meh, seemed like a pretty one note kinda album.
Many many years ago I tried some country albums to try to be open-minded since a bunch of my friends loved country, but it just isn't for me 99% of the time. Spotify still thinks I want country in my daily/weekly rollups. Anyway, Kacey Musgraves vocals kind of remind of Dolly, but the music itself feels more folksy/indie (like early 2000s female vocalists). She's a good vocalist, but I'm not sure this album belongs on this list. Dentist office music.
Not bad but also blah. Nice voice for one song but they were all so dumb. 2 stars for the song about mothers. Haha
Kinda catchy but mostly forgettable.
FAVTRAXS: Oh, What A World / Happy & Sad / Rainbow LEASTFAV: Lonely Weekend / Wonder Woman
Mid Album.
Much too pop-oriented to grab me. I find the lyrics and the musicality a bit too simplistic. The musicianship is studio top-notch, no feeling allowed. I couldn't listen to the whole album--I heard the first few then started skipping ahead for the next few. Just not my thing.
Twee chill out music. Clever and artful but a bit too saccharine for me.
Not as bad as I thought it’d be!
music to pick up a grand half-caf hazelnut macchiato by
Lovely voice but not my thing.
This wasn't horrible, but it was too popish for me.
Way too syrupy for me
Never heard of this before and I would have been happy if I never had to listen to it in my lifetime. Oh well.
Very well produced album, with an impressive attention to details for the genre, nice variations along the way, sometimes being country, other times being groovy pop, soft rock or even dream pop. Otherwise, this is still your average pop album that nobody will remember a few years later.
Cotton wool in music form - superficially pretty but lacking in ballast or substance. Musgraves's singing is the vocal equivalent of Switzerland - maddeningly neutral. "Texas is hot, I can be cold Grandma cried when I pierced my nose" Now there's a couplet for the fucking time capsule.
Country pop moderno. No sé qué pinta aquí.
sadly fenced in
Rainbow is good. The rest of the album is just too fuckin happy.
I have no idea why this album was included in the 1001, but now I can say I've listened to it. Deeply unremarkable.
Meh. 2/5
I feel like a white teenage girl listening to this. 4.5/10
Taylor swift reskin
She has a nice voice and writes pretty songs, but this fell kinda flat for me. Nothing about it was very interesting or moving, almost had a generic feel or something. Can’t quite put my finger on it, it just wasn’t really my thing.
My favorite song was High Horses.
I get why this album in on the list, but it's not my jam.
Country Pop, where there hardly is any Country, leaving mostly Pop. Which is a problem, considering what Pop has become in the last 10 - 15 years. The lyrics are especially bland (just listen to the opener Slow Burn for a prime example). 2/5
The most basic of basic pop
Nice voice, decent music, but boring
This is the first album that I know reasonably well and feel is pleasant enough - that I am absolutely going to pan. There is nothing special here. This is off-brand Taylor Swift with a country twang. I personally love pop music and have come to accept that some syrupy music is actually lovely when the mood strikes. This is not it. The lyrics are trite, the production is limp, the songwriting is pedestrian. I don't hate it for what it is, I despise it for what it tries to do and fails to be.
Lyricism criticism mysticism fanaticism
failure swift
Hmmm ... modern country music. Sounds ok. Bute leaves nothing behind. One wonders why Kacey Musgraves is so popular but you probably have to be more into this kind of music to understand that.
white girl fantasy
It's very well produced pop, but the songwriting is a bit too middle-of-the-road for my tastes. Slow Burn sounds like a Tesco value Casimir Pulaski Day by Sufjan Stevens. It's not terrible, by all means, just a bit bland.
I thought the first couple of songs were actually decent and held my attention, but from there the album slowly descends to cringe levels of well…..cringe, lyrics wise, and also blandness musically, which is a bit of a shame because Kacey has a lovely voice, and the album’s production is actually kinda nice. I feel this could’ve/should’ve been better.
Tää poppiscountry on vähän vaikeeta mulle. 2/5
I found this was trying to be everything with the country sprinkled in, I guess thats not a bad idea but it just didn't mesh for me. The production was over the top trying very hard to capture a pop audience i could not make it through the whole thing
Not really something in my library
You can't go TOO wrong with a pretty voice and a guitar, but it's normie af
I quite liked the first track, once I got over the fact that it's basically "Old Man" by Neil Young with different words. The rest of the album was pleasant enough, in a "this is definitely a 2 star album" way.
Must hear? Not really. It was basic and bland
2,5
Her voice is beautiful. But every single song on the album is the same. I remember how popular this album was when it dropped, and I can see why. But it's also a good explanation as to why I'm so rarely drawn to recent pop releases. Favorite track: High Horse
Unsure why this is praised so highly. It’s got done good lyrics, but the music is rather one-more. Each song blends into the next. Meh.
OK, inoffensive soft country. Personally think Jewel does it better
It’s interesting but I don’t like country and by interesting I mean county music discovered Wilco and Phil Elverum
1001 albums to listen to before you die template. Genre: country Instruments: 2/5 Modern Translation: 2/5 Dance Potential: 1/5 Listening Location: driving home from various holiday plans Favourite Song: Wild Horses Made me feel: ambivalent. Most of the songs sounded the same and that wasn’t necessarily a good thing for this album.
Kacey Musgraves walked so Taylor Swift can fly. Still boring. Still basic. 5/10
Okay, that was actually a pretty nice album, boring, but it didn't sound anything as your typical country music, more like a positive pop star, which is nice to hear. I would give it a nice and average note of 3/5, but I was definitely lied to by Kacey. Song "Space Cowboy" is not about Cowboys from the Space, or about Cowboy Bepop. Instead, it should be named Space COMMA Cowboy. Terrible advertisement, which made me dislike this album. Very disappointed, 2/5.
jos jollain radio hedille menee pelkkiä vitosia, niin pakko antaa tällekin. täysin sama asia tässä pienellä kantri twistillä..Hey man, slow down Slow down Idiot, slow down Slow down... sad shit.... 2010 popitustahan . gneeristä (generic) PÄÄHÄNPISTOSANA... TARVI PELÄTÄ TOLLASIA... respektfullia respektfullia propsit annetaan...tarvi pottuilla.. slow burn
A Swift-wannabe writes generic boring country pop ballads with shitty tasteless hooks and lyrics that lack any expressive form of emotion. The most interesting songs is shit like "High Horse" which is nothing more than a country-infused basic disco beat. It's consistent, the production is nice and spacey, and there are some ok songs on here. But it's mostly trash.
It was fine - all the songs had a similar sound. I won’t run to listen to it again, but I wouldn’t shut it off.
Bland and overproduced.
Not really my bag soz
This is a fairly anodyne country pop album with an overly tuned, saccharine vocal. Musically fine if not particularly interesting. The songwriting is notably bad. I hope I had more interesting things to talk about when I was 20. Fave Songs: None. Favorite comments from another reviewer: "Too much time rolling around in the satin sheet production, not enough time on the writing. When they aren't outright clunkers, they're pap. And when when they're not pap, the drippy aesthetic makes them sound like it."
doesn't stand out
This seems like a pretty average country album. I don’t really like country.
2. Reminding me of early Taylor Swift. Not terrible, bu not my cup of tea.
this really has got the "popular music" vibe to it huh. very much not a fan of that vibe myself, bores me to tears. she does have a really nice voice though, so even if the songwriting and general sound does nothing i won't give it a 1
Not interested
It's good but far from something I would enjoy returning to. Gets samey pretty quickly for me but I'm not really a fan of country so there's that.
Well, it sounds nice at least. Even if the sound is reductive, the engineering is overdone and the writing and vocals lack heart. The real issue here is that this record feels really artificial–it's as if Weyes Blood and early Taylor Swift fused into one person and decided to make an album under the condition that it was written in one day with the goal of being superficial and winning awards.
Is this what's become of country music?
Pop country, I suppose. I knew one song but I find this music completely uninspired.
Slow burn is OK Lonely weekend is not my jam Butterflies is OK Space Cowboy is OK Mother is not my jam Love is a wild thing is not my jam Happy & Sad I didn't notice Velvet Elvis - disgust Wonder Woman - bored High Horse - this is neat Golden Hour - didn't notice Rainbows- OK 2/5
If this is considered one of the "1001 albums you must listen to before you die", I'm questioning the legitimacy of the people making this list. Problem just grabbed it randomly from a pile of albums to fill a spot on the list? Pretty boring pop with a slight country feel. Nothing really stands out on the album and it definitely not memorable.
Decent songwriting but boring trite lyrics and very sickly sweet style, def not my thing
Yeah, its country pop. I don't hate it, but it's just a million miles from my style of tunes. Production isn't bad, and there is some interesting electronic additions to some tracks, but overall it's very samey songs to my ear.
Some nice pop songs
Ah I don’t like it. It’s fine. It’s well produced? It’s fine? I just find it a bit annoying really.
Definitely overrated pop album that does have some nice moments but also some generic weaker moments as well. She has a good voice but the lyrics are hit and miss. I definitely prefer her two previous albums.
Nice voice but it got old pretty quick. Last song was the best of the bunch
Well produced norm-core pop centred on a young woman longing for connection, meaning, romance and magic. Longing is one of the best lyrical themes for pop and i am cautiously curious after the first track. But it soon becomes obvious that the album is dominated by very basic and unoriginal lyrics. Tasteful but safe and boring music production. First previously unknown artist for me in this project
good modern day country. nice voice.
Taka słabsza Taylor Swift
Pop-Country that just didn't do a thing for me.
I’m not hearing anything transcendent whatsoever. It’s bland and uneventful at least up to track 10, I’ll fast forward trough the rest and get over it
To be honest I’m not really much into pop so I was a bit sceptical when I saw this album come up as it is a bit more country pop and I think I was right to be. There are a good handful of enjoyable snippets throughout the album and I appreciate the singing as well but none of the songs really do much for me, at most I find some of them okay such as ‘Golden hour’ and ‘Lonely weekend’ but then a fair few, especially in the middle of the album, just seem very boring and I can’t really shake the feeling of how similar some of the songs sound. I guess also Kacey’s country accent and constant use of the acoustic guitar are a reminder that this does have country elements to it but I feel it also holds it back instrumentally as well as I think this could be a good pop album with more interesting production and a change in pace every now and again. However, I probably won’t return to this and if I do it’ll only be for a small collection of songs
meh
Didn't like it, bad lyrics, surprised it's on this list
i really, really don't like this music. i'm also loathe to dish out 1* reviews so i find myself trying to find some kind of hook. i think i need to be from rural US to enjoy this. ugh
So I'm fighting hard against my prejudices against country pop to give this a fair crack before dismissing it. First 3 tracks or so I'm thinking so far, so formulaic. Somewhat incredulous that Rolling Stone have this around halfway in a list of 500 greatest albums OF ALL TIME, but most of those lists are bollocks anyway, so moving on... A couple of tracks do stand out as actually interesting, Space Cowboy, Oh what a world. There is an interesting soundscape going on. The rest, well yeah sure its nice to listen to. Accomplished pop. The sort of thing I imagine gets played on stations like Smooth FM 24/7. Will I ever listen to it again, or do I think it's essential? Absolutely not.
...yawn so boring. Is it really an album I had to hear before I die?
Not bad, but also not interesting. Don’t feel the need to come back. 1 - bad 2 - average 3 - good 4 - great 5 - outstanding
I'm sure this is fine if you're into this kind of thing. I'm not.
Just wasn't feeling this one on this particular day. Tapped out about 1/3 of the way through. Just not my taste.
While this is not for me, I had a feeling this would be something my beautiful wife would like. So before I sent in my review, where I basically say this is terrible, I asked Mindy if she knew Kacey Musgraves. Well, paraphrasing her answer, She is awesome and her songs are great. She married a guy from Michigan and a lot of her songs reference the beauty of Michigan. She is great! They say opposites attract and she has certainly attracted me, but this is an example of our opposition. Maybe I was blinded by the upcoming Prince album, but I didn't hear anything about Michigan. I did not hear her great songs. I thought it was person with some pretty basic, similar sounding songs where she was torn between country and soft pop, without hitting either. I remembered Velvet Elvis because who doesn't love Elvis? Did nothing for me. Again, maybe because I have a 5 star review coming up! 2 Just because Mindy likes her and I love Mindy
1/27/2023 songwriting was good, definitely not my usual dose of country music, but not awful. not a huge fan of the music itself, though. "rainbow" stood out to me, looks to be the most popular song on the record at the time of recording. this song definitely was the most musically appealing to me personally.
Back in the day this would have been cut to 8 tracks. Too much filler not enough original content, saved by a pretty voice, but still generic country/pop.
I started out surprised at such a new album on the list, then realised that 2018 was 5 years ago. I enjoyed to begin with, it was country pop like early Taylor Swift, but a bit more country. Then I got called into a meeting and by the time I’d come back the spell was broken and I found it grating yet dull. Sorry hun.
Her voice is seriously good (if a bit overproduced) and the songs are seriously well constructed. The problems emerge after the first couple of tracks. I discovered she was helped by a crack team of hired hands in writing these songs. No matter, after all Morrissey couldn’t write a song to save himself, Marr gift wrapped him all of those pop gems. So what remains of Kacey when all is said and done? “Love is a Wild Thing” is about how love is wild? “Space Cowboy” is about how this jerk guy needs space? How clever. You can essentially reduce all of the lyrical prowess on offer here to the most surface level reflection on relationships with a handy sprinkling of new age sophistry which in essence boils down to a statement as profound as, “I like/dislike this person”. At the end of the day, no amount of production or slick songwriting can mask how little artistic ambition remains once you’ve stripped away the hired studio hands. It’s pathetic that this be included in a list that celebrates both historically significant albums and accomplished songwriters when this record is the antithesis of both do these things. It will be forgotten and it is a sad reminder of how much potential was lost during this generation of budding songwriters.
Just doesn't do it for me. Lyrically it doesn't reach me and musically I find it fairly bland.
Inoffensive. She’s got a great voice and the songs are well written and produced. It’s just not my thing.
Not for me
Oei, dit was even doorbijten. Hoe zoetsappig!
I don't generally like country music. I don't generally like pop music. I don't generally like this.
Vocal agradável, um country pop bem executado.
Nice voice. Too country.
This is the kind of music you get jammed down your throat because you told Spotify that you liked one Taylor Swift song. Just a lot of nothing.
Radio friendly pop/country. Was technically fine, but I'm not planning to listen again.
so it’s like Taylor Swift but even MORE country? not that great, pretty boring imo feeling a strong 3/10 from this album but I’ll round it up to a 4/10 simply because this isn’t Taylor Swift
Honestly not the fan. I think her voice sounded immature. It literally reminded me of kids bop which I do realize is an exaggeration however I also felt like her lyrics were childish???? You can tell she has potential and her sounds are good though.
Call emergency, the curator of this list seems to have slipped on banana peel, which caused them to pick an album that really doesn't belong here! [Then again, this is such a frequent occurrence, I wouldn't bother the emergency services]
Something about this didn’t work for me. It’s like the album is trying to hard to be light and carefree.
Please no more country tinged pop. Slightly more interesting than Aimee Mann but still very very bland
A quick spot of research shows this to be country pop. Completely out of the realms of music I’d choose to listen to, but let’s keep an open mind and discover something new. Songs I already knew: none Favourites after listening: Space Cowboy, Velvet Elvis Perhaps it’s just that my ears aren’t acclimatised to the nuances of country music, but I’m not sure why this warrants being on a list of albums I must hear. I think I don’t really understand country pop in general. I can totally understand how somebody like Merle Haggard is country, but this is just generic pop music sang in a Texan accent. Sonically, it sounded fine. There was nothing wrong with it at all, it was just generic pop music that (to me) gets diluted within all the rest that sounds the same.
Not for me, mostly boring. I liked the song "High Horse," because it was one of the only tracks with any energy behind it.
ok. fairly generic country po. not really my bag.
😐
The sounds are quite pleasant but nothing at all sticks out as being particularly interesting.
Generic country girl. Lyrics are just as generic and designed by the country version of Benny Blanco probably. You can insert any female "country" artist and it will sound the exact same. Need my Daisy Dukes, straw hat, cowgirl boots, and some whiteclaws. Hell ya bruther.
There was a huge amount of discourse around this LP when it dropped, especially concerning how Musgraves was 'reimagining' country. To that end, the album does start out strong - even if the songwriting is a tad stream-of-consciousness, the melodic ideas are fresh for the genre and the production is air-tight. As the album progresses, however, this clean execution starts to sound more like the same sterile, bitter taste of any other modern pop-country artist. Somewhere around 'Space Cowboy' the melodies curdle into the same plasticine Max Martin progressions we've heard 1000 times before, and the LP gives up completely on sounding like anything other than pop-country radio filler.
Most of the songs were very similar to each other.
I struggled with this. Nothing offensive, but mainly a bit bland.
Good!
Some of the songs that were more folk were ok. The whole record seemed safe, overproduced, and boring.
Just not to my taste, nothing materially wrong with it however.
ikkje for meg
pop gurl
Even though I'm a modern pop apologist, this album is still very mediocre. It's a very clean album but probably to a fault. Highlights: Butterflies, Happy and Sad, Rainbow. 2.5
Nope
I quite like alt-country. Jessie Sykes for example is a songwriter of endless depth. This leans towards a poppier end of the spectrum however.... and is the country music equivalent of a Mcdonalds Big Mac meal. Tasty, but you're quickly left wanting something more substantial after the initial buzz has worn off. Like her voice though.
A weird combination of very safe country music with a nice dreamy (almost psychedelic) quality. Overall it's nice, but too pleasant to be interesting. Also some of the lyrics are laughably lame: "Texas is hot, I can be cold, Grandma cried when I pierced my nose". Rating: 2.5/5 Playlist track: Oh, What a World Date listened: 13/07/22
Ehhhh. I will say the vocals and production in particular are better than it needed to be for a generic country pop album. I remember when it came out, and many people that year were very polarized about it. I remember mostly hearing good things, I thought it was pretty forgettable. I listened to it a few days ago and I can't recall a single thing from it. Not terrible, just not exactly sure why there was so much praise for this. It was definitely too pop-y and gummy in a lot of parts for my own taste. 2.5/5
Some cool songwriting and slightly experimental stuff but I’m not one for country or teenage girl music
ikkje min sjanger
Kjedelig
Disney movie credits music. But not like Lion King. I'm talking like Wreck it Ralph 7: The Ralphening, which has 23% on Rotten Tomatoes. "A country pop record, Golden Hour also contains elements of disco" Basically the antithesis of my music taste.
Country pop combines two genres of music that I find most devastatingly annoying. This wasn't as bad as I thought, so maybe two wrongs can partially redeem each other. Still pretty bad though.
Pish in my ears. Should been called ‘Golden Shower’
Coffee shop background music. Bland, though pleasant and inoffensive despite the terrible lyrics. Why it's on this list is a complete mystery though
The very definition of meh
2.5
As someone who doesn't generally dig mainstream country music, the general lack of it on the 1001 has been appreciated. However, as someone who doesn't generally dig mainstream country music, I was very interested to listen to Kacey Musgraves' "Golden Hour" in the hope that her reputation for defying genre norms and boundaries was well-earned. And I guess that reputation is somewhat well-earned. But not in a way that made me enjoy the album. "Golden Hour" features some pretty typical country songs, some indie singer-songwriter-ish songs with a bit of a country twang, and some pop songs with a country twang. Some of the indie ballads were fine, but not good enough to overshadow the pop and country songs, which did nothing for me. It's like trying to contain all of Taylor Swift's career phases within one album, and while I'm not a Swift fan her songs are still generally catchier and stick with you more. Overall, this was a pretty forgettable album.
It's a nice album... 2.5/5
Good voice production and all but it just never grabbed me.
Like the first track I think this album is a "Slowburn" it is all a bit samey for my eclectic taste.
I finally listened to this to be able to get back on track It was very syrupy. Deep inside there might be a half decent C&W album trying to get out of all the glossy production
I remember hearing this one after it came out and liking it quite a bit. Not sure if I am just not in the mood for it now or am if I am just into other things.
All a bit 'meh'. Standout tracks - Love is a Wild Thing & Golden Hour Probably wouldn't listen to this again but nothing too bad either
Not my thing at all. Got through about half of it but couldn’t do much more.
Quelle merde
Probably again just not for me unfortunately
Auto tuned country. Not as bad as I expected
It's country, and as much as it's pleasant, country doesn't do anything for me.
After suffering through the PJ Harvey album, this has been a soothing listen. Very backgroundy though. Nothing stands out, inoffensive stuff.
I'd heard good things so I was expecting something a bit more than middling fun country pop
Inoffensive Taylor Swift tribute act but nothing new. Happy & Sad the best of the lot.
This is just a bit dull. Saccharine country female voice, nothing that I can put my finger on as being particularly wrong (other than the lyrics getting quite kitschy every now and then), but nothing that's particularly stand out good either. This feels like the sort of thing that Taylor Swift has been doing for 15 years, but it doesn't have the oomph or the sass. 2/5, marginally better than yesterday.
Not my sort of music but it sort of held my attention so must be good. Sounded like the Sundays at certain points. Nothing grated here.
lol, poppy country music. Laaaaaaaame. 2/5.
It’s alright, but nothing impressive
Mmmmkay. Vuoden 2018 levy ja tällä materiaalilla listoilla? WTF. Tällainen levy on tehty vähintään kerran kuukaudessa viimeisen 20v aikana...
Bit too poppy to really be country
Not too bad, just not for me.
2.3 - Decent listen, but just not a genre I really enjoy.
I could find nothing special here. Sounded like very generic country-lite stuff.
Kul med något modernt! Hypead countrypop. "Love is a Wild Thing", "Oh, What a World", "Mother", och "High Horse" är bra! "Love Is A Wild Thing" har en fin melodi i refrängen. I High Horse hörs inte lika mycket country, utan är istället mer fräsch discopop. BRA! Bästa låt: High Horse.
When she started to sing I immediately got turned off by her voice. I really dislike this genre of commercial music that sounds like its being sung by a 14 yr old girl. I suppose the great majority of listeners like it and it sells tons, but its not for me. Its good to see some newer albums on this list but I cannot fathom why this particular album made it.
She has a good voice, but everything from the album is quite forgettable and overproduced.
Lovely voice, pleasing music and some insightful, albeit obvious, lyrics (never really going anywhere, caught up in a web I was getting kind of use to staying there; to stop all this thinking, just keep on drinking) but also some cheesy ones (Texas is hot, I can be cold, Grandma cried when I pierced my nose). Not my cup of tea, too melancholy, a lot of fluff and light pop. At first, I thought if I was ever in that type of mood or feeling (not sure specifically what mood/feeling; positivity, optimistic [oh, what a world], heartache, gloomy, empathetic [Mother]) I’d enjoy the album, but the more I listened to it, just seemed like a lot of B side songs and I’d never be in a mood to listen to it. Looks like Slow Burn, Space Cowboy and the closing title Rainbow are liked the most on the album and I was hoping to find a diamond in the rough, but I was exhausted listening to the album by the end. Again, good voice and while I don’t have a problem of someone sounding like themselves; it’s who there are and if they have a specific ‘sound’ that people seem to like, go with it. But I was really bored with it, just dull and repetitive sound to me. I’m starting to think (hope?) that these 1001 albums are those you might not have necessarily listen to as a norm, partly since I haven’t been too exposed to the 14 I’ve seen so far. Because yeah, this album wouldn’t be on my list of top 10,001 albums, let alone 1,001 that you should listen to before you die.
Its not for me but I could see the appeal if I was into that style of pop/country crossover.
Overall, I liked this album more than I thought I would. That being said, I don't love it. It's a bit too saccharine for me. It didn't keep my attention all the way through, and quite a few of the tracks sound like the kind of songs one hears on 'American Idol'-type contest shows. On the plus side, some of the songs are very nicely written and performed. She's definitely a talented songwriter, musician, and singer. I have a feeling if she add a little more realness/rawness to her songs (I heard hints of it in some of these tracks), I'd be drawn in more. PS -- I'm also glad to see an album made just a few years ago make this list.
Chatooooo
The trouble with all these new country albums, for me at least, is that there is nothing to mark one apart from the other. They melt into one another, as indistinguishable as a teaspoon of lukewarm water in an ocean of blandness. I listened to a few tracks to make sure I was right... I was.
Pop Country is still Country Music at the end of the day(and as my history suggests, I'm definitely no fan of 2010s music either). This was long, drawn-out Corporate Country that was a complete drag to get through. At least Kacey Musgraves loathes the orange tyrant, and I won't pull a reverse "separate the art from the artist", so the album was a big miss for me. Favorite Track: "High Horse".
I hated pretty much everything about this. 1/10
Wait until you see how poorly I viewed Taylor Swift, let alone the Walmart version of her... just no.
This is the definition of basic. Force anyone to make an entire album at gunpoint and most people could manage at least this. The lyrics are hilariously bad, I would have preferred some moon/spoon/june lines over this cringe-fest. It's over-produced to within an inch of its life, and auto-tuned the rest of the way. Soulless, emotionless, inspirationless, and how the fuck did it get on this list?
Not a huge fan of this
Boring, saccharin sweet, middle of the road pop with a hint of country.
This is everything wrong with modern music. I want to set this on fire. 1/5
Nice background music. Not impressed
Conventional, unoriginal, and generic. I do not know why this album could be on this list other than paid advertising. Will not revisit.
2/10 She has a good voice, but country/pop is not my cup of tea.
not my type of music didn't even listen :(
Si pudiera le pondría un 0
I hate this.
Did not expect this feeling like a cowgirl and the wind is brushing my hair
I'm making a list of 1001 albums people should listen to. What's the problem? I'm stuck at 300. Easy, just randomly select 700 or so! That is the only way this, along with a lot of others on here make it. 1.
Musical wallpaper. Just a formulaic sound coupled with trite lyrics. She's one of hundreds.
too country
Why is this on here?
😴unnecessary chick music
Kacey Musgraves has some good songs, but it seems none of them managed to make an appearance on this album. Her voice is so-so to my ears for the most part, and a full album of it doesn't sound great. The lyrics don't ever wow me, and a lot are just plain lame.
The textbook definition of "lowest common denominator". This mindless commercial product managed to capture the worst traits of the music industry and the blandest, most impersonal musical trends of the time and fuse them into a pure diamond of stale emptiness. This type of music is clearly designed to be both totally innocuous and instantly forgettable - probably because its sole purpose is to act as soothing background noise that makes people feel all fuzzy and carefree when shopping or sitting in a coffee shop. As a matter of fact, I zoned out after a few songs, and couldn't remember what I was listening. I don't even hate it - it's so vacuous and pointless that my brain barely registers it. 1/10
Sounds like a 90s leftover, somewhere between Sheryl Crow and Heather Nova. I can’t see any impact on music here, if anything, it feels like a step backward.
I’m sure this album would speak to me if I were a 15 girl growing up in Oklahoma. For me it’s just plain awful.
Incidental tracks from Virgin River / Gilmore Girls where the characters contemplate lost loves or deep introspection around their feelings etc. etc. etc.
Seichte Popmusik
Little girl voice. Dumb lyrics.
not listening to modern country, not even giving it a chance
Didn't finish it. Bland
this girls IQ is probably very similar to the average mosquito. this is the whiniest, most annoying thing i have ever put in my ears. Truly terrible forgettable music
Just not for me.
Not for me
Not my style
How is this relevant to music history in any way?
