I tried - I really did - just not my thing. While it has a rhythm and beat to it, I don’t totally understand this music.

Since 10 seconds in I was just hoping for it to end.

Remembering the cringe of when I set my flip-phone’s ringtone to “FUCKING HOSTILE” in Middle School.

I liked this album. I had to start it a few times until I was really in a metal mood, and it took a few songs in for it to grow on me. Not my favorite metal songs, but still got me head-banging a bit. I still prefer metal without screaming vocals, but I think this album helped me appreciate those vocals more than before. Favorite song: Live in a Hole Worst song: Walk

I'm not a fan of yelly music. It's hard to take it seriously; it comes across as comical to me, like a bunch of little angry boys raging. But I guess this album isn't the worst of the yelly music.

Not my thing, but not bad either.

This wasn't too bad of a metal album for me. Would I revisit this whole thing? Maybe not, but if some songs came on shuffle I wouldn't mind. That being said, I made the grave mistake of doing a deep dive of the band and its members, and let's just say I'm a little turned off by it. 3.5...maybe a 4 on a good day. Today's not a good day.

Oh gosh. I just pretty much suffered through this album and hated every moment. My 10 yo daughter asked me why anyone would listen to this, and I suggested it would annoy your parents and that could be fun? "Poor parents!" she said. Even to annoy my parents I couldn't listen to this.

Treading old ground in many respects - real tough guy shouting about how little respect there is these days, violence to follow if you to continue with the disrespect - this is old man on front porch music in truth. on first listen, I was preparing to knock this album all the way down but after a few listens it started to grow on more. There’s something almost hypnotic about this wall, this brick of sonic pressure, bashing in your brain and I got caught up a little more in some of the riffs. I don’t know, I was having a rough day so maybe this acted like a release valve? Is that the secret to this otherwise unlistenable music?

Pretty cool album, but no idea what’s being sung. Probably a good album to listen to before a sporting event. It’s late so I’m not too inspired to write much about an album I didn’t hate but didn’t love all that much. In Pantera’s defence, I’m not much of a metal head, so maybe this album deserves a higher score🙃

well.. although i am not happy to see this album pop up, i am glad to be working from home today - alone - so i can turn this shit up and listen to it the only way it should be consumed. LOUD I think Pantera (and metal) has its time and place. Like I *might* put one of these songs on a workout playlist. Or if I'm working on my car. Or to torture a prisoner. Growing up in Texas these guys were a big deal. Toxic masculinity at its core. These guys are also right wing nut jobs. So Fuck them.

I was a teenage dirtbag. Not in the parlance of our current time, where a celebrity like Reese Witherspoon will post awkward photos from her teenage years where she had braces, then type “cringe” as a caption and #teenagedirtbag. I was a teenage dirtbag in the traditional sense: a weird, cigarette smoking metal head; a total societal misfit. To prove my dirtbag credentials: The first concert I went to of my own accord was a split bill of White Zombie and Pantera in 1996 at the Brendan Byrne Arena in NJ. (Now I’m not saying metal heads are dirtbags, but at that time, if you were 15 and listening to Pantera, chances are you weren’t one of “the cool kids”. ) A little known (at the time) band called Deftones opened the show. Being the hipster that I am, I had already known about them and owned Adrenaline. I must’ve been one of maybe 100 people in the arena who were excited to see them. It was rough going for them. Pantera fans were not interested in buying what the Deftones had to sell and made their disapproval known throughout the set. Still, Chino and company managed to coax a few mosh pits out of the crowd and it was going about as successfully as it could, given their mostly unknown status… Until Chino decided to go crowd surfing. Towards the end of their set, he jumped from the stage and into the crowd. He finished out the song, getting tossed around atop the crowd, occasionally screaming his lyrics into the mic. The song ended and he returned to stage, missing a shoe. “Who stole my fucking shoe?” He says. “Bunch of thieves in here tonight.” He argued with the crowd a little bit, gave them the finger and moved on to the next song. A minute or so later, about 50 feet from the stage, dead center, a sneaker flies through the air, hurtling towards Chino and hits him right upside the head, mid-song. The NY Giants or Jets should have drafted whoever threw that shoe to be their quarterback in ‘96. My man dropped a dime right on Chino’s head in a dark arena. It was an amazing toss and you could hear laughter and cheering throughout the crowd. Deftones finished up and White Zombie took the stage shortly after. Their show was a psychedelic horror trip with crazy video, pyrotechnics and lights. Highly entertaining. The crowd was weirdly subdued, but I guess tormenting the Deftones for 40 minutes drained them a little. Now, for the “relevant” part of this story: Pantera. I was never a huge Pantera fan. I liked Vulgar Display of Power back then, but that was about it: Cowboys from Hell was always cheesy to me and Far Beyond Driven had a few decent tracks, but was grating on the ears after a while. My friend who got the tickets was a fan, though, and at 15 you’re going to go to whatever concerts you can. They were touring “The Great Southern Trendkill” that year, which was a concept record about…the South rising again to kill all false metal (?). I’m projecting a little, but Pantera always kind of had a Lynyrd Skynyrd gone metal vibe to me. However, as we all know, that title actually belongs to Jackyl. A few weeks prior to this show, Phil Anselmo nearly died from a heroin overdose. Technically, he was dead for a few minutes, but was resuscitated. I know this because he made a point of telling the audience about it in between songs and then announced his invincibility, saying “Nothing can kill me!” That was the lesson he took away. Not “maybe I should stop doing heroin” or “man, I’m lucky to be alive”. Nope…”I’m invincible”. That left a bad taste in my mouth. Pantera fans loved it that night, though, and maybe it was all for show…faux bravado for a rabid fanbase. Whatever it was, I felt dumber just having been in the room. I know I took the scenic route to get here and this might be my longest “review” to date, so I’ll touch on Vulgar Display of Power quickly then see myself out. It’s one of the most aptly named albums ever. It’s heavy, aggressive, blunt and lacking sophistication. Is that a bad thing? I don’t know. Pantera isn’t for me at age 40. Phil Anselmo certainly isn’t, either - his antics have only gotten worse over the years. Dimebag was an amazing player and his death was beyond tragic, but that’s where my appreciation of this band starts and ends. This is probably the best Pantera album and it is genre defining, so I think its inclusion here is warranted, but it’s hard for me to reconcile the music with Phil Anselmo’s persona. After all, he’s the one that’s screaming at you for 40 minutes.

As someone who bough Kerrang every fortnight in my teenage years to supplement the weekly inkies, 'metal' in the 90s lost me. 80s metal was just more fun and colourful even if it wasn't really 'metal'. Far better for escapism from small rural towns by the sea than the angry shouty men that came after it. This is ok. Still better than a lot of what came after it.

Anselmo is more interested in vulgar displays of white power these days.

Okay, I've heard it before I die (although it almost killed me). Hopefully I never have to hear this again. 1 star.

Mouth for war-guess I’d better get used to screaming. Lots of impressive riffs, lyrics are quite generic A New level -another great instrumental, but l hate the way he says unscarred by trials for some reason, guitar solo pretty cool👍 Walk-pretty good, vocals a bit better imo👍 Fucking hostile- like chorus, think verses a bit cliche This love - nice contrast between softer verses and more metal chorus. Would lose the spoken parts though.👍 Rise- great guitar work, otherwise okay. No good- not a very nuanced take, I was distracted by lyrics for this one Live in a hole- Not like other girls, again another great riff Regular people - good if long intro, again l like the contrast between verse and chores👍 By demons be driven- edgy stuff, I have not liked any of the spoken word Hollow- a change of pace from most of the album, not great All in all didn't really get into this album, not really my thing. By the end I felt as it l had heard the next song already 2/5

Well I've heard of Pantera and really wanted to like this album, but outside of Walk, just felt like it was too much of the same sound over and over. Hollow mixed it up a little, then went back to the sound of every other song. Definitely different, but not for me. 2 from me.

4.5 RIP DIMEBAG DARRELL AND VINNIE PAUL Okay with that out of the way I liked this one. I was wondering if we were ever going to see a metal album on this list and this is a solid starter. I’ve always viewed Pantera as the logical evolution of 1980s Metallica with a very similar but more varied type of thrash. Dimebag’s signature chugging is here in full force along with some gnarly breakdowns and gnasty bass. Face melting solos and some smash starts that’ll give even the most seasoned horror fan a real jump. And of course I have to mention Avenged Sevenfold’s cover of Walk which was actually my introduction to Pantera. An absolute blast front to back. There’s so much to keep me coming back again and again. Favorites: Mouth for War, Walk, Fucking Hostile, This Love, Rise, By Demons Be Driven (those harmonics 👌🏻), Hollow

2.5 Pantera was not on my 1001 Albums bingo card, but it was definitely a nice change of pace from what we've been listening to so far. That being said, I'm not much of a metal fan, as I find a lot of a bit too same-y and macho cheese, and while I enjoyed this album more than many others albums of the genre I've heard, it definitely fell into those traps for me (shoulda known from the album cover). I was also bummed cause I actually enjoy the song Cowboys From Hell and it's not even on this record (Walk is overrated imo). Would maybe re-visit songs - not sure about the full album. Favorite songs: Mouth for War, This Love, Hollow

First, I love the title of this album. "Oh my! Those are some rough vocals!" was my first reaction to listening. I'm often not a fan of being yelled at. But behind that voice was some pretty amazing guitar work that really grabbed my attention (especially as I'm not usually a rock guitar guy). And soon I found myself moving my head to the beat and finding that the guitar and voice were really working together. I liked "Mouth for War" (that part towards the end where it goes nuts), "Walk" has some hard swinging syncopated moments, and "Rise" kicks ass! The rest can get tiresome and make me beg for relief, but I was surprised how much of it I got into.

This is another one that is not for me. Some moments of the guitar play were okay, but the growling/screaming vocals just leave me hoping each track to please end quickly.

This is not music that speaks to me. I got the gist early on and then had to listen to the rest. Next!

One of the reviews for this album called it “punishing.” Throw in “tedious” and you got my summary.

It's a compelling album, without any doubt. It's not perfect, though. I must rate it four stars at least.

Ehdottomasti Panteran tiukoin levy - ei heikkoa hetkeä ja kokonaisuus pysyy todella tiukkana. Hyvä metallilevy siis kaiken kaikkiaan. Neljä bongoo tää mun mielestä ansaitsee, sillä on muokannut modernii metallia aikalailla aikanaan. Itse musa ei ehkä purase enää niin lujaa että voisin täydet tälle napauttaa. Mut sanottakoon toki että kyllä mulla tää c-kassu on vielä hyllyssä jos rupee joku oikeen korpeemaan. 4/5

Back when I was a metalhead I didn't really like Pantera and I still don't, although the reasons might be different now. The guitars on this album are pretty nice, but I find the vocals quite annoying. Despite the nice guitars, the music gets pretty repetitive. That makes it not interesting enough to pay too close attention, but it's still too intense and abrasive for pure background listening.

I listened to this right after a Sigur Rós album so it was pretty hard to adjust. The drums and guitar here are 5 stars, but I have a hard time with the voice. I can't imagine there's a better example of this kind of music, but it's just not for me.

Made it about halfway through, but I've heard it a few times in the past. Some surprisingly groovy parts, albeit extremely straight and very aggressive. Reminds me of growing up in rural New England.

This didn't make my ears blead. I liked the end boss kind of vibe. But the grunting is too much so I just skipped to the end after the second song. Which was surprisingly calm!(ish)

Musically I actually think this is executed really well, although it does start to hurt my ears at a certain point. Very intense. What I'm really not a fan of is the screaming/grunting, though. It's just not enjoyable to listen to!

Some of the guitars were good, but the vocals are just so bad I can't listen.

It doesn't quite have the songcraft of it's 80s counterparts but it's pretty good nonetheless.

It's funny to hear a music from Doom 1 in the wild (Mouth for war). I love metal so this was destined for a 5 ;)

3 metal?

Pantera for me will always make for a good listen with their signature aggressive groove metal. Vulgar Display displays the band at full force in that field, making for quite the classic metal record. The first 5 tracks especially are some of my favorite metal songs in general. The second half falls a bit short, but it's overall an excellent time. Favorites: "A New Level", "Walk", "Fucking Hostile", "This Love", "Hollow"

Fans of this album don't need to have their Chuck Norris knowledge acknowledged. They harbor resentment towards the Coen Brothers for lying about Fargo being based on actual events. Don't ask them to explain their body art. You don't have time to hear about their body art. For one thing, they despise the phrase "body art" and just call them "tattoos".

It was a struggle to get through the first several tracks, but everything from No Good through the end has actual musical material and moments of obviously skilled playing. It's dragged down by muddiness and calling a rut a groove.

Bad ass thrash metal album. No one ever did it quick like Pantera

Does better than the usual metal album at keeping things interesting and varied. The wide variety of rhythmic structures and guitar tones here keep the LP from falling into the usual metal doldrums of endless mid-heavy guitar tone and chugging riffs for 40 minutes straight.

Bit shouty. Exactly what you'd expect from the album name/art.

This is an unapologetically straightforward album with a name that lays plain, what you're getting into. I remember hearing this album for the first time. It compelled me! I couldn't resist the urge to bang my head, clench my fists, furrow my brow, twist my face and gnash my teeth as each track pounded and growled along. I wasn't generally a rage filled person, but the visceral force of this album was infectious. It gave me a means for realizing emotions I had packed away and provided me with some harmless catharsis. This album isn't really in my rotation list anymore, but it was great to hear it again. I can only point to a few albums that have taken me out of the blue like that, and I appreciate them each for what they helped me to learn about myself. As far as the music itself goes, its quintessential hardcore metal. There is no glam. The big hair is traded for shaved heads and sweaty mops. The skin tight pants are traded for ripped denim. These bands look more like the roadies, than the main attraction. That plainspoken affect of the artists carries through to the sound. The guitars grunts, growl, screech and wail, trading blues rock riffs for prog-esque atypical time signatures. The drums, instead of rolling along in the background with the occasional flourish or solo, are right at the forefront, pounding out the path and playing equal parts with all other instruments. The vocals are a gravel throated fist to the face, evoking all of the emotions folded up into each track. All of this is prepared with a simple production quality, much like how the perfect Texas Brisket only needs salt, pepper, and time (prove me wrong).

I hate this style of singing, so it was pretty much unlistenable for me.

It felt like I was under attack, which I suppose was the point. It was more physical experience than music like going on a fairground ride. Once you got over the adrenaline it was just not very exciting or interesting. There is music I like that does similar things but this just felt pointless.

Classic album artwork! As for the album itself, I can't make my mind up. The guitar riffs are ace, but feels dated now, maybe "you just had to be there, man!"?

Never been a metal fan but have come to appreciate to an extent. Some very good musicians here but I can't stomach the screaming lyrics. A few cuts in, I gave up on this.

this album really… confused me because I really hate this kind of metal music, but when I tried to think of what made me hate it, I felt hypocritical since there are other genres I love that have those same qualities I love hard rock (eg. Helter Skelter and Led Zeppelin) I love punk/post-punk (I love Le Tigre and I still need to get around to hearing Kathleen Hanna’s other stuff, Sonic Youth is amazing too, I also enjoy GRLwood’s songs but I hate that the singer is an awful person) I love Industrial (Nine Inch Nails, Trent Reznor all the way, bro) and I even enjoy some Grunge here and there (mostly Kurt Cobain’s discography which I don’t listen to often since it’s not really for me but when I do hear it I at least appreciate the hell out of it) And this is kinda why Swans is probably my favorite band, they have amazing diversity from album to album they started out as an Industrial Rock band that would shatter your eardrums every chance they could take, then they moved into post-punk and (in my opinion) made the weirdest post-punk for the time, like you got Joy Division that was making the more dark depressing stuff or Talking Heads who loved messing around and breaking the rules and getting kinda weird, but when you listen to Swans’ Children of God, it’s just so far distant and weird from any of the other stuff I’ve heard, it’s amazing to me anyway, after that they made post-rock and without spending forever talking about why I love it, their entire discography is just consistently amazing to me and I recommend you check them out if you’re a fan of Industrial, post-punk or post-rock, there’s probably a few albums they have that you’d enjoy (other super weird bands (that are difficult to label genre-wise) that I enjoy are Xiu Xiu and Kengo Iuchi, but that’s super weird stuff that you’re probably gonna have a hard time enjoying unless you’ve already been down the rabbit hole with other wild stuff) sorry, back to the album ughhhhh… I just hate it and I don’t know why I was even trying to give them the benefit of the doubt and hear their first album before this one and all it did was give me 2 albums to loath today it just sounds so douchey, I fucking hate every song my running theory is that it’s about the fanbase, the awful fucking fanbase like when I listen to this shit all I think of is some fat fuck who’s got his hair grown down to his ass crack, paired with a red bandana and a crusty, cum-stained t-shirt of whatever lame-ass band they need everyone to know they love they think they’re so tough and cool but they’re one big mac away from a heart attack like idk, this just sounds like neckbeard music for neckbeards who think they’re all hard and shit the lyrics sound like they were written by a fourteen year old who watched V for Vendetta (or Fight Club) and got “radicalized” there’s very little to enjoy about an album like this when it comes to a biased little shit like me, I’m gonna give it a 2/10 but even that feels too generous I mean fuck dude, I hated this so much I spent half the review talking about bands that I actually enjoy

HEAVY METAL BY DEFINITION!!!

i am thrash metal's newest fan, apparently? pantera absolutely went for it in this album, they held nothing back, they went so metal. i didn't fully realize how into metal i could get, or maybe it was the loud music while working, or those great guitars and drums! whatever it was, it really worked with pantera and this album. i think i'll be adding some of these to a workout playlist. mad respect for a great album cover. and to every song from the album being explicit on spotify.

I'm not very knowledgable on the genre of "thrash metal" and many of the adjacent genres and bands, so I don't have much of a basis for comparison. That said, this album's sound is what I correlated with Pantera. It turns out, this album was more or less their first full venture into metal that was AS heavy as what is on display on this album. In the beginning of my listening experience, I felt that the vocals had more screaming than I tend to like, but then some damn amazing metal rhythms and riffs would come along to smack me with a vulgar display of power (see what I did there?). This pattern continued on many, if not most, of the tracks, progressively acclimating me. By the end of the album, I was really kind of digging the off-tempo screaming and ridiculously good metal rhythm duality. This was a fun listen, and I'm definitely interested in exploring more of Pantera's discography!

It is a heavy metal album. I typically do not care for heavy metal. I listened to each song but some of them carried on a little too long so I skipped to the end of it. I see no need to listen to this album again. None of the songs were noteworthy.

If I enjoyed metal or rock music more, I think I would find this album amazing. I appreciate the emotion in the singing and lyrics and the instrumentals aren't awful, but just not my type of music at all. I'm kind of out of my depth with metal music, but I didn't dislike it as much as I expected. 3/10

"Vulgar Display of Power" is a remarkably heavy offering, and one can hear the inspiration in later bands where growling vocals put more into being loud but also with better clarity encouraging unification of listeners through sing-a-long. Musically, the driving beats the heavy distortion sounds clean on this album, driving home the point of clarity. Where heavy metal seemed to embrace chaos, there was a touch of beauty here as well. A fair example is "By Demons Be Driven" with its clear hook, but modest drums, loud and screaming vocals leaving no doubt to what is being sung, with chants of "beckon the call" complementing the chorus, giving us the dark and gritty. In an interesting change of pace, we get a ballad in "Hollow" until about halfway through when the emotions explode into anger imploring their best friend to emerge from an apparent vegetative state. However, this is about as interesting as the album gets. The energy only lasts so long if you are not doing something else to match with it.

Reminded me quite a bit of metallica - honestly wondered if they shared a singer at first lol. Pretty dated, but still fun to listen to. Album seemed to be heavily back-loaded.

My favorite Pantera album, and easily one of my favorite albums as a teenager. Pantera solidified my love for metal music, this is like listening to history for me.

Now we're talkin'! This is an album that takes me right back to high school when I would listen to it constantly. One of the bands that first drew me into listening to heavy music. I spent endless hours trying to learn all of these riffs on guitar, and "Mouth for War" was the first drum track I transposed into MIDI for my drum machine, so this album taught me tons as an amateur musician. Over the years, the tone of the guitars and drums on this album have taken on a "ridiculous" sound in my ears, in that it's an extremely polished and over the top but dated sound, one that I don't think I'd enjoy on anyone else's material, but I just love it on these songs.

I know I've listened to this before, but I didn't remember it very well. Listening with fresh 2022 ears, I found a lot to like. The singles still hold up pretty well, although I probably could never hear Walk again and be ok. This Love is still good. I was most surprised by Fucking Hostile and Rise. Those are straight bangers and I enjoyed them a lot. It fell off a bit near the end, but not by a lot. I was still enjoying it. Too bad Anselmo is a shithead. 4/5

The songs here are solid. A New Level is groovy as fuck. Fucking Hostile is a thrashy rager. This Love is an eerie alt metal song, while Rise is another angry groovy banger with a great solo. The album does grow repetitive around the halfway point and the overly macho lyrics are a little cringe when you know who's singing them. But it's overall a fun, heavy album.

Pantera are one of the first metal bands I really fell for. I skipped past the nu metal scene, which was really fading out at that point, and went for Texas' finest after becoming acquainted with the classics, but just before discovering death metal. So I know this album pretty well. But at the same time, while my devotion for Sabbath and Maiden will never die, Pantera do little for me nowadays. Part of that comes from recognizing their problematic elements, primarily with racism. Anselmo is by far the guiltiest, but Dime and Vinnie did love the Confederate flag... And I'm southern, yet I have no defense for said love. Even before that, I just realized that the songwriting just isn't there. They're all fine musicians- I do have a lot of respect for Dime being a one-man guitar team and making the band sound just as full as your average twin attack in metal- but this all feels too juvenile to resonate for me beyond, like, 10th grade. I'll always go back to Beavis and Butthead's take down on the "This Love" video- "You treat your stepmother with respect, Pantera, or you'll be sleeping in the street." I laugh despite that track being a highlight for me. Cowboys would probably rate higher for me, but even when I was all aboard the Pantera train, I always found Vulgar a little overrated. Current grade would be a C-, but 15-year-old me would easily be in the B range.

-The scooped-mid guitar tone is abysmal -The tough-guy posturing is embarrassing for anyone older than 18 -Fucking Hostile sounds like they tried to write a Ride-era Metallica song but forgot the part where Metallica is good -Walk is goofy as hell and has been memed into oblivion at this point -Vulgar display of bad music

This is the most overrated Pantera record by a mile. Personally, I find this band peaked with their groovier stuff, specifically GST. Give me Exhorder’s Slaughter in the Vatican or The Law over this & CFH 10/10 times. Still, these dorks had considerable influence on extreme metal of so many varieties it’s ridic, and this album is a big reason why. Say what you will about Dime’s shit tone (something I think people should be aping more often), dude had a style and carved himself a guitar legend niche, I suppose by way of writing tons of killer and innovative riffs and solos. Similarly, Vinnie had his own style, but for me his party trick doesn’t come to fruition until later records. Not that he’s slacking here (IIRC everything he recorded is sound-replaced – I could be wrong – but it just works better for me in slower contexts), he’s got a super ear for drum hooks and really knows when to dial things back. Phil is serviceable at best, technically (a dumbass at best, otherwise), but is the perfect kind of meathead to pull together this fusion of hardcore and heavy metal that’d live on for decades. Rex played electric bass guitar in Pantera… (lol). Side A is loaded with the hits, though if I never hear “Walk” or “Fucking Hostile” in my life ever again, I’d be just fine. “A New Level” and “This Love” hold up fairly well. Side B is pretty uneven, but this is where you can hear ‘em lean into the stomp/groove shit they master on later records. “Rise” and “No Good” are laughably bunk, but “Live in a Hole” is neat, working this schticky classic rock call-and-response thing, keeping the leads front and center. “Regular People” also has some cool lead work, but that’s about it… The 1-2 conclusion of this album is killer, though. “By Demons Be Driven” is one of my faves from their discography – that blend of livewire leads and jackhammer kicks is the essence of Pantera – and “Hollow” is the kinda “Cemetery Gates” shit this band should’ve wrote five times more of (honestly, someone should blatantly rip this off, there’s an entire band idea sitting right here). 3.5/5

Heavy metal music is fine for me... but I cannot bear such voice... it exhausts my own throat simply on listening.

Perhaps not the best time to listen. Some really interesting chord progressions in the groovier bits, but the vocals somewhat distracted me from such goings on.

Hi- Mouth of War, A New Level, Walk, This Love, Regular People (Conceit) It's really easy to call it "SCREAMO" or "Cookie Monster Music" but those derogatory labels lack nuance, when Vulgar... is a masterpiece. The opening act with Mouth For War, A New Level, Walk, and *** Hostile all feature killer guitar riffs, but then you're hit with This Love, which is filled with melodic and masterful guitarwork. The rest of the album is more of the same but not really the same because each track is unique and executed with masterful precision in new ways. Hatebreed, Static-X, Mudvayne owe a lot to Pantera, as it's clear they've culled much of their sound from here.

Could listen to a instrumental version of this album much easier than this one with screaming. Glad I made it through the end. My ears need a break. Ouch.

The music is fantastic. Hard, of course, but surprisingly nuanced for metal. Slow bits and quiet bits make the hard bits harder. But I still can’t stand screamo vocals. I need to tune it out to get through the thing, which is not fair to the musicians present. Too bad.

Some heavy and cool riffs, but the overly clean production robs this album of any emotion for me. The vocals also seem weirdly disconnected from the music, like someone doing an impression of a metal singer over a karaoke backing track. 2/5.

Strong 4 stars. As Martin Popoff has said, “give me the money riff”. This album is filled with the slow grove metal money riffs that Pantera is famous for. Production does sound muffled though. And as a guitarist I do not care for dimebag-style shredding. It always sounds convoluted and out of place. Ballads also hold this album back (but shredding fits in much better there)

Das war (und ist!) truly Musik zum Eltern schockieren. Geiler Maschinengewehr-Metal! Diese Sattheit der Drums, ich könnte direkt jemanden verprügeln. Nutzt sich - für Nicht-Metal-Fans - auf Albumlänge bisschen ab/wird eintönig, aber trotzdem mit 3,4 knapp unter 4 Vollsternen raus. Fucking Hostile!

This kind of music is literal torture for me.

Solid hard core metal album. Walk is a classic that hits hard. The album has a good mix of hardcore lyrics and plenty of flowing guitar riffs. Always enjoyed when in the mood. 8.1/10

A brutal assault of an album, Pantera’s vulgar display of Power was exactly that. Building on Cowboy’s heavy guitar tone their follow up took things to a whole new level. Quite simply Pantera sounded like nobody else and with this album they took the crown of the heaviest metal band on the planet. Phil Anselmo’s unmistakable growling vocals and Dimebag’s incredible, truly unique guitar sound compliment each other perfectly - supported brilliantly by the pummelling rhythm section of Rex and Vinnie Paul. Mouth for War, Walk, Fucking Hostile, This Love, By Demons be Driven, Hollow are just a few of the highlights on this incredible album.

Bit too heavy for my tastes. Could do with a few more flourishes.

The first half of this album is unbelievable and relentless. Brutal, powerful, the riffs and guitar are just unreal and Anselmos vocals work perfectly. I always found myself spending less time with the music in the second half although that’s not to say it isn’t good - as close to a five as I can get but just misses out. Their finest moment

A very accessible and influential album in the realm of thrash metal. Created the genre groove metal and would inspire later 90s albums like nu metal (e.g. "No Good"). Incredibly coherent and easy flowing album with diversity here and there. You got catchy songs and loud mayhem songs. You got slow ballads and rapid playing. Some really amazing solos. All the tracks are good, but I felt the second half was somewhat lacking (except "Hollow"), although they had their great solos and gimmicks, like the sudden stops in "By Demons Be Driven." Tight, crunching riffs. Great 90s guitar production fork Terry Date. Could be the great lost metallica album (if they hadn't gone down the Black Album accessible route). Tends towards "all loud, all the time", with some exceptions with greater dynamic range, such as "this love". The Rollins-like yelling gets a bit wearing after a while.

I was dreading reviewing this album, but I'm pleasantly surprised. The thing that I was dreading the most was the dreadful barking and screaming that has come to characterize screamo, and no doubt, I'm sure that Pantera was deeply influential on extreme offshoots of heavy metal like Black Metal and Death Metal, but vocalist Phil Anselmo is actually singing rather than simply shrieking or grunting--there is a difference. I'm also pleasantly surprised by the competence of the musicians. The rhythm section is powerful, tight and can turn on a dime. And I really like how cleanly this has been recorded. Lead guitarist Dimebag is a superior technician, even if he doesn't have a whole lot new to say in terms of melodic lines. The riffage is equally influenced by Black Sabbath and 80s speed metal, but more complex than either. Basically, Pantera doesn't suck. If I appreciate this more than I like it, it's because my taste in 90s bands influenced by Black Sabbath runs more to Alice In Chains and Soundgarden. Not that those are technically better bands than Pantera. On the contrary. It's just that the point of Pantera seems to be to pummel the listener or perhaps to accompany literal head banging against a wall. Basically, Pantera Vulgar Display of Power registers as a wall of undifferentiated rage, whereas the albums of Alice In Chains and Soundgarden feature distinctive songs that make you feel different things while not neglecting riffage or powerful emotions. Those bands are more nuanced. That said, considering what Pantera is going for, it's hard to imagine how you would improve on Vulgar Display of Power.

Alright. Seems to have been groundbreaking at the time. Over the course of the album I went from "Hell yeah" to "meh" so either it got old fast or the best songs were also the first.

I wanted to like this more than I did since these guys throw down some crunchy grooves on the tracks, but my problem with this album is that most every song is pretty simple sounding so in the end it all just devolves into indistinguishable background noise.

I never really got into Pantera when I was younger, or most metal for that matter. However, there is just something about this album that I think I would have really liked if I had given it more of a chance when I was younger. Just the tone on the guitar is great; it resonates somewhere deep inside your skull. I'm not in love with the lyrical portion of it, but that's generally true of this type of metal for me. 4/5, but I might be talked into 5/5 on repeated listenings

Not into metal but this really surprised me. Some class punchy guitar playing and less screamy than some heavier forms of metal. Not as bad as I expected it. Good job for what it is.

Seminal thrash metal album from the 90s. Very rarely does a band's non-musical story surpass the musical one, but man-o-man does Pantera have a hell of a story as a band. Their contribution to metal can be told through this album.

Absolute classic! Banger through and through. Ranges from some very fast and "brutal" songs to some slower more relaxing but still groovy songs.

I think it’s funny that there’s typically little to no overlap between fans of rap and fans of heavy metal. Both feature mostly spoken/shouted vocals, sick beats, and percussive instrumentation from non-percussion instruments. In Pantera’s case, the crunchy guitar acts like a second drum kit driving the rhythm. Lead singer is not really singing, exactly… but it’s not necessary that he do so in order to get the point across. I’m sorta meh about this. It’s kinda boring, IMO… even though I should be energized by the RAWKK!!!!1!! I guess because I’ve heard it all a hundred times, done in more interesting ways. But I should give credit where it’s due; some of my favorite bands wouldn’t exist without the influence of early metal bands like Pantera. I was barely sentient in ‘92, but there can’t have been many bands like this before then. Credit for defining the genre, but I don’t love it.

Definitely won’t be for everyone. Can get very ‘samey’ but I can see how some people would love it! Didn’t love it, didn’t hate it. Probably not going to return to it anytime soon, but I also wouldn’t be furious if someone wanted to listen to some Pantera now so y’know…there’s that!

Not typically my cup of tea but I am definitely keeping it in mind for a challenging workout day next time around.

Metal isn't for me

Pantera must be one of the pioneers of the cookie monster vocals and for that alone they should be excoriated if not tarred and feathered. I'll throw a slight amount of credit their way due to technical dexterity and a few listenable solos. Again it should be obvious this isn't my bag and as such take into account as I find the vocals comical at best and generally horrific and the so-called songwriting non-existent outside the poor man's Maiden lifting of the intro to Hollow. A generous 2 from me since this doesn't seem to be a genre to easily grow into, even for one who grew up on hard rock. Where are the songs?

Classic metal record that you can't go wrong with.

Pantera played some of the best gigs I ever went to. As much as Anselmo is a total asshole, these guys rock so hard I can ignore that a while. Love the band, love the album, it makes me want to get up and get aggressive, or dance manically, or both. One of my favourite albums from my favourite time period for music.

Maybe it caught me on a particularly angsty morning but this was more enjoyable than I assumed. Almost earned a 4 but some of the slower, quieter songs are actually what lost me.

I listen to metal so infrequently that I struggle to tell good metal from bad metal. My enjoyment of the guitar in some tracks is pretty speedily quashed by someone screaming 'FUCKING HOSTILE' in my ear. This album doesn't really do it for me, but I wouldn't call it 'bad'. Favourite track was probably 'Regular People'. I'd split the difference between a 1 and a 2

I will never be able to give an objective review of musicianship within this genre due to my pure distain for it. Resting heart rate 103bpm. Praying the next album will be less panic attack inducing.

Love the heavy riffs, and grungy vocals. This music digs through your outer layer and vibrates the marrow. Either exhilarating or horrific - I love it. Some great songs - especially “Mouth for War” and “Walk”. Also props for the quintessential Metal song title “Fucking Hostile”. Solid 4

Lets go! One of my favorite metal songs, Walk, graces this album as I am treated to all the other songs Pantera has to offer. Another case of, I'll listen to them eventually. The time is finally here and I am enjoying what I hear! I may have to give it a second listen to find some gems, but Rise is sticking out and F****** Hostile was wild. I wonder if they were the first to get an F on an album track. I wouldn't be surprised if Slipknot got some of their influences here with the singers lower voiced moments that shift to screams. This can especially be heard on No Good (which I am liking as well). Love the album cover, too. That is me when I was first introduced to metal music and my life was change forever.

Trash metal, con cierto interés pero esa voz es intragable

Essential album in the evolution of Thrash metal as it grew out of its 80's infancy and continued to spread in the 90's. Anselmo's vocal style over groovy grind riffs are also clear inspiration for Nu-Metal bands that sprang up in the late 90's/early 00's. It's a shame Dimebag was murdered by a whacko, and Phil Anselmo has turned into a real piece of human garbage since the band's dissolution. Big stain on the reputation of a hugely influential band.

Do I actually like metal now, or do we just keep getting really good metal albums? This is definitely closer to the thrash and death metal stuff that I'm not into, but there are some serious bangers on this album. Of course I know "Walk," but it might not even be my favorite track. The vocals are less clear than the other metal bands we've had (Sabbath, SOAD, Iron Maiden), but the instrumentals are very crisp. Some fantastic, heavy guitar work. I like this a lot. Favorite tracks: This Love, Walk, F*****g Hostile, By Demons Driven. Album art: Super DIY. The text blocks are great. Could work as a punk album cover too. This man's neck will never be the same. 4/5

Never listened to Pantera before. Was a fun listen, sort of disjointed across styles of metal though. Not mad about hearing it

Absoluter BÄNGÄ. Geil Rotzige Riffs, dreckiger sound und schön sauer der Dude. Ich finds großartig. klingt bissi wie Metallica phasenweise. Insgesamt machts schon Bock zu hören, aber nichts was ich in meine Musiksammlung aufnehmen würde, like actually buy it . Aber weils ne erfrischende Abwechslung war 4*

Alles klar, sprach ich gestern noch von weirdem Metal, so werde ich heute damit belohnt. Typisch schlecht gemischt, aber vielleicht macht das auch den Reiz aus. Funfact, nach diesem Album haben Pantera nie wieder Demo-Versionen aufgenommen, sondern oft improvisiert. Es tut mir weh, es tut mir gut. Pantera hat hierbei laut Wikipedia versucht, das härteste Album aller Zeiten aufzunehmen, weil das Black Album von Metallica für sie eine Enttäuschung war. Nun gut. "Walk" liebe ich. Stehe gerade auf der Rofatanze irgendwann um viertel nach vier und lasse mich davon treiben. Viel Bewegung ist nicht mehr, es sind nur noch die harten Metalboys da und lassen ihre Haare schwingen. Ich habe keine Haare und Leute, die ohne Haare bangen, sind für mich Abschaum. Also putze ich weiter die Tische und Bänke, um früher in den Feierabend zu kommen. Währenddessen singe ich leise mit und bewege das Zewatuch im Takt. Es ist perfekt. "This Love" ist auch eine fiese Möpp! Kommt so romantisch daher und bläst im Refrain das Trommelfell weg. Wo sind meine Mosherfriends? Hoch mit den Beinen, ich will Zähne fliegen sehen. Jemand den geilen Song "Piss" in der Remastered-Version von 2012 gehört? "Hollow" auch nicht mehr auf dem Schirm gehabt. Finde alles gut an diesem Album, vielleicht zu wenig gehört in meinem Leben. Werde es nun fester in meine Routine einbinden.

Erinnert mich daran wie wir in Stefans küche 3kg Hack zu Fleichküchle gemacht haben und Stefan dann mit nem Weizen auf der Plauze eingeschlafen ist. Das ist natürlich umgefallen und alles war versifft. Er wollte erst nicht glauben, dass er sich dieses Schlamassel selbst zuschreiben muss. Und Dimebag auf der Bühne erschossen worden: Mehr Meddl geht nicht

Hated it. Gave up after 2 songs

A lot of firsts on this list. this was my first full listen through of a Pantera album, and i gotta say, it was fucking good! some songs i've heard before, but i was damn well hooked by this album. the composition was well planned, music was great, and overall it was a great listen.

Good metal album. Has moments where you want to sing along.

‘a new level’ was great. I’m a sucker for some good guitar. some songs like ‘this love’ didn’t sound right to me with the different ranges of style combined between metal and slow grunge-rock, woulda been better off without the shouting on that one. the first half of the album was better. 3.5 -> 4 doesn’t seem right ?

Mediocre Metal

The worst

I liked the song Hollow. As the long intro is more melodic. The last part of the song is more hard metal or what name you want to give it.

Fat fkn riffs. The way they manipulate the tempo is sick. Walk, This Love and Live in a Hole are my highlights.

Another classic. The raw Pantera energy is hard to match by bands even today, and the crunchy guitar tone is to die for.
