anger
Mediocre Metal
I liked the song Hollow. As the long intro is more melodic. The last part of the song is more hard metal or what name you want to give it.
Heavy metal, like the kind of jams that would play at Kuma’s. I respect the genre, but I could never listen to it every day
when i channel my hate to productive, i dont find it hard to impress lol but sorry not for me, i said ill skim this and call it a day just a few seconds in you verbal masturbate??? actually the lyrics aint that bad and these are the kinds of songs na i can only listen to when i need to headbang (which is almost never hahahaha) ok finally, do we have a peaceful song [this love] ok at least it lasted 2:31 hahahaha
Calma.

Maybe 101 but definitely not 1001.
Demasiado pesado y oscuro
Non non non par pitié
No need to listen, 1/5
Not really my genre
- Welp, there goes my plans for a chill morning of music - I don’t think I’ll ever like heavy metal. Like it just all sounds so jarring - Hollow is the only good song here
I struggled to get through this. Almost migraine inducing. I keep trying metal with this list, and I’m keeping an open mind but haven’t found a metal album I like.
I could say something vulgar about Philip Anselmo but I will refrain (unlike him). But 1 star is being generous but it's as low as I can go
Sounds to which you can sharpen tools.
I’ve wanted to listen to more Pantera for a while now, so I was excited. Their songs are so groovy tbh. Fav song is ‘Walk’.
Not remotely interested in this music.
This is a garbage album from a garbage genre. I did listen to it, and I remember it. It sounds more like a celebration of violence rather than an objection to it. My reaction then, and now, is why so pissed off? You grew up in the USA, steeped in white prvilege - maybe get angry for those who weren't.
I love getting these awful metal bands. No thought required, one pentagram.
Not as bad as other metal albums I needed to listen to, but this is just not my music at all
Guantanamo Bay detention camp probably use this to keep the inmates awake at night. I like metal, noise, sludge etc. but I've got very little patience for this crap. Just more spotty teenager hormone overload shite. And the lyrics are there to prove it. Is there a 0 on this site?
Awful noise
Jesus Christ no!
If I could listen without vocals, I’d enjoy the rock music
Not for me
An assault to my ears. May I suggest a throat lozenge and some therapy?
When this album popped up I thought "fuck. I have to listen to Slayer: I really don't fuck with "brother metal". The culture, the confederate flags, the general racism. It just radiates through the music. Not my vibe.
That's going to be a no from me, dawg
As solid a 1 as you’ll ever find. The only “song” was the de rigueur slow waltz that wraps the album. The rest is just paint by numbers shouty noise.
Not for me
not my thing
This was brutal
Not quite as bad as expected but close. Vocals were quite annoying. 1.5 rounded down.
🤷🏿♀️ you do you
Since I didn't listen to Pantera as a pre-teen, there's absolutely no point in starting now. This album makes 52 minutes and 52 seconds feel like a very very long time. It can't get much worse than this!
Was honestly very difficult to get through and truly not my kind of music in any way, shape, or form. I can somewhat respect the artistry here but even then it’s hard to get what is going on. Metal and this style of singing is done very well here but is not easy to get through or listen to.
I found it boring
I listened to the first 30 seconds. That's all I needed.
Can't stand this type of music
Nope. I dnt know how they expect normal people to want to listen to it with a cover like that
Sorry Frank, I just can't handle this
Couldn't do it.
They sound very cross .....
Just noise
Not a big fan... or a fan at all really. Hard for me to listen to.
I’m retired so I get to spend my mornings read the news, drinking my coffee, petting my cat. It’s a gentle calming experience that allows me to begin my day of peace and joy. Then I played Pantera. I immediately wanted to slit the throat to the next person that walked in my door.
Some of the more down tempo tracks I enjoyed but the rest of the album wasn't for new.
I don’t even want to know what this is going to do to my Apple Music algorithm 😭
This has to be the straightest, most macho album on the entire list. And that is saying something, considering the amount of hip-hop on it. But this is a particular kind of machismo, the knucklehead, 'no thoughts, head empty' kind. For a gay boy like me, there is a strange allure to it, but only for the fantasy, as it is not worth it engaging with this type directly. And as for their music. It is not worth it even for fantasy. Key tracks: Walk
Didn’t listen - not my thing.
I couldn’t stand this so I skipped through most of it, only sampling a little bit of each song…I quickly got the point. What a waste of five minutes. It is aptly titled, however. I hated this…one star.
Shiite!
I really doing understand the appeal of this genre.
Epic guitars but.....
Really tried but only listened to first 2 songs. Sounds like all other thrash metal to me
Not for me. 1/5
… Thanks for the times that you've given me The memories are all in my mind And now that we've come to the end of our rainbow There's something I must say out loud … You're once, twice, three times a lady And I love you Yes, you're once, twice, three times a lady And I love you I love you
This is not music. The vocals sound like my babies when they couldn’t get out of their cribs.
I don't care how many of my "friends" cherished this album in highschool. Most of them are now in prison or paying separate child supports with their hourly job. I won't idolize a known racist scumbag named, *checks notes* dimebag darrell. I like to separate the art and the artist, but the art is literally the same. I have more respect for the Beretta 92FS. So much better metal out there.
Way too aggressive.
Unlistenable music for incels.
Absolute rubbish. Yelling and that weird drum sound that Metallica started in the late 80s. Unlistenable.
Not good, not enjoyable, just sloppy mush
I couldn't even finish this album, skipping through the last three songs. Having no nostalgia for it certainly doesn't help. It's more boring than anything else. A little too much edge, not enough actually interesting ideas.
The music was fine but that voice! Argh. Go away.
Oh...metal chug chug. One rung above the Kars 4 Kids song among stuff I truly hate.
Mä en vaan kertakaikkiaan saa kiinni tämmösestä musasta. Vihaan oikeastaan ihan kaikkea mitä tässä on. Raastavan kuuloista karjumislaulantaa, säksättäviä sahakitaroita, ärsyttäviä rumpukomppeja... Kuuntelin kuulokkeilla aamun juoksulenkin yhteydessä, ajattelin että jos olisi saanut vähän virtaa lenkkiin, mutta oikeastaan ihan puhtaasti vaan vitutti kuunnella tätä.
Nah.
So do go go Gucci do Denise do do do do
Metal is one of the genres I really don't like and this album wasn't an exception. It's aggresssive, angry, hateful, and tedious. Sure, they are technical and can play their instruments but that's not enough for me to like an album.
This is the kind of metal I just don't vibe with. There's just something about the lyrics in this sub-genre... "A new level of competence and power" for example. Hearing that very over dramatic, shout-y over enunciated way he says "comp-e-tens-ah" is just, well, cringe--there's no better word for it.
I almost always listen all the way through, but I turned this off after No Good (Attack the Radical). Maybe one of the last four songs is good. I'll never know, this was just so monotonous and boring.
1.5
Not for me that
To quote Lisa Rinna, "ooh, you're so angry." Fuck Phil Anselmo and all the other shitty racists out there.
Music to stunt your growth. Best played while planning a school shooting. Hate has a home here. 🇺🇸
I can’t stand this guys voice.
I've never gotten the hang of thrash metal. It's really not my thing. There were some pleasant enough moments in there, and I'm sure that, as Wikipedia claims, all the band members are amongst the greatest at their positions that have played in the wider metal journal. Err {{debatable}}, but there you go. So, I got through it but didn't particularly enjoy it. Musically it probably deserves two stars, but the frontman is an obvious cunt, so it gets one
Fuck this shit. Growling and lots of metal are just not musicially interesting and Pantera's album is no exception. Yeah, you might be a cool guy when you're 16, but that's about it. I can tolerate some prog metal, but this is not it.
Hard rock/metal, to heavy for me
I didn’t even like Pantera when I was 14, so there wasn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that I’d actually get ‘em now. For me, they’re not only “Mega Bloks” Megadeth, but maybe one of the better examples of a “discount” version. Pantera is angry without shit to say, loud but not interesting. In “This Love” they attempt to show their range, but it ended up being the worst song I’ve heard from this list so far. A teen with a guitar, 5 minutes of practice, and a Boss Metal Zone ™️ pedal can play any of these songs nearly as well as the recording. I mean, that riff from Walk is literally 0-0-1-0-0 on the low E. Dimebag’s unwieldy, signature guitars are an extension of Pantera’s fierce-but-dumb vibes, with iconic finishes including: - lightning bolt! - confederate flag! - camo! - flames! - other aesthetics you’d see on a t-shirt for sale at a gas station in Alabama
Taught when we're young to hate one another It's time to have a new reign of power Make pride universal so no one gives in Turn our backs on those who oppose Then when confronted, we ask them the question: What's wrong with their mind? What's wrong with your mind? I really don't listen to metal as a rule; it feels like it's just screaming at me. In trying to be diligent to the process, I did read the lyrics for the songs. The album title and the song title words feel so relevant with politics/policies today, but the lyrics didn't reflect what I hoped for in the titles in some instances. So I listened, afraid my ears would be bleeding by the time the album ended. Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite tracks? None 1 star. Didn't like it but I don't enjoy metal in general.
I hate scream-singing. This was awful. Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): N/A ⭐: Hated it.
I was only vaguely aware of Pantera in the nineties, and I don't remember learning much about them until maybe a year or two before Dimebag Darrell was murdered. Oddly enough though, I lived in Arlington until I was about eight years old, and had I stayed in the same house and not moved to Houston, I would have gone to Dimebag Darrell's alma mater, Arlington High School. I only know a couple of Pantera songs, one of them being "Walk," which is on this album. I associate "Walk" with the boot-licking 'Blue Lives Matter' crowd, so it's fair to say that I already have a negative view of this album. I'm really not looking forward to listening to this, and even though I try to be objective about most of the things I review, I'm willing to throw that out the window today. Time to throw on a Punisher logo shirt and get down and dirty with the boys! After a somewhat promising opening track, Vulgar Display of Power fell apart pretty quickly for me. When "Mouth for War" kicked off, I thought I would have a decent time with this album. The guitars and drums were driving, and I could feel myself begrudgingly getting into this album. But "A New Level" didn't do much for me, and even though "Walk" wound up being one of the better songs on the album, it didn't do much for me either. I felt like I was just trudging through an hour's worth of the same growling, the same throbbing drum beats, and the same guitar chord structures. There just wasn't anything on this album for me to latch on to. Back to "Walk" though. As annoying as I find this song, I like its structure, and the vocals are kinda catchy to yell along to. The best song on the album though was the closing track, "Hollow." I thought this was the only song on the album that had some emotional depth to it, and I liked that it actually had some guitar playing that wasn't power chords and some vocals that weren't yelled. Pantera can clearly do more than just the same thing over and over again, so why didn't they show more range on this album? I guess this sort of thing just isn't for me.
nope
Boring
vulgar display of one star
Boring stadium metal voice strikes again, rubbish.
who knew they could make a boring metal album
this band sucks.
Wow, I was done with that quickly. I listened to two tracks, then I'd had enough. Wild, melody-free roaring. In my narrow-minded little world, I thought music had something to do with melody. On the other hand, neither the term melody nor music is precisely defined. So what do I know? At least I know that I don't want to waste my time with this noise. 1/5
Tried to listen to all but eh. Pantera has been around forever and any time i caught them it was "It has all the elements I like - but I just don't." Something about the harsh sound of both guitar and voice combined is graty on the nerves. Song 3 'Hollow' was okay - but not representative of their work as a whole. On my patented -100 to +100 rating scale where ripping open that box to find the product inside is misrepresented by the photo on the box is a -30 this is -50.
Not my thing
Nope. I think this probably influenced a whole gaggle of imitators, because this sound was everywhere in the late 1990s. But even in its original form (?) it’s annoying, & boring. I just don’t want to hear a guy vomit angry lyrics onto the microphone for a hal hour. The drumming is intense, but not artful. The guitar playing — stock. I don’t need to hear this again, though I’m sure I will. I’ll be aggravated when that happens…
I feel like you had to have been there or grown up with it

Sweet Christ alive. What a turgid, stodgy, wedge of execrable dross. How did it get on the list? How did it even get made? Can I be put in charge of this list please? No one should ever have to listen to this rubbish.
As a younger man I referred to this macho posturing as Pantliner. I shall continue to refer to this macho posturing as Pantliner.
Awful
No
This is the type of music serial killers listen to when they're psyching themselves up for their next kill.
Vulgar Display of Power is basically nonstop shouting and growling with zero melody, and honestly, it’s just not my thing at all
Fuck Phil Anselmo and every limp dick Nazi asshole like Phil Anselmo.
Not my style 1/5
Loud. Raucous. Unintelligible. Probably important in the history of metal and mosh pits but that doesn’t make for compelling listening.
Just not the day for this, but then I can’t really think of a day for it. Some like this, some don’t. Some say intense, I just find it very tedious, very very tedious. Can’t be bothered wasting anymore time on this, heard it, 1 Star
Vulgar display of noise
This belongs on a list of 1001 albums to listen if you want to die
Vulgar
The greatest sense of relief when it ended
I must confess that this one kind of bored me. I wish I had more commentary on what specifically I didn't like, other than that I thought it was plodding and repetitive. Nothing interesting really going on here in terms of song structure; I'm told that these guys are more rhythm-oriented which, in theory, should appeal to me, but nothing here really piqued my interest.
A new low.
Not a fan of this era of metal. If I could give zero stars, I would. I got 3/4 of the way through before throwing in the towel. Genuinely, one of the worst albums I’ve heard.
I tried. But Pantera won.
Way too much brutal energy and shouting for me. Couldn’t get through it. Not my thing.
After having Iron Maiden earlier this week, this was a definite downgrade. Pretty fucking terrible, to be honest.
I get it that are quite the inspiration in the metal world, but just not my jam
Nah.
If it makes you happy It can't be that bad If it makes you happy Then why the hell are you so sad?
A good example of my gripe with metal. Some of the songs had fun instrumentation but the vocals were annoying as hell (if you can call screaming vocals).
Nur Gebrülle!
If you want white supremacist political opinions from metal artists go listen to Burzum, the music is much better. (This is satire, from a liberal leftie) x
Not for me Clive. I tried, I really did, apparently Walk is the essential song on this. I won't be revisiting.
Leider habe ich dafür überhaupt nichts übrig... Zu laut, zu dumpf, zu breitbeinig. 1/5
Negative. Not for me.
Don't be silly. For incels and 13 year old boys only.
Ts is not tuff vro 🥀
the title says it all
Vulgar Display of Power is a chaotic mess that’s definitely not my type of music. Even if it were, the vocals and drums feel weak, and most of it just sounds like noise to me. My ears still feel violated.
I got this album served to me on a Monday, and I've put off listening to it all week. Decided to just get it over with, and I hate it just as much as I expected. I don't like metal, I don't like screaming, it's all just too much and overwhelming. It's not enjoyable, and my ratings are purely based on my own personal listenability. This is literally not fun. I don't even want to give this a repeat listen, like I did with my other 1-star hard rock album. It's just a no for me, I got through it, and never need to again. I DID listen front to back though. I’ll give every album an honest listen.
I find it so funny that the cliched sound in this scene involved such HUGE guitar sounds but such wet-cardboard drum sounds. And the demon-affectation of those vocals are not something I want or need to hear. Guitars + 4 stars Drums - 1 star Vocals - 2 stars
Nope not for me
Ha, ha....no.
who unironically listens to sweaty angry men screaming
Not my genre in the first place but I couldn't really find any enjoyable tracks on the album outside of Walk. Definitely too much growling for me, although I'd happily play the album if I was ever in a rage room smashing things to bits. 1.5/5
Hard metal isn’t my thing these days. They’re good even though it sounds like a Metallica ripoff to me. Punishing guitars and drums, leavened by some more melodic interludes and lyrics about love and loss. Still, the unrelenting ragged growl of the frontman’s voice is too much, tips it into too aggressive and ugly for me now. It’s a 1 not based on artistic merit but to indicate that’s it’s not for me.
Interesting riffs, a lot of annoyingly screamy vocals, the tempo of the whole album making it energetic. Metal.
i can't do this anymore
"Pantera" is music I can't relate to at all. Aggressive guitars, aggressive screaming, aggressive drums, etc., topped off with an aggressive cover. I'm assuming the lyrics aren't about loving your fellow human beings or flowers. I'm sorry, but I absolutely don't need that.
It's all yelling.
No This is one of the newer metal bands I've heard from this list. I don't like metal in general, and I really didn't like this. I prefer the older stuff if I HAVE to listen to metal. Somebody please tell me what is appealing about this genre? About the ridiculous singing voices? About the repetitive nature of the drum parts? Even the guitar parts? What's fun about all the songs always being at the same energy level and rarely dropping? I don't get it and I never will. I have a rule that, unless I really hate an album, it has to get at least two stars because it's still a piece of art that someone worked really hard on, and I can appreciate it for that alone. I can appreciate the craftsmanship, the technical achievements, and production and see that it deserves two stars at a minimum. But I hated this so it gets one star. Not sorry. Standout Track: Mouth for War
One of the reviews for this album called it “punishing.” Another called it “tedious.” Add in loud and you’ve got my summary. Also, WTF was the ballad at the end? 1⭐️
It`s not my thing!
1/5 not melodic enough to overcome the screaming
I'm not going to deny that when I started out I listened to a metric fuckton of Pantera, but eventually I realized how overrated it is and what a subhuman waste of skin Phil Anselmo is. Racist band for wife beaters and rednecks.
I didn't think I was a metal fan, now I KNOW I'm not a metal fan. Guitar is fine, but vocals are horrendous.
Angry heavy metal
1/10…groove-trash metal
So listen, I know this is somebody's jam... but it's not mine. This is probably better discovered at around 17, rather than the 51 I am.
go girl give us nothing.
zero
I dont think I have ever listened to Pantera... strap in... here we go! Ahh, its the shouty gutteral kind of metal for angsty people. No wonder I have never listened to it.
Absolutely no chance
Why does anyone listen to this crap? How did this album make the list of the greatest 1001 albums of all time--what album did it knock out? Every song sounds exactly the same, except part of the last one. Somewhere the members of this band are wasting away in Margaritaville right now, flabbergasted that they got rich out of churning out this noise.
what the fuckkkkkk
I can appreciate the music but I hate the singing so much. Not for me.
Not my thing. The songs are boring, mixing is too bass heavy. I don’t understand the point of those super mid-cut guitars. It’s supposed to sound heavy and “powerful,” but it just makes everything sound flabby. Drums sound like toys. It’s the irony of our time that heavy metal tends to be the lamest, doinkiest shit.
Just not into it
More like trash metal, am I right?
Not for me
Nah, aint no metal kid.
Not a fan of being screamed at for an hour.
muito barulhento, 1,5
Utter crap
1/5
I just do not like Metal. And whilst this I found this slightly more enjoyable than other metal albums as not quite so lyrically dumbits still a 1 for me. Top of the shit pile but unfortunately still shit.
A new level of fucking hostility that is not love, for me.
Fuck sake.
Proficient guitar playing but the only way I could tolerate this was by imagining I was torturing my sadistic directors with it Edit: quite like the ballady ones if I picture Mike Patton singing them
Awful. It doesn’t even sound that heavy to me. It sounds thin and trebly with hardly any bass. The production is so smooth and polished that it lacks any edge. They should try listening to SWANS or My Bloody Valentine. I hate the guitar sound, hate the drum sound and hate the vocals. One point for the guitar solos that I do actually quite like.
Not for me.
2/10. Not my thing at all.
Boring. Didn’t find any songs even kind of good.
Noisy crap
You might not be able to judge a book by its cover, but you certainly can with this album.
Not my thing.
Volume - 1 Interest - 0 Vulgar Display of Bleagh!
Not my bag, certainly, but is this even good? They use the same guitar tone on every single song. Whatever. I don’t get it nor am I sad about it
What the hell? I guess I live in a hole with regular people. I've certainly got no mouth for war and find this sound fucking hostile and hollow. It is simply no good.
Pantera gonna do what Pantera gonna do. True to the album name, it is in fact a vulgar display of power. I don't understand the motivation to make music like this, but I know it has appeal with disaffected humans whose mothers didn't love or protect them (see: "Got shit on, pissed on, spit on, stepped on"). Screaming guitars, pounding drums, and growling lyrics with none of the charm of say a White Zombie. The album is sort of like getting stabbed repeatedly with a fork.
I preferred when a band needed cool songs to make it cool or not. Now you just have to put on a voice, say fuck every line and wear black and bahm you're cool, easy as that.
Musically I'm here for it. Vocals just not for me
Boring as sin
Made it just over half way through but couldn't take any more. This is not to my taste at all. I hate the vocals especially.
There have been albums with one good track. This album is one track. I suspect it has just one chord.
Nope. Worse than Nine Inch Nails.
We don’t need this fascist groove thang.
Oh come on. Seriously? What a load of shite. What is that silly singing? The lyrics sound like a teenager trying to big himself up because he's so insecure and spotty. The guitar is relentlessly samey. The drums are so intricate and fast - yet tappy-tappy in the production. Oh boy. Laughable.
Det går inte lyssna färdigt på detta. Det är så jävla dåligt.
Just not my style
Good for not falling asleep on the train when I didn’t want to, not good for lyricism
I think that I like metal and not heavy metal, this was too much yelling for me
After 20 years of giving Metal a shot, I think it's just not gonna click for me. Sorry, Ethan. I like the vibes, but hate the sounds. Metallica abandoned their thrash metal sound for a more commercially accessible one their self-titled album in 1991, one that I enjoy as far as hard rock goes. Pantera viewed this as a disappointment and an opportunity to fill a gap and produce this record. I understand that there is a distinct subculture to which this is a good thing, but not to my ears.
Horrible.
This isn't really helping me enjoy metal more, especially not thrash metal.
Never got Pantera.
Awful, I did give it my best go though!!
I can repeat my last review about RAP...
Get fucked Pantera
Yeah fuck this. I don’t want my listening dollars to go towards this band fronted by a white supremacist Nazi shit head. Pantera died with Dimebag and that’s where it can stay
Not really my thing at all
Music for 12 year old white boys who’s mom is a real “bitch” for making him do his homework.
Non merci.
Unlistenably horrid.
Me niego a escuchar más. He llegado a Fucking Hostile.
Dog shit
Dog shit
This album is the reason I harbour so much skepticism towards metal as a genre. The tough-guy basic as fuck vocals and lyrics irritated me to no end. The rhythm of the album barely changes from that chugga chugga style, and at 52 minutes, it feels seriously slow. If anything, it made me appreciate the Iron Maiden album I had prior to this far more.It has nothing in particular to say, and even then, it says it badly. 04/06/24
By choice, I don't listen to explicit content. 0/5
Too aggressive and screamy for my taste. Not something I enjoy listening to at all. There is decent musical cohesion and okay instrumental performances, which almost make it a 2, but the lyrics seem almost like a parody of metal, and the rhytms are really quite simple and repetitive, making it feel tedious. So this ends up as a 1.
Sorry, y’all. I just don’t know how anyone takes this music (or at least these vocals) seriously. 1.5/5
DNF not for me. Two songs in an I had anxiety.
It's a "no" for me, guys. I'm sure someone appreciates this music and I'm just not big enough into thrash metal to enjoy this album. The best song on the album is "Fucking Hostile" because that's what making me listen to this album ever again would be described as.
Listened. Ears feel bashed. Words just slurried around like a bad concrete experience, all gravel and debris. Swearing, thrashing, guttural throat wounds shouting into my ear. Again, this is not my thing. No wish to repeat.
I really don’t like metal
a quiet rainy day inside with hot cocoas was, in retrospect, probably not the appropriate environment to be judging this one, but ah well
Headbanger Honeymoon. Real crap
Not my kind of music, to be honest, but let's give it a chance. No, I did not care for that. 1/5
Too heavy for me. Loud pounding guitar and screaming vocals. Not my cup of tea thank you
No es mi rollo
I do my best to listen to everything thrown out me on this project, but some of these genre's push the limits of actual music. Vocals are unbearable. Had to move on quickly from this one.
Nothing much for me here, a white power version of Slayer. Sorry no.

From the first note, it’s obvious that this ruined hard rock for the next 25 years at least. The sound of butt rock, but with more precision, but it doesn’t make me love it. It’s just heavy chugs, and yet not slow enough to give a beat down vibe. It just sounds like the music of a Gen X alcoholic plays in his garage while he lifts weights, annoyed that he doesn’t have a six pack but happy his arms make him look like he could punch a bouncer for kicking him out after he hits on a group of 19 year olds. There are brief glimpses of a more speed/thrash sound that I enjoy a lot more, but they feel more tacked on than sincere. Makes sense, since Pantera themselves said they saw this album as an opportunity to “fill a void” created by Metallica post-Black Album. Also I hate these solos. They take the worst lessons from Van Halen and exaggerate them beyond comprehension. Like it’s worse then Slayer, and that’s saying a lot. I swear I really love metal, I love punk, I love thrash and groove, I love all the subgenres this is pulling from. I just don’t think Pantera is for me; it’s so obvious their influence was brief and bright, and while that’s important to include in a book like this, it doesn’t mean the album holds up with time.
I am not angry enough at the world to have enjoyed this.
No
If you've ever wondered how it would sound if literally every song on an album was screamed instead of sung, you now have the answer. Is it good? Not really.
too much shuting. not my taste
Meh. Kinda boring, really. The album sounds like it was made by a bunch of conservative small dick racist texas good ole boys, which is pretty close to accurate. The only reason to include it would be to illustrate how bad metal can be. 1/5
Head banging, heavy metal
No
Blaireaux.
Greatly dislike the screaming vocals. Tried to listen to the entire album in full but had to skip through most tracks after bearing through about 40 seconds of each number.
Nope..
not for me
Deeply and probably deliberately unpleasant. Get out of my ears!
Negative stars are needed to accurately rate an absolute steaming pile of dogshit like this.
heavy
No desire. We are too old to enjoy that screaming😫
Um.. no thanks. Never caught on to the incessant screaming at the top of ones lungs - maybe to drown out the lack of creativity?
Oh, I know this one! There was a time when I thought this was scary, then I went through a metal phase and thought it was pretty good, and now I recognize Pantera as a band with a tragic history and a problematic singer and a sound that is very much of its era
Thrash metal isn't my thing. Nothing good ro say about this album 1
Definitely had to FF through this one. I would venture to guess based on most of the 5-star reviews that if you were not a teenager in high school (especially if you dabbled in substances) when this came out, you “missed the boat.” Not one thing I could grab onto, though I tried.
Nope.
Fuck this neo-nazi adjacent shit. Everyone who likes this album is an asshole.
Just no
The glam metal thing didn't work out for them so they decided to get all hard instead? I mean I guess they succeeded, but at what cost? I'll tell you what cost: nu-metal.
Unlike the Anthrax album I did make it all the way through this one. Don’t know why though. Awful.
1/10, not for me - too much screaming
Can't stand it when vocalists sing like Cookie Monster. Music was a bit interesting, but the vocals kill it for me.
Oh they wanna be a hardcore punk band sooooo bad! There's a lot of metal with better riffs, better lyrics and better vocals then this. Oh well, at least the title is accurate.
Not interested
1 i hate metal. the guitar solos are the only redeemable thing about this album but even then they're just meh. the "singing" is so annoying though god if they'd just toned it down a lil on the screaming i could have added at least one extra star. fave songs: ://
Not at all
My knee-jerk reaction when I saw Pantera crop up: "Ugh." But I had the same reaction when Megadeth's "Rust in Peace" appeared, only to be pleasantly surprised by it. Maybe this would be a similar experience. The first track on the album is "Mouth for War," and I was once again pleasantly surprised. Solid drums, great guitar ... maybe I'll like this after all. Aaaaand then Anselmo's vocals kicked in and my fleeting optimism was bashed into a thousand pieces. I just can't listen to this kind of stuff. It's just yelling. Or growling. Or both. But if you were to ask me what I thought incels, school shooters, and white supremacists listened to, this would be it. I'm not implying the band (or the majority of their fans) share those views, but this just sounds like toxic masculinity in musical form. I can't even think when shit like this is playing. It's way too aggro, which is a shame, because the instrumentals are solid. This gets 4 stars for the instrumentals and negative infinity for the vocals. HARD pass.
I made it through the whole album although this is really not my jam. I don’t hate it but it doesn’t appeal to me.
Oooof, this was not good.
The riff isn't bad, then the lead yeller starts yelling. He obviously wants to be Hetfield, but he also has this dramatic thing going. Good metal drags you in to an experience. Cliched metal is intensely boring. This is next-level cliche.
Really? Can’t think even the band would think this was what they were put on this earth to do.
Oh, lord. I try to be reasonably in-depth with these reviews, and to give each album a fair assessment on its own terms, but I also reserve the right to not over-analyse something too much if I just plain don’t enjoy it. And here we are with Pantera’s “Vulgar Display of Power”, an eminent entry in thrash metal. I’ve never been a fan of the genre and this one was never going to convert me. Hated the thin, compressed sound. Hated the unbearable bellowed vocals. Hated the lyrics. Hated the hatred. See the guy in this oh-so-profound album cover, with the fist in his face? I think Pantera want that to be all of their naysayers across the 51 minutes of this album. Confronted by their almighty rage! I just ended up bored, thinking ahead to reviewing Supertramp instead. If you like it, good for you. I just couldn’t. Could barely listen through, so was determined to make reviewing it as little a chore as possible.
Just no
NON. NULACHIER PREFS : Walk, This Love MOINS PREF : Hollow
Listened to a couple songs. Just never going to be my thing.
Me niego a escuchar más. He llegado a Fucking Hostile.
Accidentally listened to the wrong Pantera album first---Cowboys From Hell is better than this (2 stars for Cowboys). A lot of tough-guy asshole posers I knew in high school loved this album. It's not the worst album on the list but there's not much here to like; removing the vocals might get it another star.
Not for me. I had to listen to it one track at a time. I can appreciate a song at a time to a degree, but listening to the full album is incomprehensible to me.
Ooh! You're hard. I don't like heavy metal macho posturing. I don't like this. Next.
Refused to listen.
Although I’m not a fan, there’s something to be said for the classic metal feel of this. And I’d never realized how truly sad, isolated, and lonely the lyrics are.
Glad that's over. Not for Williams.
100% NOT my bag.
Made it 30 seconds and no more. Just cannot abide that style of singing
Dnl
A lot sounded the same
Awful
Nope - not for me.
Pain.
just couldn't
Fuck that was a slog. My throat hurts.
I wasn't expecting to like this album, and by and large even trying to listen with an open mind, I was right. The good bits: some of the guitar riffs are pretty catchy, and the drumming is fairly epic. The main bad bit that renders the whole thing somewhat unpleasant is the vocals. I guess I just don't get the appeal but I don't find screamed gravelly vocals particularly fun
I tried - I really did - just not my thing. While it has a rhythm and beat to it, I don’t totally understand this music.
Since 10 seconds in I was just hoping for it to end.
Oh gosh. I just pretty much suffered through this album and hated every moment. My 10 yo daughter asked me why anyone would listen to this, and I suggested it would annoy your parents and that could be fun? "Poor parents!" she said. Even to annoy my parents I couldn't listen to this.
Nope, this genre of metal is not for me
0/11, 0%
did not really listen
Okay, I've heard it before I die (although it almost killed me). Hopefully I never have to hear this again. 1 star.
Just noise...
I am sure this has an audience who appreciate it, but it's not for me.
This is another one that is not for me. Some moments of the guitar play were okay, but the growling/screaming vocals just leave me hoping each track to please end quickly.
This is not music that speaks to me. I got the gist early on and then had to listen to the rest. Next!
Some of the guitars were good, but the vocals are just so bad I can't listen.
