What a masterpiece! .. if Anselmo wouldn‘t be such an asshole (-3 stars..)
I found myself navigating through "Vulgar Display of Power" by Pantera with a sense of indifference. The relentless aggression and uniformity of the tracks up until "This Love" left little room for the dynamic shifts and melodic elements I gravitate towards. Then came "This Love," a track that broke the mold with its unexpected melody and variation in intensity, offering a glimpse into a different facet of Pantera. It was a refreshing surprise, lifting the album from its aggression to reveal layers I hadn't anticipated. However, this newfound appreciation was short-lived, as the album quickly reverted to its earlier tone, prolonging my wait for another standout moment until the final track, "Hollow." The first half of "Hollow" resonated with me deeply, embodying the kind of song that has the potential to secure a spot in my regular listening rotation. Its blend of melody, emotion, and complexity was a stark contrast to the album's predominant style, showcasing what could have been if the rest of the album followed suit. While "This Love" and "Hollow" offered a brief respite, they weren't enough to elevate my overall impression of the album. If only there were more moments like these, my rating would undoubtedly be higher. As it stands, the challenge of finding enjoyment in the majority of the album's tracks, outside of those two exceptions, means my listening journey with "Vulgar Display of Power" is likely to be a rare venture. I'm just not a metal guy, but I can see how this is sort of the quintessential metal album of the 90s.

Trigger Warning: Heavy Metal Heresy The first time I heard this album, I was totally bored. Aside from a truly epic riff (Walk), the rest sounds like wannabe Prong and Helmet, with a wannabe Henry Rollins spitting weak "Come at me, Bro" meathead platitudes. "This Love" was and is the incel anthem. This, simply, sucks.
The music isn’t too bad, but it’s just so loud and I can’t get through the whole album.

It's early 90's metal. It definitely made an impact, and was a contributor to the hair/glam-metal of the 80's becoming separated from the idea of "metal" music in exchange for what people think of more commonly now. With that in mind, while I'm typically one for "separating the art from the artist", the blatant racism (past and present) makes it hard to have anything good to say about his.
Musically, it was fine. I don't mind really heavy three-chord music. But the least the guy could do was attempt to sing instead of posturing as a quasi-dark, wannabe drama queen. Even Lemmy made an attempt at singing. Why couldn't this guy?
No other decande than the 90s could have produced this. It's more about attitude rather than good songs. 2/5

Not a metal fan tbh, but I didn't hate this. I've heard a lot about Dimebag and this was my first time hearing the band. The shouted vocals drop it a star.
Metal is not my genre, though a few songs got my head bobbing. I'd imagine it would hit me different live, but it will not get me further exploring the band.
Despite my love of metal, Pantera doesn't do anything for me. I don't hear that spark, they sound a little hollow. Sad, but maybe another listen in the future would change that.

Not my kind of metal. A little cheesy with its overt edginess. If I heard just one of these songs mixed into a THPS soundtrack, I'd probably love it. As an album it's too same-y for me. Amazing album cover though.

I don’t enjoy heavy metal singing, but the guitar work this album is undeniably impressive. As a fan of Rage Against the Machine and Tom Morello I can hear how this inspired him.

Loved the guitars. Not as much a fan of the vocals. Feel like my guy needs a losenge.
The music is fantastic. Hard, of course, but surprisingly nuanced for metal. Slow bits and quiet bits make the hard bits harder. But I still can’t stand screamo vocals. I need to tune it out to get through the thing, which is not fair to the musicians present. Too bad.

Fun elements, but really a drag. It feels like a transition between the metal bands I like to the bands I loathe
I can appreciate the tightness of the band and the skill of the musicians, but in the end I just don't really relate to this kind of aggression.
I know Dimebag is a guitar legend, so one extra star for that, but this music isn't really enjoyable at all.

Similar to Anthrax for me but better guitar and worse vocals. I did manage to finish the album though. The last song on here was the best and sounds the least like the rest of the album… at first then we come back to the thrashing I did not miss at all.
Poeh, dat is even wakker worden na de smooth jazz van de dag ervoor. De rollende gitaarriffen zijn duidelijk toonaangevend geweest voor alle metal die hierna volgde. Helaas bloeden ze voor mij ook enorm in elkaar over. Wat uiteindelijk overblijft is een grote brij van schreeuwende gitaren, zonder echte hoogtepunten. Misschien als het album iets korter was geweest, maar nu kan ik er geen enkel nummer uit pikken Favorieten: -

As a headbanger raised in East Texas, I’ve heard a lot of Pantera. The guitar and rhythm sections are pretty decent, but repetitive. Unfortunately, the lyrics are really dumb and Anselmo’s vocals are trash. Which makes sense as Anselmo is a garbage human being.
thin tinny yet catchy metal shredding with some somewhat cringe vocals. wish we had more of syncopated metal beats and less of those vocals. 2.5/5
This album makes me feel like a redneck who feels he is a true metalhead because he listens to Pantera. A lot of the stuff on here was kinda wack. Maybe I'm bias but they just seem trashy to me. I will add an extra star for the pure instrumental talent. Great drumming and lead guitar playing.
forgettable genre
I just don’t enjoy this style of music.
Despite being better than sepultura and having a cool album cover, this was still very much not for me. I appreciated this slightly more than other metal based on the guitar work and varying of sounded but I still had a headache by the end and was wishing that it had ended about 20 minutes earlier.
I owned the first three Pantera albums. Listening to this brought almost no nostalgia. Groove metal maybe, but still just power chords distortion and throat screaming.

A fun listen and I could hear how many bands seem to have built their sound on these songs, such as incubus lol, but it wasn’t something I could listen to again.
Peak Thrash Metal had been and gone. Sounds like parody Metallica. Something about the singer. 2/5

Heavy metal is a tough genre for me to get into because even though I enjoy intense guitars and screaming instrumentals, I like a little melody in my vocals over just abrasive yelling. This record did the former well, but not so much the latter. It's certainly a vulgar display of power (and one out of place ballad), but not one that I was particularly excited about witnessing. Standout tracks were A New Level and Walk.
Phil sucks and I am unconvinced he's not racist.
I understand that Pantera is influential, but I was not impressed with this album. Its mix of thrash metal with some hardcore elements is not original. Its more straightforward moments felt like a Metallica cover band. I will say that was production was clean and the mix wasn’t muddy, however, it seems like the band is more interested in conveying an attitude rather than anything of substance.

Best Song: A New Level. I liked the rhythm of the riff best here. Worst Song: Live in a Hole. So sluggish and weighed down, with a solo that is comically at odds with the rest of the song. Overall: Pantera always seemed to me like a slowed-down version of some other, better metal band. I bet this sounds decent at 1.25x or 1.5x speed, but at its current pace it just meanders around these bloated, overly serious tracks. Boring metal is a sin, and this is as boring as it gets.
Pantera have always made me cringe. Don't get me wrong, I like some metal, but this is just a bit shit.
Not for me
I’ve heard the Cowboys From Hell album before and quite enjoyed that. I wouldn’t particularly consider myself to be a fan of Pantera, but I’m still interested enough to be happy to hear more. Songs I already knew: Walk Favourites: Walk, Hollow I think I might get a little hate for this, but I didn’t really like this album. Walk was fun, although I have to question if that’s just through familiarity and nostalgia and head banging at the metal club nights in my younger days. Hollow was a very good song, and the transition from ballad into metal within this track was fantastic, and gave it much more punch. However, is one good track with a dash of nostalgia enough to make it a good album? I’d unfortunately have to say no. However, thrash has never been a sub-genre of metal that I’ve particularly liked.
Sepultura were the superior groove metal band, and as an added bonus, their legacy wasn't tarnished with redneckery and cryptoracism.
Slow dive and MBV are better
Pretty cool album, but no idea what’s being sung. Probably a good album to listen to before a sporting event. It’s late so I’m not too inspired to write much about an album I didn’t hate but didn’t love all that much. In Pantera’s defence, I’m not much of a metal head, so maybe this album deserves a higher score🙃
well.. although i am not happy to see this album pop up, i am glad to be working from home today - alone - so i can turn this shit up and listen to it the only way it should be consumed. LOUD I think Pantera (and metal) has its time and place. Like I *might* put one of these songs on a workout playlist. Or if I'm working on my car. Or to torture a prisoner. I actually didn't mind this. It was energetic and angry. Will I ever listen to it again? I hope not, but I'm glad I did once. Favorite song - A New Level

Mouth for war-guess I’d better get used to screaming. Lots of impressive riffs, lyrics are quite generic A New level -another great instrumental, but l hate the way he says unscarred by trials for some reason, guitar solo pretty cool👍 Walk-pretty good, vocals a bit better imo👍 Fucking hostile- like chorus, think verses a bit cliche This love - nice contrast between softer verses and more metal chorus. Would lose the spoken parts though.👍 Rise- great guitar work, otherwise okay. No good- not a very nuanced take, I was distracted by lyrics for this one Live in a hole- Not like other girls, again another great riff Regular people - good if long intro, again l like the contrast between verse and chores👍 By demons be driven- edgy stuff, I have not liked any of the spoken word Hollow- a change of pace from most of the album, not great All in all didn't really get into this album, not really my thing. By the end I felt as it l had heard the next song already 2/5
Well I've heard of Pantera and really wanted to like this album, but outside of Walk, just felt like it was too much of the same sound over and over. Hollow mixed it up a little, then went back to the sound of every other song. Definitely different, but not for me. 2 from me.
2.5 Pantera was not on my 1001 Albums bingo card, but it was definitely a nice change of pace from what we've been listening to so far. That being said, I'm not much of a metal fan, as I find a lot of a bit too same-y and macho cheese, and while I enjoyed this album more than many others albums of the genre I've heard, it definitely fell into those traps for me (shoulda known from the album cover). I was also bummed cause I actually enjoy the song Cowboys From Hell and it's not even on this record (Walk is overrated imo). Would maybe re-visit songs - not sure about the full album. Favorite songs: Mouth for War, This Love, Hollow

It's a good metal album but it's really exhausting me trying to get through the full 45 minutes. Can't do it.
This didn't make my ears blead. I liked the end boss kind of vibe. But the grunting is too much so I just skipped to the end after the second song. Which was surprisingly calm!(ish)
Musically I actually think this is executed really well, although it does start to hurt my ears at a certain point. Very intense. What I'm really not a fan of is the screaming/grunting, though. It's just not enjoyable to listen to!
It was a struggle to get through the first several tracks, but everything from No Good through the end has actual musical material and moments of obviously skilled playing. It's dragged down by muddiness and calling a rut a groove.
I am once more forced to acknowledge the existence of thrash.
Pretty bad metal 2
Enjoyed this more than I expected to. Close to a 3 but I still don’t see myself picking this up again.
Too screamy for me, really, but I enjoyed it a lot more than I was expecting after the first minute or two. Won't listen to it ever again, but glad that I did. Top end of a 2/5.
It is a heavy metal album. I typically do not care for heavy metal. I listened to each song but some of them carried on a little too long so I skipped to the end of it. I see no need to listen to this album again. None of the songs were noteworthy.
If I enjoyed metal or rock music more, I think I would find this album amazing. I appreciate the emotion in the singing and lyrics and the instrumentals aren't awful, but just not my type of music at all. I'm kind of out of my depth with metal music, but I didn't dislike it as much as I expected. 3/10

"Vulgar Display of Power" is a remarkably heavy offering, and one can hear the inspiration in later bands where growling vocals put more into being loud but also with better clarity encouraging unification of listeners through sing-a-long. Musically, the driving beats the heavy distortion sounds clean on this album, driving home the point of clarity. Where heavy metal seemed to embrace chaos, there was a touch of beauty here as well. A fair example is "By Demons Be Driven" with its clear hook, but modest drums, loud and screaming vocals leaving no doubt to what is being sung, with chants of "beckon the call" complementing the chorus, giving us the dark and gritty. In an interesting change of pace, we get a ballad in "Hollow" until about halfway through when the emotions explode into anger imploring their best friend to emerge from an apparent vegetative state. However, this is about as interesting as the album gets. The energy only lasts so long if you are not doing something else to match with it.

Unlike other reviewers, I’m not triggered by this. No, I don’t feel the need to go clutch my teddy bear or Rainbow Brite dolls after listening. I’m not concerned if my heart rate goes up listening to it. But it’s not my thing either. Reminds me of Beavis and Butthead for some reason.

Some heavy and cool riffs, but the overly clean production robs this album of any emotion for me. The vocals also seem weirdly disconnected from the music, like someone doing an impression of a metal singer over a karaoke backing track. 2/5.

I think it’s funny that there’s typically little to no overlap between fans of rap and fans of heavy metal. Both feature mostly spoken/shouted vocals, sick beats, and percussive instrumentation from non-percussion instruments. In Pantera’s case, the crunchy guitar acts like a second drum kit driving the rhythm. Lead singer is not really singing, exactly… but it’s not necessary that he do so in order to get the point across. I’m sorta meh about this. It’s kinda boring, IMO… even though I should be energized by the RAWKK!!!!1!! I guess because I’ve heard it all a hundred times, done in more interesting ways. But I should give credit where it’s due; some of my favorite bands wouldn’t exist without the influence of early metal bands like Pantera. I was barely sentient in ‘92, but there can’t have been many bands like this before then. Credit for defining the genre, but I don’t love it.

Walk This Love
the hard metal was just not the best and it got super repetitive.
Pantera must be one of the pioneers of the cookie monster vocals and for that alone they should be excoriated if not tarred and feathered. I'll throw a slight amount of credit their way due to technical dexterity and a few listenable solos. Again it should be obvious this isn't my bag and as such take into account as I find the vocals comical at best and generally horrific and the so-called songwriting non-existent outside the poor man's Maiden lifting of the intro to Hollow. A generous 2 from me since this doesn't seem to be a genre to easily grow into, even for one who grew up on hard rock. Where are the songs?

Too hard and harsh.
Lets shout single words like Pantera does. I have DETERMINED that this is shite. Formulaic beat out those chord intros, lyrics screamed interspersed with guttural few word phrases, metal riffs in the middle, more shouted phrases, end with guitar riff. Were the early 90s really this bad musically? Maybe why I have little from this era in my collection. Vulgar display of power, they got that right
Did not enjoy. This isn’t my genre and the more I hear of it the less I like it. I truly don’t understand it. The music is non-melodic. The vocal delivery is literal screaming. The lyrical content as such is juvenile. All the tracks sound the same.

This is a garbage album from a garbage genre. I did listen to it, and I remember it. It sounds more like a celebration of violence rather than an objection to it. My reaction then, and now, is why so pissed off? You grew up in the USA, steeped in white prvilege - maybe get angry for those who weren't.
I love getting these awful metal bands. No thought required, one pentagram.

La sélection d'albums de metal commence à me frustrer. Parce que j'ai eu un Judas Priest, je suis bien content, mais ça fait peu. Depuis, j'ai eu du Limp Bizkit et voilà que maintenant, je dois me farcir du Pantera. Je sais que beaucoup de gens adorent, mais moi, ça m'ennuie profondément. En fait, je comprends pas l'intérêt. Le point fort de l'album, c'est clairement les solos qui sont plein de personnalité, hyper accrocheur, heureusement que Dimebag Darrell est là pour me réveiller un peu, parce que le reste du temps... j'accroche 0. Les riffs sont basiques au possible, c'est riffmetalannee90.mp3 et même pas du genre inspiré. Parfois, ça s'emballe un peu et ça réveille, mais non, la majorité du temps, il se passe rien d'intéressant. J'imagine que si ça me semble aussi générique, c'est parce que Pantera à largement contribué à créer ce son, mais ça ne change rien à mon ennui. Et le chant, bordel. Phil Anselmo, je le trouve totalement inintéressant. Je suppose que l'objectif, c'est d'être le plus cru possible, mais tu peux être cru et avoir de la personnalité et un peu de relief. Là, il est 90 % du temps en train de gueuler de la même façon et les 10 % restants, enfin il montre qu'il peut un peu moduler sa voix, mais encore une fois, rien pour me tirer de mon ennui profond. Nan vraiment, à une époque, j'ai essayé plusieurs fois d'écouter Pantera pour comprendre le fait qu'ils soient aussi adorés, sans succès. J'écoute à nouveau maintenant, plus de 10 ans après et rien n'a changé. Je suppose que cette musique n'est pas du tout faite pour moi. Je serai ravi de ne plus jamais me pencher dessus. Ah oui et sinon, Phil Anselmo est un personnage plus que douteux qui est coutumier des déclarations et gestes "tendancieux". Rien que pour ça, une étoile de moins. Et du coup, ça fait 1. J'espère que c'est le seul album du groupe dans la liste, hein.

Since I didn't listen to Pantera as a pre-teen, there's absolutely no point in starting now. This album makes 52 minutes and 52 seconds feel like a very very long time. It can't get much worse than this!
Was honestly very difficult to get through and truly not my kind of music in any way, shape, or form. I can somewhat respect the artistry here but even then it’s hard to get what is going on. Metal and this style of singing is done very well here but is not easy to get through or listen to.

I’m retired so I get to spend my mornings read the news, drinking my coffee, petting my cat. It’s a gentle calming experience that allows me to begin my day of peace and joy. Then I played Pantera. I immediately wanted to slit the throat to the next person that walked in my door.
Some of the more down tempo tracks I enjoyed but the rest of the album wasn't for new.

This has to be the straightest, most macho album on the entire list. And that is saying something, considering the amount of hip-hop on it. But this is a particular kind of machismo, the knucklehead, 'no thoughts, head empty' kind. For a gay boy like me, there is a strange allure to it, but only for the fantasy, as it is not worth it engaging with this type directly. And as for their music. It is not worth it even for fantasy. Metal is one of the genres I really don't like and this album wasn't an exception. It's aggresssive, angry, hateful, and tedious. Sure, they are technical and can play their instruments but that's not enough for me to like an album.
This is the kind of metal I just don't vibe with. There's just something about the lyrics in this sub-genre... "A new level of competence and power" for example. Hearing that very over dramatic, shout-y over enunciated way he says "comp-e-tens-ah" is just, well, cringe--there's no better word for it.
I almost always listen all the way through, but I turned this off after No Good (Attack the Radical). Maybe one of the last four songs is good. I'll never know, this was just so monotonous and boring.

There were some pleasant enough moments in there, and I'm sure that, as Wikipedia claims, all the band members are amongst the greatest at their positions that have played in the wider metal journal. Err {{debatable}}, but there you go. So, I got through it but didn't particularly enjoy it. Musically it probably deserves two stars, but the frontman is an obvious cunt, so it gets one

I didn’t even like Pantera when I was 14, so there wasn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that I’d actually get ‘em now. For me, they’re not only “Mega Bloks” Megadeth, but maybe one of the better examples of a “discount” version. Pantera is angry without shit to say, loud but not interesting. In “This Love” they attempt to show their range, but it ended up being the worst song I’ve heard from this list so far. A teen with a guitar, 5 minutes of practice, and a Boss Metal Zone ™️ pedal can play any of these songs nearly as well as the recording. I mean, that riff from Walk is literally 0-0-1-0-0 on the low E. Dimebag’s unwieldy, signature guitars are an extension of Pantera’s fierce-but-dumb vibes, with iconic finishes including: - lightning bolt! - confederate flag! - camo! - flames! - other aesthetics you’d see on a t-shirt for sale at a gas station in Alabama

I was only vaguely aware of Pantera in the nineties, and I don't remember learning much about them until maybe a year or two before Dimebag Darrell was murdered. Oddly enough though, I lived in Arlington until I was about eight years old, and had I stayed in the same house and not moved to Houston, I would have gone to Dimebag Darrell's alma mater, Arlington High School. I only know a couple of Pantera songs, one of them being "Walk," which is on this album. I associate "Walk" with the boot-licking 'Blue Lives Matter' crowd, so it's fair to say that I already have a negative view of this album. I'm really not looking forward to listening to this, and even though I try to be objective about most of the things I review, I'm willing to throw that out the window today. Time to throw on a Punisher logo shirt and get down and dirty with the boys! After a somewhat promising opening track, Vulgar Display of Power fell apart pretty quickly for me. When "Mouth for War" kicked off, I thought I would have a decent time with this album. The guitars and drums were driving, and I could feel myself begrudgingly getting into this album. But "A New Level" didn't do much for me, and even though "Walk" wound up being one of the better songs on the album, it didn't do much for me either. I felt like I was just trudging through an hour's worth of the same growling, the same throbbing drum beats, and the same guitar chord structures. There just wasn't anything on this album for me to latch on to. Back to "Walk" though. As annoying as I find this song, I like its structure, and the vocals are kinda catchy to yell along to. The best song on the album though was the closing track, "Hollow." I thought this was the only song on the album that had some emotional depth to it, and I liked that it actually had some guitar playing that wasn't power chords and some vocals that weren't yelled. Pantera can clearly do more than just the same thing over and over again, so why didn't they show more range on this album? I guess this sort of thing just isn't for me.

Tried to listen to all but eh. Pantera has been around forever and any time i caught them it was "It has all the elements I like - but I just don't." Something about the harsh sound of both guitar and voice combined is graty on the nerves. Song 3 'Hollow' was okay - but not representative of their work as a whole. On my patented -100 to +100 rating scale where ripping open that box to find the product inside is misrepresented by the photo on the box is a -30 this is -50.

Nope. I think this probably influenced a whole gaggle of imitators, because this sound was everywhere in the late 1990s. But even in its original form (?) it’s annoying, & boring. I just don’t want to hear a guy vomit angry lyrics onto the microphone for a hal hour. The drumming is intense, but not artful. The guitar playing — stock. I don’t need to hear this again, though I’m sure I will. I’ll be aggravated when that happens…

Vulgar Display of Power is a chaotic mess that’s definitely not my type of music. Even if it were, the vocals and drums feel weak, and most of it just sounds like noise to me. My ears still feel violated.
I got this album served to me on a Monday, and I've put off listening to it all week. Decided to just get it over with, and I hate it just as much as I expected. I don't like metal, I don't like screaming, it's all just too much and overwhelming. It's not enjoyable, and my ratings are purely based on my own personal listenability. This is literally not fun. I don't even want to give this a repeat listen, like I did with my other 1-star hard rock album. It's just a no for me, I got through it, and never need to again. I DID listen front to back though. I’ll give every album an honest listen.
I find it so funny that the cliched sound in this scene involved such HUGE guitar sounds but such wet-cardboard drum sounds. And the demon-affectation of those vocals are not something I want or need to hear. Guitars + 4 stars Drums - 1 star Vocals - 2 stars

Hard metal isn’t my thing these days. They’re good even though it sounds like a Metallica ripoff to me. Punishing guitars and drums, leavened by some more melodic interludes and lyrics about love and loss. Still, the unrelenting ragged growl of the frontman’s voice is too much, tips it into too aggressive and ugly for me now. It’s a 1 not based on artistic merit but to indicate that’s it’s not for me.
Interesting riffs, a lot of annoyingly screamy vocals, the tempo of the whole album making it energetic. Metal.

"Pantera" is music I can't relate to at all. Aggressive guitars, aggressive screaming, aggressive drums, etc., topped off with an aggressive cover. I'm assuming the lyrics aren't about loving your fellow human beings or flowers. I'm sorry, but I absolutely don't need that.

No This is one of the newer metal bands I've heard from this list. I don't like metal in general, and I really didn't like this. I prefer the older stuff if I HAVE to listen to metal. Somebody please tell me what is appealing about this genre? About the ridiculous singing voices? About the repetitive nature of the drum parts? Even the guitar parts? What's fun about all the songs always being at the same energy level and rarely dropping? I don't get it and I never will. I have a rule that, unless I really hate an album, it has to get at least two stars because it's still a piece of art that someone worked really hard on, and I can appreciate it for that alone. I can appreciate the craftsmanship, the technical achievements, and production and see that it deserves two stars at a minimum. But I hated this so it gets one star. Not sorry. It’s supposed to sound heavy and “powerful,” but it just makes everything sound flabby. Drums sound like toys. It’s the irony of our time that heavy metal tends to be the lamest, doinkiest shit.
