Reviews (page 9 of 14)

This is Nirvana's magnum opus, nevermind (heh) those who speaks otherwise. Not at all a flawless record, and not even the best in it's genre, but will be forever a testament of what never came, of the untapped potential that Nirvana could reach.

Not heard this for a long time! Not as good as Nevermind, Incesticide or Bleach, but still a strong showing

What a whirlwind of an album. Definitely an ambitious step away from what Nirvana came up on. Some of the vocals are cacophony to me, but a lot also lands beautifully since I like harder rock. Favorite track: Milk It

*Serve the Servants

It has its moments but overall, I love this album. I did then, I do now.

Need to listen to this one more. 4 stars

Good thing I already know most of this album or I wouldn’t really be able to appreciate it over Eric’s singing and air guitaring.

So cynic. Much angst! Gotta be honest, I like Nevermind more. 😬

Favorite song: heart shaped box

It’s always a bit sad listening to this record. But it’s pretty brilliant: raw, raucous and also introspective and revealing. And cello.

Even though I preferred the musical direction and production by Albini over the super overproduced Nevermind, I have to admit it didn't have the staying power NM did.

Quite enjoyed it, rather cohesive.

Not as good as I remember. Some real classics but mixed in with a fair bit of filler designed to deliberately make it less appealing than nevermind.

I respect what Kurt Cobain wanted to achieve with this album, and despite Steve Albini's comments after its release, I think they achieved it. Some absolute classic Nirvana tracks like Heart Shaped Box and All Apologies, the rougher/harder sound is captivating even if you haven't heard Nevermind.

Great songs, although maybe feels a little like a transitional record between Nevermind and what was to come next. A sad listen.

listened to again an angry, depressed, high octane classic

As far as I can remember, this is the first time over listened to this whole album, at least intentionally. I was a little bored at times, but I think if I heard just about any track on here in isolation, I'd probably be interested in hearing more. 7.5/10

Kurt Cobain's writing is pretty great here. As is the harsh production sound.

Not bad, I'm not a fan of the "shouty" tracks but there are some good cuts that any sung "properly" - heart shaped box, dumb, all apologies Not quite as good as Nevermind IMO but still a fine album

Great effort but not there best

Never been a big nirvana fan but this album rocks

This is a tough one to rate (and to listen to). You can really tell that Kurt put his heart and soul into every track. However, he must have been in such a dark place that it’s hard to hear this album without being constantly reminded of Kurt’s impending mortality.

Didn’t like it at first but will always listen now.

Always liked this album. Not as good as some others of theirs or the genre, but good anyway.

Obviously have a lot of love, hard to believe they went this out there with that much attention on them.

The last nirvana album. honestly I can respect the process for wanting to take a newer, angrier, noiser sound than Nevermind. Takes artistic balls. I think that of the two, this is the better grunge album. I think I like Nevermind more personally, but the craftsmanship in this album is more evident. Radio Friendly Unit Shifter is a personal favorite track.

Anything Nirvana is great in my books. This album: Stripped down and bare, represents the rawness of a band coming out of a punk background! Bonus!!! Alex Grey famed artist for Tool did the album artwork!!!

good. bad production

me copó

I’m surprised that I hadn’t listened to this before considering how much I like Nevermind. This is a great album, but I don’t think I like it as much as that one though. That said, I can see myself listening to this again and again

Easily Nirvana's best album, containing amazing tracks such as "Serve the Servants", "Heart-Shaped Box", "Milk It", and "All Apologies". All around a constantly amazing album.

3 1/2 stars. Not as good as I remember. But still some amazing songs on it.

Listened a long time ago and thought it was great

A good relisten

J’aime nirvana

Great. I like Nevermind better because some of these songs are a little too grungy for my taste

This is the most accessible Nirvana I've heard so far, and they compensate for that with noise and a few deranged lyrical turns. The drums seem barebones across basically the whole record, mixed loud. There always seems to be a drone, but the instrument or voice carrying it varies. I can't begrudge Cobain the grunge voice, but still don't adore it.

Has a rock band with a more flawless catalogue ever existed? This is an excellent album, but you already knew that. Not so fun fact. Frances Farmer is the most famous of at least 5 well-known songs by various artists dedicated to the ill-fated actress from Seattle. Fed up with media frenzy and the excesses of commercialism that surrounded her as a result of her fame (sound familiar?), she behaved erratically, was eventually committed to a psychiatric institution where she was allegedly raped, drugged and tortured. The experience led to her struggle with addiction and caused a severe worsening of her mental health. Kurt and Courtney supposedly had a strong fascination with her, and unsurprisingly connected with her story on a personal level.

8,0 Great Grunge Legendary group

Very good

HSB and the guitars in general are undeniable but i think maybe i just don’t like grunge that much???

Love this album, Favourite songs being heart shaped box and rape me

Great album, such great emotion and energy from Dave’s drumming, Kurt’s singing and Kris’ lines

One of nirvanas best

Still nothing that really sounds like this, even with a pronounced Steve Albini influence on the drums. The tight, speedy tempo and lurching cascade of "Very Ape" preceded by the delicate, dour, violin-augmented "Dumb" are original sonic touchstones that few other bands have approached. "Scentless Apprentice" is an updated, perfectly-cooked thud of earlier postpunk. The singles "All Apologies" and "Heart-Shaped Box" balance the sometimes-harsh growl of Kurt Cobain's vocals and lyrics with saccharinely laced layering. The pacing of the album is ultimately flawed even if each song aside from "Tourette's" and "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter" stands on it's own as an example of the unique sonic possibilities that meaningful production and raw talent might engender.

Heart Shaped Box no duh, pennyroyal tea, all apologies. It’s undeniably a fantastic album, yelling stresses me out though.

Highlights: Frances Heart shaped Very ape Tourette’s Radio friendly

Heartshape box and rape me were really good

probably my favorite Nirvana studio album

This all seems so frantic. What trouble Cobain must have been experiencing, if all this is him being honest. Not wanting what he got. Many of these songs are very cool in themselves but really they are hard to listen to knowing how much pain he must have been in. Maybe too much was made of Nirvana and Cobain in particular, but there was an incredible focus of media attention on his life after Nevermind. The stress of that is clear in almost every song on In Utero.

It’s not Nevermind but what the f@$@?!?! You expect consistent and unrelenting genius? It’s still damned good.

It sure is Nirvana. I think Nevermind is more consistent, since there are a few meh tracks on this album (most notably "Tourette's") while the worst Nevermind song is probably still in the Top 30 best grunge songs of all time. Strooong 4/5.

Not my style 100%, but I did enjoy listening to this. A few songs were amazing grungy goodness.

It's tough to follow up an album as popular as Nevermind, but in my opinion Nirvana really did it with this album. It's a different, punkier direction but it hits hard.

I haven't listened to this because of teenage prejudices. A really good stomp a heavy sound.

I think i prefer this to the other one

Ra Ra Ra . Quality noise.

Did Frances Farmer ever have her revenge on Seattle?

08/17/2022 :’) can’t believe this was my first one to start this all off. This album and Nevermind are the pinnacle of my early high school years. Truly feels like a throwback listening to this album again. I guess I’ll use this to also document what’s going on in my day as I do this. Use it like a lil Time Capsule. Laptop shopping before I start architecture school in 5 days. We’ll see how it goes by the end of this project, aptly titled “Until Graduation.”

I prefer Nirvana's more polished, produced-for-radio songs to their harsher material. Even on this album, songs like "Heart-Shaped Box," "Dumb," and "All Apologies" are preferable to me than songs like "Milk It" and "Tourette's." This album showcases the energy, angst, range, and creativity of the band - possibly Kurt most of call - but isn't the album of theirs I gravitate toward. That said, it's still a very solid album.

I have an issue with the screaming, but I do believe Kurt Cobain was a very talented artist. He bascially wrote this entire album. Each song is unique. After Nevermind, Cobain wanted to produce something different, and he did. I am not a huge Nirvana fan, but I do feel that this album is an important chapter in the history of American rock. "All Apologies" is one of my favorites.

I was sort of surprised to see this album vs Nevermind, but after listening through again it does have something special.

Excellent moment.

Heart-Shaped Box was highlihgt. lesser known album to me of Nirvanas but will listen more post this. "Rape me" and "Milk it" were also great.

Nirvana third last and strongest album. Pulsing with riffs, angst anger and screams. Brutal but listenable. Strong 4.

It’s Nirvana!

Last album before Kurt committed suicide Rape Me - cordero told me abt this one. Sounds like a similar chord progression to smells like teen spirit. Dumb and Heart-Shaped Box were also good

Brings me back to high school. Some great tunes and a few that are now a bit grating for a 46 year-old. :)

Solid. Enjoyed what I recognised but not all of what I didn't. Need some relistens to sink it in.

My first attempt to listen to this album was last night as I crawled into bed. So, from that listen my only thought was "Grandma is too old for this!" I was concerned that this train passed me long ago and there was no chance for me to climb on board. In the light of a new day, I did enjoy much (not all) of the album.

I was so glad to arrive finally at Nirvana. I didn't really know anything from this album apart from the singles Heart-Shaped Box and All Apologies, both of which I like a lot. The first listen through was rough. Maybe I was tired, hot, crabby. But I just couldn't find the groove of the album, couldn't find more than a hint of greatness. Second time through, though, I fell into the pocket. The sound is raw and fuzzy and real, like having your ears scrubbed by a loofa. There's poetry and pain and humor in the lyrics (which, to be honest, I still can't understand without reading them --- but there's treasures to be found there). At the time of this writing, I've not yet listened a third time. But I just might.

During Nirvana's short career, they produced only 3 studio albums. Bleach, the indie album (if you can call Sub Pop indie?), the major label, mainstream breakthrough record, Nevermind and their last album, the follow-up, In Utero. Nevermind was a tough act to follow, it went on to sell a gazillion records, got tons of airplay and was widely praised as one of the great albums of the 90's. In Utero was in fact a commercial and critical success, it was at the top of the charts and it also sold way too many records, but was it any good? Personally, when it was released I didn't care for it or I didn't really want to listen to it. At the time, I had an issue with bands that "sold out", signed with major labels and attracted a whole different audience (you didn't have before you became popular), once you became "too mainstream". Reflecting back and listening now, they didn't really compromise their sound too much, some of the songs on In Utero were more abrasive and didn't have the sound of a typical chart-topper. Music was shifting, grunge became mainstream, punk became popular and it became fashionable to listen to music that wasn't just force-fed through popular radio stations, so maybe it was a good thing. In Utero, did reflect the time period, it was a very good album, but if it came out 5 years earlier would it have been noticed?

Listened Before? Y YES! This is a great album. It has it's moments of irritation (like Scentless Apprentice with all the screaming), but overall it's phenomenal and captures late GenX angst perfectly. Added to Collection? Y (was already there) Songs Added to Playlist: Serve The Servants, Very Ape

Not as good as Bleach or Nevermind. Still a great album but lacking the ferocity of Nirvana's previous albums. I always felt the production too clean for what they were trying to do. After listening to this, I had a listen to the Steve Albini mixes. They were right to change the vocals as they were too Low in Albini's mix but the rest of the sounds were perfect. The released result being to slick. Still this is the soundtrack of a band who couldn't deal with the massive changes success had brought. Cobain's lyrics being were conflicted. Fun fact: I was interning at Juice Magazine (an defunct Australian mag that was partnered with Spin) when the advance copy of the album cam into the office. Even though I was there as a graphic designer, one of the editors invited me to listen to the album with him so I could give a punter's opinion. I can't remember exactly what my response was. Something along the lines of not being as excited by it as Nevermind but still loving it. 29 years later my opinion hasn't changed that much

i like dumb x

Great album start to finish.

Really good. The production is on point. I forgot how hard it goes

Didn’t hit as hard as Nevermind across the board, but still has some absolute smash hits.

What can I possibly say about "In Utero"? It's good. I like it.

This album still holds up for me! So great! Forgot how much I loved this album.

I was way into grunge in the 90s but heard so much Nirvana on the radio unsurprising never got their albums. This was my first listen to “In Utero.” Great intensity and overall solid, but I do prefer my grunge with more guitar leads and harmonies.

I don't think I've listened to this album before. Of course I love Heart Shaped Box, Rape Me and All Apologies. But I like that I discovered Milk It and Pennyroyal Tea which are both really good.

Another one I know "of" but never put on end to end. What fire in their bellies. And I'm sure I never really listened to the drums on this record. They hit HARD. I guess in my own ruleset I can't give this a 5 because I don't think every last track is a keeper or at least serves the whole, but it's damn close. Surprises: Scentless Apprentice, Frances Farmer Not surprises: Rape Me, All Apologies, Dumb

Still Nirvana, but more inconsistent and hard to listen at times. Many hits mixed with hardcore grunge. Loved the bangers, grit my teeth on some of the rest. Still a great album tho. Highlights: Serve the Servants, Rape Me, Dumb, Pennyroyal Tea, All Apologies

Nevermind lepsze, ale to wciąż całkiem ok. Takie nie za mocne 4/5

Przyjemny, mocny grunge.

Not as much of a stand out as Nevermind, but still a damn good album.

Its legendary but it self pity hasnt aged well.

Some killer songs on here but think I prefer that live album before this. He definitely goes pretty wildly grunge on a few, but still picked up a few tunes -- Big fan of All Apologies, Rape Me, and of course.... Heart Shaped Box

Not Nevermind, which is exactly what they were going for. More noise, less pop, but still a lot of classics here. One of my favorites, Sappy, was a b-side.

This is one of those albums where I have heard multiple tracks off of it but have never sat down to give it a full listen. It is the first Nirvana studio album generated for me on this list, but I have received their Unplugged record already and have listened to 'Nevermind' many times. My overall impression of In Utero is that while it is a very good album with some amazing songs, it somewhat pales in comparison to both of those classics. I feel that this record starts off very strong in the first half (the first four tracks are all diverse, powerful, and just pure awesome); however, it slowly started to lose me in the second half. The last stretch of songs (completely disregarding the closer "All Apologies" as that song is excellent) is overall forgettable and repetitive in my opinion. The energy was there 100%, but it was the first time I felt like there was filler on a Nirvana album. In spite of that, I thought the band's direction on In Utero was super interesting as I see them going two completely separate ways. It is clear that they wanted to further expand sonically by incorporating strings and ballad-like songs throughout the track-listing, but you can also tell they were attempting to get back at critics/fans who thought they might have gone too mainstream on NM by releasing more hardcore/brutal songs such as "Scentless Apprentice" and "Tourette's". It would have been very interesting to see them progress past this album as I'm not sure which direction they would go (I lean towards more polished rock as Kurt Cobain was a huge fan of the Beatles/John Lennon). Overall, I had a fun time listening through this one completely, but it didn't blow me away. 3.5/5.

It was okay, I thought that the vocals overall were a little bit lacking though like I thought that the mix was kind of weird. I think that there were good melodies and good instrumentals and drums, however, I just thought that the mix of the vocals didn't really fit with the rest of the track. Overall pretty good. I think that my favorite tracks were Heart-Shaped Box, All Apologies, and Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle. I thought that the album got better as it went along, but maybe I just need to hear it more than once.

If Nevermind portrayed a baby on its cover picture and this is named In Utero there must be a reason: in a way the band is acknowledging the huge burden that following up on that album was, in spite of all of their efforts to distance themselves from it. At the same time, the uterus is the place where the baby was before. A warm, acuatic, comforting environment... Isn't there a parallel with the swimming pool and the dollar bill? And still, there is no regression here, quite the opposite, from baby to foetus, unless Kobain meant a return to a somehow more authentic nature of the band. Because there is nothing happy about the Nirvana state of consciousness, and nothing comforting about being in the uterus, especially when you know what is waiting for you out there. Famously a difficult listen, and I can confirm that this album surely is not easy listening . Never mind the Nevermind naysayers, this one is completely another beast, and deliberately so. Personally, it took me a while and many listens to even start appreciating its qualities, and every single time was like listening to a new album. Now that I am listening to it I am surprised at how it sounds raw and clean at the same time, loose and contained, wild and... I don't really want to say controlled but you get the sense that they knew what they were doing, what they were going for. The drums bang, the guitar screeches and howl, submerged in feedback, the vocals are throat-ripping, everything is so explosively loud and on the verge of collapsing that barely anyone is mentioning the cello on two tracks (Dumb and All Apologies). It's pure torment, anguish, rage. There is almost no pop in here. And still. No, this is not a classic. It's not for everyone, and for sure it's not for every day. A take it or leave it definite statement Same as a birth.

Brilliant album.

Brilliant album, great production and barely a bad song on it.

classic

Having a hard time rating this whole album. There are 5 or 6 great songs but also 4 or 5 terrible ones. Some of the worse ones just consisted of him yelling until his voice broke. Sometimes that works out (like on "Rape Me") but other times it was hard to listen to. The good songs pull this up to a high 3, low 4 stars, but not sure I'd like to have to listen to the whole album again.

I'MMM ANNNEEEEMIIICCC!!!!!

To be honest, this is the Nirvana record I like the least. It just doesn't jive with me in the way the others do and there aren't really any big stand-out tracks on this one for me. That said, it's still pretty good and I enjoyed re-listening to it as a whole.

In Utero is great. Starts out with two unashamedly non-hits, then just bust the door down with Heart-Shaped Box. Nirvana always knew what they were doing, even though we may not have. Steve Albini produced the album and I'm a suckered for almost anything outta Electrical Audio, but this was kinda the big one. I like to think you can feel his influence on this album. They never lacked grit, but this album just feels gritty in just the right way.

Clean grunge sound, some killer songs. 90s leader.

Excellent grunge album. Probably nirvanas second best one. This album has some great hits and it’s deep cuts are pretty dark. Only like a song or two on here I don’t like. 8.4/10

A difficult listen, even after all these years, when you know what was coming next.

Great album which kicks against the success of Nevermind.

I like the more chill songs more than the more aggressive ones this album also feels like a precursor to their hits

This is the second best Nirvana album.

I would listen to Bleach on my walkman riding the bus home from high school. Those preppy fuckers I went to school with thought I was a devil worshiper. Then, a year later those same kids were so far up Nirvanas butt it made me sick and it totally ruined Nirvana for me. Years later, probably after Cobain died I bought Unplugged from a used CD bin and rediscovered them. I grew to love that CD but hadn't heard In Utero fully until now. Sure the tracks that you hear on the radio are great, especially Pennyroyal Tea and All Apologies. But I really liked, Frances Farmer and even Serve the Servants. I'm not a huge grunge fun but was happy to be reacquainted with this band.

This album is rough around the edges. Sure there are a couple polished classics like Heart Shaped Box. The cello in Dumb is a magnificent touch while All Apologies is a masterpiece to me. I can’t get enough of that song. I’m quite fond of the rough edges too. The energy on Very Ape and Serve The Servants is intoxicating. And even Pennyroyal Tea, which was released as a single, kicks up the distortion. The lowest parts are both Tourette’s and the screaming on Scentless Apprentice, which are hard on the ears. Fortunately, these are relatively minor passages of the album. I used to have this album, but I only remembered the singles. I don’t think I appreciated the rawness back then as much as I do now. I’m glad to have rediscovered it on a deeper level.

Klassiker.

Nirvana is a band that I'd never sit down to play but always enjoy when I do hear them. The tracks released as singles carry the album imo

it's no Nevermind. Four stars.

I _really_ enjoyed this album and while I'm very close to giving it a 5, I feel like this is not the Nirvana album for that yet. Iconic.

Definitivamente IT'S A MUST

It’s uneven, we know it was intentional but it’s uneven. The top tracks are superb tho.

I've never rally listened to a Nirvana album straight through, mainly sticking to the radio hits. But this album gave me an appreciation for the intentionality that Nirvana gave to their complete albums.

Some of Nirvana’s best songs are on here, but their pursuit in producing a more raw album, ends up mixing those great songs with a lot of noise. As a fan, still a great album, but inferior to Nevermind for sure.

I think I'm dumb or maybe I'm just happy. I think I'm just happy.

The best from this album IMO: - Serve the Servants - Heart-Shaped Box - Rape Me - Dumb Had never heard the full album before. I only knew their hit singles. Very solid stuff. C'est cru, défoulatoire, pure. 3.9/5

Crazy, I'd just had some bad news that day so the album was perfect. Loved Nirvana anyway, but this album was edgy, raw and incredible.

The sound of this album is great, and holds up over time. Easy to hear why they kind of took over the world. On the other hand, there are 4 or 5 songs on this album that I really like, but all the others wear me down and are exhausting to get through.

Overall pretty good but a few songs are a bit meh. Definitely some cool songs in here I've never heard, I've really only heard Nirvana's "hits". 3.5 up to 4.

A few tracks I hadn't heard before, probably cus they aren't as good as the well known ones.

Strange to think that this was considered anti-commercial at the time. I missed out on Nirvana for some reason - maybe a year or two too young, or my rural Devon upbringing, or possibly that by the time I encountered them they were incredibly mainstream already and I was a snob about them. Shame, as this is a really great album.

In Utero deliberately tries to be the anti Nevermind, at least sonically. It’s rougher, rawer and with less of the sheen and polish of its predecessor. I listened to this album a lot as a teenager, and it still sounds pretty good today, but I still prefer Nevermind, just.

Impossible to listen to without contemplating the tragic aftermath, In Utero will forever haunted by Cobain’s death. The album is angry, prickly and unsettling; as well as a band doing whatever they damn well please, despite what must have been enormous pressure to make Nevermind II. The sound is incredible and the energy and musicianship startling. Some tracks are almost unlistenable which makes them intriguing. And what a sign off All Apologies is. Fascinating, infuriating, uncompromising.

Here's another that I own, and I haven't listened to it in years. While a few songs may suffer from radio overplay, the deeper cuts still shine through. Sooooo much better than the Foo Fighters.

This is my second favourite Nirvana album. Heart-Shaped Box and Pennyroyal Tea are timeless classics, but a few other tunes on this album just go so hard - Very Ape and Milk it in particular. Raw music

middle school days

Great Album. Genre Defining catching the zeitgeist

Many many classics: Heart shaped box, Pennyroal tea, rape me. For me not as strong as Nevermind, but still massive album

ЛУЧШИЕ ПЕСНИ (по мне): Serve The Servants, Rape me, Very Ape.

Classic Nirvana - been a while but still sounds fresh

7.917*1.03= 8.155/10

Like - heart shaped box, serve the servants, rape me

Angst ridden fat riffs perfect album for a Friday buzz. Milk it would be my highlight

Mis favs: "Serve the Servants", "Rape Me", "Dumb" y "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter", esta última suena divertida. Long live Cubain? 8.5/10

Didn’t like them at the time, changed my mind now

a great racket - muddy, raw, dark as fuck. 4

1/2 Great. 1/4 Good. 1/8 Bad. 1/8 Real Bad

The hits are great (thus 4 stars), but the rest are meh.

I like the Albini production, and the bits where it goes a bit more weird e.g. Milk It and Scentless Apprentice.

Scentless Apprentice is really aggressive. It demonstrates the rebellion and angst of the grunge movement. Heart Shaped Box is quintessential Nirvana. Definitely an emotional and angry record overall. Lots to unpack. But All apologies as a closer - brilliant!

I don't know man. Like I recognize this a really solid grunge album. But I don't really like grunge in general so I feel like my score for this will be lower than others. but I do really enjoy Heart shaped box and Dumb. All Apologies isn't too bad either. Not sure what sound they were going for when they made Tourette's but I don't care for it. But maybe that was the goal? who knows. Overall, I see it's value and worth in the genre itself. But I never fully understood the hardcore Nirvana Kurt Cobain thing. Decent music for sure though.

-Aggressive, frustrated and driven -Self-harm subtexts

great stuff

6/12 cant do the screaming

Better than I remembered.

Liked it

What else is there to say about Nirvana's In Utero? Kurt's vocal performance is incredibly unique, the sound is raw, abrasive, and satisfying, and the lyrics are honest, edgy and epic. It was Nirvana's attempt to create a sound that is less easily understood by the mainstream public than Nevermind was, but I would argue that it makes for a much more compelling and interesting record. I do clearly prefer some tracks over others, and that mainly has do to with the vocal mixing which is perfected on Serve The Servantrs, Heart-Shaped Box, Rape Me, Pennyroyal Tea, and All Apologies. 4/5.

If Kurt Cobain wanted a more un-polished and un-refined record than Nevermind, I think they successfully accomplished this without a doubt. In Utero is possibly the quintessential grunge/garage rock albums of the early 90s. At times the raw sound could be a little grating, but looking past those couple of tracks, it's one to have a good head-banging sesh to. Best: Heart-Shaped Box; Pennyroyal Tea Worst: Scentless Apprentice; Radio Friendly Unit Shifter

Not as great as I remember but still has transcendent moments. All Apologies is one of the great album cappers ever.

Better than I remember.

Pretty much a modern classic.

My appreciation of Nirvana has definitely increased since the last time I went out of my way to listen to them, largely due to their support of the Riot Girl movement. I wanted to go through the lyrics but didn't end up having time. All in all, really enjoyed this album! They're a well rounded sound. Spotify's algorithm successfully erased whatever edge I gained from listening to this ablum in full by putting on Weezer's Island in the Sun directly after. Well played, Spotify. Well played.

I went through a short Nirvana phase as a teenager, but I've never been a huge fan. And as a pathetic snob, the hype around Nirvana/Kurt put me off revisiting. I don't remember much about this album compared to their other two... Pleasantly surprised! I like the noise rock elements and the more distorted/discordant moments more than the "standard grunge" sound I remembered. This album has aged well for me, and I enjoy it more now than I did in the past.

As a massive ‘fuck you’ to the music industry the is an unapologetically brutal album and a brilliant one at that. When I’m Utero came out I struggled to love it it in the way I did their two previous albums and only really appreciated as I got a bit older. Personally I still don’t rate as highly as Nevermind nor does it hold a place in my heart in the way that Bleach does. It’s lacks a bit of the rawness of their debut and - couple of obvious exceptions aside - lacks the overall strength of songs of Nevermind- but still an amazing album

Bastante dedo no cu e gritaria misturado com musica excelente

In Utero is beautiful far more often than it is ugly

Entero weno, esa guitarra es pura magia

Very good

Brings me right back to high school and college.

Like me some Nirvana! Solid album with some great songs and good songs. Feeling slow today, so no review. 3.5 stars. Rounding up.

I like this better as individual songs than as an album. Still very good 8/10

Finally felt like getting back into listening to these albums but decided I'd go through the ones I've heard before and wanted to re-listen to. This one is still good!

Good stuff.

Some good, some not so good

Esta ya le tengo oído

Spät am Tag, und zu diesem erstaunlich unpolierten Abschiedsbrief turned Dreckpunk, (Fuck You All Ich Hab Kein Bock Mehr!) ist ja nun alles gesagt. Und sagt es auch selbst: Rape me, I hate myself and I want to die. I feel you, Kurt.

This album does not sound like the best of Nirvana for me, but still, it's a great piece of music and definitively worths it!

Le daré un 4 porque es Nirvana. Pero no me ha gustado mucho. Muy loco.

Damn, we really got this the day after the Courtney Love album. Anyways, Nirvana is ok. 7

Three or four classic Nirvana songs. I really enjoyed this album back in the day and I still enjoy it now. Not as gritty as their first album, but great nonetheless.

I was pleasantly surprised by this one, I’m not normally a fan of grunge in any capacity but this one hit just right

I've gone against Nirvana as a matter of principle my whole life - but I actually like this a lot. Heart Shaped Box and Rape Me are overplayed but Serve the Servants and Scentless Apprentice are kind of awesome. Looking at the lyrics while listening gives me a new appreciation for Cobain. I feel like this album has had its dick sucked for so long I didn't want to like it... but it's angsty and uncomfortable and dark. Great listen.

❤️

Oh, the memories.

Remember a lot but not all of it

For me, this album has a rough start but then continues with some if Nirvana's best work

Well it was time for Nirvana and their 1993 album 'In Utero.' I can go back to 1993 in New Jersey, and my roommate had a monster sound system in his car. Whenever I would travel with him around the city of Glassboro - the music would be thumping. Like the many jackasses you see driving around with the stereo that makes everything on the car shake. This is where I started hearing In Utero for the first time. Nevermind had landed and Nirvana was the biggest and best band in the world at the time. It felt like at the time, In Utero was a bit of a disappointment for fans who wanted another Nevermind served up on a platter. Listening to this now, its difficult to listen without the overwhelming history associated with this band. I think honestly, I was focused more on Nirvana Unplugged in NY when it came out in 1994. The stripped down accessibility really appealed to me more than the angry noise that comes from being the biggest and most misunderstood rock star in the world. Still a pretty monumental achievement when looking backwards at this band.

The album is killer.

Great album with many of my favourite songs from Nirvana. Unfortunatelly there are a couple duds here that make me rate it not as high as I would like to.

Just missed 5 stars. Sadly, Nirvana's last album before Cobain died.

Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2021. What a pleasant surprise! Nirvana's "In Utero" starts as I expected, Heart Shaped Box, Rape Me, and all that, which I've always appreciated but never really felt on any deep level. Once we get to Very Ape, however, I think the album takes a positive turn. It's heavy with a unique energy. Prior to this I hadn't sat through a full Nirvana album, and while I do not think I'd sit through another, I very much enjoyed this B-Side and could see myself returning to a few a these tracks. It was nice hearing some tracks beyond your typical edge-lord grunge Nirvana hits and I think I gained a deeper appreciation for the band. All Apologies is a great ender, and while I've enjoyed the song before, it hits just a little bit different closing out this album. 8/10 for me. Lost points for making me hear HSB and RM again, which I could have done without. Bonus points for every single B-Side track going real hard.

Kurt Cobain's powerful vocals and guitar mark this album of the cornerstones of grunge culture

Good album

Brilliant

Really good album all the way through.

Has some of Nirvana’s great tracks on it, as well as some underrated bangers. 4/5

Songs sound very stripped back and raw Mix of immediate hits and dissonant noise rock Sick, introverted lyrics All the songs seem connected without sounding similar

All apologies

Best Nirvana album. Dumb is an absolute classic!

A little chaotic at times, but I suppose that was intentional. Unfortunately it did not help my headache. Kurt Cobain really is something unique, though. 3.5

this fucks also!!!!

8.5/10 FT: Rape me

This album is a banger. I love how the first song just bursts out with dissonant shit, as if to say ha ha check this shit after our last poppy, clean, kazillion-selling album. I can't honestly say I prefer it to nevermind, but the highs are up there imo. Heart shaped box, rape me, dumb, eeaaasily among their best. 4/5.

Classic!

Lite för ojämnt för högsta betyg!

- I like the hits on here; they tend to be the more melodic songs. The other ones don't really do much for me, but the album is definitely an angsty vibe, and I like Kurt's anti-establishment ethos. - Overall, I like it, but I doubt I'll ever reach for it, so I'll prob round down from a 3.5. - My sister loved Nirvana when she was younger, and I asked her what she'd rate this, and she said a 4.

Lots of screaming. Some gd ones in there

All apologies was the best song by far

6-7 but 3-4. Made me feel really disturbed at times. I liked All Apologies for some reason

Def some hits on here. Some of the deeper cuts are a little scream-y for my liking — as much as I like Nirvana.

very questionable lyrics, enough for me to turn away from the songs - album is okay, i like the cover but i'd rather not be in utero if the songs describe it's contents

listen, i do like Nirvana, but a song called Rape Me is just going to be a bit of a lot of too much, even if I understand where it's coming from

Es muy bueno.

209. nice

I was a big fan of Nevermind when it came out but didn't really give this a chance when it came out, I'm not sure why. It's good. Nirvana will always feel like music for teenagers to me so I probably won't listen to this again (and Nevermind didn't stay in my rotation past my teens) but I will always have a place in my heart for them.

anguished, angry, inarticulate with frustration and disappointment - I am sure this was cathartic for the band to make, it sounds like a lot of emotions were released. Having said that, it is not a record I particularly enjoyed listening to

I love the menacing bass of Scentless Apprentice, but I did not enjoy the yelling. That’s unfortunate. Favorite songs: Heart-Shaped Box, Rape Me.

Too much screaming for me to be in utero (idk what utero is) 2.7/5

Not the biggest grunge fan so we’ll see how this goes. There are some great songs in here like heart shaped box and all apologies but there are also some songs that I couldn’t really care for like scentless apprentice and Tourette’s

Much less “for me” than i really expected but i still had a good time! When i was in the psych ward when I was 20 a guy told me about pennyroyal tea and drinking your own pee so k thought that’s what that meant but it’s not so that’s weird to remember

This album is obviously precious as record of Cobain’s legacy, but for me it all hangs on Heart-Shaped Box and All Apologies, everything else feels a lot less notable

Fav tracks: Dumb, Scentless apprentice Least favs: Very Ape, Milk it Dumb in personal playlist

7/10 Buen album, no me volvió loco pero me gusto, cumplidor

I like some of their songs but was never and still am not a super fan.

Standouts Heart Shaped Box Dumb Pennyroyal Tea All Apologies

Nirvana is a good band! They are also overrated. This has some good stuff but also a lot of filler. Top tracks: "All Apologies," "Heart Shaped Box," "Rape Me"

this album suffers greatly from MTV Unplugged also being on the list. Most of the best songs are also on there and far, far more impactful in the live performance.

3.5 if possible. Some really good singles, some fillers.

Yeah. I know this album. It's pretty good. I've always been one of those "Nirvana is a little overrated" guys, so while I've heard their stuff a bunch, they'll never be my favorite band. This is solid enough.

It’s no Nevermind. Some good tracks, but I can see why nobody had the cover art for this as a poster in their room.

I never actually owned this album as a kid. I found a great copy recently and paid decent money for it, and when I put it on, I was so disappointed. For me, some of it is just too much. There are some awesome tracks, and then some tracks where it's just hard for me to find the music in them.

As heavy as anticipated, little darker than expected

that shoebox albini sound :)

Will forever be in the shadow of Nevermind

A couple of good songs

sometimes they are so good, sometimes so bad

ten album ma dwubiegunowke i moja relacja z nirvana tez

Heart shaped box can only do so much work

never mind much better.scentless apprentice, milk it, pennyroyal tea, all apologies. only songs i like off this album

I like these guys but not so much this LP. "All Apologies" is the one stand out tune.

Scentless apprentice was rough. Wasn’t a fan of the angsty screaming. Many classics on the album tho

Pretty noisy and not as poppy as Nevermind, but still fantastic and gritty

There are some good tracks on here but I'm not sure I really see what all the fuss is about on the whole. Yeah it's a raw and intense record, but I feel like interesting musical moments are few and far between. It feels like a lot of the songs here are just retreading old ground from Nirvana's previous albums. Maybe I just can't appreciate them properly because I'm not a grunge guy though, I dunno. Favourite tracks: Heart-Shaped Box, All Apologies, Very Ape

It was good but I think not their best work. A little bit too much on the noisy/edgy side for me today. I might rate it differently on different days though.

Very weak 3/5 to be honest. Was expecting more based on what I knew about Heart-Shaped Box, which was the only song I actually liked or found memorable... 1st 2.5 2nd 1.5 3rd 4.5 4th 3.5 5th 3 6th 3.5 7th 2 8th 2 9th 3 10th 2.5 11th 2 12th 2.5

It's etched in my memory - hasn't aged particularly great but it captured a mood in its time and place

I can groove on multiples of tracks from NEVERMIND, but no matter how many times I listen to this album, I keep defaulting to only truly enjoying "Heart-Shaped Box", "Dumb", and "All Apologies". From my experience back then it was clear that his album got more attention than was really warranted due to the success of NEVERMIND and because of the proximity to Cobain's death which occurred only 7 months after the release of this album. I guess I was one of those people that wasn't interested in them returning to the days of BLEACH and pre-BLEACH sounds. My wife met Kurt Cobain in Portland, Oregon before they were famous, at the home of one of the members from Hazel, probably Pete Krebs, where they were crashing before they were going to play a set somewhere in Portland. She was brought to the house by a guy named Adam' whose brother managed the record shop, Music Millennium. As she tells it, he wasn't out among the throngs of people out in the living room and the kitchen, but rather in a back room, suffering quite a bit of pain. She bumped into him when she was on her way to the bathroom and this hunched over dude with a guitar was sitting on the edge of a bed, practically in the dark. He said something to her as she was walking to the bathroom, so she stopped and had chit chat with him. At the end of the chit chat he introduced himself as Kurt, and apologized for delaying her from the bathroom. She said that from that brief experience with him, she was not surprised when he killed himself years later. She observed that it wasn't so much what he said, or how he said, he just exuded a wave of suffering and darkness. I only offer this story to rebut those folks who seem to think he killed himself because of his fame. I doubt it. The dude was troubled way before that. Anyhow, back to this album. Personally, I think that only NEVERMIND and UNPLUGGED belong on the list.

Scentless Apprentless as I read in the song notes; the lyrics were inspired by Cobains fav book: Perfume by Patrick Suskind and that’s in my TBR. So once I get to reading the book, so that was cool to know :D That go away scream in scentless apprentless was first time listening was a WOAH The song Tourette’s got me head banging, def one of the songs I like from the album.

I enjoyed listening to this album. It was the perfect thing to listen to while I did my work. Will this album stick with me? I don't know yet

Very dark and angry album. Sorry Kurt. Were you exploited instead of helped? The music is a reminder of dark, rainy days stuck inside the monotony of high school. I didn't like it then, respect it now, but can't love it.

I do like the grungy rock sound sometimes but this was very grungy. Still quite enjoyable though. Always like nirvana i guess. 3/5 for me personally.

7.7 great grunge instrumentals and a good bit of range in kurts performances but peraonally just not a big fan of kurts voice some good peaks like very ape and heart shaped box like and very constistent

perhaps i just haven't listened to it enough or i'm too used to nevermind but i can't push past like a low 3

The hits are great, but some of this is barely listenable. Averages out to a 3.

Pretty good. Heart-shaped box is amazing.

Disclaimer that i did talk to flynn about this album after my initial listen and i think hearing about why someone else values an album and the emotions behind it inherently shapes your response even after the fact. I wasn’t sold on first listen and i still don’t think grunge is really my genre but i did appreciate it a lot more with the wider context and also not on a bus at 730pm while trying to read pachinko. In recognition of my first response this is getting a 3 but its definitely on the 3.5 end of the scale.

You know, I always wonder what would’ve become of Nirvana if Cobain had lived on. Sonically, I think this gives us a hint and it’s a bummer that we didn’t get to find out. Generally, this isn’t really a sound I gravitate towards (the hits hit, but it’s not something I go out of my way to listen to) and for that this’ll get a three, even if objectively I could’ve rated higher. Heart-shaped Box, Pennyroyal Tea, and All Apologies were winners for me.

There were some bits I really liked in here but it also was a lot at some points. Less polish isn’t necessarily a bad thing but it did reduce my enjoyment of this album

An album I almost never put on despite really loving some of the tracks.

First half is way better but the 2nd half also has all apologies Nevermind is way better than this album A lot of it is non understandable screaming 3.5/5 Favorites: heart shaped box, serve the servants, all apologies

I know this came post-Nevermind and that's obviously a huge standard to hold this up to, but I'm just not as much of a fan of this album. It's so grimy and discordant. Parts of it are quite jarring, like the jump from Scentless Apprentice to Heart-Shaped Box. There are some brilliant tracks on here, but... they're the more well known ones. At least finishing on All Apologies leaves it on a real high note.

I honestly don’t really get the hype of nirvana. I find it all quite whiney. I don’t even think it’s relatively heavy, which I don’t really like, I just find it overly intense for no reason. I thought some songs were interesting, but others let the album down. I didn’t particularly like tourettes or rape me, but I enjoyed heart shaped box, radio friendly unit shifter and all apologies. I don’t think I’d really chose to listen to them or this as a whole again unless they were just on.

This was alright, didn’t love it in its entirety. Expressed its ideas successfully for the most part but I don’t think it was always sonically that interesting to listen to. Definitely not as good as their other work I’d say.

Great final album from the Seattle boys

okay, so i gotta give this a 3 - it's closer to 3,5 though. i feel like the overall vibe of the record appealed to me more than "nevermind" at times but at the same time there were a lot of tracks which felt a bit too "screamy". i really like how nirvana uses repetitions to strenghten the anxiety and angst of the lyrics, so here "in utero" gains a plus from me. my favorite track has to be "heart-shaped box" but i also enjoyed "serve the servants", "dumb" (!!!) and "all apologies" of course. i'm very open to re-listening to this album as i believe my rating can still change!

I understand Nirvana's place in music history. They were widely recognized at the genesis of rock's move towards alternative in the early 90s. It's hard to overstate their place at the forefront of this shift. That said, it doesn't mean that they are rock gods who can do no wrong. This album is very representative of the duality of this band. There's a lot to like here, but just as many tracks which don't hold up. Certainly, tracks like Heart Shaped Box, Rape Me, Dumb, and All Apologies demonstrate who Nirvana truly can be. All excellent songs in different ways. But for every one of those, we get songs like Very Ape or Milk It which just aren't great tunes. Beyond this, the dirty little secret is that they aren't amazing musicians. Cobain's voice, while distinct and with a cool rasp, isn't amazing in the way that contemporaries Layne Staley's or Chris Cornell's voices are. Dave Grohl is an average drummer (even he would tell you he's not great). Kurt Novoselic is an excellent bassist, on that we can agree. Collectively, they were better than they were individually, which is a testament to what they built with Nirvana. It's just that their greatness is a bit overblown, and this record is a demonstration of that. Upon relisten, it's pretty average.

If you like rock with some kind of sadness and depression you'll like this

Loved the hits, but much of the rest was a wash. 6/10

They ended with their best album IMHO. Starts out strong with 3 good tracks but 'Rape Me' comes off as Kurt being a bit too victim Piscean for me and it only picks up again on 'Milk It'. A descent album with some good lyrics and driving energy. Not quite a 4 though.

It's a good album but I think the other Nirvana projects were better. 3/5

This one is not as essential as Nevermind so probably doesn’t need to be on this list. I’m a big fan of noise rock so I like that this album went more in that direction however I don’t think many of these songs really hold up that well. I think these guys were burnt out at this point and probably needed a bit more time to work on the material. Although they did have time but Kurt’s addiction probably got in the way of making good, productive use of that time. It is kind of cool that this album is on this list but let’s trade this one in for an album by Jesus Lizard!

Kurt Cobain’s voice is just so raw and I iconic. But this album did scare me a bit.

It’s a mixed bag. Veers too often into the thrashy grunge which has never appealed to me. When it’s paired back it touches on excellence. There’s still only one studio album of theirs which I rate as consistent and accessible enough. It’s why I probably didn’t like them back in the day.

Very decent. Not my first Nirvana pick, but also not the last. But I also choose to believe that they would not make this album again, especially after Me Too. It's an okay album, but nothing phenomenal imo

Ganska bra men mycket brus. Bästa låtar: - Rape Me - Dumb

Probably the first time I listened to this album in its entirety. I am one of those who enjoy the hits from Nirvana but this album only have a few for me.

I've heard it before, in a darker time.

Less polished than Nevermind. Less fun as well - didn't enjoy it as much. HSB my favourite off the album. Would relisten.

I prefer Nevermind but some good tracks; 1. Dumb 2. Heart-Shaped Box 3. Rape Me

Hit and miss. 3 seems fair.

Probably should have given Nevermind a 4 in hindsight.
