More high school nostalgia
Very low 4 because they made 7 cool songs and 5 of the worst songs ive ever heard
Rape me и другие треки :)
yeah this is a 4! yeah this is pretty darn good! yeah!
++: Serve the Servants, Heart-Shaped Box, All Apologies +: Scentless Apprentice, Rape Me, Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle, Dumb, Very Ape, Milk It, Radio Friendly Unit Shifter, Tourette's +-: Pennyroyal Tea 8,5/10
I came to this quite late (what people called Grunge in general). First listened to a few of the individual tracks as part of the Nirvana Unplugged MTV concert and CD / download
This is a high 4s. It's sloppy, messy, and yet often perfect. An amazing album
For some reason I can’t give this album a 5. It feels like a 4.5 but I feel like it doesn’t hit right to take it all the way. There are some really good songs on here and some of my favs from them but to me Nevermind brings what I expect from them the whole way through.
It seems as if there was a good amount of growth musically between Nevermind and In Utero, although ironically the less successful songs here tend to be the more punk ones, the sound they so wanted to stay more faithful to. Still a lot of really great tracks and excellent production.
A great album - nothing that beats those opening few tracks on Nevermind but amazing bits.
Decent!
Forgot how much I liked grunge. A couple of belters on this album - All Apologies and Heart Shaped Box. Lots of angst in the album - definitely got to be in the right mood to enjoy it.
Listening to some of these songs now, you can almost hear the foretelling of what is to come for Cobain sadly. I still like the majority of the album as the drums and guitar are great.
I don't think it's their best album. the energy, the angst, & depression can easily be felt & heard. the contrast in tones in between some of the tracks was pretty stark (Tourette's to All Apologies). I do love the use of the cello in Dumb
Good
Prefer this to Nevermind. Cobain’s vocals are stronger and clearer and the songwriting is more focused. The harsh, industrial guitar riffs appropriately complement the vocals. Grohl’s drums provide a strong foundation and shine when pushed to the foreground. Listened to: walking around Providence. Favorite tracks: Scentless Apprentice, Milk It, Radio Friendly Unit Shifter
Yeah this is peak 90's rock. Lots of strong catchy songs. Dave Grohl is also one of the few drummers that regularly has actual drum riffs. Want to love this record but man I wish some of those deep cuts were better. Some absolute gold but it's surrounded by mediocre songs :/ Still a 4 star for me though of the sheer strength of the good tracks
Not my favourite Nirvana album, but there's some great ones on here.
Just woke up from a 30 year coma. Can’t wait to see what these guys put out since then!
I liked the pattern this album continued.
Don’t be Dumb. Milk It and listen to this thing.
Definitiivinen ilmaus siitä, mitä tällä bändillä on tarjota: hokemat/koukut, Flipperiä poppina fanittava mökä, mollivoittoinen melodisuus. Lisäksi Heart-Shaped Box voittaa Smells Like Teen Spiritin sinkkubiisinä.
4-
Big Nirvana fan over here. But, In Utero is just so fantastic. All bias aside, it’s kinda wild how much depth this album has. Tracks that really showcase Cobain’s progression as a musician and lyricist, and really put his skills to the test. I just dig this album
It’s not Nevermind, but damn, it’s close. So many great songs and such a great album. I teach about ‘what if?’ moments in history and this whole album is a “what if life had been less cruel to Kurt Cobain?” This album is one I usually listen to a few times a year so nothing will change there, but I don’t think it’s quite in five territory.
I think I have Nirvana Stockholm Syndrome. I don't know if I like them or not. I've been told they're the greatest band of the 90's for my entire life and I have to like them. Am I singing along to "Heart Shaped Box" and "All Apologies" because I like them so much, or have the lyrics just been driven into my head over the years? Their influence is obviously huge, and they established the sound of the 90's. I just wish there was less influence over how I should feel about them to make my own determination, but I feel like I can't give them less than a 4.
After the powerhouse that was Nevermind the next album is a response to the enormous success.
Nice mix of some raw and some more polished songs. Not too easy on the ears at times, but the tension tends to finds a quick enough resolution. I gravitate toward the mellow moments in the end - Dumb and All Apologies stand out.
nirvana will always make edgy cool
Here are a bunch of adjectives that I would use to describe this album: constricting, enraging, abandoned, suffocating, empty, bursting, sad, painful, confusing, indifferent, raw. None of it is particularly "good", but it is special. I think grunge delivers more on an emotional level than a musical one and this album is a good example of that
I appreciate it lots, much better than the naked baby album My only problem with the album is how fatiguing it gets before it’s over, but I don’t mean that as negative as it sounds. I like their sound, it’s just quite an assault on the ears
A good album, my favorite of it was Heat-Shaped Box.
Favorite Tracks: All Apologies Heart-Shaped Box Rape Me
It's funny that this is the "inaccessible and abrasive" Nirvana album, but it's very accessible and mainstream compared to actual inaccessible and abrasive music
I listened to this a few months ago after not hearing it since the 90s. I hated it. Now I listened to it again and I've warmed up to it quite a bit. Strange how multiple listens change opinions.
The difficultt third album :) It's much more raw and aggressive than nevermind but it's a stunning album. Feels like a massive F U to a lot of people
There is some brilliance on this
Not as polished as Nevermind but still an absolute masterwork of the grunge genre. Makes you wonder what could have been had things turned out differently.
Still classic grunge. Holds up.
The really good songs are of an ascension that Nirvana could only have dreamt of. Brilliant compositions, plus that Nirvana sound and the now ever-present personality that is Cobain, makes this an all time classic
Prefer Nevermind but this is a more extreme direction perhaps with the same full-on 100% commitment. Assured with integrity which is all you can really ask from a band. After that it's just down to personal taste.
Fav: All Apologies Least Fav: Dumb
This made me feel some sort of way. Very depressing, but also nostalgic. Weird feeling.
One of the somewhat surprising things I’ve learned from this project is that I’m not much a fan of grunge (or at least, not the grunge albums I’ve gotten so far). I guess that, aside from Nirvana, I hadn’t really listened to much of the genre. I have mixed feelings about this one too, but it’s been the grunge album I’ve enjoyed most till now. I prefer the rougher sound here to the more polished Nevermind. There’s something almost punky about it, which I appreciate. There’s a bit of nostalgia here - a friend in middle school was a fan of Nirvana and introduced me to their music. I don’t think I really got it then. Maybe I still don’t, but I do like it better now. Favorite tracks: All Apologies, Heart Shaped Box, Radio Friendly Unit Shifter
endlich losi mol in utero freu mi uf imminenti depressione. serve the servants isch bluesiger alsi denkt hett. und sochli en doo-wop beat. afoch chli en hässige afang. scentless apprentice het de sevi verzellt seg vo das parfüm inspiriert. ich gseh dass de dave grohl behauptet er seg afoch en disco drummer wo inere grunge band spielt. kurt schreit echli hä. riff goht hard. er seit ihm de go away time. heart shaped box isch bitz de hit i think. huuuere cool. sehr schön. hässig. rape me spielt mega uf teen spirit ah. es ist sehr guet. lislig luut time. frances farmer isch nice gsi, sehr so wieni mer in utero vorstell. dumm isch nöd so dumm. easy schön mit de strings und so. very ape isch wie monkey mit me uni abschluss. milch es isch huuuere grating. zum glück los ich nur so halb uf de text hey. radio friendly isch funny well ihm isch nöd hahaha. tourettes mega punk. es isch so luuut.

Was great music to listen to during wrestling practice, but as I’ve gotten older and less angsty, it doesn’t speak to me as much. I get it’s culturally significant and all that so it gets bumped up to 4 stars
Fantastic album with some flaws that put it just short of 5 stars. In places more interesting that Nevermind, but not as distinctive in others
I also prefer Nevermind, which may make me a basic bitch, but I don't care. Nevermind and Unplugged were the ones that changed my life; In Utero was the one that I "only" really liked. But I've continued to really like it through the years, and even if it doesn't totally get all the way up to 5 stars for me on a personal enjoyment level, it's still a tremendous group of songs. 4.5/5
Grew up passively listening to this album sooo much because my brother would listen to it all. the. time. There was a good couple of years where he would rotate between this and Pink Floyd’s The Wall every single day. So much of it has been burned into my brain but I still have never been a huge nirvana fan otherwise, so it was really interesting revisiting this on my own terms and actually really enjoying it!
Never really been a Nirvana fan but this one has always been my fav of theirs… i really appreciate the hardcore breakdowns and noise rock influence on this thing. Really makes ya wish they made some more music cuz they were headed in a really interesting direction
I always wonder if id like nirvana if I hadn't grown up listening to them.
Angry, angsty, and somehow low key in it's writing. Emblematic of the 90s
My first Nirvana album! This is another album where I know it will be even better in the fall. Luckily I listened to it on a very rainy day so I got an idea of how much I like it. Some songs are better than others but overall a very strong album.
Good solid rocking album. Of course its filled with signature Cobain angst. Solid 4
Didn’t love this quite as much as the Nirvana MTV Unplugged album, but still quite enjoyable.
Mint
Albino excellence
Nirvana was what bad kids listened to when I was growing up. I thought the song Rape Me was about someone asking to be raped. So did this kind of terrible kid I grew up with. Justin, you know who your are. Turns out it's a song about how most rapes are repeated offenses and are done by someone close and that Nirvana was trying to speak up about it. Who knew?
Not quite as good as Nevermind, but it's more consistent and is their harshest sounding album. Amazing closer. A
Some terrific tracks. Couple of plain screamo detracts slightly for me but still good. 8/10
Great raw emotion here, good drum hooks and compositional drum parts, great lyrics, and plenty of less popular gems like pennyroyal tea.
4.5 stars. I have not enjoyed Nirvana in the past, and it would be easy to write off this album as a bunch of grumbling. Subtitles ON for this one. I used to find Cobain's affectation grating, but I enjoy it now, and can see how it blends with the rest of the song elements. Even though not every lyric made total sense, like on "Scentless Apprentice" and "Rape Me", I still appreciated the emotions behind the singing and the energy of the instrumentation. There are also songs that are simple, "Dumb" and "All Apologies" that make it easy to enjoy what the band has to offer. Also "Heart Shaped Box" kicks ass
I hate to say this, but I spent most of the album wishing I were listening to Nevermind. Which is a shame because this album has its own unique and interesting sound, and is very engaging. But I just couldn’t get that thought out of my head
4/5. Okay, awesome. A change in the right direction from Nevermind. No filler, no extended songs for no reason, and no bad song, just some okay ones. Although it doesn't have bangers like the first side of Nevermind, it does have consistency and for a band that's loud and chaotic, that's a skill. It does garner repeated listens but I can give it the benefit of the doubt and give it a 4 at least. Best Song: Heart-Shaped Box, Milk It, R*** Me
Liked a lot even for grunge which isn't really my thing
A good album, not quite 5 stars but a good album.
Love the contrast of this to "Nevermind." This album comes across darker, more abrasive and raw. Easy to forget this is from 1993.
Vihasta.. meikäpoika äitin masussa noin vihapoikaaa ollu... Jos rauhotutaan vähän..
Very good. Hearing this takes me back to the time when it was released. Songs from this album seemed to be all over the place when it was released, but I didn’t mind because it was so good. I don’t remember buying this album, and it’s not inscribed with my name and date of purchase like I usually do, but the CD is in my collection. It might have been part of a deceased friend’s music collection their mom gave me around 15 years ago. Which is fitting because he and I hung out a lot when this album came out. Anyway. A few months ago Conan O’Brien had an interesting episode of his podcast where he talked with Grohl, Novoselic, and Albini about this album on the occasion of its 30 anniversary.
You know, this is in fact a great album, I think. Timely of course with the death of Steve Albini, but probably (barring the Unplugged album) my favorite Nirvana. They didn’t mean as much to me as other folks my age, but I can’t deny their impact and influence, which is in no small part based on the quality of their music. A terrific record, which not only makes me wonder what could have been if Kurt had lived, but also what we could have if Dave Grohl was still a drummer.
A nice mixture of four and five star songs. It hits some pretty high highs. I find myself revisiting Nevermind more often, but we’ll see where it compares to this one. I would’ve loved to see where Kurt’s music went after this.
Passionate, somber, and reflective. Cobain sings with such ferocity and grit. His voice and lyrics will forever be remembered, layered on top of melodic and sometimes aggressive guitars and drums. Nirvana was a pivotal transition in music and created pathways for many more types of music to surface. This record has some really great hits and sounds that are timeless. RIP Kurt.
The best solid album of Nirvana.
I wish I could give it 4.5. Great album
Although it's good you can see their formula appearing in a lot of songs and the variety wanes thin
The great songs are great and the rest are pretty average
Nirvanan suhteen myöhäisheränneenä mukava kuunnella tämäkin levy kertasoittona. Pyöräytin neljästi läpi ja totuus on jossain 3-4 välissä, mutta ehdottomasti positiivinen kokemus joten neloseen taipuu.
I love Nirvana. One of my favorite bands. I haven’t listened to this album, as a whole album, since it came out. I forgot about the couple of weird tracks where Kurt just sort of screams at the listener.
Melhor q o nevermind
I like this record a lot, but for me it's not at the level of their other records. Still has some great songs though. Strong 4.
m amazing album
a seminal classic. I enjoyed although was not. fan of Grunge Rock at the time.
Woaw
All Apologies is so great. This smells of the mosh pit (rather than teen spirit). I wonder if it's called In Utero because it goes back (in spirit) to before Nevermind - the mother of the baby. If you see what I mean. Maybe everyone knows this and I am being Dumb (another great track). So raw it's tender.
Perfect album to block out the bullshit on a busy Tuesday morning in the office. Will definitely be coming back to this album in the future. Favourite track: Very Ape, because it’s a good track and Arctic Monkeys completely ripped it off with ‘Potion Approaching’ on Humbug!
A classic - obviously
Feel like Nirvana is defined by the singles that have been massively overplayed on radio / other means. While the albums themselves have become a bit under appreciated over the years. Really enjoy the complete listen of this album, instead of piecemeal singles.
Nirvana was getting interesting. Every album was playing into a different direction and this one followed by unplugged live shows a path that they may have done something really unique. Nice to hear something less polished and more wild. Cobain's voice is unreal. Very solid album.
The first 2 tracks are fine, they just don't do anything for me. I've always liked something about Heart Shaped Box. The arrangement is pretty good and just sonically. Kurt's voice is the thing that carries most of these tracks. I really like Pennyroyal Tea. All Apologies is a strong Finish
I always thought Nirvana was a touch overrated. They kind of are, but they definitely were good all the same. As epic a closer as All Apolgies is I like it when the band plays harder, like Scentless Apprentice. I don't think this deserves a 5 but it is definitely a strong 4.
This album really shows how versatile Nirvana was. Killer songwriting and this album really shows off their heavy side
I love this album. I think it was brutal and raw.
Reminds me of middle school. Has some absolute bangers, and some awful songs. All in all it’s good
I like Nirvana. I do not love Nirvana. I also respect Nirvana. There's plenty of terrific and legendary tracks on this album. There's also some tracks that are really difficult to get through for me. When they click, both with songs that rage and those that are softer, it's hard to beat them in the grunge genre. This is not a perfect album to me...and I do get that overrated feeling...at times. Favorite tracks: Heart-Shaped Box, Rape Me, Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle, Dumb, Very Ape, All Apologies.
Scentless Apprentice, Heart-Shaped Box, Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge, Very Ape, Milk It, Pennyroyal Tea, Radio Friendly Unit Shifter, All Apologies
it’s in utero
Great
Why Kurt? Why? Not as good as the others, but still amazing. Standouts: All Apologies, Heart-Shaped box, Rape Me, Dumb, Pennyroyal Tea.
excellent
A fine punk album. Not Grunge. Mainstream Punk Rock. Love it. Fooled everyone, then pulled the plug. I remember the live audio feed of Courtney Love talking for hours to the gathering mourners at the Seattle Center Fountain. Strange and sad moment for my childhood playground. I grew up 6 blocks from the Garage House… used to get high at the nearby waterfront park as a teen. Knew all the kids who grew up in my hood, but I left long ago, and had no idea Kurt moved in years later. A strange place for them to be… very much not their people. Now a wealthy white enclave of gated drives and Do Not Enter signs.
I liked it, but not nearly as much as I thought I would. I know it's cool to prefer this to Nevermind, but I do honestly prefer that album. The middle section is pretty fantastic though, Dumb in particular is amazing, and Pennyroyal Tea is great. In no way do I dislike this album, but it makes me wish I was listening to Pixies, or even the earlier albums instead. 26/03/24
Definitely a more raw sound than the mega hit nevermind, but with a few radio friendly songs. I'm still surprised a song called rape me got play.
4.5 stars. A little too rough and experimental at times but there are some great tunes and overall it's a good album. I liked the slower tracks more than the aggressive ones. Standouts are "Heart-Shaped Box", "Rape Me", and "All Apologies".
A bit more hard core than other Nirvana albums, but I still liked it and see its importance in the realm of music
Pure 90s
best songs: heart shaped box rape me dumb all apologies
Not as good as Nevermind but still great. Guitar riffs are still in full force and they are CATCHY. Lots more screaming from Kurt on here, which I don't like as much. Strong #2 album for Nirvana.
Good. Important. But not quite as good or as important as Nevermind. My notes for Nevermind more or less apply to this, as well, but less enthusiastically.
4.5/5. Now this is the good shit, rest easy Kurt. Grunge was short lived but remains an influential staple in rock music. Too melodic to stay underground yet too alternative to fit into the mainstream mould, the 90s were the perfect time for the genre to blow up.
I got this album the day it came out, which was about a month before I left for Canada. I probably listened to this album 100 times before I left. It is dripping with the feeling of 1993 and that time in my life. Beyond that, the album is a tight, sonic follow-up to what some thought could never be reproduced in Nirvana's initial venture. Absolutely fantastic. 4.5 stars.
Some album filler, but the highs of the album are perfect
I'm torn between the influence this album had on rock/grunge music at the time and my enjoyment of it today. Its raw, its beautiful, its noisy.
not nearly as good as nevermind, but still a very solid album. Heart shaped box is a classic song
Obviously heard this before. Some songs are a little intense.
1. Serve the Servants - God dammit Dave Grohl is a great drummer. And these drums sound great. 2. Scentless Apprentice - Some of the abrasiveness feels a little put on. Obviously Nirvana started as a punk band and that abrasion was always part of their sound, but this song feels like an attempt to weed out the people who bought Nevermind because it was catchy. Kurt Cobain’s skill, in his singing and his songwriting, was always the ability to meld grit and melody. This song is unusually averse to any kind of hook, and given how effortlessly hooks seemed to just appear in Nirvana’s music, it feels intentional. 3. Heart-Shaped Box - On a purely musical level, there’s so much bleakness in the verses of this song and the lyrics are so evocative. The arrangement feels like the next evolution of the Pixies-ish quiet verse/loud chorus thing that they made popular on Nevermind. 4. Rape Me - It’s still pretty fucking wild that the biggest band in the world had fairly popular song called Rape Me in 1993. Again, it’s that classic Nirvana thing of being an incredibly bleak song that’s also filled with hooks. And man, when Kurt repeatedly screams the title near the end of the song… the way that moment is mixed is so perfect, as if all of a sudden his voice is just directly in front of you and everything else has been pushed aside. Their personal lives aside, it feels kind of fitting that he and Courtney Love were together, because she’s the only other person I can think of who can scream full-out, and do so melodically. 5. France’s Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle - gotta circle back to this song, because there’s more here than I can digest in a single listen. 6. Dumb - Nirvana has two different songs where a cello is (arguably) the highlight. Isn’t that something? 7. Very Ape - this and Milk It are good, not great album tracks. Okay got tired of making song specific comments. This is a really good album. It feels like a reaction to the success of Nevermind in a way that’s a little forced and a bit… meta? But the peaks are era-defining and remain capable of packing an emotional punch that transcends the “importance” of this music to the broader pop culture landscape.
It's harder to listen to than Nevermind, but it's good. It's more on the post-hardcore side of grunge. I'm sure the Deftones heard this when they were young. Favorite song: radio friendly unit shifter.
Always a great listen. So different from their previous albums. The back story around it's creation is fun too.
Solid follow on from Nevermind. In places a little too abrasive for my tastes but overall still really liked it
Some great songs on this but also some awful noise
Alot grungier than nevermind in my opinion. This one has fewer big tracks than NM as well, still a fire project from the boys
I've never listened to most of the songs on this album before. I first heard Heart-Shaped Box outside at a party in junior high, thinking that I found Nirvana kinda ehhh, and I still remember hearing the chorus come in. It's funny that there's so much mystique about alternate mixes of this album. It sounds like a band making an admirable effort to do their thing under tremendous pressure. music: respected. (⌐■_■)
This is the Nirvana I’ve listened to the least. It rocks. It’s got some of their best melodic parts and some of their best unmelodic parts. A great final album, sucks there aren’t more.
Wow nirvana
Rape me
Excellent songs (minus Rape Me), good album. Not as good an album as Nevermind, but still fine work.
A ground breaking, excellent album! I haven’t listen to Nirvana in an extended setting since I was in high school because it largely sounds “adolescent” to me now, but revisiting In Utero, I really appreciated it as a solid album with excellent tracks.
Not an easy listen And that’s the point
It’s been a long, long time. Like everyone else my age, I got this when it came out. Don’t love it as much as Nevermind or Unplugged. But there’s some really good tracks. There’s a handful I still really love.
This album hasn't totally clicked for me yet unlike the prior one, but I still respect it and it's definitely really really good.
It is obvious right from the start that this group plays with a force, and passion.
Very iconic guitar riffs, with lots of good dynamic control. Lyrics are abstract but evocative. Lots of dissonance in each song, which can be unpleasant after a while. Heavy sound, which is not my fave. But that's a personal preference, not a comment on the quality of the music.
OMG yes!!!
Very good.
I owned this album, got it when it was released, and liked it very much. Some solid tracks on this one. I can imagine it was tough to write and record this in the wave of all the attention and everything that comes with it (not being snarky with that observation, I mean it), and given the context, I've always been impressed with this album.
Great album, a few classics
All in all the album is great, but not as good as Nevermind or Unplugged. Tourettes was a good one.
In my opinion, the best Nirvana album. Really enjoy the way the production gives more personality to the songs (although it does not give room to breathe to the bass). I would have rated it as a 5 star classic if not for a couple of lesser songs that alter the listening experience.
Kurt Cobain's voice & crunchy quiet-loud guitars feel like the audio equivalent of putting on a comfy thrift-shop knit sweater with worn-in holes for your thumbs.
Escuché Nevermind en bucle durante años, pero por algún motivo no sentí curiosidad por este y creo que es la primera vez que lo escucho con atención. Nirvana tenía algo que hacía que los temas se elevaran. 4/5.
CD
Really solid album, surprised how few songs I recognized. Seemed to be a recurring motif throughout the album which I always appreciate. Frances Farmer will have her revenge on Seattle gave me a good laugh because at 2:25 it sounds a lot like the end part of Kickapoo from Tenacious D
i didnt listen but ive listened 1000000 times
cranky and moody i love it
not too big on nirvana, great album and probably their best imo
HL: "All Apologies", "Heart Shaped Box", "Dumb", "Very Ape", "Scentless Apprentice" Nirvana #3-- not first listen probably my favourite Steve Albini-produced record, either because it's had years to grow on me, or that the other producers that were controversially hired to remix/fix the album maybe made it better...? Every time I hear one of the versions of "All Apologies" (between In Utero & Unplugged), I'm always sure that THAT's the definitive version. Today, I insist on the noisy, sludgy ending this one has. Note to self: The statistics from this website contradict an assumption I have about myself- that I don't like grunge.
Teilweise Schrabbelig und viel Gekreische
Sorry, but this album is not as good as „Nevermind“ - 4 stars
What’s the best way of following up an extremely successful record? Do something totally different! This record is way more raw and visceral. I honestly like it. It’s what Nirvana was meant to sound like.
Amazing.
Prefer The Boo Radleys. 4.0
I still like Nevermind better than In Utero.
I like it, it’s a bit rough in how it tries to be rough in a way that inspired other groups to build upon it, but I sure wish we could have seen what they would have developed like without Cobain’s death.
It doesn’t get much better than this. Some repetitive moments but besides that the writing and musicality is top tier. Nirvana is legendary for a reason
The edgy, screamy parts don’t hit for me but there are some amazing musical elements under the surface.
Classic Grunge. Great Album. There are better songs than those in this collection/album, but solid 4 stars
3-5-6
The sound of Nirvana. Another first time listening to the album. I have had different tracks before. I hear the angst in the songs. This is not meant for when you are in a good mood. This is not really my taste. I do appreciate the craftmanship, despite the attempt to make it seem like they don't care.
Intense, dark
k apparently every Nirvana song I knew was off of "Nevermind." So speaks well for them that a cold listen of their stuff was still good for me, most other grunge doesn't manage that.
Never mind is the classic, but this album carries a sophisticated leap for the band.
Very raw and intense. Some of the songs are incredible and a great listen while some others are almost too intense and almost brutal. All in all amazing album
Fucking awesome
No. 96/1001 Serve The Servants 4/5 Scentless Apprentice 2/5 Heart-Shaped Box 4/5 Rape Me 4/5 Frances Farmer 4/5 Dumb 4/5 Very Ape 4/5 Milk It 3/5 Pennyroyal Tea 4/5 Radio Friendly Unit Shifter 2/5 Tourette's 3/5 All Apologies 4/5 Average: 3,5 Definitley one of the heavier albums by Nirvana. I like the Unplugged Version of some of the songs better. Still a really good album, just goes to hard for my personal taste
Decent
Heart Shaped Box is one of my top songs, but I always listened to the cover of it. It was cool to listen what other songs came in the album!
I’d contend this is a grunge explainer. It has raw energy connecting it to punk but with gritty layers instead of stripped down speed like early punk. It brought back an excellent era in my Gen X memories. Happy to revisit this one.
Nirvana is not my favorite grunge band, and this is not my favorite Nirvana album. 3.5 stars
Still a great album even though a lot of the songs have been massively overplayed. I think bleach is still my favorite record of theirs.
I liked it though not as much as yesterdays. This album is great but also rough.
Heart-Shaped Box // Rape Me // Dumb //
Not aware about the album, but good to listen.
skipped 2/12 songs, not bad
Their third album and one of the more anticipated releases of my lifetime. How do you follow a masterpiece like Nevermind. You get darker, I guess. I’d give it 4.5 stars if I could.
7.5/10 Highlights: Heart Shaped Box Dumb All Apologies Rape Me
least fav of nirvana’s catalogue
Great album, love Nirvana
4/5
no complaints. crazy production. kurt was the goat.
Pretty damn good.
Ich dachte ich kenns aber dem war nicht so. Sehr harter Stoff, intens, erinnert mich an dad und ayleen im Sinne von aufgeben und sich der Lust hingeben. Würde mir schwer fallen das Album im Alltag zu hören.
Never really listened to Nirvana much, but I understood their appeal. After making myself sit through the whole album, I'm pleasantly surprised and might start delving into their music a little more. They definitely have their own very unique aesthetic that though isn't my absolute favorite, has it's own charm. 4/5 They also have a cool motion graphic visualizer ;)
Notable Songs: About a girl, Dumb
I think I’ll use this as a true benchmark 4 star album in this rating system. I may have given them out a little liberally early on. I’m a sucker for all early Nirvana and this one comes out hitting, production value is super high but I just can’t justify anything higher. 4.25/5
4 Feels too low but not quite a 5. Maybe 4.8
Oof difficult to judge - as it opens it contains all of the cliches I hate; screaming vocals, aimless guitar solos. Then Heart shaped box, rp me, all apologies are all time greats which I absolutely love. Plus the gall to call a song "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter" then the shouty one "tourettes" . overall not an album i'd own but can appreciate greatly. 3.8
Outstanding
Classic
This one is grunge in every sense of the word. I loved the gritty guitars and screaming vocals all over it. The lyrics are amazing too as expected. It may of dragged a tiny bit towards the middle, but this album is stellar.
This was a nostalgic listen. I was never the biggest Nirvana fan, but certainly enjoy listening to them when they come on. Album feels like a band maturing into their sound. Gives a glimpse of maybe what would have been.
Would have been 5 stars if they left Scentless Apprentice in the bin where it should be.
Listened a couple of times. Gets better each time
Enjoyed the singles and a few others. The screaming ones bugged me.
I never got into this one. It’s grungier than Nevermind, and darker. I enjoyed it this time round, but it’s not an easy listen. Made me think of the Manics ‘Holy Bible’ at several points - this one was released just a year earlier. Some highlights but not as complete as Nevermind.
At times brutal, messy, and self-indulgent. At others, brilliant. Nirvana tried to reject success and return to their live/punk/noisy roots, but the genius still shines through. Can't help wonder what Cobain's career trajectory would have looked like if he'd lived.
Found it difficult to listen to an album with “new ears” when I spun this all the time in high school. Has some great songs and not so great songs. Fun revisit to listen to. All Apologies, and Dumb are my favorites. I wonder how this album would be received if it came out today?
Already very familiar with most of this. While I enjoyed the non-hits on Nevermind, I find them considerably less appealing here. They’re not bad, but they don’t go anywhere that interesting to me. Cobain was a real master of catchy pop sensibility wrapped in an abrasive package. It was the right place and right time for them to explode, but maybe it wasn’t for the best that they did.
Some absolute crackers on there. Nailed the difficult third album
Probably a 5 if you were the right age at the right time. For me I like a lot of it but there's bits I don't and am overall not drawn to angst as a mainstay for my music listening.
Oh, shoot! I can't wait for their next album!
Such an iconic album. Not necessarily my personal favorite but so raw... not necessarily my personal favorite, but it's easy to appreciate why this album is so important
This is my first Nirvana album! I don’t think I’ve ever heard Nirvana before. Okay, I have, because everyone has. But I assume we’ll get Nevermind at some point. This is really good. Dark, stirring, very rough. Some incredible songs. Something about this just works, and grunge isn’t usually my thing. This has been Uninformed Reviews with Jacob! Thank you! Tune in next week. I like this nirvana band. 4/5
CD
Favourite songs: Heart-Shaped Box, All Apologies, Scentless Apprentice, Rape Me, Tourette's, Pennyroyal Tea, Very Ape, Serve the Servants Least favourite songs: Milk It 4/5
“All alone is all we are.” This album, while not being my favorite by Nirvana, is a haunting send-off for band—and more specifically, Kurt Cobain. It’s impossible to listen to it without the lens of Kurt’s suicide. The angst, loneliness, and frustration that pervaded their music comes through all the more-so on this record. There are some songs that I am not particularly fond of, but the great ones are some of Nirvana’s best. And while I find the song “Rape Me” to be difficult to listen to on pure subject-matter, its provocativeness was the point, and the message is clearly anti-rape. Overall, what I’ve always loved about Nirvana is that through all the noise and anger and aggression and screaming, Kurt really knew how to write a good song.
I've never listened to a Nirvana album before, which I can appreciate is odd because I am a big admirer of Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters. I really enjoyed this album, you can see some similarities between it and the Foo Fighters earlier albums. There were a couple of weaker tracks that took away some of the shine. I will definitely be listening to other Nirvana albums.
The true vision of Nirvana except for the songs where the label overruled Steve Albini's production. So angry!
Good.
This is probably my favorite grunge album. I was never really into grunge though.
Really Great stuff. Underrated.
I respect the abrasive sound on a lot of the songs and understand why they chose to go in that direction, but regardless isn’t my cup of tea so only about half the songs are ones I relisten to. But those songs I do relisten to are incredible. Rating: 4.3
Nirvana has never been my favorite, but I appreciate them more all the time.
Amazing album for sure. Bold, different, exciting. Favorite song(s) : All apologies & Heart-Shaoed Box
Un poco sobrevalorado pero tiene temazos y la voz de Kurt Cobain es otro rollo
Classic grunge, the album with all the songs I know on it. it's nostalgic, but the songs I hadn't heard were an interesting look into a band I never sought out.
Love it - a bit grungy
Really more of a 3.5 but rounded up cause the hits are still really good
Without a doubt a revolutionary album that created trends for decades to follow. Incredibly progressive experimentation with notes of Hardcore sprinkled all over. Favorite Song: Pennyroyal Tea Sleeper Hit: Tourette's Worst Song: Very Ape
Great album
See, this album was highly influential and has some of Nirvana's best songs, and yet I forgot how much of the rest of the album is kinda...missing that love
Great Classic Songs, Some lesser knowns were good but not quite the same
Takes me back to secondary school when this came out. I had it on clear 12 inch vinyl and wish I’d never sold it. I think my favourite album is Nevermind but there are some great tracks here and love the grainy scratchy sound
Not sure if I ever actually listened through this album before now which is a shame because it's a great album
Punk but smoothed out, a refined processed primal roar
MOST BABIES SMELL LIKE BUTTER!!! &…semen? When he screams, sometimes he sounds like he hog calling pigs in for supper. “Heart Shaped Box” is one of my favorite songs in this album, might be my favorite from Nirvana in general. GRAPE ME. The lyrics, “if you ever need anything please don’t hesitate to ask someone else first”, spoke to my soul. “Milk It” was insane stressful jumbled mess and I loved it. Sounded like Kurt had a calcium deficiency, poor guy was begging for some milk in multiple songs. “All Apologies” was a perfect song to come down to because I literally felt like I was on drugs listening to this. 8/10
Great album, super strange sounding but stays true to the genre that they helped create with Grunge. Standout tracks like heart shaped box and dumb are fun to listen to and all apologies feels like he's saying sorry to the people who are gonna hate this album. Can't help but turn my brain into banana mush when all apologies is ending with his rambling. 7/10
Did you know that Kurt Cobain killed Dave Grohl and has been disguised as Dave Grohl for nearly 30 years? Scentless Apprentice - Mic peeking the song. Meat Eating Orchids is such a grunge phrase. Heart Shaped Box is the best song on the album easily. The songs where he is more soft sung and not angry yelling are much better. Very Ape is a certified banger. DOLL STEAK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh cool a song about Milk, oh god…. I’m anemic royalty. l think I could taste the heroine from listening to Radio-Friendly unit shifter. The tonal whiplash from going from melancholic bangers to deranged bestial roaring is immense. This was a stressful album to listen to. 8/10
9/10
Great album
Not my favourite Nirvana album but still a classic!
7/10
Classic
So edgy. Thirty years ago, I was too young for Nirvana. That isn't too say that there weren't people in my class at school who genuinely shed tears on finding out Cobain's death. But I was not struck by their brand of angsty grunge. Now, I am too old for Nirvana. I understand their almost singlehanded creation of a new genre, I understand Cobain's now almost trite tortured genius. But I cannot get into the angst. Grunge as a style, ethos or musical expression can never really go further than the perfection of Seth Green - both from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Austin Powers. It as much of a pastiche as hippy and as ironically un-self-aware as the post-Britpop bilge of the early 2000s Grunge is often held up as a point delineating Gen X from the Millennials - but we Xers had another half a decade past grunge, encompassing trip-hop, gangsta rap, rave, britpop, garage, funky house and - yes, I'm going to call it - everything up until the Spice Girls. Nirvana gave us a pause and a reset between the 80s and 90s but it is no more than a chapter within Gen X. It is an important album, but not one that I personally enjoy.
Fort bien.
Damn it's so fucking good isn't it. It's just so tight and thick and warm. I hadn't listened to some of these songs for a long time but going back you realise why they're world legends
was excited to listen to this the whole way through for the first time!
Pretty cool I liked the part where Kurt is sad and angsty
"Rape Me" and "HSB" are still all-time bangers ^w^
Has some great songs
nice song titles
I like me some Dave Grohl.
This is a good album for me. I dont love every song but the ones I do hold a special place in my heart. Kurt singing r*** me for 2.5 minutes is... something
Kurt tried hard to get all the darkness out but it just kept getting deeper. Really like dumb and Grohl's drums. I'm definitely not grunge generation, but I can admire this for its moments of utter darkness from a mind in pain, and Dave Grohl's drums, and a few lyrical riffs. It seemed obvious that the vocals were set down separately--several jugernauts in tandem, occasionally crashing together. It was okay to sing about ghastly rather than to milk the listener for sympathy. It certainly changed entertainment.
Was a decent album will have to look at more Birvana
With the presence of some absolutely genre-expanding ballads, this album was as magical as it could have been with where Cobain was heading. The other tracks are hard rock pincers, the singles were selected for a reason. This is a special band, with an excellent album, just not their best. Heart shaped and all apologies are premier.
the worst nirvana album. heart shaped box, dumb, all apologies
The lyrics are meaningful and I respect Kurt's message, even if grunge isn't that great.
4.5 litt for mye grunge
Imagine swallowing four gold coins and then looking at your shit a day later. This is in utero. Four great songs: rape me, heart shaped box, dumb, all apologies, the rest: lazy noise punk songs and ca ca
some classics, some sleepers, some damn terrible songs
No doubt some L parts of this album, but the parts that hit, hit hard.
The singles are great! But that's not really fair since they were produced after the fact to make the album sell more. It's not often an artist get free rein to make their followup album but in this case they did, and it falls flat. Those singles carry it, however.
I like the edgier noisier stuff on this album but it still suffers a bit from what never mind does which is repetitive, simplistic and predictable songs. That's probably the appeal to many but I prefer when They get a bit weirder on this one and I think bleach is probably my favourite nirvana album. 7/10 rounded up to 4 stars
A distinguished record.
Awesome <3. First song at the time was too agresive for me, but the rest are great. Love "heart-shaped box" and "rape me".
I dunno how to word it, but it's more raw and slick than "Nevermind" and I love it.
Fantastic albym
I bounce back and forth between this and Nevermind being my top Nirvana album. Each offer different experiences but I'm not sure which experience is preferred. One thing I am sure of though is that it's definitely not Bleach. In Utero, however has a distinctly raw sound compared to their prior two. There's anger and fear which are absolutely palpable. Dave's drumming is more aggressive and it almost seems like the band has more to say this time around. I think of this as Nirvana's "Daisy". It's so angy that it's almost cathartic to listen to. It may not have the starpower that Nevermind does but damn it's just as good. 4.5
Maybe I’m dumb but I’m not going to rape him or eat his cancer.
There are moments in the album that are a lot heavier on the grunge than others. I didn't particularly enjoy those. But still many old favorites. 4.5
“teenage angst has paid off well”. this is the opening line of this album and from the gate you are punched in the face with kurt’s self deprecating humour. this album had a dark mood around it and you could tell the spotlight was taking its toll on the frontman. “i miss the comfort in being sad” a recurring line in one of the songs. this is my favourite nirvana studio album, as it exudes everything that nirvana was. heavy guitars, dark lyrics, loud drums, and a certain self awareness. it was also their final studio album as kurt cobain was found dead of a self inflicted shotgun wound in april 1994. r.i.p. kurt. highlights: “scentless apprentice”, “rape me”, “frances farmer will have her revenge on seattle”, “pennyroyal tea”, “all apologies”.
Solid from Nirvana. Not a 5... but good.
Pretty much what you would expect in a grunge album.
definitely the most divisive nirvana album. but also definitely my favourite. i also definitely have enough teenage angst to connect with it. fav songs: scentless apprentice, radio friendly unit shifter, dumb
Fuck yeah, that was exactly what I needed to hear on Monday's afternoon.
How do you follow one of the biggest albums of all time? With a raw as fuck angst-fuelled punk record I guess - and it works. There are a couple of tracks on here that don’t do it quite so much for me, but the aggressive production works so well as songs like Scentless Apprentice and Tourettes burst into life with so much energy, while gentler cuts like Dumb, Pennyroyal Tea and the incredible closer All Apologies add even more depth to Nirvana’s upsettingly short yet illustrious catalogue
I was familiar with several of the songs. However, there were a couple of songs that are not good. Mainly the screaming ones. Nevermind is a better album. This album is better than a 3. It is not really a 4 but I will round up.
Brilliant talent, great album.
Confession, never have I ever listened to Nirvana Not bad, rock alt vibe for this one. Some hit, some were not my style
4.25
ahhh the 90s....I'm stuck in high school for the duration of this one. We played this shit OUT. I like Nevermind a lot more but this still has some good shit on it.
I guess I like Nirvana a lot more than I used to.
Un album échevelé, qui explore et n'essaie pas de plaire – peut-être parfois veut un peu trop le contraire
As good a follow up to Nevermind as one could have expected. But Nevermind aside, this is a very good album by its own rights. I don’t think it held the the test of time as well, but it’s not short on quality nor hit tracks.
A necessary noise back in the days. Importantly, with no intention of stomping on the 80s. Who´s gonna wonder at that time it´d hit high at the charts.
I was never a big Nirvana fan but this was pretty good.
This album is somewhat hit-and-miss for me, but the hits outweigh the rest. Best track: All Apologies
I'm kind of surprised that I had never listened to this album before. I was a BIG fan of Nirvana up to Nevermind. Then my first child was born and music took a back seat for a few years. I knew this album had come out, but I thought it was some sort of acoustic rehash of earlier material or a put-together mash up of unreleased studio outtakes. Imagine my surprise and delight to realise it was neither of these, but an actual album that I had somehow missed. However, although it's a good album, these aren't my favourite Nirvana songs and there's a few meh tracks stuck in here and there among the better ones. A lot of people bang on about how much they liked the direction Nirvana were taking, but for my money they did one really good first album and then never managed to achieve the same heights in their later work.
Was one of the first Nirvana album I brought on vinyl, a great album with many memorable songs and a banging cover.
Stone cold classic
Just a year before Kurt Cobain's tragic demise, this raw and emotionally charged record serves as a profound testament to the band's artistic depth and Cobain's tortured genius. I have been openly critical about this album on the Reddit page but I must put my pride to the side and realise the quality of this record. The purunpolished production, courtesy of Steve Albini, captures the raw power and edginess that the band was clearly targeting for this album. Each instrument roars with unbridled fury, creating an atmosphere that is simultaneously abrasive and captivating. "In Utero" showcases Nirvana's fearless approach to songwriting. Cobain's introspective and often cryptic lyrics delve into themes of disillusionment, alienation, and existential anguish. Songs like "Heart-Shaped Box" and "Rape Me" showcase his ability to infuse deeply personal emotions into powerful and catchy melodies. Rather than creating another commercial success like its predecessor "Nevermind," Nirvana opted for a raw and uncompromising sound. Tracks like "Milk It" and "Scentless Apprentice" exhibit the band's willingness to experiment with dissonance and noise, pushing the boundaries of alternative rock and grunge. This is something that I have learnt to appreciate about the album and whilst it’s not as crisp and perfected like ”Nevermind”, I really enjoy this album’s purpose. ”In Utero” might not be perfect but it’s distinct place as it’s own identity and sound makes it quite a listen.
great record
Always wanted to listen to a Nirvana album but never got around to it. Heart-Shaped Box is a classic, so damn good. Another song I like was Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle, I put as good as Heart-Shaped Box. All Apologies was a relaxing ender to the album.
Some great tracks, but too transgressive at times.
grunge. PÖÖ!! noh uteruksessa ollaan ja fiilikset on hyvät..This is the best of it's genre. totta tuo lause ja ei ole vitonen heh tosiaan muutama hyvä biisi ja muutama meediumi, meediumi tyyppinen biisinräipäle. etenkin populääri viisut oli tällä kertaa heikon luokkaa ja vähemmän kuunnellut (vaikka silti valtavirta paskaa PASKAA! huono jos enemmän ihmisiä kuuntelee) oli parempia tällä kertaa noin radio friendly unit shifter (vähiten kuunneltu spotifyssä JES JES JES JES!!! )
The best of the three Nirvana albums. But where the anger was replaced with more cynical self loathing, the music made a step forward.
Not my favorite N album, Bleach is, but after having not listened to this in a while, like 15 years, it's still fresh and innovative. The re-listen improved my opinion of this record
Favorite track: All apologies.
I forgot how cold this album is. Like, chilly...
I've noted in previous reviews I came around on Nirvana after being initially dismissive. This is very good, although my appetite for the depressive affect is considerably diminished from my younger days.
Yupp
This album will always live in the shadow of Nevermind, but it deserves to be judged on its own merits. It is a good bit more abrasive than its predecessor, which to me signifies that the band were unwilling to compromise in the face of enormous media and public attention. It is as much an “authentic” album as Bleach is.
Was not my taste immediately but I will listen to it again. It might grow on me
