Reviews (page 6 of 8)
Just background music really. Nothing stood out; nothing grabbed my attention. A bit too mellow and beige for me perhaps?
Very relaxing and enjoyable
Nice background music, certainly from it's time. I liked it but nothing of it was too memorable.
It’s a relaxing little indie album. I enjoyed the strings and horns of The Shining and the loveliness of Magic in the Air. The rest of the album was meh. 3 stars.
Not for me. First song was good but then mushed into nothingness
YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO KONSEPTI!!! KONSEPTI! ALARAM!! ALARAM!! ALARAM!!! Super ass cover helt chill albym
Not my vibe, but still enjoyable.
Good
Good variety of intelligent pop and camp fire strumming. Disillusion and Once Around The Block are strong. "Have You Fed The Fish" album is slightly more concise and better still.
3.5
Nice album, but nothing much.
I didn’t really enjoy this music, but i think it’s a thoughtfully made record. Interesting compositions and orchestration, and I like the intro and outro. Not really into the vocals. Favorite song was another pearl, Really cool drums and guitar and a nice groove.
First listen
Eighteen songs. Nine of which I absolutely loved. Nine that I hate with the white hot intensity of a thousand suns. This album's opening track is in the running for worst "Side 1, Track 1" of all-time. How bad is it? It almost made me stop listening altogether. This album is just a little too ambitious for its own good. Tighten things up and lose those 9 disastrous songs and we're all singing a different tune here.
I think this album needs more listen to get into it. It is a consistent and unique sounding indie/indie folk rock album.
This sounds like the kind of thing my friends would have gone apeshit for in our 20s, while I was scratching my head and wondering what was special about it.
Never heard this. It’s real pretty. And unique for an album sandwiched in between centuries. I dig it.
A quirky little album with some catchy tunes and dreamy production, but nothing too impressive or memorable
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it? : yeah, did have some decent parts which were soothing. Favourite song: Track 3 - Bewilder
Meh - I can think of some albums outside of this 1001 that should take its place, but I respect BDB even if I don't agree this release belongs on this list.
I bought this album back in 2000, but rarely listened to it. However, my 40-year old self is much more receptive than my 18-year old self was. A lovely, gently, atmospheric, album. It's very of its time and place but remains enjoyable today. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Once Around the Block Date listened: 13/01/23
Rating: 6/10
Enjoyable to listen to, but not entirely memorable. I wouldn't turn it off if it came on the radio/playlist, but I wouldn't actively reach for it.
Heard this album just a couple of weeks ago, and mostly thought it was underwhelming. Listening to it again today, I am coming around to it. There are 2-3 really great songs, and the more I listen to the rest, the more I am liking it. I think my first reaction was that this was maybe a 2/5, I'll go up to 3/5 for now, but I think I'll soon be adding this one to the "glad it was on the list" list. :)
I don't think I've ever heard of Badly Drawn Boy before. I thought this album was pretty good. I liked the vocals and lyrics; they reminded me of the things that I like about bands like Death Cab for Cutie and Wilco. Even though I thought this album was pretty good, I'm not sure that I get why it was on the 1001 albums list. It was pleasant to listen to, but nothing was particularly memorable about it, and nothing about it really stood out to me.
I liked the quirkiness
HAPPY BUT FORGETABLE - caps
Good album with lots of recognizable songs, not sure I would listen again
I had never heard of this album or this band before, but this is quite good. A good comp would be "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot", and it stacks up reasonably well against that, although not quite as strong (high bar). But as creepy, dark, sad, somewhat folky indie rock goes it's up there with the best of them. I'm a sucker for albums with instrumental interludes too. It's a little low-energy relative to some others in the style, and the 2nd half starts to drag a bit, and it doesn't have the same caliber of hits as a YHF / 13 Tales / Yoshimi, but still very enjoyable.
Neat (very) 90s album. 3.0 - some tracks are too long and I don’t care for how a few sound.
I have great memories of listening to “The Shining” in university. That was definitely the stand-out track for me, but the rest of the album was nice too.
Partially listened
Massive yet easy to digest. Perhaps because it sounds cheaper than it should be. Or because it's overlong. Or because it's kinda bland in most places. I don't know exactly, but I do love some indie folk rock nonetheless.
it was fine.
Interesting album. Very indie feel to it
Stream of consciousness listening thoughts: Wow, I have seriously been sleeping on early 2000s indie! First few tracks are wonderful. For me, this is something I would listen to more at night to relax because there are a lot of downtempo songs and instrumentals. Love the vibe! Update 13 songs in: this album is starting to overstay its welcome a bit. It's getting a bit too repetitive and the singer's voice is starting to grate...
When this popped up, I assumed it was some shitty emo band from roughly 20 years ago--but turns out it's an Indie chamber pop artist from England from roughly 20 years ago. This was better than I expected it would be. I don't usually go for the very polished bedroom DIY sounding chamber stuff, but this has it's moments, and has enough similarities to things I liked back then. There is a good chance that I would have loved this album when it came out if I had heard it.
Fine I guess
This was new. Kind of a trippy vibe - very late 90s.
I once spent an hour in the company of a wildebeest named Tall Mike. He chewed my ear off about the difficulties wildebeests faced when trying to complete their tax returns. He really did not enjoy the whole process and was keen to let me know. I didn't care though, because I'm not a wildebeest, I'm a big man-legend named Nigel. I wished him well and took a huge bite out of an apple I'd been saving for such an occasion. Tall Mike smiled, did a line of ketamine and swam away singing.
SHACK is typing...
Never of this artist before. Reading about it, it's another one that should be in my wheelhouse since it's indie folk but it was just long and bland. What a shame since it felt like it could have been amazing. 2.5/5
Interesting and different. Like the mix of styles. Overall good album.
This is the 2000 Mercury Prize winning debut album by British musician Badly Drawn Boy aka Damon Gough. This indie rock album was released to widespread critical acclaim and has been well received by listeners. It's a roller coaster of emotions on this album and the music moves you through the twists and turns. I enjoyed this album, but I didn't like it as much as the critics did.
Seems to be an indie darling, but it felt a bit all over the place. Some songs I definitely liked, others I was like "nope". A tad bit too long for me, was about ready to be done by track 14. There are interesting instrumental flourishes and it has grand ideas, but beyond that it didn't gel a ton with me. I can understand why people would really like it though, it definitely is no slouch.
This album is clearly quite polarising, looking at the global reviews and critical reception. There's so much I find to love in this album but there are certainly more fillerish tracks I like less in there. The overall feeling I get from it is calm beauty with an undercurrent of darkness. I really like the feeling and it reminds me of Nick Drake in places. I love the opening track, The Shining with its strings and horns, and instrumental tracks like Bewilderbeast which is a cool title! I can really see that if I'd listened to this album in the 2000s I'd have a lot of nostalgia around it. Since I don't have that, the album doesn't quite make a 4 for me but nearly!
I didn't love this, but I didn't hate it either. The genre flew around a lot. Although I have no idea who Badly Drawn Boy is I feel like I can imagine exactly what he's like and I don't like him.
Honestly, its better than I expected but I don't think this reaches the heights of Elliot Smith or projects higher than many other indie artists of the day. Enjoyable for what it is though.
Not that great. Not terrible. Pleasant enough. At time lame. 2.5 and rounding up because I’m in a good mood.
Pretty decent. I don't think it's an album that everyone needs to hear, though
interesting instrumentals. the vocals i could do without. 3.
Had its moments. About 3-stars worth of them I guess.
Good fun time but some of songs are super annoying. One of them made me believing that my headphones were going in and out. There were lot of unique sound that made me think I was exploring wilderness like the rocks slide song
yeah it's alright
I have never heard of Badly Drawn Boy. After listening to the album named "The Hour Of Bewilderbeast" I am not surprised. This is an incredibly average record, the songs on it are really okay, entertaining to a point, but certainly not anything that should be placed on the list of best albums. The songs seems to be a one man army, with everything being done by a one person. Usually it's an acoustic guitar with some accompaniment from different instruments and a pretty nice vocal. My only question is - how is it in any way new or exceptional? After listening to the album twice my answer is "no idea". And it probably will stay this way.
Very much in the vein of Eels, Elliot Smith, and Bright Eyes, and maybe even The Beta Band or Grandaddy. I didn't find it as good as any of those bands tbqh, but it's still listenable and the lyrics are earnest.
Was fine. Liked a few songs but disappointed that it isn’t the album I remember finding as like a 6th grader that had vaguely similar cover art
An album that sounds like it came out a few years too late to be included on the “Good Will Hunting” soundtrack. It’s a decent chill listen, with some variety in song energy and vibe. Worth a listen if you’re living an early 2000s dramedy life or looking for a nice way to chill out any given evening.
I saw BDB live following the About a Boy release. My main memory was what a bad tempered arsehole he was. 18 years on i appreciate this more. I do think that less would be more. Running over an hour is impressive but stretching the patience. However the texture of the songs do vary. 3 5
Indie británico. Bastantes canciones un poco sosas... Ni fu ni fa.
Haven't listened to this in a long time. It's good, I was blown away
Eh. Fine, but not doing much for me. Kinda relaxed, noodly sound, whereas I tend to go for catchy hooks and big climaxes. The actual song Bewilderbeast has a good hook. Liked it more as I got into it.
Not bad
Pleasantly surprised. A nice 90’s feel; the album really flows well.
Okay album, a bit too mocht filter to my taste. Stone on the water is genuinly great.
Good music but unmemorable
sounds like a less sad Elliot Smith
I like this one. I feel like I've heard of this artist, and the opening track sounds very familiar too. I swear it was in a Wes Anderson movie or something, but the closest thing I think I may have watched with that song is some weird teen rom-com movie with Kirsten Dunst. Anyway, decent level of variety to these tracks, nothing too crazy that I loved, but a few tracks to take with me. Another one I had heard before on an XL Recordings compilation. Not bad! Favorite tracks: The Shining, Cause a Rockslide, Once Around the Block. Album art: Really like this one, pretty colorful and creative. A freakish voodoo doll looking thing, is this the badly drawn boy or the bewilderbeast I'm looking at? 3/5
Pleasant suprise. Impressive and interesting that it was made by one guy. Feels both DIY and homemade, but also well-produced. Modern version of a 60/70s album in design. Not particularly catchy and no stand out tracks except for the wonky pop hit "Once Around the Block'. All songs provide nice vibes. No real desire to listen again however some songs may bare repeating. They may be an entrance to listening to the rest again if the voice becomes more agreeable to me. May be a grower.
Monique = 4. Ben = 2. “I thought that album was absolutely death to listen to,” - Ben.
Unusual and kind of cool. It could grow on me if I listened to it a few more times. Favorite songs: Another Pearl, Magic in the Air, Say It Again I would have liked This Song better without the annoying reverberation.
Better than I expected, but not the best.
I’m surprised by how much I enjoyed this. Catchy tunes with interesting instrumentation.
Not to bad of an album, very relaxing and laidback
Meh
Very Elliot smith which is a good thing
Badly Drawn on Sloppily Drawn? It's kinda funny how older artists dance around modesty in comparison to today. "Are you a great artist...?" "Who? Me? Oh, no not me? I'm 'BADLY DRAWN'" Now we listen to people who call themselves "Perfume Genius." Anyhow, Nic Harcourt used to spend tons of KCRW airtime on this album. At the time I wasn't too excited about it, after all he introduced me to the Gotan Project and Cornershop, two total shit albums that diminished my trust in his music pics. Happily enough, listening to it now with fresh ears is relatively pleasant. I enjoyed the first song, The Shining. I enjoyed the second track, Everybody's Talking and ready to give this a respectable review... But then, as we proceed down an excessively long track listing we hit some bumps, some errors and by the time we get to track 14, Pissing in the Wind we fall apart. The rest of the album is in freefall. Editing is a valuable skill, Mr. Sloppy Pants. Track 16, Disillusion, sounds like a Barry Manilow song performed on Loveboat. Sorry, but you can't be respectable if you're trying to imitate Barry Manilow. Top few tracks are strong, but have to deduct some serious points for not knowing when to stop.
I want to like Badly Drawn Boy more than I actually do. He is a talented musician working in a singer-songwriter style that I enjoy, but I found "The Hour of Bewilderbeast" to be largely forgettable. After this Mercury Prize-winning debut and his "About a Boy" soundtrack, I think his visibility in America pretty much disappeared. Through it all, though, I think he kept the beanie on. I can't find any pictures of him without one. And if that speaks to one thing about Badly Drawn Boy, its consistency. Gotta give that to him at least.
Great artist. Not my style.
First time listening, thought it was pretty solid.
Kind of like nick drake with a less appealing voice. Was ok
I didn't really understand the fuss about Badly Drawn Boy in the 1990s, and I still don't. The standout track for me was Another Pearl. Disillusion wasn't bad - I seem to remember it being a single. It's not that it's bad, it just doesn't provoke a reaction from me either way.
I had this album when it came out, and had been excited about it since Psyence Fiction. It is definitely an album full of charm, with lovely little surprises hidden throughout. It's also overlong, with a lot of filler on it. Had this been trimmed down to a lean 40 minutes, I think it'd be better - but conversely, you could lose some of the offer lovelier bits, like the intro to the Shining. It's a frustrating conundrum of an album, which makes sense, as he had a frustrating conundrum of a career.
I missed this at the time because of all the Mercury hype. I was a little suspicious of the industry back slapping and wanted to listen to it objectively. I never really got round to this until today. It's around thirty minutes too long, but is still decent. It's impossible to classify this a genre. I think BDB is a bit of a prankster like that. An impressive debut.
I usually like a whiney boy singing but this album left me trying to connect with something. Maybe it needs a few more listens but I was a bit underwhelmed
I thought I was enjoying the first song or two, then I blinked and almost the whole album was gone and I couldn't remember any of it.
Easy to listen to. Lots of Travis in them. Nothing too offensive, nor too memorable.
I absolutely love the opening... the feel of both The Shining and Everybody's Stalking is fantastic. I really enjoy Damon's voice and writing style... there's a nice folk warmth to the music. Still after the beginning, the album seems very long and not a lot of standouts... but still an enjoyable listen.
I liked this, but I think 3 or 4 songs should have been left on the cutting room floor. Pulls it down from a 4 for that.
i enjoyed the vibe of this album however i thought sometimes his voice was a tad whiny? i also thought the album was like 17 minutes too long. but i did think the music was enjoyable.
I recognise the album cover but nothing else is familiar… The album starts off on a slow kind of a slow waking up tone with the shining it slowly builds up into just stopping and a completely different acoustic track comes up it’s okay strange lyrics but good song. The song flows perfectly into everybody’s stalking a more traditional rock sounding song it’s good but not in the top rock songs of all time. Bewilder is just a small interlude don’t love it don’t hate it. Fall in the river is a rather “ rusty” sounding track it’s got great guitars one strumming one picking. The only problem is it’s just one verse. Then some weird in water bit. Camping next to water is a more subtle song it’s got good lyrics and I like the way the instruments kinda spiral round his voice to act as a chorus without really building up anything. Stone on the water has a cool intro slowly building up like the first song did this time to actually form a song of itself it’s an alright song but it takes so long to get there that it’s not worth it. Another pearl is a more pop/rock song now this is amazing, at this point I was honestly getting bored with the album but this is redemption! Body rap is a rather cool funky interlude. Theres a slight wah wah sounding thing on once around the block that makes it sound pretty cool and there’s a break where you can hear crackle noises it’s a really well made song. This song is a short song a happy song a good song that turns into quite a distorted 60’s sounding song at the end of the song. Bewilderbeast is a good but rather long instrumental to be fair i’am not a huge instrumental’s fan so this isn’t really my kinda thing. Magic in the air has a great piano/ acoustic guitar combo at the start which makes it sound almost fantasy like then it only focuses on the piano for the rest of the song which is unique for this album probably a favourite. Cause a rockslide is a rockier track really well made the only thing is i’am not a fan of the supporting chords guitar that only plays in one ear. The rest of it’s good though. Until the spooky instrumental that takes up the back half of the song not good even when there’s the acoustic bit at the end! I’am sorry but any song called pissing in the wind is gonna be stupid. Well a bit at least it’s a very oddly upbeat yet gloomy track and it probably would’ve worked better as a shorter song as this just drags by a good minute . Blistered heart is a nice enough instrumental but it’s so useless. Disillusion is rather upbeat and a good choice for a single very upbeat and poppy for this album it’s really enjoyable a good surprise. The penultimate track say it again is gloomy and slow like being stuck in some spooky forest blended with a classic folk sounding song honestly a surprise. The album closes off with epitaph a decent closer that sounds like he’s out in the forest with the birds singing not a favourite but I like it. This is one of those albums where for the most part the singles are really the best songs for me it’s a well formed album but just too long and too instrumental.
Some interesting songs and arrangement. Some parts a little meh.
Just okay. Melancholy at times
I want to like it more than I do
This is terribly 2000. I like some of it but it doesn't quite feel finished.
3/5. Some was nice, but overall I didn't really care for it. Sorta reminds me of more boring version of things like The Shins.
It was fine. Vocals are the greatest but some of the instrumentation is beautiful.
So this isn't super my thing, but there are some really cool little passages here, and I think his sense of melody is strong. It's a good time, but I'd be lying if I said that I see this becoming a Mountain Goats-level favorite. C
Enjoyable enough.
This was surprisingly enjoyable considering my very low expectations. It's a little bloated though; if they had trimmed some of the more egregious hipster indie bullshit it could have easily gotten a 4.
Pretty good! Reminds me of Beck a lot. Not too much to say, except that I had never heard of this guy, but I'm going to add a few songs from the album to my spotify (though not the whole album)
I’d never heard of this artist before so I didn’t know what to expect. It was more pleasant than I thought it would be. The album could use some editing though.
Oh man, a wave of nostalgia here. I don't actually know much off this specific album but I loved BDB back in the day. Excited for this. Shining -- I loved this song, and it seems I still do Everybody's Stalking -- Cool psychedelic mystery vibes Bewilder -- Fall in a River -- A weaker one Camping Next to Water -- Liking this one again Stone on the Water -- One I liked back in the day, and still do Another Pearl -- Not a highlight, but alright Body Rap -- This is...not a good song Once Around the Block -- This one's better at least This Song -- Not in love with this one Bewilderbeast -- A pleasant song, though a bit bland...nice though Magic in the Air -- another meh song Cause a Rockslide -- Liking this one more though except this ending Pissing in the Wind -- decent one Blistered Heart -- pleasant Disillusion -- Kind of diffrernt, in a good way Say it Again -- Like this one too, a bit Beatles-y Epitaph -- Basically, not as good as I'd hoped; too much filler. But you can hear the seeds of what made some of his other stuff so good; and the Shining just absolutely kills
Pretty good.
I had no idea about this album. It was an interesting ride. There was a great variety of sounds here and it'll take some more listening to really get a feel for it.
I have this album. Good listening but nothing really special.
Good variety and there's a certain "je ne c'est quoi" with the music that's so pleasing for me -- like round tones or clean sound or something I can't put my finger on!
I like "Something to Talk About" better as an album. A lot of songs in here were slow and plodding. But I still gave it a 3 because it was pleasant. The "chopper sound like a window is half open in the car" song almost dropped it to a 1.
Got its moments 3
Thought this was going to be really intense because it has a pre-tense of a hardcore metal album but was pleasantly surprised. Definitely would like to revisit this one
Prachtige bandnaam.
Ok, wasn't mad on it.
What even is a bewilderbeast?
This album has a gentle, easiness as it unfolds into a thoughtful singer-songwriter effort. What may be lacking from a larger group effort isn't missed as this easily serves as a contemplative work; ideal for a cool morning.
Average
Peaceful, charming
There’s quite a lot going on here. I hear orchestral pop, folk rock, country, electronics, Britpop, and jazz but it doesn’t exactly sound like a blend. It sounds like a jumble of musical references that don’t really create something new. The songwriting is a bit lazy with quite a few lines sounding like they were written to preserve a rhyme. It’s not offensive, but it’s just trying sound more forward thinking than it actually is.
kinda cool
Interesting sounds. Loved the orchestrations. Great for a mellow day.
Nice and mellow
good length. great songs. living for the city and higher ground are obvs the best
Eh
This is an album with music on it. It is divided by tracks that also as well are surely songs.
Pretty good 2000's era "indie" record. Some enjoyable songs but I find this style/genre kind of boring and forgettable for whatever reason. But I can definitely see why this would be a popular record.
This was good but unremarkable to me. I can't see myself seeking it out to listen to again. None of the songs truly caught me.
Enough variety for a 3.5
Gentle plinky plonk British 90's pretentiousness. Perfectly lovely way to pass an hour. Had to pass another hour as each tune had completely passed me by. Will I listen again? Pass.
6/10
This is very easy to listen to, very 90s feel. This is easy to have on in the background when working. This Song sounds like something that would play in a coffee shop.
Not bad.
Weirder than expected, but in a good way
Just to be clear, this album is a clearly perfect 3.5 to me, so whether I give it a 3 or 4, neither will be quite right. I enjoyed listening to this one, and I even wanted to keep listening when I had to take a break. But then when I resumed it did go on a long time and I got a bit weary by the end. And then when I went back to the beginning, I really liked it again, but didn't feel the need to listen to everything all the way through again. So nice to hear such interesting uses of varied musical instruments. I liked "The Shining" with the cello and French horn and acoustic guitar and mellow singing voice singing about the sunshine. "Fall in a River" was kind of cool when it, well, fell in the river. I liked "Once Around the Block" and "Bewilderbeast." By the last 20 minutes of the album, though, I enjoyed it well enough, but it was well enough. Lovely album, thank you.
Quite a dreamy alternative album. There was a gamut of instruments throughout the production which kept things fresh and interesting. Best: Pissing in the Wind Worst: Be Wilder
Overly long. Love Damon Gough's voice and sensibilities, but should have been half the length
band has some range, took a little bit to warm up to it. Doubt I'll listen to it again but would be open to other albums. 3+
I’m always torn with Badly Drawn Boy. I want to love it but I just can’t seem to grasp where he’s coming from. I think if I had have been into it when it was first released that might have changed things but for now I just dang see myself returning to this too often.
Once Around the Block is a beautiful, beautiful track. Unfortunately, the rest of the album doesn’t thrill. The extended instrumental interludes are a little wearing and the overall impact is that the album becomes a little repetitive. There are other albums of this era and genre I would reach for over this one, and it’s a shame because Damon is clearly a talented guy.
just does nothing to stand out. 2.6
Mellow indie folk, though fairly nondescript.
It was alright as background music but I wasn’t a massive fan. 3*
Fine background music.
Very good, even if I rarely play it these days.
-A lot of it seems like it has cool instruments and effects, but its just relatively low energy and I just don't get excited about it. -"Cause A Rockslide" is probably my favorite track. It has a good groove, and then there is a big explosion and a cool breakdown -"Disillusion" has a decent amount of groove and I like the piano and guitar
Lovely wee album
De hit zit in "Stone on the Water".
Beetje indie, beetje andere invloeden.
not bad not bad at all. cool album cover
The shining is boring. Everybody’s Stalking is a BOP!!11!”” Stone on the water is nice, but I mean come on, it’s literally just 2 chords for half the song. Is this part of a dare to see how long people will listen? Didn’t like Another Pearl or Body Rap... but Cause a Rockslide was worthy of a better rating than this album as a whole. Pissing in the wind is such a mood. Just give me something/I’ll take nothing😳 Overall, I think it will improve on a second listen. I applaud it for having really good bits and a high ambition, while not shying away from doing some less poppy, weirder stuff.
Fairly nice indie pop
Better than expected album from a name I haven’t heard before. It has a 90s feel to it which I like. It’s chill and transitions smoothly. Some songs are a little weird lyrically. 7.4/10
Didn’t listen to full albums. Still good.
More enjoyable than I expected, enjoyed some songs (and the video to Once Around the Block). Nothing spectacular. A solid 2.5er.
Not really my kind of sound, but very well put together album with a tonally consistent sound :)
Quirky but charming.
3* - pretty much exactly what I expected. Some gems but too long.
Good album and definitely could see chilling out to it again but I don't see what makes a one of the greatest albums similarly to the last one I listened to by Le Tigre 1) The Shining 4* 2) Everybody's Stalking 3* 3) Bewilder 3* short accordion song not bad but just a segue 4) Fall In A River 3* 5) Camping Next To Water 4* 6) Stone On The Water 4* 7) Another Pearl 3* 8) Body Rap 3* segue 9) Once Around The Block 3* 10) This Song 4* 11) Bewilderbeast 3* 12) Magic In The Air 3* 13) Cause a Rockslide 3* 14) Pissing In The Wind 3* 15) Blistered Heart 2* 16) Disillusion 4* 17) Say It Again 3* 18) Epitaph 3*
much better than expected. felt a lot like early 2000s indie rock i liked. glad i didnt skip it
I didn’t hate it.
Ok
Nice
I started listening and then before I knew it the album was over. It seemed like one long song to me. I will listen again. I give it three Rip Van Winkles
Started solid, but all began to blend together
Overall enjoyable, not super interesting
Some really good stuff. Need to come back to it.
This album art is like a disturbing Vitruvian man? All in all it was fine, none of the songs really did it for me but it was nice and chill
At least 2 absolute Yossis, in Disillusion and Once Around the Block.
3.4 - It's got that turn-of-the-millenium earnest, bedroom-recorded, DIY vibe to it. Given the timing of its release, this album was probably ahead of the Brooklyn-centric zeitgeist of that same sound. At this point, I've listened to my fill of all the Beta Bands, the Grizzly Bears, the Bon Ivers out there. Not mad that I had a chance to hear this one but I probably won't be revisiting it anytime soon.

Pleasant, easy listening. I would revisit for some backyard beer drinking. Small note, the echoey reverb thing on "This Song" was really jarring with headphones, I was not a fan.
Indie británico. Bastantes canciones un poco sosas...
This was quite pleasant to listen to. Kind of an indie vibe. I usually would give 2 stars to an album that was just okay, listenable, but doesn't have any major song. In this case, I was about to give it 2 stars but I actually liked the album overall by the end, so 3 stars it is.
I kinda like it. I fell asleep for about 20 minutes of the middle of the album but what I heard sounded good and I’d rather be asleep than listening to Korn. Will have to listen to this again when I am less tired.
I enjoyed a few songs musically, but as a whole the album fails to fascinate me. By the end, he seems to lose the identity in the album in the way he began in.
Pleasant surprise. I wasn't in the least aware of this album. The Badly Drawn Boy name was something I had only encountered a few times, but don't remember having ever listened to it. However, I found it truly enjoyable. Will get back to it.
Not quite as good as I remembered , but a couple of bangers
Acoustic, easy listening, soft rock type stuff. Some of it is really enjoyable, other stuff is weird and kinda cool. Not sure I’ll listen to it again but it’s a solid album.
All songs sound the same
Strange and eclectic to the point of scattered, but interesting enough to listen again. Feels like an album you can't digest all at once.
Quite peculiar, very interesting, pretty chill.
Better than I would’ve thought. Had a Pink Floyd Meddle feel
Nice to listen to.
Enjoyable album. Group new to me
This is the first record for an artist that I had not listened to before. I am pretty sure I saw his name before but had never listened. His style of indie pop mixed with an overwhelming sadness reminds me a lot of Elliot Smith. Apparently he played a tribute gig for him at some point. Overall I thought this record was good with a lot of interesting sounds that I wasn’t expecting. It is a bit long-winded however. Favorite track: Another Pearl Least favorite track: Say It Again
Very familiar with this. Like it!
Super chill album to listen to
I liked this. It grew on me with several plays. Nice.
Glad I know about him but this album didn't really resonate with me
Rather unusual thing, but not at all bad.
Arrangements were great but vocal style was something I didn’t care for.
It's not really what I go for but it not bad to put on in the background if I'm working or cleaning the house. Very low key but well done. It does bring across the feel of early 2000's music to me.
Pleasant surprise. Full album not as depressing as first song.
Although only just over 1h, the album dragged on forever with songs that are just nothing special
Pretty good.
Nice background music
Sopii varsin hyvin työpäivän taustamusaksi. Pitää kuunnella laajemmin tuotantoa kun on aikaa.
its pretty good. terrible album cover though. A little dated too.
He's like an Elliott Smith who can sing, which is nice, but there's not a lot here that grabs the attention in a positive way. Just okay. Best track: The Shining
Singer songwriter mixed with a little 90s grunge. I own "One Plus One is One" but never looked past that. This is great (closer to a 3.5) but there's some fat that could've been trimmed. Favorite tracks: "Fall in a River", "Another Pearl", "Disillusion"
1999: Everybody's Stalking, Once Around The Block
Liked first 5 songs then the transition was just completely off, not cohesive, at the 9th song it got better. 10-13 were not good. The rest of the album was nice.
This was alright, I don't really have a strong opinion about this album.
One or two good tunes but this was a short lived experience. Maybe keep the running time down to 44 min in future.
Around the early 2000s there seemed to be a whole bunch of this type of music whether it was BDB, James Morrison, Turin Breaks, Doves, Guillemots, Super Furry Animals... They made Radio 2 friendly inoffensive music that sounds good on Land Rover adverts, they don't need to be on this list.
First of all shockingly long. There's some good points but it's just soooo long that eventually the mid stuff becomes grating and really drags it down. There should be French Horn through the whole thing. The Nick Drake/Harry Nilsson comp is so unearned IMO
Favorite track(s): Camping Next to Water, Once Around the Block
Quite boring
not feeling this at all. maybe it's just today.
forgettable
I feel like this should've been neater, but it felt like it was fucking five hours long
Just gonna copy paste another review I saw “Was heading for a generous 3* but then went on for too long...”
The time dilation effect of this album should be studied in college physics courses. This is another argument for letting these albums sit a decade before putting them on a list like this because I can totally see how this would've sounded like the sound of the future at the time, but it's crushingly dated now.
Groupe inconnu. =>2/5
So I remember there was a lot of hype around this, a lot of people loved it, my brother insisted I listened to it and maybe even gave me a copy. I didn't remember anything about the music, but I remember being puzzled, baffled as to what people appreciated about it. Listening today makes me remember why: it's an overproduced mess. It starts out nice, horns, viola but just keeps adding layers and instrumentation. If there's an instrument, it's included in the mix. Going through the list: Harmonica? of course. Harmonium? oh that thing, yes. Harp? check? Harpsichord? Got it! If there's a vocal treatment, it's applied somewhere. Samples of all kinds. But there's no dynamics, everything is muffled and compressed. Also, too long. I'll give it two stars because I think the songs, if rerecorded by another band in a studio with only 16 tracks, are often really good. But overall, forgettable album that is totally ok not to ever hear. 2/5
This album is between okay lo-fi and boring. It’s also a little too long with over an hour.
Reminds me of the stuff I got into in college. More moody, sensitive music. Very much of its time. Also noticed that every artist that won the Mercury Prize in the early 2000s was added on this list? Was there no other "known" artists at the time apart from those that won this prize or something?
niks voor mij... saai
I didn't have high hopes from the cello intro. Sounds like a poor copy of Heatmiser/ Elliott Smith with baroque interludes.
Men ikkje ille
This wasn’t terrible but I couldn’t determine any single reason why one would listen to this when you could instead listen to, like, Elliott Smith or any other 90s indie folk/rock that sounds almost exactly like this.
It was fine, just no barriers were pushed, I wonder if those involved wanted to be there.
First song instrumental interesting a bit. Album becomes bland noise though
GENRES: Indie Rock, Indie Folk, Chamber Pop FAVs: The Shining, Bewilderbeast, Cause a Rockslide, Disillusion FIRST LISTEN RATING: 5.5/10
3/10 Unfortunately I found myself really wanting this one to end so I could move on after about halfway through. There's some good in here - I was particularly fond of 'The Shining' and 'Magic In The Air' - but for the most part it was extremely boring and struggled to keep my attention. 'This Song' might be the worst thing I've ever heard, and I will be returning to it if I ever have a strong desire to give myself a splitting headache. Best track: The Shining Will I revisit?: No
I see why the maker of the list put this album on the list, but not why I should listen to it before I die. 2.4.

I think you will find, my dear Watson, that the solution to this mystery lies in the first syllable of the band’s name.
Not my thing
I see the vision but I feel like the execution was a little lacking
An okay album, a couple of songs sounded good but none that stood out and made me want to listen again
what was up with the one with like sireny sounds I was driving damn
This is one of the 1001 best albums??? Musically I interesting at times, but no plans to revisit. 2.0
Listening to “This Song” in headphones gave me an immediate headache due to the fast hard stereo panning. It really made it hard for me to look at the rest of the album on its merits. It was…fine? A bit boring. 5/10 Decent
It’s not bad. But it’s kind of messy despite a few standout tracks. This is one of those albums where it’s probably good to have a producer or someone to to help with direction.
Not sure where the "critical acclaim" derives from here. A pleasant listen but not a "before you die" kinda album.
Not feeling this. Boring and redundant.
Oh, I remember this one. Although, oddly, I don't actually remember any of the music except for "Once Around the Block". But this was *big* when it came out. Not entirely sure why. It's fine enough, but, with distance from the UK and the early 2000s, I can't say it's life changing.
Painfully mediocre and generic.
There's a couple good songs on here, but if I'm being honest, this album is kinda meh. I've heard other bands/artists do similar music to much greater effect.
This is #day607 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… out of all the indie rock/folk out there, this? Off the top of my head, Into the Wild by Eddie Vedder, or pretty much anything by Mark Kozelek, blows this out of the water. This was an alright listen in places, despite the total runtime, but as an album I had to hear before I die? At least I learned this guy appeared on Unkle's Psyence Fiction, which, un/ironically, isn't even on this list. Let it be a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day608.
I'm sure a thoughtful and talented man, but this irritated the hell out of me. It may have been the Hugh Grant/About a Boy connection, unclear. Won't be back.
Tough listen!
I should like this a lot but I feel like it's not sticking with me
Zero familiarity with this artist. He's certainly talented for a badly drawn boy, given that he handled a majority of the instruments throughout this album. I was expecting this to be much more...artsy I guess? Not sure why, but I ended up sort of tolerating this after all. Being largely inoffensive is likely the biggest reason for my feelings, however. This all operates on one wavelength and never really veers strongly towards one direction or the other. As a result, this didn't really strike me as memorable at the end of the day. The comparisons to both Nick Drake and Elliott Smith kind of puzzle me honestly, as both artists were much more interesting and versatile in their respective crafts.
The longer I listened, the lower my rating went.
It's got aspects of music that I like. But those pieces just don't together very well. it's just boring. There's nothing that grabbed me. I'm wavering between a 2 or 3. The first half was ok. If it were on in someone else's place, I wouldn't notice it good or bad. The latter half though plodded along. And what the hell was with that last track. Everything was out of tune; vocals, guitar, that whistle. Oof.
It was ok, with no stand out track
Nothing inherently bad here. Maybe on a different day I would have enjoyed this more, but I found this mostly forgettable.
It’s fine
I don't hate this, I don't love it, either. It's just there. It's dull at times, sometimes interesting but those moments are fleeting. Songwriting is alright. Music interesting but not good enough to keep me entertained. 2
Started off not bad but was just a bit dull. Felt like it went on for far longer than an hour
I thought this album was decent. I like the style of contemporary composition, maybe because it's similar to mine, because it's not limited by any particular style. So I appreciated the versatility. In the case of this album in particular, however, it felt a little unfocused and longer than it needed to be, in that versatility manifested in a way that I liked aspects of many songs, but wasn't blown away by any particular song. I think "Once Around the Block was my favorite." strong, five to a light six
5,5/10 Highlights: Everybody's Stalking Once Around the Block
It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good
Sadly, one of those albums that doesn't leave much of an impression. Note to self: Melodic plodding.
Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood? Nothing here was bad, but I kept checking to see how much more there was so I could listen to something else.
not too shabby
not for me
He can write a tune but it's too one paced and one dimensional over a whole album.
Patchwork, home-recorded textures built from softly strummed guitars, mellow piano lines, light beats, and gently frayed vocals move this indie-folk album like an old turntable with a worn needle—charming in its crackle and intimacy at first, but at times as repetitious as a broken record, circling the same emotional groove without moving forward.
Occationally got dangerously close to having an atmosphere. The title should be "Badly drawn out boy"
A fitting addition to the list of 1001 Entirely Forgettable British Indie Albums.
Album 105. The Hour of Bewilderbeast (https://open.spotify.com/album/7qdi1B4jqHEA5NvV34haRP?si=wf8uFykXQCqR3L9SVoe3kA) — Badly Drawn Boy (2000) It was okay to fill time during the commute, but there's nothing, nothing interesting and nothing I can recall. I don't know why it is on the list, but I'm glad the album was removed in the latest editions of the book. 2/5 No liked songs
Whatever. Not the genre I thought it'd be.
Yeah kinda whatever not bad but not sure why it's on the list
eh, not my thing. beautiful ending track though
2.5
Badly made music
Weinig bijzonders weer vandaag. Enorm melancholisch.
Camping Next to Water trok me er weer volledig uit en Stone on the Water bracht me terug.
Dull
I thought we had a solid 3 star album but boy did this one overstay its welcome
Not my sort of music. Bit depressing for me. Pissing in the wind is decent.
I had this on CD and l listened to it alot at the time. Listening again now and I dont think its aged well (or maybe I haven't aged well) as its sounds pretty charmless and annoying.
1.78
It bored me pretty bad, I didn’t even finish it
A fine album but it didn't grab me in any way.
Revolutionary in '99 derivative in the big '26. Indie alt folk for the pleasure of zoning out and questioning if you heard this song before or not. Beautiful swells and melodies at times. Awfully daft and mundane at other times. No relistenability for me. 2 stars. The 2010's were indie alt folk peak. Proto examples like this are missing something.
eh
Nothing special about this album.
